  1. help, we'll be having six or seven sermons now on a new series called Life in the Father's House.

  2. As we saw in Sunday school, this is a reference to what Jesus promised in John chapter 14. He said,

    John 14 chapter mention

  3. in my Father's house are many rooms, and I'm going to prepare a place for you, that where I am,

  4. there you may also be. And he says, I'm not leaving you as orphans. My Holy Spirit is with you.

  5. And we'll see in Ephesians what else he says about this glorious promise. So biblical church,

  6. Life in the Father's House. And our sermon text today is Ephesians chapter 1, starting at verse 3.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  7. It's a longer passage. We're going to go all the way through chapter 2, verse 10.

  8. As I read this, remember, this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  9. This is God's very own word for you, his people. So when I'm done with the reading of scripture,

  10. I'll say, this is the word of God, and you can respond with joy and gratitude. Thanks be to God.

  11. Ephesians 1, starting at verse 3.

  12. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  13. who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in the heavenly places in Christ.

  14. According as he has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world,

  15. that we should be holy and without blame before him in love,

  16. having predestined us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself,

  17. according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace,

  18. wherein he has made us accepted in the beloved.

  19. Verse 7.

  20. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,

  21. according to the riches of his grace, wherein he has abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence,

  22. having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure,

  23. which he has purposed in himself.

  24. Verse 10.

  25. That in the dispensation of the fullness of times,

  26. he might gather together in one all things in Christ,

  27. both which are in heaven and which are on earth, even in him,

  28. in whom also we have obtained an inheritance,

  29. being predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things after the counsel of his own will,

  30. that we should be to the praise of his glory,

  31. who first trusted in Christ,

  32. in whom you also trusted after you heard the word of truth,

  33. the gospel of your salvation,

  34. in whom after that you believed you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise.

  35. Verse 14.

  36. Which is the earnest of our inheritance

  37. until the redemption of the purchased possession

  38. unto the praise of his glory.

  39. Wherefore I also,

  40. after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus

  41. and love unto all the saints,

  42. cease not to give thanks for you,

  43. making mention of you in my prayers,

  44. that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  45. the Father of glory,

  46. may give unto you the spirit of wisdom

  47. and revelation in the knowledge of him.

  48. Verse 18.

  49. The eyes of your understanding being enlightened,

  50. that you may know what is the hope of his calling,

  51. and what are the riches of his glory

  52. and his inheritance in the saints.

  53. That is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe,

  54. according to the working of his mighty power,

  55. which he wrought in Christ,

  56. when he raised him from the dead

  57. and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

  58. far above all principality and power

  59. and might and dominion

  60. and every name that is named,

  61. not only in this world,

  62. but also in that which is to come.

  63. And he has put all things under his feet

  64. and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

  65. which is his body,

  66. the fullness of him that filled up all in all.

  67. Chapter 2.

  68. And you,

  69. he has quickened,

  70. who were dead in trespasses and sins,

  71. wherein in time past you walked

  72. according to the course of this world,

  73. according to the prince of the power of the air,

  74. the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience,

  75. among whom also we had our conversation in time past,

  76. in the lusts of the flesh,

  77. fulfilling the desires of the flesh

  78. and of the mind,

  79. and were by nature the children of wrath,

  80. even as others.

  81. Verse 4.

  82. But God,

  83. who is rich in mercy,

  84. for his great love,

  85. wherein he loved us,

  86. even we who were dead in sins,

  87. he has quickened us together with Christ.

  88. By grace,

  89. you are saved.

  90. And he has raised us up together

  91. and made us sit together

  92. in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

  93. That is,

  94. in the age to come

  95. that he might show the exceeding riches of his grace

  96. in his kindness toward us through Jesus Christ.

  97. For by grace you are saved through faith,

  98. and that is not of yourselves,

  99. it is the gift of God.

  100. Not of works,

  101. lest any man should boast.

  102. For we are his workmanship,

  103. created in Christ Jesus,

  104. unto good works,

  105. which God has before ordained,

  106. that we should walk in them.

  107. This is the word of the Lord.

  108. Thanks be to God.

  109. Thanks be to God.

  110. You may be seated.

  111. We read in Isaiah 40

  112. that the grass withers and the flower fades,

  113. but the word of the Lord,

  114. it endures forever.

  115. Would you pray with me?

  116. Amen.

  117. Amen.

  118. Oh Lord,

  119. cause us to behold Jesus Christ

  120. and by seeing the work of Christ

  121. as our mediator,

  122. to understand

  123. and to personally know

  124. this great mystery

  125. of our salvation

  126. so that you will be glorified

  127. in our lives,

  128. we pray.

  129. Amen.

  130. Amen.

  131. Amen.

  132. Amen.

  133. Amen.

  134. Amen.

  135. Amen.

  136. Well, beloved congregation

  137. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  138. I invite you today

  139. to ponder

  140. your wondrous adoption.

  141. To ponder

  142. means to consider,

  143. to contemplate,

  144. to bask

  145. in your wondrous adoption.

  146. Wondrous,

  147. it means exceeding

  148. and surprising good.

  149. inspiring a feeling of wonder and delight.

  150. That's what this glorious passage that Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus does.

  151. It causes us to ponder our wondrous adoption.

  152. Well, he says this in verse 5, chapter 1, verse 5,

  153. that you were predestined by God to be adopted in Christ.

  154. That's what he says to you who believe.

  155. And the metaphor of adoption itself, it gets our attention.

  156. It reminds you that had God not adopted you, look what you would have been.

  157. The musical Annie describes a life before adoption.

  158. The children in the orphanage, they say,

  159. Don't it feel like the wind is always howling?

  160. Don't it seem like there's never any light?

  161. Once a day, don't you want to throw the towel in?

  162. It's easier than putting up a fight.

  163. Empty belly life, rotten, smelly life, full of sorrow life, no tomorrow life.

  164. But Paul takes the church in Ephesus and says,

  165. God predestined that you be adopted in Christ by God the Father.

  166. That's not the type of life for you.

  167. You get life in the Father's house.

  168. That's what you get.

  169. See, the Roman world had a very large percentage of their social demographic

  170. that were orphans and slaves that were neglected.

  171. So the church of Ephesus had a really weird mix.

  172. You had slaves as part of the congregation.

  173. You had literal orphans that were being brought in by the members of the church.

  174. But Ephesus as a city was the wealthiest hub of Asia Minor.

  175. And much of the wealth of Ephesus was kept at the temple of Diana.

  176. So this temple was a place of horrible sin and vulgarity,

  177. all kinds of pagan idolatry.

  178. But it was also the treasury for the city of Ephesus

  179. and really the financial capital of Asia Minor.

  180. So within this church were those that were very successful in commerce,

  181. and you had this great diversity within this little body.

  182. There were some who were Jewish descent.

  183. There were many who were Gentiles.

  184. And Paul is writing to them from prison.

  185. And the reason Paul is in prison is because he went out to take the gospel to the world,

  186. to people like them.

  187. If you've been neglected, hurt, or abused by a church,

  188. then you need to hear what Paul says in this letter to the church in Ephesus.

  189. If you are still deciding whether you will ever take the risk

  190. of caring very much about people in church again,

  191. then you need to hear what Paul says in this letter to the church in Ephesus.

  192. And if you want to believe that a true biblical church that's fed on Scripture,

  193. that's Spirit-filled, that's owned by Christ himself,

  194. you want to believe that that is possible, maybe even right here,

  195. then let's hear together what Paul writes in this letter to the church in Ephesus.

  196. In this longer passage, I'm going to do my best to not skip any parts.

  197. Five wondrous truths, and then what this means for us on how we need to live.

  198. So number one, ponder with Paul the cause of your adoption.

  199. Ponder the cause of your adoption.

  200. If you are in God's family, if you can say,

  201. I belong to the Father's house, why?

  202. What caused that?

  203. Look at verse 3.

  204. So chapter 1, verse 3.

  205. Paul begins by making it very clear.

  206. Everything he's going to tell them about church,

  207. it's to bring glory to one God.

  208. Who gets all the glory in the church?

  209. Look how he starts off.

  210. Chapter 1, verse 3.

  211. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  212. Yes, the church displays all these glorious blessings,

  213. but it's God who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in the heavenly places.

  214. How?

  215. In Christ.

  216. Now the next question is, why?

  217. What is the cause?

  218. Look at verse 4.

  219. According as he has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world,

  220. that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.

  221. He has predestined us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself,

  222. according to the good pleasure of his will,

  223. to the praise of the glory of his grace,

  224. wherein he has made us accepted in the beloved.

  225. When you hear these truths, it truly is heavenly glory.

  226. Because in our flesh, we're a lot like that little orphan Annie, aren't we?

  227. We want to believe that maybe God will like my personality or my charm or the things I can do,

  228. and that's why he'll show me his grace.

  229. Maybe we can cause God to adopt us.

  230. Thomas Brooks, one of the Puritans, he said,

  231. until you have faith in Christ, your best services are but more glorious sins.

  232. You're trying to be saved by your own goodness, by your own good works.

  233. But this glorious passage, it tells us that if you are in God's family,

  234. look again at verse 4.

  235. If you're adopted, it's because God has chosen you in Christ.

  236. Well, when did God do that?

  237. When did God choose you personally?

  238. Was it after God observed enough of me to decide that one's good?

  239. No.

  240. He says in verse 4,

  241. it was before the foundation of the world.

  242. So what does this tell us about God?

  243. God wants you to enter into his holy throne room

  244. and behold him, God the creator of all, Father.

  245. And as you approach his throne room, he speaks to you and he says,

  246. Dear child, because I am love, I made you, look at verse 4,

  247. I made you holy and without blame as you stand here before me.

  248. Verse 5, he answers the objection.

  249. We want to say, hold on God, how can this even be possible?

  250. The creator of all, your adoptive father in Christ.

  251. He smiles at you and look at what he says in verse 4.

  252. You are in God's family because I predestined you,

  253. along with all those in my true church,

  254. unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to myself.

  255. And I did this, this is what it tells us about God.

  256. He says he did this because it was the good pleasure of his will.

  257. Why are you adopted?

  258. What was the cause?

  259. It is the good pleasure of the father's will to adopt you

  260. before you did anything to deserve that.

  261. The question was, ponder the cause of your adoption.

  262. If you are in God's family, why is that?

  263. Well, these verses tell us you were adopted in Christ freely

  264. by God's good pleasure due to no merit of your own.

  265. Some of you, that's what you need to hear this morning.

  266. And that would be enough.

  267. If we can truly embrace that and live in that.

  268. I think for others of us, maybe for myself right now,

  269. I need to remember that about every single Christian here,

  270. but globally, if they belong to Christ,

  271. it's because he showed them love.

  272. He gave them a new heart.

  273. He showed his favor to them and adopted them.

  274. And they stand before him, and I stand before him,

  275. warts and all.

  276. And he says, you are holy and blameless in Christ.

  277. Because I, in my good pleasure,

  278. wanted to adopt you before the foundation of the world.

  279. Ponder the cause of your adoption.

  280. Number two, ponder your hopelessness

  281. if God had left you dead in sin.

  282. Ponder how hopeless you would be

  283. if he had not adopted you who are Christians.

  284. I'm going to have us bounce around a little bit

  285. within this broader passage.

  286. So look at chapter 2, verse 1.

  287. Paul writes to the church,

  288. this mixed church in Ephesus,

  289. and he says,

  290. you, God made alive.

  291. And that verb, that God made you alive,

  292. it could be translated that God quickened you

  293. who were dead.

  294. He regenerated you.

  295. He breathed life over you and into you,

  296. just like we read from Ezekiel 37.

  297. What Paul is saying is that

  298. every person in the church was dead.

  299. We were dead in our trespasses and sins.

  300. Now, notice how powerful was the bondage

  301. before Christ adopted us.

  302. Look at chapter 2, verse 2.

  303. He says,

  304. In time past,

  305. you walked according to the course of this world,

  306. according to the prince of the power of the air,

  307. the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience,

  308. among whom we also had our conversation in times past,

  309. in the lusts of our own flesh,

  310. fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind.

  311. And we were by nature children of wrath,

  312. even as others.

  313. Ponder your life

  314. should God had left you to continue walking in that way.

  315. You're walking without Christ's adoption

  316. in the pattern of the world.

  317. You are blown along

  318. by whatever the godless world loves.

  319. That's steering your path,

  320. and you're fulfilling all those cravings and lusts

  321. of your own flesh.

  322. It's by the walk

  323. that you know

  324. who's your master.

  325. Don't be deceived,

  326. and also don't be hurt

  327. by everything that slaps the label Christian on it.

  328. You can tell by the way they walk.

  329. Francis Schaeffer said,

  330. he said this about those who claim to be Christians

  331. that are whitewashed tombstones.

  332. He said,

  333. there is no such thing as a true church that's worldly.

  334. He says of this, of the fake church,

  335. tell me what the world says now,

  336. and I'll tell you what false professors will say in seven years.

  337. The church, the false church,

  338. is just following the pattern of the world.

  339. They're like a dead fish that just goes with the stream.

  340. As someone said,

  341. only a living fish that's been regenerated,

  342. made alive,

  343. can float against it.

  344. What the world loves

  345. is not neutral, Paul says.

  346. So no matter what the coffee mugs

  347. or the shirts you buy at Target are going to say,

  348. it's not cute.

  349. It's not innocent.

  350. It's manipulated by Satan.

  351. Look at what Paul says here

  352. about the spirit that governs the world in verse 2.

  353. He says,

  354. it's the prince of the power of the air.

  355. And if you are still a slave to sin,

  356. you are a slave to disobedience,

  357. verse 2 says that it is Satan's spirit

  358. that works in you.

  359. You think you're free.

  360. You're a slave to your own sin

  361. and you're a slave to Satan himself.

  362. Let that thought scare you for a moment.

  363. Ponder your hopelessness

  364. if God had left you in that state.

  365. The context and the metaphor in Paul's writing here

  366. is adoption, remember?

  367. Well, I looked this up this week

  368. that the National Foster Youth Institute says,

  369. this is sad.

  370. One out of every two children

  371. in the foster care system

  372. will end up homeless and jobless

  373. once they age out.

  374. If God did not adopt you,

  375. that's the walk you were headed on.

  376. You would be eternally homeless.

  377. Now go back to chapter 1, verse 7.

  378. Paul says,

  379. in Christ,

  380. we have redemption

  381. through His blood.

  382. Chapter 1, verse 7.

  383. How are you redeemed?

  384. It's by the forgiveness of sins

  385. according to the riches of His grace,

  386. wherein He has abounded toward us

  387. in all wisdom and prudence.

  388. In the Roman world,

  389. you could go to the market

  390. and they would put one slave up

  391. after another on the block

  392. and there would be an auction

  393. and the highest bidder gets the slave.

  394. So a human being

  395. had a price tag attached to them.

  396. Now what someone could do

  397. is pay that price,

  398. win the bid,

  399. that slave became their property,

  400. their possession.

  401. And once you had the title

  402. to that slave,

  403. you could release them

  404. and set them free.

  405. When that happened,

  406. that was called being redeemed.

  407. So that person would be considered

  408. a redeemed slave.

  409. Did you see what Paul writes

  410. in chapter 1, verse 7?

  411. He says,

  412. in Christ,

  413. we have redemption.

  414. Well, what was the price?

  415. It was the blood of Jesus

  416. that purchased you.

  417. And Jesus sets you free

  418. from the bondage of Satan

  419. with his precious blood.

  420. Why did God do this?

  421. It's to show you

  422. the riches of God's grace.

  423. He says they are overflowing.

  424. They are abounding.

  425. They abide fully to you

  426. who Christ has purchased.

  427. How could this be possible?

  428. Only by the precious blood

  429. of Jesus Christ himself,

  430. being very God,

  431. took on flesh

  432. to ransom

  433. and to redeem you.

  434. Number three,

  435. ponder

  436. the finality

  437. of this adoption.

  438. Ponder how

  439. this adoption

  440. is done and over.

  441. It's completed.

  442. I just want to walk through

  443. six reasons

  444. in verses 9 through 14.

  445. How is your adoption final?

  446. It's over.

  447. It's already happened.

  448. Number one,

  449. your adoption is final

  450. because God

  451. does not change.

  452. You don't need to fear

  453. God changing his mind

  454. like an earthly father.

  455. God chose you.

  456. He will never unchoose you.

  457. Look at verse 9.

  458. Having made known to us

  459. the mystery of his will

  460. according to his good pleasure,

  461. which he has purposed

  462. in himself.

  463. There's no greater place

  464. to purpose your adoption

  465. than in God's own pleasure.

  466. He will not change.

  467. Number two,

  468. your adoption is final

  469. because it is held

  470. and accomplished

  471. by Christ himself.

  472. To doubt your adoption

  473. is to doubt

  474. whether Christ is capable of it.

  475. Look at verse 10.

  476. That in the fullness of time,

  477. in the dispensation

  478. of the fullness of time,

  479. God might gather together

  480. in one

  481. all things,

  482. notice the next two words,

  483. in Christ,

  484. in heaven

  485. and which are on earth.

  486. And if he needs to say it again,

  487. even in him,

  488. it's all held together

  489. by Christ.

  490. Number three,

  491. your adoption is final

  492. because God adopted you

  493. in Christ already

  494. because he's referring

  495. to your adoption

  496. in the past tense.

  497. It's finished.

  498. It's accomplished.

  499. Look at verse 11.

  500. In Christ,

  501. there it is a third time,

  502. also we have obtained

  503. an inheritance,

  504. being predestined

  505. according to the purpose

  506. of him

  507. who worketh all things

  508. after the counsel

  509. of his own will.

  510. He says in verse 11,

  511. we have obtained.

  512. You already have it.

  513. It is already accomplished

  514. by Christ.

  515. It is already your adoption.

  516. When a child does get adopted,

  517. by a family,

  518. there's a grace celebration

  519. and it's called

  520. their adoption day

  521. and it's often celebrated.

  522. Maybe like a birthday

  523. for years to come

  524. or the whole party,

  525. the whole church

  526. comes together

  527. and celebrates.

  528. Well, Paul is saying,

  529. church,

  530. you have already obtained

  531. your adoption.

  532. Your adoption day

  533. was already accomplished

  534. when the Spirit

  535. applied the work

  536. of Christ to you.

  537. You are adopted

  538. fully and finally.

  539. And when we celebrate

  540. your baptism,

  541. we are celebrating

  542. that fact as a church.

  543. You have been adopted.

  544. The fourth reason

  545. that your adoption

  546. is final

  547. is because it's really

  548. just evidenced

  549. by trusting

  550. in the active present tense,

  551. trusting in God.

  552. Look what he says

  553. in verse 12.

  554. He adopted you

  555. that you should be

  556. to the praise

  557. of his glory.

  558. Who is he talking about?

  559. He's talking about

  560. those who first

  561. trusted in Christ.

  562. Yes, there is a moment

  563. in time

  564. when you did not

  565. trust in God,

  566. now you first

  567. trust in him.

  568. But look at what he says

  569. continuing on

  570. in verse 13.

  571. In whom you also trusted

  572. after you heard

  573. that the word of truth

  574. and the gospel

  575. of your salvation.

  576. He goes on to say

  577. you continue believing

  578. in the scriptures

  579. as you're taught

  580. by the Holy Spirit.

  581. See, if you are trusting

  582. in Christ right now,

  583. you don't need

  584. to remember that day.

  585. For some of you

  586. it's more of a gradual

  587. looking back on your life.

  588. But you can have assurance

  589. if you are trusting

  590. fully in Christ now,

  591. he has adopted you.

  592. Because if he had not

  593. worked in your heart,

  594. you would not want

  595. to trust him

  596. for your salvation.

  597. And if you are trusting him now,

  598. it should encourage you,

  599. your adoption is final.

  600. You've been adopted.

  601. Number five and six

  602. will confirm this

  603. further for you.

  604. Number five is this,

  605. your adoption is final

  606. because you have

  607. a certificate

  608. or a seal,

  609. like that poured wax

  610. with the signet ring on it.

  611. You have a seal

  612. testifying that you are adopted.

  613. This is in verse 13.

  614. What is that seal?

  615. After you believed,

  616. he says you were,

  617. in the past tense,

  618. you were sealed

  619. with that Holy Spirit

  620. of promise.

  621. You don't need to look

  622. for a future feeling

  623. feeling or a future experience.

  624. If you believed,

  625. you have been sealed already

  626. by the Holy Spirit.

  627. It is accomplished

  628. and applied to you.

  629. And then the sixth reason

  630. that your adoption is final,

  631. it's because the Holy Spirit

  632. in you,

  633. the Holy Spirit inside of you,

  634. it's like an earnest

  635. of your future inheritance.

  636. Look at verse 14.

  637. He says,

  638. This Holy Spirit of promise

  639. is the earnest

  640. of our inheritance

  641. until the redemption

  642. of the purchased possession

  643. unto the praise

  644. of his glory.

  645. There will be a great day

  646. when our Lord Jesus

  647. descends with the army

  648. of angels from heaven.

  649. And what we believe

  650. by faith spiritually

  651. is accomplished now,

  652. he will reveal

  653. this is finally,

  654. physically,

  655. consummately real.

  656. The kingdom of heaven

  657. is fully on this earth.

  658. And until then,

  659. he's left his Holy Spirit

  660. dwelling inside you individually

  661. who believe in us

  662. as a body,

  663. as a further encouragement

  664. that you are adopted.

  665. This picture of an earnest

  666. or a deposit,

  667. I think it's best illustrated

  668. with a young man

  669. who wants to marry

  670. a young lady.

  671. And so what does he give her?

  672. The engagement ring.

  673. Expensive diamond

  674. made of gold

  675. and it goes on the finger

  676. until that day

  677. where they will be married.

  678. But in that meantime,

  679. she has that ring

  680. to remind her

  681. of his great love.

  682. She has that deposit,

  683. that earnest.

  684. Do you see how your adoption

  685. is final

  686. according to these verses?

  687. And because your adoption

  688. is final,

  689. you can live in this world

  690. with boldness.

  691. You no longer will

  692. go with the pattern

  693. of the world.

  694. You will be alive.

  695. You will be going

  696. against the stream.

  697. You will be with

  698. the army of King Jesus

  699. marching out

  700. with faith in the kingdom

  701. to come

  702. no matter what happens

  703. on this earth.

  704. G.K. Chesterton

  705. pointed out,

  706. we don't want,

  707. as the newspapers say,

  708. a church that will move

  709. with the world.

  710. What we want

  711. is a church

  712. that will move

  713. the world.

  714. The church moves

  715. the world

  716. when the church

  717. trusts in Jesus Christ

  718. and follows him.

  719. It's King Jesus

  720. who is storming

  721. the gates of hell

  722. and they will not

  723. prevail against him.

  724. Well, next,

  725. I invite you to ponder

  726. how your adoption

  727. becomes true.

  728. I know this might seem

  729. a little bit out of order,

  730. but I'm trying to follow

  731. the flow of this passage.

  732. And I think it's important

  733. because he's writing

  734. to the church

  735. to begin with,

  736. but he's correcting

  737. probably some wrong

  738. understandings

  739. about how did I get adopted?

  740. Can I know for sure?

  741. Am I saved?

  742. See, some of you

  743. have been regenerated

  744. by the power

  745. of the Holy Spirit,

  746. but you've probably

  747. gotten some confused

  748. teaching over the years.

  749. I know I sure have

  750. about how God

  751. actually adopts people.

  752. And then others of you,

  753. you've been taught right,

  754. but you need to know

  755. for you personally.

  756. I don't need to just know

  757. theoretically in my head.

  758. I need to know

  759. whether I'm adopted.

  760. And this,

  761. I think these next verses

  762. here can really help you

  763. have correct understanding

  764. of how God does this

  765. and reform our thinking

  766. in that way

  767. and also personal assurance.

  768. So how does this adoption

  769. become true for you personally?

  770. Well, let's look at

  771. chapter 1, verse 15.

  772. See, Paul is talking

  773. about the church

  774. and he's thinking about

  775. how they've changed so much.

  776. And he sees evidence

  777. that they have been adopted

  778. by God by their love,

  779. by what's concerning them.

  780. Look at what he says

  781. in verse 15.

  782. After I heard of your faith

  783. in the Lord Jesus,

  784. and your love

  785. unto all the saints.

  786. Verse 16,

  787. Paul says,

  788. now I can't stop

  789. giving thanks to you

  790. and making mention of you

  791. in my prayers.

  792. He sees their love,

  793. now he wants to encourage them.

  794. Just think about

  795. how God saved you,

  796. God adopted you.

  797. Number one,

  798. how does adoption become true?

  799. Well, Paul is praying

  800. for them to know this.

  801. So we pray for adoption

  802. to be true.

  803. And there's that loved one

  804. or that dear friend

  805. or that family member.

  806. You don't know

  807. if they're saved yet.

  808. And you want so much

  809. for them to have that assurance

  810. and that new life in Christ.

  811. Do like Paul.

  812. Remember them always,

  813. making mention of them

  814. in your prayers.

  815. Number two,

  816. trust that it is God

  817. who gives understanding.

  818. Look at verse 17.

  819. The God of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  820. the Father of glory.

  821. Paul is praying

  822. that God himself

  823. may give to them

  824. the spirit of wisdom

  825. and revelation

  826. in the knowledge of him.

  827. See, it's the spirit of God

  828. in verse 18

  829. who opens the eyes

  830. of their understanding.

  831. They were dead and darkened,

  832. but it's the Holy Spirit

  833. who enlightens them.

  834. Ponder how this adoption

  835. becomes true.

  836. Number three,

  837. it becomes true

  838. because God personally

  839. calls you

  840. to know this truth.

  841. Paul writes in verse 18

  842. that you may know,

  843. you personally,

  844. you may know and trust

  845. what is the hope

  846. of Christ's calling

  847. and what the riches

  848. of the glory

  849. of his inheritance

  850. are to you

  851. who he says

  852. are my saints.

  853. It's for you

  854. to personally know that.

  855. Number four,

  856. adoption is accomplished

  857. by God's power.

  858. The same power

  859. that raised Jesus

  860. from the dead.

  861. Look what he says.

  862. Here's evidence

  863. of your belief.

  864. Verse 19,

  865. you need to know

  866. the exceeding greatness

  867. of God's power

  868. toward us who believe

  869. according to the working

  870. of his mighty power

  871. which he wrought

  872. in Christ Jesus.

  873. He's saying,

  874. do you believe in God?

  875. Well, then it's because

  876. God has worked

  877. with such power

  878. in your life

  879. he's caused you

  880. to believe

  881. and it's the same power

  882. he used to raise

  883. his own son

  884. from the dead

  885. to give you newness

  886. of life.

  887. It's that power

  888. that has caused you

  889. to now believe.

  890. So,

  891. the fifth observation

  892. is that your adoption

  893. is just as true

  894. as Christ's resurrection.

  895. God raises you

  896. from spiritual death

  897. unto spiritual life

  898. just as God,

  899. he says,

  900. in verse 20,

  901. God has raised Christ

  902. from the dead

  903. and set him

  904. at his own right hand

  905. in the heavenly places.

  906. So,

  907. that same power

  908. that raised God,

  909. raised Christ

  910. from the grave,

  911. seated Christ

  912. on the heavenly throne,

  913. it becomes yours

  914. through adoption.

  915. It brings life to you

  916. and it unites you

  917. to Christ.

  918. So,

  919. I want you to look next

  920. at chapter 2,

  921. verse 4

  922. to see how

  923. all those

  924. that God causes

  925. to believe

  926. he has adopted.

  927. See,

  928. God adopts

  929. all those

  930. that he regenerates.

  931. Look at chapter 2,

  932. verse 4.

  933. He says,

  934. God,

  935. who is rich in mercy

  936. for his great love,

  937. wherein he has loved us

  938. even while we were

  939. dead in sins,

  940. he has quickened us.

  941. He has made us alive

  942. together

  943. with Christ.

  944. If you believe

  945. in Jesus Christ,

  946. it's because he has

  947. breathed

  948. that same resurrection

  949. life into you.

  950. He has united you

  951. to Jesus Christ

  952. who sits at the

  953. Father's right hand.

  954. Ponder how this

  955. adoption is true

  956. for you personally.

  957. The more you feel

  958. and understand

  959. that I do not

  960. deserve such

  961. powerful grace

  962. poured out

  963. in my life,

  964. the more useful

  965. Christ makes us

  966. for his kingdom.

  967. Charles Spurgeon

  968. said,

  969. the most useful

  970. members of church

  971. are usually those

  972. who would be doing

  973. harm if they were

  974. not doing good.

  975. We would have been

  976. on that path

  977. and we know it,

  978. but God adopted me.

  979. He brought me

  980. into his father's house.

  981. I will serve him.

  982. I will be useful

  983. for his kingdom

  984. out of gratitude.

  985. I warned you

  986. against those

  987. false labels.

  988. They slap Christian

  989. onto different things.

  990. Here's what we just

  991. saw in this passage,

  992. that the true church

  993. is made up

  994. 100%

  995. of redeemed

  996. slaves.

  997. The true church

  998. is made up

  999. 100%

  1000. of adopted

  1001. orphans.

  1002. If you belong

  1003. to Christ,

  1004. you are in his

  1005. father's house.

  1006. You never

  1007. have to fear

  1008. eternal

  1009. homelessness.

  1010. He puts his

  1011. name on you.

  1012. You have

  1013. been

  1014. adopted.

  1015. He will

  1016. not change

  1017. his mind

  1018. about you.

  1019. Number five,

  1020. ponder

  1021. what it means

  1022. to belong

  1023. to God's

  1024. family,

  1025. the heavenly

  1026. kingdom,

  1027. Christ's body

  1028. on earth.

  1029. A few

  1030. verses back,

  1031. I read for us

  1032. how Paul is

  1033. describing the

  1034. power of Satan

  1035. over this

  1036. present evil

  1037. age.

  1038. Doesn't that

  1039. give you the

  1040. chills up your

  1041. spine?

  1042. If we

  1043. understand what

  1044. the Bible

  1045. really says

  1046. is going on

  1047. in the

  1048. spiritual realm,

  1049. this present

  1050. evil age is

  1051. terrifying.

  1052. We need to

  1053. take up arms.

  1054. There's no

  1055. more time to

  1056. be drowsy

  1057. or distracted.

  1058. I know my

  1059. own weakness,

  1060. the remaining

  1061. flesh,

  1062. the battle,

  1063. and there

  1064. should be a

  1065. healthy fear,

  1066. a healthy zeal

  1067. in all of us

  1068. to depend on

  1069. God and to

  1070. keep trusting

  1071. him.

  1072. Don't trust

  1073. yourself for

  1074. one moment.

  1075. You should

  1076. fear that

  1077. relapse into

  1078. the pattern

  1079. of the

  1080. world.

  1081. We all

  1082. should.

  1083. But we

  1084. also should

  1085. not have

  1086. fear.

  1087. We need

  1088. to live

  1089. in light

  1090. of this

  1091. reality.

  1092. Christ

  1093. lives and

  1094. he rules

  1095. from heaven.

  1096. Look at

  1097. what Paul

  1098. says here

  1099. in chapter

  1100. 1 verse

  1101. 21.

  1102. He encourages

  1103. this church.

  1104. He says,

  1105. far above

  1106. all principality,

  1107. power,

  1108. might,

  1109. dominion,

  1110. and every

  1111. name that

  1112. is named,

  1113. far above

  1114. all those

  1115. is our

  1116. Lord Jesus

  1117. Christ,

  1118. the King

  1119. of kings

  1120. on his

  1121. throne of

  1122. glory.

  1123. What's

  1124. more,

  1125. it's not

  1126. only in

  1127. this world,

  1128. Paul wrote,

  1129. but also

  1130. in the

  1131. world which

  1132. is to

  1133. come.

  1134. If you

  1135. are adopted

  1136. into God's

  1137. family,

  1138. you already

  1139. belong to

  1140. that spiritual

  1141. heavenly

  1142. kingdom.

  1143. You belong

  1144. there now.

  1145. And be

  1146. encouraged with

  1147. verse 22,

  1148. Paul writes

  1149. that God

  1150. has put

  1151. all things

  1152. under the

  1153. feet of

  1154. Jesus.

  1155. Yes,

  1156. our King

  1157. Jesus is

  1158. already ruling

  1159. here now

  1160. spiritually,

  1161. and he

  1162. will come

  1163. one day

  1164. consummately.

  1165. We are in

  1166. that overlap

  1167. of the ages,

  1168. this present

  1169. evil age and

  1170. the age to

  1171. come which

  1172. is already

  1173. inaugurated.

  1174. We already

  1175. have been

  1176. adopted into

  1177. that kingdom.

  1178. His kingdom

  1179. on earth

  1180. right now

  1181. is a

  1182. spiritual

  1183. kingdom.

  1184. Look at

  1185. what he says

  1186. in the rest

  1187. of verse 2.

  1188. The Father

  1189. gave Jesus

  1190. Christ to be

  1191. the head

  1192. over all

  1193. things to

  1194. the church.

  1195. Verse 23,

  1196. the church

  1197. is his

  1198. body and

  1199. is the

  1200. fullness of

  1201. him that

  1202. fills all

  1203. in all.

  1204. How does

  1205. God rule

  1206. over this

  1207. whole world?

  1208. Well,

  1209. God never

  1210. stopped being

  1211. the creator

  1212. and the

  1213. sustainer of

  1214. everyone and

  1215. everything.

  1216. Yes,

  1217. he's preserving

  1218. the whole

  1219. world for

  1220. his purposes,

  1221. but it's

  1222. through the

  1223. church that

  1224. his spiritual

  1225. rule has

  1226. already begun.

  1227. And King

  1228. Jesus,

  1229. he rules

  1230. this entire

  1231. world through

  1232. his church

  1233. until every

  1234. last one who

  1235. will be joined

  1236. in to the

  1237. family of the

  1238. father believes.

  1239. That's how his

  1240. kingdom is coming.

  1241. What you enjoy

  1242. now by faith

  1243. belonging to

  1244. the spiritual

  1245. kingdom,

  1246. you trust by

  1247. faith,

  1248. one day you

  1249. will enjoy it

  1250. fully and

  1251. consummately.

  1252. Go back to

  1253. chapter 1 and

  1254. look at this

  1255. promise in

  1256. verse 7.

  1257. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:7

  1258. chapter 1

  1259. verse 7.

  1260. God wants

  1261. you to

  1262. believe that

  1263. in the age

  1264. to come,

  1265. he will show

  1266. you the

  1267. exceeding

  1268. riches of

  1269. his grace

  1270. in his

  1271. kindness toward

  1272. us who

  1273. through Christ

  1274. Jesus belong

  1275. to him.

  1276. He wants

  1277. you to see

  1278. now by faith

  1279. the exceeding

  1280. riches of

  1281. belonging to

  1282. the father's

  1283. house.

  1284. You already

  1285. have the

  1286. family name.

  1287. You're already

  1288. there.

  1289. And one

  1290. day all

  1291. will see the

  1292. riches,

  1293. the exceeding,

  1294. abounding,

  1295. overflowing

  1296. riches of

  1297. God's grace

  1298. and kindness.

  1299. So maybe God

  1300. needs to

  1301. reform and

  1302. heal our

  1303. view of

  1304. church itself

  1305. and who we

  1306. are.

  1307. The Bible

  1308. fed,

  1309. spirit filled,

  1310. Christ owned

  1311. church is

  1312. not a

  1313. depressing

  1314. foster shelter.

  1315. Church is

  1316. life giving

  1317. hospital for

  1318. souls.

  1319. The Bible

  1320. fed,

  1321. spirit filled,

  1322. Christ owned

  1323. church is

  1324. not your

  1325. temporary

  1326. orphanage.

  1327. It's your

  1328. forever family.

  1329. family.

  1330. Well those

  1331. are the

  1332. five things

  1333. I want you

  1334. to ponder

  1335. but we

  1336. also need

  1337. to see how

  1338. Paul ends

  1339. with an

  1340. exhortation.

  1341. If this

  1342. is true for

  1343. you, you

  1344. belong to

  1345. the family

  1346. of the

  1347. father, it

  1348. needs to

  1349. change our

  1350. walk.

  1351. Ponder what

  1352. your adoption

  1353. means for

  1354. your walk.

  1355. Look at

  1356. chapter 2

  1357. verse 8.

  1358. Paul said,

  1359. Paul couldn't

  1360. make it any

  1361. clearer here.

  1362. You are

  1363. not saved

  1364. by your

  1365. own works.

  1366. That's

  1367. good news.

  1368. You were

  1369. not adopted

  1370. based on

  1371. your good

  1372. works.

  1373. You know

  1374. what that

  1375. means?

  1376. God will

  1377. not unadopt

  1378. you based

  1379. on your

  1380. works.

  1381. Once adopted,

  1382. you're in

  1383. his house.

  1384. Is a

  1385. loving father

  1386. going to let

  1387. his adopted

  1388. child go

  1389. around with

  1390. lice in

  1391. the hair,

  1392. rashes all

  1393. over the

  1394. skin,

  1395. no deodorant?

  1396. Look what he

  1397. says here.

  1398. You're

  1399. adopted.

  1400. You're

  1401. going to have

  1402. the Holy

  1403. Spirit working

  1404. on you as

  1405. a masterpiece.

  1406. God is the

  1407. master craftsman

  1408. and you are

  1409. the project.

  1410. He loves to

  1411. work on you

  1412. and me.

  1413. He says we're

  1414. being crafted

  1415. by God

  1416. himself.

  1417. Look at

  1418. chapter 2

  1419. verse 10.

  1420. Paul says we

  1421. are his

  1422. workmanship.

  1423. Paul's in this

  1424. too.

  1425. The more God

  1426. works on him

  1427. the more he

  1428. says I'm

  1429. the worst

  1430. of sinners.

  1431. We are

  1432. his workmanship.

  1433. We are

  1434. created in

  1435. Christ Jesus

  1436. unto good

  1437. works.

  1438. Isn't that the

  1439. beauty of the

  1440. gospel?

  1441. Law and

  1442. gospel.

  1443. That's it

  1444. right there.

  1445. That's why I

  1446. jokingly say

  1447. Paul was a

  1448. reformed

  1449. Baptist.

  1450. He got it.

  1451. Well,

  1452. Sinclair Ferguson,

  1453. a Presbyterian,

  1454. the coolest

  1455. Presbyterian,

  1456. I love how

  1457. he put this

  1458. exact gospel

  1459. truth.

  1460. He said

  1461. this,

  1462. those Christ

  1463. adopts have

  1464. the Holy

  1465. Spirit and

  1466. the Holy

  1467. Spirit is

  1468. sent into

  1469. your life

  1470. to make

  1471. your life

  1472. the kind

  1473. of place

  1474. which the

  1475. Father can

  1476. say to

  1477. the Son,

  1478. I feel at

  1479. home here.

  1480. Don't you?

  1481. Remember how

  1482. Jesus said in

  1483. the gospel of

  1484. John,

  1485. my Father

  1486. is always

  1487. working?

  1488. This is how

  1489. the Father

  1490. is always

  1491. working.

  1492. He is

  1493. working in

  1494. you and

  1495. in me.

  1496. And he's

  1497. working through

  1498. the church

  1499. together to

  1500. accomplish his

  1501. purposes in

  1502. all the

  1503. world.

  1504. William Tyndale

  1505. understood this,

  1506. I believe.

  1507. He was the

  1508. Englishman who

  1509. first translated

  1510. the scripture

  1511. from the

  1512. Hebrew and

  1513. Greek into

  1514. the English

  1515. nation.

  1516. So he was

  1517. using his

  1518. own country as

  1519. a mission

  1520. field to

  1521. bring them

  1522. the word of

  1523. God and

  1524. the gospel.

  1525. Here's what

  1526. Tyndale said,

  1527. he said,

  1528. the church

  1529. is the

  1530. one institution

  1531. that exists

  1532. for those

  1533. outside of

  1534. it.

  1535. Why is

  1536. that?

  1537. Well,

  1538. because we're

  1539. in the

  1540. Father's

  1541. house.

  1542. And he's

  1543. working in

  1544. us and

  1545. through us

  1546. to bring

  1547. more sons

  1548. and daughters

  1549. into his

  1550. family.

  1551. And that's

  1552. what Paul

  1553. says here,

  1554. church,

  1555. that you

  1556. and I

  1557. and Paul

  1558. and all

  1559. those who

  1560. belong to

  1561. Christ,

  1562. we are the

  1563. body of

  1564. Jesus Christ

  1565. on earth.

  1566. that's our

  1567. mission.

  1568. And he

  1569. says we

  1570. will walk

  1571. as the

  1572. body of

  1573. Christ in

  1574. those good

  1575. works.

  1576. Notice what

  1577. he says at

  1578. the end of

  1579. verse 10,

  1580. those good

  1581. works which

  1582. God has

  1583. before ordained

  1584. that we

  1585. should walk

  1586. in them.

  1587. That steals

  1588. all the glory

  1589. out of anyone

  1590. wanting to

  1591. take credit

  1592. now for

  1593. walking in

  1594. good works.

  1595. Did you do

  1596. a good work

  1597. this past week?

  1598. Probably all

  1599. of us did.

  1600. Well,

  1601. God in

  1602. his infinite

  1603. wisdom,

  1604. he prepared

  1605. that good

  1606. work that

  1607. you did

  1608. this week.

  1609. He prepared

  1610. that you

  1611. would walk

  1612. and do

  1613. that.

  1614. You're his

  1615. hands and

  1616. feet,

  1617. his body

  1618. on this

  1619. earth.

  1620. Who gets

  1621. all the

  1622. glory for

  1623. your good

  1624. works?

  1625. It has

  1626. to be

  1627. God.

  1628. You would

  1629. have been

  1630. walking a

  1631. totally

  1632. different

  1633. path if

  1634. God had

  1635. not saved

  1636. you.

  1637. And he

  1638. foreordained

  1639. great works

  1640. for each

  1641. one of us

  1642. to walk

  1643. and accomplish

  1644. so that

  1645. he would

  1646. get the

  1647. glory in

  1648. all of

  1649. them.

  1650. Here's the

  1651. rest of

  1652. Sinclair Ferguson's

  1653. quote.

  1654. He confesses

  1655. what I feel

  1656. in his

  1657. words.

  1658. He says,

  1659. I look at

  1660. my life and

  1661. there's still

  1662. so much

  1663. that needs

  1664. to change.

  1665. Amen?

  1666. There's so

  1667. much that needs

  1668. to change in

  1669. my life to

  1670. make it a

  1671. place where

  1672. the Father

  1673. and the Son

  1674. feel at

  1675. home in

  1676. me.

  1677. Ferguson

  1678. encourages

  1679. us,

  1680. take comfort.

  1681. That is the

  1682. Holy Spirit's

  1683. ministry.

  1684. ministry.

  1685. Ponder

  1686. your wondrous

  1687. adoption in

  1688. Christ and

  1689. inevitably you

  1690. will walk in

  1691. the good works

  1692. that God has

  1693. already ordained

  1694. for you.

  1695. let's pray.

  1696. Let's pray.

  1697. Paul said that he

  1698. prayed for them

  1699. from prison and I

1700. just want to read to

  1701. you Paul's prayer

  1702. and I join my

  1703. prayer, my thoughts

  1704. for you with his

  1705. before the Lord.

  1706. from Ephesians 3

  1707. starting at verse

  1708. 16.

  1709. I pray that out

  1710. of his glorious

  1711. riches he may

  1712. strengthen you

  1713. with his power

  1714. through his

  1715. spirit in your

  1716. inner being so

  1717. that Christ may

  1718. dwell in your

  1719. hearts through

  1720. faith and I

  1721. pray that you

  1722. being rooted

  1723. and established

  1724. in love may

  1725. have power

  1726. together with

  1727. all the Lord's

  1728. holy people to

  1729. grasp how wide

  1730. and long and

  1731. high and deep

  1732. is the love of

  1733. Christ and to

  1734. know this love

  1735. that surpasses

  1736. knowledge that

  1737. you may be filled

  1738. to the measure

  1739. of all the

  1740. fullness of God.

  1741. Now to him who

  1742. is able to do

  1743. immeasurably more

  1744. than all we ask

  1745. or imagine

  1746. according to his

  1747. powerful work that

  1748. is at work within

  1749. us.

  1750. To him be glory

  1751. in the church

  1752. and in Christ

  1753. Jesus throughout

  1754. all generations

  1755. forever and

  1756. ever.

  1757. Amen.

  1758. Amen.

  1759. Amen.

  1760. Amen.
