  1. The topic that I was given is, have you ever wondered why we long for happiness?

  2. ! Have you ever wondered why we long for happiness?

  3. And already you may be wondering what I'm going to say about this.

  4. What does the Bible have to say about happiness?

  5. And it's a fairly intricate and complex subject for a Sunday evening.

  6. And as I was preparing this week, I had to flow this week, so I wasn't in the best of conditions.

  7. And as I was lying in my bed with my head pounding and my body aching,

  8. I thought, well, this is a topic that is not one that I want to be thinking about.

  9. How do I long for happiness? I was certainly longing for happiness this week.

  10. But as I went down the rabbit hole, as it were, of what the Bible says about happiness,

  11. that you realize it's actually not a rabbit hole, it's a whole warren.

  12. There's a word from worship down, if you can remember that from your high school days.

  13. It's a whole warren about what the Bible says about happiness.

  14. Now, I've chosen the passage that we have read tonight from Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  15. And you might find, you might have already picked up on the clue about where we're going with this.

  16. But let me just dive into a question for you.

  17. So, have you ever wondered why we long for happiness?

  18. Now, Nelson, not Samuel, but Nelson Rockefeller once asked, he said this, they asked him this,

  19. how much money does it take to make a person happy?

  20. And I'm sure this has actually been put on the screen here in Brunswick before.

  21. But his answer famously was this, just a little bit more.

  22. And I think this frank response gives us an insight into the human soul.

  23. We are tempted to think that we'd be happy with just a little bit more.

  24. But I think actually we'd be tempted to admit that for many of us, it's actually going to be a lot more to make us happy if we were to truly answer that question.

  25. Let me share another rather shameful and shallow but true story of a conversation that I had over 20 years ago.

  26. So, I was in a group of friends, Christian friends, and we were talking salaries.

  27. I don't know if that's a taboo subject, but we were talking salaries.

  28. And I had just come from a very meagre salary.

  29. I was earning 5,000 pounds, 100 pounds a week.

  30. And I sat in a new job and I was earning 10,000 pounds.

  31. And I said, in that company, I said, you know what, I think I'd be comfortable if I was earning 30,000 pounds.

  32. And I was kind of mocked at the time because the average age, believe it or not, in 2004, the average wage was 22,000 pounds.

  33. That's the average wage in the UK.

  34. And here was me saying, well, I'd be comfortable if I earned 30,000 pounds.

  35. Well, it's not long.

  36. 30,000 pounds comes and goes and you realise that maybe you need double or triple that.

  37. And then that comes and goes and, well, you could keep going down that route, right?

  38. And that is probably a shameful story for me, just to repeat that.

  39. But that was a conversation that we had over 20 years ago.

  40. But what would it make, what would it take to make you happy?

  41. You see, I don't think the question of do you want to be happy is a difficult question for us to answer.

  42. It's a self-answering question in a sense.

  43. But the more tricky question is this.

  44. What would it take to make you happy?

  45. You know, the lie, the lie, I would be happy if.

  46. And it's not really a new thing, is it?

  47. It's the same lie that the serpent whispered to Eve in the garden saying, yes, you know, you would be happy if you ate off that forbidden fruit.

  48. And it's the same empty lies that he uses today.

  49. You know, I'd be happy if I had a better job.

  50. I'd be happy if I had more money.

  51. I'd be happy if I had a bigger house.

  52. I'd be happy if I had a partner.

  53. Or I'd be happy if that partner treated me better.

  54. I might be happy if I had a different partner.

  55. I might be happy if I had a child.

  56. Maybe I've had two children.

  57. You know, and it's, I would be happy if.

  58. And it is always just out of reach.

  59. You know, we humans always seem to think that we want what we cannot actually have.

  60. Though in many cases, in many senses, we've actually already got what we wanted.

  61. But our, our, our, I'd be happy if moves, the goalpost moves very, very quickly.

  62. You know, that's true with jobs.

  63. It's true with houses.

  64. It's true with talents.

  65. And as I say, maybe even very often with spouses.

  66. And I shouldn't say that in a Christian context.

  67. But if we want to look at this question from a worldly point of view, then that would be the case.

  68. You know, the job never seems to be enough.

  69. The ideal job just seems to be slightly out of our grasp.

  70. Or it is just not available.

  71. You know, the house never seems to be big enough.

  72. Or not in the right location.

  73. Or it's not quite one that we want.

  74. We might recognise even the talents that we've been given.

  75. And that we have.

  76. But there's just this niggling envy about somebody else's abilities.

  77. And you just need to look at divorce rates in this country to notice that there is always something that we're looking for more in marriage.

  78. And that is quite a sad place to be.

  79. You know, the problem is made worse, I think, by the fact that we think that if we had the right job or the right house or the right skills or the right partner, then we'd be happy and content.

  80. But these things are always just out of our reach.

  81. And so is contentment.

  82. Or so the world's wisdom would have us believe.

  83. The search for happiness based on our circumstances in life creates this restlessness and this discontent in our souls.

  84. And that brought me on to thinking about this passage that we read tonight.

  85. And I'm just going to reread it because you might just see where we're going to go with this.

  86. And in verse 10 it says this,

  87. I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me.

  88. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity.

  89. Not that I'm speaking of being in need.

  90. For I have learned in whatever circumstance I am to be content.

  91. I know how to be brought low.

  92. And I know how to abound.

  93. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.

  94. And I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

  95. Well that's the Apostle Paul.

  96. He testifies that he has learned to be content in any and every circumstance.

  97. His is not a constant search for the right circumstances that will bring him happiness.

  98. He is content wherever he is.

  99. But that's not the position of so many in the world today.

  100. And it's sadly so of many Christians too.

  101. I want to share with you a quote of C.S. Lewis.

  102. And he says this,

  103. If I find myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy,

  104. the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.

  105. And I know that that has been on the screen downstairs before.

  106. Or it's certainly a quote that many of us will have heard.

  107. You see I think this is the crux of the matter.

  108. You know when we preach the gospel to the lost,

  109. we tell them that they have a God-shaped hole in their lives.

  110. That there's only one who can save them from themselves,

  111. from their sin and from a certain eternal death.

  112. And that is Jesus.

  113. And yet Jesus is not only the answer to man's sin problem,

  114. but Jesus is the answer to tonight's question as well.

  115. You see, Paul isn't some kind of self-help guru

  116. who's taught himself to be content for being contentedness,

  117. or for being content's sake.

  118. So that he might be able to say that he's happy

  119. in any and every circumstance that he finds himself in.

  120. No, Paul is pretty clear that it is Christ within him

  121. that has enabled them to learn to be this way.

  122. And I use that word learn because that is a word that we find in here.

  123. And Paul uses that in his passage in verse 11 there,

  124. for I have learned this contentment.

  125. You know, Paul is pretty clear that it is Christ in him

  126. that has enabled them to be that way.

  127. There's another quote that Rachel did contribute.

  128. I will give her that.

  129. So there's another quote that I'll use tonight as well.

  130. It's from Elizabeth Elliott.

  131. And I'm sure some of you guys will have read this as well.

  132. And it says this,

  133. The secret is Christ in me.

  134. Not me in a different set of circumstances.

  135. And she is speaking on the same line.

  136. She's speaking about being content as well.

  137. You know, I could fill, any of us could fill pages and pages

  138. of I would be happy if.

  139. But here's the truth.

  140. Our ultimate happiness will only be found

  141. in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

  142. You know, the answer to our question about why we long for happiness.

  143. Well, tonight we're going to focus on the word happy.

  144. But the adjective, or rather the noun,

  145. the word longing is maybe where the root of the question lies.

  146. Why do we long for happiness?

  147. And I don't think that I'd probably need to tell you this,

  148. but it is just good to reaffirm it to ourselves tonight.

  149. But we are created in the image of God.

  150. God says that.

  151. He says, let's make man in our own image.

  152. And God wants to have a relationship with us.

  153. In fact, there's another verse in Scripture that would say

  154. that the dwelling place of God is with man.

  155. But our sin has separated us from him.

  156. And so in the very heart of our souls lies this void

  157. that we as humans so desperately want to fill.

  158. Now, I've kind of skipped from the word happiness

  159. to being content without really covering it.

  160. And as I was going through this, there's a lot of verses.

  161. In fact, you'd be amazed.

  162. There are thousands of verses that covers the words

  163. that we might associate with happiness.

  164. And some of them will be joy, or joyful, or cheerful,

  165. or happy, or pleased, or sometimes the word merry.

  166. Okay.

  167. And they each have a slightly different aspect to them,

  168. whether it is something that is caused by a set of circumstances,

  169. or whether it's coming from within.

  170. Or I'll give you a verse that I'm going to read just now.

  171. It's in Esther chapter 5.

    Esther 5 chapter mention

  172. And it's not one that we should take any lessons for.

  173. But it's this.

  174. It says,

  175. So not every time that we come across a word about joyful,

  176. or gladness, or to be glad,

  177. it's going to be always in a positive context.

  178. Because, well, if you read the story of Esther,

  179. you'll find out that Haman's so-called happiness was very short-lived.

  180. But it is interesting when you start to just look at where all the words,

  181. and you just need to read through Paul's letters,

  182. as we've read Philippians, and as we're going through Galatians,

  183. every time the word rejoice, or joy, or pleasure, or delight,

  184. that comes up in Scripture.

  185. And literally, there are thousands and thousands of verses

  186. that you could read.

  187. And as I say, as you start, as I was going through this in the week,

  188. there are so many different avenues that we could take tonight

  189. to think about why we long for happiness.

  190. And what does happiness really mean?

  191. And where does it come from?

  192. And you could spend hours and hours on it.

  193. I actually hope that you go away and you start to maybe,

  194. if you highlight your Bible, you may even just pick up on this,

  195. if you've got a Bible that you do that with.

  196. But as you start to read through and you start to look for those words,

  197. I mean, even just on the page that we've just read there in Philippians,

  198. you'll see that word numerous times in each of the verses about Paul's joy

  199. and his rejoicing, and the fact that he encourages other people to rejoice.

  200. So seeking for happiness and longing for happiness

  201. really is because we are made for that.

  202. We were made by God.

  203. We have got a God-shaped hole in our lives

  204. because we have rebelled against him,

  205. and man is desperately trying to fill it with so many other things.

  206. And yet, if we want to know what lasting joy looks like,

  207. then we'll come to Scripture.

  208. And I want to think about that over just five points tonight.

  209. So we'll be fairly brief, but there's five points that I want to think about.

  210. And that is out of so, so many points that we could have.

  211. The first one I want to think about is the source of happiness.

  212. What is the source of happiness?

  213. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to have a quick look

  214. at either a worldly type of wisdom and then what the Bible says,

  215. or we'll have a look at what the Bible says,

  216. and then we'll have a look at what the world would say.

  217. You know, modern culture would say that the source of happiness

  218. is an external source, and it's emotional.

  219. You know, happiness is often seen as a feeling or a state of satisfaction,

  220. and it's dependent on our achievements or our pleasure,

  221. our comfort, our self-expression.

  222. And in that kind of wisdom, you know, happiness is temporary,

  223. and it's easily lost when our circumstances change.

  224. And I think if you just think about the world today,

  225. you just see that you don't have to necessarily...

  226. In fact, you can pick up any newspaper and see that,

  227. that in circumstances, people, happiness is either made or broken,

  228. and that is the world's wisdom.

  229. But when we come to the Bible,

  230. we see that the Bible would teach us that happiness is internal.

  231. I want to use that word guardedly, but I'll explain what I mean.

  232. And it's not only internal, but it's spiritual.

  233. You know, true happiness.

  234. And often, when we come to Scripture,

  235. we see that word used as joy or blessedness

  236. comes from a relationship with God, trusting Him.

  237. It comes from gratitude, not from external circumstances.

  238. You know, it's described in Scripture as something that is stable,

  239. something that is steadfast, that is enduring,

  240. and something that we can have even in suffering.

  241. Philippians 4 and 4, if we just looked earlier in our chapter,

  242. it says this,

  243. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  244. True happiness comes from God, not from our circumstances.

  245. Derek didn't know this, but Psalm 16,

  246. the verse that Derek quoted tonight, said this,

  247. You make known to me the path of life.

  248. In your presence, there is fullness of joy.

  249. At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

  250. You know, real joy is found in God's presence,

  251. not in worldless success or in comfort.

  252. You know, Jesus teaching on happiness.

  253. It equals this.

  254. You come to Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  255. and we're dealing with the Beatitudes.

  256. And each of the Beatitudes begins with blessed are.

  257. Now, that word blessed,

  258. it can also be a word that's translated as happy, satisfied.

  259. But blessed are the poor in spirit,

  260. those who mourn, those who make,

  261. those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.

  262. Jesus redefines happiness as being connected with

  263. a spiritual quality,

  264. not an external success.

  265. You know, the key difference between a biblical,

  266. what the Bible says about happiness

  267. and what the world says about happiness

  268. is this, that biblical happiness is rooted

  269. in God's presence.

  270. Now, that might not seem apparent on the face of it,

  271. but there are a few verses that I want to leave further on.

  272. When you cast your mind back,

  273. I want you to think about this.

  274. What is the source of our happiness?

  275. What is the source of biblical happiness?

  276. And it is found in God's presence.

  277. Not what the world would say happiness is found in,

  278. which is often rooted in our personal circumstances

  279. that are so prone to change.

  280. So, the first one I want to think about

  281. is just the source of happiness.

  282. The second thing I want to think about tonight

  283. is just life goals.

  284. So, what is the goal of life?

  285. What are our life goals?

  286. You know, the modern view is this,

  287. that happiness is the primary goal in life.

  288. Do whatever makes you happy.

  289. And it's associated with self-fulfillment

  290. and personal freedom.

  291. You just need to look at what comes across

  292. our television screens or your X feed

  293. and you'll see that people just do what they like

  294. because they think it will bring them

  295. some source of happiness.

  296. The Bible tells us, though,

  297. that happiness is not our ultimate goal.

  298. It actually says this,

  299. it says that happiness is a by-product

  300. of living righteously and loving God

  301. and, by extension, loving others.

  302. Matthew 6, verse 33 says this,

    Matthew 6:33

  303. Seek ye first the kingdom of God

  304. and all these things will be added to you.

  305. Which is contrary to what the world would tell us

  306. about happiness and that happiness is not the ultimate goal,

  307. but it is a by-product.

  308. You know, obedience to God brings happiness.

  309. We probably know that in our own lives.

  310. Psalm chapter 1, verses 1 and 2 said this,

    Psalms 1:1

  311. Blessed, there's that word blessed again.

  312. That can be translated as happy.

  313. But blessed is the man who does not walk

  314. in the counsel of the wicked,

  315. but his delight, in verse 2,

  316. but his delight is in the law of the Lord

  317. and doing what God would have us to do.

  318. You know, it brings about this deep sense of well-being

  319. that comes from living according to God's ways.

  320. And there are so many scriptures

  321. that I could take you to tonight

  322. that would show you this,

  323. that if we did what the Bible said that we should do,

  324. we would probably avoid a lot of the circumstances

  325. that make us unhappy.

  326. You know, there's loads of choruses

  327. that we're going through my mind as we're preparing,

  328. but you remember that one that we used to sing,

  329. trust and obey, trust and obey.

  330. There's no other way but to be happy in Jesus,

  331. but to trust and obey.

  332. And obedience brings about this sense of well-being.

  333. And I'm using slightly different words,

  334. but you'll see how they're all connected

  335. to what we might just refer to

  336. as an umbrella term as happiness.

  337. So the key difference between what the Bible says

  338. and what the world would say

  339. is that the Bible would say that happiness

  340. is a fruit of godly living.

  341. But the kind of modern world would say

  342. that, you know, happiness is the purpose of life

  343. rather than the by-product.

  344. So we've thought about the source of happiness

  345. is in God's presence.

  346. God's presence itself brings about

  347. that deep, enduring joy and peace and rest

  348. as different words that you will see will come up

  349. in relation to happiness.

  350. And then second of all, life goals.

  351. So our life goal is not to be happy.

  352. Our life goal is to be obedient to God

  353. and the by-product of that is happiness.

  354. But I want to think about something

  355. a little bit more deeper than that.

  356. And it's this, what is happiness's relationship

  357. with suffering?

  358. Because life is not a bed of roses.

  359. And if you were ever in a Bible study

  360. with my granddad, he would say,

  361. well, I don't know why you call it a bed of roses

  362. because I wouldn't like to land in a bed of roses.

  363. But what is happiness's relationship to suffering?

  364. Well, the modern view would say this,

  365. that suffering is typically seen

  366. as an obstacle to happiness.

  367. It's something to be avoided or to be minimized.

  368. And happiness often means being free from pain

  369. or difficulty.

  370. Life is a breeze.

  371. That's what the world would have us think.

  372. But when we come to the Bible,

  373. we see that suffering can produce joy

  374. because it develops faith and character and hope.

  375. You just read about that in Romans chapter five.

  376. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings,

  377. knowing that suffering produces endurance

  378. and endurance produces character

  379. and character produces hope.

  380. And hope does not put us to shame

  381. because God's love has been poured into our hearts

  382. through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

  383. You'll see that some of the references

  384. that I've used will help us to just underline

  385. the point that I made earlier,

  386. that happiness is found in God's presence

  387. and God's presence comes to live

  388. within each and every child of God.

  389. You know, there's joy in trials.

  390. It's something that we don't often want to think about.

  391. But again, you come to James chapter one

  392. and it says this,

  393. count it all joy, my brothers,

  394. when you meet trials of various kinds,

  395. for you know that testing of your faith

  396. produces steadfastness.

  397. You know, the Bible acknowledges suffering,

  398. but it teaches that even trials

  399. can lead to deeper joy,

  400. deeper reliance on God.

  401. And as we are put through some of these trials

  402. of various kind,

  403. then the testing of our faith on God

  404. produces this steadfastness.

  405. And that is what, when we ask people,

  406. excuse me,

  407. why we long for happiness,

  408. we're not just longing for some kind of,

  409. some kind of merriment on a Friday night,

  410. but most people are looking for something

  411. that is deep and lasting and enduring.

  412. A peace, a rest, a happiness

  413. that carries them through life

  414. rather than bouncing from one weekend

  415. to the next.

  416. Again, we can come to 1 Thessalonians,

  417. reading chapter five,

  418. verses 16 to 18,

  419. and it says this,

  420. rejoice always,

  421. pray without ceasing,

  422. giving thanks in all circumstances.

  423. You know, trusting and thanking God,

  424. even in hardship or trial,

  425. leads to a lasting kind of joy.

  426. And that is so contrary to what the Bible,

  427. what the world would believe,

  428. which is this,

  429. that modern happiness usually requires

  430. the absence of these things,

  431. but yet biblical joy can exist

  432. through pain and hardship.

  433. Only on point three,

  434. and I hope they can last to the last two.

  435. The first point was about the source of happiness.

  436. The second point was on about the,

  437. you know,

  438. the goal of life.

  439. The third point was its relationship with suffering.

  440. The fourth point that I want to just cover briefly

  441. is around the focus.

  442. The focus,

  443. and this is around our focus,

  444. and what I'm thinking about here is,

  445. is our focus on ourselves,

  446. or is it on others?

  447. And when I say others,

  448. again,

  449. the chorus that we used to sing in Sunday school,

  450. if you were brought up in a,

  451. if you were brought up,

  452. going to Sunday school,

  453. you might have sang a song that says,

  454. Jai,

  455. so Jai for Jesus,

  456. Jai,

  457. O-I,

  458. Jai,

  459. O-I,

  460. this is what it means,

  461. Jesus first,

  462. yourself last,

  463. and others in between.

  464. They might not have sung that,

  465. but that was one that came to mind

  466. as I was thinking about this,

  467. but it's the focus on ourselves,

  468. or is it on others?

  469. You know,

  470. the Bible says this,

  471. that joy grows from,

  472. joy grows within us

  473. from loving and serving others.

  474. Happiness comes through

  475. humility and service.

  476. You read in Acts chapter 20,

    Acts 20:35

  477. verse 35,

  478. it says it is more blessed.

  479. That's that word,

  480. blessed again,

  481. it's more happy.

  482. People are,

  483. you're more satisfied to give

  484. than to receive.

  485. The modern view is this,

  486. that happiness is very self-centered.

  487. It's what we're taught in school,

  488. it's what we're taught on our TVs,

  489. it's how we've been conditioned,

  490. and it's very self-focused.

  491. It's about maximizing our own pleasure,

  492. our own comfort,

  493. our own success.

  494. However,

  495. I just want to slightly caveat that,

  496. because

  497. modern psychology would,

  498. as it kind of starts to align with scripture

  499. in a sense,

  500. because it supports

  501. what the Bible teaches

  502. around gratitude

  503. and purpose,

  504. and anybody who's been on

  505. any kind of mental health,

  506. whether you're in a

  507. line management position at work,

  508. and it's dealing with

  509. employees with mental health,

  510. or in other circumstances,

  511. and we've all been touched by this,

  512. you'll have heard of these things,

  513. about being grateful,

  514. and about journaling,

  515. and about serving other people,

  516. that makes us happy.

  517. So,

  518. actually,

  519. we've kind of come through,

  520. maybe like the last,

  521. I mean,

  522. for all times it's been the same,

  523. we're very much self-centered people,

  524. but some modern psychology

  525. would maybe affirm

  526. some of the things

  527. that the Bible would say,

  528. but they're not right

  529. because they're right enough themselves,

  530. they're right because they agree

  531. with what scripture says.

  532. So,

  533. maybe both nowadays

  534. the world's view

  535. and the biblical view

  536. are slightly aligned,

  537. but the Bible

  538. tells us that

  539. that

  540. is God's

  541. design for love,

  542. and

  543. love is demonstrated

  544. by serving others,

  545. by

  546. looking after others,

  547. by being selfless

  548. in a way,

  549. and

  550. you'll even

  551. see some of the rhetoric

  552. that came out of

  553. Turning Point USA

  554. after the death

  555. of Charlie Kirk,

  556. where that was very much

  557. his

  558. motto,

  559. which was

  560. faith and family

  561. and sacrifice

  562. and serving others,

  563. and I'm sure

  564. many of us have

  565. seen some of that

  566. recently

  567. is very much

  568. taking away

  569. focus from ourselves

  570. and putting on

  571. other people.

  572. You know,

  573. in the day

  574. in which we live,

  575. that is the way

  576. that we have been

  577. conditioned very much

  578. to focus on self,

  579. and we live in a day

  580. of comparison,

  581. you just need to

  582. flick through

  583. your Instagram feed

  584. for any length of time,

  585. and you're always comparing,

  586. and I've actually

  587. looked at some of yours

  588. this week,

  589. not that I want

  590. to compare,

  591. but you know,

  592. I wish I had

  593. the legs

  594. and the bikes

  595. that some people have,

  596. or I wish I'd been

  597. on the holiday

  598. that other people

  599. had,

  600. or whatever it is,

  601. that nice restaurant

  602. that you went to,

  603. you just compare

  604. what you've been doing

  605. to what somebody else

  606. has been doing.

  607. It's a natural thing

  608. that happens to us all,

  609. but we live in a world

  610. where comparison

  611. is really

  612. a dangerous,

  613. dangerous thing,

  614. and we start

  615. to compare what we have

  616. to what other people have,

  617. and I don't think

  618. anybody has been

  619. affected on this,

  620. not been affected

  621. by this,

  622. but it's certainly

  623. affected my family

  624. over the last few years

  625. where,

  626. and I want to say

  627. this very kindly,

  628. but setting aside

  629. the clinical

  630. and the medical issues

  631. that may be associated

  632. with this,

  633. a number of people

  634. in my family

  635. have taken their own lives

  636. in the last few years,

  637. and some of the,

  638. some of the things

  639. that they,

  640. and I'm going to use

  641. the word guilty of,

  642. but say that carefully

  643. and it's affected me

  644. rather than anyone else

  645. in these circumstances,

  646. but they were very

  647. self-absorbed.

  648. Now, as I say,

  649. set aside the clinical

  650. and the medical issues

  651. that may have surrounded

  652. some of these incidents,

  653. but they very much

  654. were focused on

  655. how they were different

  656. to other people,

  657. and it was,

  658. and it was,

  659. I'm saying,

  660. I use the word game,

  661. but it was a,

  662. it was a,

  663. it was a game of comparison

  664. in that sense,

  665. and it was a very dangerous

  666. and a disastrous outcome

  667. to be caught in that

  668. where you're always comparing

  669. and you always think

  670. that you don't have

  671. what other people have

  672. and you'd be happy

  673. if you had what they had,

  674. and it goes back

  675. to what we said

  676. at the beginning

  677. of this,

  678. this topic tonight

  679. that we,

  680. we think we would be happy

  681. if,

  682. and that can have

  683. disastrous,

  684. disastrous outcomes,

  685. and I'm sure

  686. that everybody will know

  687. people who have been

  688. affected by that,

  689. but I say that kindly

  690. because,

  691. as I say,

  692. that has affected

  693. our family

  694. in many ways

  695. over the last few years,

  696. but lastly,

  697. I just want to think

  698. about this,

  699. number five,

  700. and it's about duration,

  701. what is the duration

  702. of happiness?

  703. You know,

  704. I think we,

  705. in our world,

  706. we see people

  707. that bounce

  708. on a Monday morning,

  709. they are not happy,

  710. when you come

  711. midway through the week,

  712. they're a little bit

  713. more happy,

  714. and when it comes

  715. to a Friday afternoon,

  716. they're absolutely elated

  717. to get out the door

  718. at whatever time

  719. that they are skipping

  720. out slightly early,

  721. but then they just

  722. do it all again

  723. week after week,

  724. and they bounce

  725. through this,

  726. almost from a crisis

  727. to a crisis,

  728. and they turn to things

  729. to fill that void,

  730. and it never really

  731. fills the void,

  732. but happiness,

  733. what the Bible teaches

  734. this,

  735. happiness is something

  736. that is eternal

  737. and unchanging,

  738. I want to be careful

  739. when I say that,

  740. because what I mean

  741. by that is that

  742. it's anchored

  743. in God's promises

  744. and in eternal life.

  745. John chapter 16

    John 16:22

  746. verse 22 says this,

  747. no one will take

  748. your joy from you,

  749. and that is the lot

  750. for us as Christians,

  751. that is our lot,

  752. we can have

  753. a deep-rooted

  754. and a steadfast

  755. and a stable happy,

  756. a stable joy,

  757. a rest,

  758. a peace,

  759. I'll come on to

  760. some of these words

  761. in a little second,

  762. and it's not necessarily

  763. the circumstantial happiness

  764. that the world thinks

  765. is happiness,

  766. but it is something

  767. that is much more

  768. deep and meaningful,

  769. and as God gives us that,

  770. we find that that

  771. is amplified

  772. when we're in His presence

  773. and when His presence

  774. is in us.

  775. You know,

  776. as I say,

  777. the modern world view

  778. is this,

  779. that happiness

  780. is often temporary,

  781. it's a fleeting emotion,

  782. and it's tied

  783. to changing circumstance.

  784. Excuse me.

  785. So I guess the question

  786. is this,

  787. should we be happy?

  788. Well, actually,

  789. I've got a little

  790. curveball in here,

  791. right,

  792. but should we be happy

  793. if we are rebelling

  794. against God,

  795. right?

  796. Three people

  797. that I want to think about,

  798. two have definitely

  799. been rebelling,

  800. one hasn't,

  801. but remember

  802. the question

  803. that God asks Cain,

  804. and he says this,

  805. why are you angry?

  806. Why has your countenance

  807. fallen?

  808. And it's because

  809. he was trying to do things

  810. on his own way,

  811. how he thought

  812. he should live,

  813. rather than how

  814. God would have him.

  815. You then come to David,

  816. and the same question

  817. can be asked,

  818. you can read several Psalms,

  819. and you know,

  820. Psalm 13,

  821. 34,

  822. 51,

  823. different times

  824. where David

  825. has gone out,

  826. and he's rebelled

  827. against God,

  828. and he's committed adultery,

  829. and he's lied,

  830. and he's committed murder,

  831. and he poses the question

  832. about why the joy

  833. of his salvation,

  834. why the joy of the Lord,

  835. why just the joy

  836. that he should have

  837. within him

  838. has been removed from him,

  839. and he pleads with God

  840. that that might be restored,

  841. and some of these circumstances

  842. are very much

  843. David's own doing,

  844. some of them are

  845. other circumstances

  846. that David finds himself in,

  847. and he's away from Jerusalem,

  848. and we've covered that recently,

  849. and,

  850. but,

  851. the question about

  852. should we be,

  853. expect to be happy

  854. when we're rebelling

  855. against God,

  856. well,

  857. the fact is,

  858. if we are actively

  859. rebelling against God,

  860. if we're not living

  861. according to his word,

  862. if we're not obeying him,

  863. then we'll not know

  864. the joy of his presence

  865. in our life,

  866. we'll not know the joy

  867. of the salvation,

  868. and therefore,

  869. there should be

  870. some kind of trouble

  871. within us,

  872. there should be something

  873. that is restless within us,

  874. as we long for God

  875. to be part of our lives,

  876. to be in our lives,

  877. to be controlling,

  878. to be guiding,

  879. to be sustaining us,

  880. to be comforting us,

  881. and if we are,

  882. if we have chosen a life

  883. that is pushing God out,

  884. and we're actively sinning,

  885. then,

  886. then,

  887. maybe that,

  888. maybe that rest,

  889. and that peace

  890. that he affords

  891. might just be absent.

  892. I was also thinking

  893. about Mary Magdalene,

  894. she comes to the tomb

  895. on that morning,

  896. and she meets the angels,

  897. and they ask why

  898. that she has been crying,

  899. and she says this,

  900. they have taken my Lord.

  901. Again,

  902. the Lord was taken

  903. from her presence,

  904. and that's what had upset her,

  905. and that should upset us too.

  906. When the presence of the Lord

  907. is not with us,

  908. we should be,

  909. I would use the word troubled,

  910. you know what I mean by that?

  911. I don't think we should necessarily be,

  912. there's no despair,

  913. but certainly we should be like David,

  914. and we should be seeking

  915. to restore that,

  916. and a verse that I'll often use

  917. in 1 John,

  918. if we are faithful,

  919. if we confess our sins,

  920. he is faithful and just

  921. to forgive our sins,

  922. and to cleanse us

  923. from all unrighteousness,

  924. and our relationship

  925. is restored,

  926. and God's presence

  927. can come back in,

  928. and even though the Holy Spirit

  929. never believes a believer,

  930. once they are saved,

  931. we definitely experience

  932. the loss of the joy

  933. of the presence of the Lord,

  934. when we follow a path

  935. that is not in accordance

  936. with the scripture.

  937. Then sometimes other than that,

  938. just the normal cares of this life

  939. can get us down,

  940. and it comes down

  941. to the last three verses

  942. that I want to leave with us.

  943. One of my favourite verses

  944. that I used to,

  945. again,

  946. if you grew up in a Sunday school,

  947. you would remember this,

  948. in Matthew 11,

  949. the Lord Jesus says,

  950. come to me,

  951. all who labour

  952. and are heavy laden,

  953. and I will give you rest.

  954. And this word rest

  955. is associated with the word

  956. that we've been thinking about,

  957. about the happiness,

  958. that underlying joy

  959. and peace and rest

  960. that comes from the Lord Jesus.

  961. The Lord Jesus often also says,

  962. my peace I give to you,

  963. John 14,

  964. but the helper,

  965. the Holy Spirit,

  966. whom the Father will send

  967. in my name,

  968. he will teach you all things

  969. and bring to your remembrance

  970. all that I have said to you.

  971. Peace I leave with you,

  972. my peace I give to you,

  973. not as the world gives peace.

  974. Jesus is acknowledging

  975. that the world does give peace,

  976. does give happiness,

  977. but nothing that is lasting,

  978. nothing that is true,

  979. nothing that can compare

  980. to the joy and the peace

  981. and the rest

  982. that can come from him.

  983. He says,

  984. let not your hearts be troubled,

  985. neither let them be afraid.

  986. Which takes me to the beginning

  987. of that chapter in 14.

  988. It starts like this,

  989. let not your hearts be troubled.

  990. Believe in God,

  991. believe also in me.

  992. In my Father's house

  993. are many rooms,

  994. if it were not so,

  995. would I have told you

  996. that I go to prepare

  997. a place for you.

  998. And if I go and prepare

  999. a place for you,

  1000. I will come again

1001. and will take you to myself

  1002. that where I am,

  1003. you may be also.

  1004. You know,

  1005. in a sense,

  1006. true,

  1007. enduring,

  1008. godly,

  1009. God-honoring happiness

  1010. will only be ours

  1011. when we are removed

  1012. from this world

  1013. and we are present

  1014. with Christ.

1015. But we're given the ability

  1016. and the resources,

  1017. the Holy Spirit,

  1018. I've just read that

1019. in the last few chapters,

  1020. the last few

  1021. verse quotations there,

  1022. the resources

  1023. to be content

  1024. in this world

  1025. with what we have

1026. and with what we do.

1027. So I just want to ask tonight

  1028. that it might be

  1029. our desire

1030. that we may live lives

  1031. that encourage,

  1032. that challenge,

  1033. that support,

1034. that we pray for each other,

1035. that we become like Paul,

  1036. that we be contented

1037. in each and every circumstance

1038. that we find ourselves in

1039. and that we are not contented

1040. when we don't have that peace

  1041. and that presence

1042. that only God affords us

1043. when we come to him.

  1044. Now let us pray.

  1045. Heavenly Father,

1046. we come before you tonight.

1047. Thank you for this opportunity

1048. that we've had to think about

  1049. this subject of contentment.

  1050. Our Father,

  1051. we remember that Paul

  1052. would write to Timothy

  1053. that contentment

  1054. with godliness

  1055. is great gain.

  1056. Our Father,

1057. something to be sought after,

  1058. something to be treasured.

  1059. And our Father,

  1060. we thank you

1061. that you have given us

  1062. the ability

  1063. to experience

  1064. this contentedness

  1065. in our lives

1066. by sending your Holy Spirit

  1067. into our lives

  1068. to help us,

  1069. to guide us,

  1070. to keep us.

  1071. And our Father,

1072. as we have just considered

  1073. why we long

  1074. for happiness tonight,

  1075. our Father,

  1076. we just pray

  1077. that these scattered thoughts

  1078. may be helpful,

1079. that we might just think on them

  1080. and ponder them

1081. and that it might just help us

1082. to answer some of the questions

  1083. that our unbelieving friends

  1084. may have.

  1085. And even when,

  1086. Father,

  1087. we as your people

  1088. find ourselves

  1089. in times of difficulty,

  1090. that we just draw

  1091. close to you

  1092. for your comfort

  1093. and your care,

1094. that you may support us,

1095. that you may lead us

  1096. through the difficult

  1097. times of life.

  1098. And our Father,

  1099. we thank you

1100. that you have given us

  1101. this hope

  1102. that is within us,

1103. that we will one day

1104. go to be with you

1105. and that we will be like you

1106. for we will see you

  1107. as you are.

  1108. And our Father,

  1109. we thank you

  1110. that all of that

  1111. is promised to us

1112. in and through the person

  1113. of your Son,

  1114. the Lord Jesus.

  1115. And so,

  1116. our Father,

  1117. we just ask

  1118. that we might remember

  1119. what we have thought

  1120. about tonight.

  1121. And our Father,

  1122. as we ponder this

  1123. during the week,

  1124. our Father,

  1125. we just ask

  1126. that you would

1127. bring us into the knowledge

1128. and the good of this,

1129. that we might be happy

  1130. and contented people,

  1131. happy to serve you

1132. and happy to serve others

1133. as we make our way

  1134. through this life.

  1135. And so,

  1136. our Father,

  1137. we just ask

1138. that you be with us.

  1139. We thank you again

  1140. for our time together.

  1141. We just ask

  1142. for these things.

  1143. Give them thanks

  1144. in Jesus' name.

  1145. Amen.
