  1. 3, and we like to remain standing as we hear the Word of God, the sermon text.

  2. That's what the people of God did in the days of Ezra and Nehemiah, as these sojourners

  3. were brought back to worship and the kingdom was prefigured, it was typified for what we

  4. now enjoy in Jesus Christ.

  5. So we hear this Word as the Word of our King Jesus.

  6. Today's sermon text is John chapter 3, verses 1 through 12.

    John 3:1–12

  7. I'm going to read this, and then at the end I will say, this is the Word of God, and we

  8. will respond, thanks be to God.

  9. So hear now the inspired, inerrant, and infallible Word of God.

  10. Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

  11. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher

  12. come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.

  13. Jesus answered him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see

  14. the kingdom of God.

  15. Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old?

  16. Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?

  17. Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit,

  18. he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  19. That which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit.

  20. Do not marvel that I said to you, you must be born again.

  21. The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes

  22. from or where it goes.

  23. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.

  24. Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be?

  25. Jesus answered him, You are the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

  26. Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and bear witness to what we have seen,

  27. but you do not receive our testimony.

  28. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you

  29. heavenly things?

  30. This is the Word of God.

  31. Thanks be to God.

  32. You may be seated.

  33. Let's pray.

  34. Oh Lord, you formed the Spirit of man within him.

  35. You made his life.

  36. The Spirit of God made us.

  37. And it's the breath of the Almighty that gives life.

  38. You put wisdom in the innermost being, and you are the one who gives understanding to the mind of man.

  39. We ask now that once again, by the power of your Holy Spirit, you will breathe spiritual life to all who have an ear to hear.

  40. Speak, Lord, that your Word will not return in void.

  41. We pray for the glory of King Jesus and for the coming of his kingdom through his church.

  42. Amen.

  43. Amen.

  44. I have a very simple message for you today.

  45. I believe this is the message Jesus had, and it's this.

  46. It's the title of our sermon.

  47. Your salvation is an act of God.

  48. Your salvation is an act of God.

  49. In 1987, a weather forecaster in the United Kingdom named Michael Fish, he told viewers in the midday broadcast to ignore talk of a hurricane approaching southern England, saying it would become merely very windy that day.

  50. As you might be able to imagine, those who listened to this man were left speechless by what actually happened.

  51. A severe storm felled 15 million trees.

  52. It caused damage surpassing $2.3 billion.

  53. Tragically, 20 people were killed because they were unprepared and then unable to save themselves.

  54. It was too late for them to find a safe shelter by the time the storm hit.

  55. Such a hurricane is what insurance companies call acts of God.

  56. They're so massive, so much mightier than human power, so majestically sovereign, and mysteriously unpredictable.

  57. No one in their right mind would claim credit for a hurricane or a tornado or a tsunami or a typhoon.

  58. Those are acts of God, aren't they?

  59. And Jesus says the wind blows where it wishes.

  60. No one sees where it's coming or where it's going.

  61. Similarly, when a baby is born, the toughest former veteran grandpa, he will just melt into a puddle and he will say,

  62. this is a miracle, this little baby.

  63. What a miracle.

  64. The fact that a new life can take place and be formed inside the womb of a mommy,

  65. and then a tiny new little person comes forth, comes out of there,

  66. that's an even mightier act, isn't it?

  67. It's the same God who controls the wind.

  68. His providence is over all his creation.

  69. That same God breathed life into Adam and Eve, his image bearers,

  70. and it's that same God alone who has the power to breathe new life into a dead soul.

  71. So that's what Jesus is telling Nicodemus.

  72. Greater than these acts of God in nature, even greater than a physical birth,

  73. is the phenomenon that God alone can do to bring forth new life.

  74. The new birth.

  75. And that's the one doctrine that's in focus in these first 12 verses of chapter 3.

  76. It's what the church has called new birth, which also can be worded this way,

  77. regeneration, regeneration.

  78. So that's our doctrine in view today.

  79. Greater than the mightiest storm, greater than the birth of your most precious baby,

  80. is God's act in bringing forth spiritual life.

  81. An act of God that takes place inside the person,

  82. and it happens mysteriously, like the movement of the wind.

  83. Look at verse 5.

  84. Jesus tells Nicodemus in verse 5,

  85. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit,

  86. he cannot, physically, spiritually cannot,

  87. he's incapable of entering the kingdom of God.

  88. So what I pray that you'll be able to hear today is just that.

  89. You cannot enter the kingdom of God unless you are born of the Spirit.

  90. You cannot enjoy eternal life with God unless you are given new life by God's Holy Spirit.

  91. You are unable to choose salvation from sin by the power of your own will.

  92. That's what Jesus preaches, unless you are first regenerated by the Spirit of God,

  93. sent from heaven to apply the work of Christ to your soul.

  94. So about three times, I'm going to say the title of the sermon,

  95. and I want you to cry back with as much energy as this gospel is true for you.

  96. Your response is simply this,

  97. All glory be to God.

  98. Let's practice it one time.

  99. I'm going to say the title of the sermon, and you say it back.

  100. Ready?

  101. Your salvation is an act of God.

  102. All glory be to God.

  103. Now be ready.

  104. Listen for that title, and you say that every time.

  105. Well, I want to show this to you from this passage in two points.

  106. The first point is this,

  107. Why new birth is necessary.

  108. And the second point is,

  109. What is new birth?

  110. So what is new birth?

  111. Why is it necessary?

  112. Is that clear?

  113. That's where we're going.

  114. Okay.

  115. So why new birth is necessary?

  116. I want to give you a couple reasons.

  117. Number one,

  118. because knowing about God,

  119. knowing of God,

  120. is not enough.

  121. As simple as that sounds,

  122. there's no one who knew more about God

  123. at this time than Nicodemus.

  124. And it was not enough.

  125. Look at verse one.

  126. We're told he was a man of the Pharisees,

  127. a ruler of the Jews.

  128. So Nicodemus was a ruler of the Jews,

  129. a member of the Sanhedrin.

  130. The Sanhedrin was made up of about 70 representatives,

  131. very, very powerful.

  132. And he was also a Pharisee.

  133. And the Pharisees were coming from within this religious establishment,

  134. but they had a high view of God's word,

  135. and they wanted to reform it from within.

  136. They wanted to try to purify the established religion.

  137. There were probably about 2,000 Pharisees scattered throughout all of Israel.

  138. And only, you know,

  139. representative maybe 40 or 50 got to be on the Sanhedrin.

  140. And that's who Nicodemus was among.

  141. Steve Lawson, another pastor,

  142. said the Sanhedrin, in our mind,

  143. it would be like combining the Supreme Court,

  144. all the power that they have in this land,

  145. with Congress.

  146. That's like how powerful the Sanhedrin would have been.

  147. But it was not enough for Nicodemus to be from the Sanhedrin,

  148. a ruler of the Jews.

  149. And it wasn't enough for him to be a Pharisee,

  150. because the Pharisees,

  151. they would want to take God's word so highly

  152. that they started to add on extra cautions.

  153. So they wanted to put guards around their own life

  154. that they would never break God's law.

  155. They had a high view of God,

  156. high view of his word and his law.

  157. And that was not enough to save himself.

  158. It's also not enough to know that a heavenly kingdom exists.

  159. Look at verse 3.

  160. Nicodemus begins this dialogue at night in the dark,

  161. most likely coming to flatter Jesus,

  162. to try to establish maybe we can work together here.

  163. I'm representing Sanhedrin.

  164. We see that you've got some signs from God.

  165. Let's work together.

  166. And Jesus does not have a conversation with Nicodemus' words.

  167. Jesus has a conversation with Nicodemus' inner man,

  168. with his soul.

  169. And let's just pause about that for a moment.

  170. When you're praying,

  171. you're having a dialogue with God.

  172. And you can turn to the Psalms

  173. and let the Psalms help give words

  174. to what's in your inner man, your soul,

  175. because God knows your heart.

  176. And yes, he hears your words,

  177. but he's going to speak truth to you,

  178. to your soul.

  179. So don't think that with our words,

  180. we can ever deceive God.

  181. He sees, he knows what's in the heart of man.

  182. Remember, John's made this point.

  183. And Jesus tells him,

  184. you cannot see the kingdom of God

  185. unless you're born again.

  186. Verse 3.

  187. So Nicodemus,

  188. at least in the inner man,

  189. he knew there is a heavenly kingdom.

  190. There is a spiritual realm.

  191. And he's trying his best

  192. to live that out in his life.

  193. Live my life now

  194. in light of a future heaven.

  195. And that's not enough

  196. to save himself.

  197. One biblical scholar,

  198. William Hendrickson,

  199. said,

  200. Pharisees,

  201. it means separatists.

  202. And they began to appear

  203. about 100 years before Christ.

  204. And they were right

  205. on many points of doctrine.

  206. For example,

  207. they did believe

  208. that God had a divine decree.

  209. He ruled and governed

  210. over the entire earth.

  211. They also believed

  212. that men and women in our life,

  213. we will be morally accountable

  214. to God, our creator.

  215. The Pharisees believed then

  216. that there would be

  217. a resurrection of the body.

  218. They believed in the existence

  219. of spirits,

  220. so angels and demons

  221. at work in the world.

  222. They also believed

  223. that God would reward

  224. or punish a person

  225. based on how they live their life.

  226. Some examples of those

  227. who grew up

  228. out of this movement

  229. of the Pharisees

  230. were Gamaliel,

  231. who discipled Saul of Tarsus.

  232. He was also a Pharisee.

  233. And then later,

  234. Josephus,

  235. one of the most solid,

  236. credible historians

  237. of this time period.

  238. In Acts 26.5,

  239. Paul says,

  240. I was according

  241. to the strictest party

  242. of our religion.

  243. That's who I was from.

  244. And I lived as a Pharisee.

  245. Paul knew this very well.

  246. But the scholar says,

  247. these Pharisees

  248. made one tragic error

  249. in their doctrine.

  250. They externalized religion.

  251. And they taught

  252. that conformity to the law

  253. on the outside,

  254. no matter what was going on

  255. in the heart,

  256. is how you could earn

  257. your own salvation.

  258. You can merit your salvation

  259. by the principle of works.

  260. If you work for it,

  261. God will see that

  262. and He'll give you

  263. eternal life.

  264. You see how that's

  265. a fatal flaw?

  266. And it's not enough

  267. to know God's Word

  268. and even teach others.

  269. Look at verse 10 briefly

  270. with Nicodemus in mind.

  271. Jesus says,

  272. not only are you

  273. a ruler of the Jews,

  274. you are the teacher

  275. of Israel.

  276. So,

  277. of all the Sanhedrin,

  278. of all the Pharisees,

  279. Jesus called Nicodemus

  280. number one.

  281. You are the teacher

  282. of all of Israel.

  283. And now He points out

  284. how He falls short.

  285. You do not know

  286. these things of heaven

  287. that I'm talking to you about.

  288. It's also not enough

  289. to have great esteem

  290. in the eyes of man.

  291. In the church

  292. or in the world,

  293. it doesn't matter.

  294. That's what Nicodemus had

  295. in addition to wealth

  296. and power.

  297. He was highly esteemed.

  298. He had that reputation.

  299. And he still falls short

  300. of the glory of God.

  301. It's not even enough

  302. to say,

  303. yeah,

  304. I believe historically

  305. this man Jesus

  306. performed these signs

  307. and that God was with him.

  308. Look at verse 2.

  309. Nicodemus says that.

  310. He says,

  311. we know you are a teacher

  312. come from God

  313. because of your signs.

  314. And then verse 2,

  315. he says,

  316. you wouldn't be able

  317. to do these signs

  318. unless God was with you.

  319. So yeah,

  320. you're from,

  321. God is with you.

  322. He's helping you

  323. to do these things.

  324. I believe that much

  325. about Jesus.

  326. And that much about Jesus

  327. means spiritual death.

  328. So knowing about God

  329. is not enough.

  330. Why is the new birth necessary?

  331. Number 2,

  332. it's necessary

  333. because all men

  334. from Adam onward

  335. are in spiritual darkness.

  336. Nicodemus came to visit Jesus

  337. in verse 1,

  338. we're told,

  339. verse 2,

  340. by night.

  341. We're in spiritual darkness.

  342. Remember,

  343. John is,

  344. he's a preacher of contrast,

  345. but he's also very subtle.

  346. And he's creating this backdrop

  347. of darkness

  348. surrounding the teacher

  349. of the Jews

  350. who needed the light

  351. from heaven

  352. so that he could even

  353. see the kingdom of God.

  354. All men

  355. are in spiritual darkness.

  356. Without the new birth,

  357. you can't even see

  358. God's kingdom,

  359. he says.

  360. You're so far away

  361. from heaven,

  362. from the presence

  363. of the holy God.

  364. It's not even in your sight.

  365. It's not even on the radar

  366. of what you should be

  367. walking toward.

  368. Under Adam's curse,

  369. your will,

  370. your very will,

  371. your desires are bound

  372. and enslaved

  373. to sin

  374. and to wickedness.

  375. Look at verse 6,

  376. what Jesus tells Nicodemus

  377. in verse 6.

  378. That which is born

  379. of flesh

  380. is what?

  381. It's flesh.

  382. He's saying,

  383. Nicodemus,

  384. you had one birth.

  385. You were born of flesh.

  386. That's not enough.

  387. You will fall short

  388. of the glory of God.

  389. The only birth you got

  390. came from the bloodline

  391. of Adam.

  392. You are still under the curse

  393. of that first

  394. federal representative head

  395. who was banished

  396. from the holy presence

  397. of God.

  398. You're under that curse.

  399. You're flesh.

  400. How could you ever

  401. understand heavenly things

  402. unless you are born again,

  403. born of heaven?

  404. The canons of Dort

  405. had to affirm this teaching.

  406. That which is born of flesh

  407. is flesh.

  408. You are born in sin.

  409. It's all over scripture.

  410. But our pride,

  411. like Nicodemus,

  412. our pride can blind us.

  413. So this doctrine

  414. called total depravity

  415. came under attack.

  416. And representatives

  417. from all the churches,

  418. different, you know,

  419. Presbyterian,

  420. Dutch Reformed,

  421. Anglican,

  422. they came together

  423. in the city of Dort

  424. and they came up

  425. with these statements,

  426. very simple,

  427. it's not even that long,

  428. just affirming,

  429. here's what the Bible teaches.

  430. And here's what they said,

  431. and this is one of our confessions

  432. at Reformed Heritage Church.

  433. It's simply this,

  434. you and I got our corruption

  435. from the nature

  436. of our original parent.

  437. That's Adam.

  438. That's what the Bible teaches.

  439. You and I were in sin

  440. since our conception.

  441. Think of Psalm 51.

  442. That's what David says.

  443. And we were by nature

  444. prone to evil,

  445. dead in sin,

  446. and in bondage,

  447. enslaved to sin.

  448. Think of Romans chapters 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  449. 2,

  450. and 3.

  451. So without the regenerating grace

  452. of the Holy Spirit,

  453. we are neither able

  454. nor willing

  455. to return to God

  456. by our own strength.

  457. We don't even desire

  458. to be reformed

  459. in our depraved nature.

  460. And we are not even willing

  461. to dispose ourself

  462. to be reformed.

  463. We have to affirm that

  464. from Scripture.

  465. Scripture.

  466. You cannot choose

  467. to have faith in God

  468. because you are so blind,

  469. you can't even grasp

  470. what it is you're supposed

  471. to have faith in.

  472. Notice how this is true.

  473. Look at verses 9 and 10.

  474. After Jesus tells him

  475. this truth,

  476. Nicodemus says,

  477. how can this be?

  478. See, he is his own

  479. case in point.

  480. How can this be?

  481. I don't understand

  482. what I'm even supposed

  483. to be grasping here.

  484. Because he's in that darkness,

  485. even though he knew the law

  486. and the word of God

  487. better than anyone else.

  488. He says,

  489. you are,

  490. Nicodemus is basically saying,

  491. I am still my own God

  492. and it's my own pride here

  493. and that is blinding me.

  494. And if you think

  495. that you can save yourself

  496. by being a good enough

  497. of a person,

  498. you're just as blind

  499. as Nicodemus

  500. until God gives you

  501. a new heart

  502. and opens your eyes

  503. to see that.

  504. No act of man,

  505. mere man,

  506. can save.

  507. It must be the act of God.

  508. Your pride will fight

  509. against this.

  510. You will hate

  511. to hear this doctrine.

  512. You will try to grab

  513. every argument you can

  514. to fight against it.

  515. That's what Nicodemus does.

  516. Look at verse 4.

  517. He says,

  518. he kind of ridicules

  519. this whole argument.

  520. How can a man

  521. who's old

  522. get it back into

  523. his mom's tummy

  524. and be born again

  525. when you're old?

  526. He just ridicules this.

  527. This is crazy.

  528. No one's going

  529. to believe that.

  530. And that's what

  531. our pride wants us to see.

  532. The gospel truth

  533. is going to seem

  534. like foolishness

  535. to the flesh.

  536. It's going to take

  537. an act of God.

  538. So here's our conclusion

  539. of why the new birth

  540. is necessary

  541. from these verses.

  542. Before anyone

  543. can enter the kingdom

  544. of God,

  545. he must be made

  546. to see

  547. the kingdom

  548. of God.

  549. And before you can even

  550. see the kingdom

  551. of God,

  552. verse 3,

  553. you must be born again

  554. from above.

  555. Your eyes must be opened.

  556. Hendrickson again

  557. concludes,

  558. He says,

  559. It is clear

  560. from the words

  561. of Christ Himself,

  562. therefore,

  563. that there is

  564. an act of God

  565. which precedes

  566. any act of man.

  567. Regeneration

  568. comes before

  569. conversion and faith.

  570. We just sang

  571. one of our songs.

  572. The verse was,

  573. Holy,

  574. holy,

  575. holy.

  576. Though the darkness

  577. hide thee.

  578. What's the next line?

  579. Though the eye

  580. of sinful man

  581. thy glory

  582. may not see.

  583. We just sang that.

  584. You must be born

  585. again,

  586. church.

  587. Children,

  588. you must be born

  589. again.

  590. That's what Jesus says.

  591. You must be

  592. regenerated.

  593. There was a preacher

  594. from England

  595. named George Whitefield

  596. in the mid to late

  597. 1700s

  598. and he came from England

  599. and he was preaching

  600. around all the colonies

  601. in America

  602. and one lady

  603. had followed him

  604. around.

  605. She'd been to one

  606. gathering where he

  607. preached the gospel

  608. from John 3

  609. and he said,

  610. you must be born again.

  611. And then she followed

  612. him to another gathering

  613. and he preached

  614. the same verse,

  615. you must be born again.

  616. And then it was

  617. another Lord's Day

  618. and there was no place

  619. for him to preach.

  620. They had just gone out

  621. to an open field,

  622. a pasture.

  623. A bunch of people

  624. came and just sat

  625. on the grass

  626. and stumps

  627. and George Whitefield

  628. opened up to John 3

  629. and said,

  630. you must be born again.

  631. And afterwards,

  632. she came up to him

  633. and said,

  634. preacher,

  635. why do you keep saying

  636. over and over,

  637. you must be born again?

  638. I don't know these details.

  639. This is how I imagine him

  640. swallowing hard,

  641. maybe praying

  642. that the Spirit

  643. will do a work

  644. in this lady's soul

  645. and with compassionate

  646. pastoral eyes

  647. to convey the grace

  648. that he's received.

  649. He said,

  650. dear lady,

  651. because you must

  652. be born again.

  653. Well,

  654. remember,

  655. you're going to have to say

  656. all glory be to God

  657. here in just a moment

  658. because you cannot

  659. enter the kingdom

  660. of God

  661. unless you are born

  662. of the Spirit.

  663. You cannot enjoy

  664. eternal life

  665. with God

  666. unless God

  667. gives you

  668. that life

  669. by the Holy Spirit.

  670. You are unable

  671. to choose

  672. salvation

  673. from sin

  674. by the power

  675. of your own will

  676. unless you are

  677. first regenerated

  678. by the Spirit

  679. of God

  680. sent from heaven.

  681. To do what?

  682. The Spirit

  683. applies to your soul

  684. the finished work

  685. that Christ accomplished.

  686. Why?

  687. Because your salvation

  688. is an act

  689. of God.

  690. All glory be to God.

  691. All glory be to God indeed.

  692. Well,

  693. that's why

  694. the new birth

  695. is necessary.

  696. Are you convinced

  697. the new birth

  698. is necessary

  699. for salvation?

  700. That God gets

  701. all the glory

  702. for salvation

  703. from the very start

  704. until the very end,

  705. the last breath

  706. before your soul

  707. is joined with Him.

  708. He gets the glory

  709. from start to finish.

  710. Well,

  711. the second point is

  712. if regeneration

  713. is necessary,

  714. what is it?

  715. What is this new birth?

  716. That's our second point.

  717. I want to break this down

  718. into four responses.

  719. Why?

  720. Or what regeneration

  721. is from this text.

  722. Number one,

  723. regeneration

  724. is a new birth.

  725. And the reason I say that

  726. is because Jesus,

  727. He is the creator

  728. of heaven and earth.

  729. He had literally

  730. every metaphor

  731. at His disposal.

  732. He had the longest list

  733. of things He could compare

  734. regeneration to.

  735. I mean,

  736. just think of it.

  737. Insects,

  738. you know,

  739. He could have picked anything.

  740. And what does He say

  741. regeneration is?

  742. Regeneration is new birth.

  743. So we need to

  744. take from that metaphor

  745. all that Christ intended

  746. to load into it

  747. that pregnant phrase.

  748. Look at verse 3

  749. one more time now.

  750. Not from Nicodemus'

  751. dark perspective,

  752. but from the words of Christ

  753. who came from heaven

  754. to show you

  755. the love of God.

  756. Verse 3,

  757. Truly, truly,

  758. I say to you,

  759. unless one is born again,

  760. he cannot see

  761. the kingdom of God.

  762. Now,

  763. underline that phrase,

  764. born again.

  765. I want you to think about

  766. a baby

  767. inside the womb

  768. being born into the world.

  769. And then also that word

  770. again.

  771. The word again

  772. can actually mean

  773. from above,

  774. which is a little bit different.

  775. It's like creation,

  776. you know,

  777. time and space is here.

  778. And what happens again,

  779. it's coming from

  780. somewhere beyond right here,

  781. so it actually makes sense.

  782. If you're born,

  783. you're going to be born again.

  784. You're going to be born

  785. from above.

  786. What Jesus says

  787. in John 6,

    John 6:44

  788. verses 44 and 45,

  789. no one,

  790. not even Nicodemus,

  791. not even you,

  792. no one,

  793. can come to me,

  794. says Jesus,

  795. unless the Father

  796. who sent me

  797. draws him.

  798. So,

  799. this regeneration

  800. is from above.

  801. It is also

  802. unmerited.

  803. Now back to the baby.

  804. Does a baby

  805. merit their birth?

  806. I mean,

  807. is anyone sitting there

  808. thinking,

  809. I did a great job

  810. at getting born.

  811. I mean,

  812. I really,

  813. I really had to,

  814. you know,

  815. get my head out first

  816. and just do my best.

  817. I worked hard

  818. for that one.

  819. No one is going to boast

  820. in your regeneration

  821. in the same way.

  822. Ephesians 2,

  823. for by grace

  824. you have been saved

  825. through faith.

  826. Listen to what Paul says next.

  827. And this

  828. is not

  829. your own doing.

  830. It is

  831. the gift

  832. of God.

  833. Just to make sure

  834. we're not confused,

  835. he says,

  836. it's not a result

  837. of works

  838. so that

  839. no one

  840. may boast.

  841. Finally,

  842. it's effectual.

  843. This new birth

  844. actually happens.

  845. A baby is not

  846. hypothetically born.

  847. You know,

  848. they are actually

  849. brought forth

  850. in the act

  851. of being born.

  852. God actually

  853. saves sinners.

  854. He does not

  855. create the possibility

  856. that you may choose

  857. to then,

  858. you know,

  859. set yourself free.

  860. No,

  861. he actually saves you

  862. from darkness.

  863. Galatians 4,

  864. 9 says,

  865. but now that you

  866. have come to know God

  867. or rather to be known

  868. by God,

  869. how can you turn back

  870. again to the weak

  871. and worthless

  872. elementary principles

  873. of the world?

  874. Now listen to this.

  875. Whose slaves

  876. you once were.

  877. If a slave is there

  878. in slavery

  879. and bondage,

  880. the Bible does not

  881. describe it as

  882. Christ coming

  883. and creating

  884. the conditions

  885. that would allow

  886. you to then

  887. choose to be set

  888. free.

  889. No,

  890. the word is

  891. ransomed.

  892. The blood of Jesus

  893. was the ransom price

  894. to purchase you,

  895. to remove you

  896. from that from

  897. which you were

  898. a slave,

  899. so you are

  900. actually saved.

  901. You are actually

  902. saved.

  903. The new covenant

  904. of Christ

  905. to save sinners

  906. is effectual.

  907. Now it's also

  908. a cleansing work.

  909. Look at verse 5.

  910. Jesus says,

  911. truly, truly,

  912. I say to you,

  913. unless one is born,

  914. this is confusing,

  915. unless one is born

  916. of water

  917. and the Holy Spirit,

  918. you cannot enter

  919. the kingdom

  920. of God.

  921. Now notice,

  922. in verse 3,

  923. Jesus says,

  924. you can't see

  925. the kingdom of God

  926. unless you're born again.

  927. And then verse 5,

  928. he opens it up

  929. even more.

  930. You cannot enter it.

  931. You couldn't see it.

  932. You still won't be able

  933. to enter it

  934. unless you're born

  935. of water

  936. and the Spirit.

  937. So by combining

  938. water and Spirit,

  939. he wants you to think

  940. of baptism.

  941. And I'll show you

  942. why this is.

  943. Remember in John chapter 2?

    John 2 chapter mention

  944. Remember how

  945. it was a wedding feast

  946. and there were

  947. these jars of cleansing.

  948. And the bride

  949. had to go through

  950. a cleansing ritual

  951. before she could

  952. consummate her marriage.

  953. Cleansing

  954. comes before

  955. consummation.

  956. The washing

  957. of the Spirit

  958. preparing you,

  959. that's sanctification,

  960. it comes before

  961. the wedding supper

  962. of the Lamb.

  963. So when the Spirit

  964. gives you new life,

  965. He's cleansing

  966. your entire being.

  967. He's reversing

  968. the curse of Adam.

  969. Body,

  970. mind,

  971. soul,

  972. all of those

  973. are cursed

  974. and tainted

  975. by sin.

  976. And the Spirit

  977. comes in and says,

  978. no,

  979. I'm going to gradually

  980. cleanse and reform

  981. every aspect

  982. of your being

  983. and prepare you

  984. for heaven.

  985. Jesus said

  986. in Mark 1,

  987. 8,

  988. I have,

  989. I'm sorry,

  990. John the Baptist

  991. said,

  992. I have baptized

  993. you with water,

  994. he's connecting it,

  995. but there is one

  996. coming who will

  997. baptize you

  998. with the Holy Spirit.

  999. Water and the Spirit

  1000. combine together.

  1001. So cleansing,

1002. the picture of the thing

  1003. it's pointing to,

  1004. it's really representing

  1005. the inward work

  1006. of the Holy Spirit

  1007. cleansing

  1008. the inner being

  1009. of those

  1010. Christ saved.

  1011. I do want to

  1012. make a comment

  1013. about this.

  1014. you must be born

  1015. of water

  1016. and the Spirit.

  1017. I'm so excited

  1018. that we have

  1019. a number

  1020. of our older children

  1021. who love the Lord

  1022. and who are growing

  1023. as disciples

  1024. in a hunger

1025. for the Word of God.

  1026. You need to hear

  1027. these words.

  1028. Jesus said,

  1029. you must be born

  1030. of water

  1031. and the Spirit.

  1032. He wants your baptism,

  1033. the picture

  1034. that we have

  1035. with water,

  1036. to be associated

  1037. with the true cleansing

  1038. that that points to

  1039. of the Holy Spirit

  1040. in you.

  1041. And that's what

  1042. your parents

  1043. and the church,

  1044. that's what we're here

  1045. to do with you,

  1046. to help you discern

  1047. that.

  1048. Is the Holy Spirit

  1049. cleansing you?

  1050. Is He giving you

  1051. a new heart,

  1052. growing your love

  1053. for Him

  1054. and bearing that fruit

  1055. that keeps with repentance?

1056. So let's define it here.

  1057. What is this cleansing

  1058. work of the Spirit

  1059. to regenerate?

  1060. Well, J.I. Packer,

1061. he puts it this way.

  1062. It is the implanting

  1063. of the seed

  1064. from which faith

  1065. and repentance

  1066. spring up

  1067. when you are

  1068. effectually called

  1069. to God.

  1070. The seed of

  1071. the Holy Spirit

  1072. put in you

  1073. to bring forth

  1074. this life

  1075. when you hear

  1076. God's word,

  1077. the gospel

  1078. that draws you

  1079. to God.

  1080. That's what

  1081. regeneration is.

  1082. Turn a few pages

  1083. forward to

  1084. 1 John chapter 3.

    1 John 3 chapter mention

1085. I want to show you

  1086. where J.I. Packer

  1087. gets this from.

  1088. 1 John chapter 3

    1 John 3:9

  1089. verse 9.

  1090. Now this is our

  1091. same human author.

  1092. The Holy Spirit,

  1093. you'll see

  1094. everywhere you turn

  1095. in the Bible

  1096. it's the same doctrine.

1097. Now the same human author,

  1098. John again,

  1099. in 1 John chapter 3

    1 John 3:9

  1100. verse 9.

1101. Look at what he says.

  1102. He says,

1103. No one born of God

  1104. makes a practice

  1105. of sinning,

  1106. for God's seed

  1107. abides in him,

  1108. and he cannot,

1109. just like you could not

  1110. save yourself,

1111. now with the Spirit in you,

1112. you cannot keep on sinning.

  1113. What a great promise.

  1114. Because he

  1115. has been born

  1116. of God.

  1117. What is regeneration?

  1118. It's a new birth.

  1119. It's a cleansing

  1120. work of God

  1121. in your life.

  1122. Number three,

  1123. it's above

  1124. man's comprehension.

  1125. Look at verse 8.

  1126. Jesus,

  1127. knowing that Nicodemus

  1128. is very confused

1129. and still in the dark,

1130. he tells them in verse 8,

  1131. the wind blows

  1132. where it wishes

  1133. and you hear

  1134. its sound,

  1135. but you

  1136. do not know

  1137. where it comes from

  1138. or where it goes.

  1139. It's above

  1140. your comprehension.

  1141. So it is

  1142. with everyone

  1143. who is born

  1144. of the Spirit.

1145. I want you to see

  1146. how the New Hampshire

  1147. Statement of Faith

  1148. that we subscribe to,

  1149. how it pulls

  1150. all these truths together.

  1151. Listen to this.

  1152. regeneration

  1153. consists in

  1154. the giving

  1155. of a new

  1156. and holy disposition

  1157. to an otherwise

  1158. rebellious heart.

  1159. It is accomplished

  1160. in a way

  1161. that is above

  1162. our comprehension

  1163. by the power

  1164. of the Holy Spirit

  1165. and in connection

  1166. with divine truth.

1167. As you hear the gospel,

  1168. you hear the truth,

  1169. the Spirit works.

  1170. Thus,

  1171. securing,

  1172. securing,

  1173. guaranteeing

  1174. your voluntary

  1175. obedience

  1176. to the gospel.

  1177. What a beautiful paradox.

  1178. What a glorious mystery.

  1179. Praise God

  1180. that it's above

  1181. our comprehension.

  1182. It's just true.

  1183. And the Spirit

  1184. helps us to believe

  1185. it is true.

1186. I want to show you

  1187. this same truth now.

  1188. Acts 26, 18.

1189. You can either turn there

  1190. or just listen carefully.

  1191. Acts 26,

    Acts 26:18

  1192. verse 18.

  1193. This is when Jesus

  1194. calls Paul

  1195. to be an apostle.

  1196. But it's not

  1197. the event itself.

  1198. It's Paul telling

  1199. his own testimony.

1200. The story of his regeneration

  1201. and his conversion.

  1202. Here's how Paul

  1203. describes it.

  1204. Jesus told Paul,

  1205. Paul,

  1206. through your preaching

  1207. to all the nations,

  1208. not only Jews

  1209. but to the Gentiles,

  1210. to every people,

  1211. through your preaching

  1212. to the nations,

1213. listen to what Jesus says,

1214. I will open their eyes

1215. so that they may turn

  1216. from darkness

  1217. to the light

  1218. and from the power

  1219. of Satan to God

  1220. that they may receive

  1221. forgiveness of sins

1222. and a place among those

  1223. who are sanctified

  1224. by faith in me.

1225. God will open their eyes.

  1226. They will turn.

  1227. Regeneration,

  1228. conversion.

  1229. The fourth thing

  1230. that regeneration is,

  1231. it's that.

  1232. It's the gift

  1233. of believing

  1234. in heavenly things.

  1235. Look at verse 12.

  1236. It's our last verse

  1237. of the text.

  1238. Jesus says,

1239. if I have told you

  1240. of earthly things

1241. and you do not believe,

  1242. how can you believe

  1243. if I tell you

  1244. heavenly things?

  1245. So it's a gift

1246. to be able to believe

  1247. in heavenly things.

1248. You don't get to boast

  1249. about the fact

  1250. that you believe

  1251. and you understand

  1252. and you have faith

  1253. in these heavenly

  1254. spiritual realities.

  1255. It's a gift.

  1256. You must understand

  1257. of heavenly things.

  1258. Without the work

  1259. of the Holy Spirit

  1260. inside you,

  1261. you will always

  1262. remain bound

  1263. to earthly things.

  1264. So regeneration

  1265. is an eye-opening experience.

  1266. In 1 Corinthians 12, 3,

  1267. Paul writes,

  1268. no one can say,

  1269. you cannot,

  1270. you're incapable

  1271. of saying,

  1272. Jesus is Lord

1273. except in the Holy Spirit.

  1274. Regeneration

  1275. is a fulfillment

  1276. of God's promise.

1277. This is the last text.

1278. I want you to turn

  1279. to this one.

1280. I need you to see

1281. this one with your own eyes.

1282. Turn to Ezekiel chapter 36.

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  1283. Regeneration

  1284. is a fulfillment

  1285. of God's promise.

  1286. What God says,

  1287. He is Jehovah.

1288. He is our covenant Lord.

  1289. What He says,

  1290. He fulfills.

  1291. So Ezekiel chapter 36,

    Ezekiel 36:25

  1292. verse 25 and 26.

  1293. Now the context

  1294. is important here.

  1295. The people of Israel

  1296. have been banished

  1297. from the land.

  1298. All of their hopes

  1299. and earthly promises

  1300. are gone.

  1301. And now God

  1302. raises up a prophet,

  1303. Ezekiel,

  1304. from exile

  1305. to this people

  1306. without a land,

  1307. without any earthly blessings.

  1308. And what is it

  1309. that He wants them

  1310. to still believe

  1311. and hold on to

  1312. as their hope?

  1313. It's these words.

  1314. Verse 25,

  1315. I will sprinkle

  1316. clean water on you

1317. and you shall be clean

  1318. from all your uncleanness

1319. and from all your idols

  1320. I will cleanse you.

  1321. 26,

  1322. I will give you

  1323. a new heart

  1324. and a new spirit

1325. I will put within you

  1326. and I will remove

  1327. the heart of stone

  1328. from your flesh

  1329. and give you

  1330. a heart of flesh.

  1331. God promises

  1332. He will do this

  1333. for His people.

  1334. regeneration is

  1335. a new birth,

1336. a cleansing work of God.

  1337. It's above man's comprehension.

  1338. It's a gift

  1339. of believing

  1340. these heavenly truths

  1341. that opens your eyes

  1342. to them

  1343. and it fulfills

  1344. everything God

  1345. has promised.

  1346. So our conclusion

  1347. to the second point,

  1348. what is it?

  1349. It's really been given

  1350. to us already.

  1351. You can turn back

  1352. a couple pages.

  1353. John chapter 1

    John 1:1

  1354. verses 1,

  1355. 11,

  1356. 12,

  1357. and 13.

  1358. Jesus said,

  1359. or actually John says,

  1360. of Jesus,

  1361. He came,

1362. so this is John 1

    John 1:11

  1363. verse 11,

1364. He came to His own

  1365. and His own people

  1366. did not receive Him.

1367. They had hearts of stone.

  1368. They are in darkness

  1369. like Nicodemus.

  1370. But to all

  1371. who did receive Him,

1372. who believed in His name,

  1373. how did they believe?

  1374. Because they were born

  1375. of the Spirit.

  1376. He opened their eyes

  1377. and to them

  1378. He gave the right

  1379. to become children

  1380. of God.

  1381. In case you're wondering

1382. or want to fight it

  1383. like Nicodemus,

  1384. here it is,

  1385. who were born

  1386. not of blood

  1387. nor of the will

  1388. of the flesh

  1389. nor of the will

  1390. of man

  1391. but of God.

  1392. So here's the promise

  1393. now to you.

  1394. Our same proposition,

  1395. if you have had

  1396. your eyes open

  1397. to believe in Christ,

  1398. you will enter

  1399. the kingdom of God

  1400. because you are born

  1401. of the Spirit.

  1402. You will enjoy

  1403. eternal life with God

  1404. once you are given

  1405. this new life

1406. promised by the Holy Spirit.

  1407. You are saved

  1408. from sin

1409. by the power of God

  1410. who regenerated you

  1411. by the Spirit

  1412. sent from heaven.

  1413. He applies the work

1414. of Christ to your soul

  1415. and He cleanses you.

  1416. He prepares your soul

1417. to rule with King Jesus

  1418. over the new heavens

  1419. and the new earth

  1420. forever.

  1421. Ready to call back

  1422. one more time?

1423. All glory be to God.

  1424. Your wondrous salvation

1425. is an act of God.

1426. All glory be to God.

  1427. All glory.

  1428. All glory.

  1429. Start to finish.

  1430. Be to God.

  1431. I don't want you

  1432. to leave here wondering

  1433. am I regenerated?

1434. I want to give you

  1435. seven points

  1436. briefly to reflect on

  1437. and these come from

  1438. Benjamin Keech's

  1439. Catechism of 1693.

  1440. Number one,

  1441. you are regenerated

1442. if God has given you

  1443. the gift of faith.

  1444. Has God worked faith

  1445. in you?

  1446. See, the Spirit

  1447. applies to us

  1448. the redemption

  1449. purchased by Christ

  1450. which is faith

  1451. working in you.

  1452. Number two,

  1453. you are regenerated

  1454. if you have heard

1455. or maybe you hear now

  1456. Christ calling you

  1457. to follow Him

  1458. as your Savior

  1459. and your Lord.

  1460. That means you are

  1461. united to Him.

  1462. His righteousness

  1463. is your righteousness.

  1464. Number three,

  1465. you are regenerated

  1466. if His Spirit

  1467. continues

  1468. to patiently

  1469. convince you

  1470. of your sin

  1471. and your need

  1472. for Him

  1473. every day,

  1474. every week.

  1475. Number four,

  1476. you are regenerated

  1477. if God shines

1478. the light of His Word

  1479. on your mind

1480. so that you are growing

  1481. in your knowledge

  1482. of Christ.

  1483. Number five,

  1484. you are regenerated

  1485. if God is increasingly,

  1486. not perfectly

  1487. until we join Him

  1488. in Heaven,

  1489. but increasingly,

  1490. season after season,

  1491. renewing your will

  1492. so that you will

  1493. seek first

  1494. His kingdom

  1495. and His righteousness.

  1496. I want to illustrate

  1497. this one

  1498. with something

  1499. that Martin Luther,

  1500. that great reformer

  1501. in the 1500s

  1502. said in his book

1503. The Bondage of the Will

  1504. about total depravity.

  1505. He said,

  1506. now,

  1507. with a regenerated heart,

  1508. I have the comfortable

  1509. certainty,

  1510. there's a great phrase,

  1511. it's a comfortable

  1512. certainty

  1513. that I please God

  1514. not by reason

  1515. of the merit

  1516. of my works,

  1517. the opposite

  1518. of Nicodemus,

  1519. but by reason

  1520. of His mercy

  1521. and His favor

  1522. which has been

  1523. promised to me.

  1524. We anchor our hopes

  1525. and our promise

  1526. on His word.

  1527. He's faithful.

  1528. Luther says,

1529. if I work too little

  1530. one day

  1531. and He does not

  1532. impute the condemnation

  1533. to me,

  1534. but with fatherly

  1535. compassion,

  1536. He pardons me

  1537. again

  1538. and He makes me

  1539. better.

  1540. Number six,

  1541. you are regenerated

  1542. if your heart

  1543. overflows

  1544. with praise to God

  1545. and you're so quick

  1546. to say,

1547. all glory be to God

  1548. because He's persuaded

  1549. you

  1550. and enabled you

  1551. to embrace Christ

  1552. who has been

  1553. freely offered

  1554. to you

  1555. in the gospel.

  1556. And number seven,

  1557. the last one

  1558. for application

  1559. is that

  1560. if you are

  1561. regenerated,

  1562. if you've experienced

  1563. a spiritual new birth,

  1564. you treasure Christ.

  1565. You treasure Him

  1566. as your Savior

  1567. and your Lord.

  1568. Do you treasure Christ?

1569. And I want to illustrate

  1570. treasuring Christ

  1571. from Nicodemus himself

  1572. from this same book.

  1573. In John chapter 19

    John 19 chapter mention

  1574. toward the very end

  1575. of this gospel account,

1576. we read in verse 39

  1577. that Nicodemus also,

  1578. along with those

  1579. who treasure Christ,

  1580. even as He was

  1581. hanging on the tree,

  1582. the same Nicodemus

  1583. who earlier

  1584. had come to Jesus

  1585. by night,

  1586. he came

  1587. bringing a mixture

  1588. of myrrh

  1589. and aloes,

  1590. about 75 pounds

  1591. of weight.

  1592. Did Nicodemus

  1593. treasure Christ?

1594. Well, that's the last thing

  1595. this same apostle

  1596. tells us of Nicodemus.

  1597. He's at the foot

  1598. of the cross.

  1599. He's bringing

  1600. His savings account

  1601. to help preserve

  1602. and embalm

  1603. the body

  1604. of Jesus.

  1605. And only the Lord

  1606. knows His heart.

1607. But if you had visited

  1608. Jesus by night

  1609. and you were left

  1610. in darkness,

  1611. you walk away

  1612. thinking,

  1613. this is foolishness.

  1614. The Holy Spirit

  1615. seems to have

  1616. brought Nicodemus

  1617. once again

  1618. to the foot

  1619. of the cross.

  1620. and as

  1621. they're removing

  1622. those long spikes

  1623. from His ankles

  1624. and His wrists,

  1625. the body

  1626. of God Himself,

  1627. Creator of heaven

  1628. and earth,

  1629. who took on

  1630. flesh,

  1631. paid for the sins

  1632. of everyone

  1633. who will believe

  1634. in His finished work.

  1635. We treasure Him.

  1636. I think Nicodemus

  1637. appears to have

  1638. treasured Christ

1639. and it made me think,

  1640. how do we even

  1641. get this account

  1642. in John chapter 3?

    John 3 chapter mention

  1643. We don't necessarily

1644. know that John the Apostle

  1645. heard any of this.

  1646. It could be that

  1647. Nicodemus was part

  1648. of that early church

  1649. and when you hear

  1650. Nicodemus,

1651. the ruler of the Jews,

  1652. giving his testimony,

  1653. bearing witness

1654. of the work of Christ,

  1655. this is how Nicodemus

  1656. wanted to tell

  1657. his testimony

  1658. and John was delighted

  1659. to record it.

  1660. So just like

  1661. John the Baptist,

1662. just like each one of them,

  1663. Christ must increase,

  1664. I must decrease.

  1665. So are you regenerated?

  1666. Well, tell your testimony.

  1667. Ask the Lord

1668. to give you that opportunity

  1669. and in your testimony

  1670. it will become evident.

  1671. Do you treasure Christ?

  1672. Christ.

  1673. In your testimony,

  1674. does God

  1675. save you

  1676. by an act

1677. that only God could do

  1678. so that He

  1679. gets all the glory?

  1680. Then find comfort.

  1681. Find that comforting

  1682. certainty

  1683. that He's given you

  1684. a new heart

  1685. and He who began

1686. a good work in you

  1687. will see it through

  1688. to completion

1689. at the return of Christ.

  1690. Can we say it

  1691. one more time?

  1692. Your salvation

1693. is an act of God.

  1694. All glory

  1695. be to God.

  1696. Let's pray

  1697. from 2 Timothy 1.9.

  1698. O God,

  1699. You

  1700. have saved

  1701. us

  1702. and You have

  1703. called us

  1704. to a holy calling

  1705. not because

  1706. of our works

  1707. but because

  1708. of Your own

  1709. purpose

  1710. and grace

  1711. which You gave us

  1712. in Christ Jesus

  1713. before the ages

  1714. begin.

  1715. Thanks be

  1716. to God.

  1717. We will take

  1718. a few moments

  1719. next.

  1720. all right.

  1721. All right.

  1722. All right.

  1723. All right.
