  1. Morning everyone. I hope you're well. It's great to see you today. Great to meet some people for the first time today as well.

  2. ! My name is Graeme and I'm the pastor of the church here and it's just lovely to have you with us.

  3. If you have a Bible then please turn to the Song of Songs. We're going to be taking in

  4. chapters 6 from 6-4 to 8-4 today. Is that right David? We've got that? We've got that.

  5. And it's brilliant. So please come there. We're going to read this in about 10 minutes time. David's going to come and read that for us as we get into it.

  6. But I thought it'd be helpful, like we've done most weeks, just to have a little run-up so that we can kind of understand what we're going to read together from God's Word.

  7. So, as we get into this theme today, talking of golden oldies, Bruce Springsteen, the boss, released a song at the beginning of the 80s,

  8. the title of which so wonderfully captures the essence of what we're thinking about today in the Song of Songs.

  9. Springsteen's song is about the deep-seated restlessness and always searching nature that exists inside human beings.

  10. And do you know what he called the song? He called the song, Everybody's Got a Hungry Heart.

  11. Do I love that metaphor? Is that not so relatable? Everybody's got a hungry heart.

  12. And we recognise the metaphor. We relate to the metaphor because we are, as human beings, we are creatures of desire.

  13. We yearn, we search, we think, we feel, we long, we smile, we cry.

  14. And here's the thing. God didn't need to make us like that.

  15. You know, I often play a game in my head and it's called this.

  16. It's called, Imagine the World God Could Have Made.

  17. I'd like you to play it with me this morning.

  18. Imagine the world God could have made.

  19. He could have made a world with one colour.

  20. Right? We'd all be like John Wayne walking about in a black and white Western movie.

  21. One colour.

  22. God could have made a world with one type of food.

  23. And because of that, a world where there was only one flavour.

  24. Okay?

  25. Just imagine how boring potluck dinners would be with one food and one flavour.

  26. God could have made a world where there was just one smell.

  27. God could have created a world where there was just one species of birds.

  28. God could have created a world where there was one type of flavour.

  29. God could have created a world where there was one type of weather.

  30. but what we discover about this God when you come to the pages of the Bible

  31. is that there is a reason that he didn't.

  32. God made a world with such breathtaking variety and diversity

  33. in order to communicate to us something of the reality of who he is

  34. and his beauty as the triune God, Father, Son and Spirit.

  35. And if you think about human beings,

  36. he could have made a world where all of us were just C-3PO's.

  37. Have you ever thought about that?

  38. Could have made us all robots.

  39. He could have done this whole gig, this whole world with ChatGBT.

  40. Couldn't he?

  41. Computers do words well better than we do.

  42. Computers are reliable way more than we are.

  43. God could have created a world like that.

  44. We were all robots.

  45. But this God chose to create human beings with desires.

  46. And what we're going to see is although those desires have been disordered

  47. and tainted by the fall,

  48. we have to understand that they are not the result of the fall.

  49. Particularly those desires for love and romance,

  50. which is what this series has really been all about.

  51. Which begs the question, does it not?

  52. Considering the world God could have made.

  53. It begs the question, why?

  54. Now all the way through this series we've talked about turning down the world's song

  55. and turning up God's song in the Song of Songs.

  56. Because into our world right now, our hyper-individualized culture,

  57. if you remember way back at the first one of these,

  58. we thought about our culture today.

  59. The song that it's singing is saying,

  60. Feelings are king.

  61. The world song right now is,

  62. You decide.

  63. You decide who you want to be.

  64. And if it feels good,

  65. then who is anyone else to come along and tell you that it's wrong?

  66. Do it.

  67. And the inbuilt assumption, isn't it,

  68. with all that stuff,

  69. is that our desires, particularly our romantic ones,

  70. the things that we want are always right.

  71. And maybe a question for you to think about today,

  72. wherever you're coming at this from,

  73. we love that you're here,

  74. is how do you know?

  75. You know, here's non-Christian columnist,

  76. Christine Emba,

  77. she's writing for the Washington Post 2017,

  78. in an article that she called it,

  79. Is It Time to Rethink Sex?

  80. She wrote this, it's on the screen.

  81. Is it time to pursue the theory

  82. that sex possibly has a deeper significance

  83. than just recreation?

  84. I love those moments

  85. when society kind of catches up with scripture,

  86. because that's precisely what our creator

  87. has been telling us since the beginning,

  88. that when it comes to our desires,

  89. there's something bigger going on.

  90. And there's something bigger

  91. that's on offer that we need to see.

  92. God designed human sexuality

  93. as is expressed in the marriage

  94. between one man and one woman,

  95. designed it so that we'd understand

  96. what it is to self-give yourself to a spouse,

  97. so that we would see that those desires

  98. are but a faint echo

  99. of and a massive pointer to

  100. the love that Jesus has for the church.

  101. And that's the meaning of the cosmos.

  102. It's why we're here today.

  103. We're swept up into this story.

  104. It's all wrapped up in the purpose of the universe.

  105. And see, when you understand

  106. it against that bigger backdrop,

  107. here's what I think this tells us loud and clear.

  108. It means that we can know

  109. that we're so much more

  110. than our relationship status.

  111. We are so much more than our marital prospects.

  112. We are so much more,

  113. if I can put it like this,

  114. than our sex lives.

  115. We were made to revere

  116. and know somebody

  117. infinitely more interesting

  118. than ourselves.

  119. I turned 40 the other day

  120. when I told people that

  121. it was almost as if

  122. welcome to the boring club.

  123. And do you know what?

  124. I'm okay with that.

  125. I'm okay with that.

  126. Do you know why?

  127. Because I think

  128. the one thing God has taught me

  129. over the years is that,

  130. that I was made to know somebody

  131. infinitely way more interesting than me.

  132. Because I'm not all that interesting.

  133. But come to the God of the Bible

  134. and you find a God

  135. who is infinitely interesting,

  136. fascinating,

  137. beautiful,

  138. wonderful.

  139. And it's Him

  140. that we are designed to know.

  141. You and I were made, friends,

  142. to know

  143. the God

  144. who delights

  145. in us.

  146. And in turn,

  147. this is what we're going to see today.

  148. We were made

  149. to delight in

  150. and desire

  151. Him.

  152. And that's what we're going to hear today

  153. in this song.

  154. In the voices of this man

  155. and the woman

  156. who are singing to us

  157. in the Song of Songs.

  158. If you're joining us

  159. for the first time,

  160. we are in the

  161. wisdom section

  162. of our

  163. Bibles.

  164. which is all about

  165. how to live

  166. in God's way,

  167. in God's world,

  168. for His glory

  169. and for our good.

  170. It's wisdom.

  171. And we've journeyed

  172. with this couple

  173. as it were

  174. from their first date,

  175. through their wedding day,

  176. through a cold spell

  177. in the relationship.

  178. And now today

  179. we're going to see

  180. their love for each other

  181. continue to blossom.

  182. And here,

  183. as we just hear it read,

  184. here's two things

  185. I want you to look for

  186. here in His voice.

  187. Listen for how

  188. He describes

  189. how in His eyes

  190. this woman

  191. is utterly unique.

  192. And in turn,

  193. listen for how

  194. in her voice

  195. she responds

  196. in love

  197. to His

  198. all-out pursuit

  199. of her.

  200. So David is going to come now

  201. and we're going to read this together

  202. beginning at 6,

  203. chapter 4

  204. and then we're going to get

  205. into it together.

  206. So David,

  207. over to you.

  208. My name is David

  209. and I have the privilege

  210. of being a member here.

  211. Just before we read this,

  212. I would just like to pray.

  213. Father,

  214. we just thank you again

  215. for your word.

  216. It's so precious

  217. and we just ask that

  218. as we read it,

  219. your spirit

  220. might be with us

  221. and that we might

  222. just hear your voice.

  223. It's being read,

  224. it's being

  225. talked about

  226. just so that

  227. there's a message

  228. for each one of us.

  229. A personal message.

  230. None left out.

  231. And we just ask

  232. for each one of our hearts

  233. that we might just

  234. hear your voice

  235. and hear this message

  236. for us.

  237. and just be with Graham too

  238. as he seeks to

  239. open up this passage.

  240. Sometimes some of the

  241. words and the imagery

  242. is difficult to understand

  243. but we just ask

  244. that your spirit

  245. might be with him

  246. to give him the words

  247. and to give him the message

  248. and to open it up

  249. in clarity

  250. for each one of us

  251. so that we understand

  252. more

  253. the wonderful love

  254. that you have for us

  255. and that the experience

  256. we can have

  257. of a relationship

  258. with yourself.

  259. We just ask this

  260. in your name.

  261. Amen.

  262. We're in the Song of Songs

Song of Solomon 6 chapter mention

  263. chapter 6

  264. and verse 4

  265. and that's

  266. page 684

  267. in the Pew Bibles.

  268. Starts in verse 4.

  269. This is the

  270. bridegroom speaking.

  271. You are as beautiful

  272. as Terzah my darling

  273. as lovely

  274. as Jerusalem

  275. as majestic

  276. as troops

  277. with banners.

  278. Turn your eyes

  279. from me

  280. they overwhelm me

  281. your hair

  282. is like a flock

  283. of goats

  284. descending from Gilead

  285. your teeth

  286. are like a flock

  287. of sheep

  288. coming up

  289. from the washing

  290. each has its twin

  291. not one of them

  292. is missing

  293. your temples

  294. behind your veil

  295. are like the halves

  296. of a pomegranate

  297. sixty queens

  298. there may be

  299. and eighty concubines

  300. and virgins

  301. beyond number

  302. but my dove

  303. my perfect one

  304. is unique

  305. the only daughter

  306. of her mother

  307. the favourite

  308. of the one

  309. who bore her

  310. the young woman

  311. saw her

  312. and called her

  313. blessed

  314. the queens

  315. and the concubines

  316. praised her

  317. who is this

  318. that appears

  319. like the dawn

  320. fair as the moon

  321. bright as the sun

  322. majestic

  323. as the stars

  324. and processing

  325. I went down

  326. to the grove

  327. of nut trees

  328. to look

  329. at the new growth

  330. in the valley

  331. to see if the vines

  332. had budded

  333. or the pomegranates

  334. were in bloom

  335. before I realised it

  336. my desire

  337. set me upon

  338. the royal chariots

  339. of my people

  340. come back

  341. come back

  342. oh Shulamite

  343. come back

  344. come back

  345. that we may gaze

  346. on you

  347. why would you gaze

  348. on the Shulamite

  349. as in the dance

  350. of Mahanaim

  351. how beautiful

  352. your shrandled feet

  353. told Prince's daughter

  354. your graceful legs

  355. are like jewels

  356. the work

  357. of an artist's hands

  358. your navel

  359. is a rounded goblet

  360. that never lacks

  361. blended wine

  362. your waist

  363. is a mound of wheat

  364. encircled by lilies

  365. your breasts

  366. are like two fawns

  367. like twin fawns

  368. of a gazelle

  369. your neck

  370. is like an ivory tower

  371. your eyes

  372. are the pools

  373. of Heshbon

  374. by the gate

  375. of Bathraben

  376. your nose

  377. is like the tower

  378. of Lebanon

  379. looking towards Damascus

  380. your head

  381. crowns you

  382. like Mount Carmel

  383. your hair

  384. is like royal tapestry

  385. the king

  386. is held captive

  387. by its tresses

  388. how beautiful

  389. you are

  390. and how pleasing

  391. my love

  392. with your delights

  393. your stature

  394. is like that

  395. of the palm

  396. and your breasts

  397. like clusters of fruit

  398. I said

  399. I will climb

  400. the palm tree

  401. I will take hold

  402. of its fruit

  403. may your breasts

  404. be like clusters

  405. of grapes

  406. and the vine

  407. the fragrance

  408. of your breath

  409. like apples

  410. and your mouth

  411. like the best wine

  412. may the wine

  413. go straight

  414. to my beloved

  415. flowing gently

  416. over lips

  417. and teeth

  418. I belong

  419. to my beloved

  420. and his desire

  421. is for me

  422. come my beloved

  423. let us go

  424. to the countryside

  425. let us spend

  426. the night

  427. in the villages

  428. let us go

  429. early to the vineyards

  430. to see if the vines

  431. have budded

  432. if their blossoms

  433. have opened

  434. and if the

  435. pomegranates

  436. are in bloom

  437. there I will

  438. give you my love

  439. the mandrakes

  440. sent out their

  441. fragrance

  442. and at our door

  443. is every delicacy

  444. both new

  445. and old

  446. and I have

  447. stored up for you

  448. my beloved

  449. if only you were

  450. to me like a brother

  451. who was nursed

  452. at my mother's breasts

  453. then

  454. if I find you

  455. outside

  456. I would kiss you

  457. and no one

  458. would despise me

  459. I would lead you

  460. and bring you

  461. to my mother's house

  462. she who has taught me

  463. I would give you

  464. spiced wine to drink

  465. the nectar

  466. of my pomegranates

  467. his left arm

  468. is under my head

  469. and his right arm

  470. embraces me

  471. daughters of Jews

  472. whom I charge you

  473. do not arouse

  474. or awaken love

  475. until it so desires

  476. it's the word of the Lord

  477. okay thanks so much David

  478. so folks

  479. here's what we're

  480. going to do

  481. I just want to pick

  482. out one big theme

  483. that captures

  484. the essence

  485. of his song

  486. over her

  487. and then in turn

  488. I want us to think

  489. about one big theme

  490. that captures

  491. the essence

  492. of her song

  493. over him

  494. so

  495. beginning with

  496. his song

  497. here's the theme

  498. really simply

  499. is I want

  500. all of you

  501. and this is the

  502. inverse isn't it

  503. of remember that

  504. Chesney Hawk song

  505. that we still sing

  506. all the time

  507. he's saying

  508. you are the one

  509. and only

  510. that's what he's

  511. saying isn't it

  512. you are the one

  513. and only

  514. picking it up

  515. at verse 4

  516. of chapter 6

  517. and hear him

  518. celebrate the

  519. renewed togetherness

  520. that he and his

  521. wife have just

  522. experienced

  523. and he's going

  524. with the compliments

  525. isn't he

  526. so you are as

  527. beautiful as

  528. Tisra

  529. and Jerusalem

  530. my love

  531. so these are the

  532. these are the

  533. two prominent

  534. Israelite cities

  535. cities

  536. and what's

  537. going on here

  538. what he's saying

  539. is you wow

  540. me

  541. right I remember

  542. cities they

  543. they often have

  544. that effect on us

  545. as human beings

  546. don't they I

  547. remember taking

  548. off from a

  549. couple of years

  550. ago from New

  551. York airport

  552. and just being

  553. struck by the

  554. sheer size and

  555. the vastness of

  556. New York as it

  557. hits you right

  558. there and that

  559. Alicia Keys song

  560. comes to mind

  561. these streets will

  562. make you feel

  563. brand new big

  564. lights will inspire

  565. you we get this

  566. stuff we get the

  567. wow factor that

  568. comes with cities

  569. that's kind of

  570. what's going on

  571. here and he's

  572. saying it's your

  573. beauty is almost

  574. overwhelming I

  575. have to turn away

  576. and I love it it

  577. was Keita who

  578. pointed out to me

  579. just how specific

  580. he is with his

  581. compliments did you

  582. notice that your

  583. hair your teeth

  584. your cheeks and

  585. see him sum up at

  586. verse 9 he says

  587. 60 queens 80

  588. concubines so I

  589. think what he's

  590. doing is he's

  591. saying the world

  592. is not short of

  593. woman but to me

  594. you are not simply

  595. a woman you are

  596. the woman and you

  597. are utterly unique

  598. did you pick that

  599. up in his voice

  600. and then if you

  601. jump over to

  602. chapter 7 his

  603. kind of song

  604. breaks for a bit

  605. and then he goes

  606. back we get more

  607. of his song he

  608. goes your belly

  609. your breasts your

  610. neck your eyes and

  611. you'd be right in

  612. thinking that we've

  613. kind of heard this

  614. stuff before but

  615. before we label him

  616. uncreative and write

  617. him off as a picks

  618. up flowers from the

  619. petrol station just

  620. before he gets home

  621. on his anniversary

  622. kind of guy understand

  623. that what he's saying

  624. to her is all these

  625. beauties I still see

  626. them in you but more

  627. than that verse 4 he

  628. says do you notice

  629. your nose your head

  630. crowns you like

  631. caramel and the the

  632. reference to purple

  633. there conveys this

  634. idea of royalty how

  635. beautiful and pleasant

  636. you are verse 9 your

  637. scent your mouth your

  638. scent your mouth do you

  639. see it this is brand

  640. new material and what

  641. he's conveying is that

  642. he sees as well as

  643. the beauties that have

  644. always captured his

  645. eyes and his heart

  646. is that he sees now new

  647. beauties in her because

  648. he knows her so much

  649. better and there's a

  650. side application there

  651. isn't there firstly for

  652. those of us who are

  653. married and it's to make

  654. our spouses our lifelong

  655. phd project what new

  656. beauties do you notice

  657. in them they don't need

  658. to necessarily be

  659. physical I take it they

  660. could be character

  661. compliments I see you

  662. growing in patience I

  663. see how you're being a

  664. good friend to so many

  665. people I see how you're

  666. sacrificing yourself for

  667. the kids I see how you're

  668. responding to work in a

  669. different way than you

  670. did previously when you

  671. look at them how do you

  672. see the spirit at work in

  673. their lives but the same

  674. as we brought the same

  675. principle we brought

  676. out applies to our

  677. church family as well

  678. because our culture has

  679. made an idol of romantic

  680. love but the truth we

  681. need to hear is that we

  682. don't have to be

  683. romantically involved with

  684. or in love with someone to

  685. experience what true love

  686. is because the love that

  687. God creates and he calls

  688. us together to exhibit

  689. this love within the

  690. people of God is a

  691. species of love that is

  692. found nowhere else in the

  693. world and why is that it

  694. is because it's a love that

  695. comes from above you know a

  696. church we're loving

  697. appreciation of each other

  698. that we notice the little

  699. things when that is the

  700. norm that is going to be

  701. wildly attractive to a

  702. world out there who really

  703. knows nothing of this so who

  704. could you be thanking

  705. specifically this morning

  706. what could you be appreciating

  707. in someone else this morning

  708. a brother and sister who

  709. served you in this church

  710. you know his view of her is

  711. that she is utterly unique

  712. and that means that his love

  713. for her is totally exclusive

  714. and that's marriage love

  715. according to God's good

  716. design as we see it here in

  717. his wisdom portion of his

  718. word and as we look upon the

  719. way of wisdom here I realize

  720. friends that for so many of us

  721. this hasn't been our

  722. experience personally maybe

  723. it's something that you've

  724. viewed in your family or

  725. whatever and you have been

  726. much in my prayers constantly

  727. this week that the Holy

  728. Spirit would be particularly

  729. near to you bringing you a

  730. very sense very real sense of

  731. Jesus's love for you and his

  732. hold on you and his knowledge

  733. of your life in all its ups

  734. and downs maybe for some of us

  735. this might be a really timely

  736. reminder about how seriously

  737. we should take exclusivity

  738. that you don't look at other

  739. people the way that you do

  740. your spouse whether in real life

  741. or maybe particularly in the

  742. culture and in the day in which

  743. we live online friends let me

  744. say in love as your pastor do

  745. not let porn torpedo your

  746. marriage and steal from you the

  747. love that's at the center of your

  748. relationships and your

  749. friendships if the snake of

  750. porn has slithered its way

  751. subtly into your life you've got

  752. to do all that you can to get out

  753. of it and if that means telling

  754. someone this morning can I

  755. encourage you to do the brave and

  756. the right thing because the devil

  757. will do anything to help to convince

  758. you that the darkness is the safer

  759. place to live your life and Jesus

  760. would call you out of that into his

  761. marvelous light and freedom

  762. you know we all long for

  763. faithfulness

  764. it's the thing that we seek in all

  765. our important relationships in our

  766. communities it's the thing that we

  767. even want in our governments you

  768. know my brother is in finance and

  769. that's why he often tells me that a

  770. good day in the markets is a stable

  771. day in the markets that's why mr

  772. trump is still causing headaches all

  773. over the world isn't he

  774. you can work with stability you know

  775. where you are with stability and

  776. that's exactly what he's saying about

  777. his love for her it is exclusive it is

  778. fiercely loyal and it will fight to

  779. have love right at the center

  780. and if that's the theme of his song

  781. all I want is you the reciprocating

  782. theme of her song is you have all of

  783. me and if you look at verse 13 see

  784. that hole and maybe you notice it

  785. there it's quite striking isn't it the

  786. whole come back come back shulamite

  787. language and presumably shulamite is

  788. most likely a reference to just where

  789. she's from

  790. that could just be another indicator

  791. that's showing us that she's still

  792. feeling a little bit insecure unsure

  793. doesn't really want know what to do

  794. with this love and attention

  795. but notice the directional language

  796. that you get at verse 10 and if you

  797. remember one verse from this section

  798. remember this

  799. notice the directional language what is it

  800. that changes the game for her

  801. it is the knowledge of how secure and

  802. how firm and how exclusive and how loyal

  803. his desire is for her

  804. and what that does is stir a response

  805. within her of love and desire for him

  806. and the Hebrew word there for desire

  807. it's only used two other places in the

  808. Old Testament

  809. one of which is Genesis 3

  810. so you get in that scene as Eve eats the

  811. the fruit from the forbidden tree and God

  812. lays out to Adam and Eve the consequences for

  813. their sin and rebellion

  814. one of those things is going to be that

  815. their desires are going to be inverted

  816. so Eve will now seek to desire and possess

  817. Adam and in turn Adam will attempt to rule over

  818. her

  819. so rather than love being self-giving

  820. a result of the fall is that love is now going to be

  821. self-serving and there's going to be friction and there's going to be tension

  822. and this as we read Genesis 3 is desire gone wrong

  823. and by the time you get to Genesis 4 and we meet Cain

  824. the same word is used there

  825. when God says to Cain sin is crouching at your door

  826. its desire is to master you

  827. have you

  828. so desire in Genesis 3 and 4 is about turning away from God

  829. and turning inward towards sin and self-worship

  830. but notice see if you look at chapter 7 verses 10 to 13

  831. just have a look at it there

  832. scan your eyes over it

  833. notice the echoes of Eden

  834. notice the Garden of Eden imagery

  835. do you see it?

  836. vineyards

  837. vines

  838. blossoms

  839. mandrakes

  840. delicacies

  841. life in Eden pre-sin

  842. so what I think this is telling us is that what we have here with this couple

  843. unlike Adam and Eve

  844. is desire made right

  845. and so at verse 3 we take them in being eye to eye

  846. we need to see how the power of his embrace

  847. stirs something deep within her

  848. to the point where she implores her friends

  849. not to awaken love until the time is right

  850. she's saying don't settle for anything less than this

  851. and the fact that that is the third time that this refrain has cropped up in this song

  852. should awaken us to the fact that God in his perfect wisdom

  853. is trying to communicate something to us

  854. that he knows we so desperately need to hear

  855. because friends we are poor captains of our own ships

  856. we are poor stewards of our own identities

  857. we are poor objects of our worship

  858. maybe you're feeling the pain of misdirected and unmet desires today

  859. even as I speak and as we read this together

  860. there is wonderful hope for all of us

  861. but maybe particularly for you this morning

  862. as we take in this

  863. because as we take in his desire for her

  864. we need to know that there was another man in the Bible who came

  865. desiring a bride

  866. and his name is Jesus

  867. he came to earth

  868. for his bride

  869. he lived a perfect life

  870. to win his bride

  871. he died on the cross to redeem

  872. and cleanse his bride

  873. from all our mistakes

  874. all our sin

  875. and all our shame

  876. Christ came

  877. seeking a bride

  878. and so as we gaze at this woman

  879. and hear her tell us

  880. that it was the safe knowledge of how secure

  881. his desire was for her

  882. that brought out this reciprocal love for him

  883. here's what we need to know today

  884. that if you're a Christian here today

  885. we can look on Christ

  886. and we can savour the fact

  887. that his desire

  888. is for us

  889. God's plan

  890. since the found

  891. before the foundation of the world

  892. has been to call out

  893. and create

  894. a people for himself

  895. call them out of the world

  896. God's plan has always been to call out a people

  897. and to have them know

  898. and savour the fact

  899. that they are a bride

  900. and to have that bride

  901. as she takes in the love

  902. of the bridegroom for her

  903. to have that bride

  904. absolutely gush in affection

  905. for the groom

  906. and that's exactly where this points us

  907. to the gospel

  908. and to how wonderful our king is

  909. and his desire for us

  910. and his love for us

  911. and his exclusive affection for us

  912. no matter how you're feeling here today

  913. if you're feeling weak in your faith

  914. if you're feeling discouraged

  915. if you're feeling disheartened

  916. if you're feeling really, really sad

  917. then take in your groom's love

  918. for you

  919. you know just as we close

  920. and maybe to try and

  921. set this up

  922. for where we're going to finish next week

  923. as we finish this little series

  924. please come back for it

  925. but here's a thought for you

  926. do you know that there's only two types of people

  927. in this world that read a will

  928. can you think who they are

  929. I remember this from my time

  930. studying law at university

  931. there's only two types of people

  932. that read a will

  933. here's the first type of person

  934. it's the lawyer

  935. and to them reading a will

  936. is really just doing a job

  937. simply being paid to interpret

  938. and execute words on a page

  939. right

  940. I've got a lot of friends

  941. who work in succession

  942. in the states

  943. and that's what they tell you

  944. they just keep on coming

  945. I'm not really getting excited

  946. about a will

  947. I'm just executing

  948. delivering

  949. passing on the information

  950. I'm just doing my job

  951. but there's a second type of person

  952. who reads a will

  953. it's an heir

  954. and to them reading a will

  955. it's not just a job

  956. it's not just words on a page

  957. it's a promise

  958. and it's a promise

  959. about what's coming to them

  960. at some point in the future

  961. and how about how

  962. what's coming to them

  963. at some point in the future

  964. totally changes

  965. how they live today

  966. in anticipation of the thing

  967. that's coming to them

  968. and Fred's God

  969. would want us to read this

  970. not as a lawyer would

  971. but as an heir would

  972. about all his promises

  973. in scripture

  974. have you ever thought about

  975. that's how we should read them

  976. we should read them

  977. as an heir

  978. looking at a will

  979. thinking about this

  980. is what the future holds

  981. you see now we know

  982. the one who desires us

  983. by faith

  984. through the power

  985. of the spirit

  986. but this is particularly

  987. what we're going to think

  988. about next week

  989. see when he returns

  990. we will no longer

  991. know him by faith

  992. we will no longer

  993. know our groom

  994. by faith

  995. as we read his words

  996. as we meet him

  997. through the power

  998. of his spirit

  999. we will know him then

  1000. by sight

1001. I belong to my beloved

  1002. and his desire

  1003. is for me

  1004. let me pray

  1005. and so father

  1006. we thank you

  1007. for the gospel

  1008. this morning

  1009. thank you

  1010. for the message

  1011. about the

  1012. all pursuing

  1013. loving

  1014. Jesus

  1015. thank you

  1016. that we can

  1017. read this

  1018. and know

  1019. that the church

  1020. those who

  1021. put their faith

  1022. in Jesus

  1023. truly are

  1024. the apple

  1025. of his eye

  1026. and so father

  1027. I pray

  1028. that as

  1029. this

  1030. word of yours

  1031. this morning

  1032. as it touches

  1033. lord

  1034. our hearts

  1035. in different ways

  1036. I pray

  1037. father

  1038. that by your spirit

  1039. that you may be

  1040. bringing healing

  1041. and that you

  1042. would be bringing

  1043. certainty

  1044. lord

  1045. that you would be

  1046. bringing conviction

  1047. and challenge

  1048. but father

  1049. most of all

  1050. you would bring us

  1051. that knowledge

  1052. of our saviour

  1053. and his love

  1054. for us

  1055. father

  1056. we thank you

  1057. for each other

  1058. today

  1059. that we do not

  1060. journey this

  1061. Christian life

  1062. alone

  1063. but we journey

  1064. together

  1065. and so father

  1066. as we move

  1067. to a time

  1068. of communion

  1069. in just a few

  1070. moments

  1071. lord

  1072. may the sweetness

  1073. of what Jesus

  1074. has done

  1075. for us

  1076. come home

  1077. maybe in

  1078. a fresh

  1079. reality today

  1080. father we thank

  1081. you for your love

  1082. for us

  1083. and we pray

  1084. now that you

  1085. would continue

  1086. to be with us

  1087. by your spirit

  1088. in Jesus's name

  1089. we ask

  1090. amen
