  1. Okay, well, good morning, everyone. Lovely to see you here today. Please can I invite you to grab a Bible and absolutely use the contents page to find this book of the Bible called The Song of Songs.

  2. I would say it's just after Ecclesiastes, but that might actually cause more confusion than help. So contents page, The Book of the Song of Songs is where we're going to be over the next six weeks, getting into this wonderful book of the Bible together.

  3. I don't think we've ever preached here in my time at Brunsfield. So really excited to get into it today.

  4. Today, we're going to read chapter one and the first little bit of chapter two in about 15 minutes time. So just in case you think I've lost the plot, that's the plan.

  5. So please do keep it open in front of you. I thought it'd be helpful to try and get our bearings in this portion of God's words today.

  6. And with that in mind, let me confess what Alex and I watch when we're tired and we just want to watch some mindless TV at the end of the day.

  7. You know, we've all got our kind of go-to programs. Maybe it's the Beach Grove Garden. Maybe it's Full Contact Six Nations on Netflix.

  8. Well, for us, it's Friends. And you can judge me on that if you want. I'm okay.

  9. We're watching Friends recently and there's a scene that came up where Joey and Monica are talking about how easy it is to move on after a breakup.

  10. And this is Peak 90s TV. I grew up on this stuff. Joey says this,

  11. It's never taken me more than a week to get over a relationship.

  12. To which Monica replies,

  13. It's never taken you more than a shower to get over a relationship.

  14. Peak 90s, friends.

  15. Let me summarize Joey Tribbiani's attitude to women.

  16. As long as it's consensual and no one gets hurt, then it's game on.

  17. And if it ever gets costly and you don't fancy the hassle, then move on.

  18. It's the best way to live your life.

  19. Not the kind of greeting you want in your Valentine's Day card, is it?

  20. When that day rolls around in February.

  21. But it is what the sexual evolution of the last few decades promised us.

  22. More sex, better sex, and more fulfilled people.

  23. And we've got to ask the question, a couple of decades on,

  24. Has this revolution worked?

  25. Has the revolution as it threw off the old sex reserved for marriage fetters of previous generations,

  26. has it worked?

  27. Well, it's interesting you've got people around today,

  28. non-Christians feeding into this discussion,

  29. who are telling us that it hasn't.

  30. So here, for example, is non-Christian sociologist Jean Twenge,

  31. in her book Generations,

  32. which is well worth a read as she tracks the differences in the generations.

  33. And it's a fascinating read.

  34. Here's what she says.

  35. Gen Z adults should be having the time of their life sexually.

  36. But they aren't.

  37. In fact, Gen Z is having markedly less sex than Gen Xers and Millennials did as young adults.

  38. Maybe you've heard of the sex recession.

  39. For Gen Z, it's a sex depression.

  40. Interesting.

  41. Or here's American non-Christian author Louise Perry,

  42. in her book The Case Against the Sexual Revolution.

  43. She writes this.

  44. I don't believe the last 60 years or so should be understood as a period of exclusive progress or exclusive decline.

  45. Because the sexual revolution has not freed all of us,

  46. but it has freed some of us,

  47. and selectively,

  48. and at a price.

  49. And if you read her book,

  50. here's what she observes.

  51. Who are the people in our world,

  52. down in the generations,

  53. who've benefited from the sexual revolution

  54. and what it promised?

  55. The rich,

  56. those with power,

  57. and those who are famous.

  58. Now, worth clocking that for where we're going to go in about 15 minutes' time.

  59. Friends, here's two observations for you this morning.

  60. However you come to church,

  61. whenever you think about the God of the Bible,

  62. whatever you find yourself doing in life,

  63. here's two observations.

  64. Number one,

  65. the sexual ethic of our generation isn't delivering.

  66. And number two,

  67. what God has to say is worth hearing.

  68. Because God has something to say into this whole arena of sex, romance, and relationships.

  69. And maybe for you here today,

  70. that is brand new.

  71. You thought,

  72. I didn't think God had anything to say into that whole subject.

  73. Friends, I love that you're here,

  74. if that's what you're thinking today.

  75. Love that you're here.

  76. And I'd love for you,

  77. with patience and grace,

  78. to journey with us as a church

  79. as we explore what God has to say into this whole arena.

  80. Have you ever considered,

  81. dear friend,

  82. that there is more to the heart of Christianity

  83. than maybe you've got in your mind at present?

  84. Have you ever considered that those longings that you have to be loved and to be known,

  85. and why they seem to be so elusive,

  86. is because you're looking for it in all the wrong places.

  87. Have you ever considered that the purpose of our existence,

  88. the reason that we are created with desires,

  89. is that so we'd have our breath taken away

  90. by a different kind of love from the God of the universe.

  91. Come and journey with this in this book.

  92. Because here is an eight chapter love drama

  93. that celebrates the love and sexual intimacy

  94. that is enjoyed in an exclusive relationship

  95. between a man and a woman.

  96. Now get this,

  97. this is a song that was considered so racy and suggestive

  98. that apparently Jewish men were not allowed to read it publicly

  99. in the synagogue until they were 30.

  100. Welcome to the Song of Songs,

  101. which is a Hebrew superlative,

  102. basically saying this is the best song ever.

  103. And the Song of Songs,

  104. along with the Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and Proverbs,

  105. this is part of the wisdom section of our Bible.

  106. I think it's probably one of the least understood

  107. and tapped into portions of the Bible.

  108. And it's wonderful.

  109. The wisdom section of our Bibles

  110. have all sorts of things to say into our everyday realities.

  111. Wisdom literature,

  112. this is all about how to live God's way

  113. in God's world for our good.

  114. Say it again.

  115. How to live in God's way

  116. in God's world

  117. for our good.

  118. Isn't it amazing that God would speak into this?

  119. Friends, God has things to say

  120. into every aspect of our life.

  121. And he has things to say

  122. into the deepest parts of our lives.

  123. Do you know why?

  124. Because he made all of life.

  125. And that means we always need to be asking ourselves

  126. when we're in this portion of our Bibles

  127. is how is this teaching us to be wise?

  128. What is there here for me to learn?

  129. What am I supposed to be understanding

  130. about sex and relationships?

  131. And what we're going to get in the Song of Songs

  132. is the great debunking of two great lies

  133. which we often believe about sex.

  134. Here's the first one.

  135. I'm sorry I didn't quite line up in the PowerPoint.

  136. The first one is a lie

  137. that we too easily assume in the church

  138. and it's this,

  139. that we can't talk about it.

  140. And the Song of Songs would come along,

  141. burst that bubble and say not true.

  142. I think because we often don't talk about it,

  143. what we've often done as the church

  144. is that we've passed on to the next generation

  145. a bunch of sexual morals

  146. at the expense of the accompanying story

  147. which undergirds it

  148. and which people can understand it.

  149. And because we've not passed on that story,

  150. we've just passed on morals.

  151. No wonder people, friends,

  152. look in the world and think

  153. they're having so much more fun than we are.

  154. As far as the origin of human sexual desires

  155. is concerned,

  156. can we just put it out there

  157. that this was God's move?

  158. Right?

  159. It's not like Adam and Eve got together

  160. at the beginning of the Bible

  161. and God happened to walk along

  162. and catch them in the act

  163. and said to himself,

  164. how on earth did they figure that out?

  165. No, being naked and not ashamed,

  166. man and woman delighting to become one flesh

  167. as they come together

  168. was God's idea, not humanity's.

  169. And that's to say right up top

  170. that God is for sex.

  171. God put those desires in human beings.

  172. Yes, for us to enjoy,

  173. but we're going to see as we go on

  174. ultimately as a signpost for us to see

  175. that it points to something deeper.

  176. And here's the second line

  177. and it's one that we too easily accept

  178. from our culture

  179. and it's namely this.

  180. Feelings are king.

  181. Either sex is nothing,

  182. but Joey Tribbiani is treated as cheap.

  183. It is the,

  184. what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas

  185. or as Tina Turner sang,

  186. if you're around in this generation,

  187. what's love got to do with it?

  188. Lyrics as shallow as they are catchy,

  189. it's physical only logical.

  190. You must try to ignore

  191. that it means more than that.

  192. So sex is cheap,

  193. sex is nothing,

  194. or we go the other extreme

  195. and sex is everything.

  196. We're going to think about this more next week,

  197. that you've got to find the one.

  198. And if you don't find the one,

  199. then you're missing out.

  200. And what we've got to see

  201. is that this is the drumbeat of the world.

  202. It's the narrative

  203. that we're consistently being sold

  204. when it comes to sex and romance.

  205. And again,

  206. the Song of Songs would come along,

  207. burst the bubble and say,

  208. not true.

  209. And that's why,

  210. to quote my friend Tom,

  211. down in Bath,

  212. what this series is all about

  213. is turning down

  214. the volume of the world's song

  215. and turning up the volume

  216. of the Song of Songs.

  217. Let me just go pastoral

  218. just for a minute.

  219. Because maybe you're thinking,

  220. honestly,

  221. the last thing that I need right now

  222. is a love song.

  223. If I wanted that,

  224. I'd just tune into Radio 2

  225. on a Sunday morning,

  226. listen to Michael Ball,

  227. does it way better than we do.

  228. Because then at least

  229. I could turn it off.

  230. Maybe for you,

  231. even contemplating this stuff,

  232. it just brings back

  233. memories and feelings

  234. of regret and mistakes.

  235. Or maybe it's pain

  236. because it reminds you

  237. of someone

  238. who you once shared

  239. that level of

  240. human and sexual intimacy with

  241. and you miss them

  242. more than words

  243. they can convey.

  244. Or maybe it's resentment

  245. because you'd love

  246. to be married,

  247. but for whatever reason

  248. it just

  249. hasn't happened

  250. for you.

  251. Hear me say,

  252. however this lands

  253. on you today,

  254. two things.

  255. Number one,

  256. that it's okay,

  257. in fact,

  258. it's more than okay

  259. to find it difficult.

  260. And part of being

  261. a church family together

  262. is carrying

  263. each other's burdens.

  264. the happiness

  265. and the heartache.

  266. God has put us

  267. in each other's lives

  268. so that we can walk

  269. with each other

  270. through the joys

  271. and the sorrows

  272. that come our way.

  273. But here's thing number two.

  274. Friends,

  275. to some extent,

  276. we are all wounded

  277. in this area.

  278. And we all need

  279. the healing

  280. perspective

  281. and hope

  282. which is found

  283. in the Song of Songs

  284. because this song

  285. is one

  286. massive signpost

  287. to the beauty

  288. of Jesus.

  289. And my prayer

  290. for this

  291. series

  292. series

  293. is we

  294. contemplate

  295. his person

  296. and his character

  297. is that we would

  298. feel the intensity

  299. of his love

  300. towards us.

  301. How often in life

  302. it feels like

  303. no human words

  304. can really

  305. heal

  306. and help

  307. when we are

  308. wounded

  309. and hurt

  310. in this area.

  311. But his words

  312. can.

  313. And I pray

  314. that they will.

  315. Now listen,

  316. some of your Bibles

  317. might say

  318. Song of Solomon.

  319. Maybe just worth

  320. asking at this point

  321. who's this guy

  322. Solomon.

  323. Well Solomon

  324. is the son

  325. of King David

  326. and Solomon

  327. in the Bible

  328. becomes synonymous

  329. with two things.

  330. Two W's

  331. if you like.

  332. Here they are.

  333. Number one

  334. is wisdom.

  335. So he comes

  336. to personify

  337. wisdom

  338. through

  339. the Bible.

  340. It's the gift

  341. that God

  342. gave him.

  343. But here's

  344. number two.

  345. It's woman.

  346. And I love

  347. that the Bible

  348. gives us that

  349. warts and all.

  350. His downfall

  351. is his love

  352. of sex

  353. and of women.

  354. In fact,

  355. the Bible

  356. would tell us

  357. that this guy

  358. had a thousand

  359. sexual partners.

  360. Women are tools

  361. to be used

  362. to satisfy

  363. his sexual desires.

  364. Think back

  365. to that quote

  366. a few minutes ago

  367. in Solomon's world

  368. who has benefited

  369. from the sexual

  370. ethic of his

  371. day.

  372. He has.

  373. Why?

  374. Because he is rich,

  375. he is powerful,

  376. and he is famous.

  377. And all that means

  378. that unless he had

  379. a complete change

  380. of heart,

  381. I think he is

  382. unlikely to be

  383. the author of

  384. this song

  385. because this is

  386. all about sexual

  387. enjoyment in a

  388. one man,

  389. one woman marriage

  390. context,

  391. and that wasn't

  392. really his game.

  393. So what is

  394. perhaps likely

  395. going on here

  396. is that the person

  397. who wrote this

  398. is putting words

  399. in Solomon's mouth

  400. as it were

  401. as he symbolizes

  402. and personifies

  403. wisdom as if to say

  404. this is how

  405. true wisdom

  406. speaks and operates

  407. when it comes

  408. to sex

  409. and relationships.

  410. And here's what

  411. we're going to see.

  412. God's heart

  413. for this,

  414. his blueprint

  415. is that this is

  416. not about

  417. self-serving.

  418. No, wisdom

  419. for sex

  420. and relationships

  421. is man and woman

  422. made equal

  423. in dignity

  424. and worth

  425. in the image

  426. of God,

  427. participating

  428. in a relationship

  429. of radical

  430. self-giving.

  431. And this goes

  432. right against

  433. the grain

  434. of that day

  435. and it goes

  436. right against

  437. the grain of this day

  438. just in different ways.

  439. But here's what

  440. I want you to see.

  441. Notice,

  442. come with me to the text.

  443. We're going to get there.

  444. Notice who gets

  445. the microphone

  446. first in this song.

  447. Have a look at it.

  448. Who gets the microphone

  449. first?

  450. Clue?

  451. It's not him.

  452. Do you see it?

  453. It's not him.

  454. Again,

  455. think of Solomon's world.

  456. Think of the

  457. sexual ethic

  458. of his day.

  459. Who gets the first

  460. line in this song?

  461. It's her.

  462. Hugely significant.

  463. Because she is

  464. no damsel in distress.

  465. The woman in this song

  466. is not some kind

  467. of Middle Eastern

  468. eye candy.

  469. She is on the front foot

  470. and she's telling us

  471. why she's singing

  472. her song.

  473. She's telling us

  474. what she's found

  475. in her man

  476. and her man's

  477. going to tell us

  478. what he has found

  479. in her.

  480. Now,

  481. we're going to get

  482. to the text.

  483. Bogdan's going to

  484. come.

  485. We need this

  486. in 30 seconds time.

  487. But here's the question

  488. I want you to ask

  489. as we walk through it.

  490. Because remember,

  491. this is a song

  492. and we hear it

  493. how we hear

  494. our modern day songs

  495. full of images,

  496. metaphors,

  497. poetry,

  498. all that kind of thing.

  499. Don't need to take

  500. everything literally

  501. because you're getting

  502. a lot of bother

  503. if you do that

  504. in this song.

  505. But you can work out

  506. what's going on

  507. as you feel

  508. the beat of this song.

  509. Right,

  510. Bogdan,

  511. here's the question.

  512. What are they

  513. trying to tell us

  514. about their love

  515. for each other

  516. in this song?

  517. Bogdan,

  518. you come and read it

  519. and then we'll get

  520. back into it

  521. together.

  522. Morning.

  523. I'm Bogdan,

  524. a member here.

  525. We're in Song of Songs 1

  526. down to 2-7.

  527. Song of Songs 1.

  528. Solomon's Song of Songs.

  529. Let him kiss me

  530. with the kisses

  531. of his mouth

  532. for your love

  533. is more delightful

  534. than wine.

  535. Pleasing is the fragrance

  536. of your perfumes.

  537. Your name is like

  538. perfume poured out.

  539. No wonder the young

  540. women love you.

  541. Take me away with you.

  542. Let us hurry.

  543. Let the king bring me

  544. into his chambers.

  545. We rejoice in the delight

  546. of you.

  547. We praise your love

  548. more than wine.

  549. How right they are

  550. to adore you.

  551. Dark am I,

  552. yet lovely.

  553. Daughters of Jerusalem.

  554. Dark like the tents

  555. of Kedar,

  556. like the tent curtains

  557. of Solomon.

  558. Do not stare at me

  559. because I am dark,

  560. because I am darkened

  561. by the sun.

  562. My mother's sons

  563. were angry with me

  564. and made me take care

  565. of their vineyards,

  566. my own vineyard

  567. that I had to neglect.

  568. Tell me,

  569. you whom I love,

  570. where you gaze

  571. your flock

  572. and where you rest

  573. your sheep at midday.

  574. Why should I be like

  575. a veiled woman

  576. besides the flock

  577. of your friends?

  578. If you do not know

  579. a most beautiful woman,

  580. follow the tracks

  581. of the sheep

  582. and graze your young goats

  583. by the tent

  584. of the shepherds.

  585. I liken you,

  586. my darling,

  587. to a mare

  588. among Therese chariot horses.

  589. Your cheeks

  590. are beautiful

  591. with earrings,

  592. your neck

  593. with strings of jewels.

  594. We will make you

  595. earrings of gold

  596. studded with silver.

  597. While the king

  598. was at his table,

  599. my perfume

  600. spread its fragrance.

  601. My beloved is to me

  602. a statue of mare

  603. resting between my breasts.

  604. My beloved is to me

  605. a cluster of henna blossoms

  606. from the vineyards

  607. of En Gedi.

  608. How beautiful you are,

  609. my darling.

  610. Oh, how beautiful.

  611. Your eyes are dull.

  612. How handsome you are,

  613. my beloved.

  614. Oh, how charming.

  615. And our bed is verdant.

  616. The barns of our house

  617. are chedders,

  618. our rafters are furs.

  619. I am a rose of Sharon,

  620. a lily in the valleys.

  621. Like a lily among the ferns

  622. is my darling

  623. among the young woman.

  624. Like an apple tree

  625. among the trees

  626. of the forest

  627. is my beloved

  628. among the young man.

  629. I delight to sit in the shade

  630. and its fruit is sweet

  631. to my taste.

  632. Let him lead me

  633. to the banquet hall

  634. and let his banner

  635. over me be love.

  636. Strengthen me with raisins,

  637. refreshing me with apples,

  638. for I am faint with love.

  639. His left arm is under my head

  640. and his right arm embraces me.

  641. Daughters of Jerusalem,

  642. I charge you

  643. by the gazelles

  644. and by the dogs

  645. of the fields

  646. to not arouse

  647. or awaken love

  648. until it so desires.

  649. This is God's word.

  650. Amen.

  651. Nice.

  652. Okay.

  653. Bogdan did that

  654. without giggling.

  655. Excellent.

  656. It's brilliant.

  657. So friends,

  658. what we have here

  659. in the opening scene,

  660. remember this is a drama.

  661. So I think you can

  662. kind of make a case

  663. that there's a progression

  664. throughout this.

  665. We'll find the wedding day

  666. in a couple of weeks' time

  667. but what we have

  668. in this section

  669. is this couple

  670. kind of first

  671. meeting each other.

  672. And really her song

  673. has got two notes to it.

  674. Now track with me

  675. in the text

  676. and you'll see this.

  677. She's telling us

  678. firstly why

  679. she's fallen for him.

  680. Now notice

  681. how sensual this is.

  682. Verse 1.

  683. She enjoys his touch.

  684. She wants to be kissed

  685. by him all over.

  686. Verse 2.

  687. Guy's clearly got

  688. his old spice on.

  689. He smells great.

  690. She says the thought

  691. of being with him

  692. is better than tasting

  693. the best wine.

  694. But here's what

  695. I want you to see.

  696. What else has she

  697. fallen for

  698. about this guy?

  699. His name.

  700. Do you see it?

  701. His name.

  702. Which in the Bible

  703. is always associated

  704. with one's character.

  705. So in other words

  706. you hear this guy's name

  707. and you're thinking

  708. to yourself

  709. quality guy.

  710. He's a catch.

  711. And that's why

  712. she knows

  713. that all the girls

  714. want you.

  715. Now this guy's

  716. a shepherd.

  717. That's what he does.

  718. But to her

  719. he's like a king.

  720. That's what's going on here.

  721. He's the cream

  722. of the crop.

  723. The love bug

  724. has well and truly

  725. bitten.

  726. She is smitten.

  727. And then we get

  728. this group.

  729. Do you see them

  730. called the others?

  731. You jump in here

  732. at verse 4.

  733. The friends.

  734. They're kind of like

  735. the best friends

  736. of the woman.

  737. So this is

  738. bridesmaid material.

  739. This little group here.

  740. And all the way

  741. through the song

  742. they're kind of

  743. in the background

  744. watching this romance

  745. between this guy

  746. and this gal

  747. blossom and flourish.

  748. And they pop up

  749. throughout the book

  750. offering wisdom.

  751. Now again

  752. I guess this group

  753. are a bit like

  754. that scene in Greece.

  755. Do you know

  756. the one where

  757. all the girls

  758. gather around Sandy

  759. and tell me more

  760. tell me more.

  761. That's the kind of thing

  762. that's going on here.

  763. Right?

  764. And you've got to

  765. see this.

  766. Her happiness

  767. is their happiness.

  768. Do you see it?

  769. Her happiness

  770. is their happiness.

  771. Side note

  772. how wonderful

  773. are friends

  774. in your life

  775. like that

  776. who genuinely

  777. are happy

  778. for you

  779. when life goes well.

  780. Who don't begrudge.

  781. Who don't get jealous.

  782. Friends who genuinely

  783. want the best

  784. for you.

  785. Can I say

  786. it's a wonderful

  787. sign of maturity?

  788. Be that kind of friend.

  789. But the camera

  790. pans back to her

  791. and we get the sense

  792. that she's beginning

  793. to feel insecure

  794. about how she looks.

  795. Verse 5

  796. I am very dark.

  797. Similarly

  798. like the tents

  799. of Kedar.

  800. Kedar.

  801. Now those

  802. were tents

  803. that were notorious

  804. for being made

  805. of dark brown cowhide.

  806. So you get the imagery

  807. here of what she's saying.

  808. Now you might be thinking

  809. why is that an issue?

  810. Well to have a tan

  811. in this day

  812. isn't a sign

  813. of health and wealth

  814. like it is today.

  815. Like she's just

  816. come back from

  817. the south of Spain

  818. or something like that.

  819. Right?

  820. Her skin is tanned.

  821. Do you see it?

  822. Verse 6

  823. because her

  824. stepbrothers

  825. have made her

  826. go out

  827. and work

  828. in the farm.

  829. Do you see it?

  830. And she's tanned

  831. from all that

  832. time that she's spent

  833. working in the

  834. baking sun.

  835. And I guess

  836. her tan

  837. says to the world

  838. that if you like

  839. she is a

  840. working class

  841. kind of girl.

  842. And that's why

  843. she says

  844. my own vineyard

  845. I had to neglect.

  846. Now vineyard

  847. they're just a

  848. metaphor for her

  849. body.

  850. You get the picture?

  851. She's been working

  852. all day.

  853. Her hair's everywhere.

  854. She smells

  855. terrible.

  856. She looks sweaty.

  857. Every one of her

  858. fingernails

  859. has got dirt

  860. underneath.

  861. And what she

  862. says

  863. she looks

  864. at herself

  865. she says

  866. I am a rose

  867. of Sharon

  868. a lily

  869. of the valleys.

  870. Now we've got to

  871. work a wee bit hard

  872. to see what she's

  873. saying there.

  874. A rose of Sharon

  875. is like

  876. a common ground

  877. flower in this day.

  878. So if your garden

  879. is anything like

  880. mine right now

  881. this is like

  882. a daisy.

  883. Every single one

  884. looks the same.

  885. You couldn't tell

  886. the difference

  887. from any of them.

  888. There's nothing

  889. to see here.

  890. That's what she's

  891. saying about herself.

  892. And all that

  893. means that she's

  894. thinking to herself

  895. I don't like

  896. the way I look.

  897. Now friends

  898. how modern

  899. is that?

  900. And I was

  901. reading this week

  902. about how one

  903. of the most

  904. popular social

  905. media picture

  906. filters made

  907. popular by the

  908. likes of Kim

  909. Kardashian

  910. is this thing

  911. called Insta

  912. Baddy.

  913. And it's this

  914. filter where

  915. you can

  916. girls can puff

  917. up their lips

  918. and narrow

  919. their cheekbones.

  920. Young girls

  921. are using this

  922. all the time.

  923. And the

  924. tragedy of it

  925. is that experts

  926. have concluded

  927. about this filter

  928. that it's almost

  929. impossible to

  930. replicate

  931. in real life.

  932. In other words

  933. it is totally

  934. unnatural.

  935. natural.

  936. And I feel

  937. that in a way

  938. maybe that I

  939. wouldn't have a

  940. decade ago

  941. with four

  942. daughters,

  943. the world

  944. that they're

  945. growing up

  946. in.

  947. Friends,

  948. what are we

  949. teaching them

  950. about beauty

  951. and where

  952. it comes

  953. from?

  954. Here is a

  955. young woman

  956. feeling unworthy

  957. because she

  958. doesn't fit into

  959. social stereotypes

  960. about what beauty

  961. really is.

  962. and we need

  963. to see where

  964. she finds it.

  965. And friends,

  966. this is wonderful

  967. and if you take

  968. one thing from

  969. this today,

  970. take this.

  971. She doesn't

  972. find it from

  973. within herself.

  974. She finds it

  975. in what this

  976. man from

  977. the outside

  978. says is true

  979. about her

  980. and that he

  981. speaks it over

  982. her.

  983. And his

  984. words from

  985. the outside

  986. into her

  987. life totally

  988. transform the

  989. game.

  990. Again,

  991. we're going to

  992. park that

  993. thought from

  994. where we

  995. finish at the

  996. end.

  997. Because is

  998. she unworthy?

  999. What does

  1000. this guy think

  1001. about her?

  1002. Is he going

  1003. to run a

  1004. mile when he

  1005. really sees

  1006. who she is?

  1007. See him

  1008. respond at

  1009. verse 8.

  1010. And see

  1011. how his

  1012. words

  1013. transform

  1014. her.

  1015. What does

  1016. he say?

  1017. Oh,

  1018. most beautiful

  1019. among women.

  1020. What's he

  1021. saying?

  1022. The feeling

  1023. is mutual.

  1024. What does

  1025. he say?

  1026. I love

  1027. this.

  1028. I compare

  1029. you,

  1030. my love,

  1031. not to a

  1032. summer's

  1033. day.

  1034. He says,

  1035. I compare

  1036. you to a

  1037. mare among

  1038. Pharaoh's

  1039. chariots.

  1040. Now,

  1041. given you're

  1042. like a

  1043. horse,

  1044. there's not

  1045. a chat up

  1046. line,

  1047. guys,

  1048. that we

  1049. should be

  1050. using

  1051. anytime

  1052. soon.

  1053. But when

  1054. you consider

  1055. that Pharaoh's

  1056. chariots,

  1057. this is the

  1058. king's

  1059. horses.

  1060. Now,

  1061. if you

  1062. remember

  1063. that

  1064. Aladdin

  1065. street

  1066. parade,

  1067. you can

  1068. tell what

  1069. life stage

  1070. I'm at,

  1071. okay?

  1072. You understand

  1073. that the

  1074. horses,

  1075. the king's

  1076. horses are

  1077. going to be

  1078. dressed in

  1079. fine linen,

  1080. adorned in

  1081. jewels.

  1082. That's what

  1083. she's saying.

  1084. You're the

  1085. best.

  1086. Verse 15,

  1087. you are

  1088. beautiful,

  1089. my love.

  1090. How beautiful,

  1091. you ask?

  1092. Well,

  1093. chapter 2,

  1094. verse 2,

  1095. you are

  1096. like a

  1097. lily among

  1098. brambles.

  1099. Again,

  1100. going to

  1101. work hard.

  1102. Lily among

  1103. brambles.

  1104. What is

  1105. he saying?

  1106. He's

  1107. saying all

  1108. the girls

  1109. in the

  1110. world are

  1111. black and

  1112. white and

  1113. you're the

  1114. only one

  1115. in color.

  1116. That's what

  1117. he's saying.

  1118. He's got

  1119. eyes for

  1120. her alone.

  1121. And see

  1122. secondly then,

  1123. her tell us

  1124. then in light

  1125. of his

  1126. words to

  1127. her,

  1128. how she

  1129. feels when

  1130. she's with

  1131. him.

  1132. Verse 3

  1133. of chapter

  1134. 2,

  1135. what great

  1136. delight as

  1137. I sat

  1138. in his

  1139. shadow.

  1140. Get this,

  1141. his banner

  1142. over me

  1143. was love.

  1144. So she's

  1145. telling everyone

  1146. who'll listen

  1147. that when

  1148. she's in the

  1149. presence of

  1150. her man,

  1151. she finds

  1152. life,

  1153. she finds

  1154. acceptance,

  1155. she finds

  1156. love,

  1157. and she

  1158. finds security.

  1159. love.

  1160. She's

  1161. with her

  1162. man.

  1163. That's the

  1164. kind of

  1165. love she

  1166. feels when

  1167. she's with

  1168. her man.

  1169. And that's

  1170. why she

  1171. turns to

  1172. her friends,

  1173. these daughters

  1174. of Jerusalem,

  1175. again verse

  1176. seven,

  1177. and she

  1178. says,

  1179. nothing compares

  1180. to this.

  1181. Nothing

  1182. compares to

  1183. this.

  1184. And then

  1185. comes the

  1186. refrain,

  1187. one that

  1188. we're going

  1189. to hear

  1190. repeated often

  1191. throughout

  1192. this letter.

  1193. It's going

  1194. to come

  1195. up three

  1196. times at

  1197. key points

  1198. throughout.

  1199. Her

  1200. advice to

  1201. her friends

  1202. is do

  1203. not stir

  1204. up or

  1205. awaken

  1206. love until

  1207. it pleases.

  1208. Or in

  1209. other words,

  1210. until the

  1211. time is

  1212. right.

  1213. And you

  1214. better believe

  1215. in a few

  1216. chapters time,

  1217. she is going

  1218. to tell us

  1219. when the

  1220. time is

  1221. right.

  1222. And I'm

  1223. away that

  1224. weekend,

  1225. and I've

  1226. given it to

  1227. JT,

  1228. and he'll

  1229. do a

  1230. wonderful

  1231. job of

  1232. that.

  1233. But here

  1234. is what

  1235. she's

  1236. saying.

  1237. You're

  1238. not going

  1239. to find

  1240. a love

  1241. like this

  1242. in a

  1243. one-night

  1244. stand.

  1245. It's

  1246. too precious

  1247. just to

  1248. give away

  1249. to somebody

  1250. who may

  1251. or may

  1252. not be

  1253. there the

  1254. day after.

  1255. No,

  1256. to experience

  1257. it,

  1258. she's saying

  1259. to her

  1260. friends,

  1261. with a

  1262. person who

  1263. has committed

  1264. themselves,

  1265. body and

  1266. soul to

  1267. you,

  1268. we'll think

  1269. about more

  1270. about that

  1271. next week,

  1272. and isn't

  1273. just in

  1274. it for

  1275. you on

  1276. your

  1277. Instagrammable

  1278. best days,

  1279. but will

  1280. still be

  1281. there loving

  1282. you,

  1283. holding you on

  1284. your worst

  1285. days.

  1286. That's the

  1287. right time.

  1288. Friends,

  1289. the sexual

  1290. intimacy of

  1291. this song,

  1292. it's intimacy

  1293. in the

  1294. context of

  1295. commitment.

  1296. And so,

  1297. two questions

  1298. this text

  1299. asks us

  1300. to think

  1301. about when

  1302. it comes

  1303. to the

  1304. whole area

  1305. of sex

  1306. and romance.

  1307. Here they

  1308. are.

  1309. Number one,

  1310. friends,

  1311. are we

  1312. looking for

  1313. the right

  1314. things?

  1315. The wisdom

  1316. here,

  1317. particularly

  1318. for those

  1319. of us

  1320. who aren't

  1321. married,

  1322. but are

  1323. looking into

  1324. this whole

  1325. area of

  1326. relationships,

  1327. is to

  1328. base those

  1329. decisions on

  1330. more than

  1331. just how

  1332. someone looks.

  1333. Are you

  1334. looking for

  1335. someone who

  1336. has a name,

  1337. their

  1338. character,

  1339. and in

  1340. particular,

  1341. do they

  1342. love Jesus?

  1343. Do they

  1344. love him?

  1345. Do they

  1346. seek to

  1347. follow him?

  1348. And as

  1349. they follow

  1350. him,

  1351. are they

  1352. going to

  1353. love you

  1354. like he

  1355. loves you?

  1356. And would

  1357. you strive

  1358. to be

  1359. someone of

  1360. whom others

  1361. look at

  1362. and conclude,

  1363. what a

  1364. name.

  1365. And for

  1366. those of us

  1367. who are

  1368. married,

  1369. let this

  1370. remind us

  1371. of the

  1372. power of

  1373. words.

  1374. As we

  1375. watch this

  1376. young couple

  1377. shower each

  1378. other with

  1379. compliments,

  1380. the challenge

  1381. is not

  1382. to lose

  1383. that sense

  1384. of appreciation

  1385. and affection

  1386. for your

  1387. spouse.

  1388. You know,

  1389. what attracted

  1390. you to your

  1391. spouse in

  1392. the first

  1393. place?

  1394. When was

  1395. the last

  1396. time you

  1397. held hands

  1398. in public?

  1399. What do

  1400. you notice

  1401. about them

  1402. today that

  1403. you can

  1404. compliment

  1405. them on,

  1406. particularly

  1407. when it

  1408. comes to

  1409. their

  1410. character?

  1411. Where are

  1412. they growing

  1413. in

  1414. godliness?

  1415. This says

  1416. to us,

  1417. don't let

  1418. the fire

  1419. of romance

  1420. go out

  1421. if it's

  1422. in your

  1423. power to

  1424. do something

  1425. about it.

  1426. So,

  1427. friends,

  1428. are we

  1429. looking for

  1430. the right

  1431. things?

  1432. And here's

  1433. the second

  1434. thing.

  1435. Are we

  1436. listening to

  1437. the right

  1438. words?

  1439. Because

  1440. maybe you

  1441. hear the

  1442. words of

  1443. verse 15.

  1444. Behold,

  1445. you are

  1446. beautiful,

  1447. my love.

  1448. And you

  1449. long that

  1450. someone would

  1451. say that

  1452. about you.

  1453. And this

  1454. is where

  1455. we're going

  1456. to close

  1457. this first

  1458. section this

  1459. morning.

  1460. We're going

  1461. to pick up

  1462. so many

  1463. more of

  1464. these themes

  1465. as we

  1466. go.

  1467. But I

  1468. just want

  1469. to finish

  1470. here.

  1471. You know,

  1472. maybe you're

  1473. of this

  1474. generation

  1475. who you

  1476. played this

  1477. game where

  1478. you picked

  1479. up a

  1480. daisy and

  1481. you did

  1482. this whole

  1483. thing,

  1484. you pulled

  1485. off the

  1486. petals one

  1487. by one.

  1488. Remember

  1489. that line?

  1490. He loves

  1491. me,

  1492. he loves

  1493. me not,

  1494. he loves

  1495. me,

  1496. he loves

  1497. me not.

  1498. Which way

  1499. is it

  1500. going to

  1501. go?

  1502. Strikes

  1503. me that

  1504. that is

  1505. where this

  1506. woman is

  1507. at the

  1508. start of

  1509. this song.

  1510. I'm not

  1511. sure he

  1512. does.

  1513. Friends,

  1514. the good

  1515. news for

  1516. you today

  1517. as we

  1518. think about

  1519. the broader

  1520. purpose of

  1521. this song

  1522. and where

  1523. it points

  1524. us,

  1525. is that if

  1526. your faith

  1527. is in

  1528. Jesus,

  1529. there is

  1530. someone who

  1531. says it

  1532. over you

  1533. and delights

  1534. to say it

  1535. over you.

  1536. He says,

  1537. you are

  1538. beautiful,

  1539. my love,

  1540. and his

  1541. name is

  1542. Jesus.

  1543. And let's

  1544. allow that

  1545. to bring us

  1546. wonderful

  1547. assurance

  1548. today.

  1549. No matter

  1550. what your

  1551. marital status,

  1552. your romantic

  1553. relationships,

  1554. wherever you're

  1555. at,

  1556. friends,

  1557. this is the

  1558. voice that

  1559. matters.

  1560. And this

  1561. is the

  1562. voice that

  1563. we need

  1564. to allow

  1565. to transform

  1566. us.

  1567. And the

  1568. wonderful thing

  1569. is the

  1570. gospel says

  1571. it's not

  1572. token.

  1573. The wonder

  1574. of the

  1575. gospel is

  1576. that Jesus

  1577. loved us

  1578. even when

  1579. we were

  1580. his enemies.

  1581. He loved

  1582. us when we

  1583. were dead

  1584. in our

  1585. transgressions

  1586. and sins.

  1587. So it's not

  1588. like we made

  1589. the first

  1590. move.

  1591. The

  1592. gospel says

  1593. the

  1594. initiative

  1595. was all

  1596. his.

  1597. A

  1598. father that

  1599. existed,

  1600. father,

  1601. son,

  1602. spirit,

  1603. the father

  1604. sends the

  1605. son,

  1606. the son

  1607. takes human

  1608. flesh,

  1609. the son

  1610. came for

  1611. us,

  1612. he lived

  1613. for us,

  1614. he died

  1615. for us,

  1616. and if your

  1617. faith is in

  1618. him today,

  1619. you can

  1620. know on

  1621. your best

  1622. day and

  1623. on your

  1624. worst day

  1625. that he

  1626. loves you,

  1627. he has

  1628. taken

  1629. all your

  1630. shame,

  1631. and all

  1632. our mistakes,

  1633. and all

  1634. our regrets,

  1635. and all

  1636. our guilt,

  1637. he has

  1638. taken it

  1639. away through

  1640. his work

  1641. on the

  1642. cross.

  1643. And at

  1644. the time

  1645. he united

  1646. us to

  1647. himself and

  1648. he clothed

  1649. us with

  1650. his beauty.

  1651. And that's

  1652. why he says

  1653. to us on

  1654. our best

  1655. days and

  1656. on our

  1657. worst days,

  1658. you are

  1659. beautiful,

  1660. my love.

  1661. Oh,

  1662. friends,

  1663. let us be

  1664. reminded of

  1665. our Savior

  1666. and his

  1667. stunning and

  1668. his surprising

  1669. love for

  1670. us.

  1671. Don't ever

  1672. doubt it.

  1673. No matter

  1674. how you're

  1675. feeling,

  1676. no matter

  1677. what season

  1678. of life

  1679. that you're

  1680. in,

  1681. do not

  1682. doubt his

  1683. love and

  1684. his commitment

  1685. to us.

  1686. And the

  1687. thing is,

  1688. Christ loves

  1689. us and

  1690. he longs

  1691. through the

  1692. circumstances

  1693. of our

  1694. lives to

  1695. teach us

  1696. and to

  1697. birth in

  1698. us that

  1699. same love

  1700. for him

  1701. in return.

  1702. You know,

  1703. we all feel

  1704. that love is,

  1705. as you two

  1706. sang,

  1707. the sweetest

  1708. thing.

  1709. but with

  1710. Jesus,

  1711. we can

  1712. know why.

  1713. Because his

  1714. love for

  1715. us is the

  1716. story of

  1717. the cosmos.

  1718. Can I just

  1719. plug, just

  1720. before we

  1721. pray and

  1722. finish,

  1723. we've got

  1724. tons of

  1725. these books

  1726. at the

  1727. back to

  1728. flog,

  1729. and they're

  1730. free,

  1731. just take

  1732. them or

  1733. you can

  1734. give a

  1735. donation

  1736. if you

  1737. want.

  1738. They're

  1739. just

  1740. called

  1741. Surprised

  1742. by

  1743. Jesus.

  1744. Friends,

  1745. if your

  1746. affections

  1747. for him

  1748. have maybe

  1749. petered out,

  1750. maybe they're

  1751. low,

  1752. maybe you're

  1753. struggling at

  1754. the minute,

  1755. maybe you're

  1756. weary,

  1757. can I highly

  1758. suggest this

  1759. book will

  1760. help you.

  1761. Maybe

  1762. something fresh

  1763. to read

  1764. devotionally,

  1765. maybe just

  1766. something to

  1767. read this

  1768. afternoon.

  1769. It is

  1770. wonderful.

  1771. Come and

  1772. be surprised

  1773. by Jesus.

  1774. His love

  1775. for us

  1776. is the

  1777. story of

  1778. the cosmos.

  1779. Please come

  1780. back next

  1781. week,

  1782. we'll get

  1783. more into

  1784. this song,

  1785. but why

  1786. don't just

  1787. now we

  1788. pause and

  1789. let's pray

  1790. because I

  1791. realize that

  1792. we've touched

  1793. on a lot

  1794. of things

  1795. this morning

  1796. and let's

  1797. allow God

  1798. through his

  1799. Holy Spirit

  1800. to minister

  1801. to us this

  1802. morning through

  1803. his word.

  1804. And so

  1805. Father,

  1806. I am so

  1807. aware of

  1808. my inadequacy

  1809. here,

  1810. inadequacy

  1811. here.

  1812. Father,

  1813. I pray that

  1814. your spirit

  1815. would be

  1816. working in

  1817. our lives.

  1818. Lord,

  1819. even to

  1820. the deepest

  1821. of wounds,

  1822. would he

  1823. through your

  1824. word be

  1825. bringing that

  1826. healing knowledge

  1827. of who Jesus

  1828. is today.

  1829. Father,

  1830. we just want

  1831. to commit

  1832. ourselves to

  1833. you and we

  1834. ask that you

  1835. would help

  1836. raise our

  1837. eyes to

  1838. consider the

  1839. beauty and

  1840. the worth

  1841. of Jesus.

  1842. Thank you

  1843. truly that he

  1844. is the great

  1845. lover of

  1846. souls.

  1847. Father,

  1848. help us to

  1849. rest in

  1850. his wonderful

  1851. love for us,

  1852. we pray.

  1853. In Jesus'

  1854. name.

  1855. Amen.

  1856. Amen.

  1857. Amen.

  1858. Amen.

  1859. Thank you.
