  1. Well, let me just extend the warm welcome that you've had from JT and Stuart again this morning.

  2. And I hope that everyone has been able to enjoy whatever your plans were for this week.

  3. When you come through the door on a Sunday morning like this, people say, how was your Christmas?

  4. And I think the answer for most of us is the same, busy.

  5. And certainly when you have a small child, then it becomes even busier.

  6. But it's good for us to be together again.

  7. And I just, as I said, I just want to extend that warm welcome.

  8. It's good to see some visitors with us.

  9. And it's good to see, which is interesting because it slightly ties into what we're going to be thinking about this morning.

  10. It's good to see even families that are represented here who are visiting family and loved ones that are not able to be with us.

  11. But it is good to see you here this morning.

  12. And we think about some family members that are dear friends and good church members here in Brunsfield

  13. and not able to be with us through a number of different circumstances.

  14. And we pray for them regularly.

  15. And hopefully, what I'm about to say in our section in Matthew chapter 2, hopefully it just resonates with us.

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  16. Now, let me read the passage and then I'll pray and then we'll get into some of the detail.

  17. And it's found in Matthew chapter 2.

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  18. We've been in Matthew for a couple of weeks.

  19. And we've transitioned between the Christmas story into what we were thinking about last week,

  20. which again was still within the Christmas story where those magi, these wise men came.

  21. And Ian took us through the first 12 verses.

  22. We're going to break in at verse 13 and we're going to read to the end of the chapter.

  23. Matthew chapter 2, verse 13.

    Matthew 2:13

  24. When they had gone, that is the wise man, the magi that we were just referencing there,

  25. an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.

  26. Get up, he said.

  27. Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt.

  28. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.

  29. So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,

  30. where he stayed until the death of Herod.

  31. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet,

  32. Out of Egypt I called my son.

  33. When Herod realised that he had been outwitted by the magi,

  34. he was furious and gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity,

  35. who were two years and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the magi.

  36. That what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled.

  37. A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning.

  38. Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted because they are no more.

  39. After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said,

  40. Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel,

  41. for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead.

  42. So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.

  43. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod,

  44. he was afraid to go there.

  45. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee.

  46. And he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.

  47. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets that he would be called a Nazarene.

  48. I'm sure that God will add his blessing to the reading of his word.

  49. Now let's just commit our time and the next few minutes to God for his blessing.

  50. Our Father, we come before you again this morning.

  51. And as we approach this passage, in all of its complexity and difficulty,

  52. our Father, we just, we ask that as we consider the early part of our Lord's life,

  53. our Father, that you'd speak to us in the circumstances in which we find him.

  54. Our Father, we just commit ourselves to you this morning.

  55. We know that you know all of our needs.

  56. Our Father, we know that you're able to fulfill far more abundantly than all that we can think or ask.

  57. Our Father, you know each and every situation that finds itself before you this morning.

  58. The weeks that we've had, the preparation of our hearts for this morning.

  59. Our Father, we just pray that you would speak and that your voice may be heard.

  60. That we might understand who you are.

  61. Your great purpose in sending your son into this world.

  62. And our Father, we just pray that as we listen to your voice, our Father,

  63. that we might be ready to respond to it.

  64. And so, our Father, we just ask that you be with us this morning as we consider your word.

  65. For we ask these things in Jesus' name.

  66. Amen.

  67. Amen.

  68. So, over the last few weeks, for anybody who hasn't been here, up to the run-up to Christmas,

  69. we were doing a little series called God With Us.

  70. And I haven't given my message this morning a title,

  71. but I think we could probably not end with God With Us,

  72. because you're going to find that that doesn't end.

  73. But I would just like to reuse our little title this morning, God With Us.

  74. You might not have noticed that in the passage as we had started.

  75. But most nativity scenes stop at these words that we've thought about peace and angels and joy.

  76. But yet, when we come to Matthew's gospel, that's not what Matthew writes,

  77. or it's not what Matthew finishes on.

  78. Matthew tells us that almost immediately after Jesus was born,

  79. that he is forced, his family is forced to run for their lives.

  80. There's no silent night.

  81. There's no soft lighting.

  82. There's no calm.

  83. Instead, there's a fear of, there's a sense of fear.

  84. There's urgency.

  85. And we find danger.

  86. Which is an interesting segue into our passage this morning,

  87. because there will be those today who are not feeling peaceful at all.

  88. We think of these nice, warm, fuzzy words at Christmastime,

  89. but actually there will be those who have come and gathered this morning who are not peaceful.

  90. Everything is not calm and bright.

  91. Some of us will be worried about our safety,

  92. and not necessarily physical safety,

  93. even though some of us might be worried about that,

  94. as we look around at the world,

  95. and what's going on in the world,

  96. and what's going on in our land, etc.

  97. Some of us might be anxious about the future.

  98. Some might be grieving things that we did not choose.

  99. And some people might even feel displaced.

  100. That might be physical.

  101. But I think for many of us, it might be more emotional.

  102. It might even be spiritual.

  103. Spiritually that we feel displaced.

  104. When we come to Matthew 2,

  105. it reminds us of this truth that we had in that title that I just mentioned,

  106. God with us.

  107. And as we look through these 10 verses,

  108. and there's so many different ways that we could have looked at these 10 verses this morning,

  109. but as we look at these 10 verses from verse 13 to 23,

  110. I want us just to be reminded of that truth that God is with us.

  111. We kind of think of it on the lead up to Christmas, don't we?

  112. And then as soon as it's Christmas done,

  113. then sometimes we forget all about it.

  114. And that's what I want to focus on this morning.

  115. I mean, you may have come to this passage,

  116. and there's some great historical narrative within here.

  117. And as I was preparing for it, I did think to myself,

  118. let's get into the history.

  119. But there's people here that are far more clued up about that period in history than I am.

  120. And I'm sure that they would come and maybe correct me afterwards.

  121. So let's not necessarily just focus on the historical element of this passage.

  122. We might have also just focused on prophecy being fulfilled,

  123. and we will think about that slightly this morning,

  124. because there's a number of prophecies that Matthew records for us in here,

  125. and we will think about them.

  126. But it brings us to our series, which we'll take into the new year,

  127. which is Kingdom Come.

  128. And it is very much establishing.

  129. And what Matthew does in his first couple of chapters is he establishes that Christ is King,

  130. that the Messiah is that Jesus is the Messiah,

  131. that he is the King.

  132. It takes us through in chapter one that we thought about his lineage.

  133. It takes us through how he's come into this world.

  134. It takes us through all of his credentials.

  135. And Matthew is really setting out his stall in his book, in his gospel, that Christ is King.

  136. But God with us was a little title of our series.

  137. And God is with his people, even when life becomes a bit unstable,

  138. when it becomes unfair or when it becomes unsafe.

  139. And before we get into our passage in great detail,

  140. let me just embellish what I was talking about there

  141. in terms of what Matthew is setting out to do

  142. and the kind of context of our chapter that we're in.

  143. Chapter two demonstrates the birth of Jesus Christ,

  144. that it wasn't an accident of history or in history,

  145. but it was under divine and precise fulfillment of prophecy.

  146. It was unfolding.

  147. The narrative that we have in chapter two is unfolding under God's sovereign hand.

  148. The scene that we are looking at this morning was set during the reign of Herod the Great.

  149. And there are other Herods, but we mark this one as Herod the Great.

  150. And even though he did great things, he was great things.

  151. He was a ruthless leader installed by Rome,

  152. whose insecurities exposes the contrast between his temporary earthly power and heaven's true king.

  153. Last week we thought about the wise men coming

  154. and these magi that arrived from the east.

  155. The east reveals Christ's kingship was recognized far beyond Israel.

  156. Maybe that's a glimpse into the plan that will be revealed in Christ to us.

  157. These wise men were guided by a star, as we thought about last week,

  158. and they come seeking the one who is born king of the Jews.

  159. That is an echo of what we read about in Numbers chapter 24.

    Numbers 24 chapter mention

  160. And as I say, we're not going to focus specifically on the prophecies

  161. and the historical context of them and how they are fulfilled within Jesus,

  162. but that is one of the echoes that we see from the Old Testament.

  163. But Herod's response is fear.

  164. It's not worship, as Ian reminded us last week.

  165. And Jerusalem shares in that disturbance.

  166. It's a telling indication of their spiritual blindness.

  167. And even though that we're going to point the finger at Israel today,

  168. some of what I'm going to say I hope lands with us.

  169. You know, when questioned, as we have thought about last week,

  170. when he summoned those, when questioned, the Jewish leaders and the scribes,

  171. they correctly identified that Micah chapter 5 affirms or prophesies

    Micah 5 chapter mention

  172. that the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem.

  173. But there is one point that I just want to maybe mention this morning,

  174. and it is this.

  175. Knowledge of Scripture does not guarantee obedience to it.

  176. You'll see a point that we might come on to later.

  177. These wise men, sorry, these scribes and the priests that were summoned by Herod,

  178. they knew exactly what the Scripture said,

  179. but they were unwilling to be obedient to it.

  180. And as the Magi then come and they worship,

  181. Herod plots this atrocity, this murder,

  182. this slaughter of Bethlehem's children.

  183. And that also fulfills a prophecy that we read about in Jeremiah chapter 31,

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  184. portraying Israel's long history of sorrow under corrupt leadership.

  185. Then, as we come into our section this morning,

  186. we see that God intervenes through direct revelation,

  187. and he sends Joseph into Egypt.

  188. And again, Matthew tells us here that this is a fulfillment of prophecy,

  189. and it takes us back to Hosea chapter 11.

    Hosea 11 chapter mention

  190. And through originally, though that is originally referring to Israel,

  191. it shows that Jesus is the true Son who perfectly embodies Israel's calling.

  192. Often what we read about in the Old Testament that is written about Israel,

  193. or written to Israel, we see that it is fulfilled in Christ.

  194. And that is one of, that is, I think, a purposeful tact that Matthew takes

  195. as he's writing his gospel here,

  196. and really establishing who the Messiah is.

  197. And then upon returning to Israel,

  198. the family settles in Nazareth,

  199. fulfilling what the prophets spoke collectively.

  200. And even though there's no direct quote for this one,

  201. that he would be called a Nazarene,

  202. but I think it's maybe a colloquial term that Matthew is picking up,

  203. that the Messiah would come, he would be humble,

  204. he would be despised, as we think about in Isaiah 53,

  205. and that it was unexpected.

  206. And I think that's what is referred to as when he talks about

  207. that the prophets said that he would be called a Nazarene.

  208. So Matthew chapter 2 teaches us that prophecy is not merely in words,

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  209. but it is in, or only in a spiritual sense,

  210. as some people would maybe lead us to believe.

  211. But Matthew has shown us that prophecy is fulfilled

  212. in literal, physical history.

  213. And some of the predictions,

  214. the prophetic predictions for the future,

  215. will come to pass, and they will also come to pass.

  216. Some of them will be spiritual,

  217. but they will be literal and physical fulfillment

  218. of some of the promises that have not yet been fulfilled.

  219. Some of those are through suffering and obedience,

  220. but they demonstrate God's unassailable purpose.

  221. And that's what we want to think about this morning.

  222. I want to look at this passage in a slightly different way,

  223. as I've mentioned,

  224. but I want, even just slightly different to my normal style,

  225. I want to pick up one or two themes

  226. that lie just beneath the context

  227. of the casual reading that you would normally come across

  228. if you were just to read this passage.

  229. First of all, you'll see that I've got four simple points

  230. that I want us to think about this morning.

  231. And the first one is this, God's guidance.

  232. We read this in chapter, in verse 13,

  233. an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream

  234. and said, get up,

  235. take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt.

  236. You know, Joseph doesn't receive this message

  237. in some kind of quiet, prayerful retreat.

  238. Sometimes that we think we have to be closed in

  239. and God will speak to us.

  240. No, actually, he received this

  241. in what looks like a moment of crisis,

  242. even though Joseph might not have understood it at the time.

  243. But regardless of that, God speaks clearly.

  244. And his instruction is direct.

  245. He says this, get up, take the child and flee to Egypt.

  246. There's no explanation of how long that will be.

  247. There's no promise of ease.

  248. It's just obedience.

  249. We see here that Joseph doesn't argue.

  250. He doesn't delay.

  251. In fact, it actually says,

  252. and I may be stretching it,

  253. but I think it's in the passage here,

  254. it says he obeyed.

  255. Well, I'm saying that he obeyed that night

  256. because it says here,

  257. and he arose and took the child and his mother by night.

  258. Instant obedience.

  259. You know, many of us want spiritual clarity

  260. in our lives without disruption.

  261. We want God's guidance

  262. as long as it fits our timeline,

  263. as long as it fits our comfort,

  264. as long as it fits our finances.

  265. But under God's guidance,

  266. we see that that's not the case.

  267. Sometimes God's guidance changes our plans.

  268. It interrupts our stable situations.

  269. It maybe asks us to go when we'd rather stay.

  270. And some of us might be here right now

  271. as we finish 2025

  272. and as we contemplate a new year,

  273. we might think about this

  274. in terms of our employment

  275. or our relationships

  276. or a calling that is making us nervous

  277. or a conviction that we can't ignore.

  278. But I just want to pause for a little second

  279. and say this,

  280. that faith

  281. is not just believing that God speaks

  282. or that God speaks to us.

  283. Faith is obeying when he does.

  284. You see that in Joseph's life.

  285. Obedience or obeying

  286. is a word that we don't,

  287. in fact,

  288. mostly we don't like to hear that word at all.

  289. It kind of irks us a little bit.

  290. Most of us don't like to obey.

  291. I've got a 20-month-old son

  292. and it's quite evident

  293. that he often doesn't like to obey.

  294. And as much as we sometimes

  295. try and discipline ourselves,

  296. I think that irks us

  297. all the way through our lives.

  298. We don't like that word obedience

  299. and we don't like to obey.

  300. But notice carefully

  301. that Joseph obeys perfectly.

  302. And in that perfect obedience,

  303. unfortunately,

  304. he still becomes a refugee.

  305. We're not going to necessarily,

  306. as I say,

  307. think about the kind of historical narrative,

  308. but there's many, many Jews

  309. at that time

  310. around that period

  311. that we are thinking about

  312. of where Herod was reigning.

  313. There's many Jews

  314. that escaped

  315. for refuge in Egypt.

  316. But following God

  317. does not guarantee us safety.

  318. It doesn't guarantee us comfort.

  319. It doesn't guarantee us

  320. predictability

  321. or earthly prosperity.

  322. That's something else

  323. that you will find

  324. from people

  325. who teach

  326. a false gospel.

  327. That if you follow God

  328. then everything will be alright.

  329. And yet from our passage

  330. this morning,

  331. I want to show us

  332. that that is not guaranteed

  333. to us.

  334. In fact, actually,

  335. we were talking about this

  336. on the car on the way in.

  337. The Lord Jesus

  338. actually maybe indicates

  339. that the opposite

  340. might be true.

  341. But what it does do

  342. in our passage this morning

  343. is it shows us this.

  344. It shows us

  345. that His presence

  346. is with us.

  347. That's why I thought

  348. we would follow on

  349. with a little card

  350. that says God

  351. with us.

  352. Not only His presence

  353. with us

  354. but His purpose

  355. for us.

  356. Jesus begins His life

  357. and He's displaced,

  358. He's vulnerable

  359. and He is dependent.

  360. I can't imagine

  361. what it would be

  362. to run to another country

  363. hundreds of miles

  364. with a newborn baby.

  365. We're expecting a baby

  366. in a couple of months

  367. and with all the faff

  368. that goes with that,

  369. I can't imagine.

  370. Even just going with Chris

  371. away for,

  372. you know,

  373. 50 miles away

  374. with a two-year-old

  375. at Christmas time

  376. is a lot of faff

  377. but I can't imagine

  378. bundling up a newborn baby

  379. or a toddler

  380. as we are probably

  381. in this reading here

  382. and taking them

  383. hundreds of miles

  384. into another country.

  385. But I wonder

  386. as a believer

  387. do we find ourselves

  388. like that?

  389. Do we find ourselves

  390. displaced?

  391. Do we find ourselves

  392. vulnerable,

  393. dependent?

  394. You know,

  395. we're in the world

  396. but we're not off it.

  397. we're open to attack

  398. from a hostile environment

  399. but we should be

  400. wholly dependent

  401. on God.

  402. You know,

  403. for anyone who

  404. has ever thought,

  405. yeah,

  406. I'm living as a Christian,

  407. these things

  408. shouldn't happen

  409. to me.

  410. Well,

  411. let me put it to you

  412. this,

  413. that our passage

  414. says otherwise.

  415. Sometimes obedience

  416. will lead us

  417. into hardship

  418. and not away from it

  419. but it is never

  420. outside of God's will.

  421. God's guidance

  422. speak to us,

  423. God's guidance

  424. speaks to us

  425. because it is

  426. God's will

  427. and the narrative

  428. that we see here

  429. not only is

  430. to fulfill prophecy

  431. but it is God's

  432. will.

  433. It was planned

  434. before the foundations

  435. of the earth.

  436. Which brings me

  437. on to the second point

  438. which is this

  439. worldly resistance.

  440. When Herod realised

  441. verse 16 to 18

  442. when Herod realised

  443. that he had been

  444. outwitted

  445. he was furious.

  446. The reaction of Herod

  447. I think

  448. exposes a timeless truth

  449. and it is this

  450. that Jesus

  451. threatens

  452. false

  453. power.

  454. Now I don't necessarily

  455. or

  456. I don't only mean

  457. that Jesus

  458. threatens

  459. those in power

  460. but it threatens

  461. false power.

  462. You see

  463. I don't think

  464. Herod was afraid

  465. of a baby.

  466. I'm a bit nervous

  467. about a baby

  468. but I'm not afraid

  469. of a baby.

  470. No, Herod

  471. he was

  472. afraid of losing

  473. control

  474. and I wondered

  475. this morning

  476. because I want to

  477. make this really

  478. real for us

  479. this morning

  480. I wonder if we

  481. are afraid

  482. of losing control.

  483. We think

  484. we are in control.

  485. We think

  486. we have the power

  487. in our lives.

  488. We think

  489. we can do

  490. what we want.

  491. We want to be

  492. in a sense

  493. for many people

  494. they want to be

  495. God in that sense.

  496. They want to

  497. dictate all the rules

  498. they want to be

  499. in control

  500. of their lives

  501. and

  502. in a sense

  503. this is where

  504. Herod is

  505. he wants

  506. ultimate control

  507. false power

  508. in that sense.

  509. I wonder if we

  510. are clinging

  511. on to false power

  512. we think

  513. we've got

  514. all sorted out

  515. who has got

  516. plans for 2026

  517. already

  518. all sorted out

  519. all laid out

  520. where you're

  521. going on holiday

  522. where you're

  523. going to move

  524. what job

  525. you're going

  526. to get

  527. all that kind

  528. of stuff

  529. it's false

  530. power.

  531. God is in

  532. control

  533. in our

  534. little section

  535. here we're

  536. going to see

  537. that false

  538. power actually

  539. is very

  540. ugly

  541. power without

  542. humility

  543. is ugly

  544. and it

  545. often results

  546. in violence

  547. Herod responds

  548. with this

  549. cruelty

  550. and he orders

  551. the murder

  552. of innocent

  553. children

  554. it's a dark

  555. moment in history

  556. and it's one

  557. that we have

  558. seen time

  559. and time

  560. and time

  561. again

  562. when you see

  563. despots

  564. and rulers

  565. that just

  566. want to cling

  567. on to power

  568. that ultimately

  569. belongs to

  570. God

  571. and they

  572. make a

  573. mess of

  574. it

  575. and I

  576. don't think

  577. Matthew

  578. skips over

  579. it or

  580. softens it

  581. in that

  582. sense

  583. it's right

  584. there on

  585. the page

  586. just the

  587. brutality

  588. of what

  589. Herod was

  590. willing to

  591. do

  592. Ian reminded

  593. us last

  594. week

  595. which was

  596. that he

  597. went the

  598. lengths of

  599. killing his

  600. own family

  601. members

  602. his own

  603. sons and

  604. his wife

  605. because of

  606. his insecurity

  607. in that

  608. sense

  609. we still

  610. live in a

  611. world like

  612. that

  613. a world

  614. where innocent

  615. people suffer

  616. because of

  617. corrupt

  618. leadership

  619. where pride

  620. produces

  621. violence

  622. where power

  623. protects itself

  624. at all

  625. costs

  626. I just refer

  627. back to what

  628. Ian said

  629. again

  630. Ian said

  631. last week

  632. that Matthew's

  633. gospel is

  634. gritty

  635. and it's

  636. right up to

  637. date

  638. in many

  639. cases

  640. it's so

  641. similar to

  642. the situations

  643. we see

  644. in our

  645. world

  646. today

  647. but I

  648. think our

  649. passage here

  650. just reminds

  651. us that

  652. in a sense

  653. human nature

  654. never changes

  655. and it

  656. also gives

  657. us the

  658. confidence

  659. to call

  660. out the

  661. atrocities

  662. that we

  663. see in

  664. this world

  665. you know

  666. Christian faith

  667. doesn't deny

  668. it

  669. this is what I

  670. go back to

  671. when sometimes

  672. we hear this

  673. preaching

  674. where you know

  675. when you give

  676. your life to

  677. Jesus then

  678. all will be

  679. well and

  680. you'll be

  681. blessed and

  682. you'll have

  683. seen that

  684. nonsense on

  685. the television

  686. and that

  687. kind of

  688. thing

  689. but Christian

  690. faith is

  691. not a

  692. denial of

  693. these hard

  694. situations

  695. it's not

  696. pretending

  697. that everything

  698. is okay

  699. it acknowledges

  700. the grief

  701. and the

  702. injustice

  703. and the

  704. pain that

  705. is caused

  706. by our

  707. sinful

  708. world

  709. and God's

  710. word takes

  711. time and

  712. room to

  713. record the

  714. grief that

  715. we see

  716. here

  717. Matthew

  718. quotes

  719. Jeremiah

  720. he says

  721. a voice

  722. was heard

  723. in verse

  724. 18

  725. a voice

  726. was heard

  727. in Ramah

  728. weeping

  729. and loud

  730. lamentation

  731. you know

  732. God doesn't

  733. rush past

  734. our sorrow

  735. or this sorrow

  736. he records it

  737. and he

  738. doesn't rush

  739. past our

  740. sorrows

  741. you know

  742. some of us

  743. are carrying

  744. grief today

  745. loved ones

  746. that in human

  747. terms

  748. the loss

  749. of loved

  750. ones

  751. that in human

  752. terms

  753. doesn't make

  754. sense

  755. we carry

  756. pain

  757. that we

  758. didn't

  759. choose

  760. we have

  761. questions

  762. that are

  763. not

  764. answered

  765. and yet

  766. the Bible

  767. makes it

  768. clear that

  769. God sees

  770. the tears

  771. that we

  772. cry

  773. in the

  774. night

  775. the hidden

  776. pain

  777. the hole

  778. that's left

  779. in our

  780. lives

  781. and

  782. the Christian

  783. hope is

  784. not pretending

  785. that it

  786. doesn't exist

  787. it is

  788. trusting God

  789. within

  790. the pain

  791. God

  792. with

  793. us

  794. which is

  795. the point

  796. of our

  797. little

  798. which is

  799. the title

  800. for our

  801. little

  802. consideration

  803. this morning

  804. God

  805. with

  806. us

  807. which brings

  808. me on to

  809. the next

  810. point

  811. that we're

  812. going to

  813. look at

  814. this is

  815. point

  816. number

  817. three

  818. which is

  819. this

  820. sovereign

  821. triumph

  822. God

  823. is in

  824. control

  825. verse 19

  826. to 21

  827. verse 19

  828. and Herod

  829. died

  830. and an

  831. angel of

  832. the Lord

  833. appeared

  834. Herod

  835. dies

  836. but God's

  837. plan

  838. continues

  839. does that

  840. not give

  841. us a

  842. hope

  843. this

  844. morning

  845. does it

  846. not make

  847. you

  848. smile

  849. even in

  850. some of

  851. the chaos

  852. that happens

  853. in our

  854. lives

  855. and in

  856. our

  857. world

  858. it gives

  859. us

  860. hope

  861. tyrants

  862. fade

  863. but God

  864. remains

  865. God is

  866. always

  867. there

  868. he's

  869. always been

  870. there

  871. and he

  872. always will

  873. be there

  874. God

  875. with

  876. us

  877. I

  878. noticed

  879. here

  880. that

  881. I've

  882. written

  883. down

  884. that

  885. evil

  886. has

  887. an

  888. expiration

  889. date

  890. it's

  891. probably

  892. not what

  893. we think

  894. about

  895. when you're

  896. in a

  897. situation

  898. and you

  899. think this

  900. world is

  901. so evil

  902. and it

  903. will never

  904. end

  905. and yet

  906. Herod

  907. dies

  908. he believed

  909. he can

  910. control the

  911. future

  912. that's why

  913. he killed

  914. his sons

  915. he killed

  916. his wife

  917. he killed

  918. the babies

  919. that were

  920. the boys

  921. that were

  922. under

  923. two year

  924. old

  925. in that

  926. region

  927. of Bethlehem

  928. and in

  929. the surrounding

  930. vicinity

  931. he thought

  932. he was

  933. in control

  934. but one

  935. thing he

  936. could not

  937. stop

  938. was God's

  939. promise

  940. and so many

  941. others have

  942. tried the same

  943. haven't they

  944. so many

  945. others have

  946. tried to

  947. do away

  948. with Christianity

  949. who have

  950. put roadblocks

  951. in the way

  952. in fact

  953. it was the same

  954. when Jesus

  955. was crucified

  956. they said

  957. we will not

  958. have this

  959. man to

  960. reign over

  961. us

  962. Matthew

  963. has established

  964. Christ as

  965. the king

  966. and yet

  967. they say

  968. we will not

  969. have this

  970. man to

  971. reign over

  972. us

  973. but he

  974. is king

  975. of kings

  976. and he's

  977. lord of

  978. lords

  979. his kingdom

  980. will be

  981. eternal

  982. his purposes

  983. will be

  984. fulfilled

  985. and the

  986. scripture tells

  987. us his

  988. enemies will

  989. be brought

  990. to nothing

  991. I was

  992. thinking about

  993. him this

  994. morning

  995. written by

  996. Henry

  997. Light

  998. it's not

  999. one that

  1000. we've

  1001. sang here

  1002. for a

  1003. long time

  1004. but it

  1005. says this

  1006. it is not

  1007. for us

  1008. to be

  1009. seeking

  1010. our bliss

  1011. or building

  1012. our hopes

  1013. in a region

  1014. like this

  1015. we look

  1016. for a

  1017. city

  1018. that hands

  1019. have not

  1020. piled

  1021. we long

  1022. for a

  1023. country

  1024. by sin

  1025. undefiled

  1026. you know

  1027. sometimes

  1028. this world

  1029. feels

  1030. overwhelming

  1031. there is

  1032. political

  1033. chaos

  1034. you just

  1035. need to

  1036. spend any

  1037. time on

  1038. twitter

  1039. or x

  1040. if I'm

  1041. up to

  1042. date

  1043. you spend

  1044. any time

  1045. on x

  1046. you will

  1047. find out

  1048. that it

  1049. is

  1050. political

  1051. chaos

  1052. it's

  1053. cultural

  1054. hostility

  1055. and I

  1056. think more

  1057. closer to

  1058. home

  1059. there is

  1060. moral

  1061. confusion

  1062. that is

  1063. the world

  1064. that we

  1065. live in

  1066. but remember

  1067. this

  1068. there is

  1069. no

  1070. government

  1071. there is

  1072. no

  1073. ideology

  1074. there is

  1075. no

  1076. power

  1077. struggle

  1078. a structure

  1079. that is

  1080. eternal

  1081. save that

  1082. which God

  1083. has planned

  1084. before the

  1085. foundations

  1086. of the

  1087. world

  1088. God is

  1089. not reacting

  1090. to the

  1091. events

  1092. and the

  1093. situation

  1094. that Herod

  1095. has created

  1096. here

  1097. no

  1098. God

  1099. is

  1100. reigning

  1101. he is

  1102. in

  1103. control

  1104. and

  1105. he was

  1106. in

  1107. control

  1108. then

  1109. he is

  1110. in

  1111. control

  1112. now

  1113. and God

  1114. continues

  1115. to guide

  1116. his people

  1117. step by

  1118. step

  1119. I want

  1120. you to

  1121. notice

  1122. again

  1123. that

  1124. Joseph

  1125. is

  1126. guided

  1127. step

  1128. by

  1129. step

  1130. the

  1131. angel

  1132. comes

  1133. and speaks

  1134. to him

  1135. and tells

  1136. him to

  1137. get to

  1138. Egypt

  1139. he then

  1140. comes

  1141. again

  1142. and he

  1143. tells him

  1144. he can

  1145. come

  1146. back

  1147. it's

  1148. not all

  1149. at once

  1150. it's one

  1151. step at

  1152. a time

  1153. it's

  1154. something

  1155. that we

  1156. thought

  1157. about

  1158. recently

  1159. when we

  1160. thought

  1161. about

  1162. walking

  1163. walking

  1164. free

  1165. in

  1166. Galatians

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  1167. chapter

  1168. 5

  1169. whether

  1170. or not

  1171. we were

  1172. just going

  1173. to walk

  1174. in

  1175. partnership

  1176. with the

  1177. spirit

  1178. well I

  1179. think

  1180. it is

  1181. the same

  1182. here

  1183. when we

  1184. think

  1185. about

  1186. God's

  1187. sovereign

  1188. triumph

  1189. he wants

  1190. us to

  1191. obey

  1192. some of

  1193. us want

  1194. the full

  1195. road map

  1196. but God

  1197. often just

  1198. gives us

  1199. the next

  1200. fatal

  1201. step

  1202. I wonder

  1203. as we

  1204. finish

  1205. this

  1206. year

  1207. if there

  1208. is

  1209. something

  1210. ahead

  1211. of us

  1212. and God

  1213. just

  1214. asking

  1215. us

  1216. to

  1217. take

  1218. that

  1219. simple

  1220. step

  1221. it

  1222. might

  1223. be

  1224. this

  1225. morning

  1226. that

  1227. there

  1228. are

  1229. people

  1230. and

  1231. for

  1232. some

  1233. of

  1234. this

  1235. message

  1236. you

  1237. might

  1238. have

  1239. already

  1240. closed

  1241. your

  1242. eyes

  1243. and

  1244. you're

  1245. not

  1246. really

  1247. absorbing

  1248. what

  1249. we're

  1250. saying

  1251. that

  1252. could

  1253. just

  1254. be

  1255. because

  1256. you're

  1257. a little

  1258. bit

  1259. tired

  1260. this

  1261. morning

  1262. you've

  1263. had

  1264. a

  1265. busy

  1266. week

  1267. it

  1268. could

  1269. be

  1270. though

  1271. that

  1272. you've

  1273. never

  1274. come

  1275. face

  1276. to

  1277. face

  1278. with

  1279. Jesus

  1280. as

  1281. your

  1282. saviour

  1283. you've

  1284. !

  1285. never

  1286. been

  1287. willing

  1288. to take

  1289. that

  1290. step

  1291. of

  1292. faith

  1293. you've

  1294. never

  1295. been

  1296. willing

  1297. to

  1298. respond

  1299. to

  1300. God's

  1301. call

  1302. into

  1303. your

  1304. life

  1305. well

  1306. the

  1307. invitation

  1308. is

  1309. still

  1310. there

  1311. in fact

  1312. often

  1313. when we're

  1314. preaching the

  1315. gospel

  1316. we would

  1317. maybe

  1318. reference

  1319. in

  1320. revelation

  1321. behold

  1322. I stand

  1323. at the

  1324. door

  1325. and

  1326. knock

  1327. well

  1328. that

  1329. is

  1330. true

  1331. this

  1332. morning

  1333. he

  1334. is

  1335. the

  1336. invitation

  1337. is

  1338. there

  1339. for us

  1340. to come

  1341. to God

  1342. to take

  1343. that step

  1344. of faith

  1345. to trust

  1346. in him

  1347. to realise

  1348. that

  1349. the baby

  1350. that came

  1351. into the

  1352. world

  1353. as we've

  1354. thought about

  1355. in this

  1356. last week

  1357. came into

  1358. this world

  1359. to be

  1360. a saviour

  1361. he came

  1362. into this

  1363. world

  1364. to go

  1365. to a

  1366. cross

  1367. and to

  1368. suffer

  1369. there

  1370. on our

  1371. behalf

  1372. and

  1373. another

  1374. old hymn

  1375. that we've

  1376. probably never

  1377. sang

  1378. in this

  1379. hall

  1380. for a

  1381. long

  1382. time

  1383. was

  1384. this

  1385. only

  1386. a

  1387. step

  1388. to

  1389. Jesus

  1390. it

  1391. is

  1392. that

  1393. step

  1394. of

  1395. faith

  1396. that

  1397. we

  1398. should

  1399. take

  1400. but I

  1401. slightly

  1402. digress

  1403. some of us

  1404. want that

  1405. full roadmap

  1406. up front

  1407. we want to

  1408. know what

  1409. it's like

  1410. and yet

  1411. we don't

  1412. see that

  1413. in this

  1414. passage

  1415. here

  1416. with

  1417. Joseph

  1418. this

  1419. morning

  1420. you know

  1421. my

  1422. challenge

  1423. is

  1424. this

  1425. morning

  1426. that

  1427. when we

  1428. hear

  1429. God's

  1430. voice

  1431. are we

  1432. humble

  1433. do we

  1434. humble

  1435. ourselves

  1436. ready to

  1437. !

  1438. trust

  1439. but trust

  1440. is not

  1441. knowing

  1442. everything

  1443. trust

  1444. grows by

  1445. just walking

  1446. obediently

  1447. in what

  1448. God has

  1449. already

  1450. revealed to

  1451. us

  1452. and sometimes

1453. I think this is true

  1454. in my own life

  1455. sometimes he just shows

  1456. the next step

  1457. ahead

1458. and as long as we are

  1459. willing to take it

1460. as long as we are

  1461. willing to trust him

  1462. then we should

  1463. be confident

  1464. and we should be

  1465. comfortable in the fact

  1466. that God said

  1467. I am with you

  1468. God

  1469. with

  1470. us

  1471. and

  1472. God

  1473. triumphs

  1474. over

  1475. evil

  1476. his plan

  1477. continues

  1478. he is with

  1479. us

  1480. and that is why

  1481. on this third

1482. point that I want us

  1483. just to

  1484. finish on

  1485. is this

  1486. the sovereign

  1487. triumph

  1488. of God

1489. but it takes me to

  1490. our last point

  1491. and this is maybe

  1492. not something that

  1493. we are going to

  1494. necessarily

  1495. like this morning

  1496. but it is this

  1497. quiet providence

  1498. so when I talk

  1499. about providence

  1500. I mean

  1501. God's purpose

  1502. God's plan

  1503. and God's

  1504. provision

  1505. within

  1506. our lives

  1507. quiet

  1508. providence

  1509. we read here

  1510. when we come to

  1511. this last

  1512. little section

  1513. in verses 22

  1514. and 23

  1515. that Joseph

  1516. settles

  1517. in Nazareth

  1518. you know

  1519. Nazareth is not

  1520. an impressive

  1521. place

  1522. it's not

  1523. strategic

  1524. it's not

  1525. prestigious

  1526. in fact

  1527. later people

  1528. would ask

  1529. as we read about

  1530. in John's Gospel

  1531. later people would ask

  1532. can any good thing

  1533. come from

  1534. Nazareth

  1535. we were having a

  1536. discussion

  1537. at the beginning

  1538. of the

  1539. long conflict

  1540. but at the beginning

  1541. of the recent

  1542. conflict

  1543. that started

  1544. between Israel

  1545. and Palestine

  1546. and one of

  1547. Rachel's

  1548. if she doesn't

  1549. mind me saying this

  1550. but one of Rachel's

  1551. aunt

  1552. had been there

  1553. and had been

  1554. in Israel

  1555. at the time

  1556. and as she was

  1557. coming to the airport

  1558. they asked her

  1559. where she'd been

  1560. and she said

  1561. she'd been in

  1562. Nazareth

  1563. and there was

  1564. a disgust

  1565. in the

  1566. border guards

  1567. question

  1568. about why

  1569. she had been

  1570. in Nazareth

  1571. still a place

  1572. that is despised

  1573. even today

  1574. that is what

  1575. Nazareth

  1576. was like

  1577. and yet

  1578. the little point

  1579. I want to make

  1580. this morning

  1581. is this

  1582. that God

  1583. chose

  1584. humility

  1585. over hype

  1586. Jesus grows up

  1587. unnoticed

  1588. unknown

  1589. ordinary

  1590. in human terms

  1591. as we might say

1592. I think for many of us

1593. we live in a culture

  1594. where we're obsessed

  1595. with visibility

  1596. we're obsessed

  1597. with success

  1598. it's a culture

1599. where it's all about us

1600. where we want to be

  1601. the next big thing

  1602. where

1603. and you hear this so often

1604. and I have to smile

  1605. fake it until

  1606. you make it

  1607. well

  1608. that's not the way

  1609. that God works

  1610. God works

  1611. in quiet

  1612. faithfulness

  1613. he works

  1614. in the hidden

  1615. obedience

  1616. he works

  1617. in ordinary

  1618. routines

  1619. I want

  1620. to just dwell

  1621. on that

  1622. for a few minutes

  1623. this morning

  1624. because I think

  1625. that should give us

  1626. confidence

  1627. it should give us

  1628. hope

1629. it should be a comfort

  1630. to us

  1631. and

  1632. our lives

  1633. might not feel

  1634. impressive

  1635. our obedience

  1636. may feel unseen

  1637. but God chose

  1638. this place

  1639. in Nazareth

  1640. for his son

1641. that's where he grew up

  1642. that's where he learned

  1643. obedience

  1644. that's where he

  1645. fulfilled

  1646. his father's

  1647. will

  1648. it was God's

  1649. purpose

  1650. it was God's

  1651. plan

  1652. it was God's

  1653. provision

  1654. I don't want that

  1655. necessarily to contradict

  1656. my first point

  1657. I don't know if you remember

1658. what my first point was

  1659. after 20 minutes

  1660. but

  1661. which was that

  1662. God guides

  1663. and we

  1664. should

  1665. obey

  1666. that God's

  1667. guidance

  1668. and our

  1669. obedience

1670. but I want us to see

  1671. here that

  1672. God works

  1673. in our lives

  1674. just where we are

1675. we don't need to be

  1676. someone

  1677. we don't need to

  1678. go somewhere

  1679. for many of us

  1680. we won't be called

  1681. to paid ministry

  1682. or to serve abroad

  1683. but God expects us

  1684. just to

  1685. enjoy

  1686. and to serve him

  1687. and

  1688. to rely on him

  1689. and to be in

  1690. the circumstances

  1691. in which

  1692. we find ourselves

  1693. and often

  1694. that is in

  1695. unexpected

  1696. ways

  1697. Matthew says

  1698. that this was

  1699. to fulfill

  1700. prophecy

  1701. that Jesus

  1702. would be called

  1703. a Nazarene

  1704. do you know

  1705. God's promises

  1706. are sure

  1707. something I think

  1708. that I often forget

1709. and if you are like me

  1710. then you will probably

1711. often forget that as well

  1712. God's promises

  1713. are

  1714. sure

  1715. but they are not

  1716. always predictable

1717. I think for many of us

1718. you might even just look back

1719. over the last few years

  1720. and you see

  1721. things that happened

  1722. in your life

  1723. situations that you

1724. that you had to face

  1725. and deal with

  1726. and

1727. it's only by looking back

  1728. do you realise

  1729. that God's hand

  1730. was in it

1731. it might not have been

  1732. predictable

1733. it's not what we would

  1734. expect and it's not

  1735. what you're planning

  1736. for 2026

1737. but the point is this

  1738. that God

  1739. is

  1740. with us

  1741. God with us

  1742. and we see that

  1743. we see this

  1744. in the way that

  1745. the promised Messiah

  1746. enters into the world

  1747. they were looking for

  1748. a big

  1749. majestic

  1750. display

  1751. of power

  1752. and might

  1753. a king

  1754. that would

  1755. that would

  1756. ride in

  1757. and all

  1758. pomp and ceremony

  1759. and

  1760. that is not

  1761. what is given

  1762. it is a curveball

1763. that when we come to see

  1764. how Jesus

  1765. entered into this world

1766. not as a mighty warrior

1767. I mean we think of

1768. we think even of that

  1769. you know tender route

1770. out of a dry ground

  1771. unpredictable

  1772. and yet

  1773. God's plan

  1774. is sure

  1775. and it will be

  1776. fulfilled

  1777. I wonder if we

  1778. underestimate

  1779. what God

  1780. has placed us

  1781. in our workplaces

  1782. in our family

  1783. in the season

  1784. that we're currently in

  1785. do we underestimate

  1786. that God has that

  1787. totally in control

  1788. that his hand

  1789. is on us

  1790. that he is

  1791. looking for us

  1792. to obey

  1793. his guidance

  1794. you know

  1795. God is not

  1796. absent

  1797. in obscurity

  1798. he wasn't absent

  1799. when Jesus

  1800. was in Nazareth

  1801. and he's not

  1802. absent

  1803. in our

  1804. ordinary

  1805. situation as well

  1806. in fact

  1807. that's actually

  1808. where he's most

  1809. active

  1810. you know

  1811. I just mentioned

  1812. there

  1813. the whole nation

  1814. of Israel

  1815. those that were

  1816. waiting for the Messiah

  1817. to come

  1818. they were looking

  1819. for a king

  1820. to come

  1821. and to be

  1822. on a throne

  1823. and yet

  1824. we find this

  1825. baby

  1826. not on a throne

  1827. but on the run

  1828. where he knows

  1829. fear

  1830. and displacement

  1831. and injustice

  1832. and loss

  1833. and I think

  1834. that means

  1835. that when

  1836. we think

  1837. about our

  1838. situations

  1839. when we think

  1840. about

  1841. walking through

  1842. unstable seasons

  1843. in our life

  1844. we are never alone

  1845. Matthew tells us

  1846. if we just

  1847. kind of summarize

  1848. what we've been

  1849. thinking about here

  1850. in Matthew chapter 2

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  1851. Matthew 2

  1852. tells us

  1853. subtly

  1854. that God

  1855. guides his people

  1856. he sees their pain

  1857. and he defeats

  1858. evil

  1859. every

  1860. in his time

  1861. might not be

  1862. in our time

  1863. might not be

  1864. in the time

  1865. that we expected

  1866. but it is defeated

  1867. and God

  1868. works through

  1869. humble obedience

  1870. you know

  1871. God is with us

  1872. even when we feel

  1873. unstable

  1874. even when we feel

  1875. uncertain

  1876. even when we

  1877. maybe even feel

  1878. unsafe

  1879. but I wonder

  1880. where is God

  1881. asking you

  1882. to trust him

  1883. today

  1884. I want to

  1885. finish our

  1886. 2025

  1887. this is the last

  1888. service that we'll

  1889. have here

  1890. in 2025

  1891. and I wonder

  1892. if I could just

  1893. challenge us all

  1894. including myself

  1895. this morning

  1896. where is God

  1897. asking us

  1898. to trust him

  1899. right now

  1900. in the uncertainty

  1901. in the grief

  1902. in our

  1903. visions

  1904. in our waiting

  1905. you know

  1906. like Joseph

  1907. we may rise

  1908. even when it's

  1909. dark

  1910. and follow

  1911. where God

  1912. leads

  1913. it's a hard

  1914. thing to do

  1915. but that is

  1916. what God

  1917. is asking us

  1918. there's a poem

  1919. that I didn't

  1920. write down

  1921. some of you

  1922. will know it

  1923. and it's often

  1924. recited at

  1925. New Year

  1926. and it is about

  1927. us

  1928. it is about

  1929. the Christian

  1930. putting their

  1931. hand

  1932. into God's

  1933. hand

  1934. and stepping

  1935. into the

  1936. unknown

  1937. and as we

  1938. step over

  1939. that New Year

  1940. line

  1941. on Wednesday

  1942. night

  1943. and we step

  1944. into 2026

  1945. and all of

  1946. these things

  1947. might be going

  1948. on in your

  1949. head

  1950. and there

  1951. might be

  1952. uncertainty

  1953. and there

  1954. might be

  1955. things that

  1956. you don't

  1957. know

  1958. and there

  1959. might be

  1960. chaos

  1961. in a

  1962. situation

  1963. well

  1964. we might

  1965. just remember

  1966. this little

  1967. story of

  1968. Joseph

  1969. the story

  1970. is actually

  1971. not about

  1972. Joseph

  1973. the story

  1974. is about

  1975. Jesus

  1976. but we

  1977. might just

  1978. remember

  1979. the story

  1980. about Joseph

  1981. this morning

  1982. that he

  1983. even left

  1984. in the

  1985. dark

  1986. and we

  1987. might be

  1988. in the

  1989. dark

  1990. in our

  1991. situations

  1992. but are

  1993. we willing

  1994. to follow

  1995. God

  1996. where he

  1997. leads

  1998. because

  1999. the God

  2000. who protected

  2001. Jesus

  2002. and Joseph

  2003. and Mary

  2004. and countless

  2005. other followers

  2006. after

  2007. is still

  2008. faithful

  2009. today

  2010. he is

  2011. with us

  2012. he will

  2013. never

  2014. leave us

  2015. and these

  2016. four simple

  2017. points this

  2018. morning

  2019. which is

  2020. maybe not

  2021. where you

  2022. thought we

  2023. were going

  2024. to go

  2025. in Matthew

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  2026. chapter 2

  2027. of God's

  2028. guidance

  2029. that he

  2030. speaks

  2031. of the

  2032. worldly

  2033. resistance

  2034. against him

  2035. of his

  2036. sovereign

  2037. triumph

  2038. and of his

  2039. quiet

  2040. providence

  2041. in our

  2042. life

  2043. if we

  2044. think about

  2045. these four

  2046. things

  2047. and if we

  2048. took them

  2049. into 2026

  2050. I think

  2051. we would

  2052. be doing

  2053. well

  2054. let's just

  2055. commit ourselves

  2056. to God

  2057. as we

  2058. ponder these

  2059. things and we

  2060. can ask the

  2061. band to

  2062. come up

  2063. our gracious

  2064. father we

  2065. come again

  2066. to you this

  2067. morning

  2068. and we

  2069. thank you

  2070. that you

  2071. are in

  2072. sovereign

  2073. control

  2074. and all of

  2075. the details

  2076. of our

  2077. life

  2078. even where

  2079. it doesn't

  2080. make sense

  2081. our father

  2082. we cling

  2083. to you

  2084. our father

  2085. we just

  2086. ask that

  2087. as we

  2088. consider

  2089. these

  2090. simple

  2091. things

  2092. this

  2093. morning

  2094. that we

  2095. might be

  2096. willing to

  2097. hear your

  2098. voice

  2099. that we

  2100. might be

  2101. willing to

  2102. take that

  2103. step of

  2104. faith

  2105. and of

  2106. trust

  2107. and of

  2108. obedience

  2109. our father

  2110. challenge us

  2111. this morning

  2112. just to

  2113. wholly

  2114. depend on

  2115. you

  2116. and as we

  2117. consider this

  2118. year that

  2119. is before

  2120. us our

  2121. father we

  2122. pray

  2123. that we

  2124. might just

  2125. commit it

  2126. to you

  2127. that we

  2128. might just

  2129. commit our

  2130. footsteps

  2131. and our

  2132. obedient walk

  2133. to you

  2134. our father

  2135. that you

  2136. might guide

  2137. our steps

  2138. that you

  2139. might give

  2140. us clarity

  2141. even in

  2142. the most

  2143. ordinary

  2144. day to

  2145. day aspects

  2146. of our

  2147. life

  2148. our father

  2149. in our

  2150. living

  2151. and

  2152. in our

  2153. daily business

  2154. our father

  2155. we just

  2156. pray that

  2157. we might

  2158. honour you

  2159. in everything

  2160. that we

  2161. do

  2162. and everything

  2163. that we

  2164. say

  2165. our father

  2166. challenge us

  2167. as we go

  2168. into this

  2169. new year

  2170. not to

  2171. make

  2172. earthly

  2173. promises

  2174. and

  2175. resolutions

  2176. our father

  2177. but to

  2178. make

  2179. spiritual

  2180. ones

  2181. that we

  2182. might

  2183. love you

  2184. more

  2185. that we

  2186. might

  2187. serve

  2188. you

  2189. more

  2190. our father

  2191. but that

  2192. we might

  2193. depend

  2194. on you

  2195. more

  2196. our father

  2197. we just

  2198. ask that

  2199. you bless

  2200. us

  2201. that you

  2202. be with

  2203. us

  2204. for we

  2205. ask these

  2206. things

  2207. in Jesus

  2208. name

  2209. amen

  2210. as
