  1. So this is John chapter 3, verse 11 through 21.

    John 3:11–21

  2. Jesus says,

  3. Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and bear witness to what we have seen,

  4. but you do not receive our testimony.

  5. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe,

  6. how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

  7. No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.

  8. And as Moses lifted up the servant in the wilderness,

  9. so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  10. that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

  11. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,

  12. that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

  13. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,

  14. but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  15. Whoever believes in him is not condemned,

  16. but whoever does not believe is condemned already.

  17. Not because he has not believed in the name,

  18. condemned already because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

  19. Verse 19.

  20. And this is the judgment.

  21. The light has come into the world,

  22. and people have loved the darkness rather than the light,

  23. because their works were evil.

  24. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light,

  25. and does not come to the light,

  26. lest his works shall be exposed.

  27. But whoever does what is true comes to the light,

  28. so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.

  29. This is the inspired, inerrant, infallible word of God.

  30. Thanks be to God.

  31. You may be seated.

  32. Let's pray.

  33. Father, we come before you once again.

  34. You know what is in man.

  35. You know what we lack.

  36. You know what we need today.

  37. So we ask, Lord, in the words of that ancient prayer,

  38. once again, as your people,

  39. this little congregation,

  40. gathered in the name of King Jesus,

  41. we ask that what we know not,

  42. you will teach us.

  43. What we have not this morning,

  44. please give us.

  45. And what we are not yet,

  46. make us, Lord,

  47. for your glory.

  48. Amen.

  49. Amen.

  50. Well, on January 6th, 1815,

  51. there was a snowy blizzard in England,

  52. and there was a young man

  53. who would normally walk to a church a bit farther away,

  54. and he grew up in a Christian home.

  55. But this young man

  56. found himself not being able to go to his normal path,

  57. so instead,

  58. he went to this chapel that was a little bit closer.

  59. And for months now,

  60. he had felt so miserable.

  61. He was under deep conviction of his sin.

  62. He had no assurance that he was truly saved.

  63. And in this little chapel closer to a home

  64. that he'd never been to before,

  65. there he sat.

  66. Very few people showed up in that blizzardy morning.

  67. And it was actually not even the pastor.

  68. It was another member of the congregation,

  69. a lay man who had just prepared.

  70. He had one verse to preach,

  71. and it was Isaiah 45, verse 22,

    Isaiah 45:22

  72. which says this,

  73. Look to me and be saved,

  74. all the ends of the earth,

  75. for I am God,

  76. and there is no other.

  77. And the man just kept repeating that over and over.

  78. Look to me and be saved.

  79. This is what Jesus says to you.

  80. Look to me and be saved.

  81. And he called the young man out in front of everyone.

  82. He said,

  83. Young man, teenager,

  84. you look miserable.

  85. You look miserable.

  86. Look to Christ.

  87. Don't live in fear of condemnation forever.

  88. Look to Christ and have eternal life.

  89. Don't believe in your worth or all your shortcomings.

  90. Don't let Satan attack you.

  91. Just look to Christ.

  92. He promises you will be saved

  93. if you simply look to him.

  94. Well, this teenager felt the call to follow Christ.

  95. Christ became Lord of his life.

  96. He started devouring his dad's and grandpa's libraries,

  97. reading the old Puritans,

  98. and he became a popular pastor in London,

  99. in the Victorian era,

  100. named Charles Haddon Spurgeon.

  101. That's how God saved Charles Spurgeon.

  102. And Charles Spurgeon said,

  103. Once a year,

  104. he wants to make it his humble practice

  105. to preach a sermon on John 3.16.

  106. The reason is because he says,

  107. There is nothing I or any preacher can say on John 3.16

  108. that has not been said already.

  109. And when, not if, but when,

  110. God moves by the power of his spirit

  111. through those words,

  112. he will know,

  113. and everyone will know,

  114. it's not the ministry of the people.

  115. It's the work of Christ.

  116. It's the gospel of Jesus Christ

  117. so that no man can boast or take credit.

  118. John 3.16 is our text for today.

  119. It's been described as an ocean of gospel truth

  120. in a drop of words.

  121. Martin Luther called it the miniature gospel.

  122. And on his deathbed,

  123. Martin Luther wanted to hear John 3.16

  124. over and over and over.

  125. It's the whole story of how God saves sinners in a verse.

  126. There was a missionary named Henry Knott,

  127. and he traveled part of William Carey's mission movement

  128. from London as well.

  129. He traveled to the Polynesian Islands.

  130. So picture going to Hawaii,

  131. you're in the middle of the Pacific Ocean,

  132. you go south.

  133. That's where Polynesian Islands are.

  134. One of the islands is called Tahiti.

  135. So it's basically between Hawaii and New Zealand, Australia.

  136. That's where Tahiti is.

  137. And this missionary, Henry Knott,

  138. the first sentence he wanted to learn

  139. in the language of the Tahitians

  140. was John 3.16.

  141. And as they began that project

  142. of trying to now translate verse by verse

  143. into the language of the people of this island,

  144. the first verse he wanted to translate

  145. was John 3.16.

  146. Look in your Bible.

  147. In the ESV, John 3.16 reads like this.

  148. Now, in verses 15, 16, and 18,

  149. look at verse 15.

  150. The phrase is,

  151. whoever believes in him.

  152. You see that in verse 15?

  153. Whoever believes in him.

  154. In verse 16, that's what we read.

  155. Whoever believes in him.

  156. And then verse 18, it's that same promise.

  157. Whoever believes in him.

  158. In the Greek, it's literally translated

  159. anyone believing into him.

  160. So believing in Christ is believing into Christ.

  161. And that's significant because through faith,

  162. you are united to Jesus Christ.

  163. And his righteousness becomes your righteousness.

  164. His love with the Trinity,

  165. Father, Son, and Spirit becomes your love now.

  166. You get pulled in to the work of Christ

  167. by being in him,

  168. by believing into Jesus.

  169. So church, that's really the message for today.

  170. And I want you to hear it

  171. from Jesus Christ.

  172. Jesus himself is the one

  173. who urges you this day.

  174. Look to me and be saved.

  175. Look to me and be saved.

  176. All the ends of the earth.

  177. For I am God.

  178. And there is no other.

  179. Believe into Christ and have eternal life.

  180. My prayer is simply that you'll understand

  181. the meaning of our Lord Jesus

  182. with those glorious words.

  183. And I'm going to try to open this for you

  184. in just two ways.

  185. The first one is the first part of the verse.

  186. For God so loved the world

  187. that he gave his only Son.

  188. And what I want to emphasize with that

  189. is what is true of God.

  190. And that's the first half.

  191. The second half is what is true of you

  192. that whoever believes in him

  193. or into him should not perish

  194. but have eternal life.

  195. So what is true of God first?

  196. Second, what is true of you?

  197. What is true of God?

  198. For God so loved the world.

  199. Number one, this is true.

  200. Jesus Christ came to reveal to you

  201. that God is love.

  202. Jesus reveals that God is love.

  203. Look at verse 17 as confirmation.

  204. I'm pulling in these surrounding verses

  205. as context for verse 16.

  206. So verse 17 we read that God did not send

  207. his Son into the world

  208. to condemn the world.

  209. See, God so loved the world

  210. that's why he sent his Son.

  211. The very first cause of Jesus' mission

  212. is the love of God.

  213. And it's so significant

  214. because of two things.

  215. Number one, the loveliness of God's love.

  216. Number two, the worldliness of the world.

  217. Both of those things make the love of God

  218. just something that's mind-blowing.

  219. So first of all, the loveliness of God's love.

  220. Well, we're told in 1 John 4, verse 16

    1 John 4:16

  221. that God is love.

  222. We know that God is, from his scripture,

  223. God is eternal.

  224. So God is love and God is eternal.

  225. Therefore, God loves beyond measurement

  226. of time and space.

  227. We know from the Bible that God is infinite.

  228. You know what that means about God's love?

  229. God's love has no limits in Christ.

  230. We know that God is unchangeable.

  231. So he loves in an unchanging way

  232. all those who are united to Christ.

  233. We know from the Bible that God is powerful.

  234. So God loves powerfully.

  235. When he displays his saving love through Jesus,

  236. it works powerfully on all those

  237. who will be believing into him

  238. because the Spirit's regenerating them powerfully.

  239. We know that God is perfect.

  240. God is immeasurable.

  241. And God is wise.

  242. So the love of God shown to you in Jesus Christ

  243. is perfect.

  244. It is wise.

  245. And there's no measurement in human standards

  246. of the love of God.

  247. Do you see how lovely the love of God is?

  248. Now the verse says,

  249. God, this God we're talking about,

  250. so loved the world.

  251. Well, the connotation for the word world,

  252. in the Greek it's cosmos.

  253. And so you can even picture that magazine

  254. as you're going to check out of the grocery store,

  255. cosmopolitan.

  256. It really means worldly.

  257. God so loved the worldly world.

  258. God so loved the cosmos.

  259. It doesn't mean to emphasize how big it is.

  260. It means to emphasize how bad the world is.

  261. That's how that connotation is always used.

  262. So all nations,

  263. no matter what tribe you're from,

  264. Israel, Tahiti,

  265. anywhere else in the world,

  266. all are part of this fallen,

  267. depraved, dark world.

  268. And it's God divinely loving,

  269. perfectly, wisely loving,

  270. this fallen, worldly world.

  271. To prove to you that this is

  272. how that word is normally used,

  273. the same author,

  274. 1 John,

  275. in 1 John chapter 2,

    1 John 2:15–17

  276. verses 15 through 17.

  277. He writes,

  278. go ahead and turn there.

  279. Let's turn a few pages.

  280. 1 John chapter 2,

    1 John 2:15–17

  281. verses 15 through 17.

  282. Every time I come to the word world,

  283. I'm going to say cosmos.

  284. So you get the picture.

  285. It's the same word.

  286. 1 John 2, 15, 17.

  287. Here's what John wrote.

  288. Verse 15,

  289. Do not love the cosmos

  290. or the things of the cosmos.

  291. If anyone loves the cosmos,

  292. the love of the Father is not in him.

  293. Do you get the picture?

  294. The world is worldly.

  295. If you're loving the things

  296. of this fallen, depraved world,

  297. then the love of God

  298. is clearly not in you.

  299. Those are incompatible.

  300. Verse 16,

  301. For all that is in the world,

  302. the desires of the flesh,

  303. the desires of the eye,

  304. and the pride of life

  305. is not from the Father,

  306. but is from the world.

  307. Verse 17,

  308. And the world is passing away

  309. along with its desires,

  310. but whoever does the will of God

  311. abides forever.

  312. Now, if God is holy,

  313. but yet God loves this fallen,

  314. bad, dark world,

  315. how does that even work?

  316. How can it be that such a holy God

  317. would love the world?

  318. And that's exactly what Jesus shows us.

  319. It's only with the selfless,

  320. costly love of redemption

  321. that God can love those

  322. who are still in the world

  323. and love them to save them

  324. out of the world.

  325. John Calvin put it this way,

  326. Jesus does not say that God

  327. was moved to deliver us

  328. because he perceived in us

  329. something that was worthy

  330. of so excellent a blessing,

  331. but he ascribes the glory

  332. of our deliverance

  333. entirely to God's love.

  334. You see why it's important

  335. that this holy God

  336. shows his love to a fallen world?

  337. It's so that none of us

  338. can boast of anything worthy in us.

  339. Why did God save me

  340. and not the person next to me?

  341. Why did he save my family

  342. and not this family

  343. on the other side of the world?

  344. It has nothing to do

  345. with how good you are.

  346. It has everything to do

  347. with the wise, powerful,

  348. perfect love of God

  349. to redeem anyone,

  350. any sinner out of this fallen world

  351. so that God gets all the glory.

  352. See, left to itself,

  353. this worldly world is in death.

  354. And how is it that God loves the world?

  355. Well, think about it.

  356. Every one of these disciples

  357. and everyone who is truly united in Christ

  358. was of the world.

  359. So God loved you

  360. while you were yet in the world.

  361. That's how he loves the world.

  362. In John 15, 19, we read,

  363. If you were of the world,

  364. the world would love you as its own.

  365. But because you are not of the world,

  366. but I chose you out of the world,

  367. therefore the world now hates you.

  368. So they are the world.

  369. You are the world

  370. until God saves you

  371. through Jesus Christ.

  372. And it's the gospel

  373. that comes first to those

  374. in darkness,

  375. pulling them out now

  376. and giving them life eternal,

  377. life of the age to come now.

  378. So what is true of God?

  379. It's true that God so loved the world

  380. that Jesus Christ came to reveal

  381. the love of God.

  382. It's also this,

  383. that Jesus was given.

  384. See, our verse says that

  385. God in his love gave Jesus.

  386. That's our second truth of God

  387. is that Jesus Christ is sent

  388. on a sacrificial mission.

  389. We can confirm this

  390. with the second half of verse 17.

  391. Look at verse 17.

  392. We're told God sent his son

  393. in order that the world

  394. be saved through him.

  395. The mission of Jesus,

  396. it was sacrificial,

  397. being sent by the Father

  398. so that the world

  399. could be saved through him.

  400. See, Jesus in the gospel of John

  401. is on the move.

  402. He is going and coming.

  403. He's ascending and descending

  404. and it's language of a trip.

  405. Scholars have noted

  406. how there are three times

  407. where John points out

  408. Jesus is taking a trip

  409. up to Jerusalem.

  410. So he's singing those psalms

  411. of ascent going up

  412. through Jerusalem

  413. and it's really his way

  414. of journeying back to his Father.

  415. The fourth time

  416. when Jesus goes up to Jerusalem,

  417. it's on his trip to the cross.

  418. And so the cross

  419. was one of the stations

  420. on his trip of ascending

  421. back to the Father.

  422. See, God gave his son.

  423. He said,

  424. Son, you go into that dark world

  425. and the way that you redeem

  426. sinners out of it

  427. is you will go through the cross

  428. and you will bring many sons

  429. and daughters to glory with you.

  430. It was the active

  431. and passive obedience

  432. of Jesus in the body.

  433. That was his mission.

  434. And then through the cross,

  435. he leads us like a parade,

  436. ascending up to heaven

  437. to be with the Father.

  438. But before he could ascend

  439. in glory,

  440. first he had to descend.

  441. This is what all the New Testament

  442. is proclaiming.

  443. Philippians 2.8,

  444. being found in human form,

  445. he humbled himself.

  446. himself.

  447. He's made low.

  448. He's descending

  449. by becoming obedient

  450. to the point of death,

  451. even death on a cross.

  452. This is what the church

  453. has called

  454. the humiliation of Christ.

  455. And Benjamin Keech's

  456. catechism

  457. in the 1600s,

  458. he summarizes scripture

  459. this way.

  460. Christ's humiliation

  461. consisted in his being born.

  462. Even his incarnation

  463. was him being made low.

  464. That in a low condition,

  465. made under the law.

  466. He was born into Israel

  467. under this principle of works

  468. that they had to merit life

  469. in Israel.

  470. Under the law,

  471. undergoing the miseries

  472. of this life.

  473. Have you felt miseries

  474. of this life this week?

  475. I'm sure every single one

  476. of us has.

  477. Jesus took on flesh

  478. so he could be

  479. your representative.

  480. There's not a temptation

  481. that you face,

  482. you'll face this upcoming week

  483. that Christ himself

  484. has not fought

  485. and conquered for you.

  486. And on the cross,

  487. he bore the wrath of God

  488. for sin,

  489. for your sin.

  490. And the curse of death

  491. on the cross,

  492. and being buried,

  493. and then continuing

  494. under the power of death

  495. for some time,

  496. three days,

  497. made low,

  498. as low as can be.

  499. So what was

  500. the mission of Jesus?

  501. Please turn to Isaiah 53.

  502. We read,

  503. in our assurance of pardon,

  504. that by his wounds,

  505. we have been healed

  506. from Isaiah 53 as well.

  507. So turn to Isaiah 53,

  508. and I want to show you

  509. the covenant of redemption

  510. in these verses.

  511. Isaiah 53,

  512. looking at verse 12.

  513. So in your Bible,

  514. you can look,

  515. we read earlier,

  516. verse 3 through 5.

  517. He was despised

  518. and rejected

  519. by men made low.

  520. And then verse 5,

  521. it was the chastisement

  522. of Christ

  523. that brought us peace,

  524. and by his wounds

  525. we are healed.

  526. How did this fulfill

  527. the Father's plan

  528. and the Father's will?

  529. Look at verse 12.

  530. The Father now says,

  531. I will divide him.

  532. So the Father

  533. will give to the Son

  534. a portion

  535. with the many,

  536. and he shall divide

  537. the spoil

  538. with the strong.

  539. So you need to understand

  540. the language Isaiah

  541. is grabbing here

  542. to paint this picture.

  543. If you have a mighty emperor

  544. with a general,

  545. the general would be sent out

  546. by the emperor,

  547. you know,

  548. by the king,

  549. the supreme ruler,

  550. send out a mighty general.

  551. The general would conquer

  552. and fulfill the mission

  553. and bring back the spoils.

  554. And the spoils

  555. would be divided

  556. with his soldiers

  557. and being brought back

  558. to the empire.

  559. So that's the language

  560. Isaiah is borrowing

  561. to say the Father

  562. sent the Son

  563. on a mission.

  564. He gave his Son

  565. sacrificially

  566. so that then

  567. when the Son returns,

  568. he ascends back

  569. to heaven victorious.

  570. The Father rewards him.

  571. He lacked nothing,

  572. but he made himself empty

  573. so that his reward

  574. could be you.

  575. You who believe,

  576. you who are purchased

  577. by the blood of Christ,

  578. you are the reward

  579. that the Father

  580. gives to the Son

  581. for his mission accomplished.

  582. Look at the rest

  583. of verse 12.

  584. Why?

  585. Why can this be?

  586. Because he poured out

  587. his soul to death

  588. and was numbered

  589. with the transgressors.

  590. He put his lot

  591. with yours.

  592. He was humbled

  593. and he said,

  594. those who have offended

  595. the mighty God,

  596. I am with them.

  597. I'm among them

  598. and from their midst

  599. I will redeem them.

  600. And now where is Jesus?

  601. Because he bore

  602. the sins of many,

  603. he makes intercession

  604. for the transgressors.

  605. So he loved the world

  606. and he bore the sins of,

  607. what's the next word?

  608. He bore the sins

  609. of many out of the world.

  610. See, his love is wise

  611. and not a drop

  612. of Christ's blood

  613. is wasted

  614. and God is powerful

  615. and when God saves,

  616. he actually saves.

  617. And now he intercedes

  618. and he's wise

  619. and perfect.

  620. He doesn't waste his prayer

  621. because when he prays,

  622. it happens.

  623. And that's what

  624. our hymn captures.

  625. We sing,

  626. before the throne

  627. of God above,

  628. I have a strong

  629. and perfect plea.

  630. Who is it

  631. that prays powerfully

  632. this strong plea?

  633. That's a perfect plea.

  634. What Jesus prays happens.

  635. It comes from the lips

  636. of the high priest

  637. whose name is love.

  638. And like Hebrews says,

  639. he ever lives

  640. and pleads for me.

  641. Can you find comfort

  642. that the Father

  643. in his love

  644. gave Jesus

  645. to redeem you,

  646. to ransom you

  647. out of the worldly world?

  648. And he gave his only son,

  649. our verse says,

  650. so Jesus Christ

  651. is the promised son.

  652. And we hear son of God

  653. and son of man.

  654. Scripture uses both

  655. to describe Jesus.

  656. Both are fulfilling prophecies.

  657. Our catechism captured that.

  658. He must be fully divine

  659. and without sin.

  660. And he also must be

  661. a representative head.

  662. He must become one

  663. with the transgressors

  664. to redeem us.

  665. So one person,

  666. the son,

  667. according to his human

  668. and divine nature,

  669. Jesus Christ,

  670. fully satisfying the will

  671. and the wisdom

  672. of the Father.

  673. Verse 13,

  674. look at that.

  675. Jesus says,

  676. no one has ascended

  677. into heaven

  678. except the one

  679. who descended from heaven,

  680. the son of man.

  681. He's most likely alluding

  682. to Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7:13

  683. verse 13.

  684. Daniel has this vision.

  685. Listen how both are combined.

  686. In Daniel's vision,

  687. he says,

  688. behold,

  689. with the clouds of heaven,

  690. so a heavenly spiritual being

  691. with the clouds of heaven,

  692. there came one

  693. like a son of man.

  694. See,

  695. he's a son of man.

  696. He's identifying

  697. with the transgressors,

  698. but he's from the clouds

  699. of heaven.

  700. He's from the spiritual,

  701. eternal realm

  702. where God dwells.

  703. Jesus says,

  704. you can believe me.

  705. I'm trustworthy

  706. because I'm from heaven.

  707. That's why I'm here.

  708. And he says,

  709. no one can share with you

  710. unless they've ascended.

  711. You know,

  712. you have to know God in heaven

  713. in order to make him

  714. revealed on earth.

  715. And so to ascend to heaven

  716. means that Jesus alone

  717. is the pure knowledge

  718. of the mysteries of God.

  719. and he is the light

  720. of spiritual understanding.

  721. We know Jesus,

  722. his permanent dwelling

  723. is with the father

  724. because Mark 16,

  725. 19 says,

  726. then the Lord Jesus,

  727. after he had spoken

  728. to the disciples,

  729. so there's again,

  730. according to his human nature,

  731. even after the resurrection,

  732. speaking with them,

  733. he shared food with them.

  734. So Jesus,

  735. in the glorified body

  736. with his disciples,

  737. so that's the son of man,

  738. he was then taken up

  739. from them

  740. into heaven

  741. and sat down

  742. at the right hand

  743. of God,

  744. who is spirit.

  745. See how glorious

  746. our Christ is?

  747. Jesus' return

  748. to the glory

  749. that he had with the father

  750. before the world began

  751. was accomplished

  752. by him being lifted up

  753. on the cross.

  754. And it is this exaltation now

  755. that draws sinners

  756. to him.

  757. In the book of John,

  758. just like in the book of Isaiah,

  759. is the suffering servant

  760. who's also exalted.

  761. It's through his humiliation

  762. that he's been lifted up

  763. on high

  764. so that all can behold him.

  765. To be lifted up

  766. means that he's set

  767. on display

  768. so that all the world

  769. can see

  770. and believe in him.

  771. And that's why Christ now,

  772. from heaven,

  773. urges you

  774. this morning, church,

  775. look to me

  776. and be saved,

  777. all the ends

  778. of the earth,

  779. for I am God

  780. and there is no other.

  781. Believe into Christ

  782. and have eternal life.

  783. You might be thinking,

  784. it's hard for me

  785. to accept such glorious truth.

  786. And it is,

  787. unless the Spirit

  788. gives you a heart

  789. to believe.

  790. But I want to share

  791. with you a story

  792. from missionaries

  793. in the 1700s

  794. of a very dark,

  795. worldly part

  796. of the world.

  797. So we could read

  798. this verse like this,

  799. For God so loved

  800. the Tahitians.

  801. And this comes

  802. from the biography

  803. of Henry Knott

  804. that I mentioned

  805. a moment ago

  806. called The Herald

  807. of the Love of God

  808. to Tahiti

  809. by Eugene Meyer Harrison

  810. written almost

  811. a hundred years ago.

  812. There were reports

  813. from Captain Cook

  814. who had traveled

  815. the Pacific Ocean

  816. that there's a people

  817. in Tahiti

  818. that were a warring people.

  819. They're always at war.

  820. They idolized revenge.

  821. And they had this weapon

  822. and it was specifically

  823. to be used for revenge.

  824. So we go to war,

  825. one tribe against the other.

  826. The losing tribe,

  827. you'd have a few that win

  828. and they flee into the mountains.

  829. They would not leave them alone.

  830. They would go hunt them down.

  831. And they made a special weapon

  832. taking the tail

  833. of three different stingrays

  834. and they loosely attached it

  835. to a long pole.

  836. And they would chase their enemy

  837. and they would spike it

  838. into their body

  839. so that it would come

  840. detached from the pole.

  841. And those stingray tails,

  842. they have barbs on them

  843. so it goes into the flesh

  844. and does not come out easily.

  845. These Tahitians,

  846. they had a very strong sense

  847. of their own judgment

  848. that they would receive

  849. for their wickedness.

  850. But they did it

  851. by appeasing these gods.

  852. So they fashioned gods

  853. out of birds,

  854. turtles,

  855. and sharks.

  856. And these animals,

  857. and also the sun and the moon,

  858. these gods

  859. that they made idols out of,

  860. they had axes and swords

  861. and hammers

  862. that were used to punish you

  863. if you did not pay them

  864. for your sins.

  865. So they had that,

  866. you know,

  867. Romans 1,

  868. that sin was imprinted

  869. on their heart.

  870. They killed two-thirds

  871. of their babies

  872. upon their birth.

  873. They would make alcohol

  874. out of this fruit

  875. called kava.

  876. And they were said

  877. to be almost universally drunk

  878. and acting more like demons

  879. than human beings.

  880. There was a special,

  881. like,

  882. religious class among them

  883. that would paint their bodies

  884. in dark charcoal

  885. and then make their faces white.

  886. And they were terrifying.

  887. There were these two sailors,

  888. one from Sweden,

  889. who landed there

  890. and they were translators

  891. because they just had to survive

  892. and so they learned the language.

  893. And they had made

  894. several observations.

  895. They wrote down

  896. that they would take

  897. the infirmed

  898. or the weak

  899. or the elderly among them

  900. and they would walk them

  901. out to the ocean

  902. like these beautiful beaches

  903. of Pacific Ocean,

  904. huge palm trees,

  905. and they'd pretend

  906. like they're going to bathe them.

  907. But instead,

  908. they had already dug out

  909. a hole in the sand

  910. and they would tip

  911. their own family members

  912. into that hole

  913. and kill them with stones

  914. and bury them

  915. and leave them there

  916. and then go back

  917. and steal all their possessions.

  918. Now, hold on.

  919. We just read that God

  920. so loved the world.

  921. God loves the Tahitians?

  922. How could this be?

  923. They had a temple

  924. to these idols,

  925. these gods of theirs,

  926. and the pillar

  927. of one of the temples

  928. was made up.

  929. I'm not going to share

  930. more details,

  931. but it was made up

  932. of human sacrifices.

  933. And God loved,

  934. somehow,

  935. these Tahitians

  936. and he would save them?

  937. How could this be?

  938. See, Jesus says

  939. that this way of the cross,

  940. going through the cross,

  941. before he ascends

  942. to be in the glory

  943. of the Father,

  944. in John chapter 12,

    John 12:26

  945. verse 26,

  946. he says,

  947. whoever comes after me

  948. must take up his cross

  949. and follow me.

  950. So the way of life

  951. in Christ

  952. is the way of the cross.

  953. And in John chapter 20,

    John 20:21

  954. verse 21,

  955. Jesus says

  956. to all who are his disciples,

  957. as the Father sent me,

  958. so I am sending you.

  959. And there was this man

  960. back in England

  961. at the same time

  962. who was a simple laborer,

  963. worked in the trades

  964. as a bricklayer.

  965. And his name

  966. was Henry Knott.

  967. And he,

  968. along with William Carey,

  969. they were part of

  970. a Reformed Baptist church

  971. like this one,

  972. the same confessions

  973. that we hold to.

  974. And he went

  975. to be a missionary

  976. to the Tahitians.

  977. He saw three of his friends

  978. killed by the Tahitians

  979. the very first year

  980. that they got there.

  981. But he did not leave.

  982. There were several times

  983. over decades

  984. where he was the only missionary

  985. still there,

  986. somehow,

  987. still alive.

  988. Others kept leaving

  989. and others would arrive.

  990. Well, finally,

  991. after much prayer

  992. and persistence

  993. and trying to learn

  994. their language,

  995. on March 19th,

  996. the Lord's Day,

  997. it was a Sunday,

  998. 1797 was the year,

  999. under the cover

  1000. of these enormous trees,

  1001. they gathered

  1002. to have their first

  1003. public worship service.

1004. And here's what Mr. Knott

  1005. started that service off.

  1006. He had a translator

  1007. for the first part.

  1008. He said,

  1009. O Tahitians,

  1010. I come with a message

  1011. of infinite compassion

1012. to those in deep distress.

  1013. I bring glad tidings,

  1014. glad news of salvation

1015. to those who are in

  1016. sin's control.

  1017. I proclaim a gospel

  1018. of comfort

1019. to those in sorrow's gloom.

  1020. And then,

1021. he quoted the first verse

  1022. he had translated

  1023. and memorized

  1024. into the Tahitian language.

  1025. For God so loved

  1026. the world

  1027. that he gave

  1028. his only son

  1029. that whoever

  1030. believes in him

  1031. should not perish

  1032. but have eternal life.

  1033. that's the truth

  1034. for you today,

  1035. church.

  1036. Christ urges you

  1037. from heaven,

  1038. look to me

  1039. and be saved,

  1040. all the ends

  1041. of the earth,

  1042. for I am God

  1043. and there is

  1044. no other.

  1045. Believe into

  1046. Jesus Christ

  1047. and have

  1048. eternal life.

  1049. see how the gospel

  1050. is simply

  1051. opening up to you

  1052. what is

  1053. and always

  1054. has been true

  1055. of God.

  1056. We're going to have

  1057. to divide this

  1058. into two parts

  1059. so next week

  1060. we'll see what's

  1061. true of us.

  1062. Let's pray.

  1063. Oh Father,

  1064. we believe

  1065. your promise

  1066. in Isaiah chapter 2

    Isaiah 2:2

  1067. verse 2

  1068. that it shall

  1069. come to pass

  1070. in the latter days

  1071. that your kingdom

  1072. like a mighty mountain

  1073. where you,

  1074. O Lord,

  1075. dwell from

  1076. where you rule.

  1077. Your everlasting kingdom

  1078. shall be established

  1079. as the highest

  1080. of the mountains.

  1081. Your kingdom

  1082. shall be lifted up

  1083. and all the nations

  1084. will flow to you.

  1085. Lord,

  1086. I plead with Christ

  1087. right now

  1088. that none

  1089. of our loved ones

  1090. here today

  1091. or around the world

  1092. will be caught

  1093. loving darkness,

  1094. that none

  1095. will be caught

  1096. choosing death

  1097. and despising

  1098. your precious

  1099. son Jesus Christ

  1100. whom you sent

  1101. because you

  1102. so loved us

  1103. in this sinful world.

  1104. May each one

  1105. whom you have

  1106. given spiritual ears

  1107. to hear this

  1108. very moment

  1109. believe into

  1110. Christ

  1111. and have

  1112. eternal life.

  1113. We beg you.

  1114. Amen.

  1115. Amen.

  1116. As you prepare

  1117. your heart now

  1118. to proclaim

  1119. this gospel

  1120. by taking

  1121. the Lord's Supper,

  1122. I want to

  1123. share with you

  1124. what Thomas Watson,

  1125. one of the Puritans,

  1126. wrote

  1127. of the Lord's Supper,

  1128. that it's a visible

  1129. sermon

  1130. in his words.

  1131. It's a sermon

  1132. wherein Christ

  1133. crucified

  1134. is set before us

  1135. it's a New Testament

  1136. sacrament

  1137. wherein our

  1138. communion with

  1139. Christ

  1140. is signified

  1141. for us

  1142. in these elements.

  1143. It's a divinely

  1144. instituted sacrament

  1145. wherein Christ's

  1146. death

  1147. is showed forth

  1148. by giving

  1149. and receiving

  1150. bread

  1151. and the fruit

  1152. of the vine.

  1153. Now listen to this.

  1154. When you partake

  1155. of Christ,

  1156. you receive

  1157. all the benefits

  1158. that flow

  1159. from the throne

  1160. of God's glory

  1161. to you

  1162. through the mediation

  1163. of your Savior,

  1164. Jesus Christ.

  1165. So take a moment,

  1166. still your heart,

  1167. ask the Lord

  1168. to prepare you

  1169. for this celebration,

  1170. this visible sermon,

  1171. and by taking it,

  1172. you are proclaiming

  1173. this glorious gospel

  1174. of Jesus.

  1175. When you're ready,

  1176. we're going to come

  1177. through this center

  1178. row right here

  1179. and we can take

  1180. the elements

  1181. and then after

  1182. you've taken them,

  1183. you can go around

  1184. the outsides

  1185. back to your seat

  1186. and we'll hold on

  1187. to them and then

  1188. enjoy together

  1189. with the words

  1190. of institution.
