  1. Jonah chapter 1. I'm going to read the whole chapter starting from verse 1 all the way through verse 17.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  2. As you hear me read this, remember, this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  3. Once I'm done reading Jonah chapter 1, I'll say this is the word of the Lord and the church will respond, thanks be to God.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  4. Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.

  5. But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish.

  6. So he paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.

  7. But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up.

  8. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his God.

  9. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them.

  10. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship, and had lain down, and was fast asleep.

  11. So the captain came and said to him, What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your God.

  12. Perhaps the God will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.

  13. And they said to one another, Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.

  14. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

  15. Then they said to him, Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us.

  16. What is your occupation, and where do you come from?

  17. What is your country, and of what people are you?

  18. And he said to them, I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.

  19. Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, What is this that you have done?

  20. For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.

  21. Verse 11,

  22. Then they said to him, What shall we do to you that the sea may quiet down for us?

  23. For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

  24. He said to them, Pick me up and hurl me into the sea.

  25. Then the sea will quiet down for you.

  26. For I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.

  27. Nevertheless, the men rode harder to get back to dry land, but when they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

  28. Therefore they called out to the Lord, O Lord, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not on us innocent blood.

  29. For you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.

  30. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.

  31. Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

  32. And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah.

  33. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

  34. This is the word of the Lord.

  35. Thanks be to God.

  36. You may be seated.

  37. Would you pray with me?

  38. Oh God, you are a God whose word goes forth.

  39. And with your word is the presence of God himself.

  40. We pray, Lord, that you will speak to us by your word and by the presence of your Holy Spirit to your people today.

  41. Amen.

  42. Quote,

  43. This little book of Jonah is a highly complex and artistic short story.

  44. In order to take in the kaleidoscope of lessons found in this book,

  45. the reader must approach the text with openness and humility,

  46. keep a teachable attitude, listen calmly, proceed slowly, and ponder meditatively.

  47. This is not easy for us moderns.

  48. It is like climbing a mountain.

  49. It takes painstaking effort and self-discipline,

  50. but the rewards at the end are worth the effort.

  51. That's how Brian Estelle introduces the book of Jonah.

  52. And his PhD is in the Semitic languages and literature of this region in the ancient world.

  53. He's a professor at Westminster.

  54. The message I want to show for you today out of this kaleidoscope,

  55. I want to try to draw your focus to one theme,

  56. and it's simply this.

  57. Beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  58. you can't escape the presence of the Lord.

  59. You can't escape the presence of the Lord.

  60. Look at verse 3.

  61. We're told in verse 3 that Jonah was fleeing from the presence of the Lord.

  62. He was going away from the presence of the Lord.

  63. Now look down at verse 10.

  64. The men knew that Jonah was fleeing from the presence of the Lord,

  65. because he told them.

  66. That's the truth I've been praying about for you and for me today.

  67. You can't escape the presence of the Lord.

  68. I want to simply walk through that theme.

  69. We're going to go verse by verse through this chapter.

  70. First, I need to give a little bit of context,

  71. because you see how it starts.

  72. In verse 1,

  73. We get a few clues here from this first verse.

  74. This is Jonah, son of Amittai, so to not be confused.

  75. The clue that we can then trace back,

  76. if you look up that name Jonah, or even son of Amittai,

  77. we can search the Bible,

  78. and it takes us to 2 Kings 14, verse 25.

    2 Kings 14:25

  79. 2 Kings 14.

  80. And this is what 2 Kings says,

  81. that Jeroboam II was king in Samaria.

  82. Samaria is the northern part,

  83. the ten tribes of the north.

  84. And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  85. When the Lord saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter,

  86. and why was that?

  87. Well, who was the oppressor of King Jeroboam II?

  88. It was Assyria.

  89. It was their neighbor to the east,

  90. taking over the land back from Egypt.

  91. God raised up Assyria to judge Israel.

  92. Israel was taxing them very heavily.

  93. They had taken over several of those cities

  94. on those major trade routes.

  95. They were cutting off their trade.

  96. They were cramping them economically,

  97. and politically, and militarily.

  98. So the Lord let that wicked king, Jeroboam II,

  99. push back the borders of Israel.

  100. Even though he's a wicked king

  101. that had done evil in the eyes of the Lord,

  102. during his reign,

  103. the Lord let him push Assyria back a bit.

  104. This happened, 2 Kings 14 says,

  105. in accordance with the word of the Lord,

  106. the God of Israel,

  107. spoken through his servant,

  108. listen, Jonah, son of Amittite.

  109. That's our Jonah.

  110. And we get a clue here.

  111. He's the prophet from Gath Hefer.

  112. So that situates him on the map as well.

  113. All of this, I believe, is significant.

  114. So bear with me.

  115. And why did the Lord allow this wicked king

  116. to push Assyria back?

  117. Because the Lord promised to not blot out

  118. the name of Israel from under heaven.

  119. So you get the context of the book of Jonah.

  120. In that first verse, it's Jonah, son of Amittite.

  121. The word of the Lord comes to him.

  122. Now the context tells us,

  123. okay, Israel has wickedness in their land.

  124. And we can look at the timeline.

  125. Jonah would have come a little bit after Elijah and Elisha.

  126. So a little bit after the great prophet Elijah.

  127. Well, what do we know about Elijah?

  128. This was a time of wickedness in the northern tribes,

  129. wickedness in Israel.

  130. They rebelled against the Lord.

  131. Remember the prophets of Baal rising up,

  132. trying to kill off all of the prophets of God.

  133. Jonah comes on the heels of that.

  134. And even though the next king, Jeroboam II,

  135. was very, very wicked,

  136. God still remained faithful.

  137. He was long-suffering toward Israel.

  138. And that's the context in which the word of the Lord

  139. now comes to a known prophet,

  140. Jonah, son of Amittite,

  141. the prophet representing all those

  142. through whom God was ministering his word

  143. at the time of this wicked king.

  144. So my first observation is simply that

  145. you know the holy presence of God

  146. through his word.

  147. When the word of the Lord comes,

  148. you're getting the presence of the Lord

  149. through his word.

  150. That's the pattern we see in all of the scriptures.

  151. Think of Isaiah.

  152. The word of the Lord came to Isaiah.

  153. He knew he was in the presence of a holy God.

  154. The word of the Lord came to Moses.

  155. He had to take off his shoes.

  156. He's on holy ground.

  157. The word of the Lord came to the apostle John

  158. in the book of Revelation,

  159. and he saw a great vision.

  160. So the word and the presence of the Lord

  161. are tied together.

  162. You know the holy presence of the Lord

  163. by his word.

  164. Have you ever heard the word of the Lord?

  165. Maybe in private,

  166. maybe with the people of God,

  167. you've heard the word of the Lord,

  168. and you just have that sense

  169. that sweeps over you.

  170. You can't explain it to someone

  171. who's never experienced it.

  172. The Lord is here with his people.

  173. Have you ever experienced that?

  174. So verse one, we're told,

  175. the word of the Lord came to Jonah,

  176. son of Amittai.

  177. Well, Jonah, his name means dove,

  178. and the root also means oppress.

  179. This is interesting because, you know,

  180. a dove is a very,

  181. it's a creature that's liable to oppression,

  182. and it can very easily become prey of others.

  183. The prophet Hosea, Hosea 711,

  184. he uses that picture of a dove,

  185. the root word is oppression,

  186. and he says this of Ephraim.

  187. Ephraim was like a dove,

  188. silly and without sense,

  189. calling to Egypt,

  190. going to Assyria.

  191. Israel was like a dove.

  192. Israel was liable to be oppressed

  193. by these kingdoms of the world

  194. that they keep chasing.

  195. So you could say in that sense

  196. that even the name Jonah

  197. is making him a representative

  198. of this rebellious, fickle,

  199. wandering Israel.

  200. And he's from Gath Heifer,

  201. we're told in 2 Kings 14.

  202. I'll place this with some points of reference

  203. that you know,

  204. again, I believe this is significant.

  205. So where is Gath Heifer?

  206. It's very close to Nazareth.

  207. We'll start with that.

  208. So it's north of the,

  209. you know, northern part of Israel.

  210. That's where the 10 rebellious tribes are.

  211. And more specifically,

  212. let's go all the way back

  213. to the Mediterranean Sea.

  214. Picture yourself on continental Europe.

  215. You travel south.

  216. So you're on, you know, Italy.

  217. You travel across the Mediterranean,

  218. past the Greek islands

  219. until you stop.

  220. The very eastern border

  221. of the Mediterranean Sea,

  222. that's Israel.

  223. The port city there is,

  224. today would be Tel Aviv.

  225. From Tel Aviv, you'd cross,

  226. you'd keep going inland,

  227. you'd go over Mount Carmel

  228. remember that's where Elijah stood.

  229. You go over Mount Carmel

  230. and then you're in this region of Gath Heifer,

  231. not too far away from Nazareth

  232. before the Sea of Galilee.

  233. So that's where Jonah came from.

  234. Now we saw back in John chapter 7, 52,

    John 7 chapter mention

  235. remember how they mocked Jesus

  236. that never a prophet came out of Nazareth?

  237. Well, here we've got Elijah and Jonah

  238. as examples to the contrary.

  239. Now look at verse 2.

  240. The word of the Lord came to him saying what?

  241. saying, arise, go to Nineveh.

  242. Nineveh.

  243. And how is Nineveh described in your Bible?

  244. That great city.

  245. Even by modern terms,

  246. Nineveh was a great city.

  247. Where is Nineveh located?

  248. It would be in present day Iraq,

  249. about 200 miles north of Baghdad,

  250. on the eastern bank of the Tigris River.

  251. Was it a great city?

  252. The word great is used 14 times

  253. in these four little chapters of Jonah.

  254. It was a great city.

  255. Yes, it was 60 miles long.

  256. Think how far you could drive in all directions

  257. 60 miles from right here.

  258. That's how big the city of Nineveh was.

  259. And it had a wall that was 100 feet high.

  260. Kids, you know how many feet is a basketball hoop?

  261. 10 feet.

  262. So stack up 10 basketball hoops.

  263. That's 100 feet.

  264. That's how tall the walls of Nineveh were.

  265. And that wall of Nineveh

  266. had a series of towers

  267. that, 1,500 towers all around it

  268. that went up 200 feet.

  269. So twice the size of the wall.

  270. It was so wide that three chariots

  271. could ride on it all at once.

  272. Nineveh was indeed a great city.

  273. God tells Jonah,

  274. go to Nineveh,

  275. to that great city,

  276. but cry out against it.

  277. Can you imagine Jonah walking up

  278. to these overwhelming walls

  279. and crying out against that city,

  280. that great city?

  281. Why was he to do this?

  282. Verse 3 says,

  283. for their evil,

  284. their disaster,

  285. their wickedness,

  286. nine times that word is used

  287. in the book of Jonah,

  288. it has come up before me.

  289. So there's the Lord God

  290. enthroned over all his creation.

  291. And this great city especially

  292. is known for the wickedness

  293. that rises up to his holy court.

  294. And he tells little Jonah from Israel,

  295. go cry out against them.

  296. What was it about Nineveh

  297. that was so wicked?

  298. Do we know anything about them today?

  299. We know a lot about this Assyrian army.

  300. The worst displays of their violence

  301. were happening in the capital city.

  302. I know we've got children here.

  303. We want children here.

  304. I'm going to use some terms

  305. that they don't need to understand.

  306. But some of them are inevitable.

  307. That's the Bible, right?

  308. So Nineveh was so wicked,

  309. they would flay the teenagers

  310. of those they conquered.

  311. They would mock their victims

  312. that they had taken over

  313. by cutting off just one of their arms

  314. so they could tease them

  315. by shaking the other hand.

  316. As you would enter Nineveh,

  317. there were, you know,

  318. like we have beautiful lamps

  319. and lights that kind of mark

  320. the main entrance.

  321. The main entrance to Nineveh

  322. were spikes

  323. and they would decapitate their victims

  324. and that's what they would display

  325. as the trophies on their spikes

  326. as you entered this great city of Nineveh

  327. whose wickedness came up to the Lord.

  328. That's why the prophet Nahum

  329. in Nahum 3.1 said,

  330. Woe to Nineveh, the bloody city.

  331. It is all full of lies and robbery.

  332. Its victim praise never departs.

  333. If you go into Nineveh as a weakling,

  334. you're never coming out of there alive.

  335. A particular Baptist commentator,

  336. John Gill said,

  337. the measure of their idolatry,

  338. bloodshed and oppression were full.

  339. They were filled up.

  340. They committed sins so openly, boldly

  341. in the sight of the Lord

  342. as if it were against him,

  343. a heavy-handed sin against God, the creator.

  344. And that's what made Nineveh now ripe

  345. for destruction.

  346. Now the Lord sees all,

  347. Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount,

  348. even a hair can fall from your head.

  349. And, you know, look at the birds

  350. and the lilies.

  351. The Father knows them all.

  352. But the evil of this city

  353. has come up before God's holy court

  354. in a special way.

  355. And now God's judgment,

  356. because he is just.

  357. His just wrath is coming against

  358. this wicked city of Nineveh.

  359. Now, if you put yourself in Israel at this time,

  360. the judgment of God against your oppressor

  361. should be good news.

  362. It means you're going to get salvation

  363. through judgment.

  364. God's judgment is coming

  365. and through his judgment,

  366. he brings salvation.

  367. That's how we always see,

  368. he always brings salvation through judgment.

  369. But Jonah's reaction is surprising, right?

  370. The presence, the presence,

  371. the word of the Lord came to Jonah.

  372. But look at verse 3.

  373. Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish

  374. from the presence of the Lord.

  375. Jonah didn't want to go cry out

  376. to the city of Nineveh.

  377. And that's surprising to us.

  378. Instead, when the holy presence of God

  379. comes to this man,

  380. he reacts the same way Adam and Eve reacted

  381. after they had been proud

  382. and thought they knew better than the Lord.

  383. Listen to how similar this language is

  384. in Genesis 3.8.

  385. They heard the voice of the Lord God.

  386. See, they heard the voice of the Lord God

  387. walking in the garden.

  388. There's this presence tied to his word

  389. in the cool of the day.

  390. And Adam and his wife hid themselves

  391. from the presence of the Lord.

  392. Isn't that what we always do

  393. when our sin is exposed

  394. in the presence of the holy God

  395. by his word?

  396. We do the same as Adam and Eve,

  397. the same as Jonah.

  398. But the author of this little book

  399. goes a long way to prove to us

  400. that you can't escape

  401. the presence of the Lord.

  402. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

  403. Why was Jonah, in this case,

  404. why was he fleeing,

  405. going the opposite direction of Nineveh?

  406. I'm going to argue that it was

  407. because of his pride.

  408. He wanted to see judgment for Nineveh,

  409. not long-suffering toward Nineveh.

  410. That's why he didn't go cry out to them.

  411. And turn with me back a couple pages

  412. to Jonah chapter 4.

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  413. I want you to see this for yourself.

  414. Jonah chapter 4, verse 1.

    Jonah 4:1

  415. When God was long-suffering toward Nineveh,

  416. we read in chapter 4,

  417. this displeased Jonah exceedingly.

  418. He became angry,

  419. and he prayed, verse 2,

  420. Lord, this is what I said back in my country.

  421. So before he left to go to Tarshish,

  422. this is exactly why he's angry.

  423. That's why I fled to Tarshish.

  424. I know that you're a gracious, merciful God.

  425. I know you're slow to anger,

  426. abundant in loving kindness,

  427. one who relents in doing harm.

  428. That's why Jonah's so angry.

  429. I knew he would be long-suffering toward them.

  430. I knew that God desires that none should perish.

  431. Verse 3, we're told,

  432. and now pay attention to the language here.

  433. Jonah went,

  434. what's the next word?

  435. He went,

  436. everybody say it,

  437. down.

  438. Oh, I'm sorry,

  439. I'm back in chapter 1.

  440. Let's try that again.

  441. So turn back to chapter 1.

  442. In his pride,

  443. he's angry,

  444. and he said,

  445. back in his country,

  446. I knew you would be long-suffering toward them.

  447. Now chapter 1, verse 3,

  448. Jonah then went down.

  449. I want you to pay attention every time he says,

  450. or creates that picture of Jonah going down,

  451. and down,

  452. and down,

  453. and down.

  454. Jonah went down to Joppa.

  455. See, God is above and thrown,

  456. looking out over all.

  457. It's the court of God that this wickedness rises up to.

  458. God is above,

  459. and Jonah's going down,

  460. away from the presence of the Lord.

  461. And he found a ship going to Tarshish,

  462. so he paid the fare thereof,

  463. and went down into it.

  464. There he goes further down,

  465. into the ship now.

  466. He's tucked in,

  467. enclosed,

  468. away from God's earthly kingdom,

  469. and national Israel.

  470. Another commentator said,

  471. in order to be cleared of any fresh order from the Lord,

  472. and to not have to go speak to the Ninevites,

  473. that's why he keeps going down.

  474. And he went with them,

  475. to Tarshish,

  476. away from the presence of the Lord.

  477. It's our pride,

  478. ultimately,

  479. it's our pride that hates the presence of our holy creator God.

  480. Your pride and mine,

  481. we want to escape the presence of the Lord.

  482. That's what we want.

  483. But we're going to see here,

  484. how the Lord makes his presence undeniable.

  485. The Lord makes his presence undeniable.

  486. Look at verse 4.

  487. The Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea,

  488. and there was a mighty tempest on the sea.

  489. John Gilligan said,

  490. God took a wind out of his treasury,

  491. and hurled it into the languages,

  492. into that sea.

  493. That part of the sea where Jonah was specifically.

  494. The winds,

  495. the very winds are at God's command.

  496. He raises the winds to God's pleasure,

  497. to fulfill his will.

  498. And the storms are the servants of God,

  499. that obey his orders.

  500. That's the end of Gill's quote.

  501. God did that so that the ship threatened to break up.

  502. See that in verse 4?

  503. The ship threatened to break up.

  504. Another way of translating that from the Hebrew

  505. is to say that the ship expected itself to crack.

  506. It's personifying the ship.

  507. That the ship became a nervous wreck.

  508. So here we have children

  509. who were part of our discipleship toward baptism.

  510. Here we have again a picture of what?

  511. The waters of judgment.

  512. The waters of judgment and salvation

  513. through those waters of judgment.

  514. Just like the flood,

  515. just like the Red Sea

  516. that crushed Pharaoh and his army.

  517. Just like the disciples in the storm

  518. with Christ on the ship.

  519. You can't escape the presence of the Lord, Jonah.

  520. The Lord owns the seas.

  521. He hurls the winds

  522. to whichever part of the sea he wants.

  523. The Lord makes his presence undeniable.

  524. Now, it's salvation through judgment.

  525. God is getting Jonah's attention,

  526. but he's long-suffering toward Jonah,

  527. just like he's long-suffering toward Israel,

  528. in the same way that the Lord

  529. is long-suffering toward wicked Nineveh,

  530. and he's long-suffering toward you and me.

  531. So I read to you that context of Jeroboam II

  532. and 2 Kings 14.

  533. Just one chapter before,

  534. gives you a little bit more insight

  535. into what's going on in Israel at this time.

  536. This is that chapter right before Jonah,

  537. son of Amittai, is mentioned.

  538. We're told this,

  539. the Lord was gracious to them.

  540. Yes, wicked, idle-serving Israel.

  541. The Lord was gracious toward Israel

  542. and had compassion on them.

  543. And the Lord turned toward them

  544. who were rebelling against him

  545. because of his covenant

  546. with Abraham, with Isaac, with Jacob.

  547. His promise to send redemption,

  548. a covenant of grace

  549. through the seed of Abraham,

  550. the seed of Jacob,

  551. the seed of Eve.

  552. God would not destroy Israel,

  553. nor has he cast them out

  554. from his presence until now.

  555. 2 Kings 13 says,

  556. now look at verse 5,

  557. the mariners were afraid

  558. and each cried out to his God.

  559. There's another theme

  560. of the book of Jonah's fear.

  561. Right now they're afraid.

  562. Jonah says later,

  563. I fear the Lord.

  564. And they say they were exceedingly afraid.

  565. And in the Hebrew,

  566. the word afraid means afraid.

  567. The word fear means fear.

  568. He fears the Lord.

  569. That's exactly what it means.

  570. And they hurled their cargo

  571. just like God had hurled a storm

  572. at their ship.

  573. They hurled their cargo

  574. that was in the ship into the sea

  575. to lighten it for them.

  576. Listen to how Ezekiel 27, 25 describes.

  577. He says,

  578. the ships of Tarshish traveled for you,

  579. Israel,

  580. with your merchandise.

  581. So you were filled

  582. and heavily laden

  583. in the heart of the seas.

  584. Your rowers have brought you out

  585. into the high seas.

  586. The east wind wrecked you

  587. in the heart of the seas.

  588. The day of your fall.

  589. Israel,

  590. you want to put your hope

  591. in these surrounding nations?

  592. You want to put your hope

  593. in getting wealthy through trade

  594. and using Tarshish

  595. to export all your goods

  596. and bring back more

  597. and build your own little kingdom on earth?

  598. I will wreck your ships

  599. going to Tarshish,

  600. Ezekiel says,

  601. declaring the word of the Lord.

  602. We read that Jonah had gone down.

  603. There it is again.

  604. Jonah going down deeper and deeper

  605. into the,

  606. what part of the ship?

  607. The inner part of the ship.

  608. The insides.

  609. Yeah, like the ribs.

  610. The ribs of the ship.

  611. He's down in there,

  612. tucked in.

  613. And he laid down,

  614. went even further down.

  615. And he was fast asleep.

  616. This is a man who's been

  617. in the presence of the Lord.

  618. This is a man who has

  619. the word of God

  620. fast asleep.

  621. One pastor helped point this out.

  622. In the presence of the Lord,

  623. the trees clap.

  624. Isaiah 55, 12.

  625. In the presence of the Lord,

  626. the stones cry out.

  627. Luke 19, 40.

  628. Nahum 1, 5 says,

  629. the mountains quake before him.

  630. The hills melt.

  631. The earth heaves before him.

  632. The world and all who dwell in it

  633. in the presence of the Lord tremble.

  634. Psalm 93, 3 says,

  635. the floods have lifted up

  636. their roaring voice

  637. in the presence of the Lord.

  638. And the proud,

  639. religious,

  640. professional

  641. sleeps.

  642. Someone pointed out,

  643. Jonah is asleep

  644. in the midst of this storm.

  645. He's soundly asleep.

  646. One translation says,

  647. he snores.

  648. And he continues to snore

  649. and sleep.

  650. When he had such a guilty conscience,

  651. how could that be?

  652. And the conclusion

  653. this person at least made

  654. is that this shows

  655. Jonah was asleep

  656. in a spiritual sense

  657. as well as physically.

  658. So for those of us

  659. who have God's word,

  660. who have tasted

  661. and seen that the Lord is good,

  662. who have experienced

  663. the presence of the Lord

  664. by his word,

  665. we need to be

  666. extremely careful

  667. to not be like Jonah,

  668. to be like a religious,

  669. proud person

  670. who snores

  671. in the presence of God

  672. and his word.

  673. In verse 6,

  674. the captain came

  675. and said to him,

  676. what do you mean,

  677. you sleeper?

  678. Arise,

  679. cry out to your God.

  680. Perhaps God

  681. will give a thought to us

  682. that we may not perish.

  683. This pagan sailor,

  684. the captain,

  685. is preaching

  686. salvation through judgment

  687. and repentance

  688. to Jonah.

  689. Do you see the irony?

  690. Who is it here

  691. that's reflecting

  692. the heart of the creator God,

  693. desiring that none

  694. should perish,

  695. but that all should repent

  696. and respond to the Lord

  697. and worship him as king?

  698. The Lord is long-suffering

  699. toward Jonah,

  700. even in his pride,

  701. but he makes himself

  702. undeniable

  703. because Jonah

  704. cannot escape

  705. the presence of the Lord,

  706. even there

  707. in the ribs of the ship.

  708. I want to show you

  709. where else Jonah

  710. can't escape

  711. the presence of the Lord.

  712. Perceiving that the storm

  713. was not an ordinary storm,

  714. but a supernatural one,

  715. look at verse 7,

  716. they said to one another,

  717. these are the pagan sailors,

  718. come,

  719. let us cast lots

  720. that we may know

  721. on whose account

  722. this evil

  723. has come upon us.

  724. To cast lots

  725. could have been

  726. drawing straws,

  727. whoever gets the shortest

  728. straw is guilty,

  729. you know,

  730. any form of that,

  731. and it shows God's providence

  732. even using something

  733. like that

  734. in this ancient world.

  735. John Gill pointed out,

  736. in the ship,

  737. it seems,

  738. were men of different nations

  739. who worshipped

  740. different gods.

  741. Even in the uncertainty

  742. of pagan polytheism,

  743. in a time of trouble,

  744. God's image bearers

  745. still know

  746. the light of nature,

  747. don't they?

  748. Doesn't that remind you

  749. of Romans 1?

  750. Without the law,

  751. they do by nature

  752. the things contained

  753. in the law,

  754. showing the law

  755. written on their hearts,

  756. Paul wrote,

  757. in the light of nature.

  758. It's their conscience

  759. who bears witness

  760. to them

  761. what is right,

  762. what's the right way

  763. to respond.

  764. They know there is

  765. a creator God,

  766. but we need to pray

  767. to the creator God

  768. and call upon him

  769. for help.

  770. This was a time

  771. where in the ancient world

  772. they would have had

  773. a number of different gods,

  774. and even as God's people

  775. through the centuries,

  776. even as they're conquered

  777. next by,

  778. you know,

  779. by, you know,

  780. Assyria,

  781. and then eventually

  782. the Greeks,

  783. and then the Romans,

  784. this would have been

  785. so true.

  786. Why do you look

  787. to all the gods

  788. of the other nations?

  789. Is there a God

  790. you can call out to

  791. who will listen to you?

  792. For the Greeks,

  793. would it be Poseidon?

  794. Would it be the god

  795. of the seas?

  796. Would it be Zeus

  797. who can send storms?

  798. They're crying out

  799. to any pagan gods

  800. they can,

  801. and they're inviting

  802. Jonah to cry out,

  803. ask God to save.

  804. Now look at verse 8.

  805. Then they said to him,

  806. Tell us on whose account

  807. this evil has come upon us.

  808. What is your occupation?

  809. Where do you come from?

  810. What is your country?

  811. Of what people are you?

  812. Isn't it amazing how,

  813. even though this is

  814. in a very different setting

  815. than we live in today,

  816. it's so ancient,

  817. they're out at the sea,

  818. you know,

  819. in the middle of a storm

  820. in the Mediterranean.

  821. How do you get to know someone?

  822. It's the exact same questions.

  823. Where do you come from?

  824. What do you do?

  825. Who are your people?

  826. Tell us about you.

  827. We get to know you,

  828. your story.

  829. Maybe it's something

  830. you have done

  831. that has caused

  832. all of this for us.

  833. In verse 9,

  834. he said to them,

  835. See, Jonah the prophet

  836. is giving them the truth.

  837. He's revealing to these men

  838. in darkness

  839. the truth of God.

  840. It's just how we started

  841. our service.

  842. Our help is in the name

  843. of the Lord

  844. who made heavens

  845. and earth.

  846. Jonah tells them

  847. of the true God

  848. and look at their reaction.

  849. In verse 10,

  850. the men were then

  851. exceedingly afraid.

  852. So you have sinned

  853. against the God most high?

  854. Well, no wonder

  855. we're all going to die here.

  856. What is this you have done?

  857. He said.

  858. Well, the irony

  859. is set up for us here.

  860. Here's a man

  861. who has the word of God,

  862. who knows the presence of God,

  863. yet his behavior

  864. falls so far short

  865. of what his beliefs

  866. should produce.

  867. And here are these pagans.

  868. They live in darkness.

  869. They pray to all these

  870. false gods

  871. with a lowercase g,

  872. yet they're acting

  873. and speaking

  874. in a way that's way better,

  875. way more righteous,

  876. way more correct

  877. than their beliefs

  878. should produce.

  879. Do you see that same thing

  880. happening at work

  881. in your life?

  882. There are these people

  883. who don't know the Lord.

  884. They'll be the first one

  885. to say that,

  886. yet they seem

  887. to be acting

  888. in a way that's

  889. more pleasing to God.

  890. And I look at my own life

  891. or, you know,

  892. it's easy to point the finger

  893. at fellow Christians

  894. whose lives are so messed up,

  895. so much worse

  896. than their beliefs

  897. should make them.

  898. And we can go back

  899. to Genesis 1, 2, and 3

  900. and have the answer to this.

  901. The Bible teaches

  902. that all were made,

  903. Adam and Eve

  904. and all who come after them,

  905. made in the image of God.

  906. That's why pagan,

  907. sinners who don't know God

  908. still bear his image.

  909. They still have that

  910. common preserving grace,

  911. that law written

  912. on their hearts

  913. that they respond to

  914. because the Holy Spirit

  915. preserves them

  916. so they won't be nearly

  917. as sinful or destructive

  918. as they would be

  919. without that preserving grace

  920. of being made

  921. in God's image.

  922. So our doctrine

  923. of Imago Dei

  924. accounts for why

  925. those who don't know

  926. the Lord

  927. can act so good

  928. so much of the time.

  929. And then,

  930. once you're saved,

  931. we still have

  932. remaining sin.

  933. Paul wrestles with sin,

  934. Romans chapter 7,

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  935. until the last breath.

  936. All of us,

  937. even after Christ

  938. has made you righteous

  939. before God,

  940. we wrestle with

  941. remaining sin,

  942. which explains why

  943. we still,

  944. not making excuses for sin,

  945. but that's why

  946. it's still such a battle.

  947. And when we do fail

  948. in sin,

  949. our behavior

  950. and our words

  951. fall short

  952. of what our beliefs

  953. should produce.

  954. So Imago Dei

  955. and remaining sin.

  956. Those are the doctrines

  957. the Bible gives us

  958. that explain to us

  959. why we see that.

  960. Now the beautiful thing

  961. is the response to both

  962. is the same response

  963. that God wants of Nineveh

  964. and the same response

  965. God wants of Jonah.

  966. And that's this,

  967. that the presence

  968. of the Lord

  969. demands

  970. a right response.

  971. When the presence,

  972. the word of the Lord

  973. comes to you,

  974. it demands

  975. the right response.

  976. Look at verse 11.

  977. They said to him,

  978. what shall we do to you

  979. that the sea

  980. may quiet down

  981. for us?

  982. Clearly God

  983. has made his presence

  984. known even here

  985. in the dark depths

  986. of this scary storm.

  987. We must respond somehow.

  988. For the sea grew more

  989. and more tempestuous.

  990. Their false gods

  991. had no power.

  992. Their cargo

  993. and material things

  994. could not satisfy

  995. the wrath

  996. of the only true God,

  997. the creator.

  998. Look at verse 12.

  999. Jonah said to the sailors,

  1000. pick me up

  1001. and hurl me

  1002. into the sea.

  1003. Well now Jonah

1004. is about to go down

  1005. to the very roots

  1006. of the mountains.

  1007. He says,

  1008. then the sea

  1009. will quiet down

  1010. for you.

  1011. The presence

  1012. of the Lord

  1013. demands

  1014. the right response.

  1015. And sin,

  1016. the wages of sin

  1017. deserve death.

  1018. The Lord

  1019. demands

  1020. satisfaction.

  1021. Jonah says,

  1022. for I know

1023. it is because of me

  1024. that this great tempest

  1025. has come upon you.

  1026. Verse 13,

  1027. nevertheless the men

  1028. rode hard

  1029. to get back

  1030. to dry land.

  1031. Here's the pagan sailors

  1032. again doing all

  1033. within their power

  1034. that not even

  1035. Jonah should perish.

  1036. Surely there's got

  1037. to be another way

  1038. for all of us

  1039. to survive.

  1040. But they could not

  1041. for the sea grew

  1042. more and more

  1043. tempestuous

  1044. against them.

  1045. In verse 14,

  1046. therefore they

1047. called out to the Lord.

  1048. Listen to how

  1049. the pagan sailors

  1050. pray.

  1051. O Lord,

  1052. let us not perish

  1053. for this man's life.

  1054. Lord,

  1055. if you're the creator

  1056. of all,

  1057. you created life.

  1058. You don't want us

  1059. to die because

  1060. of this man's sin.

  1061. But listen to their

  1062. compassion as well.

  1063. Lay not on us

  1064. innocent blood

  1065. for you,

  1066. O Lord,

  1067. have done

  1068. as it pleased you.

1069. And if it pleases you,

  1070. Lord,

  1071. that we throw Jonah

  1072. into this sea,

  1073. don't hold us

  1074. guilty for killing

  1075. this man.

  1076. We're doing this

  1077. to satisfy you,

  1078. what pleases you.

  1079. They understood

  1080. that the holy

  1081. presence of God

  1082. will be undeniable.

  1083. It requires

  1084. satisfaction

  1085. and it requires

  1086. the right response

  1087. from everyone.

  1088. Verse 15,

  1089. so they picked up

  1090. Jonah and hurled

  1091. him into the sea.

  1092. The thought here

  1093. is it's really

  1094. similar to

  1095. John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  1096. that we saw.

  1097. 1150,

  1098. remember how

  1099. the high priest

  1100. prophesied

  1101. without even knowing.

  1102. He said,

  1103. it's better

  1104. that one man die

  1105. than that all

  1106. should perish.

  1107. The presence

  1108. of the Lord

  1109. demands

  1110. satisfaction.

  1111. And when they

  1112. hurled Jonah

  1113. into the sea,

  1114. the sea,

  1115. what's the next

  1116. word you see

  1117. there?

  1118. The sea

  1119. ceased.

  1120. That's the same

  1121. word used

  1122. in Genesis

    Genesis 8:1

  1123. chapter 8

  1124. verse 1,

  1125. the waters

  1126. of the flood

  1127. ceased,

  1128. subsided.

  1129. It's the same

  1130. word used

  1131. in Exodus

    Exodus 9:33

  1132. chapter 9

  1133. verse 33,

  1134. when the Lord

  1135. sent a storm

  1136. with thunder

  1137. and hail

  1138. as a plague

  1139. over the Egyptians,

  1140. then the Lord

  1141. made it to cease

  1142. from its raging.

  1143. Each step

  1144. that Jonah

  1145. takes going down

  1146. further and

  1147. further and

  1148. further away

  1149. from the holy

  1150. presence of the

  1151. Lord is a step

  1152. toward death.

  1153. And the wages

  1154. of sin is death.

  1155. And when Jonah

  1156. is hurled into

  1157. the sea,

  1158. the very picture

  1159. of the waters

  1160. of judgment,

  1161. the wrath of God

  1162. against sin,

  1163. the Lord

  1164. is satisfied.

  1165. Sin has been

  1166. punished.

  1167. The waters

  1168. ceased.

  1169. In verse 16,

  1170. then the men,

  1171. these pagan sailors,

  1172. what's their

  1173. reaction now?

  1174. They feared

  1175. the Lord

  1176. exceedingly.

  1177. And they

  1178. offered a sacrifice

  1179. to the Lord

  1180. and made vows.

  1181. See,

  1182. first the sailors

  1183. experienced the storm

  1184. of God's judgment,

  1185. then through God's

  1186. judgment of Jonah,

  1187. the sailors

  1188. experienced their

  1189. salvation.

  1190. See the beauty

  1191. of God's word?

  1192. Is that the end

  1193. of it for Jonah?

  1194. Well, no.

  1195. We're not going to

  1196. spend much time

  1197. on verse 17,

  1198. but I did want

  1199. to end with this.

  1200. The Lord

  1201. had appointed,

  1202. had prepared

  1203. in His providence

  1204. a great fish

  1205. to swallow Jonah.

  1206. And Jonah was

  1207. in the belly

  1208. of the fish

  1209. three days

  1210. and three nights

  1211. and he does

  1212. not die there.

  1213. Jonah experienced

  1214. the storm

  1215. of God's judgment

  1216. as well.

  1217. And then,

  1218. through God's judgment,

  1219. Jonah experienced

  1220. salvation,

  1221. which God

  1222. had providentially

  1223. prepared.

  1224. He had tried

  1225. to flee from God

  1226. by hiding

  1227. in the ribs

  1228. of the ship.

  1229. God in His providence

  1230. took him down

  1231. to the very pit,

1232. the depths of the ocean,

  1233. and hid Jonah away

  1234. in the ribs

  1235. of a great fish

  1236. to show his

  1237. long-suffering patience.

  1238. And Jonah,

  1239. even there,

  1240. you can't hide

  1241. from the presence

  1242. of the Lord.

  1243. And the Lord

  1244. is saving you.

  1245. He is saving you

1246. and He will use you

  1247. for His purposes.

  1248. I want to apply

  1249. this now to us

  1250. if I can.

  1251. So we saw

  1252. how the proud,

  1253. like Jonah,

  1254. like Adam,

  1255. the proud want

  1256. to escape

  1257. the presence

  1258. of the Lord.

  1259. But the Lord,

  1260. He's the one

  1261. who draws

  1262. repenting sinners

  1263. into His

  1264. holy presence.

  1265. The Bible says

  1266. that even when

  1267. you and I die,

  1268. you can't escape

  1269. the omnipresent Lord,

  1270. the Lion of Judah,

  1271. the Lamb of Heaven.

  1272. You can't escape

  1273. the holy presence

  1274. of God.

  1275. Revelation 14,

    Revelation 14:9

  1276. verse 9,

  1277. those who proudly

  1278. refuse the Lord Jesus

  1279. will be tormented

  1280. with fire and sulfur.

  1281. Where?

  1282. In the presence

  1283. of the angels,

  1284. in the presence

  1285. of the Lamb.

  1286. You can't escape

  1287. the presence

  1288. of the Lord.

  1289. And the Lord

  1290. draws sinners

  1291. into His holy presence

  1292. so that you will

  1293. respond rightly to Him.

  1294. I see a powerful

  1295. connection between

  1296. Jonah in the

  1297. old covenant

  1298. and Peter

  1299. in the new covenant.

  1300. You could say

  1301. Peter is a

  1302. new covenant

  1303. Jonah.

  1304. Do you remember

  1305. even after Peter

  1306. was saved

  1307. and the Lord,

  1308. the Holy Spirit

  1309. is teaching the church

1310. how to be the new

  1311. kingdom of God

  1312. on earth now?

  1313. And Peter

  1314. is slow

  1315. to want to

  1316. release the regulations

  1317. upon Gentiles.

  1318. Gentiles.

  1319. So you could say

  1320. even in the beginning

  1321. of his ministry

  1322. Peter was a proud

  1323. nationalist

  1324. like Jonah.

  1325. But then the

  1326. Word of God,

  1327. the presence

  1328. of the Lord,

  1329. the Spirit

  1330. with His church

  1331. transforms Peter.

  1332. Now here's a cool

  1333. connection.

  1334. Listen to this.

  1335. Remember how Jonah

  1336. traveled from

  1337. Joppa?

  1338. He was traveling

  1339. away so that

  1340. those Gentiles,

  1341. those Ninevites

  1342. would not hear

  1343. God's Word?

  1344. Listen to

  1345. Acts 10,

    Acts 10:32

  1346. verse 32.

  1347. Peter travels

  1348. from Joppa

  1349. so that the Gentiles

  1350. will hear

  1351. God's Word.

  1352. Cornelius,

  1353. the Greek,

  1354. he says,

  1355. send therefore

  1356. to Joppa

  1357. and ask Peter

  1358. by the sea.

  1359. And when Peter

  1360. got there,

  1361. Cornelius says,

  1362. you have been

  1363. kind enough

  1364. to come.

  1365. Now therefore,

  1366. listen to what

  1367. he says next,

  1368. we are all here

  1369. in the presence

  1370. of God.

  1371. To hear all

  1372. that you have

  1373. been commanded

  1374. by the Lord,

  1375. give us God's Word.

  1376. We are in His

  1377. presence.

  1378. Yes,

  1379. Gentiles,

  1380. hearing from

  1381. a prophet,

  1382. a man of God,

  1383. traveled from

  1384. Joppa so we

  1385. could receive

  1386. the Word of God.

  1387. We are in the

  1388. presence of God.

  1389. Give us His Word.

  1390. That's what

  1391. Cornelius says.

  1392. So Peter says,

  1393. and this is

  1394. Acts 10,

    Acts 10:34

  1395. verse 34,

  1396. truly,

  1397. I understand

  1398. that God

  1399. shows no

  1400. partiality.

  1401. But in every

  1402. nation,

  1403. anyone who

  1404. fears Him

  1405. and does what

  1406. is right

  1407. and acceptable

  1408. to Him,

  1409. that's why

  1410. we are preaching

  1411. the good news

  1412. of peace

  1413. through Jesus

  1414. Christ,

  1415. Lord of all.

  1416. If you respond

  1417. rightly,

  1418. the waters of

  1419. judgment cease.

  1420. It's Jesus Christ,

  1421. the one who God

  1422. providentially prepared,

  1423. and He would bring

  1424. salvation through

  1425. judgment.

  1426. Jesus Christ bore

  1427. the wrath of the

  1428. Holy God on the

  1429. cross,

  1430. so that all

  1431. who would be

  1432. in Him,

  1433. the one who He

  1434. provided for

  1435. your salvation,

  1436. if you respond

  1437. rightly,

  1438. you are saved.

  1439. You have peace

  1440. with God

  1441. through Jesus

  1442. Christ.

  1443. And listen to

  1444. what Peter wrote

  1445. to the churches

  1446. in 2 Peter 3,

  1447. 9.

  1448. The Lord is not

  1449. slow to fulfill

  1450. His promise.

  1451. He draws

  1452. sinners into

  1453. His presence.

  1454. Peter says,

  1455. He's not slow

  1456. to fulfill

  1457. His promise.

  1458. The Lord is

  1459. long-suffering

  1460. toward you.

  1461. desiring

  1462. that you

  1463. repent,

  1464. not desiring

  1465. that any

  1466. should perish.

  1467. Peter got it.

  1468. He's a new

  1469. covenant Jonah.

  1470. When you see

  1471. God's loving

  1472. kindness

  1473. toward you,

  1474. His patience,

  1475. you repent.

  1476. You respond

  1477. to Him.

  1478. My prayer

  1479. for you all

  1480. along has

  1481. been this.

  1482. Not only

  1483. that you

  1484. would understand

  1485. that you

  1486. can't escape

  1487. the presence

  1488. of the Lord,

  1489. but that you

  1490. would not

  1491. want to

  1492. leave

  1493. the presence

  1494. of the Lord.

  1495. That you

  1496. would not

  1497. want to

  1498. escape it.

  1499. When you

  1500. have the

  1501. presence

  1502. of the Lord,

  1503. the word

  1504. of the Lord

  1505. with the

  1506. people of

  1507. God,

  1508. that you

  1509. would want

  1510. to stay

  1511. there.

  1512. Not leave

  1513. that.

  1514. Romans 13,

  1515. 11 says,

  1516. You know

  1517. the hour

  1518. has come

  1519. for you

  1520. who were

  1521. asleep.

  1522. Just like

  1523. Jonah asleep,

  1524. trying to

  1525. escape God.

  1526. You who

  1527. were asleep,

  1528. the hour

  1529. has come,

  1530. for salvation

  1531. is nearer

  1532. to us

  1533. now than

  1534. when we

  1535. first believed.

  1536. You don't

  1537. want to

  1538. escape the

  1539. holy presence

  1540. of the

  1541. Lord,

  1542. because the

  1543. Lord is so

  1544. long-suffering

  1545. and patient

  1546. toward you,

  1547. desiring that

  1548. you not

  1549. perish.

  1550. He will

  1551. keep coming

  1552. after you.

  1553. He will

  1554. make himself

  1555. undeniable

  1556. in your

  1557. life.

  1558. Now listen

  1559. to this

  1560. sermon,

  1561. how Peter

  1562. preached this,

  1563. a saved

  1564. sinner,

  1565. this new

  1566. covenant,

  1567. Jonah,

  1568. who's been

  1569. transformed by

  1570. the cross and

  1571. by the Holy

  1572. Spirit.

  1573. This is how

  1574. you need to

  1575. respond.

  1576. How do you

  1577. have peace

  1578. with God?

  1579. Well,

  1580. Peter preaches

  1581. in Acts

    Acts 3:19

  1582. chapter 3

  1583. verse 19,

  1584. in light of

  1585. everything you've

  1586. heard,

  1587. repent,

  1588. therefore,

  1589. turn back,

  1590. that your sins

  1591. may be blotted

  1592. out,

  1593. listen to this,

  1594. that times of

  1595. refreshing may

  1596. come from

  1597. where?

  1598. From the

  1599. presence of

  1600. the Lord,

  1601. and that he

  1602. may send

  1603. Christ who he

  1604. appointed for

  1605. you,

  1606. just like he

  1607. appointed a

  1608. fish to

  1609. save,

  1610. Jonah.

  1611. He appointed

  1612. his own

  1613. son for

  1614. you,

  1615. whom heaven

  1616. must receive

  1617. until the

  1618. time for

  1619. restoring all

  1620. things about

  1621. which God

  1622. spoke by the

  1623. mouth of his

  1624. holy prophets,

  1625. even that

  1626. proud Jonah.

  1627. Do you want

  1628. to be in the

  1629. presence of

  1630. the Lord?

  1631. Do you want

  1632. to stay there

  1633. with him and

  1634. find refreshing,

  1635. then repent,

  1636. turn back,

  1637. abide with

  1638. God through

  1639. Jesus Christ.

  1640. Peter could

  1641. now sing by

  1642. the work of

  1643. the Holy

  1644. Spirit,

  1645. Psalm 16

    Psalms 16:11

  1646. verse 11,

  1647. with a

  1648. newfound joy.

  1649. The Psalm

  1650. says,

  1651. you, O

  1652. Lord, you

  1653. make known

  1654. to me the

  1655. path of

  1656. life.

  1657. In your

  1658. presence there

  1659. is fullness

  1660. of joy.

  1661. and at

  1662. your right

  1663. hand,

  1664. right there

  1665. with you

  1666. by your

  1667. side,

  1668. are pleasures

  1669. forevermore.

  1670. You don't

  1671. want to leave

  1672. the glorious

  1673. presence of

  1674. the Lord.

  1675. As a

  1676. closing prayer

  1677. and response,

  1678. I simply want

  1679. to read for us

  1680. as a prayer,

  1681. my prayer for

  1682. you, for

  1683. myself, and

  1684. I hope you'll

  1685. join me in

  1686. praying these

  1687. words as you

  1688. hear them.

  1689. Psalm 139

    Psalms 139:1–12

  1690. verses 1

  1691. through 12.

  1692. O Lord,

  1693. you have

  1694. searched me

  1695. and known

  1696. me.

  1697. You know

  1698. when I sit

  1699. down and

  1700. when I rise

  1701. up.

  1702. You discern

  1703. my thoughts

  1704. from afar.

  1705. You search

  1706. out my path

  1707. and my lying

  1708. down and

  1709. are acquainted

  1710. with all

  1711. of my ways.

  1712. Even before

  1713. a word is

  1714. on my tongue,

  1715. behold, O

  1716. Lord, you

  1717. know it

  1718. altogether.

  1719. You hem

  1720. me in

  1721. behind and

  1722. before,

  1723. and you

  1724. lay your

  1725. hand upon

  1726. me.

  1727. Such knowledge

  1728. is too

  1729. wonderful for

  1730. me.

  1731. It is high.

  1732. I cannot

  1733. attain it.

  1734. Where shall

  1735. I go from

  1736. your spirit?

  1737. Or where

  1738. shall I flee

  1739. from your

  1740. presence?

  1741. If I ascend

  1742. to heaven,

  1743. you are there.

  1744. If I make

  1745. my bed in

  1746. Sheol,

  1747. you are there.

  1748. If I take

  1749. the wings of

  1750. the morning

  1751. and dwell in

  1752. the uttermost

  1753. parts of

  1754. the sea,

  1755. even there

  1756. your hand

  1757. shall lead

  1758. me,

  1759. and your

  1760. right hand

  1761. shall hold

  1762. me.

  1763. If I say

  1764. surely the

  1765. darkness shall

  1766. cover me,

  1767. and the light

  1768. about me

  1769. shall be dark,

  1770. even the

  1771. darkness is not

  1772. dark to you.

  1773. The night

  1774. is as bright

  1775. as the day,

  1776. for darkness

  1777. is as light

  1778. with you.

  1779. egen
