  1. All right, turn your Bibles tonight to Joshua chapter 10.

    Joshua 10 chapter mention

  2. Joshua chapter 10, the Kevin's got the idea.

    Joshua 10 chapter mention

  3. You might want to move up a little closer if you want to be

  4. able to see these especially, especially while the Sun's still

  5. out, kind of bright might be a little bit hard to see.

  6. So, move up if you want to and getting a place where you can

  7. see this pretty well. We talked about Ashkelon last

  8. week, and we talked about gas last week and I'd planned to get

  9. to La Quiche. It's a lot of times it's

  10. pronounced lakish. We pronounce it lakish kind of I

  11. guess in the English pronunciation its Lucky session.

  12. Actually they have that really. It's more like a lot quiche if

  13. you were going to say it in Hebrew but it's everybody

  14. pronounces it like that there's really not any other

  15. pronunciation as far as you know, I've mentioned last week

  16. that that sometimes there Are different pronunciations,

  17. different spellings and things like that depending on where you

  18. are, where you're from there in Israel.

  19. But lucky she's always pronounced the same way so

  20. that's what we'll call it and that's probably what I'll always

  21. call it from now on when I read it in the Bible, I've heard it

  22. so many times now but very very interesting things that happened

  23. here. So this is a The Visitor Center

  24. was actually not open the day that we were there.

  25. I don't know if I think, I think it's actually brand new so I

  26. don't even know if it had been opened period yet but that's

  27. that Remember somebody? Somebody tell me what it what a

  28. tell is this is tell lucky shush, Alex.

  29. Yeah. So a mound, basic a man-made

  30. Mound. That's the, that's an easy way

  31. to say. It's a man-made Mound because it

  32. was torn down a city was built and usually, it was already on

  33. some kind of a little bit of a mound because that's that gave

  34. it a little bit of a strategic position.

  35. And then that City got destroyed somehow or they abandon it

  36. somehow and it fell into disrepair.

  37. They completely covered it up and then took the materials that

  38. were there and built on top of it, and then covered it up and

  39. built on top of it. So many of these tells have

  40. layers and layers of civilization underneath of them.

  41. This one is a pretty obvious picture of a tell.

  42. Really you can, you can kind of tell when it's not a man-made

  43. Mound, especially because most often.

  44. It's just this mound of dirt in the middle of a middle of a

  45. field or something like that, right?

  46. But this is kind of as you're approaching La Quiche from the

  47. outside lucky, she was actually a Canaanite City and it was a

  48. Canaanite city that was conquered by Joshua.

  49. Speaking of Joshua, it's not moving anymore.

  50. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

  51. Am I reaching you? Is it moving back there?

  52. Nothing's happening. There we go.

  53. Okay, great view of it right there, as well.

  54. I'll explain what you're looking at here in just a second.

  55. But let me, let's read this. In Joshua, chapter 10 and verse

    Joshua 10 chapter mention

  56. number 31, The Joshua course, this is as they're, they're

  57. coming into the land. In fact, let me do this.

  58. Let me show you on this map. We're lucky she is.

  59. Alright, so here is the Sea of Galilee, okay?

  60. This is the northern, this is Mount Hermon.

  61. This is the north half of Israel.

  62. Try to get in a place where everybody can see it and there's

  63. two sides to this map. If you want to come, look at

  64. this one, doesn't really have a lot of places.

  65. This is more of a topography map of like the mountains in the

  66. Ali's and all that stuff. By the way, I don't know if I've

  67. mentioned this or not but the Dead Sea is the lowest place in

  68. the world. The lowest spot in the world and

  69. the Sea of Galilee is not too far behind it.

  70. As far as far as being a low place.

  71. But anyway, this is the this is the Sea of Galilee course.

  72. The Jordan River runs all the way down into the Dead Sea and

  73. then the Dead Sea doesn't have any outlet and that's why it's

  74. the Dead Sea. There's no, there's nothing

  75. alive in the Dead Sea. Of course, then all the way down

  76. here is the little finger. In fact, Let me, let me, let me

  77. show you this map. So you can get a, maybe a

  78. broader picture of what everything looks like.

  79. Okay, this is the entire land of Israel and Egypt and Jordan and

  80. Saudi Arabia and turkey and Syria.

  81. So this is, that's the entire region.

  82. All right. And that's that'll give you a

  83. pretty good view of what everything looks like here.

  84. So, Israel is basically here, of course, all of this is

  85. Mediterranean Sea. Okay.

  86. Here's Cyprus. But all of this is the land of

  87. Israel and kind of cuts off about right here and then and

  88. then back up this Sway. So all the way down this Edge,

  89. pretty much is Jordan all the way down here.

  90. Saudi Arabia. All the way here is Egypt, this

  91. is the Sinai, Peninsula, right here, which remember the

  92. children of Israel wandered in the wilderness?

  93. That was the area part of the area, where they wandered.

  94. Here's the here's the main Red Sea, and then you've got the two

  95. fingers that are coming off of that and those are actually

  96. considered the Red Sea as well, but one of them, forget what the

  97. what this golf is called Gulf of Suez, I think, is what the one

  98. on the left side is this is the Gulf of Aqaba.

  99. Aqua bra. If you're from the Jordan side

  100. is the Gulf of a lot if you're from the Israel side.

  101. So Israel calls it a lot, Jordan calls it Aqua bra on maps.

  102. Most the time, it's labeled as Aqua but they both have they

  103. both have access to that area. But really, there's a there's

  104. kind of an imaginary line, that's drawn right down the

  105. middle, and Israel has one half of it and Jordan has the other

  106. half of it, but to give you an idea then.

  107. So that's that's where you looking at everything.

  108. In a full picture. Now, this is so this is the top

  109. of that little finger right here.

  110. All right, let me pull this back up, this this, what you're

  111. looking at, on the very bottom, there's the top of this finger

  112. on this side, okay? To give you a picture.

  113. And again, the land of Israel is really not all that big in

  114. total, but Allah quiche. Okay, here's here is, here's

  115. Ashkelon. This is what we talked about

  116. last week, right? Here's a shadow.

  117. That's another one of the major cities of the Philistines like

  118. Keisha is right here. Okay, and I know you can't see

  119. it. It's too small for you to see

  120. but, but the Dead Sea, the Mediterranean Sea.

  121. It's not quite halfway, but it's about that far.

  122. All right, that's what we're talking about.

  123. So obviously, you're near the bottom, then the give K, this is

  124. then to give this is the, this is the desert area where the

  125. children of Israel wandered in the wilderness and all of that

  126. stuff, and of course, then they crossed over the Jordan.

  127. The Jordan River into the land of Canaan and that's when they

  128. started their conquest of Canaan.

  129. What was the first one that they came to and Concord Jericho,

  130. right? Jericho was the first one.

  131. What was in second one? Hey I.

  132. Yeah. And then they get into all the

  133. rest of them after that. But lucky she is one of those

  134. places that they came and and remember it was the land of

  135. Canaan. Right.

  136. So who owns it or whoo-hoo the Canaanites, right?

  137. Yeah. The land of Canaan, the

  138. Canaanites. So it was a Canaanite City when

  139. Joshua and the children of Israel came up to it.

  140. There in Joshua chapter 10, verse 31 and Joshua pass from

    Joshua 10:31

  141. Libya and all Israel with him unto Lakeisha.

  142. And encamped against it and fought against it.

  143. And the Lord delivered location to the hand of Israel, which

  144. took it on the second day and smote it with the edge of the

  145. sword and all the souls that were there in.

  146. According to all that he had done to live NE.

  147. So it was within the territory that was allotted to to Judah.

  148. And I have another map here that has all of the tribes of Israel

  149. listed on it. So this is all the land that was

  150. allotted to the tribe of Judah and you Look at this afterwards

  151. as well. It's a pretty interesting little

  152. map. But this is a this kind of a

  153. breakdown of all the different tribes and what they were given

  154. the land of Judah had the land that and of course then the

  155. Judean Wilderness, does anybody know?

  156. And we're going to look at this as well but anybody know what's

  157. significant about the Judean wilderness?

  158. In the New Testament. Jackson.

  159. Yeah, there's there's there's several things he had John, the

  160. Baptist was in the Judean Wilderness, Jesus spent 40 days

  161. and 40 nights in the Judean Wilderness.

  162. And then in the course, the Temptation was right after that

  163. and I'll show you some pictures of the Judean Wilderness.

  164. It's a lot more mountainous, then you would think it would

  165. be. But anyway, this is this is

  166. where Joshua came and some of these.

  167. And so I'm going to I'm going to go through these slides pretty

  168. quickly once we get to some of these because I'm going to kind

  169. of give you some things as I'm telling you, this story that are

  170. going to be on the slides later on.

  171. But lucky she actually became Israel.

  172. Second largest city. It was very, very heavily

  173. fortified very strategically located.

  174. I'm going to show you some pictures off the backside, not

  175. of Lucky shush, but when we get to some of these others and you

  176. can actually see the Strategic position that that they were

  177. actually in. Actually, no, it is, it is in

  178. the, it isn't lucky. She, and I'll show you that when

  179. we get up to the top of like uh but you're only seeing a very,

  180. very small part of the actual city right there, it actually.

  181. Because it gets you get up to the top of that hill and then it

  182. goes back that way. So you really can't see it from

  183. where we're looking at. You'll be able to tell as we get

  184. further into it, but There's maybe a little bit further back.

  185. All right, I think I think we have a picture here in just a

  186. minute of what it actually would have looked like when it was

  187. fully constructed and everything else.

  188. And let me back up a little bit. Okay, I'm going to point this

  189. out to you and you'll have to remember it okay on the far

  190. right side of that. Tell you see what looks like a

  191. bunch of rocks that have fallen down, right?

  192. Okay. I'm going to point that out to

  193. you because it's going to be significant later, all right?

  194. Right. I'll remind you about what that

  195. is but this is again, this is so where you see those the, the

  196. stone wall right there that's going up, which obviously, you

  197. know, the and the guide said, man, this is all brand-new, this

  198. is beautiful and it was actually very very nice the way they did

  199. it with the pathway going up there and everything else.

  200. But that would have actually been the main entrance to the

  201. city. And remember last week, I talked

  202. to you about some some different four-chambered Gates and things

  203. like that. I'm going to give you a picture

  204. of that here just a minute. This is actually some of the old

  205. wall. Now here's something that you'll

  206. notice, and you're going to have to look really close to be able

  207. to see it. I might as umm did a little bit

  208. more but you see this black line right here?

  209. See that and it actually goes all the way up.

  210. You might not be able to see it all that well, but they do this

  211. in almost every place. They put a black line there to

  212. show you where they started building a reconstruction,

  213. everything below that black line is original everything above, it

  214. would have been rebuilt with stones that they found.

  215. It's not like they're, you know, making stones are going to get

  216. them somewhere else, but you can actually kind of see the

  217. difference in the construction in those, you know, in that wall

  218. and really the difference is that was all reconstructed later

  219. on so you could get a better picture of what it actually

  220. looked like. But then, so, you know what's

  221. original? And what's not, they put a

  222. little black line, right there, and kind of, like, at our line

  223. or something like that. That's actually what the, what

  224. the city would have looked like, and you can imagine imagine

  225. coming up to that City. Not only do you have archers and

  226. everybody else with stones, you know, they sling and stones and

  227. shooting arrows, but they would have boiling hot.

  228. Olive oil that they would dump over the edge as people were

  229. coming. I mean, it was, I mean for you

  230. to actually take over a city, that's why so many times.

  231. They actually would lay Siege to a city and try to starve the

  232. people out or, you know, do all the things because it was, I

  233. mean, you lost you would lose a lot of men going up to a city

  234. like that, so like it. Lucky's was a Canaanite.

  235. City was conquered by Joshua, that is a picture of sennacherib

  236. which he'll be significant in just a minute.

  237. There you go. There's a there's where it's at

  238. in relation to the Dead, Sea and Gaza and everything else.

  239. I pointed it out to you there on the map.

  240. It heavily fortified strategic location.

  241. And it was actually located on that major road that went from

  242. Mesopotamia to Egypt. And so that's, that's another

  243. reason why it was such a. So there's there's a couple

  244. things about every tell that you'll find out.

  245. There were always located next to a source of water.

  246. They're always located in a strategic position.

  247. And what's the third one? Oh, come on.

  248. You should know it. I can't remember, I don't know.

  249. But there was always, there was three things and I can't

  250. remember the third one it'll come to me.

  251. But, but that was two of the main things.

  252. They were always located in a strategic position.

  253. Because number one, they wanted to be in a place where they

  254. could charge some kind of money to allow people to pass through,

  255. but also they wanted to be in a position where they could easily

  256. defend themselves. So, many times, these tells are

  257. up in a place where you can see for miles in every direction.

  258. Of course, you know, this is there wasn't really, a chance of

  259. a missile, coming through the air in the 700s BC, right?

  260. You would be able to see a cloud of dust coming if there was an

  261. Army or chariots, or something like that.

  262. And obviously, you have guys that are up on those walls that

  263. are looking for that and would give them plenty of time to be

  264. prepared for an enemy that's coming.

  265. That's what the my love lucky chouette, the administrative

  266. Palace in the background and that City actually had a double

  267. wall again for the same reason, protection mostly, but you had

  268. to get over the First wall. And if you got over the First

  269. wall, then you had to deal with everybody.

  270. That was on the second wall to. So Very, very heavily fortified

  271. and that's that's the that's the reconstructive drawing.

  272. So the path that I pointed out to you, is actually the path

  273. that you see that goes up to that main gate, which I'm going

  274. to show you in just a minute, but you can actually see how big

  275. the city itself really was. It was not a small City at all.

  276. And again, I'll show you. You can see the palace in the

  277. background, pay attention to that.

  278. Because I'm going to show you where the palace where the

  279. palace ruins are today. But you can actually see how big

  280. that Palace is. And so The time of Solomon, the

  281. Jews built roads that led to the gate, so it would give them

  282. further protection. Really?

  283. If an enemy was going to try to get in through the gate, now

  284. they had to come up that road and it funnel them into a tiny

  285. narrow little place, and it gave the gave the, you know, the

  286. people in the city, even a more strategic Advantage.

  287. Not only, you know. So so they're either gonna have

  288. to try to come up the sides of it, which is almost impossible.

  289. I mean, even if you were able to make it to the top of the dirt

  290. area, now you got to try to scale straight up walls, while

  291. you're being shot. Shot at and hot oil dumped on

  292. you, right? So I mean it was not, I mean

  293. these were very well fortified places so they had to get, they

  294. had to get creative on how they, how they attack to these things.

  295. And, of course, that's what we're going to see in just a

  296. minute. But the enemy would be under

  297. Fire from the walls during the entire Advance toward the gates.

  298. Israel was a military Nation, they had their, their Mighty

  299. Men. They understood fortifications

  300. and fighting and all the stuff you see that under Joshua.

  301. Especially they would have seen how well fortified the Canaanite

  302. cities were Right. They would have, they would have

  303. known what they fought against. They would have known.

  304. That's a weakness. We don't want to do that.

  305. All that was good. We want to make sure we do that.

  306. So, and not to mention that they're taking these cities that

  307. are already pretty well fortified.

  308. So even if some of the wall gets broken down, all they have to do

  309. is rebuild a little section of wall and now they have it and

  310. obviously they had God on their side as well, but no matter how

  311. Valiant and well-trained of God was against them, they were

  312. defeated and that happened. Many many times that happened in

  313. our quiche and that's what we're going to talk about.

  314. So Micah in fact, Micah chapter 1 and Verse number 13, says o,

    Micah 1 chapter mention

  315. thou inhabitant of La Quiche. Bind The Chariot to the Swift

  316. Beast. She is the beginning of the sin

  317. to the daughter of Zion for the transgressions of Israel were

  318. found in thee. Well, who's she thought?

  319. Who's he talking about found in who lucky shush?

  320. Right? The sins of Israel were found in

  321. Lakeisha and so he said that Lucky shoes were the

  322. transgressions of Israel were found and he's course he's

  323. referring to the idolatry. And Israel.

  324. How many times do we see in the New Testament?

  325. That God told them to stay away, from the Canaanite Gods, stay

  326. away from intermingling and everything else.

  327. And they always went after bail. And after Ash ask Todd in all

  328. these other gods, right? And how many times it got have

  329. to punish them for going after these other gods.

  330. But that's exactly what happened here.

  331. Oh, there's Michael 113. But you see the city there as

  332. well. Now sennacherib was the king of

  333. Assyria. He led a campaign into Judah in

  334. 701 BC. All right.

  335. Now sennacherib this is 2nd Chronicles 31, king of Assyria

  336. came and entered into Juna Judah, and encamped against the

  337. fence cities and thought to win them for himself.

  338. Now again this is pretty significant because a lot of

  339. people try to Discount the fact that there really was an Israel

  340. or that, they were a force to be reckoned with or that they were

  341. some, you know, some kind of prize, but sennacherib who is

  342. one of the greatest Kings in that era, wanted Israel for

  343. himself. And again, for a Lot of reasons.

  344. And as we get up into Jerusalem and Galilee area and all this

  345. stuff, we'll talk a little bit more about that, but to put it

  346. in perspective. Hezekiah was the king during

  347. that time. Hezekiah was in his 14th year.

  348. As the king Hezekiah was a pretty good King.

  349. They had a few things that he did that were that were serious

  350. mistakes but the seeds of lucky she is mentioned in second

    2 Kings 18:14

  351. Kings, chapter 18, verse 14, through 17.

  352. In fact, here's what I'd like you to do turn over to Second

  353. Chronicles 32. Because that's that's also where

  354. it's mentioned. And I want to read a little bit

  355. of that passage actually. But sennacherib was it was the

  356. king of Assyria and see if I can show it to you on the map here.

  357. This is not really an it doesn't have the old.

  358. It's not labeled on here, at least that I can see anyway, but

  359. all the land that Israel had taken over and I should have

  360. looked at it ahead of time, but all the land that Israel had

  361. taken over and had conquered from the Canaanites and from the

  362. Assyrians and the jebusites and the Hittites, and all those that

  363. got mentioned over and over and over again.

  364. Well, now they're starting to want some of their land back and

  365. this is Generations later. But second chronicles, 32, and

  366. verse number 1, after these things, and the establishment,

  367. they're of sennacherib Bob King of Assyria came and entered into

  368. Judah and encamped against the fenced cities and thought to win

  369. them for himself. Now this is interesting because

  370. again Archaeology is backing up the Bible.

  371. There's not a question that sennacherib was a king who lived

  372. and had great might And his name, his his name is right

  373. there in the Bible and it says that he wanted to come and take

  374. the Israelites in his for himself.

  375. What we're going to read a little bit more of that passage

  376. in a minute. But in fact, let's read it right

  377. now, verse number 2. And when Hezekiah saw that

  378. sennacherib was come and that he was purpose to fight against

  379. Jerusalem. Now guy here is let me let me,

  380. let me show you this so you can see.

  381. Okay, La Quiche is here. Okay, here's Lucky's Jerusalem

  382. is here, so you're not talking You're really talking about

  383. probably 15 or 20 miles which for an army is nothing, right?

  384. I mean they can March 15 or 20 miles in you know, maybe the

  385. better part of a day less even as an army marching.

  386. If they were on a mission, they could get there in half a day if

  387. they had to. So he saw, and he realized that

  388. snacker was getting ready to come up and fight against

  389. Jerusalem. He took counsel with his

  390. princes, and his mighty men to stop the Waters of The

  391. Fountains, which were without the city, and they did help him.

  392. So there were was gathered, much people together who stopped all

  393. the fountains in the brook that ran through the midst of the

  394. land saying, why should the kings of Assyria come and find

  395. much water? Also, he strengthened himself

  396. and built up all the wall that was broken.

  397. And by the way, we're going to look at some of this stuff a

  398. little bit later when we get to Jerusalem and raise it up to the

  399. towers and another wall without and repaired Millo, and the City

  400. of David and make darts and shields in abundance and they

  401. set Captain War over the people and gather them together to him

  402. in the street of the Gate of the city at speak, comfortably to

  403. them saying, be strong and courageous.

  404. And Be not Afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for

  405. all the multitude that is with him.

  406. For there being more with us, than with him, with him is an

  407. arm of flesh. But with us is the Lord, Our

  408. God, to help us and to fight our battles.

  409. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king

  410. of Judah. After this, did sennacherib King

  411. of Assyria, sent his servants to Jerusalem, but he himself laid

  412. Siege against lucky. She and all his power with him,

  413. onto Hezekiah king of Judah and unto all Judah that were at

  414. Jerusalem saying Saying thus saith sennacherib king of

  415. Assyria. We're on.

  416. Do you trust that you abide in The Siege in Jerusalem?

  417. This is right here, this is exactly what we're talking

  418. about. And so, he laid Siege against,

  419. like, quiche 14th year. I went, I went the wrong way.

  420. The hill at that location was situated on.

  421. This is actually I told you that this is from Brother.

  422. David Cloud, dr. David clouds think so some of

  423. his are mixed in here a little bit.

  424. So, to avoid a direct assault on The City Gate, of course, for

  425. the reasons that we just talked about.

  426. There was not much of an opportunity to actually directly

  427. Assault. The City Gate, the Assyrians

  428. built a Siege ramp up, the southwest corner of the hill to

  429. attack the walls at a weaker point.

  430. Now that was something that was really not heard of at that

  431. point. But you remember that picture

  432. that I showed you that was where the siege ramp was and literally

  433. what they did is they just went and got all kinds of dirt and

  434. stone and anything they could find and they laid it next to

  435. the city so they can walk right up the walls right up that see

  436. dreamt that they made and walk right over the walls.

  437. But what are they going to do? Nothing that the Israelites can

  438. do at that point. All right, so and not to mention

  439. it will talk about this in a little bit but they had they

  440. there was a lot of men. There was a they had they had

  441. all kinds of military instruments when it comes to

  442. Shields to protect them. And that's what they did.

  443. The shields were there, protecting them from anything

  444. that they threw at them from the city as they were building this

  445. Siege ramp. And And they had they shot back.

  446. They had arrows and slings and everything else.

  447. So from the Syrian side, the siege of lucky she is described

  448. in a series of best reliefs found in scenarios Palace and

  449. Nineveh. Now that's where that's where

  450. snacker of came from the Assyrians Nineveh was the

  451. capital of Assyria. Here.

  452. We were talking about that in a little bit too, because we

  453. actually went to the city that Jonah fled to Joppa and you

  454. start to hear some of the things about the Assyrians.

  455. They were ruthless evil people. Ooh and no wonder Jonah ran the

  456. other direction. But Nineveh was worsen akram's

  457. Palace was at and it was so significant to him what he did

  458. there at La Quiche that he actually lined the entire inside

  459. of one of his rooms in his palace with best reliefs.

  460. All right. And let me see, that's that's

  461. actually how big it is. Now that's that's actually in

  462. the British museum. They have a lucky shroom in the

  463. British museum but in the Israel Museum where we went and I'll

  464. show you some pictures of these. As we get closer, there's going

  465. to be a couple of them on here, but they've actually recreated

  466. reconstructed it if you will and put portions of that in the

  467. Israel Museum which we were able to see, they found the actual

  468. ones and put them in the British museum where you can see.

  469. And again, these bass reliefs depicting, great detail,

  470. everything that happened at La Quiche and it lines up exactly

  471. with the Bible's account or so. As an artist rendering now

  472. that's wrong because that actually shows them and makes it

  473. look like they're going in, through the front gate.

  474. They didn't actually put it there, you can see exactly where

  475. it was that. But here's here's part of the

  476. best reliefs, all right? And so it's just this big long

  477. picture. It's almost like it's almost

  478. like if you were to take a movie and take every scene from the

  479. movie and make a picture out of it, that's essentially what they

  480. were doing. But you can see then the

  481. Assyrians attacked was slings. They attacked with the arrows.

  482. They They pushed five battering engines up.

  483. The Siege ramp to destroy the walls in there.

  484. It's kind of hard to see. I'll try to give you a second to

  485. look at these. I want to want to keep moving

  486. but it really, really interesting things.

  487. I mean and and number one the artistry for them to be able to

  488. depict exactly what's happening here.

  489. You can see it. That's a little bit closer view

  490. of it but you can see. So here's the here's the

  491. battering ram and that's what they used to get up into it.

  492. Let's see. Yeah, the city wall into

  493. Defenders are on the top. Okay, there's a little bit of

  494. labeling on here, but the Assyrian archers are here.

  495. The captives, the battering engines are here and you can see

  496. there's a guy in that battering Engine with an arrow that he's

  497. getting ready to shoot up there. Of course the long spear thats

  498. hanging off the front. That's what they would have used

  499. to just knock the walls down and they're completely protected in

  500. there, so it worked really well. But there's the, there's the

  501. crew with the battering rams for soldiers and Archer, and a

  502. shield, holder and operator for the Rams bettering our ERM

  503. Amanda doused, the tank with water to extinguish the fire

  504. bombs that were being thrown from the woman.

  505. They had, they were prepared. They had everything that they

  506. needed. There's a little bit closer.

  507. Picture of that. The Jewish prisoners are.

  508. So here's some of the things that they did, the Jewish

  509. prisoners were impaled and you can see him hanging on the top

  510. of the spears, right? That's from saying the Assyrians

  511. were not nice people. In fact, here's some other ones.

  512. There were flayed alive. I mean, they literally cut them

  513. and peel their skin off. While they were, while they were

  514. still alive the same way that you would gut a deer or

  515. something, right? Their heads were cut off.

  516. On fact, actually have a pile of heads.

  517. A lot of the Jews heads were Keep them piles.

  518. And that little thing that you see down there is a pilot Jewish

  519. heads that were all cut off during the during this battle.

  520. And all of these things are being depicted on the wall.

  521. Think he wasn't proud of what he did.

  522. He was proud of it, then the survivors were driven away as

  523. slaves, and their goods were confiscated.

  524. In fact, I'm going to tell you about Masada.

  525. Not going to do it tonight, but Masada is another one where they

  526. knew the reputation, and they were so set on not being

  527. captured and we'll talk about that.

  528. But but they were not nice to the Purrs Isaiah 316 through 26

  529. die. Men shall fall by the by The

  530. Sword, and I'm Mighty and War and our gate shall lament and

  531. mourn and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.

  532. Talking about lucky, she surviving Jewish leaders were

  533. brought before sennacherib as he sat on his throne, of course

  534. they were, you know, they were leaders.

  535. So they were made to Bow before him and all these other things.

  536. And again, all these are part of those bass reliefs that are

  537. located there, but the panel is inscribed with the words

  538. sennacherib king of the world, king of Assyria, Uh set upon a

  539. throne in the captives of lucky she passed before it.

  540. That's what it says. On the on the best relief there

  541. underneath those pictures amazing it were made to Bow

  542. before their captors. Now think this is also pretty

  543. interesting to notice their appearance they had short hair,

  544. of course there were roads but they had, you know beards and

  545. short hair. Here's a little bit closer,

  546. picture of it. Those are the leaders being

  547. carried away and you see this guy, the front being made to Bow

  548. before sennacherib. There's some copies of the best

  549. relief. That's actually some of the ones

  550. from the Israel Museum. Those are just copies of what

  551. they have in the in the British museum.

  552. That's the actual real thing. But So there's the seed rent

  553. there's The City Gate, lots of excavations have been done in

  554. Lucky since the 1930s and they found all kinds of things there

  555. and and really just everything that they see perfectly lines up

  556. with the Bible account and with snack ribs account.

  557. So they know that this is the place and that's the remnant of

  558. the front gate. That's left there is that there

  559. is The Siege ramp, okay? Now this is, this is zoomed in a

  560. little bit of the picture that I showed you before, but that's

  561. the actual Siege ramp. They walked It right up the side

  562. of that thing and right over the walls and of course these the

  563. battering rams and everything else.

  564. Now this is standing up there at the top that's what the siege

  565. ramp look like from from above. I'm going to point this out to

  566. you in just a second and it'll actually be a slide where you

  567. can see it but but you go all the way down the hill and then

  568. you start to go back up the hill.

  569. And actually now it's a it's a cow Farm.

  570. They milked cows and everything else there, but that's actually

  571. worse than a crib had stationed himself.

  572. Of during The Siege so he can watch everything that was

  573. happening. Far enough away that he was away

  574. from the danger, but he could still see everything going on.

  575. That's another picture of The Siege ramp and you can just see

  576. all the different depressions and things like that in the

  577. ground from where he was at. In fact, the the gray area of

  578. there is actually where that Barn is that and that's where

  579. sennacherib was sitting there. Watching the entire thing,

  580. watching them build the siege ramp watching them, you know.

  581. Tear everybody out of there and then bring them before him,

  582. another picture of The Siege ramp there.

  583. So there's the neck rubs location during the seeds that's

  584. where he was situated. And of course this little thing

  585. here what you're looking at is the gate that's going all the

  586. way up to the top. They found all kinds of stuff

  587. sling, Stones, 850 arrowheads, lance-heads, all kinds of other

  588. things, proving that there was a very serious battle that took

  589. place there. Those are some of the stones

  590. that they would that they would. Oh and in fact the next one is

  591. there's a size of a man's fist compared to those stones.

  592. So they're big. I mean if you got hit with one

  593. of those things you're not You're not going to live.

  594. If you got hit in the head especially but again,

  595. arrowheads, those are all on display at the British museum.

  596. And there's so that's the gate that was fully excavated 13 feet

  597. tall, 80 feet wide and 80 feet deep, the largest known gate of

  598. the first temple period. So this is first temple.

  599. Period goes all the way back to the 700s BC and that's where

  600. talking there, but six-chambered gate and actually see the

  601. picture of that from the top. You can, you can very clearly

  602. see three of the chambers. And the other three chambers

  603. would be on the other side, okay?

  604. Now the ones that are on the, if you're looking at it, the ones

  605. that are on the right side are original.

  606. The ones that are on the left side are rebuilt.

  607. So you could actually see what it looked like.

  608. And obviously, you can kind of tell that from there but they

  609. would do all kinds of things in there.

  610. It would, they would, they would use it for storage.

  611. They would more than likely the first.

  612. First two would be soldiers would be stationed in there so

  613. if anybody's trying to come Through the gate, they would be

  614. able to stop them there. They would have used it for

  615. business City business. You know, any number of things

  616. that would have happened there, there's a picture of It from the

  617. ground there, and as you're walking up, you can see the

  618. chambers. All right.

  619. I'm going to show you some pictures pretty quickly of those

  620. chambers but you can see see how the chambers are there.

  621. All right. And then and then, where that

  622. fence is your actually, this, this is kind of the main gate

  623. area, then when you walk in there, you actually get into the

  624. six, Chambers, the six-chambered areas.

  625. Right here. So this is the everything on the

  626. left is pretty much original. Everything on the right is

  627. pretty much rebuilt with materials that they found there

  628. but you see they're not huge rooms but they're pretty big.

  629. I mean you think about 80 feet I mean this Auditorium front the

  630. back is like 53 feet or something like that so if you

  631. have a gate that's 80 feet deep there's quite a bit of room in

  632. it, right? There's that's what more of what

  633. it would look, what it looked like inside there.

  634. That's looking at it once you're through the gate looking back at

  635. it. There's some of the different

  636. little Chambers in there. That's, that's a lot of the

  637. original stuff on the original side.

  638. All right? There you go, some, some more of

  639. the actual Chambers and how they would have looked back then.

  640. All right. That is the ruins of the palace

  641. that we looked at and told you to kind of keep that in your

  642. mind. That's what's left of it.

  643. There is that's Lucky's from the top.

  644. So I am up standing right there. I was not, I was not even all

  645. the way over where the siege ramp was not quite as far over

  646. as that, but You can see how actually opened that would have

  647. been and how many, how many things they would have been able

  648. to fit their, you see the path that's going there.

  649. And it's and it's very hard to tell probably from where you

  650. are, but those are people on there.

  651. So that'll give you a kind of a bigger better picture of it and

  652. of how it actually, how big it actually is.

  653. This is somebody walking right here.

  654. Okay, somebody walking in that corner.

  655. I guess that's the only two but this this year would have been

  656. where the palace was. All of this would have been

  657. houses for the most part and places of business things like

  658. that. I'll just go through these kind

  659. of quickly and give you some more of these pictures.

  660. So this is looking and talking about a strategic location,

  661. okay? That's the Judy and Highlands

  662. there in the background that you're looking at, but you can

  663. see from miles and miles and miles from the top of that, that

  664. tell. And again for very obvious

  665. reasons, they wanted to be able to see anything that was coming.

  666. These are some of the ruins of the houses, that would have been

  667. in there. And they've done a lot of

  668. excavations through there, that's kind of looking from the

  669. back. Looking back up at the top,

  670. where the palace Was again for a couple of reasons.

  671. The palace was built higher number one, it gave it a little

  672. bit more of a strategic position.

  673. They would have to take the lower spots first, if there were

  674. trying to conquer it before they got to the Palace but also

  675. remember they didn't have air condition or anything like that.

  676. And so the higher you were the more likely you were to be

  677. exposed to some more air flow and what it made it cooler

  678. during the summer for the for the king, there's the palace but

  679. a lot of Kings actually had went Enter Palace isn't summer

  680. palaces, and they would, you know, depending on what season

  681. it was. They would go there because it

  682. was a lot more comfortable and they could do whatever they

  683. wanted. So they did it.

  684. That's actually what the palace would have looked like, I took a

  685. picture of it didn't turn out really great so I didn't put it

  686. in here. But see that little hole on the

  687. top, it actually had an overlay of of the existing structure

  688. that still there with the palace.

  689. On top of it. Not a great picture, but that's

  690. what the palace would have looked like they're in the

  691. middle of La Quiche. That's looking down from like

  692. quiche and so you can see again how just how vast that area.

  693. Is the Judy and Highlands again are in the background but just

  694. gives you a picture of how strategic that position really

  695. was and how much they could see as things were coming.

  696. Now, this was one of those chambers the benches where the

  697. judges in the city Elder set are still there, you can still see

  698. them, that's what extent means. But those are the benches that

  699. Beersheba at the Beersheba gate, but the ones that Lucky's were

  700. very, very similar to that and I actually had an arm arm rest on

  701. those. There's some of the excavations

  702. that we're going on there like quiche and everything that they

  703. found their backs, everything up to the Bible says, from the

  704. idolatry. And they found all kinds of

  705. little figurines of Baal and all kinds of stuff.

  706. All kinds Kinds of things that they found that that proves

  707. exactly what the Bible says. That that this was kind of a

  708. seat of idolatry and God was going to destroy it and

  709. obviously you see that's exactly what happened.

  710. So Mike identified locations the place where the transgressions

  711. were found and of course, Northern Israel is idolatry and

  712. they found all of that stuff. But obviously than Josiah, he

  713. removed the high places break the pillars cut down the after I

  714. break in pieces. The Brazen serpent that Moses

  715. had made for under those days. The children of Israel did burn

  716. incense to and he called it. The who stood on this is pretty

  717. interesting to, they found a toilet in the bail chamber, but,

  718. but we're eating second Kingston and 27 how that Jake who made

  719. the bail Temple and Samaria into a toilet.

  720. And I think that's pretty interesting.

  721. That's, you know, likeness of what it would have been.

  722. Me, let me, let me have you turn 21 last passage here in second

    2 Kings 19 chapter mention

  723. Kings chapter 19. One last passage about.

  724. Brother, Josh while we're doing this, can you go to the next

  725. one? Second Kings, 19 verse 32.

    2 Kings 19:32

  726. Therefore thus said the Lord concerning the king of Assyria,

  727. who is the king of Assyria. Sennacherib.

  728. He shall not come into this city.

  729. What city? No Jerusalem, he conquered

  730. lucky, shush. He's talking about Jerusalem

  731. there, he's not going to come into Jerusalem and God God's

  732. talking Hezekiah here. I should have should have give

  733. you a little background but he shall not come into this city,

  734. nor shoot an arrow there. Nor come before it was Shield

  735. nor cast a bank against it. What's a bank against it?

  736. Yeah. Siege ramp, right?

  737. I mean, God's talking about exactly what just happened in

  738. the quiche, right? And God saying, that's not going

  739. to happen to Jerusalem. Jerusalem were Hezekiah.

  740. Was that was actually experiencing somewhat of a

  741. Revival like quiche didn't and so God destroyed them.

  742. But he told Hezekiah it's not going to happen here by the way

  743. that he came by the same, shall he return?

  744. Well, sennacherib was a powerful powerful King and he had a huge

  745. army with him, and they were just rolling over these places.

  746. What's to keep him. From coming into Jerusalem

  747. nothing but God, right? But God said the same way that

  748. he came in as the same way that he's going to go out and shall

  749. not come into this city. Say at the Lord, for I will

  750. defend this city to save it for my own sake and for my servant

  751. David sake and it came to pass that night.

  752. That the angel of the Lord went out and smote in the camp of the

  753. Assyrians and 104 score and 5,000, it's 185 thousand men.

  754. And when they arose early in the morning behold they were all

  755. dead Corpses. So sennacherib king of Assyria

  756. departed and went and returned and dwelt at Nineveh.

  757. He came back, went back the same way that it came in and it came

  758. to pass as he was worshipping. And the house of Nish Rock his

  759. God that Ajram Alec and Sherry sir.

  760. His sons smote him with the sword and they escaped into the

  761. land of Armenia and Sr had in his son, reigned in his stead.

  762. So God said, okay snacker of you can go ahead and take like

  763. quiche there, they've sinned against me, they've turned

  764. against me, you're not coming into Jerusalem and that night.

  765. Right as they Camp. God killed 185 thousand

  766. Assyrians. He woke up the next morning and

  767. it's just nothing but a see a dead bodies, and he cut his

  768. losses and went back to Nineveh and when he was worshiping in

  769. the house of his God, his sons, his own Sons came in and killed

  770. him. If that's not God's hand on his

  771. chosen nation and on his City Jerusalem, I don't know what is

  772. All right, don't over the 1st. Samuel 17 is a very familiar

  773. story to you. Oh let me show you this.

  774. While you're turning over that groover in National Park is

  775. actually, and this is just very, very short, we stopped here on

  776. the way through this is actually an Amphitheater.

  777. Now, there's a difference between a theater and an

  778. Amphitheater, okay? You've probably you've heard of

  779. a theater and a lot of times somebody will come in and say,

  780. oh, look at the amphitheater, it's not an Amphitheater, it's a

  781. theater, a theater was something where they would perform plays

  782. and readings and things like that on a Stage and Amphitheatre

  783. is one where I had seating all the way around it, all right and

  784. that's what this was. Okay?

  785. Amphitheatre is a structure that typifies Roman culture.

  786. It was used for Gladiator. Combat public displays military

  787. training had enough seats for 3500 people.

  788. And that's all in Ruins. I mean a lot of the seating has

  789. been redone. It's just wooden back.

  790. Then it would more than likely have been Stone and all of them

  791. were but it was built on a foundation of a series of barrel

  792. vaults which you see those all the way through.

  793. And if you kept going around, you'd see him all the way around

  794. there. But the the Arches were used as

  795. service tunnels for the arena. And I'll show you one of those

  796. in a second. But the amphitheater was in use

  797. for over 200 years until his damaged by an earthquake in 83

  798. 63. Old, this thing is, but there's

  799. the underneath of the amphitheater.

  800. That's where the animals were kept.

  801. So when they and, and again, lots and lots, and lots and lots

  802. of blood spilled in that, in that Arena, right there.

  803. Christians that were killed. Christians, that were made to

  804. fight each other Christians that were made to fight Gladiators

  805. Christians that were made to fight wild animals.

  806. That's where the wild animals would have been kept before they

  807. were released. So this is actually, this is the

  808. entrance. What you're seeing right here is

  809. the entrance into that. Into the amphitheater.

  810. And so this would have been here.

  811. If you went out that side, you would actually see the same

  812. Arena that we just looked at. There's some different that was

  813. that was a like a little trough that went all the way around it

  814. as a little bit of a way of protection that's looking at it

  815. from the outside a couple different pictures there.

  816. So it was a it was a real quick stop but it was a pretty

  817. interesting stop and we actually have some more good pictures of

  818. an Amphitheater here later on, but the valley of elah.

  819. And I'm going to try to cover this fairly quickly, but I want

  820. you to be able to see some of these pictures.

  821. So Really the the allow Valley. The valley of elah, it's It's

  822. called both but obviously what happened there.

  823. Does anybody remember Riley? David fought Goliath, right?

  824. And it's all still there. The battle between David and

  825. Goliath. 14 miles west of Bethlehem, where David came from

  826. that morning. What was he doing in Bethlehem?

  827. Then the Sheep right? That's what he did.

  828. He was just a young man. He won the kid but Bethlehem is

  829. right here. Okay, here's the Dead Sea.

  830. Here's the Mediterranean Sea. Here's here is lucky.

  831. She hears Bethlehem and it's not marked on this map where a law

  832. is at but 14 miles, west of Bethlehem, okay?

  833. So some were right in this area is where where the valley of a

  834. law is and where David fought Goliath?

  835. And you can kind of see it right there, there's there's Ashkelon,

  836. there's ashdod, there's ekron, there's gas, those were all

  837. those five, get Gaza Ashkelon ashdod, ekron and gather the

  838. five major Philistine cities and of course, this is right in the

  839. middle of it. So the the Egyptian I mean the

  840. Philistines and the Israelites were constantly at war with each

  841. other for a period of time there.

  842. But they wanted to push East and Conquer Israel's territory.

  843. And that battle was a major event in the war.

  844. Well, obviously, they were at a standoff You know, the story,

  845. right? But let's, let's look at verse

  846. number one, second first, Samuel 17 one.

  847. Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle,

  848. and we're gathered together at Soco, which is how you say that,

  849. which belongs to Judah and pitched between, So Co and has a

  850. car in FS, damn him. All right.

  851. Now, when I give you some pictures of this, okay?

  852. That's where it's labeled. There is where the Philistines

  853. were encamped. That was so cool.

  854. And then what you see down there in the middle, that wide-open

  855. field is the valley of elah ha. And then this hill, which didn't

  856. really have a name, is where Israel was camped.

  857. Well actually does it say that? Yeah, they It only says where

  858. the Philistines were at but they because they had a huge huge

  859. line and a huge position. So there's the allow Valley.

  860. Israel of course then verse number 2, Saul in the men of

  861. Israel were gathered together and pitched by the valley of

  862. elah and set the battle in Array against the Philistines.

  863. I've got some other pictures of this that I think is going to

  864. help you see it a little bit better in just a second.

  865. But verse number 3 and the Philistine stood on a mountain

  866. on the one side and Israel, stood on a mountain on the other

  867. side and there was a valley between them well in the Bible.

  868. As they stood on the mountain, they were actually standing on a

  869. mountain. I mean, it's not, you know, it's

  870. not Mount Everest, but it's high.

  871. It's really high and you'll see a picture of that in a second.

  872. There's so this is Israel was on the left Philistines were on the

  873. right? This is looking East toward

  874. Bethlehem. Okay?

  875. And here's some some some better pictures of it there, see how

  876. big that actually is the field and all of that stuff there so

  877. that the Philistines were up on this hill and Soco.

  878. There's the valley of your law and then you had Israel that

  879. were up here. And you think, you know, how

  880. did, how did Goliath here? I mean, how did the Israelites

  881. here, Goliath shouting well? Number one, there was no traffic

  882. noise, right? I mean, when you're standing

  883. there in the valley below, there's there's a road running

  884. right behind you, and you here. A lot of traffic and everything

  885. else. None of that would have been

  886. there. Of course, the Israelites were

  887. pretty scared and it's pretty obvious by the story that they

  888. were pretty scared of Goliath, right?

  889. We didn't actually do it but as I watched a video of a somebody

  890. that was that was there and his wife was standing up where the

  891. Israelites would have been and he ran all the way down into the

  892. valley about about a third of the way and he said, send me a

  893. man is why should I can hear you like?

  894. You're standing right next to me.

  895. So I'm going to go a little farther and he went to Two

  896. thirds of the way and same thing.

  897. He went all the way to the other side.

  898. He hollered send me a man to fight and she's like, I can hear

  899. you. And you can hear him and her

  900. talking to each other. I mean, they're yelling but not

  901. that loud. So you got a man like Goliath,

  902. who was as big as he was with probably a booming voice and and

  903. you know they would have understood that Goliath was no

  904. small guy and nobody would have wanted to fight him.

  905. So there's some more pictures of it.

  906. May be a little bit better picture of the the mountain that

  907. the Israelites. Were on.

  908. There you go. That's a lot better picture of

  909. it. That's our group.

  910. Somebody in our group brought a drone and I went a lot of fly at

  911. every place. You're not allowed to fly it

  912. into any of the national parks or anything like that.

  913. But actually gave us some pretty good perspectives.

  914. So I'm going to show you the the Eli Brooke here in just a

  915. minute. But I wanted to point it out

  916. with arrows on here so you can see this is actually a road that

  917. kind of keeps going there. So that you'll have Brooke

  918. starts here and goes around kind of back toward the mountain

  919. where the Israelites would have been at.

  920. But that's that is Brooke that David would have taken the

  921. stones out of obviously, it's dry most of the year.

  922. It's dry only for only during the really heaviest rainy

  923. season. Is there any water in that book?

  924. But there it is. That's the Brooke.

  925. I mean, it is. I mean, look at it.

  926. There's not much to it, right? And I brought back a bunch of

  927. stones from the from the brook and I've got them here.

  928. So I'll give one to every family.

  929. When we get finished tonight, you can pick one and take it

  930. home with you. And leave it sitting somewhere

  931. if you want to. There's the brook and the road

  932. actually keeps going the brook turns and goes back toward the

  933. mountain there. Again, there it is.

  934. That's where it turns and goes back.

  935. Very, very small. I mean, you think I don't know

  936. what and my mind, I don't know what I thought before because

  937. now this is all I see when I think about it, but I think as a

  938. kid, especially I thought it was this massive Brooke that he had

  939. to Wade through to get to the other side to go fight Goliath

  940. and he picked up some stones on his way past.

  941. Well, no, wonder he pick stones out of the brook, it was no

  942. water in it, you know, and it was very easy for him to just

  943. pick a few stones and keep going.

  944. So that's that's where it was at now.

  945. The Things. So, the hill that we were just

  946. looking at is the one right there, where it shows you that

  947. Israel was was that and then you have So Co and the valley of

  948. elah and then, but the Philistines Camp, the Philistine

  949. line went from Sokol all the way around to Oz a car.

  950. For, for David, to be able to go and fight Goliath and have a

  951. winner-take-all battle, was a huge Advantage for the

  952. Israelites. They were surrounded almost and

  953. the filler. I mean, you could just imagine

  954. everywhere you look there was Philistines camped and Israel

  955. was on that little spot right there and they didn't have a lot

  956. of people and I'm surprised the Philistines didn't just you know

  957. attack and you know take them over but what for obviously God

  958. knew what he was doing but Philistines gathered together

  959. their armies to battle and we're gathered together at so Yoko.

  960. Which belongs to Judah and pinched between pitch between So

  961. Co. And as a car, which is way way.

  962. And I'm going to show you a video here in a second.

  963. All right. This is it, okay?

  964. So this is the valley of elah. That's what we're looking at,

  965. right here. That's what we're standing in

  966. over here is Soco where the where the Philistines were at

  967. And it doesn't, it doesn't give you.

  968. I don't know why it gets so choppy.

  969. It works fine on my computer and we put it on that one back there

  970. and it gets choppy but look how wide that is.

  971. And it's just a bad but look how much land the Philistines had

  972. where all their people were. I was a car is the tallest spot

  973. right there. See that little that little spot

  974. in between the trees, that's that's as a car where the

  975. Philistines rat they had all of that land all the way around.

  976. Now, what you're going to see here is the is the mountain that

  977. the Israelites and where he's walking right, there is actually

  978. in the brook. But that's that's that's the

  979. spot that the Israelites had the Philistines, had everything else

  980. all the way around there. Pretty amazing, pretty amazing.

  981. So they gathered a hill on the northeast side That's the valley

  982. of elah in the middle. That's the Philistines

  983. northernmost flank that's Ozzy cos zoomed in as we were

  984. leaving. We were able to get some good

  985. pictures of it, just because it was so far away, it really was

  986. amazing. So, in fact, let's look back in

  987. first Samuel 17, verse number 4. And there went out a champion

  988. out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath of

  989. gath, which we talked about and we were there, remember?

  990. Or we saw it whose height was six.

  991. Cubits, and a span. How tall is that?

  992. 9 foot 9 inches pretty much. All right?

  993. And he had a helmet of brass upon his head and he was armed

  994. with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat, was 5000

  995. shekels of brass. Guess, we don't have the actual.

  996. Oh yeah, yeah. Made of brass plates arranged

  997. like the scales of a fish that weight about 125 pounds.

  998. How much do you weigh Jackson? About that, right?

  999. Well, Bryan's 125. So imagine walking around with

1000. Brian on your back. Now, you'd be dead, you know, I

1001. don't do any of that, but I think Jackson's, I think roughly

1002. 125 no less than that. Okay, so, so, so carrying around

1003. this coat of mail, that's that's even heavier than probably Alex

1004. and Riley combined, right? I mean, that's, That's Heavy.

1005. It's a big guy, I'm not gonna imagine how big Goliath must

1006. have been but verse number 6, in the end, he had Greaves of brass

1007. upon his legs and a target of brass between his shoulders and

1008. the staff of his spear was like a Weaver's beam.

1009. And the spears head weighed 600 shekels of iron 15 pounds.

1010. And one bearing a shield went before him and he stood and

1011. cried into the armies of Israel. Instead of them.

1012. Why are you come out to set your battle in Array?

  1013. Am I not a Philistine? I'm not a Philistine and you

1014. servants to Saul choose, you a man for you and let him come

1015. down to me. If he be able to fight with me

1016. and to kill me, then will be your servants.

1017. But if I Prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our

1018. servants and serve us. The Philistine said I defy the

1019. armies of Israel. This day, give me a man.

1020. That we may fight together. So there's Goliath, defier

1021. defied, the armies of Israel and he cursed them in the name of

1022. his false gods. In fact.

1023. Let's look at look at verse number 43.

1024. I'm not I'm the wrong passage. Let me get there.

  1025. First Samuel 17, verse number, 43.

1026. And the Philistine said on a David, am I a dog that they'll

1027. come to me, with staves and the Philistine cursed David by his

1028. Gods. So cursing cursing, and of

1029. course, David understood that it was it was God's honor.

1030. That was at stake. It was more than just that.

1031. But verse 17 and 18 were or were there.

1032. We can go back and look at that. Look at that passage, if you

1033. want to look at it there where you can look at it up on the

1034. screen. Jesse said in a David his son

1035. take now for that brother and thief of this parched corn, the

1036. Ten Loaves and run to the camp to thy Brethren.

1037. Carry these ten Cheese's under the captain of their house of

1038. their thousands and all thy Brethren fair and take their

1039. pledge. See how they're doing, come back

1040. and let me know, David Rose up early in the morning and left

1041. the sheep with a keeper and took and went as Jesse had commanded

1042. him and he came to the trench as the host was going forth to

1043. fight each other for the battle. So David understood again that

1044. the issue was God's testimony and he volunteered to fight.

  1045. David wasn't trusting in a sling.

1046. He was trusting in living God and you read through some of

1047. those other passages. And again, it's Saul there.

1048. And for Samuel 17 might be helpful for you to read it

1049. again, but all of, that's there. And basically, David said that

1050. exact thing I'm not coming at you.

1051. With, with all these things, I'm coming at you, in the name of

1052. the Lord Jesus Christ, right? The Lord, Our God, but this is

1053. good, verse 45 and verse 46. Then said, David to the

1054. Philistine. Now, comes to me with a sword

1055. and with a spear and with a shield, but I come to thee, in

1056. the name of the Lord of hosts, the god of the armies of Israel.

1057. Whom thou Hast defied this day, will the Lord deliver the end of

1058. my hand and I will smite thee, and take dine head from thee.

1059. Can you imagine Goliath hearing that?

1060. Some you know, David's not a little kid by the way, a lot of

1061. people, you know, a little Shepherd boy who 10, 12 years

1062. old and he's out there, you know, I'm gonna take your head

1063. from you, you know. He's that's not it mean David

1064. was, you know, he was he was getting toward a grown man at

1065. that point. But everybody could still tell

1066. that he was a young man, right? And to hear.

1067. I mean, this is their champion, and he's saying to him.

1068. I'm going to take your head off and then he continues and I'll

1069. give the carcass of the host of the Philistines this day under

1070. the FAA. Fowls of the air into the wild

1071. beasts of the earth that all the Earth.

1072. May know that there is a God in Israel, that's a strong

1073. statement and that is some serious Faith, because if

1074. Goliath had gotten ahold of David, he could have snapped

1075. them in half if he wanted to. But again, David wasn't this

  1076. little boy, that's, that's depicted.

1077. In a lot of the children's stories.

1078. He was a brave. Strong young man, had fought, a

  1079. lion had fought a bear. I mean, he's not a 10 year, old

1080. kid out there. Watching sheep killing Bears,

1081. right? So he's probably around the 18,

1082. 20 years old. He said that I went out after

1083. Him smote him, delivered him out of mouth.

1084. Caught him by the beard smote him, and slew him.

1085. That's actually an Asian lion and we didn't get a chance to go

1086. to the Israel Zoo. But the Jerusalem Zoo, the

1087. Jerusalem Biblical Zoo has as many of them as are still alive

1088. because there's some of them that are extinct animals that

1089. are in the Bible. There's, there's the lion and

1090. now there's a bear the Syrian brown bear is actually extinct

1091. and Israel now, but but that's the type, that David fought and

1092. it's not as big as a North American Grizzly but It's 550

1093. pounds. If it took that thing on, By

1094. himself. Can you imagine that?

1095. And that's the Syrian brown bear.

1096. You see? The hump on the back?

  1097. That's the mark of a grizzly. I mean, that's a big animal.

1098. It's a big animal and David, David killed killed, the bear.

1099. This is actually pretty interesting, the Byzantine

1100. mosaics, because a lot of the Crusaders actually.

1101. Okay, so here at Crusader night is fighting a Grizzly.

1102. They are actually the ones that made them as think.

1103. It was a way to prove your manhood and improve your honor

1104. and your bravery to go out and kill a lion or bear with the

1105. sword. So they killed so many of them,

1106. there's nothing left and but they depicted that in the Mosaic

1107. there, and that that Mosaic is actually in the, the Israel

1108. Museum. I'll show you some pictures of

1109. that a little bit later, but this is interesting as well.

1110. You know, a lot of people telling the story, you know, put

1111. Saul's armor on it. David was walking around like

1112. this and he couldn't, you know, he couldn't handle it because he

1113. was this little kid in the armor was too big, and he told Saul, I

1114. can't wear that it was not that the armor was too big, he hadn't

1115. proved it, and that's exactly what the Bible says there.

1116. In 1st, Samuel 17 fact, if you want to look there and Verse 38,

1117. right? Saul arm David with his armor

1118. and he put on helmet of brass upon his head.

1119. Also, he armed him with a coat of mail and David, girded his

1120. sword upon his armor and his say, to go it fit him, he was

1121. ready to go with that armor. For he had not proved it and

1122. David said, unto Saul, I cannot go with these four.

1123. Have not proved them, David put them off and he said I've never

1124. really fought in this stuff, right?

  1125. I don't feel comfortable in and I don't feel like I can move

1126. around the way that I need to. It's not that he they didn't fit

1127. him or that he was this tiny little kid and Saul's big

1128. Armory, you know, looks like a kid and his dad's boots or

1129. something like that. He just he just he didn't proved

1130. it so he didn't wear it. That's that's the only reason

1131. why before David killed Goliath, he played his heart for Always

1132. described as a man of war and a mighty Valiant man.

1133. There you go. He was probably 18 to 20 years

1134. old. Not, you know, I mean again not

1135. you know, not some 40 year old hardened battle lawyer or

1136. something like that, but he was not a little kid like he's often

1137. depicted. Now this is this is the last

1138. thing here and I wanted to get to shore.

1139. I am because that's where that's where the the Philistine Army.

1140. Fled. There's a lot of pictures there

1141. that wanted to show you, and we're not going to come to do

1142. that tonight. So but the care of Tree.

1143. And that's right there in the valley of elah that's Azure.

1144. So can't really tell, but where I was standing probably in that

1145. picture was in the brook. So you walk down and you can

1146. kind of see how it's starting to come back up, that's coming back

1147. up the other side, but that there is a carob tree there in

1148. the valley and little bit closer, picture of it, but the

1149. seeds of the Caribou are actually used as a unit for

1150. weight and measure so an ephah How do you, how do you figure

1151. out how big an ephah is? Well, it was measured and

1152. weighed based on the size of the carob seeds.

1153. And so that's a carob tree there.

1154. And I think, I think maybe I'll have another picture of one a

  1155. little bit later on. I don't think I actually got a

1156. picture of a carob seed, nothing was growing at the time.

1157. You know, it was green obviously, but you'll see if you

1158. go in and look at some pictures of Israel.

1159. And think that's the last one. Make sure.

1160. Oh sure, Ryan. So well.

1161. Do that one later. There's a lot there that I want

1162. to show you. I think it's very interesting

1163. and we're out of time, but Where was I going with that, right for

1164. that. Does anybody remember what I

1165. said? Go back and listen to it real

1166. quick. Well, thanks everybody for

  1167. listening. No kidding.

  1168. The what? Sure.

1169. Am. Which Edgewood that just popped

1170. up and that's what distracted me.

1171. The trees. Oh, that's what?

1172. Okay, thank you. Everybody was listening, good.

1173. If you go back to any pictures, let's say and you look up a

1174. place you like, you might look up the valley of a law on Google

1175. and it shows up and everything is brown.

1176. And some of the places that we went, I didn't even recognize,

1177. when I went to look it up because I was trying to, I

1178. wanted to make sure that I had my location.

1179. Correct. And so, I went to look it up and

1180. I said, and I typed it in and I was like, even look like the

1181. same place, everything's Brown. Well, a couple of weeks before

1182. we went, they had a bunch of rain and just that quick,

1183. everything turned green. I mean, few days before we came.

1184. And so, I mean, you see how you can't see it anymore, but how

1185. how beautiful that Valley and how green that Valley was and

1186. how all the trees had their leaves on and everything else?

1187. I mean, and they basically say that for for most of the time

1188. through the winter doesn't get that cold, but everything's

1189. Brown and dead and the rains hit and everything turns green

1190. overnight. And so we hit a Beautiful,

1191. beautiful time. It rained on our way from the

1192. airport to our hotel, on the first night.

1193. And then for two solid weeks, there was no rain in the rainy

1194. season in Israel. It's a pretty amazing thing.

1195. Brother Cloud said, he said I've been to Israel 10 times and

1196. every time I pray that we'd have great weather and not have to

1197. not be able to go see a place because of how because the rain

1198. and he said in 10 trips here. Always right around the same

1199. time. It's never rained once And

1200. that's a pretty amazing thing. I mean, the guide our guide was

  1201. like, I can't believe it hasn't rained.

1202. I mean, we always get rain during this time of year, at

1203. least at least a day where he's like, I can't believe it, you

1204. know, but God gave us that great weather and just, I mean, could

1205. not ask for better skies for the pictures and everything else and

1206. we just turned out beautifully. So anyway, I hope that's hope

1207. that gives you a little bit better picture of what, you

1208. know, I mean, how many times have you read the story of David

1209. and Goliath and probably pictured in your mind?

1210. What the valley looked like in? Everything else that's it.

1211. That's what it looked like, and pretty amazing.

1212. So if you want to go back and look at some of those pictures

1213. again, but yeah, I guess you can go back and watch the live

1214. stream or watch the watch the message again, if you wanted to,

1215. but I posted a lot of these pictures on my Facebook.

1216. So as soon as I'm out of Facebook jail or whatever they

1217. call it, as soon as I get my account back, then you should.

1218. I think you could still go on there and see it now but you can

1219. you can go back and maybe look at some of those pictures, a

1220. little closer, a little more closely and zoom in on them if

1221. you wanted to. And whatever else but hope

  1222. that's helped. Let's pray.

1223. And we'll be done father, we love you.

1224. Can we thank you for your goodness?

1225. I thank you for the way the Bible and archaeology, go

1226. hand-in-hand and how we can trust the word of God.

1227. Thank you so much for Reliable truth that we can stand on and I

1228. pray that you help us to always trust it and print it out as we

1229. go through these things that it would open up the Bible to us

1230. and help us to see it in a different light and see it in a

1231. different way maybe than we've seen it before and it helped us

1232. to study the Bible. Thank you for all that you do

1233. for us in Jesus. Name.

  1234. Amen.
