  1. Today's sermon text is in Revelation chapter 2, very end of the Bible, Revelation chapter 2.

Revelation 2 chapter mention Revelation 2 chapter mention

  2. We'll read from verses 1 through 7.

  3. For our visitors, I'll just give some context that on the past one year as a church, we were mostly preaching through the gospel of John.

  4. We left off around John 14.

  5. Once we're finished with this series on the church, we'll pick back up where we left off and we'll finish preaching through the gospel of John.

  6. Over the summer, we also had a special little break and we looked at one psalm every Sunday.

  7. So we started at Psalm 1 and we ended with Psalm 8.

  8. Lord willing, next summer, we'll start with Psalm 9 and we'll keep that going.

  9. And so today, we'll have our fourth of seven in a series called Life in the Father's House.

  10. And that's a reference to what Jesus said in John 17, that he's going to his father's house to prepare a place for you, his church.

  11. And while we're on earth, the church is the way that God prepares us for heaven, for his father's house.

  12. Today's focus is church discipline.

  13. And that just comes because we're following through our constitution three or four pages at a time.

  14. And that's the section we got to in Sunday school.

  15. So I wanted the sermon to complement that focus.

  16. And so in our constitution, we looked at formative discipline and corrective discipline.

  17. And so as a point of reference, this text, I see it as Christ providing formative discipline, ongoing discipline as he walks among and speaks to his church.

  18. As I read this, keep in mind, we believe this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  19. It's God's very own word for you, his church.

  20. So when I'm done reading, I'll say this is the word of God.

  21. And if you believe this, you respond, thanks be to God.

  22. Revelation 2, 1 through 7.

  23. 1 through 8.

  24. Verse 3.

  25. And as born and as patience for my name's sake, you have labored and has not fainted.

  26. Verse 4.

  27. Nevertheless, I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love.

  28. Remember, therefore, from whence thou art fallen and repent and do the first works,

  29. or else I will come unto thee quickly and will remove thy candlestick out of this place, except thou repent.

  30. But this thou hast, that thou hast hated the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

  31. Verse 7.

  32. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

  33. To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

  34. This is the word of the Lord.

  35. Thanks be to God.

  36. Thanks be to God.

  37. You may be seated.

  38. The Bible says that the grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord, it endures forever.

  39. Let's pray.

  40. Father, we ask that you will give the eyes of faith and the ears of faith.

  41. That though we're in this world that's fallen, and though the darkness hides you,

  42. that by the power of your Holy Spirit, you will open our eyes to behold the glory of Jesus Christ

  43. as he ministers to his church.

  44. That you will minister here yourself, Lord Jesus.

  45. We pray, Lord, that we can hear the gospel,

  46. that we can hear the truth that Jesus Christ desires for his church,

  47. from his throne room in heaven,

  48. and from his ministry as the great high priest.

  49. We ask all of this for your glory alone,

  50. and for Christ's sake.

  51. Amen.

  52. Beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  53. my prayer for you and for me today is simply that we would see Christ discipling his church.

  54. We read the word, you hear the word,

  55. but in Revelation, when John hears the voice, he sees a vision.

  56. That's why I think it's appropriate that we would ask the Lord to help us to see Christ

  57. through his word as it's ministered from this glorious text.

  58. And to see how Christ disciples his church.

  59. Let me ask you that question.

  60. What do you think?

  61. How long does Christ need to disciple his church?

  62. How long does Christ disciple you?

  63. I read this week of a young man as a teenager,

  64. and he lived in England in the countryside,

  65. later moved into London.

  66. His name was Robert Robinson.

  67. As a teenager, he and his buddies were mocking this lady who was on the street,

  68. and she was known to make predictions,

  69. and so they went around to mock her and ask her what the prediction was,

  70. and she looked at this man, Robinson,

  71. and said that one day your grandkids will know how to read,

  72. which was more than he could say for himself or his entire family.

  73. But that stirred in his mind,

  74. and it actually led him to go hear a preacher preach for the first time.

  75. It happened that that preacher was George Whitefield,

  76. the first great awakening evangelist.

  77. And the Lord did not save Robinson when he first heard the gospel,

  78. but the gospel, like Pilgrim's Progress, it worked on him for three years,

  79. and his own sin became like a burden on his back.

  80. And later, the Lord saved this man and brought him into a church to be discipled.

  81. The church he was taken into was the church in London.

  82. The pastor at the time was John Gill.

  83. John Gill came about 100 years before Charles Spurgeon in that same church.

  84. The reason I tell you about Robinson,

  85. after he was saved, after he was discipled in a wonderful church for many, many years,

  86. he wrote this hymn, and the hymn begins this way.

  87. Prone to wonder, Lord, I feel it.

  88. Prone to leave the God I love.

  89. Is your heart prone to wonder like Robinson?

  90. I know mine is.

  91. And doesn't that thought terrify you?

  92. So for how long does Christ disciple you?

  93. Think about the perspective of our author here to give some context on Revelation.

  94. It comes from the pen of the Apostle John.

  95. John was most likely the youngest of all the disciples of Jesus

  96. who walked with him in his ministry for three years.

  97. And John, his last thoughts before our Lord Jesus was crucified

  98. was of all of the disciples wandering away from Christ,

  99. forsaking him and abandoning Jesus.

  100. They did not love Jesus to the end, did they?

  101. And maybe that's why the main message on John's tongue

  102. that he wanted to preach or that he wanted to put in every epistle

  103. and in his gospel, the main message is that Christ loves you to the end.

  104. For how long do you need to be discipled?

  105. Look at our sermon text, verse 4.

  106. Verse 4 is the heart of this passage.

  107. And not only do I want us to see where the church in Ephesus needed reprimand,

  108. I want us to see how Christ discipled them and brought that to them.

  109. In verse 4, John writes,

  110. You, church of Ephesus,

  111. you abandoned the love you had at first.

  112. Remember and repent.

  113. So we need Jesus Christ to disciple us,

  114. to call us to himself,

  115. for as long as our hearts are prone to wonder, don't we?

  116. That's how long Christ keeps discipling the church.

  117. The word discipleship, according to the Oxford Dictionary,

  118. it comes from the Old English, a Latin phrase,

  119. or a Latin word called discipulus,

  120. and it means a learner.

  121. A learner, and it comes from the term to discern.

  122. So what was it that John learned?

  123. He was a disciple of Christ.

  124. Well, when John introduces himself in the Gospel of John,

  125. he doesn't say I'm the last living apostle.

  126. He doesn't say I'm the senior pastor

  127. at the wealthiest, most prominent church,

  128. which was the church of Ephesus.

  129. He says,

  130. I am the one whom Jesus loved.

  131. That's all you need to know about me.

  132. I ran away from Christ,

  133. and he loved me to the end.

  134. All of John's letters

  135. elevate the theme of love

  136. more than any other New Testament writer.

  137. To give a comparison,

  138. 1 Corinthians uses the word love 15 times,

  139. and that's our glorious love chapter.

  140. But by comparison,

  141. the Gospel of John uses that word

  142. of the love of God

  143. and to love his people 39 times.

  144. And in that short little epistle

  145. called 1 John,

  146. 26 times he writes

  147. for the church to have that love.

  148. John's main point

  149. is stated really well

  150. in that epistle,

  151. 1 John 3.1.

  152. He says,

  153. See what kind of love

  154. the Father has given to us

  155. that we should be called

  156. children of God.

  157. And so we are.

  158. See, it's the love of God

  159. shown in Christ.

  160. You get to belong

  161. to the family of God.

  162. If you're a Christian,

  163. by the love of God,

  164. you are in the house

  165. of the Father.

  166. Well now,

  167. this vision that he gets

  168. in Revelation,

  169. it comes from banishment

  170. to the island of Patmos.

  171. Most likely before this time,

  172. tradition has it

  173. that John had been

  174. taken and tortured,

  175. a boiling vat of oil,

  176. and he was dipped inside of that

  177. and pulled back out

  178. before he could die.

  179. So there's this old,

  180. disfigured man

  181. with chronic pain

  182. in exile,

  183. away from the church.

  184. But by God's grace,

  185. the Lord,

  186. he says,

  187. I'm worshiping on the Lord's day

  188. and I'm in the Spirit.

  189. And what God gives him

  190. in Revelation 1.17

  191. is a vision of heaven itself

  192. opened up.

  193. John writes,

  194. I saw Jesus.

  195. I fell at his feet

  196. as though dead.

  197. What was it that Jesus said to him?

  198. Fear not.

  199. I am the first and the last,

  200. the living one.

  201. I died and behold,

  202. I am alive forevermore.

  203. And I have the keys

  204. of death and Hades.

  205. Verse 19,

  206. write therefore these things

  207. that you have seen,

  208. those that are,

  209. and those that are

  210. to take place

  211. after this.

  212. And so we come to our sermon text

  213. and what I want to walk you through

  214. are five descriptions

  215. that John gives

  216. to all the churches

  217. of how Jesus disciples his church.

  218. The first one is this.

  219. See how close Christ is

  220. to his church.

  221. By the language John uses,

  222. we see that Jesus Christ

  223. is very, very close to his church.

  224. Three evidences from the text.

  225. First,

  226. John tells us

  227. that it is Christ himself

  228. who speaks to his church.

  229. Look at verse 1.

  230. Revelation 2,

    Revelation 2:1

  231. verse 1.

  232. To the angel,

  233. the word angel is messenger,

  234. of the church in Ephesus,

  235. write the words of him.

  236. The Lord Jesus Christ

  237. wants John

  238. to write these letters

  239. telling the church,

  240. Jesus Christ speaks to you.

  241. that phrase,

  242. the words of him.

  243. It's used 60 times

  244. in the minor prophets.

  245. You've heard it translated,

  246. thus saith the Lord.

  247. Jesus Christ

  248. is the final prophet.

  249. And he stands

  250. from his throne in heaven

  251. as prophet

  252. speaking to his church.

  253. How close is Jesus?

  254. He speaks

  255. through his word

  256. to his church.

  257. Jesus is acting

  258. like one of those

  259. minor prophet

  260. covenant prosecutors.

  261. But he's not

  262. prosecuting

  263. the Mosaic covenant.

  264. He's shepherding.

  265. He's using words

  266. of encouragement

  267. and words of exhortation

  268. to shepherd his church

  269. in the covenant of grace

  270. until they're ready

  271. for heaven with him.

  272. And it's words

  273. of encouragement

  274. and exhortation

  275. because we need both,

  276. don't we?

  277. That's how our Lord Jesus

  278. speaks to his church.

  279. Why is he telling

  280. these words

  281. to the church in Ephesus?

  282. Think about

  283. what a powerful church

  284. this is.

  285. The apostle John

  286. became the elder

  287. of the church in Ephesus.

  288. Can you think of that?

  289. You know,

  290. the longest living apostle now,

  291. one of the elders,

  292. shepherding,

  293. preaching to the church

  294. in Ephesus.

  295. Apollos,

  296. a very gifted

  297. man of rhetoric

  298. who was discipled

  299. on the side

  300. and then came back

  301. preaching the glorious gospel.

  302. He was a preacher

  303. to the church in Ephesus.

  304. Paul was a pastor

  305. or at least apostle

  306. ministering and preaching

  307. and teaching

  308. in Ephesus

  309. for three years.

  310. And when Paul left,

  311. you know who he left

  312. as the pastor,

  313. one of the elders

  314. to preach to the church

  315. in Ephesus.

  316. It was Timothy.

  317. This is the church

  318. we're talking about.

  319. A mature,

  320. well-established church

  321. that had been discipled

  322. through Christ's messengers

  323. one after the other.

  324. And yet,

  325. they still need Christ

  326. to disciple them now.

  327. They didn't arrive

  328. after all of that.

  329. Now,

  330. don't think that this message

  331. is only for one church

  332. at that time in history.

  333. Look at verse 7

  334. of our sermon text.

  335. He who has an ear,

  336. let him hear

  337. what the Spirit says

  338. to the churches.

  339. So,

  340. from the island of Patmos,

  341. the closest church

  342. would have been

  343. the church in Ephesus,

  344. right off the coast.

  345. And then,

  346. the Roman courier circuit

  347. would have included

  348. these seven churches

  349. in this exact order.

  350. Why seven?

  351. Well,

  352. there are many more

  353. than seven,

  354. and these letters

  355. were to be circulated

  356. among all of them.

  357. Seven represents

  358. the number of completeness

  359. and fullness.

  360. So,

  361. by addressing

  362. individual churches,

  363. he's lifting up

  364. like case studies

  365. for all of the churches,

  366. even those who have

  367. an ear to hear now.

  368. This is the ministry

  369. of God to you, church.

  370. My first application

  371. is that Christ

  372. actively speaks

  373. to his church

  374. every day.

  375. Whoever has an ear

  376. to hear

  377. must hear

  378. the words of Jesus Christ.

  379. He is close to you,

  380. and he speaks.

  381. So,

  382. what the church needs today,

  383. just as much as ever before,

  384. to use the phrase

  385. from Haggai 113,

  386. is the Lord's messenger

  387. in the Lord's message.

  388. He speaks

  389. through his messengers

  390. at every faithful

  391. biblical church

  392. the message

  393. of Jesus Christ

  394. himself.

  395. You see how close

  396. Christ is to his church?

  397. He speaks to his church.

  398. Second evidence

  399. of how close Christ is

  400. is that he holds

  401. his church.

  402. Verse 1

  403. describes Jesus

  404. as he who holds

  405. the seven stars

  406. in his right hand.

  407. In each of these

  408. addresses

  409. to these seven churches,

  410. there's a little prologue.

  411. It describes the speaker.

  412. It describes Christ.

  413. And each prologue

  414. has a point.

  415. And the point

  416. is customized

  417. to what that church,

  418. that congregation

  419. needs to hear.

  420. To give you an example,

  421. the church in Smyrna

  422. was persecuted.

  423. And what Jesus

  424. tells them

  425. that they need to hear

  426. is a message

  427. from he who died

  428. and came to life.

  429. You're persecuted.

  430. You're going to be martyred.

  431. Hear the message

  432. from him who died first

  433. for you

  434. and came to life.

  435. His resurrection

  436. is your hope.

  437. To the church

  438. in Pergamum

  439. in the prologue,

  440. they had allowed

  441. false teaching

  442. and heresy

  443. to creep in.

  444. And the message

  445. to them is this.

  446. It's the words of him

  447. who has the sharp

  448. two-edged sword.

  449. In Ephesians,

  450. back to Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  451. chapter 6

  452. tells us

  453. that's the sword

  454. of the Spirit,

  455. the Word of God.

  456. That's what they need.

  457. So what is the message

  458. to the church

  459. of Ephesus?

  460. What is it

  461. that they need to hear?

  462. In verse 1,

  463. it's that Christ,

  464. he is the one

  465. who holds

  466. the seven stars

  467. in his right hand.

  468. Jesus Christ

  469. holds the messenger.

  470. He holds

  471. the spiritual

  472. representation

  473. of every congregation

  474. in his right hand

  475. in heaven.

  476. They need to hear

  477. that this is

  478. Christ's church.

  479. Christ

  480. is the one

  481. who holds it.

  482. I think that

  483. this is an inference,

  484. but my best guess

  485. is that the church

  486. in Ephesus,

  487. based on what comes next,

  488. they might have been

  489. tempted to think

  490. that the kingdom

  491. of Christ

  492. on earth

  493. will rise or fall

  494. on them.

  495. Think of all those

  496. who had preached to them.

  497. Think of how well

  498. established this church

  499. was.

  500. They need to hear

  501. Christ

  502. holds his church.

  503. It is not

  504. by your works

  505. that anyone

  506. will be saved.

  507. You be faithful

  508. and you serve

  509. in the church

  510. out of love for Christ

  511. because he is the one

  512. who holds you, church,

  513. and there is no amount

  514. of manly effort

  515. that you can bring

  516. to the table

  517. because if you lose

  518. the love for Christ,

  519. your lamp

  520. will go out.

  521. It is Christ's church.

  522. You cannot hold it

  523. all together

  524. by your own strength.

  525. Isn't that a relief

  526. to us?

  527. It is Christ

  528. who holds his church.

  529. And with that also

  530. is the promise

  531. that no matter

  532. what happens

  533. to his church

  534. on earth,

  535. spiritually,

  536. we are held

  537. by Christ.

  538. He holds us

  539. in his hands

  540. and we are persecuted

  541. but we are united

  542. to Christ.

  543. In the week ahead,

  544. the next five days,

  545. each of us

  546. in our different industries

  547. and lines of work,

  548. we will go through

  549. hardship.

  550. In this world,

  551. we will have trouble,

  552. various kinds.

  553. Christ holds you

  554. because in Christ

  555. you are united

  556. to God himself.

  557. We get this promise

  558. in 1 Corinthians 6,

  559. 15, and 17.

  560. Your bodies

  561. are the members

  562. of Christ

  563. and he that is

  564. joined to Christ

  565. is one

  566. spirit.

  567. You and I

  568. are only truly

  569. held by Christ

  570. if we enjoy

  571. that union

  572. with Jesus himself

  573. as mediator.

  574. The third evidence

  575. that Jesus is very

  576. close to his church

  577. is that he walks

  578. among his church.

  579. Look at verse 1 again.

  580. Jesus describes himself

  581. as one

  582. who walks

  583. among

  584. the seven

  585. golden

  586. lampstands.

  587. this is a word

  588. picture of the

  589. menorah.

  590. The menorah

  591. was the seven

  592. lamps

  593. that were set

  594. in the holy

  595. place

  596. so that the

  597. priest would go in

  598. and trim the wick

  599. and clean up the wax

  600. and add oil

  601. so they would be

  602. continually burning.

  603. And the purpose

  604. of these

  605. seven lamps

  606. was to light

  607. the way

  608. into the holy

  609. of holies.

  610. So Jesus

  611. is describing

  612. himself

  613. as the high

  614. priest

  615. who ministers

  616. as a high

  617. priest

  618. leading you

  619. by the light

  620. of his work

  621. to the holy

  622. of holies

  623. itself.

  624. That's who

  625. Jesus is.

  626. He's the one

  627. who walks

  628. among his

  629. church.

  630. He is the

  631. great final

  632. and everlasting

  633. high priest.

  634. Church,

  635. it is Christ

  636. who trims us.

  637. It's Christ

  638. who pours the

  639. oil of his

  640. Holy Spirit

  641. in us,

  642. in our lives,

  643. our hearts,

  644. in a congregation.

  645. He is the one

  646. who keeps the

  647. lamp burning.

  648. He ministers.

  649. He prays God.

  650. Do you see

  651. how close

  652. Jesus is

  653. to his church?

  654. The second thing

  655. I invite you

  656. to see here

  657. is how well

  658. Christ knows

  659. his church.

  660. He is so close

  661. to his church

  662. and he knows

  663. his church

  664. so well.

  665. in verse

  666. two we read

  667. Jesus says

  668. to the church

  669. I know

  670. your works,

  671. your toil,

  672. and your

  673. patient endurance.

  674. He gives this

  675. list of three

  676. and it's called

  677. a triad.

  678. He gives three

  679. of those.

  680. So three triads.

  681. This is the first

  682. one.

  683. I know your works,

  684. your toil,

  685. and your patient

  686. endurance.

  687. that's how

  688. the church

  689. of Ephesus

  690. was known.

  691. Christ says

  692. I see you

  693. getting up early.

  694. I see you

  695. arriving

  696. and going

  697. the extra mile.

  698. I see you

  699. sweating

  700. and laboring

  701. alongside one

  702. another.

  703. I see how

  704. you heard

  705. my message

  706. and you've

  707. been living

  708. it out.

  709. The message

  710. in Ephesians,

  711. the same church

  712. Ephesians 4.28

  713. was labor.

  714. Do honest

  715. work with

  716. your own

  717. hands

  718. and share

  719. with anyone

  720. in need.

  721. And it seems

  722. like the Ephesian

  723. church was

  724. obeying that.

  725. Paul had

  726. written to

  727. Timothy.

  728. Paul probably

  729. worked anyone

  730. under the ground.

  731. Paul was a

  732. hard worker.

  733. And Paul

  734. admonished

  735. Timothy,

  736. though he was

  737. weak and frail

  738. in the body,

  739. Timothy,

  740. labor in

  741. preaching and

  742. teaching.

  743. Christ sees

  744. the toil of

  745. his church.

  746. What else

  747. does Christ

  748. know?

  749. Well,

  750. Christ commends

  751. his church

  752. for also

  753. hating what

  754. Jesus hates.

  755. Look at

  756. verse 6.

  757. He says,

  758. this you have,

  759. you hate the

  760. works of the

  761. Nicolaitans,

  762. which I also

  763. hate.

  764. And Christ

  765. commends them

  766. for this.

  767. The Nicolaitans

  768. was a heresy

  769. and it got

  770. long gospel

  771. wrong.

  772. Nothing new

  773. under the sun,

  774. right?

  775. We get long

  776. gospel wrong,

  777. all kinds of

  778. problems creep

  779. into the church.

  780. The Nicolaitans

  781. had said that

  782. there is a

  783. special type

  784. of enlightenment

  785. that some

  786. people can access

  787. and when you

  788. do that,

  789. it doesn't

  790. matter how

  791. you live.

  792. So it led

  793. to licentiousness

  794. and all kinds

  795. of evil sin

  796. and the

  797. Ephesian church

  798. says,

  799. no,

  800. that's not

  801. what the

  802. apostles revealed,

  803. that's not

  804. what God

  805. gave in his

  806. word,

  807. that's not

  808. what our

  809. Bible says.

  810. Paul had

  811. been there

  812. for three

  813. years and

  814. he is using

  815. disciplined

  816. language by

  817. saying this.

  818. He's saying,

  819. it's right for

  820. a biblical church

  821. that knows the

  822. Bible well,

  823. it's right for

  824. such a church

  825. to hate what

  826. Christ hates.

  827. When there is

  828. false teaching

  829. that's harmful,

  830. you need to

  831. hate that.

  832. He's saying this

  833. is a good thing.

  834. Why?

  835. Because I hate

  836. that,

  837. says Jesus.

  838. They're preaching

  839. a lesser gospel.

  840. They're distorting

  841. the good news

  842. and they're distorting

  843. all that I have

  844. revealed in my

  845. word.

  846. You need to

  847. know my word

  848. and it's good

  849. that you hate

  850. heresy.

  851. So Christ knows

  852. that they worked

  853. hard,

  854. he knows that

  855. they hated the

  856. right things

  857. and in verse

  858. two he says,

  859. you cannot bear

  860. with those who

  861. are evil but

  862. have tested

  863. those who

  864. call themselves

  865. apostles and

  866. are not and

  867. found them to

  868. be false.

  869. That's our

  870. second triad.

  871. Let me give

  872. some context

  873. to this.

  874. There was so

  875. much corrupted

  876. living in the

  877. city of Ephesus.

  878. The temple in

  879. Ephesus was called

  880. the temple of

  881. Diana and people

  882. would come from

  883. all over the

  884. world to worship

  885. the goddess

  886. Diana which

  887. would then,

  888. it was syncretism

  889. where it was

  890. combined with

  891. Greek mythology

  892. as well.

  893. So like the

  894. twin sister of

  895. Apollo got

  896. merged with

  897. Diana and it

  898. was the goddess

  899. of fertility.

  900. So around this

  901. temple were all

  902. kinds of sexual

  903. practices that

  904. were extremely

  905. perverse.

  906. There were

  907. those who would

  908. take the silver

  909. and make it into

  910. little statues so

  911. all these pilgrims

  912. who came to

  913. worship at the

  914. temple of Diana

  915. could take back

  916. a silver souvenir.

  917. Well when the

  918. gospel arrived in

  919. Ephesus they wanted

  920. to kill Paul

  921. because the

  922. gospel undermined

  923. this entire

  924. industry.

  925. And because

  926. there was so

  927. much worship

  928. and people

  929. giving money

  930. to the temple

  931. of Diana

  932. it became a

  933. banking system

  934. so it was like

  935. the London of

  936. all of Asia

  937. Minor.

  938. And Paul had

  939. written to them

  940. those who go

  941. the way of the

  942. world and those

  943. who bow down

  944. their knee to

  945. Diana this goddess

  946. of perversity.

  947. It's Satan.

  948. It's represented

  949. in Revelation as

  950. Babylon and other

  951. things.

  952. You are choosing

  953. idolatry over the

  954. love of the true

  955. God.

  956. You're rejecting

  957. the love of Christ

  958. and you're turning

  959. to adultery.

  960. And so he's

  961. admonishing the

  962. church to you

  963. need to discipline

  964. within the church

  965. any that are

  966. loving an idol

  967. more than they're

  968. loving Christ.

  969. If they're loving

  970. their sin more

  971. than they love

  972. the Lord Jesus

  973. their Savior

  974. it's right for the

  975. church to test that

  976. and to call it

  977. false and to not

  978. bear with that

  979. evil anymore.

  980. It's right for the

  981. church to do

  982. that.

  983. Well Christ

  984. he knows their

  985. toil he knows

  986. they hate the

  987. right things and

  988. he also commends

  989. them for patient

  990. endurance for his

  991. name's sake.

  992. This is the third

  993. and final triad in

  994. verse 3.

  995. Jesus says to the

  996. church in Ephesus

  997. I know you are

  998. enduring patiently

  999. and bearing up for

  1000. my name's sake and

  1001. you have not

  1002. grown weary.

  1003. Praise God.

  1004. In Ephesians 4

  1005. they had been told

1006. as we are to walk

  1007. in a manner worthy

  1008. of Christ's calling.

  1009. Do you remember

  1010. that last week?

  1011. And they're to walk

  1012. with all humility

  1013. and gentleness and

  1014. patience bearing with

  1015. one another in love

  1016. and the Lord Jesus

  1017. Christ saw them obey

1018. what he told them by

  1019. the spirit and he

  1020. commends them for

  1021. doing just that.

  1022. You have been walking

  1023. together as I called

  1024. you to do.

  1025. We've seen how close

  1026. Christ is to his

1027. church and we see how

  1028. well Christ knows

  1029. his church.

  1030. Number three, see

  1031. what Christ cares

  1032. most about for

  1033. his church.

  1034. Verse 4.

  1035. The words of the

  1036. Lord Jesus Christ.

  1037. Church, I have

  1038. this against you

  1039. that you have

  1040. abandoned the love

  1041. you had at first.

  1042. He brings correction.

  1043. He brings exhortation.

  1044. But there were nine

  1045. words of encouragement,

  1046. specific affirmation

  1047. to this church.

1048. Nine of them to one

  1049. correction.

  1050. That's the ratio

  1051. Jesus sets up.

1052. Who are we to make

  1053. up a different ratio

  1054. than that, right?

  1055. We should always be

  1056. speaking the truth

  1057. in love, encouraging

  1058. one another, building

  1059. one another up.

  1060. And when we need

1061. to, there can be a

  1062. place for correction,

  1063. but it's wrapped in

  1064. so much love and

  1065. specific affirmation

  1066. that it's not

  1067. critiquing and it's

  1068. not nitpicking and

  1069. it's not discouraging.

  1070. I'm convicted of my

  1071. flesh and my tendency

  1072. to bring any

  1073. correction that way.

1074. I need to learn from

  1075. the example of the

  1076. Lord Jesus.

  1077. This is how he

  1078. disciples.

  1079. This is how he

  1080. disciplines his

  1081. church.

  1082. There's a tradition,

  1083. I'm not sure, you

1084. know, if this is, you

  1085. can prove it anywhere,

  1086. but, you know, the

1087. message in 1 John is

  1088. little children love

  1089. one another.

  1090. And the one historian

  1091. has it that the

  1092. apostle John, before

  1093. he got exiled, he

  1094. had been imprisoned

1095. and he had to, you

  1096. know, leave Ephesus,

1097. but he didn't get to

  1098. come back one last

1099. time as an old man.

  1100. And what did he

  1101. preach to them?

  1102. He said, little

  1103. children of Ephesus,

  1104. love one another.

  1105. And that's the theme

  1106. that's on John's

  1107. heart as an apostle

  1108. and it's not because

  1109. it's John's idea,

  1110. that's because that's

  1111. what Jesus taught

  1112. John.

  1113. And that's what the

  1114. Lord Jesus himself

1115. had to say to the

  1116. church in Ephesus.

  1117. Love one another.

  1118. John Owen makes a

  1119. good observation and

  1120. I don't know of

  1121. anyone who gets law

  1122. and gospel better

  1123. than John Owen,

  1124. at least more

  1125. thoroughly than

  1126. John Owen.

  1127. And he said that

  1128. some abandoned their

  1129. first love for

  1130. Christ because they

  1131. think that abiding

  1132. in Christ is a

  1133. plant that needs

  1134. neither watering,

  1135. fertilizing, or

  1136. pruning, but that

  1137. will thrive to

  1138. itself.

  1139. Have you fallen

  1140. into that?

  1141. Well, we know it's

  1142. true from Ephesians

  1143. 2.8 that by grace

  1144. we have been saved

  1145. through faith and

1146. this is not our own

  1147. doing, it is the

  1148. gift of God.

  1149. Amen.

  1150. We're not saved by

  1151. works that no man

  1152. should boast.

1153. But in verse 4 of

  1154. Revelation 2, we read

1155. that they had a love

  1156. at the beginning

  1157. that they no longer

  1158. have now.

  1159. The word there is

  1160. that the love that

  1161. you had, and that

  1162. verb is possession,

  1163. to have a love.

  1164. The Greek term, it

  1165. brings all these

  1166. connotations.

  1167. It means to have

  1168. and to hold.

1169. It's to possess in your

1170. mind in a way that

  1171. agitates the emotions.

  1172. It's to cherish, to

  1173. hold fast, to keep,

  1174. and to highly regard.

  1175. That's how they

  1176. viewed the Lord Jesus

  1177. when He first saved

  1178. them out of their

  1179. sin.

  1180. That's how they

  1181. viewed one another

  1182. when they first got

  1183. started.

  1184. But somewhere along

  1185. the way, by not

  1186. watering and

  1187. fertilizing and

  1188. tending to that

  1189. love, it was

  1190. abandoned.

  1191. It was neglected.

  1192. That little plant of

  1193. their love, the

  1194. leaves are starting

  1195. to turn yellow.

  1196. You can see some

  1197. other stuff starting

  1198. to grow.

  1199. It's smaller.

  1200. It seems dried up.

  1201. And the Lord Jesus

  1202. is the gardener, and

  1203. He's walking in the

  1204. midst, and He says,

1205. you need to tend to

  1206. this.

  1207. You love because I

  1208. first loved you.

  1209. now grow in my

  1210. love.

  1211. He gospels them

  1212. back to that kind

  1213. of love.

  1214. He gospels His

  1215. church.

  1216. They need to

  1217. remember how the

  1218. letter of Ephesians

  1219. began.

  1220. Ephesians 1.5,

  1221. In love God

  1222. predestined us for

  1223. adoption to

  1224. Himself as sons

  1225. through Jesus

  1226. Christ.

1227. How in love He did

  1228. that.

  1229. Ephesians 1.15,

  1230. Paul encourages the

  1231. church at that

  1232. stage.

  1233. He says, I have

  1234. heard of your

  1235. faith in the Lord

  1236. Jesus, and I have

  1237. heard of your love

  1238. toward all the

  1239. saints.

  1240. You need to get

  1241. back to that place.

  1242. You need to do

  1243. that again.

  1244. So fourth, I want

  1245. us to see together

  1246. how Christ

  1247. disciplines His

  1248. church.

  1249. Three observations

  1250. on how Christ

  1251. disciplines.

  1252. look at verse

  1253. five.

  1254. Remember, therefore,

  1255. from where you

  1256. have fallen.

  1257. Jesus doesn't

  1258. say, think about

  1259. how you fell or

  1260. why you fell.

  1261. He says, remember

  1262. from where you

  1263. fell.

  1264. Think back.

  1265. Recall.

  1266. Remember, therefore,

  1267. from where you

  1268. have fallen.

  1269. Put your sight on

  1270. that.

  1271. That's what I've

  1272. called you to.

  1273. Grow back into

  1274. that.

  1275. It's going to take

  1276. work.

  1277. It can't be

  1278. neglected and

  1279. abandoned.

  1280. You must grow into

  1281. that.

  1282. Remember that vision

  1283. I have for you.

1284. I was trying to think

  1285. of a good illustration

  1286. of this.

  1287. And I picture a

  1288. family going on a

  1289. hike up a climb.

  1290. And I'm not going

1291. to put an age on

  1292. this child who

  1293. loses the love,

  1294. okay, but you can

  1295. picture whatever you

  1296. need to.

  1297. One of the children

  1298. in this family is

  1299. still walking along,

  1300. but they are

  1301. emotionally checked

  1302. out.

  1303. They're still taking

  1304. the steps, but they

  1305. are very bothered by

  1306. their sibling.

  1307. They don't want to

  1308. share their water.

  1309. They're not enjoying

  1310. this.

  1311. They're just putting

1312. one foot in front of

  1313. the other out of

  1314. duty.

  1315. Remember what it

  1316. was like when we

  1317. first started, when

  1318. there was more shade,

  1319. when the dirt smelled

  1320. good and wet, and

  1321. when you're having fun

  1322. jumping up on the

  1323. boulders and back

  1324. down.

  1325. Remember that.

  1326. That's how we want

  1327. it to be.

1328. We need to get back

  1329. to that.

  1330. And the Lord Jesus

  1331. next says not only

  1332. remember it, but he

  1333. calls them to take

  1334. action.

  1335. He calls his church

  1336. to repent in verse

  1337. five.

  1338. Repent and do the

  1339. works you did at

  1340. first.

  1341. A mature, well

  1342. established, well

  1343. taught church needs

  1344. to repent.

  1345. They need to return

  1346. to the love that

  1347. Christ first put in

  1348. their hearts.

  1349. He says to them,

  1350. you are mature, you

  1351. have sound doctrine,

  1352. and you have worked

  1353. hard for a long

  1354. time.

1355. But now you need to

  1356. preach the gospel to

  1357. yourselves again.

1358. You need to have joy

  1359. in all those little

  1360. things like you used

  1361. to.

  1362. Remember the gospel,

  1363. church.

  1364. Never forget that.

  1365. Ephesians 2, 3

  1366. through 5.

1367. You once lived in the

  1368. passions of your flesh.

  1369. That's who you were.

  1370. You were carrying out

1371. the desires of the body

  1372. and of the mind.

1373. And you were by nature

  1374. children of wrath,

  1375. like the rest of

  1376. mankind.

  1377. Have you forgotten

  1378. that that's what you

  1379. were?

1380. But God, being rich in

  1381. mercy because of the

  1382. great love with which

1383. he loved us, even when

1384. we were dead in our

  1385. trespasses, made us

  1386. alive together with

  1387. Christ.

  1388. That's what God did

  1389. because he is love.

1390. And if you think of the

1391. gospel, it will be a

  1392. reflex to obey.

1393. You will do the works

  1394. you did at first.

  1395. At first, remember how

  1396. you used to serve

  1397. others.

  1398. You used to have

  1399. someone else over to

  1400. your home.

  1401. You used to encourage

  1402. others, even when you

  1403. were tired yourself.

1404. You will do those works

  1405. again when you gospel

  1406. yourself back through

  1407. this.

1408. When you ask God to

1409. fill you with his love

1410. because you ran out on

1411. your own, you will do

  1412. all those little things

  1413. again.

1414. And God will bring your

1415. joy back into your heart

1416. as you serve one another.

  1417. It's an expression of

  1418. your love for him.

  1419. How else does Christ

  1420. disciple and discipline

  1421. his church?

  1422. He uses covenantal

  1423. terms.

1424. He brings them curses and

  1425. blessings.

  1426. Like an Old Testament

  1427. prophet, like Moses said

  1428. this pattern in Deuteronomy

  1429. 28 and 29.

1430. If you go this path that

1431. leads to death, there are

  1432. warnings.

1433. There is eternity at stake.

1434. But if you walk the

  1435. narrow way, there are

  1436. blessings for those who

  1437. belong to Christ.

1438. He lays out curses for

  1439. disobedience and blessings

  1440. for obedience.

  1441. Jesus is a covenant

  1442. prosecutor.

1443. What is the curse or the

  1444. threat that he brings

  1445. them for disobedience?

  1446. Look at verse 6.

1447. If you do not remember

1448. and do not do those

1449. works, I will come to

  1450. you.

  1451. Jesus Christ himself will

1452. come to his church and

  1453. remove your lampstand from

  1454. its place unless you

  1455. repent.

  1456. That means that that

  1457. congregation's light in

  1458. heaven will be

  1459. extinguished.

1460. Their lamp will be turned

  1461. off.

  1462. Let me clarify.

  1463. I don't see anywhere here

  1464. that necessitates this to

  1465. be referring to an

  1466. individual losing their

  1467. salvation.

  1468. I see this as

  1469. congregational accountability.

  1470. That congregation, the

  1471. doors will be closed.

1472. It will become a junior

  1473. college.

  1474. church.

1475. The work of Jesus as

1476. prophet and as priest is

1477. to fill the lamp with

1478. oil, the Holy Spirit, the

1479. love of God to trim and to

1480. manage it, maintain it so

1481. that it does burn brightly

1482. pointing the way to the

  1483. Holy of Holies.

1484. When a church does not do

1485. those things for which God

1486. intended it to do, what

  1487. purpose does it have?

  1488. It should shut down.

  1489. It's Jesus himself who

  1490. brings judgment and his

  1491. judgment starts with the

  1492. church.

  1493. When Christ comes, his

1494. second coming, it will be a

  1495. day of terror.

1496. And the ones who should

1497. tremble the most are those

1498. who are in a church.

1499. You need to look around and

1500. be ready for that day within

  1501. whatever church you're at.

1502. He begins his judgment with

  1503. his own people.

  1504. 1 John 4.20

1505. If anyone says, I love God

1506. and hates his brother, he

  1507. is a liar.

1508. For he who does not love

1509. his brother whom he has

1510. seen cannot love God whom

  1511. he has not seen.

  1512. That's why it's so important

1513. to remember the love, the

1514. union you have in Christ.

1515. It will play itself out in

  1516. all your other relationships.

1517. All those works that I'm

  1518. calling you to do, that's a

  1519. simple expression of whether

1520. or not you belong to Christ.

  1521. Revelation 3.19

1522. He reminds them, it's those

  1523. whom I love, I reprove

  1524. and discipline, Jesus says.

1525. So be zealous and repent.

1526. And I will praise God if

1527. right now he's convicting you

1528. like he's convicted me this

  1529. week and again now.

  1530. I need to repent.

1531. I need to remember that love.

  1532. Praise God.

1533. Because that means that Christ

  1534. loves you.

  1535. He reproves and disciplines

1536. you if he loves you.

1537. What does this mean for

  1538. congregational church

  1539. discipline?

1540. That's our focus in the

1541. series a little bit with

  1542. Sunday school.

  1543. Well Hebrews 13.17

1544. is the admonition that the

  1545. elders of each congregation

1546. are to keep watch over your

1547. souls as those who will give

  1548. an account to Christ

  1549. Christ himself.

  1550. Church discipline has Christ

1551. in mind from the very

1552. beginning to the very end.

1553. We will give an account to

1554. Christ for every single soul

1555. entrusted to the care of a

  1556. congregation.

1557. And if the congregation as a

1558. whole has gone so far from

  1559. forgetting Christ, they deserve

  1560. to be shut down.

1561. Let that congregation close its

  1562. doors.

  1563. That's what Jesus says.

  1564. He'll do it himself.

1565. The church is the dwelling

1566. place of God in Christ.

1567. So church life is life in

  1568. God's house.

1569. He judges his own house first.

1570. So what do you pray?

1571. What's your response with the

1572. thought of Christ coming to

  1573. judge and his judgment

  1574. beginning within his own

  1575. church?

1576. Let's go back to that hymn.

1577. Prone to wonder, Lord, I feel

  1578. it.

1579. Prone to leave the God I love.

  1580. Take my heart, Lord.

1581. Take and seal it with your

1582. Holy Spirit in thy courts

  1583. above.

  1584. I don't trust myself with my

  1585. heart, with my soul.

  1586. Seal me, Lord.

1587. May your Holy Spirit live in me

1588. and fill me so that I don't

  1589. need to question that.

1590. Do I belong to you?

1591. Your Spirit will reassure me of

  1592. that.

1593. And you seal me, Lord, in a

  1594. place that I can't touch, in a

  1595. place I can't mess up, in

  1596. heaven itself.

1597. And then the fifth, last

1598. heading I've got here is, see

  1599. how Christ disciples his

  1600. church.

1601. We saw how he disciplines

  1602. through covenant curses and

1603. threats, but he disciples by

  1604. also extending covenantal

  1605. blessings.

  1606. Blessings promised for

  1607. obedience.

  1608. Look at verse 7.

1609. To the one who conquers.

1610. He's not talking about an

  1611. entire congregation.

  1612. He's talking about an

  1613. individual now.

1614. To the one who conquers.

1615. I will grant to eat of the

1616. tree of life, which is in the

  1617. paradise of God.

1618. The Lord Jesus stands in

1619. heaven and he, he prosecutes

1620. his covenant of grace to his

  1621. church.

1622. Respond to my love and I will

  1623. bless you.

1624. I am the second Adam, he says.

1625. But remember with the original

1626. Adam in the garden of Eden, he

1627. was under a covenant of works.

1628. Adam had to obey Christ, obey

  1629. God personally, perpetually and

  1630. perfectly in every way.

1631. And Adam fell short of the glory

  1632. of God.

1633. And all who are under Adam as the

1634. first federal head are under the

1635. curse of death because of sin.

1636. Adam's sin as well as our own sin

  1637. added on to that.

1638. And Jesus says, I am offering to

1639. you the blessing of heaven as the

  1640. great and final Adam.

1641. Why can Christ offer this?

1642. That we get to eat from that

1643. tree of life that Adam could

  1644. never touch?

1645. It's because Christ already has

  1646. it.

1647. He fulfilled that demand of the

  1648. law.

1649. He himself put himself under the

  1650. law.

1651. He accomplished the covenant of

1652. works that Adam fell short of.

1653. And Christ holds, he holds that

1654. fruit of the tree of life.

1655. So when he says that to the one

1656. who conquers, I will give this,

1657. it's because he already has it.

  1658. It's in his hands.

1659. There's nothing that can take that

  1660. out of Christ's hands.

1661. He merited it, not because he

1662. lacked anything, but because we

  1663. lack everything.

1664. And the Father has placed that in

  1665. his hands.

1666. And it's to the one who conquers.

1667. To the one who conquers an apathy

  1668. toward others.

1669. To the one who conquers being

1670. passive in your walk with the

  1671. Lord.

1672. You conquer by remembering that

1673. love of God for you, by

1674. gospeling yourself back through that

  1675. once again.

1676. Do you see how Christ disciples his

  1677. church?

  1678. He's the good shepherd.

1679. His rod and his staff, they comfort

  1680. us.

1681. His rod of correction puts us back on

1682. the path when we stray.

1683. And his staff, it guides us in the

  1684. way of life everlasting.

1685. Christ's true church, every believer,

1686. has love only because God first

  1687. loved you.

1688. And he calls us to tend that love,

1689. cultivate it, take care of it.

1690. On this earth, it will always feel

1691. like a battle to cultivate this love

  1692. that comes from God.

1693. And that's because we have remaining

  1694. sin in our flesh.

1695. Our hearts are prone to wonder.

1696. So how long does Christ need to

  1697. disciple his church?

1698. As long as your heart is prone to

  1699. wonder in mine.

1700. How long does Christ keep discipling

  1701. us, his church?

1702. He keeps discipling us as long as he

  1703. loves us.

1704. And his love is unending for his

  1705. church.

1706. How long does Christ disciple his

  1707. church?

1708. As long as we are still on this

1709. fallen earth and he is in heaven.

1710. And there will be a day when he

1711. comes and his kingdom of heaven is

  1712. fully on earth.

1713. That day will be prepared for

  1714. eternity with him.

  1715. But in the meantime,

  1716. remember, beloved congregation of

1717. our Lord Jesus Christ, how close he

1718. is to you, his church.

1719. How he speaks to you.

  1720. He holds you.

  1721. He walks among us.

1722. Stay close to him one step at a

  1723. time.

1724. I love the picture of the Lord

1725. Jesus of his yoke, his light.

  1726. You're yoked to Christ.

1727. But he does all the work.

  1728. He's pulling and plowing and you're

1729. walking in step with him.

1730. And as you walk with him, he teaches

  1731. you.

1732. And what he loves, you love.

1733. What he hates, you hate more and more

  1734. and more.

1735. What you lack, you see right here,

1736. yoked to Christ, I have it all.

  1737. In John 13, 34 through 35, Jesus said,

1738. just as I have loved you, you are to love

  1739. one another.

1740. And by this, all people will know that

1741. you, dear church, are my disciples.

1742. If you have love for one another,

1743. your little lamp will be burning bright

1744. and the weight of the Holy of Holies

  1745. will be visible.

  1746. Don't hide that light.

1747. Let it shine brightly that the world

1748. can see you are ones who I've saved

1749. and I put my love in you and you point

1750. the way to the only one who can give

1751. such love to sinners that have been saved.

  1752. Never forget, beloved church,

1753. what Christ cares most about.

1754. And it's that we love him,

1755. that we love one another.

1756. Christ's heart never wonders from his church.

1757. His love never runs out.

1758. He loved you until the end of his death

1759. on the cross and he loves you

  1760. until the very end

  1761. and into all eternity.

1762. Praise the Lord of love.

1763. We're going to sing this in a moment.

1764. Crown him the Lord of love.

  1765. Behold his hands inside,

1766. rich wounds yet visible above,

  1767. in beauty glorified.

  1768. All hail, Redeemer, hail,

1769. for thou hast died for me.

1770. Thy praise and glory shall not fail

  1771. throughout eternity.

  1772. We welcome the discipline

  1773. of our loving Christ.

1774. He is so near to his church

1775. and he is so worthy of our love.

1776. And we do have the promise

  1777. as a congregation,

  1778. by God's help,

1779. that as long as his love remains in us,

1780. the lamp of this congregation

  1781. will never go out

1782. because he is the one

  1783. who holds his church.

1784. And he who rescued us

  1785. from our sin

  1786. because he is love,

1787. he is the same one

  1788. who disciples us

  1789. because he is love.

1790. Praise this God we have.

1791. Would you pray with me?

1792. Lord, our love for you

  1793. and for yours,

1794. it is so prone to wonder.

1795. But Father, we put our eyes

  1796. back on Christ.

1797. We see him ministering to us

1798. and we see how you rescued us

  1799. from sin and danger,

  1800. how we are purchased

  1801. by your blood.

  1802. And we ask, Lord,

  1803. that by your help

1804. we will walk on earth

  1805. as a stranger

  1806. because we are sons

  1807. and heirs of God

  1808. in heaven.

  1809. Amen.

  1810. Take some time

1811. to reflect on the gospel

  1812. that you have heard.

1813. Let the Lord stir back up

  1814. your love for him.
