  1. As I read the Word of God, you follow along with your eyes. Remember, this is God's very own Word.

  2. It is inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and it is sufficient for you and for me today.

  3. Let's read.

  4. After this, Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.

  5. And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.

  6. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.

  7. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.

  8. Lifting up his eyes then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him,

  9. Jesus said to Philip,

  10. Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?

  11. He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.

  12. Philip answered him,

  13. Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.

  14. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon's brother, said to him,

  15. There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?

  16. Jesus said,

  17. Have the people sit down.

  18. Now there was much grass in the place, so the men sat down, about five thousand in number.

  19. Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given things, he distributed them to those who were seated.

  20. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.

  21. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples,

  22. Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.

  23. So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten them.

  24. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said,

  25. This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.

  26. Verse 15,

  27. When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum.

  28. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.

  29. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.

  30. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat.

  31. And they were frightened.

  32. But he said to them,

  33. It is I.

  34. Do not be afraid.

  35. Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

  36. Verse 22,

  37. On the next day, the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there,

  38. and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.

  39. Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread and after the Lord had given thanks.

  40. So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum seeking Jesus.

  41. When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him,

  42. Rabbi, when did you come here?

  43. Jesus answered them,

  44. Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

  45. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you.

  46. For on him God the Father has set his seal.

  47. Then they said to him,

  48. What must we do to be doing the works of God?

  49. Jesus answered them,

  50. This is the work of God, that you believe in him who he has sent.

  51. So they said to him,

  52. Then what sign do you do that we may see or believe you?

  53. What work do you perform?

  54. Our fathers ate manna in the wilderness, as it is written.

  55. He gave them bread from heaven.

  56. Verse 32.

  57. Jesus said to them,

  58. Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven,

  59. but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

  60. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.

  61. They said to him,

  62. Sir, give us this bread always.

  63. Jesus said to them,

  64. I am the bread of life.

  65. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger,

  66. and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

  67. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.

  68. All that the Father gives me will come to me,

  69. and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

  70. For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will,

  71. but the will of him who sent me.

  72. And this is the will of him who sent me,

  73. that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me,

  74. but raise it up on the last day.

  75. For this is the will of my Father,

  76. that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life.

  77. And I will raise him up on the last day.

  78. This is the word of God.

  79. Thanks be to God.

  80. You may be seated.

  81. Well, let's pray.

  82. As we sung a moment ago,

  83. Speak, O Lord, as we come to you,

  84. to receive the food of your holy word.

  85. Take your truth,

  86. plant it deep in us,

  87. shape and fashion us in your likeness.

  88. May now through the sermon,

  89. May the light of Christ be seen by everyone here today who has an ear to hear.

  90. Amen.

  91. Well, beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  92. the message for today is the best news I can bring to you for the new year.

  93. There is food from heaven for your hungry soul.

  94. Look at verse 35.

  95. Jesus says,

  96. I am the bread of life.

  97. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger.

  98. And whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

  99. So my proposition for us today is exactly that.

  100. Your soul will hunger until you feast on Christ.

  101. We see in this chapter,

  102. our Lord moving mightily upon the earth.

  103. And then he moves mightily over the waters.

  104. He takes a little boy's Lunchable and he distributes it to feed a multitude,

  105. 20 to 25,000 people.

  106. If there are 5,000 men,

  107. 20 to 25,000 people as they follow him and his disciples along the bank of the Sea of Galilee.

  108. Your creator knows what your soul needs to live.

  109. He made you.

  110. He knows.

  111. And he built you with a hunger in your soul that only he can satisfy.

  112. So I want to show you today two things.

  113. Number one,

  114. the manner in which you must come to Christ.

  115. There's a certain manner in which those who come to him get fed.

  116. And then secondly,

  117. number two,

  118. the means by which you feast on Christ.

  119. We see these two things in this passage.

  120. So first,

  121. the manner in which you come to Christ.

  122. How do you go to Christ?

  123. Well,

  124. first you go to Christ with a hungry soul.

  125. That's simple truth.

  126. It was those that came hungry that Christ fed.

  127. There were probably others that stayed back in the city.

  128. They had plenty.

  129. Their souls were not hungry and they did not get fed by the Lord Jesus.

  130. They did not get to be a participant in the great work he was doing.

  131. New creation work.

  132. And I need you to get the setting in your mind.

  133. If you can travel to Jerusalem in your imagination.

  134. So here's this sea.

  135. They call it a sea because they're a desert people.

  136. They're not used to much water.

  137. The great sea is the Mediterranean.

  138. This sea we see in verses one,

  139. two,

  140. three,

  141. and four.

  142. This is the sea of Galilee.

  143. And the big city on the west side of the seam is Tiberias.

  144. Now I'm going to give you some context here that will be significant.

  145. I believe for what Christ teaches.

  146. Tiberias was a new city.

  147. It wasn't founded and didn't begin being constructed until about the year 20 AD.

  148. So Christ during his lifetime would have seen the city of Tiberias being built up.

  149. The emperor of Rome at the time was named Tiberias.

  150. The Roman Empire dominates this region.

  151. And they put a puppet,

  152. a vassal king over the region in the north of Galilee.

  153. And it was no longer Herod the Great.

  154. Herod the Great was truly great.

  155. I mean,

  156. what he did with architecture and aqueducts,

  157. he created a mini Rome inside this Galilean region.

  158. Herod the Great was incredible.

  159. He was twisted and cruel and killed his own family,

  160. but he was a pretty good dictator.

  161. Now there are other dictators that were lesser.

  162. And so his son was Herod Agrippa.

  163. Herod Agrippa was a fool.

  164. And it was Herod Agrippa who started this city of Tiberias.

  165. Herod Agrippa is important at this time,

  166. even though John here doesn't go into detail.

  167. Herod Agrippa was throwing a feast for the wealthy and for the elite.

  168. And at his feast,

  169. there was drunkenness,

  170. debauchery,

  171. and a teenage girl practicing sensual dancing.

  172. And because John the Baptizer accused Herod Agrippa of his sin,

  173. of taking his brother's wife,

  174. Herod Agrippa has John the Baptist beheaded.

  175. It's that same Herod Agrippa who built this city of Tiberias.

  176. Jesus is traveling in this region.

  177. And so that's our setting.

  178. Now notice we see in our context,

  179. verse 3,

  180. we're told Jesus went up a mountain.

  181. Well,

  182. there are no mountains in this area.

  183. Verse 3,

  184. we read that they were preparing for the Passover.

  185. Well,

  186. the Passover happens in the spring.

  187. That's when we celebrate Easter now.

  188. And so we know that in the springtime,

  189. the waters of the Sea of Galilee,

  190. which was also now changed the name to Sea of Tiberias,

  191. the waters in the springtime recede.

  192. And it leaves a silt plain

  193. where fertile grass will grow on a wide area right next to the sea.

  194. And then climbing up of that,

  195. the bank coming out of the lake

  196. is what you could call a mountain.

  197. So as Jesus and his disciples are in this region,

  198. we get from the other gospels

  199. what else they had been doing.

  200. In Matthew,

  201. we're told that Jesus had just sent his disciples out

  202. on a ministry mission.

  203. He sent them out proclaiming the gospel.

  204. And by his power,

  205. they were performing miracles as well.

  206. Well,

  207. with every disciple that went out,

  208. a group came back following them

  209. and spreading the word to others.

  210. We read in Luke that even as the crowd was following him,

  211. Jesus was performing miracles,

  212. healing and,

  213. you know,

  214. taking care of these sick,

  215. lame and infirm people.

  216. Now,

  217. remember,

  218. this is ancient Israel under the Roman Empire.

  219. And it's about a thousand,

  220. eight hundred years before medical diagnoses existed

  221. or psychological issues

  222. and all kinds of ways in which the human body is broken.

  223. They had no way to be cured of that.

  224. They would die early.

  225. Children were infant mortality,

  226. it was extremely high.

  227. So all those different types of infirmities,

  228. you can imagine this vast multitude

  229. following the disciples in Christ.

  230. It's their only hope.

  231. And these would be the poor.

  232. While here at Agrippa's over here,

  233. having this luxurious feast,

  234. lavishing his wealth on his little inner circle,

  235. the poor,

  236. they're just living a subsistence life.

  237. I mean,

  238. to have a little bit of protein

  239. and a little bit of carbs

  240. to get them enough energy for tomorrow

  241. is all that they really can hope for.

  242. Can you picture that scene on the side of the lake?

  243. Now,

  244. what's the manner in which you go to Christ?

  245. You go to Christ hungry.

  246. These people were hungry physically.

  247. They were also desperate for someone

  248. to reverse this broken system.

  249. Could there be hope beyond my next meal?

  250. And you see,

  251. with the Passover approaching,

  252. these are Jews.

  253. What would they be thinking about with the Passover?

  254. They would be preparing themselves

  255. for a reminder

  256. that we serve a God who will deliver us.

  257. And it's not Egypt any longer.

  258. It's Rome.

  259. And we need a second Moses figure.

  260. And you see the,

  261. how John is painting with these broad strokes

  262. with the scene,

  263. the crowd needing deliverance,

  264. thinking about the Passover.

  265. Jesus goes up a mountain,

  266. we can call it,

  267. and he's teaching them.

  268. In fact,

  269. we read in Mark chapter six,

  270. the same account,

  271. right before he feeds the multitude.

  272. Jesus said to them,

  273. to the disciples,

  274. come away by yourselves to a desolate place

  275. and rest a while.

  276. Jesus was physically tired.

  277. The disciples were tired.

  278. They needed a break.

  279. And for many,

  280. we're coming along and going

  281. and the disciples and Jesus

  282. had no leisure even to eat,

  283. we read in Mark.

  284. And they went away in the boat

  285. to a desolate place by themselves.

  286. Now,

  287. many saw them going and recognized them.

  288. And they ran there on foot

  289. from all the towns

  290. and got ahead of them.

  291. And when they went ashore,

  292. they saw a great cloud,

  293. crowd.

  294. The disciples and Jesus

  295. saw this great crowd coming.

  296. And Jesus had compassion on them.

  297. We read from Mark six.

  298. Because why?

  299. Why did Jesus have compassion

  300. over this multitude?

  301. Because they were like sheep

  302. without a shepherd.

  303. So Jesus begins to feed them,

  304. to look over their souls.

  305. We read in Mark

  306. that he began to teach them

  307. many things.

  308. You know,

  309. when Jesus gave

  310. what's called the sermon

  311. on the mount,

  312. a great multitude gathered.

  313. He went up on a mountain

  314. and sat down.

  315. It's the same language.

  316. Jesus is

  317. the true and greater Moses.

  318. He is the second lawgiver.

  319. He's coming to

  320. declare

  321. the new kingdom of God.

  322. That God is now

  323. inaugurating spiritually.

  324. And what was it

  325. that Jesus proclaimed

  326. in the sermon on the mount?

  327. Matthew 5, 6.

  328. You're blessed,

  329. he said.

  330. Blessed are those

  331. who hunger

  332. and thirst

  333. for righteousness,

  334. for they

  335. shall be

  336. satisfied.

  337. That's what Jesus

  338. is teaching.

  339. Will he be good

  340. to his word?

  341. Will he satisfy them

  342. if they come to him

  343. hungry?

  344. Jesus said

  345. in verse 26

  346. of our text,

  347. Truly, truly,

  348. I say to you,

  349. you are seeking me

  350. not because you saw signs,

  351. but because you ate

  352. your fill of the loaves.

  353. So even as they

  354. continued to follow him

  355. along the coast

  356. of the lake,

  357. they were seeking Christ

  358. with hungry eyes.

  359. They wanted to see signs.

  360. And with hungry stomachs,

  361. they needed food again

  362. the next day.

  363. Just keep following him

  364. around.

  365. He'll provide.

  366. And Jesus

  367. calls true believers

  368. to hunger for him

  369. with your soul.

  370. That's the first way

  371. in which you

  372. come to Christ

  373. is with a hungry

  374. soul.

  375. The second way

  376. you go to Christ

  377. is confessing

  378. your need

  379. of his provision.

  380. We learn this lesson

  381. from a dialogue

  382. between Jesus

  383. and one of his disciples

  384. named Philip.

  385. Look at verse 7.

  386. Picture Jesus

  387. and the disciples.

  388. They're tired.

  389. They're fatigued.

  390. And they had not

  391. had anything

  392. to eat themselves.

  393. We just read.

  394. So he sits there

  395. in the bank

  396. and he looks

  397. at the disciples.

  398. And now we know

  399. his heart is to have

  400. compassion

  401. for the multitude.

  402. And he's fed them

  403. and taught them.

  404. But now he turns

  405. to the disciples

  406. and he asks them,

  407. how are we going

  408. to feed these people?

  409. And Philip says,

  410. we couldn't even do that

  411. with 200 denarii.

  412. How much is that?

  413. If we convert

  414. that currency,

  415. it's one year's wages

  416. for a skilled worker.

  417. And he says,

  418. even then,

  419. they'll just barely

  420. have enough to eat.

  421. We cannot do that,

  422. he says.

  423. Well,

  424. Jesus brought Philip

  425. to confess

  426. his need

  427. for Christ to provide.

  428. See,

  429. he wanted him

  430. to put in his words

  431. what would be very obvious

  432. to everyone else.

  433. Because when Christ

  434. did provide

  435. and multiply the food

  436. and nourish this crowd,

  437. he didn't want Philip

  438. or anyone else

  439. to forget

  440. that they could not

  441. do it on their own.

  442. On their own,

  443. they had a deficit.

  444. They had more than nothing.

  445. They had starving themselves.

  446. They were hungry.

  447. They didn't have enough

  448. for themselves,

  449. much less anything

  450. to give to others.

  451. One ancient commentator,

  452. Chrysostom,

  453. said the reason

  454. he has this dialogue

  455. with Philip

  456. is to drive away

  457. the memory

  458. that he had confessed

  459. so that Philip

  460. could never say,

  461. I forgot that I actually

  462. confessed that to you.

  463. And he would learn

  464. by contrast

  465. the greatness

  466. of the miracle.

  467. Think about it like this.

  468. Jesus has compassion.

  469. He knows these sheep

  470. need food.

  471. They need a shepherd.

  472. And if these are like

  473. the spiritual children

  474. that many will believe in him,

  475. they will be adopted.

  476. He knows the love

  477. of the father.

  478. And he knows the father

  479. wants to nourish his children,

  480. these babies in the faith.

  481. But he will not pour

  482. his father's milk

  483. into cups

  484. unless those cups

  485. are empty.

  486. If those cups

  487. are full of everything else,

  488. then they can't take

  489. the milk that he's going

  490. to provide

  491. from the loving father.

  492. So Philip confesses,

  493. we can't provide.

  494. God must do it.

  495. My encouragement to you

  496. is the same.

  497. Maybe you're feeling

  498. your soul is empty.

  499. your soul is depleted

  500. and it's in need.

  501. That is a blessing.

  502. Blessed are those

  503. who hunger.

  504. You will be satisfied.

  505. If Christ has caused

  506. your soul to hunger,

  507. it's because he is

  508. preparing you

  509. to receive

  510. his provision.

  511. But first,

  512. you must come

  513. to the end

  514. of yourself.

  515. And you must do

  516. like Philip.

  517. You must confess

  518. your deficit

  519. that you need

  520. the provision

  521. of God.

  522. That's really

  523. the simplest

  524. way to explain

  525. what is saving faith.

  526. John Calvin

  527. described faith

  528. like this.

  529. Faith

  530. is a poor beggar's

  531. empty hand

  532. outstretched to God.

  533. That's what faith is.

  534. You don't bring

  535. anything to God

  536. except for your

  537. empty beggar's hand

  538. hungry for him

  539. to provide.

  540. So you must come

  541. to Christ

  542. with a hungry soul.

  543. You must come

  544. to Christ

  545. confessing your need

  546. of his provision.

  547. And number three,

  548. you go to Christ

  549. with faith

  550. in his power

  551. to provide.

  552. Why would you

  553. go to him

  554. if you don't trust

  555. that he will

  556. meet your every need?

  557. Look at verse nine.

  558. They say,

  559. there is a boy here

  560. who has five

  561. barley loaves.

  562. Now the word

  563. loaves,

  564. in Greek

  565. it's arpos.

  566. It's really

  567. a barley wafer.

  568. So you can picture

  569. like a little

  570. barley cracker

  571. that's not going

  572. to perish.

  573. You could carry

  574. it with you

  575. for several days

  576. and it would

  577. still be a good

  578. way to get

  579. some carbs.

  580. And the two fish

  581. most likely

  582. are sardines.

  583. On the lake

  584. of Galilee,

  585. the Sea of Tiberias,

  586. just north of

  587. Tiberias,

  588. is a town,

  589. you can search

  590. it now on your

  591. map.

  592. It's a town

  593. called Migdala

  594. and that's

  595. where Mary Magdalene

  596. is from.

  597. And that city

  598. imported salt

  599. from the Mediterranean

  600. Sea and they

  601. would take

  602. all the fish

  603. that were fished

  604. out of the

  605. lake of Tiberias

  606. or the lake

  607. of Galilee

  608. and they would

  609. stack it

  610. with layers

  611. of salt

  612. and it would

  613. drain out

  614. the moisture

  615. out of the fish

  616. and it would

  617. preserve it

  618. kind of like

  619. beef jerky,

  620. like dried fish.

  621. And even today,

  622. half of all the fish

  623. that is fished

  624. out of the

  625. same Sea of Galilee

  626. is sardines.

  627. And so picture a boy,

  628. it's exactly a lunchable.

  629. It's five little

  630. barley crackers

  631. and two little

  632. dried fish.

  633. That's all he's got.

  634. So the disciples,

  635. I mean,

  636. I'm sure it was

  637. even humorous.

  638. You look out

  639. the crowd,

  640. 5,000 men,

  641. 20,000 adults.

  642. That's if the ball arena

  643. where the Nuggets

  644. play is packed.

  645. 20,000 people.

  646. We have,

  647. you picture the disciples,

  648. we have a lunchable.

  649. You know,

  650. it's a joke among them.

  651. And John,

  652. he doesn't upplay

  653. this miracle.

  654. See,

  655. here's the thing.

  656. No one,

  657. no one at this time

  658. or later discredits

  659. the miracle.

  660. It was obvious

  661. that Christ performed

  662. a miracle.

  663. 20,000 witnesses

  664. not only saw it,

  665. they participated in it.

  666. They tasted it.

  667. No one says

  668. it was not a miracle.

  669. What they have an issue

  670. with is Christ

  671. and his teaching

  672. and his claims.

  673. So this miracle happened.

  674. Again,

  675. as Christians,

  676. we are unashamed

  677. supernaturalists.

  678. And you just,

  679. you have to trust

  680. that God,

  681. taking this little lunchable,

  682. he began distributing

  683. it to them.

  684. That's all John says.

  685. He distributed.

  686. And everyone's eating.

  687. And I bet it was,

  688. it was delicious.

  689. You know,

  690. he's just enjoying it.

  691. And everyone kept eating.

  692. And these are starving,

  693. hungry,

  694. poor people

  695. following him around.

  696. And everyone had their fill.

  697. And there are 12 baskets

  698. left over.

  699. See,

  700. not only does Christ provide,

  701. he shows you,

  702. I have much more

  703. in reserves for you.

  704. If you just come to me hungry,

  705. I will satisfy you.

  706. You come to Christ trusting

  707. he has the power to provide.

  708. See,

  709. what Christ is doing

  710. is fulfilling this pattern

  711. that has been set up all along.

  712. Adam and Eve banished

  713. out of the garden

  714. into the wilderness.

  715. But yet,

  716. even in the wilderness,

  717. God provides.

  718. There's food

  719. they can shepherd.

  720. When God calls Abraham,

  721. he leaves the luxury

  722. of his wealthy father's home.

  723. And he becomes a sojourner,

  724. a man with no land,

  725. traveling in the wilderness.

  726. With Moses,

  727. the people of God

  728. travel in the wilderness.

  729. And God feeds them.

  730. He provides manna.

  731. He even brings birds

  732. that they can eat meat.

  733. Well,

  734. the prophets,

  735. Elijah,

  736. Elisha,

  737. they're chased away

  738. by the wicked kings

  739. living in the wilderness.

  740. And God provides.

  741. So God loves to provide

  742. for his people

  743. in the wilderness.

  744. We're told

  745. by the New Testament apostles,

  746. this life in Christ

  747. right now

  748. for our flesh,

  749. for our body,

  750. it's the wilderness.

  751. But Christ will provide

  752. for you,

  753. his people.

  754. He will feed your soul.

  755. He loves to provide

  756. for you

  757. in the wilderness.

  758. Deuteronomy 8.3 says,

  759. here's why God does that.

  760. He humbles you

  761. and he lets you hunger,

  762. but he feeds you

  763. with manna,

  764. which you did not know,

  765. nor did your fathers know,

  766. that he might make you know

  767. that man does not live

  768. by bread alone,

  769. but man lives by every word

  770. that comes from the mouth

  771. of the Lord.

  772. Our Jesus himself,

  773. our Lord,

  774. experienced this.

  775. And that's exactly

  776. what he recited back

  777. to Satan

  778. under attack

  779. and temptation

  780. in the wilderness.

  781. So you must trust

  782. in his abundance

  783. to provide pardon

  784. for your sins,

  785. to clear your conscience,

  786. to restore your soul,

  787. to reform your life.

  788. He can do it.

  789. He is not a God

  790. who is scanty

  791. and miserly.

  792. He is a God

  793. who has reserves

  794. in store

  795. waiting for you

  796. to come to him

  797. that he can feed you

  798. once again.

  799. Milton Vincent,

  800. a pastor,

  801. reflected on this gospel truth

  802. of God's provision.

  803. He said,

  804. God's heart pulses

  805. only with passionate grace,

  806. which jealously wants me

  807. back in his embrace.

  808. See, forgiveness

  809. has been in God's heart

  810. all along.

  811. And when I approach him

  812. to make right my wrong,

  813. he runs up to greet me

  814. and draws to me near,

  815. embracing and kissing

  816. and ready to clear.

  817. What a generous God we serve.

  818. Your soul will hunger

  819. until you feast on Christ.

  820. Christ.

  821. Well, the fourth observation

  822. on the manner

  823. in which you go to Christ

  824. is you put your body

  825. where Christ will feed

  826. your soul.

  827. Let's read that passage

  828. in John 6,

    John 6:16–21

  829. verses 16 through 21.

  830. When the evening came,

  831. the disciples went down

  832. to the sea.

  833. They got into a boat

  834. and started across the sea

  835. to Capernaum.

  836. See, Capernaum is further north

  837. on the Sea of Galilee.

  838. Remember, they are tired

  839. and this crowd

  840. keeps following them.

  841. And we read that Jesus

  842. had gone out away

  843. into the wilderness

  844. to a desolate place

  845. by himself.

  846. Now the disciples,

  847. they also need to get away

  848. from these crowds

  849. so they get in the boats

  850. to travel north

  851. along the Sea of Galilee.

  852. We read that it was dark now

  853. and Jesus had not yet

  854. come to them.

  855. Verse 18.

  856. The sea became rough

  857. because a strong wind

  858. was blowing.

  859. We know about strong winds

  860. in Colorado.

  861. They'll push over anything.

  862. And the Golem Heights

  863. are just a little bit further

  864. to the north of this region

  865. and it forms a perfect

  866. little tunnel

  867. where the winds gather.

  868. They pick up speed

  869. and they come shooting through

  870. onto the lake

  871. and it creates massive waves.

  872. Now these were Roman fishing boats

  873. and what we know of those

  874. is that they would have had sails

  875. and when the winds were favorable

  876. you could use them.

  877. But with mighty winds

  878. that are against you,

  879. the winds coming

  880. from the north like that,

  881. it's going to send you

  882. in the wrong direction.

  883. They would have put their sails away

  884. and we read them,

  885. they had rowed

  886. about three or four miles

  887. against the wind.

  888. Because you might be wondering,

  889. what does this little story

  890. in the middle of the feeding

  891. of the multitude

  892. have to do with each other?

  893. Are they related or not?

  894. Well, you get the scene.

  895. The disciples too

  896. had to come to the end

  897. of themselves again

  898. and trust God

  899. to be their Savior

  900. and their provider.

  901. They've been rowing.

  902. They've been in fear

  903. and they've had the stress

  904. of laboring in this little fishing boat

  905. not making any progress.

  906. And then they saw Jesus

  907. walking on the sea

  908. and coming near the boat.

  909. What was their reaction?

  910. They were even more frightened.

  911. They used to be afraid of the sea

  912. and they're going to drown.

  913. Now they're afraid

  914. of this appearance

  915. that's walking toward them.

  916. Now remember,

  917. these are fishermen.

  918. They'd seen their buddies

  919. probably die in the waters drowning.

  920. And you know,

  921. fishermen have all kinds of myths

  922. they believe.

  923. We know that this Greco-Roman world,

  924. they believed

  925. and the bodies

  926. of those who had died at sea

  927. would come back as ghosts

  928. and haunt those on the ships.

  929. So for them,

  930. this is probably like

  931. one of their worst nightmares,

  932. a ghost walking on the waters

  933. toward them.

  934. Now notice what Jesus says to them.

  935. Verse 20,

  936. It is I.

  937. Do not be afraid.

  938. In the Greek,

  939. Jesus says to them

  940. what they've heard him say

  941. two other times.

  942. I am.

  943. And then we're told

  944. the waters settle

  945. and instantly the boat

  946. is where they needed to be.

  947. Do you get the picture?

  948. The multitude came empty.

  949. They've got nothing on their own.

  950. He's their only hope.

  951. The disciples,

  952. empty.

  953. Christ,

  954. you are our only hope.

  955. And yet in the midst of that,

  956. I am.

  957. in the image of Christ,

  958. moving on top of the waters.

  959. That should take you back

  960. to Genesis 1 and 2.

  961. The Spirit of God

  962. hovered over

  963. the surface

  964. of the deep.

  965. Jesus Christ,

  966. I am.

  967. The new creation

  968. is coming.

  969. Hear the words of life

  970. from God himself.

  971. He walks

  972. among you.

  973. What did the multitude do?

  974. That's what I want to

  975. apply for us.

  976. Look at verse 24.

  977. When the crowd saw

  978. that Jesus was not

  979. there

  980. in this region

  981. where they were in the south,

  982. nor his disciples,

  983. what did the crowd do?

  984. Here's what we must do.

  985. They themselves

  986. got into the boats

  987. and went to Capernaum

  988. seeking Jesus.

  989. Jesus.

  990. See, as empty as they were,

  991. as messed up

  992. as their lives were,

  993. their bodies were so broken

  994. by the fall,

  995. they found a way

  996. to put their bodies

  997. where Christ could feed them

  998. once again.

  999. And that's the application

  1000. for us.

  1001. You and I,

1002. we need to put our bodies

  1003. where we know Christ

  1004. will feed our soul.

1005. Your flesh will fight it.

1006. You won't want to do it.

1007. You keep putting your body

1008. where you need to be.

  1009. He will show up

  1010. to satisfy you

  1011. again and again

  1012. faster than you can

1013. confess your need of Him.

  1014. He will meet you

  1015. every time

1016. when you're on your knees

  1017. through your tears.

  1018. And you will say,

  1019. just like the disciples

  1020. did in verse 25,

1021. where did He come from?

1022. Where did He come from?

1023. You go to Christ empty.

  1024. So let me recap

  1025. our first point.

  1026. In what way

  1027. do you seek Christ?

1028. If your soul is hungry

  1029. for more of God,

  1030. this is God's kindness

  1031. to you.

  1032. He only stirs up

  1033. hunger in your soul

1034. that He will also satisfy.

  1035. Don't let your mood

  1036. or your weak body

1037. command how your life goes,

  1038. but by faith

  1039. in Christ's strength,

1040. take the steps you need

  1041. to get fleeing

  1042. from temptation

  1043. and running instead

  1044. to Christ.

  1045. Believe that promise

  1046. in verse 35,

1047. I am the bread of life.

  1048. Whoever comes to me

  1049. shall not hunger.

  1050. Whoever believes in me

  1051. shall never thirst.

  1052. Your soul will thirst

  1053. and you will hunger

  1054. unless you are feasting

  1055. on Christ.

1056. This was true of Eve

  1057. in the garden,

  1058. wasn't it?

  1059. Eve believed that lie.

  1060. The lie was this.

1061. My soul won't be satisfied

  1062. unless I eat

  1063. that forbidden fruit.

  1064. It's so good

  1065. to look at.

  1066. My heart desires

  1067. to take it

  1068. and eat it

  1069. more than anything else.

  1070. You see how powerful

1071. the deceit of sin is?

  1072. And the cost

  1073. is so high.

  1074. Think about the result

  1075. for Adam and Eve.

  1076. They were banned

1077. by the sword of God

  1078. from reentering

  1079. the garden

  1080. where all the fruits

  1081. of the garden

  1082. that God himself

  1083. placed there

  1084. for their enjoyment

1085. were laid out for them.

  1086. That's a high cost

  1087. of their sin.

  1088. And because of that

  1089. curse of sin,

  1090. your soul too now

  1091. hungers

  1092. unless you feast

  1093. on Christ.

  1094. But the good news

  1095. for us is this.

  1096. That sword

  1097. that stood between

  1098. sinners

  1099. and the garden

  1100. where bounty

  1101. and abundance

  1102. of food existed,

  1103. Christ took that sword

1104. for you and for me

  1105. who believe in him.

  1106. Christ took the sword

  1107. on the cross

  1108. and he became

  1109. the gate

  1110. back into the garden

  1111. to his father's garden.

  1112. And in his garden

  1113. are the trees

  1114. the spiritual fruit

  1115. of heaven

  1116. already opened up

  1117. and ready

  1118. for you

  1119. to eat.

  1120. He is the gate

  1121. into the orchard.

  1122. The curse of sin

  1123. is still so strong

  1124. that we often feel

  1125. like eating garbage

  1126. rather than

  1127. the spiritual fruit

  1128. of heaven.

  1129. And the filth

  1130. of sin

  1131. it tempts

  1132. our fallen flesh.

  1133. Just like Eve

  1134. the secrecy

  1135. of stealing

  1136. the forbidden fruit

  1137. makes us feel

  1138. like we're free

1139. if I could just do that.

1140. And then we can do

  1141. whatever we want.

  1142. That's the lie.

  1143. And the slimy

  1144. slithering

  1145. Satan

  1146. smiles

  1147. because

  1148. that's exactly

  1149. how he

  1150. enslaved

  1151. God's image bearers

  1152. to sin

  1153. by deceiving them.

  1154. And then the stench

  1155. of sin

  1156. sticks to people.

  1157. And then Satan

  1158. accuses you

  1159. even worse.

  1160. And he says

  1161. God the Father

  1162. he does not

  1163. love you.

  1164. He doesn't

  1165. want you around.

  1166. You stink.

  1167. You smell like sin.

  1168. You can't be near

  1169. the holy God.

  1170. You are

  1171. like the trash

  1172. you eat.

  1173. But Jesus

  1174. came to repel

  1175. the lies

  1176. of Satan

  1177. and to unveil

  1178. to you

  1179. the true nature

  1180. of his Father.

  1181. Look at verse 32.

  1182. Jesus says

  1183. truly truly

  1184. I say to you

  1185. it was not

  1186. Moses who gave you

  1187. the bread from heaven

  1188. but my Father

  1189. my Father

  1190. gives you

  1191. the true bread

  1192. from heaven.

  1193. that's what

  1194. my Father

  1195. is really like.

  1196. So you come

  1197. to God hungry

  1198. and knowing

  1199. that your soul

  1200. needs provisions

  1201. that only he

  1202. can give.

  1203. And his Father

  1204. gives in the

  1205. present active tense

  1206. he gives you

  1207. the bread

  1208. of heaven

  1209. Jesus Christ

  1210. himself.

  1211. So that's why

  1212. you need to put

  1213. your body

  1214. where you know

  1215. he will feed

  1216. your soul.

  1217. And even

  1218. through our bodies

  1219. fallen as we are

  1220. God can stir

  1221. our hearts

  1222. and our affections.

  1223. Some of our liturgy

  1224. you know when we

  1225. stand out of

  1226. reverence for

  1227. God's word

  1228. that's our body

  1229. telling your soul

  1230. this is good

  1231. for you

  1232. you need this.

  1233. And when we

  1234. get low

  1235. even down

  1236. on your knees

  1237. it's you saying

  1238. look I am

  1239. under the

  1240. lawmaker

  1241. the lawgiver

  1242. Jesus Christ

  1243. I need to

  1244. receive from him.

  1245. And when you

  1246. receive the

  1247. benediction

  1248. we stand

  1249. with open arms

  1250. because it's

  1251. our body

  1252. telling our

  1253. soul

  1254. believe

  1255. this

  1256. spiritual

  1257. truth.

  1258. It is

  1259. food for

  1260. your soul

  1261. and your

  1262. soul will

  1263. hunger

  1264. unless you

  1265. feast

  1266. on Christ.

  1267. Well I want

  1268. to

  1269. I promise

  1270. to do this

  1271. quicker.

  1272. I'm going to

  1273. do the four

  1274. ways

  1275. the four

  1276. means by

  1277. which you

  1278. need to

  1279. come to

  1280. Christ.

  1281. Okay

  1282. I don't

  1283. want you

  1284. leaving here

  1285. feeling like

  1286. you can't

  1287. access him.

  1288. You can

  1289. and he

  1290. tells you

  1291. exactly

  1292. how.

  1293. What are

  1294. the means

  1295. by which

  1296. you feast

  1297. on Christ?

  1298. Number one

  1299. you feast

  1300. on Christ

  1301. when you

  1302. hear his

  1303. word.

  1304. Look at

  1305. verse 33

  1306. he tells

  1307. you exactly

  1308. what it

  1309. is.

  1310. The bread

  1311. of God

  1312. is he

  1313. who comes

  1314. down from

  1315. heaven

  1316. and gives

  1317. life to

  1318. the world.

  1319. How do

  1320. you feast

  1321. on God?

  1322. By the

  1323. bread of

  1324. heaven

  1325. by Jesus

  1326. Christ.

  1327. Well how

  1328. do you

  1329. know Jesus

  1330. Christ?

  1331. By the

  1332. word of

  1333. God.

  1334. Jesus

  1335. is the

  1336. bread

  1337. from

  1338. heaven.

  1339. The

  1340. work he

  1341. did in

  1342. his

  1343. flesh,

  1344. in his

  1345. body,

  1346. it is

  1347. the

  1348. substance

  1349. of the

  1350. spiritual

  1351. life for

  1352. your soul.

  1353. And they

  1354. said to

  1355. him in

  1356. verse 34,

  1357. Sir give

  1358. us this

  1359. bread

  1360. always.

  1361. This is

  1362. the same

  1363. truth that

  1364. God has

  1365. always

  1366. revealed

  1367. and always

  1368. shown to

  1369. believers who

  1370. he's given a

  1371. hunger for

  1372. him.

  1373. It's what

  1374. Jeremiah

  1375. confessed in

  1376. Jeremiah 15

  1377. 16.

  1378. Your words

  1379. were found

  1380. and I ate

  1381. them and

  1382. your words

  1383. became to

  1384. me a

  1385. joy,

  1386. the delight

  1387. of my

  1388. heart,

  1389. for I

  1390. am called

  1391. by your

  1392. name,

  1393. O Lord

  1394. God of

  1395. hosts.

  1396. How do

  1397. you feast

  1398. on God

  1399. through his

  1400. word?

  1401. Well you

  1402. take a

  1403. copy of

  1404. the ESV

  1405. Bible right

  1406. there from

  1407. the book

  1408. table,

  1409. you go

  1410. home today

  1411. and you

  1412. turn to

  1413. Philippians

  1414. and you

  1415. read

  1416. Philippians

  1417. 1 today

  1418. as slow

  1419. as you

  1420. like.

  1421. Don't even

  1422. need to

  1423. finish the

  1424. whole chapter,

  1425. it's not

  1426. homework.

  1427. When God

  1428. gives you

  1429. a truth

  1430. in his

  1431. word by

  1432. the help

  1433. of his

  1434. spirit,

  1435. you close

  1436. your eyes

  1437. and you

  1438. pray that

  1439. truth,

  1440. help him to

  1441. teach you

  1442. to understand

  1443. it and you

  1444. work your way

  1445. through the

  1446. book of

  1447. Philippians

  1448. and then talk

  1449. to me and I'll

  1450. tell you the

  1451. next thing I

  1452. want you to

  1453. read and you

  1454. take a book

  1455. from that book

  1456. table and you

  1457. know how much

  1458. of that you

  1459. read?

  1460. Just as little

  1461. as possible

  1462. until you have a

  1463. desire to go

  1464. read more of

  1465. God's word.

  1466. That's what

  1467. good books

  1468. do.

  1469. And you say

  1470. I'm not a

  1471. good reader,

  1472. I'm slow,

  1473. that's okay.

  1474. You can also

  1475. talk to me and

  1476. on our website

  1477. I'll send you

  1478. audio,

  1479. you can listen

  1480. to good audio,

  1481. you know how

  1482. much of a

  1483. good sermon

  1484. or audio

  1485. you listen

  1486. to?

  1487. Just as

  1488. little as it

  1489. needs to

  1490. until it

  1491. makes you

  1492. see I

  1493. need to go

  1494. spend time

  1495. with the

  1496. Lord in

  1497. his word

  1498. and in

  1499. prayer.

  1500. You're

  1501. feeding your

  1502. soul on

  1503. God's word.

  1504. Number two,

  1505. you feast not

  1506. only by his

  1507. word but you

  1508. must feast by

  1509. faith.

  1510. See it's

  1511. possible to be

  1512. very close to

  1513. Jesus and

  1514. starve your

  1515. soul.

  1516. Look at

  1517. verse 35.

  1518. Jesus said to

  1519. them I am the

  1520. bread of life

  1521. whoever comes

  1522. to me shall

  1523. not hunger

  1524. and whoever

  1525. believes in me

  1526. shall never

  1527. thirst.

  1528. But look at

  1529. verse 36.

  1530. I said you

  1531. have seen me

  1532. yet you do

  1533. not believe.

  1534. See putting

  1535. your body

  1536. near where you

  1537. know Jesus

  1538. will be feeding

  1539. is one part

  1540. but you

  1541. must receive

  1542. by faith.

  1543. You can be

  1544. that close to

  1545. him and not

  1546. believe because

  1547. you being in

  1548. church or you

  1549. spending time in

  1550. the Bible in

  1551. prayer that does

  1552. not save you

  1553. or me.

  1554. It's your faith

  1555. that unites you

  1556. to Christ.

  1557. That's the only

  1558. way you are fed

  1559. is through union

  1560. with Christ by

  1561. faith.

  1562. You know why

  1563. you come up here

  1564. in just a moment

  1565. and take the

  1566. Lord's Supper?

  1567. It's because the

  1568. Lord's Supper will

  1569. grow your faith.

  1570. It will strengthen

  1571. your faith where

  1572. you're weak.

  1573. That's what one

  1574. of our catechisms

  1575. says.

  1576. As bread nourishes

  1577. our temporal

  1578. life so too

  1579. his crucified

  1580. body truly

  1581. nourishes our

  1582. soul for eternal

  1583. life.

  1584. Through the Holy

  1585. Spirit's work we

  1586. share in his

  1587. true body.

  1588. All of his

  1589. suffering and

  1590. obedience are as

  1591. definitely ours as

  1592. if we personally

  1593. had suffered and

  1594. paid for our

  1595. sins.

  1596. You are united

  1597. to Christ by

  1598. faith and the

  1599. Lord's Supper

  1600. reinforces that

  1601. glorious truth

  1602. to you.

  1603. You feast on

  1604. his word.

  1605. You feast by

  1606. faith.

  1607. Number three,

  1608. you feast in

  1609. assurance.

  1610. Assurance.

  1611. You will taste

  1612. how the gospel is

  1613. a feast when you

  1614. have assurance of

  1615. your salvation by

  1616. grace alone.

  1617. That's when you

  1618. know that Christ

  1619. will never cast

  1620. you out.

  1621. Look at verse

  1622. 37.

  1623. Jesus says,

  1624. all that the

  1625. Father gives

  1626. me will come

  1627. to me and

  1628. whoever comes

  1629. to me I will

  1630. never cast

  1631. out.

  1632. Never.

  1633. You go to

  1634. Christ again

  1635. and again and

  1636. yes again today

  1637. and you trust in

  1638. God's faithfulness.

  1639. Charles Spurgeon

  1640. said, we come to

  1641. him in weakness

  1642. and in sin with

  1643. trembling faith,

  1644. small knowledge,

  1645. and slender hope,

  1646. but still he does

  1647. not cast us out.

  1648. Look at verse

  1649. 38.

  1650. I have come down

  1651. from heaven not

  1652. to do my own

  1653. will but the will

  1654. of him who sent

  1655. me.

  1656. And what is the

  1657. will?

  1658. Look at verse

  1659. 39.

  1660. This is the will

  1661. of him who sent

  1662. me that I should

  1663. lose nothing of

  1664. all that he has

  1665. given me.

  1666. Spurgeon again,

  1667. we come with

  1668. prayer but those

  1669. prayers are broken.

  1670. We come with

  1671. confession but our

  1672. confession is faulty.

  1673. We come with

  1674. praise but our

  1675. praise falls short

  1676. of his merits.

  1677. Don't you feel

  1678. that even today?

  1679. We come diseased

  1680. and polluted,

  1681. worn out and

  1682. worthless.

  1683. We are no better

  1684. than that ancient

  1685. crowd.

  1686. But still he does

  1687. not cast us out.

  1688. Your soul will

  1689. hunger until you

  1690. feast on Christ.

  1691. Christ.

  1692. How do you know

  1693. that you are one

  1694. that the Father

  1695. gave to Christ?

  1696. How do you know

  1697. that?

1698. You know it by the

  1699. evidence of

  1700. assurance.

  1701. What is the

  1702. evidence of

  1703. assurance?

  1704. It's your

  1705. sanctification.

  1706. And that's my

  1707. fourth point.

  1708. You feast on

  1709. Christ in

  1710. sanctification.

  1711. Sanctification is

  1712. not a burden for

  1713. this life.

  1714. It is preparation

  1715. for eternity.

  1716. Your soul will

  1717. dwell immediately.

  1718. The moment you

  1719. die, the moment

  1720. your body releases

  1721. your spirit, your

  1722. soul will be united

  1723. to Christ if you

  1724. are in him by

  1725. faith and you

  1726. will be with

  1727. Christ for

  1728. eternity.

  1729. That's what

  1730. sanctification is

  1731. preparing you to

  1732. dwell in such a

  1733. way with Christ.

  1734. Look at verse

  1735. 27.

  1736. Jesus says,

  1737. now pay attention

  1738. carefully to his

  1739. words here.

  1740. do not work for

  1741. the food that

  1742. perishes.

  1743. But for, in

  1744. other words, you

  1745. do work to feed

  1746. your soul on

  1747. spiritual food.

  1748. What is that?

  1749. It's the food that

  1750. endures to eternal

  1751. life, which the

  1752. Son of Man will

  1753. give to you.

  1754. You work for that

  1755. that he is giving

  1756. to you.

  1757. He gives it.

  1758. And you work for

  1759. what he's giving

  1760. you.

  1761. He gets all the

  1762. glory.

  1763. But you work for

  1764. what's going to

  1765. last for

  1766. eternity.

  1767. For on him,

  1768. God the Father

  1769. has set his

  1770. seal.

  1771. The hot wax is

  1772. poured.

  1773. The king's signet

  1774. ring stamped down

  1775. on the life of

  1776. everyone given

  1777. to Christ by

  1778. the Father.

  1779. So pay attention

  1780. to this.

  1781. Union to

  1782. Christ.

  1783. This is what it

  1784. all hinges on.

  1785. It is evidenced

  1786. by communion

  1787. communion with

  1788. Christ.

  1789. Union with

  1790. Christ.

  1791. That's the hope

  1792. of your soul

  1793. from life and

  1794. in death.

  1795. It's evidenced

  1796. by, here's the

  1797. fruit of assurance,

  1798. communion with

  1799. Christ.

  1800. Feeding your soul

  1801. on Christ is

  1802. evidence of union

  1803. to him.

  1804. If you are

  1805. united to Christ,

  1806. then God's, the

  1807. Father's seal is

  1808. upon your life.

  1809. And the will

  1810. of the Father

  1811. was what fed

  1812. Jesus.

  1813. In John 4, 34,

  1814. Jesus said,

  1815. my food is to

  1816. do the will

  1817. of my Father.

  1818. And if your

  1819. will is now

  1820. bound up with

  1821. his, that will

  1822. be your desire

  1823. as well.

  1824. Your will will

  1825. be to do the

  1826. will of the

  1827. Father.

  1828. Our remaining

  1829. sin is at

  1830. enmity with

  1831. God.

  1832. It hates to

  1833. do God's

  1834. will.

  1835. If you are

  1836. not saved by

  1837. grace alone

  1838. through faith

  1839. alone,

  1840. sanctification

  1841. sounds like a

  1842. lot of work

  1843. and your

  1844. flesh will

  1845. never want

  1846. to do it

  1847. and you

  1848. will be doomed

  1849. to fail.

  1850. So is there

  1851. any hope?

  1852. The hope is

  1853. this.

  1854. If God has

  1855. given you a

  1856. hunger in your

  1857. soul and he's

  1858. united you to

  1859. his son through

  1860. faith, you now

  1861. are his project.

  1862. He owns your

  1863. sanctification.

  1864. See, Jesus was

  1865. the carpenter.

  1866. He was a

  1867. builder.

  1868. Nazareth is

  1869. only about 11

  1870. miles from

  1871. Tiberias.

  1872. He saw the

  1873. city being

  1874. built.

  1875. He would

  1876. have contracted

  1877. out in all

  1878. the areas

  1879. surrounding that.

  1880. And it

  1881. probably annoyed

  1882. him when

  1883. someone would

  1884. start a

  1885. project and

  1886. then run

  1887. out of money.

  1888. But that's

  1889. exactly what

  1890. Herod Agrippa

  1891. did.

  1892. If you were

  1893. to travel

  1894. through Tiberias,

  1895. you would

  1896. have seen

  1897. these buildings

  1898. only half

  1899. built.

  1900. What a joke

  1901. that was

  1902. compared to

  1903. Herod the

  1904. Great, his

  1905. father, who

  1906. built amazing

  1907. things in the

  1908. style of Rome.

  1909. Herod Agrippa,

  1910. he would

  1911. abandon his

  1912. projects.

  1913. And for a

  1914. carpenter, a

  1915. builder, there's

  1916. nothing more

  1917. annoying,

  1918. unprofessional.

  1919. He knew

  1920. that.

  1921. And at the

  1922. same context,

  1923. Luke 14, 8,

  1924. Jesus says,

  1925. which of you

  1926. desiring to

  1927. build a

  1928. tower, probably

  1929. looking at

  1930. Tiberias in

  1931. this exact

  1932. moment, everyone

  1933. looking and

  1934. knowing exactly

  1935. what Christ is

  1936. talking about,

  1937. who doesn't

  1938. first sit down

  1939. and count the

  1940. cost, whether

  1941. he has enough

  1942. to complete it.

  1943. But listen to

  1944. what God says

  1945. in Philippians 1, 6

  1946. through Paul.

  1947. I am sure

  1948. of this, that

  1949. he who began

  1950. a good work

  1951. in you will

  1952. bring it to

  1953. completion on

  1954. the day of

  1955. Jesus Christ.

  1956. Your

  1957. sanctification is

  1958. his project.

  1959. He is building

  1960. you up as

  1961. his holy

  1962. temple, so he

  1963. will dwell in

  1964. you for

  1965. eternity,

  1966. church.

  1967. That's your

  1968. hope.

  1969. You do not

  1970. have to

  1971. fabricate your

  1972. own spiritual

  1973. food.

  1974. You do

  1975. feed your

  1976. soul on

  1977. the spiritual

  1978. food which

  1979. the Son of

  1980. Man will

  1981. give to you.

  1982. Trust that he

  1983. will.

  1984. Verse 27, he

  1985. will give you

  1986. the food that

  1987. your soul needs

  1988. every day.

  1989. Let me recap

  1990. this point.

  1991. By what means

  1992. can you feast

  1993. on Christ?

  1994. Number one, by

  1995. his word, by

  1996. faith, by the

  1997. evidence of

  1998. assurance, and

  1999. by your growing

  2000. and sanctification.

  2001. You feast on

  2002. the eternal life

  2003. that God has

  2004. laid out for you

  2005. like a banquet

  2006. feast.

  2007. Your soul will

  2008. hunger until you

  2009. feast on

  2010. Christ.

  2011. You rehearse the

  2012. gospel and your

  2013. soul is fed.

  2014. Milton Vincent

  2015. again, how shall

  2016. I thank God for

  2017. this gospel of

  2018. his, a gift that

  2019. keeps giving?

  2020. Each time I

  2021. rehearse, deserve

  2022. it, I don't on

  2023. my holiest day, but

  2024. this is salvation,

  2025. and herein I'll

  2026. stay.

  2027. I want this last

  2028. little illustration

  2029. to be impressed on

  2030. your mind to

  2031. remember this.

  2032. On a piece of

  2033. printer paper, blue

  2034. marker, these words

  2035. were written and

  2036. then taped outside

  2037. of a restaurant on

  2038. the alley side

  2039. facing the

  2040. dumpsters.

  2041. The sign read,

  2042. to the people eating

  2043. to the people eating

  2044. out of my garbage.

  2045. I have more love

  2046. for you than you

  2047. can think.

  2048. Please just come

  2049. in and tell me

  2050. you're hungry.

  2051. I will forever

  2052. give you a fresh

  2053. slice of pizza

  2054. and fresh water

  2055. to drink.

  2056. God bless.

  2057. your soul will

  2058. hunger until you

  2059. feast on Christ.

  2060. But Jesus says

  2061. to you,

  2062. I am the bread

  2063. of life.

  2064. If you come to

  2065. me, you shall

  2066. not hunger.

  2067. Whoever believes

  2068. in me shall

  2069. never thirst.

  2070. Enjoy the bounty

  2071. of God's kingdom.

  2072. Enjoy your fill

  2073. of every spiritual

  2074. fruit he provides.

  2075. make use of all

  2076. the means he has

  2077. given you and

  2078. feast until you

  2079. are completely

  2080. satisfied over

  2081. and over again

  2082. in Christ.

  2083. Christ alone

  2084. is heaven's food

  2085. for your hungry

  2086. soul.
