  1. Well, morning, folks. It is so lovely to see you.

  2. My name is Graeme. I'm the pastor here, and it's great to meet

  3. ! Particularly some new people this morning for whom this is your first time.

  4. We just want you to know how welcome you are.

  5. Now, friends, have you got Matthew 3 open in front of you?

  6. Yeah?

  7. Right.

  8. Do you remember what Shrek said about ogres?

  9. What did he say about ogres?

  10. What are they like?

  11. Onions.

  12. Why are they like onions?

  13. Layers.

  14. Oh, my goodness, guys. Matthew 3, the layers in this.

  15. It's unbelievable.

  16. I've had the week of my dreams this week in this text because of the depth

  17. and the God that we meet in this four verses of Scripture.

  18. So just in case you're thinking we're shortchanging you this morning

  19. by looking at four verses, layers, depths to this.

  20. Can I get us into it this morning?

  21. Here is a T-shirt that you'll find that you can buy at the minute on Etsy.

  22. It's a T-shirt.

  23. Apparently, they market it as the perfect one for a parent to wear when they're out

  24. and about with their children.

  25. So picture the scene.

  26. You're in the 24-7 Asda.

  27. You're a parent.

  28. The kids are running mental around the place looking for the sweet cereal aisle.

  29. Promise you it's a hypothetical.

  30. I've never lived it.

  31. Okay?

  32. They're running around causing chaos.

  33. Somebody from the other aisle, another customer, looks on at these kids disapprovingly

  34. and you can tell what they're thinking.

  35. Whose kids are these?

  36. Only for you to look at mom or dad wearing this T-shirt.

  37. Yeah, I'm with them.

  38. You know the kind of novelty T-shirts that you get?

  39. I'm with her, arrow.

  40. I'm with him, arrow.

  41. You got that phrase in your mind?

  42. Yeah, I'm with them.

  43. That's the phrase that you've got to keep in your mind if you're going to get the enormity

  44. of the truth at the heart of this passage.

  45. So if you're a note taker today, and I love that so many of you are, if you're a note taker

  46. or if you're like me, you like to scribble things in your Bible, then that is what to write

  47. above verses 13 to 17 of Matthew chapter 3.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  48. Go ahead and do it.

  49. Yeah, I'm with them.

  50. And it's the answer to the million dollar question that's right at the heart of this passage.

  51. Are you thinking it?

  52. If you were here last week, maybe it's already in your mind, the million dollar question.

  53. And I'm going to try and get us there.

  54. We'll get to that question in about 10 minutes time, but see if you can work it out as we go.

  55. What we need to appreciate as we head there is that there is a rough 28 year time gap between

  56. the end of chapter 2, do you see it there, and the beginning of chapter 3.

  57. Now blinking, you might miss that.

  58. You might not get that in the plain reading, but that's what's happening in the chronology

  59. of this.

  60. There's a 28 year time gap between the end of chapter 2 and the beginning of chapter 3.

  61. So that means that Matthew has given us in his account of Jesus' life, he has given us

  62. two detailed chapters, 1 and 2, on the first two years of Jesus' life.

  63. And then he's proceeded to write another 26 chapters on the last three years of Jesus' life.

  64. And that's with a purpose.

  65. It tells you that Matthew, according to Matthew, if you and I want to understand who Jesus is,

  66. his person, his significance, we need to get the beginning and the end of his life.

  67. Now if you're like me, you've got a curious mind.

  68. You're thinking, what on earth happened in between those years, right?

  69. What happened in that gap?

  70. Well, we don't know a huge amount about what did happen in those in-between years.

  71. But we do know one thing for certain that didn't happen.

  72. Jesus never sinned.

  73. Yeah?

  74. Jesus never sinned.

  75. So imagine that.

  76. No cheat to his parents.

  77. No fallout with his siblings.

  78. No teenage pushing of boundaries.

  79. No expletives when he hits his thumb with the hammer on the carpentry work site.

  80. And that's the reason I imagine that none of the other Nazarene mums wanted to go for a coffee catch-up with Mary.

  81. And they're telling her about their child but refusing to tidy their room.

  82. How's it going for you, Mary?

  83. He's perfect.

  84. No sin.

  85. And just in case we think his life is about not doing things,

  86. what he is doing this whole time

  87. is he is giving his life totally over to pursuing obedience to God

  88. and with that knowing joy.

  89. Sometimes you'll hear theologians call those two sides of the perfection coin

  90. Jesus' passive and his active obedience.

  91. It's really important.

  92. One of the foundation things of the Christian faith.

  93. His active and his passive obedience.

  94. And I think instinctively we struggle to get our heads around that.

  95. I was thinking that this week.

  96. Because we don't know anything other than living our lives in this world that is broken.

  97. I struggle with this.

  98. I've got no framework for understanding what a perfect life would look like.

  99. I mean, how easy is it at the minute to turn on the news

  100. and see what's happening to people in Iran?

  101. And to watch something like that.

  102. And honestly, your heart is just completely unmoved.

  103. Or Ukraine or Gaza.

  104. Or you take your pick at the minute.

  105. And you feel like because we're bombarded with it

  106. that we can become almost emotionally numb to it.

  107. I've listened to enough Jeremy Vine phone-ins on Radio 2

  108. doing a long drive down south in my time

  109. to know that one of the bingo phrases from callers

  110. when he asked people to ring in

  111. and comment on the latest big political scandal,

  112. one of the bingo phrases you hear from people is this.

  113. It doesn't surprise me anymore.

  114. We're just so used to living in this world.

  115. But what we need to see is that when Jesus comes on the scene,

  116. he is something both radically different and wonderfully attractive.

  117. And Matthew wants us to look at him and conclude,

  118. here is humanity as it was always meant to be.

  119. He is perfect love,

  120. covered over in flesh.

  121. And so with that in mind,

  122. would you have a look at verse 13?

  123. Now remember the context

  124. that we thought about last week.

  125. John the Baptist is at the River Jordan.

  126. So people are coming to him.

  127. Do you remember we saw that last week?

  128. Verse 6.

  129. People are coming to him.

  130. And what are they doing?

  131. They are confessing their sins.

  132. They are publicly declaring that there is dirt on my hands,

  133. that I am guilty before a holy God.

  134. And my greatest need in this moment

  135. is not to keep hiding,

  136. is to come and be clean.

  137. That's what they're coming to John and saying.

  138. And what are they doing?

  139. They are being baptized.

  140. Again, to see it in the text,

  141. they're being baptized.

  142. So they're going under the water.

  143. They're coming up again.

  144. And then one day,

  145. John is out in the middle of the river doing his thing.

  146. You're in the text.

  147. Yeah?

  148. He's out in the middle of the river doing his thing.

  149. As usual,

  150. a queue of people is forming.

  151. Right?

  152. Again, we're British.

  153. It probably wasn't a queue.

  154. Probably just gathering around the river.

  155. Right?

  156. But looking up,

  157. what does John see?

  158. Or rather,

  159. who does John see?

  160. He clocks Jesus.

  161. Do you remember Jesus as the one,

  162. verse 11,

  163. whose sandals John has just said

  164. that he is not worthy to untie?

  165. And Jesus has come all the way

  166. from Galilee in the north

  167. down to the Jordan.

  168. Now, depending on where the starting

  169. and the ending point is

  170. that is somewhere between

  171. a 40 to 80 mile trip.

  172. Think of it roughly Glasgow to Edinburgh

  173. or Edinburgh to Glasgow,

  174. depending on your preference.

  175. And he's not doing an Uber.

  176. He's doing it on foot.

  177. Now, just remember what we thought about last week

  178. with all these details.

  179. None of it is filler.

  180. All of this is with a purpose.

  181. What is the purpose?

  182. What does Matthew want us to see?

  183. He wants us to see that this has a purpose.

  184. And now we're getting warmer

  185. to our million dollar question.

  186. Are you thinking it yet?

  187. Are you thinking it yet?

  188. John, he clocks Jesus in line.

  189. And he effectively says,

  190. Jesus,

  191. what are you doing here?

  192. What are you doing here?

  193. You're here wanting to be baptized by me?

  194. Surely it's me that needs to be baptized

  195. by you.

  196. Do you see what he's saying?

  197. Surely this should be the other way around.

  198. I guess this is a bit like Magnus Carlsen

  199. enrolling in a beginner's chess class.

  200. Or maybe it's Adele auditioning

  201. in the early rounds of the X Factor.

  202. Do you get it?

  203. Surely it's the other way around.

  204. And you've got to say that John's right, isn't he?

  205. And I was thinking about it this week, friends.

  206. I can get my head around

  207. why the people in this day

  208. are confessing their sins

  209. and getting baptized.

  210. I get that.

  211. I can get

  212. and most definitely understand

  213. why I needed to repent of my sins

  214. and come to Christ to forgiveness.

  215. And so we've arrived

  216. at the million dollar question.

  217. Are you thinking it?

  218. Why is Jesus getting baptized?

  219. Because he's not repenting

  220. of any sins that he committed.

  221. Right?

  222. You guys, perfect.

  223. Friends, this is where we need to remember

  224. the T-shirt.

  225. He's not repenting of any sins.

  226. What is he doing in this moment?

  227. And this is glorious.

  228. He is identifying himself

  229. with the very people

  230. that he's come to save.

  231. And see, as we try

  232. and get our heads into this,

  233. to the answer to that question,

  234. I was reminded of a famous old quote

  235. about the Bible.

  236. And it's been attributed

  237. to many people over the years.

  238. And to be honest,

  239. it's been repeated so often,

  240. I don't think anyone knows

  241. who said it anymore.

  242. But that's no problem

  243. because it's not about

  244. who has copyright to it.

  245. It's about the insight

  246. that it contains

  247. and it's absolutely golden.

  248. You ready for this?

  249. The Bible

  250. is like a river

  251. shallow enough

  252. for a lamb to go wading,

  253. but deep enough

  254. for the elephant

  255. to go swimming.

  256. And what Matthew is doing

  257. in verses 16 and 17

  258. is inviting us out

  259. to the deep waters

  260. and

  261. to the deep waters

  262. and to get our elephant on.

  263. Friends, this is,

  264. this is deep

  265. and it is profound

  266. and it is wonderful.

  267. And maybe you're here

  268. this morning,

  269. you think,

  270. all this Jesus stuff

  271. is still new to me.

  272. I don't really get it.

  273. Come wait in this.

  274. This is who our God is.

  275. What we get in these four verses,

  276. we get a profound glimpse

  277. into the heart

  278. and the mission

  279. of the God of the Bible.

  280. You ready to be stretched

  281. a little bit by this text?

  282. You up for it?

  283. The God of the Bible

  284. is triune.

  285. We've already been singing

  286. about that,

  287. meaning that he is one God

  288. in three persons.

  289. He is Father,

  290. he is Son,

  291. he is Spirit,

  292. and that puts him

  293. in a league of his own.

  294. There is nothing else

  295. like him

  296. out there

  297. on the market.

  298. He is radically different

  299. from any

  300. so-called competitors

  301. in this world.

  302. He is so radically

  303. different from

  304. what our Muslim friends

  305. would understand

  306. Allah to be like.

  307. or our Buddhist friends

  308. who worship many gods.

  309. The God of the Bible

  310. is radically different.

  311. He is the reality

  312. of all realities.

  313. He is the beauty

  314. of all beauties.

  315. Before anything was,

  316. he was.

  317. And with perfect wisdom

  318. and power,

  319. this God spoke creation

  320. into existence.

  321. What do we do

  322. when we speak?

  323. Why does anyone speak?

  324. They speak to make

  325. themselves known.

  326. And this God

  327. has made himself

  328. known

  329. in creation.

  330. And why did he

  331. create the world?

  332. Have you ever wondered that?

  333. Why did he create the world?

  334. Well, because he is

  335. Father, Son, and Spirit.

  336. Because he is

  337. a community of love.

  338. The answer cannot be

  339. that he was lonely

  340. or that he is needy.

  341. He doesn't need anything.

  342. He's not sure

  343. of enjoyment

  344. and satisfaction.

  345. He created the world

  346. to showcase his glory

  347. and invite us

  348. into knowing him.

  349. Friends,

  350. have you ever wondered

  351. why human beings

  352. long for relationships?

  353. The answer is

  354. that we are made

  355. in the image of God

  356. who has eternally existed

  357. as a fully satisfied

  358. community of love.

  359. We're made in his image.

  360. No longer there's longings

  361. for relationships.

  362. This God,

  363. he knows the end

  364. from the beginning.

  365. He's never reacting

  366. to anything.

  367. When Adam and Eve

  368. rebelled against God

  369. in the Garden of Eden,

  370. it was tragic,

  371. but it did not take him

  372. by surprise.

  373. No, this God

  374. has eternally had

  375. a plan

  376. to redeem the world

  377. and showcase

  378. the glory of his love

  379. to the world.

  380. You feeling stretched?

  381. And in Matthew,

  382. what do we get here?

  383. Who's in the photo,

  384. if you like?

  385. Who's in the photo?

  386. The Father,

  387. the Son,

  388. and the Spirit.

  389. You feeling stretched?

  390. And I think we're meant

  391. to ask,

  392. if we know

  393. the Bible story,

  394. I think we're meant

  395. to ask ourselves,

  396. when was the last time

  397. that we saw all three

  398. mentioned together

  399. in the Bible story?

  400. And the answer,

  401. I think,

  402. is Genesis 1.

  403. With the Spirit

  404. hovering over the waters,

  405. let us make man

  406. in our image.

  407. And what is Matthew doing

  408. but creating that sense

  409. of wonderful anticipation

  410. as to what God

  411. is about to do

  412. that's kicking off

  413. in this moment

  414. as he is acting

  415. to bring about

  416. the start of

  417. a new creation.

  418. You see,

  419. as far as

  420. the earth is concerned,

  421. the baptism of Jesus,

  422. I don't imagine

  423. it looks anything special

  424. as far as

  425. earth looking on

  426. is concerned.

  427. But it's almost

  428. as if heaven

  429. at the kickoff

  430. of Jesus'

  431. public ministry

  432. cannot contain

  433. its excitement.

  434. And so,

  435. friends,

  436. let's just think

  437. about three things

  438. that we can savor

  439. as we think about

  440. the Father,

  441. the Son,

  442. and the Spirit

  443. from these verses.

  444. Here's the first thing

  445. we need to savor here.

  446. It's the willing Son

  447. to fulfill

  448. all righteousness.

  449. See verse 15,

  450. right?

  451. Jesus tells John

  452. why he's come

  453. to get baptized.

  454. Do you see it?

  455. What does he say?

  456. To fulfill

  457. all

  458. righteousness.

  459. Now,

  460. we're thinking a bit more

  461. about that word

  462. fulfill

  463. and the law

  464. in a few chapters

  465. time.

  466. But for the purposes

  467. of this today,

  468. in the back

  469. of Jesus'

  470. mind

  471. is this thing

  472. that Isaiah

  473. had spoken about.

  474. And this is where

  475. Isaiah 42

  476. and 52

  477. and 53

  478. come in.

  479. So if you've got it

  480. there,

  481. you can flick there.

  482. And the book of Isaiah,

  483. you've got these two

  484. big things that are

  485. happening in Isaiah.

  486. These two big themes

  487. that you think,

  488. how is this puzzle

  489. going to be solved?

  490. So on the one hand,

  491. you've got God

  492. promising that he's

  493. going to rightly

  494. punish his people

  495. for their blatant

  496. idolatry and sin

  497. against him

  498. and for dragging

  499. his name

  500. through the mud

  501. via their lives

  502. in front of the nations.

  503. So God's going,

  504. on one hand,

  505. he's going to say,

  506. I'm going to punish sin.

  507. But on the other hand,

  508. God is promising

  509. that he's going to

  510. make a way

  511. for his people

  512. to be forgiven

  513. and set free

  514. and to be transformed.

  515. God is going to

  516. create this city

  517. of righteousness

  518. and he's going to

  519. create a people

  520. who long

  521. to live

  522. for him.

  523. And you think,

  524. how is God

  525. going to do

  526. both of these things?

  527. We're standing

  528. at the center

  529. of that Venn diagram.

  530. How God

  531. is going to be faithful

  532. to both of those things?

  533. It's this figure

  534. that you get

  535. in Isaiah 42,

  536. get it in 49,

  537. 52, 53,

  538. called

  539. my servant.

  540. This figure

  541. who will act

  542. wisely,

  543. who will have

  544. no deceit

  545. in his mouth,

  546. who will be

  547. despised

  548. and rejected

  549. by men,

  550. who will be

  551. a man of

  552. sorrows

  553. and he will

  554. carry all

  555. our infirmities

  556. on himself

  557. and he will be

  558. pierced for

  559. our

  560. transgressions.

  561. And what else

  562. will he do?

  563. He will

  564. number

  565. himself

  566. with the

  567. transgressors.

  568. So he will say,

  569. I'm one of them.

  570. Are you beginning

  571. to get this?

  572. He's going to say,

  573. I'm one of them.

  574. And Christians

  575. down the ages

  576. have rightly,

  577. absolutely

  578. cherished

  579. Isaiah 52

  580. and 53

  581. in particular

  582. because we read

  583. this and we think

  584. to ourselves,

  585. cannot wait

  586. to meet this guy.

  587. Where is he coming?

  588. sin?

  589. We read it

  590. alongside Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  591. chapter 3.

  592. And so here

  593. we have

  594. Jesus

  595. in this

  596. the most

  597. wonderful

  598. of moments

  599. who having

  600. read the

  601. scriptures

  602. since he

  603. was a boy,

  604. he declares

  605. in this

  606. moment

  607. as he gets

  608. baptized,

  609. as he stands

  610. in the place

  611. of sinners,

  612. as he identifies

  613. with them,

  614. with this

  615. my servant

  616. in the back

  617. of his mind.

  618. He is declaring,

  619. I am willing.

  620. He's uniting

  621. himself with

  622. the people

  623. that he's come

  624. to save,

  625. saying,

  626. Father,

  627. I will live

  628. for them.

  629. For them,

  630. I'll do it.

  631. I will live

  632. for them

  633. the perfect

  634. life that

  635. they could

  636. never live.

  637. And I will

  638. die the death

  639. that they

  640. deserve to die

  641. because of

  642. their sin.

  643. I'm up for it.

  644. I'm going to

  645. be the servant.

  646. And it's

  647. well worth

  648. seeing,

  649. folks,

  650. that Jesus

  651. saves us

  652. by both

  653. his doing

  654. and his

  655. dying.

  656. Jesus

  657. is stepping

  658. right into

  659. the shoes

  660. of Isaiah

  661. 52 and

  662. 53 of

  663. this servant

  664. job description

  665. and he's

  666. declaring in

  667. this moment,

  668. I am

  669. willing.

  670. oh,

  671. is this

  672. not great

  673. that he's

  674. come to

  675. do the

  676. very thing

  677. that I

  678. could never

  679. do for

  680. myself

  681. and that

  682. you could

  683. never do

  684. for yourself.

  685. He left

  686. the

  687. eternity

  688. with his

  689. father and

  690. you all

  691. go and

  692. he stepped

  693. into the

  694. water for

  695. you and

  696. I.

  697. See the

  698. willing son,

  699. but secondly,

  700. we need to

  701. go quicker

  702. here,

  703. I promise.

  704. See the

  705. equipping

  706. spirit.

  707. Verse 16,

  708. he descends

  709. on Jesus

  710. in the form

  711. of a dove.

  712. Now don't

  713. get sidetracked

  714. by the dove

  715. there.

  716. I'm going to

  717. give you

  718. your theories

  719. afterwards.

  720. The answer is

  721. we're not

  722. sure.

  723. I think it's

  724. just another

  725. symbol for

  726. the Holy

  727. Spirit.

  728. You get

  729. fire,

  730. you get

  731. lots of

  732. symbols

  733. throughout

  734. scripture.

  735. It's

  736. just another

  737. one of

  738. these

  739. indicating

  740. the

  741. presence

  742. of

  743. the

  744. Spirit.

  745. But what's

  746. important to

  747. see is

  748. that the

  749. falling of

  750. the Spirit

  751. connects Jesus

  752. with the

  753. servant of

  754. Isaiah 42.

  755. The one on

  756. whom God

  757. will put

  758. his Spirit.

  759. And what

  760. will that

  761. Spirit do?

  762. What will

  763. he do?

  764. He will

  765. empower

  766. Jesus to

  767. accomplish

  768. his mission.

  769. And he

  770. will bring

  771. home the

  772. truth that

  773. the Father

  774. is just

  775. about to

  776. declare of

  777. him.

  778. I take

  779. it he

  780. will bring

  781. it home

  782. in a

  783. really

  784. personal

  785. way.

  786. But the

  787. big thing

  788. to see is

  789. the Spirit

  790. is given

  791. to the

  792. Son and

  793. sends him

  794. out to

  795. accomplish

  796. this

  797. mission.

  798. And this

  799. is Ian's

  800. verses next

  801. week and I

  802. don't want to

  803. verse creep but

  804. I'll do it

  805. for five

  806. seconds.

  807. Okay.

  808. Look at

  809. verse one

  810. of chapter

  811. four.

  812. It is the

  813. Spirit that

  814. leads Jesus

  815. into the

  816. wilderness.

  817. Friends,

  818. the equipping

  819. Spirit,

  820. we're going

  821. quicker here.

  822. Thirdly,

  823. see the

  824. adoring

  825. Father.

  826. Verse 17.

  827. Look at

  828. this.

  829. With

  830. him

  831. I am

  832. well

  833. pleased.

  834. Oh,

  835. the

  836. Father,

  837. his heart

  838. is positively

  839. bursting with

  840. pride and

  841. brimming with

  842. love as he

  843. looks on the

  844. faithful obedience

  845. of his

  846. Son.

  847. And there

  848. are overtones

  849. in that word

  850. Son there.

  851. We don't have

  852. time to do

  853. this but you

  854. can check out

  855. your own time

  856. of Psalm

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  857. chapter 2

  858. and 2 Samuel

  859. 7 there.

  860. We thought

  861. about Psalm

  862. 2 a few

  863. weeks ago

  864. in the

  865. first sermon

  866. of this

  867. year.

  868. But when

  869. God talks

  870. about his

  871. Son there,

  872. he's also

  873. talking about

  874. his King.

  875. And the

  876. way that

  877. Matthew's

  878. written this

  879. is he

  880. emphasizes

  881. verse 16

  882. in Matthew.

  883. Do you

  884. see how

  885. Jesus

  886. seeing and

  887. presumably

  888. hearing

  889. is to

  890. show us

  891. that although

  892. this

  893. declaration

  894. is for

  895. the world,

  896. these words

  897. are aimed

  898. personally

  899. at Jesus.

  900. Now

  901. why does

  902. that matter?

  903. here's

  904. what we're

  905. going to

  906. see next

  907. week.

  908. It matters

  909. next week

  910. because in

  911. the very

  912. next few

  913. verses,

  914. the devil

  915. is going

  916. to be in

  917. Jesus'

  918. ear saying,

  919. are you

  920. sure?

  921. You

  922. sure you're

  923. the Son?

  924. You sure

  925. you heard

  926. that right?

  927. I mean,

  928. the distance

  929. between heaven

  930. and earth

  931. is big

  932. and phone

  933. reception is

  934. not great

  935. these days.

  936. You've

  937. just

  938. switched

  939. to

  940. O2.

  941. You sure

  942. it didn't

  943. fall out?

  944. You sure

  945. it didn't

  946. drop?

  947. Or is it

  948. a contract?

  949. You didn't

  950. read the

  951. terms and

  952. conditions?

  953. There's an

  954. asterisk there

  955. that you

  956. missed.

  957. You sure?

  958. I mean,

  959. would you

  960. really be out

  961. here starving

  962. in the

  963. wilderness

  964. if that

  965. was true?

  966. I mean,

  967. it's as if

  968. here God

  969. the Father

  970. is saying

  971. to his

  972. son at

  973. the outset

  974. of his

  975. public

  976. ministry,

  977. no matter

  978. what happens,

  979. he sees

  980. you step

  981. into being

  982. that servant.

  983. Don't you

  984. believe anything

  985. else?

  986. And is

  987. that not a

  988. wonderful

  989. lesson for

  990. the Christian

  991. life?

  992. When the

  993. devil so

  994. often whispers

  995. in our

  996. ears,

  997. you sure?

  998. Again,

  999. think back to

  1000. the beginning

  1001. of the

  1002. Bible story,

  1003. Genesis 3,

  1004. the devil's

  1005. only got one

  1006. play.

  1007. You sure?

  1008. Did God

  1009. really say?

  1010. Did he

  1011. really say

  1012. that you

  1013. can be

  1014. forgiven of

  1015. all your

  1016. sins?

  1017. Did he

  1018. really say

  1019. his love

  1020. is unconditional?

  1021. Nothing's

  1022. going to

  1023. separate you

  1024. from it.

  1025. Are you

  1026. sure?

  1027. Have you

  1028. seen your

  1029. week last

  1030. week?

  1031. If he did

  1032. love you,

  1033. do you not

  1034. think your

  1035. life would

  1036. be a little

  1037. bit easier?

  1038. A cancer

  1039. free life?

  1040. Do you not

  1041. think that you

  1042. would sail

  1043. through your

  1044. exams?

  1045. Do you not

  1046. think you

  1047. would have

  1048. no mental

  1049. health

  1050. worries?

  1051. Do you not

  1052. think there

  1053. would be no

  1054. relational

  1055. difficulties in

  1056. your life?

  1057. Are you

  1058. sure that you

  1059. picked that

  1060. up right?

  1061. That's when

  1062. we need to

  1063. remember that

  1064. united to

  1065. Christ,

  1066. the Father

  1067. feels the

  1068. exact same

  1069. way about

  1070. us as he

  1071. does his

  1072. son.

  1073. Nothing's

  1074. going to

  1075. separate us

  1076. from his

  1077. love.

  1078. Why?

  1079. Because he's

  1080. willing to

  1081. be this

  1082. servant.

  1083. What did

  1084. he do?

  1085. He steps

  1086. into the

  1087. water for

  1088. us.

  1089. And in

  1090. this minute

  1091. he identifies

  1092. with all

  1093. those who

  1094. would come

  1095. after him

  1096. and put

  1097. their faith

  1098. in him

  1099. and say

  1100. I'm

  1101. with them.

  1102. And of

  1103. course what

  1104. is the

  1105. baptism thing

  1106. that we

  1107. do other

  1108. than us

  1109. declaring

  1110. that we

  1111. are with

  1112. him?

  1113. Yeah?

  1114. My,

  1115. his life

  1116. is my

  1117. life,

  1118. his death

  1119. is my

  1120. death,

  1121. the old

  1122. me has

  1123. gone,

  1124. the new

  1125. me has

  1126. risen,

  1127. the son

  1128. has united

  1129. himself to

  1130. me,

  1131. the father

  1132. loves me,

  1133. the spirit

  1134. is in

  1135. me,

  1136. and my

  1137. plea to

  1138. you this

  1139. morning if

  1140. you've

  1141. never done

  1142. that,

  1143. that you're

  1144. missing out

  1145. in such a

  1146. wonderful

  1147. blessing and

  1148. also it's

  1149. an obedience

  1150. thing that we

  1151. do because

  1152. it reminds us

  1153. of a

  1154. moment when

  1155. this is

  1156. true,

  1157. when it

  1158. first became

  1159. true,

  1160. he has

  1161. totally

  1162. united

  1163. himself to

  1164. us.

  1165. And friends,

  1166. we need to

  1167. know how

  1168. heaven feels

  1169. in this

  1170. moment.

  1171. Do you

  1172. know why?

  1173. We're

  1174. beginning to

  1175. close it

  1176. here.

  1177. Do you

  1178. know why?

  1179. Because this

  1180. gospel from

  1181. here on

  1182. out will

  1183. look anything

  1184. other than

  1185. victory for

  1186. Jesus.

  1187. is it?

  1188. Let me

  1189. put it

  1190. like this.

  1191. In 2007

  1192. there was

  1193. an experiment

  1194. that the

  1195. Washington

  1196. Post did

  1197. with

  1198. highly

  1199. acclaimed

  1200. violin

  1201. player called

  1202. Joshua

  1203. Bell.

  1204. And this

  1205. experiment,

  1206. it went

  1207. something like

  1208. this,

  1209. they got

  1210. Joshua Bell

  1211. to dress

  1212. up as a

  1213. busker.

  1214. And they

  1215. asked him

  1216. to go and

  1217. busk at

  1218. Washington,

  1219. D.C.

  1220. Subway.

  1221. And he

  1222. busked for

  1223. 45 minutes.

  1224. He played

  1225. some of the

  1226. finest classical

  1227. pieces ever

  1228. composed on

  1229. a Stradivarius

  1230. violin worth,

  1231. get this,

  1232. 3.5

  1233. million dollars.

  1234. And only

  1235. a handful

  1236. of people

  1237. stopped to

  1238. listen in

  1239. that 45

  1240. minutes.

  1241. A couple

  1242. clapped and

  1243. in the end

  1244. he raised

  1245. just over

  1246. 30 dollars.

  1247. true

  1248. brilliance,

  1249. utter

  1250. magnificence

  1251. but hidden

  1252. in plain

  1253. sight.

  1254. Why does

  1255. God want

  1256. us to

  1257. know in

  1258. chapter 3?

  1259. Why does

  1260. Matthew want

  1261. us to

  1262. know in

  1263. chapter 3

  1264. about who

  1265. the son

  1266. really is?

  1267. Because this

  1268. gospel from

  1269. here on in

  1270. is not

  1271. going to

  1272. look like

  1273. victory.

  1274. And of

  1275. course the

  1276. shape of

  1277. his baptism,

  1278. if you get

  1279. this, is a

  1280. prediction of

  1281. the shape of

  1282. his life.

  1283. From this

  1284. point on his

  1285. earthly life

  1286. will be

  1287. downward

  1288. shaped.

  1289. His family

  1290. won't

  1291. understand

  1292. him.

  1293. The religious

  1294. leaders will

  1295. reject him.

  1296. Everyday

  1297. people won't

  1298. get him.

  1299. Roman

  1300. soldiers will

  1301. mock him.

  1302. The Roman

  1303. authorities will

  1304. sentence him.

  1305. Roman soldiers

  1306. will kill him.

  1307. But as if

  1308. God is

  1309. saying,

  1310. or Matthew

  1311. is saying,

  1312. as you read

  1313. the rest of

  1314. this, don't

  1315. be fooled.

  1316. What's

  1317. kicking off

  1318. here in

  1319. chapter 3

  1320. is the

  1321. most

  1322. magnificence

  1323. of rescue

  1324. missions

  1325. from the

  1326. most willing

  1327. of saviors.

  1328. What is

  1329. this that

  1330. Jesus

  1331. is declaring?

  1332. Yeah,

  1333. I'm with

  1334. them.

  1335. man of

  1336. sorrows,

  1337. what a

  1338. name.

  1339. For

  1340. the son

  1341. of God

  1342. who came

  1343. ruined

  1344. sinners to

  1345. reclaim.

  1346. Hallelujah.

  1347. What a

  1348. saviour.

  1349. Let me

  1350. pray.

  1351. Father, we

  1352. just praise

  1353. you for who

  1354. you are here

  1355. today.

  1356. Lord, our

  1357. finite

  1358. minds cannot

  1359. get our

  1360. heads around

  1361. your true

  1362. glory and

  1363. splendor.

  1364. God, I

  1365. just

  1366. because we

  1367. can't fully,

  1368. fully comprehend

  1369. does not

  1370. mean there's

  1371. any reason

  1372. not to bow

  1373. in reverence

  1374. and worship.

  1375. Father, we

  1376. thank you.

  1377. We praise

  1378. you, Father.

  1379. We praise

  1380. you, Son.

  1381. We praise

  1382. you, Spirit.

  1383. We thank

  1384. you, Lord,

  1385. that you

  1386. are a

  1387. wonderful

  1388. God.

  1389. And Lord,

  1390. I just

  1391. pray that

  1392. this message

  1393. would come

  1394. home with

  1395. the exact

  1396. application

  1397. salvation

  1398. that it

  1399. needs to

  1400. have in

  1401. each of

  1402. our lives.

  1403. Lord, maybe

  1404. for some

  1405. of us here

  1406. today, it's

  1407. just to

  1408. wake up to

  1409. the wonder

  1410. of who

  1411. you are.

  1412. There's

  1413. nothing else

  1414. worth pursuing

  1415. with our

  1416. lives than

  1417. knowing you.

  1418. Maybe for

  1419. others, it's

  1420. to know that

  1421. Jesus is the

  1422. saviour who

  1423. got down into

  1424. the dirt.

  1425. He is God

  1426. with us, and

  1427. this just

  1428. means he's

  1429. God with

  1430. us in such

  1431. a perfect

  1432. and wonderful

  1433. way, that

  1434. he truly is

  1435. one who

  1436. knows what

  1437. it is.

  1438. And Father,

  1439. maybe even for

  1440. some of us

  1441. here today,

  1442. this would

  1443. be the

  1444. morning where

  1445. we grasp

  1446. your

  1447. outrageous

  1448. love for

  1449. us, and

  1450. that we

  1451. would turn

  1452. in repentance,

  1453. leave that

  1454. old life

  1455. behind, say

  1456. sorry for the

  1457. ways that we've

  1458. offended you and

  1459. lived our own

  1460. way, and turn

  1461. to you, the

  1462. giver of life.

  1463. And may today

  1464. be the day

  1465. of salvation.

  1466. So Father, we

  1467. thank you so

  1468. much for your

  1469. goodness.

  1470. Thank you for

  1471. your word that

  1472. we have it in

  1473. our language,

  1474. that we can

  1475. pick it up

  1476. and read.

  1477. Lord, be with

  1478. us as we

  1479. finish our

  1480. time together,

  1481. we pray.

  1482. In Jesus'

  1483. wonderful name

  1484. we ask.

  1485. Amen.
