  1. Thank you for reading the scriptures for us.

  2. Do keep your Bibles open, or keep your phone open at the Bible app

  3. ! as we look at John's Gospel together,

  4. and particularly we're going to be focusing on chapter 14

  5. !

  6. Why are Christians so devoted to Jesus?

  7. Why do Christians long for opportunities to tell other people about Jesus,

  8. friends, even complete strangers?

  9. Why do they want to take part in a nationwide Gospel mission

  10. to tell more people about Jesus?

  11. Maybe you've been dragged along by a Christian friend,

  12. and they're keen for you to come and to hear about Jesus.

  13. Why?

  14. Well, a great way to answer those questions

  15. is to look at the seven wonderful sayings of Jesus

  16. that we find in John's Gospel that are called the I Am sayings,

  17. where Jesus says things like,

  18. I am the light of the world,

  19. I am the good shepherd,

  20. I am the bread of life.

  21. We can't look at all seven this morning,

  22. but we're going to focus in on one of those great sayings,

  23. arguably the greatest of these sayings,

  24. and arguably the most controversial of these sayings,

  25. where Jesus says,

  26. I am the way,

  27. and the truth,

  28. and the life.

  29. The declaration itself comes in in verse 6,

  30. but I want us to get the context,

  31. so let's work our way towards it from verse 1.

  32. And our passage begins with comforting words

  33. for troubled disciples.

  34. Jesus is eating a final meal with his closest followers

  35. before his arrest, trial, and execution.

  36. So in just a few hours, he's going to be arrested.

  37. There's going to be a trial with the Jewish court overnight.

  38. The next day, he'll be on trial before the Roman governor,

  39. Pilate, he'll be condemned to death.

  40. He'll be nailed to a cross.

  41. The next day, he'll be dead.

  42. And his disciples are deeply troubled.

  43. I hope you've enjoyed many relaxed evenings out in your life,

  44. going out for a meal with family, with friends.

  45. Well, this is no relaxed evening out.

  46. The atmosphere is heavy,

  47. with the distressing and confusing impact of Jesus' words.

  48. He's talked about one of them betraying him,

  49. and then of leaving them,

  50. and saying they cannot go where he is going.

  51. So where is he going?

  52. Why is he going?

  53. Why can't they go with him?

  54. He says they will follow later,

  55. and his most loyal follower, Peter,

  56. the passionate, devoted Peter has protested,

  57. Lord, why can't I follow you now?

  58. I will lay down my life for you.

  59. Will you really?

  60. Will you really?

  61. Says Jesus.

  62. No, you won't, Peter.

  63. Three times you are going to disown me.

  64. What words to create a sense of foreboding.

  65. What terrible events could cause Peter to disown Jesus?

  66. So no wonder they're deeply troubled.

  67. And Jesus speaks words of comfort to his troubled disciples.

  68. And he begins by saying,

  69. do not let your hearts be troubled.

  70. Christian, maybe you've come this morning with a troubled heart.

  71. And actually the words that your Lord wants you to hear this morning,

  72. are simply those words,

  73. do not let your hearts be troubled.

  74. But Jesus says that,

  75. but he then follows on with a remarkable call to faith.

  76. He says, believe, or we could simply translate it trust,

  77. trust in God,

  78. trust also in me.

  79. That's how we can let our hearts not be troubled.

  80. It's by trusting in God,

  81. trusting in Jesus.

  82. But what makes this so remarkable,

  83. it's not so much that he tells them to calm their fears

  84. by trusting in God.

  85. That's sort of common enough in the Bible.

  86. What is remarkable is that he calls them

  87. in the very same breath to put their trust in him.

  88. Trust in God, trust also in me.

  89. The implication is inescapable

  90. that he is somehow making himself equal with God.

  91. But he doesn't call them to an ignorant faith,

  92. a blind trust.

  93. He gives them reasons to trust

  94. with three wonderful revelations

  95. about the ultimate future.

  96. So no, he doesn't try to calm their fears

  97. simply by saying,

  98. don't worry, it's going to be okay.

  99. By sort of playing down the pains and sorrows that lie ahead.

  100. Sometimes life is very troublesome,

  101. it's very painful, it's very sorrowful.

  102. Instead, he directs their minds

  103. way beyond the troubles that lie ahead

  104. for them in this world.

  105. And he speaks in verses 2 and 3

  106. about the heaven to come

  107. and the eternal age beyond this world.

  108. And he reveals three great realities about heaven.

  109. The first, according to verse 2,

  110. and please don't miss the beauty of this,

  111. he says that heaven is his father's house.

  112. Heaven is not a sort of a vague,

  113. unimaginable place it is for us,

  114. for Jesus.

  115. It's not vague and unimaginable.

  116. Now, for some of us,

  117. we've just sort of seen far too many

  118. pre-ulaphalite paintings with chubby cherubs

  119. playing harps and floating on clouds,

  120. and that's just a ridiculous image of heaven.

  121. But for Jesus, it's his home.

  122. It's the home from which he's come

  123. and to which he is returning.

  124. Home is the place,

  125. heaven is the place where he has enjoyed

  126. intimate, eternal relationship with his father.

  127. Heaven is his father's house.

  128. And then he says, second,

  129. that heaven has room

  130. for all who will believe in Jesus.

  131. So the point of verse 2

  132. lies really in the word many,

  133. that in his father's house are many rooms.

  134. Room for all the disciples,

  135. not just for this small group he's eating with,

  136. but room for all who will believe in Jesus

  137. from every people, tribe, and nation.

  138. And then third,

  139. and here is the very heart of the Christian message,

  140. that our place in heaven

  141. is prepared by his going.

  142. So in verse 2 he says,

  143. he must go to prepare

  144. a place in his father's house

  145. for his disciples.

  146. That doesn't mean

  147. he's going to get the place ready.

  148. My wife's parents used to live

  149. quite near us in Haberysheath,

  150. but they then moved down to Cornwall

  151. to be near my wife's sister.

  152. And they were buying a bungalow

  153. and it needed a lot of work doing.

  154. They couldn't live there for six months

  155. because there was building work to be done

  156. and the place had to be prepared.

  157. And then when the building work was finished,

  158. then there was the electrics to do

  159. and the plumbing and the plastering

  160. and then the decorating

  161. and then the carpets had to go down

  162. and then it had to be furnished

  163. and all those things had to be done

  164. to prepare the place for them to live there.

  165. Is that what Jesus has to go and do?

  166. Well, that is a bit ridiculous really, isn't it?

  167. All eternity to prepare the place

  168. and it's not ready?

  169. No, no, no.

  170. It's his act of going

  171. which is essential

  172. if there is to be a place for us

  173. in his father's house.

  174. Our Bible translation here says

  175. I'm going there to prepare a place for you.

  176. Other translations, perhaps more accurately,

  177. simply say I go to prepare a place for you.

  178. I go.

  179. And in John's Gospel,

  180. it's his act of going

  181. which is a big deal

  182. because his going is via the cross.

  183. His going entails his sin-bearing death

  184. followed by his triumphant resurrection

  185. and ascension to the father.

  186. It is going to the cross

  187. to pay for our sins

  188. that prepares a place for us.

  189. Because we can't enter

  190. the father's house

  191. carrying the guilt

  192. and the defilement of our sins,

  193. of our many offenses against God,

  194. the things that provoke his anger,

  195. his holy, just anger.

  196. We can't...

  197. Now, I think this will make sense to you.

  198. We can't barge our way

  199. into the father's house

  200. as enemies of God.

  201. We can only enter his house as friends,

  202. reconciled, forgiven,

  203. through the work of Jesus on the cross.

  204. So that's the third and greatest revelation

  205. in these verses

  206. that our place in heaven

  207. is prepared

  208. by his going to the cross.

  209. Two great reassurances naturally follow.

  210. First, he promises to take us there

  211. to be with him.

  212. You see that in verse 3.

  213. Let's look at that.

  214. He says,

  215. I will come back

  216. and take you to be with me

  217. that you also may be where I am.

  218. If he's willing to go to the cross for us,

  219. we can certainly trust him

  220. to come back and take us home,

  221. to be with him.

  222. He would hardly endure the cross for us

  223. and then fail to take us home.

  224. And then secondly,

  225. he says,

  226. you know the way to the place

  227. where I'm going,

  228. in verse 4.

  229. And we'll see in a moment

  230. that Jesus is saying

  231. we know the way,

  232. or his disciples know the way,

  233. because they know him.

  234. And what a reassurance that is.

  235. That to know him

  236. is to know the way.

  237. So these are comforting words

  238. for troubled disciples.

  239. Do not let your hearts be troubled.

  240. Heaven is his father's house.

  241. Heaven has room

  242. for all who will believe in him.

  243. Our place in heaven

  244. is prepared by his going.

  245. He promises to take us there

  246. to be with him.

  247. And if we know Jesus,

  248. we know the way.

  249. That then is the context

  250. for controversial words

  251. in answer to a troubling question.

  252. Verses 5 and 6.

  253. You see, straightforward,

  254. down to earth,

  255. Thomas doesn't get it.

  256. I don't know whether you attend

  257. a Bible study group

  258. in the church here,

  259. but Thomas would be great

  260. to have in your Bible study group

  261. because he would be quite happy

  262. to say to the leader,

  263. we don't know what you're talking about.

  264. I haven't got a clue.

  265. All this talk of the father's house

  266. has left him confused.

  267. See what he says in verse 5?

  268. Lord, we don't know where you're going,

  269. so how can we know the way?

  270. Now, beyond Thomas' immediate concern,

  271. it is a troubling question, isn't it?

  272. How can we know the way?

  273. If we don't even know the destination,

  274. how can we know the way?

  275. I actually left home on Monday evening

  276. and I've been sort of slowly

  277. making my way up the country

  278. and I am so thankful for Google Maps.

  279. And I have had my phone out numerous times.

  280. But I found the way to get here.

  281. How?

  282. Because every time I put in the destination.

  283. And then Google tells me the way

  284. because I can put in the destination.

  285. But what if you don't even know the destination?

  286. How can you possibly find the way

  287. if you don't know the destination?

  288. And maybe this is the question

  289. that actually haunts you.

  290. It's the troubling question

  291. that keeps you awake at night

  292. or gnaws away at you

  293. when you're not distracted by other things.

  294. What is the destination?

  295. Well, what is life all about?

  296. In connection with the mission

  297. coming up next year,

  298. we've done some national polling

  299. as a passion for life.

  300. And do you know what we found?

  301. We found that one in three people said

  302. that what is missing from their lives

  303. is purpose.

  304. But one in three people said

  305. they don't really know

  306. what their lives are for.

  307. What's the purpose?

  308. What's the destination?

  309. Where should I be trying to get to?

  310. And if I can't even answer those questions

  311. about the destination,

  312. then how can I possibly know the way?

  313. So it's a great question, isn't it?

  314. It's a vital question,

  315. but it's also a troubling question.

  316. How can we know the way?

  317. And how thankful we should be

  318. here today for Thomas

  319. for asking the question

  320. because it draws forth from Jesus

  321. this great I am saying,

  322. which consists of a sensational affirmation

  323. followed by a clarifying,

  324. an important clarifying negation.

  325. So this most sensational affirmation,

  326. I am the way

  327. and the truth and the life.

  328. So let's focus on the first part of that

  329. and then I'll say a little bit

  330. about the second and third part.

  331. I am the way.

  332. Not simply,

  333. let me explain the way.

  334. Not even let me point the way.

  335. Not even let me show you the way.

  336. You know,

  337. I talked about my parents-in-law

  338. moving down to Cornwall

  339. and when they were moving in,

  340. my wife traveled down there

  341. as a sort of surprise visit

  342. and to help them move in

  343. and she had to change trains in Plymouth

  344. and she got talking to somebody

  345. and she missed her train.

  346. Can't possibly imagine that happening

  347. but somehow it happened.

  348. Talking to somebody,

  349. misses her train,

  350. she's in a panic.

  351. How is she going to get to her destination?

  352. And she goes to the ticket office

  353. and the lady in the ticket office

  354. is so kind to her

  355. because she doesn't just tell her

  356. where the next train is

  357. and which platform.

  358. She leaves her ticket office

  359. and she shows my wife the way.

  360. Takes her,

  361. leads her to the platform.

  362. But Jesus is saying more than,

  363. he's not just saying

  364. I'll show you the way.

  365. No, he says I am the way.

  366. I am the way.

  367. The way to where?

  368. Well, the way to the Father.

  369. Not simply to the Father's house

  370. in the far off the future

  371. but the way to the Father

  372. in the present

  373. as the end of verse 6

  374. will make clear for us.

  375. Jesus speaks of coming,

  376. present tense,

  377. to the Father.

  378. In fact, of course,

  379. again, I think this will make sense to you.

  380. We cannot expect

  381. to go to the Father's house then

  382. if we do not come to the Father now.

  383. We can't expect to live

  384. our whole lives

  385. estranged from the Father,

  386. distant from the Father,

  387. hostile even to the Father,

  388. pushing him away

  389. and then suddenly,

  390. somehow,

  391. be welcomed into his house

  392. at the end.

  393. Then we need to come

  394. to the Father now.

  395. The destination

  396. that matters now

  397. and matters most

  398. is not a place

  399. but a relationship.

  400. We need a way

  401. to the Father,

  402. to knowing the God

  403. who created us

  404. and to knowing him

  405. as our Father.

  406. and we are lost

  407. until we find that way.

  408. And Jesus says,

  409. I am the way.

  410. And what good news

  411. that is.

  412. Let me just explain

  413. why I think it's good news.

  414. First,

  415. because it means

  416. the way is knowable

  417. and not impossible to find.

  418. because Jesus

  419. has come to us

  420. and you can meet Jesus

  421. this very morning

  422. in the pages of Scripture.

  423. Secondly,

  424. it's good news

  425. because the way

  426. is a person

  427. for us

  428. to trust.

  429. Not a philosophy

  430. for us to get

  431. our heads around.

  432. Now,

  433. some of us are great

  434. at getting our heads

  435. around big ideas.

  436. Some of us just don't

  437. get our heads around

  438. big ideas.

  439. But the way

  440. is not a philosophy

  441. you've got to get hold of.

  442. No,

  443. it's a person to trust

  444. and we can all

  445. trust a person.

  446. Even the children

  447. who've gone out

  448. to their groups

  449. can trust a person.

  450. They can trust Jesus

  451. and so they can know

  452. the way.

  453. And then thirdly,

  454. the way is a provision

  455. that is made for us

  456. and it's not a performance

  457. that is demanded

  458. of us.

  459. So I guess

  460. that some of you

  461. in this room

  462. have just started uni.

  463. How did you get to uni?

  464. How did you secure

  465. your place?

  466. You had to perform.

  467. You can't get into university

  468. without performing,

  469. getting the grades.

  470. It's pretty fair

  471. to say that Europe

  472. is going to win

  473. the Ryder Cup.

  474. How?

  475. By their performance.

  476. And that's what religion is.

  477. religion is a performance

  478. that is demanded of us.

  479. But the way to the Father

  480. is not any form of religion.

  481. It's not a way

  482. for us to walk.

  483. It's not a list of rules

  484. for us to follow.

  485. It's not a set of meditation

  486. techniques for us to master.

  487. we are relieved of all such

  488. crushing burdens.

  489. Because the way

  490. is a person.

  491. The way is a person

  492. that we can know

  493. and love

  494. and trust.

  495. And when we simply

  496. know and trust

  497. Jesus,

  498. he becomes our way

  499. to the Father.

  500. remember

  501. what he said earlier?

  502. Don't let your hearts

  503. be troubled.

  504. Trust in God.

  505. Trust also in me.

  506. That's all he's calling us

  507. to do,

  508. to trust in him.

  509. And as we trust in him,

  510. he becomes the way

  511. for us.

  512. But

  513. how can he

  514. possibly

  515. be qualified

  516. to make

  517. such a claim?

  518. What qualifies

  519. Jesus to be the way?

  520. Well,

  521. it's a matter

  522. both of who he is

  523. and what he has done.

  524. So we've already

  525. thought about

  526. what he has done

  527. to be the way.

  528. Going to the cross,

  529. taking away our sin

  530. so that nothing

  531. should stand between us

  532. and the Father.

  533. Becoming the way

  534. to the Father

  535. through his death.

  536. But it's not only

  537. what he's done,

  538. it's also who he is.

  539. He is the way

  540. because in his very being

  541. he is one

  542. with the Father.

  543. Did you pick

  544. that up

  545. from the reading?

  546. That he is

  547. in the closest

  548. possible relationship

  549. with the Father.

  550. So in answer

  551. to Philip's request,

  552. Lord,

  553. show us the Father,

  554. Jesus says,

  555. don't you get it,

  556. Philip?

  557. I am in the Father

  558. and the Father

  559. is in me

  560. and whoever

  561. has seen me

  562. has seen the Father.

  563. In other words,

  564. Jesus is the fullest

  565. possible revelation

  566. of God.

  567. But you might ask,

  568. how can we see

  569. the Father

  570. since Jesus

  571. is not visibly

  572. present to us

  573. as he was

  574. for his disciples?

  575. Well,

  576. the answer lies

  577. in the second half

  578. of verse 10.

  579. That's why we read

  580. that far in our reading.

  581. He says,

  582. the words I say to you

  583. I do not speak

  584. on my own authority.

  585. Rather,

  586. it is the Father

  587. living in me

  588. who is doing

  589. his work.

  590. Do you see the

  591. emphasis on his words?

  592. And that when Jesus

  593. speaks,

  594. it is the Father

  595. working.

  596. It is the Father

  597. working to make

  598. himself known

  599. through the Son.

  600. It is the Father

  601. speaking to us

  602. through the Son,

  603. revealing himself

  604. to us

  605. through the Son.

  606. And so Jesus'

  607. words

  608. are what matters.

  609. You see,

  610. I can't know you

  611. simply by looking

  612. at you,

  613. can I?

  614. I could just

  615. sort of stand here

  616. for half an hour

  617. just looking at you

  618. and really at the end

  619. of that not feel

  620. I know you

  621. any better.

  622. But if after service

  623. we have a conversation

  624. and you use words

  625. and you speak to me

  626. and tell me about yourself,

  627. then I will begin

  628. to feel I'm beginning

  629. to know you.

  630. And if I want to know you,

  631. I need to listen

  632. to what you say.

  633. And Jesus' words

  634. paint the clearest,

  635. fullest,

  636. most understandable

  637. revelation and portrait

  638. of the Father

  639. that we could have.

  640. And so we see the Father

  641. by listening to the Son.

  642. And so he's fully qualified

  643. to be the way.

  644. And there are two

  645. essential aspects

  646. that first he makes

  647. God known to us

  648. by his work of revelation

  649. and second he clears

  650. the way for us

  651. to know God

  652. by his work of redemption.

  653. That's paying the price

  654. to set us free

  655. from our sins

  656. by dying for us

  657. on the cross.

  658. In other words,

  659. he both makes God known

  660. and makes God knowable.

  661. And then he simply

  662. expands further

  663. on those two aspects

  664. of his being the way

  665. in the rest

  666. of this stupendous

  667. declaration as he goes

  668. on to say,

  669. I am the truth.

  670. Again, he does not merely

  671. speak the truth,

  672. he embodies the truth.

  673. Though all the truth

  674. of God resides in Jesus

  675. and is communicated

  676. to us through him.

  677. And so as the way

  678. to the Father,

  679. he shares with us

  680. the knowledge of God.

  681. And we're not left

  682. in ignorance,

  683. left blindly trusting

  684. a God we do not know.

  685. No, we come to know

  686. the truth concerning God

  687. by knowing Jesus

  688. and listening to his word.

  689. If you want to know

  690. the truth,

  691. you have to know Jesus.

  692. That's the bottom line.

  693. And then he says,

  694. I am the life.

  695. So as the way

  696. to the Father,

  697. he shares with us

  698. not only the knowledge

  699. of God,

  700. but amazingly,

  701. he shares with us

  702. the life of God.

  703. So John's gospel,

  704. this testimony to Jesus,

  705. John,

  706. who walked the roads

  707. of Israel with Jesus,

  708. listened to Jesus,

  709. saw Jesus,

  710. touched Jesus,

  711. wrote his testimony

  712. to the life of Jesus

  713. and all that he said

  714. and did for us.

  715. John's gospel

  716. is full of the promise

  717. of eternal life.

  718. But how does Jesus

  719. give us eternal life?

  720. Not merely by pointing

  721. the way to life,

  722. not simply by telling us

  723. where to find life,

  724. but by giving himself.

  725. And he both gives himself

  726. for us

  727. and he gives himself

  728. to us.

  729. First,

  730. he gives himself

  731. for us on the cross,

  732. taking our place

  733. under the wrath of God,

  734. bearing the penalty

  735. for our sins

  736. so that penalty of death

  737. should be lifted from us

  738. and then he gives himself

  739. to us

  740. by giving us

  741. his spirit.

  742. so the life

  743. that is in him

  744. should flow in us,

  745. he says,

  746. like living waters.

  747. So as the truth,

  748. he's able to take away

  749. the darkness

  750. of our minds

  751. and give us understanding

  752. and as the life,

  753. he's able to take away

  754. the deadness

  755. of our souls

  756. and give us life.

  757. And then he says to us,

  758. I am the way

  759. and the truth

  760. and the life.

  761. And we can come

  762. to the Father

  763. through him.

  764. And as we come

  765. to the Father

  766. through him,

  767. we receive both

  768. the truth of God

  769. and the life of God.

  770. That's a most

  771. stupendous affirmation,

  772. isn't it?

  773. In answer

  774. to a troubling question.

  775. Something to pause

  776. and marvel at.

  777. But Jesus immediately

  778. adds a clarifying

  779. negation.

  780. He says,

  781. no one comes

  782. to the Father

  783. except through me.

  784. This negation

  785. brings great clarity.

  786. It clarifies

  787. that Jesus

  788. is not just

  789. a way,

  790. that he is

  791. the way.

  792. because he says,

  793. no one

  794. comes to the Father

  795. except through me.

  796. No special cases,

  797. no exemption,

  798. no one

  799. comes to the Father

  800. except through me.

  801. You come

  802. to the Father

  803. through Jesus

  804. or you do not

  805. come at all.

  806. And it's this negation

  807. that makes the word

  808. such a controversial

  809. answer to the

  810. troubling question,

  811. how can we know

  812. the way?

  813. And I just

  814. imagine

  815. that Graham,

  816. your pastor,

  817. is invited

  818. to some

  819. civic event

  820. in Edinburgh

  821. city centre

  822. with community

  823. leaders from

  824. many different

  825. faiths

  826. and he's asked

  827. to say a few

  828. words about

  829. his faith

  830. and so he

  831. begins to read

  832. these words

  833. of Jesus.

  834. Maybe there

  835. are murmurs

  836. of admiration

  837. as he reads,

  838. I am the way,

  839. the truth,

  840. and the life.

  841. What stirring

  842. words from

  843. the lips

  844. of Jesus

  845. but then

  846. he goes on

  847. and he

  848. completes

  849. the reading,

  850. no one

  851. comes to

  852. the Father

  853. except

  854. through me.

  855. An awkward

  856. silence follows

  857. because no one

  858. can fail to

  859. recognise the

  860. challenge of

  861. the negative.

  862. those few

  863. words are a

  864. challenge to

  865. all of the

  866. world's

  867. religions,

  868. to all of

  869. their teachings,

  870. to all of

  871. their techniques,

  872. to all of

  873. their rules,

  874. their stories,

  875. the words of

  876. their gurus

  877. and prophets

  878. and it's saying

  879. that none of

  880. them will bring

  881. anyone to

  882. God.

  883. that's what

  884. they claim

  885. they will

  886. do but

  887. they won't.

  888. Jesus is

  889. saying no

  890. one comes

  891. to the

  892. Father by

  893. them.

  894. That in

  895. fact by

  896. pointing people

  897. away from

  898. Jesus,

  899. by saying,

  900. claiming there

  901. are other

  902. ways,

  903. that far

  904. from bringing

  905. people to

  906. God,

  907. they must

  908. inevitably

  909. lead people

  910. away from

  911. God,

  912. away from

  913. the truth,

  914. away from

  915. life.

  916. There are

  917. many paths

  918. away from

  919. God but

  920. only one

  921. way to

  922. God and

  923. his name

  924. is Jesus.

  925. And this

  926. negative is

  927. the challenge

  928. that we face

  929. as we think

  930. about bearing

  931. witness to

  932. the Lord

  933. Jesus.

  934. Because

  935. we might be

  936. delighted to

  937. talk about

  938. Jesus being

  939. a way,

  940. but we're

  941. fearful of

  942. talking about

  943. Jesus being

  944. the way,

  945. of urging

  946. people to

  947. come to

  948. Jesus because

  949. there's no

  950. other way.

  951. Our friends

  952. might be

  953. interested as

  954. we talk about

  955. Jesus being

  956. a way,

  957. about truth

  958. and life

  959. being found

  960. in Jesus,

  961. but when we

  962. tell them

  963. there's no

  964. other way,

  965. well that's

  966. when the

  967. conversation can

  968. get heated,

  969. or at least

  970. we anticipate,

  971. we fear it

  972. will get

  973. heated,

  974. so maybe we

  975. never start the

  976. conversation in the

  977. first place.

  978. We fear the

  979. pushback.

  980. So first we

  981. need to

  982. overcome our

  983. fear of

  984. controversy by

  985. trusting in

  986. God.

  987. But we also

  988. need to feel

  989. for ourselves

  990. the forceful

  991. weight of

  992. this negative.

  993. And I

  994. know for my

  995. own part

  996. that this

  997. negative

  998. challenges both

  999. my reluctance

  1000. to tell people

  1001. the good news

  1002. of the Lord

  1003. Jesus and

  1004. my complacency

  1005. about their

  1006. urgent and

  1007. vital need

  1008. to hear this

  1009. news.

  1010. There is no

  1011. room for

  1012. complacency.

  1013. My neighbours

  1014. who do not

  1015. know Jesus,

  1016. they really

  1017. do not know

  1018. the way.

  1019. And they

  1020. can't come to

  1021. the Father if

  1022. they don't know

  1023. the way.

  1024. And they

  1025. really are

  1026. lost.

  1027. And they

  1028. really are

  1029. ignorant to

  1030. the truth.

  1031. And they

  1032. are truly

  1033. perishing in

  1034. their sins

  1035. without life.

  1036. And they

  1037. will die in

  1038. their sins if

  1039. they do not

  1040. come to the

  1041. Father through

  1042. Jesus.

  1043. And the

  1044. same goes for

  1045. every single

  1046. person we

  1047. meet who does

  1048. not know

  1049. Jesus.

  1050. They do not

  1051. know the way.

  1052. They cannot

  1053. know the way if

  1054. they don't

  1055. know him.

  1056. and I

  1057. might be the

  1058. only Christian

  1059. they know

  1060. who can

  1061. tell them

  1062. about him.

  1063. And I'm

  1064. not trying to

  1065. give you a

  1066. guilt trip.

  1067. I'm just

  1068. trying to help

  1069. all of us in

  1070. this room,

  1071. myself included,

  1072. just to feel the

  1073. weight of that

  1074. and not be

  1075. complacent.

  1076. And I need

  1077. to ask the

  1078. Father to

  1079. help me.

  1080. And I need

  1081. to rely on

  1082. the Spirit

  1083. that Jesus

  1084. has given me.

  1085. And I need

  1086. to overcome

  1087. my reluctance

  1088. and my

  1089. complacency and

  1090. I need to

  1091. tell them

  1092. about Jesus

  1093. the Son.

  1094. Because I

  1095. know the

  1096. way and

  1097. they don't.

  1098. Just imagine

  1099. that my wife

  1100. had gone to

  1101. that person

  1102. who worked

  1103. in the

  1104. ticket office

  1105. at Plymouth

  1106. Station and

  1107. says,

  1108. what's the

  1109. way for me

  1110. to get where

  1111. I'm going?

  1112. And she

  1113. said,

  1114. well I know

  1115. but I'm

  1116. not going to

  1117. tell you.

  1118. I know

  1119. the way

  1120. and they

  1121. don't.

  1122. Do I

  1123. have enough

  1124. love to

  1125. tell them

  1126. the way

  1127. to the

  1128. Father?

  1129. Where to

  1130. find truth

  1131. and life?

  1132. The good

  1133. news of

  1134. the Lord

  1135. Jesus is

  1136. the good

  1137. news of

  1138. the way

  1139. to God.

  1140. The God

  1141. who created

  1142. all things,

  1143. the God

  1144. who gave

  1145. us life

  1146. and breath

  1147. and all

  1148. that we

  1149. have,

  1150. is the

  1151. good news

  1152. of the

  1153. way

  1154. to God

  1155. through

  1156. Jesus

  1157. the

  1158. Son.

  1159. It's

  1160. the way

  1161. to life,

  1162. it's the

  1163. way to

  1164. the truth,

  1165. it's the

  1166. way home.

  1167. And through

  1168. all of our

  1169. everyday evangelism

  1170. and through a

  1171. passion for life

  1172. we want to

  1173. encourage each

  1174. other and

  1175. we want to

  1176. help each

  1177. other and

  1178. urge each

  1179. other to

  1180. declare this

  1181. good news

  1182. to those

  1183. to those

  1184. that God

  1185. puts in

  1186. our lives.

  1187. But he

  1188. is the

  1189. way,

  1190. he is the

  1191. truth,

  1192. he is the

  1193. life.

  1194. That's why

  1195. we are

  1196. devoted to

  1197. Jesus,

  1198. that's why

  1199. we need to

  1200. tell other

  1201. people about

  1202. him.

  1203. Amen.
