  1. Okay, well, good morning, everyone. Lovely to see you today. This is just the best day ever.

  2. ! Here's the deal. Really simply, either Christianity, sorry, either the tomb is empty or Christianity is empty.

  3. It really is as simple as that. So let me welcome you to the day of all days as it centers on the man above all men.

  4. Now, if you've got a Bible, you might want to turn to 1 Corinthians 15. If you didn't bring a Bible, you can grab one on the pews roundabout or on your phone.

  5. We're going to read it in about five minutes time and the words will be on the screen.

  6. But my aim over the next 20 minutes or so is to help us see that this is the day when everything changed.

  7. Particularly as it concerns the future. And particularly as it concerns the future of our bodies.

  8. Friends, there are contours to what Jesus achieved as he walked out of that tomb.

  9. There are contours, there are dimensions, there are glories, there are colours, there are splendours that we will never stop seeing.

  10. And it's been true in my life. The more that I've been a Christian, every single time Easter Sunday rolls around, it really is the best day of the year.

  11. But also there's just things that I see that I've never seen before. So come and see these.

  12. Now, let me try and get us into this. One of my favourite actors is a man called Eddie Redmayne.

  13. Now you might disagree with me here, but for me his finest acting performance was when he played Stephen Hawking in the film A Theory of Everything.

  14. And that's why Eddie Redmayne wrote the foreword to Stephen Hawking's last published book before he died.

  15. And it's called Brief Answers to the Big Questions, which is a bold title, I think you'll agree.

  16. The title piqued my interest in being a sucker for the buy now with one click feature on Amazon.

  17. I bought it. And here's what Eddie Redmayne writes at the end of his foreword.

  18. And I put it on the screen so that you can see it. And I'm pretty delighted with how this picture's turned out.

  19. Here's what he writes.

  20. I hope you enjoy his, talking to Stephen Hawking, I hope you enjoy his writings.

  21. And to quote Barack Obama, I hope Stephen is having fun up there among the stars.

  22. Love, Eddie.

  23. Now you've heard that line before, I'm pretty confident.

  24. The sentiment is lovely. The sentiment is lovely coming from a man like Eddie Redmayne about a man like Stephen Hawking.

  25. That is until you realise the irony of what he's written there.

  26. Because Stephen Hawking actually believed this about what happens to our bodies after we die.

  27. He says this, there is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers.

  28. That is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.

  29. Now do you see the disconnect between those two things?

  30. Here's the point.

  31. When it comes to beliefs about what happens to our bodies after we die,

  32. opinions abound.

  33. And that's not just a modern day thing.

  34. Human beings have always wondered what happens to us after we die.

  35. It has happened down the generations.

  36. It has happened across the civilisations.

  37. And this passage that we're going to briefly look at from the Bible, and we're going to hear it read in a minute,

  38. is written to a people who are living in an age and living in a city that is absolutely no different to that.

  39. This letter written by a man called Paul some 2,000 years ago to a group of Christians living their lives in the city of Corinth,

  40. which is just a little west of Athens.

  41. Now if you're up in your Greek mythology, you'll know that many Greeks of this day believed in Hades.

  42. Now if you're struggling to picture that, think Disney's Hercules.

  43. That's where my mind always goes.

  44. Hades, the god of the underworld.

  45. And as for the Romans, well many believed that humans were transformed into special empowered beings after death,

  46. and they kind of floated over family members, they watched over them.

  47. Again friends, many, many opinions about what happens to us after we die.

  48. But the Christian idea, the one that was birthed, given substance to in the first century friends,

  49. is so radically different.

  50. It is so radically different today.

  51. It is so radically different then.

  52. There is nothing like this, if I could put it like this, there is nothing like this out there on the market.

  53. So different in fact that when Paul initially told the Christians in Corinth about it,

  54. I reckon some of them were a little confused.

  55. Did we hear them right?

  56. Maybe they were a little embarrassed.

  57. And so Paul writes these verses to give both them and us clarity in a world of ambiguity.

  58. This is what happens to us after death.

  59. This is what Christians believe.

  60. Down to generations all across the world.

  61. What happens to us after we die.

  62. This is all about where the story of our lives is going.

  63. In fact it is way bigger than that.

  64. It is where the story of the whole cosmos is going.

  65. And the foundation of it all

  66. is Jesus' empty tomb.

  67. Now Jamie and Hazel are going to come and read this for us.

  68. And I just want to listen, want us to listen out for the three ideas that Paul uses here

  69. to help them and us understand it.

  70. Now just to help us as we track through this, here's the three of them.

  71. Paul is going to draw three similes.

  72. He's going to use three ideas to help them think about what it is like.

  73. The first one is like a seed.

  74. The second one is like an image.

  75. And the third one is a bit more subtle, but it's in there if you look hard enough.

  76. It's like a sheet.

  77. And if you get lost at any point, here's the big idea.

  78. That what happened to Jesus is going to one day happen to us

  79. and is going to one day happen to all of creation.

  80. So Jamie and Hazel, why don't you guys come up and we'll read this together.

  81. And let's get into it, see what God has to say to us on this Easter Sunday.

  82. Hi there, I'm Hazel.

  83. I'm Jamie.

  84. And we're going to do our reading this morning.

  85. And Graeme's already said it's from 1 Corinthians 15.

  86. So if you've not got it, if you could find it now.

  87. And if anyone needs to get the church Bibles, you'll find it on page 1157.

  88. Okay, I'm reading the first part.

  89. But someone will ask, how are the dead raised?

  90. With what kind of body will they come?

  91. How foolish!

  92. What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.

  93. When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be but just a seed,

  94. perhaps of wheat or of something else.

  95. But God gives it a body as he is determined,

  96. and to each kind of seed he gives its own body.

  97. Not all flesh is the same.

  98. People have one kind of flesh.

  99. Animals have another.

  100. Birds another.

  101. And fish another.

  102. There are also heavenly bodies.

  103. And there are earthly bodies.

  104. But the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind.

  105. And the splendor of the earthly bodies is another.

  106. The sun has one kind of splendor.

  107. The moon another.

  108. And the star is another.

  109. And star differs from star in splendor.

  110. So will it be with the resurrection of the dead.

  111. The body that is sown is perishable.

  112. It is raised imperishable.

  113. It is sown in dishonor.

  114. It is raised in glory.

  115. It is sown in weakness.

  116. It is raised in power.

  117. It is sown a natural body.

  118. It is raised a spiritual body.

  119. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

  120. So it is written,

  121. The first man Adam became a living being.

  122. The last Adam, a living, giving spirit.

  123. A life-giving spirit.

  124. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural.

  125. And after that, the spiritual.

  126. The first man was of the dust of the earth.

  127. The second man is of heaven.

  128. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth.

  129. And as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.

  130. And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man,

  131. so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.

  132. I declare to you, brothers and sisters,

  133. that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God,

  134. nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

  135. Listen, I tell you a mystery.

  136. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed.

  137. In a flash, in the twinkling of an eye,

  138. at the last trumpet.

  139. For the trumpet will sound,

  140. the dead will be risen,

  141. imperishable,

  142. and we will be changed.

  143. For the perishable must clothe itself

  144. with the imperishable,

  145. and the mortal with immortality.

  146. When the perishable has been clothed

  147. with the imperishable,

  148. and the mortal with immortality,

  149. then the saying that is written

  150. will come true.

  151. Death has been swallowed up in victory.

  152. Where, O death, is your victory?

  153. Where, O death, is your sting?

  154. The sting of death is sin,

  155. and the power of sin is the law.

  156. But thanks be to God,

  157. he gives us the victory

  158. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  159. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters,

  160. stand firm.

  161. Let nothing move you.

  162. Always give yourself fully

  163. to the work of the Lord,

  164. because you know

  165. that your labor in the Lord

  166. is not in vain.

  167. Amen.

  168. So Paul envisages

  169. that some of these Corinthians

  170. are struggling

  171. to get their head around this.

  172. The resurrection?

  173. And so Paul anticipates

  174. a question that they're going

  175. to be asking.

  176. It's verse 35,

  177. if you've got it there.

  178. How are the dead raised?

  179. In other words,

  180. how is this going to work?

  181. And see how he logically

  182. leads them through

  183. all of this.

  184. What will it be like, Paul?

  185. Well, says Paul,

  186. here's your first idea.

  187. Did you see it?

  188. It's like a seed.

  189. And here's the logic

  190. at verse 37.

  191. When you sow a seed

  192. into the ground,

  193. you're not planting

  194. what will be

  195. the final product.

  196. Do you see it?

  197. In other words,

  198. you don't plant

  199. a tiny acorn

  200. and in time

  201. it grows to be

  202. a giant acorn.

  203. Right?

  204. Like something out of

  205. James and the Giant Peach.

  206. Nor do you plant

  207. an acorn

  208. and it produces

  209. lots of little acorns

  210. just like it.

  211. No, the logic

  212. that God has woven

  213. into nature

  214. is that one day

  215. you plant an acorn

  216. but in time,

  217. oak tree.

  218. In one sense,

  219. it's the same.

  220. The DNA is all there

  221. in the seed

  222. but in another

  223. truer sense,

  224. it's been transformed

  225. into something

  226. radically

  227. and gloriously

  228. different.

  229. Now,

  230. Kate just told my thunder

  231. a little bit

  232. at the start.

  233. She was bang on.

  234. God has woven

  235. clues about the future

  236. into nature

  237. that are whispers

  238. of the resurrection,

  239. dear friends,

  240. all around us.

  241. every seed

  242. is telling us

  243. a story.

  244. Every tree

  245. is proclaiming

  246. to us

  247. a truth.

  248. The resurrection

  249. is all

  250. around us.

  251. The transformation

  252. concept

  253. is all

  254. around us.

  255. Just like that,

  256. Paul says,

  257. there are earthly bodies

  258. and there are

  259. spiritual bodies.

  260. Our earthly bodies

  261. are the seed

  262. and our spiritual

  263. bodies

  264. are the tree.

  265. It's why

  266. so many churches

  267. have you ever thought

  268. about this,

  269. have graveyards.

  270. It's what

  271. people in the past

  272. in churches

  273. believed that they

  274. were doing.

  275. They were planting

  276. the bodies

  277. of believers

  278. in anticipation

  279. that one day

  280. they will rise

  281. to this

  282. future.

  283. Now,

  284. what day is that?

  285. Well,

  286. see Paul say

  287. verse 32.

  288. He says,

  289. which is his way

  290. of saying,

  291. here's the point,

  292. this is what

  293. it will be like

  294. at the resurrection

  295. of the dead.

  296. Now,

  297. that phrase

  298. indicates

  299. that we're not

  300. talking

  301. about

  302. heaven

  303. here.

  304. Okay?

  305. Heaven being

  306. the place

  307. that Christians

  308. believe

  309. that we go

  310. if we die

  311. before Jesus

  312. comes back.

  313. Heaven is

  314. the place

  315. where we are

  316. with Jesus

  317. spiritually.

  318. But that's

  319. not,

  320. friends,

  321. our forever

  322. home.

  323. In the words

  324. of Tom Wright,

  325. I love this,

  326. no,

  327. Christians believe

  328. in life after

  329. life after

  330. death.

  331. This is talking

  332. about what

  333. will happen

  334. when Jesus

  335. comes back

  336. and when he

  337. raises the

  338. dead,

  339. every human

  340. being who's

  341. ever lived

  342. and to those

  343. who have

  344. rejected him,

  345. who have

  346. spurned the

  347. opportunity to

  348. receive him,

  349. Jesus will

  350. say,

  351. away from

  352. me.

  353. As he judges

  354. evil,

  355. he will

  356. consign them

  357. to a place

  358. of eternal

  359. punishment.

  360. But to all

  361. those who

  362. have trusted

  363. him,

  364. who have

  365. thrown

  366. themselves

  367. upon his

  368. grace,

  369. he will

  370. say,

  371. come,

  372. as he

  373. ushers in

  374. this new

  375. creation

  376. where he

  377. rules

  378. and where

  379. he reigns

  380. visibly

  381. as king.

  382. And there

  383. and then,

  384. friends,

  385. we will have

  386. transformed

  387. bodies.

  388. Verse 42,

  389. bodies that

  390. are

  391. imperishable.

  392. Now,

  393. that word

  394. should remind

  395. us of the

  396. fridge.

  397. And those

  398. foods in

  399. our fridge

  400. that have

  401. a best

  402. before date,

  403. right?

  404. Things that

  405. decay.

  406. And that's

  407. what our

  408. bodies do,

  409. right?

  410. It's why

  411. footballers

  412. don't get

  413. long contracts

  414. beyond the

  415. age of 30.

  416. It's why

  417. Ronaldo is a

  418. freak of

  419. nature,

  420. still playing

  421. and banging

  422. in the

  423. goals

  424. at 40.

  425. It's why

  426. we plan on

  427. retiring at

  428. 65,

  429. because we

  430. realise that

  431. our bodies

  432. wither and

  433. fade.

  434. But then,

  435. when Christ

  436. returns,

  437. when he

  438. ushers this

  439. new creation

  440. in,

  441. in our new

  442. resurrection

  443. bodies,

  444. that will not

  445. be a thing,

  446. because they

  447. will have

  448. been raised

  449. our bodies

  450. in glory

  451. and power.

  452. Friends,

  453. what happened

  454. to Jesus

  455. will one

  456. day happen

  457. to us

  458. and will

  459. one day

  460. happen to

  461. all of

  462. creation.

  463. And you

  464. can imagine

  465. the Corinthians

  466. thinking,

  467. well,

  468. we can just

  469. about get

  470. our heads

  471. around that

  472. whole acorn

  473. to oak

  474. tree thing.

  475. We kind

  476. of get

  477. that.

  478. But what

  479. will we

  480. look like?

  481. Well,

  482. says Paul,

  483. and here's

  484. the second

  485. idea,

  486. it's like

  487. an image.

  488. What will

  489. the spiritual

  490. body look

  491. like?

  492. Well,

  493. the minute

  494. our bodies

  495. are patterned

  496. after,

  497. see him spell

  498. this out,

  499. verse 47,

  500. the man

  501. of the dust

  502. of the earth.

  503. It's always

  504. good to be

  505. reminded,

  506. isn't it,

  507. now and again,

  508. that our

  509. bodies are

  510. our dust.

  511. I heard a

  512. comedian talk

  513. about the

  514. fact that

  515. we are

  516. just really

  517. walking

  518. bottles of

  519. water.

  520. Right now,

  521. all of us,

  522. in terms of

  523. our bodies,

  524. we look

  525. like,

  526. we look

  527. like Adam,

  528. the first

  529. human being

  530. that God

  531. made.

  532. God breathed

  533. life into

  534. him as

  535. after he

  536. formed him

  537. from the

  538. dust of

  539. the earth.

  540. We bear

  541. his

  542. resemblance,

  543. every single

  544. one of us.

  545. But then,

  546. we will

  547. look like

  548. the heavenly

  549. man.

  550. Now,

  551. who is this

  552. heavenly man?

  553. Well,

  554. it's Jesus.

  555. But if I

  556. can put it

  557. like this,

  558. which Jesus?

  559. It's not

  560. the Jesus

  561. who walked

  562. the earth,

  563. was crucified

  564. and put in

  565. the tomb,

  566. Jesus.

  567. We won't

  568. look like

  569. him.

  570. Friends,

  571. we will

  572. look like

  573. the walked

  574. out of

  575. the tomb

  576. in his

  577. resurrection

  578. body,

  579. never to

  580. die again,

  581. Jesus.

  582. Jesus.

  583. Jesus.

  584. Jesus.

  585. When he

  586. walked out

  587. of that

  588. tomb,

  589. he was

  590. the same

  591. and yet

  592. he was

  593. wonderfully

  594. different.

  595. And you

  596. get that

  597. impression

  598. as you

  599. read the

  600. gospels.

  601. His

  602. disciples,

  603. they don't

  604. recognize

  605. him.

  606. As he's

  607. talking with

  608. two of his

  609. disciples on

  610. the road to

  611. Emmaus at

  612. the end of

  613. Luke's

  614. gospel,

  615. what do

  616. they say

  617. to him

  618. as he's

  619. walking and

  620. talking?

  621. They don't

  622. recognize

  623. him.

  624. Are you

  625. the only

  626. one who

  627. doesn't

  628. know

  629. what's

  630. happened

  631. in the

  632. last few

  633. days?

  634. They don't

  635. instantly

  636. recognize

  637. him.

  638. But

  639. John 21,

  640. when the

  641. disciples are

  642. eating on

  643. the beach,

  644. they do

  645. recognize

  646. him.

  647. It's the

  648. Lord.

  649. Jesus

  650. comes to

  651. Thomas and

  652. says,

  653. would you

  654. touch the

  655. marks in

  656. my hands?

  657. So Paul

  658. writes,

  659. verse 49,

  660. just as we

  661. now bear the

  662. image of the

  663. earthly man,

  664. so then,

  665. so then,

  666. we will

  667. bear the

  668. image of

  669. the heavenly

  670. man.

  671. our bodies

  672. then,

  673. will be

  674. transformed

  675. to look

  676. like his.

  677. When will

  678. it happen?

  679. It will

  680. happen instantly,

  681. in a flash.

  682. See that

  683. verse 52,

  684. when Jesus

  685. returns,

  686. when he

  687. raises the

  688. dead,

  689. his people,

  690. those who

  691. have trusted

  692. in him,

  693. will be

  694. changed.

  695. And it's

  696. like we're

  697. given a

  698. new wardrobe.

  699. See the

  700. clothing language

  701. at verse 53,

  702. we will take

  703. off.

  704. the old

  705. clothes on

  706. which the

  707. label read

  708. perishable

  709. and mortal.

  710. And we

  711. will put

  712. on the

  713. clothes which

  714. read

  715. imperishable

  716. and

  717. immortal.

  718. That's what

  719. we will look

  720. like.

  721. We will

  722. look like

  723. him.

  724. Friends,

  725. what happened

  726. to Jesus

  727. on that

  728. day

  729. will one

  730. day happen

  731. to us

  732. and will

  733. one day

  734. happen to

  735. all of

  736. creation.

  737. okay,

  738. you hear

  739. them say,

  740. we've

  741. kind of

  742. got a

  743. better idea

  744. now of

  745. what it

  746. might look

  747. like,

  748. but what

  749. will it

  750. feel like?

  751. And this

  752. is where

  753. Paul gives

  754. them the

  755. third idea.

  756. He's saying

  757. it's like

  758. a sheet.

  759. It will

  760. feel like a

  761. sheet that

  762. was once

  763. hanging over

  764. us has

  765. now

  766. completely

  767. been

  768. lifted.

  769. Verse 54,

  770. when we're

  771. clothed with

  772. our new

  773. bodies,

  774. then the

  775. saying will

  776. come true,

  777. death has

  778. been swallowed

  779. up in

  780. victory.

  781. That will

  782. be the

  783. chant on

  784. the terraces

  785. of heaven.

  786. As I've

  787. heard somebody

  788. once put

  789. it,

  790. you're not

  791. stinging

  792. anymore.

  793. And he's

  794. quoting there

  795. from Isaiah

  796. 25,

  797. God there

  798. is talking

  799. about how

  800. one day

  801. he will

  802. destroy

  803. the sheet

  804. that

  805. currently

  806. hangs over

  807. all of

  808. humanity,

  809. the sheet

  810. of death

  811. and all

  812. its

  813. children,

  814. grief,

  815. pain,

  816. suffering,

  817. loss.

  818. Friends,

  819. we are

  820. currently

  821. living under

  822. the sheet.

  823. We are

  824. like

  825. hedgehogs.

  826. We've got

  827. so used to

  828. living underground

  829. it.

  830. We've got

  831. no categories

  832. really to

  833. describe what

  834. life is like

  835. up there in

  836. the light

  837. because we're

  838. so used to

  839. the dark.

  840. We cannot

  841. fathom a

  842. world without

  843. sin.

  844. We cannot

  845. imagine a

  846. world that

  847. is free of

  848. crime and

  849. of sickness

  850. and of

  851. pain and

  852. of death.

  853. Friends,

  854. some of us,

  855. I know we are

  856. right there

  857. right now.

  858. We are

  859. feeling the

  860. sting of

  861. death and

  862. let this

  863. come as

  864. a wonderful

  865. balm for

  866. your soul.

  867. There is

  868. going to be

  869. a place

  870. where there

  871. are no

  872. more police

  873. stations

  874. and where

  875. doctors

  876. everywhere will

  877. have been

  878. made redundant.

  879. Our God

  880. is telling

  881. us that

  882. one day

  883. he will

  884. fully and

  885. finally act

  886. to take

  887. away the

  888. sheet that

  889. covers us

  890. at the

  891. minute.

  892. And like

  893. some kind

  894. of giant

  895. Pac-Man,

  896. he's going

  897. to swallow

  898. it up

  899. forever.

  900. And with

  901. it gone,

  902. he will

  903. wipe away

  904. tears.

  905. You ever

  906. thought about

  907. the fact

  908. that there's

  909. coming a

  910. day when

  911. you will

  912. have cried

  913. your last

  914. tear?

  915. And he

  916. will remove

  917. our disgrace

  918. and our

  919. shame.

  920. Fully

  921. and finally,

  922. friends,

  923. we will be

  924. rid of the

  925. sin that

  926. plagues us

  927. so often.

  928. And it's

  929. not just our

  930. bodies that

  931. will go through

  932. this transformation.

  933. The entire

  934. cosmos will

  935. go through

  936. it as

  937. well.

  938. And then

  939. God will

  940. sing over

  941. us,

  942. where,

  943. oh,

  944. death is

  945. your

  946. victory?

  947. Where,

  948. oh,

  949. death is

  950. your

  951. sting?

  952. And we've

  953. got to

  954. understand

  955. that Christ

  956. Jesus,

  957. on that

  958. day,

  959. if our

  960. faith is

  961. in him,

  962. that was

  963. our

  964. resurrection

  965. day too

  966. in a

  967. sense.

  968. All that

  969. he achieved

  970. there,

  971. because our

  972. faith is

  973. in him,

  974. friends,

  975. that victory

  976. is now

  977. our victory.

  978. on that

  979. day will

  980. be our

  981. victory.

  982. Friends,

  983. right now,

  984. know today

  985. that you

  986. are free

  987. from the

  988. penalty of

  989. sin,

  990. because Jesus

  991. died on the

  992. cross in

  993. our place

  994. for our

  995. sin.

  996. And that

  997. can be yours

  998. this morning

  999. if you put

  1000. your trust

  1001. in him.

  1002. We are free

  1003. from the

  1004. penalty of

  1005. it.

  1006. When he

  1007. walked out

  1008. that tomb,

  1009. he showed

  1010. the price

  1011. has been

  1012. paid.

  1013. And we

  1014. are free

  1015. now from

  1016. the power

  1017. of sin.

  1018. Because his

  1019. spirit lives

  1020. in us,

  1021. helping us

  1022. to say

  1023. no to

  1024. sin and

  1025. yes to

  1026. sin,

  1027. the things

  1028. that used

  1029. to dominate

  1030. and direct

  1031. us.

  1032. We are

  1033. free from

  1034. the power

  1035. of sin.

  1036. And one

  1037. day we

  1038. will be

  1039. free from

  1040. the presence

  1041. of sin

  1042. and death

  1043. because we

  1044. will be in

  1045. the very

  1046. presence of

  1047. the God

  1048. who redeemed

  1049. us and

  1050. saved us

  1051. and brought

  1052. him to

  1053. himself.

  1054. Do you

  1055. see that

  1056. what happened

  1057. to Jesus

  1058. on that

  1059. day will

  1060. one day

  1061. when he

  1062. returns

  1063. gloriously

  1064. happen to

  1065. us and

  1066. it will

  1067. happen to

  1068. all of

  1069. creation.

  1070. Friends,

  1071. there are

  1072. contours,

  1073. there are

  1074. dimensions,

  1075. there are

  1076. colours,

  1077. there are

  1078. glories,

  1079. there are

  1080. splendours

  1081. to this

  1082. day that

  1083. we should

  1084. never stop

  1085. breathing in

  1086. and living

  1087. in.

  1088. This is

  1089. your future.

  1090. If your

  1091. trust is in

  1092. him today,

  1093. no matter

  1094. how you're

  1095. feeling,

  1096. no matter

  1097. how weak

  1098. you think

  1099. your faith

  1100. is,

  1101. no matter

  1102. how painful

  1103. it might

  1104. feel right

  1105. now,

  1106. this is

  1107. your future.

  1108. And so

  1109. as we begin

  1110. to draw

  1111. this to a

  1112. close,

  1113. can I just

  1114. leave you

  1115. with one

  1116. question?

  1117. And it

  1118. is brought

  1119. to you by

  1120. a band

  1121. called

  1122. Keen.

  1123. And they

  1124. had a

  1125. song,

  1126. I remember

  1127. when I

  1128. was at

  1129. uni this

  1130. came out,

  1131. it was

  1132. called

  1133. Somewhere

  1134. Only We

  1135. Know and

  1136. it kind

  1137. of made

  1138. a comeback

  1139. last summer

  1140. and that's

  1141. why it's

  1142. on my

  1143. Spotify

  1144. playlist

  1145. now.

  1146. But this

  1147. is the

  1148. song,

  1149. oh simple

  1150. thing,

  1151. where have

  1152. you gone?

  1153. I'm getting

  1154. old and I

  1155. need something

  1156. to rely on.

  1157. And so here's

  1158. the question

  1159. friends,

  1160. what are you

  1161. relying on?

  1162. You know,

  1163. there's a

  1164. man in the

  1165. States,

  1166. his name

  1167. is Don

  1168. Carson.

  1169. He's one

  1170. of the

  1171. greatest

  1172. Christian

  1173. thinkers I

  1174. think of

  1175. the last

  1176. couple of

  1177. decades.

  1178. He's now

  1179. aged 78.

  1180. He's from

  1181. Canada and

  1182. he's been

  1183. suffering in

  1184. the last

  1185. few years of

  1186. his life

  1187. from Parkinson's

  1188. disease.

  1189. We know

  1190. how horrendous

  1191. a thing that

  1192. is.

  1193. And he

  1194. wrote an

  1195. open letter

  1196. recently to

  1197. his friends

  1198. about his

  1199. decision to

  1200. retire from

  1201. public ministry.

  1202. He just feels

  1203. like he hasn't

  1204. got the energy

  1205. to do it.

  1206. And in the

  1207. letter he

  1208. talked about

  1209. how the

  1210. limitations of

  1211. that disease

  1212. are beginning

  1213. to take

  1214. its toll

  1215. on his

  1216. body.

  1217. Physically

  1218. it's slowing

  1219. him down.

  1220. But by

  1221. far the

  1222. hardest part

  1223. of it is

  1224. the impact

  1225. that it's

  1226. having on

  1227. his mind.

  1228. He recalls

  1229. in this

  1230. letter trying

  1231. to convince

  1232. his neurologist

  1233. that they

  1234. were in

  1235. fact living

  1236. in 2008.

  1237. And he

  1238. was unable

  1239. to remember

  1240. the name

  1241. of the

  1242. first

  1243. president

  1244. of the

  1245. United

  1246. States.

  1247. And you

  1248. can hear

  1249. in this

  1250. letter his

  1251. heartbreak

  1252. that cognitively

  1253. he's beginning

  1254. to lose it a

  1255. little bit.

  1256. But here's

  1257. what he said

  1258. despite the

  1259. heartbreak of

  1260. that update

  1261. here's how he

  1262. ended that

  1263. letter.

  1264. He said this.

  1265. He said

  1266. I am not

  1267. suffering from

  1268. anything that

  1269. a good

  1270. resurrection

  1271. can't fix.

  1272. Do you

  1273. hear the

  1274. faith in

  1275. those words?

  1276. As horrible

  1277. as that is

  1278. that is not

  1279. where his

  1280. story ends.

  1281. Friends

  1282. there is a

  1283. new great

  1284. day in our

  1285. diaries.

  1286. Jesus'

  1287. resurrection

  1288. is the

  1289. beginning of

  1290. the remaking

  1291. of all

  1292. things.

  1293. His

  1294. glorious

  1295. new life

  1296. his total

  1297. defeat of

  1298. death he

  1299. will powerfully

  1300. share with

  1301. all those

  1302. who come

  1303. to him

  1304. today.

  1305. This

  1306. world is

  1307. not all

  1308. that there

  1309. is.

  1310. This

  1311. life is

  1312. not how

  1313. it will

  1314. remain.

  1315. God has

  1316. stepped into

  1317. the world

  1318. to redeem

  1319. it.

  1320. And if you

  1321. know him

  1322. know that

  1323. this is your

  1324. future.

  1325. Verse 58

  1326. this is why

  1327. he can write

  1328. this.

  1329. Stand

  1330. firm.

  1331. You see it

  1332. in the text

  1333. verse 58

  1334. stand firm.

  1335. Let nothing

  1336. move you.

  1337. Give

  1338. yourselves

  1339. fully to

  1340. the work

  1341. of the

  1342. Lord

  1343. knowing that

  1344. your labor

  1345. your work

  1346. for him.

  1347. Do you ever

  1348. think this to

  1349. yourself?

  1350. Does it

  1351. making any

  1352. difference?

  1353. What's the

  1354. point?

  1355. Here's what

  1356. Paul says.

  1357. Know that

  1358. your labor

  1359. for him

  1360. your trust

  1361. in him

  1362. is not

  1363. in vain.

  1364. And so

  1365. that's why

  1366. Isaiah 25

  1367. God's people

  1368. declare in

  1369. that day

  1370. this is our

  1371. God.

  1372. We waited

  1373. for him

  1374. and he

  1375. came if I

  1376. can paraphrase

  1377. that he

  1378. came and

  1379. he triumphed

  1380. for us.

  1381. Friends our

  1382. labor for him

  1383. and our trust

  1384. in him

  1385. is not in

  1386. vain.

  1387. Let me pray

  1388. and maybe

  1389. let's just

  1390. take a moment

  1391. just before we

  1392. sing and close

  1393. our time

  1394. together.

  1395. Friends why

  1396. don't we

  1397. take a moment

  1398. just to be

  1399. silent.

  1400. For some

  1401. of us this

  1402. will be maybe

  1403. the first time

  1404. we've heard

  1405. this stuff.

  1406. Maybe we've

  1407. never thought

  1408. about Jesus

  1409. before.

  1410. For all of

  1411. us as

  1412. others of

  1413. us.

  1414. Friends I

  1415. know that

  1416. we're going

  1417. through some

  1418. serious stuff

  1419. and maybe

  1420. I pray that

  1421. God's spirit

  1422. will be

  1423. bringing a

  1424. fresh

  1425. knowledge

  1426. knowledge

  1427. of what

  1428. he has

  1429. achieved

  1430. through his

  1431. son for us

  1432. on the cross

  1433. to our

  1434. hearts right

  1435. now.

  1436. And so

  1437. glorious God

  1438. on this

  1439. wonderful

  1440. Easter Sunday

  1441. we celebrate

  1442. the resurrection

  1443. of your

  1444. son.

  1445. And in the

  1446. same way

  1447. that the

  1448. sun rises

  1449. may the

  1450. light of

  1451. his victory

  1452. over death

  1453. shine into

  1454. our hearts.

  1455. Would you

  1456. fill us

  1457. this morning

  1458. with joy

  1459. and gratitude

  1460. gratitude

  1461. and may

  1462. we leave

  1463. here today

  1464. buoyed

  1465. by the

  1466. hope

  1467. and the

  1468. new life

  1469. that is

  1470. found in

  1471. him

  1472. who walked

  1473. out of

  1474. that tomb

  1475. having

  1476. declared

  1477. on the

  1478. cross

  1479. that it

  1480. is

  1481. finished.

  1482. Father we

  1483. thank you

  1484. for your

  1485. love for

  1486. us this

  1487. day.

  1488. We thank

  1489. you that

  1490. we have a

  1491. saviour

  1492. who is not

  1493. dead

  1494. but is

  1495. alive.

  1496. Lord would

  1497. you lift

  1498. the eyes

  1499. of our

  1500. hearts

  1501. to him

  1502. today

  1503. and this

  1504. is our

  1505. prayer

  1506. in his

  1507. wonderful

  1508. and in

  1509. his strong

  1510. name we

  1511. pray.

  1512. Amen.
