  1. but we've got some extras.

  2. We'd love for you to just take one.

  3. It's our gift to you.

  4. So we started in Psalm 1,

  5. and this is our eighth week this summer

  6. going through the Psalms.

  7. And so this will be our last one

  8. until next summer, Lord willing.

  9. Psalm 8 is one of the most glorious,

  10. most famous Psalms

  11. out of all 150 in the Psalter.

  12. Psalm 8.

  13. Well, as I read Psalm 8

  14. and you follow along,

  15. we believe that this is God's

  16. very own word for his people.

  17. It's God's inspired, inerrant, infallible,

  18. clear and sufficient word.

  19. And so as I read this,

  20. after we're done, I'll say,

  21. this is the word of the Lord

  22. and the people of God say,

  23. thanks be to God.

  24. Psalm 8.

  25. To the choir master,

  26. according to the Giddeth,

  27. a Psalm of David.

  28. O Lord, our Lord,

  29. how majestic is your name

  30. in all the earth.

  31. You have set your glory

  32. above the heavens.

  33. Out of the mouths of babies

  34. and infants,

  35. you have established strength

  36. because of your foes

  37. to silence the foe and the avenger.

  38. When I look at your heavens,

  39. the work of your fingers,

  40. the moon and the stars

  41. which you have set in place,

  42. what is man

  43. that you are mindful of him,

  44. and the son of man

  45. that you care for him.

  46. You have made him

  47. a little lower

  48. than the heavenly beings

  49. and crowned him

  50. with glory and honor.

  51. You have given him dominion

  52. over the works of your hands.

  53. You have put all things

  54. under his feet,

  55. all sheep and oxen

  56. and also the beasts of the field,

  57. the birds of the heavens

  58. and the fish of the sea,

  59. whatever passes along

  60. the paths of the seas.

  61. O Lord, our Lord,

  62. how majestic is your name

  63. in all the earth.

  64. This is the word of the Lord.

  65. Thanks be to God.

  66. You may be seated.

  67. The Bible says that

  68. the grass withers

  69. and the flower fades,

  70. but it's the word of the Lord

  71. that endures forever.

  72. Would you pray with me?

  73. Father, please show us

  74. how all of Scripture

  75. testifies of the gospel

  76. of Jesus Christ.

  77. May his gospel

  78. ring forth

  79. clearly

  80. with the power

  81. of your Holy Spirit

  82. through Psalm 8

  83. and that your purpose

  84. will be done

  85. in each soul

  86. for the glory of Christ alone

  87. we ask.

  88. Amen.

  89. Beloved congregation

  90. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  91. when God

  92. is your Lord,

  93. worship

  94. is warfare.

  95. Last time we had

  96. an open air service,

  97. one of our brothers here

  98. said,

  99. we need to keep doing that

  100. because it's warfare.

  101. When we are worshiping

  102. publicly,

  103. unashamed of the gospel,

  104. it's spiritual warfare.

  105. We don't know

  106. what's happening

  107. in the spiritual realm.

  108. But look at verse 2

  109. in Psalm 8.

  110. Verse 2 says,

  111. God has enemies

  112. and there's an avenger.

  113. That's Satan.

  114. He wants to spoil

  115. everything God has done.

  116. But yet,

  117. Psalm 8 verse 2

    Psalms 8:2

  118. says that God

  119. has ordained,

  120. God has established

  121. his praise.

  122. And it's through

  123. his praise

  124. out of the mouths

  125. of babies

  126. that he attacks

  127. the enemy

  128. and silences him.

  129. Well,

  130. there it is.

  131. Worship

  132. is warfare.

  133. I was trying to

  134. imagine,

  135. what if this exact

  136. congregation right here

  137. got surrounded

  138. by enemies?

  139. And then,

  140. our strong men,

  141. we have many strong men here,

  142. one by one

  143. came to the front,

  144. but then came one

  145. appearing as an angel

  146. of light

  147. and began to recall

  148. all the sins

  149. of each of these

  150. strong men

  151. till each one

  152. takes the back seat again

  153. and fades away.

  154. Well,

  155. I picture out of this

  156. congregation

  157. comes one of our

  158. littlest children.

  159. And from those mouths

  160. in a squeaky,

  161. high-pitched voice,

  162. Jesus loves me,

  163. this I know,

  164. for the Bible

  165. tells me so.

  166. And at the name

  167. of Jesus,

  168. one little word

  169. from an infant

  170. shall fell

  171. that enemy.

  172. And that,

  173. that one

  174. that was the accuser

  175. that appeared

  176. as the angel of light,

  177. it reveals to be

  178. a pulley on the dragon,

  179. whips around

  180. and runs away

  181. at the name

  182. of Jesus

  183. who loves his people.

  184. So,

  185. I hope that this

  186. is less of a sermon

  187. of teaching,

  188. it's more of a sermon

  189. as worship

  190. and worship

  191. as warfare.

  192. As we go through

  193. Psalm 8,

  194. I want to bring up

  195. five questions to you

  196. for reflection

  197. and then one

  198. exhortation

  199. from Psalm 8.

  200. So,

  201. number one,

  202. doesn't all

  203. of creation

  204. move you

  205. to declare

  206. God's majesty?

  207. The superscription

  208. is also part

  209. of inspired scripture.

  210. and there's a Hebrew

  211. word that they decided

  212. to not even translate,

  213. just leave it.

  214. And it's,

  215. do you see it

  216. in the superscription

  217. right above Psalm 8?

  218. It's the gideth.

  219. And that word

  220. is translated

  221. winepress.

  222. But it's probably

  223. a melody

  224. that was familiar

  225. and when you think

  226. of the winepress

  227. in ancient Israel,

  228. that would be

  229. a time of the harvest.

  230. That would be

  231. a time of joy

  232. and abundance.

  233. And you can see

  234. people singing

  235. even as the sun

  236. is down

  237. and the stars

  238. are coming out,

  239. they're stomping

  240. those grapes

  241. and the red juice

  242. is flowing.

  243. O Lord,

  244. our Lord

  245. is the lyric

  246. to this glorious,

  247. joyful melody.

  248. How excellent,

  249. how majestic,

  250. how exceedingly good

  251. is your name

  252. in all the earth.

  253. The first book

  254. of the Psalms,

  255. this first cluster

  256. of Psalms

  257. from the pen

  258. of King David,

  259. they tell of a king

  260. who's being accused.

  261. Isn't that comforting

  262. that as the king's

  263. own heart and flesh

  264. fears the men

  265. all around him,

  266. the enemies

  267. and the foes,

  268. the king is encouraged

  269. by looking at

  270. the faithful people

  271. of God

  272. singing this melody,

  273. O Lord,

  274. our Lord,

  275. how majestic

  276. is your name

  277. in all the earth.

  278. God ordains

  279. his strength

  280. even for that

  281. accused king

  282. out of the mouths

  283. of babes

  284. and infants

  285. who are praising God.

  286. Faith like a child

  287. brings strength

  288. to the people

  289. of God.

  290. Hasn't that been true

  291. in your experience?

  292. Well,

  293. then,

  294. this glorious

  295. Psalm picks up

  296. momentum

  297. and

  298. nothing is beyond

  299. the reach

  300. of the imagination

  301. when it comes

  302. to Psalm 8

  303. declaring the majesty

  304. of God.

  305. Look at verse 3.

  306. King David,

  307. the harp-playing

  308. psalmist,

  309. says,

  310. I look at your heavens,

  311. the work

  312. of your fingers,

  313. the moon

  314. and the stars

  315. which you have

  316. set in place.

  317. King David

  318. was a shepherd

  319. when he was younger,

  320. so you can almost

  321. picture him out there

  322. in the pasture

  323. late at night.

  324. Everybody in his home

  325. forgot that he was

  326. even part of the family,

  327. but he's out there

  328. all alone

  329. laying with his back

  330. on the dewy pasture

  331. looking up.

  332. There's no light pollution,

  333. there's no artificial light

  334. anywhere.

  335. And the majesty

  336. of God

  337. is on display.

  338. Maybe now

  339. in the midst

  340. of the congregation

  341. these little babes

  342. and infants

  343. that come close,

  344. they ask him,

  345. how did those stars

  346. get there?

  347. How come the moon

  348. travels that way?

  349. And do you see

  350. the answer in verse 3?

  351. It's because God

  352. has set each one

  353. in their place.

  354. That's the childlike faith.

  355. That's the answer.

  356. It's that

  357. this is all

  358. the work of God's fingers.

  359. If that was true

  360. true in ancient Israel,

  361. you would think

  362. that perhaps now

  363. with scientific advancements,

  364. we would realize

  365. well Christianity

  366. and this Judeo-Christian

  367. God of the Bible

  368. of the Psalter

  369. is very archaic.

  370. And all of modern science

  371. dispels

  372. those false notions.

  373. In the 1990s,

  374. the Hubble telescope,

  375. which is a giant telescope

  376. about the size

  377. of a school bus,

  378. it was set to fly

  379. about 340 miles

  380. above the Earth's crust.

  381. And the pictures

  382. that the Hubble telescope

  383. take reveal even more

  384. God's majesty

  385. rather than denying it.

  386. Just one example

  387. is what's called

  388. the Whirlpool Galaxy.

  389. If you want to,

  390. be blown away,

  391. look up HD photos

  392. taken by the Hubble telescope

  393. of the Whirlpool Galaxy.

  394. This galaxy is 31 million

  395. light years away.

  396. We don't even know

  397. enough about science,

  398. most of us,

  399. to even appreciate

  400. how far that is.

  401. 31 million light years away.

  402. This one galaxy

  403. has 300 billion stars.

  404. You think there's a lot

  405. of people in the world?

  406. There's about 8 billion

  407. people in the world.

  408. This one galaxy

  409. has 300 billion stars in it.

  410. How did all those stars

  411. get to be

  412. in this Whirlpool Galaxy?

  413. And how did their light

  414. travel 31 million years

  415. from there

  416. until Earth

  417. so that it could even

  418. be viewed?

  419. It's because God said,

  420. let there be light.

  421. So to speak,

  422. the light traveled

  423. from the mouth of God

  424. at 300 million miles

  425. per second.

  426. And the Whirlpool Galaxy

  427. was formed.

  428. Doesn't that sound big?

  429. Well,

  430. this one galaxy

  431. is only one

  432. of hundreds

  433. of billions

  434. of other galaxies,

  435. and that's only

  436. within the known cosmos

  437. of God.

  438. Let me give you

  439. a comparison

  440. of how big

  441. one billion is

  442. compared to one million.

  443. We're throwing out

  444. these astronomically

  445. large numbers.

  446. One million seconds,

  447. if you had to estimate,

  448. how much time

  449. would pass

  450. with one million seconds?

  451. It's only 12 days.

  452. One billion seconds

  453. is 31 years.

  454. Modern science

  455. does not deny

  456. the majesty

  457. of our Creator.

  458. If anything,

  459. it humbles us

  460. even smaller

  461. than what

  462. ancient David

  463. would have thought

  464. looking up

  465. at the stars.

  466. That's why

  467. we can say

  468. like that wonderful poem

  469. by Milton Vincent,

  470. Beholding the heavens,

  471. I now understand

  472. God measured them all

  473. with the breadth

  474. of His hand.

  475. He fashioned

  476. the trillions

  477. of stars in the sky,

  478. the sun and the moon

  479. He established on high,

  480. all heaven and earth

  481. which He made

  482. in six days,

  483. show daily

  484. and nightly

  485. His merit

  486. of praise.

  487. Now look at verse 1.

  488. We think that the stars

  489. reveal the majesty

  490. of God.

  491. Verse 1 says

  492. that God set

  493. His own glory

  494. above the heavens.

  495. Isaiah 40 verse 22

    Isaiah 40:22

  496. says that God

  497. sits on His throne

  498. above the horizon

  499. of the cosmos.

  500. This was our call

  501. to worship

  502. that God

  503. stretched out

  504. the heavens

  505. like a piece

  506. of cloth.

  507. You see how much

  508. more majestic

  509. God is.

  510. Then we can even

  511. fathom

  512. or put into words

  513. one of the most

  514. beloved hymns

  515. of the church

  516. is

  517. How Great Thou Art

  518. and How Great Thou Art

  519. is written

  520. about Psalm 8.

  521. And that's exactly

  522. what we declare

  523. when we sing it.

  524. Oh Lord my God,

  525. when I in awesome wonder

  526. consider all the worlds

  527. Thy hands have made,

  528. I see the stars,

  529. I hear the roaring thunder,

  530. Thy power throughout,

  531. the universe displayed.

  532. Aren't you moved

  533. to declare

  534. the majestic name

  535. of our God?

  536. Don't you want to worship

  537. this majestic God,

  538. creator of all?

  539. Well the second point

  540. of reflection is this,

  541. when you do see

  542. the majesty of God,

  543. don't you marvel then

  544. by contrast

  545. at your place

  546. in this universe

  547. that He's created?

  548. See,

  549. God set His glory

  550. even above

  551. those heavens

  552. and then you look

  553. at yourself

  554. like David,

  555. look what he says

  556. in verse 4,

  557. what is man?

  558. Who am I

  559. that you are mindful

  560. of a guy like me?

  561. Or even the son of man

  562. that you care for him?

  563. Isaiah 40, 22 says

  564. man is like a grasshopper

  565. before God.

  566. But yet,

  567. this psalm tells us

  568. that God does care

  569. for His creation.

  570. Every single one,

  571. not a hair can fall

  572. from our head

  573. without the knowledge

  574. of the Father

  575. in heaven.

  576. Milton Vincent's poem

  577. goes on to say,

  578. so wondrously caring

  579. is God

  580. every day,

  581. creating,

  582. sustaining

  583. my life

  584. every way.

  585. Each breath I intake,

  586. every beat

  587. of my heart,

  588. all pleasures

  589. well tasted

  590. are His

  591. to impart.

  592. In fact,

  593. for this purpose

  594. He brought me to be

  595. that I might

  596. His glory

  597. and kindliness see

  598. and cherish Him

  599. fully

  600. in all of my days

  601. obeying with pleasure

  602. whatever He says.

  603. Well, David

  604. takes his eyes

  605. off of the heavens

  606. and he looks

  607. at the earth next

  608. in verse 5.

  609. He says,

  610. you have crowned man

  611. with glory

  612. and honor.

  613. He says,

  614. I look at all

  615. the other beasts,

  616. all the other creatures.

  617. None of them

  618. have a soul.

  619. No other creature

  620. is called an image

  621. bearer of God.

  622. When God made

  623. all the creation

  624. He says it is good

  625. but when He made

  626. Adam and Eve

  627. He says it is

  628. very good.

  629. Do you marvel

  630. at this majestic God

  631. who cares

  632. about you?

  633. not only

  634. has He made you

  635. in His image

  636. He has placed you

  637. over His creation

  638. in a special role.

  639. Look at what He says

  640. in verse 6.

  641. You have given

  642. man dominion

  643. over the works

  644. of your hand.

  645. In verse 7 He says

  646. all sheep,

  647. oxen,

  648. and the beasts

  649. of the field.

  650. In verse 8 He says

  651. it's also the birds

  652. of the heavens,

  653. the fish of the sea,

  654. whatever passes

  655. along the paths

  656. of the seas.

  657. Oh Lord,

  658. our Lord,

  659. how majestic

  660. is your name

  661. in all the earth.

  662. The nation of Israel

  663. was doing spiritual warfare

  664. by calling out

  665. specifically

  666. how God

  667. is majestic

  668. in all His creation.

  669. What comes to your mind

  670. when you think of

  671. all that God

  672. has created

  673. that declares

  674. His majesty?

  675. What comes to mind?

  676. When we rehearse

  677. this together,

  678. we're worshiping God

  679. and we're doing this

  680. as spiritual warfare.

  681. That simple little pigeon

  682. in Israel,

  683. that pigeon declares

  684. the majesty of God.

  685. The piranha

  686. in the Amazon

  687. declares

  688. the majesty of God.

  689. The palatopis

  690. off the beach

  691. in Australia

  692. declares

  693. the majesty

  694. of God.

  695. What else declares

  696. the majesty

  697. of God?

  698. Well, the penguin

  699. on an iceberg

  700. in Argentina

  701. declares

  702. the majesty

  703. of God.

  704. The porcupine

  705. in a Canadian forest

  706. declares

  707. the majesty

  708. of God.

  709. There's a pike fish

  710. right now

  711. in a lake

  712. in Mongolia

  713. that declares

  714. the majesty

  715. of God.

  716. We worship God

  717. by looking at

  718. all that He has made.

  719. And when we

  720. praise God

  721. for His majesty

  722. in all the creation,

  723. His spirit

  724. is winning the war.

  725. His kingdom

  726. is advancing

  727. as we worship Him.

  728. I thought about

  729. picking on

  730. the poodle

  731. in Paris

  732. but that was

  733. just too obvious.

  734. But even the poodle

  735. would declare

  736. the majesty

  737. of God.

  738. You want a couple more?

  739. Okay.

  740. No one said yes

  741. but okay.

  742. Well, the panther

  743. in the Brazilian jungle

  744. declares

  745. the majesty

  746. of God.

  747. The panda

  748. in a forest

  749. in China

  750. declares

  751. the majesty

  752. of God.

  753. And even for those

  754. who fear snakes,

  755. yes,

  756. even the python

  757. in subtropical

  758. India

  759. declares

  760. the majesty

  761. of God.

  762. Anywhere we travel

  763. or walk

  764. or visit,

  765. any hike you go on,

  766. it's declaring

  767. the majesty

  768. of God.

  769. You can say

  770. this is my

  771. Father's world.

  772. He shines

  773. in all

  774. that's fair.

  775. In the rustling grass

  776. I hear Him pass

  777. and He speaks

  778. to me

  779. everywhere.

  780. The third point

  781. of reflection.

  782. The more you

  783. marvel at creation,

  784. doesn't it make

  785. you want to know

  786. your majestic

  787. creator?

  788. You want to

  789. declare His majesty

  790. but don't you

  791. want more than that

  792. too?

  793. You want to

  794. know Him.

  795. Look back

  796. at verse 1

  797. again.

  798. He says,

  799. O Lord,

  800. our Lord.

  801. And He's not

  802. just repeating

  803. the same word.

  804. In the Hebrew

  805. He says,

  806. O Yahweh,

  807. our Adonai.

  808. Yahweh is

  809. the unspeakable

  810. name of God.

  811. It's not even

  812. including the

  813. vowels.

  814. It's just

  815. Y-W-H.

  816. It's the name

  817. that should not

  818. be spoken

  819. because of fear

  820. of taking the

  821. Lord's name

  822. in vain.

  823. So when you

  824. behold all of

  825. God's majesty

  826. and all of

  827. creation,

  828. you say,

  829. that's Yahweh.

  830. I can't even

  831. say His name.

  832. But yet,

  833. He says,

  834. O Lord,

  835. O Yahweh,

  836. our Adonai.

  837. And Adonai

  838. was the word

  839. they could say

  840. when they speak

  841. of God

  842. without it being

  843. irreverent.

  844. So yes,

  845. this majestic

  846. Lord that is

  847. transcendent,

  848. He is our

  849. Adonai.

  850. He's our

  851. covenant keeping

  852. God who draws

  853. near to us.

  854. We marvel at

  855. His creation,

  856. but we want to

  857. know Him.

  858. We want to be

  859. able to call

  860. Him by His

  861. name and

  862. worship Him.

  863. But see,

  864. the psalm,

  865. He's always got

  866. this tension

  867. going through it

  868. because He says,

  869. God has set

  870. His glory above

  871. the heavens like

  872. it's out of His

  873. reach.

  874. All of creation,

  875. it's pointing to

  876. how majestic God

  877. is almost

  878. beyond the

  879. grasp of

  880. any sinful

  881. human.

  882. In fact,

  883. it is beyond

  884. the grasp

  885. unless God

  886. were to do

  887. something.

  888. This is what

  889. the church has

  890. always recognized

  891. and declared

  892. of God.

  893. Nehemiah 9.6

  894. says,

  895. You alone

  896. are the Lord.

  897. You made

  898. the heavens,

  899. even the highest

  900. heavens,

  901. and all their

  902. starry host,

  903. the earth and

  904. all that is in

  905. it, the seas and

  906. all that is in

  907. them.

  908. You can just

  909. hear the longing

  910. of God's people

  911. as they're coming

  912. back from exile.

  913. We want to

  914. know You,

  915. Lord.

  916. We see all

  917. that You have

  918. done, and You

  919. have been faithful

  920. to us as our

  921. Adonai.

  922. We want to

  923. know You.

  924. In verse 5,

  925. He says,

  926. You made man,

  927. this is interesting

  928. how He words it,

  929. You made man a

  930. little lower

  931. than the Elohim.

  932. You made man a

  933. little lower than

  934. those heavenly

  935. beings, those angels

  936. and spiritual

  937. beings.

  938. Now, He could have

  939. drawn the comparison

  940. looking down,

  941. couldn't He?

  942. He said,

  943. You have made man a

  944. little above the

  945. beasts.

  946. But that's not

  947. where He sets man's

  948. sight.

  949. He says,

  950. You made man a

  951. little lower than

  952. the spiritual beings,

  953. and on top of that,

  954. You crowned him with

  955. Your own glory and

  956. honor.

  957. We can find some

  958. good help here from

  959. classical theism,

  960. from men like

  961. Thomas Aquinas,

  962. who synthesized what

  963. the church believed

  964. of God in the

  965. Middle Ages.

  966. Thomas Aquinas

  967. looked at Psalm 8,

  968. and he says,

  969. Okay, here we have

  970. man that is formed

  971. out of the dirt,

  972. like Adam was made

  973. from the dirt that

  974. God put,

  975. and then God breathed

  976. with the Holy Spirit

  977. a spirit and a soul

  978. into Adam.

  979. And that's exactly the

  980. picture we see here,

  981. that Adam was put over

  982. all the animals,

  983. but yet on top of that,

  984. he was made spiritual

  985. like those heavenly

  986. beings.

  987. So man has this

  988. position of being

  989. earthly,

  990. but yet being spiritual.

  991. There's no other

  992. creature that God

  993. made that is that

  994. way, that has a

  995. body and also has

  996. a soul.

  997. Nehemiah echoes

  998. this in that same

  999. passage, Nehemiah

  1000. 9, 6, he says,

  1001. God, not only did

  1002. you create everything,

  1003. you gave life to

  1004. everything, and

  1005. what's more,

  1006. multitudes of

  1007. heaven worship

  1008. you.

  1009. That longing to

  1010. worship God

  1011. belongs to

  1012. spiritual beings.

  1013. Man longs to

  1014. worship the

  1015. creator as the

  1016. heavenly beings

  1017. worship him

  1018. as spirit.

  1019. The more you

  1020. marvel at creation,

  1021. doesn't it make you

  1022. want to know this

  1023. true God, this

  1024. creator?

1025. And as you want to

  1026. know him, you're

  1027. met with that

  1028. reality that I

  1029. can only tremble.

  1030. I want to

  1031. worship him, but

  1032. I'm so small.

  1033. I am like a

  1034. grasshopper.

  1035. And you're

  1036. overwhelmed with

  1037. fear.

  1038. Scottish

  1039. pastor Eric

  1040. Alexander, he

  1041. said, the fear

  1042. of the Lord is

  1043. just the proper

  1044. reaction of

  1045. sinners to

  1046. God's infinite

  1047. holiness, or of

  1048. creatures to God's

  1049. infinite majesty.

1050. As we grow in the

  1051. knowledge of God, we

  1052. will learn to truly

  1053. tremble before his

  1054. great glory and his

  1055. burning purity, and

  1056. see this is indeed

  1057. the beginning of

  1058. wisdom.

  1059. wisdom.

  1060. Well, because we are

  1061. spiritual creatures,

  1062. here's the fourth

  1063. point of reflection.

  1064. Don't you long for a

  1065. new creation in which

  1066. you truly can feel

  1067. closer to God?

  1068. We are spiritual

  1069. beings.

  1070. Don't you have that

  1071. inner longing to be

  1072. closer and feel even

  1073. closer to God, the

  1074. creator?

  1075. There's a problem

  1076. with Psalm 8.

  1077. The problem is

  1078. this.

  1079. It cannot be

  1080. speaking of Adam, and

  1081. it cannot be speaking

1082. of any son of Adam.

1083. Let me try to make

  1084. that case for you.

  1085. Before Adam sinned, did

  1086. he have any children?

1087. Were there any born of

1088. the seed of Adam that

  1089. were sinless, born

  1090. sinless unto the

  1091. earth?

  1092. No.

  1093. Well, then how can

  1094. verse 2 be referring

  1095. to Adam?

  1096. Look at verse 2.

  1097. The promise in Psalm

    Psalms 8:2

  1098. 8 verse 2 is that God

1099. will silence his foe and

  1100. the avenger from the

  1101. mouths of babes and

  1102. infants.

  1103. Well, there were no

  1104. infants in the Garden

  1105. of Eden.

1106. On top of that, did

1107. Adam silence the foe and

  1108. the avenger?

  1109. No.

  1110. He did just the

  1111. opposite.

  1112. He failed.

1113. Adam did not guard and

  1114. keep the temple dwelling

  1115. presence of God in

  1116. Eden from the serpent.

  1117. Instead, Adam joined the

  1118. rebellion, fell to sin.

1119. And Adam brought a curse on

1120. all of the first creation.

1121. Did Adam, look at verse 6

1122. in Psalm 8, did Adam have

1123. all things put under his

  1124. feet?

  1125. Adam never did.

1126. Yes, he was supposed to

1127. name the animals, but here

  1128. comes the rebellious serpent,

1129. and the serpent wins that

  1130. battle against Adam.

1131. So the psalmist asks in

1132. verse 4, what is man?

1133. What is Adam that you

1134. should care about him or

  1135. the son of Adam?

1136. Who's the son of Adam?

1137. It's everyone born of Adam.

1138. Why should God care for

1139. anyone under the curse of

1140. the first creation sin through

  1141. the first federal head?

  1142. That's why you and I have

  1143. problems.

1144. In Psalm 8, it elevates the

1145. majesty of God, but it also

  1146. exposes us before this

  1147. majestic God as sinners

1148. standing in need of God to

1149. do something on our behalf.

1150. We are spiritual beings that

1151. long to worship our creator,

1152. but yet we're fallen sinners in

  1153. Adam.

1154. We need a new creation.

1155. Some of you are feeling that

1156. now, and though you are part

1157. of the new creation in Christ,

1158. you still feel that distance

  1159. from God.

1160. I just want to encourage you

  1161. right now.

  1162. You get to pray.

1163. You and I get to pray to this

  1164. mighty God, the creator.

1165. And we get to hear his word

1166. ministered to us by his spirit.

  1167. Martin Luther felt that.

1168. He felt, he knew he was saved

1169. forensically, but yet he felt

  1170. distance from God.

1171. He struggled so much throughout

  1172. this whole life.

1173. And he devoured God's word and

1174. translated the whole Bible into

  1175. German.

1176. And Martin Luther said this about

1177. prayer and your fellowship with

1178. the Lord on a daily basis.

1179. Martin Luther's conclusion, see if

  1180. you agree.

1181. We don't pray for God to make us

1182. want to read the Bible.

1183. We read the Bible, and God uses

1184. that to make us want to pray.

1185. We want to fellowship with God.

1186. We get to pray, but it's a

1187. spiritual battle as long as we

1188. are in this body of flesh, under

1189. the curse of Adam, on this world.

1190. But you have a soul, and it's

1191. your soul that longs to worship

1192. God like the heavenly beings.

1193. And it's that soul that is united

1194. to your Savior, Jesus Christ.

  1195. Christ.

1196. Well, Jesus is foreshadowed in Psalm

  1197. 8.

1198. God says, I will make my majesty, my

1199. exceeding good name known to all

  1200. the earth.

  1201. I will do it.

1202. It will not come from the son of

  1203. Adam.

1204. It will come from the seed of woman.

1205. The sons of man will forever be

  1206. slaves to the serpent.

1207. But Genesis 3.15, like our older

  1208. children are memorizing, God

1209. promised in the curse of the

1210. serpent, I will put enmity between

  1211. Eve's offspring and Satan.

1212. And from Eve's line shall rise up

1213. one, my one seed that shall crush

1214. Satan's head, and Satan shall

  1215. bruise his heel.

1216. We long for a new creation.

1217. We long to feel closer to God.

  1218. Trust Him.

1219. Trust this majestic God will come to

  1220. save.

1221. If, Augustine said, if you ever are

  1222. longing, be ever praying.

1223. So the last, the fifth and last point

1224. of reflection is this, that Psalm 8

1225. can only be fulfilled if the majestic

  1226. God Himself does it.

1227. Do you see, here's what you need to

1228. reflect on, do you see Christ in Psalm

  1229. 8?

  1230. Let's march through this.

  1231. Psalm 8 verse 5 says this,

    Psalms 8:5

1232. God made Him a little lower than the

  1233. heavenly beings.

1234. How was this fulfilled in Christ?

1235. Philippians 2.5 says that though Jesus

1236. Christ is God, He did not count equality

1237. with God a thing to be grasped.

1238. Psalm 8.4 says, how mindful is God of

1239. man and how much does God care for the

  1240. fallen line of Adam?

1241. Philippians 2.7 answers that question.

1242. Taking on the form of a servant,

1243. being born in the likeness of men.

1244. Psalm 8 says, it will be sinners on

1245. earth who will praise the majestic

  1246. name of God.

1247. And when Jesus Christ walked this earth

1248. and He was casting out demons,

1249. in Luke 9.42 and 43, the Pharisees

1250. and scribes, they were the foes and the

  1251. avengers.

1252. They were plotting to kill Jesus and as

1253. they were plotting against Him, Jesus

1254. interpreted Psalm 8 for them and said,

1255. God has ordained praise for me out of

1256. the mouths of these babies and infants.

1257. And He did that and fulfilled that to

  1258. strengthen your faith.

1259. God silenced Satan once and for all.

1260. Taking on the form of a man by being

  1261. crushed on the cross.

1262. Putting death to death for our sins.

1263. Philippians 2.8 says that in human form,

1264. God humbled Himself by becoming obedient

1265. to the point of death, even death on a

  1266. cross.

1267. How majestic is the name of our great God.

1268. Our hymn says it so well,

1269. and when I think that God,

1270. His Son, not sparing, sent Him to die,

1271. I scarce can take it in.

1272. That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,

1273. He bled and died to take away my sin.

1274. Psalm 8 verse 5 says that God crowned Him

    Psalms 8:5

  1275. with glory and honor.

1276. God crowned Jesus Christ the new man,

1277. the firstborn of the new creation,

  1278. the second Adam,

  1279. with glory and honor.

1280. Hebrews 1.3 interprets this for us,

1281. that Jesus Christ is the radiance of the glory of God,

1282. the exact imprint of His nature,

1283. and He upholds the universe by the world,

1284. by the word of His power.

1285. After making purification for sins,

1286. Jesus Christ sat down at the right hand

1287. of the majesty on high.

1288. Jesus has fully and finally fulfilled

1289. all that God promised in Psalm 8,

1290. so that you can call Him your Lord.

1291. Philippians 2.9 says that God

  1292. has highly exalted Jesus

  1293. and bestowed on Him

  1294. God's majestic name

1295. that is above every name.

1296. Psalm 8.6 says that God has given Him dominion

1297. over the works of His hands

1298. and put all things under His feet.

  1299. Because the new creation

  1300. is inaugurated spiritually

1301. by the finished work of Christ,

1302. you can approach this great God,

  1303. our Creator.

  1304. You can know Him.

1305. You can enjoy fellowship with Him spiritually,

  1306. though it's a battle

  1307. with the remaining flesh.

  1308. So here's our exhortation.

1309. It's the first and the last verse

  1310. of Psalm 8.

  1311. The exhortation for us,

  1312. if you know Christ,

1313. is to worship His majestic name

  1314. in this life

1315. in preparation for the life to come.

1316. David calls all of God's people

  1317. to sing it.

  1318. O Lord, our Lord,

1319. how majestic is Your name

  1320. in all the earth.

1321. We worship His majestic name

  1322. in spirit now

  1323. with all of creation

  1324. confirming the gospel truth

  1325. that our Creator came

1326. to save sinners like us.

1327. And we can declare again,

1328. this is my Father's world.

1329. Why should my heart be sad?

  1330. The Lord is King.

  1331. Let the heavens ring.

  1332. God reigns.

1333. Let the earth be glad.

1334. You will feel distant from God

  1335. in this life

  1336. from time to time.

  1337. you will feel

  1338. spiritually cold

  1339. in worship.

  1340. And it's good

  1341. that we long

  1342. to be closer

  1343. and closer

  1344. and closer

  1345. to God,

  1346. our Creator.

  1347. When you worship Him,

  1348. you are fighting

  1349. in the battle.

  1350. We need to fight

  1351. to worship our God,

1352. fight against our own flesh

  1353. in private

  1354. and in public.

  1355. Worship is warfare.

  1356. I love how

  1357. Don Whitney said,

  1358. can we expect

  1359. the flames

1360. of our worship of God

  1361. to burn brightly

  1362. in public

  1363. on the Lord's day

  1364. when they barely

  1365. flicker for Him

  1366. in secret

  1367. on other days?

  1368. Worship

  1369. on this earth

  1370. will always be

  1371. warfare for us.

  1372. Hebrews 2, 5, and 6

  1373. says that there is

  1374. a world to come.

1375. There is a new heavens,

  1376. a new earth.

  1377. And it says that

  1378. God will not subject

  1379. the world to come

  1380. to angels.

  1381. That's why

  1382. Jesus Christ was

  1383. lower than the angels

  1384. becoming a man,

  1385. becoming a mediator

  1386. because it's to Him

  1387. that God will entrust

  1388. that new world

  1389. that is to come.

  1390. God has set

  1391. Jesus Christ

  1392. on His throne

  1393. of glory

  1394. above the heavens.

  1395. And soon

  1396. He will usher in

  1397. this new world.

  1398. And in the meantime,

  1399. we worship God

  1400. in spirit,

  1401. believing the truth

1402. of all that He has

  1403. revealed and fulfilled

  1404. in Jesus Christ.

  1405. How majestic

  1406. is the great name

  1407. of our Lord.

  1408. We worship now

  1409. as a fool

  1410. before the world,

  1411. trusting that

  1412. He will come

  1413. from heaven

1414. with all of His glory

  1415. unto the whole earth

  1416. one day very soon.

  1417. Philippians 2, 10

  1418. says that when

  1419. He does come,

  1420. you know this,

  1421. every knee

  1422. will bow

  1423. in heaven,

  1424. on earth,

  1425. and under the earth.

  1426. Why will they bow?

  1427. At the name

  1428. of Jesus Christ.

  1429. Worship the majestic

  1430. name of God

  1431. in this life

  1432. in preparation

  1433. for that great,

  1434. glorious life

  1435. with Him

  1436. that's to come.

1437. What will that be like?

  1438. Well, when this life

  1439. is over for you,

  1440. Christ Himself

  1441. will usher you

  1442. into His heavenly realm.

  1443. Psalm 45,

    Psalms 45:5

  1444. verse 5,

  1445. describes what that

1446. will be like this way.

  1447. It's with joy

  1448. and rejoicing

1449. that you will be brought

  1450. and you will enter

  1451. into the King's palace.

  1452. How majestic

  1453. is the great name

  1454. of our God.

  1455. Psalm 16, verse 11

    Psalms 16:11

  1456. says that

  1457. when you're there

  1458. in His glorious presence,

1459. there is fullness of joy

1460. at the right hand of God,

  1461. our pleasures

  1462. forevermore.

  1463. So you worship

  1464. His majestic name

  1465. now by faith.

  1466. By faith,

  1467. you know His kingdom

  1468. is coming.

1469. Your spirit inside of you

  1470. longs for that.

  1471. And one day,

1472. our faith will be made sight.

1473. How great is our God.

  1474. The hymn says that

  1475. when Christ shall come

  1476. with shout of acclamation

  1477. and take me home,

1478. what joy shall fill my heart.

  1479. Then I shall bow

  1480. in humble adoration

  1481. and then proclaim,

  1482. my God,

  1483. how great

  1484. thou art.

  1485. So we worship

  1486. this majestic name

  1487. of our Lord now.

  1488. It's a battle,

  1489. but it's preparing

  1490. our souls

  1491. for the world

  1492. that is to come.

  1493. If God has revealed

  1494. His majestic name

  1495. to you,

  1496. as the Father

  1497. foreordained,

  1498. as the Son

  1499. came to fully reveal,

  1500. and as the Spirit

  1501. now comes to minister

  1502. the fullness of God

  1503. to you,

  1504. then you praise

  1505. the majestic name

  1506. of the Lord,

  1507. our God,

  1508. now in preparation

  1509. for all of eternity.

  1510. Glory be to God.

1511. Would you pray with me?

  1512. O Lord,

  1513. our God,

  1514. may the majesty

1515. of your most excellent name

  1516. be on display

  1517. in our lives

  1518. and in this congregation.

  1519. We pray from Jude 1, 12,

  1520. that through Jesus Christ

  1521. our Lord,

  1522. the only God,

  1523. our Savior,

  1524. to you alone

  1525. be all glory,

  1526. majesty,

  1527. dominion,

  1528. and authority

  1529. before all time

  1530. and now

  1531. and forevermore.

  1532. Amen.
