  1. While you're finding your spot in Jonah, I'll just explain a little bit of how we're preaching through these books.

  2. So we've been going through the gospel according to John, the fourth gospel.

  3. We've paused that now as we go into the summer months.

  4. I'm really excited to preach through the Psalms.

  5. So the plan is that every Sunday of the summer we'll tackle one psalm.

  6. So next week we'll begin that with Psalm chapter 1, if you want to read that and study it this week.

    Psalms 1 chapter mention

  7. And then we've been going to one Old Testament book about once a month.

  8. We're halfway through Jonah after today.

  9. And we'll resume Jonah again in the fall, you know, with the book of John again.

  10. But we'll pause and look at Psalms.

  11. So we're going to start our reading a couple of verses before Jonah chapter 2.

    Jonah 2 chapter mention

  12. And we'll end it a couple of verses after the end of chapter 2 as well.

  13. So turn back now to Jonah chapter 1, starting at verse 14.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  14. As I read from the book of Jonah, and as you follow along, remember this is God's inspired,

  15. inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  16. This is God's very own word for you, his people.

  17. After we're done reading our sermon text for today, I'll say this is the word of the Lord,

  18. and we'll respond, thanks be to God.

  19. So Jonah chapter 1, starting at verse 14.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  20. Therefore they, this is the pagan sailors, called out to the Lord,

  21. O Lord, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not on us innocent blood.

  22. For you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.

  23. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from raging.

  24. Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

  25. The Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah.

  26. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

  27. Now notice what Jonah chapter 2 is.

    Jonah 2 chapter mention

  28. What is it?

  29. It's his prayer.

  30. All of chapter 2 is Jonah's prayer.

  31. So Jonah chapter 2, verse 1.

    Jonah 2:1

  32. Then Jonah prayed to the Lord, his God, from the belly of the fish, saying,

  33. I called out to the Lord out of my distress, and he answered me.

  34. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice.

  35. For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me.

  36. All your waves and billows passed over me.

  37. Then I said, I am driven away from your sight.

  38. Yet I shall again look upon your holy temple.

  39. The waters closed in over me to take my life.

  40. The deep surrounded me.

  41. Weeds were wrapped around my head at the roots of the mountains.

  42. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever.

  43. Yet you brought up my life from the pit.

  44. Oh, Lord, my God.

  45. When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you into your holy temple.

  46. Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love.

  47. But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you.

  48. While I have vowed, I will pay, salvation belongs to the Lord.

  49. Isn't that a great prayer?

  50. Then we're told, the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah up, out upon dry land.

  51. We'll read the first four verses of chapter three to see what happens.

  52. Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying,

  53. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.

  54. So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord.

  55. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days' journey in breadth.

  56. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey, and he called out,

  57. Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

  58. This is the word of the Lord.

  59. Thanks be to God.

  60. You may be seated.

  61. Would you pray with me?

  62. Oh Lord, teach us to hope in you.

  63. Without hope we perish.

  64. When we put our hope on anything less, we are disappointed.

  65. Help us to put our hope in you alone, and hear from you through your word,

  66. to strengthen our hope once again today for your glory.

  67. For Christ's sake we pray.

  68. Amen.

  69. Amen.

  70. Let me read this quote.

  71. This is from J.C. Ryle in the 1800s in Liverpool, England, to his congregation at the time.

  72. Quote,

  73. I have a question to offer you.

  74. It is contained in three words.

  75. Do you pray?

  76. This question is one that none but you can answer.

  77. Do you pray?

  78. There is no duty in religion so neglected as prayer.

  79. I ask whether you pray because prayer is absolutely needful to a man's salvation.

  80. I cannot find that without prayer anybody will be saved.

  81. No man or woman can expect to be saved who does not pray.

  82. Do you pray?

  83. Ryle goes on to argue that without prayer, not only can you not be saved without prayer, you cannot grow.

  84. He writes,

  85. Diligence in prayer is vital for growth in holiness.

  86. There is a vast difference among true Christians.

  87. All Christians are in God's army.

  88. They are all fighting the same good fight,

  89. but how much more valiantly some fight than others.

  90. They are all doing the Lord's work,

  91. but how much more some do than others.

  92. They are all running the same race,

  93. but how much faster some get on than others.

  94. They all love the same Lord and Savior,

  95. but how much more some love Him than others.

  96. Ryle asks,

  97. What accounts for such a difference among true Christians?

  98. And his answer,

  99. prayer.

  100. Do you pray?

  101. Only Christians that pray,

  102. and keep praying through adversity,

  103. will be saved,

  104. and will grow.

  105. Now, you remember in Jonah chapter 1,

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  106. I know it was a while back,

  107. but do you remember where Jonah was?

  108. He was fleeing from the Lord.

  109. He was going to the belly or the ribs of the ship,

  110. and he was asleep.

  111. And Jonah was,

  112. he was like an illustration of the state,

  113. the spiritual state of all of Israel.

  114. The waters are raging all around this little ship,

  115. and there is Jonah.

  116. He's not praying.

  117. He's escaping,

  118. and he's trying to escape into slumber.

  119. He's escaping God.

  120. He's not a man of prayer.

  121. God's people in Israel,

  122. they had turned to these vain idols.

  123. Look at our sermon text for today,

  124. chapter 2, verse 8.

  125. Those who pay regard to vain idols,

  126. they forsake their hope of steadfast love.

  127. You're going to throw your prayers toward an idol.

  128. You are going to have no hope.

  129. Now, in chapter 2,

  130. God teaches this man who flees God and who does not pray,

  131. He teaches this man to pray.

  132. That's what happens in chapter 2.

  133. Jonah learns to pray.

  134. Look at chapter 2, verse 2.

  135. Jonah says,

  136. I cried out in my affliction unto the Lord,

  137. and He heard me.

  138. I love how the Geneva Bible of 1599 puts it.

  139. Out of the belly of hell,

  140. I cried out,

  141. and you heard my voice.

  142. Here's my proposition for you today

  143. from Jonah chapter 2.

    Jonah 2 chapter mention

  144. Distress.

  145. Distress drives you to see God's character more clearly.

  146. When you see God's character more clearly,

  147. you cry out to Him.

  148. You pray.

  149. Pray.

  150. And He restores your hope.

  151. When you're trying to remember what was this sermon about,

  152. what was the point?

  153. The point is,

  154. do you pray?

  155. In your distress,

  156. do you see the character of God?

  157. And by seeing His character,

  158. your hope in praying to this God

  159. is restored.

  160. It puts you on your knees

  161. to pray.

  162. And in this passage that we read today,

  163. I want to walk us through eight reasons

  164. that we can pray with hope in God's character.

  165. Reason number one,

  166. pray with hope in God's justice.

  167. We learned this from those pagan sailors.

  168. The sailors,

  169. they appeal to God in their prayer.

  170. They appeal to God's justice.

  171. Look at chapter 1, verse 14.

  172. Those pagan sailors cried unto the Lord,

  173. and they said,

  174. We beseech Thee, O Lord,

  175. we beseech Thee.

  176. Let us not perish for this man's life.

  177. So they're looking at Jonah,

  178. and the storm is raging all around.

  179. They say,

  180. If this man is guilty,

  181. well,

  182. it would be unjust of you to punish us.

  183. He's the guilty one.

  184. But then they see the other side of it.

  185. They say,

  186. Lay not upon us innocent blood.

  187. Now what if Jonah's innocent,

  188. and we're going to cast him over the seas?

  189. Don't hold us now,

  190. you know,

  191. guilty for killing an innocent man.

  192. Either way,

  193. God is just,

  194. and we're praying to you, God,

  195. in your justice,

  196. do the right thing.

  197. We don't know.

  198. Only you know the heart of man.

  199. So we beseech Thee,

  200. we pray to you

  201. to show your justice now

  202. and not kill us

  203. over this wicked man, Jonah.

  204. They confess,

  205. You have done as it pleased you.

  206. In chapter 1, verse 15,

  207. they took Jonah,

  208. they grabbed him,

  209. lifted him up,

  210. and they cast him forth

  211. into the sea.

  212. Now notice the justice of God

  213. being satisfied.

  214. What happens in chapter 1, verse 15?

  215. The sea ceased from her raging.

  216. The sea ceased from her raging

  217. as wicked Jonah's body

  218. splashes into the ocean.

  219. The wrath of God is satisfied.

  220. His justice is appeased.

  221. Then, verse 16,

  222. the men feared the Lord exceedingly

  223. and offered a sacrifice unto the Lord

  224. and made vows.

  225. These pagan sailors learned,

  226. we can pray to this God

  227. and we can appeal to Him

  228. because He truly is just.

  229. He could have wiped us out.

  230. Instead, He was satisfied.

  231. His justice was satisfied

  232. by taking Jonah

  233. and sparing us.

  234. They prayed to Him

  235. with hope in God's justice.

  236. The Bible talks of God's justice

  237. in every book.

  238. Here's one example.

  239. Deuteronomy 23, verse 4.

    Deuteronomy 23:4

  240. He, the same Lord and God,

  241. He is the rock.

  242. His work is perfect

  243. for all His ways are just.

  244. A God of truth

  245. and without iniquity,

  246. just and right is He.

  247. When you think of God,

  248. think of His justice.

  249. Our distress,

  250. like these sailors,

  251. it drives us to see more clearly

  252. God's true character.

  253. And when we see God's character,

  254. we cry out to Him.

  255. We appeal to His character

  256. like they appeal to His justice.

  257. And God restores our hope to pray.

  258. So in your distress,

  259. cry out to the Lord

  260. and pray knowing that He will hear you.

  261. Remember God's character

  262. and pray with hope in His justice.

  263. Jeremy read for us Psalm 33,

    Psalms 33:22

  264. verse 22 of which says,

  265. Let Your steadfast love, O Lord,

  266. Your character,

  267. Your otherworldly love

  268. be upon us

  269. even as we hope in You.

  270. Do you pray?

  271. Pray with hope in God's justice.

  272. Do you pray?

  273. Number two,

  274. pray with hope in God's providence.

  275. Pray with hope in God's providence.

  276. Look at chapter 1, verse 17.

  277. Now the Lord had prepared,

  278. the Lord had appointed,

  279. the Lord had provided

  280. a great fish to swallow up Jonah.

  281. It was God's providence

  282. to spare Jonah using this great fish.

  283. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish

  284. three days and three nights.

  285. It was God's providence

  286. to preserve Jonah in the belly of hell

  287. for three days and three nights.

  288. Not one day more,

  289. not one day less.

  290. Jonah chapter 2, verse 1.

    Jonah 2:1

  291. Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God

  292. out of the fish's belly.

  293. He says,

  294. I cried out in my affliction,

  295. in my distress,

  296. I cried out unto the Lord,

  297. and he heard me.

  298. He heard me out of the belly of hell

  299. as I cried.

  300. You, O Lord, have heard my voice.

  301. In distress,

  302. Jonah saw God's providence.

  303. Try to put yourself in Jonah's skin.

  304. These pagan sailors lift you up,

  305. bring you to the very edge.

  306. The foam, the wind,

  307. the vapor of the sea,

  308. they throw you in.

  309. And then you go down.

  310. You splash.

  311. And you think,

  312. this is my death.

  313. And I'm glad for it to all be over.

  314. He was so miserable,

  315. trying to hide from the Lord God,

  316. the inescapable God.

  317. And as he's dying,

  318. suffocating,

  319. salt,

  320. salty water in his nostrils,

  321. thinking this is the end for sure.

  322. The Lord prepared.

  323. The Lord appointed.

  324. The Lord provided

  325. for this great fish to swallow him.

  326. So he goes brushing past the teeth

  327. and the inner parts of the mouth

  328. of this great fish.

  329. When he thought his last

  330. times to intake something

  331. through his nose and mouth,

  332. when he thought it was going to be salt water,

  333. he finds himself now having something to breathe.

  334. Somehow getting oxygen now

  335. preserved inside the stomach

  336. of this great fish.

  337. And it's the most miserable picture

  338. of a man we can imagine.

  339. He's sitting in

  340. what would feel like vomit

  341. and decaying fish bits

  342. and seaweed

  343. and stomach acid.

  344. Turning all of the hairs on his body white.

  345. That's why he describes this

  346. as the belly of hell.

  347. And he thinks he's going to die.

  348. This is the end.

  349. But notice what he does.

  350. From that pit,

  351. he cries out to the Lord.

  352. Because he sees,

  353. I could have died in the ocean.

  354. But God provided for me.

  355. He's providing oxygen for me to breathe.

  356. Think about that.

  357. Even to cry out to God,

  358. it takes having some air in his lungs.

  359. There's no air in the bottom of the ocean.

  360. Even the air for him to cry out

  361. was provided for him by God

  362. inside this great fish

  363. that the Lord appointed

  364. to preserve Jonah.

  365. Our Orthodox catechism asks this question,

  366. what do you understand by providence?

  367. And the answer is this,

  368. providence is the almighty

  369. and ever-present power of God

  370. by which he upholds

  371. as with his hand,

  372. heaven and earth and all creatures.

  373. And so rules them

  374. that leaf and blade,

  375. rain and drought,

  376. fruitful and lean years,

  377. food and drink,

  378. health and sickness,

  379. prosperity and poverty.

  380. All things, in fact,

  381. come to us,

  382. not by chance,

  383. but from his fatherly hand.

  384. By his providence,

  385. Jonah cries out to God.

  386. God.

  387. God gets our attention in distress.

  388. And God makes you,

  389. he shakes you and says,

  390. are you a believer or not?

  391. What assurance do you have in your life

  392. to claim to be a true believer?

  393. I don't see a lot of evidence

  394. in Jonah's life

  395. of whether or not he was a believer

  396. up to this point in the story.

  397. Do you?

  398. Do you think Jonah was a believer?

  399. Well,

  400. there's one thing Jonah does

  401. is he prays.

  402. He prays.

  403. He cries out to the Lord.

  404. Notice how J.C. Ryle

  405. makes this connection.

  406. Practice of prayer

  407. is one of the surest marks

  408. of a true Christian.

  409. Just as the first sign

  410. of the life of an infant

  411. when born into this world

  412. is the act of breathing,

  413. so the first act of men and women

  414. when they are born again

  415. is praying.

  416. God teaches Jonah to pray.

  417. And if he's praying

  418. in this time of distress,

  419. that can be a comfort to him

  420. that God hears him

  421. and that God saves.

  422. Distress drives you to see

  423. the character of God more clearly.

  424. Jonah would never have gotten

  425. to see God's providence

  426. to this extreme

  427. if it weren't for this distress

  428. that the Lord threw him into.

  429. And when you see God's character,

  430. you cry out to him

  431. because his character,

  432. his providence,

  433. restores your hope

  434. to pray.

  435. In your distress,

  436. do like Jonah.

  437. No matter how bad

  438. your situation is,

  439. it cannot be worse than his.

  440. You do like him

  441. and you cry out

  442. to the Lord

  443. and you pray.

  444. And you pray knowing

  445. that he will hear you.

  446. Not because of your merit,

  447. but because of God's character.

  448. And you pray with hope

  449. in who God is.

  450. And we can pray,

  451. Lord,

  452. let not your steadfast love

  453. forsake us.

  454. Be upon us once again,

  455. Lord,

  456. with your steadfast love,

  457. even as we hope in you.

  458. So you pray with hope

  459. in God's providence.

  460. Do you pray?

  461. Do you pray?

  462. Pray.

  463. Number three,

  464. pray with hope

  465. in God's sovereignty.

  466. Sovereignty means

  467. that nothing happens

  468. except through God

  469. and by his will.

  470. Not only does he use

  471. secondary means

  472. and provide for you that way,

  473. that's his providence.

  474. It was his will

  475. to use those means

  476. over you.

  477. Look at verse three,

  478. chapter two,

  479. verse three.

  480. For you

  481. have cast me

  482. into the deep.

  483. Who was it

  484. that cast Jonah

  485. into the deep?

  486. It was God,

  487. the sovereign God,

  488. the creator,

  489. Lord of all.

  490. In the midst of the seas

  491. and the floods

  492. that encompass me about,

  493. I'm going to read this

  494. in the King James,

  495. all thy billows

  496. and thy waves

  497. passed over me.

  498. Whose billows were they?

  499. Thine.

  500. Whose waves

  501. passed over Jonah?

  502. God's waves.

  503. It was God's decree

  504. for Jonah's life

  505. that these

  506. undulating

  507. masses of water

  508. would bury him.

  509. And it was God's will

  510. that these waves

  511. would pile on,

  512. pushing him

  513. lower and lower

  514. and lower.

  515. That was God's decree

  516. for Jonah.

  517. God was teaching Jonah

  518. a high view

  519. of God's sovereignty.

  520. Second London Confession

  521. of 1689

  522. states it this way,

  523. what the Bible teaches,

  524. that God

  525. has decreed

  526. in himself

  527. from all eternity

  528. by the most wise

  529. and holy counsel

  530. of his own will,

  531. freely

  532. and unchangeably

  533. all things

  534. whatsoever

  535. come to pass.

  536. All Christians

  537. go through distress

  538. in this life

  539. by God's decree,

  540. by God's sovereign will.

  541. But only Christians

  542. who pray,

  543. who cry out to God

  544. from that distress

  545. will grow from it.

  546. We sing this truth

  547. from an orthodox catechism.

  548. What is your only hope

  549. in life and in death?

  550. And the answer is

  551. that I am not my own,

  552. but I belong

  553. body and soul

  554. to my faithful Savior

  555. Jesus Christ.

  556. He has fully paid

  557. for all my sins

  558. with his precious blood

  559. and has set me free

  560. from the tyranny

  561. of the devil.

  562. Listen to God's sovereignty.

  563. He watches over me

  564. in such a way

  565. that not a hair,

  566. not even a white

  567. stomach acid dyed hair

  568. can fall from Jonah's head

  569. without the will

  570. of the Father in heaven.

  571. And he cares for you

  572. as his child.

  573. And he puts his Holy Spirit

  574. in you

  575. to assure you

  576. of eternal life.

  577. And that Holy Spirit

  578. makes you willing

  579. and ready

  580. wholeheartedly

  581. from now on

  582. to live for him.

  583. Notice how it's

  584. the sovereignty of God

  585. that drove Jonah

  586. to that pit of hell

  587. and it's the sovereignty

  588. of God

  589. that will restore him

  590. and make him willing

  591. and ready

  592. from now on

  593. to live for God.

  594. That's a high view

  595. of God's sovereignty.

  596. Our distress,

  597. it makes us run empty.

  598. We see we got nothing.

  599. We turn to the sovereign God.

  600. Our distress makes us

  601. cry out to God

  602. and pray with hope

  603. in his character.

  604. He is a God

  605. who is sovereign.

  606. We remember his character

  607. and we pray with confidence

  608. in who he is.

  609. And we ask,

  610. let your steadfast love,

  611. O sovereign Lord,

  612. be upon us

  613. even as we hope in you.

  614. Do you pray

  615. to this sovereign God?

  616. Do you pray?

  617. Number four,

  618. pray with hope

  619. in God's grace.

  620. Yes, God is just.

  621. God is sovereign.

  622. God is showing

  623. his providence

  624. to his children,

  625. but God is a God

  626. of grace

  627. through it all.

  628. Look at verse four.

  629. Chapter two, verse four.

  630. From the mouth of Jonah,

  631. then I said,

  632. I am cast out

  633. of thy sight.

  634. Jonah is saying,

  635. from the belly of hell,

  636. I could not be further

  637. from your will.

  638. I am a rebel.

  639. I deserve the banishment

  640. I got.

  641. Yet,

  642. yet,

  643. I will look again

  644. toward thy holy temple.

  645. Jonah is learning

  646. God's grace.

  647. In the face of death,

  648. the only place

  649. I want to think of again,

  650. Jonah says,

  651. is your presence,

  652. your holy temple,

  653. the meeting point

  654. between the holy God

  655. and sinners on earth.

  656. That's all I want

  657. to think about.

  658. I want to be at the temple

  659. and I want to see

  660. the high priest

  661. on behalf of all the people,

  662. including me,

  663. put his hands

  664. and put my sin

  665. on that scapegoat.

  666. And I want him to see

  667. him shed the blood

  668. of that lamb

  669. because that ceremonial law

  670. is how God has agreed

  671. to have a covenant

  672. with sinners like me.

  673. And I want to picture

  674. my sin being washed away

  675. and my conscience made clean.

  676. I want to be

  677. at your holy temple.

  678. I can't bear for my soul

  679. to feel this way.

  680. I need your grace.

  681. I need to be back

  682. at the place

  683. where you promised

  684. to show your grace to me.

  685. Look at verse 5.

  686. The waters compassed me about

  687. even to my soul.

  688. The depth closed me round about.

  689. The weeds were wrapped

  690. about my head.

  691. What's going on

  692. to Jonah physically

  693. is perfectly describing

  694. the state of his inner man.

  695. He says,

  696. it's my head.

  697. It's my soul

  698. that are drowning,

  699. that are wrapped

  700. in the weeds

  701. of the ocean

  702. and the stomach

  703. of this great fish.

  704. In verse 6,

  705. he says,

  706. I went down

  707. to the bottoms,

  708. to the roots

  709. of the mountains.

  710. The earth with the bars,

  711. with her bars,

  712. was about me forever.

  713. Yet you brought up

  714. my life

  715. from corruption,

  716. O Lord my God.

  717. Verse 7,

  718. When my soul fainted

  719. within me,

  720. I remembered the Lord

  721. and my prayer

  722. came unto thee,

  723. into,

  724. into the very presence

  725. of your holy temple.

  726. When a person dies,

  727. what do we do

  728. with their body?

  729. We dig a hole

  730. under the grass,

  731. sometimes next to a tree.

  732. We place them down there.

  733. We pile on dirt on top.

  734. The roots of the trees,

  735. the roots of the grass

  736. have their way.

  737. Jonah says,

  738. I'm so far below

  739. the surface of the earth.

  740. I'm down to the roots

  741. of the mountains,

  742. under the water,

  743. the very picture

  744. of chaos and death.

  745. And I'm behind the bars

  746. like a prisoner.

  747. And I'm here forever.

  748. He's describing

  749. the state of his soul

  750. and his mind.

  751. But yet,

  752. look at how he trusts

  753. in God's grace.

  754. Look at verse 7.

  755. Even as my soul

  756. is fainting within me,

  757. I'm hopeless.

  758. I remember the Lord.

  759. I remember the grace

  760. of the sovereign Lord.

  761. And I can see

  762. so much grace in God

  763. that I could not

  764. describe my helplessness

  765. and my hopelessness

  766. in stronger terms.

  767. Yet, even from that state,

  768. my prayer goes all the way

  769. inside the holy temple

  770. of God.

  771. And God hears me.

  772. That's a beautiful description

  773. of God's grace.

  774. From the Second London Confession

  775. of 1689 again.

  776. God, before the foundation

  777. of the world was laid

  778. according to his eternal

  779. and immutable purpose

  780. and the secret counsel

  781. of his good pleasure,

  782. of his will,

  783. he has chosen in Christ

  784. a people.

  785. He chose Jonah,

  786. the most miserable,

  787. pathetic, ugly person

  788. on the face of the earth.

  789. That's of grace.

  790. Jonah gets zero credit

  791. for any grace

  792. he's going to receive.

  793. It's worse than that.

  794. He has demerited.

  795. He's in the negative.

  796. And God chose

  797. and predestined

  798. and purchased

  799. and brought

  800. into everlasting glory

  801. out of God's free grace

  802. and love

  803. without any other thing

  804. in the creature

  805. as a condition

  806. or cause

  807. that would move God

  808. to show that kind of grace.

  809. God is sovereign

  810. and God is gracious.

  811. And his grace to you

  812. is a sovereign grace.

  813. We sang that

  814. when darkness veils

  815. his lovely face.

  816. See, that's always

  817. who God is.

  818. He's always lovely.

  819. He's always gracious.

  820. But the darkness

  821. of my distress

  822. sometimes veils that

  823. from my eyes.

  824. And when darkness

  825. veils his lovely face,

  826. I rest

  827. on his

  828. unchanging

  829. grace

  830. in every

  831. high

  832. and stormy

  833. gale

  834. my anchor

  835. holds

  836. within the veil.

  837. It's the distress

  838. that drives us

  839. to cry out

  840. to this

  841. gracious

  842. God.

  843. We pray

  844. knowing

  845. that he is

  846. a God of grace.

  847. Your prayer

  848. goes all the way

  849. inside

  850. of his holy

  851. temple.

  852. It's his character

  853. that makes him

  854. hear your prayer

  855. when you cry out

  856. to him.

  857. And we can pray

  858. let your

  859. steadfast

  860. gracious

  861. love, O Lord,

  862. be upon us

  863. even as we

  864. hope in you.

  865. Do you pray

  866. to this

  867. gracious

  868. God?

  869. Do you pray?

  870. Number five,

  871. pray with hope

  872. in God's

  873. salvation.

  874. Not only is

  875. he gracious

  876. and capable

  877. of showing

  878. grace,

  879. he is the

  880. God who

  881. saves.

  882. Salvation

  883. is of the

  884. Lord.

  885. Pray with hope

  886. in God's

  887. salvation.

  888. Look at

  889. verse 8,

  890. chapter 2,

  891. verse 8.

  892. They that

  893. observe

  894. lying vanities

  895. forsake their

  896. own mercy.

  897. They forsake

  898. the steadfast

  899. love of God

  900. who turned

  901. to idols.

  902. That's the

  903. nation of

  904. Israel.

  905. They're missing

  906. out on the

  907. loving kindness

  908. of God.

  909. Jonah is

  910. getting it

  911. from the

  912. pit of

  913. hell.

  914. And Israel,

  915. the nation,

  916. is missing

  917. out.

  918. Verse 9,

  919. he says,

  920. I will

  921. sacrifice

  922. unto you

  923. with the

  924. voice of

  925. thanksgiving.

  926. What God

  927. desires is

  928. the heart

  929. and the

  930. mind of

  931. Jonah,

  932. to be

  933. filled with

  934. gratitude

  935. and to

  936. cry out

  937. with prayers

  938. of thanksgiving.

  939. And he

  940. says,

  941. I will pay

  942. what I have

  943. vowed.

  944. Out of my

  945. gratitude,

  946. I will

  947. obey.

  948. And he

  949. declares,

  950. salvation

  951. is of the

  952. Lord.

  953. Jonah,

  954. he knew,

  955. he's behind

  956. the bars

  957. of death

  958. forever.

  959. But salvation

  960. is of the

  961. Lord.

  962. If he's to

  963. be saved,

  964. it will be

  965. from God.

  966. He cannot

  967. save himself.

  968. You won't

  969. get to

  970. experience

  971. God's

  972. salvation

  973. until God

  974. gets you

  975. to that

  976. point.

  977. I cannot

  978. save myself.

  979. Salvation

  980. is of the

  981. Lord alone.

  982. Verse 10,

  983. God not

  984. only promises

  985. salvation,

  986. he makes

  987. it happen

  988. in history.

  989. He actually

  990. saves,

  991. he actually

  992. redeems.

  993. In verse

  994. 10,

  995. the Lord

  996. spoke to

  997. the fish

  998. and the

  999. fish vomited

  1000. out Jonah

  1001. upon dry

  1002. land.

  1003. Jonah was

  1004. cast from

  1005. the ship

  1006. into the

  1007. sea to

  1008. satisfy God's

  1009. justice.

  1010. Jonah was

  1011. buried for

  1012. three days

  1013. inside the

  1014. belly of

  1015. hell.

  1016. And now

  1017. God

  1018. saves.

  1019. God

  1020. saves.

  1021. This

  1022. same

  1023. man

  1024. now

  1025. stands

  1026. on the

  1027. beach

  1028. breathing

  1029. fresh air,

  1030. the sand

  1031. coming up

  1032. between his

  1033. toes,

  1034. a living

  1035. ugly

  1036. man,

  1037. stinky.

  1038. He's alive

  1039. though.

  1040. Jonah was

  1041. saved.

  1042. God

  1043. actually saved

  1044. him in

  1045. history.

  1046. This is no

  1047. mythology.

  1048. This is no

  1049. story or

  1050. tale.

  1051. Our Lord

  1052. Jesus himself,

  1053. listen to how

  1054. he describes

  1055. this in

  1056. Matthew

    Matthew 12:40

  1057. chapter 12

  1058. verse 40.

  1059. Jesus said,

  1060. John Gill

  1061. commented,

  1062. Jonah's

  1063. deliverance

  1064. was a

  1065. shadow of

  1066. our Lord's

  1067. resurrection

  1068. from the

  1069. dead.

  1070. What God

  1071. did to

  1072. Jonah,

  1073. it was a

  1074. pledge,

  1075. a promise,

  1076. a guarantee.

  1077. It was a

  1078. hope-building

  1079. picture for

  1080. you and for

  1081. me.

  1082. Of our

  1083. resurrection,

  1084. with Christ

  1085. one day.

  1086. If God

  1087. can do

  1088. this,

  1089. which he

  1090. did,

  1091. of course,

  1092. God can

  1093. raise the

  1094. dead.

  1095. That's why

  1096. we can

  1097. pray with

  1098. hope in

  1099. the God

  1100. who actually

  1101. saves.

  1102. And we

  1103. can call to

  1104. one another

  1105. to trust in

  1106. this God

  1107. of salvation.

  1108. Salvation

  1109. belongs to

  1110. him.

  1111. We sing,

  1112. come,

  1113. oh sinner,

  1114. come and

  1115. mourn.

  1116. For he,

  1117. Jesus Christ,

  1118. calls your

  1119. sin his

  1120. own.

  1121. Do you

  1122. feel the

  1123. weight of

  1124. justice

  1125. served?

  1126. He,

  1127. Jesus Christ,

  1128. suffered the

  1129. wrath that

  1130. you deserved.

  1131. Jonah was

  1132. cast into

  1133. the ocean

  1134. and the

  1135. wrath of

  1136. God was

  1137. satisfied,

  1138. but that

  1139. was for

  1140. Jonah's

  1141. own sin.

  1142. Jesus Christ

  1143. was cast

  1144. into the

  1145. belly of

  1146. hell and

  1147. he was

  1148. there for

  1149. three days

  1150. and three

  1151. nights,

  1152. yet he

  1153. was sinless.

  1154. Why did

  1155. he do

  1156. that?

  1157. He did

  1158. that to

  1159. atone for

  1160. your sin

  1161. because God

  1162. is just

  1163. and God

  1164. is a God

  1165. of salvation

  1166. and this

  1167. is God

  1168. showing you

  1169. I came

  1170. to save

  1171. you.

  1172. You can

  1173. sing now,

  1174. for my life

  1175. Jesus bled

  1176. and died.

  1177. For my life

  1178. justice has

  1179. been satisfied

  1180. and we have

  1181. the hope

  1182. now we

  1183. will be

  1184. raised with

  1185. him to

  1186. endless life.

  1187. Why?

  1188. Because it

  1189. is the

  1190. Lord

  1191. himself

  1192. from

  1193. beginning

  1194. to

  1195. end

  1196. who

  1197. holds

  1198. you

  1199. fast

  1200. and

  1201. he

  1202. will

  1203. hold

  1204. you

  1205. fast

  1206. through

  1207. your

  1208. distress.

  1209. He will

  1210. use that

  1211. distress

  1212. to break

  1213. you down

  1214. to make

  1215. you turn

  1216. to him

  1217. alone

  1218. again

  1219. for

  1220. salvation

  1221. so you

  1222. will cry

  1223. out to

  1224. him

  1225. trusting

  1226. in God's

  1227. character

  1228. with hope

  1229. that he

  1230. is the

  1231. God

  1232. who

  1233. saves

  1234. and you

  1235. will

  1236. pray

  1237. let

  1238. your

  1239. steadfast

  1240. love

  1241. oh

  1242. Lord

  1243. once again

  1244. be upon

  1245. me

  1246. even as

  1247. I put

  1248. my

  1249. hope

  1250. in

  1251. you

  1252. the

  1253. God

  1254. of

  1255. salvation

  1256. do

  1257. you

  1258. pray

  1259. to

  1260. the

  1261. God

  1262. of

  1268. six

  1269. pray

  1270. with

  1271. hope

  1272. in

  1273. God's

  1275. pray

  1278. in

  1279. God's

  1283. Jonah

    Jonah 3:1

  1284. chapter

  1285. 3

  1286. verse

  1287. 1

  1288. and

  1289. the

  1290. word

  1291. of

  1292. the

  1293. Lord

  1294. came

  1295. to

  1296. Jonah

  1297. the

  1300. the

  1301. word

  1302. of

  1303. the

  1304. Lord

  1305. came

  1306. to

  1307. Jonah

  1308. this

  1310. around

  1311. when

  1312. he

  1313. hears

  1314. the

  1316. of

  1317. the

  1318. Lord

  1319. look

  1320. what

  1321. he

  1322. does

  1323. in

  1324. verse

  1325. 2

  1326. the

  1327. word

  1328. of

  1329. the

  1330. Lord

  1331. says

  1332. arise

  1333. Jonah

  1334. go to

  1335. Nineveh

  1336. that

  1337. great

  1338. city

  1339. and

  1340. preach

  1341. unto

  1342. it

  1343. preach

  1344. what

  1345. I

  1346. will

  1347. bid

  1348. thee

  1349. to

  1350. preach

  1351. so

  1352. there's

  1353. Jonah

  1354. standing

  1355. at

  1356. the

  1357. beach

  1358. and

  1359. there's

  1360. the

  1361. Mediterranean

  1362. sea

  1363. I

  1364. believe

  1365. the

  1366. great

  1367. fish

  1368. vomited

  1369. him

  1370. up

  1371. right

  1372. there

  1373. on

  1374. the

  1375. beach

  1376. somewhere

  1377. the

  1378. hypothesis

  1379. that

  1380. that

  1381. great

  1382. fish

  1383. would

  1384. have

  1385. taken

  1386. him

  1387. all

  1388. the

  1389. way

  1390. to

  1391. Nineveh

  1392. it

  1393. would

  1394. have

  1395. taken

  1396. months

  1397. unless

  1398. the

  1399. Lord

  1400. made

  1401. it

  1402. go

  1403. extra

  1404. fast

  1405. but

  1406. logically

  1407. it

  1408. was

  1409. just

  1410. right

  1411. there

  1412. three

  1413. days

  1414. three

  1415. nights

  1416. and

  1417. now

  1418. he's

  1419. standing

  1420. on

  1421. the

  1422. sand

  1423. and

  1424. the

  1425. word

  1426. of

  1427. the

  1428. Lord

  1429. comes

  1430. as

  1431. if

  1432. echoing

  1433. across

  1434. the

  1435. ocean

  1436. waters

  1437. notice

  1438. how

  1439. Psalm

  1440. 29

  1441. 3

  1442. says

  1443. the

  1444. voice

  1445. of

  1446. the

  1447. Lord

  1448. is

  1449. upon

  1450. the

  1451. waters

  1452. the

  1453. God

  1454. of

  1455. glory

  1456. thunders

  1457. the

  1458. Lord

  1459. is

  1460. upon

  1461. many

  1462. waters

  1463. the

  1464. voice

  1465. of

  1466. the

  1467. Lord

  1468. is

  1469. powerful

  1470. the

  1471. voice

  1472. of

  1473. the

  1474. Lord

  1475. is

  1476. full

  1477. of

  1478. majesty

  1479. and

  1480. the

  1481. Lord

  1482. sits

  1483. upon

  1484. the

  1485. flood

  1486. yea

  1487. the

  1488. Lord

  1489. sits

  1490. as

  1491. king

  1492. forever

  1493. to

  1494. the

  1495. landlocked

  1496. Israelites

  1497. the

  1498. ocean

  1499. the

  1500. waters

  1501. was

  1502. a

  1503. picture

  1504. of

  1505. death

  1506. and

  1507. fear

  1508. and

  1509. chaos

  1510. it's

  1511. the

  1512. waters

  1513. of

  1514. judgment

  1515. yet

  1516. the

  1517. Lord

  1518. sits

  1519. enthroned

  1520. over

  1521. the

  1522. waters

  1523. and

  1524. the

  1525. word

  1526. of

  1527. the

  1528. Lord

  1529. comes

  1530. to

  1531. Jonah

  1532. even

  1533. if

  1534. it

  1535. came

  1536. as

  1537. a

  1538. whisper

  1539. he's

  1540. picturing

  1541. death

  1542. itself

  1543. in

  1544. these

  1545. oceans

  1546. and

  1547. he

  1548. looks

  1549. back

  1550. across

  1551. now

  1552. on

  1553. the

  1554. land

  1555. and

  1556. he

  1557. sees

  1558. all

  1559. of

  1560. Israel

  1561. and

  1562. to

  1563. get

  1564. to

  1565. Nineveh

  1566. where

  1567. the

  1568. word

  1569. of

  1570. the

  1571. Lord

  1572. is

  1573. telling

  1574. him

  1575. to

  1576. go

  1577. he

  1578. has

  1579. to

  1580. travel

  1581. all

  1582. the

  1583. way

  1584. across

  1585. this

  1586. land

  1587. of

  1588. Israel

  1589. I

  1590. wonder

  1591. if

  1592. this

  1593. is

  1594. even

  1595. how

  1596. he's

  1597. composing

  1598. this

  1599. beautiful

  1600. poem

  1601. and

  1602. prayer

  1603. if

  1604. that's

  1605. where

  1606. we

  1607. get

  1608. you

  1609. know

  1610. the

  1611. seeds

  1612. of

  1613. Jonah

    Jonah 2 chapter mention

  1614. chapter

  1615. 2

  1616. is

  1617. him

  1618. marching

  1619. from

  1620. the

  1621. coast

  1622. all

  1623. the

  1624. way

  1625. across

  1626. Israel

  1627. to

  1628. Nineveh

  1629. pray

  1630. with

  1631. hope

  1632. in

  1633. God's

  1634. word

  1635. we

  1636. hope

  1637. in

  1638. God's

  1639. promises

  1640. that

  1641. he

  1642. gives

  1643. us

  1644. in

  1645. his

  1646. word

  1647. so

  1648. when

  1649. you

  1650. pray

  1651. to

  1652. the

  1653. Lord

  1654. you're

  1655. praying

  1656. not

  1657. your

  1658. own

  1659. thoughts

  1660. or

  1661. your

  1662. own

  1663. ideas

  1664. you're

  1665. taking

  1666. what

  1667. God's

  1668. word

  1669. himself

  1670. has

  1671. given

  1672. you

  1673. his

  1674. promises

  1675. flow

  1676. to

  1677. you

  1678. and

  1679. when

  1680. you

  1681. take

  1682. his

  1683. word

  1684. and

  1685. you're

  1686. taking

  1687. his

  1688. word

  1689. to

  1690. hold

  1691. on

  1692. to

  1693. his

  1694. promises

  1695. it's

  1696. like

  1697. drinking

  1698. from

  1699. his

  1700. crystal

  1701. stream

  1702. the

  1703. promises

  1704. of

  1705. God

  1706. and

  1707. in

  1708. your

  1709. distress

  1710. you

  1711. cry

  1712. out

  1713. to

  1714. the

  1715. Lord

  1716. you

  1717. cry

  1718. out

  1719. to

  1720. the

  1721. God

  1722. who

  1723. has

  1724. not

  1725. been

  1726. silent

  1727. or

  1728. distant

  1729. he's

  1730. brought

  1731. himself

  1732. near

  1733. by

  1734. his

  1735. word

  1736. and

  1737. you

  1738. don't

  1739. need

  1740. to

  1741. wonder

  1742. who

  1743. God

  1744. is

  1745. you

  1746. have

  1747. his

  1748. word

  1749. who

  1750. reveals

  1751. God

  1752. to

  1753. you

  1754. you

  1755. pray

  1756. that

  1757. God

  1758. will

  1759. help

  1760. us

  1761. to

  1762. grasp

  1763. the

  1764. heights

  1765. from

  1766. his

  1767. word

  1768. of

  1769. his

  1770. plans

  1771. for

  1772. us

  1773. like

  1774. we

  1775. sing

  1776. he

  1777. teaches

  1778. us

  1779. truths

  1780. unchanged

  1781. from

  1782. the

  1783. dawn

  1784. of

  1785. time

  1786. that

  1787. will

  1788. echo

  1789. down

  1790. through

  1791. eternity

  1792. and

  1793. it's

  1794. through

  1795. his

  1796. word

  1797. that

  1798. we

  1799. know

  1800. of

  1801. the

  1802. grace

  1803. in

  1804. which

  1805. we

  1806. stand

  1807. on

  1808. his

  1809. promises

  1810. so

  1811. you

  1812. pray

  1813. with

  1814. hope

  1815. in

  1816. God

  1817. and

  1818. your

  1819. hope

  1820. is

  1821. anchored

  1822. on

  1823. his

  1824. word

  1825. what

  1826. he

  1827. has

  1828. revealed

  1829. number

  1830. seven

  1831. you

  1832. pray

  1833. with

  1834. hope

  1835. in

  1836. God's

  1837. power

  1838. you

  1839. pray

  1840. with

  1841. hope

  1842. you

  1843. put

  1844. your

  1845. hope

  1846. you

  1847. get

  1848. your

  1849. hopes

  1850. up

  1851. you

  1852. set

  1853. his

  1854. powerful

  1855. he

  1856. is

  1857. powerful

  1858. to

  1859. either

  1860. judge

  1861. and

  1862. overthrow

  1863. a

  1864. great

  1865. empire

  1866. like

  1867. Assyria

  1868. or

  1869. God

  1870. is

  1871. powerful

  1872. that

  1873. his

  1874. word

  1875. calling

  1876. them

  1877. to

  1878. repent

  1879. will

  1880. humble

  1881. them

  1882. and

  1883. break

  1884. them

  1885. down

  1886. either

  1887. way

  1888. you

  1889. trust

  1890. the

  1891. power

  1892. of

  1893. God

  1894. so

  1895. chapter

  1896. 3

  1897. verse

  1898. 3

  1899. Jonah

  1900. arose

  1901. and

  1902. went

  1903. into

  1904. Nineveh

  1905. according

  1906. to the

  1907. word

  1908. of the

  1909. Lord

  1910. now

  1911. Nineveh

  1912. was

  1913. an

  1914. exceedingly

  1915. great

  1916. city

  1917. if

  1918. you

  1919. start

  1920. walking

  1921. on

  1922. one

  1923. side

  1924. notice

  1925. Jonah

  1926. travels

  1927. one

  1928. day's

  1929. worth

  1930. into

  1931. it

  1932. so

  1933. he's

  1934. getting

  1935. right

  1936. to

  1937. the

  1938. hub

  1939. right

  1940. to

  1941. the

  1942. heart

  1943. of

  1944. Nineveh

  1945. and

  1946. when

  1947. he

  1948. gets

  1949. into

  1950. the

  1951. city

  1952. he

  1953. enters

  1954. into

  1955. it

  1956. he

  1957. opens

  1958. up

  1959. his

  1960. mouth

  1961. and

  1962. cries

  1963. out

  1964. the

  1965. word

  1966. that

  1967. God

  1968. gave

  1969. him

  1970. in

  1971. verse

  1972. 4

  1973. he

  1974. says

  1975. yet

  1976. forty

  1977. days

  1978. and

  1979. Nineveh

  1980. shall

  1981. be

  1982. overthrown

  1983. there's

  1984. no

  1985. longer

  1986. that

  1987. fear

  1988. of

  1989. this

  1990. great

  1991. city

  1992. look

  1993. what

  1994. he's

  1995. already

  1996. come

  1997. through

  1998. to

  1999. this

  2000. point

  2001. his

  2002. thoughts

  2003. are

  2004. of

  2005. God

  2006. alone

  2007. it's

  2008. the

  2009. fear

  2010. of

  2011. God

  2012. that

  2013. has

  2014. filled

  2015. him

  2016. and

  2017. he

  2018. declares

  2019. to

  2020. Nineveh

  2021. what

  2022. God

  2023. gave

  2024. him

  2025. to

  2026. declare

  2027. no

  2028. more

  2029. no

  2030. less

  2031. the

  2032. word

  2033. of

  2034. the

  2035. God

  2036. who

  2037. he

  2038. fears

  2039. and

  2040. who

  2041. he

  2042. thinks

  2043. about

  2044. and

  2045. who

  2046. he

  2047. has

  2048. exalted

  2049. now

  2050. and

  2051. all

  2052. these

  2053. glorious

  2054. attributes

  2055. that's

  2056. what

  2057. fills

  2058. his

  2059. mind

  2060. and

  2061. that's

  2062. what

  2063. melts

  2064. away

  2065. his

  2066. fear

  2067. of

  2068. man

  2069. God

  2070. had

  2071. been

  2072. powerful

  2073. to

  2074. Jonah

  2075. over

  2076. the

  2077. waves

  2078. over

  2079. the

  2080. wind

  2081. over

  2082. the

  2083. great

  2084. fish

  2085. now

  2086. God

  2087. would

  2088. show

  2089. his

  2090. power

  2091. over

  2092. Nineveh

  2093. over

  2094. the

  2095. Assyrian

  2096. empire

  2097. over

  2098. the

  2099. Israelite

  2100. nation

  2101. God

  2102. is

  2103. powerful

  2104. to

  2105. his

  2106. promise

  2107. he's

  2108. powerful

  2109. to

  2110. his

  2111. word

  2112. and

  2113. all

  2114. of

  2115. his

  2116. promises

  2117. find

  2118. their

  2119. yes

  2120. and

  2121. amen

  2122. in

  2123. Jesus

  2124. Christ

  2125. so

  2126. when

  2127. we

  2128. pray

  2129. trusting

  2130. in

  2131. the

  2132. power

  2133. of

  2134. God

  2135. we

  2136. pray

  2137. in

  2138. the

  2139. powerful

  2140. name

  2141. of

  2142. Jesus

  2143. the

  2144. word

  2145. of

  2146. God

  2147. J.C.

  2148. Ryle

  2149. said

  2150. there are

  2151. exceeding

  2152. great

  2153. and

  2154. precious

  2155. promises

  2156. to

  2157. those

  2158. who

  2159. pray

  2160. what

  2161. did

  2162. the

  2163. Lord

  2164. Jesus

  2165. mean

  2166. when

  2167. he

  2168. spoke

  2169. such

  2170. words

  2171. as

  2172. these

  2173. ask

  2174. and

  2175. it

  2176. shall

  2177. be

  2178. given

  2179. to

  2180. you

  2181. seek

  2182. and

  2183. you

  2184. shall

  2185. find

  2186. knock

  2187. and

  2188. the

  2189. door

  2190. shall

  2191. be

  2192. opened

  2193. unto

  2194. you

  2195. for

  2196. everyone

  2197. that

  2198. asks

  2199. receives

  2200. and

  2201. to

  2202. the

  2203. powerful

  2204. name

  2205. of

  2206. Jesus

  2207. Christ

  2208. name

  2209. above

  2210. all

  2211. names

  2212. so

  2213. in

  2214. your

  2215. distress

  2216. you

  2217. cry

  2218. out

  2219. to

  2220. God

  2221. you

  2222. cry

  2223. out

  2224. in

  2225. the

  2226. name

  2227. of

  2228. Jesus

  2229. Christ

  2230. for

  2231. Christ's

  2232. sake

  2233. alone

  2234. you

  2235. cry

  2236. out

  2237. to

  2238. God

  2239. and

  2240. you

  2241. pray

  2242. trusting

  2243. that

  2244. the

  2245. full

  2246. character

  2247. of

  2248. God

  2249. has

  2250. been

  2251. revealed

  2252. to

  2253. us

  2254. in

  2255. the

  2256. person

  2257. of

  2258. Jesus

  2259. Christ

  2260. in

  2261. Jesus

  2262. Christ

  2263. we

  2264. see

  2265. the

  2266. justice

  2267. of

  2268. God

  2269. in

  2270. Jesus

  2271. Christ

  2272. we

  2273. see

  2274. the

  2275. greatest

  2276. display

  2277. of

  2278. God's

  2279. providence

  2280. in

  2281. Jesus

  2282. Christ

  2283. we

  2284. see

  2285. the

  2286. sovereignty

  2287. of

  2288. God

  2289. there's

  2290. no

  2291. better

  2292. picture

  2293. for us

  2294. of

  2295. the

  2296. grace

  2297. of

  2298. God

  2299. but

  2300. in

  2301. the

  2302. person

  2303. and

  2304. work

  2305. of

  2306. our

  2307. Lord

  2308. Jesus

  2309. in

  2310. Jesus

  2311. Christ

  2312. we

  2313. see

  2314. the

  2315. salvation

  2316. that

  2317. God

  2318. alone

  2319. provides

  2320. in

  2321. Jesus

  2322. Christ

  2323. we

  2324. see

  2325. the

  2326. word

  2327. of

  2328. God

  2329. made

  2330. flesh

  2331. and

  2332. in

  2333. Jesus

  2334. Christ

  2335. we

  2336. see

  2337. the

  2338. power

  2339. of

  2340. God

  2341. so

  2342. my

  2343. last

  2344. one

  2345. number

  2346. eight

  2347. is

  2348. pray

  2349. with

  2350. hope

  2351. that

  2352. in

  2353. the

  2354. name

  2355. of

  2356. Jesus

  2357. Christ

  2358. God

  2359. will

  2360. hear

  2361. you

  2362. too

  2363. pray

  2364. with

  2365. hope

  2366. that

  2367. God

  2368. will

  2369. hear

  2370. you

  2371. when

  2372. you

  2373. pray

  2374. when

  2375. you

  2376. cry

  2377. out

  2378. to

  2379. him

  2380. not

  2381. only

  2382. will

  2383. he

  2384. hear

  2385. you

  2386. he

  2387. will

  2388. come

  2389. near

  2390. to

  2391. you

  2392. by

  2393. his

  2394. Holy

  2395. Spirit

  2396. and

  2397. sanctify

  2398. you

  2399. through

  2400. that

  2401. distress

  2402. as

  2403. you

  2404. pray

  2405. pray

  2406. in

  2407. your

  2408. affliction

  2409. pray

  2410. in

  2411. turmoil

  2412. there's

  2413. no

  2414. new

  2415. verses

  2416. but

  2417. I

  2418. want

  2419. to

  2420. point

  2421. out

  2422. to

  2423. you

  2424. the

  2425. fact

  2426. that

  2427. God

  2428. hears

  2429. you

  2430. with

  2431. two

  2432. verses

  2433. look

  2434. at

  2435. chapter

  2436. 2

  2437. verse

  2438. 2

  2439. Jonah

  2440. says

  2441. I cried

  2442. out

  2443. in

  2444. my

  2445. affliction

  2446. unto

  2447. the

  2448. Lord

  2449. and

  2450. what

  2451. comes

  2452. next

  2453. he

  2454. heard

  2455. me

  2456. you

  2457. pray

  2458. to

  2459. a

  2460. God

  2461. who

  2462. will

  2463. hear

  2464. you

  2465. too

  2466. out

  2467. of

  2468. the

  2469. belly

  2470. I

  2471. cried

  2472. out

  2473. he

  2474. says

  2475. in

  2476. verse

  2477. 2

  2478. and

  2479. thou

  2480. heard

  2481. my

  2482. voice

  2483. out

  2484. the

  2485. belly

  2486. of

  2487. hell

  2488. now

  2489. look at

  2490. verse

  2491. 7

  2492. chapter

  2493. 2

  2494. verse

  2495. 7

  2496. when

  2497. my

  2498. soul

  2499. fainted

  2500. within

  2501. me

  2502. some

  2503. of

  2504. you

  2505. might

  2506. be

  2507. feeling

  2508. this

  2509. way

  2510. today

  2511. your

  2512. soul

  2513. is

  2514. fainting

  2515. within

  2516. you

  2517. I

  2518. remembered

  2519. the

  2520. Lord

  2521. and

  2522. my

  2523. prayer

  2524. came

  2525. unto

  2526. thee

  2527. into

  2528. thy

  2529. holy

  2530. temple

  2531. Jonah

  2532. prayed

  2533. with

  2534. hope

  2535. in

  2536. God's

  2537. character

  2538. trusting

  2539. God's

  2540. word

  2541. he

  2542. prayed

  2543. with

  2544. hope

  2545. that

  2546. God

  2547. will

  2548. hear

  2549. him

  2550. God

  2551. not

  2552. only

  2553. heard

  2554. him

  2555. but

  2556. God

  2557. sanctified

  2558. him

  2559. and

  2560. you

  2561. can

  2562. pray

  2563. with

  2564. hope

  2565. in

  2566. God's

  2567. character

  2568. too

  2569. you

  2570. trust

  2571. Christ

  2572. you

  2573. trust

  2574. God's

  2575. word

  2576. and

  2577. you

  2578. pray

  2579. not

  2580. only

  2581. the

  2582. promise

  2583. of

  2584. salvation

  2585. but

  2586. you

  2587. pray

  2588. knowing

  2589. that

  2590. your

  2591. salvation

  2592. is

  2593. complete

  2594. in

  2595. Christ

  2596. do

  2597. you

  2598. pray

  2599. distress

  2600. drives

  2601. you to

  2602. see

  2603. the

  2604. character

  2605. of

  2606. God

  2607. more

  2608. clearly

  2609. and

  2610. when

  2611. you

  2612. see

  2613. God's

  2614. character

  2615. you

  2616. cry

  2617. out

  2618. to

  2619. him

  2620. because

  2621. his

  2622. character

  2623. is

  2624. what

  2625. restores

  2626. your

  2627. hope

  2628. to

  2629. pray

  2630. and

  2631. you

  2632. pray

  2633. Lord

  2634. let

  2635. your

  2636. steadfast

  2637. love

  2638. oh

  2639. Lord

  2640. be

  2641. upon

  2642. me

  2643. even

  2644. as

  2645. I

  2646. put

  2647. my

  2648. hope

  2649. in

  2650. you

  2651. hear

  2652. the

  2653. words

  2654. of

  2655. Jesus

  2656. in

  2657. the

  2658. hymn

  2659. that

  2660. we

  2661. sing

  2662. when

  2663. through

  2664. the

  2666. waters

  2667. I

  2668. call

  2669. thee

  2670. to

  2671. go

  2672. the

  2673. rivers

  2674. of

  2675. sorrow

  2676. shall

  2677. not

  2678. overflow

  2679. for

  2680. I

  2681. will

  2682. be

  2683. with

  2684. thee

  2685. thy

  2686. troubles

  2687. to

  2688. bless

  2689. and

  2701. confidence

  2702. in

  2703. his

  2704. character

  2705. salvation

  2706. is of

  2707. God

  2708. let's

  2709. pray

  2710. oh

  2711. Lord

  2712. let

  2713. your

  2714. steadfast

  2715. love

  2716. be upon

  2717. us

  2718. even

  2719. when

  2720. it

  2721. feels

  2722. like

  2723. you

  2724. are

  2725. in

  2726. that

  2727. distance

  2728. even

  2729. when

  2730. it

  2731. feels

  2732. like

  2733. we

  2734. are

  2735. so

  2736. sinful

  2737. that

  2738. we

  2739. don't

  2740. have

  2741. any

  2743. we

  2744. look

  2745. to

  2746. Christ

  2747. Lord

  2748. help

  2749. us

  2750. to

  2751. put

  2752. our

  2754. fully

  2755. in

  2756. him

  2757. we

  2758. thank

  2759. you

  2760. Lord

  2761. that

  2762. you

  2763. are

  2764. close

  2765. you

  2766. are

  2767. with

  2768. us

  2769. you

  2770. are

  2771. a

  2772. present

  2773. help

  2774. you
