  1. Well, while you're standing, please take your Bible.

  2. We'll read the Word of God standing up here together,

  3. and you can turn to the Gospel of John.

  4. We're in John chapter 12 this week.

    John 12 chapter mention

  5. While you're turning there, let me kind of give you an overview

  6. of the structure of the book of John,

  7. because in this chapter we have a shift.

  8. So John chapter 1 is the prologue,

    John 1 chapter mention

  9. and then the conclusion of the whole Gospel according to John

  10. is John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  11. So you've got a prologue at the beginning, a conclusion at the end.

  12. And in the middle, there are two books, you know, we could say.

  13. So the first one is the book of the signs,

  14. the book of the seven signs that are pointing to the final work of Christ,

  15. and then the second book is called the book of His hour,

  16. and it's the passion of Christ.

  17. So you're going to see some language as we read this,

  18. John chapter 12, that's indicating a shift into the second half of the book.

    John 12 chapter mention

  19. And just so you know too, just mapping it out,

  20. my plan is that at least this summer,

  21. in my mind we could do this for 30 years,

  22. every summer at least,

  23. but at least this summer we're going to be going through one psalm,

  24. you know, the great book of psalms.

  25. These were the songbook of Jesus, it was His hymnal.

  26. We're going to go through one psalm every Lord's Day.

  27. So my plan is to get up until somewhere around John 13,

  28. somewhere in there,

  29. and then we'll pause and we'll go through psalms for about eight weeks or so,

  30. and then we'll pick up in the Gospel of John in the fall,

  31. and we'll probably finish the book of John around December.

  32. So just so you know, that's where we're headed.

  33. All right.

  34. And while you've got it there now,

  35. so John chapter 12,

    John 12 chapter mention

  36. go ahead and look at verse 23.

  37. So John chapter 12, verse 23,

    John 12:23

  38. see what Jesus says?

  39. He says,

  40. The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  41. So our Lord Jesus Himself is indicating a shift,

  42. because up until this point He said,

  43. it's not my time, it's not my hour.

  44. Now in John 12, the hour is here.

  45. One of our older kids asked me earlier this week,

  46. where are we at?

  47. What's the sermon about?

  48. Like, what's the story?

  49. And I said, well, you remember last week it was the raising of Lazarus.

  50. This week is the effect that that had.

  51. Like, how did that change everything?

  52. And that's what we're going to see today.

  53. It's the effect of Lazarus coming back to life.

  54. And what I want you to listen to in these first 26 verses,

  55. Lazarus' name still comes up four different times here.

  56. All right.

  57. So John chapter 12,

    John 12 chapter mention

  58. beginning of verse 1 through verse 26.

  59. And as you hear this, remember,

  60. this is the inspired, inerrant, infallible,

  61. clear and sufficient Word of God.

  62. Six days before the Passover,

  63. Jesus therefore came to Bethany,

  64. where Lazarus was,

  65. whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

  66. So they gave a dinner for Him there.

  67. Martha served,

  68. and Lazarus was one of those reclining with Him at table.

  69. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment,

  70. made from pure nard,

  71. and anointed the feet of Jesus,

  72. and wiped His feet with her hair.

  73. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

  74. Verse 4,

  75. But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples,

  76. he who was about to betray Him, said,

  77. Why was this ointment not sold for 300 denarii

  78. and given to the poor?

  79. He said this not because He cared about the poor,

  80. but because He was a thief.

  81. And having charge of the money bag,

  82. He used to help Himself to what was put into it.

  83. Jesus said,

  84. Leave her alone,

  85. so that she may keep it for the day of my burial.

  86. For the poor you always have with you,

  87. but you do not always have me.

  88. When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there,

  89. they came, not only on account of Him,

  90. but also to see Lazarus,

  91. whom He had raised from the dead.

  92. So the chief priests made plans

  93. to put Lazarus to death as well,

  94. because on account of Him,

  95. many of the Jews were going away

  96. and believing in Jesus.

  97. Verse 12,

  98. The next day,

  99. the large crowd that had come to the feast

  100. heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

  101. So they took branches of palm trees

  102. and went out to meet Him,

  103. crying out,

  104. Hosanna!

  105. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord,

  106. even the King of Israel!

  107. And Jesus found a young donkey

  108. and sat on it,

  109. just as it is written,

  110. Fear not, daughter of Zion,

  111. behold, your King is coming,

  112. sitting on a donkey's colt.

  113. His disciples did not understand these things at first,

  114. but when Jesus was glorified,

  115. then they remembered

  116. that these things had been written about Him

  117. and had been done to Him.

  118. The crowd that had been with Him

  119. when He called Lazarus out of the tomb

  120. and raised Him from the dead

  121. continued to bear witness.

  122. The reason why the crowd went to meet Him

  123. was that they had heard He had done this sign.

  124. So the Pharisees said to one another,

  125. You see that you are gaining nothing.

  126. Look, the world has gone after Him.

  127. Verse 20,

  128. Now some,

  129. now those,

  130. I'm sorry, excuse me,

  131. now among those who went up

  132. to worship at the feast

  133. were some Greeks.

  134. So these came to Philip,

  135. who was from Bethsaida in Galilee,

  136. and asked Him,

  137. Sir, we wish to see Jesus.

  138. Philip went and told Andrew,

  139. Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus,

  140. and Jesus answered them,

  141. The hour has come

  142. for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  143. Truly, truly,

  144. I say to you,

  145. unless a grain of wheat

  146. falls into the earth

  147. and dies,

  148. it remains alone.

  149. But if it dies,

  150. it bears much fruit.

  151. Whoever loves his life

  152. loses it,

  153. and whoever hates his life

  154. in this world

  155. will keep it

  156. for eternal life.

  157. If anyone serves me,

  158. he must follow me,

  159. and where I am,

  160. there will my servant be also.

  161. If anyone serves me,

  162. the Father will honor him.

  163. This is the word of the Lord.

  164. Thanks be to God.

  165. You may be seated.

  166. Would you pray with me?

  167. Father, I ask that

  168. by the power of your Holy Spirit,

  169. you will cause us

  170. in our minds

  171. and in our hearts

  172. to see Jesus,

  173. to behold you,

  174. Lord God,

  175. in the flesh,

  176. as the hour

  177. of your great work

  178. to be glorified

  179. has arrived.

  180. Please speak to us,

  181. Lord.

  182. Help us to not only understand,

  183. but to receive your word.

  184. And I pray, Lord,

  185. that by the power of your Spirit,

  186. you will change us.

  187. You will make us

  188. prepared for the gospel.

  189. And that when you work

  190. in our hearts,

  191. the gospel,

  192. it will change everything

  193. in our lives.

  194. For your glory we pray.

  195. Amen.

  196. Amen.

  197. Well, beloved congregation

  198. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  199. the question I invite you

  200. to ponder today is this.

  201. Which life

  202. do you love most?

  203. Which life do you love most?

  204. See, at the end of our text,

  205. we just read this.

  206. Jesus says,

  207. if you love your life

  208. in this world,

  209. it will perish.

  210. But if you lay down

  211. your life in this world

  212. through union with Christ,

  213. He will preserve your soul

  214. for eternity.

  215. There is this life

  216. and there is the life

  217. to come.

  218. I think Lazarus

  219. is one man,

  220. one illustration

  221. of this great truth.

  222. There is a spiritual kingdom

  223. to come.

  224. And the soul of Lazarus,

  225. he had died.

  226. His soul had left his body.

  227. The soul of Lazarus

  228. was put back into his body.

  229. He got new life

  230. in this world.

  231. If we ask Lazarus

  232. that question,

  233. I think his answer

  234. would be pretty easy.

  235. Do you prefer this life

  236. in this fallen sinful world?

  237. Or do you prefer

  238. the life that your soul

  239. will enjoy for eternity

  240. in Christ,

  241. the kingdom of heaven?

  242. Now, we're going to walk

  243. through verse by verse,

  244. but I was even thinking

  245. about this, you know,

  246. for myself.

  247. Think of all that we have

  248. to do to take care

  249. of our body.

  250. And we should take care

  251. of our body.

  252. We brush our teeth,

  253. we get our hair cut,

  254. we trim our nails.

  255. We do a lot.

  256. We feed, we exercise,

  257. you know.

  258. But think about your soul.

  259. And when you think

  260. of who you are,

  261. do you think first

  262. of your body

  263. when you stand in the mirror,

  264. that's who I am?

  265. Or do you think first

  266. of your soul?

  267. We have a body,

  268. we have a soul.

  269. That picture that we got

  270. with Lazarus

  271. getting a new life,

  272. it's really to teach us

  273. you have a new life.

  274. When God breathes life

  275. and gives,

  276. regenerates your heart,

  277. He breathes a new soul

  278. into you.

  279. That's how Paul explains it

  280. in 2 Corinthians 5, 17.

  281. If anyone is in Christ,

  282. he is a new creation.

  283. The old has passed away.

  284. Behold, the new has come.

  285. So if your soul

  286. is united to Christ,

  287. the new creation

  288. has already begun

  289. in you,

  290. in your soul.

  291. So chapter 11,

  292. we saw how Lazarus

  293. was raised from the dead.

  294. Life conquered death.

  295. Light conquered darkness.

  296. The kingdom of heaven

  297. is conquering

  298. the domain

  299. of the kingdom

  300. of the earth.

  301. It was the free gift

  302. of God's grace,

  303. life in Christ

  304. that conquered

  305. the wages

  306. of Adam's sin,

  307. which is death.

  308. Well, in chapter 11,

  309. it was about God

  310. giving one man

  311. new life.

  312. And here in chapter 12,

  313. I believe it's like

  314. the ripple effects

  315. of a new life.

  316. So picture yourself

  317. in one of those

  318. beautiful lakes

  319. here in Colorado

  320. and you're down

  321. almost on the level

  322. of the water

  323. and it's perfectly still,

  324. no wind.

  325. You could take

  326. the tiniest little pebble

  327. and drop it

  328. and you'll see

  329. a ripple effect,

  330. won't you?

  331. And that's how it is.

  332. When God breathes life

  333. into one soul,

  334. just one person

  335. who will believe in him,

  336. it causes a ripple effect.

  337. I believe that's what

  338. we will see

  339. in this chapter.

  340. Jesus said,

  341. whoever loves

  342. his life

  343. loses it.

  344. Whoever hates

  345. his life in this world

  346. will keep it

  347. for eternal life.

  348. So the Bible teaches,

  349. our Lord Jesus Christ

  350. teaches that there

  351. are two lives.

  352. There's the life

  353. of the flesh

  354. and there's the life

  355. of the spirit.

  356. There's a life

  357. that's enslaved

  358. in darkness

  359. and there's a life

  360. that's received

  361. the light

  362. of the kingdom

  363. of heaven.

  364. There is a life

  365. that's perishing

  366. but there is a life

  367. for your soul

  368. that is imperishable.

  369. There is the earthly life

  370. and there is the heavenly life.

  371. Which life

  372. do you love most?

  373. Now look at verse 1.

  374. We read that

  375. Jesus

  376. six days

  377. before the Passover.

  378. Now this is the first time

  379. that the Apostle John

  380. in this gospel

  381. does not call this

  382. the feast of the Jews.

  383. So he's already

  384. indicating a shift.

  385. He's anticipating.

  386. This is about,

  387. this feast of the Passover

  388. is about to be transformed.

  389. He came to Bethany

  390. where Lazarus was

  391. which had been raised

  392. from the dead

  393. whom he raised

  394. from the dead.

  395. Now

  396. Lazarus got a new life

  397. and it changed everything.

  398. There was a Puritan pastor

  399. named Richard Sibbes

  400. and it was said of him

  401. that he was a wicked man.

  402. He was a sinner.

  403. But when they looked

  404. at his life

  405. as an old man,

  406. as a man who had been

  407. just loving the Lord,

  408. serving him within the church

  409. for many, many years,

  410. they looked at Richard Sibbes,

  411. this old pastor,

  412. and they said,

  413. heaven was in him

  414. before he was in heaven.

  415. That's probably a great way

  416. to describe Lazarus.

  417. The new life he got

  418. four times mentioned

  419. in this passage.

  420. You could say

  421. heaven was in Christ

  422. before Christ's bodily,

  423. glorified body

  424. was back in heaven.

  425. And the same might have been

  426. true of Lazarus.

  427. We don't get much focus

  428. on Lazarus.

  429. The focus is on Christ.

  430. Brian Voss helped me

  431. to see next

  432. in verses two and three

  433. a great contrast here.

  434. We're going to see

  435. a contrast between

  436. Lazarus and his two sisters

  437. versus Judas.

  438. And that's the focus

  439. of John,

  440. how he tells this story.

  441. So what I want you

  442. to observe is this,

  443. that we're told

  444. that Martha

  445. and Lazarus

  446. and Mary,

  447. they're each

  448. are doing something

  449. but they don't say anything.

  450. Their actions

  451. say it all.

  452. There's no dialogue

  453. with them.

  454. But the life of heaven

  455. abounds in grateful service

  456. in communion with Christ.

  457. See, they see this new life

  458. in their brother

  459. and look at the result.

  460. In verse two,

  461. they made a dinner for him.

  462. Now, in one week from now,

  463. Jesus would be the one

  464. preparing a dinner

  465. for his disciples.

  466. Bethany had been a place

  467. of escape for him

  468. in the past.

  469. Now, the hour has arrived.

  470. It's like the king

  471. mounting for war,

  472. for coming in for battle,

  473. the last victory.

  474. In chapter two,

  475. Martha served

  476. and Lazarus was one of them

  477. who sat and reclined

  478. at the table.

  479. So with Martha and Lazarus,

  480. we have a picture

  481. of serving the Lord

  482. out of gratitude

  483. and relaxing

  484. and reclining

  485. and enjoying communion

  486. with the Lord.

  487. And then with the other sister,

  488. we get one more

  489. response of gratitude.

  490. Look at verse three.

  491. Then Mary took

  492. a pound of ointment.

  493. This is nard,

  494. or some translations

  495. render it spike nard.

  496. And we're told

  497. it was very costly.

  498. What Judas says

  499. gives us a price tag

  500. to put on it.

  501. And it was equivalent

  502. to one year's wages.

  503. So before bank accounts

  504. and stuff like that,

  505. you had to store up

  506. all your reserves,

  507. all your money

  508. in something physical.

  509. This was her one year's wages

  510. set aside as a savings.

  511. Most likely this nard

  512. was imported from India.

  513. Remember Jerusalem?

  514. It's a crisscross

  515. for all these major highways

  516. connecting all the continents.

  517. It was a place of trade

  518. and it would be a way

  519. to acquire this rare

  520. and expensive ointment.

  521. We're told that she anointed

  522. the feet of Jesus

  523. and wiped his feet

  524. with her hair.

  525. Paul explains to the Corinthians

  526. how a woman's hair

  527. and their culture

  528. was a sign of her honor.

  529. So here she is

  530. at the feet

  531. of this man,

  532. Jesus Christ.

  533. He is everything to her.

  534. Her sister is serving,

  535. her brother is reclining

  536. and eating

  537. and enjoying communion

  538. with him.

  539. And her way of expressing

  540. her gratitude

  541. is to lavish

  542. everything she has

  543. as a way of saying

  544. he is all to me.

  545. I laid down

  546. my life savings.

  547. I laid down

  548. my honor.

  549. Father,

  550. Jesus Christ,

  551. God,

  552. Lord of all,

  553. he is everything

  554. to me.

  555. You see the ripple effect

  556. of a new life?

  557. It results in

  558. grateful service

  559. and communion.

  560. Mary

  561. worshiped him,

  562. the creator,

  563. in humbleness.

  564. We sing,

  565. let all things

  566. their creator bless

  567. and do just that.

  568. Worship him

  569. in humbleness.

  570. If all the creation

  571. saw the Lord

  572. for who he was,

  573. this would be

  574. the only natural

  575. response.

  576. In verse 3,

  577. we're told that

  578. the whole house

  579. was filled

  580. with the fragrance

  581. of this ointment.

  582. When was the last time

  583. in this story

  584. that we were reminded

  585. of a smell?

  586. It was the stench

  587. of death,

  588. wasn't it?

  589. You see how now

  590. a new life

  591. has replaced

  592. the stench of death

  593. with a fragrance

  594. that fills

  595. the whole house.

  596. Christ's own death

  597. does the exact

  598. same thing.

  599. The stench

  600. of the curse

  601. of sin

  602. of death

  603. is replaced

  604. with the wonderful

  605. aroma

  606. of new life.

  607. So the life

  608. of heaven,

  609. it abounds

  610. in grateful service

  611. and communion

  612. to Christ.

  613. That's one of the

  614. effects

  615. of a new life.

  616. Which life

  617. do you love

  618. most?

  619. Christ.

  620. Are you like

  621. these siblings

  622. here?

  623. Mary, Martha

  624. and Lazarus?

  625. They loved

  626. this life

  627. of the spirit

  628. that they got

  629. to enjoy

  630. being with Christ,

  631. serving him,

  632. lavishing

  633. everything they

  634. have at his feet.

  635. They loved

  636. the light

  637. that he brought

  638. to their darkest

  639. point of their lives

  640. in their world.

  641. They loved

  642. the newness

  643. that they were

  644. enjoying.

  645. They didn't want

  646. anything to do

  647. with the old.

  648. They loved

  649. the imperishable,

  650. the value

  651. of their souls

  652. being united

  653. to the king

  654. of kings

  655. rather than

  656. holding on

  657. to that which

  658. is perishable

  659. like this nard.

  660. Jesus calls us

  661. to bury

  662. our earthly life

  663. with Christ.

  664. Keep

  665. him

  666. as your all.

  667. See,

  668. what Mary

  669. was also doing

  670. is that she

  671. was anointing

  672. Jesus.

  673. She was anointing

  674. him as king

  675. for his triumphal

  676. entry as he's

  677. going to go

  678. into Jerusalem

  679. as the king.

  680. But she was also

  681. preparing his body

  682. for burial.

  683. And our response

  684. is that by laying

  685. it all down

  686. and saying,

  687. Christ,

  688. you are the

  689. anointed one

  690. of heaven.

  691. I trust my soul

  692. to you alone.

  693. You will keep

  694. my soul.

  695. You will guard it.

  696. You will protect it.

  697. You're the one

  698. who will sanctify

  699. and prepare

  700. my soul

  701. for heaven

  702. with you.

  703. There's no better

  704. place for your

  705. soul to be.

  706. Well,

  707. a second

  708. contrast here

  709. though is that

  710. new life,

  711. it doesn't change

  712. everyone.

  713. For those who

  714. see the new life,

  715. who enjoy and

  716. experience new life

  717. in Christ,

  718. it changes everything.

  719. But Christ's new

  720. life does not

  721. change everyone.

  722. And the contrast

  723. between these

  724. siblings is with

  725. Judas.

  726. He's their foil.

  727. See,

  728. they said

  729. nothing,

  730. but their

  731. actions spoke

  732. volumes.

  733. Now,

  734. Judas,

  735. he doesn't do

  736. anything to show

  737. his value of

  738. Christ,

  739. but he does

  740. talk.

  741. His words say

  742. it all.

  743. Look at verse

  744. four.

  745. Then Judas Iscariot,

  746. we're told in

  747. others,

  748. text that

  749. it was Simon's

  750. son.

  751. He was one of

  752. the disciples.

  753. So being really

  754. precise,

  755. this is who I'm

  756. talking about.

  757. And this is the

  758. one who would

  759. betray Jesus.

  760. So he's letting

  761. us know right

  762. away.

  763. This was a

  764. wolf in

  765. sheep's

  766. clothing.

  767. He said in

  768. verse five,

  769. why was this

  770. ointment not

  771. sold for 300

  772. denarii or

  773. 300 pence in

  774. the money given

  775. to the poor?

  776. Now,

  777. we're not

  778. absolutely certain,

  779. but it's possible

  780. when we read,

  781. you know,

  782. one piece of

  783. silver that

  784. equals one

  785. denarii.

  786. It was a

  787. common,

  788. you know,

  789. currency.

  790. So however

  791. much money an

  792. average person

  793. would make in

  794. one day would

  795. be one denarii

  796. or one piece

  797. of silver.

  798. And we

  799. know that

  800. Judas in

  801. Matthew 26

  802. is going to

  803. leave from

  804. here and go

  805. sell the

  806. Lord Jesus

  807. to those who

  808. want to kill

  809. him for 30

  810. pieces of

  811. silver.

  812. We know from

  813. the Old

  814. Testament that

  815. that price,

  816. you know,

  817. 30 days wages,

  818. that's the

  819. price that you

  820. would buy a

  821. slave.

  822. Or if your

  823. ox killed

  824. another man's

  825. slave, you

  826. would pay

  827. him that

  828. price, 30

  829. pieces of

  830. silver.

  831. to Mary,

  832. Jesus was

  833. worth all.

  834. To Judas,

  835. Jesus was a

  836. common servant

  837. or slave.

  838. Jesus was

  839. anointed by

  840. Mary.

  841. One week

  842. later, Jesus

  843. would be the

  844. one taking the

  845. posture of a

  846. servant and

  847. washing the

  848. feet of his

  849. disciples,

  850. including

  851. Judas.

  852. In verse

  853. 6, Judas

  854. said this not

  855. because he

  856. cared about the

  857. poor.

  858. Remember what

  859. Jesus said in

  860. John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  861. the hirelings,

  862. they don't really

  863. care, but

  864. because he was

  865. a thief.

  866. Well, that's

  867. exactly how the

  868. wolves are

  869. described.

  870. They are thieves.

  871. They came to

  872. destroy him.

  873. Because Judas

  874. was the keeper of

  875. the money bag and

  876. he would carry

  877. away what was

  878. put into it.

  879. Now, Jesus, he

  880. knew all of this,

  881. didn't he?

  882. So the shepherd,

  883. he delays his

  884. judgment, he

  885. delays his

  886. judgment.

  887. He knew all of

  888. this with Judas

  889. right there.

  890. But the shepherd

  891. king also defends

  892. his lambs.

  893. So what Judas is

  894. doing to Christ,

  895. he allows.

  896. But when he went

  897. as a wolf and his

  898. fangs come out

  899. against Mary, look

  900. at what Jesus says

  901. in verse 7,

  902. leave her alone.

  903. She has kept

  904. this for the day

  905. of my burial.

  906. So Jesus knows

  907. where this is all

  908. heading.

  909. It's foreshadowing

  910. that his body

  911. before it's put

  912. into the grave

  913. will be anointed

  914. and perfumed.

  915. In verse 8,

  916. Jesus says,

  917. the poor,

  918. this is important,

  919. the poor you

  920. always have

  921. with you.

  922. When he's giving

  923. them a picture

  924. of the church,

  925. it's a church

  926. with poor in it.

  927. The poor,

  928. yes, you are

  929. to care for them

  930. and you will do

  931. that as my church.

  932. They are with you.

  933. That's my vision

  934. for my church.

  935. But you do not

  936. always have me.

  937. This is so important

  938. because our Lord Jesus,

  939. he wants to clarify

  940. that if you are

  941. showing care

  942. for the poor,

  943. it needs to come out

  944. of the overflow

  945. of worship to him.

  946. You worship the Lord

  947. Jesus like Mary

  948. and Martha

  949. and Lazarus

  950. and out of that overflow,

  951. that love for Christ,

  952. the poor are with you.

  953. You're bringing them

  954. along into it.

  955. You're not rejecting them.

  956. But,

  957. care for the poor

  958. must never

  959. replace worship.

  960. Have you ever seen

  961. that happen

  962. in a church?

  963. So this is so important.

  964. The poor must be

  965. with the church.

  966. You must draw them in

  967. and serve them

  968. by serving me.

  969. Take care of the

  970. weakest members.

  971. But this is never

  972. replacement for

  973. worshiping Christ.

  974. We're doing this together.

  975. They are with the church.

  976. But it is never

  977. becoming a social gospel.

  978. Where that's

  979. our ultimate purpose.

  980. Now,

  981. I don't want you

  982. to just think

  983. this is a story

  984. that happened

  985. a long ago.

  986. It has nothing

  987. to do with you

  988. as you sit here.

  989. Judas

  990. had to decide,

  991. is it this life?

  992. This life right now

  993. with this money?

  994. One year's wages?

  995. And I can dip

  996. into some of it?

  997. Or,

  998. is there a life

  999. for the soul?

1000. A life in the age

  1001. to come?

  1002. And you and I

  1003. are like Judas.

  1004. We were born

  1005. enslaved

  1006. to this world.

1007. And on top of that,

  1008. we added on

  1009. our own sins.

  1010. We are bound

  1011. under the chains

  1012. of sin

  1013. when we are born

  1014. into this world.

  1015. And our soul,

  1016. it's being hunted down.

  1017. Martin Luther

  1018. felt this

  1019. so intensely.

  1020. Martin Luther said

  1021. to one person

  1022. who was trying

  1023. to make an argument

  1024. that by your own

  1025. free will,

  1026. you can save yourself.

  1027. Martin Luther's point

  1028. is no,

  1029. your will

  1030. is bound

  1031. under the curse

  1032. of sin and death.

  1033. That's what your will

  1034. is biblically.

  1035. And Martin Luther

  1036. simply said to him,

  1037. your thoughts

  1038. concerning God

  1039. are too human.

  1040. We could say

1041. the same to Judas here.

  1042. Judas,

  1043. you don't value Christ.

  1044. Your thoughts

  1045. concerning Jesus Christ,

  1046. the God-man,

  1047. your thoughts

  1048. about Christ

  1049. are too human.

  1050. And that's the temptation

1051. we all can fall into.

  1052. Our thoughts about God

  1053. are too human.

  1054. Our will is bound.

  1055. Our spirit is dead.

1056. Our hearts are of stone,

  1057. the Bible says,

  1058. until the Holy Spirit

  1059. by His power

  1060. regenerates you.

  1061. That's when you believe.

  1062. And when you believe

  1063. you behold Christ

  1064. for who He is,

  1065. you worship Him.

  1066. You're at His feet.

  1067. Maybe,

  1068. maybe you've been deceived

1069. and maybe you're sitting here

  1070. without having given

  1071. much thought

  1072. to the life

1073. of the age to come.

  1074. And you're enslaved

  1075. to that old life,

1076. the life of the flesh,

  1077. of darkness,

  1078. that's perishing,

  1079. that's bound up

  1080. in this earth.

1081. Is that really the life

  1082. that you love

  1083. like Judas?

  1084. Jesus calls you

  1085. to bury your life

  1086. with Christ

  1087. and He promises

  1088. that He will keep,

  1089. guard, protect,

  1090. and sanctify your soul

  1091. for eternal life

  1092. with Him.

  1093. New life changes everything.

  1094. The third thing

  1095. I want to draw

  1096. your attention to

  1097. is how one person's

  1098. new life

  1099. leads others

  1100. to worship Christ

  1101. as King.

  1102. So, let's focus next

  1103. on the crowd,

  1104. this crowd.

  1105. Look at verse 9.

  1106. When a large crowd

  1107. of the Jews learned

  1108. that Jesus was there,

  1109. they came not for

  1110. Jesus' sake only,

  1111. but that they also

  1112. might see Lazarus,

  1113. also whom He had

  1114. raised from the dead.

1115. Now, look at verse 17.

  1116. Those people

1117. that had been with Him

  1118. when He called Lazarus

  1119. out of the tomb

  1120. and raised Him

  1121. from the dead,

  1122. they gave witness.

  1123. Verse 8 said,

  1124. Therefore the crowd

  1125. also met Him

  1126. because they had heard

  1127. of the sign

  1128. that He had done.

  1129. So, let's remember,

  1130. okay?

  1131. Lazarus died.

  1132. These people from Jerusalem

  1133. came to mourn

  1134. with this family

  1135. seven days

  1136. of mourning,

1137. and on the fourth day,

  1138. right in the middle

1139. of this week of mourning,

  1140. the Lord Jesus

  1141. raised Lazarus

  1142. from the dead.

  1143. And all those

  1144. who were barefoot

  1145. and sackcloth

1146. with ashes on their head,

  1147. they had been fasting,

  1148. singing these really sad

  1149. Hebrew dirges,

  1150. they're now

  1151. bearing witness.

  1152. This really happened.

  1153. And they're spreading

  1154. the word.

  1155. They're telling everyone,

1156. Jesus Christ gave new life

  1157. to a dead man.

  1158. They're bearing witness.

  1159. And a crowd

1160. that had come to Jerusalem

  1161. for the Passover,

  1162. they are now hearing

  1163. about this.

  1164. Whoa, hold on.

  1165. What is going on?

  1166. One person's new life

  1167. leads others

  1168. to worship Jesus

  1169. as king.

  1170. Now, picture this crowd.

1171. What was on their mind?

  1172. They had come

  1173. to Jerusalem

  1174. for the Passover.

1175. You know what the Passover

  1176. was for the Jews?

  1177. It was Independence Day.

  1178. They're remembering

  1179. how the Lord

1180. brought them out of Egypt.

  1181. They're remembering

1182. how they had been enslaved

  1183. to another nation,

  1184. and now they got

  1185. their freedom.

  1186. And I mean,

  1187. you picture Americans

  1188. on Independence Day,

  1189. you got,

  1190. I just picture

  1191. large pickup trucks,

  1192. fireworks,

  1193. flags, you know.

  1194. And this is

  1195. a patriotic moment.

1196. This crowd is now here.

  1197. We've got someone

1198. in the village next door

  1199. who brought new life

  1200. to a man.

  1201. And it's Independence time.

  1202. Let's go gather around.

  1203. So here comes

  1204. this big crowd.

1205. And what were they singing

  1206. as they were traveling

  1207. to Jerusalem

  1208. for Independence Day,

  1209. for Passover?

  1210. They were singing

  1211. from their songbook,

  1212. the Psalms.

  1213. They were singing

  1214. the Psalms of Ascent.

1215. And these Psalms of Ascent

  1216. are putting their minds

  1217. on a great day

  1218. when the priestly office

  1219. and the kingly office

1220. will be joined in Jerusalem,

1221. and He will reign over

  1222. all the earth.

  1223. Like Psalm 118,

  1224. these travelers come weary

  1225. singing these songs,

  1226. and they sing,

  1227. Out of my distress,

1228. I called on the Lord,

1229. and the Lord answered me

  1230. and set me free.

  1231. It's Independence Day.

1232. So that's how the crowd was.

1233. But we're told that Jesus,

  1234. in Matthew 23,

  1235. Jesus,

1236. as He was looking out

  1237. over Jerusalem

  1238. about to enter,

  1239. knowing what the crowd

  1240. was thinking,

  1241. how they're cheering,

  1242. how it's a patriotic moment,

  1243. Jesus weeps.

  1244. He weeps over Jerusalem.

  1245. And He says,

  1246. How I have longed

  1247. to gather you

  1248. under my wings.

  1249. It's the same language

  1250. that Boaz

  1251. sang over Ruth.

  1252. You could say that

  1253. of Boaz,

  1254. couldn't you?

  1255. Heaven was in Boaz

  1256. before Boaz

  1257. was in heaven.

  1258. Well, now look back

  1259. at verse 13.

  1260. This crowd took

  1261. branches of palms.

  1262. They took branches

  1263. of palms,

  1264. and I don't think

  1265. it's wrong

1266. if churches want to do that,

  1267. but listen to what

  1268. this would actually mean.

  1269. The palm branches

  1270. were never ordained

  1271. by Scripture

1272. as part of the ceremonial law,

  1273. so we shouldn't read

  1274. symbolism into that.

  1275. It became a tradition

  1276. of the patriots,

  1277. the national Jews,

  1278. during the Maccabean revolt

  1279. that we mentioned

  1280. a little bit ago

1281. with the Feast of Dedication.

  1282. So then,

  1283. when they took back

  1284. the power,

  1285. they started

  1286. printing coins,

  1287. minting coins

  1288. with palm branches

  1289. on it

  1290. as a symbol

  1291. of independence

  1292. and patriotism.

  1293. And Jesus

  1294. sees all this happening,

  1295. but His Spirit

  1296. is longing

  1297. to gather them

  1298. under His wings.

  1299. Verse 13 says,

  1300. They went out

  1301. to meet Him,

  1302. crying,

  1303. Hosanna!

  1304. Blessed is He

  1305. coming in the name

  1306. of the Lord,

1307. even the King of Israel.

  1308. Now,

  1309. even though

  1310. their expectations

  1311. of Christ

  1312. were at least mixed,

  1313. we could say that,

  1314. they didn't quite

  1315. have the right picture

  1316. of how His kingdom

  1317. was coming.

  1318. Their words

  1319. were right.

  1320. Jesus is most blessed.

  1321. And He is coming

1322. in the name of the Lord.

  1323. He says,

  1324. I am.

  1325. That's who's coming.

  1326. It's Jesus,

  1327. God Himself.

  1328. And He's coming

  1329. as King

  1330. not only over Israel,

  1331. not only over Jerusalem.

  1332. The phrase

  1333. Daughters of Zion

  1334. is another name

  1335. for Jerusalem,

  1336. but He's coming

  1337. as King over all.

  1338. Now,

  1339. think about

  1340. how one person's

  1341. life has led

  1342. to many others

  1343. worshiping Jesus

  1344. as King.

  1345. Lazarus,

  1346. his life,

  1347. his one life

  1348. in this world

  1349. was buried

  1350. like a seed

  1351. in that cave.

  1352. And now,

  1353. many are bearing

  1354. witness of a man

  1355. who was dead,

  1356. who got new life

1357. from the King of Kings.

  1358. Because of him,

  1359. large crowds

  1360. of a harvest

  1361. are now gathering

  1362. around Jesus Christ.

  1363. may this be true

  1364. of us

  1365. in your life,

  1366. in my life,

  1367. and in our congregation,

  1368. that if there is

  1369. genuine new life,

1370. it won't just be that one.

  1371. It will multiply.

  1372. Here's a soul

  1373. that got drawn

  1374. into the life

  1375. of the kingdom

  1376. of heaven

  1377. because this life

  1378. is buried with Christ

  1379. in this world,

  1380. and the harvest

  1381. follows,

1382. even if we don't see it.

  1383. It might take generations.

  1384. So which life

  1385. do you love most?

  1386. There's the life

  1387. of the flesh

  1388. and the life

  1389. of the Spirit,

  1390. of darkness

  1391. or of light,

  1392. the old

  1393. or the new,

  1394. the perishing

  1395. or the imperishable,

  1396. heavenly

  1397. or earthly.

  1398. Jesus says,

  1399. bury your earthly life

  1400. with Christ

  1401. and He will keep

  1402. and guard

  1403. and protect

  1404. and sanctify

  1405. your soul

  1406. for eternal life

  1407. in Him.

  1408. Well,

  1409. the fourth thing

  1410. I want to draw

  1411. your attention to

  1412. is that only

  1413. the Holy Spirit

  1414. can show disciples

  1415. the glory

  1416. of Christ's new kingdom.

  1417. Look at verse 14.

  1418. Jesus,

  1419. then Jesus,

  1420. finding a donkey colt,

  1421. He sat upon it

1422. even as it had been written.

  1423. Verse 15,

  1424. Do not fear,

  1425. daughter of Zion.

  1426. Behold,

  1427. your king comes

  1428. sitting on the full

  1429. of a donkey.

  1430. This is a scripture

  1431. was written,

  1432. we're told.

  1433. Where was this written?

  1434. It was Zechariah

    Zechariah 9:9

  1435. chapter 9,

  1436. verse 9,

  1437. which is a prophecy.

  1438. It's a word of hope

1439. to the people in exile

  1440. and it says,

  1441. Rejoice greatly,

  1442. O daughter of Zion.

  1443. Shout aloud,

  1444. O daughter of Jerusalem.

  1445. Behold,

1446. your king is coming to you

  1447. righteous

  1448. and having salvation

  1449. is He.

  1450. What type of king

  1451. should they be expecting?

  1452. The next words

  1453. in Zechariah 9,

  1454. He will be humble

1455. and mounted on a donkey,

  1456. on a colt,

1457. the full of a donkey.

  1458. See,

  1459. when the Romans

  1460. led a procession

  1461. through these major

  1462. capital cities

  1463. like Jerusalem,

1464. they got to do that

  1465. every time they had

  1466. gone to battle

  1467. and killed

  1468. 500 of the enemy.

  1469. they would come

1470. on a great war horse

1471. and it would be gruesome

1472. and it would be fleshly

1473. and to the human eye,

  1474. that's what they saw

  1475. as true honor

  1476. and true glory.

1477. Now look at verse 16,

  1478. when His disciples

  1479. did not know

  1480. these things at first,

  1481. but when Jesus

  1482. was glorified,

  1483. then they remembered

  1484. that these things

  1485. were written of Him

1486. and that He had done

1487. and that they had done

  1488. these things unto Him.

  1489. See,

  1490. even they

  1491. with their human eye,

  1492. they did not see

1493. the full glory of God

  1494. in the moment.

  1495. Christ had to finish

  1496. His work,

1497. rise to the right hand

  1498. of God

  1499. and the Spirit

  1500. descend on them.

  1501. Then the Spirit

  1502. showed them back

  1503. through the Bible

  1504. how all of this

  1505. pointed to Christ.

  1506. It has to be

  1507. the Holy Spirit

  1508. showing disciples

  1509. the glory of Christ

  1510. through all of Scripture.

  1511. Only God Himself

  1512. by the Holy Spirit

  1513. can open your eyes

  1514. to behold the glory

  1515. of this humble,

  1516. otherworldly King.

  1517. So how was it

  1518. that these people

  1519. came to believe

1520. that He was the true King?

  1521. The Spirit

  1522. had to make them

  1523. know that.

  1524. Don't you have

  1525. a loved one

  1526. that you wish

  1527. they would be able

  1528. to see and understand

  1529. Christ

  1530. and His glory?

  1531. Pray for the Spirit

  1532. to show them

  1533. and He'll do that

  1534. by His Word.

  1535. I love this line

1536. in the hymn we sang

  1537. that He speaks

1538. and listening to His voice,

  1539. that's how,

1540. new life the dead receive,

  1541. the mournful,

  1542. broken hearts rejoice,

  1543. the humble,

  1544. poor believe.

  1545. Have you experienced this?

  1546. Have you heard something

  1547. about Christ

  1548. from the Bible,

  1549. about the Gospel,

  1550. and no matter

  1551. how many years

  1552. you've been hearing

  1553. the Bible

  1554. and the Gospel,

  1555. it just comes alive

  1556. inside of you

  1557. in a way you can't explain?

  1558. If you've experienced that,

  1559. praise the Lord,

  1560. that means it's

  1561. His Holy Spirit

  1562. teaching you

  1563. and showing you

1564. what only He can teach you.

1565. This is what the disciples

1566. experienced and bore witness to

  1567. in Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24:32

  1568. verse 32.

  1569. They said,

  1570. listen,

  1571. our hearts burn

  1572. within us.

  1573. How?

1574. While He talked to us

  1575. on the road,

  1576. while He opened

  1577. to us

  1578. the Scriptures.

1579. That's what our Lord Jesus

  1580. and His glorified buddy

  1581. loves to do.

  1582. He loves to minister

  1583. to you

  1584. by His Word

  1585. and make your heart

  1586. burn within you

  1587. because He's given you

  1588. that new life.

  1589. Ask God

  1590. to make you

  1591. know Him.

  1592. What a glorious truth.

1593. You get to know God.

  1594. If someone asks you

  1595. how you're doing,

  1596. do you think about

1597. your life in this world

  1598. and all those things?

1599. Or do you think about

  1600. that simple truth?

  1601. How are you doing?

1602. I get to know God.

  1603. My soul

  1604. gets to know God.

  1605. That's the life

  1606. of the Spirit.

  1607. That's the light

  1608. of life

  1609. and light.

  1610. It's new.

  1611. It's imperishable.

  1612. It's heavenly.

1613. And you only experience it

  1614. when your life

  1615. in this world

  1616. has been buried

  1617. with Christ

  1618. and you're trusting Him.

  1619. He will

  1620. keep your soul

  1621. and guard it

  1622. and protect it

  1623. and sanctify it.

  1624. He will prepare

  1625. your soul

  1626. for eternal life

  1627. in His heavenly kingdom.

  1628. But Jesus says

  1629. count the cost

  1630. and that's what

1631. I want you to see

  1632. even with Lazarus'

  1633. own life.

  1634. It's that new life

  1635. in Christ

  1636. makes you a target

  1637. for Christ's enemies.

  1638. Remember,

  1639. He's the shepherd king

  1640. and where is He

  1641. marching to?

  1642. He's marching

  1643. the road

  1644. of the cross.

1645. So I want to focus

  1646. next on how

  1647. Satan used

  1648. the chief priests

  1649. and Pharisees.

  1650. And I just want

  1651. to be really clear.

  1652. The Romans

  1653. were part

  1654. representing all

1655. the rest of the world

  1656. and the Pharisees,

1657. the teachers of the law.

1658. They were part of it too.

  1659. But it's Satan

  1660. working through

  1661. these people

  1662. and God saved

  1663. Jews and Greeks

  1664. and Romans

  1665. as well following this.

  1666. There were churches

1667. planted among all of them.

  1668. So this is what

  1669. we are all like.

1670. But look at verse 10.

  1671. So the chief priests

  1672. made plans

  1673. to put Lazarus

  1674. to death as well.

  1675. You see,

  1676. new life,

1677. it makes you a target

  1678. for Christ's enemies.

  1679. Satan distorts

  1680. the reality

1681. and he tries to draw

  1682. people in

1683. to be part of that.

  1684. They said,

  1685. okay,

  1686. everybody here,

  1687. everybody,

  1688. these crowds all know

1689. Lazarus was the dead man.

  1690. He had been dead

  1691. four days.

  1692. Everybody knows that.

1693. So what do we need

  1694. to do?

1695. We need to distort reality.

1696. We need to kill Lazarus

  1697. because he can't

  1698. go on like this.

  1699. They already had plans

  1700. to kill Jesus.

  1701. Now they have plans

  1702. to kill his church.

  1703. See,

1704. the new life of Christ

  1705. made Christ a target,

  1706. obviously,

  1707. but it also makes

  1708. a target of anyone

  1709. who belongs to the

  1710. kingdom of light.

  1711. Now verse 11 says,

1712. because on account of him,

  1713. this dead man,

  1714. Lazarus,

  1715. who got new life,

  1716. many of the Jews

  1717. departed and believed

  1718. in Jesus.

  1719. See,

  1720. their religion,

1721. it was not about truth.

  1722. It was about numbers.

  1723. I feel like I need

  1724. to repeat that

  1725. one more time.

  1726. The enemies of Christ,

  1727. their religion

  1728. was not about

  1729. the truth

  1730. of the reality.

  1731. Distort the reality

  1732. because their religion

  1733. was about numbers.

  1734. enemies,

  1735. those are enemies

  1736. of Christ.

  1737. They're coming after

  1738. Christ's people.

  1739. In 1 Kings chapter 1,

    1 Kings 1 chapter mention

  1740. we're told

  1741. all these wonderful,

  1742. glorious promises

  1743. about David

1744. and the son of David,

1745. the one who would come

1746. from the line of David.

  1747. When David is time

1748. to hand over the crown

  1749. and the throne

  1750. to the next,

  1751. this is where Israel

  1752. gets shredded apart.

  1753. But something happens

  1754. before that.

  1755. We read that David

  1756. gave his royal mule

  1757. to Solomon

  1758. and paraded Solomon

  1759. into Jerusalem.

  1760. And Solomon was anointed

  1761. and he was enthroned

  1762. in public

  1763. with triumphal celebration.

  1764. So who would be

  1765. the one who would

  1766. sit on that throne

  1767. in Jerusalem

  1768. and rule over

  1769. all the people?

  1770. Not ultimately Solomon.

  1771. It was pointing

  1772. to Christ.

  1773. Of course he's going

  1774. to be a target

  1775. to God's enemies.

  1776. They want the power

  1777. and the money

  1778. and the numbers.

  1779. Look at verse 19.

  1780. The Pharisees

  1781. therefore said

  1782. to themselves,

  1783. see how you profit

  1784. nothing.

  1785. In other words,

  1786. you guys are losing.

  1787. Behold,

  1788. the world,

  1789. the cosmos

  1790. has gone after him.

  1791. What they saw

  1792. as their great problem

  1793. that the whole world

  1794. is going after Christ,

1795. it was also a prophecy.

  1796. Their problem

  1797. was a prophecy.

  1798. The world is going

  1799. after this man

1800. as though he's the king.

  1801. Yes,

1802. and wait till you see him

  1803. in his glory.

  1804. The world

  1805. goes after him.

  1806. Zechariah 9.10

  1807. describes Christ

  1808. that he will speak

  1809. peace to who?

  1810. To the nations

  1811. and his rule

  1812. shall be from sea

  1813. to sea

  1814. and from the river

  1815. to the ends

  1816. of the earth.

  1817. Everywhere

  1818. that his word

  1819. by the power

  1820. of the spirit

  1821. flows,

  1822. everywhere,

  1823. it wins.

  1824. It prevails.

  1825. So picture that

  1826. like a Tucson desert

1827. in the middle of Arizona,

  1828. dry as can be.

  1829. And then here comes

  1830. the monsoon river

1831. just forms out of nothing.

  1832. Nothing can stop it.

  1833. And you can picture

  1834. a big boulder,

  1835. you know,

1836. or like turns in the desert

  1837. and stuff like that.

  1838. Nothing can stop it.

  1839. It's going to flow

1840. and it's going to cover

  1841. that entire desert

  1842. like an ocean.

  1843. That's what the word

  1844. by the power

1845. of the spirit of God

  1846. does.

  1847. Well,

  1848. Martin Luther

  1849. was also targeted

1850. by the enemies of God

1851. and he wrote this hymn

  1852. in a moment

  1853. of great torment

  1854. and it became

  1855. the battle hymn

  1856. of the Reformation.

  1857. Luther,

  1858. notice how weak

  1859. he makes himself

  1860. compared to the might

  1861. of God.

  1862. Luther wrote,

  1863. did we

  1864. in our own strength

  1865. confide

  1866. our striving

  1867. would be losing.

  1868. For though this world

  1869. with devils filled

  1870. should threaten

  1871. to undo us,

  1872. we will not fear

  1873. for God

  1874. has willed

  1875. his truth

  1876. to triumph

  1877. through us.

  1878. So if you are

  1879. in the kingdom

  1880. of heaven

  1881. and he's given you

1882. new life for the soul,

  1883. you do not need

  1884. to fear those enemies.

  1885. Know that you will

  1886. have a target

  1887. on your back

1888. but do not fear them.

  1889. They belong

  1890. to the kingdom

  1891. of the flesh.

  1892. You are joined

  1893. to Christ

  1894. in the spiritual kingdom.

  1895. The darkness

  1896. wants to oppose

  1897. the light

  1898. but you belong

  1899. to the light.

  1900. The old

  1901. resists

  1902. the new kingdom,

  1903. the new life.

  1904. The old

  1905. will perish away.

  1906. The kingdom

  1907. of Christ

  1908. will endure

  1909. forever.

  1910. Which life

  1911. do you love

  1912. most?

  1913. Why would you

  1914. not bury

  1915. your earthly life?

  1916. Why would you

  1917. not trust

  1918. your soul

  1919. to the maker

  1920. of heaven

  1921. and earth

  1922. knowing that

  1923. he will keep

  1924. it and guard

  1925. it and protect

  1926. you and sanctify

  1927. your soul

  1928. for eternity

  1929. with him?

  1930. Well the last

  1931. observation

  1932. is that new

  1933. life

  1934. new life

  1935. is reformed

  1936. by Christ's

  1937. teaching.

  1938. When Christ

  1939. gives you new

  1940. life,

  1941. he doesn't just

  1942. leave you there

  1943. like a little

  1944. baby.

  1945. He teaches

  1946. you,

  1947. he feeds

  1948. you,

  1949. he grows

  1950. you,

  1951. he changes

  1952. you,

  1953. matures

  1954. you.

  1955. We're to

  1956. establish

  1957. and equip.

  1958. You know,

  1959. the church

  1960. is not just

  1961. to be planted

  1962. with shallow

  1963. roots,

  1964. we're to be

  1965. rooted and

  1966. grounded and

  1967. rising up

  1968. and bearing

  1969. fruit,

  1970. equipped like

  1971. an army

  1972. taking charge

  1973. with Christ

  1974. now,

  1975. going out.

  1976. And how

  1977. does he do

  1978. that?

  1979. How does he

  1980. establish and

  1981. equip us and

  1982. reform us?

  1983. He changes

  1984. your view of

  1985. others,

  1986. he changes

  1987. your view of

  1988. success,

  1989. of purpose,

  1990. and of honor.

  1991. Let's walk

  1992. through those

  1993. four.

  1994. First,

  1995. new life

  1996. in Christ,

  1997. it redefines

  1998. your view

  1999. of others.

  2000. Look at

  2001. verse 20.

  2002. There were

  2003. some

  2004. Greeks.

  2005. Now,

  2006. Greeks

  2007. represent

  2008. the world.

  2009. You know,

  2010. to the

  2011. Jewish mind,

  2012. you've got

  2013. the Jews

  2014. and you've

  2015. got everyone

  2016. else.

  2017. And they're

  2018. following after

  2019. Alexander the

  2020. Great conquered

  2021. the known

  2022. world,

  2023. so everyone

  2024. else is

  2025. Greeks.

  2026. And that's

  2027. the lingua

  2028. franca,

  2029. the language

  2030. they spoke.

  2031. There were

  2032. some Jews

  2033. among them

  2034. that came

  2035. up to

  2036. worship at

  2037. the feast.

  2038. Verse 21

  2039. said,

  2040. So these

  2041. came to

  2042. Philip,

  2043. who was

  2044. from Bethsaida

  2045. in Galilee,

  2046. and asked

  2047. him,

  2048. Sir,

  2049. we desire

  2050. to see

  2051. Jesus.

  2052. Now,

  2053. you notice

  2054. what's happening

  2055. is there's

  2056. no longer

  2057. Christ only

  2058. coming for

  2059. the Jews

  2060. already.

  2061. Remember that

  2062. prophecy?

  2063. The world

  2064. has gone

  2065. after him.

  2066. Yes,

  2067. and wait

  2068. till you

  2069. see.

  2070. Now,

  2071. in verse 22,

  2072. Philip went

  2073. and told

  2074. Andrew.

  2075. Andrew and

  2076. Philip went

  2077. and told

  2078. Jesus.

  2079. Now,

  2080. here Jesus

  2081. begins his

  2082. teaching.

  2083. We're going

  2084. to start it

  2085. here,

  2086. and the next

  2087. time we get

  2088. to John

  2089. will continue.

  2090. Verse 23,

  2091. Jesus answered

  2092. them,

  2093. The hour has

  2094. come for the

  2095. Son of Man

  2096. to be glorified.

  2097. When Jesus

  2098. hears that

  2099. the Greeks,

  2100. these non-Jews,

  2101. are coming to

  2102. see him,

  2103. Jesus knows

  2104. this is the

  2105. hour.

  2106. They are being

  2107. drawn here for

  2108. this very purpose.

  2109. They will be

  2110. at the Passover.

  2111. They will be

  2112. ones who will

  2113. watch me die,

  2114. and they will be

  2115. ones who will

  2116. bear witness with

  2117. their own eyes

  2118. that I raised

  2119. from the dead.

  2120. I laid down

  2121. my life so I

  2122. can take it up

  2123. again,

  2124. and these Greeks

  2125. who are coming

  2126. to see me,

  2127. they are here

  2128. for my divine

  2129. purpose.

  2130. They will be

  2131. the ones that

  2132. go back to

  2133. their own cities,

  2134. to their own

  2135. people,

  2136. some of them

  2137. to their own

  2138. countries,

  2139. bearing witness

  2140. of what they

  2141. are about to

  2142. see.

  2143. And to the

  2144. disciples,

  2145. he wants them

  2146. to be ready.

  2147. See,

  2148. the new life,

  2149. this one little

  2150. life with Lazarus,

  2151. this is getting

  2152. all of you ready

  2153. for the new

  2154. life that's about

  2155. to come.

  2156. your view of

  2157. these Greeks

  2158. needs to change.

  2159. These are your

  2160. family.

  2161. This is the

  2162. church.

  2163. These are your

  2164. brothers in the

  2165. battle.

  2166. Bring them on.

  2167. Let them hear my

  2168. teaching,

  2169. Jesus says.

  2170. Number two,

  2171. new life in

  2172. Christ,

  2173. it redefines not

  2174. only your view

  2175. of others,

  2176. it redefines your

  2177. view of success.

  2178. there were

  2179. these missionaries

  2180. who left

  2181. everything,

  2182. they had worked

  2183. hard,

  2184. they were educated,

  2185. and they felt

  2186. called to go to

  2187. a mission field

  2188. in a remote

  2189. part of the

  2190. world.

  2191. Well,

  2192. believers and

  2193. friends of theirs

  2194. from a church

  2195. went and visited

  2196. them and just

  2197. had to travel so

  2198. long to finally

  2199. get to where

  2200. they were.

  2201. And one of the

  2202. friends just

  2203. very innocently

  2204. just said,

  2205. man,

  2206. you guys are

  2207. really buried

  2208. way out here,

  2209. aren't you?

  2210. And the

  2211. missionaries

  2212. paraphrased

  2213. verse 24.

  2214. Jesus says,

  2215. truly,

  2216. truly,

  2217. I say to

  2218. you,

  2219. unless the

  2220. grain of

  2221. wheat falls

  2222. into the

  2223. earth and

  2224. dies,

  2225. it abides

  2226. alone,

  2227. but if it

  2228. dies,

  2229. it brings

  2230. forth much

  2231. fruit.

  2232. The

  2233. missionaries

  2234. said,

  2235. yes,

  2236. we are

  2237. buried way

  2238. out here.

  2239. And that's

  2240. how God

  2241. will bring

  2242. forth a

  2243. harvest.

  2244. See how

  2245. life in

  2246. Christ is

  2247. life abundant?

  2248. Life,

  2249. the new

  2250. life that

  2251. Christ brings,

  2252. it redefines

  2253. your view

  2254. of others,

  2255. it redefines

  2256. your view

  2257. of success,

  2258. and it

  2259. redefines

  2260. your view

  2261. of purpose.

  2262. In verse

  2263. 25,

  2264. read that,

  2265. Jesus said,

  2266. he that

  2267. loves his

  2268. soul shall

  2269. lose it.

  2270. In the

  2271. Greek,

  2272. it's soul.

  2273. Now think

  2274. about this

  2275. in the

  2276. context.

  2277. Remember,

  2278. Lazarus is

  2279. mentioned here.

  2280. He's a little

  2281. picture of one

  2282. seed being

  2283. buried,

  2284. and without

  2285. the soul,

  2286. the body

  2287. is dead.

  2288. So he

  2289. that loves

  2290. his soul,

  2291. in other

  2292. words,

  2293. loves having

  2294. your soul

  2295. and your

  2296. body in

  2297. this world,

  2298. in this

  2299. life,

  2300. this earthly

  2301. life,

  2302. shall lose

  2303. it.

  2304. But he

  2305. that hates

  2306. his soul

  2307. in this

  2308. world,

  2309. he that

  2310. hates his

  2311. soul in

  2312. this world

  2313. shall keep

  2314. it to

  2315. everlasting

  2316. life.

  2317. That's a

  2318. hard teaching.

  2319. In the

  2320. Greek,

  2321. that's exactly

  2322. how it reads.

  2323. He that

  2324. hates his

  2325. soul in

  2326. this world

  2327. shall keep

  2328. it to

  2329. everlasting

  2330. life.

  2331. life.

  2332. So notice,

  2333. the soul

  2334. continues.

  2335. If you're

  2336. loving your

  2337. soul in

  2338. the life

  2339. it has

  2340. right now

  2341. in the

  2342. body,

  2343. on this

  2344. world,

  2345. if that's

  2346. what you

  2347. love,

  2348. you'll

  2349. lose it.

  2350. But that

  2351. same soul

  2352. for everlasting

  2353. life will

  2354. be kept.

  2355. You will

  2356. keep it if you

  2357. bury your

  2358. life in the

  2359. body,

  2360. in the

  2361. flesh,

  2362. in this

  2363. earthly world

  2364. now.

  2365. That's the

  2366. hope of your

  2367. soul for

  2368. eternity.

  2369. Bury your

  2370. soul in

  2371. Christ if you

  2372. want to keep

  2373. it.

  2374. Lay down

  2375. your earthly

  2376. life in

  2377. Christ,

  2378. identify with

  2379. him in his

  2380. death and

  2381. burial in

  2382. this life,

  2383. and your

  2384. soul will

  2385. have the

  2386. hope of

  2387. resurrection

  2388. for the

  2389. life to

  2390. come.

  2391. Deuteronomy

  2392. 4.9 says,

  2393. take care and

  2394. keep your

  2395. soul diligently

  2396. lest you

  2397. forget the

  2398. things that

  2399. you have

  2400. seen,

  2401. and lest

  2402. they depart

  2403. from your

  2404. heart all

  2405. the days

  2406. of your

  2407. life.

  2408. So how

  2409. do you keep

  2410. your soul?

  2411. You

  2412. remember what

  2413. God has

  2414. shown you.

  2415. You

  2416. remember what

  2417. your eyes

  2418. have seen

  2419. of the

  2420. glory of

  2421. God through

  2422. his word

  2423. by the

  2424. help of

  2425. the spirit.

  2426. And the

  2427. last one is

  2428. that new

  2429. life in

  2430. Christ,

  2431. it redefines

  2432. your view

  2433. of honor.

  2434. It

  2435. redefines

  2436. your view

  2437. of honor.

  2438. Look at

  2439. verse 26,

  2440. our last

  2441. verse.

  2442. Jesus says,

  2443. if anyone

  2444. serves me,

  2445. let him

  2446. follow me,

  2447. and where

  2448. I am,

  2449. there also

  2450. shall my

  2451. servant

  2452. be.

  2453. And if

  2454. anyone

  2455. serve me,

  2456. him will

  2457. my father

  2458. honor.

  2459. The

  2460. greatest

  2461. honor

  2462. is

  2463. redefined.

  2464. The

  2465. greatest

  2466. honor you

  2467. can have

  2468. in this

  2469. life is

  2470. to serve

  2471. Christ.

  2472. It's to

  2473. follow

  2474. him.

  2475. It's to

  2476. know him.

  2477. You see

  2478. the promise?

  2479. You get

  2480. to be

  2481. with him.

  2482. You get

  2483. to be

  2484. with Christ

  2485. forever.

  2486. That's the

  2487. greatest

  2488. honor the

  2489. father can

  2490. show you.

  2491. His son

  2492. enthroned,

  2493. ruling over

  2494. the new

  2495. heavens and

  2496. the earth,

  2497. and you

  2498. are with

  2499. him.

  2500. So

  2501. Christ's

  2502. new life,

  2503. it transforms

  2504. everything.

  2505. Which life

  2506. do you

  2507. love most?

  2508. Romans 6

  2509. 4 says

  2510. that we

  2511. were buried

  2512. therefore with

  2513. Christ in

  2514. baptism into

  2515. death in

  2516. order that

  2517. just as

  2518. Christ was

  2519. raised from

  2520. the dead

  2521. by the

  2522. glory of

  2523. the father,

  2524. we too

  2525. might walk

  2526. in newness

  2527. of life.

  2528. If Christ

  2529. has saved

  2530. you and

  2531. given your

  2532. soul life

  2533. in him,

  2534. then you

  2535. are like

  2536. Lazarus,

  2537. you are

  2538. living for

  2539. him.

  2540. He raised

  2541. you,

  2542. he gave

  2543. you new

  2544. life in

  2545. the soul

  2546. now so

  2547. that you

  2548. will walk

  2549. in that

  2550. newness of

  2551. life.

  2552. Don't you

  2553. want heaven

  2554. to be in

  2555. you before

  2556. you're in

  2557. heaven?

  2558. sin?

  2559. I know the

  2560. battle against

  2561. the flesh

  2562. in this

  2563. life in

  2564. this world,

  2565. sometimes it

  2566. feels like

  2567. we're losing,

  2568. but remember

  2569. the promise,

  2570. we sang this,

  2571. that Jesus

  2572. breaks the

  2573. power of

  2574. reigning sin,

  2575. he sets the

  2576. prisoner free,

  2577. and it's his

  2578. blood that

  2579. can make the

  2580. foulest clean,

  2581. even you and

  2582. me,

  2583. because his

  2584. blood availed

  2585. for me.

  2586. There are

  2587. two lives,

  2588. Jesus gives

  2589. new life,

  2590. and it

  2591. changes

  2592. everything.

  2593. My prayer

  2594. for you has

  2595. simply been

  2596. that,

  2597. that you

  2598. will want

  2599. and love

  2600. the life

  2601. of his

  2602. kingdom more

  2603. than anything

  2604. else,

  2605. and that by

  2606. going to

  2607. Christ once

  2608. again today,

  2609. you will

  2610. have that,

  2611. that life

  2612. is yours.

  2613. Let's pray.

  2614. Amen.

  2615. from Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:22

  2616. chapter 4,

  2617. verse 22.

  2618. Lord,

  2619. help us to

  2620. put off our

  2621. old self,

  2622. which belongs

  2623. to our

  2624. former manner

  2625. of life.

  2626. That old

  2627. life has been

  2628. corrupted,

  2629. our desires

  2630. have been

  2631. deceitful,

  2632. and help us

  2633. instead,

  2634. Lord,

  2635. to be renewed

  2636. in the spirit
