  1. John chapter 4, verses 1 through 42.

    John 4:1–42

  2. And as you hear this, believe that this is the inspired, inerrant, and infallible Word of God.

  3. And it's given for you, beloved congregation of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  4. When I'm done reading this sermon text for today, I'll say this is the Word of God.

  5. And you respond, thanks be to God.

  6. Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John,

  7. although Jesus himself did not baptize but only his disciples,

  8. he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.

  9. And he had to pass through Samaria.

  10. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

  11. Jacob's well was there.

  12. So Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well.

  13. It was about the sixth hour.

  14. A woman from Samaria came to draw water.

  15. Jesus said to her, give me a drink.

  16. For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

  17. The Samaritan woman said to him, how is it that you, a Jew, ask me for a drink, since I'm a Samaritan woman?

  18. For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  19. Jesus answered her, if you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you, give me a drink, you would have asked him,

  20. and he would have given you living water.

  21. The woman said to him, sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep.

  22. Where do you get that living water?

  23. Are you greater than our father Jacob?

  24. He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and all his livestock.

  25. Jesus said to her, everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again.

  26. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

  27. The woman said to him, sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.

  28. Jesus said to her, go, call your husband and come here.

  29. The woman answered him, I have no husband.

  30. Jesus said to her, you are right in saying I have no husband, for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband.

  31. What you have said is true.

  32. The woman said to him, sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

  33. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.

  34. Jesus said to her, woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

  35. You worship what you do not know.

  36. We worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

  37. But the hour is coming and is now here when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.

  38. For the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

  39. God is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

  40. The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming, he who is called Christ.

  41. When he comes, he will tell us all things.

  42. Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am he.

  43. Just then his disciples came back.

  44. They marveled that he was talking with a woman.

  45. But no one said, what do you seek or why are you talking with her?

  46. So the woman left her water jar and went away into the town and said to the people,

  47. Come, see a man who told me all about what I ever did.

  48. Can this be the Christ?

  49. They went out of the town and were coming to him.

  50. Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, saying, Rabbi, eat.

  51. But he said to them, I have food to eat that you do not know about.

  52. So the disciples said to one another, has anyone brought him something to eat?

  53. Jesus said to them, my food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

  54. Do you not say there are yet four months, then comes the harvest?

  55. Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes and see that the fields are white for harvest.

  56. Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life,

  57. so that the sower and the reaper might rejoice together.

  58. For here the saying holds true, one sows and another reaps.

  59. I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor.

  60. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.

  61. Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony.

  62. He told me all that I ever did.

  63. So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.

  64. And many more believed because of his word.

  65. They said to the woman, it is no longer because of what you said that we believe,

  66. for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.

  67. And this is the word of God.

  68. Thanks be to God.

  69. You may be seated.

  70. Let's pray.

  71. Our gracious God, we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from your mouth.

  72. Please make us hungry now for your heavenly food,

  73. that you may nourish us again today, Lord,

  74. in the way of eternal life made possible through Jesus Christ, who is the bread of heaven.

  75. Amen.

  76. Cause us, Lord, to behold the heavenliness of Jesus Christ, who came to save his bride, the church.

  77. Amen.

  78. Well, when it comes to the big wedding day, the groom has one mission.

  79. You know what that is?

  80. It's to get his bride.

  81. That's what the groom has to get.

  82. And you'd be surprised how many men have messed up the very few requirements on the wedding day.

  83. You have to be there at the right time.

  84. You have to show up on the right day.

  85. And you have to marry the right bride.

  86. Well, the Bible says in Genesis 2,

  87. Therefore a man will leave his father and mother and hold fast or cling to his wife,

  88. and they shall become one flesh.

  89. The picture of a wedding is really mysterious.

  90. But this is exactly what John the Baptist said Christ is coming to do.

  91. So wedding is really given as a sign.

  92. It's showing us that there will be a union.

  93. Through the flesh of Jesus Christ, God himself who took on flesh,

  94. he will be made one with his bride.

  95. We saw last time how, in the words of John the Baptizer,

  96. Jesus is the groom from heaven.

  97. And this heavenly groom, number one, cares about purity.

  98. Remember, he was baptizing where there were waters,

  99. and he was cleansing those who believed by the Spirit.

  100. He cares about purity.

  101. Number two, he has an identifiable groomsman.

  102. And John the Baptizer is one of those groomsmen who points to Christ,

  103. who bears witness and stands for him.

  104. Number three, the heavenly groom attracts his bride.

  105. They heard the sweet voice of the groom,

  106. and all the people were going to Christ.

  107. Number four, through the work of Christ,

  108. there is an exchanging of seals between the son as the groom

  109. and his church, the bride.

  110. Jesus sets his seal upon the believer.

  111. It's the Holy Spirit put in you the seal of God on your life.

  112. And then Jesus commands his believers to set your seal to this,

  113. that God is true.

  114. Well, today we will see now the mission of this heavenly groom.

  115. And he gets it perfectly right.

  116. He accomplishes his mission.

  117. He shows up on the right day at the right time.

  118. And he does get the right bride.

  119. However, if we're reading this correctly,

  120. we should be shocked at what this reveals to us about his bride.

  121. His bride, you could say, is the most unlikely bride in the history of humanity.

  122. So let's begin by looking at verses 1, 2, and 3

  123. to set our context for today's wedding picture.

  124. Verses 1, 2, and 3, we read that this heavenly groom has a mission.

  125. The Pharisees see that he's getting too much attention,

  126. more than John the baptizer even,

  127. so he's becoming a big threat down in the southern tribes in Judea.

  128. And his mission requires now that he leave that area.

  129. And the Holy Spirit will guide him to the right place,

  130. the right time,

  131. to meet the one the Father had prepared for him.

  132. And we're going to see, look at verse 6,

  133. that this meeting will take place between Jesus

  134. and the representative bride

  135. at a place of significance.

  136. Look at verse 6.

  137. We're told that Jacob's well was there.

  138. And you'll remember the patriarchs,

  139. the promise that to Abraham, to your seed,

  140. will come salvation,

  141. not just for you, but for all the nations.

  142. So Abraham's got his eye on his physical seed, Isaac.

  143. Well, Isaac, he gets his bride

  144. through God bringing the right bride to the well.

  145. And then Jacob, how does he meet his bride for the first time?

  146. Jacob meets his wife, his bride, at the well also.

  147. So when we're told that Jesus has been traveling,

  148. he sits down by this well,

  149. we're building anticipation.

  150. We should know something good is coming.

  151. In the attachment to Jacob,

  152. okay, this is where brides meet their groom.

  153. Could it be that the promised seed of Abraham

  154. would meet his representative bride at this well?

  155. And if so, what type of bride could possibly deserve

  156. such a heavenly groom?

  157. The world knows this.

  158. The world knows that if you're Prince Ali,

  159. glory is he.

  160. He's going to come in on the parade

  161. and there better be a princess worthy of such a prince, right?

  162. That's what the world thinks.

  163. But Jesus shows, look, this heavenly prince,

  164. the king of glory himself,

  165. takes on flesh.

  166. Here's a portrait of his bride.

  167. So when we walk through two observations

  168. on this biblical portrait we have

  169. of the most unlikely bride.

  170. Number one,

  171. the bride was from a corrupted line.

  172. Her bloodline was corrupted.

  173. If his was heavenly and he's the promised seed from Abraham,

  174. promised seed all the way from Eve

  175. that Satan's been trying to destroy at every opportunity,

  176. hers could not be more twisted and broken and corrupted.

  177. Look at verse 7.

  178. This woman was from Samaria.

  179. Samaria.

  180. See, Samaria, that's the land of the ten northern tribes.

  181. And you remember how all of Israel,

  182. the twelve tribes, got taken into exile.

  183. But Israel, the first ten tribes,

  184. the northern tribes, they fell much sooner.

  185. They barely had a shot.

  186. When Joshua brought them into the land,

  187. they were already intermarrying

  188. and taking on the idols of the people that lived there.

  189. They never were devoted to the Lord.

  190. And so when the Lord banished them from the land,

  191. the Assyrians then took other people groups

  192. from other regions that they had conquered.

  193. And it was a brilliant military tactic.

  194. It was to intermingle them.

  195. They can't get organized.

  196. They can't have any sense of identity.

  197. And so they sent these other people groups,

  198. forced them to move and live in this region

  199. that's now called Samaria.

  200. So now, even after the exile from Assyria,

  201. when the people come back into the northern tribes,

  202. they are intermarrying and the idolatry never stopped.

  203. Not for one moment.

  204. And the people of the south had tried to help them

  205. even build their own temple further north

  206. because they didn't like the power struggle

  207. of having to travel all the way down to Jerusalem.

  208. They were so proud and hostile that they refused that help.

  209. Civil war broke out at different points

  210. between Samaritans and the rest of the nation of Israel,

  211. the Jews, especially in the south closer to Jerusalem.

  212. And Israelites would not even share a vessel.

  213. You would never sit down for a meal.

  214. You'd never break bread or use the same utensils or plate

  215. that a Samaritan has used.

  216. They were considered defiled, impure.

  217. And don't you dare intermingle

  218. because you'll be going down that slippery slope.

  219. That was the caution and the warning in 2 Chronicles 20, 13.

  220. They had enticed God's people and the inhabitants of Jerusalem into whoredom.

  221. Look at verse 9.

  222. This is so shocking that that's the reaction we get from the Samaritan woman.

  223. She said to Jesus,

  224. How is it that you, a Jew, ask me for a drink, a woman of Samaria?

  225. For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  226. So the portrait of the most unlikely bride is that her bloodline is corrupted.

  227. Number two, this bride was further corrupted by her own sin.

  228. So you picture the most defiled region in all of the promised land.

  229. That's Samaria, hands down.

  230. Easy decision there.

  231. And you picture the most corrupted person within Samaria.

  232. And it's this woman who shows up to the well.

  233. Look at verse 6.

  234. How do we know so much about her?

  235. Verse 6 says,

  236. What time of day was it?

  237. It was about the sixth hour.

  238. And the way of counting time is you start counting the first hour is the first hour after the sun comes up.

  239. So the sixth hour puts you right at high noon.

  240. It's the hottest time of day.

  241. And it was custom in that time to never go to get water to the well alone.

  242. So you read these accounts with Jacob, with Isaac.

  243. I mean, that's where you could easily have robbers and bullies, you know, take stuff.

  244. So you'd never send anyone alone to the well.

  245. You'd go as a group and much less a woman to go alone.

  246. And because it's so hot, it's a long trip carrying the heavy weight of the water.

  247. You would want to be going as a group in the cool of the day, beginning of the day or at the end of the day.

  248. And here, high noon, hot sun, so hot that Jesus is weary and his disciples are fatigued and hungry.

  249. And here comes a woman all alone.

  250. She's isolated.

  251. No one wants to be seen with her, associated with her.

  252. Now look at verse 15.

  253. When he first hints that he has something to offer, even a woman like her, look at verse 15.

  254. Her reaction is, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty.

  255. Or, look at the next few words, or have to come here to draw water.

  256. It would be enough of a reason to spare me the social shame, having to walk past everyone in the village.

  257. Everyone kind of skirts away, pretends like they don't see me, and then they gossip behind my back.

  258. I can't stand the social shame anymore.

  259. She was sick of it.

  260. Now Jesus, he does not lower the standard for holiness.

  261. He communicates the law of the holy God.

  262. Look at verse 18.

  263. He's saying, you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband.

  264. He's not saying that to hurt her feelings.

  265. He can handle the truth, and he wants her to know that.

  266. I mean, your temptation, if you're feeling such social shame, is going to be to put some makeup on,

  267. try to present your prettiest version of yourself,

  268. to tell your story in such a way that he might be willing to be kind to you.

  269. And Jesus says, disclose it all.

  270. I know.

  271. And the guy you've got now, I mean, it sounds like a friend.

  272. You know, someone's got a really bad boyfriend or girlfriend,

  273. and their true friends are like, you need to stop this, you know.

  274. This guy's probably the biggest loser of them all.

  275. The man you have now is not your husband.

  276. And he just gets right to the heart.

  277. You know, I know.

  278. See, I think this is so significant,

  279. because this Samaritan fornicator,

  280. she represents unfaithful Israel.

  281. And Israel is a picture of the people of God.

  282. It's a picture of the church.

  283. And until you see yourself as that woman,

  284. you won't see the heavenliness of the groom.

  285. The unlikeliness of the bride,

  286. it reveals and confirms the heavenliness of the groom.

  287. This is otherworldly.

  288. What a gift we have with this story.

  289. See, Israel had been unfaithful to their God.

  290. Their God took them as slaves in Egypt.

  291. He purchased their freedom with mighty acts.

  292. He made a covenant with them.

  293. We read it every Lord's Day.

  294. I will be your God.

  295. You will be my people.

  296. Here's my law.

  297. Here's what pleases me.

  298. And he gives them the Ten Commandments.

  299. But in Jeremiah, a few generations later,

  300. Jeremiah 3, 1 through 3.

  301. Now remember, Jeremiah is preaching to Jerusalem now.

  302. It's gone horribly wrong in the northern tribes.

  303. It's now bad in Jerusalem.

  304. Jeremiah was the prophet at the time

  305. when Daniel was carried away to Babylon.

  306. So it's all going down in the south as well.

  307. And here's the word that the Holy Spirit gave Jeremiah.

  308. And it's a warning to Israel and Judea.

  309. If a man's wife goes from him

  310. and becomes another man's wife,

  311. will he return to her?

  312. In other words, the bride turns her back

  313. on the husband who's loving her,

  314. and she wants to have an affair and cheat.

  315. You would never expect that husband

  316. to have grace and compassion.

  317. I mean, that would be unexpected.

  318. But now look what God says.

  319. He says that land would be greatly polluted

  320. if that's how families conducted themselves.

  321. You, Israel.

  322. You, Jerusalem.

  323. You have played the whore with many lovers.

  324. And would you now return to me, declares the Lord?

  325. See, the bride had corrupted herself even further.

  326. Her bloodline was corrupted.

  327. Her life was corrupted.

  328. And that's exactly the picture of Israel.

  329. Why do we have here this portrait

  330. of the most unlikely bride?

  331. Well, remember, Jesus got out of Judea

  332. because of the Pharisees.

  333. If they were getting so much attention,

  334. they were going to kill him right there.

  335. And he had to fulfill the law.

  336. He had to show us who he's coming to save.

  337. The church is not made up of self-righteous Pharisees.

  338. The true church is made up of people

  339. who view their soul, their standing before God,

  340. like the Samaritan woman.

  341. And really, if we keep reading Isaiah 65 1,

  342. this is exactly how Jesus fulfills this promise.

  343. So Isaiah 65 says,

  344. I was ready to be sought by those who did not ask for me.

  345. I was ready to be found by those who did not seek me.

  346. Jesus finds his bride.

  347. He goes out and seeks her.

  348. And if you have encountered Christ in such a way,

  349. you know when he gave you a new heart.

  350. You know how he comes after you still today.

  351. When you turn to other idols

  352. and your heart starts wondering,

  353. he comes after his bride over and over again

  354. because he is the heavenly groom.

  355. And see, the church also is saved

  356. out of Adam's corrupt line.

  357. At our past Friday Bible study,

  358. we were looking in Romans chapter 5

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  359. and verse 18 through 21.

  360. We read how the trespass of Adam,

  361. the one man, the representative head.

  362. Everyone comes from the bloodline of Adam.

  363. His trespass led to condemnation for all men.

  364. And because we are all now under the curse of Adam,

  365. because of that one man's disobedience,

  366. all were made sinners.

  367. So the church is saved out of Adam's corrupted bloodline.

  368. Number two, every true Christian

  369. is brought under conviction

  370. of how their own sins

  371. have corrupted them even further,

  372. even more than the corruption

  373. that they inherited from Adam.

  374. Romans 5.20 says,

  375. the law came in to increase the trespasses.

  376. So we all are born under Adam's sin

  377. and we have the law of God,

  378. you know, our conscience,

  379. and in the scripture,

  380. it exposes our sin even further.

  381. It multiplies our trespasses before God.

  382. But here's the promise.

  383. As sin reigned in death,

  384. grace also can now reign through righteousness,

  385. leading to eternal life

  386. through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  387. And here's what Paul says in Romans 5,

  388. where sin increased,

  389. grace abounded all the more.

  390. That's what this story tells us.

  391. If sin, if your view of sin is low,

  392. then your view of your need for grace

  393. is going to be in proportion to that.

  394. But where the law comes

  395. and your sin abounds,

  396. you're expanding your view of your own sin,

  397. you realize how much grace

  398. you need from the Lord.

  399. And the more grace you realize

  400. you need from the Lord,

  401. the more glory He gets in your salvation.

  402. The more unlikely the bride,

  403. the more glorious and heavenly is the groom.

  404. That's the promise we have in Christ.

  405. And that's why we can sing the song,

  406. Come, O sinner,

  407. come rejoice.

  408. Mercy fills this place of scorn.

  409. That well and that trip through the village

  410. at high noon was a trip of scorn for the woman.

  411. But Christ died to save His enemies,

  412. that all, all, all from Samaria,

  413. all those who have committed the worst sins

  414. in the most public way,

  415. that all may draw near to Christ

  416. and know His peace.

  417. So that's our portrait

  418. of the most unlikely bride.

  419. And I feel like I could just stop right now.

  420. But I also want to show you

  421. how in this same story,

  422. we have the groom's mission.

  423. I mean, this is the mission,

  424. but it's also a foreshadowing

  425. of His greater mission.

  426. Just like I believe this woman of Samaria

  427. is a representative of the church.

  428. What is the greater mission of Christ

  429. and how is it foreshadowed

  430. in this beautiful encounter?

  431. So I want to show you,

  432. I know you're supposed to only have three main points,

  433. but I got five

  434. because that's how many are in the passage.

  435. I couldn't cut it down.

  436. So five, five ways in which the mission

  437. of the groom is foreshadowed

  438. in the same passage.

  439. Let's read through it one more time

  440. with that lens now.

  441. Number one,

  442. Christ left His Father's throne

  443. to get His bride.

  444. Look at verse four.

  445. We read in verse four

  446. that Jesus underlined those, those words.

  447. He had.

  448. He had to pass through Samaria.

  449. The person of Jesus Christ

  450. in the flesh,

  451. filled with the Holy Spirit.

  452. He was under divine compulsion

  453. to go exactly where the Lord,

  454. His Father was sending Him

  455. to accomplish the will

  456. and the mission of the Lord.

  457. And that's where God would reveal to him

  458. a type or a picture of His bride.

  459. See, in Genesis 29, 10,

  460. Jacob, we're told Jacob left his father's land

  461. and traveled to meet his bride at a well.

  462. And now the greater Jacob,

  463. the greater Israel,

  464. the greater Son of God,

  465. left his father's heavenly kingdom

  466. and traveled to earth

  467. and to the promised land

  468. and to Samaria

  469. and to that well

  470. to meet his representative bride.

  471. Look at verse seven.

  472. A woman from Samaria

  473. came to draw water

  474. and Jesus said to her,

  475. Give me a drink.

  476. Women could not bear witness in a court.

  477. They were considered almost subhuman,

  478. and especially a woman with her reputation.

  479. And knowing that Jews would not share a meal

  480. or let the same utensil that one had used

  481. be used even after it had been washed,

  482. He wants to talk to her.

  483. He's seated.

  484. He wants to greet her

  485. and show her kindness.

  486. And He wants to drink

  487. and let that vessel touch His lips

  488. that she drinks from as well.

  489. Her uncleanness can't contaminate Him.

  490. And you can just picture His eyes

  491. and His smile.

  492. He came to reveal the kindness

  493. and the love of the Father.

  494. He would never treat her as a dirty reject.

  495. And the Samaritan woman,

  496. understandably,

  497. can't even believe what's going on.

  498. She says,

  499. How is this?

  500. But in her loneliness,

  501. when no one else would walk with her

  502. or even be seen with her,

  503. Jesus showed her love.

  504. Number two,

  505. our Lord Jesus Christ

  506. causes this unlikely bride

  507. to desire

  508. what only He can give her.

  509. He causes her to desire that thing.

  510. So she cannot know

  511. the truth of God

  512. unless the Messiah reveals it.

  513. And she knows that.

  514. Look at verse 10.

  515. Jesus says,

  516. If you knew the gift of God,

  517. in other words,

  518. you don't know

  519. and you can't know

  520. the gift of God

  521. unless God reveals this to you.

  522. But if you knew,

  523. and what is the gift

  524. that He's referring to?

  525. He is the gift.

  526. He who it is

  527. that is saying to you,

  528. give me a drink.

  529. If you knew who I am,

  530. you would have asked me

  531. and I would have given you

  532. living water.

  533. Okay, so living water

  534. is significant as well.

  535. The geography of Israel,

  536. according to what I've studied

  537. and learned,

  538. I would love for us

  539. to maybe go there someday

  540. all together in person.

  541. Wouldn't that be amazing?

  542. But it's really similar to Colorado.

  543. And so there are parts

  544. where you'll see, you know,

  545. trees growing up

  546. around the water,

  547. but there are other parts

  548. that are desert

  549. and it's arid.

  550. So you have like a cluster

  551. of trees and shade

  552. and nice air and abundance

  553. and springs and, you know,

  554. and then you go to other places

  555. and you're just in the wilderness.

  556. That's how Israel is.

  557. And so the fact

  558. that they're having to travel

  559. quite a ways

  560. to come to a well,

  561. to take the water,

  562. carry it back,

  563. this shows we're

  564. in a more arid place.

  565. Now,

  566. May has been to Israel

  567. three times

  568. and she said

  569. that in Jerusalem,

  570. old Jerusalem,

  571. they've excavated

  572. and discovered

  573. a well

  574. that is

  575. living water.

  576. And what that means

  577. is that

  578. deep down

  579. in old Jerusalem,

  580. King David,

  581. you know,

  582. when he took over

  583. this Jebusite fort,

  584. this fortified

  585. walled city,

  586. down below

  587. is a spring.

  588. So if it got surrounded

  589. on the outside

  590. in a siege,

  591. they would never

  592. run out of water.

  593. And they said

  594. she got to see it

  595. and down below

  596. it's gushing forth.

  597. So you come out

  598. of these desert areas

  599. but in Jerusalem

  600. from where

  601. the Messiah

  602. and the priest,

  603. from where that will rule,

  604. comes these gushing

  605. living waters.

  606. Remember,

  607. Jesus just traveled up

  608. from Judea

  609. and it's like

  610. he's bringing

  611. that imagery

  612. that's in his mind.

  613. Remember,

  614. on his way

  615. he was baptizing

  616. where there was

  617. an abundance of waters

  618. and the spirits working

  619. and Jesus wasn't

  620. even the one doing it,

  621. it was the disciples

  622. baptizing.

  623. Because the power

  624. of God

  625. is flowing

  626. through Jesus

  627. and he's calling

  628. people to repentance

  629. and that power

  630. of the Holy Spirit

  631. is working

  632. and that's the image

  633. of living waters.

  634. It's fulfilled

  635. in Jerusalem,

  636. you know,

  637. the picture

  638. of the throne

  639. of God

  640. where the office

  641. of priest and king

  642. is joined together

  643. in one person,

  644. the seed of David

  645. and now Jesus

  646. is bringing

  647. these living waters

  648. to the dry area

  649. in Samaria.

  650. You only have

  651. three options

  652. for water.

  653. One is a well

  654. and that's like

  655. pulling water up

  656. from the dirt

  657. but it's stagnant water,

  658. it's sitting there.

  659. The other is even worse.

  660. We have no hope of water,

  661. you're going to basically

  662. try to collect water.

  663. Anywhere that it rains,

  664. you're going to collect it

  665. onto a little pool

  666. but it gets stale quick.

  667. It's way worse quality

  668. than a well.

  669. So he's telling her,

  670. don't worry,

  671. it's not going to get worse,

  672. it's going to be

  673. living waters

  674. for you.

  675. Now you picture,

  676. you hear these words,

  677. it's moving,

  678. it's living,

  679. it's energizing,

  680. it's life-giving.

  681. That's the image

  682. of living waters

  683. springing up.

  684. I couldn't help

  685. but think of how

  686. the Word of God

  687. has those same descriptions.

  688. The Word of God

  689. is living,

  690. it's active

  691. and it brings life.

  692. It does not return void.

  693. It flows over the desert

  694. and new life springs up

  695. and there's a great abundance

  696. and harvest.

  697. Now look at verse 14.

  698. Whoever drinks of the water

  699. that I will give him

  700. will never thirst again.

  701. The water that I will give him

  702. will soon become

  703. in him

  704. spring of water

  705. welling up

  706. to eternal life.

  707. Do you remember

  708. when Jesus first used

  709. the phrase eternal life?

  710. And it translated

  711. from the Greek

  712. it really means

  713. you're going to have now

  714. the life that belongs

  715. to the age to come.

  716. It's the life of the age to come

  717. now put inside of you.

  718. That's how he's describing

  719. the work of the Holy Spirit.

  720. But remember Christ

  721. had to cause

  722. this unlikely bride

  723. to desire

  724. that which only

  725. he could give.

  726. He said if you only knew.

  727. She couldn't know.

  728. She was thirsty

  729. in her soul

  730. but she had been

  731. trying to fill

  732. that thirst

  733. of her soul

  734. with all kinds

  735. of different things

  736. with man

  737. after man

  738. and none of those men

  739. could satisfy.

  740. And that's the prayer

  741. we pray.

  742. You have loved ones

  743. that don't know the Lord

  744. you need to pray

  745. that God will give them

  746. a desire

  747. for the thing

  748. that only he can give

  749. which is the spirit

  750. inside of them.

  751. Cambridge Declaration

  752. on the Doctrines of Grace

  753. states what the Bible

  754. teaches this way.

  755. Human beings

  756. are born

  757. spiritually dead.

  758. That's the curse of Adam.

  759. And they are incapable

  760. even of cooperating

  761. with regenerating grace.

  762. It's Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  763. You are dead

  764. until the spirit

  765. breathes life in you.

  766. That's what Jesus

  767. told Nicodemus

  768. you must be born again.

  769. You must be regenerated.

  770. And Christ had to make her

  771. realize that there was

  772. a deeper thirst

  773. in her soul.

  774. A thirst for God.

  775. And that's exactly

  776. what she has in mind.

  777. She responds by saying

  778. well should we worship

  779. on this mountain

  780. that you guys

  781. didn't help us build

  782. or should we go

  783. all the way to Jerusalem?

  784. She's bringing up

  785. their political

  786. their religious

  787. their cultural stuff.

  788. And Jesus knows

  789. okay her heart

  790. her heart is thirsty

  791. for God.

  792. Because worship

  793. is really about communion.

  794. And her own people

  795. have rejected her.

  796. And I'm going to

  797. promise her now

  798. that she can have

  799. communion.

  800. She can have acceptance

  801. with God himself.

  802. Through Christ

  803. her soul's true longing

  804. that he awakened in her

  805. would be satisfied.

  806. And if you remember

  807. the end of chapter 3

  808. John the baptizer

  809. I think he's setting

  810. the stage for this

  811. encounter.

  812. And he said

  813. that Jesus will give

  814. the spirit without measure.

  815. It's like how do you

  816. even quantify how much

  817. water is available

  818. from a spring?

  819. It never stops.

  820. It never stops bubbling up.

  821. It's the spirit

  822. is the same way.

  823. It's without measure.

  824. It's in abundance.

  825. And God will

  826. well up in your soul

  827. a spring of living water

  828. of the life of the age

  829. to come

  830. once he has caused you

  831. to desire it

  832. which only he can do.

  833. And ask him for that.

  834. Number three

  835. Christ makes the

  836. impossible wedding

  837. come true.

  838. I don't know

  839. that this woman

  840. of Samaria

  841. would have ever

  842. dreamed

  843. that she could be

  844. part of the church

  845. of the Messiah.

  846. She could be

  847. the bride.

  848. She could belong

  849. to this kingdom.

  850. But if she was

  851. in middle school

  852. and had a crush

  853. I mean

  854. it would be like

  855. the most impossible

  856. wedding

  857. she could have

  858. dreamed of.

  859. look at verse 21

  860. Jesus tells her

  861. you

  862. yes you

  863. Samaritan woman

  864. the most unlikely

  865. of them all

  866. you will worship

  867. the father.

  868. He's hinting

  869. and he's foreshadowing

  870. how because of his

  871. life and work

  872. for her

  873. look at verse 22

  874. through him

  875. salvation

  876. it is from the Jews

  877. he will fulfill

  878. the law

  879. given to the Jews

  880. but it won't

  881. stop with the Jews

  882. it will be fulfilled

  883. in him

  884. the promised son

  885. of David

  886. the king of Judah

  887. who will unite

  888. all Israel

  889. all 12 tribes

  890. once again

  891. and he will call

  892. into that number

  893. all the Gentiles

  894. all the nations

  895. of the world

  896. like he promised

  897. to do to Abraham

  898. and all the way

  899. back with Eve.

  900. Verse 23

  901. the hour

  902. is now here

  903. it's here

  904. it's not

  905. something you need

  906. to only long for

  907. you can experience

  908. this now

  909. it's here for you

  910. true worshipers

  911. will worship

  912. the father

  913. in spirit

  914. and truth

  915. for the father

  916. is seeking

  917. such people

  918. to worship

  919. him

  920. verse 24

  921. God is spirit

  922. and those who

  923. worship him

  924. must worship

  925. in spirit

  926. and in truth

  927. all of the

  928. Samaritan woman

  929. all of her reactions

  930. up to this point

  931. have been

  932. maybe sarcastic

  933. you know

  934. pushing it off

  935. changing the subject

  936. she's tough

  937. she does not

  938. know about all this

  939. and what he just

  940. said here

  941. that God

  942. is spirit

  943. and true

  944. worshipers

  945. will worship

  946. in spirit

  947. and in truth

  948. this is beyond

  949. comprehension

  950. I think she'll be

  951. speechless by this

  952. point

  953. and what he's

  954. about to tell her

  955. next is really

  956. the climax

  957. of this whole

  958. passage

  959. verse 25

  960. she says

  961. the Messiah

  962. who is called

  963. Christ

  964. she knows

  965. he's the one

  966. the only one

  967. who could unveil

  968. these mysteries

  969. that you're

  970. talking about

  971. and who is

  972. the promised

  973. Messiah

  974. who is the

  975. Christ

  976. look at verse

  977. 26

  978. here's the

  979. peak

  980. the whole

  981. peak

  982. of this

  983. discourse

  984. Jesus said

  985. I who speak

  986. to you

  987. am he

  988. in the Greek

  989. the order of

  990. these words

  991. is like this

  992. Jesus said

  993. I am

  994. who is speaking

  995. to you

  996. in verse 27

  997. right then

  998. the disciples

  999. show up

  1000. you see how

  1001. it brings you

  1002. to that climate

  1003. and she's

  1004. it's above

  1005. comprehension

  1006. it's the spirit

  1007. working in a way

  1008. in her soul

  1009. and it's the hunger

  1010. and the thirst

  1011. of her soul

  1012. there's no more

  1013. words for it

  1014. number four

  1015. because of his

  1016. sacrifice

  1017. Jesus Christ

  1018. the heavenly groom

  1019. gets his bride

  1020. see how it's

  1021. the sacrifice

  1022. of the groom

  1023. that gets him

  1024. his bride

  1025. and how is that

  1026. foreshadowed here

  1027. well in this story

  1028. it's at his

  1029. weakest point

  1030. according to his

  1031. human nature

  1032. in his weakness

  1033. he is powerfully

  1034. working spiritually

  1035. so when

  1036. Jesus Christ

  1037. one person

  1038. according to his

  1039. divine nature

  1040. is working

  1041. powerfully

  1042. he's regenerating

  1043. he's causing

  1044. her eyes to be

  1045. open

  1046. he's meeting

  1047. the longing

  1048. of her soul

  1049. spiritually

  1050. according to his

  1051. divine nature

  1052. he's saving

  1053. this woman

  1054. now according

  1055. to his physical

  1056. nature

  1057. he's weak

  1058. fully God

  1059. fully human

  1060. I want to show

  1061. you how Christ's

  1062. sacrificial weakness

  1063. is foreshadowed

  1064. here

  1065. in his human

  1066. nature

  1067. look at verse 27

  1068. I am

  1069. who speaks

  1070. to you

  1071. just then

  1072. his disciples

  1073. came back

  1074. and they marveled

  1075. that he was

  1076. talking with a

  1077. woman

  1078. this is so

  1079. unlikely

  1080. but no one

  1081. said anything

  1082. so maybe

  1083. they read the

  1084. moment as well

  1085. something powerful

  1086. just happened

  1087. spiritually

  1088. Christ revealed

  1089. who he is

  1090. to her

  1091. they don't

  1092. say anything

  1093. verse 6

  1094. we told

  1095. way back

  1096. in verse 6

  1097. we're told

  1098. that Jesus

  1099. wearied as he

  1100. was from his

  1101. journey

  1102. was sitting

  1103. beside the

  1104. well

  1105. and it was

  1106. about the

  1107. sixth hour

  1108. so he's been

  1109. traveling

  1110. it's very hot

  1111. he is thirsty

  1112. the disciples

  1113. are hungry

  1114. and thirsty

  1115. we never read

  1116. here that she

  1117. gave him water

  1118. in fact it says

  1119. she just left

  1120. her jar

  1121. and ran back

  1122. to her village

  1123. and the

  1124. disciples

  1125. says look

  1126. at verse 8

  1127. they had gone

  1128. into the city

  1129. to buy food

  1130. and now look

  1131. at verse 31

  1132. the disciples

  1133. were urging

  1134. him

  1135. urging him

  1136. come on

  1137. rabbi

  1138. teacher

  1139. eat

  1140. look at verse

  1141. 32

  1142. they said

  1143. he said

  1144. to them

  1145. I have

  1146. food to eat

  1147. that you

  1148. do not

  1149. know

  1150. about

  1151. see how

  1152. physically

  1153. he's not

  1154. getting water

  1155. even though

  1156. he's thirsty

  1157. he's not

  1158. taking food

  1159. even though

  1160. physically

  1161. he's hungry

  1162. when Christ

  1163. was most

  1164. weak

  1165. physically

  1166. he was

  1167. working

  1168. most

  1169. mightily

  1170. spiritually

  1171. reminds me

  1172. of the hymn

  1173. see from

  1174. his head

  1175. his hands

  1176. his feet

  1177. sorrow

  1178. and love

  1179. flow

  1180. mingled

  1181. down

  1182. did

  1183. air

  1184. such

  1185. love

  1186. and sorrow

  1187. meet

  1188. or

  1189. thorns

  1190. compose

  1191. so rich

  1192. a crown

  1193. but Christ

  1194. was satisfied

  1195. spiritually

  1196. he was

  1197. fed

  1198. in his

  1199. soul

  1200. he was

  1201. filled

  1202. he was

  1203. strengthened

  1204. enlivened

  1205. pumped up

  1206. he's

  1207. the groom

  1208. who's

  1209. getting

  1210. his

  1211. bride

  1212. and he

  1213. looks up

  1214. to

  1215. Samaria

  1216. and he

  1217. says

  1218. there's

  1219. more

  1220. that's

  1221. what's

  1222. feeding

  1223. his

  1224. soul

  1225. verse

  1226. 34

  1227. Jesus

  1228. says

  1229. my

  1230. food

  1231. is to

  1232. do

  1233. the

  1234. will

  1235. of

  1236. him

  1237. who

  1238. sent

  1239. me

  1240. and

  1241. to

  1242. accomplish

  1243. that

  1244. work

  1245. this

  1246. is so

  1247. important

  1248. Christ

  1249. did

  1250. not

  1251. die

  1252. on the

  1253. cross

  1254. to

  1255. hypothetically

  1256. save

  1257. anyone

  1258. he

  1259. came

  1260. to

  1261. accomplish

  1262. the

  1263. mission

  1264. the

  1265. father

  1266. gave

  1267. him

  1268. look

  1269. that's

  1270. what

  1271. it

  1272. says

  1273. right

  1274. there

  1275. verse

  1276. 36

  1277. 35

  1278. 34

  1279. that's

  1280. exactly

  1281. what

  1282. he's

  1283. saying

  1284. I

  1285. came

  1286. to

  1287. accomplish

  1288. the

  1289. will

  1290. of

  1291. my

  1292. father

  1293. and

  1294. this

  1295. feeds

  1296. me

  1297. this

  1298. is

  1299. my

  1300. food

  1301. Christ

  1302. was

  1303. full

  1304. from

  1305. obeying

  1306. his

  1307. father's

  1308. mission

  1309. to

  1310. save

  1311. the

  1312. least

  1313. likely

  1314. and

  1315. there

  1316. are

  1317. more

  1318. verse

  1319. 35

  1320. I

  1321. tell

  1322. you

  1323. lift

  1324. up

  1325. your

  1326. eyes

  1327. see

  1328. that

  1329. the

  1330. fields

  1331. are

  1332. white

  1333. for

  1334. harvest

  1335. and

  1336. where

  1337. is

  1338. Christ

  1339. looking

  1340. and

  1341. where

  1342. is

  1343. he

  1344. pointing

  1345. the

  1346. eyes

  1347. of

  1348. his

  1349. disciples

  1350. to

  1351. the

  1352. Samaritans

  1353. it's

  1354. to

  1355. these

  1356. unclean

  1357. people

  1358. that's

  1359. where

  1360. the

  1361. fields

  1362. are

  1363. ripe

  1364. now

  1365. see

  1366. the

  1367. Samaritans

  1368. are being

  1369. prepared

  1370. by

  1371. God

  1372. to

  1373. repent

  1374. of

  1375. sin

  1376. to

  1377. believe

  1378. in

  1379. Christ

  1380. as

  1381. the

  1382. promised

  1383. Savior

  1384. to

  1385. just

  1386. like

  1387. we're

  1388. doing

  1389. in

  1390. Judea

  1391. where

  1392. you're

  1393. baptizing

  1394. many

  1395. as

  1396. God

  1397. brought

  1398. them

  1399. that's

  1400. what is

  1401. my

  1402. food

  1403. is to

  1404. see

  1405. the

  1406. kingdom

  1407. of

  1408. heaven

  1409. coming

  1410. through

  1411. my

  1412. work

  1413. now

  1414. look at

  1415. verse

  1416. 36

  1417. he's

  1418. giving

  1419. us

  1420. a

  1421. glimpse

  1422. into

  1423. the

  1424. inner

  1425. relationship

  1426. between

  1427. Father

  1428. Son

  1429. and

  1430. Holy

  1431. Spirit

  1432. look at

  1433. verse

  1434. 36

  1435. already

  1436. the

  1437. one

  1438. who

  1439. reaps

  1440. is

  1441. receiving

  1442. wages

  1443. and

  1444. gathering

  1445. fruit

  1446. for

  1447. eternal

  1448. life

  1449. see

  1450. Christ

  1451. is

  1452. looking

  1453. forward

  1454. to

  1455. the

  1456. age

  1457. to

  1458. come

  1459. also

  1460. this

  1461. is

  1462. a

  1463. soul

  1464. that

  1465. will

  1466. be

  1467. united

  1468. with

  1469. him

  1470. for

  1471. eternity

  1472. this

  1473. unlikely

  1474. Samaritan

  1475. believer

  1476. was

  1477. Christ's

  1478. reward

  1479. for

  1480. the

  1481. age

  1482. to

  1483. come

  1484. and

  1485. Jesus

  1486. says

  1487. so

  1488. now

  1489. sower

  1490. and

  1491. reaper

  1492. may

  1493. rejoice

  1494. together

  1495. the

  1496. Samaritan

  1497. woman

  1498. having

  1499. her

  1500. eyes

  1501. open

  1502. to

  1503. behold

  1504. that

  1505. Jesus

  1506. is

  1507. the

  1508. Messiah

  1509. he

  1510. is

  1511. God

  1512. come

  1513. to

  1514. save

  1515. her

  1516. this

  1517. is

  1518. the

  1519. reward

  1520. of

  1521. Christ

  1522. reaping

  1523. what

  1524. the

  1525. Holy

  1526. Spirit

  1527. had

  1528. sown

  1529. and

  1530. prepared

  1531. this

  1532. fills

  1533. him

  1534. this

  1535. is

  1536. his

  1537. joy

  1538. the

  1539. joy

  1540. of

  1541. God

  1542. the

  1543. Father

  1544. Son

  1545. and

  1546. Spirit

  1547. is

  1548. to

  1549. see

  1550. the

  1551. lost

  1552. coming

  1553. to

  1554. him

  1555. through

  1556. Christ

  1557. and

  1558. he

  1559. says

  1560. you

  1561. get

  1562. to

  1563. be

  1564. part

  1565. of

  1566. this

  1567. too

  1568. disciples

  1569. and

  1570. you

  1571. get

  1572. to

  1573. be

  1574. part

  1575. of

  1576. this

  1577. church

  1578. I

  1579. send

  1580. you

  1581. to

  1582. reap

  1583. he

  1584. says

  1585. as

  1586. the

  1587. Father

  1588. sent

  1589. the

  1590. Son

  1591. so

  1592. I

  1593. send

  1594. you

  1595. you

  1596. go

  1597. out

  1598. and

  1599. reap

  1600. that

  1601. for

  1602. which

  1603. you

  1604. did

  1605. not

  1606. labor

  1607. that's

  1608. why

  1609. living

  1610. on

  1611. mission

  1612. within

  1613. Christ's

  1614. kingdom

  1615. it's

  1616. a joy

  1617. it's

  1618. not

  1619. labor

  1620. he

  1621. does

  1622. all

  1623. the

  1624. heavy

  1625. lifting

  1626. it's

  1627. his

  1628. spirit

  1629. who's

  1630. working

  1631. and

  1632. we

  1633. get

  1634. to

  1635. see

  1636. him

  1637. draw

  1638. more

  1639. and

  1640. more

  1641. to

  1642. the

  1643. banquet

  1644. feast

  1645. it's

  1646. the

  1647. spirit's

  1648. labor

  1649. through

  1650. his

  1651. people

  1652. so

  1653. here

  1654. Christ

  1655. has

  1656. blessed

  1657. this

  1658. most

  1659. unclean

  1660. and

  1661. undeserving

  1662. sinner

  1663. he

  1664. shows

  1665. us

  1666. that

  1667. the

  1668. more

  1669. grace

  1670. that

  1671. she

  1672. received

  1673. the

  1674. more

  1675. he

  1676. is

  1677. glorified

  1678. the

  1679. more

  1680. unlikely

  1681. is

  1682. this

  1683. bride

  1684. the

  1685. more

  1686. heavenly

  1687. we

  1688. see

  1689. the

  1690. groom

  1691. to

  1692. be

  1693. I

  1694. can't

  1695. skip

  1696. over

  1697. number

  1698. five

  1699. which

  1700. is

  1701. Christ

  1702. is

  1703. undeniable

  1704. by

  1705. those

  1706. who

  1707. thirst

  1708. to

  1709. see

  1710. him

  1711. remember

  1712. he's

  1713. the

  1714. one

  1715. who

  1716. puts

  1717. the

  1718. desire

  1719. for

  1720. that

  1721. water

  1722. in

  1723. you

  1724. he

  1725. puts

  1726. the

  1727. desire

  1728. of

  1729. your

  1730. soul

  1731. for

  1732. Christ

  1733. himself

  1734. and

  1735. when

  1736. he

  1737. gives

  1738. you

  1739. that

  1740. desire

  1741. he's

  1742. undeniable

  1743. we

  1744. we

  1745. can't

  1746. persuade

  1747. anyone

  1748. to

  1749. open

  1750. their

  1751. spiritual

  1752. eyes

  1753. but

  1754. when

  1755. God

  1756. puts

  1757. the

  1758. desire

  1759. for

  1760. Christ

  1761. in

  1762. the

  1763. soul

  1764. regenerates

  1765. they

  1766. can't

  1767. help

  1768. but

  1769. acknowledge

  1770. him

  1771. yes

  1772. this

  1773. is

  1774. Christ

  1775. my

  1776. Lord

  1777. and

  1778. my

  1779. God

  1780. look

  1781. at

  1782. verse

  1783. 29

  1784. when

  1785. the

  1786. Lord

  1787. opened

  1788. her

  1789. eyes

  1790. what

  1791. did

  1792. the

  1793. Samaritan

  1794. woman

  1795. do

  1796. she

  1797. ran

  1798. back

  1799. to

  1800. her

  1801. village

  1802. and

  1803. she

  1804. only

  1805. says

  1806. two

  1807. words

  1808. what

  1809. are

  1810. they

  1811. come

  1812. see

  1813. that

  1814. reminds

  1815. you of

  1816. John

    John 1 chapter mention

  1817. chapter

  1818. 1

  1819. that's

  1820. exactly

  1821. what

  1822. the

  1823. disciples

  1824. said

  1825. come

  1826. see

  1827. we

  1828. found

  1829. him

  1830. it's

  1831. Christ

  1832. it's

  1833. the

  1834. promised

  1835. Messiah

  1836. now

  1837. look

  1838. at

  1839. verse

  1840. 40

  1841. the

  1842. Samaritans

  1843. came

  1844. to

  1845. him

  1846. and

  1847. asked

  1848. him

  1849. to

  1850. stay

  1851. with

  1852. them

  1853. that's

  1854. what

  1855. the

  1857. did

  1858. remember

  1859. where

  1860. are

  1861. you

  1863. can

  1864. we

  1865. be

  1868. and

  1869. he

  1870. stayed

  1871. there

  1872. two

  1873. days

  1874. not

  1875. only

  1876. will

  1877. he

  1882. well

  1883. and

  1884. share

  1885. a

  1886. vessel

  1887. he'll

  1888. live

  1889. with

  1890. them

  1891. he'll

  1892. dwell

  1893. with

  1894. these

  1895. Samaritans

  1896. he's

  1897. not

  1901. polluting

  1902. him

  1903. verse

  1904. 41

  1905. and

  1906. many

  1907. more

  1908. believed

  1909. because

  1921. heard

  1922. for

  1923. ourselves

  1924. and

  1925. we

  1926. know

  1927. that

  1928. this

  1929. is

  1930. indeed

  1931. the

  1932. savior

  1933. of

  1934. the

  1935. world

  1936. see

  1937. Christ

  1938. only

  1939. has

  1940. one

  1941. bride

  1942. and

  1943. it's

  1944. all

  1945. those

  1946. who

  1947. know

  1948. they

  1949. are

  1950. undeserving

  1951. who

  1952. know

  1953. they

  1954. have

  1955. been

  1956. adulterous

  1957. in

  1958. heart

  1959. but

  1960. who

  1961. have

  1962. heard

  1963. his

  1964. joy

  1965. evoking

  1966. voice

  1967. that's

  1968. how

  1969. John

  1970. the

  1971. Baptist

  1972. described

  1973. him

  1974. I

  1975. hear

  1976. his

  1977. voice

  1978. and

  1979. it

  1980. brings

  1981. me

  1982. joy

  1983. they

  1984. get

  1985. to

  1986. be

  1987. with

  1988. the

  1989. one

  1990. when

  1991. they

  1992. see

  1993. his

  1994. heaven

  1995. in

  1996. this

  1997. they

  1998. see

  1999. he's

  2000. the

  2001. one

  2002. who

  2003. makes

  2004. the

  2005. way

  2006. for

  2007. me

  2008. to

  2009. have

  2010. communion

  2011. with

  2012. God

  2013. when

  2014. you

  2015. long

  2016. for

  2017. him

  2018. to

  2019. increase

  2020. more

  2021. and

  2022. more

  2023. in

  2024. your

  2025. life

  2026. take

  2027. over

  2028. more

  2029. and

  2030. more

  2031. of

  2032. your

  2033. heart

  2034. and

  2035. that

  2036. you

  2037. decrease

  2038. in

  2039. his

  2040. glory

  2041. that's

  2042. the

  2043. true

  2044. bride

  2045. it's

  2046. those

  2047. who

  2048. are

  2049. satisfied

  2050. by

  2051. Christ

  2052. alone

  2053. and

  2054. who

  2055. are

  2056. being

  2057. cleansed

  2058. by

  2059. the

  2060. Holy

  2061. Spirit

  2062. they've

  2063. been

  2064. regenerated

  2065. in

  2066. those

  2067. living

  2068. waters

  2069. of

  2070. the

  2071. Holy

  2072. Spirit

  2073. that's

  2074. the

  2075. promise

  2076. of

  2077. sanctification

  2078. they will

  2079. not

  2080. stop

  2081. flowing

  2082. they will

  2083. abound

  2084. until

  2085. your

  2086. final

  2087. breath

  2088. so

  2089. we

  2090. affirm

  2091. with

  2092. the

  2093. Cambridge

  2094. Declaration

  2095. again

  2096. on

  2097. the

  2098. doctrine

  2099. of

  2100. grace

  2101. that

  2102. God's

  2103. grace

  2104. in

  2105. Christ

  2106. is

  2107. not

  2108. merely

  2109. necessary

  2110. it

  2111. is

  2112. the

  2113. sole

  2114. efficient

  2115. cause

  2116. of

  2117. salvation

  2118. what

  2119. that

  2120. means

  2121. is

  2122. that

  2123. if

  2124. you

  2125. believe

  2126. in

  2127. God

  2128. it's

  2129. by

  2130. his

  2131. grace

  2132. alone

  2133. you

  2134. are

  2135. the

  2136. most

  2137. unlikely

  2138. the

  2139. least

  2140. deserving

  2141. but

  2142. it's

  2143. all

  2144. of

  2145. his

  2146. grace

  2147. and

  2148. it's

  2149. his

  2150. grace

  2151. that

  2152. saves

  2153. you

  2154. his

  2155. grace

  2156. poured

  2157. out

  2158. by

  2159. his

  2160. blood

  2161. on

  2162. the

  2163. cross

  2164. it

  2165. is

  2166. the

  2167. supernatural

  2168. work

  2169. of

  2170. the

  2171. Holy

  2172. Spirit

  2173. this

  2174. is

  2175. the

  2176. Cambridge

  2177. Declaration

  2178. it's

  2179. that

  2180. supernatural

  2181. work

  2182. of

  2183. the

  2184. Holy

  2185. Spirit

  2186. that

  2187. brings

  2188. us

  2189. to

  2190. Christ

  2191. by

  2192. releasing

  2193. us

  2194. from

  2195. our

  2196. bondage

  2197. to

  2198. sin

  2199. under

  2200. Adam

  2201. multiplied

  2202. by

  2203. our

  2204. own

  2205. sins

  2206. and

  2207. raising

  2208. us

  2209. up

  2210. from

  2211. spiritual

  2212. death

  2213. to

  2214. spiritual

  2215. life

  2216. and

  2217. it's

  2218. our

  2219. unlikeliness

  2220. dear

  2221. church

  2222. beloved

  2223. bride

  2224. of our

  2225. Lord

  2226. Jesus

  2227. Christ

  2228. our

  2229. unlikeliness

  2230. that confirms

  2231. his kindness

  2232. and his

  2233. heavenliness

  2234. and his

  2235. glory

  2236. and he

  2237. gives us

  2238. the church

  2239. in you

  2240. and with

  2241. us

  2242. corporately

  2243. his

  2244. Holy

  2245. Spirit

  2246. which will

  2247. be like

  2248. a spring

  2249. of living

  2250. water

  2251. welling up

  2252. to eternal

  2253. life

  2254. in you

  2255. and in

  2256. healthy

  2257. churches

  2258. it should

  2259. never

  2260. become

  2261. stagnant

  2262. the Holy

  2263. Spirit

  2264. working

  2265. our life

  2266. should

  2267. overflow

  2268. it should

  2269. abound

  2270. and that's

  2271. what it

  2272. looks like

  2273. when we

  2274. become

  2275. involved

  2276. with what

  2277. God's

  2278. doing

  2279. in other

  2280. parts

  2281. of the

  2282. world

  2283. as well

  2284. so we

  2285. can pray

  2286. like the

  2287. hymn

  2288. let every

  2289. kindred

  2290. every tribe

  2291. on this

  2292. terrestrial

  2293. ball

  2294. to him

  2295. all majesty

  2296. ascribe

  2297. and crown

  2298. him

  2299. Lord

  2300. of

  2301. all

  2302. you need

  2303. to know

  2304. how this

  2305. was fulfilled

  2306. historically

  2307. Jesus

  2308. said

  2309. in Acts

  2310. 1

  2311. 8

  2312. you now

  2313. wait

  2314. for the

  2315. Holy

  2316. Spirit

  2317. when the

  2318. Holy

  2319. Spirit

  2320. is poured

  2321. out

  2322. on you

  2323. disciples

  2324. you go

  2325. now

  2326. and the

  2327. power

  2328. of the

  2329. Spirit

  2330. the living

  2331. waters

  2332. will go

  2333. with you

  2334. and you

  2335. go

  2336. remember

  2337. the pattern

  2338. you go

  2339. to Jerusalem

  2340. that's where

  2341. the well

  2342. is going

  2343. to the

  2344. Spirit

  2345. will pour

  2346. out

  2347. you spill

  2348. over

  2349. into Judea

  2350. all the

  2351. southern

  2352. tribes

  2353. you don't

  2354. skip

  2355. Samaria

  2356. you go

  2357. to Samaria

  2358. and I'm

  2359. preparing them

  2360. they'll be

  2361. part of the

  2362. great harvest

  2363. and then from

  2364. Samaria

  2365. you go to

  2366. the ends

  2367. of the

  2368. world

  2369. and as

  2370. Jesus said

  2371. that he

  2372. ascended

  2373. to his

  2374. father's

  2375. side

  2376. now how

  2377. this played

  2378. out is

  2379. Acts 8

  2380. 1

  2381. as Stephen

  2382. is martyred

  2383. the blood

  2384. of the

  2385. martyrs

  2386. the seat

  2387. of the

  2388. church

  2389. and Philip

  2390. once again

  2391. Philip

  2392. from the

  2393. beginning

  2394. of John

  2395. he goes

  2396. to Samaria

  2397. and proclaims

  2398. the gospel

  2399. and the

  2400. Lord

  2401. regenerates

  2402. and then

  2403. Peter and

  2404. John go

  2405. up and

  2406. pray for

  2407. the church

  2408. that the

  2409. Holy Spirit

  2410. will fill

  2411. that church

  2412. and the

  2413. church is

  2414. living in

  2415. Samaria

  2416. and that

  2417. same promise

  2418. is for

  2419. us

  2420. let's pray

  2421. and thank

  2422. our Lord

  2423. from

  2424. Ephesians

  2425. 5

  2426. oh God

  2427. put your

  2428. love in

  2429. our hearts

  2430. cause us

  2431. to marvel

  2432. at how much

  2433. Christ loves

  2434. his church

  2435. that he gave

  2436. himself up

  2437. for us

  2438. that you

  2439. might now

  2440. sanctify us

  2441. and cleanse

  2442. us by the

  2443. washing of

  2444. water with

  2445. the word

  2446. so that you

  2447. might present

  2448. the church

  2449. to yourself

  2450. in splendor

  2451. without spot

  2452. or wrinkle

  2453. or any

  2454. such thing

  2455. that we

  2456. like this

  2457. unlikely

  2458. bride

  2459. of our

  2460. heavenly

  2461. groom

  2462. will be

  2463. holy

  2464. and without

  2465. blemish

  2466. we ask for

  2467. your glory

  2468. amen

  2469. holy

  2470. and

  2471. fucking

  2472. uh

  2473. Mensch

  2474. god

  2475. God

  2476. all

  2477. oh
