  1. Amen, folks. Well, with that passage open in front of you, here's a job that is available up and down the UK. It does wonders for your step count. And depending on where you are in the UK, it could earn you between 12 and 18 pounds an hour. You ready for this? Who fancies a new challenge in life being a walking billboard?

  2. I mean, who wouldn't want to walk around the streets of Yorkshire advertising Cherry Bakewell Brew? Just thought I'd put that there to intrigue you. But you'll know the kind of thing, I'm sure, if you think about it. Walking adverts, walking billboards. If you're a Christian here today, that's exactly what we're going to see Jesus say that we are. Walking adverts for the kingdom of God.

  3. Now, if you've got Matthew chapter 5 there, we're in this series in Matthew's Gospel. We're at the portion called the Sermon on the Mount. We began it last week with Wayne. And I hope you had your dose of American enthusiasm. You're getting some Scottish accent today. But Wayne kicked us off in this portion of Matthew's Gospel, the Sermon on the Mount.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  4. Really, it's a speech that is widely accepted to have fundamentally shaped Western morality for generations.

  5. And don't just take my word for it. Here is former US Congressman Daniel Webster.

  6. He said this, he said,

  7. The Sermon on the Mount cannot be a merely human production.

  8. This belief enters into the very depth of my conscience.

  9. The whole history of man proves it.

  10. From what I can tell, the guy wasn't a believer.

  11. But it's really interesting what he made of this sermon.

  12. And I think whoever you are here today, whatever you've brought in here,

  13. whatever you think about the God of the Bible,

  14. can I suggest that what he's saying there

  15. gives you a reason to listen to this.

  16. Because really, this has impacted our society, what Jesus is saying here.

  17. And it touches on so many of the live issues in our culture right now.

  18. And so that's why this is worth a listen.

  19. Let Jesus intrigue you with what he says here.

  20. But what we need to appreciate as we step into this,

  21. is that this isn't Jesus giving the world some ethical top tips.

  22. Like some kind of first century Stacey Dooley on an episode of Sort Your Life Out.

  23. This is not what this is.

  24. Have a look at verse 1. Come with me and see it.

  25. Others may be in earshot.

  26. But Jesus has his disciples in his sights.

  27. Do you see that?

  28. Verse 1, chapter 5.

  29. And in this sermon, he's teaching them

  30. what life inside the kingdom of God looks like.

  31. So this is what happens in a human heart

  32. when the king moves in.

  33. You want to think about it like that.

  34. This is what happens in a human heart when the king moves in.

  35. And who are Jesus' disciples at this point in time in Matthew's gospel?

  36. They are a small, ragtag, unimpressive-looking bunch of newbies.

  37. And if we're to get the power of this today,

  38. we need to enter their world.

  39. A religious world that's dominated by the Pharisees and the teachers of the law.

  40. Who both look the part and sound the part when it comes to godliness.

  41. This is their world, okay?

  42. Because what the Pharisees and the teachers of the law have done

  43. is that they've taken the Ten Commandments

  44. that God gave to Moses to give to the people

  45. and the surrounding legislation that God had given his people in the Old Testament.

  46. And what they've done is produced their own commentary on it.

  47. And they've created this whole spider web worth of rules and regulations

  48. that you need to keep to show that you're in the club.

  49. I love how Sinclair Ferguson sums this up.

  50. A little bit Scottish humour, but I think this makes the point.

  51. With some 248 regulations and 365 prohibitions to deal with,

  52. salvation was certainly for the professionals.

  53. Do you like that?

  54. So if you're a country bumpkin disciple at this point in time,

  55. and this is what you're looking at religiously, so to speak,

  56. what do you think you are thinking?

  57. You're probably feeling intimidated, aren't you?

  58. Add to that the fact that you've just heard Jesus.

  59. Do you just see in the immediate verses from verse 11?

  60. You've just heard Jesus tell you to expect persecution as you follow him.

  61. And with that backdrop of intimidation and questions,

  62. have a look at the phrase that Jesus uses in this chapter at verse 13 and verse 15.

  63. You've got to see this.

  64. This isn't a beat-up sermon from Jesus.

  65. Like some kind of boardroom encounter with Alan Sugar.

  66. What were you thinking?

  67. Who's responsible for the failure of this task?

  68. Why are you not better?

  69. Why did you do it like that?

  70. What a mess that you've made of things.

  71. This isn't a beat-up sermon from Jesus.

  72. This is a chin-up sermon from Jesus.

  73. He doesn't say, you've got to see this,

  74. He doesn't say,

  75. go and be the salt of the earth.

  76. Or, one day, one day, you'll be the light of the world.

  77. What does He say?

  78. See it there.

  79. He says,

  80. you are.

  81. You see it?

  82. So this is something that's already true of the disciples

  83. because of their faith in Him.

  84. The logic of everything that follows is,

  85. be what I've made you to be.

  86. Be who you are.

  87. That's a game changer for how you hear this sermon.

  88. And so with that backdrop,

  89. can I just say that there's two things that Jesus says to them

  90. in these verses that we need to hear.

  91. And then I want to give us one challenge and one encouragement.

  92. That sound okay?

  93. Two things Jesus says,

  94. one challenge, one encouragement.

  95. Here's the first thing,

  96. and this is verses 13 to 15.

  97. Remember, Jesus speaking to the disciples,

  98. speaking to them.

  99. He's saying,

  100. firstly, you are a blessed people,

  101. don't doubt it.

  102. And that's the heart behind the two images

  103. that Jesus uses here.

  104. Do you see them?

  105. Salt and light.

  106. Light.

  107. Now you might hear those words

  108. and immediately your mind is off

  109. in a million different directions.

  110. You're kind of a greyhound

  111. that's been released from the tracks

  112. and you're hunting that rabbit.

  113. Your mind is going in all sorts of places

  114. and you're playing this mental game of articulate,

  115. thinking salt, preserving, purifying,

  116. flavoursome, light, illuminating, attractive, healing.

  117. And those things may well be there,

  118. but the question to ask with this stuff is always,

  119. what would the original readers have understood?

  120. Try the first one at verse 13, okay?

  121. Salt.

  122. They hear that word,

  123. and I'll put it to you likely,

  124. that they would have clicked

  125. that salt throughout the Old Testament

  126. was a symbol of the covenant relationship

  127. that existed between God and his people.

  128. Yeah?

  129. And if that's the case,

  130. what is Jesus saying here?

  131. He's saying,

  132. even if the world hates you,

  133. even if the Pharisees

  134. and the teachers of the law persecute you,

  135. I want you to know

  136. that you are my called out people.

  137. Right?

  138. I've got my heart on you.

  139. I've saved you out of the world.

  140. You are mine.

  141. Now, what an encouragement

  142. that must have been for the disciples

  143. if you're looking at this world

  144. and you're feeling intimidated.

  145. You are the salt of the earth.

  146. And what is it about salt?

  147. Do you see that he draws attention to?

  148. He draws attention to its taste,

  149. which I think

  150. is a direct shot

  151. at the Pharisees,

  152. the religious pretenders of the day.

  153. Jesus is saying of them,

  154. I know that they look like salt.

  155. I know that they sound like salt.

  156. But would you believe me

  157. that their inner lives

  158. tell a different story?

  159. And carry that logic

  160. on to the second image

  161. at verse 13.

  162. What is it?

  163. It's light.

  164. You see it?

  165. Now, it's a kind of double whammy here.

  166. It's light,

  167. but he combines it

  168. with another image.

  169. I love how Jesus uses images

  170. and metaphors.

  171. It's great, isn't it?

  172. To help us picture it.

  173. What's the second one?

  174. It's a city on a hill.

  175. Now, again,

  176. what would they have first thought of?

  177. Combining light

  178. and a city on a hill.

  179. More likely they would have thought

  180. of the city of Jerusalem.

  181. And what was God's heart

  182. for the city?

  183. That the godliness

  184. of the people

  185. who live in the city,

  186. because they're infatuated

  187. with Yahweh,

  188. with the Lord,

  189. would act like a blazing beacon

  190. to the world,

  191. compelling the world

  192. to come in and see

  193. how good the Lord is.

  194. And we're going to show you

  195. by the devotion of our lives

  196. how great and good

  197. this God is.

  198. How marvelous is the God

  199. who dwells in the city

  200. and the God who has called

  201. us his people.

  202. Come in and see.

  203. Isaiah 60, verse 3.

    Isaiah 60:3

  204. Nations will come to your light

  205. and kings

  206. to the brightness

  207. of your dawn.

  208. And so Jesus is saying

  209. to his disciples,

  210. as you live

  211. kingdom lives,

  212. as you embrace

  213. salt and light living,

  214. you are everything

  215. that Jerusalem

  216. was supposed to be

  217. but wasn't.

  218. the church,

  219. through its good deeds,

  220. through its love

  221. for the Lord

  222. that just expresses

  223. itself publicly,

  224. is a light to the world.

  225. And the question then

  226. that follows, I guess,

  227. is what are the good deeds

  228. that Jesus has in mind?

  229. Is he just throwing

  230. the net really wide

  231. and saying any good thing

  232. that you do is a worship

  233. to the Lord?

  234. I think he's a lot more

  235. specific than that

  236. because of what follows.

  237. What are the good deeds

  238. that Jesus has in mind?

  239. Here's the second thing

  240. that Jesus says

  241. and this is verses 17 to 20.

  242. You see a phony righteousness,

  243. don't buy it.

  244. And without a shadow of a doubt,

  245. we're back with our boys,

  246. the Pharisees again,

  247. who think that when it comes

  248. to the law,

  249. Jesus isn't taking it

  250. seriously enough.

  251. In fact, all he's doing

  252. is lowering the bar

  253. to which Jesus says,

  254. I've not come to abolish the law,

  255. but rather,

  256. and see the word that he uses,

  257. not explain,

  258. not keep,

  259. but fulfill it.

  260. Now that word means

  261. that we need to do

  262. a lot more work

  263. to try and understand

  264. what he's saying,

  265. right?

  266. It's a lot more holistic.

  267. Fulfill.

  268. In what ways

  269. has Jesus come

  270. to fulfill the law?

  271. You ready for this?

  272. Can I give you

  273. three quick ways?

  274. Now we are skimming

  275. the slither of the top

  276. of the iceberg here,

  277. but go with me

  278. and we can run with this

  279. in growth groups

  280. during the week.

  281. But it's really important

  282. for understanding

  283. the Old Testament.

  284. We can't understand

  285. the New without the Old.

  286. We can't understand

  287. the Old without the New.

  288. Do you know why that is?

  289. Because this is one story.

  290. Three quick things

  291. fulfill means.

  292. Number one,

  293. it means that Jesus

  294. is the one

  295. who it all points to.

  296. Every person,

  297. prophet,

  298. priest,

  299. king,

  300. every system,

  301. the sacrificial system

  302. for sin,

  303. every problem.

  304. How can sinners stand

  305. to be right

  306. with a holy God?

  307. How can God

  308. be both loving

  309. and just?

  310. Every promise

  311. of a future,

  312. new heavens

  313. and a new earth

  314. where righteousness

  315. reigns.

  316. You've heard that phrase,

  317. all roads lead to Rome.

  318. Well,

  319. can I just

  320. kind of spin on it

  321. a bit and say

  322. that all the Old Testament

  323. roads lead to

  324. the personal work

  325. of Jesus?

  326. And see,

  327. when you understand that,

  328. you begin to read it

  329. differently.

  330. Right?

  331. Love a murder mystery novel.

  332. More watch them these days

  333. than read them,

  334. but the thing is

  335. with a murder mystery,

  336. you can only watch it twice,

  337. right?

  338. You watch it all the way

  339. through first time,

  340. not knowing how it's

  341. going to end,

  342. how are all these

  343. tensions and puzzles

  344. and threads

  345. going to find their conclusion?

  346. And once you find

  347. the conclusion,

  348. you go back

  349. and you watch it again,

  350. but the thing is,

  351. because you know

  352. where it's all going,

  353. you begin to see,

  354. oh,

  355. that's what that was about.

  356. And that's what that was about.

  357. And that's how we understand

  358. the Old Testament.

  359. Jesus

  360. fulfills it.

  361. Right?

  362. Number two,

  363. Jesus is the one

  364. who perfectly

  365. keeps it.

  366. So his life

  367. was one of

  368. perfect obedience

  369. to the law.

  370. And it wasn't

  371. begrudging obedience.

  372. It was a delight

  373. for Jesus

  374. to obey

  375. the law

  376. of his father.

  377. The heart

  378. of the gospel

  379. is that Jesus

  380. lived the life

  381. we couldn't live.

  382. And we need

  383. in order to ascend

  384. the hill

  385. of the Lord.

  386. But by coming

  387. to him

  388. at the moment

  389. we believe in him,

  390. we are united

  391. to him

  392. and Jesus

  393. shares

  394. his perfect

  395. life with us.

  396. he takes

  397. our sin

  398. and we are

  399. caught up

  400. in his

  401. perfect righteousness

  402. and obedience.

  403. He's come

  404. to fulfill it.

  405. He's come

  406. to live it out.

  407. But number three,

  408. and this is maybe

  409. one you haven't

  410. thought about before,

  411. is that he

  412. shows us

  413. what

  414. obedience

  415. looks like.

  416. So if you're

  417. asking yourself,

  418. what does it mean

  419. for me to

  420. obey?

  421. If you're

  422. asking yourself,

  423. what is God

  424. the Spirit

  425. inside of me

  426. like a master

  427. sculptor?

  428. What is he

  429. chiseling away

  430. from my

  431. character?

  432. And what is he

  433. forming me

  434. into?

  435. Whose likeness

  436. is he shaping

  437. me into?

  438. The answer

  439. is

  440. Jesus.

  441. Friends,

  442. the Pharisees

  443. think that Jesus

  444. is relaxing

  445. the law

  446. because he

  447. won't do it

  448. their way.

  449. But have a

  450. look at

  451. verse 21.

  452. You need to

  453. jog on a

  454. wee bit here,

  455. right?

  456. 21,

  457. 27,

  458. and 31.

  459. And just

  460. take in

  461. the repeated

  462. refrain at the

  463. beginning of

  464. each section.

  465. All right,

  466. give you a second.

  467. 21,

  468. 27,

  469. 31.

  470. What's the

  471. repeated

  472. refrain?

  473. you have

  474. heard it

  475. said.

  476. Not you

  477. have read

  478. it written.

  479. Do you see

  480. that?

  481. Really important.

  482. So Jesus is

  483. helping his

  484. disciples see

  485. the real

  486. reason that

  487. the Pharisees

  488. have created

  489. all these

  490. rules and

  491. regulations.

  492. The real

  493. thing is

  494. going on

  495. here is

  496. that they

  497. are lowering

  498. the bar

  499. so that

  500. they can

  501. say that

  502. they've got

  503. over the

  504. bar.

  505. Parents,

  506. do you find

  507. this?

  508. If you want

  509. to think

  510. about it

  511. like this,

  512. I'm a

  513. simple person,

  514. my mind

  515. works like

  516. this.

  517. This is

  518. what happens

  519. as a

  520. parent,

  521. the battle

  522. that you

  523. face every

  524. meal time.

  525. Now,

  526. you put

  527. five bits

  528. of broccoli

  529. on the

  530. plate,

  531. and what

  532. does it

  533. turn into

  534. with the

  535. kids?

  536. A

  537. negotiation

  538. game,

  539. doesn't it?

  540. Won't

  541. negotiate

  542. with

  543. terrorists,

  544. but I'm

  545. being held

  546. to ransom

  547. around my

  548. own table

  549. by a

  550. five-year-old.

  551. And you

  552. start,

  553. you say,

  554. if you eat

  555. all five,

  556. we're good,

  557. right?

  558. And they

  559. say,

  560. I'll eat

  561. one.

  562. And you're

  563. in a good

  564. mood,

  565. and you

  566. think,

  567. well,

  568. how about

  569. four,

  570. thinking

  571. they'll

  572. meet you

  573. in the

  574. middle,

  575. but no,

  576. no,

  577. no,

  578. they're

  579. hanging

  580. at one.

  581. Yeah?

  582. And eventually

  583. this goes on

  584. for 20

  585. minutes,

  586. and I'll

  587. let you

  588. figure out

  589. how it

  590. ends,

  591. but what's

  592. can we

  593. just agree

  594. what the

  595. lowest

  596. common

  597. denominator

  598. is?

  599. Can we

  600. just agree

  601. what the

  602. bare

  603. minimum

  604. is,

  605. so that

  606. I can

  607. say,

  608. and we

  609. can all

  610. say,

  611. that I've

  612. qualified?

  613. And Jesus

  614. is saying

  615. that's exactly

  616. what the

  617. Pharisees are

  618. doing with

  619. God's law,

  620. right?

  621. And so

  622. much of the

  623. rest of the

  624. Sermon on

  625. the Mount

  626. is Jesus

  627. bringing out

  628. the law's

  629. true meaning,

  630. in contrast

  631. with the

  632. Pharisees'

  633. minimum

  634. standard

  635. interpretation

  636. of it.

  637. I love

  638. Jen Wilkin,

  639. she puts it

  640. like this,

  641. but this

  642. helps.

  643. When it

  644. comes to

  645. obedience,

  646. Jesus is

  647. changing the

  648. question from

  649. how much

  650. can I get

  651. away with

  652. to how

  653. much can I

  654. get away

  655. from?

  656. And you've

  657. got to come

  658. back over the

  659. next number of

  660. weeks as we

  661. just tease

  662. this out as

  663. we walk

  664. with Jesus

  665. through this

  666. sermon,

  667. which might

  668. be the

  669. clue to

  670. explaining the

  671. puzzle at

  672. verse 20.

  673. Were you

  674. thinking this?

  675. Because I was

  676. thinking this

  677. all week.

  678. You there?

  679. Verse 20?

  680. Because in

  681. the face of

  682. it, Jesus

  683. is saying

  684. something like,

  685. unless your

  686. time for the

  687. 100-meter

  688. sprint is

  689. quicker than

  690. you saying

  691. boat,

  692. back in

  693. 28,

  694. or whenever

  695. he was

  696. quick,

  697. you will

  698. not enter

  699. the kingdom

  700. of heaven.

  701. Does it not

  702. read a bit

  703. like that?

  704. And you're

  705. thinking,

  706. what chance

  707. do I have?

  708. If the

  709. Pharisees

  710. can't make

  711. it,

  712. and these

  713. guys on

  714. the outside

  715. are squeaky

  716. clean,

  717. if they

  718. can't make

  719. it,

  720. what chance

  721. do I have?

  722. Here's what's

  723. going on.

  724. I think

  725. according to

  726. Jesus,

  727. and just

  728. remember this,

  729. the Pharisees,

  730. despite all

  731. their,

  732. if I could put

  733. it like this,

  734. all their

  735. religious

  736. virtue

  737. signaling,

  738. they aren't

  739. lovers of

  740. God.

  741. Do you know

  742. what they are

  743. according to

  744. Jesus?

  745. When you

  746. pull away

  747. the thinnest

  748. of veneers,

  749. all they are

  750. is lovers

  751. of self.

  752. God didn't

  753. love their

  754. actions,

  755. God loathed

  756. their actions,

  757. because it

  758. was all

  759. external and

  760. no internal.

  761. And so

  762. what is

  763. Jesus saying

  764. will happen

  765. in the

  766. lives of

  767. his people

  768. through the

  769. power of

  770. the Spirit?

  771. Change.

  772. Internal

  773. leading to

  774. external.

  775. Does that

  776. encourage you

  777. this morning?

  778. In my

  779. ordinary

  780. everyday life,

  781. we'll come

  782. back to this

  783. in a minute,

  784. that Jesus

  785. is changing

  786. me on the

  787. inside,

  788. the Spirit

  789. living inside

  790. of me is

  791. turning this

  792. heart of

  793. stone into

  794. a heart of

  795. flesh that

  796. actually longs

  797. to obey

  798. God and

  799. wants to

  800. obey God.

  801. Why?

  802. Because he's

  803. changed us

  804. internally.

  805. He will

  806. produce in

  807. us the

  808. Spirit through

  809. transformed

  810. hearts and

  811. obedience that

  812. truly pleases

  813. the Lord.

  814. And so

  815. here, as we

  816. begin to bring

  817. the threads of

  818. this together,

  819. just think

  820. back to our

  821. walking billboards.

  822. Ignore

  823. Yorkshire

  824. Brew for a

  825. minute.

  826. Here's the

  827. challenge.

  828. Ready for

  829. this?

  830. Here's the

  831. challenge.

  832. It's not to

  833. underplay the

  834. call to

  835. obedience.

  836. It's striking

  837. to see just

  838. how seriously

  839. Jesus takes

  840. obedience to

  841. his Father.

  842. Now,

  843. theologians will

  844. often talk about

  845. the three

  846. dimensions of

  847. the law.

  848. And I thought

  849. about not doing

  850. this, but I

  851. think we need to

  852. do it.

  853. The three

  854. dimensions of

  855. the law.

  856. So if we're

  857. to understand

  858. as New

  859. Testament

  860. believers,

  861. how do we

  862. relate to

  863. the Old

  864. Testament

  865. law?

  866. I think

  867. this might

  868. be helpful.

  869. So you

  870. have the

  871. three

  872. dimensions

  873. of it.

  874. People

  875. talk about

  876. the

  877. ceremonial

  878. part of

  879. the law,

  880. so the

  881. sacrifices,

  882. the temple,

  883. etc.

  884. All those

  885. things would

  886. find a

  887. fulfillment in

  888. the person

  889. and work of

  890. Jesus.

  891. So we

  892. don't need

  893. to go to

  894. a temple

  895. anymore to

  896. worship.

  897. So the

  898. kind of

  899. ceremonial

  900. part of

  901. it has

  902. been

  903. fulfilled

  904. in

  905. Christ.

  906. We've

  907. also got

  908. the civil

  909. law.

  910. So laws

  911. governing

  912. Israel as

  913. a nation

  914. under God,

  915. so that's

  916. how they

  917. handle

  918. disputes,

  919. things like

  920. that.

  921. And so

  922. we're living

  923. at different

  924. times,

  925. we are not

  926. Israel in

  927. the land,

  928. kind of

  929. being fulfilled

  930. in Christ.

  931. And then

  932. you've got

  933. the moral,

  934. which is

  935. God's heart

  936. and his

  937. expressed

  938. character

  939. through the

  940. law.

  941. people.

  942. And it

  943. reveals his

  944. will for

  945. his people.

  946. We just

  947. think about

  948. the moon.

  949. Why is the

  950. moon bright?

  951. Because the

  952. sun shines

  953. on it and

  954. the moon

  955. displays light

  956. to the world.

  957. It's kind of

  958. like that with

  959. God and his

  960. people.

  961. He calls

  962. us to

  963. reflect his

  964. holiness.

  965. And so

  966. this is the

  967. thing, I

  968. take it,

  969. that God is

  970. writing on the

  971. hearts of his

  972. people.

  973. That longing

  974. to display

  975. his heart

  976. and his

  977. character that

  978. we see

  979. revealed here.

  980. You know,

  981. when it comes

  982. to obedience,

  983. I take it

  984. that is

  985. encouragement

  986. for us.

  987. I wonder

  988. if you've

  989. ever thought

  990. to yourself,

  991. does an

  992. act of

  993. obedience

  994. done in

  995. secret,

  996. does it

  997. even matter?

  998. Does

  999. anybody see

  1000. it?

  1001. That old

  1002. riddle of

  1003. a tree

  1004. falls in

  1005. the forest,

  1006. does it

  1007. make any

  1008. sound?

  1009. It's kind

  1010. of like that,

  1011. isn't it?

  1012. If I do

  1013. something in

  1014. secret,

  1015. if I'm

  1016. obedient in

  1017. secret,

  1018. but does

  1019. anyone see?

  1020. Does anyone

  1021. care?

  1022. And I

  1023. take it

  1024. that this

  1025. and what's

  1026. going to

  1027. come after

  1028. this is

  1029. going to

  1030. show us

  1031. that so

  1032. much of

  1033. this sermon

  1034. is going

  1035. to be

  1036. about

  1037. motivations

  1038. and why

  1039. we do

  1040. what we

  1041. do and

  1042. whose

  1043. praise

  1044. are we

  1045. living

  1046. for.

  1047. And is

  1048. it not

  1049. a wonderful

  1050. thought,

  1051. before we

  1052. get really

  1053. specific,

  1054. that the

  1055. Spirit-inspired

  1056. obedience

  1057. out of

  1058. overflowing

  1059. love for

  1060. Jesus

  1061. is thrilling

  1062. in the

  1063. sight of

  1064. God the

  1065. Father.

  1066. And let's

  1067. be encouraged

  1068. by what

  1069. Jesus says

  1070. we will be

  1071. called when

  1072. we practice

  1073. and teach

  1074. these commands.

  1075. Do you see

  1076. the end of

  1077. verse 19?

  1078. great in

  1079. the kingdom

  1080. of heaven.

  1081. So the

  1082. challenge

  1083. here,

  1084. friends,

  1085. is how

  1086. seriously

  1087. do we

  1088. take

  1089. obedience?

  1090. And let

  1091. that search

  1092. you,

  1093. that question,

  1094. wherever God

  1095. might be

  1096. putting his

  1097. finger on

  1098. in your

  1099. life,

  1100. how seriously

  1101. do we

  1102. take this

  1103. call to

  1104. obedience?

  1105. And here's

  1106. the encouragement,

  1107. and maybe just a

  1108. little bit longer

  1109. here to leave

  1110. us in this

  1111. encouraging

  1112. place.

  1113. It's not

  1114. to underrate

  1115. the power

  1116. of obedience.

  1117. Because if you

  1118. think about it,

  1119. what Jesus

  1120. says here

  1121. is the

  1122. opposite of

  1123. what the

  1124. world tells

  1125. us.

  1126. Think about

  1127. it.

  1128. That faith

  1129. is a private

  1130. thing, keep

  1131. it to

  1132. yourself.

  1133. You can

  1134. believe what

  1135. you want,

  1136. but you can

  1137. believe it

  1138. over the

  1139. hair.

  1140. I'd say

  1141. there's two

  1142. reasons why

  1143. we shouldn't

  1144. be duped

  1145. into thinking

  1146. that.

  1147. First of

  1148. all,

  1149. it's the

  1150. belief that

  1151. everyone has

  1152. a world

  1153. view,

  1154. right?

  1155. That mine

  1156. is,

  1157. it's

  1158. happened to

  1159. be a

  1160. Jesus

  1161. shaped one

  1162. and someone

  1163. else's is

  1164. maybe an

  1165. agnostic

  1166. one or an

  1167. atheist

  1168. driven one,

  1169. but everybody's

  1170. got a view

  1171. on things.

  1172. The question

  1173. really is,

  1174. will it

  1175. hold?

  1176. Why do we

  1177. believe what

  1178. we believe?

  1179. And ultimately,

  1180. where does it

  1181. get us if we

  1182. keep on going?

  1183. So let that

  1184. encourage you

  1185. when you live

  1186. your life as a

  1187. Christian in

  1188. public,

  1189. that you've

  1190. got really good

  1191. things to offer.

  1192. Everybody's

  1193. coming at this

  1194. with a view of

  1195. the world.

  1196. You know,

  1197. I've got a

  1198. friend,

  1199. Colin,

  1200. who is a

  1201. pastor in

  1202. Gilmerton.

  1203. He does this

  1204. thing once a

  1205. month.

  1206. He goes,

  1207. it's called

  1208. Think and

  1209. Drink,

  1210. and he puts

  1211. it out online

  1212. and saying,

  1213. I'm going to

  1214. go to the

  1215. Robins Nest

  1216. pub.

  1217. Now,

  1218. if you know

  1219. that pub

  1220. on the

  1221. south side,

  1222. you'll know

  1223. it's a tasty

  1224. place.

  1225. I'm not talking

  1226. about the

  1227. food,

  1228. right?

  1229. Tasty

  1230. place.

  1231. But here's

  1232. what he

  1233. says,

  1234. this is

  1235. where the

  1236. people in

  1237. this

  1238. community

  1239. go.

  1240. So he

  1241. goes,

  1242. I think

  1243. it's

  1244. every once,

  1245. it's on a

  1246. Thursday night,

  1247. once a month,

  1248. he goes and

  1249. he sits in

  1250. the corner,

  1251. gets a

  1252. drink,

  1253. and he

  1254. just waits

  1255. to see

  1256. who comes.

  1257. And it's

  1258. this kind

  1259. of idea

  1260. that drives

  1261. him to

  1262. do it.

  1263. He says,

  1264. I've had

  1265. some great

  1266. conversations

  1267. with people

  1268. in our

  1269. community,

  1270. but why

  1271. we believe

  1272. what we

  1273. believe.

  1274. So he

  1275. picks one

  1276. subject for

  1277. the evening,

  1278. says,

  1279. if you want

  1280. to come

  1281. and talk

  1282. about it,

  1283. buy a

  1284. pint and

  1285. we'll

  1286. talk

  1287. about it.

  1288. He

  1289. says he

  1290. loves

  1291. it.

  1292. But it's

  1293. this kind

  1294. of thing

  1295. that drives

  1296. him to

  1297. do it.

  1298. So that's

  1299. one reason.

  1300. But the

  1301. second one

  1302. that we

  1303. shouldn't be

  1304. duped into

  1305. thinking is

  1306. because of

  1307. what Jesus

  1308. says here.

  1309. Our world

  1310. says faith

  1311. is a private

  1312. thing,

  1313. keep it to

  1314. yourself.

  1315. Jesus

  1316. says be

  1317. your

  1318. ordinary

  1319. salt and

  1320. light

  1321. selves

  1322. out in

  1323. the open.

  1324. It's the

  1325. opposite to

  1326. what the

  1327. world

  1328. says.

  1329. And I

  1330. think that

  1331. is Jesus'

  1332. slightly

  1333. comical

  1334. logic at

  1335. verse 14.

  1336. Come and

  1337. have a look

  1338. at it.

  1339. I just

  1340. hadn't really

  1341. spent the

  1342. time thinking

  1343. about this

  1344. image here.

  1345. This is how

  1346. my brain

  1347. works.

  1348. Think about

  1349. it like

  1350. this.

  1351. Imagine

  1352. you light

  1353. a birthday

  1354. cake and

  1355. you walk

  1356. into a

  1357. room full

  1358. of people

  1359. with that

  1360. cake and

  1361. you start

  1362. singing

  1363. happy

  1364. birthday

  1365. to you

  1366. and no

  1367. one else

  1368. joins in.

  1369. And you

  1370. think I'm

  1371. in for a

  1372. penny,

  1373. in for a

  1374. pound,

  1375. I'll go

  1376. for it

  1377. again.

  1378. Happy

  1379. birthday

  1380. to you

  1381. and there's

  1382. still puzzled

  1383. faces everywhere

  1384. and you

  1385. stop and

  1386. you say

  1387. what's

  1388. going on?

  1389. Why

  1390. are you

  1391. not

  1392. joining

  1393. in?

  1394. And

  1395. everybody

  1396. says,

  1397. well you've

  1398. got a

  1399. massive

  1400. bowl over

  1401. the top

  1402. of the

  1403. cake and

  1404. we don't

  1405. know what's

  1406. happening.

  1407. And you

  1408. think,

  1409. oh yeah.

  1410. And that's

  1411. the kind of

  1412. logic of

  1413. Jesus.

  1414. Here do you

  1415. see what

  1416. he's saying?

  1417. He's saying

  1418. you wouldn't,

  1419. it doesn't

  1420. make any

  1421. sense to

  1422. do that,

  1423. to hide

  1424. your light.

  1425. you.

  1426. So why

  1427. would you?

  1428. It's the

  1429. very thing

  1430. that works.

  1431. Do you

  1432. see that?

  1433. It's the

  1434. very thing

  1435. that works.

  1436. When you

  1437. are salt

  1438. and light

  1439. in the

  1440. world,

  1441. in public,

  1442. evangelistically,

  1443. it's the

  1444. very thing

  1445. that's going

  1446. to work.

  1447. The way

  1448. that people

  1449. see you

  1450. love each

  1451. other,

  1452. and I

  1453. can't quite

  1454. figure it

  1455. out.

  1456. The way

  1457. that people

  1458. see that

  1459. you've got

  1460. opinions on

  1461. human life

  1462. and on

  1463. end of

  1464. life matters

  1465. and beginning

  1466. of life

  1467. matters,

  1468. and you're

  1469. willing to

  1470. take a stand

  1471. on that

  1472. and talk

  1473. about that.

  1474. When you

  1475. happily embrace

  1476. a Christian

  1477. sexual ethic,

  1478. and the way

  1479. that we see

  1480. that you're

  1481. different in

  1482. the workplace,

  1483. that you seem

  1484. to tell the

  1485. truth,

  1486. you seem

  1487. to just

  1488. work when

  1489. no one

  1490. else is

  1491. watching,

  1492. when everyone

  1493. else,

  1494. the boss

  1495. goes out,

  1496. you go on

  1497. BBC Sport.

  1498. The way

  1499. that people

  1500. look at you

  1501. at work and

  1502. perceive that

  1503. you're a

  1504. really dependable

  1505. employee.

  1506. Can I be

  1507. honest?

  1508. Sometimes,

  1509. and I wonder

  1510. if you're

  1511. like me,

  1512. I'm tempted

  1513. to think

  1514. that those

  1515. are exactly

  1516. the kind

  1517. of things

  1518. that will

  1519. put people

  1520. off.

  1521. But Jesus

  1522. says they're

  1523. exactly the

  1524. kind of

  1525. things that

  1526. will draw

  1527. people in.

  1528. You know,

  1529. we had a few

  1530. school parents

  1531. around for

  1532. dinner last

  1533. month,

  1534. and it

  1535. came to

  1536. that moment

  1537. in the

  1538. meal.

  1539. people,

  1540. they're

  1541. non-believers,

  1542. and I

  1543. thought about

  1544. it,

  1545. and I

  1546. thought,

  1547. well,

  1548. this is

  1549. our house,

  1550. we'll just

  1551. do what

  1552. we normally

  1553. do,

  1554. and I

  1555. said,

  1556. do you

  1557. mind if

  1558. we just

  1559. stop,

  1560. we always

  1561. do this

  1562. as a

  1563. family's

  1564. meal,

  1565. we just

  1566. stop at

  1567. the beginning

  1568. and say

  1569. thank you

  1570. to God,

  1571. is that

  1572. okay?

  1573. And it

  1574. was a bit

  1575. awkward,

  1576. and we all

  1577. had a laugh

  1578. about it

  1579. afterwards,

  1580. but it

  1581. was this

  1582. passage that

  1583. made me

  1584. just go

  1585. for it.

  1586. Don't

  1587. hide your

  1588. light,

  1589. right?

  1590. don't

  1591. hide,

  1592. and is

  1593. that not

  1594. incredibly

  1595. freeing in

  1596. our world

  1597. of silver

  1598. bullets,

  1599. and hot

  1600. takes,

  1601. and the

  1602. next new

  1603. thing,

  1604. where newer

  1605. is better,

  1606. and where

  1607. novelty

  1608. attracts?

  1609. Is it not

  1610. wonderfully

  1611. liberating to

  1612. hear Jesus

  1613. tell his

  1614. disciples that

  1615. when it

  1616. comes to

  1617. evangelism,

  1618. there ain't

  1619. no school

  1620. like the

  1621. old school?

  1622. You see

  1623. it?

  1624. what has

  1625. been working

  1626. well for

  1627. 2,000 odd

  1628. years in

  1629. terms of

  1630. drawing people

  1631. to the

  1632. beauty of

  1633. Jesus.

  1634. It's

  1635. everyday

  1636. believers

  1637. doing

  1638. everyday

  1639. things in

  1640. everyday

  1641. places in

  1642. salt and

  1643. light ways.

  1644. Will I say

  1645. that again?

  1646. It's

  1647. everyday

  1648. believers

  1649. doing

  1650. everyday

  1651. things in

  1652. everyday

  1653. places in

  1654. salt and

  1655. light ways,

  1656. and saying

  1657. there's

  1658. something

  1659. different

  1660. about

  1661. you.

  1662. I can't

  1663. quite work

  1664. it out,

  1665. but there's

  1666. something

  1667. different

  1668. about

  1669. you.

  1670. How are

  1671. we going

  1672. to make

  1673. an impact

  1674. on this

  1675. city,

  1676. on this

  1677. area?

  1678. It's

  1679. by being

  1680. distinct

  1681. disciples who

  1682. love the

  1683. Lord our

  1684. God with

  1685. all our

  1686. mind,

  1687. soul,

  1688. heart,

  1689. and strength,

  1690. and being

  1691. a people who

  1692. love our

  1693. neighbour as

  1694. ourselves.

  1695. That's the

  1696. way that we're

  1697. going to make

  1698. an impact in

  1699. this city,

  1700. in your

  1701. workplace,

  1702. in the

  1703. student

  1704. halls,

  1705. in your

  1706. digs,

  1707. in the

  1708. school

  1709. playground,

  1710. whatever it

  1711. is,

  1712. wherever God's

  1713. got you,

  1714. that is how

  1715. you're going

  1716. to make a

  1717. difference for

  1718. him.

  1719. Jesus says,

  1720. do you see

  1721. it?

  1722. You are the

  1723. light of the

  1724. world,

  1725. you are the

  1726. salt of the

  1727. earth,

  1728. and this is

  1729. the way it's

  1730. always worked.

  1731. And just as we

  1732. close, I was

  1733. reminded of

  1734. this recently,

  1735. I spoke to

  1736. my friend Amy.

  1737. Amy came to

  1738. stay with us a

  1739. month or so ago.

  1740. Amy used to

  1741. be part of

  1742. this church

  1743. family, she

  1744. graduated in

  1745. the summer.

  1746. Loved Amy,

  1747. currently here,

  1748. studied geography,

  1749. if you get her

  1750. in your mind.

  1751. I remember

  1752. speaking to

  1753. Amy, she was

  1754. telling me this

  1755. story about her

  1756. flat and about

  1757. how towards the

  1758. end of her

  1759. tenancy she had

  1760. this conversation

  1761. with a letting

  1762. agent.

  1763. And she said

  1764. to the letting

  1765. agent, I

  1766. might know some

  1767. people who might

  1768. be interested in

  1769. taking on the

  1770. tenancy.

  1771. party.

  1772. And her

  1773. words to me

  1774. were, when I

  1775. told them that

  1776. they were

  1777. Christian students,

  1778. part of the

  1779. CU, I didn't

  1780. even get to

  1781. finish the

  1782. sentence before

  1783. the estate

  1784. agent said,

  1785. we'd love to

  1786. have them.

  1787. Isn't that

  1788. cool?

  1789. Because the

  1790. letting agent

  1791. thought about

  1792. how Amy and

  1793. her flatmates

  1794. had just looked

  1795. after this

  1796. flat for two

  1797. years.

  1798. No world

  1799. parties, no

  1800. strangers sleeping

  1801. over, no

  1802. late payments,

  1803. no hassle on

  1804. the phone,

  1805. all of this

  1806. stuff, cleaning

  1807. it up and

  1808. leaving it in a

  1809. better condition

  1810. than when they

  1811. found it.

  1812. And the fact

  1813. that there might

  1814. be another

  1815. round of these

  1816. kind of students

  1817. was the dream

  1818. ticket.

  1819. But as Amy

  1820. was telling me

  1821. this story, I

  1822. thought to

  1823. myself, what a

  1824. wonderful reputation

  1825. for Christian

  1826. students to have

  1827. in this city.

  1828. Yeah?

  1829. And what a

  1830. wonderful example

  1831. of everyday,

  1832. non-spectacular,

  1833. faithfully

  1834. obedient, salt

  1835. and light

  1836. living for

  1837. Jesus.

  1838. People notice.

  1839. And so

  1840. Jesus says,

  1841. salt and

  1842. light.

  1843. Walking

  1844. adverts for

  1845. the kingdom

  1846. of God.

  1847. So friends,

  1848. why don't we

  1849. pray and

  1850. let's just

  1851. be quiet

  1852. as we

  1853. respond in

  1854. our own

  1855. hearts to

  1856. what we've

  1857. heard from

  1858. God's

  1859. word this

  1860. morning.

  1861. And then

  1862. I'll pray

  1863. and we'll

  1864. finish our

  1865. time in

  1866. response of

  1867. singing together.

  1868. Father.

  1869. And so

  1870. heavenly

  1871. father, we

  1872. thank you so

  1873. much for

  1874. sending your

  1875. son.

  1876. thank you

  1877. and we'll

  1878. thank you

  1879. and we'll

  1880. thank you

  1881. and we'll

  1882. thank you

  1883. and we'll

  1884. thank you

  1885. and we'll

  1886. thank you for

  1887. the encouragement

  1888. that if our

  1889. faith is in

  1890. your son,

  1891. if we're

  1892. trusting him

  1893. for our

  1894. salvation,

  1895. if we're

  1896. looking to

  1897. him as our

  1898. pattern for

  1899. obedience,

  1900. Lord, thank you

  1901. that you

  1902. promise us

  1903. here that we

  1904. are the

  1905. salt of the

  1906. earth, we

  1907. are the light

  1908. of the world.

  1909. And so

  1910. Lord, I

  1911. pray that

  1912. that would

  1913. hugely

  1914. encourage us

  1915. this morning.

  1916. Father, I

  1917. pray as well

  1918. if there's

  1919. areas today

  1920. in our

  1921. individual

  1922. lives,

  1923. Lord, that

  1924. perhaps we

  1925. are out of

  1926. sync with

  1927. your will,

  1928. maybe in the

  1929. way that we're

  1930. living or the

  1931. things that we're

  1932. believing or the

  1933. circles that we're

  1934. dabbling in.

  1935. Lord, I pray

  1936. that you would

  1937. put people

  1938. around us

  1939. that can help

  1940. us bring us

  1941. back on track.

  1942. Thank you for

  1943. the call this

  1944. morning to

  1945. holiness, to

  1946. obedience, to

  1947. that devotion to

  1948. you.

  1949. And so, Father, I

  1950. pray that you'd be

  1951. with us as we

  1952. finish our time

  1953. together this

  1954. morning.

  1955. Thank you for

  1956. your word.

  1957. Thank you that we

  1958. have it in our

  1959. own language.

  1960. We can pick up,

  1961. we can read, we

  1962. can understand, and

  1963. we can respond.

  1964. So, Lord, help us

  1965. this morning, we

  1966. pray.

  1967. Thank you for our

  1968. time together.

  1969. Thank you for your

  1970. word.

  1971. Pray all of these

  1972. things in Jesus'

  1973. precious name.

  1974. Amen.

  1975. Amen.

  1976. Thank you.
