  1. I wonder if you've heard the joke about two men who one day found themselves walking through a graveyard.

  2. ! And the first man away in the distance spots a gravestone, and it's got some engraving on it.

  3. And he turns to his friend and he says, what does it say?

  4. So the second man runs all the way to the gravestone and slowly begins to shout it back to his friend.

  5. Here's what it says.

  6. Here lies a politician and an honest man.

  7. The first man hears him, smirks to himself, laughs and replies, strange that, isn't it?

  8. Why on earth would they bury two people there?

  9. Clearly a good enough joke that I feel I need to explain it.

  10. It's a joke about how you can't be a politician and an honest person.

  11. But the thing is, if you search online, you will find those kind of jokes for, what did I write down?

  12. Lawyers. I'm happy to take that. He's an ex-lawyer.

  13. Car mechanics, social media influencers, estate agents, journals, and on and on it goes.

  14. There are people in life who we find difficult to take them at their word and find difficult to trust their word.

  15. And I just want to add on the fact that for many of us that will be really painful.

  16. It's not a kind of joke that. It will be really, really painful.

  17. And hang on in there for the good news of this passage that Jesus is going to give us.

  18. But we find it in life difficult to trust some people and take them at their words.

  19. A couple examples of that this week in the news, if you've followed it.

  20. It is like a political drama that you see on Netflix playing out down in Westminster right now, isn't it?

  21. I have lost count of who's in, who's out, who's standing for running against Keir Starmer, who's kind of supporting him.

  22. Kind of lost track of the whole thing.

  23. It's interesting, isn't it? People in circles saying things.

  24. People distrusting, trusting people's words.

  25. Playing out down south, isn't it, at the minute.

  26. It's also playing out if you're into football.

  27. I know it's a raw day to mention football.

  28. But the Premier League playoffs, if you've noticed it down south, they're heading towards their final.

  29. The semi-finals clouded in controversy.

  30. To get to the final, they call it the £100 million game to get promotion to the Premier League.

  31. Again, there was massive controversy this week because Southampton were accused of spying on their opponent, Middlesbrough.

  32. A total breach of the fair play rules that they signed up to at the beginning of the season.

  33. And I loved it.

  34. And a bit of football banter, the Middlesbrough fans all turned up at the game with binoculars.

  35. It was quite funny.

  36. But we live in a world, don't we, where we used to talk about my word is my bond.

  37. We used to talk about gentlemen's agreements.

  38. But nowadays, no one really talks like that.

  39. But friends in the U.S., the phrase that they always use is, now we live in a lawyer-up culture.

  40. But that's the world out there.

  41. But this passage today is going to ask us to take a much closer look at home.

  42. And ask us whether people today would describe us as people of our word.

  43. Are we trustworthy?

  44. It's been well documented, hasn't it, that people today, what do they value?

  45. They value keeping their options open until the last minute in case a better offer presents itself.

  46. Can I give you a little example of this?

  47. I was reading the latest book from Ramesh Ranganathan, you know, the Radio 2 DJ.

  48. He's one of my favorite comedians.

  49. And I've always kind of tracked his career because we're kind of, he's a few years older than me, but we're at the kind of same stage of life.

  50. And I was reading over the Easter holidays his newest and very relatably funny book, which is all about his midlife crisis.

  51. And about how he's noticed these growing behavioral patterns in his life that he now perceives.

  52. And here's what he wrote about plans.

  53. And I know the font is small, but I thought I'd give you the whole quote because I thought it was really funny.

  54. See if his honest humor, call it like it is, connects with you.

  55. He says this,

  56. I became convinced for a while that I had a condition that has been dubbed cancellation ecstasy.

  57. I love cancelling.

  58. It's glorious.

  59. You've arranged to go out for dinner or a night at the pub.

  60. And as the time approaches, you start to dread getting ready and leaving the house.

  61. You start thinking it feels more hassle than it's worth.

  62. And then you start to resent the fact that you're having to go out at all.

  63. A few hours before the event, you convince yourself that the right thing to do for your mental health is to not go out at all.

  64. And you cancel.

  65. Actually feeling noble because you are taking steps to protect yourself.

  66. Now, how relatable is that?

  67. I love what he called that particular chapter, just really simply flake.

  68. But see, when you bring all that together, we are living what I read somebody described recently in the aftermath of the elections last week.

  69. We are living today in a low trust culture.

  70. And so Jesus' words in the Sermon on the Mount to his disciples about the shape of life in the kingdom of God,

  71. who he's calling us to be as his saved people, saved by grace.

  72. These are so timely.

  73. And they will make them, if we take them to heart, they will make us so distinct.

  74. Really simply because he's encouraging his people to be people of their word.

  75. And it comes in the context of Jesus' teaching about oaths.

  76. It's not language that we use much these days, but hopefully you can kind of connect with that word.

  77. And a bit like last week, before we read it together, here's the question.

  78. Why does Jesus care so much?

  79. So let's read it together while we, the words will go on the screen, but you follow along in your own Bible if you can.

  80. This is Matthew 5, 33 to 37.

  81. We'll pick it up at verse 33.

  82. Jesus speaking to the crowd, to his disciples.

  83. Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago.

  84. Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.

  85. Verse 34.

  86. But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all.

  87. Either by heaven, for it's God's throne.

  88. Or by the earth, for it is his footstool.

  89. Or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king.

  90. And do not swear by your heads, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.

  91. All you need to say is simply yes or no.

  92. Anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

  93. And God will bless the reading of his word to us this morning.

  94. So we pick up at verse 33.

  95. Do you see it?

  96. You have heard it said.

  97. Now that's a phrase that Jesus has been using throughout this sermon.

  98. And it's indicating to us once again that he's challenging the teachers of the law and the Pharisees.

  99. Now what were they teaching?

  100. We'll see it there at verse 33.

  101. Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.

  102. Now, strictly speaking, that is not a precise quotation of any one particular law of Moses.

  103. So you won't find that exact phrase in the Old Testament.

  104. But what it is, is an accurate summary of several Old Testament commands.

  105. Ones where God's people were encouraged to make promises to God and follow through on and fulfill those promises.

  106. Really simply make a promise to God and keep it.

  107. Simple as that.

  108. Give me a couple examples on the screen.

  109. Here's one from Numbers 30.

  110. When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word, but must do everything he said.

  111. Do you see it?

  112. Or here's another one.

  113. You can scribble these down if you want.

  114. Deuteronomy 23.

  115. If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it.

  116. For the Lord your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin.

  117. So the concept at verse 33, their quotation, is certainly an accurate one.

  118. But the Pharisees and teachers of the law, as they teach the people, and remember in their day, their role, they're doing more than teaching the people.

  119. They're also called to set the pace when it comes to holiness, godliness.

  120. Just like they've done with divorce.

  121. Remember this last week.

  122. They're doing the same here.

  123. They're demonstrating the fact that they're sticklers for the letter of the law, but totally missing the heart of the law.

  124. Now we thought last week, if you get back into what's going on in this sermon, remember we've thought about this every single week.

  125. The mistake is to think that this is a moral lecture from Jesus.

  126. It's not that at all.

  127. It is about what life inside his kingdom looks like.

  128. And we thought last week that the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, if you remember this, they're presenting to the people a botched version of the original.

  129. And Jesus has come to restore it to its beauty and its original intention and to display that to his disciples, not just in his teaching, but in his life.

  130. And somebody insightfully asked our growth group this week, as we consider that the Pharisees and the teachers of the law.

  131. Somebody asked, why are they getting it so wrong?

  132. That's a good question, isn't it?

  133. Why are they getting it so wrong?

  134. And I think the answer, if you remember back to the first week, first couple of weeks we spent in the sermon on the night, the answer is that they are trying to make it easier to obey.

  135. They are trying to drop the bar so low that anybody can feel like they've got over it.

  136. Because who doesn't want to feel like we're all in God's good books?

  137. So when it comes to righteousness, what they're trying to do is achieve it on the cheap.

  138. When it comes to righteousness, they're trying to achieve it on the cheap.

  139. And so when it comes to oaths, in an attempt to make it easier to obey, got to notice what's going on here, what they're doing.

  140. They are just shifting the emphasis.

  141. Hold with me, track with me.

  142. Take that phrase, fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.

  143. Now the emphasis is mine just for the purposes of this.

  144. Take that phrase, fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.

  145. Now it doesn't require too much thinking to realize that the emphasis in that sentence, where is the really important thing?

  146. It's on the Lord, isn't it?

  147. It's on the Lord.

  148. This is about who the Lord is.

  149. This is about who he is.

  150. This is about what he has done.

  151. This is about what he has said.

  152. And it's in light of his character that we'll come back to in about 10 minutes time.

  153. It's in light of his character that we want to obey.

  154. So the stress is on the Lord.

  155. However, in their day, what they've done is they've just switched the emphasis.

  156. They've shifted the emphasis to the vow.

  157. And they've come up with this elaborate scale by which people can assess the seriousness of the vow that they have made.

  158. And maybe to get your head around what I'm talking about, this is a bit like, if you remember back to the playground at school.

  159. Do you remember this?

  160. Unless your friend would promise to do something and you would take them at their word.

  161. Or maybe you were that person, I don't know.

  162. Friend would promise something, you would take them at their word.

  163. You would act on what they said.

  164. You would come back to them and say, why didn't you do what you said?

  165. And they would say, oh, sorry, I made that promise all the time having my fingers behind my back.

  166. So technically, it doesn't count.

  167. And that's kind of what they're doing when it comes to the vows that they are making.

  168. And see, later on in Matthew's gospel, you kind of get a worked example of this.

  169. This is chapter 23.

    Isaiah 23 chapter mention

  170. Jesus speaking.

  171. I'll go on the screen.

  172. He says, woe to you blind guides.

  173. And that's strong language, isn't it?

  174. You say, if anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing.

  175. But if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, it's bound by the oath.

  176. You blind fools.

  177. Which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold sacred?

  178. You also say, if anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing.

  179. But anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.

  180. You blind men.

  181. Which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?

  182. So can I give you the Shanks-inspired paraphrase of what's going on here, right?

  183. They've created this bizarre distinction where somebody makes a promise saying, I swear by the temple, right?

  184. I swear by the temple.

  185. And when they don't follow through on that, they would say, ah, well, technically, technically, I only swore by the altar.

  186. And so it doesn't count.

  187. And so they've developed this whole system whereby your promises only count if you make them in a certain way and you make them according to a certain formula.

  188. And the three examples, I think, in the text, I think that's what Jesus is saying to them.

  189. Do you see them there?

  190. Heaven, earth, and Jerusalem.

  191. You can imagine that.

  192. I swear by heaven.

  193. I swear by earth.

  194. I call upon Jerusalem as my witness.

  195. You kind of get that, right?

  196. And Jesus comes along and looks at this whole charade and says, what utter nonsense.

  197. And two reasons it's nonsense.

  198. The first one is implied in the text.

  199. And it's what the very existence of the oath tells you.

  200. Now, last week, if you remember last week, if you were here, we thought about the fact that the certificate of divorce with that,

  201. Jesus was implying that it only exists because of the hardness of your heart.

  202. This week, Jesus, I think, is implying with the oath.

  203. Do you know what?

  204. It only exists in the first place because of your untruthfulness.

  205. I mean, if you're having to convince someone to trust you by appealing to an oath,

  206. essentially saying to them, I really, really, really, really mean it this time,

  207. then that doesn't reflect well on your character, does it?

  208. You're having to convince somebody, beg somebody to trust you.

  209. I mean, what kind of person has to twist someone's arm to get them to trust them?

  210. Answer, an untrustworthy one.

  211. So it's implied in the text.

  212. Why do oaths exist in the first place?

  213. Think about it.

  214. But I think the second reason is, again, implied in the text.

  215. And it's this.

  216. Because commentators generally agree with this,

  217. that what had happened here is that they had developed this system,

  218. that if you use the Lord's name, then your vow is really serious.

  219. But if you didn't use the Lord's name, it's not as serious.

  220. And Jesus is saying, do you see the futility of thinking

  221. that you can somehow keep God out of this by not using his name?

  222. Do you see how that is utterly absurd?

  223. This is how I've been thinking about it this week.

  224. It's a bit like that constant theme in Lord of the Rings

  225. when Frodo, any time he puts on the ring,

  226. the all-seeing eye of Sauron kind of sees him and looks at him,

  227. and all of a sudden he's got him.

  228. And if he takes off the ring, he's invisible again.

  229. It's that kind of thing that they're trying to do with the vows.

  230. We mention the Lord's name, all of a sudden he sees.

  231. But see, if we don't mention the Lord's name, he doesn't see.

  232. That's the mindset.

  233. Thinking if we just keep him out of it,

  234. if we just keep him out of it

  235. and try and get around the back door with our oaths,

  236. then we're doing okay.

  237. Because we still kept our oath,

  238. because technically we swore over something else.

  239. So technically we're okay.

  240. Do you remember we said this last week,

  241. they are looking for loopholes?

  242. And just as an aside,

  243. that was the precise logic of the famous atheist philosopher A.C. Grayling.

  244. He talked about how society's reliance

  245. on thousands of CCTV cameras in public places

  246. was proof of the fact that people today

  247. don't believe that a divine being is watching them.

  248. So I've always found it interesting

  249. why he thought that that proved the unreliability of God.

  250. When I think actually all it does

  251. is just show the unreliability of the human heart.

  252. But you can make your minds up on that one if you want.

  253. But Jesus is reminding his disciples here really simply

  254. that God sees it all.

  255. And it's a great time to remind ourselves,

  256. every time we come up against this stuff,

  257. remind ourselves who the Lord is.

  258. I'll give you two words.

  259. The Lord is the omnipresent one.

  260. So that word omni just means all present everywhere.

  261. He is the all everywhere one.

  262. And he is the omniscient one, right?

  263. Omni, again, all science, knowledge.

  264. That's where we get science from if you're into that.

  265. Omni, he is the all-knowing one.

  266. So he's the all-seeing one.

  267. He is the all-knowing one.

  268. He is the holy one.

  269. He is the one who's so far above the things of this earth.

  270. And they have reduced him to,

  271. he only sees when we kind of bring him into the equation.

  272. And Jesus says, how wrong, how twisted.

  273. How twisted.

  274. How foolish.

  275. And I think what Jesus is getting at here

  276. is what the Puritans used to talk about

  277. using that Latin phrase, coram deo,

  278. meaning always in the presence of God.

  279. Always in the presence of God.

  280. All of life, always in the presence of God.

  281. And that's what Jesus is encouraging in his disciples,

  282. I think here.

  283. Now, remember that shift in emphasis?

  284. The Pharisees seeking to make it easier to obey,

  285. dropping the bar.

  286. They're seeking to put the emphasis not on the Lord.

  287. They're seeking to place it on the vow.

  288. I think really simply, if you want to understand this,

  289. Jesus here is just seeking to shift the emphasis back.

  290. And so here's his simple conclusion and plea to his disciples,

  291. verse 37.

  292. All you need to say, remember,

  293. in light of everything he's just said,

  294. in light of who the Lord is,

  295. all you need to say is simply yes or no.

  296. Anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

  297. Now, what is he seeking to create in the hearts of his people?

  298. I take it really simply, truthful speech.

  299. People whose words can be trusted.

  300. Now, listen, you might hear that and think to yourself,

  301. well, listen, I never come out with lines like,

  302. I swear on my auntie's dog's grave, right?

  303. Or as God is my witness.

  304. I never come out with lines like this in my life.

  305. But Jesus won't let us off the hook so easily.

  306. He loves us too much for that.

  307. Because so often we do this in subtle ways.

  308. Can I ask you four questions that as this passage has had me

  309. in a headlock this week and wrestled with me,

  310. that I've freshly realized that I am so guilty of

  311. and sometimes I don't even notice it?

  312. And try these on for signs and they all begin with over.

  313. See if they connect.

  314. Friends, are you guilty, first of all, of maybe over-promising?

  315. Right?

  316. Saying that you'll make sure that something definitely happens

  317. and then being casual on making good on those words.

  318. Some of my biggest regrets in life

  319. and some of my biggest pains I've received in life

  320. are all to do with that.

  321. Hurt people by the things that I promised would happen

  322. and never happened.

  323. Or was led up the garden path to think that something was going to happen

  324. and it never happened.

  325. Really hurtful.

  326. But Jesus is saying,

  327. are you prone to over-promising?

  328. Secondly, are you prone to over-committing?

  329. Saying you'll take something on,

  330. saying that you'll be at something

  331. and then realizing that you've written a check

  332. that you can't cash?

  333. Just, oof, find this really hard.

  334. Third, these are really quick.

  335. Are you prone to over-egging?

  336. Exaggerating stories for effect?

  337. Using superlatives?

  338. Replaying conversations in your mind

  339. where you're always the one who comes off 100% in the right?

  340. Maybe fourth, are you prone to over-speaking?

  341. Pretending you have answers

  342. when really you have no answers?

  343. You know, our phones,

  344. I think this happens all the time in my life.

  345. My phone tricks me into thinking

  346. that I'm the one who's omniscient.

  347. All-knowing.

  348. So all I need to do is just go on Google

  349. and I can find out answers to things.

  350. And all of a sudden,

  351. I can be an expert

  352. in any kind of things.

  353. Horticulture, politics, anything.

  354. I can be an expert

  355. and give me five minutes

  356. and I can rustle up a conversation.

  357. That combined with social media

  358. and feeling the pressure

  359. to be an expert in everything,

  360. to give your hot take,

  361. to give your opinion

  362. and the speed of the news

  363. that comes at us these days

  364. in our 24-7 news channels

  365. that says you need to be informed

  366. on everything.

  367. You know, friends,

  368. can I tell you the lecturers at uni

  369. that made the biggest impact on me

  370. were the ones who I could tell

  371. were the cleverest people in the room.

  372. I mean, their knowledge.

  373. I cannot begin to even fathom

  374. the things that they know, right?

  375. But here's the thing.

  376. When they were quizzed on something,

  377. when we used to have a Q&A

  378. at the end of class,

  379. it's 10 minutes Q&A,

  380. anyone got any questions?

  381. And they got asked a question

  382. that they didn't know.

  383. So instead of waffling an answer,

  384. they would just humbly say,

  385. do you know what?

  386. I don't know,

  387. but great question.

  388. I want to find out.

  389. I think we feel the pressure,

  390. don't we, sometimes,

  391. of having to know everything.

  392. But friends,

  393. see when you bring

  394. those four things together,

  395. over-promising,

  396. over-committing,

  397. over-egging,

  398. over-speaking,

  399. I think here's what

  400. we need to see.

  401. Is that a great question

  402. to be asking

  403. with these four things?

  404. And there's lots more

  405. we could have said, right?

  406. But a great question

  407. to be asking

  408. is always,

  409. why do I do it?

  410. Why do I do it?

  411. Whoa, whoa, whoa.

  412. What is the heart motivation

  413. in these things?

  414. Have you ever thought

  415. last week about

  416. so often the devil

  417. tempts us to think

  418. that red flags

  419. are actually bunting?

  420. And friends,

  421. can I suggest

  422. that these things

  423. might just be warning lights

  424. that are going on

  425. in our hearts?

  426. Can I give you

  427. my honest answer

  428. why I so often do it?

  429. I so often do it

  430. because I think

  431. I want people

  432. to think better of me

  433. than I actually am.

  434. And our words

  435. really are

  436. windows into our hearts.

  437. A great question

  438. to ask yourself

  439. with these things

  440. is what's going on

  441. in my heart.

  442. Again,

  443. as my American friends

  444. used to say,

  445. you've got to learn

  446. in life to pop the hood.

  447. What's going on

  448. in the heart?

  449. And so why are we

  450. to be truthful people,

  451. right?

  452. How are we going to change?

  453. Because I take it

  454. none of us are sitting here

  455. thinking,

  456. do you know what?

  457. I love lying.

  458. But it comes so naturally

  459. to us.

  460. I think this is why

  461. Jesus is speaking

  462. into this area.

  463. It's like we're born

  464. with the seeds

  465. of deceptiveness

  466. in our hearts,

  467. isn't it?

  468. It's what happens

  469. in Genesis 3.

  470. And Jesus has come

  471. to woo us back

  472. to life in the light.

  473. How are we going

  474. to change?

  475. Well, I take it

  476. it's a bit like

  477. what environmentalists

  478. will tell you

  479. about water pollution.

  480. It is in a way

  481. pretty futile

  482. to spend your time

  483. cleaning up

  484. the actual river.

  485. In actual fact,

  486. what you need to do

  487. is go way back

  488. to the source.

  489. And I'm convinced

  490. this is what Jesus

  491. is doing in this sermon.

  492. We often get

  493. focused on the river.

  494. But he's saying

  495. he wants,

  496. if we're going to change

  497. and he longs to change us,

  498. he will take us

  499. right back to the source.

  500. What's the problem

  501. with murder?

  502. It's the evil thoughts,

  503. angry thoughts

  504. in your heart.

  505. What's the problem

  506. with adultery?

  507. It's the lust

  508. that exists in your heart.

  509. So don't,

  510. this is bad,

  511. but this isn't

  512. where the problem is.

  513. The problem is here.

  514. And sometimes we need

  515. to go way further upstream.

  516. And I think this is

  517. what Jesus is doing here.

  518. And here's somebody

  519. who puts it way better

  520. than I will.

  521. This is a man

  522. called David Gibson

  523. up in Aberdeen

  524. in his book

  525. called Radically Whole.

  526. And can I just recommend

  527. that you get it?

  528. It's on the book of James,

  529. but it is

  530. so applicable here.

  531. Try this quote on for size.

  532. Never try to fix your words

  533. by mending your mouth.

  534. Instead,

  535. the heart needs to change.

  536. Since the tongue

  537. is the hinge

  538. on which the door

  539. of the heart turns,

  540. we need to open

  541. our hearts to God,

  542. first of all.

  543. And then,

  544. when we open

  545. our mouths,

  546. things will be

  547. different.

  548. And the answer,

  549. I think here,

  550. that Jesus is

  551. wooing us towards

  552. is knowing

  553. who the Lord is.

  554. That's what's upstream.

  555. Not our words,

  556. not our truthfulness.

  557. We don't start there.

  558. We start by getting back

  559. and knowing the Lord

  560. who loves us

  561. and has saved us.

  562. Remembering his character.

  563. Remembering the Lord,

  564. the one who is faithful.

  565. Remembering that the Lord

  566. is one who never

  567. changes his mind.

  568. There is no shadow

  569. due to change

  570. with him.

  571. Remembering that the Lord

  572. is the one who always

  573. delivers

  574. on his words.

  575. He is the one

  576. who speaks

  577. truth.

  578. He is the one

  579. who is outside

  580. of time.

  581. And on and on

  582. and on we could go.

  583. It's by remembering

  584. who the Lord

  585. is.

  586. Friends,

  587. when I use my words

  588. to improve

  589. what others

  590. think of me,

  591. it shows

  592. that I've forgotten

  593. that the most

  594. important

  595. and defining

  596. thing about me

  597. is what God

  598. says is true

  599. of me

  600. in the gospel.

  601. When I live

  602. for the praise

  603. of others

  604. instead of his praise,

  605. that's exactly

  606. what it shows

  607. me in you.

  608. And remembering

  609. the Lord,

  610. remembering what

  611. is true of us

  612. of the gospel.

  613. What is true?

  614. And so often

  615. what this gathering

  616. is,

  617. we gather every week

  618. as one body

  619. is all about

  620. remembering

  621. what the Lord

  622. has said

  623. is true.

  624. What is true

  625. of us in Christ,

  626. of our,

  627. and you might be

  628. here feeling like

  629. it is a mustard

  630. seed faith I have

  631. in Christ.

  632. Seems to me

  633. that the tenderest

  634. words of Jesus

  635. for people

  636. are those in the

  637. gospels for whom

  638. that is true.

  639. If I can just

  640. touch the hem

  641. of his garment.

  642. Lord,

  643. I believe,

  644. help my unbelief.

  645. It is those people.

  646. But what is true

  647. of us

  648. that God declares

  649. over us

  650. in Christ

  651. because of our

  652. faith in him?

  653. The Christ who

  654. went to the cross,

  655. the Christ who

  656. came and lived,

  657. the Christ who

  658. is risen,

  659. and as we sang

  660. at the start,

  661. who has our names

  662. graven in his hand.

  663. What is true

  664. of us?

  665. We are a new

  666. creation.

  667. The old is gone,

  668. the new has come.

  669. We are forgiven,

  670. we are chosen,

  671. we are loved,

  672. we are adopted,

  673. we are sealed

  674. with his spirit,

  675. and we have a

  676. glorious future

  677. ahead.

  678. That's what's

  679. true of us,

  680. and the call

  681. here is to

  682. take that truth

  683. about who the

  684. Lord is

  685. and have that

  686. impact and change

  687. our words.

  688. And we're going

  689. to think more

  690. about this

  691. next week.

  692. that the Lord

  693. is transforming

  694. his people

  695. into those

  696. who increasingly

  697. reflect something

  698. of his character

  699. to the watching

  700. world.

  701. And in this

  702. case,

  703. what is that

  704. truth?

  705. It is his

  706. truthfulness and

  707. faithfulness.

  708. Do you see how

  709. that changes

  710. any little

  711. lies,

  712. little exaggerations

  713. we are tempted

  714. to tell,

  715. ways that we're

  716. tempted to promise

  717. things,

  718. and all

  719. these things,

  720. we can glorify

  721. God in those

  722. smallest of

  723. moments.

  724. The call here

  725. is to make

  726. your words

  727. matter.

  728. And we can

  729. build our

  730. lives there

  731. on who the

  732. Lord is.

  733. You know,

  734. just as we

  735. close,

  736. I've got my

  737. grand's funeral

  738. on Wednesday

  739. next week.

  740. You can pray

  741. for us with

  742. that funeral.

  743. She was 95

  744. when she

  745. died.

  746. Suffered

  747. from vascular

  748. dementia the

  749. last season

  750. of her life.

  751. got a

  752. funeral

  753. Wednesday.

  754. And my

  755. dad this

  756. week,

  757. or the

  758. tail end

  759. of last

  760. week,

  761. was cleaning

  762. out her

  763. flat,

  764. thinking what

  765. on earth

  766. are we going

  767. to do for

  768. the funeral?

  769. And as it

  770. turns out,

  771. a lot of

  772. people like

  773. her in that

  774. generation,

  775. she'd written

  776. the funeral

  777. plan before

  778. she died,

  779. but she

  780. didn't just

  781. write it a

  782. week or

  783. even a month

  784. before she

  785. died.

  786. She wrote

  787. this thing

  788. 12 years

  789. before she

  790. died.

  791. And she

  792. was still

  793. fit as a

  794. fiddle.

  795. And he

  796. sent us

  797. a screenshot

  798. of it,

  799. and she's

  800. written this,

  801. she was like,

  802. I would love

  803. to use this

  804. funeral director.

  805. The funeral

  806. director is not

  807. going anymore,

  808. right?

  809. I would love

  810. to use this

  811. minister,

  812. my minister.

  813. I had to

  814. drag the

  815. guy who

  816. retired

  817. late 80s

  818. to come

  819. and do

  820. the funeral.

  821. It's fine,

  822. so we're

  823. having a

  824. joke about

  825. the things

  826. in this

  827. that have

  828. totally

  829. changed.

  830. But then

  831. we start

  832. reading,

  833. I want

  834. these

  835. readings,

  836. things,

  837. and I

  838. want these

  839. hymns,

  840. and these

  841. to be

  842. themes that

  843. come out

  844. of my

  845. funeral,

  846. and all

  847. of a sudden

  848. you're laughing

  849. at the

  850. things that

  851. change,

  852. but the

  853. whole thing

  854. is built

  855. upon the

  856. things that

  857. don't

  858. change.

  859. The whole

  860. thing,

  861. our whole

  862. life is

  863. built on

  864. the fact

  865. that the

  866. Lord is

  867. truthful,

  868. he's

  869. faithful,

  870. and we

  871. can stake

  872. everything.

  873. It doesn't

  874. matter how

  875. long in

  876. advance you

  877. want to

  878. plan the

  879. end,

  880. the Lord

  881. is saying

  882. the end

  883. is written,

  884. it's done,

  885. it's sealed,

  886. and you

  887. can live

  888. your life

  889. backwards.

  890. So it

  891. doesn't

  892. matter how

  893. much of a

  894. running you

  895. have to

  896. the end,

  897. how many

  898. days,

  899. hours,

  900. weeks,

  901. months we

  902. have left

  903. on this

  904. planet,

  905. by God's

  906. grace,

  907. you can

  908. stake it

  909. all in

  910. the fact

  911. that I

  912. am truthful

  913. and not

  914. going to

  915. change.

  916. So do

  917. you see

  918. how that,

  919. knowing that,

  920. knowing who

  921. the Lord

  922. is,

  923. it impacts

  924. friends.

  925. Our

  926. words.

  927. It impacts

  928. our words.

  929. Here's the

  930. words of

  931. Isaac Watts,

  932. and I love

  933. this quote,

  934. and we'll

  935. end with

  936. this.

  937. I believe

  938. the promises

  939. of God

  940. enough to

  941. venture an

  942. eternity on

  943. them.

  944. Let me

  945. pray.

  946. And so

  947. Father,

  948. we pray

  949. today for

  950. just a

  951. greater view

  952. of you.

  953. thank you

  954. that you

  955. have not

  956. left

  957. yourself

  958. without

  959. witness.

  960. Thank you

  961. that we

  962. can look

  963. around,

  964. we can

  965. see,

  966. and we'll

  967. think a

  968. bit more

  969. about this

  970. next week,

  971. we can

  972. see your

  973. goodness

  974. in

  975. creation,

  976. we can

  977. see your

  978. power in

  979. creation,

  980. we can

  981. turn,

  982. though,

  983. to the

  984. pages of

  985. the Bible,

  986. we can

  987. see your

  988. plan,

  989. your

  990. purposes,

  991. your

  992. track

  993. record,

  994. and we

  995. can look

  996. at Christ

  997. and see

  998. perfectly

  999. who you

  1000. are.

  1001. Father,

  1002. thank you

  1003. that you

  1004. have not

  1005. left

  1006. yourself

  1007. without

  1008. witness.

  1009. And we

  1010. pray,

  1011. Lord,

  1012. that we

  1013. would leave

  1014. here today

  1015. having

  1016. increased in

  1017. our knowledge

  1018. of who

  1019. you are,

  1020. and may

  1021. you in

  1022. turn,

  1023. continually,

  1024. day by

  1025. day,

  1026. moment by

  1027. moment,

  1028. and word

  1029. by word,

  1030. turn us

  1031. into a

  1032. people who

  1033. increasingly

  1034. display your

  1035. truthfulness to

  1036. a watching

  1037. world.

  1038. Father,

  1039. we thank

  1040. you for

  1041. your love

  1042. for us

  1043. this morning,

  1044. and I

  1045. pray,

  1046. Lord,

  1047. for all

  1048. of us,

  1049. wherever

  1050. this has

  1051. landed,

  1052. that they

  1053. would be

  1054. both conviction,

  1055. and comfort.

  1056. Lord,

  1057. we leave

  1058. here with

  1059. an increased

  1060. desire to

  1061. live for

  1062. you,

  1063. and we

  1064. pray all

  1065. of these

  1066. things in

  1067. Christ's

  1068. precious name.

  1069. Amen.

  1070. Amen.

  1071. Amen.

  1072. Amen.
