  1. So we're in John chapter 4, verse 41.

    John 4:41

  2. We're going to read all the way through John chapter 5, verse 18.

    John 5:18

  3. Well, as you hear the word of God read, beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  4. remember that this is his inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  5. When I'm done reading our sermon text for today, I'll say the word of God, and you'll respond, thanks be to God.

  6. Hear the word of our Lord, John 4, verse 41.

    John 4:41

  7. And many more in Samaria believed because of his word.

  8. They said to the woman, it is no longer because of what you said that we believe,

  9. for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.

  10. The first time Jesus is called that, it's from the lips of the Samaritans.

  11. Now, verse 43, our sermon text.

  12. After the two days, this is Jesus spending two days with the Samaritans, he departed for Galilee.

  13. For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.

  14. So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast.

  15. For they too had gone to the feast.

  16. Verse 46.

  17. So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made water to wine.

  18. And at Capernaum, there was an official whose son was ill.

  19. When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee,

  20. he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.

  21. So Jesus said to him,

  22. Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.

  23. The official said to him,

  24. Sir, come down before my child dies.

  25. Jesus said to him,

  26. Go, your son will live.

  27. The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.

  28. As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering.

  29. So he asked them the hour when he began to get better.

  30. And they said to him,

  31. Yesterday at the seventh hour, the fever left him.

  32. The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him,

  33. Your son will live.

  34. And he was, and he himself believed in all his household.

  35. This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

  36. John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  37. After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  38. Now there in Jerusalem, by the sheep gate, a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades.

  39. In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, and paralyzed.

  40. One man was there who had been an invalid for 38 years.

  41. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him,

  42. Do you want to be healed?

  43. The sick man answered him,

  44. Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up,

  45. and while I am going, another steps down before me.

  46. Jesus said to him,

  47. Get up.

  48. Take up your bed and walk.

  49. Now that day was Sabbath.

  50. So the Jews said to the man who has been healed,

  51. It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.

  52. But he answered them,

  53. The man who healed me, that man said to me,

  54. Take up your bed and walk.

  55. They asked him,

  56. Who is the man who said to you,

  57. Take up your bed and walk?

  58. Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was,

  59. for Jesus had withdrawn,

  60. as there was a crowd in the place.

  61. Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him,

  62. See, you are well.

  63. Sin no more,

  64. that nothing worse may happen to you.

  65. The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.

  66. And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus,

  67. because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

  68. But Jesus answered them,

  69. My father is working until now, and I am working.

  70. Verse 18,

  71. This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him,

  72. because not only was he breaking the Sabbath,

  73. but he was even calling God his own father,

  74. making himself equal with God.

  75. This is the word of God.

  76. Thanks be to God.

  77. You may be seated.

  78. Let's pray.

  79. Oh Lord, your word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.

  80. Give us grace to receive your truth in faith and in love.

  81. And give us strength to follow on the path that you set before us.

  82. Through Jesus Christ we ask.

  83. Amen.

  84. There are three differences between sheep and goats.

  85. Sheep feed on green pastures.

  86. Goats feed on trash.

  87. A goat can eat an entire metal spoon and digest it.

  88. No problem.

  89. That's number one.

  90. Number two,

  91. Sheep,

  92. they live together.

  93. They stay as a herd,

  94. as a flock.

  95. But goats,

  96. they're loners.

  97. They survive all alone in the mountains,

  98. in the wilderness.

  99. But the most important difference is number three.

  100. Sheep follow their shepherd's voice.

  101. A shepherd could start walking and call them,

  102. and one by one,

  103. all those that know the shepherd's voice will follow him.

  104. And if you have goats,

  105. you can try to call out and let their nose be as nice as you want to them.

  106. They will ignore you,

  107. and goats will do their own thing.

  108. And that's what Jesus is bringing to attention in John chapter 10, verse 27.

    John 10:27

  109. He says,

  110. My sheep hear my voice,

  111. and I know them,

  112. and they follow me.

  113. In this passage that we read today,

  114. what we have is the kingdom of heaven,

  115. God himself,

  116. breaking into earth,

  117. a boy on his deathbed,

  118. and a dad who's not even a Jew,

  119. he's an official,

  120. having faith in the word Jesus gives him,

  121. and the giver of life,

  122. healing that boy off of his deathbed.

  123. And we have a lame man,

  124. stinky,

  125. all alone,

  126. 38 years,

  127. in misery,

  128. helpless,

  129. hopeless,

  130. and the word of Jesus to that man brings life,

  131. and it creates faith in him.

  132. When is it that the lame will walk,

  133. and the dead will be rised again?

  134. It's when Christ returns.

  135. When Christ returns,

  136. that's what will happen.

  137. The new heavens and the new earth will be ushered in.

  138. That's what the Bible teaches.

  139. And now the king himself is walking the earth,

  140. and he's showing now,

  141. the kingdom of heaven is breaking in.

  142. And what I want to point out to you,

  143. is how he does this.

  144. Christ advances his kingdom,

  145. by his almighty word.

  146. And those who are sick are healed by faith.

  147. So my message to you is very simple,

  148. but it's the most important message I can give you.

  149. Believe in the word of Jesus Christ,

  150. and be saved.

  151. That's what's in focus.

  152. 15 times in the gospel of Mark,

  153. the word of God is elevated.

  154. 24 times in the gospel of Matthew,

  155. the word of God.

  156. 29 times in the gospel of Luke,

  157. upholding the word.

  158. But now we have the biggest concentration of this data,

  159. right here in the gospel of John,

  160. 44 times,

  161. and especially in the passage we just read.

  162. The word of God,

  163. going forth with power.

  164. And what this should point out to us,

  165. is that the foundation for life in Christ,

  166. when Christ is ministering and ruling,

  167. it's his word.

  168. That's the foundation for life in Christ.

  169. And in Acts,

  170. 59 times the word of God is upheld.

  171. So not only is the word of God foundational

  172. for you to have life in Christ,

  173. the word of God is foundational for our life as a church.

  174. That's what the book of Acts shows us.

  175. But yet,

  176. for the same reason,

  177. the word of God has been attacked

  178. and undermined with every generation.

  179. And the church has had to wrestle with that.

  180. The goats

  181. that come to dominate congregations and pulpits,

  182. they want to squelch God's word.

  183. They don't want God's people to hear it,

  184. the voice of the shepherd clearly from his word.

  185. That's why thesis number 54,

  186. one of Martin Luther's 95 thesis,

  187. says this,

  188. injury is done to the word of God

  189. when, in the same sermon,

  190. an equal or larger amount of time

  191. is devoted to indulgences

  192. rather than to the word of God.

  193. And if the Roman Catholic Church

  194. was taking the money from people

  195. in order to tickle their ears

  196. and give them a false assurance,

  197. well, we have a very different

  198. but the same kind of indulgence

  199. going on still today, don't we?

  200. It's a transaction

  201. where you're not coming to hear

  202. the word of the shepherd.

  203. Instead, it's a transaction

  204. to appease your conscience.

  205. But the sheep will know

  206. the voice of the shepherd

  207. and they will follow him.

  208. In John 6, 36,

  209. we read that the words,

  210. Jesus says,

  211. the words I have spoken to you

  212. are spirit and life.

  213. And that's the power

  214. we see them having in this text.

  215. Now, I want you to put your eyes

  216. on a verse from our passage today.

  217. John 4, 41.

  218. Look at John 4, 41.

  219. Many more believed

  220. because of his word.

  221. It's Jesus spending time

  222. with the Samaritans,

  223. preaching to them

  224. how he is the savior of the world.

  225. And that's what they believe

  226. and confess.

  227. And now look,

  228. a little bit later,

  229. we're going to see this next time,

  230. John 5, 24.

  231. Look at what Jesus says

  232. in 5, 24.

  233. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  234. whoever hears my word

  235. and believes him who sent me

  236. has eternal life.

  237. So we see this travel of Jesus

  238. from Jerusalem,

  239. where he talked to Nicodemus,

  240. up to Galilee,

  241. where he was baptizing

  242. on the way in the Israeli land,

  243. we'll call it.

  244. Then he slips over into Samaria

  245. and then back into Israel land

  246. and Cana of Galilee.

  247. So the first miracle

  248. takes place there

  249. in that region

  250. for the official son.

  251. Then he travels

  252. all the way back down

  253. to Jerusalem

  254. and that's where he goes

  255. into the temple

  256. and he heals the lame man.

  257. So that pattern is

  258. from Jerusalem

  259. to Israel land,

  260. slip into Samaria,

  261. and then back into Israel land

  262. and then back down

  263. to Jerusalem

  264. as he ministers.

  265. Every time he gets closer

  266. to Jerusalem

  267. where the established church

  268. is going to try to kill him,

  269. it's more concealed.

  270. Not yet.

  271. My time is not yet

  272. to be crucified.

  273. And then he backs away

  274. and goes back

  275. and every time he pushes back in,

  276. it's that power struggle

  277. because they know

  278. the king of heaven and earth

  279. will rule over all

  280. one way or the other.

  281. So now look at John 4, verse 50.

    John 4:50

  282. Jesus said to that man,

  283. Go, your son will live.

  284. And look at the response

  285. of this official

  286. who's not even an Israelite.

  287. The man believed

  288. the word that Jesus spoke to him

  289. and went on his way.

  290. So what I want to show you

  291. in these two miracles,

  292. these two signs,

  293. is that number one,

  294. you must hear God's word

  295. in order to believe

  296. and number two,

  297. you must respond to his word

  298. in order to be saved.

  299. So first,

  300. you must come to know

  301. that you need a savior.

  302. That's what the Samaritans realized.

  303. That's why he preached

  304. the gospel to them.

  305. They were not trying

  306. to save themselves

  307. by self-righteousness.

  308. Look at verse 41 again.

  309. The Samaritans heard Christ's word

  310. and believed that they needed him

  311. to be their savior.

  312. Verse 41,

  313. many more believed

  314. because of his word.

  315. Verse 42,

  316. they said,

  317. we have heard for ourselves

  318. and we know that this is indeed

  319. the savior of the world.

  320. They knew they were sinners.

  321. They knew they could not have a hope

  322. of being right with God

  323. unless they would be saved.

  324. You too must know

  325. that you need a savior.

  326. Now John is developing the theme

  327. that he already hinted at

  328. at the very beginning

  329. of this gospel.

  330. Remember John chapter one,

  331. verse one,

  332. in the beginning was the word

  333. and the word was with God

  334. and the word was God.

  335. All things were made through him.

  336. Verse 14,

  337. and the word became flesh

  338. and dwelt among us

  339. and we have seen his glory.

  340. Glory as the only son

  341. from the father,

  342. full of grace and truth.

  343. So every time the word of Christ

  344. is proclaimed,

  345. when Christ gives his word

  346. in these stories,

  347. it's a word of grace

  348. and a word of truth.

  349. And all those that the father

  350. will bring to life,

  351. they will believe,

  352. they will respond,

  353. and they will obey him.

  354. So Christ advances his kingdom

  355. on earth by his clear word.

  356. Number two,

  357. you must want to hear Christ,

  358. not just to see a sign.

  359. Look at verse 48.

  360. The Israelites in Cana of Galilee,

  361. they still needed his word

  362. in order to believe.

  363. So we read in verse 48,

  364. Jesus said to them,

  365. unless you see signs and wonders,

  366. you will not believe.

  367. And he's talking about

  368. these people who had heard

  369. about his miracles

  370. down in Jerusalem.

  371. And Jesus is saying to them

  372. what Paul says later,

  373. that faith,

  374. it comes not by seeing a sign

  375. or a miracle.

  376. You're saved by faith,

  377. not by sight.

  378. And he needs them now

  379. to stop looking for a sign,

  380. look instead to the one,

  381. to Jesus Christ,

  382. who the signs are pointing to,

  383. and believe his word.

  384. Now Jesus knew

  385. what was in the heart of man,

  386. we read,

  387. and as he was in Jerusalem,

  388. the crowds gathered

  389. and he goes back to Cana.

  390. They just knew him

  391. from being the miracle worker.

  392. And he knew what was

  393. in their heart

  394. and he would not give himself

  395. to them

  396. because he knew

  397. they were after

  398. more and more signs.

  399. But now we have a contrast

  400. with these Jews

  401. that just wanted a sign

  402. with this official.

  403. The official, I think,

  404. is to show us,

  405. look, the gospel will go forth

  406. and it will work with power,

  407. not just for the self-righteous.

  408. In fact,

  409. it's for those who quickly know

  410. they are sinners.

  411. Look at verse 47.

  412. When this man,

  413. and this is referring

  414. to the official,

  415. most likely he worked

  416. for King Herod,

  417. non-religious,

  418. non-Jew,

  419. he lived down at Capernaum.

  420. Capernaum was the city

  421. down by the lake.

  422. So picture a lakefront mansion.

  423. This man works for the king,

  424. for the official.

  425. But now this man has a son

  426. and his dear son gets a fever.

  427. I mean,

  428. we think of how much sickness

  429. we've all had

  430. in our families these days

  431. and in ancient times

  432. a fever is going to be deadly.

  433. And this boy gets weaker

  434. and weaker and weaker.

  435. And the family,

  436. all the servants,

  437. the mother,

  438. the dad,

  439. everything stops.

  440. He gives orders.

  441. Everything gets paused with work.

  442. It's all about his son's life now.

  443. This could be their final moments

  444. with their dear boy.

  445. And someone mentions to him,

  446. there is a man

  447. who is doing miracles

  448. down in Jerusalem.

  449. And a father does

  450. what any father would do.

  451. He leaves everything.

  452. He starts hiking up

  453. away from the lake,

  454. back up to where Jesus is

  455. in Cana.

  456. And let's see what he says

  457. in verse 47.

  458. This man heard

  459. that Jesus had come

  460. to Galilee

  461. and he went to him

  462. and asked him

  463. to come down

  464. and heal his son

  465. for he was at the point of death.

  466. Verse 48,

  467. so Jesus said to him,

  468. unless you see signs

  469. and wonders,

  470. you will not believe.

  471. And that's exactly true

  472. of the people of Cana.

  473. They wanted to see more signs

  474. and they wanted a miracle worker.

  475. But let's see if this man

  476. will have a faith

  477. in Jesus at his word

  478. without needing to see anything.

  479. Because Christ advances

  480. his kingdom on earth

  481. by his soul-searching word.

  482. And that word

  483. put this man back

  484. to evaluate,

  485. do I need to see a sign

  486. or will I have faith

  487. and go trusting

  488. this man's orders?

  489. So we see in verse 49,

  490. the official said to him,

  491. sir, come down

  492. before my child dies.

  493. Come down

  494. or going down

  495. toward the lake again.

  496. He says,

  497. come down

  498. and be with us.

  499. Just like the Samaritans

  500. had said,

  501. stay with us

  502. for a couple days.

  503. We want you.

  504. We want your presence with us.

  505. We don't want just a sign

  506. or a miracle.

  507. We want you.

  508. Your presence

  509. is what could heal him.

  510. But this also foreshadows

  511. how Mary and Martha said,

  512. Jesus,

  513. if you had only been here,

  514. then our brother Lazarus

  515. would not have died.

  516. None of them had the faith

  517. that Jesus could also

  518. let that person die

  519. and then raise them

  520. from the dead.

  521. That's what he would do

  522. with Lazarus.

  523. And look in verse 50,

  524. Jesus said to this man,

  525. go,

  526. your son

  527. will

  528. live.

  529. And we read

  530. that the man

  531. believed

  532. the word

  533. that Jesus spoke

  534. to him

  535. and went

  536. on his way.

  537. The man believed

  538. the word

  539. that Jesus spoke

  540. to him

  541. and went

  542. on his way.

  543. The application

  544. for us

  545. is that you must

  546. hear the word

  547. of God

  548. and then you must

  549. believe

  550. the word

  551. of God.

  552. Because Jesus

  553. is still speaking

  554. today

  555. and he's still

  556. speaking to you

  557. through his word.

  558. Verse 51,

  559. as he was going

  560. down,

  561. his servants

  562. met him

  563. and told him

  564. that his son

  565. was recovering.

  566. Now listen

  567. to what comes next.

  568. This man

  569. was thinking

  570. about it.

  571. Okay,

  572. I walk there,

  573. it's about 20 miles

  574. from Capernaum

  575. to Cana.

  576. 20 miles,

  577. about a two-day trip

  578. and the whole way

  579. back he's thinking,

  580. I just left.

  581. I did this whole

  582. big trip,

  583. I could have missed

  584. the final moments

  585. with my son.

  586. Will this actually

  587. be saving him

  588. or not?

  589. And as soon

  590. as the servants

  591. tell him the good

  592. news,

  593. he wants to now

  594. try to see

  595. if he can connect

  596. the dots.

  597. He says,

  598. what hour was it?

  599. It was the seventh

  600. hour.

  601. That is when

  602. the Lord spoke

  603. the word to me.

  604. The very moment

  605. he spoke the word.

  606. I didn't have to

  607. come back,

  608. I didn't have to

  609. do anything.

  610. It was the word

  611. of Christ

  612. that healed my son

  613. that very moment.

  614. And so you see,

  615. we're told next,

  616. verse 53,

  617. he himself

  618. believed.

  619. He believed

  620. and all his

  621. household.

  622. Now you see,

  623. that word that

  624. Christ spoke to him,

  625. it did two things

  626. at the same time.

  627. It made his son

  628. on his deathbed

  629. well.

  630. Just like the word

  631. of God brought

  632. creation into being,

  633. the word of Christ

  634. 20 miles away

  635. made that boy well.

  636. That's the first

  637. thing it did.

  638. The second thing

  639. the word of Christ

  640. did is it

  641. regenerated

  642. this official

  643. Gentile.

  644. Gave him a new

  645. heart.

  646. He believed

  647. because the word

  648. of God was

  649. powerful.

  650. Now I want to

  651. pause.

  652. We've all lost

  653. loved ones

  654. and

  655. Jesus came

  656. to proclaim

  657. salvation

  658. for your soul

  659. for all eternity.

  660. And I see

  661. in this story

  662. that even if

  663. this man

  664. would have

  665. gotten back

  666. and his son

  667. was not

  668. healed,

  669. the word

  670. of Christ

  671. regenerated

  672. him.

  673. And the sign

  674. confirmed the

  675. faith that God

  676. had already

  677. put in him.

  678. This man

  679. encountered

  680. Jesus.

  681. And Jesus

  682. said,

  683. unless you see

  684. a sign,

  685. you won't

  686. believe.

  687. So this man

  688. was believing

  689. without even

  690. seeing the sign.

  691. And God

  692. did heal him.

  693. God did

  694. bring life

  695. to his son.

  696. But remember,

  697. salvation is by

  698. faith through

  699. the word of God,

  700. not by sight.

  701. And so the

  702. encouragement to

  703. you is that

  704. you must

  705. receive the

  706. word of God

  707. by faith.

  708. And you must

  709. believe without

  710. seeing the

  711. promised spiritual

  712. realities,

  713. the truth of

  714. the Bible.

  715. You must

  716. believe in

  717. Christ by

  718. faith alone.

  719. So Christ's

  720. kingdom advances

  721. on earth

  722. through his

  723. faith-giving

  724. word.

  725. Not only must

  726. you believe the

  727. word of God,

  728. you must also

  729. obey the

  730. word that

  731. the Lord

  732. gives you.

  733. Let's look,

  734. not only did

  735. this official

  736. believe and

  737. obey by going

  738. back and

  739. seeing it,

  740. look at the

  741. next story.

  742. I think that's

  743. what it shows

  744. us.

  745. Chapter 5,

  746. verse 1.

  747. You must

  748. obey and

  749. respond to

  750. the word of

  751. God as you

  752. hear it.

  753. Verse 1 of

  754. chapter 5,

  755. after this,

  756. there was a

  757. feast of the

  758. Jews, and the

  759. Jews went up

  760. to Jerusalem.

  761. Jerusalem.

  762. Now, Jerusalem's

  763. in the mountains,

  764. and so every

  765. time you're going

  766. to Jerusalem,

  767. it's called

  768. going up or

  769. ascending, like

  770. the Psalms of

  771. Ascent.

  772. So Capernaum is

  773. down by the

  774. lake, we go

  775. down, so it's

  776. more geographic

  777. than north and

  778. south.

  779. Verse 2,

  780. there were in

  781. Jerusalem by the

  782. sheep gate a

  783. pool, really two

  784. pools.

  785. In Aramaic,

  786. they're called

  787. Bethesda, which

  788. has five roofed

  789. colonnades.

  790. So the book of

  791. Nehemiah describes

  792. the rebuilding of the

  793. walls and the

  794. gates, and this

  795. would have been on

  796. the northeast entrance

  797. into the temple

  798. area, into Jerusalem,

  799. and it's a gate that

  800. was smaller, and it's

  801. where all the sheep

  802. could have been

  803. brought in, even

  804. from Bethlehem and

  805. from those pastures

  806. surrounding the city,

  807. they would be filing

  808. in, bringing in

  809. through the sheep

  810. gate, and what

  811. would they be brought

  812. into the temple

  813. for?

  814. To be offered as

  815. sacrifices for the

  816. forgiveness of sins,

  817. and these pools,

  818. they're called

  819. Bethesda.

  820. Bethesda means

  821. house, remember

  822. Beth means house

  823. of Bethlehem,

  824. house of bread,

  825. Bethesda means

  826. house of grace,

  827. and we're told

  828. that there was

  829. this scene here,

  830. quite a scene.

  831. Look at verse

  832. three, there lay

  833. a multitude, a

  834. multitude of

  835. invalids, blind,

  836. lame, and

  837. paralyzed.

  838. You've been to

  839. the Denver Public

  840. Library, you've

  841. been to Portland,

  842. you've been to

  843. other parts of the

  844. world, you know

  845. what that looks

  846. like, a multitude

  847. of destitute,

  848. poor, stinky

  849. invalids, the

  850. blind, the lame.

  851. I mean, it's a

  852. picture of hell.

  853. Picture the sounds,

  854. the cries, the

  855. agony, the

  856. misery, helplessness,

  857. and then yet here

  858. there are Levites

  859. and priests going,

  860. taking these lambs,

  861. serving all around

  862. the temple.

  863. And Jesus had been

  864. taken to the temple

  865. throughout his whole

  866. life.

  867. His parents were

  868. taking him there

  869. because he was

  870. fulfilling all of

  871. the law of Moses.

  872. And we're told that

  873. these invalids would

  874. wait for the waters

  875. to stir.

  876. And so how these

  877. pools were filled,

  878. do you remember

  879. last week we talked

  880. about the living

  881. waters that bubbled

  882. up from that spring

  883. under Jerusalem?

  884. That same spring,

  885. it would pass through

  886. minerals that were

  887. red and they would

  888. pick up a red

  889. color and they

  890. would feed into

  891. this pool.

  892. And the springs

  893. were not constant

  894. so there would be

  895. times where there

  896. would be more

  897. water spilling out,

  898. bubbling up,

  899. picking up more

  900. minerals, sweeping

  901. in this red color

  902. and causing the

  903. waters of these

  904. pools to stir.

  905. So there's some

  906. wonderful imagery

  907. here.

  908. Can you picture it

  909. in your mind?

  910. The gate where the

  911. sheep come in to be

  912. offered as sacrifices,

  913. these red waters

  914. moving and bubbling

  915. up, the living

  916. waters filling

  917. these pools in

  918. the house of grace

  919. and yet the multitude

  920. of invalids and

  921. sick.

  922. And what is the

  923. purpose of the

  924. temple?

  925. It's so that the

  926. sick and the

  927. broken can be

  928. made whole,

  929. they can be healed

  930. and been brought

  931. into fellowship and

  932. communion with the

  933. Lord.

  934. Now I want to

  935. point out to you

  936. how you can trust

  937. the word that Jesus

  938. speaks to you

  939. because he sees

  940. the very least of

  941. these.

  942. Now even though

  943. there was a

  944. multitude in verse

  945. three we're told

  946. there were blind,

  947. lame, and

  948. paralyzed.

  949. And then verse

  950. five, one man

  951. was there who

  952. had been an

  953. invalid for 38

  954. years.

  955. And out of all

  956. that multitude,

  957. look at verse

  958. six, when Jesus

  959. saw him.

  960. Jesus sees him

  961. as one individual,

  962. one person, a

  963. paralyzed man amid

  964. the multitude.

  965. multitude.

  966. And Jesus knew

  967. that he had

  968. already been there

  969. a long time.

  970. Now one person,

  971. Jesus Christ, he

  972. could have known

  973. this according to

  974. his divine nature,

  975. omniscient God.

  976. He could have also

  977. known that this man

  978. had been there a

  979. long time according

  980. to his human nature.

  981. Maybe as a boy, as

  982. a teenager, this

  983. scene broke his

  984. heart.

  985. And the compassion

  986. of the Father,

  987. knowing what the

  988. temple was for,

  989. his heart toward

  990. this man.

  991. Maybe he'd even

  992. talked to this man

  993. when he was

  994. growing up.

  995. That was a man

  996. he knew, had been

  997. there in misery

  998. for so long.

  999. And Jesus spoke

  1000. to that man.

  1001. You can trust

  1002. the word of

  1003. Jesus when he

  1004. speaks to you

  1005. because he speaks

  1006. to the heart.

  1007. Notice what it

  1008. is that Jesus

  1009. says, verse six.

  1010. Jesus said to

  1011. him, do you

  1012. want to be

  1013. healed?

  1014. Do you want

  1015. to be healed?

  1016. Doesn't that seem

  1017. like an obvious

  1018. question?

  1019. Don't you want

  1020. to be healed?

  1021. But think about

  1022. how soul-searching

  1023. this is.

  1024. This man, for

  1025. 38 years, this

  1026. is life.

  1027. This is all he

  1028. knows of life as

  1029. I lay here.

  1030. This man does

  1031. not have a name.

  1032. His name is the

  1033. sick man.

  1034. That's his entire

  1035. identity.

  1036. And he says,

  1037. there's no one to

  1038. put me in the

  1039. waters.

  1040. And in fact,

  1041. people cut me

  1042. off when I

  1043. think I have a

  1044. chance.

  1045. This man is

  1046. helpless.

  1047. And this man

  1048. is hopeless.

  1049. And Jesus

  1050. asked the

  1051. hopeless,

  1052. helpless man,

  1053. do you want

  1054. to be healed?

  1055. Jesus asks you

  1056. today, is the

  1057. life that you

  1058. have now, is

  1059. that really what

  1060. you love?

  1061. Or do you want

  1062. to be healed?

  1063. Because the

  1064. kingdom of God

  1065. comes to heal

  1066. you, not to

  1067. leave you as

  1068. you are.

  1069. Jonathan Edwards

  1070. in the 1700s

  1071. pointed out how

  1072. a human being,

  1073. according to

  1074. their free agency,

  1075. will always do

  1076. what they want

  1077. most.

  1078. So for example,

  1079. a man would

  1080. not go rob a

  1081. bank because he

  1082. wants his

  1083. freedom more

  1084. than the high

  1085. risk wealth.

  1086. So you do what

  1087. you want most.

  1088. And that's why

  1089. the will needs

  1090. to be converted.

  1091. Your will needs

  1092. to change.

  1093. You will always

  1094. want what is

  1095. for you.

  1096. You will always

  1097. want that sin.

  1098. That's why every

  1099. single drug addict

  1100. has not an

  1101. addiction to a

  1102. bunch of

  1103. different drugs.

  1104. They have a

  1105. drug of choice

  1106. because that's

  1107. what they want.

  1108. They believe that

  1109. drug will give

  1110. them the greatest

  1111. happiness.

  1112. So they do what

  1113. they want.

  1114. And then they

  1115. become, it's

  1116. your chemical

  1117. addiction to it.

  1118. It's an identity.

1119. This is who I am

  1120. now.

  1121. And Jesus comes

  1122. to reverse that.

  1123. Do you want to

  1124. be healed?

  1125. So Christ, he

  1126. advances his

  1127. kingdom through

  1128. his personal

  1129. word.

  1130. Only he knows

  1131. man's heart.

  1132. He knows my

  1133. heart.

  1134. He knew this

  1135. man's heart.

  1136. And he knows

  1137. your heart.

  1138. Do you want to

  1139. be healed by

  1140. Jesus?

  1141. Now, the next

  1142. thing I want to

  1143. point out is the

  1144. order in which

  1145. this happens, the

  1146. sequence.

  1147. Jesus first has to

  1148. heal the man.

  1149. then the man has

  1150. to obey.

  1151. It's not the

  1152. other way around.

  1153. The man doesn't

  1154. obey God and he's

  1155. healed by obeying.

  1156. First, God has to

  1157. heal you.

  1158. And then you will

  1159. obey.

  1160. If you are truly

  1161. healed, you will

  1162. obey.

  1163. Look at verse

  1164. seven.

  1165. The sick man

  1166. answered him,

  1167. Sir, I have no

1168. one to put me in

  1169. the pool.

  1170. When the water is

  1171. stirred up, I am

  1172. going and another

  1173. steps in down

  1174. before me.

  1175. He doesn't say,

1176. yes, I want to be

  1177. healed.

  1178. He makes more

  1179. excuses.

  1180. He needs to be

  1181. healed to even

  1182. know that this is

  1183. what he needs, what

  1184. he wants.

  1185. So Christ's word is

  1186. humbling.

  1187. And look at verse

  1188. eight.

  1189. Jesus said to him,

  1190. get up, take up

  1191. your bed and walk.

  1192. So he commands

1193. him on what is the

  1194. thing he needs to

  1195. do.

  1196. But the man still

  1197. does not have the

  1198. power to do it

  1199. until God heals

  1200. him.

  1201. Look at verse

  1202. nine.

  1203. At once, look at

  1204. the order, the man

  1205. was healed, but it

  1206. doesn't stop there.

  1207. And he took up

  1208. his bed and

  1209. walked.

  1210. So the word of

  1211. Christ is

  1212. authoritative.

  1213. His kingdom is

  1214. coming.

  1215. And he commands

  1216. you, you must

  1217. believe.

  1218. You must repent.

  1219. You must turn to

  1220. the Lord Jesus.

  1221. And his word is

  1222. humbling.

  1223. Unless I heal

  1224. you, you will

  1225. never turn.

  1226. You will always

  1227. want the sin or

  1228. the idol more than

  1229. to be with me,

  1230. your creator.

  1231. So if you are

  1232. walking with

  1233. Christ, praise the

  1234. Lord that he turned

  1235. your heart.

  1236. And praise the

  1237. Lord that he's

  1238. making Christ more

  1239. and more of your

  1240. desire, the healing

  1241. of God more and

  1242. more the thing you

  1243. do want most in

  1244. life by his grace.

  1245. But you and I

1246. never get to put it

  1247. back on God.

  1248. Well, I don't have

  1249. to believe because

  1250. I'm not healed.

  1251. No.

  1252. His word is

  1253. authoritative.

  1254. You must obey him

1255. if you are to be

  1256. saved.

  1257. You don't get to

  1258. just hear his word

  1259. and ignore his

  1260. word because then

  1261. you've made your

  1262. decision.

  1263. You have chosen to

  1264. reject your God,

  1265. the King of kings.

  1266. So how do you

  1267. obey the word that

  1268. Jesus speaks to you?

  1269. Well, I want to

  1270. show you in verse

  1271. 14.

  1272. Afterward, Jesus

  1273. found the same man

  1274. in the temple and

  1275. Jesus had to remind

  1276. him, see, you are

  1277. well.

  1278. The man for 38

  1279. years lies on the

  1280. ground in his filth

1281. with no one to help

  1282. him.

  1283. Now the man's walking

  1284. around and Jesus has

  1285. to point out the

  1286. obvious thing to him.

  1287. Man, look at

  1288. yourself.

  1289. You're not the same

  1290. as you were.

  1291. You have been healed.

1292. And why is that so

  1293. important?

  1294. And why does Jesus,

  1295. the good shepherd,

  1296. whose voice they will

  1297. always know, why does

1298. he care to tell this

  1299. man that?

  1300. Look at what Jesus

  1301. commands him next.

  1302. What are those three

  1303. words?

  1304. Sin no more.

1305. So how do you know if

1306. the word of God is

  1307. working powerfully in

  1308. you?

  1309. It's that you continue

  1310. walking with him.

1311. You do not live in

  1312. sin.

  1313. And Jesus says, make

  1314. sure that nothing

  1315. worse may happen to

  1316. you.

  1317. And you might be

  1318. thinking, what's worse

  1319. than laying in a

  1320. multitude of invalids

  1321. for 38 years?

  1322. How could it

  1323. possibly get worse

  1324. on this earth?

  1325. Jesus is declaring

  1326. to live an unrepentant

  1327. life is worse than

  1328. being broken in the

  1329. body.

1330. You will have to face

  1331. your creator one day.

1332. And he is most pure,

  1333. most loving,

  1334. most righteous.

  1335. And the blood of

  1336. Jesus Christ is the

  1337. only thing that can

  1338. heal your soul.

  1339. And just like the

  1340. springs of living

  1341. water bubble up,

  1342. it's the blood of

  1343. Christ that he will

  1344. shed from the cross

  1345. for the forgiveness

  1346. of your sins.

1347. By his blood we are

  1348. healed.

1349. Go and sin no more.

  1350. Christ's kingdom

  1351. advances on earth

  1352. by his life-changing

  1353. word.

  1354. word.

  1355. It changed that

  1356. man's life the

  1357. moment he was

  1358. healed.

  1359. He picked up his

  1360. mat and walked and

  1361. obeyed.

  1362. That initial step of

  1363. conversion.

  1364. But it's life-changing

1365. for the rest of your

  1366. life.

1367. Go and sin no more.

  1368. It's the same power,

  1369. the same authoritative

  1370. word that converts a

  1371. sinner.

  1372. It's the same

  1373. authoritative word that

  1374. sustains that

  1375. Christian, that saint

  1376. in sanctification,

  1377. becoming more and more

  1378. like Christ.

  1379. Christ.

  1380. Now, if you're like

  1381. me, one of the

  1382. scariest thoughts you

1383. have is that I know

  1384. God saved me.

  1385. I know it's the power

  1386. of Christ that holds

  1387. me.

1388. Yet not I, but Christ in

1389. me is all that carries

  1390. me.

1391. And one of the scariest

  1392. thoughts is that what

  1393. if I relapse or

  1394. backslide or I fall

  1395. into egregious sin?

  1396. I know by my flesh I

  1397. would still fall back

  1398. into sin.

  1399. I need Christ to

  1400. sustain me every hour.

  1401. And that's such a

  1402. terrifying thought.

  1403. Samuel Rutherford was

  1404. a pastor in the 1500s

  1405. in Scotland.

  1406. Tiny little church in

  1407. the countryside.

  1408. And he felt that.

1409. He said, it feels like

  1410. I'm like a spider.

  1411. And the only thing

  1412. holding me up from,

1413. you know, from hell is

1414. this one thread of a

  1415. web.

  1416. But the hand that

  1417. holds that thread is

  1418. the hand of Jesus

  1419. Christ.

  1420. He ransomed me.

  1421. And we have the

  1422. confidence that the

  1423. same God who saves

  1424. will sustain you by

  1425. that same power every

  1426. day because Jesus

  1427. says, look at verse

  1428. 17, God is working.

1429. God is working and he

  1430. will keep you.

  1431. Verse 17 says,

  1432. Jesus answered this

  1433. man, my father is

  1434. working until now and

  1435. I am working.

  1436. That's your promise

  1437. that God who saved

  1438. you will sustain you.

  1439. I want to give a

  1440. couple words of

  1441. caution and reflection

  1442. here on the Pharisees

  1443. are right mixed into

  1444. the same story.

1445. And as I said at the

  1446. beginning, what's

  1447. happening here is the

  1448. promise of heaven, the

  1449. promise of a new

  1450. creation, the dead will

  1451. rise, the lame will

  1452. walk, and Christ is

  1453. breaking in the kingdom

  1454. of heaven everywhere he

  1455. steps his foot.

  1456. life and these tastes

  1457. because he just brings

  1458. the power of God.

  1459. It's happening.

1460. And the caution is that

1461. you could miss it just

  1462. like these Pharisees

  1463. missed it.

  1464. Thomas Watson said,

1465. none will find it more

  1466. difficult to repent than

  1467. hypocrites.

  1468. They have juggled in

  1469. religion so much that

  1470. their treacherous hearts

1471. know not how to repent

  1472. any longer.

1473. And when you hear the

1474. word of God go forth,

  1475. you must believe.

1476. How do you know you

  1477. believe?

  1478. You repent.

1479. You turn to Christ once

1480. again as your only hope

1481. in life and in death.

  1482. Watson said, hypocrisy

  1483. is this.

  1484. It's counterfeiting

  1485. sanctity.

  1486. The hypocrite pretends

1487. to a form of godliness

  1488. like the Pharisees but

1489. denies the power of God.

  1490. 2 Timothy 3.5,

1491. the hypocrite is a saint

1492. in jest, like an ape

  1493. clothed in purple.

  1494. Under his mask, a

  1495. profession that he hides

  1496. his plague sores.

  1497. Isn't that an image?

1498. An ape in a purple robe?

  1499. That's what hypocrisy is.

1500. He is seemingly good so

1501. that he may be really bad.

  1502. The hypocrite seems to

1503. have his eyes nailed to

1504. heaven, but his heart is

  1505. full of impure lustings.

1506. He lives in secret sin

  1507. against his conscience.

1508. Be careful to not be like

  1509. the Pharisee.

1510. See, Jesus came to be

  1511. the Lamb of God.

  1512. He became the gate

  1513. through which his sheep

1514. would enter now to have

  1515. fellowship with the Holy

  1516. God.

  1517. He spilled his blood.

1518. He brings healing by his

  1519. word.

1520. What is repentance and why

1521. is there so much freedom

1522. for us to live in

  1523. continual repentance?

  1524. Well, Charles Spurgeon in

  1525. the 1800s quoted a

  1526. children's hymn that was

1527. known at the time and it

  1528. goes like this.

1529. Repentance is to leave the

1530. sins we loved before and

1531. show that we in earnest

1532. grieve by doing so no more.

  1533. Christ's kingdom advances on

1534. earth by his living and

  1535. active word.

  1536. I want to make a

  1537. connection here for you.

1538. The living word of God, it

  1539. still goes forth today.

1540. Salvation is still by faith,

  1541. not by sight today.

  1542. In Ephesians 121, we're

1543. told that Christ rules over

1544. all the earth now and he

  1545. rules from above, from

  1546. heaven above, over all

  1547. authority and power and

  1548. dominion, above every name

1549. that is named, not only in

1550. this age, but also in the

  1551. age to come.

1552. And the kingdom of heaven is

1553. breaking in still by his

1554. word as is proclaimed through

  1555. the church, through his

  1556. people.

1557. So the ear, the body,

1558. receives the word of God.

1559. The soul believes and obeys

1560. and trusts in Christ for

  1561. forgiveness.

1562. And then from the soul, that

1563. life in Christ of the age to

1564. come works its way out in the

  1565. body.

1566. So how do you know if you've

1567. been converted, if you have a

  1568. new heart?

1569. It's like the drunk man that

1570. again with Charles Spurgeon, he

1571. was on the streets drunk again

1572. and Charles Spurgeon was walking

1573. by on his way to work.

1574. And this man said, hey, Pastor

1575. Spurgeon, I'm one of your

  1576. converts.

  1577. Converts.

1578. And then Spurgeon turned around

1579. and said, yeah, you must be one

1580. of my converts because if you

1581. were one of God's converts, you

1582. wouldn't be living like this.

1583. Beware of the hypocrisy of the

  1584. Pharisees.

1585. So we pray now that like the

1586. hymn, Lord, haste the day when

1587. our faith will be made sight.

1588. The clouds will one day be

1589. rolled back as the scroll.

1590. The trump shall resound and the

  1591. Lord shall descend.

1592. And if you're in Christ, you can

1593. say, it is well with my soul.

1594. You must respond to God's word

1595. if you are his, if you belong to

  1596. him.

1597. To reject his word is to be a goat.

1598. And Jesus said in Matthew 25,

1599. Jesus will gather all nations and

1600. he will separate people, one from

1601. another, as a shepherd separates the

  1602. sheep from the goats.

1603. One will go away into eternal

1604. punishment and the other, the

1605. righteous in Christ to eternal

  1606. life.

1607. Be sure that you believe now and

1608. obey Christ, that you can have

  1609. life in him.

  1610. His kingdom is coming.

1611. It advances on earth by his word.

1612. So don't ignore the word of God.

1613. Confess that it is, it is

1614. everything that we've seen it to

  1615. be in this passage.

  1616. His word is mighty.

  1617. It works with power.

  1618. It is clear.

  1619. You can't say, I didn't understand

1620. that I need to have faith in

  1621. Christ.

1622. His word will search your soul.

1623. Put yourself under his word.

1624. His word is faith giving.

1625. You come to the Lord weak and ask

1626. him to work mightily in your heart

1627. to increase your faith by his

  1628. word.

1629. You'll see over and over in the

1630. word of God, God is merciful toward

  1631. those who repent.

1632. So you can come to him just as you

  1633. are.

1634. Don't try to clean yourself up first.

1635. And his word is personal.

  1636. He knows your heart.

1637. He knows where you need healing

  1638. even today.

1639. Yes, his word is humbling and

  1640. authoritative.

1641. But let's bow the knee to our Lord

1642. Jesus today because one day every

1643. knee will bow in heaven and on

1644. earth and confess that Jesus is

  1645. Lord.

  1646. Let's pray.

  1647. Amen.

  1648. Amen.

  1649. from Isaiah 35.

1650. Lord, we read how the wilderness

1651. and the dry land will one day be

  1652. glad.

1653. We still walk in the desert and we

1654. feel the shadows deepen all around

  1655. us.

1656. But we thank you, Lord, that

  1657. spiritually you've inaugurated the

1658. kingdom of the age to come.

1659. We pray, Lord, that you will blossom

1660. in our hearts and our souls and our

1661. families your abundant life, that we

1662. can rejoice with joy and singing.

1663. We pray that the glory and majesty of

1664. the new creation will be breaking in,

1665. that you will strengthen the feeble

  1666. name.

1667. Lord, those with an anxious heart even

1668. today, may we be strong in Christ.

1669. May we not fear your judgment because

1670. we know our sins are covered by your

  1671. blood.

1672. We behold you, our God.

1673. You will come with a vengeance to

1674. judge the living and the dead.

1675. But those who are united to you will

  1676. leap like a deer.

1677. The lame will be healed and the tongue

1678. of the mute will sing for joy.

1679. You promise that the waters will break

1680. forth in the wilderness and the streams

1681. in the desert and the burning sand

1682. shall become a pool and the thirsty

  1683. ground springs of water.

1684. We praise you, Lord, that we can taste

1685. that now in Christ when we taste Christ and

1686. we can believe in you now through your

  1687. powerful word.

  1688. Amen.
