  1. Okay, folks, have we got Sam 2 open in front of us? Yeah.

  2. This is golden.

  3. And this is just what we need at the start of the year

  4. as we set out as a local church.

  5. Because this gives us a wonderful vision of the kingship of Jesus.

  6. And there's nothing else that we need more this morning

  7. than a greater view of who he is.

  8. So here is Jeff Bozos.

  9. Is that how you say his name?

  10. I'm never sure.

  11. The owner of Amazon.

  12. One of the richest men in the world.

  13. And he's actually considered one of the smartest men in the world.

  14. And he did an interview recently with the Harvard Review.

  15. And he said this in the review.

  16. He said, people always ask me,

  17. what I think is going to change most in the next 10 years?

  18. To be honest, I'd probably ask the guy that question I've ever met.

  19. What do you think is going to change most in the next 10 years?

  20. And my wallet would be listening to his answer.

  21. But here's what he went on to say in this interview.

  22. He said, no one ever asks me what's not going to change in the next 10 years.

  23. Because you find that answer to that question, what's not going to change over the next 10 years.

  24. And that's a place to ground your life.

  25. He said this, let me put it to you, that when it comes to building a business,

  26. that the answer to the second question is way more important than the answer to the first.

  27. Fascinating, isn't it?

  28. And it makes complete sense, logical sense when you think about it.

  29. It's not rocket science to build our lives on the things that aren't going to change.

  30. Which takes me right to Psalm chapter 2.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  31. Psalm 2.

  32. This has become one of the most precious texts in the Bible for me.

  33. And my weary soul that so often drifts and doubts.

  34. Because this is all about the one thing this year that's not going to change.

  35. And the invitation here is to come and see what God has done.

  36. And build your life on it.

  37. And it's not so much an invitation, actually it's a declaration to the world about the kingship of Jesus.

  38. Because in a world that seems increasingly chaotic,

  39. day by day it seems to be that, isn't it?

  40. Increasingly chaotic.

  41. And in a culture that seems angry or sometimes just plain indifferent to the Christian faith,

  42. particularly this time of year, my soul needs to know what Psalm chapter 2 has to say to us.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  43. So come and warm yourself by the fire of this psalm.

  44. And take a huge breath.

  45. Huge gulp of air of the thing that it's telling us.

  46. So why don't we read it together and then we'll get into this together.

  47. Here's the one thing that's not going to change in this psalm.

  48. See if you can spot it.

  49. Psalm chapter 2 says this.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  50. Why do the nations conspire?

  51. And the peoples plot in vain.

  52. The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed,

  53. saying,

  54. Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.

  55. The one enthroned in heaven laughs.

  56. The Lord scoffs at them.

  57. He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath,

  58. saying,

  59. I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.

  60. I will proclaim the Lord's decree.

  61. He said to me,

  62. You are my son.

  63. Today I have become your father.

  64. Ask me and I will make the nations your inheritance,

  65. the ends of the earth your possession.

  66. You will break them with a rod of iron.

  67. You will dash them to pieces like pottery.

  68. Therefore, you kings, be wise.

  69. Be warned, you rulers of the earth.

  70. Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.

  71. Kiss his son or he will be angry.

  72. And your way will lead to your destruction.

  73. For his wrath can flare up in a moment.

  74. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

  75. And God will bless the reading of his word this morning.

  76. Friends, here's two things that this psalm has for us.

  77. Two big lessons.

  78. Here's number one.

  79. It's that the world's rebellion is not unexpected.

  80. So Acts 5 tells us that this is David writing this psalm

  81. in his role as the king of Israel.

  82. You might not see that.

  83. You might not see any kind of author underneath the psalm,

  84. but that's what Acts 5 tells us.

  85. This is David writing.

  86. And that's not just a throwaway comment.

  87. It's actually really important for understanding the psalm

  88. and everything it's got to teach us.

  89. David's writing this as the king of Israel.

  90. What that means is that in the back of his mind,

  91. he has the promises,

  92. the covenant promises that God made to him

  93. in 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  94. Now that's a massive chapter of the Bible.

  95. Here it is.

  96. It's the promises that God makes to David.

  97. That God will establish one of his kings,

  98. one of his sons rather, as king forever.

  99. This is what God promises David.

  100. And his rule will bring peace.

  101. And it will bring rest.

  102. And God will be to him like a father.

  103. And he will be like a son to God.

  104. And David's mulling on these wonderful promises

  105. that God makes to him.

  106. But you see, if that's what's in the back of his mind

  107. as he writes this,

  108. see what he sees in front of his eyes.

  109. He's looking on at a world

  110. that wants nothing to do with the Lord.

  111. Do you see it?

  112. Verse 3, come and see it.

  113. This world wants nothing to do with God

  114. and it wants nothing to do with following his king.

  115. It's why we get the word against twice there.

  116. Do you see?

  117. It just means downright hostility.

  118. Verse 3, here's what they're saying.

  119. Let us break their chains

  120. and throw off their shackles.

  121. Do you feel that imagery?

  122. It's a fist shaking in the direction of God.

  123. That's what's going on here.

  124. Let's get rid of God.

  125. Who is this God thinking that he can tell us

  126. how to live our lives?

  127. And here the puzzled pain in David's voice.

  128. What does he say?

  129. Do you see the word that comes up there?

  130. Why?

  131. Why do the nations conspire

  132. and the peoples plot in vain?

  133. So David looks on what's seen on earth

  134. and the rebellion that's happening against God

  135. and he's saying, what are you doing?

  136. Do you see the vanity?

  137. Do you see the futility of it all?

  138. Oh, that you would see that life lived

  139. in loving submission to this God

  140. is precisely where we'll all find

  141. the very fullness of life that we crave

  142. and that we long for

  143. and the one that we were created to know.

  144. Oh, that you would see that the cords

  145. that you are trying to throw off

  146. are cords of grace and of love.

  147. And that's the scene that David sees on earth.

  148. And then we get the response from heaven.

  149. Do you see it?

  150. And this is the second big lesson

  151. that this psalm has to teach us.

  152. The world's rebellion is not unexpected.

  153. But friends, the throne of heaven is not unoccupied.

  154. Have a look at verse four.

  155. Come with me.

  156. Do you see it?

  157. Now, here's a question for you.

  158. Have you ever wondered what makes God laugh?

  159. Probably didn't come up around the Christmas table conversation, did it?

  160. But have you ever wondered it?

  161. What makes God laugh?

  162. And this is your answer.

  163. And it's not a ha-ha kind of laugh

  164. like Peter Kay's just rocked up at heaven's gates

  165. and told a few funnies.

  166. This is more like a parent

  167. staring down at a tantruming child

  168. who's hitting their fists in anger into their stomach

  169. and they're smirking at the sheer ridiculousness of it all.

  170. That's what God makes of this scene on earth.

  171. Do you see verse six?

  172. God thunders his response to the arrogance of man.

  173. What does he say?

  174. He says,

  175. I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.

  176. So God's reaction,

  177. what God's going to do

  178. in response to the scene on earth

  179. is to vindicate and establish his king

  180. in front of the watching world.

  181. And in so doing,

  182. he's going to confirm once and for all

  183. that his plans and purposes

  184. since from all eternity

  185. will never be stopped.

  186. In other words,

  187. God's going to make a statement to the world

  188. and his statement will come

  189. when he establishes,

  190. do you see the language here?

  191. You've got to see it.

  192. He establishes his king

  193. on his holy hill.

  194. So God's response to the rebellion on earth

  195. is to establish his king on his holy hill.

  196. You with me so far?

  197. This is about to really heat up.

  198. So you've got to get with me, yeah?

  199. This is what God's going to do.

  200. But the thing is,

  201. David's saying this

  202. and I probably imagine he's thinking to himself,

  203. this is way too big for me.

  204. Way too big for me.

  205. And it's Jesus Christ

  206. who steps into all the promises

  207. and all the potential

  208. that's tied up in the true king

  209. of this psalm.

  210. He is the king from the line of David.

  211. At his baptism,

  212. and we're going to see this in a few weeks time

  213. as we get into Matthew,

  214. at his baptism,

  215. God the Father uttered the very words

  216. of verse seven there.

  217. Do you see it?

  218. Here is my son.

  219. Again at the transfiguration,

  220. here is my son.

  221. Listen to him.

  222. King Jesus.

  223. Four things we need to know about King Jesus.

  224. Four quick headlines.

  225. Number one,

  226. heaven's king lived.

  227. Jesus is the perfect king

  228. that Israel never had.

  229. Perfect in his faithfulness.

  230. Perfect in his obedience.

  231. Perfect in his righteousness.

  232. If you scan your eye back

  233. to Psalm chapter one,

  234. he is the Psalm one man.

  235. Number two,

  236. heaven's king crucified.

  237. Jesus the king

  238. who went into battle

  239. for his people

  240. against their biggest enemy,

  241. sin and death,

  242. sharing his triumph with them.

  243. Number three,

  244. heaven's king rose.

  245. Paul would write this,

  246. and we're doing it this morning

  247. at the beginning of Romans,

  248. that Jesus was declared to be

  249. the eternal son of God in power.

  250. And number four,

  251. heaven's king ascended

  252. to the right hand of the Father in heaven.

  253. That's where he is right now.

  254. And so when God says

  255. that he will set his king,

  256. what it means is

  257. he will fix him there.

  258. That's the language of something solid,

  259. something unchangeable.

  260. So heaven's answer

  261. to the scene on earth

  262. is the risen and ruling

  263. King Jesus.

  264. And he is the one

  265. who will usher in

  266. the age of God's promise

  267. to Abraham

  268. to bless the peoples

  269. of the world.

  270. Do you see the overtones

  271. of that in verse eight?

  272. Ask me,

  273. and I will make

  274. the nations your inheritance,

  275. the ends of the earth

  276. your possession.

  277. See,

  278. if you're a Christian

  279. here this morning,

  280. have you ever thought

  281. about the fact

  282. that you are part

  283. of the inheritance?

  284. People of the world

  285. coming to know Christ

  286. for themselves,

  287. finding life in his name,

  288. forgiveness in life.

  289. You are part

  290. of this inheritance.

  291. We are part

  292. of this inheritance.

  293. to be declared

  294. right with this God,

  295. to be welcomed

  296. into his family

  297. through the person

  298. and work of heaven's

  299. all-conquering king.

  300. Do you see the scene

  301. on earth?

  302. The world's rebellion

  303. is not unexpected,

  304. but the throne of heaven

  305. is not unoccupied.

  306. And so see,

  307. as we just make our way

  308. through these last

  309. couple of verses,

  310. let me just

  311. change the angle

  312. a little bit

  313. and just throw out

  314. to us two questions

  315. for us to think about.

  316. Here's the first one.

  317. Friends,

  318. do some of us

  319. need to bow down?

  320. Have a look

  321. at verse 10.

  322. You see,

  323. we are living

  324. in a day

  325. when we're not

  326. short on information.

  327. You know,

  328. I read a stat

  329. the other day

  330. that 500 hours

  331. of video

  332. are uploaded

  333. to YouTube

  334. every single minute.

  335. we're not

  336. short on information

  337. in our world.

  338. You can Google

  339. anything

  340. and it will

  341. give you

  342. an answer

  343. to anything.

  344. But we are

  345. short on our world,

  346. in our world,

  347. on wisdom.

  348. With the facts

  349. that we have

  350. making the correct

  351. decision.

  352. And of course,

  353. what are Psalms 1 and 2?

  354. They're often called

  355. the gateway

  356. to the Psalms.

  357. Offering us

  358. that worldview,

  359. offering us

  360. that perspective,

  361. that pair of glasses

  362. that we can

  363. take,

  364. put on,

  365. and walk through

  366. the rest of life

  367. that the Psalms

  368. present us with

  369. with them on.

  370. The Psalmist says,

  371. in light of what

  372. God will do,

  373. in light of the fact

  374. that he's seated

  375. as king on his holy hill,

  376. be wise.

  377. Respond rightly

  378. to what he has done.

  379. Do you know

  380. it was in 1882

  381. that Nietzsche

  382. famously

  383. heralded

  384. the fact

  385. that God

  386. is dead?

  387. Right?

  388. 1882,

  389. because he believed

  390. that there would

  391. inevitably come a time

  392. when there'd be

  393. no place

  394. for Christian belief

  395. in a post-enlightenment

  396. world.

  397. But if my maths is right,

  398. forgive me if I'm not,

  399. but 143 years on,

  400. it's a good time

  401. to ask how that

  402. prediction is going.

  403. Is it not?

  404. And to ask it

  405. in the same year

  406. that Bible sales

  407. in the UK

  408. went up 14%,

  409. did you know that?

  410. Contrasted with the

  411. wider non-fiction market

  412. which is said

  413. to be faltering,

  414. got to ask how

  415. that prediction

  416. is going.

  417. And it's

  418. Psalm 2

  419. that tells us

  420. that Jesus

  421. is not just

  422. some kind of

  423. skittle in a

  424. bowling alley

  425. and it's just

  426. a matter of time

  427. before the right

  428. person with the

  429. right baubles,

  430. the right thing

  431. and strike

  432. and game's over.

  433. What Psalm 2

  434. is telling us

  435. is that because

  436. this king lives,

  437. God will not be

  438. thwarted in

  439. accomplishing his

  440. purposes.

  441. He's not

  442. Do you see

  443. how that's the

  444. thing that's

  445. not going to

  446. change this

  447. year?

  448. Because our

  449. king is

  450. enthroned,

  451. nothing is going

  452. to stop him

  453. accomplishing this

  454. purpose of making

  455. the nations his

  456. inheritance.

  457. Does that not

  458. encourage you in

  459. evangelism?

  460. And encourage you

  461. to keep going and

  462. witnessing to your

  463. friends and family?

  464. And the invitation

  465. verse 11,

  466. friends, if this is

  467. you this morning,

  468. if you think I

  469. don't know this

  470. king, would not

  471. be a great thing

  472. this year to

  473. explore.

  474. Have a look at

  475. verse 11.

  476. Here's the

  477. invitation, the

  478. wisdom.

  479. Serve the Lord

  480. with fear and

  481. celebrate his

  482. rule with

  483. trembling.

  484. And it's a

  485. strange painting

  486. of words if you

  487. think about that,

  488. isn't it?

  489. celebrate with

  490. trembling.

  491. And yet it is

  492. the joyous

  493. confession of

  494. every Christian

  495. who has found

  496. life and joy

  497. in knowing

  498. Christ.

  499. He is my

  500. Lord.

  501. And I take it

  502. we should put the

  503. stress on both of

  504. those words.

  505. He is my

  506. Lord, my

  507. master, my

  508. saviour.

  509. He is my

  510. Lord.

  511. He is my

  512. personal saviour.

  513. These are

  514. personal saviour.

  515. And the

  516. image there of

  517. bowing before

  518. the king,

  519. kissing his

  520. ring is just

  521. one of pledging

  522. your total

  523. allegiance to

  524. him.

  525. You know, a

  526. number of years

  527. ago we used to

  528. go on a church

  529. weekend, some of

  530. you will remember

  531. this, to a place

  532. called Barony

  533. Castle down in

  534. Peebles.

  535. And there was

  536. something above

  537. the entrance of

  538. the door to

  539. Barony Castle that

  540. always made me

  541. laugh.

  542. just above the

  543. castle door, if

  544. you remember

  545. this, it just

  546. said, prepare to

  547. meet thy

  548. maker.

  549. As I really

  550. relieved, I

  551. didn't have a

  552. clue what it

  553. meant, I went

  554. on Google and

  555. tried to find

  556. out, I was

  557. delighted that I

  558. had nothing to

  559. do with the

  560. foods from

  561. somebody on

  562. TripAdvisor

  563. would tell you

  564. that.

  565. But that's the

  566. warning of this

  567. psalm, isn't it?

  568. Prepare to

  569. meet thy

  570. maker.

  571. one day we

  572. will have to

  573. answer to

  574. heaven's reigning

  575. king.

  576. And for God to

  577. be angry is

  578. not for him to

  579. fly off the

  580. handles.

  581. That's what I

  582. do, that's what

  583. we do, isn't

  584. it?

  585. And we have to

  586. remember that

  587. God isn't like

  588. us.

  589. God is the

  590. all-wise, God

  591. is the all-knowing,

  592. God is the all-

  593. eternal one, God

  594. is the all-just

  595. one, God is

  596. not like us.

  597. So for God to

  598. be angry is his

  599. settled opposition

  600. because of who he

  601. is to all the

  602. evil in the

  603. world.

  604. And I don't

  605. know how that

  606. sits in you this

  607. morning, maybe

  608. for some of us

  609. that makes us

  610. quite uncomfortable,

  611. but can I

  612. suggest that the

  613. idea of God's

  614. wrath is really

  615. good news.

  616. I take it in our

  617. world where we

  618. are so often

  619. rightly angry

  620. at another

  621. airstrike going

  622. on in Ukraine

  623. and at people

  624. in news stories

  625. like Jeffrey

  626. Epstein, that

  627. God, and that's

  628. just the ones we

  629. know about, right?

  630. That God is

  631. right to be

  632. angry, he is

  633. right to be

  634. against all the

  635. evil and the

  636. proud rebellion

  637. against him and

  638. his ways in the

  639. world.

  640. Flip it around,

  641. what kind of

  642. God would he

  643. be if he

  644. wasn't?

  645. But what the

  646. psalm tells us,

  647. friends, is at

  648. the end of the

  649. day we will

  650. have to give an

  651. answer to

  652. heaven's reigning

  653. king.

  654. And the

  655. question really

  656. simply that

  657. Jesus will ask

  658. will be something

  659. like, what did

  660. you make of me?

  661. The decision is

  662. either Jesus has

  663. taken that penalty

  664. for our sin,

  665. he has incurred

  666. God's wrath on

  667. himself in our

  668. place on the

  669. cross, either

  670. Christ has

  671. died for our

  672. sins and

  673. given us

  674. life, or we

  675. will have to

  676. pay for our

  677. sins at the

  678. end of the

  679. day in answer

  680. to him, our

  681. king.

  682. Verse 8, we

  683. like to think

  684. we're invincible,

  685. but in that

  686. day, bowing

  687. before King

  688. Jesus, if you

  689. don't know

  690. him, do you

  691. see the

  692. warning, verse

  693. 8?

  694. To this evil

  695. rebellion that

  696. exists, it

  697. will all be

  698. dashed to

  699. pieces like

  700. pottery.

  701. So folks, do

  702. some of us

  703. need to bow

  704. down before

  705. heaven's king?

  706. Second

  707. question, do

  708. some of us

  709. need to look

  710. up?

  711. And here's

  712. my hope,

  713. this strengthens

  714. many of us

  715. this morning,

  716. perhaps who

  717. are walking

  718. faithfully with

  719. this king.

  720. king.

  721. What I mean

  722. by that

  723. question is,

  724. do some of

  725. us need to

  726. recalibrate

  727. ourselves and

  728. take stock of

  729. where our

  730. king is?

  731. The king who

  732. loves us.

  733. The king who

  734. shed his

  735. blood and is

  736. for us in

  737. heaven.

  738. The king who

  739. is there,

  740. who's praying

  741. for us.

  742. Nothing will

  743. happen to us

  744. this year out

  745. with his

  746. sovereign

  747. say so.

  748. Along with

  749. his father,

  750. he has given

  751. the Holy

  752. Spirit and

  753. Christ is

  754. there praying

  755. for us.

  756. Do you

  757. see where

  758. your king

  759. is this

  760. morning?

  761. We stumble,

  762. we get weary,

  763. we fall, but

  764. he's on his

  765. holy hill

  766. interceding for

  767. us, praying

  768. for us,

  769. holding our

  770. lives.

  771. We don't

  772. have the

  773. mental resolve

  774. to face

  775. another day

  776. at work or

  777. at home.

  778. But he's

  779. on his

  780. holy hill.

  781. When your

  782. day is at

  783. work and

  784. at home,

  785. they just

  786. feel mundane,

  787. they feel

  788. pointless,

  789. you think,

  790. what's the

  791. point in

  792. going on?

  793. He's on

  794. his holy

  795. hill.

  796. When we're

  797. facing our

  798. darkest hour,

  799. he's on his

  800. holy hill.

  801. When we feel

  802. like we can't

  803. go on another

  804. day, he's

  805. on his holy

  806. hill.

  807. When opposition

  808. comes against

  809. us because we

  810. follow Christ

  811. and we don't

  812. know what's

  813. going on,

  814. it feels like

  815. the world's

  816. against us,

  817. he's on his

  818. holy hill.

  819. When that

  820. friend and

  821. family member

  822. feels indifferent

  823. to the things

  824. of the Christian

  825. faith, he's

  826. on his holy

  827. hill.

  828. And when there's

  829. wars and chaos

  830. in the world,

  831. he's on his

  832. holy hill.

  833. Friends, you

  834. see the one

  835. thing that's not

  836. going to change

  837. this year

  838. is that he's

  839. never going to

  840. be toppled from

  841. his place in

  842. the holy

  843. hill.

  844. does that

  845. not give you

  846. great encouragement

  847. and strength

  848. to know that

  849. it's not about

  850. me, it's

  851. not about our

  852. ability to

  853. navigate our

  854. way through

  855. life, it's

  856. about who

  857. Christ is and

  858. his love for

  859. me and that

  860. nothing will

  861. separate me from

  862. his love.

  863. You know,

  864. this psalm is

  865. often quoted,

  866. one of the

  867. places in the

  868. New Testament

  869. is Acts

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  870. chapter 4.

  871. In the

  872. context, Peter

  873. and John

  874. have just been

  875. beaten up and

  876. as they feel the

  877. blows, they

  878. recognise that

  879. what they are

  880. experiencing on

  881. account of

  882. their association

  883. with Jesus is

  884. everything that's

  885. outlined in

  886. Psalm chapter 2.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  887. They make that

  888. connection.

  889. It's amazing

  890. actually when you

  891. read it that

  892. they recognise

  893. that they are

  894. living this,

  895. they are

  896. experiencing the

  897. opposition that

  898. Psalm 2 is

  899. talking about

  900. and they pray

  901. not, Lord

  902. protect us,

  903. they pray,

  904. Lord give us

  905. more boldness

  906. to keep on

  907. speaking and

  908. you read it

  909. and you think

  910. how on earth

  911. did you get

  912. there?

  913. Because I

  914. would be

  915. praying,

  916. Lord protect

  917. me,

  918. Lord make

  919. this stop.

  920. They pray

  921. for more

  922. power to

  923. keep speaking

  924. and going.

  925. How did

  926. you get

  927. there?

  928. The answer

  929. is that they

  930. realise that

  931. there's a

  932. man who's

  933. risen from

  934. the dead

  935. and nothing

  936. will topple

  937. him from

  938. that throne.

  939. That's our

  940. confidence in

  941. evangelism.

  942. Friends,

  943. do you see

  944. how that's

  945. the reason

  946. we keep

  947. speaking?

  948. Do you

  949. see why

  950. it's the

  951. reason we've

  952. got any

  953. confidence this

  954. year of

  955. people coming

  956. to know

  957. Christ in

  958. our community,

  959. our friends,

  960. our neighbours,

  961. our family

  962. members,

  963. the people

  964. that you go

  965. to uni with

  966. every day,

  967. that you rub

  968. shoulders with

  969. every day at

  970. work,

  971. any confidence

  972. that God

  973. will bring

  974. some to

  975. faith.

  976. nothing to

  977. do with

  978. us,

  979. we've just

  980. been faithful

  981. and doing

  982. the job

  983. that Christ

  984. has asked

  985. us to

  986. do.

  987. It's not

  988. in our

  989. ability to

  990. put on a

  991. good show,

  992. it's not

  993. in our

  994. ability to

  995. find out the

  996. tricks of the

  997. trade.

  998. Listen,

  999. Netflix will

  1000. do that way

  1001. better than

  1002. we can.

  1003. What's the

  1004. one thing

  1005. that we hold

  1006. out to the

  1007. world?

  1008. is that

  1009. God has

  1010. seated his

  1011. king on

  1012. his holy

  1013. hill and

  1014. nothing will

  1015. stop him

  1016. accomplishing

  1017. his purposes

  1018. and we

  1019. minister,

  1020. we witness

  1021. for him in

  1022. the slipstream

  1023. of his

  1024. victory.

  1025. So do you

  1026. see,

  1027. friends,

  1028. how that's

  1029. the one

  1030. thing that's

  1031. not going

  1032. to change

  1033. this year?

  1034. Whatever

  1035. comes our

  1036. way this

  1037. year as a

  1038. community,

  1039. whatever comes

  1040. our way

  1041. individually

  1042. this year,

  1043. what's not

  1044. going to

  1045. change is

  1046. he is

  1047. never going

  1048. to be

  1049. toppled

  1050. from his

  1051. holy hill.

  1052. And God's

  1053. plan to

  1054. gather the

  1055. nations into

  1056. one people

  1057. under the

  1058. lordship of

  1059. Christ,

  1060. that plan

  1061. is bang

  1062. on track.

  1063. And just

  1064. to be

  1065. close,

  1066. let me

  1067. tell you

  1068. about a

  1069. book that

  1070. was massive

  1071. when I was

  1072. at uni.

  1073. A number

  1074. of years

  1075. ago,

  1076. I'll give

  1077. you that.

  1078. But when

  1079. I was at

  1080. uni back

  1081. in the

  1082. day,

  1083. this book,

  1084. this 2003

  1085. New York

  1086. Times best

  1087. seller that

  1088. sold a

  1089. million copies

  1090. all around

  1091. the world,

  1092. millions of

  1093. copies all

  1094. around the

  1095. world called

  1096. The Da Vinci

  1097. Code.

  1098. Why it was

  1099. so big is

  1100. that people

  1101. always,

  1102. I remember

  1103. they used

  1104. to come

  1105. up to me

  1106. and say,

  1107. here's the

  1108. book that's

  1109. going to blow

  1110. the hole

  1111. on the side

  1112. of Christianity,

  1113. exposing the

  1114. cover-ups,

  1115. exposing the

  1116. myths.

  1117. And here's my

  1118. favourite article

  1119. that I read on

  1120. the BBC News

  1121. a few years

  1122. ago.

  1123. It was

  1124. about an

  1125. Oxfam

  1126. bookshop

  1127. in 2007

  1128. in a place

  1129. called

  1130. Swansea,

  1131. who put a

  1132. notice in

  1133. their window

  1134. that said,

  1135. and if you've

  1136. got good

  1137. enough eyes

  1138. you can see

  1139. this,

  1140. we're all

  1141. trying to do

  1142. that,

  1143. aren't we,

  1144. in our

  1145. phones,

  1146. but we can

  1147. do it.

  1148. It says

  1149. this,

  1150. you could

  1151. give us

  1152. another

  1153. Da Vinci

  1154. Code,

  1155. surrendered

  1156. by a pile

  1157. of Da Vinci

  1158. Codes,

  1159. but we'd

  1160. rather have

  1161. your vinyl.

  1162. And that

  1163. sign sparked

  1164. an idea

  1165. in the mind

  1166. of a local

  1167. artist called

  1168. David Shrigley.

  1169. What he did

  1170. is he thought,

  1171. I'm going to

  1172. get a hold

  1173. of as many

  1174. copies of

  1175. Da Vinci

  1176. Code that

  1177. I can get.

  1178. So what he

  1179. does is he

  1180. finds out

  1181. where the

  1182. Oxfam

  1183. bookshop

  1184. keep all

  1185. the reserves

  1186. and he

  1187. phones up

  1188. this recycling

  1189. centre where

  1190. all the

  1191. unwanted

  1192. books go

  1193. and he

  1194. asks them,

  1195. how many

  1196. copies of

  1197. Da Vinci

  1198. Code do

  1199. you have?

  1200. They respond

  1201. to him and

  1202. say we've

  1203. got an

  1204. almost unlimited

  1205. number.

  1206. So he

  1207. says I'll

  1208. take the

  1209. lot.

  1210. What he

  1211. does is he

  1212. gets the

  1213. whole lot

  1214. together and

  1215. he pulps

  1216. them and

  1217. he turns

  1218. it into

  1219. a piece

  1220. of art.

  1221. So do you

  1222. see what's

  1223. going on

  1224. there?

  1225. Do you

  1226. not love

  1227. that?

  1228. This

  1229. book that

  1230. was meant

  1231. to take

  1232. God down

  1233. is now

  1234. pulp.

  1235. Friends,

  1236. God has

  1237. done it

  1238. before.

  1239. The

  1240. Babylonian

  1241. empire,

  1242. empire,

  1243. the

  1244. Roman

  1245. empire.

  1246. Do you

  1247. think anyone

  1248. living in

  1249. those days

  1250. thought that

  1251. God would

  1252. outlive those

  1253. empires?

  1254. Probably

  1255. not.

  1256. God has

  1257. done it

  1258. before and

  1259. God will

  1260. keep on

  1261. doing it

  1262. throughout

  1263. history.

  1264. Why?

  1265. Because he

  1266. seated his

  1267. king on

  1268. his holy

  1269. hill.

  1270. The

  1271. opposition on

  1272. earth is

  1273. not unexpected.

  1274. the throne

  1275. of heaven

  1276. is not

  1277. unoccupied.

  1278. The end

  1279. of history

  1280. is not

  1281. uncertain.

  1282. Here's the

  1283. last thing I

  1284. want to say

  1285. if you look

  1286. right at the

  1287. end of the

  1288. psalm.

  1289. I hadn't

  1290. noticed it

  1291. until this

  1292. morning so

  1293. I've not

  1294. scripted this

  1295. we'll just

  1296. run with

  1297. this.

  1298. See the

  1299. word at

  1300. the end

  1301. there?

  1302. It's

  1303. actually the

  1304. word that

  1305. you get

  1306. at the

  1307. beginning

  1308. of psalm

  1309. one and

  1310. at the

  1311. end of

  1312. psalm

  1313. two.

  1314. Do you

  1315. see the

  1316. word?

  1317. What's

  1318. the word?

  1319. Blessed.

  1320. Now roughly

  1321. translated that

  1322. word means

  1323. happy.

  1324. Now you

  1325. know how we

  1326. talk in our

  1327. age about

  1328. our happy

  1329. places.

  1330. Yeah?

  1331. Happy places.

  1332. The wisdom

  1333. that psalm

  1334. one and

  1335. psalm two

  1336. are offering

  1337. us this

  1338. morning is

  1339. that your

  1340. happy place

  1341. make it

  1342. at the

  1343. feet of

  1344. your king.

  1345. So tomorrow

  1346. as you open

  1347. your Bible

  1348. cup of warm

  1349. coffee, warm

  1350. coffee in your

  1351. hands, is

  1352. as you

  1353. open your

  1354. Bible, as

  1355. you read

  1356. about who

  1357. we are in

  1358. Christ, as

  1359. we think

  1360. about his

  1361. victory, as

  1362. we bask

  1363. ourselves in

  1364. that, despite

  1365. the chaos

  1366. that's going

  1367. on in the

  1368. world and

  1369. perhaps in

  1370. our lives,

  1371. the invitation

  1372. of this psalm

  1373. is to make

  1374. that our

  1375. happy place.

  1376. You see

  1377. it?

  1378. Blessed are

  1379. all who

  1380. take refuge

  1381. in him.

  1382. Let me

  1383. pray.

  1384. Amen.

  1385. Father, we

  1386. just want to

  1387. take stock

  1388. this morning

  1389. of the

  1390. fact that

  1391. you are

  1392. God in

  1393. heaven and

  1394. we are

  1395. on earth.

  1396. Lord, would

  1397. you forgive

  1398. us for

  1399. the small

  1400. pictures we

  1401. have of

  1402. who you

  1403. are.

  1404. Lord, that

  1405. you are not

  1406. just like a

  1407. bigger version

  1408. of us.

  1409. you are

  1410. our creator.

  1411. You are

  1412. our savior.

  1413. You are the

  1414. one who is

  1415. eternal.

  1416. You are the

  1417. one who knows

  1418. all things.

  1419. Father, would

  1420. you forgive

  1421. us when we

  1422. have small

  1423. thoughts of

  1424. you?

  1425. And so,

  1426. Lord, it's

  1427. our prayer

  1428. that this

  1429. year would

  1430. be one

  1431. where we

  1432. leave it

  1433. at the

  1434. end with

  1435. a greater

  1436. view of

  1437. who Jesus

  1438. is than

  1439. when we

  1440. came into

  1441. it.

  1442. Lord, would

  1443. you increase

  1444. the horizons

  1445. of our

  1446. minds as

  1447. we grasp

  1448. something more

  1449. of the

  1450. greatness of

  1451. his victory.

  1452. So, Father, I

  1453. pray that

  1454. wherever this

  1455. has landed

  1456. on our

  1457. lives this

  1458. morning, I

  1459. pray that

  1460. your spirit

  1461. would be at

  1462. work teaching

  1463. us wonderful

  1464. things about

  1465. who Jesus

  1466. is.

  1467. And so,

  1468. Father, as we

  1469. turn our

  1470. attention now to

  1471. communion as

  1472. well, Lord,

  1473. may we savor

  1474. something more

  1475. of the sweetness

  1476. of the victory

  1477. that he's

  1478. purchased for

  1479. us on the

  1480. cross.

  1481. So be with

  1482. us, Lord, as

  1483. we finish our

  1484. time together.

  1485. In Jesus'

  1486. name we pray.

  1487. Amen.

  1488. Amen.
