Isaac; a Type of Christ

All right, good morning. I hope you all have had a good

week. Mine has been eventful all the

way up till this morning. I hit my knee so hard on the

hitch on the back of the van picking, doing pickups this

morning. I almost cried, but I didn't

want to have tears in my eyes when I got up here.

So Genesis chapter 22 is where we're going to be this morning.

It reminds me and hopefully one day we'll we'll we'll do it as

our closing song maybe but there's an old old hymn at the

chorus says safely through another week.

God has brought us on our way. Let us now a blessing seek as

we're here in church. So I hope that is your goal this

morning. But God brings us safely through

each week and I hope you recognize that and don't just

presume by, as the Bible says, upon the, upon the grace of God

that he just gets us through another week.

That's, that's definitely from him.

But Genesis chapter 22 is where we're going to be now.

It's going to be quite interactive This morning.

I got a few questions that I want to ask as we go through

this lesson. And I want you to, to think

about it. And we'll get a few answers and

then and then we'll move on with the lesson when we get to those

points. But we're going to talk about a

very, very familiar story this morning, and that is Genesis

chapter 22. You probably even recognize it.

But Isaac as a type of Christ. And last week we talked about

Melchizedek. There's been a few that maybe

you didn't realize. I didn't realize that was a type

of Christ. Isaac is a very obvious type of

Christ. But there are a few things in

this, in this passage that I want to look at.

Maybe we haven't really noticed before, but go ahead, go to

Genesis 22 if you're not there already.

We're going to read verses one through 14 and then we'll pray

and get into the lesson. Genesis chapter 22 and verse

one. And it says, and it came to pass

after these things that God did tempt Abraham and said unto him,

Abraham, and he said, behold, here am I, which I'll, I'll

mention this. Now the Bible says that he

doesn't tempt us, but here we have that he tempted Abraham.

And I think we know that just means he tested him.

It's a it's a he's putting him through a test, not to get him

to sin, but to make him stronger or to to lead him in a direction

that he wants him to go. And Abraham said, here am I here

I am. And he said, take now thy son,

thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest and get the end of the

land of Moriah. Now Genesis chapter 21, we just

had a Isaac being born and now he says take your only your son,

your only son whom thou lovest and get the end of the land of

Morai and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the

mountains, which I will tell thee of.

Now a side note here, when when Abraham left Ur of the Chaldees,

he he left at God's command, but didn't know where he was going.

This is a culmination of the faith of Abraham.

One final Test, I believe he knows exactly where he's going

in this in this passage. He's going to offer his son as a

burnt offering, and he still and he still obeys.

But verse 3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning and saddled

his ass and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac

his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up

and went on to the place of which God had told him.

Then on the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the

place afar off. And Abraham said unto his young

men, Abide you here with the ass, and I, and the lad will go

Yonder and worship and come again to you.

Another interesting verse there we'll talk about.

He had every intention of offering his son for a burnt

offering, that that's what God told him to do.

And in verse 6 or verse 5, he says, And will come again to

you, I am the lad. And Hebrews tells us he, he

figured God would just raise him from the dead.

But anyways, verse 6. And Abraham took the wood of the

burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son.

And he took the fire in his hand, and a knife.

And they went, both of them together.

And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father.

And said, My father, he said, here am I my son.

And he said, Behold the fire in the wood, But where is the lamb

for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God

will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering.

So they went, both of them together, and they came to the

place which God had told him of. And Abraham built an altar

there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son,

and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay

his son. And the Angel of the Lord called

unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham.

And he said, Here am I. He said, Lay not thine hand upon

the lad, neither do thou anything unto him.

For now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not

withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold behind

him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns.

And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a

burnt offering in the stead of his son.

And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah Jireh, as it

is said to this day. In the mount of the Lord, it

shall be seen. Interesting passage.

We'll look at that this morning. Let's pray.

Father, I thank you for this day that you've given us guy.

Thank you for bringing us again through another week.

And God, not just that we're surviving through it, but that

we're that we're walking with you and and thriving in it.

And God, I just pray that you would help us to keep our

priorities in order as we heard last week.

God, I pray that there wouldn't be anything in our lives that

we're just not willing to give up, not to be, to have a closer

walk with you. God, I pray that every time we

walk through these doors, it will be with the intentions of,

of drawing closer to you and learning what you have for us

and what your law is for us. And God, I pray that you make

this church and the people that are part of it just a, a, a

force for you and not in pride, but got a force that Satan,

Satan trembles at. And, and that I just pray that

you'd help us as we fight and lead our families and raise our

kids now that you would just give us the strength that we

need to do that as fathers, give us the the wisdom and the the

patience as mothers. And God, I just pray that you

would bless each family that's represented here in this church,

that you would help us as we as we strive to live for you in

Jesus name, I pray, Amen. All right, And I already

mentioned this, but Genesis chapter 22 and verse one, I

wanted to point that out. God did tempt Abraham.

It says right there at the end of the verse.

And I, and I think it's important to note, I had a

conversation with a couple guys at work this week and one of

them was saying I just don't believe he's, he claims to be an

atheist. I don't I don't think he is.

He's more agnostic than atheist, but he said, he said, I don't

think that a God could exist and rule and be in charge of the

world that would allow all this bad stuff to happen to people.

And of course, that's the next question.

Why would God allow this to happen to people?

Things, things to happen to people.

And, and it's very clear here. He's tempting, he's testing.

And I do believe God does put things or allow things in the

life of the unsaved to draw them to himself, to point them to

Christ. But in the lives of the saved,

it's absolutely what it's for. It's to strengthen us.

And I wrote this down, God tests us to reveal the good things.

Satan tempts us to bring out the evil.

And that's how you, that's kind of how you know, is it a test or

is it a temptation? If it's tempting you to sin,

that's Satan. If it's testing you to to prove

your faith, that's God. And that's exactly what's

happening here with Abraham. God says in verse 12 of chapter

22 for now I knowest that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast

not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

God was testing him to see I've I've blessed you because you

have followed me, but where, how how strong is this faith that

you've got? He's willing to give his only

son and God stops him and says, OK, now I know that that you

fear me, but I think it's important to know this that in

our in our testing. I think sometimes, myself

included, and maybe maybe I'm the only one, but I think

sometimes we get into a test and we gripe and we complain about

it and we get through it and go, oh man, God got me through that.

But the whole time we, we griped through it.

And I think it's important that in our testing, in our in, in

the test that God gives us that we bring glory to him.

That's what they're for. And so be careful of your of

your attitude and your mindset in those times to bring glory to

God. And that's what Abraham does

here. He doesn't, he doesn't go tell

anybody what he's about to do. You know, I think if it was us

and you wouldn't believe, on Tuesday I got to go take my son

and I got to offer him up for a burnt offer.

Everybody in the church would know about it.

And I'm not making fun of anybody.

That's what I would do. We love to talk about what we're

going through and that's fine. The Bible tells us to bear one

another's burdens and all of that.

But Abraham doesn't tell anybody what's going on.

He's got it all inside. He's bearing it himself because

this is a test that God, God is giving him.

And then he does give glory. He brings glory to God.

He gives glory, but he brings glory to God because God stops

him and says, now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou

hast not withheld thy Son. So be careful in your testing to

bring glory to God. But here's where I have a

question for you. Go to John chapter 8, John

chapter 8 and verse 56. And these are not deep

theological questions, but I hope these are questions that

you have when you read through maybe a passage like this.

Jesus is talking and just a quick background, He's talking

to the leaders and they said, are you greater than our Father

Abraham? I mean who?

Who are you? Are you, are you that great?

Are you greater than Abraham? And you may see that probably in

verse 53, I think. Yeah, verse 53 of John chapter

8. Art thou greater than our father

Abraham, which is dead and the prophets are dead who make us

thou thyself? So who?

Who are you? Jesus answered, If I honor

myself, my honor is nothing. It is my father that honoreth

me, of whom you say that he is your God, yet you have not known

him. But I know him, and if I should

say I know him not, I should be a liar like unto you, but I know

him, and I keep his sayings. Verse 56.

Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it and

was glad. So my question for you is, what

is? What is that talking about?

Did Abraham see Christ? I mean no, he lived thousands of

years before Christ. So what is it saying in verse

56? Abraham rejoiced to see my day

and he saw it and was glad. Any any thoughts for the Todd?

Yeah, well, if you, if you go to Genesis 22, I don't think he saw

an Angel at all. He just heard an Angel.

And I'm not not saying you're wrong.

We're talking here, but in verse.

Let's see verse 11. And the Angel of the Lord called

unto him out of heaven and said Abraham, Abraham.

So he didn't see an Angel, but he did hear one.

Any other thoughts? Messiah.

Yeah. Yeah, OK with Johnny.

OK, good. Anything else?

All right, if you're agreeing with Miss Maxine and brother

Johnny, I believe you're correct.

I think that's exactly what it says in Hebrews Chapter 11.

It says Abraham believed and it was counted unto him for

righteousness. Believed what?

That the in the sacrifices? No, I think that Abraham

realized this was the picture of the Messiah that was coming and

he believed that. And so in John chapter 8, Christ

tells them, Abraham, I already closed my Bible.

Where is it at your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day

and he saw it and was glad is a picture of of the coming

Messiah. So I I believe you are correct

on that. And then it says, well, I'll get

to that in a second. But yes, Abraham rejoiced to see

what will Christ was going to do and he saw it in the type of his

son Isaac. So let's get right into our

lesson. That was all that was all

introduction. So Isaac the son and I and I see

first of all here his character. I'm going to be going back and

forth a little bit between Genesis 22 and Hebrews 11.

So if you can keep a finger in Hebrews 11 or a bookmark or

something, we won't reference it a ton, but we will be there a

you. In Genesis chapter 22, it says

take now thy son, thine only son Isaac was Isaac, Abraham's only

son. So what is he talking about

there? Any thoughts on that?

We'll come back to that in a second.

Think about it. Yes, Sir.

Does that mean he did not know what he was going to do?

No, I think that. So God is God is all knowing,

right? He obviously knew.

But we do have a free will. Abraham at any point could have

stopped and said, and you know what, I can't go through with

this. I, I, I believe you will.

I and I say, I've said this before, our actions betray what

we actually believe. What I'm saying is this is God

says, now I know you're right, but he didn't know before.

I think another one way to say that is now you've proved that

you fear God. God knew it.

But Abraham, like I said, could have stopped at any point and

God, he goes all the way through with it.

And God says, OK, now you've proved that you fear God, don't,

don't kill your son. So, but anyways, all right, So

Hebrews Chapter 11, verse 18, I think, OK, any any thoughts on

Hebrews 11:18

that? I forgot I asked the question

that it says in Genesis 22 that take thy son, thy only son,

Isaac. What we know he had more than

one son. So, Josh?

OK, dot, same. Anything else?

Everybody got the same idea. Yeah.

Yeah. I think he was the A He was the

only legitimate son of Abraham, but he was also the only son

that that really mattered. And I don't mean that in a bad

way. Ishmael never should have been

there. He was.

God didn't kill him, but but Ishmael was a curse to this day

on the children of Israel. But yes, he was the he was the

son of promise, the one that the that the promises were going to

come through. So the one that really, really

mattered. Take that son, Johnny.

Yeah, wouldn't it be nice if Genesis 22 said thine only

begotten Son, But it's not right, right?

That's right. And that's where I was going

next. We were all we were given power

to become the sons of God. So how is he the only begotten

son of God because he is he is the son of promise.

We are we give him power, but he is the son of God, just like

Isaac was the son of Abraham, the one that all the promise

promises were going to come through very good.

All right, so that is the son, Isaac the son.

But here's the calling in Genesis chapter 17.

I got to leave a bookmark or I'm going to be fumbling around here

in a second, but Genesis chapter 17 and I just want to make a

quick point on this and remember Isaac is a type of Christ, not

just this story is a type of Christ.

Isaac himself is a type of Christ.

And so all the way through Isaac's life, then you're going

to see a whole bunch of about similarities.

And we see in Genesis chapter 717 verse 19, when and when,

when Sarah is told that she's going to have a son.

And God said, Sarah, thy wife shall bear a son indeed.

And thou shalt call his name Isaac.

And I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting

covenant and with his seed after him.

But but the point I want to make here is that God told them what

they were going to name their son.

They didn't get to choose it in the same way.

Matthew chapter one, verse 21. She shall bring forth a son and

shalt thou shalt call his name Jesus.

His name was was was given before his actual birth, before

he was even conceived. They God told them what his name

would be and what's the importance of what?

What does the name Isaac mean? I think most of us know that

laughter because Sarah laughed when the Angel told her you're

going to have a son. She laughed.

Yeah, OK, am I being old and and barren anyways?

Am I going to have a son? And but that laughter did turn

to joy. It was a laughter at first of

not a mocking God, but a laughing at this at the whole

scenario. Yeah, OK, but when Isaac was

born, there was there was joy. And and we have the same thing

with Jesus Christ birth in Luke chapter one, verse 47.

My spirit hath rejoiced. Actually, that's not the verse I

wanted to to to give you. Well I will that's Mary talking.

My spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.

And I've got a side note there. Pastor just talked about this I

think on Sunday night and I can't remember the context, but

he said that even Mary called Jesus Christ her savior.

And I think it was in context with the Catholic Church being

being wrong that they deify Mary.

She calls Jesus Christ here in Luke chapter 1 her savior.

But the point I wanted to make here was there was great joy

with Isaac's birth. There was great joy.

In fact, the angels of heaven came down to rejoice with the

birth of Jesus Christ. So many, many similarities.

And we're, and we'll get even even more pointed similarities

here in just a little bit. Not it's not just similar, it's

a picture. It's a type of Christ.

Isaac is. So then we have the coming of

Isaac. And for this I want you to go to

Genesis chapter 18, Genesis chapter 18 in verse 11.

And what I want you to see here is that both the birth of Christ

and the birth of birth of Isaac were supernatural.

They were miracles. Verse 11 of chapter 18.

Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age.

Now you have an early Genesis, 430 years old.

This guy started having kids, right?

So it wasn't abnormal. Now it's abnormal.

This is after the flood. They, they don't live nearly as

long as they did in early in the early parts of Genesis.

There. So now Abraham and Sarah were

old and well stricken at age, and it ceased to be with Sarah.

After the manner of woman, she's not able to bear children

anymore. Therefore Sarah laughed within

herself, saying, After I am waxed old, shall I have

pleasure, my Lord, being old also?

And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh,

saying, Shall I have a surety bear a child which I'm old?

Is anything too hard for the Lord at the time appointed?

I will return unto thee according to the time of life,

and Sarah shall have a son. But this is a miraculous birth

of Isaac. I mean, even Sarah and Abraham

are going. No chance.

It's not happening. But Jesus Christ was born of a

virgin. That's a miraculous birth.

And that's all we'll say about that.

Both of them are supernatural births.

But then we have the purpose of Isaac's birth.

And what was the purpose of Isaac's birth?

We saw that just now in Genesis chapter 18, to fulfill the

Genesis 18 · chapter mention

promise that was given to Abraham, to bring a nation to

Abraham as the sands of the sea and as the stars of the sky.

God told Abraham in that promise.

And so to give life to a nation. And Jesus Christ birth was this

for the same purpose, to give life not just to a nation, but

to the entire world, to us even as Gentiles, that we can have

eternal life through this only begotten Son.

So that was Isaac the Son. And now let's look at Isaac the

sacrifice in Genesis 22 here. Isaac on the altar is, I mean,

you don't even have to look into it to see the type of Christ

here. I mean it is a very, very

obvious type of the sacrifice that was going to happen on

Calvary. And I want to look at something

here, a phrase in verse, verse 8 of chapter 22.

And Abraham said, my son, God will provide himself a lamb for

a burnt offering. And I think you can look at that

in three ways. When I don't know if any of you

men, I know some of you were, but I don't know who all was in

the hermeneutics class that pastor taught for the men how to

how to study and how to preach God's word and, and what are you

looking at? And there are phrases in the

Bible that I think I've preached a message.

Now I can't remember what the phrase was, but there was only

four words and each point was one of those words.

I think this is kind of the same way God will provide himself a

lamb. You can look at this phrase a

few different ways. God will provide it.

It's it's the sources from God, right?

So God will provide it. The second way you can look at

it, and I'm not saying interpret this different ways.

I think this is all in this in this statement that God will

provide himself a lamb is that there was a necessity of the

lamb. It had to be there.

And so he will provide it, but he'll provide for us for the

redemption of mankind, a lamb. But the third way I think that

that we can look at this is because there's no punctuation

here. God will provide himself as the

Lamb, right? And so I think very easy to see

that God, God himself is the lamb that he's going to provide.

And so go to look at look at verse 2 of Genesis chapter 22.

The passion here between father and son is what I want to see.

Abraham loved Isaac very much, unlike Ishmael.

He cared for Ishmael, but he didn't love Ishmael like he

loved Isaac. And we see that that parallel

with the the love of the Father and Jesus Christ.

When Christ is in the garden and he's sweating drops of blood and

he's praying to the Father to let this cup pass from me.

I think there's a few things going on there.

I think more important, I think probably the strongest one there

is not. He wasn't afraid of the

suffering. I think we can say that he

wasn't afraid of, Granted, he was a man, he wasn't happy with

being beaten and his beard ripped out, but that's not what

he was afraid of. Even martyrs have gone through

stuff like that with a smile on their face because of the glory

that's being given to God. So I don't think Jesus was

sweating great drops of blood because of the the suffering

that was coming. I think there's two things.

One, the sin that he was going to have to bear.

He had never known sin and he's asking the Father if you can

please let this not happen. Nevertheless, not my will.

But the second thing is the Father.

He knew the Father was going to turn his back on him, that that

relationship had never from eternity past been broken.

And now it's that's about to happen.

And so I think the parallel here, the type here is the love

that Isaac has for his son and he's going to have to sacrifice

him is the same love that Christ that God had for his son, Jesus

Christ. And he's going to have to

sacrifice him for the sins of mankind.

And we don't really see that, that that bond of love between

father and son really anywhere else in the Bible.

We we have many fathers and sons.

You think of Saul and Jonathan and David and and Absalom when

he cries after Absalom is killed.

Absalom, my son Absalom would to God.

But the love between Isaac and and and Abraham here is a is a

is a type of the love between the father and the son.

And in John chapter 17, don't go there, but John chapter 17 and

verse 24 kind of gives us a picture of the bond of love, the

relationship that was about to be broken when Christ took on

the sins of the world. John chapter 17 and verse 24

says this. For Father I will that they also

whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am, that they may

behold my glory which Thou hast given me.

For Thou lovest me before the foundation of the world.

This is Christ praying. Thou loved me before the

foundation of the world. So for eternity past this

relationship was there and now it's about to be broken and

Isaac and and Abraham are are a perfect picture of that Now

Genesis chapter 22 back in in our our text in verse 6, we have

Genesis 22 · chapter mention

a a partnership here. Not only did they love each

other, they, they spent time together and they and they had a

had a relationship. In verse 6, it says and Abraham

took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it upon Isaac

his son. And he took the fire in his hand

and a knife and they went both of them together.

Now I think sometimes we get the picture.

Isaac didn't know what was going on here.

I'm sure they had sacrificed many times before together just

as just as Adam would have, would have shown Cain and Abel

how how to sacrifice to God. And that's why Cain was was

judged for his his sacrifice. Abraham would have done thing

the same thing for Isaac. So Isaac thinks nothing of it.

And I'm sure, you know, I think in our minds, we see them

walking up this mountain and it's it's somber.

They're both you know, they're going up to their death.

Isaac didn't know that Abraham may have been a little more

serious, but I think that it would have been this a

conversation as any father and son would have had going out,

you know, to maybe to church. You know, you're not somber on

your way to church, man, this is going to be tough, you know,

unless you're about to get church discipline or something.

I'm just kidding. But but they weren't, they were

not somber. They were having a conversation.

They were doing this together in communion.

And that's all the way through the life of Jesus Christ.

You, you see that in the Gospels where Jesus goes out and he

prays and he has communion with the Father.

It was a perfect relationship. And because Abraham and Isaac

are human, I'm sure it wasn't perfect, but it was very, very

good communion. And so they have this

partnership. But then I want to look real

quickly at the purpose. What was the purpose of Genesis

Genesis 22 · chapter mention

chapter 22? When we punish our kids, we

don't punish them to death. But when we punish our kids for

something they've done wrong, it's their fault, right?

They have something that they did wrong.

Or maybe maybe we've had a bad day at work and we come home and

you know, everybody feels the wrath and they didn't even do

anything. But you know, I'm wrong, but

they feel it. We don't have that here.

Isaac did nothing wrong and the father wasn't punishing him.

So, So what is that? It's what we have with Jesus

Christ and God the Father. God wasn't mad at his son and

Jesus did nothing wrong. Perfect type.

And I'm trying to hurry through this so we can get get all the

way through it, but it's a perfect type of what was what

was going to happen. And that's why in Hebrews

Hebrews 11 · chapter mention

Chapter 11, we or John chapter 8, we see Abraham saw what was

coming and he rejoiced in it. And we'll see here in just a

second exactly when, when I think Abraham finally realizes

what exactly is going on here. But I think it's important to

note that in let's see verse 6. And Abraham took the wood of the

burnt offering and laid it upon Isaac his son.

Perfect picture of the cross being laid on Jesus Christ.

And then he took the fire in his hand and a knife and they both,

they went both of them together. And through the Bible, you'll

see this. But the knife points to death

and the fire points to judgment. And Abraham has both of those.

And so the same way that Jesus Christ carried the cross and

the, and the father had the death and judgment in his hand

of what was about to come. And I don't think these are

stretches at all. I think this is very, very

obviously a picture of of Christ and what was coming.

Let's see, let's keep on moving. All right now, I want to look

real quickly and I already mentioned this, but I want to

look real quickly at Isaac. What is Isaac's part here?

Isaac at this point. Now remember Genesis chapter

2021, Isaac is born. We have all that Genesis chapter

22. Now, Isaac is a young man and

remember, Abraham is an old man. He's old and well stricken in

years. And so I think the point here

that's important to note is that do you think Isaac could have

gotten away if he wanted to? Absolutely.

Isaac, when he realizes what's going on, where, where's the

lamb? God will provide himself a lamb.

Here. Come here, let me bind your

hands and feet. I think Isaac said OK, he could

have stopped it and and Jesus Christ being the God of the

universe Incarnate could have stopped this, but we saw that in

the garden nevertheless. Not my will, but thine a very

obvious type of Christ and what was coming.

I think it's also important to note here that Isaac is

completely alone as the sacrifice.

There's no men with them. Remember they left all the men

at the bottom of the mountain. His father is not with him.

His father's about to kill him and Jesus Christ was the same

way. All the disciples have fled.

His own father has turned his back on him.

Christ is burying this sacrifice alone.

And I think Genesis chapter 22, it's purposely this way.

It's not just said this way. It's this was done on purpose as

a pointing, as a type of what Christ was going to do.

Now I got one point left and we got about 5 minutes.

So I want to, I want to make sure we get through this.

So all right, in Genesis chapter 22 in verse verse 11 is where it

starts. Angel, the Lord called him to

him out of heaven, said Abraham. Abraham said, here am I lay not

thine hand upon the land. This is where the picture sort

of breaks down. Jesus was not spared.

Isaac is spared. So So what do we have going on

here? And I want to look at that just

for a second. I think that OK and I have one

more question for you. It is in is in Hebrews Chapter

11. So if you're still if you still

got that, go to Hebrews Chapter 11 and verse 19.

Yeah. So verse 17 by faith Abraham

when he was tried offered up Isaac, he did offer him.

He didn't kill him, but he definitely offered him.

He's on the altar bound and ready to to slay him when the

Angel stops him. So he did offer him up and that

he had received the promises offered up.

OK, sorry, offered up Isaac. And he that had received the

promises that Isaac would become a great nation offered up his

only begotten Son, of whom it was said that in Isaac shall thy

seed be called. And here's where in verse 19

accounting or assuming that God was able to raise him up even

from the dead from whence also he received him in a figure.

So my question here is what does that mean?

He received him in a figure he didn't receive him figuratively.

So what is what is that saying? What do what do you think that

is saying Hebrews Chapter 11, verse 19.

What is that figure that it's talking about?

Anybody. All right, I'm going to tell

you. So in Genesis chapter 2, the

type seems to break down. Isaac is spared.

But what I think we actually have going on here is a figure

of the resurrection of what? Christ what?

What was going to happen when Christ is resurrected and then

he ascends? Where does he go?

To the Father. And we have the same thing here

with Isaac. He is not literally resurrected,

but figuratively He was. He was dead.

He he was done and figuratively he is resurrected and and

brought back in perfect fellowship with the father.

And I think not just that. I think, I think it's very clear

that the Bible is, is saying that without actually killing

Isaac. Why did God not let Abraham kill

Isaac and raise him from the dead?

I don't know, but he didn't he stopped him.

And then it says in Hebrews 11 as a figure, he resurrected him

figuratively. And I think that's important to

know that the type breaks down there.

But I but I don't think it's, it's not an accident.

It's on purpose to to point out the resurrection.

This is this is also very interesting and I think we'll

finish with this point. Genesis chapter 22 and verse 4.

When does all this happen? The third day.

That's not an accident. This is a type of what Christ

was going to do. Then on the third day, Abraham

lifted up his eyes and saw that place afar off.

And all this happens on the third day, the resurrection of

figuratively of Isaac and, and all of that.

So we'll close with this very, very strong type of Christ.

I don't think there's any argument that, that, that, that

this is not a type of Christ. We're going to look at look at

a, a different 1 next week. And if you want to study up on

it a little bit, right this passage down, it's Leviticus

Leviticus 14 · chapter mention

chapter 14 verses one through 7. But the two birds being

sacrificed are a type of Christ. We're going to look at that next

week. But I want to close with this.

In Genesis 22, verse 7, Isaac spake unto Abraham his father,

Genesis 22:7

and said, my father. He said, here am I my son.

And he said, behold the fire in the wood.

But where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

And in direct contrast to that today we don't ask where is the

lamb? John said, behold the lamb which

taketh away the sin of the world.

In this type, we had them looking for the lamb and, and,

and Abraham having faith that God would provide himself a

lamb. He will do it.

And then he did provide himself a lamb.

And that's the one that we worship even now, the one that

was sacrificed for us and sits on the right hand of the father,

the Lamb and he's coming back as the conquering king.

But he he went out as as the lamb, the sacrificed lamb.

And I have a whole lot more that I want to say, but I think we

get the point here. Isaac is a type of Christ.

And so very good Genesis chapter 22.

The end of that chapter is all about Isaac and and Abraham or

the middle of the chapter there. So you can go back and look at

that this week in your devotions and spend a little more time

studying that. But Isaac as a type of Christ.

Let's pray and then we'll be finished.

Father, I thank you for this day you've given us got to thank you

that the Old Testament is just full of of the proof that from

the foundation of the world. This was this was the plan.

This was not a man sinned and then a redemption plan had to be

coming up come up with from the foundation of the world.

Your son was planned to be sacrificed for mankind and I

thank you for that God, I thank you for where we see in in as

we've talked about before in Genesis 5.

The plan was there, all the genealogies pointing to the

Messiah that would come now here in Genesis 22, Isaac pointing to

the Messiah that would come and even back in the Old Testament,

it being counted to the to the to the those that were saved

then that they believed in the coming Messiah and God.

I just pray that you'd help us now that we are looking back.

I think in some ways it's easier for us.

We've seen the Messiah come. We've seen him be sacrificed and

resurrected and now we just have to believe.

And God, I just pray that you would help us as we study your

word on our own and in church and and wherever we get a chance

that we would see you pointing the see the word of God pointing

to you and it would draw us closer to you.

God, I pray that we'd have just a great fellowship and a great

relationship with you. Pray that you be with the next

hour that you be with our pastor as he preaches that you'd fill

them with your power. But God, I pray that you would

feed us from your word. In Jesus name I pray.
