  1. Okay, well, morning folks. Lovely to see you. Please do have your Bibles open. I know that's only three verses today, but boy, this is going to pack a punch.

  2. So please have your Bibles open. Remember that this is not just routine. This is not just something we do on a Sunday morning. This is about encountering the living God who has made himself known in his word.

  3. So please have that open in front of you as we get into this topic today, these verses today. To try and get us into this, can I tell you about my favourite dad joke?

  4. Had it a few weeks ago, summer holiday, in the car, up and down, down to Bath, back up to Edinburgh. Inevitably, the call comes from the back. Do you know the one of you who are a parent?

  5. And I'm hungry. At which point, I know it's coming and I love to reply, hi, hungry. I'm dad. Which never goes down quite well.

  6. But here's the thing you recognise, you realise along car journeys. One of the worst things imaginable for a child, where they cannot get their head around, is the thought of being hungry.

  7. Can I suggest though, if you're like me, adults aren't much better. Yeah, watching the World Cup just a few weeks ago, it felt like every second advert was for McDonald's or Uber Eats or Domino's Pizza.

  8. Our meals, they come microwavable ready. We talk about people, maybe you're one of these people, people who are foodies.

  9. At work, I remember this in the office. We always look forward to our elevenses.

  10. We've even invented a term that describes somebody who's both tired and hungry.

  11. What do we call them? Hangry.

  12. We don't do well as adults, do we, with the thought of being hungry.

  13. Which is why what Jesus is going to say today in these verses, it might seem really odd.

  14. Because in these verses, if you've got it there, come with me, you get the distinct impression that this whole idea of denying yourself food for spiritual purposes,

  15. which is what fasting is at a functional level.

  16. As you see Jesus here talking, he's saying, do you see it when you fast, not if you fast.

  17. He's talking about fasting like it's a really good thing.

  18. Problem is, it can be done for all the wrong reasons.

  19. Which I don't know about you, but that doubly intrigues me.

  20. And we're going to spend the rest of our time getting our teeth into why.

  21. And before we get there, and because some of us will hear this, and this concept is totally alien to us.

  22. Others of us will hear this, and we're suspicious.

  23. Others of us will hear this, and we'll maybe think our minds will go to some of the similar sounding alternatives,

  24. which are out there on the market.

  25. It's worth us clarifying what Jesus isn't talking about here.

  26. So on the one hand, in our increasingly health conscious culture,

  27. we need to appreciate that this is not Jesus promoting some kind of bodily detox.

  28. Right?

  29. It's our world that we live in today.

  30. It's true, isn't it, that we're growing more conscious of what we're putting into our bodies.

  31. Didn't surprise me this read to week that, get this,

  32. 8 million more pints of non-alcoholic beer were poured in the UK this year than at this point last year.

  33. But that's not what Jesus has in mind here.

  34. And on the other hand, in our increasingly multicultural culture,

  35. we need to appreciate that this is different from what our Muslim friends would do at Ramadan,

  36. and our Catholic friends would do when they fast,

  37. which, as I understand it, has as part of that practice,

  38. this idea of trying to make amends for our wrongs.

  39. Again, this is not what Jesus has in mind here.

  40. And so, in the time that we have together,

  41. as we try and enter the atmosphere of these verses in Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  42. I want to kind of frame this in terms of four distinct reasons why God's people fast,

  43. as we get into this.

  44. You with me?

  45. Here's number one.

  46. First reason.

  47. This is all about feeling our need.

  48. If you're a note taker, four things.

  49. Here's the first one.

  50. Feeling our need.

  51. So, fasting, depriving yourself of food for the sake of spiritual purposes,

  52. which we'll come on to see right at the top of that,

  53. what's Jesus talking about?

  54. He's talking about seeking the face of the Father, right?

  55. Number one reason we do this,

  56. it acutely reminds us of the creature-creator distinction.

  57. And here's the thing.

  58. It does not matter whether you're at the beginning of life,

  59. or you're at the middle of life,

  60. or that you're at the end of your life.

  61. We are still wholly dependent beings.

  62. We never stop being wholly dependent beings.

  63. I think our problem,

  64. this is where the slide background has come from,

  65. our problem is that we run around every day

  66. acting as if it's not true.

  67. But on the other side to this than us,

  68. we've got to understand that while we are needy and dependent,

  69. our God is wholly other.

  70. He is wholly other.

  71. He is dependent on no one.

  72. He is entirely self-sufficient.

  73. Our God has no equal.

  74. Him and the devil.

  75. It's not like God has his nemesis.

  76. Right?

  77. This is not Messi versus Ronaldo.

  78. This is not Luke versus Darth.

  79. God and this is not two equals playing it out.

  80. Our God is entirely other.

  81. He has no equal.

  82. He has no rival.

  83. He is, to quote that TV show if you watch it,

  84. he is in a league of his own.

  85. And he is the provider.

  86. He's the sustainer of all things.

  87. See that breath you just took?

  88. He gave you it.

  89. And that's baked into what we saw last week

  90. as Jesus taught his disciples how to pray.

  91. Did you pick that up?

  92. Give us each day our daily bread.

  93. Here's the point.

  94. Fasting doesn't make us weak and dependent.

  95. Fasting just reveals how weak and dependent

  96. we've been all along.

  97. I take it as good, friends, isn't it?

  98. To feel our need at times.

  99. Number one, it's about feeling our need.

  100. Number two, it's about focusing on truth.

  101. So according to the Bible, we're not just bodies.

  102. We're just matter.

  103. We are body and soul beings.

  104. That really matters.

  105. Body and soul.

  106. So fasting is a way of reminding ourselves

  107. that there's so much more to life

  108. than just our physical needs.

  109. Again, we've seen that already in Matthew's gospel

  110. with Jesus' temptation back at chapter four.

  111. Jesus is led, not by the devil,

  112. he is led by the spirit into the wilderness.

  113. Huge is symbolic.

  114. But Jesus, what does he do there?

  115. Jesus fasted.

  116. So Jesus is there humbled by taking on human flesh.

  117. And he, as it were,

  118. humbles himself further

  119. by entering that place of utter dependency,

  120. doing what Adam and Israel before him

  121. failed to do in terms of obedience

  122. to the word of the Father.

  123. And so his fasting is unique in a sense.

  124. But he still sets us that pattern

  125. as he responds to the devil by saying,

  126. man shall not live by bread alone,

  127. but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

  128. So here's the thing.

  129. See, when we deprive our bodies of food,

  130. it is for the express purpose

  131. of allowing our souls to feast on the word of God.

  132. Will I say that again?

  133. When we deprive ourselves of food,

  134. it is for the express purpose

  135. of feasting our souls on the word of God.

  136. And you'll find all sorts of different people

  137. through the Bible story

  138. choosing to fast for different reasons.

  139. But what's really interesting with all this stuff

  140. is that there was one day in particular

  141. in the Old Testament

  142. that God told his people to fast.

  143. This is great.

  144. You with me?

  145. One day in particular,

  146. he commanded his people to fast.

  147. This day that was central

  148. to the lives of God's people

  149. that we read about in Leviticus 16

  150. called the Day of Atonement.

  151. A day that happened once a year

  152. featuring one man and two goats.

  153. There's your formation.

  154. Once a year, one man, two goats.

  155. The man, the high priest,

  156. he would go into, by himself,

  157. into the holy place.

  158. He would take goat number one

  159. and he would kill the goat.

  160. The goat being sacrificed

  161. in the place of the people.

  162. And then he would come out

  163. and he would come out of the holy place

  164. where he would meet goat number two

  165. and he'd take his hands

  166. and he'd place his hands on this goat,

  167. symbolically confessing

  168. all of the sins of the people

  169. on this goat

  170. and he would set it to run

  171. as far away as possible

  172. into the wilderness.

  173. And God was teaching his people

  174. in shadow form

  175. that the effect of blood being shed

  176. was that their sins were gone for good.

  177. And isn't it interesting

  178. that it's on this one day

  179. that God calls his people

  180. to fast.

  181. It's almost as if God is saying,

  182. you've got to stop what you're doing.

  183. Have I got your attention?

  184. You need to get this.

  185. And a lot of friends down south

  186. who got that text this week,

  187. you know, everybody got the text

  188. about the weather warning,

  189. heat warning, right?

  190. This is not advice.

  191. You've got to get this.

  192. And so here is God calling his people

  193. to fast.

  194. Put away your pots and pans for the day.

  195. Right?

  196. Pause your to-do list.

  197. Because you've got to lift your eyes,

  198. you've got to still your souls,

  199. you've got to focus your minds

  200. on this central thing

  201. that's right at the heart

  202. of what it means to be mine.

  203. And what is God teaching his people

  204. as they fast?

  205. He's teaching them

  206. that their greatest need

  207. is forgiveness.

  208. And because their greatest need

  209. is forgiveness

  210. and he's provided a way,

  211. it opens up the possibility

  212. to their greatest privilege,

  213. which is fellowship.

  214. And so the invitation is to come

  215. and receive it all

  216. by faith.

  217. And friends,

  218. everything that the day of atonement

  219. symbolized in these two goats,

  220. Jesus did through his work

  221. on the cross.

  222. In other words,

  223. Jesus did both.

  224. Isn't that amazing?

  225. It's the gospel.

  226. Jesus did,

  227. through his work on the cross,

  228. he did both.

  229. We've got to understand

  230. that on the cross,

  231. Jesus is not twisting the arm

  232. of a reluctant father.

  233. What is the cross

  234. but the display

  235. of the beating heart

  236. of the father

  237. to win a people for himself,

  238. to make a way for them

  239. to be his

  240. and to display his glory

  241. to the watching world?

  242. Because of what Jesus has done,

  243. the greatest privilege is ours,

  244. that we can be reconciled,

  245. our sins forgiven,

  246. united to him,

  247. we can be reconciled.

  248. We are reconciled

  249. from the moment

  250. we put our faith in him.

  251. We are reconciled

  252. to our creator.

  253. And the greatest privilege

  254. known to man

  255. is opened up.

  256. The privilege of calling

  257. our creator God,

  258. calling him

  259. and knowing him

  260. as our father.

  261. Which when you think about it,

  262. is that not the ultimate name drop?

  263. To say that the creator

  264. of all things,

  265. I know him.

  266. Personally,

  267. I know him.

  268. Do you know what?

  269. He knows me.

  270. It's the ultimate name drop.

  271. Which takes us

  272. to the third reason, friends,

  273. that we fast.

  274. And I recognize

  275. we're going through this quickly,

  276. but we'll get into the text

  277. with this one.

  278. Third reason that we fast

  279. is simply to seek

  280. the face

  281. of the father.

  282. You know,

  283. there was a recent survey

  284. done in the UK

  285. that revealed that

  286. 30%

  287. of men and women

  288. in this country

  289. feel like

  290. they lack purpose.

  291. And 25%

  292. of young adults

  293. feel that they lack

  294. security and love.

  295. not quite alarming,

  296. actually.

  297. Maybe that is

  298. exactly where

  299. you're at today.

  300. But see,

  301. for the Christian believer,

  302. the bedrock

  303. of our identity

  304. is entirely

  305. caught up

  306. in that word

  307. father.

  308. United to Christ,

  309. it is the birthright

  310. of every single believer

  311. to call him

  312. that.

  313. You know,

  314. last week, friends,

  315. my soul,

  316. see if you just skim

  317. your eyes back

  318. to verse 8.

  319. And at the end of the day,

  320. honestly,

  321. I'm just one sheep

  322. telling you how

  323. I fed on green grass.

  324. Telling another sheep,

  325. right.

  326. My soul

  327. was so

  328. encouraged

  329. by verse 8.

  330. I needed to be reminded

  331. of this,

  332. of my father's

  333. complete knowledge

  334. and love for me.

  335. Do you see that

  336. when we pray?

  337. Notice verse 8.

  338. Because my mind

  339. so often goes

  340. like my phone

  341. into predictive

  342. text mode.

  343. Right?

  344. I read that

  345. and I thought

  346. it should say

  347. my father knows

  348. what I'm going to say

  349. before I say it.

  350. Right?

  351. But see,

  352. it's so much deeper

  353. than that.

  354. Right?

  355. He's not in the business

  356. of finishing

  357. my sentences.

  358. It's what old

  359. couples do.

  360. Isn't it?

  361. Remember that song

  362. in Frozen?

  363. It's crazy how we

  364. finish each other's

  365. sandwiches.

  366. That's not what

  367. this is saying.

  368. Do you see it?

  369. So comprehensive

  370. is his commitment

  371. to his children.

  372. He knows what I need

  373. before I even ask.

  374. Do you see that?

  375. And it's amazing

  376. to think

  377. when I call

  378. on him

  379. at any time

  380. of the day

  381. like Derek read

  382. earlier,

  383. in Christ

  384. drawn by the Spirit

  385. to the throne

  386. of the Father.

  387. When I cry out

  388. to him

  389. because he loves me

  390. I'll never get voicemail.

  391. He loves us.

  392. I always loved

  393. that old Puritan

  394. saying

  395. to live often

  396. in the smiles

  397. of God.

  398. In fact,

  399. see if we did

  400. a kind of heat map

  401. for the word

  402. Father

  403. in the Sermon

  404. of the Mount

  405. it would go

  406. really red

  407. at this point.

  408. Right?

  409. See when you

  410. take in

  411. the first

  412. 18 verses

  413. of chapter 6

  414. heat map

  415. the word

  416. Father

  417. it comes up

  418. all the time

  419. here.

  420. Jesus is talking

  421. about giving

  422. and praying.

  423. Craig did

  424. such a good job

  425. of taking us

  426. through that

  427. last few weeks.

  428. Today we're

  429. thinking about

  430. fasting.

  431. What connects

  432. to these three

  433. things is that

  434. they are the

  435. three great

  436. Jewish religious

  437. identifiers.

  438. You want to know

  439. somebody's really

  440. into God?

  441. Look for these

  442. three things.

  443. And Jesus

  444. has deliberately

  445. used that term

  446. Father six

  447. times already.

  448. See if you're

  449. counting.

  450. And he's about

  451. to use it

  452. twice more

  453. in our verses

  454. here.

  455. And here's

  456. why.

  457. Because if we

  458. aren't secure

  459. in his love

  460. for us

  461. and if we're

  462. not living

  463. from his

  464. love for us

  465. if we think

  466. it's about us

  467. living for his

  468. love

  469. do you know

  470. what's going

  471. to happen?

  472. Our hearts

  473. will go looking

  474. for praise

  475. in all sorts

  476. of places.

  477. Yeah?

  478. Looking for

  479. praise in all

  480. sorts of

  481. places.

  482. And that's

  483. what's going

  484. on in chapter

  485. six these

  486. verses 16

  487. 17 18

  488. do you see?

  489. Jesus knows

  490. that his

  491. disciples are

  492. living in a

  493. world that's

  494. full of

  495. fake fasting.

  496. Do you see

  497. it?

  498. Because what's

  499. happened is

  500. that the

  501. Pharisees

  502. who at the

  503. end of the

  504. day aren't

  505. lovers of

  506. God.

  507. Jesus would

  508. say they are

  509. lovers of

  510. self.

  511. They've

  512. taken this

  513. command.

  514. They've

  515. taken this

  516. instruction

  517. to fast.

  518. They've

  519. taken something

  520. that's meant

  521. to be God

  522. honoring and

  523. they've twisted

  524. it and they've

  525. made it

  526. something completely

  527. self-serving.

  528. That's what's

  529. going on in

  530. these verses.

  531. I mean think

  532. about it right?

  533. If you want to

  534. convince people

  535. that you're a

  536. really religious

  537. person and

  538. deadly serious

  539. about it

  540. let them see

  541. you give.

  542. That's not

  543. difficult.

  544. Let them

  545. see you

  546. pray.

  547. Hear you

  548. pray.

  549. That's not

  550. difficult.

  551. Quite easy

  552. actually.

  553. But see if

  554. that's the

  555. game that

  556. you're in.

  557. Here's the

  558. problem.

  559. Think about

  560. it that you've

  561. got with

  562. fasting.

  563. Very

  564. definition.

  565. By very

  566. very definition.

  567. You can't

  568. see it.

  569. Yeah?

  570. So what do

  571. you do in

  572. verse 16?

  573. Well you

  574. screw up your

  575. face.

  576. You hold

  577. your tummy.

  578. You groan.

  579. You put a

  580. little bit of

  581. dirt under

  582. your eyes.

  583. I don't know

  584. what you do.

  585. But do you

  586. know what

  587. this is?

  588. This is

  589. tell me you're

  590. fasting without

  591. telling me you're

  592. fasting.

  593. Isn't it?

  594. Tell me you're

  595. fasting without

  596. telling me you're

  597. fasting.

  598. This is what

  599. you do.

  600. And Jesus is

  601. unmasking this

  602. whole facade.

  603. And he's

  604. helping his

  605. disciples see that

  606. although the

  607. world might sit

  608. up and admire

  609. that God's

  610. not sitting

  611. in heaven

  612. applauding that.

  613. And Jesus

  614. says see when

  615. you watch

  616. somebody do

  617. that know

  618. that the

  619. praise of

  620. man is what

  621. they're doing

  622. it for and

  623. also know

  624. that that's

  625. all they're

  626. going to

  627. get.

  628. You

  629. however

  630. because you're

  631. secure in the

  632. Father's love

  633. seek him in

  634. secret.

  635. You know

  636. the big

  637. invitation about

  638. fasting here

  639. is that no one

  640. should know that

  641. you're fasting.

  642. You see it?

  643. Seek him in

  644. secret.

  645. He might be

  646. unseen to you

  647. but make no

  648. mistake that what

  649. you're doing and

  650. seeking him is

  651. not unseen to

  652. him.

  653. Why do you

  654. do it?

  655. You don't do

  656. it because you

  657. want the

  658. praise of

  659. man.

  660. Why do you

  661. do it?

  662. Because I

  663. want him.

  664. Which takes

  665. us to the

  666. fourth reason

  667. that we

  668. fast.

  669. Why do we

  670. fast?

  671. Because friends

  672. we are longing

  673. for home.

  674. Because fast

  675. forward a few

  676. chapters into

  677. chapter 9 of

  678. verse 14.

  679. Turn there if

  680. you want.

  681. I'll put some

  682. verses on the

  683. screen.

  684. the Pharisees

  685. in this scene

  686. they come to

  687. Jesus and

  688. they say

  689. why don't

  690. your disciples

  691. fast?

  692. And it's

  693. almost as if

  694. they never

  695. quite get over

  696. this.

  697. John's

  698. disciples come

  699. to why don't

  700. your disciples

  701. fast?

  702. And again

  703. my mind in

  704. predictive text

  705. mode.

  706. Jesus could

  707. have said

  708. they're not

  709. fasting because

  710. they're doing

  711. exactly what I

  712. told them to

  713. do a few

  714. chapters ago.

  715. Why can't

  716. you see them

  717. fasting?

  718. Because I

  719. told them that

  720. they shouldn't

  721. let anyone

  722. see that

  723. they're fasting.

  724. He could

  725. have said

  726. that.

  727. But that's

  728. not what

  729. Jesus says.

  730. His disciples

  731. aren't fasting.

  732. Why?

  733. Because the

  734. groom is

  735. here.

  736. and he's

  737. picked his

  738. metaphor

  739. splendidly.

  740. The Bible

  741. is,

  742. friends,

  743. one great

  744. story about

  745. God and

  746. his pursuing

  747. love for

  748. his people.

  749. So much

  750. so that

  751. the only

  752. way I

  753. take it,

  754. that the

  755. metaphor that

  756. God gives

  757. us and runs

  758. right through

  759. scripture is

  760. that of a

  761. groom and

  762. a bride.

  763. And here

  764. is Jesus

  765. saying,

  766. I am

  767. that great

  768. groom.

  769. I've come

  770. on a

  771. mission.

  772. I've come

  773. to save

  774. my bride.

  775. And I'm

  776. with them

  777. now.

  778. Do you

  779. know what?

  780. One day

  781. my disciples

  782. will fast.

  783. And it will

  784. be the day

  785. that I go.

  786. And then

  787. they'll fast

  788. because they

  789. are waiting

  790. for my

  791. return.

  792. But not

  793. now.

  794. I'll come

  795. on to see

  796. this in a

  797. few weeks.

  798. Not now.

  799. I've never

  800. been to a

  801. wedding celebration

  802. where we're

  803. going there

  804. and the

  805. master's

  806. ceremony

  807. stands up

  808. and says,

  809. this is a

  810. very solemn

  811. occasion.

  812. Yeah?

  813. No, it's

  814. party time.

  815. And that's

  816. what Jesus

  817. is saying.

  818. I am

  819. here.

  820. The groom

  821. is here.

  822. But one

  823. day they

  824. will fast.

  825. And this

  826. is what is

  827. particularly,

  828. friends, if I

  829. can put it

  830. like this,

  831. this is

  832. particularly

  833. what is

  834. New Testament

  835. about fasting.

  836. We're not

  837. Old Testament

  838. Israel,

  839. right?

  840. God doesn't

  841. command us

  842. to fast.

  843. No, here

  844. is Jesus

  845. here encouraging

  846. us to fast

  847. as a way

  848. of reorientating

  849. ourselves to

  850. the goodness

  851. of the

  852. gospel.

  853. Now, we

  854. always, every

  855. night in our

  856. house we find

  857. it at

  858. dinner time.

  859. Kids, tea's

  860. ready.

  861. And there

  862. they come,

  863. right?

  864. And no, no,

  865. no, we need

  866. to wait because

  867. one of the

  868. six of us

  869. isn't at this

  870. table yet.

  871. Wait, wait,

  872. wait, right?

  873. And you

  874. feel like

  875. William Wallace

  876. in that

  877. brave

  878. part of him,

  879. hold, hold.

  880. Waiting doesn't

  881. come naturally.

  882. Did you know

  883. that feeling

  884. when maybe you

  885. did it as a

  886. kid, you

  887. got to wait?

  888. There's

  889. something of

  890. that in what

  891. Jesus is

  892. saying here

  893. about fasting.

  894. Because in

  895. holding ourselves,

  896. in that moment

  897. of salivating

  898. for what's

  899. about to

  900. come, we're

  901. reminded that

  902. we long not

  903. for the dinner

  904. that we'll eat

  905. in a few

  906. hours.

  907. That's way

  908. too short-sighted.

  909. Friends, we

  910. are longing

  911. when we

  912. fast for the

  913. wedding feast

  914. of the Lamb

  915. and the

  916. fellowship we'll

  917. enjoy with

  918. him forever

  919. when our

  920. groom returns.

  921. If you're

  922. looking for

  923. something good

  924. to read,

  925. one of the

  926. best books

  927. I've read

  928. over the

  929. last year

  930. was all

  931. about this

  932. book by

  933. a guy

  934. called Chris

  935. Davis in

  936. America and

  937. it's called

  938. Bright Hope

  939. for Tomorrow.

  940. Clearly

  941. taken it from

  942. that hymn.

  943. But I love

  944. this, how

  945. anticipating Jesus'

  946. return gives

  947. strength for

  948. today.

  949. Wonderful book.

  950. Let me just give

  951. you one line

  952. from it.

  953. He puts it

  954. like this.

  955. We fast

  956. because Jesus,

  957. our bridegroom,

  958. is not here.

  959. And no matter

  960. how tasty the

  961. wedding reception

  962. spread may be,

  963. life is not

  964. complete until we

  965. are in the

  966. presence of

  967. the one who

  968. loves us.

  969. And so since we

  970. begin to wrap

  971. this up today,

  972. our time is

  973. marching on,

  974. here's two

  975. quick bits of

  976. advice as we

  977. seek to

  978. perhaps put

  979. what Jesus

  980. is saying

  981. here into

  982. practice.

  983. These will be

  984. real, real

  985. quick and we

  986. can talk about

  987. these afterwards

  988. if you want.

  989. Here's number

  990. one, friends,

  991. know your

  992. body.

  993. I'm just so conscious that as your pastor I know that that for many of us medically speaking this

  994. might not be something for all sorts of reasons that we're able to do and I don't want you feeling

  995. like you are missing out or in other words maybe or maybe other people you're a shift doctor at work

  996. or you're in something where concentration is something you really need to have because of the

  997. level of responsibility that's on you and again the name of the game is wisdom or maybe honestly just

  998. eating is a big struggle so so conscious of that maybe eating is a big struggle whoever you are

  999. here's my bit of advice just practically speaking speak to a doctor before you do anything

1000. speak to a friend but if that's practically speaking maybe spiritually speaking remember

1001. god knows how you are framed and he loves you unconditionally in christ never doubt that

1002. but otherwise there may be here thinking where would I even start with something like this

1003. again what I would say to you friends is don't try and go from zero to hero

1004. start small could you maybe miss a meal could you go for a few hours without food whatever it is

1005. friends know your body again we do this together don't we so we help one another with this stuff

1006. know your body which takes me really quickly to the second bit of advice which is really simply have a plan

1007. if we don't eat food if we go without food and all we can think about is how hungry we are

1008. then can I perhaps suggest that we've missed the point of what Jesus is talking about here

1009. our focus should be less on what we're saying no to and more on the better yes that we're saying yes to

1010. so when we feel that pang when we feel that hunger what truth are we going to take our souls to in God's

1011. words could you have a psalm for the morning and you just read a verse every half an hour or something

1012. like that what are you going to pray about what are you going to lay and spread out before your father

1013. there's something really specific that's in your mind that this is a way of just concentrating

1014. and focusing on the Lord and laying it before him are you at the start of a new season of life

1015. is there a big decision that you're facing in your life you think I just want to

1016. I just want to throw this before the father who loves me

1017. friends fasting is all about seeking the face of the father if you take one thing from this would it be

1018. that that's what it's about you know just as we close I want to bring us back to the heart of that question

1019. that we've seen over the last few weeks remember we said these three things are connected and Craig did a

1020. wonderful job at bringing out the big question that's right at the heart of this not so much in what you do

1021. it's in why you do it what was that big question remember he put it last week

1022. whose praise are we living for whose praise are we living for whose smile drives us

1023. and who at the end of the day are the only eyes in the room that we're seeking you know just as we

1024. close let me just leave you with this you know I'm just finished reading the autobiography of one of my

1025. favorite ever actors I was born in 85 look at my age so that makes me a kind of 90s kid you know

1026. my favorite actor and this is why I loved it when his autobiography came out and it was 99p on kindle

1027. um Will Smith still love Will Smith

1028. Independence Day I think one of the first films that I really like whoa what a film and then

1029. Men in Black and then Any of the State I Am Legend and then getting into Fresh Prince and the guy sings as

1030. well this guy wasn't just at the height of his career when I was growing up he was in everything

  1031. and I'm watching it

1032. I'm loving this guy so I'm reading this book and I'm really interested to see what

1033. why he did it all here is what is fascinating about what he writes about why he did what he did

1034. right he was in everything here's what he writes I didn't want to leave space between my tv show

1035. the next movie and my next record because I didn't want to give people an opportunity to fall in love

1036. with The Rock during my absence right so The Rock Dwayne Johnson the another actor who's trying to make

1037. his way as well big deal I didn't want to miss a thing because I did not want people's praise to go to

1038. him I wanted it for myself is that not really interesting about what drives people

1039. why did he keep doing it because he didn't want people to fall in love with someone else

1040. and is that not exactly the heart of the human condition is that not exactly what the Pharisees

1041. are doing here whose praise do we want we want people's praise and see the minute it goes off of us

1042. we will do anything to get it back and his book Will Smith is essentially his story of him saying

1043. it exhausted me friends what an exhausting way to live and yet how different the Christian

1044. here is the invitation from Jesus to live for the audience of one

1045. and to bask in his fatherly care and his fatherly love for us see right at the end when Jesus says

1046. the father will reward you

1047. puzzling myself all week as to what that means can I give you my best shot

1048. friends see knowing him better in his love for me

  1049. that's reward enough

  1050. let's pray

1051. oh our father we thank you so much that we have the privilege to call you father

1052. lord we are so aware of how our hearts go searching for praise in all the wrong places

1053. and it's our prayer lord that whatever's going on in our lives today that your spirit would draw us back

1054. to your knowledge of and care of and affection for us because we are united to your son

1055. father simply there is no one we'd rather seek and but father I pray pastorally that wherever this is landed in our lives

1056. father thank you that your spirit is so much more of a better pastor than I can ever be

1057. and I pray that he would be moving amongst us this morning bringing that sense of challenge and comfort

1058. and encouragement to our souls

  1059. lord we thank you

1060. that we do not have to perform

  1061. to get your love

1062. father thank you that we just place our faith in Jesus

1063. the one as Derek read at the start

1064. who loved us and gave himself

  1065. for us

1066. so father be with us as we finish our time together

1067. we pray all of these things and Jesus is worthy and in his wonderful name

  1068. Amen
