  1. Well, I want to talk to you today about King Jesus and the nature of his kingdom.

  2. You can say it this way, that this text, everything we just read is really all about that.

  3. It's how the king gathers his army.

  4. A king's actions reveal the nature of his kingdom.

  5. If you're taking notes, kids, you've got the handout.

  6. This is an important point.

  7. A king's actions reveal the nature of his kingdom.

  8. Think about it.

  9. That's the reason why presidential candidates will platform with promises about what they will do in their first 100 days of taking office.

  10. They know that their actions, those initial actions, are revealing what their kingdom or their rule is really all about.

  11. Well, who was the king of Israel?

  12. And what was he all about?

  13. Well, the Bible says that it was Herod.

  14. In Acts chapter 2, Herod is called the king of Israel.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  15. We're told that King Herod laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church.

  16. And he killed James, the brother of John.

  17. So the man who wrote this apostle, the apostle who wrote this letter here, this gospel of John, his brother, James, was killed by the king of Israel, King Herod.

  18. Well, what else was this king known for?

  19. King Herod the Great.

  20. You could say he built a replica of Rome itself.

  21. So you travel across the civilized world, the Roman Empire, and you come to Rome, and you were supposed to be stunned by the majesty of their architecture.

  22. Their aqueducts, their arches, you know, the way that they tried to intimidate their enemy with everything that was imposed upon them from what they built.

  23. And that was Rome.

  24. But in Judea, Herod the Great built a little replica.

  25. And it was in the city called Caesarea Philippi.

  26. And that little fortress, he had at his palace and it faced the Mediterranean Ocean, which would be like saltwater, you know, the Mediterranean Sea.

  27. They called it the Great Sea.

  28. And right there in his palace, he built an indoor swimming pool, larger than a swimming pool.

  29. And he had an aqueduct built just to bring fresh water to his palace.

  30. So as you came to visit him or you arrived on a ship, he wanted to stun you with his greatness.

  31. You might be thinking that would be a cool kingdom to belong to, the kingdom of Herod the Great.

  32. But what else was the kingdom of Herod the Great known for?

  33. Well, this was the same man, Herod, who left his one wife and his other wife started to poison his thoughts about her and her whole family.

  34. To the point that Herod the Great had her slain, along with her father, her relatives, including two of his own sons, killed because he was so suspicious.

  35. So you could say, by those actions, we know the nature of King Herod the Great's kingdom.

  36. He was a man who loved Rome.

  37. He was obsessed with Rome.

  38. He was also a man who only knew how to rule using terror and fear, the force of manipulation and control.

  39. The nature of the king's actions are revealing what their kingdom is about.

  40. And I believe here that what we just read, these initial movements of King Jesus.

  41. Remember, he's just been baptized into the water.

  42. And we read in Acts, in John chapter 1, he was anointed with the Holy Spirit.

    John 1 chapter mention

  43. And the Spirit remained on him.

  44. So when you hear this language of anointing, you know there's a special office being set up.

  45. Jesus is being inaugurated as the king.

  46. He's been anointed.

  47. You'd be thinking now, just like Samuel poured the oil over the head of David, that sunburned shepherd boy.

  48. And now he's going to be the king.

  49. Covenant, the office of King of Israel is anointed on him.

  50. Well, Jesus has been anointed.

  51. What is his kingdom all about?

  52. And every movement that he makes, I believe, is showing you what his kingdom is for.

  53. I think, too, that people might have thought of other references to this rule of God over his people.

  54. And the one that came to mind to me that was maybe unusual or striking was in Joshua chapter 5.

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  55. God is already fulfilling his promises.

  56. He brings his people, the second generation, into the promised land.

  57. And they now have to go fight the enemy that does not want them there, claiming their inheritance.

  58. And we're told in Joshua chapter 5 that as Joshua was praying and preparing now to lead the army of God and to do what they had been called to do,

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  59. Joshua lifted his eyes up and looked.

  60. And behold, a man was standing before him with his sword drawn in his hand.

  61. And he said, Are you for us or for our enemies?

  62. And this man said, Neither, but as commander of the Lord's army, I stand before you.

  63. Now, Jesus had not yet taken a body, but that was the son of God, the second person before he was incarnate, revealing himself.

  64. This is what he has been prepared to do all along.

  65. He will come and he will rule his people first in Israel to all the nations.

  66. So that's what will be in mind here, because look at verse 41 in our text today.

  67. In verse 41, we read that this wonderful declaration.

  68. We have found the Messiah.

  69. Messiah means exactly that, anointed one.

  70. We have found the one that God has anointed and prepared all along, which means the Christ.

  71. So when we say our Lord, Jesus Christ, every word is meaningful.

  72. He is our Lord.

  73. He rules over his new covenant people as the commander.

  74. And Christ means the anointed one, the same Savior that God has promised all along.

  75. Well, before I walk you through this text and show you these seven insights we get to the kingdom of God, I want us to appreciate and not take for granted the problem that we have.

  76. See, the promise, the promise of God is really attached to one covenant.

  77. And it's it begins with Eve and it goes all the way through with Abraham to Moses.

  78. But it gets super specific and clear with the covenant made with David and two pastors named Brown and Keel.

  79. They summarize the covenant God made with David this way.

  80. The Davidic king would make the people holy.

  81. This is what scripture teaches.

  82. The king would establish the true temple of God.

  83. The king would keep the laws of God for the people as their representative.

  84. And the king, a son of David, would subdue all Israel's enemies and would reign in God's name.

  85. That's what he would do.

  86. Psalm 134 says the king will usher God's people into Zion to worship God forever in glory.

  87. And Zion represents the mountain on which the kingly and the priestly office are combined.

  88. And the revelation of God is brought to the people.

  89. So Zion is that promise of a restored people of God that will be in his presence as his priests and kings, his army on earth.

  90. It's a promise for the church.

  91. But the problem with that promise is that it's been over 500 years.

  92. Ever since Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon destroyed the temple, the people have not had a man from the line of David on the throne of Jerusalem.

  93. So this is a big problem.

  94. You can understand why the people would be crying out in the words of Psalm 89.

  95. Lord, where is your steadfast love, which by your faithfulness you swore to David?

  96. Where is it?

  97. Well, the answer to this problem, it comes once again to Mary by the angel Gabriel.

  98. He says this in Luke 1.

  99. See, God sent an angel Gabriel himself to show all those promises, all that expectation for the Messiah, the one who would fulfill this covenant as the king of Israel.

  100. So they are now fulfilled in God who took on flesh, Jesus Christ.

  101. And the actions of the king reveal the nature of his kingdom.

  102. So if that's true, if Jesus is God's warrior, the commander of the Lord's army, taken on the body of a man to be the representative of all God's people,

  103. what do his early movements here in the rest of chapter one show us about the kingdom of God?

  104. Now, I'm going to walk us through seven observations.

  105. Ready?

  106. Here's number one.

  107. King Jesus cares about the heart of his people.

  108. King Jesus cares about the heart of his people.

  109. Look at verse 38.

  110. Well, we saw last week how John the baptizer, once again on the new day, beheld the name of God.

  111. And there were two disciples with him.

  112. Do you remember that?

  113. The two disciples.

  114. And those two disciples begin to follow Jesus.

  115. We're told that one of those disciples was who?

  116. Look at your Bible.

  117. Who was one of them that we're told?

  118. You can say it out loud.

  119. Who was it?

  120. Andrew.

  121. Yeah, one of them was Andrew.

  122. Now, I'm going to tell you who I think the second one was.

  123. Because we have some first person details given.

  124. Like they followed him and it was about the 10th hour.

  125. The 10th hour means you start counting when the sun comes up.

  126. It would be about 4 p.m.

  127. Well, who would know that?

  128. Because Luke was the historian, right?

  129. Luke had done this research as a historian, not as an eyewitness.

  130. My guess is that John, the apostle that wrote this gospel, was that second disciple.

  131. And you see how John the baptizer always wanted to make himself less.

  132. The apostle John, I'm the one who Jesus loved.

  133. You don't need to know more about me.

  134. You need to know about Christ.

  135. There's a second disciple there who had some first-hand details.

  136. That's a good probability it was John himself.

  137. Well, look at what he says in verse 38.

  138. As they start to follow Jesus, in verse 38, what are Jesus' first words to them?

  139. Jesus says, what are you seeking?

  140. See how with just a few words, King Jesus shows his care for the heart of his people.

  141. He didn't ask them a lot of other things.

  142. He didn't say, how well have you kept the law of God?

  143. He didn't ask them, how often have you been to church?

  144. You've done all these external things.

  145. Although true believers will want those things.

  146. They'll want to be with their king.

  147. He says in your heart, the part that no man can see, the part that you know, and God who knows all things, he sees it.

  148. What are you seeking?

  149. It reminds me of Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  150. Jesus said, don't be like those people who don't know the Lord.

  151. They only care about food and clothes.

  152. In other words, they only care about external things.

  153. He said this, Matthew 6, 32 and 33.

  154. You need to seek first, first and foremost, the kingdom of God and his righteousness.

  155. You know why?

  156. All these things will be added to you.

  157. The Father in heaven loves you and he knows you need all these things.

  158. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.

  159. King Jesus wants to know that of his people today as well.

  160. He wants to have you as part of his army.

  161. Search your own heart.

  162. What are you seeking?

  163. And he asked this as your king and your commander.

  164. Those who love anything more than Christ have no place in his kingdom.

  165. If you don't know what you're seeking, I want you to observe what these men did.

  166. See, what was their answer?

  167. Verse 38 and 39.

  168. They didn't have a great answer.

  169. We are seeking, you know, they didn't have anything profound to say.

  170. They just said, where are you staying?

  171. In other words, can we be around you?

  172. And maybe that's how you're today.

  173. You don't know your heart really.

  174. What am I seeking?

  175. And Jesus' words to you are, follow me.

  176. Come be with me.

  177. Stick around me.

  178. The King Jesus.

  179. God himself.

  180. Follow him in all those ordinary ways.

  181. Where are you staying?

  182. What are we doing when we get there?

  183. We'll spend time with you.

  184. If you're doing the dishes, we'll do the dishes with you.

  185. If you're going to go, you know, help.

  186. We'll do that with you.

  187. We want to be around you.

  188. We want to be your disciples.

  189. And as simple as gathering as God's people on a Sunday morning feels,

  190. doesn't it feel so ordinary?

  191. We carry some tubs in and, you know, we sing some songs

  192. and mess up some chords on the guitar.

  193. But it's so simple.

  194. But we want to be around King Jesus.

  195. We're seeking first his kingdom.

  196. Jesus cares about your heart today as well.

  197. And he gathers his army.

  198. So what else can we learn about the nature of his kingdom?

  199. See, we read in our narrative that Andrew, one of those two,

  200. brought along his brother.

  201. And once again, how ordinary it is.

  202. The way that King Jesus grows his army is so ordinary.

  203. In verse 40, we see that.

  204. Most likely, these men, the reason they're along the Jordan

  205. is probably because they came for those three feasts that we talked about.

  206. And now they're going back to Galilee where they're fishermen,

  207. they're simple men traveling back along the Jordan.

  208. And they had come trusting God to be their deliverer

  209. and to show themselves, show himself to them,

  210. show them his forgiveness.

  211. He came to show them something much greater than that.

  212. He came to show them what his kingdom is really about.

  213. The second thing I want to point out is this,

  214. that his kingdom only grows through direct encounter

  215. with King Jesus himself.

  216. See, Andrew was first a disciple of John the Baptizer.

  217. But look at verse 40 in your Bible.

  218. One of the two who heard John speak followed Jesus.

  219. And then in verse 42, what did Andrew do?

  220. Look at verse 42.

  221. We're told Andrew brought Peter to Jesus.

  222. He brought him to Jesus.

  223. So the king only grows his army as people are brought directly to him.

  224. As simple as this is,

  225. I think the applications are very hard.

  226. And I'm sure you have a loved one,

  227. a friend, a family member.

  228. You know what they need is for Christ to be the king of their life.

  229. And it's so tempting, isn't it,

  230. to try to bring that person to anything else,

  231. even our own children.

  232. But bring him to Christ alone.

  233. That's how he grows his kingdom.

  234. You need to know that you cannot save that loved one.

  235. What that person needs is to encounter the king for themselves.

  236. We're told in chapter 1, verse 17 of our chapter here,

  237. that grace and truth, that's what we all need.

  238. We need God's grace and the truth of the Bible.

  239. Look at verse 17.

  240. They come through who?

  241. Through Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the anointed one.

  242. No one else can bring God's grace and truth.

  243. That's the only way his kingdom grows,

  244. is through direct encounter with Christ himself.

  245. What we can do is pray.

  246. Because these men had been prepared.

  247. They had been drawn by the Spirit,

  248. by the Word of God, by the law,

  249. knowing they need forgiveness.

  250. And we can pray, we must pray,

  251. that God will bring more soldiers,

  252. more men and women, boys and girls,

  253. into his kingdom.

  254. His kingdom, listen to this,

  255. his kingdom cannot be manipulated by gimmicks

  256. or by the force of man.

  257. That's what King Herod is all about.

  258. That's not the way King Jesus grows his kingdom.

  259. His kingdom is the kingdom of light

  260. and it always overcomes the darkness.

  261. The true church grows when Christ builds his church

  262. and he promises, I will do that.

  263. I will build my church.

  264. Can we trust him to do that?

  265. Let's let Christ be extraordinary

  266. as we are obedient with the ordinary things

  267. he's called us to do so that he gets all the glory.

  268. The best we can ever do

  269. is to bring someone else to Jesus Christ himself

  270. because King Jesus is the one who gathers his army.

  271. What else do the king's actions in these early verses

  272. in chapter one reveal about the nature of his kingdom?

  273. Number three,

  274. we see that King Jesus knows his people.

  275. Look at verse 42 again.

  276. We're told in verse 42

  277. that Jesus looked at Peter

  278. and said,

  279. notice the next two words,

  280. you are,

  281. this is who you are.

  282. And what he calls him is,

  283. is Cephas,

  284. it means Petras,

  285. it means the rock.

  286. And we'll get insights much later

  287. in the passion of Christ

  288. that Peter was a rock,

  289. not because he was a man of great faith.

  290. In fact,

  291. he is the one who denied Christ.

  292. He failed God most publicly and miserably.

  293. But it was his profession

  294. that Jesus is the son of God,

  295. the Messiah,

  296. the anointed one.

  297. He is the Christ.

  298. That statement,

  299. that confession,

  300. which we've received

  301. and now we profess,

  302. that's the rock of the church.

  303. It's Christ himself.

  304. So that's what he calls Peter.

  305. And the application for us

  306. is that Jesus looked at Peter

  307. and said,

  308. you are.

  309. The only way the king can do that

  310. is if he knows who you are.

  311. And the king knows his army.

  312. He knows every single one

  313. of his soldiers.

  314. We need to never picture Jesus

  315. like that general,

  316. you know,

  317. sitting behind an office desk,

  318. looking at some figures

  319. on a paper or computer.

  320. King Jesus is like George Washington.

  321. He's marching with his boots on muddy.

  322. And he's in the midst of his people.

  323. He is among his sheep.

  324. He's the shepherd king.

  325. That's who King Jesus is.

  326. He knows you.

  327. And maybe you feel invisible

  328. at work or in your own family.

  329. You feel like

  330. no one really knows who you are.

  331. Remember,

  332. this is King Jesus

  333. who knows your heart

  334. and cares about you.

  335. And he knows

  336. how you will fail him in the future

  337. and he loves you still.

  338. He also knows

  339. how he will use you

  340. in your weakness

  341. to glorify him.

  342. How your kingdom will grow

  343. with one of your loved ones

  344. through you

  345. if you profess him

  346. and you confess

  347. Christ is your king.

  348. It reminds me of

  349. 1 Chronicles chapter 11

    1 Chronicles 11 chapter mention

  350. where David

  351. is driven out of the kingdom,

  352. the established kingdom in Judah.

  353. Remember Saul?

  354. He didn't want David around.

  355. David was a threat.

  356. So Saul was like King Herod.

  357. David is like Jesus.

  358. He's the one in the wilderness now.

  359. And the rejects

  360. from civilization

  361. are gathering around him.

  362. These simple men from Galilee

  363. that would be mocked,

  364. they would sound different,

  365. they wouldn't be as pure

  366. as how others would view them.

  367. Fishermen,

  368. uneducated.

  369. That's like David

  370. gathering his mighty men of valor.

  371. We're told in 1 Chronicles 11,

  372. David's mighty men

  373. gave him strong support

  374. in his kingdom

  375. and made him king

  376. according to the word of God.

  377. What a type we have of Christ.

  378. And if you have been drawn

  379. into the army of King Jesus,

  380. you are a mighty man

  381. of valor in his army.

  382. A mighty boy or girl or woman,

  383. you're raised up now as his army

  384. because King Jesus has gathered you.

  385. He knows you.

  386. And he has called you

  387. to follow him

  388. according to his word

  389. to be a great support

  390. for his kingdom on earth.

  391. What else can we learn

  392. of the kingdom of God

  393. from these verses?

  394. Number four,

  395. King Jesus is the one

  396. who finds his people.

  397. Look at verse 43.

  398. We're told that he found Philip.

  399. Jesus found him.

  400. In Luke 19,

  401. Jesus said,

  402. I came,

  403. you know why?

  404. I came was to seek

  405. and save the lost.

  406. That was his mission

  407. from heaven,

  408. leaving the Father's glory

  409. and stripping himself

  410. of the glory that he held

  411. as ruler of all.

  412. to take on the flesh,

  413. to seek and to save

  414. those who are lost.

  415. Psalm 103 says,

  416. The Lord has established

  417. his throne in the heavens

  418. and his kingdom rules over all.

  419. So bless the Lord,

  420. O you his angels,

  421. you mighty ones

  422. who do his word,

  423. obeying the voice of the Lord.

  424. And he has come now

  425. with the angels of God behind him

  426. and the Holy Spirit

  427. preparing the way,

  428. drawing one.

  429. He will find you.

  430. If you've walked away from him

  431. or you're praying for someone

  432. who has walked far away from him,

  433. that little lamb

  434. off the green pastures,

  435. he will find them.

  436. That's who he is.

  437. I want you to turn to Ezekiel 37

  438. to see the nature of his kingdom.

  439. Ezekiel chapter 37.

    Ezekiel 37 chapter mention

  440. This is one of our

  441. messianic prophecies.

  442. So it's a prophecy

  443. about the covenant

  444. God made with David.

  445. And for context,

  446. briefly,

  447. you need to know

  448. that Ezekiel was a prophet of God

  449. during the time of exile.

  450. He wasn't even writing

  451. from Jerusalem.

  452. He's writing from Babylon.

  453. He's among those

  454. who have been vanished

  455. from the land.

  456. Ezekiel chapter 37.

    Ezekiel 37 chapter mention

  457. Let's look at verses 23 and 24.

  458. So even as God's people

  459. have received his punishment,

  460. he gives them this gracious promise.

  461. He says,

  462. it's Ezekiel 37, 23 and 24.

  463. The Lord says,

  464. I will save them

  465. from all the backslidings

  466. in which they have sinned.

  467. I will cleanse them

  468. and they shall be my people

  469. and I shall be their God.

  470. Now look at verse 24.

  471. Who will do this?

  472. Who will go find those

  473. who are lost

  474. who have backslidden

  475. and restore them

  476. to being in the kingdom?

  477. Verse 24 says,

  478. My servant David

  479. shall be king over them.

  480. Now David is long dead.

  481. And we're in that period

  482. where the seed of David

  483. is no longer

  484. on the throne of Israel anymore.

  485. But the promise remains.

  486. You see how significant this is?

  487. Verse 24.

  488. They shall all have one shepherd.

  489. They shall walk in my rules

  490. and be careful

  491. to obey my statutes.

  492. My servant

  493. shall be their prince

  494. forever.

  495. Jesus Christ

  496. is the chief shepherd

  497. of your soul.

  498. He will not let

  499. one of his lambs

  500. that he knows

  501. remain lost.

  502. Now look at verse 43

  503. back in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  504. Gospel of John chapter 1 again.

    John 1 chapter mention

  505. Look at verse 43.

  506. The next day,

  507. Jesus decided to go

  508. to Galilee.

  509. See, according to God's providence,

  510. Christ is on the move.

  511. Jesus decided to go to Galilee

  512. and the next words

  513. is that he found Philip.

  514. And notice his command

  515. when he finds

  516. one of his lambs.

  517. Follow me.

  518. Now a disciple

  519. would follow the rabbi.

  520. Sometimes they would just

  521. walk behind them

  522. like a line

  523. to show

  524. we are seeking to

  525. imitate the movements

  526. of our rabbi.

  527. And you remember

  528. John the baptizer said,

  529. I'm not even worthy

  530. to untie his sandals.

  531. Well, it was the job

  532. of a disciple

  533. to untie the sandals

  534. of their rabbi.

  535. And Jesus says

  536. to Philip,

  537. follow me.

  538. Become my disciple.

  539. Become one

  540. who will follow me.

  541. And let no task

  542. that I ask of you

  543. be too lowly.

  544. In verse 43,

  545. Jesus found Philip.

  546. And then Philip,

  547. following Jesus,

  548. spreads the word.

  549. He says to Nathanael,

  550. come and see.

  551. He learned

  552. from John the baptizer.

  553. If you behold

  554. the Lamb of God,

  555. it's going to bubble up

  556. out of you.

  557. Like John the baptizer said,

  558. behold the Lamb of God.

  559. Well, notice what

  560. Philip now does next.

  561. Same thing Andrew did.

  562. You need to come

  563. and see him for yourself.

  564. You need to follow

  565. this King.

  566. My prayer today

  567. is that you will believe

  568. that by the life,

  569. death,

  570. and resurrection

  571. of Jesus,

  572. he finds his people.

  573. The work of finding

  574. sinners that are lost

  575. is accomplished already.

  576. Now the application

  577. of that comes

  578. through the Holy Spirit,

  579. through his church,

  580. and through his word.

  581. And we get to be

  582. part of that.

  583. Jesus finds his people.

  584. This should give us

  585. so much confidence

  586. for evangelism.

  587. This should give us

  588. so much hope

  589. for someone who we know,

  590. our own persuasion,

  591. our own work,

  592. we cannot convince anyone

  593. or change any heart.

  594. Karl Marx thought

  595. the hope of the civilization

  596. was in fixing the economy.

  597. Freud thought it was

  598. in fixing psychology.

  599. I think many today

  600. have made an idol

  601. of education.

  602. They think education

  603. can fix the world's problems.

  604. Jesus finds his people.

  605. The only hope of the world

  606. is in Christ,

  607. the gospel of Jesus

  608. through his church.

  609. We get to be part of that.

  610. Number five,

  611. what else do we see now

  612. from the movements

  613. of King Jesus?

  614. We see that the kingdom

  615. of God

  616. is recognized

  617. by ordinary people

  618. prepared by God.

  619. God prepares

  620. ordinary people

  621. and when he reveals himself,

  622. they recognize him.

  623. They know this is true.

  624. It's that simple.

  625. He prepares people.

  626. So here we have

  627. fishermen,

  628. Galileans,

  629. uneducated men.

  630. They've been flunked out

  631. of traditional

  632. rabbinical school.

  633. But we told

  634. in verse 45,

  635. look there,

  636. verse 45,

  637. John 1, 45,

  638. they knew enough.

  639. They had been prepared

  640. by the word of God.

  641. In verse 45,

  642. they recognized

  643. this must be the one

  644. whom Moses and the law

  645. and also the prophets

  646. wrote about.

  647. The Lord

  648. had revealed himself

  649. to men

  650. who had been prepared

  651. as ordinary

  652. as they were.

  653. And that's what

  654. the church is.

  655. It's ordinary people.

  656. Saved sinners.

  657. That's all we are

  658. and ever will be.

  659. But we're pronounced

  660. saints now.

  661. We're priests

  662. and kings

  663. in his kingdom.

  664. This reminds me again

  665. of Gideon now

  666. in Judges chapter 6.

    Judges 6 chapter mention

  667. Remember first,

  668. they gathered an army

  669. under Gideon.

  670. 22,000 warriors.

  671. God wasn't looking

  672. for the might of men.

  673. He said,

  674. I need 300

  675. who are watchful.

  676. They're watching

  677. for my kingdom to come

  678. and through whom

  679. I will be glorified.

  680. They're trusting in me.

  681. What else do the king's actions

  682. reveal about the nature

  683. of his kingdom?

  684. Number six,

  685. King Jesus

  686. sees you.

  687. This brings us

  688. to the last

  689. of the men

  690. who are called

  691. to this passage.

  692. Look at verse 48.

  693. King Jesus

  694. sees Nathanael.

  695. In verse 48,

  696. we're told,

  697. before your friend

  698. brought you

  699. to me,

  700. says Jesus,

  701. I saw you.

  702. Now,

  703. who was this man,

  704. Nathanael?

  705. The other

  706. gospels,

  707. Matthew,

  708. Mark,

  709. and Luke,

  710. they call him

  711. Bartholomew.

  712. I believe it's the same man.

  713. He's always associated

  714. with Philip.

  715. Notice it was Philip

  716. who brought him.

  717. So they're close associates.

  718. Most likely,

  719. like,

  720. Bar means son.

  721. So Bartholomew,

  722. it probably means

  723. Nathanael was what

  724. they commonly called him,

  725. but he was the son

  726. of Thalomew.

  727. So Bartholomew

  728. would be his more

  729. formal name.

  730. And John calls him.

  731. I'm sorry,

  732. John calls him Nathanael,

  733. but Jesus was the one

  734. who said,

  735. I saw you.

  736. You're under that tree,

  737. but I saw who you are.

  738. The encouragement

  739. I have for you here

  740. is this.

  741. We're told that Jesus

  742. is the son of God.

  743. He is the light

  744. of life.

  745. And in him,

  746. there is no darkness

  747. at all.

  748. This should both

  749. convict us

  750. and encourage us.

  751. If you feel invisible,

  752. and you feel

  753. like you are surrounded

  754. by so much darkness,

  755. you have no way

  756. of getting out

  757. on your own.

  758. Jesus,

  759. the light of God,

  760. sees you.

  761. And if the beam

  762. of light

  763. from God himself

  764. brings the light

  765. of God

  766. into your life,

  767. and I pray

  768. that he'll do that

  769. in every corner

  770. of your heart

  771. and my heart,

  772. there's no room

  773. for darkness.

  774. When the ray

  775. of light comes in,

  776. all the darkness

  777. flees from Christ.

  778. So when Christ

  779. sees you,

  780. he sees you

  781. with the light

  782. of God's holiness.

  783. And how could you

  784. not respond

  785. as one who wants

  786. to walk

  787. in the light

  788. of God?

  789. Jesus sees

  790. his soldiers.

  791. He sees everyone

  792. who he calls

  793. into his army.

  794. And he brings

  795. them life

  796. out of the shadows

  797. in his kingdom

  798. of light.

  799. Well, number seven,

  800. King Jesus

  801. is the only one

  802. who bridges

  803. earth and heaven.

  804. He brings heaven

  805. to earth,

  806. and he brings men

  807. from earth

  808. to the kingdom

  809. of God

  810. in heaven.

  811. Look at verse 51.

  812. Nathaniel was

  813. impressed that

  814. Jesus saw him

  815. and knew this

  816. inside.

  817. Jesus says,

  818. don't be impressed

  819. by that.

  820. In verse 51,

  821. truly, truly,

  822. I say to you,

  823. you will see

  824. heaven opened.

  825. Let me explain

  826. that phrase.

  827. Truly, truly,

  828. in all the other

  829. gospels, it's usually

  830. just given one time.

  831. Truly, I say to you,

  832. in the gospel of John,

  833. remember, it's written

  834. much later than

  835. all the other gospels.

  836. He brings it twice,

  837. almost every time.

  838. Truly, truly.

  839. In other words,

  840. you all have read

  841. the gospels.

  842. You've read Matthew,

  843. Mark, and Luke.

  844. This is what it felt

  845. like to hear Christ

  846. himself say that.

  847. And the word truly,

  848. it could mean amen.

  849. In other words,

  850. the weight of God's glory

  851. before God himself,

  852. I tell you this,

  853. you will see

  854. heaven opened.

  855. And that phrase,

  856. heaven opened,

  857. is an expression

  858. for a great revelation.

  859. Heaven is the

  860. spiritual realm.

  861. It's where God

  862. in his spirit

  863. dwells and rules

  864. and reigns.

  865. So he says,

  866. truly, truly,

  867. I say to you,

  868. and even though he

  869. was dealing with

  870. Nathanael,

  871. he's got disciples

  872. surrounding him,

  873. and he switches

  874. the tense.

  875. He says,

  876. I say to you,

  877. that's in the plural,

  878. and the application

  879. for us is this,

  880. Jesus is revealing

  881. to you,

  882. all of you,

  883. who are his disciples,

  884. with the truth

  885. of heaven itself,

  886. truly, truly.

  887. Notice his next words.

  888. What will it be

  889. that they will see?

  890. He's quoting

  891. from Genesis 28.

  892. And I'm going to read

  893. that so you can see

  894. how similar

  895. the quotation

  896. from Christ is.

  897. Genesis 28.

  898. He dreamed,

  899. this is Jacob dreamed,

  900. and behold,

  901. there was a ladder

  902. set up on earth

  903. that's actually

  904. resting on earth.

  905. Resting is ruling.

  906. To rest is to rule.

  907. So a ladder

  908. that rules on earth

  909. is set up,

  910. and the top of it

  911. reaches to heaven,

  912. and behold,

  913. the angels of God

  914. were ascending,

  915. going up,

  916. and descending,

  917. going down on it.

  918. So in Genesis,

  919. they're going down

  920. on this ladder,

  921. and Jacob doesn't have

  922. the full revelation.

  923. Who is that ladder,

  924. that stairway,

  925. this bridge

  926. between heaven and earth?

  927. And what does Jesus say

  928. the ladder is?

  929. It is the Son of Man.

  930. Well, in the same chapter,

  931. He is the Son of God.

  932. Now we see

  933. He is God become man.

  934. The second Adam,

  935. the representative.

  936. The King's actions

  937. reveal that Christ Himself

  938. would lay down His life.

  939. What's the nature

  940. of His kingdom?

  941. His kingdom is one

  942. where the King

  943. lays down His life

  944. for His soldiers.

  945. He brings heaven

  946. to them.

  947. And the angels

  948. that are ascending

  949. and descending

  950. will ascending

  951. angels means messengers.

  952. And yes,

  953. angels flooded to earth

  954. at the time of Christ

  955. to reveal the truth

  956. about Him,

  957. to confirm

  958. Jesus is the God,

  959. the Messiah.

  960. And the angels

  961. are ministering

  962. even now

  963. among the church.

  964. But I think the angels

  965. could also be

  966. what Jacob pictured

  967. and what Christ

  968. is explaining.

  969. Angel means messenger

  970. or delegate

  971. or ambassador.

  972. Who else is called

  973. an ambassador?

  974. Who else are the delegates

  975. of the kingdom of Jesus?

  976. It's His people.

  977. And when Christ comes

  978. to judge the living

  979. and the dead,

  980. we believe in the bodily

  981. resurrection of the saints.

  982. So all those

  983. who are now in Christ,

  984. they will be ascending with Him.

  985. And when He comes

  986. to set up His eternal kingdom

  987. to rule over all earth

  988. and heaven,

  989. the new heavens,

  990. the new earth,

  991. the army of heaven

  992. would descend with Him.

  993. What a glorious vision.

  994. There's no path

  995. between sin

  996. and the flesh

  997. and death on earth

  998. and the holiness

  999. of God in heaven

  1000. except on Jesus Christ.

  1001. That's what we confess.

1002. So in those seven observations,

1003. we see how King Jesus

  1004. gathers His army.

  1005. my argument to you

1006. is that He is not done

  1007. gathering His army.

  1008. He gathers His army

  1009. still today.

  1010. Are you one

  1011. who He has prepared

  1012. and who can declare

1013. you are the Son of God?

1014. You are the promised King

  1015. from all God's Word,

  1016. from all the Scripture.

1017. And I want to take you

  1018. to Psalm 110

  1019. because I want you

  1020. to evaluate

1021. how do you view Christ

  1022. in light of this.

  1023. So please turn

  1024. to Psalm 110.

  1025. Verse 1,

  1026. Psalm 10 says,

1027. The Lord says to my Lord,

1028. sit at my right hand

  1029. until I make

  1030. your enemies

  1031. a footstool.

  1032. So the Lord says

  1033. to my Lord,

  1034. that's a little confusing,

  1035. isn't it?

  1036. The Lord,

  1037. Father in heaven,

  1038. creator of earth,

  1039. says to the psalmists,

  1040. Lord,

  1041. but hold on,

1042. we see at the top,

1043. this is a Psalm of David.

  1044. There's no one

  1045. above the King.

  1046. Who is the Lord

  1047. of the King?

1048. So we have to understand

  1049. in light of what

  1050. God has revealed,

  1051. David himself said,

  1052. I have a Lord

1053. who is the covenant Lord.

  1054. He brings God's grace

  1055. to earth.

  1056. And who was it

1057. that said to my Lord?

  1058. The Father says

  1059. to the Son,

  1060. Son,

1061. sit at my right hand

  1062. until I have made

  1063. my enemies

  1064. your footstool.

  1065. That's where Christ

  1066. sits right now,

  1067. at the right hand

  1068. of the Father.

  1069. Who are the enemies

  1070. of Christ?

  1071. Well, today,

  1072. the enemies of Christ,

  1073. we're told,

  1074. we don't fight

  1075. against flesh and blood,

  1076. but against the powers

  1077. of darkness,

  1078. these principalities

  1079. of the spiritual realm.

  1080. And we know

1081. even in our own heart,

  1082. we fight against sin,

  1083. indwelling sin,

  1084. like Romans 7.

  1085. We fight against Satan.

  1086. Although his head

  1087. is crushed,

  1088. he's still permitted

  1089. to prowl around

  1090. like a roaring lion,

1091. seeking who he can devour,

  1092. because that's a mean

  1093. God is using

1094. to draw us into his kingdom

  1095. and to prepare us

  1096. for heaven.

  1097. And so he fights

  1098. against sin,

  1099. Satan,

  1100. and the devil.

  1101. Now, death,

  1102. if you're in Christ,

  1103. death has been destroyed.

  1104. There's no longer

  1105. a sting of death.

1106. But these are the enemies

  1107. of God

  1108. that are being brought

  1109. under his rule

  1110. until he returns

  1111. in glory.

1112. Now, look at verse 2,

  1113. Psalm 110, verse 2.

    Psalms 110:2

  1114. The Lord sends forth

  1115. from Zion

  1116. your mighty scepter.

  1117. Rule in the midst

  1118. of your enemies.

  1119. The Father sent forth

  1120. Jesus Christ

  1121. as his sword

  1122. or his scepter,

  1123. as the one

  1124. who will go out

  1125. bringing the rule

  1126. of God on earth.

  1127. In verse 3,

1128. what will be the nature

  1129. of his army

  1130. as he rules them?

  1131. Verse 3,

  1132. your people

  1133. will offer themselves

  1134. freely

  1135. on the day

  1136. of your power

  1137. in holy garments.

  1138. See,

  1139. the people of God

  1140. stand before God

  1141. having been declared

  1142. righteous.

  1143. They're dressed

  1144. in the righteousness

  1145. of Christ alone.

  1146. And how is it

  1147. that they offer

  1148. themselves back

1149. to him as he rules

  1150. from heaven?

  1151. They offer themselves

  1152. freely.

1153. The nature of his kingdom

  1154. is that everyone

1155. in the army of King Jesus

  1156. is a volunteer.

  1157. Not because they are

  1158. more holy or anything,

  1159. it's because how could

1160. you not want to follow

  1161. Jesus?

  1162. Just like the disciples.

  1163. They beheld him

  1164. and they followed him.

1165. And I want to just

  1166. share with you two

  1167. willing warriors,

  1168. two volunteer soldiers

  1169. who freely gave

  1170. themselves to Christ.

  1171. Both of them

1172. are from our text today.

  1173. The first one

  1174. is Andrew.

  1175. John Fox,

  1176. a Puritan historian

  1177. and pastor,

  1178. he put together

  1179. a book telling

  1180. the stories of martyrs.

  1181. And in this book,

  1182. he said that Andrew,

  1183. this apostle,

  1184. he went on

  1185. to be a missionary

  1186. in Asia.

  1187. And he was later

  1188. arrested and brought

1189. to the city of Petrus,

  1190. which is an amazing

  1191. city in Greece,

  1192. carved into stone.

  1193. And we're told

  1194. that there,

  1195. Andrew was tied

  1196. to a cross

1197. that was in the shape

  1198. of an X.

  1199. So his legs

  1200. and his arms

  1201. would have been

  1202. stretched out like that,

  1203. tied there.

  1204. And Andrew

  1205. was probably reflecting

  1206. on the glorious gospel,

  1207. what it was

  1208. to follow Christ,

  1209. to tell others

  1210. we found God's anointed

  1211. one, the king,

  1212. to join his army.

  1213. In Matthew 12,

  1214. Jesus said,

1215. whoever is not with me

  1216. is against me,

  1217. and whoever does not

  1218. gather with me

  1219. scatters.

  1220. So Andrew was

  1221. full of joy

  1222. to go and take

  1223. the gospel

  1224. to a different continent.

  1225. And the tradition

  1226. of the church

  1227. in Fox's book

  1228. says that Andrew,

  1229. from that position,

  1230. was a very slow

  1231. and torturous death.

  1232. he preached

  1233. the gospel of Jesus,

  1234. gathering more

  1235. by proclaiming Christ

  1236. for three days.

  1237. That's a willing soldier.

  1238. That's someone

  1239. who belongs

  1240. to the army

  1241. of King Jesus

  1242. has prophesied

  1243. in Psalm 110.

  1244. And the second

  1245. willing warrior

1246. I want to tell you about

  1247. is Nathaniel,

  1248. Bartholomew.

  1249. Fox says that

  1250. he went on

  1251. to proclaim Christ

  1252. to all who would

  1253. believe in India.

  1254. So the great

  1255. continent of India

  1256. that even today

  1257. has so many

  1258. dialects and

  1259. languages that

  1260. don't have the Bible

  1261. complete yet.

  1262. And he made it

  1263. his lifelong project

  1264. to translate

  1265. the gospel of Matthew

  1266. to the people

  1267. of India

  1268. where he was serving.

  1269. One of the passages

  1270. he would have translated

  1271. would have been

  1272. Matthew chapter 10.

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  1273. It says this,

  1274. whoever denies me

  1275. before men,

  1276. this is Christ speaking,

  1277. I also will deny

  1278. before my Father

  1279. who is in heaven.

  1280. Do not think

  1281. that I have come

  1282. to bring peace

  1283. to earth.

  1284. I have not come

  1285. to bring peace

  1286. but a sword.

  1287. And according

  1288. to John Fox

  1289. in church history,

  1290. this apostle

  1291. Nathaniel

  1292. was flayed.

  1293. To be flayed,

  1294. little children

  1295. left the room,

  1296. it means that

  1297. they skinned you

  1298. alive.

  1299. They took a knife

  1300. and cut your skin

  1301. off while you're

  1302. still living.

  1303. And Nathaniel

  1304. would not deny

  1305. Christ.

  1306. Now I share this

  1307. with those not

  1308. so you think

  1309. these men

  1310. were special

  1311. or that they were

  1312. so much holier

  1313. or better.

  1314. I share this

  1315. with you because

  1316. this shows

  1317. that the work

  1318. of the Holy Spirit

  1319. to give them

  1320. a new heart,

  1321. to cause them

  1322. to believe Jesus

  1323. and then to follow

  1324. him in the way

  1325. of his kingdom

  1326. speaks a loud

  1327. gospel to the

  1328. whole world

  1329. whoever will have

  1330. ears to hear.

  1331. Zephaniah 3.15

  1332. says,

  1333. The King of Israel,

  1334. the Lord,

  1335. is in your midst.

  1336. And Jesus was

  1337. in their midst

  1338. even as they were

  1339. being martyred

  1340. for his kingdom.

  1341. They did not

  1342. leave them alone.

  1343. He was with them.

  1344. He says,

  1345. You shall never

  1346. again fear evil

  1347. on the day

  1348. of the Lord.

  1349. The Lord your God

  1350. is in your midst,

  1351. a mighty one

  1352. who will save.

  1353. He will rejoice

  1354. over you

  1355. with gladness

  1356. and he will

  1357. quiet you

  1358. by his love.

  1359. He will exult

  1360. over you

  1361. with loud singing.

  1362. I just need

  1363. to probably

  1364. share with you

  1365. what you might

  1366. be wrestling with.

  1367. So you're saying

  1368. Jesus rules

  1369. from heaven

  1370. and he's the

  1371. King of kings

  1372. and Lord of lords

  1373. ruling.

  1374. Yet you just

  1375. told us these

  1376. examples of how

  1377. men in his army

  1378. are being destroyed

  1379. and torturously

  1380. abused.

  1381. And we know

  1382. our brothers and

  1383. sisters around

  1384. the world

  1385. under persecution,

  1386. I think more

  1387. and more

  1388. among the church

  1389. in America

  1390. we will face

  1391. that same thing.

  1392. How can you say

  1393. Jesus is the King

  1394. when that's all

  1395. going on

  1396. in his kingdom?

  1397. John Calvin

  1398. citing Augustine

  1399. and his institutes

  1400. was so helpful

  1401. to me on this

  1402. question.

  1403. Here's the quote.

  1404. Should God

  1405. immediately

  1406. punish all evil

  1407. in the world?

  1408. He could do that.

1409. But should he do that?

  1410. It would be thought

  1411. of him

  1412. that he has left

  1413. nothing for his

  1414. final day of judgment.

  1415. There is a day

  1416. coming.

  1417. There is a day.

1418. The day of the Lord

  1419. is coming.

  1420. And he will bring

  1421. the final judgment.

  1422. Praise him for being

  1423. so patient with me

  1424. and with you

  1425. and with this world.

  1426. Now, here's the rest

  1427. of the quote.

  1428. On the other hand,

  1429. if God did not

  1430. restrain

  1431. and judge

  1432. some evil

  1433. in the world,

  1434. then it would be

  1435. thought of him

  1436. that he does not

  1437. hate any wickedness

  1438. or exert any

  1439. sovereignty

  1440. or providence

  1441. over his creation,

  1442. which is also

  1443. not true.

  1444. Our Lord rules

  1445. and he preserves

  1446. his broken world

  1447. until his final day.

1448. We long for that day

  1449. when every knee

  1450. will bow

  1451. and every tongue

  1452. will confess

  1453. that Jesus Christ

  1454. is Lord

  1455. to the glory

  1456. of God

  1457. the Father.

  1458. Let's pray

  1459. from Psalm

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  1460. chapter 2.

  1461. Father,

  1462. you promised

  1463. that you have

  1464. set your King

  1465. Jesus on Zion,

  1466. your holy hill.

  1467. He rules

  1468. from heaven.

  1469. We believe

  1470. and confess

  1471. that Christ reigns

  1472. today.

  1473. He has gathered

  1474. an army,

  1475. his church around him,

  1476. and he is still

  1477. on the move

  1478. gathering men

  1479. and women,

  1480. young and old,

  1481. still today.

  1482. Lord,

  1483. you have promised

  1484. to make the nations

  1485. his heritage

  1486. and the ends

  1487. of the earth

  1488. his possession.

  1489. Please do this,

  1490. Father.

  1491. Please do this

  1492. for your glory

  1493. through your church,

  1494. by your word,

1495. so that you will be

  1496. exalted among the nations.

  1497. We ask

  1498. in your name.

  1499. Amen.
