  1. Okay, well, thanks so much, Aaron. Great to see everyone. My name's Graeme. I'm the pastor here. Great to welcome you this morning. This is your first Sunday with us. Maybe you're visiting. And because that's true, you may be thinking, what on earth are we reading in the Bible this morning? Consciousness for a lot of us, we're joining halfway through this series. And just to put you at ease, we don't do this every Sunday, okay?

  2. But it has been fantastic spending some time in the Song of Songs over the last couple of weeks. We're kind of at the halfway point. We've got two more to go. This portion of God's Word in the Bible that's wisdom literature. It's all about how we live in God's way, in God's world, for our good and for his glory.

  3. And this is a book that celebrates the marital and sexual love that exists between a man and a woman in a covenant relationship of marriage. And it's been fantastic just to hear how God has been at work in our lives as we've traveled through this letter together, this letter together, this book together. It's a song. It's the song of songs.

  4. So we're excited to get back into chapter five today. 17 years ago, I was an usher at a friend's wedding in Vancouver in Canada on a place called Thetis Island, which is just off the mainland.

  5. Now, I found a picture of it online. This isn't the actual wedding I went to, but it is the exact venue. Do you want to see it? You ready for this? Promise you won't get envious.

  6. Look at that. Isn't that amazing?

  7. It felt like a celebrity in a kilt over there. It's incredible. To this day, the most stunning wedding backdrop I've ever seen. The weather was everything that you'd expect from North America.

  8. Everyone was looking fabulous. There wasn't a dry eye in the house as the couple were at the front making their vows to each other.

  9. And once everybody had composed themselves and sat down, the pastor then proceeded to give his message to the couple on their wedding day.

  10. He said, Dave and Amanda, as you set out on your married life today, I want you to know straight off the bat that there's two things wrong with your marriage.

  11. And he pointed at both of them and he said, you and you.

  12. Now, let you react to that for a moment. I wonder if somebody said that on your wedding day, how you'd react.

  13. Two things wrong with this marriage, you and you.

  14. And what he perhaps lacked in reading the moment and going with the Disney-esque setting to this wedding,

  15. he more than made up for in his loving pastoral insight that he wanted to share with this couple who he'd walked with in the weeks up to their big day.

  16. Here's what he proceeded to say. He said, don't let this day in all its beauty,

  17. that's really just a decorated doorway to the rest of your lives,

  18. lull you into thinking that married life is going to be this constant stream of marital bliss.

  19. It's not always slow dancing in the kitchen to Michael Bublé.

  20. Roses don't arrive every day from Interflora.

  21. Valentine's Day does not become the new Groundhog Day when you get married.

  22. Because marriage is two sinners living side by side in a Genesis 3 world.

  23. And because that's true, you will experience times of frustration, of miscommunication,

  24. not seeing eye to eye, and your married life together will be,

  25. at times it's going to be really, really hard.

  26. Less like fire and more like fridge.

  27. There's going to be times when it's red hot.

  28. There's going to be times when it's cool.

  29. And it's hard.

  30. And that's precisely where the couple in this song are at today.

  31. They're in one of those seasons.

  32. And I really hope, just if you're thinking about tapping out at this point,

  33. let me give you two things maybe to help you tap in for the rest of this over the next 20 minutes or so.

  34. I hope this does two things for us today as a church family.

  35. Because we're all at different seasons in our lives when it comes to this stuff.

  36. And this series, as it's tracked along, has maybe spoken into different seasons of our lives.

  37. And particularly maybe today, it's speaking to those, particularly of those of us who are married.

  38. And here's the first thing I hope this does.

  39. I really hope this helps some of us come up for air.

  40. And here's what I mean by that.

  41. So often I think we feel like we have to come in these doors on a Sunday,

  42. maybe during the week, maybe your growth group, whatever it is you go to,

  43. and pretend everything is great.

  44. And that four-letter word that we always use to describe how we're doing, we're doing fine.

  45. And I hope this is permission for many of us in this room today

  46. to know that it's okay to not be okay.

  47. I always love what C.S. Lewis said about friendship.

  48. To paraphrase, he said,

  49. Friendship is born at the moment when one person says to the other person,

  50. What, you too?

  51. I thought I was the only one.

  52. And so may this passage today help us as a church family make and find friends who know what it's like.

  53. And the ultimate friend is the Lord Jesus.

  54. And this is the second thing I hope this helps us see today.

  55. It helps us see that this point's beyond married life.

  56. And it shows us, secondly, where to run for help.

  57. Right?

  58. And here's what I mean by that.

  59. If what I'm saying, if this whole less fire, more fridge,

  60. it is easy for us to do that in terms of our love for Jesus.

  61. And what this is going to do today is help us see how wonderful,

  62. how willing, how available, and how brilliant a Savior Jesus is.

  63. Ready for this?

  64. I'm going to go with that silence and go for yes.

  65. Okay?

  66. Brilliant.

  67. Come with me to the passage.

  68. Let's see how this works together.

  69. Last week, we saw this couple on their wedding day.

  70. Do you remember it?

  71. JT did a wonderful job taking us through that last section.

  72. That wedding day, a moment that ended,

  73. if you see the text, verse 1 of chapter 5.

  74. Do you see it?

  75. With their friends egging on this couple to eat, drink, and be drunk with love.

  76. And that sounds like Taylor Swift lyrics if ever I've heard them, right?

  77. Eat, drink, be drunk with love.

  78. And you could almost picture them, couldn't you?

  79. Setting off into the sunset in their car, tin cans rattling in the back.

  80. I don't know whether people still do that or not today,

  81. but with the words just married emblazoned on the back windscreen.

  82. And they're there in the car, and they're taking a selfie of themselves,

  83. the couple sharing it on Instagram.

  84. Everyone's liking it, heart emojis everywhere.

  85. And I thought to myself, wouldn't that be a great place to end the song?

  86. No.

  87. Because maybe like you, like me,

  88. I remember reading that the first time I came across it,

  89. and I'm thinking to myself, seriously?

  90. From the west of Scotland,

  91. cheese factor 100.

  92. I thought this was church, not Disney.

  93. Surely this is way more idealism than it is realism.

  94. Well, if you're like me, if that was maybe your thought when we did it last week,

  95. this today is life after the honeymoon.

  96. And picking up the song again at verse 2,

  97. to quote that 60s classic,

  98. they've lost that loving feeling.

  99. Now, what does she tell us?

  100. Come with me to the text and see it.

  101. She says,

  102. I slept, but my heart was awake.

  103. Do you see it in the text?

  104. Which I think is her way of telling us that she's had another dream.

  105. Remember she had a dream a few chapters ago?

  106. Here she is having another dream.

  107. And given this is a dream,

  108. it's quite hard to work out exactly what's going on here,

  109. but here's my best shot.

  110. I think her dream is revealing what's playing on her mind.

  111. You ever had a dream like that?

  112. Just your subconscious kind of brings stuff out in a dream,

  113. and it's really weird,

  114. but actually it's what's going on in your mind.

  115. I think that's kind of what's going on here.

  116. Her dream is revealing what's going on in her subconscious,

  117. what she's worried about.

  118. And in her case,

  119. it's revealing a tension

  120. that I think she senses in the back of her head

  121. is snowballing and developing in their relationship together.

  122. Come and see how this works.

  123. She says,

  124. In her dream,

  125. my beloved knocked.

  126. Do you see it?

  127. Which is just another way of saying

  128. he's in the mood for love.

  129. However,

  130. look at how she responds to his advances.

  131. Verse 3,

  132. he's knocking on that door.

  133. You've got to clock that knock

  134. for where we're going to finish.

  135. He's knocking on that door,

  136. and she responds,

  137. verse 3,

  138. I put off my garment.

  139. How could I put it on again?

  140. I'd bathe my feet.

  141. How could I spoil them again?

  142. Which is her way of saying,

  143. for whatever reason,

  144. I'm just not in the mood.

  145. It's too much hassle.

  146. And by verse 5,

  147. do you see by the time she does feel in the mood,

  148. and notice the three times repeated phrase,

  149. but,

  150. there at verse 6.

  151. But,

  152. but,

  153. but,

  154. her man

  155. was no longer there.

  156. And again,

  157. remember,

  158. likely still in this dream,

  159. she goes in this all-out search for him,

  160. around the city,

  161. no one's seen him.

  162. Where is he?

  163. And I think the beating that she's described

  164. as having received at verse 7,

  165. friends,

  166. I think it's a metaphor.

  167. Remember,

  168. this is a dream,

  169. that it's expressing the fact

  170. that this tension in the relationship

  171. is making her feel

  172. like the stuffing

  173. has been completely knocked out

  174. of her in life.

  175. Right?

  176. My kids love the bear factory.

  177. Have you ever been there?

  178. Princess Street,

  179. you know,

  180. it's still there.

  181. You just get these bears

  182. who are just lifeless.

  183. Right?

  184. Just all this stuffing

  185. has been taken out.

  186. That's what she's saying.

  187. She feels like life

  188. has just knocked the stuffing out of me.

  189. So,

  190. do you see what's going on?

  191. Put these two things together.

  192. He wants to spend time with her.

  193. She's not really up for it.

  194. But then she wants to spend time with him.

  195. And he's not there.

  196. Which,

  197. bring that together,

  198. means Houston,

  199. we've got a problem.

  200. And let me just pause at this moment

  201. and make two quick applications

  202. as we see this tension

  203. in their marriage.

  204. And here's number one.

  205. And it's to those of us

  206. who would maybe love to be married,

  207. but aren't.

  208. Let me,

  209. let you hear me say,

  210. friends,

  211. those desires are not wrong.

  212. But,

  213. they are misguided

  214. if,

  215. deep down,

  216. you think

  217. that getting married

  218. is going to be the answer

  219. to all your problems.

  220. I think in Christian circles

  221. in particular,

  222. we can subtly elevate marriage

  223. as the thing

  224. to which we all aspire.

  225. I think we've got to be so careful,

  226. haven't we,

  227. that we never project

  228. that idea

  229. even subconsciously

  230. in our church culture.

  231. It is not the be-all

  232. and end-all.

  233. Particularly when you think about

  234. where this is going to end

  235. this morning.

  236. It's certainly not

  237. where we find our identity.

  238. Speaking as one

  239. who is happily married,

  240. and you do the math,

  241. so there's one

  242. punching well above his weight.

  243. I remember when I got married,

  244. just discovering

  245. a whole host

  246. of different problems

  247. in my life,

  248. 90% of which

  249. was just my own sin

  250. being revealed

  251. in new ways.

  252. marriage isn't going

  253. to solve all your problems.

  254. But here's number two,

  255. speaking particularly

  256. to those of us

  257. who are married.

  258. You know,

  259. there will be seasons

  260. in married life

  261. when it's harder

  262. to find time together,

  263. right?

  264. Been there, done it.

  265. And there's all sorts

  266. of reasons

  267. why finding time

  268. to be together

  269. is going to be difficult.

  270. Maybe it's

  271. a really busy season

  272. at work.

  273. Maybe it's just

  274. night shifts galore.

  275. Maybe you're

  276. traveling a lot.

  277. Maybe it's

  278. looking after

  279. family members.

  280. It's one of those seasons.

  281. Maybe kids have come along

  282. and your energy levels

  283. are taking an absolute

  284. pounding and it's just

  285. baby brain

  286. everywhere.

  287. Different seasons

  288. come and go in life.

  289. But that said,

  290. if in our marriages

  291. we keep finding ourselves

  292. using the phrase,

  293. the one on the screen,

  294. you know the one

  295. that we always use,

  296. like ships in the night,

  297. is at least worth

  298. asking ourselves

  299. the question,

  300. is this a season

  301. or is it a pattern?

  302. And,

  303. I'm speaking from

  304. my own mistakes here,

  305. be aware that you

  306. might not see that

  307. as a problem.

  308. But it is entirely

  309. possible that your

  310. spouse might.

  311. And the encouragement

  312. here is to talk

  313. to one another.

  314. You know,

  315. we live in a world

  316. that is increasingly

  317. saying that if you're

  318. in a marriage to someone

  319. and you're no longer

  320. feeling it,

  321. it's no longer doing it

  322. for you,

  323. it's no longer

  324. scratching that itch,

  325. then it might be time

  326. to start looking

  327. elsewhere.

  328. And I think that's why

  329. that the statistics

  330. are telling us

  331. that more and more

  332. people in our world

  333. are delaying marriage

  334. or even dismissing it

  335. as a viable option

  336. entirely because

  337. why would you want

  338. to restrict yourself

  339. like that?

  340. I'm so conscious

  341. I still like to think

  342. I can kick it at 39.

  343. I'm still on my

  344. football team

  345. WhatsApp group.

  346. There are,

  347. I think,

  348. almost just short

  349. of 80 guys

  350. on that group.

  351. I'm so conscious

  352. that there are

  353. maybe three or four

  354. of us that are married

  355. in that group.

  356. And I'm certainly

  357. the only one I think

  358. with more than one kid.

  359. But it's what's going

  360. on in our world

  361. isn't it right now?

  362. Statistics will tell you

  363. that.

  364. But come to Jesus

  365. and hear him say

  366. that if you're primarily

  367. in a relationship

  368. for you

  369. and what you can get

  370. out of it

  371. rather than in it

  372. to serve the other

  373. person sacrificially

  374. then you've got it

  375. the wrong way around.

  376. We follow a saviour

  377. who calls us

  378. to die to self

  379. to take up our cross

  380. to follow him.

  381. It's not about

  382. self-serving.

  383. Remember we thought

  384. about this in week one

  385. what this book

  386. is telling us

  387. is marriage life

  388. is not about

  389. self-serving

  390. it's about radical

  391. self-giving

  392. and the promise

  393. that Jesus makes

  394. that it is there

  395. as we follow

  396. our saviour

  397. as we die to ourselves

  398. as we live

  399. to serve him

  400. and live to serve his people

  401. that that's the place

  402. that we'll find ourselves.

  403. And that's why

  404. because that's the

  405. the noise out there

  406. that is why

  407. remember we said this

  408. a few weeks ago

  409. we need to turn down

  410. the world's song

  411. and we need to turn up

  412. the voice of God

  413. as we hear it

  414. in the song of songs.

  415. Out with our affection for

  416. and our walk with Jesus

  417. is where we're going to finish.

  418. There is no more

  419. important thing

  420. than we can be

  421. giving ourselves to

  422. if we're married

  423. than investing

  424. in the health

  425. of our marriages

  426. and so this is an invitation

  427. to get proactive

  428. to get creative

  429. in stoking the fire.

  430. Here's a question for you

  431. if you are married

  432. and I ask myself

  433. that all the time

  434. because Alex's

  435. love language is time

  436. when was the last time

  437. you spent quality time together?

  438. You know we are so grateful

  439. for the many people

  440. in this church family

  441. who over the years

  442. have babysat for Alex and I

  443. and have allowed us

  444. just to go out

  445. for a meal together.

  446. You know often those meals

  447. are based around

  448. cheap it is on deals

  449. with a burger

  450. because we're British

  451. and we love a bargain

  452. but do you know what

  453. they have proved to be

  454. priceless times

  455. for our relationship

  456. and if you're here

  457. and you may be thinking

  458. actually we'd love

  459. a bit of that

  460. reach out for babysitters.

  461. I love the fact

  462. that we're in a church family

  463. where people are so willing

  464. to do that

  465. and let me just say as well

  466. if you're here

  467. and you're thinking

  468. this isn't where I'm at

  469. remember we thought

  470. about last week

  471. don't think that this

  472. doesn't affect you

  473. because a church family

  474. we're invested in each other

  475. and so if you're maybe thinking

  476. I'm not married

  477. let me just say

  478. that you have got a stake

  479. in the health

  480. of the marriages

  481. of the people

  482. that are in this church family.

  483. Thank you for those

  484. who pray for us.

  485. Because here's what

  486. I want you to see

  487. if you come with me

  488. to verse 9

  489. on that note

  490. it's the input

  491. of her friends

  492. that change the game.

  493. So don't think

  494. you've not got a role

  495. to play here

  496. if you're from the outside

  497. looking into people

  498. that are married

  499. in this church

  500. you've got such a role

  501. to play

  502. you have a stake

  503. and verse 9

  504. tells you that you do.

  505. Remember this song

  506. remember the friends

  507. who are in the background

  508. of this song

  509. here's what they say

  510. how is your beloved

  511. better than others?

  512. How most beautiful

  513. of women

  514. question mark

  515. how is your beloved

  516. better than others

  517. than you so charge us?

  518. Do you see how

  519. that's not a closed question?

  520. Do you see how

  521. it's an open question?

  522. One that invites

  523. a response.

  524. Can I paraphrase it?

  525. Tell us again

  526. why you love him.

  527. Yeah?

  528. Tell us what

  529. made you fall in love

  530. with him in the first place.

  531. And see if last week

  532. was all about him

  533. pouring out compliments

  534. on her

  535. well from verse 10

  536. she is now

  537. pouring out

  538. the compliments

  539. on him.

  540. Now

  541. see them

  542. from verse 10

  543. and remember

  544. this is a different

  545. generation

  546. from ours

  547. remember the

  548. images

  549. are very much

  550. different

  551. but go with it

  552. okay

  553. she says

  554. his heads

  555. so do you see what

  556. she says

  557. this guy's like a

  558. just for men

  559. hair dye model

  560. it is jet black

  561. his eyes

  562. his cheeks

  563. his lips

  564. so he's a just for men

  565. hair model

  566. he's a Nivea

  567. lip balm model

  568. as well

  569. do you see

  570. they are like the lilies

  571. they are red and kissable

  572. that's what she's saying

  573. his arms

  574. his body

  575. so he's clearly

  576. no stranger

  577. to the gym

  578. and just in case

  579. we're in any doubt

  580. verse 15

  581. he's not skipped

  582. leg day either

  583. do you see it

  584. but do you see

  585. what she's doing

  586. do you see what

  587. she's conveying

  588. to all those

  589. who will listen

  590. she's using

  591. poetic language

  592. and this is so

  593. important for where

  594. we're going to finish

  595. poetic language

  596. to describe

  597. the strength

  598. the stability

  599. the majesty

  600. and the beauty

  601. of the man

  602. who's captured

  603. my heart

  604. but see what

  605. she also says

  606. and I love this

  607. what else

  608. is he

  609. to her

  610. verse 16

  611. do you see it

  612. my beloved

  613. and

  614. my friend

  615. and so here's the thing

  616. as much as David Hasselhoff

  617. as this guy

  618. might like to be

  619. all that stuff's

  620. going to fade

  621. it's true in life

  622. isn't it

  623. all our looks

  624. are going to fade

  625. they're going to go

  626. turn 40 on Tuesday

  627. I'm so aware of it

  628. getting old

  629. but do you know what

  630. friendship

  631. won't

  632. and so her friends

  633. ask her again

  634. at chapter 6

  635. where is he

  636. and I think we're

  637. meant to understand

  638. at this point

  639. from

  640. chapter 6

  641. she awakens

  642. from her dream

  643. remember she's been

  644. in a dream

  645. she can't find him

  646. she's panicking

  647. she awakens from her dream

  648. and her man's been there

  649. the whole time

  650. and then we get that

  651. repeated refrain

  652. verse 3

  653. I am his

  654. and my beloved

  655. is mine

  656. and we're meant to

  657. understand that there's

  658. a glorious

  659. reunion here

  660. they are back together

  661. and they're looking

  662. each other in the eye

  663. and so as we

  664. see their union

  665. together just at the

  666. end here

  667. this passage

  668. invites all of us

  669. married or not

  670. however you would

  671. describe yourself

  672. today

  673. to something

  674. way

  675. bigger

  676. and so let me

  677. take you to the

  678. only place in the

  679. New Testament

  680. I think you can

  681. make a case

  682. that the Song of Songs

  683. is alluded to

  684. and we find it

  685. in

  686. Revelation

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  687. chapter 3

  688. and what's going on

  689. there

  690. Revelation chapter 3

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  691. Jesus speaking

  692. to the church

  693. these seven churches

  694. he's speaking

  695. to the church

  696. in Laodicea

  697. and in this church

  698. in Laodicea

  699. it is full of people

  700. who were once on

  701. fire for Jesus

  702. right

  703. all they wanted to

  704. talk about

  705. was Jesus

  706. but now

  707. with the passing

  708. of time

  709. they've just kind of

  710. settled

  711. for this

  712. cold

  713. orthodoxy

  714. orthodoxy

  715. Jesus is

  716. oh they still

  717. like him

  718. but he's kind of

  719. just this

  720. weekend hobby

  721. that is kind of

  722. the veneer

  723. on this

  724. religious

  725. looking life

  726. that's like

  727. one of those

  728. chocolate Easter eggs

  729. that just looks

  730. great on the outside

  731. but it's hollow

  732. on the inside

  733. their spiritual

  734. life's airplane

  735. mode is well

  736. and truly on

  737. not all that

  738. fussed with

  739. Jesus

  740. remember back

  741. to where we

  742. started

  743. once fire

  744. now fridge

  745. yeah

  746. and to rouse

  747. them

  748. from their

  749. spiritual

  750. sleepiness

  751. Jesus says

  752. do you know

  753. how you taste

  754. to me

  755. lukewarm

  756. can you taste

  757. it

  758. lukewarm

  759. you know

  760. I love

  761. two types

  762. of coffee

  763. I love

  764. frappuccinos

  765. cold

  766. really cold

  767. incredible

  768. the other

  769. type of coffee

  770. boiling hot

  771. latte

  772. really really hot

  773. but you know

  774. what's the worst

  775. taste ever

  776. so you've got

  777. a really hot

  778. coffee

  779. and you've just

  780. forgotten about it

  781. for half an hour

  782. and then you

  783. quickly take a sip

  784. and bleh

  785. disgusting

  786. it's the same

  787. with the

  788. frappuccino

  789. when you've left

  790. it for half an hour

  791. and it's kind of

  792. warmed up a little

  793. bit

  794. bleh

  795. that's what

  796. Jesus is saying

  797. can you taste it

  798. you're neither

  799. hot nor cold

  800. and maybe you're

  801. asking yourself

  802. how do I know

  803. if I'm lukewarm

  804. and I've asked

  805. myself that often

  806. over the years

  807. you know my

  808. greatest fear in

  809. life

  810. is that I get

  811. really good at

  812. this job

  813. I get really

  814. comfy in church

  815. and I just get

  816. bored with Jesus

  817. how do I know

  818. friends

  819. have you lost

  820. the joy

  821. of knowing

  822. him

  823. has bible

  824. reading become

  825. routine

  826. has prayer

  827. become

  828. token

  829. has coming

  830. to church

  831. just become

  832. a thing

  833. that

  834. kills

  835. and fills

  836. a bit of

  837. time

  838. on a Sunday

  839. morning

  840. have you

  841. lost

  842. maybe

  843. the

  844. joy

  845. of serving

  846. him

  847. have you

  848. noticed

  849. inside

  850. of you

  851. I often

  852. catch myself

  853. doing this

  854. there's a

  855. critical spirit

  856. that's developing

  857. inside of you

  858. you're so aware

  859. in church

  860. of the things

  861. that aren't

  862. going well

  863. the things

  864. that are

  865. lacking

  866. rather than

  867. looking for

  868. the signs

  869. of the spirit

  870. at work

  871. if you

  872. recognize

  873. any of

  874. those signs

  875. and you

  876. want to

  877. change

  878. then here's

  879. a great

  880. place to

  881. start

  882. and

  883. taking

  884. a cue

  885. from the

  886. friends

  887. in this

  888. song

  889. what made

  890. you fall

  891. in love

  892. with Jesus

  893. in the

  894. first

  895. place

  896. you know

  897. was it

  898. his

  899. his

  900. boundless

  901. compassion

  902. for

  903. utterly

  904. helpless

  905. people

  906. was it

  907. his

  908. unrivaled

  909. wisdom

  910. to any

  911. question

  912. that people

  913. put to

  914. him

  915. was it

  916. the way

  917. that people

  918. said of

  919. him

  920. that he

  921. does all

  922. things

  923. well

  924. was it

  925. the way

  926. that he

  927. saw

  928. and remember

  929. this for

  930. me was

  931. one

  932. that he

  933. perfectly

  934. diagnosed

  935. the human

  936. heart

  937. the world

  938. that he

  939. was describing

  940. was the

  941. one that I

  942. was looking

  943. in and

  944. seeing

  945. was it

  946. his

  947. unhurried

  948. love and

  949. pursuit

  950. of

  951. flustered

  952. people

  953. was it

  954. the barriers

  955. he was

  956. willing to

  957. cross to

  958. reach

  959. societies

  960. outcasts

  961. and nobodies

  962. was it

  963. his

  964. sacrificial

  965. death

  966. on the

  967. cross

  968. as he

  969. took our

  970. sin and

  971. shame on

  972. himself

  973. as he

  974. said

  975. father

  976. not my

  977. will

  978. but your

  979. will be

  980. done

  981. friends

  982. what first

  983. drew you

  984. to Jesus

  985. what made

  986. you fall

  987. in love

  988. with him

  989. I've loved

  990. it the last

  991. couple of

  992. weeks hearing

  993. testimonies

  994. of people

  995. I love a

  996. testimony

  997. it is like

  998. hearing from

  999. someone who

  1000. has just

  1001. gone on

  1002. their first

  1003. date with

  1004. the person

  1005. they're going

  1006. to marry

  1007. in the

  1008. future

  1009. isn't it

  1010. right I

  1011. remember at

  1012. uni having

  1013. that experience

  1014. my flatmate

  1015. Ben came

  1016. home we're

  1017. up to like

  1018. three in the

  1019. morning telling

  1020. me about

  1021. this girl

  1022. Nikki that

  1023. he'd met

  1024. and in the

  1025. weeks to

  1026. follow I

  1027. could hear

  1028. him on the

  1029. phone tower

  1030. in the

  1031. bedroom doing

  1032. the whole

  1033. you hang

  1034. up no

  1035. you hang

  1036. up I

  1037. will come

  1038. in there

  1039. and hang

  1040. on that

  1041. phone if

  1042. you don't

  1043. hang up

  1044. but what

  1045. first drew

  1046. you to

  1047. Jesus in

  1048. the first

  1049. place do

  1050. you need

  1051. this morning

  1052. some of

  1053. us to

  1054. regain

  1055. that wonder

  1056. at who

  1057. he is

  1058. just like

  1059. in the

  1060. man the

  1061. man in

  1062. the song

  1063. here's the

  1064. wonderful

  1065. bit

  1066. Jesus is

  1067. knocking

  1068. here I

  1069. am I

  1070. stand

  1071. this is

  1072. what he's

  1073. saying to

  1074. the church

  1075. in Laodicea

  1076. here I

  1077. am I

  1078. stand at

  1079. the door

  1080. and knock

  1081. if anyone

  1082. hears my

  1083. voice and

  1084. opens the

  1085. door I

  1086. will come

  1087. in and

  1088. eat with

  1089. that person

  1090. and they

  1091. with me

  1092. he moves

  1093. from warning

  1094. why does

  1095. he give

  1096. them the

  1097. warning

  1098. because he

  1099. then moves

  1100. to wooing

  1101. and this

  1102. is the

  1103. Jesus that

  1104. we have

  1105. today and

  1106. you know

  1107. what the

  1108. wonderful

  1109. thing is

  1110. if you

  1111. just take

  1112. it straight

  1113. from the

  1114. text

  1115. like the

  1116. man in

  1117. this song

  1118. when the

  1119. woman wakes

  1120. and finds

  1121. him right

  1122. there with

  1123. her

  1124. do you know

  1125. what we all

  1126. need to know

  1127. today

  1128. when we turn

  1129. back to him

  1130. when we fix

  1131. our eyes on

  1132. who he is

  1133. however

  1134. spiritual

  1135. sleepy we

  1136. might be

  1137. and whatever

  1138. season of

  1139. life we

  1140. might be

  1141. in we

  1142. need to

  1143. know

  1144. that Jesus

  1145. is going

  1146. nowhere

  1147. have you

  1148. lost

  1149. sight

  1150. of how

  1151. wonderful

  1152. how

  1153. brilliant

  1154. how

  1155. committed

  1156. and how

  1157. available

  1158. a saviour

  1159. we have

  1160. in Jesus

  1161. turn to

  1162. him this

  1163. morning

  1164. turn to

  1165. him

  1166. you know

  1167. I found

  1168. so helpful

  1169. over the

  1170. last month

  1171. or so

  1172. just looking

  1173. for a

  1174. quick

  1175. thing

  1176. to do

  1177. you know

  1178. John's

  1179. gospel

  1180. 21

  1181. chapters

  1182. days of

  1183. the week

  1184. 7

  1185. 7 divided

  1186. by

  1187. 21

  1188. divided

  1189. by

  1190. 7

  1191. 3

  1192. just

  1193. found it

  1194. so helpful

  1195. every night

  1196. during the

  1197. week to

  1198. read 3

  1199. chapters of

  1200. John's

  1201. gospel

  1202. get it

  1203. done in

  1204. a week

  1205. go back

  1206. to the

  1207. beginning

  1208. read 3

  1209. chapters of

  1210. John's

  1211. gospel

  1212. get to

  1213. the end

  1214. go back

  1215. to the

  1216. beginning

  1217. and see

  1218. the things

  1219. that you

  1220. notice

  1221. in a book

  1222. that you

  1223. thought you

  1224. knew

  1225. I love

  1226. the

  1227. intentionality

  1228. of this

  1229. woman

  1230. when she

  1231. realizes

  1232. he's

  1233. knocking

  1234. she's

  1235. going

  1236. she's

  1237. looking

  1238. I wonder

  1239. if the

  1240. Lord by

  1241. his spirit

  1242. would stir

  1243. in us

  1244. that same

  1245. intention

  1246. to pursue

  1247. Jesus

  1248. today

  1249. you know

  1250. just as we

  1251. close

  1252. let me just

  1253. leave us

  1254. with this

  1255. thought

  1256. because I

  1257. think this

  1258. is the

  1259. the spirit

  1260. inspired

  1261. response that

  1262. we need to

  1263. make to

  1264. this text

  1265. today

  1266. you know

  1267. before Alex

  1268. and I

  1269. moved back

  1270. to Edinburgh

  1271. in 2012

  1272. we used

  1273. to live

  1274. in Bristol

  1275. and there

  1276. was a street

  1277. in Bristol

  1278. called

  1279. Muller Road

  1280. and I

  1281. had a friend

  1282. called Amy

  1283. who used

  1284. to live

  1285. in a big

  1286. house in

  1287. Muller Road

  1288. and her

  1289. and her

  1290. flatmates

  1291. nicknamed

  1292. it Fruit

  1293. Corner

  1294. which if you

  1295. know your

  1296. yogurts I

  1297. thought was

  1298. quite funny

  1299. but Muller

  1300. Road was

  1301. named after

  1302. this man

  1303. called

  1304. George Muller

  1305. George Muller

  1306. famous Christian

  1307. evangelist

  1308. best known

  1309. for building

  1310. five houses

  1337. with so many

  1338. things pressing

  1339. against his

  1340. to-do list

  1341. how he did

  1342. it

  1343. and he

  1344. said this

  1345. he said

  1346. the first

  1347. great and

  1348. primary business

  1349. to which I

  1350. ought to

  1351. attend every

  1352. day

  1353. is to have

  1354. my soul

  1355. happy in

  1356. the Lord

  1357. I love

  1358. that

  1359. have my

  1360. soul happy

  1361. in the Lord

  1362. you know I've

  1363. tried to be

  1364. I want to be

  1365. better at this

  1366. first thing

  1368. the morning

  1369. putting away

  1370. the phone

  1371. and picking

  1375. knocking

  1376. friends have

  1377. you forgotten

  1378. how wonderful

  1380. let me pray

  1381. Jesus

  1382. what a

  1393. blows all

  1394. fear away

  1395. Jesus

  1396. what a

  1397. beautiful name

  1400. pray this

  1401. morning

  1402. whatever

  1403. this has

  1404. landed

  1405. on our

  1406. hearts

  1407. and in

  1408. our

  1409. lives

  1410. that you

  1411. would

  1412. help us

  1413. Lord to

  1414. lift our

  1415. eyes to

  1416. Jesus

  1417. father thank

  1418. you that

  1419. there is

  1420. more grace

  1422. than there

  1423. is sin

  1424. in us

  1425. and so

  1426. father I

  1427. pray for

  1428. those of

  1429. us here

  1430. today who

  1445. that you

  1446. are available

  1447. thank you

  1448. that we were

  1449. singing at

  1455. are a

  1456. very present

  1457. help in

  1458. times of

  1459. trouble

  1460. but father

  1461. we pray

  1462. that you

  1463. would lift

  1464. our eyes

  1465. to Jesus

  1466. his greatness

  1467. today

  1468. father thank

  1469. you for

  1470. your word

  1471. thank you

  1472. that we

  1473. have it in

  1475. thank you

  1476. that we

  1477. can read

  1478. it pick

  1479. up understand

  1480. and learn

  1481. but father

  1482. thank you

  1483. most of

  1484. all that

  1485. through it

  1486. we can

  1487. know

  1488. Jesus

  1489. for

  1490. ourselves

  1491. so father

  1492. thank you

  1493. be with us

  1494. just as we

  1495. close our

  1496. time together
