  1. John chapter 15, starting at verse 12.

    John 15 chapter mention

  2. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

  3. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

  4. You are my friends if you do what I command you.

  5. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing.

  6. But I have called you friends.

  7. For all that I have heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

  8. You did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit,

  9. and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

  10. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

  11. If the world hates you, know that it hated me before it hated you.

  12. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own.

  13. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

  14. Remember the word that I said to you, a servant is not greater than his master.

  15. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.

  16. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

  17. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.

  18. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.

  19. Whoever hates me hates my Father also.

  20. If I had not done, I'm sorry, yeah, if I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin.

  21. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.

  22. But the word that is written in the law must be fulfilled.

  23. They hated me without a cause.

  24. But when the helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.

  25. And you also will bear witness about me because you have been with me from the beginning.

  26. This is the word of the Lord.

  27. Thanks be to God indeed.

  28. You may be seated.

  29. Would you pray with me?

  30. Father, I pray that your word will go forth with power.

  31. That the word of Jesus Christ will be clear.

  32. I pray, Lord, that you will open the eyes of our heart to behold Christ as he speaks to his disciples.

  33. I pray that you will strip us of our good works.

  34. Strip us of our false assurance.

  35. I pray that you will drive us to depend on Christ, the true vine.

  36. We pray, Lord, that for those who you call your friends, those for whom you died,

  37. that you will give a true assurance, a deeper hope, a more pure joy.

  38. That you'll do all of this for your glory, for our good, and for Christ's sake we ask.

  39. Amen.

  40. Beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  41. How do you know that God chose you?

  42. How do you know that God chose you?

  43. A Victorian lady in London once asked Charles Spurgeon, the preacher there,

  44. if it's possible to reconcile God's sovereignty with man's responsibility.

  45. You've been in those debates.

  46. God's sovereignty or man's responsibility.

  47. Maybe you know the answer.

  48. Spurgeon said, I wouldn't try.

  49. Why not?

  50. You don't reconcile friends.

  51. The Bible in some places puts a lot of emphasis on your responsibility and mine.

  52. Choose this day whom you will serve.

  53. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord, said Joshua.

  54. Jesus commanded, repent and believe.

  55. There's a responsibility.

  56. You must respond to the gospel when you hear it.

  57. That's on you to respond.

  58. In other words, when you don't respond with faith and repentance, believing in Christ,

  59. you are standing in defiance of King Jesus.

  60. You are rebelling against Him.

  61. He says, obey my command.

  62. Jesus says, bear fruit.

  63. His commands are very clear.

  64. But look at verse 16 that we just read.

  65. Jesus says, you did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit that abides.

  66. Look at what he says in verse 19.

  67. You are not of the world.

  68. Why?

  69. Because I chose you out of this world.

  70. The Bible teaches that you will only repent if you have been chosen out of this world.

  71. Jesus says, you must be born again in order to believe.

  72. Babies don't choose to be born.

  73. That's something that the Spirit does.

  74. And Jesus says in this same chapter, apart from me, you can bear no fruit.

  75. The emphasis on these verses is on God's sovereignty.

  76. So the big question for you and for me, how do I know?

  77. How can I know that God chose me?

  78. I believe in these passages here, this passage, these verses,

  79. our Lord Jesus gives us five answers to that question and a caution.

  80. So I'm going to try to bring to you five points of reflection.

  81. You can know that God chose you.

  82. Five points of reflection and also one caution.

  83. Number one, you can know that God chose you if he causes you to love his friends.

  84. You can know that God chose you, number one, if he causes you to love his friends.

  85. Do you?

  86. Do you?

  87. Look at verse 12.

  88. Jesus says, this is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

  89. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

  90. In verse 14, he says, you are my friends if you do what I command you to do.

  91. Jesus is saying this,

  92. My people, those who belong to me, that I say are my friends, they will obey me.

  93. My people will do what Israel, national Israel, could never do.

  94. That's why the New Testament calls Christians the true Israel.

  95. And that is to show divine love to one another.

  96. My people, Jesus says, will keep God's moral law.

  97. They will respond in obedience to King Jesus.

  98. So the big question is, who are his friends?

  99. Who are those that Jesus laid down his life for?

  100. He says, there's no greater love than to lay down your life for your friends.

  101. We need to make sense of what Jesus preaches here with all of Scripture.

  102. Is all of the world a friend of Christ?

  103. The obvious answer is no.

  104. But think about what this means.

  105. In Psalm 2, the world, left on its own, hates God.

  106. The world, left on its own, mocks King Jesus.

  107. The world, on its own, is at enmity with God.

  108. Ecclesiastes 9.3 says,

  109. Your heart, O child of man, every single one,

  110. is full of evil and madness.

  111. So, who is it that's a friend of God?

  112. If that's how the whole world is.

  113. Well, Romans 5.10 answers that question.

  114. While we, we all, were enemies with God,

  115. He reconciled us by the death of His Son.

  116. So, who are the true friends of God?

  117. It's those who were reconciled to the Father by the death of the Son.

  118. It's those for whom Christ died.

  119. There is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friends.

  120. You can know that God chose you.

  121. If He causes you to have that love for His friends.

  122. What kind of love?

  123. Self-sacrificing love.

  124. He laid down His life for His friends.

  125. Do you love Christians?

  126. Do you love those for whom Jesus Christ, the Son, shed His precious blood?

  127. Think about all that is said in that phrase that Jesus,

  128. the God-man, the second person of the Trinity,

  129. He laid it all down.

  130. What all did Christ lay down for you who He calls His friends?

  131. John Gill helped me see this.

  132. Christ came down from heaven.

  133. He laid aside His glory and royal majesty.

  134. He laid down His life.

  135. Not only His gold and silver and the riches of heaven,

  136. not only did He forsake all the riches that He could claim on the world He created,

  137. they were all His already.

  138. But He laid all of that down.

  139. And what's more, He laid down His very life.

  140. There is nothing dearer to a man than Himself.

  141. His all.

  142. And that's what Christ laid down for His friends.

  143. How do you know if you are Christ's friends?

  144. How do you know if Christ laid down His life for you?

  145. He says,

  146. those that I purchase with my blood,

  147. they will have my love one for another.

  148. It's a promise.

  149. You don't earn Christ's love by your obedience.

  150. It's the opposite.

  151. It's Christ's obedience to His Father

  152. that earns a love that you're incapable of generating.

  153. He earned this love for you

  154. and puts it inside of you and inside of me.

  155. King Jesus calls you to love His bride,

  156. His church,

  157. the family of God.

  158. King Jesus calls you to have that kind of self-sacrificing love

  159. for the family in the row next to you,

  160. in front or behind you.

  161. that you would lay down your life one for another.

  162. God did not choose you because you were fruitful.

  163. God makes you fruitful

  164. because He chose you.

  165. You can know that God chose you

  166. if He causes you

  167. more and more and more and more

  168. to love His friends.

  169. You can also know that God chose you,

  170. number two,

  171. if He bears fruit in your life.

  172. You can know that God did in fact choose you

  173. if He bears His fruit in your life.

  174. Does He?

  175. Look at verse 15.

  176. No longer do I call you servants,

  177. for the servant does not know

  178. what his master is doing.

  179. But I have called you friends,

  180. for all that I have heard from my Father

  181. I have made known to you.

  182. You did not choose me,

  183. but I chose you

  184. and appointed you

  185. that you should go

  186. and bear fruit

  187. and that your fruit should abide

  188. so that whatever you ask the Father

  189. in my name,

  190. He may give it to you.

  191. These things I command you

  192. so that you will love one another.

  193. The ironic thing is that

  194. Jesus is promising something to the disciples

  195. that they don't have yet.

  196. He says,

  197. you're my friends because you have it all.

  198. I've revealed the gospel to you,

  199. the plan of the Father.

  200. You have it all.

  201. And they're sitting there

  202. not understanding this great teaching.

  203. But remember,

  204. He has told them

  205. that the Spirit will come back

  206. and He'll remind you of these things.

  207. Can you just picture the joy

  208. and the humility of old man John,

  209. the old apostle now,

  210. looking back and the Spirit reminding him

  211. word for word

  212. what Christ promised.

  213. He's saying,

  214. I did not understand this.

  215. Yet He's saying,

  216. I'm His friend.

  217. But a servant is the one

  218. who doesn't understand.

  219. I was a servant,

  220. but He's calling me a friend.

  221. The glorious truth here is this.

  222. The best morality in the world

  223. will not prove a man to be a Christian.

  224. In the words of Charles Spurgeon,

  225. but if a man has no Christian love,

  226. it proves that he is not a child of God.

  227. See, no amount of good works

  228. can prove to yourself

  229. you're a Christian

  230. or save you that way.

  231. However, the caution is there.

  232. If there is no love

  233. that God has to put in your heart,

  234. we do have proof.

  235. You are not engrafted into the true vine.

  236. But think about the encouragement.

  237. He's speaking as immediate audiences

  238. from the Lord Jesus Christ

  239. to the 12 disciples

  240. or the 11 that remain

  241. and He'll pull Paul into this.

  242. And to the disciples,

  243. He's giving these promises.

  244. And through the disciples to the church

  245. and through the church

  246. over the centuries to us.

  247. And that's why the disciples

  248. are an encouragement to us

  249. because the disciples

  250. did not bear fruit

  251. of selfless love

  252. toward one another.

  253. Remember,

  254. who was it that washed their feet?

  255. They couldn't even wash each other's feet

  256. just a few hours prior.

  257. Jesus Christ Himself

  258. had to show that basic love

  259. toward them.

  260. The disciples did not know

  261. what their Master was doing.

  262. They were servants.

  263. But by grace,

  264. Jesus says,

  265. you are my friends

  266. and you've been appointed

  267. to bear good fruit.

  268. It would happen eventually

  269. even if it wasn't evident yet.

  270. But that's who they already are.

  271. He declared it of them.

  272. The disciples did not choose

  273. to follow Jesus Christ.

  274. But He says,

  275. by grace,

  276. I'm the one who called you.

  277. I'm the one who chose you.

  278. And I am the one

  279. who am revealing to you

  280. all that the Father

  281. has shown to me.

  282. and that the Spirit will remind

  283. and inspire in the New Testament.

  284. The disciples did not obey Christ

  285. even to pray with Him.

  286. Later that night,

  287. they all fell asleep.

  288. Do you remember that?

  289. They did not abide in Him.

  290. The disciples,

  291. they forsook Christ.

  292. They ran away from Him.

  293. They abandoned Jesus

  294. to save their own lives.

  295. So they thought.

  296. God did not choose the disciples

  297. because they were fruitful.

  298. But because He chose them,

  299. look how fruitful He made

  300. His true disciples

  301. by the power of the Spirit.

  302. That same principle is true

  303. for you and me.

  304. What an encouragement.

  305. God did not choose you

  306. because you were fruitful.

  307. He chose you because

  308. He will make you fruitful.

  309. Your obedience does not make you

  310. friends with Christ,

  311. but obedience does characterize

  312. all of Christ's true friends.

  313. Jesus says,

  314. I choose you.

  315. You are my friend.

  316. Augustine, profound insight.

  317. What is a friend?

  318. A single soul dwelling in two bodies.

  319. Isn't that a beautiful way

  320. to describe our union to Christ?

  321. A single soul.

  322. You are united spiritually with Christ.

  323. You're in this body on earth,

  324. but your soul is united to Him.

  325. You are friends with God

  326. through Jesus Christ.

  327. You can know that God chose you

  328. if He bears fruit

  329. in your life.

  330. You can also know that God chose you,

  331. number three,

  332. if you are not of this world.

  333. You can know that God chose you

  334. if you don't belong to this world.

  335. Do you?

  336. Are you of this world still?

  337. Look at what He says in verse 18.

  338. If the world hates you,

  339. know that it has hated me

  340. before it hated you.

  341. If you were of the world,

  342. the world would love you as its own.

  343. But because you are not of the world,

  344. but I chose you out of the world,

  345. therefore,

  346. the world hates you.

  347. Remember the word that I said to you,

  348. a servant is not greater than his master.

  349. If they persecuted me,

  350. they will also persecute you.

  351. If they kept my word,

  352. they will also keep yours.

  353. When the Lord Jesus would minister

  354. in a town or village,

  355. there were many who would come and listen,

  356. but we're also told that many turned their backs

  357. and walked away,

  358. didn't believe,

  359. but some believed.

  360. Even after He rose from the dead,

  361. we're told that same thing.

  362. Many came and they bore witness

  363. that Christ is alive.

  364. Over 500 witnesses.

  365. But yet many still did not believe.

  366. They abandoned Him.

  367. Jesus says,

  368. Disciples,

  369. you abandon me,

  370. you will abandon me

  371. in the hours to come.

  372. But when my spirit is on you,

  373. I'm going to inspire the word of God,

  374. the New Testament.

  375. And the church for thousands of years

  376. will hold on to these words.

  377. And I will make them hear my word

  378. through what simple fishermen like you

  379. are going to put down in writing.

  380. I will breathe out the rest of God's revelation

  381. through men like you.

  382. What a glorious promise.

  383. Jesus says,

  384. This is true for you, disciples,

  385. because you are my servants.

  386. He's making an argument

  387. from the greater to the lesser.

  388. Christ is greater.

  389. The disciples and you and I,

  390. we are lesser.

  391. Whatever is true of the one who is greater,

  392. by consequence,

  393. becomes true of us.

  394. He is the master.

  395. We are the servants.

  396. And He says,

  397. If they persecute the master,

  398. what would you expect as the servants?

  399. Of course they're going to come after you.

  400. And this came true,

  401. we read in Acts 1-3.

  402. Jesus presented Himself alive to them

  403. after His suffering

  404. by many proofs.

  405. And He appeared to them for 40 days

  406. speaking to them about the kingdom of God.

  407. And then these disciples,

  408. including Paul,

  409. all of the apostles,

  410. went forth with this glorious revelation

  411. and the power of the Holy Spirit.

  412. And what did they do?

  413. In Acts 14,

  414. they heralded boldly

  415. for Jesus Christ.

  416. And they bore witness

  417. of the word of His grace.

  418. All that Christ was promising them now,

  419. it comes out to play

  420. in the history of the church

  421. in the book of Acts.

  422. They would die as martyrs,

  423. but they knew

  424. the world hates them

  425. and hates the message of Christ

  426. because it first hated God Himself.

  427. Well, how is this true for you and me?

  428. You are not of this world,

  429. according to verse 18,

  430. if you are hated

  431. by the world for Christ's sake

  432. because He chose you

  433. out of the world.

  434. We experience the hatred of the world

  435. in mild ways.

  436. We need to be bracing ourselves

  437. and training ourselves

  438. and being disciplined

  439. to be hated even more.

  440. You are not of this world,

  441. according to verse 19,

  442. if you hear the voice of Christ,

  443. your Good Shepherd,

  444. calling you.

  445. Do you hear Him?

  446. Or do you hear the clamor

  447. and the loud voices of the world

  448. over the voice of your Good Shepherd?

  449. You are not of the world,

  450. according to verse 19,

  451. if you are freed

  452. from the ruler of this world.

  453. And Christ is truly your master now.

  454. Satan can no longer claim

  455. any dominion over you.

  456. You are set free

  457. and you belong to Christ.

  458. You have a good master.

  459. You are not of this world,

  460. according to verse 20,

  461. if you keep the words of Christ

  462. and His word given to you

  463. by the apostles.

  464. You keep the word of God.

  465. You read the New Testament

  466. and His Spirit presses it to you

  467. as truth

  468. and He feeds your soul.

  469. We have a danger.

  470. Though we belong to Christ,

  471. our bodies are battling against sin.

  472. Thomas Watson said,

  473. all the danger

  474. is when the world

  475. finds some way

  476. into your heart.

  477. He gives this awesome metaphor.

  478. He says,

  479. the water

  480. is useful for sailing

  481. the ship.

  482. So the water would be like

  483. the world

  484. and the ship is your life.

  485. All the danger is

  486. when the water

  487. gets into the ship.

  488. And so the fear

  489. is when the world

  490. gets into the heart.

  491. Don't shipwreck your faith.

  492. Don't be entangled

  493. in this world.

  494. You do not belong

  495. to this world.

  496. Christ chose you

  497. out of the world.

  498. And if the world hates you,

  499. take that as an encouragement

  500. that God chose you

  501. out of this world.

  502. God did not choose you

  503. because you were fruitful.

  504. God makes you fruitful

  505. because He chose you.

  506. You can know

  507. that God chose you

  508. if you are not

  509. of this world.

  510. Here comes the caution.

  511. If you don't believe

  512. in Jesus Christ,

  513. then you are perishing

  514. with this world.

  515. If you don't believe

  516. in Jesus Christ

  517. as your personal

  518. Lord and Savior,

  519. you remain in your sin.

  520. You remain under

  521. the wrath of God.

  522. You remain in bondage

  523. to this world

  524. that is perishing.

  525. Do you believe?

  526. Do you truly believe?

  527. Look at what Jesus says

  528. starting in verse 21.

  529. All these things they do,

  530. to you,

  531. on account of my name

  532. because they do not know

  533. Him who sent me.

  534. If I had not come

  535. and spoken to them,

  536. they would not have been

  537. guilty of sin.

  538. But now they have no excuse

  539. for their sin.

  540. Whoever hates me

  541. hates my Father also.

  542. If I had not done

  543. among them

  544. the works that

  545. no one else did,

  546. they would not be guilty

  547. of sin.

  548. But now they have seen

  549. and hated

  550. both me and my Father.

  551. The word that is written

  552. in their law

  553. must be fulfilled.

  554. They hated me

  555. without a cause.

  556. If you mock

  557. those Christ

  558. calls His friends,

  559. He says,

  560. you persecute Christ Himself

  561. in verse 21.

  562. And this reveals

  563. in your heart

  564. you hate God.

  565. If you make excuses

  566. to deny His word,

  567. to protect

  568. your precious sin,

  569. then you don't know God.

  570. That's what He says

  571. in verse 22.

  572. If you will dismiss

  573. all of Christ's works

  574. that He revealed

  575. in Scripture,

  576. and you'll say

  577. it's made up,

  578. it's just something

  579. the men wrote down.

  580. In verse 24,

  581. He says,

  582. you don't know

  583. the true salvation

  584. that all of those signs

  585. are pointing to.

  586. If you deny Christ,

  587. then you hate Him.

  588. you rebel

  589. against King Jesus,

  590. although He has done

  591. nothing

  592. to deserve that.

  593. Tell me,

  594. are not many of you

  595. despairing

  596. at what has been said?

  597. That's what

  598. George Whitefield

  599. asked

  600. a group

  601. after preaching

  602. the gospel.

  603. That despair,

  604. that caution,

  605. that's a blessing

  606. if it drives you

  607. to Christ.

  608. He said,

  609. oh,

  610. that the world

  611. was filled

  612. with this despair.

  613. Jesus came down

  614. to save us,

  615. not only from

  616. the guilt of sin,

  617. but also

  618. from the power

  619. of sin.

  620. You do not belong

  621. to the world.

  622. If you are

  623. caught up

  624. in the pattern

  625. of this world,

  626. and you are

  627. secretly loving sin

  628. more than you

  629. love your Savior,

  630. you need to

  631. be warned.

  632. This world

  633. is perishing.

  634. Do you belong

  635. to this perishing

  636. world,

  637. or do you belong

  638. to Christ?

  639. If you belong

  640. to Christ,

  641. He chose you

  642. out of this world.

  643. So the big question

  644. today is this,

  645. how do you know

  646. that God chose you

  647. out of the world?

  648. Do you want to know

  649. that?

  650. Do you want to know

  651. that God has chosen

  652. me?

  653. Then there's one thing

  654. He calls you to do.

  655. Repent.

  656. Every person

  657. who believes

  658. and repents

  659. is chosen by God.

  660. That means the Holy

  661. Spirit is causing you

  662. to give up your pride,

  663. to turn to Him,

  664. to humble yourself,

  665. to receive His

  666. free salvation.

  667. As we walk

  668. through His

  669. Scripture,

  670. as we read

  671. these words,

  672. we're hearing

  673. the words of

  674. Jesus Christ Himself.

  675. Do you see Him?

  676. If you're opening

  677. your eyes,

  678. it's the Spirit

  679. causing you

  680. to behold Jesus.

  681. You see God

  682. when you see Jesus.

  683. He lives for you

  684. off of the pages

  685. of the Bible,

  686. before your eyes.

  687. So to walk

  688. away from Him,

  689. to reject Him,

  690. is to hate Him,

  691. is to despise Him.

  692. And it makes us

  693. no better than those

  694. who would put Him

  695. on a cross

  696. in a few hours.

  697. Now the comfort

  698. is many of us

  699. have heard the Gospel

  700. and the Spirit

  701. has shown us the Lord,

  702. but we're still

  703. tangled up

  704. with the world.

  705. And the church

  706. was born out of those

  707. who cried,

  708. crucify Him.

  709. And the disciples

  710. who fled Him

  711. to spare their life,

  712. He said,

  713. I laid down

  714. my life for you

  715. and I call you friends

  716. when you abandoned me.

  717. So every time

  718. we have forsaken Christ,

  719. it drives us back

  720. just like the disciples

  721. to rely on Him,

  722. not ourselves.

  723. And to receive

  724. His free salvation,

  725. to rest in Him,

  726. to abide in Him,

  727. to truly see Him,

  728. our Good Shepherd,

  729. and to follow Him

  730. more and more each day.

  731. Be comforted

  732. by this promise.

  733. You did not

  734. choose God.

  735. God has chosen you.

  736. While you're running away,

  737. He calls to you,

  738. come to me.

  739. Come to me

  740. and find rest

  741. for your soul.

  742. You're not going to find it

  743. anywhere else.

  744. And God did not choose you

  745. because you were

  746. being fruitful already,

  747. but because He has chosen you,

  748. He promises

  749. He will bear His fruit

  750. in your life

  751. so that He gets

  752. all the glory.

  753. But if you don't believe

  754. in Jesus Christ,

  755. then you are perishing

  756. with this world.

  757. There is a world

  758. that is yet to come.

  759. Two more points of reflection.

  760. You can know

  761. that God chose you

  762. if His Spirit

  763. strengthens your faith

  764. in Christ.

  765. You can know

  766. that God chose you

  767. if His Holy Spirit

  768. is strengthening

  769. your faith in Him.

  770. Look at verse 26.

  771. Jesus says,

  772. when the Helper comes,

  773. see, you need the Helper.

  774. You need the God Himself,

  775. the Holy Spirit,

  776. to apply all of this

  777. to make it so

  778. in your life.

  779. When the Helper comes,

  780. whom I will send to you

  781. from My Father,

  782. the Spirit of truth

  783. who proceeds

  784. from the Father,

  785. He will bear witness

  786. about Me.

  787. So if you do believe,

  788. if you have

  789. the gift of faith

  790. from God,

  791. it's because the Spirit

  792. is bearing witness

  793. to you.

  794. It is God,

  795. the Holy Spirit,

  796. bearing witness,

  797. causing you

  798. to believe

  799. by faith.

  800. So He says,

  801. when the Helper comes,

  802. beginning of verse 26,

  803. He will bear witness

  804. about Me.

  805. End of verse 26.

  806. And what He says

  807. in the middle

  808. gives us a wonderful

  809. doctrine of the Holy Spirit.

  810. He says two things

  811. about this sending

  812. or proceeding

  813. of the Spirit.

  814. First He says,

  815. the Spirit whom

  816. I will send.

  817. Do you see that

  818. in verse 26?

  819. The Spirit whom

  820. I will send,

  821. the Spirit of truth,

  822. who proceeds

  823. from the Father.

  824. So,

  825. a couple of points

  826. that we need to

  827. pay attention

  828. and hold on to here.

  829. The Holy Spirit,

  830. Jesus Christ Himself

  831. is revealing,

  832. the Holy Spirit

  833. proceeds

  834. in the active,

  835. continuous tense.

  836. This is a doctrine

  837. called eternal generation

  838. or eternal procession.

  839. Like,

  840. the Holy Spirit

  841. is always proceeding

  842. from God the Father.

  843. The Holy Spirit

  844. did not come into being

  845. or was not a created being.

  846. The Holy Spirit

  847. has eternally

  848. been proceeding

  849. in the present tense

  850. continuously

  851. from the Father.

  852. But yet,

  853. there's a special

  854. pouring out

  855. of the Spirit

  856. that was reserved

  857. for the fullness of time

  858. when the Son

  859. would accomplish His work.

  860. And then,

  861. He,

  862. as He ascends,

  863. He says,

  864. it's good for you.

  865. It's good for you

  866. that I go

  867. because then I will send

  868. the Spirit

  869. to apply it,

  870. who?

  871. To my friends.

  872. My friends will get

  873. the helper,

  874. the same helper

  875. that I got.

  876. The Holy Spirit

  877. will bear witness

  878. to the friends of Christ,

  879. to the truth

  880. that Jesus Christ

  881. is not a seed

  882. of Adam's

  883. cursed line,

  884. but Jesus Christ

  885. was born

  886. to be the promised

  887. seed of woman.

  888. In Luke 1,

    Luke 1:35

  889. verse 35,

  890. we're told that

  891. it was the power

  892. of the Most High

  893. that overshadowed Mary.

  894. Remember,

  895. the helper,

  896. that word is

  897. paraclete,

  898. advocate,

  899. witness,

  900. comforter.

  901. And a paraclete

  902. is one who knew

  903. the character

  904. of the person

  905. that they're bearing

  906. witness about.

  907. The Holy Spirit

  908. knew Jesus

  909. from the very beginning.

  910. The moment

  911. of conception,

  912. and before that

  913. an eternity past

  914. as being the one God.

  915. The Holy Spirit

  916. bears witness

  917. to the truth

  918. of who Jesus is.

  919. The Holy Spirit

  920. also bore witness

  921. to the truth

  922. that Jesus

  923. withstood

  924. every temptation

  925. and He remained

  926. sinless.

  927. He showed

  928. the perfect love

  929. of heaven

  930. on earth

  931. on behalf

  932. of fallen mankind.

  933. We're told

  934. in Luke 4,

  935. 11,

  936. it was the Holy Spirit

  937. that drove Jesus

  938. into the wilderness

  939. to be tempted.

  940. It was the Holy Spirit

  941. that brought Jesus back

  942. and by the power

  943. of the Holy Spirit,

  944. Jesus Christ

  945. ministered.

  946. The Holy Spirit

  947. bears witness

  948. to the truth

  949. that Jesus

  950. fulfilled the mission

  951. that the Father

  952. gave Him

  953. to accomplish.

  954. We read this

  955. in Luke 4,

  956. 18.

  957. Jesus said,

  958. The Spirit

  959. of the Lord

  960. is upon me.

  961. He has anointed me

  962. to proclaim

  963. good news

  964. to the poor.

  965. He has sent me

  966. to proclaim

  967. liberty to the captives

  968. and recovery of sight

  969. to the blind,

  970. to set at liberty

  971. those who are oppressed.

  972. So when Jesus refers

  973. to the Holy Spirit

  974. as the helper,

  975. He knows the help

  976. of the Holy Spirit

  977. so intimately.

  978. This is the Spirit

  979. that helped Jesus Christ Himself

  980. that He is giving

  981. as a gift

  982. to His friends.

  983. That same Holy Spirit

  984. is your helper.

  985. A Puritan named

  986. Jeremy Taylor

  987. said,

  988. It is impossible

  989. for a soul

  990. to despair

  991. who remembers

  992. that your helper

  993. is the omnipotent God.

  994. You can know

  995. that God chose you

  996. if His Spirit

  997. is strengthening

  998. your faith

  999. in Christ.

1000. God did not choose you

  1001. because you were fruitful,

  1002. but God chose you

  1003. and put His Spirit

  1004. in you

  1005. to bear

  1006. the fruit of Christ.

  1007. in your life

  1008. to help you

  1009. walk and follow Him.

  1010. Finally,

  1011. you can know

  1012. that God chose you

  1013. if you bear witness

  1014. of who Christ is

  1015. to you.

  1016. You can know

  1017. that God chose you

  1018. if you are one

  1019. who bears witness

  1020. of who Christ is

  1021. to you.

  1022. Do you?

  1023. Do you bear witness

  1024. of Christ?

  1025. Jesus promises

  1026. that His friends

  1027. will do this.

  1028. In verse 27,

1029. You also will bear witness

  1030. because you have been

  1031. with me

  1032. from the beginning.

  1033. The disciples

  1034. would receive

  1035. the anointing

  1036. of the Holy Spirit

1037. and they would go out

  1038. into the whole world

  1039. declaring the gospel,

  1040. the good news

  1041. that God

  1042. came to save sinners

  1043. like me

  1044. and like you.

1045. And it's every true believer

  1046. following Christ

  1047. that has the delight,

1048. the joy of bearing witness

  1049. to their Savior,

1050. the one that you know.

  1051. He is the one

  1052. I heard His voice

1053. and He calls to you too.

  1054. Isn't this amazing?

  1055. God did not need

  1056. to use disciples.

  1057. He does not need

  1058. to use people

  1059. like you and me

  1060. in this mission

  1061. to save sinners.

  1062. His Holy Spirit

  1063. is the powerful

  1064. working agent.

  1065. But yet He says,

  1066. you will bear witness.

1067. That's one of the purposes

1068. for which I have chosen you.

  1069. I am including you

  1070. in this mission.

  1071. Why?

  1072. Because you're my friends.

  1073. And because it gives

  1074. the Lord Jesus

  1075. great joy

  1076. and all of heaven

  1077. celebrates

  1078. when the Spirit

  1079. applies the gospel

  1080. and brings another son

  1081. or daughter

  1082. into the kingdom.

  1083. He wants His joy

  1084. to be your own.

  1085. He includes us

  1086. in His mission

  1087. to share His joy

  1088. with us.

  1089. Charles Spurgeon said,

1090. to be a soul winner

  1091. is the happiest thing

  1092. in the world.

  1093. Every time God brings

  1094. a soul

  1095. to believe in Christ,

  1096. He brings a part

  1097. of heaven

  1098. to earth.

1099. Do you know the joy

  1100. of being a witness

  1101. to Jesus Christ?

  1102. We're told that

  1103. God rejoices

  1104. when He opens

1105. the eyes of the blind

  1106. to see Him.

  1107. In Luke 10, 21,

  1108. we're told Jesus Christ

1109. rejoiced in the Holy Spirit.

1110. He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit

  1111. filling Him.

  1112. And He says,

  1113. I thank You, Father.

  1114. There it is.

  1115. Father, Holy Spirit, Son,

  1116. the triune God

  1117. rejoicing together.

1118. And what is He so pleased

  1119. and joyful about?

  1120. I praise You, Father,

  1121. that You have revealed

  1122. to these little children

  1123. the gospel.

1124. For such was Your gracious will.

1125. It's been said that friendship

1126. cuts your sorrows in half

1127. and it doubles your joys.

  1128. Jesus says,

  1129. You are my friends.

1130. Your sorrows you bring to me.

1131. I bear your sorrows with you.

1132. My joy I give to you.

  1133. My joy is doubled

  1134. by your friendship.

  1135. God lacks nothing,

  1136. but He doubles.

1137. He doubles it in us.

  1138. He expounds and magnifies

  1139. His joyful character

  1140. by involving us

  1141. in His mission.

1142. If that saying is true

  1143. of people,

1144. how much more is it true

  1145. of our Lord Jesus?

  1146. Jesus Christ

1147. doesn't cut your sorrows in half.

  1148. He says,

1149. Give me all of your sorrows.

1150. He bears all of our sorrows

  1151. on our behalf.

  1152. And we're told that

  1153. in Jesus Christ

  1154. is fullness of joy.

1155. not just a double joy

  1156. from a human friendship.

  1157. It's fullness of joy

  1158. in Christ alone.

1159. You can know that God chose you

  1160. if you bear witness

1161. of who Jesus Christ is to you.

1162. You get to share in His joy

1163. of seeing His name go forth.

1164. The hymn gets it so right.

  1165. It says,

  1166. Jesus,

1167. what a friend for sinners.

  1168. Jesus,

  1169. lover of my soul.

  1170. Friends may fail me,

  1171. foes assail me.

  1172. He, my Savior,

  1173. makes me whole.

  1174. Hallelujah,

  1175. what a Savior.

  1176. Hallelujah,

  1177. what a friend.

  1178. Saving,

  1179. helping,

  1180. keeping,

  1181. loving.

  1182. He is with me

  1183. to the end.

  1184. Beloved congregation

1185. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  1186. you can know

  1187. more assurance.

  1188. You can know

  1189. more of this love.

  1190. You can have

1191. more of this divine joy.

  1192. The reason is

  1193. because you did not

  1194. choose God.

  1195. Jesus says,

  1196. I chose you.

  1197. What comfort we have

  1198. in this.

1199. God did not choose you

  1200. because you were faithful

  1201. or fruitful.

  1202. but because

  1203. he has put

  1204. this gift of faith

  1205. and opened your eyes,

  1206. he promises

  1207. he will

  1208. make you

  1209. fruitful

  1210. so that he gets

  1211. all of the glory

  1212. in your life

  1213. and in mine.

  1214. Let's pray

  1215. from 2 Corinthians 5.17.

  1216. Therefore,

  1217. if anyone is

  1218. in Christ,

1219. he is a new creation.

  1220. The old has

  1221. passed away.

  1222. Behold,

  1223. the new

  1224. has come.

  1225. Father,

  1226. we confess

  1227. we are united

  1228. to you

  1229. only because

  1230. of Jesus Christ.

  1231. It's a mystery

  1232. to us.

  1233. We're like

  1234. these little children

  1235. that you've revealed

  1236. yourself to us.

  1237. There's no other

  1238. explanation

  1239. except that this

  1240. is your good

  1241. pleasure.

  1242. You have chosen us.

  1243. You have called us

  1244. your friends.

  1245. We praise you,

  1246. God the Son,

  1247. that you are

  1248. the true vine.

  1249. We praise you

  1250. that we've experienced,

  1251. we've tasted

  1252. new life

  1253. in you.

  1254. We ask,

  1255. Father,

  1256. that you will make

  1257. your love

  1258. real in our lives.

  1259. Make your love

  1260. our own.

1261. Help us to see this.

1262. We want to see this

  1263. peaceful fruit

  1264. of righteousness.

  1265. because we are

  1266. engrafted into Christ.

  1267. Please teach us

  1268. what it means

  1269. to abide

  1270. in our Savior

  1271. and rest in Him

  1272. as our friend.

  1273. We pray this

  1274. for your glory

  1275. and for Christ's sake.

  1276. Amen.
