  1. The book of Psalms, do you remember how many psalms there are?

  2. 150 psalms written over a span of how many years?

  3. That's right, at least a thousand years span.

  4. So really covering the entire history of God's revelation.

  5. Psalm chapter 2 today.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  6. I want to share a couple of things for you to keep in mind as we read through the entire psalm.

  7. My dear friend, Matthew Henry, a Puritan commentator, said the first psalm is law, showing us our duty.

  8. This psalm, Psalm 2, is evangelical, showing us our Savior.

  9. So look for the Savior in Psalm 2.

  10. The Savior is called the Lord's anointed in verse 2.

  11. He's the Lord's established king in verse 6, and he's the begotten son of Jehovah in verses 7 and 12.

  12. We saw last week how Psalm 1 taught us that it is spiritually fatal to be directed by the world.

  13. Instead, we should be directed by the law of God.

  14. Now, Psalm 2 teaches us that it's also spiritually fatal to go through life on this earth being intimidated of the world,

  15. a world that rejects God's law.

  16. That's also spiritually fatal.

  17. So listen, as we read Psalm 2, the contrast is set.

  18. The blessed way and the way that perishes.

  19. Now in Psalm 2, we will see that though it's hard to walk the blessed way,

  20. we have reason to rejoice with trembling.

  21. As I read Psalm 2, you follow along.

  22. Remember, this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, insufficient word.

  23. This is God's very own word for you, His people.

  24. When I'm done reading, I'll say, this is the word of the Lord.

  25. We'll respond by saying, thanks be to God.

  26. All right, Psalm 2.

  27. Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

  28. The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His anointed,

  29. saying, verse 3,

  30. Let us break their bands asunder and cast away their cords from us.

  31. Verse 4,

  32. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh.

  33. The Lord shall have them in derision.

  34. Then shall He speak unto them in His wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure.

  35. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

  36. I will declare the decree.

  37. Verse 7,

  38. The Lord has said unto me,

  39. Thou art my son.

  40. This day have I begotten thee.

  41. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance.

  42. And the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

  43. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron.

  44. Thou shalt dash them into pieces like a potter's vessel.

  45. Be wise now, therefore, O ye kings.

  46. Be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

  47. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

  48. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way.

  49. When His wrath is kindled but a little.

  50. Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him.

  51. This is the word of the Lord.

  52. Thanks be to God.

  53. You may be seated.

  54. We're told in Isaiah 40 that the grass withers,

  55. and the flower fades,

  56. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  57. Would you pray with me?

  58. O anointed King,

  59. declare to us the divine decree once again today.

  60. Cause us by the power of your Holy Spirit in us and with us as a body.

  61. Cause us to rejoice with trembling at the sight of you

  62. when we behold you seated on your throne, we ask.

  63. For Christ's sake, amen.

  64. Well, beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  65. how do you have hope and happiness

  66. in a world that rages against God?

  67. Do I need to make the case that this world rages against God,

  68. or are you there?

  69. You're with me.

  70. The world rages against God,

  71. and yet how do we, as pilgrims, as sojourners,

  72. how do we have hope and happiness

  73. as we walk this earth?

  74. I want to give you my one point.

  75. The one point of the sermon is this.

  76. Psalm 2 teaches us to rejoice with trembling at the Holy King.

  77. Rejoice with trembling at the Holy King

  78. and take refuge in Him.

  79. Look at verse 11.

  80. How should you live in this world?

  81. How can you have hope and happiness?

  82. Rejoice with trembling at the Holy King

  83. and take refuge in Him.

  84. That's your source of hope and happiness in this world.

  85. We're going to walk through verse by verse

  86. this glorious, majestic psalm.

  87. And that's been my prayer all week long,

  88. simply that this psalm will elevate our thoughts of God

  89. and cause us to behold Him on His holy hill

  90. and to rejoice with trembling.

  91. History runs red, wrote Pastor Dale Ralph Davis,

  92. with the blood of Messiah's members.

  93. And he quotes from a pastor,

  94. a Christian in China named Brother Yun.

  95. Brother Yun wrote his book

  96. based on what he witnessed in his town of Nanyang,

  97. in 1949 when the Communist Party took over

  98. and made Christianity illegal.

  99. I think this is okay for children to hear.

  100. This is what our brothers and sisters around the world

  101. have suffered for the faith.

  102. He saw Christians, like you and like me,

  103. crucified on the walls of their churches

  104. for refusing to deny Jesus.

  105. He saw other Christians bound up in chains

  106. and that chains attached to the saddle of horses

  107. and they were drug publicly in the streets

  108. at a fast pace until they were drug to death.

  109. One pastor was hoisted up on a makeshift crane

  110. and dropped to the ground.

  111. It didn't kill him.

  112. They hoisted him up again publicly,

  113. dropped him again to his death.

  114. Pastor Davis writes,

  115. This is sadly par for the course

  116. and our current century is already awash

  117. in such brutality.

  118. Hatred for the Messiah spills over

  119. on Messiah's people.

  120. Didn't you see that in Acts 4?

  121. We read Acts 4.

  122. Hatred for God's people.

  123. It's hatred for the Messiah.

  124. Make him stop talking about him.

  125. The world rages against God

  126. and it spills over onto his people.

  127. That's why the psalmist starts in verse 1

  128. by asking the question,

  129. Why?

  130. How can the Christian,

  131. how can the believer,

  132. how can the psalmist have hope

  133. and happiness in a world

  134. that rages against God?

  135. Now look at what the Holy Spirit teaches

  136. the psalmist,

  137. opening his eyes to behold the heavenly realm.

  138. The effect it has on the psalmist

  139. is rejoice with trembling at the Holy King

  140. and take refuge in him.

  141. Now Psalm 2 is very symmetrical.

  142. 12 verses.

  143. Each pairing of three verses

  144. is one scene.

  145. So 12 verses,

  146. four scenes,

  147. three verses each scene.

  148. Let's look first at scene number one.

  149. To set the stage here,

  150. if this were a stage

  151. and you're in ancient Israel

  152. and you're getting to now imagine

  153. what these words describe,

  154. the orchestra would swell up.

  155. It would be noisy, clangy, concophony.

  156. The psalmist desires to walk the blessed way

  157. like you saw in Psalm 1,

  158. but is overwhelmed by the wickedness

  159. of this way that perishes,

  160. that's overwhelming

  161. and pushing in on the narrow way

  162. of the blessed.

  163. So scene one is this.

  164. It's the sin-loving world,

  165. loud,

  166. clamoring together,

  167. conspiring,

  168. hating God

  169. and hating the law of his kingdom.

  170. That's verses one, two, and three.

  171. So the psalmist prays.

  172. And as he prays,

  173. God answers his question,

  174. why?

  175. By telling him it's vain.

  176. Look at verse one.

  177. The psalmist is in dismay.

  178. Why do the nations rage?

  179. And the heathen peoples,

  180. these godless peoples of the nations,

  181. why do they plot a vain thing?

  182. Verse two,

  183. the kings of the earth set themselves

  184. and the rulers take counsel together

  185. against the Lord

  186. and against his anointed,

  187. saying,

  188. let us break their bands asunder

  189. and cast away their cords from us.

  190. You'll see in verse two,

  191. this is the kings of the earth,

  192. the rulers from all the world.

  193. It feels to him like a great conspiracy.

  194. They're all against this king

  195. whose kingdom of heaven

  196. is intruding on earth.

  197. They take counsel together

  198. against the Lord.

  199. See, these are all enemies

  200. and vying for power,

  201. but they have one common enemy,

  202. and that's the king of heaven.

  203. They're vying together

  204. in their power against him now.

  205. Now we get this Trinitarian insight.

  206. It's against the Lord.

  207. The word is Jehovah.

  208. That's the name of God

  209. in covenant to sinners,

  210. the covenant-keeping Lord

  211. and his anointed.

  212. So as the New Testament believers

  213. would have read Psalm 2

  214. in the Greek translation,

  215. the Septuagint,

  216. it would have said

  217. against the Lord and Christ.

  218. You know what?

  219. Christ means anointed.

  220. They're vying against Jehovah,

  221. the covenant-keeping God

  222. of the old covenant,

  223. and his Christ,

  224. and his anointed.

  225. And what is it that they hate

  226. about God and his anointed?

  227. The nations of the world

  228. view themselves

  229. as being bound with cords,

  230. and these bands

  231. are tying them up,

  232. and they're saying,

  233. we are all bound by these cords.

  234. Let's burst them.

  235. And not only burst them

  236. and get free and run away,

  237. let's throw the cords asunder.

  238. Let's throw them away.

  239. Let's be done with this God

  240. who binds us once and for all.

  241. It's a mutiny.

  242. It's the pirates wanting to

  243. topple over the kingdom of heaven.

  244. What are the bonds

  245. that tie and restrain

  246. the kings of the earth?

  247. God declares,

  248. I alone am the Lord.

  249. You shall worship me alone.

  250. And the nations

  251. and the rulers of this world

  252. want to say,

  253. no,

  254. we will make our own little

  255. lowercase g's

  256. in our own image

  257. and worship whoever we want

  258. and have our identity

  259. bound up in those idols

  260. that we have created.

  261. God says,

  262. I claim this day as mine.

  263. I set all of creation in order.

  264. And they rebel.

  265. They say,

  266. we will do whatever we want

  267. on any day that we want.

  268. God says,

  269. in my kingdom,

  270. there is no murder.

  271. Murder is punished.

  272. There are no lies.

  273. There's no envy,

  274. no coveting.

  275. And they say,

  276. we will do whatever we want

  277. and we'll celebrate

  278. those who do it.

  279. And this is the same world

  280. that very quickly,

  281. if left unrestrained,

  282. will self-destroy,

  283. will bring so much wickedness

  284. and violence

  285. that a holy God

  286. can't sit there any longer.

  287. He washed away the world

  288. once with a flood.

  289. So why is it that this world

  290. still has good hospitals,

  291. good schools,

  292. you know,

  293. the arts,

  294. beautiful creative expressions?

  295. It's only by God's

  296. preserving kindness.

  297. That's the only reason.

  298. And yet that moral law,

  299. that moral law of God

  300. which restrains the evil powers,

  301. is what they view as the cause

  302. that they want to rebel against.

  303. If God said it,

  304. their evil hearts are distorted

  305. and they want to rebel against it.

  306. So would a king,

  307. would a loving king

  308. bring this starving lion,

  309. this predator,

  310. into his living room

  311. where his children are,

  312. where his family lives,

  313. and turn the chains loose

  314. and just release the bonds

  315. off of this lion

  316. around his own family?

  317. A good king would never do that.

  318. But that's how the wicked rulers

  319. view God.

  320. He's keeping us back.

  321. Let us go wherever we want

  322. and devour.

  323. We hate your rule, God,

  324. they say.

  325. We love our sin.

  326. They would kill God

  327. if they could.

  328. But the psalmist recognizes

  329. this is in vain.

  330. These men are so darkened

  331. in their thinking.

  332. Isaiah 57, verse 20 says,

    Isaiah 57:20

  333. The wicked are like the tossing sea

  334. that cannot be quiet.

  335. It's tossed up.

  336. The mire and the dirt

  337. swirling all around in it.

  338. There is no peace,

  339. says my God,

  340. for the wicked.

  341. That's how the raging world is.

  342. The world that loves its sin

  343. hates God

  344. and hates the law

  345. of God's kingdom.

  346. Do you get that first scene

  347. in your mind,

  348. verses 1, 2, and 3?

  349. All right.

  350. Well, if you desire

  351. to walk in the way

  352. that is blessed,

  353. you're like the psalmist.

  354. You're like me.

  355. You're feeling overwhelmed

  356. in such a world.

  357. But learn the example

  358. from the psalmist

  359. is ask God the question,

  360. Lord, why?

  361. It's so hard.

  362. Why?

  363. Why is it overwhelming

  364. to be in this world?

  365. You cry out to God.

  366. You don't tremble

  367. at the wicked kings

  368. and the rulers of the world.

  369. You don't fear man.

  370. Because instead,

  371. you see God

  372. exalted above all.

  373. You see that

  374. no matter what they come up with,

  375. it's in vain.

  376. You tremble at God

  377. and then you rejoice

  378. by taking refuge in Him,

  379. the unshakable rock.

  380. Now, scene 2,

  381. verses 4, 5, and 6.

  382. Scene 1,

  383. the psalmist is in

  384. this physical realm

  385. overwhelmed by the foolishness

  386. of the perishing way.

  387. Now, scene 2,

  388. I believe the Holy Spirit

  389. opens the eyes

  390. of the psalmist

  391. to behold the spiritual realm,

  392. which we only see

  393. through the eyes of faith.

  394. So scene 2 is

  395. the sin-hating Lord

  396. enthroned over His kingdom.

  397. Scene 1 was

  398. the sin-loving world

  399. hating God

  400. and the law of His kingdom.

  401. But scene 2 now

  402. is the sin-hating Lord

  403. enthroned on His hill,

  404. His holy kingdom,

  405. over this fallen earth.

  406. Verse 4,

  407. He that sits

  408. in the heaven

  409. shall laugh.

  410. The Lord shall have

  411. these wicked rulers

  412. in derision.

  413. It's like,

  414. it's like these wicked rulers

  415. are bungee jumpers

  416. with spiky rocks

  417. at the bottom

  418. that they're jumping to

  419. and they're saying,

  420. cut these cords off.

  421. Let us,

  422. let us be free

  423. once for all.

  424. And the Lord

  425. holds them in derision.

  426. Romans 2, 14 says,

  427. when the Gentiles

  428. who do not have the law,

  429. referring to the Mosaic law,

  430. but by nature

  431. they do what the law requires,

  432. they are a law

  433. to themselves,

  434. even though they do not

  435. have the law.

  436. Do you know those

  437. who mock the Lord?

  438. Stand-up comedians

  439. or men like

  440. Friedrich Nietzsche

  441. or Stephen Hawking?

  442. They say,

  443. cut off these bungee cords.

  444. Let us plunge to our death.

  445. And the Lord

  446. in His long-suffering kindness

  447. and forbearance,

  448. He's binding them,

  449. holding them

  450. from what will be

  451. their soon destruction.

  452. And those who don't say,

  453. Lord, Your will be done,

  454. He will say,

  455. have it Your way.

  456. He mocks them to scorn.

  457. It's like God says,

  458. do you think I,

  459. the Creator of all,

  460. won't rule over

  461. my own creation?

  462. And His mocking

  463. or just seeing the pettiness,

  464. the vanity of it,

  465. it turns to wrath.

  466. You think God doesn't care

  467. about sin?

  468. You think God

  469. lets the world go

  470. as however it wants to

  471. and doesn't care?

  472. The Lord cares.

  473. He hates sin.

  474. He sees sin

  475. and it turns to wrath.

  476. Look at verse 5.

  477. Then shall He speak unto them

  478. in His wrath

  479. and vex them

  480. in His sore displeasure.

  481. Don't think for a moment

  482. that the Lord is pleased

  483. by sin.

  484. The Lord hates sin.

  485. He is the sin-hating Lord

  486. who is enthroned

  487. over His holy kingdom.

  488. Now look at verse 6.

  489. He says,

  490. I set my king

  491. upon my holy hill

  492. of Zion.

  493. That's how God

  494. responds to the sinful world.

  495. He hates the sin so much,

  496. what does He do?

  497. He sets His Son

  498. to rule over the world.

  499. He makes His hatred of sin

  500. so clear,

  501. not only in the conscience

  502. of every created being,

  503. not only by the law

  504. that was given through Moses

  505. contained in His Word,

  506. but now with Jesus Christ Himself

  507. taking the throne,

  508. the throne over all the nations.

  509. See, the Holy Spirit

  510. throughout all the Old Covenant

  511. was whispering

  512. and hinting

  513. and allowing glimpses

  514. of Christ enthroned.

  515. Isaiah got this glimpse.

  516. He said in Isaiah 66,

  517. 1,

  518. Of God,

  519. heaven is my throne,

  520. the earth is my footstool.

  521. The psalmist here in Psalm 2

  522. gets a glimpse of heaven.

  523. There sits the Lord

  524. and His anointed.

  525. On the throne of heaven,

  526. the spiritual realm

  527. puts His feet.

  528. It's like the king

  529. stomping down on the earth.

  530. It's His footstool.

  531. He does whatever He pleases.

  532. So how do you have hope?

  533. How do you have hope

  534. in a world that rages against God?

  535. You behold God

  536. on His throne,

  537. the throne of heaven,

  538. and you behold

  539. His anointed one,

  540. His Son,

  541. set by God

  542. on that holy hill.

  543. By elevating your thoughts

  544. off of man

  545. and the brokenness

  546. of this world,

  547. you behold God,

  548. you rejoice

  549. with trembling,

  550. and you take refuge

  551. in Him.

  552. All right,

  553. scene three,

  554. verses seven,

  555. eight,

  556. and nine.

  557. The Holy Spirit

  558. shows the psalmist

  559. what the Creator God

  560. decrees.

  561. The Father,

  562. Son,

  563. promise here.

  564. And this is the chief end

  565. of the whole world.

  566. This is so glorious.

  567. So scene three is,

  568. the world-loving Son

  569. promised

  570. to inherit

  571. the uttermost parts

  572. of the earth.

  573. Yes,

  574. God hates the world,

  575. but the Son

  576. shows the love

  577. of God

  578. for sinners

  579. to the uttermost parts

  580. of this sinful world.

  581. And He receives them

  582. as part of His kingdom.

  583. Look at verse seven.

  584. I will declare

  585. the decree.

  586. So what does the Son do?

  587. He preaches.

  588. He declares.

  589. What does He declare?

  590. He declares the decree.

  591. What's a decree?

  592. A decree is

  593. what the sovereign,

  594. eternal King

  595. has determined,

  596. sovereignly willed,

  597. that will come to pass.

  598. That's what a King

  599. makes a decree.

  600. This will come to pass

  601. in my kingdom.

  602. So verse seven,

  603. I will declare

  604. the decree.

  605. What is the decree?

  606. The Lord

  607. hath said unto me,

  608. Thou art my Son.

  609. This day

  610. have I begotten Thee.

  611. So,

  612. there are only two categories.

  613. It's creation

  614. or the Creator.

  615. The Son is not created.

  616. The Son is Creator.

  617. So,

  618. the same essence

  619. of God,

  620. the very God,

  621. of very God,

  622. the begotten Son,

  623. the eternally generated

  624. Son.

  625. Now,

  626. it's a mystery to us,

  627. but this is so important.

  628. The Son was not created.

  629. The Son,

  630. eternally,

  631. is revealing now

  632. to the created world

  633. the decree

  634. of the loving Father.

  635. So,

  636. Father,

  637. Son,

  638. now where's the Holy Spirit?

  639. Well,

  640. remember,

  641. He's called the Anointed.

  642. This is the Anointed Son

  643. that the Father

  644. has set on His hill.

  645. John Calvin,

  646. during the Reformation,

  647. pointed out

  648. there are three offices

  649. in the Old Testament

  650. that are anointed.

  651. It's prophet,

  652. priest,

  653. and king.

  654. You've heard those terms.

  655. Where do we get

  656. prophet,

  657. priest,

  658. and king from?

  659. It's because in the Old Testament,

  660. those are the offices

  661. that were anointed.

  662. They're anointed either by oil,

  663. by the Holy Spirit,

  664. or both.

  665. So,

  666. the Son of God,

  667. the eternally generated,

  668. begotten Son of God,

  669. is the anointed one,

  670. anointed by the Holy Spirit.

  671. In the New Testament,

  672. we see this at the baptism.

  673. You see the same words.

  674. The Father says,

  675. this is my son

  676. with whom I am well pleased.

  677. And the Spirit descends upon him.

  678. So you can picture with Aaron,

  679. Moses pouring oil

  680. over Aaron's head and beard.

  681. That was anointing Aaron

  682. for the office of priest.

  683. You can picture David,

  684. that sunburnt shepherd boy,

  685. coming to Samuel,

  686. Samuel anointing him with oil.

  687. There's the king and the priest.

  688. And then the prophets

  689. were anointed by the Holy Spirit,

  690. and they declared

  691. the counsel of God.

  692. So here you see,

  693. it's God himself,

  694. anointed by God for creation.

  695. Three times anointed,

  696. prophet, priest, and king.

  697. Revealing to the world

  698. who this God is.

  699. And notice the promise

  700. between the Father and the Son

  701. in verse 8.

  702. Ask of me,

  703. and I shall give thee the heathen,

  704. the pagan nations,

  705. for thine inheritance,

  706. and the uttermost parts

  707. parts of the earth

  708. for thy possession.

  709. They will be yours.

  710. So are you telling me

  711. that the Father

  712. promised to the Son

  713. this eternal decree

  714. that would come to pass,

  715. that the Son would inherit

  716. and have as his possession

  717. souls from the ends of the earth?

  718. Is that only just found in Psalm 2?

  719. And where do we get

  720. such a rich teaching?

  721. Isaiah 49.6 is one other

  722. glorious place of many more.

  723. Isaiah 49.6 says,

  724. It is a light thing

  725. that thou should be my servant

  726. and raise up to the tribes of Jacob

  727. and to restore and preserve Israel.

  728. See, the Father says to the Son,

  729. Yes,

  730. you will be my servant,

  731. my suffering servant,

  732. and I'll give you restored Israel.

  733. But that's too light of a thing.

  734. That's too small.

  735. The Father promises the Son

  736. in Isaiah 49,

  737. I will also give thee

  738. for a light to the Gentiles

  739. that you may be my salvation

  740. unto the ends of the earth.

  741. That's what the Father promises the Son.

  742. Isn't this glorious?

  743. This is one of my favorite doctrines

  744. in all the Bible.

  745. So this is what has been called

  746. or tried to be understood

  747. as the covenant of redemption

  748. or the counsel of peace,

  749. the eternal decree of God

  750. outside of time.

  751. that the world would have souls

  752. belonging to Jesus

  753. from every nation, tribe, and tongue.

  754. The covenant of redemption.

  755. Okay, well, what's a covenant?

  756. My favorite definition of a covenant

  757. is by Nehemiah Cox,

  758. one of the signers

  759. of the Second London Confession.

  760. Nehemiah Cox says,

  761. It's God's oath-bound promise

  762. declaring the benefits

  763. that God will bestow upon people,

  764. the communion they will have with Him,

  765. the way, the method,

  766. or the means of grace

  767. by which these blessings

  768. will be enjoyed by the people

  769. according to God's sovereign pleasure.

  770. Covenant of redemption.

  771. It's God establishing,

  772. here's how I will bless sinners.

  773. Here's how I will create a way

  774. for those who are banished in darkness

  775. to come and fellowship with me.

  776. And it will be through Israel

  777. because from Israel

  778. I'll raise up my anointed.

  779. But it will be for the ends

  780. of the earth.

  781. Now verse 9,

  782. when a king is established,

  783. he also has to deal with his enemies.

  784. He has to deal with his borders.

  785. Look at verse 9.

  786. Thou shalt break them

  787. with a rod of iron

  788. and thou shalt dash them

  789. into pieces

  790. like a potter's vessel.

  791. The image here is of power

  792. and complete dominion.

  793. So you picture a king,

  794. especially a king like David

  795. who's a man of war,

  796. a man, you know,

  797. covered in blood.

  798. And he holds now

  799. from the throne a rod.

  800. And this rod he will use

  801. to lift up like a scepter.

  802. And this rod he can strike,

  803. you know,

  804. like a shepherd would strike away

  805. the wolves coming to get his lambs.

  806. And he says,

  807. when he strikes you with this rod,

  808. it's a rod of iron.

  809. It will crush

  810. whatever is in its way.

  811. It's stronger than

  812. all the other metals

  813. of the Middle East.

  814. In this time period,

  815. it's of iron.

  816. Nothing breaks

  817. the rod of this king.

  818. And you picture

  819. taking some, you know,

  820. handmade pottery

  821. and just smashing it down

  822. on a rock.

  823. That's the image

  824. of the enemies

  825. of this anointed king.

  826. And that's the decree

  827. of the father

  828. promising to the son.

  829. So do you see now

  830. on this holy hill

  831. the world loving son

  832. being promised

  833. the uttermost parts

  834. of the earth

  835. as his possession,

  836. his inheritance.

  837. Let that be your comfort.

  838. Let that be your comfort

  839. that his church

  840. will prevail.

  841. It's the church militant

  842. marching forward.

  843. And yes,

  844. the world rages against God

  845. and the world

  846. is full of injustice.

  847. But we continue trusting

  848. in this God

  849. who is powerful

  850. and he's caring

  851. and he hates sin

  852. and one day

  853. he will make

  854. all things right.

  855. Hear over and over

  856. this decree,

  857. this promise

  858. and trust

  859. that God spoke it

  860. and it will happen.

  861. So that's why

  862. we can rejoice

  863. with trembling

  864. if we take refuge

  865. in him.

  866. Be sure to be found

  867. inside his kingdom.

  868. All right,

  869. well what about

  870. the fourth scene now?

  871. Verses 10, 11, and 12.

  872. I believe what happens

  873. in this fourth scene

  874. is,

  875. if I get this right,

  876. otherwise tell me later,

  877. it's called

  878. breaking the fourth wall.

  879. So you picture like

  880. on the stage,

  881. you don't want to have

  882. four walls up, right?

  883. Because then the audience

  884. can't peek into the room.

  885. So that fourth wall

  886. is when someone

  887. on the stage

  888. turns directly

  889. to the audience

  890. and addresses them.

  891. I think that's what happens

  892. in verses 10, 11, and 12.

  893. The psalmist declares

  894. as God's prophet

  895. to all nations,

  896. rulers, and individuals

  897. the only wise way

  898. to respond

  899. to the reality

  900. of God's kingdom.

  901. See what the Holy Spirit

  902. has shown the psalmist,

  903. now he takes

  904. what he is seeing

  905. and he declares it

  906. to the world,

  907. to all the rulers

  908. of all the nations

  909. directly.

  910. So in scene four,

  911. there is no refuge

  912. from heaven's king

  913. but blessed

  914. are those

  915. who take refuge

  916. in him.

  917. There is no refuge

  918. from him.

  919. Take refuge

  920. in him.

  921. Verse 10,

  922. Be wise now,

  923. therefore,

  924. O ye kings,

  925. be instructed,

  926. ye judges

  927. of the earth.

  928. He says,

  929. this is God's creation.

  930. God rules

  931. all nations.

  932. They're all

  933. under his law.

  934. Verse 11,

  935. Serve the Lord

  936. with fear

  937. and rejoice

  938. with trembling.

  939. Serve the Lord.

  940. Lord,

  941. learn from his law.

  942. Learn from his people

  943. how to worship him.

  944. Learn from other safe sinners

  945. what it means

  946. to bend your knee,

  947. to submit to his terms

  948. and to find peace.

  949. Verse 12,

  950. Kiss the Son,

  951. lest he be angry

  952. and you perish

  953. from the way

  954. when his wrath

  955. is kindled

  956. but a little.

  957. Kiss the Son.

  958. Until even recent times,

  959. an ambassador

  960. to another country

  961. would have to come

  962. and ceremonially

  963. bow down

  964. and kiss the foot

  965. of the king.

  966. Then they could go

  967. with that king's authority.

  968. First,

  969. that submission

  970. to the great king.

  971. Then on behalf

  972. of that king,

  973. go out

  974. to declare

  975. and to rule

  976. on his behalf.

  977. Kiss the king,

  978. lest he be angry

  979. and you perish

  980. from the way

  981. when his wrath

  982. is kindled

  983. but a little.

  984. See,

  985. there is a time

  986. where his wrath

  987. will be kindled fully.

  988. There is a time

  989. of coming judgment.

  990. His kingdom

  991. is advancing

  992. and his kingdom

  993. advances

  994. spiritually now.

  995. One day

  996. it will advance

  997. and be here

  998. consummately,

  999. fully and forever.

  1000. And we long

  1001. for that day,

  1002. don't we?

  1003. But his kingdom

  1004. is advancing.

  1005. He hates sin.

  1006. No more let sins

  1007. and sorrows grow

  1008. nor thorns

  1009. infest the ground.

  1010. He comes to make

  1011. his blessings flow

  1012. far as the curse

  1013. is found.

  1014. He will restore

  1015. all nations

  1016. to the ends

  1017. of the earth.

  1018. Don't fear the wicked,

  1019. the psalmist says.

  1020. Their pride,

  1021. it's in vain.

  1022. It's empty.

  1023. Their plans

  1024. are foolish.

  1025. But instead,

  1026. hear God's

  1027. holy decree.

  1028. The psalmist

1029. looks you in the eye.

  1030. He says,

  1031. kiss the sun.

  1032. Rejoice with trembling.

  1033. Serve the Lord.

  1034. Rejoice with trembling

  1035. at the holy king

  1036. and take refuge

  1037. in him

  1038. for there is

  1039. no refuge

  1040. from him.

  1041. And that's how

  1042. this psalm ends.

  1043. Now, we've looked

  1044. at the four scenes

  1045. of this psalm.

  1046. I wrestled

  1047. just as much

  1048. with the significance

  1049. of this psalm

  1050. as I did with

  1051. getting the scenes

  1052. correct.

  1053. I believe there are

  1054. many layers

  1055. of significance here.

1056. I just want to walk you

  1057. through a few conclusions

  1058. I've come to.

  1059. The first is

  1060. the significance

  1061. of Psalm 2

  1062. in its immediate context

1063. for life in the land,

  1064. life in the kingdom

  1065. of God.

  1066. He says,

1067. I have set my king

  1068. upon the holy hill

  1069. of Zion.

  1070. So the immediate audience

  1071. would have pictured

  1072. David

  1073. and the Davidic dynasty

  1074. sitting on the throne

  1075. in Jerusalem.

  1076. The first reference

  1077. in the Bible

  1078. to Zion

  1079. is in 2 Samuel 5-7.

  1080. We're told that

  1081. the stronghold of Zion

  1082. was taken over

  1083. by David.

  1084. It belonged previously

  1085. to the Jebusites.

  1086. Dale Ralph Davis

  1087. pointed out

  1088. that Zion

  1089. was a puny

  1090. 11 acres

  1091. of real estate

  1092. on the southeastern ridge

  1093. of Jerusalem

  1094. and God's visible kingdom

  1095. in this world

  1096. was to begin

  1097. on this tiny

  1098. banana-shaped hill

  1099. in a provincial backwater

  1100. that David took

  1101. from the Jebusites.

  1102. But that term,

  1103. Zion,

  1104. this hill of Zion,

  1105. it takes on rich

  1106. biblical theological meaning

  1107. throughout the revelation

  1108. of Scripture.

  1109. So the immediate audience

  1110. would have found hope

  1111. that even though

  1112. these other nations

  1113. are coming against us,

  1114. God will raise up

  1115. a nobody like David

1116. and put him on the throne

  1117. and give us peace.

  1118. That would have been

  1119. their immediate way

  1120. of reading Psalm 2.

  1121. Did this happen?

  1122. Because if God

  1123. can't even deliver

  1124. a yes

  1125. to that original promise

  1126. on that small scale,

  1127. why should we have

  1128. hope in anything further?

  1129. Yes,

  1130. God fulfilled His promise.

  1131. 1 Chronicles 18.11

  1132. says,

  1133. The Lord gave David

  1134. victory

  1135. everywhere he went.

  1136. And David conquered

  1137. the gold and silver

1138. from all these other nations,

1139. brought them back to Zion

  1140. and presented them

  1141. as an offering

  1142. to the Lord,

  1143. set aside

  1144. for the construction

  1145. of the Lord's temple.

  1146. What were the nations

  1147. that he conquered?

  1148. It was Edom,

  1149. Moab,

  1150. the Ammonites,

  1151. the Philistines,

  1152. and the Amalek.

  1153. Any one of those

  1154. in previous times

  1155. would have dominated Israel.

  1156. Now the Lord,

  1157. through David,

  1158. brought peace

  1159. on all edges

  1160. of the border.

  1161. This continues on.

  1162. I believe that David

  1163. was a level one

  1164. fulfillment of this promise

  1165. and David is also

  1166. a shadow of Christ

  1167. in his suffering,

  1168. coming to be

  1169. the bloody warrior shepherd.

  1170. Now Solomon

  1171. is paired with David.

  1172. Scripture comes in pairs.

  1173. You got Elijah, Elisha.

  1174. And so David came

  1175. as the bloody one.

  1176. And now Solomon

  1177. comes as like

  1178. the ascended Lord

  1179. coming to dominate

1180. in the time of peace,

  1181. his second coming,

1182. and also his spiritual kingdom.

  1183. 1 Kings 4.21 says,

  1184. During his reign,

  1185. Solomon,

  1186. the son of David,

  1187. controlled the trade routes

  1188. coming out of Edom,

  1189. Arabia,

  1190. India,

  1191. Africa,

  1192. and Judea.

  1193. So yes,

1194. did the Lord fulfill this

  1195. to their immediate context?

  1196. He did.

  1197. With David,

  1198. with Solomon,

  1199. all of their borders

  1200. were fortified.

  1201. God raised them up,

  1202. brought them peace.

  1203. He ruled and crushed

  1204. their neighbors

  1205. to demonstrate his power.

  1206. God kept his word.

  1207. However,

  1208. all of the promises

1209. that are put on this

  1210. anointed one

1211. that will sit on Zion's hill,

  1212. they're not fully met

  1213. and fully fulfilled

  1214. by David and Solomon

  1215. yet either,

  1216. are they?

  1217. We know that

  1218. from world history,

  1219. Solomon,

  1220. though he constructed

  1221. a temple

  1222. and he built this

  1223. web of alliances

1224. through a lot of marriages

  1225. to different princesses

  1226. and concubines.

  1227. He also introduced

  1228. into the promised land,

  1229. into this kingdom

  1230. of God on earth,

  1231. insurrections,

  1232. dissent,

  1233. division.

  1234. He allowed idols

1235. from all these pagan nations

  1236. to come in

  1237. to corrupt the integrity

  1238. of God's people.

  1239. They turned away

  1240. from the Lord

  1241. and from his law

1242. and it was all downhill

  1243. after Solomon.

  1244. David's divinic dynasty,

  1245. it ended

  1246. with the conquering

  1247. of Jerusalem

  1248. by Babylon

  1249. in the year 586 B.C.

  1250. So that fulfillment

  1251. leaves the rest

  1252. of redemptive history

  1253. asking,

  1254. where is this promise

  1255. going to happen?

  1256. Think of those

  1257. living in Jerusalem

  1258. like Daniel

  1259. and his friends.

1260. They would have been asking,

  1261. how will Psalm 2

  1262. be fulfilled?

1263. They would have been able

  1264. to turn to Isaiah 28, 16

  1265. and read,

  1266. Behold,

1267. I am laying in Zion

  1268. a stone of stumbling,

  1269. a rock of offense.

  1270. Whoever believes in him

1271. will not be put to shame.

1272. And they would have held

1273. to hold on to that.

1274. God will put a king

  1275. back in Zion

1276. and whoever puts their hope

  1277. in my promise

  1278. through that Davidic king

1279. will not be put to shame.

  1280. So the next significance

  1281. of Psalm 2

  1282. would be for those

  1283. carried away

  1284. from Jerusalem and Israel

  1285. into exile.

1286. It would have been sung

1287. for them as a song

  1288. of hope

  1289. while in exile,

  1290. while they were sojourners

  1291. and pilgrims

  1292. without a land.

  1293. God's wrath

  1294. is still against

  1295. those wicked rulers

  1296. who mock their God,

  1297. who view their God

  1298. as weak and defeated.

  1299. They would have had

  1300. to sing Psalm 2

  1301. with that promise

  1302. that no,

  1303. our God does rule

  1304. over these rulers,

  1305. even Nebuchadnezzar,

  1306. even great Assyria.

  1307. They would have said,

  1308. we need to continue

  1309. serving the Lord.

1310. You hear that from Daniel

  1311. when he preaches

  1312. to Nebuchadnezzar,

  1313. he says,

  1314. serve the Lord.

  1315. He sets his king

  1316. on his holy hill.

  1317. He will one day

  1318. do this again.

  1319. We will see him

  1320. in power.

  1321. Listen to how Daniel

  1322. wrote in Daniel 2.35.

  1323. Daniel described

  1324. how the kingdoms

  1325. of the earth

  1326. that were together

  1327. built up into

  1328. this great statue

  1329. were then altogether

  1330. broken in pieces

  1331. and became like

  1332. the chaff

  1333. of the summer

  1334. threshing floors

  1335. and the wind

  1336. carried them away

1337. so that not a trace

1338. of them could be found,

  1339. but the stone

  1340. that struck

  1341. the image,

  1342. this great statue

  1343. became a mountain,

  1344. a great mountain

  1345. filled the whole earth.

1346. Do you hear Psalm 1

  1347. and Psalm 2

  1348. and David's prophecy

  1349. while they're still

  1350. in exile?

  1351. He says,

  1352. lift up your eyes,

  1353. people of God.

  1354. Continue in hope.

1355. He will set his king

  1356. on his holy hill

  1357. once again.

  1358. Rejoice with trembling,

  1359. not at Nebuchadnezzar

  1360. or Assyria.

  1361. Rejoice in trembling

  1362. that God's decree

  1363. will come to pass.

  1364. They could have sung

  1365. that Christmas song

  1366. that we sing now,

  1367. O come, O come,

  1368. Emmanuel,

  1369. and ransom captive Israel

  1370. that mourns

  1371. in lonely exile here

1372. until the Son of God

  1373. appear.

  1374. Then we can rejoice,

  1375. rejoice,

  1376. Emmanuel shall come

  1377. to thee,

  1378. O Israel.

  1379. Rejoice with trembling

  1380. and have hope

  1381. while you're still

  1382. in exile.

  1383. Well, the third

  1384. significance then

  1385. from Psalm 2

  1386. is for life

  1387. in Christ's

  1388. inaugurated kingdom.

1389. What do I mean by that?

  1390. We're told

  1391. in the Gospels

  1392. that all power

  1393. and all authority

  1394. have been given

  1395. to Jesus Christ.

  1396. He already has

  1397. all power

  1398. and all authority.

  1399. But then we read

1400. in a lot of places

  1401. like Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  1402. there still remains

  1403. a rest

1404. that is yet to come.

1405. It's not fully here yet.

1406. So the term we use

  1407. is His kingdom.

  1408. It's already

  1409. but not yet.

  1410. It's already inaugurated

  1411. but not yet

  1412. consummated.

1413. So we are in that

  1414. stage now,

  1415. the same stage

  1416. as the church

1417. in the book of Acts

  1418. that we read

  1419. just a moment ago.

  1420. Jesus said

  1421. in John

    John 12:15

  1422. chapter 12

  1423. verse 15,

  1424. Fear not,

  1425. daughter of Zion.

  1426. Behold,

  1427. your king is coming

  1428. sitting on a donkey's colt.

  1429. He promised them

  1430. be ready,

  1431. be ready,

  1432. daughters of Zion.

  1433. Be ready,

1434. people of God's holy hill.

  1435. Your king is coming.

  1436. And when Jesus

  1437. entered Jerusalem,

  1438. He was fulfilling

  1439. this inaugurated kingdom.

  1440. But He entered Jerusalem

1441. to lay down His life.

  1442. He went to Zion

  1443. to lay down

1444. the blood of the Savior

  1445. to ransom captive

  1446. not only Israel

  1447. but all the ends

  1448. of the earth.

  1449. And this brings us

1450. then to the early church.

  1451. God pours out

  1452. the Holy Spirit

  1453. on His church

  1454. in Acts 2.

1455. And we read in Acts 4

  1456. like we saw today

  1457. that Peter and John

  1458. had a display

  1459. of God's power

  1460. in the early church

  1461. and for that disruption

  1462. they were arrested.

  1463. Here's the rulers

  1464. of the earth

  1465. mounting in power

  1466. against the church,

  1467. against the anointed

  1468. and His people.

1469. And while they were arrested

  1470. and they come back

  1471. and they tell of

  1472. this great deliverance,

  1473. notice what happens.

  1474. It's the church

  1475. gathers all together

  1476. and they pray.

1477. They pray what we read earlier

  1478. and they pray

  1479. through Psalm chapter 2.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

1480. See how we're to pray

  1481. the Psalms?

  1482. Did you catch that

  1483. when we read that?

1484. This is from Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1485. They read,

1486. Acts 4 goes on to say,

1487. For truly in this city

  1488. there were gathered together

1489. against your holy servant Jesus

  1490. whom you anointed.

1491. Acts 4 interprets Psalm 2 for us.

  1492. For Jesus now

  1493. while they're being persecuted

  1494. and as they pray,

  1495. in church,

1496. we need to pray more.

1497. When we come back together

  1498. in August,

  1499. that needs to be

1500. the heartbeat of what we do.

  1501. They prayed together

  1502. in one accord

  1503. through Psalm 2

  1504. and we're told

  1505. there was an earthquake.

1506. That's how much it rattled

  1507. the kingdom of heaven

  1508. right here.

  1509. This little church,

  1510. they're praying.

  1511. The earth shook.

  1512. God comforted them.

  1513. He says,

  1514. I am with you.

1515. Both Herod and Pontius Pilate

  1516. along with the Gentiles

1517. and the people of Israel,

  1518. they may do whatever.

  1519. All they do,

1520. it's only whatever your hand

  1521. and your plan

  1522. had predestined

  1523. to take place.

  1524. That's what the church

  1525. prays in Acts 4.

  1526. So now Lord,

  1527. look upon their threats

1528. and grant to your servants

  1529. to continue to speak

  1530. your word with boldness.

1531. Do you see the application

1532. of Psalm 2 for the church?

1533. While we are in His

  1534. spiritually inaugurated kingdom,

1535. longing for His consummate kingdom,

  1536. Israel had the promise.

  1537. We now, the church

  1538. with the Holy Spirit,

  1539. we have the fulfillment.

1540. Israel had David and Solomon.

  1541. We church,

  1542. we have Jesus Christ,

  1543. God Himself.

  1544. Israel had earthly Zion.

  1545. We have heavenly Zion.

  1546. Christ is ascended.

  1547. He is enthroned.

1548. He is raised from the dead

  1549. in His glorified body

1550. and He rules over the earth.

  1551. We sing,

  1552. Mine are days here

  1553. as a stranger,

1554. pilgrim on the narrow way.

  1555. One with Christ,

  1556. I will encounter harm

1557. and hatred for His name.

  1558. But,

1559. Mine is armor for this battle,

1560. strong enough to last the war.

  1561. And He has said,

  1562. He will deliver safely

  1563. to the golden shore.

  1564. Jesus Christ reigns.

  1565. We are His militant,

  1566. persecuted church on earth,

1567. but our King reigns from heaven.

  1568. 1 Corinthians 15, 25 says,

  1569. Christ must rule

1570. until He puts all enemies

  1571. under His control.

  1572. Do you see that?

  1573. Christ must rule

1574. until He puts all His enemies

  1575. under His control.

  1576. He is ruling,

1577. but yet He is putting His enemies

  1578. under His control.

1579. That's how you can have hope

  1580. and happiness

1581. in a world that rages against God.

1582. You look again and again

  1583. to His Holy Son

1584. on the hill of Zion in heaven,

  1585. His anointed King,

1586. and you heed His warning.

  1587. Rejoice with trembling.

  1588. The Holy King reigns.

  1589. Take refuge in Him.

1590. Well, the fourth significance here

  1591. from Psalm 2

1592. is the coming of Christ's

  1593. consummate kingdom.

  1594. Jesus tells the parable

  1595. in Luke 19, 12,

1596. that can be hard to understand,

  1597. but listen to this

1598. in light of Psalm 2.

  1599. This is Luke 19, verse 12.

    Luke 19:12

  1600. A nobleman went into

  1601. a far country

  1602. to receive for himself

  1603. a kingdom

  1604. and then return.

  1605. This is Jesus' parable.

1606. But His citizens hated Him

1607. and sent a delegation after Him

  1608. saying,

1609. we do not want this man

  1610. to reign over us.

  1611. There's scene one.

  1612. When He returned,

  1613. having received the kingdom,

  1614. He ordered these servants

  1615. to give account

1616. and to pay their dues.

  1617. Verse 10 of Psalm 2.

  1618. Be wise now,

  1619. therefore,

  1620. O ye kings,

  1621. be instructed,

1622. ye judges of the earth.

1623. There is a day of reckoning

  1624. that's coming.

  1625. Psalm 2, verse 9.

    Psalms 2:9

  1626. He will break them

1627. with a rod of iron.

  1628. He will dash them

  1629. into pieces

  1630. like a potter's vessel.

  1631. There is no refuge

  1632. from Him.

  1633. Be wise.

  1634. Serve the Lord.

  1635. In his final sermon

  1636. of his life,

  1637. the medical doctor

  1638. turned preacher,

  1639. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  1640. in London,

1641. this was the sermon text

  1642. he preached

  1643. up in Scotland.

  1644. Many still remember

1645. and were moved to tears.

1646. This is this old man

  1647. calling all

  1648. to serve the Lord,

  1649. rejoice with trembling,

  1650. kiss the sun.

1651. And that's how he made sense

  1652. of the Great Depression,

  1653. the two world wars,

1654. the misery of billions of people.

1655. This is but the wrath of God

  1656. kindled but a little.

  1657. The world hangs

  1658. like on that bungee,

1659. the spiky rocks down below.

  1660. The Lord is preserving

  1661. this world

1662. but for how much longer?

1663. Take refuge in Him now.

  1664. His consummate kingdom

  1665. is coming.

  1666. Romans 2, 5 says,

  1667. Because of your hard

  1668. and impenitent heart,

  1669. you are storing up

  1670. wrath for yourself

1671. on the day of wrath

  1672. when God's righteous judgment

  1673. will be revealed.

  1674. You'll either get

  1675. eternal life

1676. or you'll get the wrath

  1677. and fury

  1678. of a holy God

  1679. who will set

  1680. all things right.

  1681. There will be tribulation

  1682. and distress

  1683. for every person

  1684. who does evil,

  1685. says Romans 2.

1686. So how does Christ do this?

  1687. How does His kingdom

  1688. come on earth?

  1689. One of our catechisms

  1690. answers it this way.

  1691. How does Christ execute

  1692. the office of king?

  1693. Christ executes

  1694. the office of king

  1695. in subduing us

  1696. to Himself,

  1697. in ruling

  1698. and defending us,

  1699. and in restraining

  1700. and conquering

  1701. all of our enemies?

  1702. What type of king

  1703. is Jesus

  1704. as He reigns now

  1705. from heaven?

1706. What is promised to us

  1707. about this king?

  1708. Psalm 110, verse 3 says,

    Psalms 110:3

  1709. Your people,

  1710. Your people

  1711. will offer themselves

  1712. freely

1713. on the day of Your power

  1714. in holy garments.

  1715. His people stand

  1716. washed by His blood

  1717. in holy garments

  1718. before Him

  1719. as free,

  1720. grateful offerings.

  1721. It's their reasonable

  1722. service to Him.

  1723. That's the significance

  1724. of Psalm 2

  1725. for us today, church.

  1726. The psalmist urges you,

  1727. Rejoice with trembling.

  1728. Be wise.

  1729. Be warned.

1730. Serve the Lord with fear.

  1731. Serve the Lord,

1732. captain of the sports team.

  1733. Serve the Lord, teachers.

1734. Serve the Lord, mom and dads.

  1735. Serve the Lord, managers.

  1736. Be wise.

  1737. Fear the Lord.

1738. A day of reckoning is coming.

1739. Serve the Lord, older siblings.

  1740. Serve the Lord, grandparents.

1741. You will give account one day.

1742. Serve the Lord, deacons and pastors.

  1743. Rejoice with trembling.

  1744. Kiss the Son,

  1745. lest He be angry

1746. and you perish by the way.

  1747. Revelation 4, 2

  1748. gives us one other

  1749. apostle's view

  1750. of the heavenly realm.

1751. Here's how the apostle John

  1752. describes Christ

  1753. seated on His throne.

  1754. He says,

1755. Behold, a throne stood in heaven

1756. with one seated on the throne.

  1757. From the throne

  1758. came flashes of lightning,

  1759. rumblings,

  1760. peals of thunder.

1761. And there's the heavenly court

  1762. and a countless host

1763. before the King of Kings

  1764. declaring,

  1765. Holy, holy, holy

1766. is the Lord God Almighty

  1767. who was

  1768. and is

  1769. and is

  1770. to come.

  1771. And that's our cry.

  1772. Christ exalted

  1773. is our song.

1774. And we do this together.

  1775. This journey ours together

  1776. into that great forever.

  1777. We're almost home.

  1778. What song

  1779. anew we'll sing

  1780. round that happy throne.

  1781. Come, faint of heart,

  1782. we are almost home.

1783. There was a very wealthy man

  1784. who collected classical paintings

  1785. worth millions,

  1786. every painting,

  1787. and his mansion

  1788. was filled with them.

  1789. His son had gotten

  1790. caught off to war

1791. and one of the men

  1792. in the trenches

1793. drew a sketch of his son,

  1794. his friend there aboard

  1795. and he respected him.

  1796. He had mailed

  1797. that little sketch,

  1798. that little portrait

  1799. back to the father,

  1800. this wealthy man

  1801. with the mansion.

  1802. When the man

  1803. and his wife died,

1804. he had a very simple will.

  1805. Everyone came,

  1806. the wealthiest people,

  1807. you know,

  1808. from all the corners

  1809. of the earth

  1810. to try to bid

1811. on each one of these pieces,

  1812. these paintings.

  1813. The first one

  1814. was this simple

  1815. little hand-drawn portrait

1816. of the wealthy man's son.

  1817. No one wanted

  1818. to take a bid.

  1819. $50,

  1820. we'll drop it down,

  1821. $25.

  1822. $1,

  1823. anyone?

  1824. Finally,

  1825. someone took it.

  1826. Get things going.

  1827. And then the auctioneer,

  1828. let them know,
