  1. Well, thank you very much, Alistair, for reading that passage for us.

  2. We are going to be spending the next 20 minutes or so looking at this passage in John 13.

  3. ! I should introduce myself. I'm Craig. I'm a pastor in training here at Brunsfield.

  4. And I want to extend Graham's welcome, especially if this is your first time here,

  5. or maybe you've not come here too many times before. You're very welcome here.

  6. As Graham said, this is Good Friday. This is one of the most important events.

  7. In the Christian calendar. And Graham stole my thunder already. In my introduction,

  8. I was going to ask ourselves, why is this day called Good Friday? Now, you may have seen this

  9. cartoon. It's maybe a little bit far away. I'll read it out for you. You may have seen it before.

  10. I hate the term Good Friday. Why? My Lord was hanged on a tree that day.

  11. If you were going to be hanged on that day and he volunteered to take your place,

  12. how would you feel? Good. Have a nice day.

  13. Now, the reason Good Friday is called Good is because our Lord Jesus chose to die in our place on the cross so that we wouldn't have to.

  14. That is what Good Friday is all about.

  15. And we know that Easter Sunday is coming. We know that Jesus has risen.

  16. But we pause on Friday to reflect on the love and the humility of Jesus and the depths that he went to to save sinners like us.

  17. So that's what we're going to do this evening.

  18. But you may be asking, why are we spending our evening thinking about John 13?

  19. A passage all about feet.

  20. Now, that's a very good question.

  21. John 13 may seem like an odd place to go on Good Friday,

  22. but it is full of reflections of the cross.

  23. John 13 is great because we see Jesus in action and his actions, his love and his humility all point towards the cross

  24. where his love, grace and humble service was ultimately displayed.

  25. So it's my intention this evening to keep pointing forwards from John 13 to the cross

  26. to show how Jesus's love was fully displayed.

  27. So our big idea tonight is that Jesus lovingly and humbly invites all people to come to him

  28. to be washed clean from their sins and to follow in his example of love and service.

  29. That is the big idea that we're thinking about tonight.

  30. So do come along with me as we track through this story.

  31. Keep your Bibles open in front of you.

  32. We're going to make lots of references to the verses in the chapter.

  33. And we're going to start in verses 1 to 5.

  34. So just a run through of what we're going to look at.

  35. We're going to start in 1 to 5 and see that Jesus serves his followers because he loves them.

  36. Then in verses 6 to 11, we'll focus on the humility of Jesus

  37. and see how he humbly invites everyone to come to him and be washed from sin.

  38. And then finally, we're going to look at verses 12 to 17

  39. and we'll see that Jesus gives his followers an example to follow.

  40. So that's where we're going tonight.

  41. So let's start in verses 1 to 5.

  42. Jesus serves his followers because he loves them.

  43. Now, this story features Jesus and his disciples

  44. and they are spending time in Jerusalem.

  45. And we see in verse 1 that they are on the cusp of a really important festival.

  46. That is the festival of Passover.

  47. Now, Passover was a celebration of God's rescue of his people,

  48. the Israelites, from slavery in Egypt.

  49. And so they meet every year to celebrate and to remember that time.

  50. So the disciples and Jesus, they're gathered together for this festival.

  51. And the next thing we're told is that an evening meal is in progress.

  52. They are enjoying the Passover supper together.

  53. Now, this is the meal that is famously known as the Last Supper.

  54. You may have heard of that.

  55. It's depicted in a very famous piece of art.

  56. And it is the last meal that Jesus shared with his disciples

  57. before he went to his death and before he was resurrected.

  58. And in John's Gospel, there are five chapters devoted to the events

  59. and the discourse which takes place at this meal.

  60. So it is a very important scene, the Last Supper.

  61. Now, looking at our passage in verse 1,

  62. we're told that Jesus knew that the time had come

  63. for him to leave the world and go back to the Father.

  64. We see that in verse 1.

  65. Now, this means that he has entered the last and most important scene

  66. of his life, of his earthly ministry.

  67. He knows what is coming in the next 24 hours.

  68. His death on the cross, his resurrection from the dead,

  69. and finally, his ascension to heaven.

  70. That's all to come very soon.

  71. And Jesus' imminent suffering on the cross

  72. for the sins of the world,

  73. it's fully on his mind at this moment during this meal.

  74. Now, it's probably not something that you've ever thought about before,

  75. but how would you prepare if you knew you were about to suffer a horrible death?

  76. That's a bit of a grim thought, isn't it?

  77. How would you prepare yourself if you knew that was coming?

  78. I think I would give up.

  79. I think I would curl up in a ball.

  80. I want it to pass quickly.

  81. Or maybe I would try and run away and delay the inevitable.

  82. What would you do?

  83. Well, despite heading towards a horrible death,

  84. Jesus wasn't concerned about saving himself.

  85. He wasn't concerned about running away.

  86. His greatest concern was for his followers, his disciples.

  87. Now, we're told in verse 1 that having loved his disciples up till now,

  88. Jesus chose to love them to the end.

  89. Literally, Jesus chose to love them to the uttermost.

  90. Everything Jesus was about to do,

  91. from the foot washing to his suffering and death on the cross,

  92. he did it because of his immense love for his followers.

  93. Now, we have a very low view of love in our society, in our world.

  94. What are some of the things that we say that we love?

  95. What do you love?

  96. Well, I love pizza.

  97. I love dogs.

  98. I love the Star Wars franchise.

  99. That's a bit of a controversial one.

  100. Not everybody does.

  101. And I love the Scottish Islands.

  102. I love getting out and about.

  103. Now, maybe some of you might say that you love your family.

  104. You love your children or your parents or your spouse or your siblings.

  105. What do you love?

  106. Who are the people that you love?

  107. How far does your love go?

  108. How much do you love the things that you love and the people that you love?

  109. Can you quantify it?

  110. Or to ask a slightly different question.

  111. How much does God love us?

  112. Now, because of our fallen view of love, because we're sinners,

  113. we fail to appreciate the magnitude of Jesus' love for us.

  114. The love that we experience for others is only a shadow of the immense love that Jesus has for us.

  115. And I don't think we'll fully grasp how great Jesus' love is for us in this life.

  116. But Jesus loved his followers, and he demonstrated that by stooping low and washing their feet.

  117. What a strange thing to do.

  118. We're going to think a little bit more about that in a minute.

  119. But this was just a reflection of the ultimate expression of his love.

  120. As I said before, in less than 24 hours' time, Jesus would die for the ones that he loves.

  121. For his disciples, for his followers, but also for you and I.

  122. He died for us, too, on that cross.

  123. But apart from dying, what was Jesus doing on the cross?

  124. Well, he was willingly enduring the punishment of God that we deserve for our sins.

  125. Every wrong thought, every wrong word or deed that we have done,

  126. that judgmental thought that we've had for somebody else,

  127. that impatient word that we said that we snapped,

  128. or that selfish action that we performed.

  129. Jesus hung on the cross and suffered for that action,

  130. and for that thought and for that word and every other sin that we have committed in our lives,

  131. so that we wouldn't have to bear the punishment for it.

  132. So what was he doing?

  133. He was willingly suffering the punishment that we deserve for everything that we've done.

  134. And why did he endure it for us?

  135. Because he loves us to the uttermost.

  136. So in the last days and hours of Jesus' life,

  137. he sets his sights on the cross.

  138. He knows what it will cost him,

  139. but he goes towards it,

  140. because he loves undeserving sinners like you and I,

  141. and he loves us to the uttermost.

  142. Now the other thing that we see in these first few verses

  143. is that Jesus knows certain things.

  144. Now I wondered, as we went through the passage,

  145. and you can look at it again now,

  146. I wondered if you noticed all the kind of knowing

  147. or understanding language that we see.

  148. I counted seven instances of the words knowing or knew or understanding.

  149. But what does Jesus know?

  150. And what is the significance of him knowing these particular things?

  151. Well, in verse 1,

  152. Jesus knows that his death was imminent.

  153. Now, maybe if you saw it in verse 2,

  154. Jesus knows that his death is imminent,

  155. but there is a certain trouble brewing in the background.

  156. Satan is at work.

  157. He wishes to unsettle Jesus,

  158. to distract him.

  159. He wishes to swerve Jesus from his path of salvation.

  160. We're told that Satan had already prompted Judas to betray Jesus.

  161. Satan uses someone who is close to Jesus,

  162. someone who Jesus loves with that great love

  163. that we thought about a minute ago.

  164. But Jesus is not unaware.

  165. The next thing that we see that Jesus knew,

  166. it's all the way in verse 11, halfway through.

  167. Jesus knew who was going to betray him.

  168. What else does Jesus know?

  169. Verse 3,

  170. In other words,

  171. Jesus knows that he had true power and control in this situation.

  172. And we're told that Jesus knew where he had come from.

  173. And we're told that Jesus knew where he was going.

  174. Jesus had come from the throne room in heaven.

  175. Then he stepped down into earth.

  176. And Jesus was going back to that throne very soon

  177. after his death and resurrection.

  178. And as Jesus later hung on the cross,

  179. it looked like he had lost.

  180. It looked like the forces of evil had won.

  181. But even then,

  182. as Jesus gasped and struggled for breath,

  183. he knew in that moment

  184. that the whole of the created order was under his control.

  185. Even in that moment,

  186. Jesus was holding the universe together

  187. by the power of his word.

  188. What an amazing thing.

  189. And as those mockers taunted him

  190. and told him to come down from the cross,

  191. if you are indeed the Son of God,

  192. why don't you bring yourself down?

  193. Why don't you come off that cross?

  194. It doesn't look like you're so great after all.

  195. Jesus knew that he could come down,

  196. didn't he?

  197. But he chose to remain there

  198. to keep suffering until his last breath

  199. because of his tremendous love for us.

  200. He chose to remain on the cross

  201. knowing that he was suffering

  202. and dying to buy back the people that he loved

  203. from the curse of sin.

  204. And he chose to remain on the cross

  205. knowing that his destiny

  206. with the Father on the throne of heaven

  207. was sure.

  208. Can you imagine a greater expression of love?

  209. Do you know of a greater expression of love?

  210. Often when we watch movies

  211. and we see great examples of sacrifice,

  212. Hollywood is just copying this idea of Jesus.

  213. I don't think we know of a greater expression of love.

  214. Now, on the cross,

  215. Jesus was fulfilling the very words

  216. that he would go on to say

  217. a few minutes later to his friends

  218. in chapter 15.

  219. Jesus says that

  220. greater love has no one than this,

  221. that someone laid down his life for his friends.

  222. You are my friends

  223. if you do what I command you.

  224. Jesus lays down his life for his friends.

  225. That is you and I today.

  226. So with these things in his mind,

  227. what's in his mind?

  228. So his imminent death is in his mind,

  229. the forefront of his mind.

  230. In his mind is his tremendous love for his disciples

  231. and also in his mind,

  232. that knowledge of his power and his destiny.

  233. And with these things in his mind,

  234. he rises up from the table.

  235. He takes off his outer garment.

  236. He wraps a towel around his waist.

  237. He prepares a bowl of water

  238. and he begins to wash and dry

  239. the feet of his disciples.

  240. Did you see the meticulous description

  241. of Jesus' actions in these verses?

  242. The writer uses six verbs.

  243. When he could have just used one or two,

  244. he could have just said,

  245. Jesus got up and started washing the disciples' feet.

  246. This is a very visual scene.

  247. You can almost picture Jesus doing these things.

  248. Getting up,

  249. taking his outer garment off,

  250. wrapping a towel around his waist,

  251. filling the bowl with water,

  252. and then bending down.

  253. And you can imagine the disciples

  254. looking on,

  255. slightly stunned.

  256. Okay, so let's look at our next part.

  257. So verses six to 11,

  258. Jesus humbly invites everyone

  259. to come and be washed from sin.

  260. So let's get back into the action

  261. in chapter 13.

  262. Jesus comes over to Peter

  263. with a bowl of water

  264. and he expects to watch Peter's feet.

  265. Now, that might seem like a strange thing to do,

  266. but at that time in the first century

  267. in Jerusalem,

  268. this was a perfectly normal thing to do.

  269. It was a hot country

  270. and these folks likely went around wearing sandals.

  271. And by the end of the day,

  272. their feet would have been filthy.

  273. Their feet would have been covered in sweat

  274. and dust and dirt and dung

  275. that lay all over the streets in Jerusalem.

  276. So it was normal

  277. on entering someone's home

  278. to have your feet cleaned.

  279. maybe by a servant

  280. if you entered a house

  281. of someone who was rich.

  282. So,

  283. what is unusual

  284. in this instance

  285. is that Jesus performs his action

  286. in the middle of the meal.

  287. I don't know if you noticed that

  288. in verse two,

  289. that the meal has already begun.

  290. It's in progress.

  291. You've got to ask yourself the question,

  292. why had this not been done already?

  293. Why didn't someone else

  294. stoop to wash their feet?

  295. Wasn't there a servant in attendance

  296. to do this?

  297. Why didn't one of the disciples do it?

  298. These are questions

  299. that we don't have answers to,

  300. but I'm sure the disciples

  301. must have felt super awkward

  302. when Jesus got up

  303. and started to do it.

  304. Now,

  305. the reason that Peter

  306. objects

  307. so strongly

  308. to Jesus washing

  309. his feet

  310. in verse six

  311. is because he recognizes

  312. that as their master

  313. and teacher,

  314. it is completely

  315. inappropriate

  316. for Jesus

  317. to stoop

  318. and serve his followers

  319. in this slowly manner.

  320. Peter literally says

  321. in verse six,

  322. would you,

  323. such a one

  324. as you are,

  325. wash the feet

  326. of such a one

  327. as I am?

  328. Peter recognizes

  329. that Jesus

  330. is far greater

  331. than him.

  332. This was not the job

  333. for the master.

  334. We're supposed to be struck

  335. by Jesus'

  336. humility here.

  337. Jesus isn't just doing

  338. a weird thing.

  339. He's choosing

  340. to bend

  341. low.

  342. Now,

  343. just like Jesus' love,

  344. sometimes Christians

  345. can be prone

  346. to over-familiarity

  347. with the idea

  348. of Jesus

  349. having humility.

  350. But when we grasp

  351. who Jesus is

  352. and where he had

  353. come from,

  354. the heights of glory,

  355. then we can better

  356. understand how this

  357. was a lowly task

  358. for him.

  359. Think of the dirt,

  360. the sweat,

  361. and the dung

  362. that Jesus had

  363. to come into contact

  364. with as he washed

  365. their feet.

  366. Now,

  367. as we point forward

  368. to the cross again,

  369. this foot-washing scene

  370. points to an even

  371. greater example

  372. of Jesus' humility.

  373. It is at the cross

  374. where Jesus goes

  375. as low

  376. as it's possible

  377. to go

  378. to cleanse us

  379. from the dirt

  380. and dung

  381. of sin

  382. in our lives.

  383. So,

  384. Jesus stepped down

  385. from the glory

  386. of heaven

  387. and to use

  388. the words

  389. of Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  390. chapter 2,

  391. Paul describes

  392. Jesus' humility

  393. really well.

  394. Jesus steps down

  395. from the glory

  396. of heaven.

  397. He made himself

  398. nothing

  399. by taking

  400. the nature

  401. of a servant

  402. and being made

  403. in human likeness.

  404. Then he humbled

  405. himself

  406. by becoming

  407. obedient

  408. to death.

  409. We see in these

  410. verses

  411. this sort of

  412. double humbling

  413. of Jesus.

  414. he humbled

  415. himself

  416. as he stepped

  417. down

  418. to the earth

  419. and took

  420. on a human

  421. body.

  422. Then he humbled

  423. himself again

  424. as he went

  425. willingly

  426. to the cross

  427. and suffered

  428. a cruel

  429. and unjust

  430. and torturous

  431. and deeply

  432. humiliating death.

  433. Jesus' death,

  434. it wasn't just

  435. painful for him.

  436. It was deeply

  437. shocking

  438. and it was

  439. completely shameful

  440. for him.

  441. The whole point

  442. of crucifixion

  443. was to make

  444. an example

  445. of the victim.

  446. Look how

  447. terrible they are.

  448. Look how

  449. shameful a death

  450. that they are

  451. experiencing.

  452. The cross

  453. of Christ

  454. is a total

  455. scandal.

  456. Never

  457. was there

  458. one so

  459. undeserving

  460. of that sentence.

  461. The creator

  462. of the universe

  463. was put

  464. to death

  465. on a cross

  466. made of

  467. the very

  468. wood

  469. that he

  470. thought up

  471. that he

  472. designed

  473. and created.

  474. As we

  475. consider the

  476. shame

  477. and lowly

  478. nature

  479. of Jesus'

  480. death,

  481. let us be

  482. filled

  483. again

  484. with awe,

  485. with thankfulness

  486. that Jesus

  487. chose to tread

  488. this path

  489. to save us.

  490. So,

  491. we thought

  492. about the love

  493. and the humility

  494. of Jesus.

  495. But what does

  496. Jesus want to

  497. teach his

  498. disciples in

  499. this scene?

  500. Well, after

  501. a further

  502. objection from

  503. Peter in

  504. verse 8,

  505. Jesus says

  506. more firmly

  507. this time,

  508. unless I

  509. wash you,

  510. you have no

  511. part with

  512. me.

  513. Unless you

  514. accept my

  515. washing,

  516. you will

  517. have no

  518. part with

  519. me.

  520. Unless you

  521. accept what

  522. I'm doing,

  523. you can't

  524. join me in

  525. my kingdom.

  526. With the

  527. cross looming,

  528. this act of

  529. foot washing

  530. is a picture

  531. of the

  532. washing of

  533. souls that

  534. Jesus is

  535. soon to

  536. offer to

  537. all people.

  538. Jesus

  539. insisted that

  540. he washed

  541. everyone's feet

  542. in that room.

  543. Judas

  544. hasn't departed

  545. the scene

  546. yet.

  547. Jesus

  548. insists on

  549. washing all

  550. of their

  551. feet,

  552. not because

  553. the action

  554. itself cleansed

  555. their souls,

  556. it certainly

  557. did not.

  558. Jesus

  559. washes their

  560. feet because

  561. it is a

  562. clear picture

  563. of the soul

  564. cleansing that

  565. Jesus was

  566. about to

  567. offer to

  568. all people

  569. through the

  570. cross,

  571. even to

  572. people like

  573. Judas,

  574. even to

  575. people who

  576. would ultimately

  577. reject him.

  578. Jesus

  579. explains to

  580. Peter,

  581. unless I

  582. wash away

  583. your sins,

  584. Peter,

  585. you have

  586. no

  587. part with

  588. me.

  589. And Jesus

  590. speaks the

  591. same word

  592. to us

  593. today.

  594. Unless you

  595. come to

  596. Jesus and

  597. accept the

  598. soul cleansing

  599. that he

  600. offers you,

  601. then the

  602. filth and

  603. stains of

  604. sin will

  605. forever

  606. remain in

  607. your heart.

  608. There is

  609. nothing else

  610. that we can

  611. do to make

  612. ourselves clean

  613. before a

  614. holy God.

  615. Before a

  616. holy God.

  617. Only Jesus

  618. can offer

  619. the soul

  620. cleansing

  621. that we

  622. need from

  623. sin.

  624. Because he

  625. himself was

  626. without sin.

  627. He was a

  628. perfect,

  629. spotless

  630. lamb.

  631. And he was

  632. offered up as

  633. a sinless

  634. sacrifice.

  635. And his

  636. blood was

  637. poured out

  638. at the

  639. cross,

  640. purifying

  641. sinners from

  642. their uncleanness.

  643. And this is

  644. very sacrificial,

  645. ritualistic language.

  646. It pictures

  647. the sin

  648. cleansing that

  649. the Israelites

  650. went through

  651. in the Old

  652. Testament.

  653. And if you

  654. want to read

  655. a bit more

  656. about how

  657. Jesus fulfills

  658. these kind

  659. of ritual

  660. cleansing

  661. requirements,

  662. then Hebrews

  663. is a really

  664. good book

  665. to go to.

  666. But without

  667. going too

  668. much further

  669. into that,

  670. I want to

  671. say that these

  672. are the most

  673. important claims

  674. of the

  675. Christian faith.

  676. All of

  677. humanity has

  678. been defiled

  679. by sin,

  680. but Jesus

  681. offers salvation

  682. to all

  683. people,

  684. even to

  685. those who

  686. continually

  687. reject him,

  688. and he

  689. alone is

  690. able to

  691. wash us

  692. clean and

  693. make us

  694. acceptable

  695. before a

  696. holy God.

  697. These are

  698. exclusive claims

  699. of Christianity.

  700. Jesus asked

  701. everyone today,

  702. come and

  703. accept my

  704. offer of

  705. cleansing.

  706. Come to

  707. me and

  708. be made

  709. clean.

  710. Okay,

  711. finally and

  712. briefly,

  713. in verses

  714. 12 to

  715. 17,

  716. Jesus gives

  717. his followers

  718. an example

  719. to follow.

  720. In verse

  721. 12,

  722. Jesus puts

  723. back on

  724. his outer

  725. cloak.

  726. He returns

  727. to his place

  728. at the

  729. table,

  730. and he

  731. asks his

  732. disciples,

  733. do you

  734. understand

  735. what I've

  736. just done

  737. for you?

  738. Now,

  739. you rightly

  740. call me

  741. teacher and

  742. Lord,

  743. for that

  744. is who

  745. I am.

  746. So now,

  747. as I,

  748. your teacher

  749. and your

  750. Lord,

  751. have washed

  752. your feet,

  753. then you

  754. also ought

  755. to do

  756. the same

  757. for one

  758. another.

  759. Now,

  760. Jesus isn't

  761. expecting all

  762. of his

  763. followers and

  764. for Christians

  765. throughout the

  766. ages to come

  767. to wash

  768. each other's

  769. feet.

  770. Rather,

  771. this is a

  772. picture of

  773. what he

  774. was going

  775. to do.

  776. So,

  777. Jesus wants

  778. us to

  779. follow his

  780. example of

  781. stooping really

  782. low and

  783. serving others

  784. out of love.

  785. Do as I

  786. have done,

  787. he says.

  788. Now,

  789. it's like a

  790. football coach

  791. demonstrating a

  792. drill out in

  793. the practice

  794. field and

  795. expecting the

  796. players to

  797. go about

  798. the same

  799. drill.

  800. I've just

  801. shown you how

  802. to do it.

  803. now you

  804. can do it

  805. like me.

  806. Or like a

  807. master tradesman

  808. showing his

  809. apprentice how

  810. to perform a

  811. particular skill.

  812. Now that

  813. you've seen

  814. me do it,

  815. now I expect

  816. you to do

  817. it too.

  818. It's not

  819. easy and

  820. it will

  821. require us

  822. to swallow

  823. our pride

  824. and stoop

  825. low,

  826. but Jesus

  827. says himself

  828. in verse

  829. 17,

  830. there is

  831. great blessing

  832. when we

  833. choose to

  834. love and

  835. humbly serve

  836. one another

  837. in this

  838. way.

  839. Now,

  840. we've spent

  841. a lot of

  842. time this

  843. evening

  844. reflecting on

  845. the amazing

  846. love,

  847. the amazing

  848. humility that

  849. Jesus displayed

  850. on the cross

  851. in order to

  852. offer us a

  853. full and

  854. final deep

  855. clean for

  856. our souls.

  857. And we will

  858. have a moment

  859. very soon to

  860. quietly reflect

  861. and express our

  862. thanks to

  863. Jesus in

  864. our hearts

  865. as we

  866. spend time

  867. during

  868. communion.

  869. But I

  870. just want to

  871. say before

  872. we get

  873. there,

  874. for those

  875. here tonight

  876. who have

  877. not accepted

  878. Jesus'

  879. offer of

  880. cleansing

  881. and forgiveness

  882. for your

  883. sins,

  884. he offers

  885. you now

  886. to come

  887. and be

  888. clean.

  889. You can

  890. see that in

  891. these verses.

  892. You can

  893. pray to him

  894. in your heart

  895. tonight and

  896. ask him to

  897. forgive you

  898. and clean

  899. you and

  900. you can

  901. say to

  902. him,

  903. I commit

  904. to follow

  905. you with

  906. my life.

  907. I commit

  908. to follow

  909. you as

  910. my Lord

  911. and my

  912. master.

  913. And we

  914. can do

  915. that tonight

  916. if that

  917. is you.

  918. See the

  919. tremendous

  920. love that

  921. he has for

  922. you.

  923. See how

  924. low he

  925. stooped to

  926. save you.

  927. Come to

  928. him and

  929. be made

  930. clean.

  931. And for

  932. those of

  933. us who

  934. are

  935. followers of

  936. Jesus,

  937. who have

  938. been

  939. following

  940. him and

  941. have been

  942. washed

  943. by him.

  944. Now the

  945. right response

  946. to him

  947. now after

  948. being forgiven,

  949. after having

  950. our debt

  951. of sin

  952. erased,

  953. after being

  954. loved by

  955. him so

  956. much,

  957. the only

  958. appropriate

  959. response

  960. now is

  961. to worship

  962. him with

  963. praise and

  964. thankfulness

  965. and to do

  966. as he

  967. says,

  968. to swallow

  969. our pride

  970. and seek

  971. ways to

  972. serve one

  973. another

  974. humbly

  975. and lovingly.

  976. Are there

  977. ways that

  978. you could

  979. practically

  980. love and

  981. serve somebody

  982. this week?

  983. Maybe there's

  984. someone that's

  985. been on your

  986. mind.

  987. Maybe you

  988. could check

  989. in and pray

  990. for someone

  991. that you've

  992. not seen

  993. for a

  994. while.

  995. Or maybe

  996. you could go

  997. towards somebody

  998. that you

  999. know has

  1000. been struggling

  1001. even if you

  1002. don't know

  1003. what to

  1004. say.

  1005. I'll let you

  1006. fill in the

  1007. blanks in

  1008. your mind.

  1009. Who and

  1010. how can

  1011. you love

  1012. this week

  1013. and humbly

  1014. and lovingly

  1015. serve

  1016. in the same

  1017. way that

  1018. Jesus has

  1019. lovingly

  1020. and served

  1021. us?

  1022. Let's ask

  1023. him to help

  1024. us.

  1025. Let's pray.

  1026. Our Lord

  1027. Jesus,

  1028. we thank

  1029. you for

  1030. this scene

  1031. in John

  1032. 13.

  1033. We thank

  1034. you that

  1035. your life

  1036. was so

  1037. clearly set

  1038. out in the

  1039. Gospels

  1040. that we can

  1041. read it

  1042. today and

  1043. see how

  1044. you love

  1045. us.

  1046. See how

  1047. you stooped

  1048. so low

  1049. for your

  1050. disciples

  1051. in this

  1052. particular

  1053. scene but

  1054. that we

  1055. can see

  1056. how at

  1057. the cross

  1058. you went

  1059. so low

  1060. the creator

  1061. of the

  1062. universe

  1063. and you

  1064. willingly

  1065. gave your

  1066. life up

  1067. on the

  1068. cross.

  1069. You

  1070. didn't

  1071. just suffer

  1072. pain but

  1073. you endured

  1074. the wrath

  1075. and the

  1076. punishment

  1077. of God

  1078. that we

  1079. deserve

  1080. Lord.

  1081. And we

  1082. confess

  1083. Lord

  1084. Jesus

  1085. that we

  1086. have

  1087. messed

  1088. up so

  1089. many times

  1090. we've

  1091. sinned,

  1092. we've

  1093. rejected

  1094. you,

  1095. we've

  1096. told you

  1097. we don't

  1098. want anything

  1099. to do

  1100. with you

  1101. and Lord

  1102. we are

  1103. sorry for

  1104. that but

  1105. we thank

  1106. you so

  1107. much that

  1108. you have

  1109. gone to

  1110. the cross

  1111. on Good

  1112. Friday and

  1113. that you

  1114. have suffered

  1115. and died

  1116. in our

  1117. place and

  1118. that you

  1119. hold out

  1120. to us

  1121. today this

  1122. offer of

  1123. forgiveness

  1124. and washing

  1125. of our

  1126. sins and

  1127. that you

  1128. can make

  1129. us perfectly

  1130. clean and

  1131. perfectly

  1132. acceptable

  1133. before a

  1134. holy God

  1135. we thank

  1136. you that

  1137. you have

  1138. done that

  1139. for us

  1140. Lord I

  1141. just pray

  1142. for those

  1143. here tonight

  1144. who have

  1145. not grasped

  1146. what you

  1147. have done

  1148. for us

  1149. I just

  1150. pray that

  1151. you would

  1152. be speaking

  1153. to them

  1154. this evening

  1155. and that

  1156. they would

  1157. know that

  1158. tonight in

  1159. their hearts

  1160. that they

  1161. can commit

  1162. their lives

  1163. to you

  1164. they can

  1165. say sorry

  1166. for what

  1167. they've done

  1168. the sins

  1169. that they

  1170. have done

  1171. and that

  1172. know that

  1173. you will

  1174. forgive them

  1175. and Lord

  1176. for those

  1177. of us

  1178. that have

  1179. maybe been

  1180. following you

  1181. for a while

  1182. Lord I

  1183. just pray

  1184. that you'd

  1185. help us

  1186. to grasp

  1187. your

  1188. tremendous

  1189. love

  1190. and humility

  1191. to an

  1192. even greater

  1193. level than

  1194. we maybe

  1195. have before

  1196. please help

  1197. us to see

  1198. you in an

  1199. even greater

  1200. light Lord

  1201. Jesus our

  1202. Lord and

  1203. our Saviour

  1204. and our

  1205. God and

  1206. so we pray

  1207. all these

  1208. things in

  1209. your amazing

  1210. and blessed

  1211. name

  1212. Amen
