  1. Well, thanks very much, Niamh, for reading that for us today.

  2. Yeah, my name is Craig.

  3. I'm a pastor in training here at Brunsfield.

  4. And my wife, Josie, and I have been here for about six months now.

  5. And we're really enjoying getting to know the church family here.

  6. And it's my pleasure to take us to our next bit of 2 Corinthians.

  7. If you've been here for a while, you know that we've been tracking through 2 Corinthians.

  8. And we have reached chapter 11.

  9. We really are in the business end of the book now.

  10. Just a couple of chapters to go.

  11. But I'm going to start by asking this question that I've put up on the screen there.

  12. Have you ever been scammed?

  13. Now, I'm sure all of us have seen the news stories of people being scammed out of large sums of money.

  14. It seems to happen all the time.

  15. According to a leading UK fraud prevention service, in 2024, people in the UK lost 11 billion pounds to scams.

  16. It's big business.

  17. So I ask you again, have you ever been scammed?

  18. Maybe you received a dodgy text from a number that you didn't recognise.

  19. Or maybe you bought something online that turned out to not be quite what it had been made out to be.

  20. Or maybe there was a stranger on the phone who convinced you that they were from the bank and asked you to send some money over.

  21. There's lots of different tactics that the scammers use.

  22. And the thing that people always say after being scammed is,

  23. I can't believe I fell for that.

  24. I thought I knew better.

  25. I definitely won't fall for that sort of thing again.

  26. Even though it happens all the time to so many people,

  27. we seem to have this confidence in ourselves that we can detect the real from the counterfeit.

  28. But what about here in church?

  29. How do we know we're following the real Jesus?

  30. Is the Jesus we've been taught the one who we read about in the Bible?

  31. Or is he some poor imitation?

  32. And how do we know that those who teach us and lead us in church are true messengers of the gospel?

  33. Are they the real deal?

  34. Or do they have ulterior motives?

  35. So in chapter 11 that we've just read,

  36. Paul is really concerned that the Corinthians are being scammed.

  37. They are being taught a different Jesus by people who look genuine.

  38. But the Corinthians, they may or may not know that they're being scammed.

  39. But actually, they don't seem to care.

  40. And this is a big problem for Paul.

  41. So Paul has spent much of the letter of 2 Corinthians defending himself up to this point,

  42. proving his credibility as a teacher of the gospel.

  43. But now he turns his reader's attention to his rivals,

  44. and he exposes them for who they truly are.

  45. The Corinthian teachers who have infiltrated this church,

  46. those who Paul ironically calls the super apostles,

  47. they are scammers of the worst kind.

  48. They are, in fact, servants of Satan.

  49. Strong words.

  50. But let's look at this passage and see why Paul thinks this way.

  51. So we're going to look at this passage in three sections

  52. and ask ourselves the following questions.

  53. Are you being faithful to Jesus or are you entertaining lies?

  54. Secondly, are you clear on what your leaders should look like

  55. or are you looking for the impressive?

  56. Thirdly, are you aware of the enemy

  57. or are you letting your guard down?

  58. So now that we know where we're going,

  59. let's look at verses 1 to 4 and ask our first question.

  60. Are you being faithful to Jesus or are you entertaining lies?

  61. You might have seen in the passage there

  62. that Paul begins by using a marriage metaphor

  63. to describe the Corinthians' relationship with Jesus.

  64. Paul, in his role as a minister of the gospel,

  65. had, in the past, presented the Corinthian church to Jesus

  66. like a bride is presented to a groom in a marriage ceremony.

  67. The Corinthians had entered into a solemn marriage commitment

  68. to the Lord Jesus.

  69. They had been wedded to Christ.

  70. And verse 3 tells us that they had a sincere and pure devotion to him.

  71. They have committed to love and serve Jesus.

  72. Just as Jesus had committed to love and be faithful towards them.

  73. A wedding.

  74. But Paul fears that this marriage is under threat.

  75. Not because of any unfaithfulness or wavering on Jesus' part.

  76. Paul identifies that the Corinthians are being enticed away from Jesus.

  77. Paul points the Corinthians back to Genesis 3

  78. and informs them that they,

  79. that in the same way that Eve was deceived

  80. by the cunning serpent,

  81. the Corinthians are being enticed away from their pure devotion to Jesus.

  82. The problem with Adam and Eve was that they were tempted to believe

  83. that the perfect, intimate relationship that they enjoyed with God,

  84. it wasn't good enough for them.

  85. And they needed something more.

  86. In the same way, it seems that the relationship that the Corinthians enjoy with Jesus,

  87. it's not enough for them.

  88. They're being offered something else.

  89. Then Paul says he is jealous for their love.

  90. Not because Paul himself desires their love.

  91. Rather, Paul wants God to have the things that are rightfully his.

  92. Paul wants God to be the only recipient of the Corinthians' love and worship.

  93. God desires and deserves their affection.

  94. Now, our second book of the Bible,

  95. we thought about Genesis just there.

  96. In Exodus, after God's people had messed up

  97. and broken God's law,

  98. like mere days after they'd received it.

  99. We remember Mount Sinai,

  100. we remember the tablets of stone, the Ten Commandments.

  101. So quickly after that,

  102. they messed up,

  103. they broke God's law,

  104. and they started worshiping the golden calf.

  105. God committed himself in those days,

  106. again, in a loving relationship.

  107. They'd messed up,

  108. but he says,

  109. I'm going to commit myself to you once again.

  110. And he instructs them once again,

  111. not to worship any other God.

  112. Why not?

  113. Because the Lord is a jealous God.

  114. The story in Exodus tells us that one of God's names is jealous.

  115. And God is jealous for our affection too.

  116. God desires and God deserves our affection.

  117. Now, the real question is,

  118. what are the Corinthians being drawn away to instead of Jesus?

  119. Well, we see in verse four

  120. that Paul convicts them of settling for a different Jesus

  121. than the Jesus the apostles had taught them.

  122. Paul convicts them of settling for a different spirit

  123. to the one they had received

  124. and a different gospel from the one they had accepted.

  125. When Paul first brought the good news about Jesus

  126. to the city of Corinth,

  127. this was the true gospel message.

  128. The Corinthians weren't lacking any important information.

  129. They had the full package.

  130. But since then,

  131. others have come along

  132. and they have come in

  133. and they've said,

  134. there might be something else.

  135. They're offering something superior.

  136. They're offering something truer.

  137. They're offering the Corinthians

  138. something other than Jesus.

  139. Maybe the Jesus that Paul had taught them

  140. wasn't in fact enough.

  141. Maybe they did need something more.

  142. But Paul says the Jesus he had taught them

  143. was the true Jesus,

  144. the son of God,

  145. given to die for the sins of the world

  146. and who had risen to glory.

  147. And the Holy Spirit that they had received from God

  148. on putting their trust in Jesus,

  149. he was the true Holy Spirit.

  150. They had already received him.

  151. He was already with them in the Corinthian church.

  152. He was already helping them.

  153. They didn't receive any other spirit.

  154. Now,

  155. I was wandering around

  156. the Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow on Friday

  157. and to my amazement,

  158. I came across these

  159. really convincing pieces of artwork.

  160. I couldn't believe it

  161. when I stumbled across the Mona Lisa

  162. and the sunflowers by Van Gogh

  163. hanging in the Lego store

  164. in Buchanan Galleries.

  165. What on earth were they doing there?

  166. But then I soon realized

  167. that these are not in fact

  168. the true artworks that we know,

  169. but are in fact

  170. poor imitations.

  171. But if you had the option,

  172. would you settle for hanging

  173. one of these pieces

  174. in your living room

  175. in pride of place

  176. if in actual fact

  177. you had the Mona Lisa

  178. in the cupboard

  179. in the spare room?

  180. The Corinthians

  181. already had the real thing,

  182. but they were settling

  183. for something that was trash

  184. in comparison.

  185. The Corinthians

  186. were not lacking anything.

  187. There was nothing

  188. that the world

  189. or its bogus salesmen

  190. could offer them

  191. that they didn't have already.

  192. Yes,

  193. the Corinthians were sinners,

  194. but they'd been saved

  195. by grace alone,

  196. through faith alone,

  197. in Christ alone.

  198. And any message

  199. that suggested otherwise

  200. was a false message.

  201. Now,

  202. Paul doesn't pity them

  203. for going astray.

  204. He accuses them

  205. of accepting

  206. and putting up

  207. with a counterfeit gospel.

  208. One of these pieces.

  209. They're putting up

  210. with trash.

  211. And for Paul,

  212. this is a serious matter.

  213. This is serious unfaithfulness

  214. to the Jesus

  215. that they had been wedded to.

  216. So,

  217. Satan's tactic

  218. has always been

  219. to divert God's people

  220. away from wholehearted devotion

  221. to Jesus.

  222. And all God's people,

  223. that's you and I,

  224. we too must stick

  225. to the Jesus

  226. we've received,

  227. the true and glorious Jesus,

  228. and give him

  229. our pure and sincere

  230. devotion.

  231. And we're going to be

  232. devotion.

  233. So,

  234. that was

  235. our first question.

  236. But what about

  237. our leaders

  238. and our teachers,

  239. those tasked

  240. with teaching us

  241. about Jesus?

  242. How do we know

  243. if they're the real deal

  244. or bogus salesmen?

  245. So,

  246. we're going to look

  247. at verses 5 to 11 now.

  248. Are you clear

  249. on what your leaders

  250. should look like

  251. or are you looking

  252. for the impressive?

  253. So,

  254. in the next section

  255. of the passage,

  256. the first thing

  257. we see is that

  258. Paul is doing

  259. a light comparison

  260. between himself

  261. and the so-called

  262. super apostles.

  263. Now,

  264. these guys

  265. have been alluded to

  266. throughout the book

  267. so far,

  268. but they're named here.

  269. He calls them

  270. the super apostles.

  271. This is ironic,

  272. ironic way

  273. of describing them.

  274. They look

  275. really great.

  276. great.

  277. Paul is not,

  278. in fact,

  279. though,

  280. any way inferior

  281. to them.

  282. We read that

  283. in verse 5.

  284. They are excellent

  285. public speakers.

  286. They've been trained.

  287. They speak powerfully.

  288. They're engaging.

  289. They use

  290. excellent illustrations.

  291. Their teaching

  292. is interesting.

  293. It's often funny.

  294. But Paul

  295. has substance.

  296. Paul claims

  297. to have

  298. knowledge.

  299. But what does he mean?

  300. It means that

  301. Paul knows

  302. what he's talking about.

  303. To use the language

  304. of 1 Timothy,

  305. Paul isn't irreverently

  306. babbling about things

  307. he doesn't understand.

  308. Paul knows

  309. Jesus personally.

  310. He knows

  311. the scriptures

  312. and he knows

  313. how they point

  314. to Jesus.

  315. The super apostles,

  316. super apostles,

  317. they might be

  318. great,

  319. entertaining speakers,

  320. but they are fools

  321. because they don't

  322. know God

  323. or his gospel.

  324. Now,

  325. the next thing

  326. we see

  327. in verses 5 to 11

  328. is that Paul

  329. is saying

  330. he's not going

  331. to change

  332. his ways.

  333. He's not going

  334. to bend

  335. the expectations

  336. of the super apostles.

  337. And we see that

  338. when he starts

  339. talking about money.

  340. it seems

  341. that the super apostles

  342. got really offended

  343. by Paul's refusal

  344. to charge

  345. for his teaching

  346. and for receiving

  347. help from other churches.

  348. Now,

  349. I think Paul

  350. was deliberately

  351. trying to make himself

  352. look as differently

  353. as possible

  354. from these

  355. super apostles.

  356. And I think

  357. this had really

  358. riled them up.

  359. I think they're maybe

  360. saying to themselves,

  361. who does he think

  362. he is?

  363. He's taking

  364. the moral high ground

  365. by not receiving

  366. money from the

  367. Corinthians.

  368. In fact,

  369. he's undercutting

  370. our profitable

  371. business.

  372. It seems that

  373. Paul wanted to

  374. look as differently

  375. as possible

  376. to these super apostles

  377. and in this rich

  378. and wealthy city

  379. of Corinth,

  380. it meant that

  381. not receiving

  382. a wage

  383. for his teaching.

  384. Paul needs

  385. these Corinthians

  386. to see

  387. that he is not

  388. like these

  389. super apostles

  390. in any way

  391. at all.

  392. Now,

  393. in verse 10,

  394. he says that

  395. nobody will stop

  396. him from boasting.

  397. This word of boasting

  398. is language

  399. that Paul uses

  400. quite a lot

  401. in 2 Corinthians.

  402. And next week,

  403. Archie's going to

  404. take us to our

  405. next passage

  406. and Paul's going

  407. to go in

  408. full tilt

  409. on his boasting

  410. about his

  411. Christ-like credentials.

  412. But before we get

  413. there, he's saying,

  414. don't expect a

  415. different approach

  416. from me.

  417. I'm going to keep

  418. doing the things

  419. that I've always

  420. done amongst you.

  421. I'm not going to

  422. change just because

  423. the super apostles

  424. want me to change.

  425. And why does he

  426. refuse to change?

  427. Well, we learn

  428. in verse 11,

  429. it's because

  430. he loves them.

  431. If Paul was to

  432. suddenly change

  433. because of pressure

  434. from the super apostles,

  435. that would be a

  436. very unloving

  437. thing to do.

  438. For it would cause

  439. the Corinthians

  440. to doubt

  441. his gospel message.

  442. If he was to

  443. bend to their

  444. pressure and become

  445. more like them,

  446. he would end up

  447. proclaiming a very

  448. different Jesus

  449. and the way he

  450. lived would no

  451. longer back up

  452. his message.

  453. it would throw

  454. doubt on his

  455. credibility.

  456. It would throw

  457. doubt on his

  458. integrity if he

  459. suddenly started

  460. preaching a different

  461. gospel.

  462. And it would throw

  463. doubt on his

  464. distinctiveness.

  465. He would look no

  466. different to these

  467. super apostles anymore.

  468. Paul will remain

  469. consistent.

  470. He won't change

  471. his message to

  472. suit himself.

  473. He will teach the

  474. gospel faithfully

  475. in a way that

  476. promotes Jesus

  477. and not himself.

  478. Why does he do

  479. it?

  480. Because he loves

  481. Jesus and he

  482. loves the people

  483. he is teaching.

  484. And he wants them

  485. to understand this

  486. true gospel and

  487. to stick to it.

  488. Okay.

  489. Verses 12 to 11.

  490. Are you aware of

  491. the enemy or are

  492. you letting your

  493. guard down?

  494. So Paul has spent

  495. much of 2 Corinthians

  496. defending his

  497. ministry and

  498. convincing the

  499. Corinthians to get

  500. on board with his

  501. teaching.

  502. Now he wants to

  503. expose the

  504. super apostles for

  505. who they truly

  506. are.

  507. They aren't just

  508. pesky rivals but

  509. they are really

  510. dangerous enemies

  511. of Christ.

  512. You probably saw

  513. the strong language

  514. in verses 12 to

  515. 15.

  516. So for much of

  517. Paul's ministry he

  518. has been going

  519. around Europe taking

  520. the gospel with him

  521. proclaiming it to

  522. people who have

  523. never heard about

  524. Jesus but he is

  525. being followed

  526. around Europe by

  527. these false

  528. teachers.

  529. They have popped

  530. up everywhere that

  531. he had been.

  532. They were people who

  533. had positions of

  534. authority in church

  535. in leading and in

  536. teaching.

  537. They had influence

  538. and when they spoke

  539. others listened.

  540. Now we heard a

  541. little bit about

  542. these guys in

  543. Acts chapter 20

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  544. as Paul said his

  545. final words to the

  546. elders of the

  547. Ephesian church, a

  548. church much like

  549. Corinth.

  550. He warned them

  551. about such people

  552. and I've just got

  553. the relevant bit

  554. up on the screen

  555. and he says,

  556. I know that

  557. after I leave

  558. savage wolves

  559. will come in

  560. among you

  561. and will not

  562. spare the

  563. flock.

  564. Even from

  565. your own

  566. number men

  567. will arise

  568. and distort

  569. the truth

  570. in order to

  571. draw away

  572. disciples after

  573. them.

  574. So be on

  575. your guard.

  576. That's in

  577. Acts 20

  578. but back in

  579. our passage

  580. in verse 13

  581. Paul is

  582. warning the

  583. Corinthians of a

  584. very similar

  585. thing.

  586. Paul calls

  587. these guys

  588. false teachers

  589. he calls them

  590. deceitful

  591. workers.

  592. They are

  593. liars and

  594. they disguise

  595. themselves as

  596. true Christians

  597. and true

  598. teachers of the

  599. Bible.

  600. The passage

  601. says that they

  602. masquerade as

  603. apostles of

  604. Christ.

  605. Now

  606. the masquerade

  607. language just

  608. means to

  609. go about in

  610. disguise.

  611. So you might

  612. have heard of a

  613. masquerade

  614. ball.

  615. These were

  616. really popular

  617. in the past

  618. and people

  619. would go

  620. around with

  621. masks on

  622. to disguise

  623. themselves.

  624. They wanted

  625. to veil

  626. their true

  627. identity

  628. and in the

  629. same way

  630. these deceitful

  631. false teaching

  632. super apostles

  633. wear these

  634. masks and

  635. seek to veil

  636. their true

  637. identity.

  638. But Paul

  639. wants to

  640. strip these

  641. masks from

  642. their faces

  643. and expose

  644. them for

  645. who they

  646. truly are

  647. loud and

  648. clear.

  649. Verse 15

  650. we read

  651. they are

  652. servants of

  653. Satan.

  654. And Paul

  655. explains that

  656. even Satan

  657. himself disguises

  658. himself as a

  659. angel of

  660. light.

  661. So it's no

  662. surprise then

  663. that his

  664. followers likewise

  665. pretend to be

  666. something that

  667. they are not.

  668. And these

  669. false teachers

  670. they don't

  671. just keep

  672. to themselves

  673. but they

  674. seek to

  675. infiltrate

  676. weed their

  677. way in

  678. and they

  679. seek to

  680. disrupt

  681. churches

  682. just like

  683. their

  684. master.

  685. Now we

  686. as Christians

  687. living in

  688. the 21st

  689. century we

  690. must also

  691. be aware

  692. of the

  693. spiritual

  694. reality of

  695. these things

  696. even in

  697. our day.

  698. This wasn't

  699. just an

  700. issue back

  701. then but

  702. it's a

  703. contemporary

  704. issue too.

  705. There are

  706. enemies of

  707. the gospel

  708. who are

  709. wittingly

  710. or unwittingly

  711. carrying out

  712. the will of

  713. Satan.

  714. They oppose

  715. Jesus.

  716. They oppose

  717. his church.

  718. And Paul

  719. told the

  720. Ephesian

  721. elders to

  722. be on

  723. their guard

  724. and we

  725. too are

  726. to be on

  727. our guard

  728. against false

  729. teachers and

  730. false teaching.

  731. But I

  732. don't want

  733. you to

  734. freak out.

  735. We're not

  736. to start

  737. freaking out

  738. and start

  739. looking around

  740. every corner

  741. for things

  742. which aren't

  743. as they

  744. seem.

  745. We are

  746. to have

  747. a quiet

  748. confidence

  749. in our

  750. strong and

  751. mighty

  752. Savior and

  753. in his

  754. spirit which

  755. leads us

  756. and dwells

  757. within us.

  758. We must

  759. know that

  760. Satan is

  761. active and

  762. his agents

  763. are active

  764. but we

  765. also must

  766. know that

  767. Christ is

  768. also active

  769. and he is

  770. sitting on

  771. his throne

  772. today.

  773. he has

  774. already

  775. claimed the

  776. victory.

  777. But what

  778. of these

  779. false

  780. teachers?

  781. Well we

  782. read in

  783. verse 15

  784. these

  785. false

  786. teachers

  787. will get

  788. what their

  789. actions

  790. deserve

  791. for opposing

  792. Jesus and

  793. siding with

  794. Satan.

  795. Their end

  796. has already

  797. been declared

  798. but we

  799. must still

  800. be on our

  801. guard today.

  802. So as we

  803. seek to

  804. apply this

  805. passage and

  806. bring it to

  807. a close I

  808. want us to

  809. think about

  810. two D's.

  811. We're going

  812. to think

  813. about devotion

  814. and we're

  815. going to

  816. think about

  817. discernment.

  818. So let's

  819. first think

  820. about our

  821. devotion.

  822. Have you

  823. gotten on

  824. board with

  825. Jesus?

  826. Now we

  827. thought about

  828. that at

  829. the beginning

  830. these

  831. Corinthians

  832. were being

  833. led away

  834. from the

  835. Jesus that

  836. they knew.

  837. Have you

  838. gotten on

  839. board with

  840. Jesus?

  841. Have you

  842. trusted in

  843. his death

  844. and resurrection?

  845. so that you

  846. might be

  847. saved from

  848. your sins?

  849. Are you

  850. a Christian?

  851. And if

  852. so, how

  853. is your

  854. devotion to

  855. Jesus?

  856. Maybe you've

  857. been following

  858. for a long

  859. time, maybe

  860. a short

  861. time.

  862. Do you

  863. love him?

  864. Do you

  865. love Jesus?

  866. Some of us

  867. have known

  868. him for

  869. quite a long

  870. time.

  871. Do you

  872. still love

  873. him?

  874. love him?

  875. Or have

  876. you forsaken

  877. the love

  878. that you

  879. had for

  880. him at

  881. first?

  882. Are you

  883. living faithfully

  884. to him

  885. like in a

  886. faithful

  887. marriage?

  888. Or is

  889. there anything

  890. getting in

  891. the way of

  892. your relationship

  893. with him?

  894. God is

  895. jealous for

  896. our affection.

  897. He deserves

  898. our everything.

  899. Are we

  900. giving him

  901. the love

  902. he deserves?

  903. do we

  904. still love

  905. him?

  906. Are you

  907. entertaining

  908. anything in

  909. your life

  910. that might

  911. lead you

  912. astray from

  913. him?

  914. Is the

  915. Jesus or

  916. the spirit

  917. or the

  918. gospel that

  919. you're

  920. settling for

  921. actually a

  922. forgery of

  923. the real

  924. thing?

  925. How does

  926. it match

  927. up to what

  928. you first

  929. learned?

  930. Secondly,

  931. we need to

  932. think about

  933. our discernment.

  934. We need to

  935. carefully examine

  936. the message

  937. and the

  938. messenger.

  939. This means

  940. examining what

  941. I or

  942. Graham or

  943. Archie or

  944. any of the

  945. elders or

  946. anybody who

  947. comes up the

  948. front on a

  949. Sunday,

  950. examining what

  951. they say.

  952. Are we

  953. saying what

  954. the Bible

  955. says?

  956. And that's

  957. why we

  958. often tell

  959. you to keep

  960. your Bibles

  961. open on the

  962. pews and to

  963. scan through

  964. as we teach

  965. to see if we

  966. are saying what

  967. the Bible

  968. passage is

  969. saying.

  970. Now, maybe

  971. in the future

  972. if you move

  973. to another

  974. town, you

  975. might be

  976. church searching,

  977. you might be

  978. looking for a

  979. good gospel

  980. church somewhere,

  981. or maybe you

  982. might find

  983. yourself in the

  984. future looking

  985. to appoint a

  986. new pastor.

  987. Now, if you

  988. ever find

  989. yourselves in

  990. one of those

  991. situations, if

  992. you're looking

  993. for someone to

  994. come and lead

  995. you spiritually,

  996. I want you to

  997. remember this

  998. passage and

  999. don't aim for

  1000. impressiveness.

  1001. Don't aim for

  1002. people who can

  1003. achieve results.

  1004. Don't even look

  1005. for people who

  1006. are entertaining.

  1007. Paul doesn't

  1008. value those

  1009. things.

  1010. First, if you

  1011. find yourself in

  1012. one of these

  1013. situations, either

  1014. looking for a

  1015. church or looking

  1016. to appoint someone

  1017. new, ask

  1018. yourself this

  1019. question first.

  1020. Does this

  1021. teacher know

  1022. Jesus personally?

  1023. Do they actually

  1024. love Jesus and

  1025. love his people?

  1026. Do they speak

  1027. well of Jesus?

  1028. Do they say

  1029. true things about

  1030. him?

  1031. Does what they

  1032. say stack up

  1033. with what the

  1034. Bible says?

  1035. The way people

  1036. speak about

  1037. Jesus shows

  1038. whether they are

  1039. devoted to him

  1040. or not.

  1041. We need to

  1042. carefully examine

  1043. the messenger.

  1044. We thought about

  1045. examining the

  1046. message.

  1047. What do they

  1048. say?

  1049. We need to

  1050. examine the

  1051. messenger.

  1052. Do they have

  1053. a godly

  1054. character?

  1055. Jesus says

  1056. that you can

  1057. tell a

  1058. scammer from

  1059. a faithful

  1060. teacher by

  1061. the fruit that

  1062. they bear.

  1063. I've got some

  1064. more verses.

  1065. This is from

  1066. Matthew chapter

  1067. seven.

  1068. Jesus says

  1069. these words,

  1070. watch out for

  1071. false prophets.

  1072. They come to

  1073. you in sheep's

  1074. clothing, but

  1075. inwardly they

  1076. are ferocious

  1077. wolves.

  1078. By their

  1079. fruit you will

  1080. recognize them.

  1081. Do people pick

  1082. grapes from

  1083. thorn bushes or

  1084. figs from

  1085. thistles?

  1086. Likewise, every

  1087. good tree bears

  1088. good fruit, but

  1089. a bad tree bears

  1090. bad fruit.

  1091. Skipping on,

  1092. thus by their

  1093. fruit you will

  1094. recognize them.

  1095. These messengers.

  1096. Now their message

  1097. might be really

  1098. good.

  1099. These guys, they

  1100. might look like

  1101. the real deal,

  1102. but how do they

  1103. treat people?

  1104. How are they

  1105. with their

  1106. families?

  1107. What are they

  1108. like in the

  1109. pews after the

  1110. service?

  1111. What are they

  1112. like in the

  1113. tea and coffee

  1114. time?

  1115. How do they

  1116. treat people?

  1117. What are they

  1118. like?

  1119. What is their

  1120. character like?

  1121. We need to be

  1122. examining these

  1123. people's character

  1124. and see if the

  1125. fruit that they

  1126. are bearing in

  1127. their lives, if

  1128. it is good

  1129. fruit.

  1130. So examine the

  1131. fruit that they

  1132. bear in their

  1133. lives.

  1134. Now like the

  1135. experts in fraud

  1136. detection, so you

  1137. know these people

  1138. who examine

  1139. money, they

  1140. look out for

  1141. money that's

  1142. fake.

  1143. These people, they

  1144. know the paper

  1145. money so well.

  1146. They know all

  1147. its patterns and

  1148. its intricacies.

  1149. They know all the

  1150. things that should

  1151. be there on that

  1152. note.

  1153. So that when

  1154. something else

  1155. comes along that's

  1156. a fake, they can

  1157. see straight away,

  1158. oh hold on a

  1159. minute, it doesn't

  1160. have this or it

  1161. doesn't have that.

  1162. Now another

  1163. example might be

  1164. thinking about

  1165. painting.

  1166. So by knowing

  1167. the characteristics

  1168. of a famous

  1169. painter's work, so

  1170. maybe the brush

  1171. strokes that they

  1172. tend to employ or

  1173. the colour

  1174. combinations that

  1175. they prefer, by

  1176. knowing their work

  1177. so well, the

  1178. things that they

  1179. use in their

  1180. work, when a

  1181. fake comes along

1182. you will spot it a

  1183. mile off because

  1184. it will fail to

  1185. match up with the

  1186. real thing.

  1187. So how closely

  1188. does the

  1189. messenger resemble

  1190. Jesus?

  1191. The more time

  1192. that we spend

  1193. getting to know

  1194. Jesus, seeing

  1195. how Jesus loves

  1196. others, seeing

  1197. how Jesus trusted

  1198. the Father, seeing

  1199. how Jesus acted

  1200. not in his own

  1201. interests but in

  1202. the interests of

  1203. others, as we see

  1204. him more and more

  1205. clearly, as we know

  1206. what he looks like,

  1207. then the more

  1208. clearly you can tell

  1209. one of his true

  1210. messengers.

  1211. his messengers

  1212. should look like

  1213. Jesus.

  1214. We need to know

  1215. our messengers, we

  1216. need to know what

  1217. they look like, their

  1218. lives.

1219. Now this is why we

  1220. shouldn't depend on

  1221. online preachers to

  1222. teach us.

  1223. Now I'm not talking

  1224. about those who

  1225. for our live stream

  1226. is a bit of a

  1227. lifeline because they

  1228. can't be with us,

1229. but we need to be

  1230. wary of depending on

  1231. online teaching to

  1232. supplement our

  1233. understanding of the

  1234. Bible.

  1235. There's a lot of

  1236. very good teaching

  1237. online, I'm not

  1238. denying that, but

  1239. there's a lot of

  1240. false teaching on

  1241. there too.

  1242. And sometimes it's

  1243. hard to tell the

  1244. difference.

  1245. The online pastor

  1246. might preach a

  1247. really good message,

  1248. but you don't

  1249. actually know them.

  1250. You can't examine

  1251. their character, you

  1252. don't know what

  1253. their motives are,

  1254. and you can't

  1255. examine how they

  1256. love others because

  1257. you've never seen

  1258. them in action.

  1259. God intended his

  1260. word to be taught

  1261. in the local

  1262. church.

1263. So if you can, if

  1264. you're able, sit

  1265. under the teaching of

1266. one of the leaders in

  1267. the local church.

1268. And if that's here in

  1269. Brunsfield, we love

  1270. that we have you

  1271. here.

1272. But if not, if you're

  1273. ever looking for a

  1274. church, sit under the

  1275. teaching of the local

  1276. church, listen

  1277. carefully, and see,

  1278. examine those local

  1279. leaders, those local

  1280. messengers.

  1281. And finally, so we've

  1282. thought about examining

  1283. the message and the

  1284. messenger, but how do

  1285. we discern carefully

  1286. that D, that second

  1287. D?

1288. How do we do it?

  1289. How do we discern

  1290. well?

  1291. Well, we must examine

  1292. the message and the

  1293. messenger prayerfully

  1294. and with one

  1295. another.

  1296. We must discern

  1297. these things

  1298. prayerfully.

1299. We must ask God for

1300. clarity as we sit in

  1301. church.

1302. We must ask for his

1303. help as we sit and

  1304. listen.

  1305. That's something that we

1306. can be doing as we

  1307. come to church.

  1308. Lord, would you be

  1309. speaking to me today?

  1310. And would you be

  1311. helping the person

  1312. that's going to be

  1313. standing up?

1314. Would you help them to

  1315. speak the truth today?

1316. So we must pray, we

  1317. must discern prayerfully,

1318. and we must do these

  1319. things together, united.

1320. As a church family, we

1321. need to be depending on

  1322. Jesus to keep leading

1323. us and to help us to

  1324. spot things that come

  1325. up which maybe aren't

  1326. quite right.

  1327. We must do these

  1328. things together.

  1329. This is not about

  1330. examining the person

1331. sitting in the pew next

  1332. to you this morning,

  1333. sussing them out.

  1334. This is not about

  1335. taking cheap shots at

  1336. our leaders when they

  1337. teach us something that

  1338. we are uncomfortable

  1339. with.

  1340. This is about whether

  1341. the message that's

  1342. preached from the

  1343. front is the message

  1344. of the Bible.

  1345. And this is whether

  1346. the character, the

  1347. person that's standing

  1348. up, whether their

  1349. character matches up

  1350. with our great teacher

  1351. and Lord Jesus.

1352. And please pray for us

  1353. too.

  1354. Pray for us, your

  1355. church leaders.

1356. Pray for all those who

  1357. are involved in teaching

  1358. in church, whether it's

  1359. in creche or Sunday

  1360. school or in growth

  1361. groups or preaching on

  1362. a Sunday.

  1363. Please pray for us.

  1364. Please pray for all

  1365. those people.

1366. Ask God to help us to

  1367. teach what the Bible

  1368. says, not anything

  1369. more, not anything

1370. less, and ask God to

1371. help us depend on him

  1372. as we do it.

1373. Please pray for us that

  1374. we would be depending

1375. on our Lord Jesus to

1376. speak through us on a

  1377. Sunday.

  1378. And not through any

  1379. sort of self-confidence

  1380. but through the

  1381. strength that he

  1382. provides.

1383. So I'm going to pray

1384. and then we're going to

1385. hand back over to the

  1386. band.

  1387. Let's pray.

  1388. Our Lord Jesus, we

  1389. thank you for preserving

  1390. us.

  1391. This message in 2

  1392. Corinthians, thank you

1393. for the good and true

1394. things that we can learn

  1395. from it, even today

  1396. after so many years

  1397. since it was written.

  1398. Thank you that you

  1399. deliberately preserved

  1400. these words for us.

  1401. They are your words.

1402. This is your gospel, your

  1403. message.

1404. Lord, I pray for each

1405. one of us here today,

1406. whether we know you or

  1407. not.

1408. I pray that we would be

1409. drawn to you, that we

1410. would see you for who

1411. you are, the true king

  1412. over the universe, over

  1413. your creation, who has

1414. died for the sins of the

  1415. world, who's died to

1416. suffer in our place so

1417. that we could be saved

  1418. from our sins.

1419. I pray that we would be

1420. drawn to you, that we

  1421. would love you, Lord,

1422. that we would grow in our

  1423. love for you.

1424. Lord, some of us, we

1425. may have become cold to

  1426. you.

1427. Lord, I just pray that

  1428. you'd reignite in us a

1429. love for you and a love

  1430. for your people.

1431. I pray that we would be

1432. devoted to you and hold

  1433. fast the gospel.

1434. And Lord, I pray for us as

1435. a church that we would be

1436. on our guard, that we would

1437. be aware that we do have

1438. an enemy, but one that you

  1439. have conquered over already

1440. and who still has plans and

1441. ways that he seeks to

  1442. infiltrate and disrupt our

  1443. church.

1444. But we pray that we would

1445. hold fast to our Lord Jesus

1446. and that we would remain

1447. devoted to you and we

  1448. would discern these things

  1449. prayerfully.

1450. We'd be looking at your

1451. word and seeing how it

  1452. stacks up with what's

  1453. being preached at the

1454. front and that we would

1455. be just depending on you

  1456. together as a church

1457. family to lead us and

  1458. remain faithful to you.

1459. And so, Lord, I just want

1460. to pray all these things in

1461. the name of our powerful

  1462. Lord Jesus.

  1463. Amen.

  1464. Amen.

  1465. Amen.

  1466. Amen.
