  1. Thank you, Rachel. Good morning, everybody. Good to see you.

  2. As Craig has said, this is Passion for Life Month.

  3. ! Churches all around the city here in the East of Scotland Gospel Partnership,

  4. ! Churches up and down the entire country are wanting to share the good news that we can find life,

  5. true life, in Jesus Christ.

  6. Now, something that we all need in life is a sense that our lives are valuable,

  7. that what we do matters, that we are worthy of respect and love from other people.

  8. Nevertheless, many of us go through life with a sense that there is something missing,

  9. that in some way we are lacking, that we are inadequate, that we are unworthy.

  10. Sometimes we look in the mirror, we wake up, we look in the mirror, and we think to ourselves,

  11. I'm not enough. I'm not good enough. I'm not smart enough. I'm not fit enough. I'm not pretty enough.

  12. If the list could go on.

  13. So where can we find our worth, the worth that we need for a life that is full?

  14. Well, let me suggest to you, don't go looking at what you're made of.

  15. I've read that if you were to take a human being, boil them down to their chemical constituents,

  16. and then sell it, that you would be lucky to make enough money to buy two lattes around the corner at Costa.

  17. Your worth, when it comes to what you're made of, is not very much.

  18. So if you want to find your worth in life, you need to look somewhere else.

  19. And what we're going to see today is that in Christianity, you can discover that you are of infinite,

  20. inestimable worth, and in the sight of God, and in the person of Jesus Christ.

  21. But to get there, we're going to start off with a film, maybe one that you have seen.

  22. But if not, it's called Chariots of Fire, and let me tell you about it.

  23. Chariots of Fire tells the story of two British Olympic athletes.

  24. They are competing in the 1924 Paris Olympic Games.

  25. One of them is Harold Abrahams.

  26. The other is Eric Little.

  27. He healed from around the corner here in Edinburgh.

  28. Now, Abrahams was a Jewish man,

  29. and he had faced a lifetime of anti-Semitic discrimination and prejudice.

  30. But that didn't hold him back.

  31. Rather, it propelled him, motivated him, to try and prove everyone wrong about him.

  32. He wanted to prove his personal worth by winning a gold medal.

  33. But in the film, as Harold Abrahams is preparing for the 100-metre sprint final,

  34. there's this scene where he's in the changing rooms, he's with a friend,

  35. and he confines in his friend the stress and strain that he is feeling under.

  36. He says, this is what he's thinking whenever he's going to go out in the track.

  37. He says, I will raise my eyes and look down that corridor four feet wide

  38. with ten lonely seconds to justify my whole existence.

  39. Abraham there is confessing that he believed that his whole worth and significance in life

  40. rested upon his performance, on his success,

  41. in how he ran that race and what position he finished in that race.

  42. But he finishes confessing his self-doubt.

  43. He has ten lonely seconds to justify his whole existence.

  44. But will I?

  45. Will I achieve it?

  46. Will I be enough?

  47. Here's a man who is at the peak of his physical fitness.

  48. Here's a man who has trained for years.

  49. He's at the top of his game.

  50. But he doesn't know if it's going to be enough.

  51. Now, although a few of us here will be Olympic athletes,

  52. I think a lot of us have something in common with Harold Abrams.

  53. I think a lot of us are plagued with these kinds of self-doubts,

  54. these questions.

  55. Am I enough?

  56. I think that's partly because we live in a secular society here in 21st century Scotland.

  57. The scientists and the philosophers, they tell us that we have come from nothing

  58. for no ultimate purpose.

  59. That we are blobs of carbon floating from one meaningless existence to another.

  60. No wonder we feel inherently, intrinsically worthless.

  61. And that we have to instead invent and achieve our worth.

  62. And it always feels like Harold Abrams that we have to justify our existence to prove to ourselves,

  63. prove to other people that we are worthy.

  64. Every day.

  65. My value.

  66. Let me confess to you that I know an awful lot about this way of thinking.

  67. Tell you a little bit of my story.

  68. John, thank you for your story this morning, your testimony.

  69. I grew up in Northern Ireland during a time in our history that was known as the Troubles.

  70. A time whenever we teetered on the edge of civil war, two communities locked in conflict with each other.

  71. As a teenager, young teenager, I began to get drawn into trouble myself with the authorities.

  72. In the end, my family, we had to leave Northern Ireland to get away from it all

  73. and have a new start here in Scotland in the year 2001.

  74. And given the chance of that fresh start to leave behind the shame and the embarrassment and the trouble that I was in,

  75. I threw myself into achievement and performance, trying to atone for my sin and my shame.

  76. I worked hard to get the best grades, to try to be top of the class, to become head boy of the school,

  77. to go to a prestigious university, to get a good degree, to build my CV, to get a good job.

  78. I was falling into the Harold Abraham's trap.

  79. I was trying to justify my existence.

  80. I was trying to outweigh my bad, my mess with my accomplishments and achievements.

  81. Someone's called this treadmill life.

  82. Having to do more, do better, do it faster, just to keep standing up,

  83. just to have a modicum of sense for a fleeting second, I'm okay.

  84. I'm good enough.

  85. I measure up.

  86. And let me tell you from my own personal experience, it's exhausting.

  87. It's not satisfying.

  88. It's not life-giving.

  89. Some of you know that too.

  90. I'm here this morning to tell you the good news that you can get off the treadmill,

  91. that there is better life available in Jesus.

  92. And to see that, I want to contrast two very different strategies for finding your worth in life.

  93. They're going to be illustrated from the film, Chariots of Fire, that we've started with this morning.

  94. The first strategy is the Harold Abraham's way of life, and it says that your worth must be achieved.

  95. It's that equation we've already seen.

  96. My performance equals my worth, my value.

  97. This is the life of striving for success, to be the best or at least to be better than some other people,

  98. and then you can feel okay about yourself.

  99. I think many of us naturally, I think actually all of us come into this world thinking this way.

  100. This is our default setting, if you like.

  101. But the question is, does this strategy of achieving our worth, does it actually work?

  102. Does it pay off?

  103. And I think you'll find, if you look at the people who have tasted success, who have reached the top,

  104. I think you'll find that they have discovered it doesn't work.

  105. It doesn't satisfy.

  106. Let me give you a few examples.

  107. There's this man, Johnny Wilkinson, one of England's best rugby players.

  108. He led England to victory in the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

  109. He scored his winning kick with only 23 seconds left on the clock.

  110. A few hours later, he should have been out with his teammates.

  111. He should have been celebrating.

  112. This was the greatest achievement of his career.

  113. But he wasn't out with his friends celebrating.

  114. He was alone in his hotel room drinking.

  115. In the grip of performance anxiety, thinking to himself,

  116. I'm only as good as my last kick.

  117. Yes, his last kick had won the Rugby World Cup.

  118. But what about next time?

  119. What if it went wrong next time?

  120. Who is he then?

  121. Johnny Wilkinson.

  122. Someone else, maybe you know him.

  123. Jim Carrey.

  124. Famous film star, comedian.

  125. He's played many memorable roles on the big screen.

  126. He's won many awards.

  127. He's loved by many.

  128. But he confesses that he is nagged by this sense of not being enough and not having enough.

  129. He once said this,

  130. I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of

  131. so they can see that it's not the answer.

  132. Someone else has reflected.

  133. People may spend their whole lives climbing the ladder of success

  134. only to find, once they reach the top,

  135. that it's against the wrong wall.

  136. I want to do any of these testimonies resonate with you

  137. and with the way you think and the way you feel

  138. and what you have experienced in life.

  139. I think there will be quite a few of us will resonate something here.

  140. But just as some people seek to justify their whole existence

  141. through their academic performance,

  142. their business success,

  143. their creative brilliance,

  144. their political activism,

  145. many other people around the world approach religion in the same way.

  146. They use their religious performance to seek the ultimate verdict,

  147. to earn the approval and the blessing of God Almighty.

  148. They think that they can do good things

  149. and work their way up into God's good books.

  150. You look around the global marketplace of ideas,

  151. philosophies, religions,

  152. there are an awful lot of them

  153. and they're all very different.

  154. But in this one respect,

  155. most of them are the same.

  156. It's about you.

  157. And it hinges on your performance.

  158. If you are going to receive God's salvation,

  159. his wisdom,

  160. his blessing,

  161. then you better work hard

  162. because it's on you.

  163. In Islam, it's the five pillars.

  164. You've got to do them.

  165. In Buddhism, it's the five noble truths.

  166. It's the eightfold path.

  167. You need to walk it.

  168. It's almost like there's this ladder

  169. from earth to heaven.

  170. And if you're going to get to heaven,

  171. you've got to climb up the ladder.

  172. It's on you.

  173. And if you don't make it,

  174. well, that's your fault.

  175. Christian author Tim Keller's written this.

  176. He says,

  177. the atheists might say

  178. they get their self-image from being a good person.

  179. Performance leads to the verdict.

  180. For the Buddhists too,

  181. performance leads to the verdict.

  182. If you are a Muslim,

  183. performance leads to the verdict.

  184. All this means that every day

  185. you are in the courtroom.

  186. Every day you are on trial.

  187. That's the problem.

  188. That's the problem of all man-made human religion.

  189. It all hinges on you

  190. and what you do

  191. and how well you do it

  192. and how consistently you do it

  193. and for how long you do it.

  194. But there is one religion

  195. in the global marketplace

  196. that is not that way at all.

  197. And it is Christianity.

  198. It does not hinge upon you

  199. and what you do.

  200. It hinges on what God,

  201. who God is

  202. and what he has done.

  203. If there's a ladder,

  204. well, he's come down the ladder

  205. and he's done everything

  206. to lift us up in his hands.

  207. Kim Keller writes,

  208. uniquely in Christianity,

  209. the verdict leads to the performance.

  210. Jesus Christ,

  211. he releases us from the courtroom.

  212. He announces God's verdict

  213. on the last day,

  214. this day,

  215. that we are loved

  216. and we are pardoned.

  217. For the Christian,

  218. because I am loved

  219. and accepted by God

  220. and being pardoned for my sins,

  221. that's why I want to live for God

  222. and do things for God.

  223. I live from the verdict,

  224. not for the verdict.

  225. So that's the second strategy

  226. I would like us to think about now.

  227. The world tells us

  228. that your worth

  229. is something that has to be achieved.

  230. But Christianity announces,

  231. no, your worth

  232. is something that can be received

  233. as a gift

  234. from the hands of Jesus Christ.

  235. And Jesus taught

  236. that all-important life lesson

  237. in the passage

  238. that Rachel just read to us

  239. in Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  240. To set the scene

  241. a few chapters earlier,

  242. Jesus began gathering

  243. his first followers.

  244. They were called his disciples.

  245. It just means students.

  246. In Jewish society,

  247. there was a great deal

  248. of prestige

  249. associated with being

  250. the student

  251. or the disciple of a rabbi.

  252. In fact,

  253. the rabbis would have

  254. the ability

  255. to handpick their disciples,

  256. usually from the best schools

  257. or the most rich

  258. and influential families.

  259. But that's not the way

  260. that Jesus went about

  261. calling his followers.

  262. He didn't choose

  263. followers from the elites.

  264. No, he chose

  265. ordinary people,

  266. perhaps people like you

  267. and me.

  268. And before these people

  269. had done anything

  270. to show themselves

  271. as being useful

  272. to Jesus,

  273. to do anything worthy

  274. of being recipients

  275. of Jesus' attention,

  276. Jesus approached them

  277. and he invited them,

  278. come and follow me.

  279. Come and find what life's

  280. all about.

  281. Come and follow me.

  282. Jesus invited them

  283. to join his mission

  284. to spread the good news

  285. that the kingdom of heaven

  286. was drawing near

  287. in himself.

  288. And after a period

  289. of living with Jesus

  290. and learning from Jesus,

  291. the disciples were commissioned

  292. to go and share

  293. the good news

  294. about Jesus

  295. with others.

  296. That's what happens

  297. at the start

  298. of Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  299. And then we jump

  300. to these verses

  301. midway through the chapter

  302. when Jesus' followers

  303. return.

  304. And they bring

  305. all their stories,

  306. all their reports

  307. of all that they've seen,

  308. all that they have done.

  309. And that's when we read

  310. in verse 17.

  311. The 72 returned

  312. with joy saying,

  313. Lord,

  314. even the demons

  315. are subject to us

  316. in your name.

  317. And Jesus said to them,

  318. I saw Satan

  319. fall like lightning

  320. from heaven.

  321. Behold,

  322. I have given you authority.

  323. Nevertheless,

  324. do not rejoice in this,

  325. that the spirits

  326. are subject to you.

  327. but rejoice

  328. that your names

  329. are written in heaven.

  330. Now naturally,

  331. the disciples coming back

  332. from their mission trip,

  333. they're full of excitement.

  334. They're filled

  335. with stories

  336. of what they've seen

  337. God doing through them.

  338. Their work

  339. has been a great success.

  340. They have preached

  341. powerfully to crowds.

  342. They have performed

  343. in Jesus' name

  344. signs and wonders.

  345. In the name of Jesus,

  346. people who have been

  347. possessed,

  348. tormented,

  349. and abused

  350. by the spiritual

  351. forces of evil

  352. have been set free.

  353. If your words,

  354. my words,

  355. had that kind of power

  356. to transform people's lives,

  357. then we would be

  358. pretty excited too.

  359. We'd be writing about it

  360. all over our

  361. social media feeds.

  362. The reason why

  363. the disciples speaking

  364. in Jesus' name

  365. have so much power

  366. is because in Jesus,

  367. the God of heaven

  368. has come into this world

  369. to overthrow

  370. the powers of evil.

  371. That's why Jesus here

  372. talks about seeing

  373. Satan fall

  374. like lightning.

  375. He's being cast down

  376. off his throne.

  377. His kingdom

  378. is crumbling.

  379. His captives,

  380. his prisoners,

  381. are being set free

  382. in the name of Jesus.

  383. But what I want to

  384. focus on here

  385. is how Jesus

  386. responds to his disciples

  387. and how he reframes

  388. their way of thinking

  389. about life.

  390. Notice that he

  391. shifts their focus

  392. away from what

  393. they have done

  394. and their performance,

  395. what they have done,

  396. to instead think about

  397. who they belong to.

  398. Jesus is changing

  399. the equation.

  400. Not my performance

  401. equals my worth,

  402. but no,

  403. my worth comes

  404. from whom

  405. I belong to.

  406. Notice Jesus says,

  407. don't rejoice in this,

  408. that the spirits

  409. are subject to you.

  410. Instead, rejoice

  411. that your names

  412. are written

  413. in heaven.

  414. Don't rejoice, guys,

  415. on what you've done.

  416. rejoice that you

  417. belong to God.

  418. That's the most

  419. important thing.

  420. Because even if it had

  421. gone really badly wrong,

  422. you would still

  423. belong to God.

  424. Jesus says to them,

  425. don't rejoice in your

  426. signs and wonders

  427. you've performed.

  428. Perhaps Jesus might say

  429. to us,

  430. don't rejoice in your

  431. last essay mark.

  432. Don't rejoice in your

  433. job title.

  434. don't rejoice in the

  435. letters and qualifications

  436. after your name.

  437. Don't rejoice in how

  438. many goals you've scored

  439. in the last match or

  440. your golf handicap when

  441. you last played.

  442. Don't rejoice in your

  443. good looks.

  444. Don't rejoice in how

  445. big your house is or

  446. how flashy your car is.

  447. Don't rejoice in how

  448. many people are friends

  449. of yours on Facebook or

  450. how many people follow

  451. you on Instagram.

  452. Abraham.

  453. Jesus wants us to see

  454. that all of these

  455. performance indicators

  456. on earth,

  457. they're not the main

  458. thing.

  459. They're not the most

  460. important thing.

  461. Instead he says the

  462. most important thing is

  463. your name being written

  464. in heaven.

  465. I think that means and

  466. signifies if your name

  467. is written in heaven,

  468. it means that you are a

  469. member of the family of

  470. God.

  471. That you have a home

  472. reserved for you in

  473. heaven.

  474. It's a little bit like

  475. what happened whenever

  476. you were born into this

  477. world.

  478. Your parents when you

  479. were born they were

  480. given by the hospital a

  481. little slip of paper and

  482. they had to make an

  483. appointment to go down

  484. into town to meet the

  485. registrar and register

  486. your birth.

  487. And when they did that

  488. your name went on the

  489. central register of

  490. births.

  491. And then they got

  492. usually I think maybe in

  493. the olden days you got

  494. to you got for free.

  495. Now we've got to pay for

  496. the privilege to get a

  497. birth certificate.

  498. So if you've got a

  499. birth certificate well that

  500. says well you've been

  501. born in this country,

  502. this is your family,

  503. these are your people

  504. and it opens up other

  505. things.

  506. You can get a passport and

  507. you can do all these

  508. other things.

  509. If your name is on the

  510. central register, well

  511. you're in the family.

  512. This is your home

  513. country.

  514. Well if your name is

  515. written in heaven, well

  516. that means that that is

  517. your family too.

  518. That you are a member of

  519. God's family and you have

  520. a home and a place

  521. reserved for you in

  522. heaven.

  523. And Jesus wants us to

  524. understand that that

  525. fact is far more

  526. important.

  527. Whom we belong to is

  528. far more important than

  529. anything else that we can

  530. do on this earth.

  531. Our worth, our

  532. significance, our value

  533. in life comes through

  534. knowing the God who made

  535. us and taking up our

  536. place in his great story,

  537. the unique place in his

  538. great story that he has

  539. set out for each one of

  540. us.

  541. There's a Christian

  542. psychiatrist called

  543. Glenn Harrison who's

  544. written all about this in

  545. one of his books called

  546. The Big Eagle Trip.

  547. As a psychiatrist he

  548. reviews all the

  549. literature thinking about

  550. this phenomenon throughout

  551. the last 20, 30 years

  552. that's been trying to

  553. help people who feel bad

  554. about themselves feel

  555. better by boosting their

  556. self-esteem, by thinking

  557. more positively about

  558. themselves, by reciting

  559. more positive self-talk,

  560. work.

  561. But Harrison points out

  562. that the studies and

  563. literature shows that it

  564. doesn't actually work or

  565. at least it certainly

  566. doesn't help the people

  567. who most need the help.

  568. And he says the reason

  569. is this, it's really hard

  570. to believe your own

  571. propaganda.

  572. It's really hard to

  573. believe that things you're

  574. saying to yourself, I am

  575. great, I am big, I am

  576. strong, I am.

  577. It's really hard to believe

  578. that for a long time.

  579. He says we need a better

  580. story.

  581. Rather than a bigger,

  582. better view of ourselves

  583. that we tell ourselves,

  584. instead we need a bigger,

  585. better view of God and

  586. understand that if he loves

  587. us, if we are precious and

  588. valuable in his sight, if he

  589. has a place for us in his

  590. great story, well that's the

  591. thing that gives me worth.

  592. That's the thing that makes

  593. my life worth living.

  594. That's the thing that will

  595. really help.

  596. Instead of telling us to love

  597. ourselves more, Jesus comes

  598. into this world and tells us

  599. that in God's sight, you are

  600. loved.

  601. And God's love, it is not

  602. based on our performance,

  603. because based on our

  604. performance, God has every

  605. reason not to love us.

  606. There is an awful lot that is

  607. true about us which is

  608. unlovely.

  609. We might be able to hide it

  610. from other people.

  611. We might be able to put on

  612. a good front.

  613. We might be able to filter

  614. our pictures when it goes up

  615. on social media.

  616. But God sees the real us,

  617. warts and all, when nobody

  618. else is there.

  619. He sees what goes on in our

  620. hearts and what goes on in

  621. our, sorry, wrong place,

  622. hearts and minds.

  623. He sees it all.

  624. He knows.

  625. He knows the truth about

  626. David Nixon.

  627. It's not pretty.

  628. It's not lovable.

  629. But still, he chooses to

  630. love us.

  631. Not on the basis of our

  632. performance, but on the

  633. basis of his grace.

  634. God sees us at our worst

  635. and he still sends Jesus,

  636. his son, to save us out of

  637. that mess and to clean us

  638. up.

  639. The Bible tells us in Romans

    Romans 5:8

  640. chapter 5, verse 8, that

  641. God has demonstrated his

  642. love for us in this, that

  643. while we were still sinners,

  644. Christ died for us.

  645. Someone has said that the

  646. cross of Jesus Christ is the

  647. pulpit of God's love.

  648. Jesus proclaims to the

  649. world, God loves you no

  650. matter what you've done, no

  651. matter what you've not done.

  652. He made you.

  653. He loves you.

  654. He wants to save you.

  655. And everyone who responds to

  656. that, Jesus' invitation, come

  657. and follow me.

  658. They're the ones whose names

  659. are written in heaven.

  660. The good news about having

  661. your name written in heaven

  662. is that just as your name is

  663. written in heaven, not on the

  664. basis of your performance, not

  665. on the basis of anything you've

  666. done, but that also means that

  667. it cannot be erased or removed

  668. on the basis of anything that

  669. you go on to do or fail to do.

  670. Do you see that?

  671. Your name has been written

  672. there in the blood, the

  673. indelible ink, the blood of

  674. Jesus Christ, and it cannot be

  675. erased.

  676. You ever got blood on some

  677. clothes?

  678. You ever had it woken up and

  679. your nose been bleeding and

  680. it's leaked onto your pillow?

  681. Do you know how hard that is to

  682. get out?

  683. Almost impossible.

  684. Well, your name in heaven has

  685. been written in the indelible

  686. ink of the blood of Jesus

  687. Christ, the Son of God.

  688. It can't be removed.

  689. It cannot be erased.

  690. It is safe and secure forever.

  691. Jesus has done everything that

  692. is necessary.

  693. He has come from heaven to

  694. earth.

  695. He has gone to the cross

  696. bearing your sins.

  697. He has died and risen again to

  698. bring you back to God, to lift

  699. you up to heaven.

  700. Again, Tim Keller has written

  701. for Christians, the verdict is

  702. in.

  703. And now I can perform on the

  704. basis of the verdict.

  705. Because God loves me and

  706. accepts me, I do not have to do

  707. things just to build up my

  708. resume.

  709. I do not have to do things to

  710. make me look good.

  711. I can do things for the joy of

  712. doing them.

  713. I can help people to help

  714. people, not so I can feel better

  715. about myself, not so I can fill up

  716. the emptiness.

  717. Jesus faced the trial that should

  718. be ours so that we do not have to

  719. face any more trials.

  720. And so in Luke chapter 10, Jesus

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  721. wants to save and deliver the

  722. disciples from the performance

  723. trap mindset.

  724. He wants to get their eyes off

  725. what they've done and wants them to

  726. focus and rejoice instead on whom

  727. they belong to.

  728. They don't have to prove themselves.

  729. They don't have to justify their

  730. existence.

  731. They don't have to earn God's

  732. blessings.

  733. No, Jesus assures them and he

  734. assures us.

  735. The verdict is in.

  736. We can be loved and accepted on the

  737. basis of what Jesus has done.

  738. That changes everything.

  739. There's no ladder to climb.

  740. There's no treadmill to have to run.

  741. It's done.

  742. Your worth can be received as a gift.

  743. So we started off with the film

  744. Chariots of Fire.

  745. We thought a fair bit about

  746. Harold Abrahams and that way of

  747. thinking, that way of working, that

  748. way of thinking that worth in life

  749. it has to be achieved by the things

  750. that we do.

  751. But there is an alternative as we've

  752. gone on to see.

  753. That alternative way of life is what

  754. we've called your worth being

  755. received as a gift.

  756. In the film, Eric Little is the

  757. personification of this second way

  758. of living.

  759. Eric Little was not just a great

  760. athlete but he was also a Christian.

  761. He understood that his life did not

  762. depend upon his performance.

  763. Little himself went on to win the gold

  764. medal in a race he shouldn't have run

  765. that he hadn't trained for.

  766. He went on to win gold.

  767. But that wasn't the thing that

  768. defined him in life.

  769. In fact, he gave it all up and went

  770. off to be a missionary in China and

  771. ultimately would die in a Japanese

  772. internment camp.

  773. In the film, there's this scene between

  774. Eric and his sister.

  775. He's telling her of his plans to give

  776. up his athletics career, which had

  777. brought him so much fame, could give

  778. him so much fortune.

  779. But give it all up and go and be a

  780. missionary to China.

  781. And his sister is trying to talk him

  782. out of it, saying, what are you

  783. thinking?

  784. What are you doing?

  785. Eric explains, I believe that God

  786. made me for a purpose.

  787. That's China.

  788. But he also made me fast.

  789. And when I run, I feel his pleasure.

  790. You see, Eric Little was able to just

  791. enjoy life and the gifts that God gave

  792. him in life because he knew that he was

  793. running a greater race.

  794. That his life was part of God's bigger

  795. story.

  796. That's where his meaning was.

  797. That's where his worth came from.

  798. From the God who made him, who loved

  799. him, who saved him.

  800. And that's the kind of life that you and

  801. I can enjoy.

  802. If we would hear his invitation, Jesus'

  803. words to us are, come and follow me.

  804. And all you have to do is say yes.

  805. And then you can rejoice that your name

  806. is written in heaven.

  807. Didn't get there by anything you did.

  808. And it can't be taken away by anything

  809. that you go on to do or fail to do.

  810. That's where your security and worth

  811. and value can come from.

  812. You're here this morning, you don't know

  813. Jesus and you've never said yes to

  814. Jesus.

  815. This morning is a chance to be able to

  816. say yes to him.

  817. And maybe in a moment or two, Craig

  818. is going to come and he's going to tell

  819. us what you can do to find out more

  820. about Jesus.

  821. If you'd like to find out more about

  822. him and his passion for your life.

  823. Not just now, but for eternity.

  824. But first let me pray.

  825. Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you love us.

  826. Thank you that you have come to deliver

  827. us from our sin,

  828. but also from just the exhausting

  829. performance trap and all of the anxiety

  830. that comes from a life lived where all

  831. depends on us.

  832. Thank you, Lord.

  833. It's not true.

  834. It doesn't have to be that way.

  835. Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you've come

  836. and you've done so much for us to show

  837. us your love.

  838. Thank you that you have prepared a place

  839. for each one of us in your great story

  840. so that we might live for you and make

  841. a difference for you in this world.

  842. But thank you, Lord, that our hope is

  843. that our names can be written in heaven.

  844. Thank you that it doesn't depend all on us.

  845. Thank you that it depends on you.

  846. Thank you for the freedom that represents.

  847. And I pray that you would help each of us

  848. to leave here this morning,

  849. tasting the sweetness of that,

  850. the lies that we often hear in our heads,

  851. the things that we think when we look

  852. in the mirror.

  853. Pray, Lord, today your voice, your words

  854. would speak louder than all that stuff,

  855. that you would set us free.

  856. We pray these things in Jesus' name.

  857. Amen.
