  1. All right, good morning. I hope you all have had a good

  2. week. Mine has been eventful all the

  3. way up till this morning. I hit my knee so hard on the

  4. hitch on the back of the van picking, doing pickups this

  5. morning. I almost cried, but I didn't

  6. want to have tears in my eyes when I got up here.

  7. So Genesis chapter 22 is where we're going to be this morning.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  8. It reminds me and hopefully one day we'll we'll we'll do it as

  9. our closing song maybe but there's an old old hymn at the

  10. chorus says safely through another week.

  11. God has brought us on our way. Let us now a blessing seek as

  12. we're here in church. So I hope that is your goal this

  13. morning. But God brings us safely through

  14. each week and I hope you recognize that and don't just

  15. presume by, as the Bible says, upon the, upon the grace of God

  16. that he just gets us through another week.

  17. That's, that's definitely from him.

  18. But Genesis chapter 22 is where we're going to be now.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  19. It's going to be quite interactive This morning.

  20. I got a few questions that I want to ask as we go through

  21. this lesson. And I want you to, to think

  22. about it. And we'll get a few answers and

  23. then and then we'll move on with the lesson when we get to those

  24. points. But we're going to talk about a

  25. very, very familiar story this morning, and that is Genesis

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  26. chapter 22. You probably even recognize it.

  27. But Isaac as a type of Christ. And last week we talked about

  28. Melchizedek. There's been a few that maybe

  29. you didn't realize. I didn't realize that was a type

  30. of Christ. Isaac is a very obvious type of

  31. Christ. But there are a few things in

  32. this, in this passage that I want to look at.

  33. Maybe we haven't really noticed before, but go ahead, go to

  34. Genesis 22 if you're not there already.

  35. We're going to read verses one through 14 and then we'll pray

  36. and get into the lesson. Genesis chapter 22 and verse

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  37. one. And it says, and it came to pass

  38. after these things that God did tempt Abraham and said unto him,

  39. Abraham, and he said, behold, here am I, which I'll, I'll

  40. mention this. Now the Bible says that he

  41. doesn't tempt us, but here we have that he tempted Abraham.

  42. And I think we know that just means he tested him.

  43. It's a it's a he's putting him through a test, not to get him

  44. to sin, but to make him stronger or to to lead him in a direction

  45. that he wants him to go. And Abraham said, here am I here

  46. I am. And he said, take now thy son,

  47. thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest and get the end of the

  48. land of Moriah. Now Genesis chapter 21, we just

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  49. had a Isaac being born and now he says take your only your son,

  50. your only son whom thou lovest and get the end of the land of

  51. Morai and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the

  52. mountains, which I will tell thee of.

  53. Now a side note here, when when Abraham left Ur of the Chaldees,

  54. he he left at God's command, but didn't know where he was going.

  55. This is a culmination of the faith of Abraham.

  56. One final Test, I believe he knows exactly where he's going

  57. in this in this passage. He's going to offer his son as a

  58. burnt offering, and he still and he still obeys.

  59. But verse 3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning and saddled

  60. his ass and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac

  61. his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up

  62. and went on to the place of which God had told him.

  63. Then on the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the

  64. place afar off. And Abraham said unto his young

  65. men, Abide you here with the ass, and I, and the lad will go

  66. Yonder and worship and come again to you.

  67. Another interesting verse there we'll talk about.

  68. He had every intention of offering his son for a burnt

  69. offering, that that's what God told him to do.

  70. And in verse 6 or verse 5, he says, And will come again to

  71. you, I am the lad. And Hebrews tells us he, he

  72. figured God would just raise him from the dead.

  73. But anyways, verse 6. And Abraham took the wood of the

  74. burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son.

  75. And he took the fire in his hand, and a knife.

  76. And they went, both of them together.

  77. And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father.

  78. And said, My father, he said, here am I my son.

  79. And he said, Behold the fire in the wood, But where is the lamb

  80. for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God

  81. will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering.

  82. So they went, both of them together, and they came to the

  83. place which God had told him of. And Abraham built an altar

  84. there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son,

  85. and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

  86. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay

  87. his son. And the Angel of the Lord called

  88. unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham.

  89. And he said, Here am I. He said, Lay not thine hand upon

  90. the lad, neither do thou anything unto him.

  91. For now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not

  92. withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

  93. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold behind

  94. him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns.

  95. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a

  96. burnt offering in the stead of his son.

  97. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah Jireh, as it

  98. is said to this day. In the mount of the Lord, it

  99. shall be seen. Interesting passage.

  100. We'll look at that this morning. Let's pray.

  101. Father, I thank you for this day that you've given us guy.

  102. Thank you for bringing us again through another week.

  103. And God, not just that we're surviving through it, but that

  104. we're that we're walking with you and and thriving in it.

  105. And God, I just pray that you would help us to keep our

  106. priorities in order as we heard last week.

  107. God, I pray that there wouldn't be anything in our lives that

  108. we're just not willing to give up, not to be, to have a closer

  109. walk with you. God, I pray that every time we

  110. walk through these doors, it will be with the intentions of,

  111. of drawing closer to you and learning what you have for us

  112. and what your law is for us. And God, I pray that you make

  113. this church and the people that are part of it just a, a, a

  114. force for you and not in pride, but got a force that Satan,

  115. Satan trembles at. And, and that I just pray that

  116. you'd help us as we fight and lead our families and raise our

  117. kids now that you would just give us the strength that we

  118. need to do that as fathers, give us the the wisdom and the the

  119. patience as mothers. And God, I just pray that you

  120. would bless each family that's represented here in this church,

  121. that you would help us as we as we strive to live for you in

  122. Jesus name, I pray, Amen. All right, And I already

  123. mentioned this, but Genesis chapter 22 and verse one, I

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  124. wanted to point that out. God did tempt Abraham.

  125. It says right there at the end of the verse.

  126. And I, and I think it's important to note, I had a

  127. conversation with a couple guys at work this week and one of

  128. them was saying I just don't believe he's, he claims to be an

  129. atheist. I don't I don't think he is.

  130. He's more agnostic than atheist, but he said, he said, I don't

  131. think that a God could exist and rule and be in charge of the

  132. world that would allow all this bad stuff to happen to people.

  133. And of course, that's the next question.

  134. Why would God allow this to happen to people?

  135. Things, things to happen to people.

  136. And, and it's very clear here. He's tempting, he's testing.

  137. And I do believe God does put things or allow things in the

  138. life of the unsaved to draw them to himself, to point them to

  139. Christ. But in the lives of the saved,

  140. it's absolutely what it's for. It's to strengthen us.

  141. And I wrote this down, God tests us to reveal the good things.

  142. Satan tempts us to bring out the evil.

  143. And that's how you, that's kind of how you know, is it a test or

  144. is it a temptation? If it's tempting you to sin,

  145. that's Satan. If it's testing you to to prove

  146. your faith, that's God. And that's exactly what's

  147. happening here with Abraham. God says in verse 12 of chapter

  148. 22 for now I knowest that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast

  149. not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

  150. God was testing him to see I've I've blessed you because you

  151. have followed me, but where, how how strong is this faith that

  152. you've got? He's willing to give his only

  153. son and God stops him and says, OK, now I know that that you

  154. fear me, but I think it's important to know this that in

  155. our in our testing. I think sometimes, myself

  156. included, and maybe maybe I'm the only one, but I think

  157. sometimes we get into a test and we gripe and we complain about

  158. it and we get through it and go, oh man, God got me through that.

  159. But the whole time we, we griped through it.

  160. And I think it's important that in our testing, in our in, in

  161. the test that God gives us that we bring glory to him.

  162. That's what they're for. And so be careful of your of

  163. your attitude and your mindset in those times to bring glory to

  164. God. And that's what Abraham does

  165. here. He doesn't, he doesn't go tell

  166. anybody what he's about to do. You know, I think if it was us

  167. and you wouldn't believe, on Tuesday I got to go take my son

  168. and I got to offer him up for a burnt offer.

  169. Everybody in the church would know about it.

  170. And I'm not making fun of anybody.

  171. That's what I would do. We love to talk about what we're

  172. going through and that's fine. The Bible tells us to bear one

  173. another's burdens and all of that.

  174. But Abraham doesn't tell anybody what's going on.

  175. He's got it all inside. He's bearing it himself because

  176. this is a test that God, God is giving him.

  177. And then he does give glory. He brings glory to God.

  178. He gives glory, but he brings glory to God because God stops

  179. him and says, now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou

  180. hast not withheld thy Son. So be careful in your testing to

  181. bring glory to God. But here's where I have a

  182. question for you. Go to John chapter 8, John

John 8 chapter mention John 8 chapter mention

  183. chapter 8 and verse 56. And these are not deep

  184. theological questions, but I hope these are questions that

  185. you have when you read through maybe a passage like this.

  186. Jesus is talking and just a quick background, He's talking

  187. to the leaders and they said, are you greater than our Father

  188. Abraham? I mean who?

  189. Who are you? Are you, are you that great?

  190. Are you greater than Abraham? And you may see that probably in

  191. verse 53, I think. Yeah, verse 53 of John chapter

    John 8 chapter mention

  192. 8. Art thou greater than our father

  193. Abraham, which is dead and the prophets are dead who make us

  194. thou thyself? So who?

  195. Who are you? Jesus answered, If I honor

  196. myself, my honor is nothing. It is my father that honoreth

  197. me, of whom you say that he is your God, yet you have not known

  198. him. But I know him, and if I should

  199. say I know him not, I should be a liar like unto you, but I know

  200. him, and I keep his sayings. Verse 56.

  201. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it and

  202. was glad. So my question for you is, what

  203. is? What is that talking about?

  204. Did Abraham see Christ? I mean no, he lived thousands of

  205. years before Christ. So what is it saying in verse

  206. 56? Abraham rejoiced to see my day

  207. and he saw it and was glad. Any any thoughts for the Todd?

  208. Yeah, well, if you, if you go to Genesis 22, I don't think he saw

  209. an Angel at all. He just heard an Angel.

  210. And I'm not not saying you're wrong.

  211. We're talking here, but in verse.

  212. Let's see verse 11. And the Angel of the Lord called

  213. unto him out of heaven and said Abraham, Abraham.

  214. So he didn't see an Angel, but he did hear one.

  215. Any other thoughts? Messiah.

  216. Yeah. Yeah, OK with Johnny.

  217. OK, good. Anything else?

  218. All right, if you're agreeing with Miss Maxine and brother

  219. Johnny, I believe you're correct.

  220. I think that's exactly what it says in Hebrews Chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  221. It says Abraham believed and it was counted unto him for

  222. righteousness. Believed what?

  223. That the in the sacrifices? No, I think that Abraham

  224. realized this was the picture of the Messiah that was coming and

  225. he believed that. And so in John chapter 8, Christ

    John 8 chapter mention

  226. tells them, Abraham, I already closed my Bible.

  227. Where is it at your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day

  228. and he saw it and was glad is a picture of of the coming

  229. Messiah. So I I believe you are correct

  230. on that. And then it says, well, I'll get

  231. to that in a second. But yes, Abraham rejoiced to see

  232. what will Christ was going to do and he saw it in the type of his

  233. son Isaac. So let's get right into our

  234. lesson. That was all that was all

  235. introduction. So Isaac the son and I and I see

  236. first of all here his character. I'm going to be going back and

  237. forth a little bit between Genesis 22 and Hebrews 11.

  238. So if you can keep a finger in Hebrews 11 or a bookmark or

  239. something, we won't reference it a ton, but we will be there a

  240. few times. So Hebrews Chapter 11 and

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  241. Genesis chapter 22. So I have another question for

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  242. you. In Genesis chapter 22, it says

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  243. take now thy son, thine only son Isaac was Isaac, Abraham's only

  244. son. So what is he talking about

  245. there? Any thoughts on that?

  246. We'll come back to that in a second.

  247. Think about it. Yes, Sir.

  248. Does that mean he did not know what he was going to do?

  249. No, I think that. So God is God is all knowing,

  250. right? He obviously knew.

  251. But we do have a free will. Abraham at any point could have

  252. stopped and said, and you know what, I can't go through with

  253. this. I, I, I believe you will.

  254. I and I say, I've said this before, our actions betray what

  255. we actually believe. What I'm saying is this is God

  256. says, now I know you're right, but he didn't know before.

  257. I think another one way to say that is now you've proved that

  258. you fear God. God knew it.

  259. But Abraham, like I said, could have stopped at any point and

  260. God, he goes all the way through with it.

  261. And God says, OK, now you've proved that you fear God, don't,

  262. don't kill your son. So, but anyways, all right, So

  263. Hebrews Chapter 11, verse 18, I think, OK, any any thoughts on

    Hebrews 11:18

  264. that? I forgot I asked the question

  265. that it says in Genesis 22 that take thy son, thy only son,

  266. Isaac. What we know he had more than

  267. one son. So, Josh?

  268. OK, dot, same. Anything else?

  269. Everybody got the same idea. Yeah.

  270. Yeah. I think he was the A He was the

  271. only legitimate son of Abraham, but he was also the only son

  272. that that really mattered. And I don't mean that in a bad

  273. way. Ishmael never should have been

  274. there. He was.

  275. God didn't kill him, but but Ishmael was a curse to this day

  276. on the children of Israel. But yes, he was the he was the

  277. son of promise, the one that the that the promises were going to

  278. come through. So the one that really, really

  279. mattered. Take that son, Johnny.

  280. Yeah, wouldn't it be nice if Genesis 22 said thine only

  281. begotten Son, But it's not right, right?

  282. That's right. And that's where I was going

  283. next. We were all we were given power

  284. to become the sons of God. So how is he the only begotten

  285. son of God because he is he is the son of promise.

  286. We are we give him power, but he is the son of God, just like

  287. Isaac was the son of Abraham, the one that all the promise

  288. promises were going to come through very good.

  289. All right, so that is the son, Isaac the son.

  290. But here's the calling in Genesis chapter 17.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  291. You're close to there. Genesis 17.

  292. I got to leave a bookmark or I'm going to be fumbling around here

  293. in a second, but Genesis chapter 17 and I just want to make a

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  294. quick point on this and remember Isaac is a type of Christ, not

  295. just this story is a type of Christ.

  296. Isaac himself is a type of Christ.

  297. And so all the way through Isaac's life, then you're going

  298. to see a whole bunch of about similarities.

  299. And we see in Genesis chapter 717 verse 19, when and when,

  300. when Sarah is told that she's going to have a son.

  301. And God said, Sarah, thy wife shall bear a son indeed.

  302. And thou shalt call his name Isaac.

  303. And I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting

  304. covenant and with his seed after him.

  305. But but the point I want to make here is that God told them what

  306. they were going to name their son.

  307. They didn't get to choose it in the same way.

  308. Matthew chapter one, verse 21. She shall bring forth a son and

  309. shalt thou shalt call his name Jesus.

  310. His name was was was given before his actual birth, before

  311. he was even conceived. They God told them what his name

  312. would be and what's the importance of what?

  313. What does the name Isaac mean? I think most of us know that

  314. laughter because Sarah laughed when the Angel told her you're

  315. going to have a son. She laughed.

  316. Yeah, OK, am I being old and and barren anyways?

  317. Am I going to have a son? And but that laughter did turn

  318. to joy. It was a laughter at first of

  319. not a mocking God, but a laughing at this at the whole

  320. scenario. Yeah, OK, but when Isaac was

  321. born, there was there was joy. And and we have the same thing

  322. with Jesus Christ birth in Luke chapter one, verse 47.

  323. My spirit hath rejoiced. Actually, that's not the verse I

  324. wanted to to to give you. Well I will that's Mary talking.

  325. My spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.

  326. And I've got a side note there. Pastor just talked about this I

  327. think on Sunday night and I can't remember the context, but

  328. he said that even Mary called Jesus Christ her savior.

  329. And I think it was in context with the Catholic Church being

  330. being wrong that they deify Mary.

  331. She calls Jesus Christ here in Luke chapter 1 her savior.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  332. But the point I wanted to make here was there was great joy

  333. with Isaac's birth. There was great joy.

  334. In fact, the angels of heaven came down to rejoice with the

  335. birth of Jesus Christ. So many, many similarities.

  336. And we're, and we'll get even even more pointed similarities

  337. here in just a little bit. Not it's not just similar, it's

  338. a picture. It's a type of Christ.

  339. Isaac is. So then we have the coming of

  340. Isaac. And for this I want you to go to

  341. Genesis chapter 18, Genesis chapter 18 in verse 11.

Genesis 18 chapter mention Genesis 18 chapter mention

  342. And what I want you to see here is that both the birth of Christ

  343. and the birth of birth of Isaac were supernatural.

  344. They were miracles. Verse 11 of chapter 18.

  345. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age.

  346. Now you have an early Genesis, 430 years old.

  347. This guy started having kids, right?

  348. So it wasn't abnormal. Now it's abnormal.

  349. This is after the flood. They, they don't live nearly as

  350. long as they did in early in the early parts of Genesis.

  351. There. So now Abraham and Sarah were

  352. old and well stricken at age, and it ceased to be with Sarah.

  353. After the manner of woman, she's not able to bear children

  354. anymore. Therefore Sarah laughed within

  355. herself, saying, After I am waxed old, shall I have

  356. pleasure, my Lord, being old also?

  357. And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh,

  358. saying, Shall I have a surety bear a child which I'm old?

  359. Is anything too hard for the Lord at the time appointed?

  360. I will return unto thee according to the time of life,

  361. and Sarah shall have a son. But this is a miraculous birth

  362. of Isaac. I mean, even Sarah and Abraham

  363. are going. No chance.

  364. It's not happening. But Jesus Christ was born of a

  365. virgin. That's a miraculous birth.

  366. And that's all we'll say about that.

  367. Both of them are supernatural births.

  368. But then we have the purpose of Isaac's birth.

  369. And what was the purpose of Isaac's birth?

  370. We saw that just now in Genesis chapter 18, to fulfill the

    Genesis 18 chapter mention

  371. promise that was given to Abraham, to bring a nation to

  372. Abraham as the sands of the sea and as the stars of the sky.

  373. God told Abraham in that promise.

  374. And so to give life to a nation. And Jesus Christ birth was this

  375. for the same purpose, to give life not just to a nation, but

  376. to the entire world, to us even as Gentiles, that we can have

  377. eternal life through this only begotten Son.

  378. So that was Isaac the Son. And now let's look at Isaac the

  379. sacrifice in Genesis 22 here. Isaac on the altar is, I mean,

  380. you don't even have to look into it to see the type of Christ

  381. here. I mean it is a very, very

  382. obvious type of the sacrifice that was going to happen on

  383. Calvary. And I want to look at something

  384. here, a phrase in verse, verse 8 of chapter 22.

  385. And Abraham said, my son, God will provide himself a lamb for

  386. a burnt offering. And I think you can look at that

  387. in three ways. When I don't know if any of you

  388. men, I know some of you were, but I don't know who all was in

  389. the hermeneutics class that pastor taught for the men how to

  390. how to study and how to preach God's word and, and what are you

  391. looking at? And there are phrases in the

  392. Bible that I think I've preached a message.

  393. Now I can't remember what the phrase was, but there was only

  394. four words and each point was one of those words.

  395. I think this is kind of the same way God will provide himself a

  396. lamb. You can look at this phrase a

  397. few different ways. God will provide it.

  398. It's it's the sources from God, right?

  399. So God will provide it. The second way you can look at

  400. it, and I'm not saying interpret this different ways.

  401. I think this is all in this in this statement that God will

  402. provide himself a lamb is that there was a necessity of the

  403. lamb. It had to be there.

  404. And so he will provide it, but he'll provide for us for the

  405. redemption of mankind, a lamb. But the third way I think that

  406. that we can look at this is because there's no punctuation

  407. here. God will provide himself as the

  408. Lamb, right? And so I think very easy to see

  409. that God, God himself is the lamb that he's going to provide.

  410. And so go to look at look at verse 2 of Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  411. The passion here between father and son is what I want to see.

  412. Abraham loved Isaac very much, unlike Ishmael.

  413. He cared for Ishmael, but he didn't love Ishmael like he

  414. loved Isaac. And we see that that parallel

  415. with the the love of the Father and Jesus Christ.

  416. When Christ is in the garden and he's sweating drops of blood and

  417. he's praying to the Father to let this cup pass from me.

  418. I think there's a few things going on there.

  419. I think more important, I think probably the strongest one there

  420. is not. He wasn't afraid of the

  421. suffering. I think we can say that he

  422. wasn't afraid of, Granted, he was a man, he wasn't happy with

  423. being beaten and his beard ripped out, but that's not what

  424. he was afraid of. Even martyrs have gone through

  425. stuff like that with a smile on their face because of the glory

  426. that's being given to God. So I don't think Jesus was

  427. sweating great drops of blood because of the the suffering

  428. that was coming. I think there's two things.

  429. One, the sin that he was going to have to bear.

  430. He had never known sin and he's asking the Father if you can

  431. please let this not happen. Nevertheless, not my will.

  432. But the second thing is the Father.

  433. He knew the Father was going to turn his back on him, that that

  434. relationship had never from eternity past been broken.

  435. And now it's that's about to happen.

  436. And so I think the parallel here, the type here is the love

  437. that Isaac has for his son and he's going to have to sacrifice

  438. him is the same love that Christ that God had for his son, Jesus

  439. Christ. And he's going to have to

  440. sacrifice him for the sins of mankind.

  441. And we don't really see that, that that bond of love between

  442. father and son really anywhere else in the Bible.

  443. We we have many fathers and sons.

  444. You think of Saul and Jonathan and David and and Absalom when

  445. he cries after Absalom is killed.

  446. Absalom, my son Absalom would to God.

  447. But the love between Isaac and and and Abraham here is a is a

  448. is a type of the love between the father and the son.

  449. And in John chapter 17, don't go there, but John chapter 17 and

John 17 chapter mention John 17 chapter mention

  450. verse 24 kind of gives us a picture of the bond of love, the

  451. relationship that was about to be broken when Christ took on

  452. the sins of the world. John chapter 17 and verse 24

    John 17 chapter mention

  453. says this. For Father I will that they also

  454. whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am, that they may

  455. behold my glory which Thou hast given me.

  456. For Thou lovest me before the foundation of the world.

  457. This is Christ praying. Thou loved me before the

  458. foundation of the world. So for eternity past this

  459. relationship was there and now it's about to be broken and

  460. Isaac and and Abraham are are a perfect picture of that Now

  461. Genesis chapter 22 back in in our our text in verse 6, we have

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  462. a a partnership here. Not only did they love each

  463. other, they, they spent time together and they and they had a

  464. had a relationship. In verse 6, it says and Abraham

  465. took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it upon Isaac

  466. his son. And he took the fire in his hand

  467. and a knife and they went both of them together.

  468. Now I think sometimes we get the picture.

  469. Isaac didn't know what was going on here.

  470. I'm sure they had sacrificed many times before together just

  471. as just as Adam would have, would have shown Cain and Abel

  472. how how to sacrifice to God. And that's why Cain was was

  473. judged for his his sacrifice. Abraham would have done thing

  474. the same thing for Isaac. So Isaac thinks nothing of it.

  475. And I'm sure, you know, I think in our minds, we see them

  476. walking up this mountain and it's it's somber.

  477. They're both you know, they're going up to their death.

  478. Isaac didn't know that Abraham may have been a little more

  479. serious, but I think that it would have been this a

  480. conversation as any father and son would have had going out,

  481. you know, to maybe to church. You know, you're not somber on

  482. your way to church, man, this is going to be tough, you know,

  483. unless you're about to get church discipline or something.

  484. I'm just kidding. But but they weren't, they were

  485. not somber. They were having a conversation.

  486. They were doing this together in communion.

  487. And that's all the way through the life of Jesus Christ.

  488. You, you see that in the Gospels where Jesus goes out and he

  489. prays and he has communion with the Father.

  490. It was a perfect relationship. And because Abraham and Isaac

  491. are human, I'm sure it wasn't perfect, but it was very, very

  492. good communion. And so they have this

  493. partnership. But then I want to look real

  494. quickly at the purpose. What was the purpose of Genesis

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  495. chapter 22? When we punish our kids, we

  496. don't punish them to death. But when we punish our kids for

  497. something they've done wrong, it's their fault, right?

  498. They have something that they did wrong.

  499. Or maybe maybe we've had a bad day at work and we come home and

  500. you know, everybody feels the wrath and they didn't even do

  501. anything. But you know, I'm wrong, but

  502. they feel it. We don't have that here.

  503. Isaac did nothing wrong and the father wasn't punishing him.

  504. So, So what is that? It's what we have with Jesus

  505. Christ and God the Father. God wasn't mad at his son and

  506. Jesus did nothing wrong. Perfect type.

  507. And I'm trying to hurry through this so we can get get all the

  508. way through it, but it's a perfect type of what was what

  509. was going to happen. And that's why in Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  510. Chapter 11, we or John chapter 8, we see Abraham saw what was

    John 8 chapter mention

  511. coming and he rejoiced in it. And we'll see here in just a

  512. second exactly when, when I think Abraham finally realizes

  513. what exactly is going on here. But I think it's important to

  514. note that in let's see verse 6. And Abraham took the wood of the

  515. burnt offering and laid it upon Isaac his son.

  516. Perfect picture of the cross being laid on Jesus Christ.

  517. And then he took the fire in his hand and a knife and they both,

  518. they went both of them together. And through the Bible, you'll

  519. see this. But the knife points to death

  520. and the fire points to judgment. And Abraham has both of those.

  521. And so the same way that Jesus Christ carried the cross and

  522. the, and the father had the death and judgment in his hand

  523. of what was about to come. And I don't think these are

  524. stretches at all. I think this is very, very

  525. obviously a picture of of Christ and what was coming.

  526. Let's see, let's keep on moving. All right now, I want to look

  527. real quickly and I already mentioned this, but I want to

  528. look real quickly at Isaac. What is Isaac's part here?

  529. Isaac at this point. Now remember Genesis chapter

  530. 2021, Isaac is born. We have all that Genesis chapter

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  531. 22. Now, Isaac is a young man and

  532. remember, Abraham is an old man. He's old and well stricken in

  533. years. And so I think the point here

  534. that's important to note is that do you think Isaac could have

  535. gotten away if he wanted to? Absolutely.

  536. Isaac, when he realizes what's going on, where, where's the

  537. lamb? God will provide himself a lamb.

  538. Here. Come here, let me bind your

  539. hands and feet. I think Isaac said OK, he could

  540. have stopped it and and Jesus Christ being the God of the

  541. universe Incarnate could have stopped this, but we saw that in

  542. the garden nevertheless. Not my will, but thine a very

  543. obvious type of Christ and what was coming.

  544. I think it's also important to note here that Isaac is

  545. completely alone as the sacrifice.

  546. There's no men with them. Remember they left all the men

  547. at the bottom of the mountain. His father is not with him.

  548. His father's about to kill him and Jesus Christ was the same

  549. way. All the disciples have fled.

  550. His own father has turned his back on him.

  551. Christ is burying this sacrifice alone.

  552. And I think Genesis chapter 22, it's purposely this way.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  553. It's not just said this way. It's this was done on purpose as

  554. a pointing, as a type of what Christ was going to do.

  555. Now I got one point left and we got about 5 minutes.

  556. So I want to, I want to make sure we get through this.

  557. So all right, in Genesis chapter 22 in verse verse 11 is where it

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  558. starts. Angel, the Lord called him to

  559. him out of heaven, said Abraham. Abraham said, here am I lay not

  560. thine hand upon the land. This is where the picture sort

  561. of breaks down. Jesus was not spared.

  562. Isaac is spared. So So what do we have going on

  563. here? And I want to look at that just

  564. for a second. I think that OK and I have one

  565. more question for you. It is in is in Hebrews Chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  566. 11. So if you're still if you still

  567. got that, go to Hebrews Chapter 11 and verse 19.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  568. Yeah. So verse 17 by faith Abraham

  569. when he was tried offered up Isaac, he did offer him.

  570. He didn't kill him, but he definitely offered him.

  571. He's on the altar bound and ready to to slay him when the

  572. Angel stops him. So he did offer him up and that

  573. he had received the promises offered up.

  574. OK, sorry, offered up Isaac. And he that had received the

  575. promises that Isaac would become a great nation offered up his

  576. only begotten Son, of whom it was said that in Isaac shall thy

  577. seed be called. And here's where in verse 19

  578. accounting or assuming that God was able to raise him up even

  579. from the dead from whence also he received him in a figure.

  580. So my question here is what does that mean?

  581. He received him in a figure he didn't receive him figuratively.

  582. So what is what is that saying? What do what do you think that

  583. is saying Hebrews Chapter 11, verse 19.

    Hebrews 11:19

  584. What is that figure that it's talking about?

  585. Anybody. All right, I'm going to tell

  586. you. So in Genesis chapter 2, the

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  587. type seems to break down. Isaac is spared.

  588. But what I think we actually have going on here is a figure

  589. of the resurrection of what? Christ what?

  590. What was going to happen when Christ is resurrected and then

  591. he ascends? Where does he go?

  592. To the Father. And we have the same thing here

  593. with Isaac. He is not literally resurrected,

  594. but figuratively He was. He was dead.

  595. He he was done and figuratively he is resurrected and and

  596. brought back in perfect fellowship with the father.

  597. And I think not just that. I think, I think it's very clear

  598. that the Bible is, is saying that without actually killing

  599. Isaac. Why did God not let Abraham kill

  600. Isaac and raise him from the dead?

  601. I don't know, but he didn't he stopped him.

  602. And then it says in Hebrews 11 as a figure, he resurrected him

  603. figuratively. And I think that's important to

  604. know that the type breaks down there.

  605. But I but I don't think it's, it's not an accident.

  606. It's on purpose to to point out the resurrection.

  607. This is this is also very interesting and I think we'll

  608. finish with this point. Genesis chapter 22 and verse 4.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  609. When does all this happen? The third day.

  610. That's not an accident. This is a type of what Christ

  611. was going to do. Then on the third day, Abraham

  612. lifted up his eyes and saw that place afar off.

  613. And all this happens on the third day, the resurrection of

  614. figuratively of Isaac and, and all of that.

  615. So we'll close with this very, very strong type of Christ.

  616. I don't think there's any argument that, that, that, that

  617. this is not a type of Christ. We're going to look at look at

  618. a, a different 1 next week. And if you want to study up on

  619. it a little bit, right this passage down, it's Leviticus

    Leviticus 14 chapter mention

  620. chapter 14 verses one through 7. But the two birds being

  621. sacrificed are a type of Christ. We're going to look at that next

  622. week. But I want to close with this.

  623. In Genesis 22, verse 7, Isaac spake unto Abraham his father,

    Genesis 22:7

  624. and said, my father. He said, here am I my son.

  625. And he said, behold the fire in the wood.

  626. But where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

  627. And in direct contrast to that today we don't ask where is the

  628. lamb? John said, behold the lamb which

  629. taketh away the sin of the world.

  630. In this type, we had them looking for the lamb and, and,

  631. and Abraham having faith that God would provide himself a

  632. lamb. He will do it.

  633. And then he did provide himself a lamb.

  634. And that's the one that we worship even now, the one that

  635. was sacrificed for us and sits on the right hand of the father,

  636. the Lamb and he's coming back as the conquering king.

  637. But he he went out as as the lamb, the sacrificed lamb.

  638. And I have a whole lot more that I want to say, but I think we

  639. get the point here. Isaac is a type of Christ.

  640. And so very good Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  641. There's a whole lot there, but it's Hebrews Chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  642. The end of that chapter is all about Isaac and and Abraham or

  643. the middle of the chapter there. So you can go back and look at

  644. that this week in your devotions and spend a little more time

  645. studying that. But Isaac as a type of Christ.

  646. Let's pray and then we'll be finished.

  647. Father, I thank you for this day you've given us got to thank you

  648. that the Old Testament is just full of of the proof that from

  649. the foundation of the world. This was this was the plan.

  650. This was not a man sinned and then a redemption plan had to be

  651. coming up come up with from the foundation of the world.

  652. Your son was planned to be sacrificed for mankind and I

  653. thank you for that God, I thank you for where we see in in as

  654. we've talked about before in Genesis 5.

  655. The plan was there, all the genealogies pointing to the

  656. Messiah that would come now here in Genesis 22, Isaac pointing to

  657. the Messiah that would come and even back in the Old Testament,

  658. it being counted to the to the to the those that were saved

  659. then that they believed in the coming Messiah and God.

  660. I just pray that you'd help us now that we are looking back.

  661. I think in some ways it's easier for us.

  662. We've seen the Messiah come. We've seen him be sacrificed and

  663. resurrected and now we just have to believe.

  664. And God, I just pray that you would help us as we study your

  665. word on our own and in church and and wherever we get a chance

  666. that we would see you pointing the see the word of God pointing

  667. to you and it would draw us closer to you.

  668. God, I pray that we'd have just a great fellowship and a great

  669. relationship with you. Pray that you be with the next

  670. hour that you be with our pastor as he preaches that you'd fill

  671. them with your power. But God, I pray that you would

  672. feed us from your word. In Jesus name I pray.

  673. Amen.
