  1. Proverbs chapter 13, Proverbs chapter 13.

Proverbs 13 chapter mention Proverbs 13 chapter mention

  2. It's amazing how God uses the music and the singing to point

  3. to the message. And that's exactly what we're

  4. going to talk about tonight. I'm finishing up with a series

  5. that we've been working on and I'm still doing our discovering

  6. the stories of the Bible. And I told you that as we go

  7. through that, I'm going to kind of do some of these different

  8. messages on the family. And I've been in this one for a

  9. little bit and finishing up with it tonight.

  10. Probably could have finished up with it last time.

  11. It's not going to be a real long message tonight, but I didn't

  12. want to, didn't want to rush through it.

  13. Just a reminder, I forgot to mention this during the

  14. announcements, but the essay contest that we're doing for the

  15. young people that are going to camp.

  16. If you've been taking notes, and you should be, most of them are,

  17. most of you are, but find a message that God used in your

  18. heart and write an essay. 200 words, at least 200 words, I

  19. guess try not to write a book, I suppose, but at least 200 words

  20. of of how that message spoke to your heart.

  21. How how it can change your life if you apply it to your heart.

  22. And brother Gary was passing out the papers.

  23. I think he put his e-mail address on there.

  24. You can send it to him and he's got a little panel of judges

  25. that are going to judge those. And we're going to have a $25

  26. for the, for the winner 13 years old and up and $25 for the

  27. winner, 12 years old and under that you can use at camp next

  28. week. So work on that.

  29. It's a great, great opportunity to apply what you've been

  30. learning and what you are, what you know, what you're taking the

  31. notes. It's, it's not just an exercise

  32. to practice your handwriting. It's it's there so you can use

  33. the opportunity to go back and look at those notes so you can

  34. hopefully capture some things from the messages and writing

  35. about it is certainly going to be one of those things that

  36. helps. So hope every one of you will

  37. will take part in that and send that send that essay.

  38. You have till Friday. So you only got a few days, but

  39. campus we're leaving Sunday. So I can give you a whole lot of

  40. time to do that. But anyway, make sure you work

  41. on that this week. And I'm sure your parents can

  42. help you type it up. Parents, you cannot type it for

  43. them, but you can you can you can type what they write.

  44. Let's put it that way. All right, but anyway, Justin

  45. finally decided to come back to church tonight and I brought

  46. somebody with him. So it's good to have Ashley here

  47. and totally different person when when she's here, you can

  48. tell. But anyway, say hi to her when

  49. you get a chance to do that tonight and that's good to have

  50. good to have them. He's been a great help this

  51. summer and he's going back to school, but it's just been a

  52. really good opportunity. Sure, go ahead.

  53. And I know a lot of you have gotten to know him and and work

  54. together with him on a lot of different things that I gave him

  55. to do. And it's just been a good

  56. experience for him, but a good help to us.

  57. And so I appreciate that. But what I want to, what I want

  58. to talk to you about tonight, and we've been talking about a

  59. godly influence and really the influence of a parent, the power

  60. of a parents influence is what we've been talking about.

  61. And I gave you a bunch of other things, but the one that I gave

  62. you last time and, and this is kind of continuing this thought

  63. that that I want to continue with tonight and just kind of

  64. finish up with this is the influence that we have through a

  65. godly environment. That was the point that I gave

  66. you last week. And or maybe it wasn't last

  67. week, maybe it was 2 weeks ago. But either way, just having

  68. biblical order in the home and doing things God's way, doing

  69. things that are pleasing to the Lord, making sure that the

  70. entertainment that you have in your home is things that are,

  71. are not just fun and enjoyable and, and entertaining, but that

  72. it's an entertainment that is pleasing to the Lord.

  73. That ought to be. That ought to be the criteria

  74. for everything that you do in your home.

  75. Is it pleasing to the Lord or is it not?

  76. And if it's not, you shouldn't do it.

  77. Doesn't matter how fun it is. Doesn't matter how much you feel

  78. like you'd be missing out if you didn't do it.

  79. If it's right, it's right. If it's wrong, it's wrong.

  80. And that that ought to be the criteria for everything that we

  81. do. But tonight then I want to talk

  82. to you about this. And, and you're there in

  83. Proverbs chapter 13. But the influence through

    Proverbs 13 chapter mention

  84. Christian servants, you have the influence of a, of a, of a godly

  85. example of a biblical home and a biblical model and all those

  86. things. But an influence through

  87. Christian servants. We've been talking about

  88. Timothy. Timothy is a great example of

  89. this, of the power of a parent's influence.

  90. Besides Timothy's mother and grandmother, which we know that

  91. they obviously had a great impact on him, the influencer

  92. with the greatest impact on Timothy's life was the apostle

  93. Paul. Timothy's mother and grandmother

  94. had to let the apostle Paul in to influence their son.

  95. And you know, we caution our children many times against

  96. having the wrong friends and we should.

  97. But sometimes as parents, I think we forget to purposefully

  98. place wise and godly influences in their lives.

  99. The Bible says this in Proverbs chapter 13 and verse #20 He that

    Proverbs 13 chapter mention

  100. walketh with wise men shall be wise, but a companion of fools

  101. shall be destroyed. You have to be very careful and

  102. very intentional about who the influences are that you let in

  103. your children's life. But you should be letting those

  104. influences into your children's life that are going to help them

  105. and that are godly. You can do it a lot of this on

  106. your own, but you need the church.

  107. You need the church. And I saw, I want you to notice

  108. a couple of ways that you can kind of maybe augment, if you

  109. can use that word, your influence in your children's

  110. life. What can you do to help the

  111. influence that you already have in their life?

  112. Obviously, as a parent, you are the most important people in

  113. your children's life. You are the one that is going to

  114. influence them the most by far. But there's other people who can

  115. influence them as well, and you need to allow that influence to

  116. take place. So let me let me just give you a

  117. couple things here tonight. And like I said, I'm really not

  118. going to be that long. We're going to have the this ice

  119. cream and stuff afterwards. But I hope this will be a help

  120. to you tonight. But let's have a word of prayer

  121. and then we'll jump in and talk about a few of these things.

  122. Father, again, we thank you so much for your goodness to us.

  123. I thank you for the good Sunday you've given us so far.

  124. Thank you for those that you brought here this morning, some

  125. that were here for the very first time.

  126. God, I pray that you would just use the message in their hearts.

  127. Use the messages in our hearts as well.

  128. And God, I pray that you would just give us something from your

  129. word tonight. That'll be a help to us.

  130. And again, we thank you for all you do for us in Jesus name,

  131. Amen. Influences through Christian

  132. servants, first of all, would be an influence through the godly

  133. teachers. Just imagine what it must have

  134. been like for Timothy the day that he first heard Paul preach.

  135. Now Timothy didn't have a great influence.

  136. His father was a Greek, and from everything that we can tell,

  137. Timothy's father was not a Christian.

  138. He had a godly mother and he had a godly grandmother.

  139. But here comes this man to town. And of course, you know, I can

  140. imagine the apostle Paul and he even wrote this himself, you

  141. know, basically mighty in pen but not very mighty in speech.

  142. And I don't know, a lot of people think that Paul was

  143. probably a short little fella, that he had a problem with his

  144. eyesight, that he just wasn't, wasn't much to look at.

  145. And when you see somebody like the apostle Paul, you would not

  146. think that he had the great power that he had.

  147. And of course, you know, we're looking at it in hindsight. 20

  148. You know, everybody when you say Paul, everybody has a picture in

  149. their mind of what they think Paul looked like, right?

  150. Which, by the way, is one of the reasons why I don't like a lot

  151. of these, like The Chosen and some of these others.

  152. It puts in your mind what you should be thinking about the

  153. Bible, right? The Passion of the Christ was a

  154. movie that was so popular that came out, you know, I don't

  155. know, 20 years ago now, probably I never watched it.

  156. I never, I, I had a desire. I thought it would be an

  157. interesting movie to watch, but I never watched it because I

  158. didn't want Hollywood telling me what the crucifixion looked

  159. like. I have a picture in my mind when

  160. I read the Bible of what everything looked like.

  161. Of course, I went to Israel and the picture changed a little

  162. bit, but I'm looking at the actual place where Jesus was

  163. crucified and I see the, the, the, the, the whole crucifixion

  164. scene before my eyes as I read through the Bible.

  165. And I don't want somebody as wicked as Hollywood telling me

  166. what the crucifixion looked like.

  167. Now, every time you read the crucifixion, you see Mel Gibson

  168. or whoever it was that acted out in that, in that movie and you

  169. see this actor and that actor trying to portray who these

  170. people are. I don't want somebody telling me

  171. that. And, and you know, it's not,

  172. maybe that's not a biblical thing necessarily, but I keep it

  173. that way because I don't want them telling me what the Bible

  174. says. Not to mention that a lot of

  175. these things have a whole lot of extra biblical things in there

  176. that are not even biblical in the 1st place.

  177. But that's, that's beside the point.

  178. But the Apostle Paul, I don't know what kind of man he was.

  179. I don't know what kind of guy he looked like, but I can imagine

  180. him the first time that he comes to Timothy's little town and

  181. Timothy, as a young man, hears the apostle Paul preach.

  182. He had traveled to Lystra, which was Timothy's hometown, and he

  183. had come from Iconium. And the reason he left Iconium

  184. is because they were threatening to stone him there.

  185. So Paul leaves Iconium and he comes to Lystra.

  186. And in Lystra, Paul preaches the gospel.

  187. And maybe something went off in Timothy's head.

  188. The light bulb came on, so to speak, and he saw the Messiah

  189. that he has so diligently studied and learned about in his

  190. youth. And we know that his parents,

  191. his mother at least, and his grandmother taught him the

  192. scriptures because they said, remember the things that you've

  193. learned and has been assured of and and all of those things that

  194. they'd have been taught. But Paul then after he preaches

  195. this message heals A crippled man.

  196. And for the first time, these men and, and ladies and young

  197. men and young ladies that that knew that this man was crippled,

  198. that had been that way for his entire life, they see him

  199. leaping and running around and shouting for joy.

  200. And, and it's just an amazing thing to see these things.

  201. And, you know, the superstitious people in the in the city

  202. started treating Paul and Barnabas as if they were gods.

  203. And here Paul and Barnabas are using this opportunity to say,

  204. don't look at us. We're not, we're nothing

  205. special. We're not gods.

  206. Look at thee, God. And they used that opportunity

  207. to share the gospel with the people there in Timothy's town.

  208. And as Timothy sat and watched all that kind of stuff, he must

  209. have marveled at these, these missionaries, if you will,

  210. that's exactly what they were that used every opportunity they

  211. could to share the gospel. And something inside of Timothy

  212. stirred up and, and he must maybe even felt the sense of, of

  213. loss or grief after Paul left. Because you know what happened

  214. there at Lystra? They did actually stone Paul and

  215. they drug him outside of the city and they left him there for

  216. dead. Obviously God wasn't done with

  217. him yet, and Paul was still alive, and somehow he crawled

  218. out of the out of that pile of stones and went on for the Lord.

  219. But sometime later, Paul reappeared in Iconium and he was

  220. still preaching the gospel. And you can bet that when

  221. Timothy heard that Paul was there, I'm sure he ran to the

  222. place where he's at. He must have wondered at all of

  223. it, rejoiced in it. But somewhere in all of that,

  224. Timothy sensed the call of God in his life.

  225. And Timothy started realizing that God wanted him to be a

  226. preacher of the gospel. Who was going to train him?

  227. Who's going to help him to get to that point?

  228. Well, obviously Paul came along in God's timing.

  229. Timothy wasn't responding to some emotionally charged altar

  230. called or some sugar coated idea of what it would be like in the

  231. ministry. He saw all of it.

  232. He saw Paul get stoned and throwing outside of the city and

  233. left for dead. I'm sure he had heard and

  234. talking to Paul and listening to Paul preach about some of the

  235. things that he had actually gone through.

  236. Timothy was not under any impression that he was going

  237. into the ministry so he can make a lot of money.

  238. It wasn't under any impression that he was going to be very

  239. famous and be very well known and be received and liked by

  240. everybody. He saw Paul's example and he

  241. knew exactly what he was getting into.

  242. But that call of God in his life was strong, and God powerfully

  243. used Paul to influence Timothy's life and everything we read

  244. about Timothy and everything that we know that Timothy did

  245. with his life. You can't give all the credit to

  246. the apostle Paul, but you can give a lot of the credit to him

  247. because he trained Timothy to be what he became.

  248. And we have two books, First and Second Timothy, to show for what

  249. Paul did in training Timothy. He was to Timothy a spiritual

  250. father as well as a mentor. In fact, turn over to Second

  251. Timothy, chapter one, Second Timothy, chapter 1.

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  252. Paul addresses this book to Timothy and verse #2 to Timothy,

  253. my dearly beloved Son, grace, mercy and peace from God the

  254. Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

  255. Look at chapter 2, verse #2 and the things that thou has heard

  256. of me among many witnesses. The same commit thou to faithful

  257. men who shall be able to teach others also.

  258. Who did you say that about himself?

  259. The things that you've heard of me, the things that I've taught

  260. you do them and then teach them to other people.

  261. Go teach them again. And I, I want to say this as as

  262. as kind of a culmination of everything that we've just said.

  263. Wise parents are going to intentionally surround their

  264. parents with that kind of person.

  265. You are going to put those influences into your children's

  266. life that can influence them the most in a godly way.

  267. Now, listen, I know a lot of you homeschool and I, I'm 100% for

  268. homeschooling. It's a privilege.

  269. And my kids, they have an opportunity to go to a Christian

  270. School. We live farther down to 88 than

  271. most of you do. There's not a good Christian

  272. School that I know of in this area.

  273. And so you homeschool, and that's great.

  274. I think it's a great opportunity.

  275. It's much, it's a far better option than the public school.

  276. But homeschool does not necessarily mean Christian.

  277. And that's something you need to be very, very careful about as

  278. you are getting your children involved in homeschool things.

  279. You need to be very careful about who you allow your

  280. children to hang around. Just because they're

  281. homeschooled does not mean that it's Christian.

  282. And I've seen many, many kids derailed because the parents had

  283. them in homeschool co-ops and homeschool sports teams and

  284. homeschool this and homeschool that that ended up getting them

  285. completely off because they had them around the wrong kids first

  286. of all, but also around the wrong mentors.

  287. Just because somebody claims to be homeschooled and probably

  288. they are more conservative than most people would be, that's one

  289. of the reasons why they're homeschooling their kids too.

  290. But conservative does not mean Christian either.

  291. And you can have influences on your children that you are

  292. putting in front of them that are having a very negative

  293. influence on your kids. Not saying it's wrong to have

  294. your kids involved in those things, but what I am saying is

  295. you need to be very, very, very careful about who you put as

  296. influences in your children's life.

  297. Homeschooling groups can be a help, but they can also be a

  298. great hindrance. And you've got to be very

  299. careful about that. And I'm just saying this, not

  300. just homeschooling, but in, in general, across the board, you

  301. have your kids involved in a, in a public sports team.

  302. You ought to be there at every practice.

  303. You ought to be at every game, You ought to be involved in

  304. every minute of what your kids are doing in on that team.

  305. Because if you're not, you are opening the door for those

  306. influences to come in and tell your kids how to live, tell your

  307. kids how to act. Tell your kids how to do

  308. whatever it is that they want your kids to do.

  309. And you don't have any say in it because you don't even know

  310. what's being said. You don't know what's being

  311. done. You don't know what they're

  312. being taught. And listen, I'm for it.

  313. I think you ought to have your kids involved in sports.

  314. I think it's a great opportunity for them to to develop

  315. character. Sports helps develop character.

  316. You shouldn't put too much of an emphasis on it, right?

  317. Character is important, but spirituality and godliness is

  318. far more important than character.

  319. All right? So just because they're on a

  320. sports team doesn't mean that all those things come first.

  321. Because I'm trying to teach my kids character.

  322. You should be teaching them character, but not at the, not

  323. at the expense of their spiritual life, not at the

  324. expense of their relationship with God and the relationship

  325. with the church. That ought to be first and

  326. foremost. That ought to be #1 but if

  327. you're going to have them involved in a sports team, then

  328. you need to be involved in that sports team too.

  329. The things that are talked about in locker rooms, the things that

  330. are said by coaches, the language that's used by people

  331. who are not Christians, they don't care what kind of

  332. influence they have on your kids.

  333. They don't care that you go to church all the time.

  334. They don't care that you're involved in the ministries at

  335. your church. They're teaching.

  336. They're, they're coaching the sports team.

  337. They don't care. They're not, they're not looking

  338. out for your children and trying to influence them for, for

  339. holiness and godliness and all of those things.

  340. So who has to do that? You do, you need to be very,

  341. very, very careful about those things that you allow and who

  342. you allow to influence your children.

  343. But your children can be influenced through godly

  344. teachers and they should be. Now I will say this as well,

  345. your children can be influenced through godly helpers.

  346. And when we consider the people who have had a positive

  347. influence on us, it's probably more than just your parents and

  348. your teachers, right? You think about if you grew up

  349. in church, especially, there's a lot of people that you can point

  350. to in the church that you grew up with that we're just faithful

  351. and, and maybe are still faithful to this day at the

  352. church that you grew up at or, or you know them and they're

  353. still in church and they're still living for the Lord and

  354. they're still doing things for God.

  355. Those people have a powerful influence on you and they have

  356. been a they, they can, they, you know, they're not a pastor

  357. necessarily. They may not be a teacher in a

  358. Sunday school or something like that, but friends or coaches or

  359. laymen. Those people can have a powerful

  360. influence in a right way for your children as well.

  361. And maybe you've you've heard it said before, nearness is

  362. likeness. And it's true.

  363. If the primary influence on your children, aside from your

  364. family, is sports stars or social media influencers or

  365. celebrities, your children are going to aspire to be like them.

  366. Why do you think that every kid wants to grow up and go to the

  367. NBA or go to the NFL or go to, you know, some Major League

  368. sports? Because we've lifted those

  369. things up as the top of everything.

  370. I want to be like that, you know, and, and grown men walk

  371. around salivating over getting a signature from some football

  372. player. You know, I mean, you're telling

  373. your kids that that is the most important thing.

  374. And you shook my hand at the baseball game, right?

  375. I mean, do you realize how how stupid that really sounds when

  376. you when you actually stop to think about it?

  377. But yet how often I was at the airport and it was 500 yards

  378. away, but I saw this famous actor, he was walking to his

  379. plane. So I mean, he's going to his

  380. plane. Who cares who that guy is,

  381. right? How about do that with with

  382. preachers? You know, I'm not saying that we

  383. ought to lift preachers up above the the status that they ought

  384. to be lifted up above, but at the same time, why not make them

  385. the the, the, the, the ones that you want your kids to aspire to

  386. be like, put them on a different level, Not the sports stars, not

  387. the Hollywood actors, right? Those, you know, if you, if you

  388. make that the important things in your kids life, then that's

  389. the things that they're going to want to be, right?

  390. If it's all about movies and oh, this actor and that actor and

  391. oh, this sports star and that sports star and this guy and

  392. that guy and all these other things, you're telling them that

  393. that is the most important thing.

  394. And that's what they're going to want to be like.

  395. But on the other hand, if you encourage the influence of just

  396. godly servants of Jesus Christ, your children are going to want

  397. to walk with the Lord. Your children are going to want

  398. to be like that, just that faithful servant, right?

  399. And that's why I say, OK, maybe you're in here tonight and you

  400. don't have kids, or maybe your kids are grown, or maybe, you

  401. know, you've got grandkids. I don't know.

  402. And, and, and they live, you know, a long way away from here.

  403. You can have a powerful, powerful influence on the next

  404. generation, not just by the way that you act.

  405. The way that you live and the way that you're faithful and the

  406. way that you serve, all of those things are important, man.

  407. How about try to take some, some young man under your wing, some

  408. young lady under your wing and, and, and, and try to teach her

  409. how to be faithful. You know, my parents obviously

  410. had a very powerful influence on me growing up, but there were

  411. people who came along when I was in high school and in college

  412. who took me under their wing. And I don't know if I would be

  413. standing where I'm at today if it hadn't been for their

  414. influence. And I've told you this before,

  415. Pastor Whitaker is one of them. He's been here and preached.

  416. He's coming to preach our anniversary service this year.

  417. He had a powerful influence on my life.

  418. And it takes work, takes effort, right?

  419. You got to be there when you don't want to be there.

  420. You got to do things when you don't want to do things.

  421. But man, it changed my life. And you can change somebody

  422. else's life, too, but you have to be there.

  423. You got to be intentional about it.

  424. And parents, you ought to you ought to want to to to have that

  425. influence in your children's life.

  426. You ought to let people do those things when they want to do

  427. them. You know, as a family, you got

  428. to develop a relationship with your pastor.

  429. Yeah, I can't. I can't.

  430. I can't keep Brother Johnny away from me.

  431. The time I turn around, he's there.

  432. I'll go on a trip. Hey, can I go with you?

  433. I want to. I want to get to know my pastor.

  434. Just leave me alone for 5 minutes.

  435. No, I'm just kidding. I enjoy it.

  436. I, I want you to get to know me. I want to get to know you.

  437. I want to try to have the influence on you that I can have

  438. on you. And I certainly appreciate the,

  439. the iron sharpening iron and all of that stuff.

  440. But you need that your, your kids need that influence, right?

  441. I want to impact your children. I want to work with your

  442. children. But the problem is if you don't

  443. allow me to work with your children, I can't have that

  444. influence on them. If you, if you got this bubble

  445. around them and you protect them and you, you don't want anybody

  446. to see their flaws. You don't want anybody to think

  447. that they're not perfect. Listen, I know more than anybody

  448. that your kids are not perfect because I have 3 of my own and

  449. they're not perfect, right? And, and you let them get close

  450. to somebody who can help them and they're, those flaws are

  451. going to be exposed. And oh man, they're going to

  452. think that I'm not a perfect parent.

  453. And oh, they're going to think that we're doing all these

  454. things wrong and they're going to think this and they're going

  455. to who cares what people think? Everybody's in the same

  456. situation. We all have kids, and nobody's

  457. kids are perfect. Let people work with your young

  458. people. Let them correct your young

  459. people. Let them show you how you can

  460. help them become better young people.

  461. That's what I'm talking about. Lois and Eunice, Paul's, I mean

  462. Timothy's mother and grandmother, gave Paul the

  463. opportunity to work with Timothy, and Paul used that

  464. opportunity and look what he was able to do in helping Timothy

  465. grow up to live for the Lord. I would say this too, when,

  466. when, when guest preachers or missionaries come in, you ought

  467. to take your family over there and introduce them to the

  468. missionary, talk to the missionary.

  469. I mean, maybe it's not going to work out all the time, but offer

  470. to take them to lunch and let your kids sit there and talk to

  471. the missionary or the pastor. All right.

  472. Let them hear the stories that they have to say.

  473. Let them influence them. Get to know your children's

  474. teachers and, and youth workers and encourage that godly

  475. mentoring relationship. Your kids need those things.

  476. And it just might be that one person that, that, that that

  477. takes an interest in your child that really helps them get over

  478. the hump of rebellion or get past the, the, the struggles

  479. that they're, that they're facing of, of, of surrendering

  480. their will to God's will. Could be any of those things.

  481. But anybody, as long as they are, are, are godly, then they

  482. can be a great influence. And to develop that

  483. relationship, you have to make the local church a priority in

  484. your family. If you just show up to church

  485. here and there, nobody's going to get to know your kids.

  486. Nobody's going to be able to develop that relationship with

  487. your kids because you're just here randomly and we don't know

  488. when you're going to show up and we don't know when you're going

  489. to be there. And you set something up and you

  490. cancel it and you shut set it up again and you cancel it.

  491. And this time it doesn't work out.

  492. And that time it doesn't work out.

  493. You know, eventually what's going to happen, people are just

  494. going to stop trying. And whether it's true or not,

  495. they're just going to think that you gave up and you don't care

  496. and they're going to stop working with your kids.

  497. And you know what happens when you when you just hold them like

  498. this and you don't let anybody have them because they're my

  499. babies. I can't let my babies go, right?

  500. One of these days you're going to have to might as well do it

  501. when they have that godly influence that's going to help

  502. them to make it to that time when you're going to have to let

  503. them go. And you'll have a whole lot

  504. better chance of them staying straight when you let them go if

  505. you allow that godly mentoring in their lives.

  506. And it's the responsibility of the parents to filter the

  507. influence on their children's lives.

  508. It's, you know, some parents go overboard and they guard them

  509. from the influences that actually could be very helpful

  510. for them. And I've seen some of this, you

  511. know, over the, over the, I don't know, 1020, thirty years,

  512. there's been kind of a movement to to protect their children.

  513. Some parents, you know, my, my kids are going to stay with me

  514. everywhere. They're not going to Sunday

  515. school, they're not going to this class, they're not doing

  516. that. They're going to stay with me

  517. because I just, I don't know what's being said.

  518. I don't know who's, who's talking to them.

  519. I don't know what kind of influence they're going to have

  520. and go start a home church and just, you know, teach your kids

  521. everything you can teach them. And, and you know, no, it's,

  522. it's, it's not helpful. Get them under the influence of

  523. other godly people. Listen in a church like this, we

  524. vet everybody. You know, nobody's getting up in

  525. front of your kids and and teaching them how to, you know,

  526. play Dungeons and Dragons or something, right?

  527. They're not having video game battles in the in the back

  528. classroom. They're teaching your kids the

  529. Bible. Let them teach your kids the

  530. Bible. Let them mentor them.

  531. Let them influence them. Let them have that influence on

  532. them while they still can. Turn over to Galatians chapter

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  533. 4. I know you want to protect your

  534. kids because they're your babies, right?

  535. By the way, let me say this, especially when it comes to

  536. boys, mothers need to let their father be a dad and be hard on

  537. their boys sometimes. I know Mamas are always like,

  538. oh, you're going to hurt him. Oh, he's my baby.

  539. You can't say that to him. You can't do that, right?

  540. But dads know what toughness is. Moms don't, right?

  541. And if you want your baby to grow up and be a mama's boy and

  542. be soft and have little white pasty hands that don't know how

  543. to do anything, then keep babying your kids.

  544. But let your husband teach your boys how to be a man.

  545. Let them be hard on them sometimes, even if you think

  546. it's too hard on them sometimes. Give your husband the the

  547. opportunity to to exercise wisdom and how he handles your

  548. babies right, different with girls.

  549. All right, You want your, you want to treat your babies, your

  550. girls like babies, whatever. Treat your girls like babies if

  551. that's how you want them to grow up.

  552. I think it helps for them to be toughen up a little bit too, But

  553. let the husband, you let your husband be a father to the boys

  554. and you let your husband teach your boy how to be a man.

  555. You don't know how to be a man because you're not one.

  556. Let your husband, he's a man, teach your boys how to be men.

  557. There's so many, there's so many kids that grow up to be soft

  558. little mama's boys because they just, every time dad tried to be

  559. hard on them, they, they gathered them under their wings

  560. and walked away and didn't let dad do what needed to be done to

  561. make him tough. Let dad, let the dad, let your

  562. husband be the one that that toughens those boys up.

  563. But anyway, that was free. This is biblical philosophy.

  564. Our children need the influence of the local church.

  565. They need the influence of the blessings that come from the,

  566. the mentorships and everything else that can be given to the

  567. need. They need to be in Sunday

  568. school. They need to be under the

  569. influence of a pastor. They need the influence of a

  570. godly youth pastor. They need the mentorship of the

  571. men and the ladies in the church.

  572. Let them be around them, let them be around them.

  573. Keep an eye on them from a distance.

  574. If you want to do that, I think it's wise to do that too.

  575. But let them be around the men and the ladies that are going to

  576. be a godly influence on them. Galatians chapter 4 really

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  577. references the fact that even in the the Bible times, even all

  578. the way back here, children didn't just have parents that

  579. were influencing them. They had teachers.

  580. They had tutors and governors. This is what the Bible says.

  581. Galatians chapter 4, Sorry verse #1 Now I say that the heir, as

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  582. long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though

  583. he be Lord of all. But it's under tutors and

  584. governors until the time appointed of the father.

  585. Hey, the fact that it's saying that the tutors and the

  586. governors are teaching the children until the father deems

  587. that they've gotten enough and it's it's good enough, then let

  588. them be under those tutors and governors, right?

  589. There's danger everywhere and we do everything we can to protect

  590. our children. We, we check out the

  591. environments. I would never send them anywhere

  592. that I haven't been first, unless it's camp or something

  593. like that. But get to know the individual

  594. teachers, rely on the leading of the Holy Spirit when we, when we

  595. have some kind of maybe unexplainable caution.

  596. If there's some reason why you're really hesitant about

  597. something, then it might be the Holy Spirit that's, that's

  598. giving you that hesitation. But even then, we aren't God and

  599. we can't provide that infinite protection.

  600. One of these days, our kids are going to be gone.

  601. They're going to be on their own and they're going to have to

  602. make those decisions, right? So there may be a select

  603. instance, few selection instances maybe where you

  604. exercise that, that parental prerogative to say no to

  605. somebody that wants to help your children or wants to mentor your

  606. children or something like that. But I would say that don't, as a

  607. matter of principle, withhold your children of the benefit

  608. that they can receive from godly teachers and mentors.

  609. Turn over to Hebrews chapter 10. You just never know how God can

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  610. use those servants to encourage your children.

  611. The local church, for the most part, if you're in a church,

  612. that's that's that's trying to serve the Lord.

  613. If you're in a local church that's trying to live for the

  614. Lord, then most likely you're going to find just humble

  615. servants who are going to partner with you in loving your

  616. son and loving your daughter and pointing them toward Jesus

  617. Christ. Hebrews chapter 10 and verse #24

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  618. And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good

  619. works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together

  620. as the manner of some is, but exhorting one another, and so

  621. much the more as you see the day approaching.

  622. You know, parents are not adults, I should say, not just

  623. parents, but adults are not the only ones that need the

  624. spiritual exhortation of fellow believers, right?

  625. This is written to Christians, not just to parents.

  626. Doesn't just say this is for the adults.

  627. Let us consider one another to provoke unto love into good

  628. works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves

  629. together, exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see

  630. the day approaching. That's for everybody, all right?

  631. The truth is we all need the local church, Not just moms and

  632. dads, but young people need the church too, right?

  633. Which is why it's such a such a hindrance to them when you have

  634. them in sports instead of being at church.

  635. Such a hindrance to them when you, when you send them or allow

  636. them to go do these other things instead of being at, at, at, at

  637. church. There's a lot of benefits that

  638. families receive who allow the help of godly influences on the

  639. lives of their children. And one of those blessings is

  640. encouragement. Another one is accountability

  641. for the whole family, right? You let your kid go with

  642. somebody else and he starts telling them, well, this is what

  643. we do in our family, right? Hey, I was going to say, hang on

  644. a second. If you want your kids to grow up

  645. and live for the Lord, why are you doing this at home?

  646. You know, I was talking to your son and oh boy, right?

  647. I mean, but hey, it's accountability is

  648. accountability. It helps keep you honest too,

  649. right? It helps ensure that you're

  650. doing things within your home. If you're willing to allow

  651. somebody else to help you mentor your children, then that's under

  652. the assumption that you're doing everything you can in your home

  653. to do what's right as well and to lead them in the right

  654. direction. Now, let me say this, when it

  655. comes to your influence in in this area as a parent as well.

  656. And we're we're basically done. But but don't expect your kids

  657. to follow the rules and your leadership when you are the

  658. exception to every rule, whether that be in the church or whether

  659. that be in, you know, wherever it happens to be, when you're

  660. the exception to every rule and you everybody else has to do it,

  661. but you don't. Your kids are going to see that.

  662. Don't expect them to follow your leadership.

  663. Don't expect them to follow your guidance.

  664. They're watching you. Well, you don't, you know, your,

  665. your kid sees every bit of that and they're taking notice when

  666. you're not excited in church. And again, I'm not.

  667. I mean, listen, we sing and we like to sing, right?

  668. And I think most of you sing to the best of your ability when

  669. you have the opportunity to sing.

  670. But the way you sing in church is the way your kids are going

  671. to sing in church, the way you get excited about being at

  672. church on Sundays, the way your kids are going to get excited

  673. about being in church on Sunday. If you just show up because

  674. that's what you have to do, then don't expect that your kids are

  675. going to be excited about it. They might be now because they

  676. don't really have a choice #1 they're coming to see their

  677. friends and they're going to, you know, they're going to do

  678. different things that they have going on.

  679. But 10 years from now, they're going to remember how excited

  680. you were or were not about being in church.

  681. And Oh well, 10 years from now, I mean, that's it.

  682. No, it makes a big difference. It has a big impact on your

  683. children when you can throw yourself into your hobbies and

  684. your, your, your true passions, but you're just going through

  685. the motions and your spiritual things.

  686. You're setting a standard and you're setting a pattern for

  687. your kids to follow. And they're going to follow that

  688. pattern. That's exactly what they're

  689. going to do too. And they're not going to be

  690. excited about the things of God. They'll be excited about the

  691. things that they want to do with their life.

  692. They're not going to be excited about living for the Lord.

  693. Don't expect your kids to walk around with a good attitude at

  694. church or at home. If you don't, don't expect your

  695. kids to love the Lord with all their hearts.

  696. If you don't, you might fool them for a while, but they're

  697. not dummies and they're watching you.

  698. Eventually they're going to figure it out and they're going

  699. to know that you're just going through the motions and that's

  700. exactly what they're going to see is acceptable and it's

  701. exactly what they're going to eventually do.

  702. And one of these days you're going to wake up and you're

  703. going to say, I don't know why my kids are not in church.

  704. I don't know why they decided to, you know, they just made the

  705. decision. They started rejecting God and

  706. they started going their own way.

  707. And I don't know why. And I'm going to say This is why

  708. right here. Because you weren't excited

  709. about it. Why do you think they're going

  710. to be excited about it? You didn't have to do it.

  711. Why do you think they're going to do it?

  712. You are an example. You are their number one mentor.

  713. But even where you fail, sometimes maybe somebody else

  714. can come along and help you keep pulling the slack.

  715. And maybe where you would fail and it would mean that your kids

  716. are going to fail, you allowed them to be under the influence

  717. of somebody who cared about them the same way that you do, maybe

  718. not as much, but in the same way that you do.

  719. And they didn't because they had that godly influence.

  720. Now look, Lois and Eunice were obviously a very strong

  721. influence on Timothy, but they allowed Paul come in behind them

  722. and shore up everything that they had been teaching him

  723. already. And the influence that Paul had

  724. on Timothy made a huge difference.

  725. My son in the faith is what Paul called him.

  726. And I don't know if all Timothy had was Lois and Eunice, if he

  727. would have failed or if he would have made it.

  728. I don't know. But I know this having Paul

  729. along certainly didn't hurt. And if everything we read in the

  730. Bible is an indication of the way things went, then having

  731. Paul along almost made Timothy successful.

  732. The home is a God ordained institution.

  733. That's where it all starts and it's so important.

  734. But so is the church. And your kids need the church

  735. just as much as you need the church.

  736. And your kids need that godly mentorship.

  737. Your kids need that godly leadership that they have in

  738. their lives. And when we neglect to focus on

  739. the other, when we neglect to focus on the church side of

  740. things, and the foundation for both of those is going to

  741. crumble. If we as parents neglect the

  742. local church, then we're sending the message that we know more

  743. than God what's best for our home.

  744. Because God said don't forsake the assembling of yourself

  745. together. He said He loved the church so

  746. much that He gave his life for it.

  747. You ought to love it the same way.

  748. You'll love the people in it the same way, and you ought to treat

  749. the people in it the same way. We as parents need the

  750. accountability and the teaching that a church provides if we

  751. want to have a positive influence on our children.

  752. So we're coming to a close with this whole thing about the power

  753. of your influence. We've talked a lot about it.

  754. We've, we've mentioned a lot of different things and I hope

  755. you'll take it seriously because you have the influence over your

  756. children. And if you don't intentionally

  757. set out to influence your children, then what you're doing

  758. is opening the door for somebody else to do it.

  759. Social media, Hollywood, professional sports, public

  760. school teachers, people in Walmart, you're giving them the

  761. influence over your children. If you're not intentionally

  762. influencing your children, God gave you one of the greatest

  763. gifts when you had children, and that is the influence that you

  764. can have to either raise them for the Lord or to allow them to

  765. go live their lives or whether they want to.

  766. You have that. You have that influence if

  767. you're willing to take it. And not just parents, but

  768. everybody in the church, you have the influence too.

  769. And I hope that you'll take it seriously.

  770. And we got a lot of young, a lot of young kids running around

  771. here, a lot of young people that have some great potential to do

  772. some things for the Lord. The way you interact or don't

  773. interact could have a huge impact on whether they grow up

  774. to live for the Lord. I could, I could, I could, I

  775. would need probably four or five hands to list you the people

  776. that I know of that I grew up that, that, that, that grew up

  777. at the same time that I did who were, who were faithful people

  778. in the church who are still faithful today.

  779. And then I look at it and I say, man, look at that.

  780. They're still going. That's, that's been 40 years, 50

  781. years. They've been, they've been in

  782. the same church living for the Lord, serving the Lord.

  783. It has an impact because when you go back and you see the same

  784. people serving the same ministries doing the same thing

  785. that they've always done for the Lord, that's encouraging.

  786. It's encouraging. And you might think I'm just

  787. part of the church. You know, my kids are already

  788. grown and my kids are living in some other part of the country.

  789. And, you know, I don't really know.

  790. You have a huge impact. You have a huge impact on the

  791. next generation. Maybe not as much as the parents

  792. that have kids that are here, but you have a big impact.

  793. And you can be that godly leadership.

  794. You can be that godly mentor that that young person needs to

  795. help them become just exactly what God wants them to become.

  796. Parents, first and foremost, it's your job.

  797. It's your responsibility. You have the influence.

  798. Secondly, there's a lot of people that you can, that you

  799. have that will help you do it if you're willing to let them.

  800. Influence is a very powerful tool.

  801. Sees it, use it. God gave it to you.

  802. What are you doing with it? Are you being a positive

  803. influence? Are you going to be one of those

  804. ones that wakes up someday and says, I don't know why my kids

  805. don't want to live for the Lord, but you never use the influence

  806. that God gave you. Let's pray.

  807. Father, again, we thank you so much for your goodness.

  808. We thank you for an opportunity. We have to be here tonight.

  809. Thank you for the opportunity You've given every one of us

  810. parents maybe first and foremost to influence our young people,

  811. but everybody in this room tonight that has an opportunity

  812. to influence the next generation for the cause of Christ.

  813. God, may we take that seriously. And God, may we not lose one

  814. single young person in this church to the world.

  815. May every single parent have the wisdom and the spiritual insight

  816. and the godly desire to live in such a way that their young

  817. people will grow up in their homes and live for you.

  818. You give that same godly desire for holiness and godliness and

  819. righteousness to every single person in the church to be an

  820. example to the next generation. May every single one of them

  821. grow up and do exactly what it is that you've laid out from

  822. them to do from the beginning of the foundation of the world.

  823. May every one of them serve you with their lives.

  824. Thank God. I pray that you'd give us great

  825. impact on this world because of it.

  826. Thank you again for all that you do for us.

  827. In Jesus name, Amen.
