  1. Thanks very much, Ben. Good morning, everyone. It's lovely to see so many here in the church

  2. and to know there are lots more watching on the live stream or listening to the recording.

  3. You will find it helpful if you're trying to follow me. If you have a Bible in front of you,

  4. open to 2 Corinthians 10, or if you can get it on your phone. If you were here last Sunday,

  5. you may remember that during the service, I gave an update on our church's finances

  6. and encourage everyone to think about their giving to the Lord's work here.

  7. Thank you. A number of people have responded positively to that. Really grateful.

  8. If you still want to give, there is information in the foyer.

  9. But I want you to imagine just now, if last week, having asked for your money,

  10. I stood up this morning and said, you think you're good Christians, but actually you're really unspiritual.

  11. You're self-satisfied, you're proud of yourselves, and you're a bunch of troublemakers.

  12. And unless you change pretty quickly, I'm going to get tough with you.

  13. Now, imagine if I said that, you might say, well, if he's looking for our money, he can forget it now.

  14. There's no need to insult us. Now, let's be clear, I'm not going to do that.

  15. But it is very much what Paul does in 2 Corinthians.

  16. Last week, we were looking at chapter 9, before that chapter 8 with Graham,

  17. and Paul is encouraging the Corinthians to give to help the churches in Judea during a time of famine.

  18. And then in chapter 10, there's a really dramatic change of tone.

  19. And Paul starts by saying, well, you think I'm timid when I'm with you and both when I'm in writing.

  20. Just wait till I come. If you haven't sorted yourselves out, you'll see how tough I can be.

  21. There really is a strong change in the letter.

  22. And we might ask, well, why is that?

  23. Why does Paul go from being very ingratiating, if that's right words, to the Corinthians,

  24. to suddenly slamming them and saying he's going to come and to condemn those who oppose him?

  25. One quite attractive theory of that is perhaps Paul wrote 2 Corinthians,

  26. having a good report from Titus about what is happening in the church at Corinth.

  27. And perhaps when he was writing the first part of the letter,

  28. he received more word from Corinth that said, actually, Titus was maybe a bit premature.

  29. There are still huge problems in the church.

  30. And at that point, he thought, well, I'm going to need to change a bit and be a bit tougher with them.

  31. It's possible that's what was the case, but I don't think we need to assume it was something like that.

  32. If we look a little bit differently at 2 Corinthians, I think there is a natural flow to it.

  33. So the first seven chapters are largely looking backwards.

  34. There have been big problems in the church.

  35. We'll come back to them.

  36. Paul had written to the church and told them they needed to sort themselves out.

  37. Titus was able to come back and say, yes, they have largely repented of what they've done.

  38. And Paul was really encouraged.

  39. And the first seven chapters, on the whole, are quite upbeat.

  40. And Paul talks about everything that we have in Lord Jesus.

  41. He talks about the future, a glory for the Christians that awaits us.

  42. And it's a rejoicing by Paul that the Corinthians have repented, or most of them at least have.

  43. That was looking backwards.

  44. Chapter 8 and 9 were more looking at the present.

  45. So I was saying to the Corinthians, if you really have changed, and I believe you have,

  46. why don't you demonstrate that through your generosity to Christians elsewhere who are going through a time of great difficulty?

  47. Now is your chance to do that.

  48. And Paul expresses confidence that indeed they will.

  49. And then in chapters 10 through 13, he is looking forward.

  50. He's thinking, I'm going to be visiting Corinth again.

  51. And when I do, I want to make sure the church is in good shape.

  52. I don't want to be going there and having to judge them and to put things right.

  53. And chapters 10 to 13 are Paul preparing the way in advance and saying to the Christians in Corinth,

  54. if you can sort things out, it will be a good visit that I'll come with.

  55. If you're still following those who oppose me and are not preaching the right message,

  56. well, then I'm going to have to come and be tough and sort things out.

  57. So although the juxtaposition of chapters 9 and 10 might slightly jar us in 21st century Scotland,

  58. there is a logic to them.

  59. And I think in first century Greece, they wouldn't have come across in quite the same way.

  60. But we definitely are now in a different part of the letter.

  61. And for the next four chapters, Paul is going to be defending himself.

  62. He's going to be defending himself against those who say he's not really a true apostle,

  63. that the people shouldn't follow him.

  64. And he's going to be saying to the church, they have to get rid of these people.

  65. And he uses lots of different ways of doing that.

  66. There's quite a lot of irony in the chapters.

  67. You may notice he go through a little bit of sarcasm.

  68. And Paul uses the word boast a lot.

  69. You'll see this in today's passage.

  70. And we get again and again as we go through.

  71. Said with some embarrassment, Paul doesn't want to boast,

  72. but feels that he needs to just to highlight how much better he is

  73. than these people who are opposing him.

  74. Let's just take a minute before we dig into the passage to remind ourselves of who it is that Paul's talking about.

  75. They're probably Jews encouraging the Corinthians to follow more of the Jewish religion

  76. rather than just rely on faith in Jesus alone for their salvation.

  77. They were people who came with oratory, who had a bit of presence to them,

  78. and who came to the church expecting to be supported financially by it and to be looked up to in it.

  79. They would talk of mystical experiences they had of the Lord.

  80. They would try to show works of power, miracles,

  81. and they would present themselves as what Paul will call in a couple of chapters later, super apostles.

  82. We are the real deal.

  83. We are the people who are really spiritual.

  84. You need to follow us.

  85. And they looked at Paul and said,

  86. he's a little man.

  87. He's not very imposing.

  88. He's not the greatest of speakers.

  89. He even is a manual laborer.

  90. He makes tents for a living.

  91. Why should people listen to him?

  92. We are much more positive in our preaching,

  93. and we are the ones that you should follow.

  94. Follow.

  95. But crucially for Paul,

  96. they weren't bringing the right gospel to the church.

  97. They weren't building the church up.

  98. They were just there for their own good,

  99. so that people would think a lot of them,

  100. and would give them lots of money.

  101. They didn't have any real interest in the Christians in Corinth.

  102. And so Paul in these chapters will defend himself against a number of accusations.

  103. I'll just give an idea of where we're going this morning.

  104. There are a couple of particular criticisms that Paul deals with.

  105. The chapter divides itself quite neatly into two sections,

  106. from verse 1 to 11,

  107. and then from verse 12 to verse 18.

  108. And in the first section,

  109. the people who oppose Paul are saying,

  110. he's bold when he writes.

  111. He's willing to have a go at us in writing.

  112. When he's actually with us,

  113. he's very timid.

  114. He doesn't follow up what he says he will when he's writing.

  115. He is really not a person who has great confidence in himself,

  116. or who's someone that you should listen to.

  117. Paul responds to that in these verses.

  118. And then verses 12 through to 18,

  119. the people are saying,

  120. well, he's not got any commendation with them.

  121. We come with our letters,

  122. saying how great we are,

  123. and all the wonderful things we've done.

  124. Where does Paul have that?

  125. And so Paul has to deal with that

  126. in the second part of the chapter.

  127. Now, below that, there are a number of sub-themes.

  128. Now, the questions here aren't quite too clear-cut,

  129. but let me just suggest the kind of things

  130. that the people might have been saying.

  131. So they were saying,

  132. Paul's worldly.

  133. He's not spiritual.

  134. We are super-Christians.

  135. We are super-apostles.

  136. Paul's not like that.

  137. He just doesn't have the spiritual power that we do.

  138. They also question Paul's authority.

  139. They're saying,

  140. Paul's constantly criticising you.

  141. He's putting you down.

  142. What kind of authority does he have to do that?

  143. And then they're saying,

  144. he's encroaching on our patch.

  145. We are the people in Corinth now.

  146. What right has Paul got to come

  147. and to tell you what to do?

  148. And it's that kind of criticism

  149. that we'll be thinking about.

  150. Paul, though, turns it around

  151. and he presents things much more positively.

  152. And I want to focus more this morning

  153. rather than the criticism

  154. on the priorities that Paul presents to us.

  155. So when they talk about him being hard

  156. or being soft,

  157. Paul says,

  158. I want to appeal to you

  159. with the gentleness of Christ.

  160. When they say that they're spiritual

  161. and he's worldly,

  162. Paul says,

  163. what I really want

  164. is to have the mind of Christ.

  165. When they say he's only interested

  166. in criticising,

  167. that he's not really helping the church,

  168. Paul says,

  169. my concern is the body of Christ

  170. in building up,

  171. not in bringing down.

  172. When they say he's got no commendation,

  173. he didn't come with all these letters,

  174. Paul says,

  175. what really matters to me

  176. is the commendation of Christ,

  177. that the Lord Jesus is happy

  178. with what I do.

  179. And when the question is right

  180. to encroach on where they are,

  181. Paul says,

  182. I was sent to you

  183. with the gospel of Christ

  184. and that is what I'm going to bring to you.

  185. So that's where we're going.

  186. We'll briefly talk about each of these

  187. and then at the end,

  188. we'll pull it together.

  189. So let's begin

  190. with the Corinthians saying about Paul

  191. that he's timid when he's with them,

  192. but he's bold when he writes to them

  193. and Paul countering that.

  194. So this little picture

  195. I put up on the screen

  196. is a brief summary

  197. of Paul's dealings with the Corinthians.

  198. So his first visit

  199. we read about in the book of Acts.

  200. He went to Corinth

  201. after he'd been to Athens

  202. and he had a fairly difficult time there,

  203. but he established a church.

  204. He established a church

  205. that really flourished.

  206. It was supremely gifted.

  207. They had lots of spiritual gifts

  208. and they were able to grow

  209. and to develop.

  210. But they also developed lots of issues.

  211. That was 1 Corinthians.

  212. Paul's first letter is in our Bible

  213. is about lots of issues

  214. that Corinthians had

  215. because they just thought

  216. a little too much of themselves

  217. and they didn't deal

  218. with some of the sin and issues

  219. that they had in the church.

  220. So 1 Corinthians is in our Bible.

  221. Paul then found that things were going

  222. or heard that things were getting worse

  223. in Corinth

  224. and he went back again.

  225. What's sometimes called

  226. his painful visit.

  227. He went and essentially

  228. he was rejected by the church.

  229. These people who'd come in

  230. and were trying to present themselves

  231. as superior to Paul

  232. had wormed their way in

  233. and they had taken a lot of control

  234. within the church.

  235. And Paul then had a very difficult

  236. decision to make.

  237. He could have been

  238. very confrontational.

  239. He could have said

  240. no they're all wrong

  241. and I'm the true apostle

  242. and you've got to listen to me

  243. and got into a bit of a slanging match.

  244. But he decided not to do that.

  245. Out of love and consideration

  246. for the church

  247. he didn't want to split it completely.

  248. He decided at that point

  249. not to bring judgment on them

  250. but to leave fairly quietly.

  251. But what he did after that

  252. was he wrote them

  253. what's known as

  254. his severe letter.

  255. Now that's not in our Bible

  256. but it's referred to

  257. in 2 Corinthians.

  258. What he didn't feel able

  259. to say to them

  260. face to face

  261. he put in a letter

  262. and sent to them

  263. via Titus.

  264. And that's why the Corinthians

  265. are saying

  266. or those who've come to Corinth

  267. are saying

  268. he's bold when he writes

  269. and he's timid

  270. when he's with us.

  271. It was Paul

  272. out of consideration

  273. for the church

  274. not wanting to split it

  275. by getting to a slanging match

  276. with them

  277. but to write them

  278. his considered views

  279. and warnings

  280. of what might happen

  281. if they didn't change.

  282. So that last letter

  283. as I said

  284. was sent with Titus.

  285. The church responded

  286. well to it

  287. didn't become perfect

  288. by any means

  289. responded well

  290. and Titus came back

  291. with the good report

  292. and that's when Paul

  293. wrote 2 Corinthians.

  294. And as I said

  295. he looks forward

  296. in that to his third visit

  297. and hopes that

  298. that will be

  299. more positive.

  300. So if we go back

  301. to our thing

  302. about Paul's priorities

  303. what do we learn

  304. then in these

  305. opening verses

  306. about Paul's

  307. approach?

  308. Paul almost says

  309. in these verses

  310. I'm going to do

  311. the opposite

  312. of what you said

  313. I'd do.

  314. You said

  315. I would be bold

  316. in writing

  317. and I would be timid

  318. when I come to you

  319. actually in my writing

  320. I'm going to be gentle

  321. I'm going to plead

  322. with you

  323. I'm not going

  324. to force you

  325. but if you don't change

  326. when I come to you

  327. things will be

  328. very different.

  329. Paul wanted

  330. them to change

  331. he was desperate

  332. for them to change

  333. without him having

  334. to come

  335. and to force it

  336. on them.

  337. And he says

  338. in verse 1

  339. by the humility

  340. and gentleness

  341. of Christ

  342. I appeal

  343. to you.

  344. Very measured

  345. very calm

  346. but also

  347. very compelling.

  348. And he says

  349. in doing this

  350. I'm following

  351. the example

  352. of Jesus.

  353. Now of course

  354. we know

  355. if we read

  356. the gospels

  357. that Jesus says

  358. Matthew chapter 11

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  359. take my yoke

  360. upon you

  361. and learn from me

  362. for I am gentle

  363. and humble

  364. in heart

  365. and you will

  366. find rest

  367. for your souls.

  368. And in some ways

  369. that is exactly

  370. what Paul is trying

  371. to do here

  372. being humble

  373. and gentle

  374. but enabling

  375. the Corinthians

  376. to learn

  377. from him.

  378. But I think

  379. it's maybe a bit

  380. more in what

  381. Paul says

  382. than that.

  383. If we think

  384. back to the life

  385. of Jesus

  386. now Jesus

  387. could be very firm

  388. when he chose

  389. to be.

  390. When it was

  391. the money changes

  392. in the temple

  393. or when it was

  394. exposing the hypocrisy

  395. of the Pharisees

  396. Jesus didn't

  397. hold back.

  398. But when he came

  399. to earth

  400. the first time

  401. he didn't come

  402. in judgment.

  403. John 3 17 says

  404. God did not send

  405. his son

  406. to condemn

  407. the world

  408. but to save

  409. the world

  410. through him.

  411. He gave plenty

  412. of opportunities

  413. for people

  414. to repent

  415. and change

  416. their ways.

  417. But when ultimately

  418. he was rejected

  419. by his own people

  420. when he was nailed

  421. to the cross

  422. he didn't bring

  423. down condemnation

  424. and judgment

  425. on them

  426. he says

  427. Father forgive them

  428. for they don't

  429. know what they do.

  430. His first coming

  431. was not to judge.

  432. And similarly

  433. Paul's saying

  434. when I came first

  435. and found all

  436. these problems

  437. I didn't come

  438. in judgment

  439. I came to give

  440. you a chance

  441. to change.

  442. Over the last

  443. 2,000 years

  444. we've lived

  445. in a period

  446. of God's grace.

  447. And we have

  448. God's word

  449. that tells us

  450. about how

  451. our God

  452. is

  453. about his

  454. holiness

  455. and also

  456. about his

  457. love

  458. and that

  459. urges us

  460. to repent

  461. and to turn

  462. away

  463. from our sins.

  464. And many

  465. millions

  466. over the years

  467. have done

  468. that

  469. and come

  470. to faith

  471. in Jesus.

  472. But there

  473. are warnings

  474. in the Bible

  475. about what

  476. happens

  477. if we don't

  478. do it

  479. just like

  480. Paul does

  481. in his

  482. letter

  483. here.

  484. And when

  485. Jesus comes

  486. again for

  487. the second

  488. time

  489. we don't

  490. know when

  491. that will be

  492. could be

  493. very soon

  494. when Jesus

  495. comes again

  496. for the

  497. second time

  498. he won't

  499. be coming

  500. to save

  501. the world

  502. to take

  503. the sins

  504. of the world

  505. as he did

  506. when he died

  507. on the cross.

  508. Rather he'll

  509. be coming

  510. so that people

  511. can be divided

  512. into two

  513. groups.

  514. Those who

  515. have trusted

  516. Jesus

  517. who have

  518. obeyed

  519. what he

  520. said

  521. who have

  522. their faith

  523. in him

  524. and not

  525. in themselves

  526. and those

  527. who have

  528. rejected

  529. Jesus.

  530. And those

  531. who have

  532. rejected him

  533. will be

  534. judged

  535. and will

  536. be

  537. eternally

  538. condemned.

  539. That's a

  540. really solemn

  541. thought.

  542. It's one

  543. perhaps we

  544. don't talk

  545. about often

  546. enough in

  547. church.

  548. There's a

  549. judgment

  550. coming and

  551. we all

  552. need to

  553. make sure

  554. that our

  555. trust is

  556. in Jesus

  557. so that we

  558. can escape

  559. that judgment

  560. and have

  561. eternal life

  562. through him.

  563. Maybe I

  564. could echo

  565. Paul's

  566. words.

  567. By the

  568. humility

  569. and gentleness

  570. of Christ

  571. I appeal

  572. to you to

  573. make sure

  574. that you

  575. are right

  576. with God

  577. through faith

  578. in Jesus

  579. so that

  580. when he

  581. returns

  582. you will

  583. be saved

  584. and not

  585. condemned.

  586. Something there

  587. for everyone

  588. to think

  589. about.

  590. And if we

  591. are Christians

  592. if we are

  593. following Jesus

  594. to reflect

  595. on that

  596. and to

  597. think how

  598. we can

  599. help others

  600. to understand

  601. their need

  602. of the

  603. Lord Jesus.

  604. That is

  605. the gentleness

  606. of Christ

  607. that Paul

  608. displays.

  609. The second

  610. thing we want

  611. to think about

  612. is the

  613. mind of

  614. Christ.

  615. We're

  616. looking at

  617. verses 3

  618. to 6

  619. here.

  620. And the

  621. accusation

  622. that's been

  623. made against

  624. Paul is

  625. at the

  626. end of

  627. verse 2

  628. where he

  629. talks about

  630. people who

  631. think that

  632. we live

  633. by the

  634. standards

  635. of this

  636. world.

  637. I think

  638. what they're

  639. saying here

  640. is that

  641. they are

  642. strong

  643. Christians

  644. full of

  645. the Holy

  646. Spirit

  647. and they

  648. are able

  649. to say

  650. exactly

  651. what they

  652. think

  653. and to

  654. teach the

  655. people

  656. in exactly

  657. the way

  658. they want.

  659. Paul

  660. lives by

  661. a different

  662. standard.

  663. He's not

  664. got the

  665. spiritual courage

  666. and the

  667. spiritual ability

  668. to deal

  669. with problems

  670. face to face.

  671. He has to

  672. try and do it

  673. in writing.

  674. That's a very

  675. worldly way

  676. of looking at

  677. things,

  678. they say.

  679. Paul says

  680. not at all.

  681. What is

  682. key here

  683. is that we're

  684. in a battle.

  685. The language

  686. of verses

  687. 3-5

  688. is very

  689. much the

  690. language

  691. of

  692. warfare.

  693. Paul says

  694. I'm fighting

  695. a battle,

  696. I'm going

  697. to win

  698. that battle

  699. and in

  700. particular

  701. he says

  702. the battle

  703. is for

  704. the mind,

  705. to have

  706. the mind

  707. of

  708. Christ.

  709. Verse 5

  710. he says

  711. we take

  712. captive

  713. every thought

  714. to make

  715. it

  716. obedient

  717. to

  718. Christ.

  719. That's a

  720. great theme

  721. as we go

  722. through the

  723. New Testament.

  724. that the

  725. battle in

  726. our lives

  727. is very

  728. largely a

  729. battle for

  730. our minds.

  731. Paul writes

  732. in Romans

  733. 12,

  734. do not

  735. conform to

  736. the pattern

  737. of this

  738. world

  739. but be

  740. transformed

  741. by the

  742. renewing

  743. of your

  744. mind

  745. then you

  746. will be

  747. able to

  748. test and

  749. approve

  750. what God's

  751. good will

  752. is.

  753. His good

  754. pleasing

  755. and perfect

  756. will.

  757. Above

  758. anything else

  759. in our

  760. lives,

  761. if we are

  762. Christians,

  763. if we know

  764. Jesus as

  765. saviour,

  766. we need

  767. to seek

  768. to have

  769. the mind

  770. of Christ

  771. to be

  772. filled with

  773. thoughts of

  774. him and

  775. of his

  776. standards

  777. and to

  778. live by

  779. these and

  780. not the

  781. world's

  782. standards.

  783. That's just

  784. what I've

  785. been doing.

  786. You may

  787. accuse me

  788. of being

  789. worldly.

  790. I've been

  791. trying with

  792. love and

  793. with gentleness

  794. to help you

  795. to get in

  796. the right

  797. path.

  798. But I

  799. have the

  800. mind of

  801. Christ and

  802. if you

  803. don't,

  804. then there

  805. will be

  806. consequences.

  807. Paul says

  808. in Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  809. chapter 3,

  810. set your

  811. mind on

  812. things above,

  813. not on

  814. earthly

  815. things.

  816. Can I

  817. challenge us

  818. this morning?

  819. What do

  820. we do to

  821. make sure

  822. that we

  823. have the

  824. mind of

  825. Christ?

  826. I suggest

  827. the key

  828. things in

  829. that are

  830. reading our

  831. Bibles and

  832. meditating on

  833. God's Word

  834. and spending

  835. time in

  836. prayer,

  837. looking for

  838. God's will

  839. and his

  840. guidance in

  841. our lives.

  842. If we're

  843. Christians,

  844. if we're

  845. followers of

  846. Jesus,

  847. very important

  848. that we

  849. have the

  850. mind of

  851. Christ,

  852. that we

  853. look at

  854. the world

  855. from his

  856. perspective,

  857. not from

  858. the way

  859. the world

  860. looks at

  861. it,

  862. and we

  863. seek to

  864. be

  865. obedient

  866. to it.

  867. Third

  868. point,

  869. then,

  870. is on

  871. the body

  872. of Christ.

  873. So the

  874. troublemakers

  875. in Corinth

  876. seem to be

  877. saying,

  878. Paul is

  879. just someone

  880. who criticizes

  881. constantly,

  882. but he's

  883. not got

  884. the authority

  885. to do

  886. it,

  887. and you

  888. should just

  889. ignore him.

  890. In fact,

  891. they seem to

  892. be saying,

  893. he may not

  894. even be a

  895. Christian.

  896. If he's

  897. not got

  898. the spirit

  899. of Jesus

  900. in him

  901. the way

  902. that we

  903. do,

  904. is he

  905. really a

  906. Christian

  907. at all?

  908. Apocryphals

  909. that one

  910. straight away,

  911. that he's

  912. saying they're

  913. judging by

  914. appearance,

  915. or maybe

  916. it could

  917. be better

  918. translated,

  919. you're

  920. missing the

  921. obvious.

  922. If anyone's

  923. confident that

  924. they belong

  925. to Christ,

  926. they should

  927. consider,

  928. again,

  929. that we

  930. belong to

  931. Christ just

  932. as much

  933. as they

  934. do.

  935. The evidence

  936. of belonging

  937. to Christ

  938. is not

  939. having great

  940. confidence in

  941. your speaking,

  942. is not being

  943. able to do

  944. things that

  945. other people

  946. can't do,

  947. not even

  948. being able to

  949. do miracles

  950. or whatever.

  951. All of us

  952. who have our

  953. trust in

  954. Jesus,

  955. we have

  956. Christ,

  957. we are part

  958. of the body

  959. of Christ,

  960. the church.

  961. And Paul

  962. says,

  963. my aim

  964. is to build

  965. up this

  966. church.

  967. Paul

  968. had established

  969. the church

  970. in Corinth,

  971. he loved

  972. it,

  973. he loved

  974. the people

  975. in it,

  976. and his

  977. greatest desire

  978. was that

  979. they should

  980. obey the

  981. Lord and

  982. that they

  983. should follow

  984. him closely

  985. as they

  986. grew in

  987. faith.

  988. Bodybuilding

  989. can be

  990. painful,

  991. and I'm

  992. not a

  993. bodybuilder,

  994. but I know

  995. people who do

  996. it can be

  997. quite a painful

  998. and difficult

  999. process,

  1000. but at the

  1001. end of the

  1002. day,

  1003. they end up

  1004. stronger,

  1005. they end up

  1006. physically

  1007. in better

  1008. shape.

  1009. I think Paul

  1010. is saying

  1011. here,

  1012. actually,

  1013. building the

  1014. body of

  1015. Christ at

  1016. times can

  1017. be painful

  1018. too.

  1019. It's not

  1020. all about

  1021. just encouraging

  1022. each other

  1023. and saying

  1024. how wonderful

  1025. we are

  1026. and pointing

  1027. to Jesus,

  1028. vital though

  1029. that is.

  1030. Sometimes in

  1031. love we have

  1032. to correct

  1033. one another

  1034. if we're

  1035. going wrong,

  1036. or we have

  1037. to be willing

  1038. to accept

  1039. correction

  1040. if other

  1041. people have

  1042. seen things

  1043. in us

  1044. and point

  1045. it out.

  1046. But the

  1047. key thing

  1048. is that

  1049. together we

  1050. build up

  1051. the body

  1052. of Christ,

  1053. that together

  1054. we seek to

  1055. help one

  1056. another to

  1057. grow in

  1058. our faith

  1059. and in

  1060. our love

  1061. of the

  1062. Lord Jesus

  1063. and our

  1064. devotion to

  1065. him.

  1066. You and

  1067. I are not

  1068. apostles,

  1069. far less

  1070. super apostles,

  1071. but all of

  1072. us have

  1073. spiritual gifts

  1074. that God

  1075. has given

  1076. us,

  1077. and all of

  1078. us have a

  1079. duty,

  1080. a responsibility

  1081. if we are

  1082. Christians and

  1083. we are part

  1084. of the church

  1085. to build

  1086. one another

  1087. up and

  1088. to help

  1089. us to

  1090. grow in

  1091. our faith.

  1092. And sometimes

  1093. that can

  1094. mean saying

  1095. things people

  1096. don't necessarily

  1097. want to

  1098. hear,

  1099. but that God

  1100. would direct

  1101. us to help

  1102. them to

  1103. understand what

  1104. they need to

  1105. change in

  1106. their lives.

  1107. We all have

  1108. the opportunity

  1109. to serve

  1110. and to help

  1111. others on

  1112. our Christian

  1113. walk.

  1114. So that's

  1115. the first half

  1116. of the chapter

  1117. if you like,

  1118. the overall

  1119. heading,

  1120. the gentleness

  1121. of Christ,

  1122. but within

  1123. that the mind

  1124. of Christ

  1125. and the body

  1126. of Christ

  1127. are priorities

  1128. for Paul.

  1129. For the second

  1130. part of the

  1131. chapter I

  1132. want to take

  1133. the gospel

  1134. of Christ

  1135. first and

  1136. we'll come

  1137. back to

  1138. the commendation

  1139. of Christ

  1140. later.

  1141. Paul was

  1142. commissioned

  1143. by Jesus

  1144. to go

  1145. and to

  1146. take the

  1147. gospel

  1148. to the

  1149. Gentiles.

  1150. There was

  1151. later an

  1152. agreement

  1153. between the

  1154. leaders of

  1155. the early

  1156. church

  1157. that that

  1158. is what

  1159. they would

  1160. do.

  1161. Peter and

  1162. others

  1163. would

  1164. concentrate

  1165. on taking

  1166. the gospel

  1167. to the

  1168. Jews.

  1169. Paul would

  1170. concentrate

  1171. on taking

  1172. the gospel

  1173. to the

  1174. Gentiles.

  1175. And as

  1176. part of

  1177. that,

  1178. Paul had

  1179. come to

  1180. Corinth

  1181. with the

  1182. gospel

  1183. message.

  1184. The people

  1185. who were

  1186. critical of

  1187. him had

  1188. come in

  1189. later.

  1190. They'd

  1191. kind of

  1192. ridden on

  1193. his

  1194. coattails

  1195. and got

  1196. into the

  1197. church

  1198. and led

  1199. it astray.

  1200. But Paul

  1201. was the

  1202. one who

  1203. had

  1204. established,

  1205. in human

  1206. terms,

  1207. established

  1208. the

  1209. church.

  1210. So he

  1211. says,

  1212. quite

  1213. legitimately,

  1214. I can

  1215. come and

  1216. I can

  1217. try to

  1218. tell it

  1219. where it's

  1220. going wrong.

  1221. I have

  1222. that authority,

  1223. I've been

  1224. given that

  1225. authority by

  1226. God,

  1227. and I am

  1228. going to

  1229. ensure that

  1230. the church

  1231. get back

  1232. on the

  1233. right lines.

  1234. Paul wasn't

  1235. a fly-by-night

  1236. preacher,

  1237. come in

  1238. today,

  1239. preach the

  1240. word,

  1241. maybe get

  1242. paid something

  1243. and then go

  1244. on and do

  1245. something

  1246. somewhere else.

  1247. Although he

  1248. had a

  1249. wide

  1250. teaching

  1251. ministry,

  1252. although he

  1253. went all

  1254. over the

  1255. known world

  1256. at that

  1257. time,

  1258. when he

  1259. established

  1260. a church,

  1261. Paul really

  1262. wanted to

  1263. care for

  1264. it and

  1265. to nurture

  1266. it and

  1267. to give

  1268. it opportunities

  1269. to grow

  1270. and to

  1271. serve.

  1272. You may

  1273. have noticed

  1274. in the

  1275. chapter that

  1276. Paul talks

  1277. about going

  1278. to the

  1279. regions

  1280. beyond.

  1281. Now regions

  1282. beyond in

  1283. that case

  1284. would be

  1285. places like

  1286. Rome and

  1287. Spain and

  1288. other parts

  1289. of the

  1290. world which

  1291. hadn't

  1292. necessarily

  1293. been reached

  1294. with the

  1295. gospel.

  1296. And Paul

  1297. wants to

  1298. partner with

  1299. the

  1300. Corinthian

  1301. church in

  1302. going and

  1303. taking God's

  1304. word to

  1305. these places.

  1306. They said,

  1307. I won't do

  1308. that until

  1309. the problems

  1310. are resolved

  1311. in Corinth.

  1312. My first

  1313. priority is to

  1314. sort out the

  1315. issues in the

  1316. church that I

  1317. established.

  1318. Then with

  1319. your support,

  1320. I can go

  1321. and take the

  1322. word elsewhere.

  1323. I think this

  1324. illustrates for us

  1325. two very

  1326. important areas

  1327. of gospel

  1328. work.

  1329. On one

  1330. hand, all

  1331. Christians

  1332. should have a

  1333. restless desire

  1334. to tell others

  1335. the good news

  1336. of the gospel.

  1337. To reach for

  1338. Christ, those

  1339. who haven't yet

  1340. been saved

  1341. and are heading

  1342. for judgment

  1343. unless they

  1344. repent and

  1345. turn to Christ.

  1346. To die without

  1347. Christ is to be

  1348. lost forever

  1349. and we want to

  1350. give everyone

  1351. we can the

  1352. opportunity to

  1353. experience God's

  1354. salvation.

  1355. salvation.

  1356. But Paul

  1357. reminds us the

  1358. gospel is not

  1359. just about making

  1360. converts.

  1361. It's not enough,

  1362. it's essential,

  1363. but it's not enough

  1364. that people just

  1365. become Christians

  1366. and then drift on

  1367. with their old

  1368. life and nothing

  1369. changes.

  1370. Rather, the

  1371. gospel is about

  1372. making disciples,

  1373. about people

  1374. coming to faith

  1375. in the Lord

  1376. Jesus and then

  1377. growing in him

  1378. and becoming

  1379. more like Jesus

  1380. in their daily

  1381. lives.

  1382. And that's what

  1383. we're about as

  1384. a church.

  1385. We want people

  1386. to come and

  1387. to trust in

  1388. the Lord

  1389. Jesus.

  1390. But we also

  1391. want to see

  1392. spiritual growth,

  1393. people developing

  1394. and flourishing

  1395. in their faith

  1396. as they draw

  1397. closer to the

  1398. Lord Jesus

  1399. and as they

  1400. serve him.

  1401. I think there's

  1402. a slightly

  1403. sobering warning

  1404. here as well

  1405. that maybe we

  1406. need to think

  1407. about.

  1408. I'm not thinking

  1409. about anything

  1410. particular when

  1411. I say this,

  1412. but there is a

  1413. danger in churches

  1414. that if there are

  1415. problems, if there

  1416. are people causing

  1417. difficulties or

  1418. divisions or

  1419. troubles, that

  1420. takes up an

  1421. awful lot of

  1422. the time of

  1423. church leadership

  1424. and it restricts

  1425. the ability to

  1426. spread the gospel

  1427. and to grow the

  1428. work of Christ.

1429. We all need to be

1430. sure if we are a

  1431. member of a church

  1432. that we are people

  1433. who are there for

  1434. the building up of

  1435. others and not

  1436. for causing

  1437. trouble or to

  1438. reduce the time

  1439. that the leaders

  1440. of the church

  1441. have to reach

  1442. out and to plan

  1443. ahead with the

  1444. gospel.

  1445. The final one

  1446. and then we'll

  1447. put things

  1448. together.

  1449. The commendation

  1450. of Christ.

  1451. What was

  1452. happening here

  1453. was that these

  1454. people had come

  1455. to Corinth with

  1456. letters saying

  1457. how wonderful

  1458. they were.

  1459. Paul says

  1460. actually they

  1461. wrote the letters

  1462. themselves.

  1463. I don't think

  1464. each individual

  1465. probably wrote

  1466. their own

  1467. letter, but

  1468. probably a group

  1469. of people and

  1470. they wrote

  1471. glowing reports

  1472. of each other.

  1473. They had very

  1474. little value

  1475. because it was

  1476. only their

  1477. assessment and

  1478. they were only

  1479. comparing people

  1480. with a small

  1481. group.

  1482. Might have looked

  1483. convincing, might

  1484. have looked as

  1485. if these were

  1486. good people and

  1487. people you should

  1488. listen to.

  1489. In practice the

  1490. letters that they

  1491. brought were

  1492. worth almost

  1493. nothing.

  1494. Back in chapter

  1495. three where Paul

  1496. faced a similar

  1497. challenge about

  1498. his letter of

  1499. commendation, he

  1500. said that actually

  1501. his letter was

  1502. written on the

  1503. heart.

  1504. His letter was

  1505. the church in

  1506. Corinth.

  1507. You only had to

  1508. look at what

  1509. had happened in

  1510. the church, at

  1511. the change that

  1512. had been in

  1513. people's lives, and

  1514. you could see that

  1515. the work that Paul

  1516. had done among

  1517. them was genuine,

  1518. that his gospel

  1519. really could bring

  1520. changes.

  1521. He doesn't repeat

  1522. that here, but he

  1523. makes a vital point.

  1524. Right at the end

  1525. of the chapter,

  1526. verse 18, he

  1527. says,

1528. it is not the one

  1529. who commends

  1530. himself who is

  1531. approved, but the

  1532. one whom the

  1533. Lord

  1534. commends.

  1535. Ultimately, when

  1536. we get praise from

  1537. others, we enjoy

  1538. it, let's face

  1539. it.

  1540. If someone comes

  1541. and says, you

  1542. did a really good

  1543. job on something,

  1544. that's good, and

  1545. it gives us a

  1546. boost, and it's

  1547. something that we

  1548. should do for one

  1549. another, encourage

  1550. each other as we

  1551. serve the Lord

  1552. Jesus.

  1553. But ultimately, the

  1554. kind of commendation

  1555. that we get from

  1556. humans has limited

  1557. value.

1558. It will give us a

  1559. boost, it will

  1560. maybe help us,

  1561. hopefully doesn't

  1562. make us too

  1563. proud, but it's

  1564. not what we

  1565. should be doing

  1566. things for.

  1567. Paul says what

  1568. really matters is

  1569. the commendation of

  1570. Christ.

  1571. What really matters

  1572. is serving

  1573. faithfully so that

  1574. when we face the

  1575. Lord Jesus and give

  1576. account for our

  1577. lives, he's able

  1578. to say to us,

  1579. well done, good

  1580. and faithful

  1581. servant.

  1582. And that is worth

  1583. so much more than

  1584. any praise or

  1585. commendation we may

  1586. get from others.

  1587. Let's not look just

  1588. at the things that

  1589. we think will be

  1590. popular with others

  1591. that will make them

  1592. think highly of us.

  1593. In our service for

  1594. the Lord Jesus, let

1595. us do it for him,

1596. and much of it may

  1597. be unseen, but he,

  1598. our Father, our

  1599. Heavenly Father, sees

  1600. what is done in

  1601. secret, and he will

  1602. reward us.

  1603. If we do things

  1604. deliberately for the

  1605. praise of humans and

  1606. we get that, Jesus

  1607. tells us we'll have

  1608. had our reward in

  1609. full at that point.

  1610. So let's serve with

  1611. the right motives, and

  1612. let's have all the

  1613. right priorities that

  1614. Paul talks about.

  1615. Now just very

  1616. quickly, let me bring

  1617. things together.

  1618. This is my favourite

  1619. book on 2 Corinthians,

  1620. written by Jonathan

  1621. Lamb, who's preached

  1622. several times at this

  1623. church, and it's

  1624. called integrity.

  1625. It's not a

  1626. commentary as such.

  1627. Jonathan has

  1628. written a great

  1629. commentary.

  1630. It isn't a

  1631. commentary as such,

  1632. but it's taking the

  1633. theme of integrity,

  1634. particularly integrity

  1635. and leadership, and

  1636. exploring how that

  1637. is brought out in

  1638. 2 Corinthians.

  1639. And Jonathan

  1640. identifies three

  1641. marks of integrity.

  1642. I think there's

  1643. three marks that

  1644. Paul's bringing

  1645. before us in our

  1646. passage this morning.

  1647. The first of these

  1648. is sincerity.

  1649. It is about our

  1650. motivation.

  1651. Are we doing

  1652. things to build up

  1653. the church and for

  1654. the benefit of

  1655. others, or are we

  1656. doing them for

  1657. ourselves?

  1658. Are we doing

  1659. things so that we

  1660. win the praise of

  1661. humans, or are we

  1662. doing things so that

  1663. we win the

  1664. commendation of

  1665. God?

  1666. Paul's motivation

  1667. were to develop the

  1668. mind and character of

  1669. Christ and to build

  1670. up the body of

  1671. Christ.

  1672. His motives were

  1673. sincere.

  1674. The second part of

  1675. integrity is

  1676. consistency, what

  1677. Lamb calls living

  1678. life as a whole.

  1679. Paul's opponents

  1680. accused him of

  1681. inconsistency between

  1682. his writings and

  1683. his visits.

  1684. But Paul says,

  1685. no, in verse 11,

1686. what we are in our

  1687. letters when we are

1688. absent, we will be in

  1689. our actions when we're

  1690. present.

  1691. Paul says, by

  1692. taking every thought

  1693. captive, he's able

  1694. constantly to be

  1695. obedient to Christ and

  1696. to live a consistent

  1697. Christian life.

  1698. And then the third

  1699. thing is reliability,

  1700. reflecting God's

  1701. faithfulness.

  1702. It would have been

1703. very easy for Paul to

1704. turn his back on the

  1705. church in Corinth and

  1706. to say, I'm having

  1707. nothing more to do

  1708. with it.

1709. He could move on to

  1710. other churches that

1711. might be a bit more

  1712. receptive to what he

  1713. had to say.

  1714. But no, he'd committed

  1715. himself to the church,

1716. to boarding it up, and

1717. he was going to see

  1718. it through.

  1719. He was faithful not

1720. just to God, but to

1721. the church as well, and

  1722. even willing to change

1723. his plans to meet its

  1724. needs.

1725. So can I challenge us?

  1726. Are we people of

  1727. integrity, of

  1728. sincerity, of

  1729. consistency, of

  1730. reliability?

1731. And let me end with

  1732. two American

  1733. presidents.

  1734. Barack Obama and

  1735. Jimmy Carter.

  1736. Whatever you think of

  1737. their politics, I

  1738. think these two are

  1739. widely regarded as

  1740. men who had

  1741. integrity, who had

  1742. compassion.

  1743. As you probably know,

  1744. Jimmy Carter died

  1745. towards the end of

  1746. last year.

  1747. He drove her 100.

1748. And I think the best

1749. tribute I saw to him

  1750. came from Barack

  1751. Obama.

  1752. Obama's tribute

  1753. highlighted the fact

  1754. that Jimmy Carter

  1755. was a Christian,

  1756. indeed, that he

  1757. preached quite

  1758. regularly in the

  1759. Baptist church that

  1760. he attended.

  1761. As an aside, Jimmy

  1762. Carter a few weeks

  1763. ago won his fourth

  1764. Grammy for some of

  1765. his sermons that he

  1766. preached at that

  1767. church.

  1768. Barack Obama said

  1769. this about Carter.

  1770. He believed some

  1771. things were more

  1772. important than

  1773. re-election.

  1774. Things like

  1775. integrity, respect,

  1776. and compassion.

  1777. Jimmy Carter

  1778. believed that we

  1779. are all created in

  1780. God's image.

  1781. He didn't just

  1782. profess these

  1783. values.

  1784. He embodied

  1785. them.

  1786. And in doing so,

  1787. he taught all of

  1788. us what it means

1789. to live a life of

  1790. grace, dignity,

  1791. justice, and

  1792. service.

  1793. That's a wonderful

  1794. tribute, isn't it?

  1795. I wonder if it

  1796. could be said of

  1797. us.

  1798. Do we have

  1799. integrity in our

  1800. lives?

  1801. Are our priorities

  1802. the gentleness of

  1803. Christ, the mind of

  1804. Christ, the body of

  1805. Christ, the gospel of

  1806. Christ, and the

  1807. commendation of

  1808. Christ?

1809. And I need to ask

  1810. the question again,

  1811. do we all have

  1812. Christ in our lives?

  1813. Is our faith in

  1814. him?

  1815. Let me pray, and

  1816. then we're going to

  1817. look at some

  1818. questions.

  1819. Father, we thank you

  1820. for your word.

1821. We thank you for the

  1822. power with which

  1823. Paul writes as he

  1824. counters his

  1825. critics, but yet

  1826. highlights to us

  1827. how we should live

  1828. our lives.

  1829. Help us to be

  1830. people who are

  1831. marked by our love

  1832. of the Lord Jesus

  1833. and our love

  1834. of the church.

  1835. Help all of us

  1836. too to be sure

  1837. that our faith is

  1838. in Jesus, that we

  1839. are following him

  1840. and living for him.

  1841. Thank you for your

  1842. presence this morning,

  1843. we pray you'll be

1844. with us now as we

  1845. continue together.

  1846. In Jesus' name.

  1847. Amen.

  1848. I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think

  1849. I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think
