  1. Through the Gospel of John, the fourth Gospel.

  2. So please turn to John chapter 16 today.

    John 16 chapter mention

  3. John chapter 16, our sermon text is verses 1 through 15.

    John 16 chapter mention

  4. As I read John 16, 1 through 15 today, remember this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear and sufficient word.

  5. This is God's very own word for you, His people.

  6. If you believe that, if you receive God's word that way, when I'm done reading it, I'll say, this is the word of the Lord, and we'll respond, thanks be to God.

  7. John 16, beginning at verse 1.

  8. Jesus, in the last moments with His disciples, He's already left the upper room, either walking toward the Garden of Gethsemane or already there teaching them.

  9. And He listened to what He says.

  10. He says,

  11. concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me.

  12. Concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see Me no longer.

  13. Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

  14. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

  15. When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.

  16. For He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears, He will speak.

  17. And He will declare to you the things that are to come.

  18. He will glorify Me, and He will take away what is Mine and declare it to you.

  19. All that the Father has is Mine.

  20. Therefore, I said that He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.

  21. And this is the word of the Lord.

  22. Thanks be to God.

  23. Thanks be to God.

  24. Indeed, you may be seated.

  25. The Bible says that the grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  26. Let's pray.

  27. Lord, we thank you that you are not silent, that your word comes to your people again and again and again.

  28. We thank you, Lord, for what you said to your disciples,

  29. and what your Holy Spirit caused the disciples and the apostles to remember and write down.

  30. And we pray, Lord, that today your Holy Spirit will apply your word to our lives.

  31. Lord, we pray that as we hear your word, we will obey you immediately.

  32. That we will receive your word as the food that we need to eat today, Lord.

  33. You know all that we come needing, Father.

  34. We need more faith.

  35. We need more hope.

  36. We need more comfort.

  37. We turn to nothing besides you.

  38. So please feed us today, Lord.

  39. We are your children.

  40. May your word feed your children, Father.

  41. Grow our hope.

  42. Establish us in the faith.

  43. And equip us for your mission, we pray.

  44. Amen.

  45. Well, beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  46. I want to try to show you today what I believe Jesus wants you to know about this hour.

  47. It's what disciples must know about this hour.

  48. Our faith, we believe it and we receive it.

  49. But isn't it true that most of the time it's below the surface?

  50. We know there's a glorious gospel, like a great treasure.

  51. We know it and we hold to it.

  52. But it often doesn't glimmer in all of its glory until we're pressed and until we're in a moment of crisis.

  53. Isn't that true?

  54. We're in this hour in which God is ministering to us by the power of his spirit.

  55. And in moments of crisis, we see the glory of Christ, that only he could have done that in a person's life.

  56. And it brings him all the glory.

  57. There's one such moment I heard about from a brother who lived in South Africa.

  58. And he's still a living man.

  59. He's still alive.

  60. This is our generation.

  61. He's a man of dark skin in South Africa, which is a divided country with a long history of racism.

  62. His name was Moses.

  63. He was introduced to us as Brother Moses.

  64. He worked as a school administrator in South Africa.

  65. And he shared this terrible story of how these white racist men ran over his own son on purpose with a pickup truck.

  66. His son went to the hospital and died.

  67. That's the first part of this moment of crisis.

  68. I'm going to tell you more about him later.

  69. What came out of his lips next could only be explained as a man who has the glory of the gospel like a hidden treasure in his life.

  70. He's a man living in this final hour where all of these promises that Jesus gives to his disciples are put on display.

  71. It's still happening.

  72. God still does this in your life and in mine.

  73. So that's what you need to understand.

  74. What is true about this hour that we live in?

  75. The hour that was inaugurated by the disciples.

  76. And that is the hour until Christ returns.

  77. See, the shepherd had called these sheep.

  78. They heard his voice.

  79. They followed him.

  80. Jesus has told them, apart from me, you can do nothing.

  81. You can just picture the disciples walking with them with sorrowful hearts.

  82. And they say, yes, we believe that.

  83. And then in the next breath, Jesus says, I'm going away.

  84. Well, Lord, you're going away.

  85. And apart from you, we can do nothing.

  86. Where does that leave us?

  87. They're gripped by fear and sorrow.

  88. But Jesus tells them, this is to your advantage.

  89. How can that be?

  90. And that's what he answers in these verses.

  91. Look at verse 2.

  92. Jesus says, indeed, the hour is coming.

  93. It's not going to last forever.

  94. It'll go fast.

  95. But it's coming.

  96. He says, I'm going to send you out as sheep among the wolves.

  97. I wash your wool, and it's white because I washed you.

  98. Those woes are going to sink their fangs into you.

  99. You're going to bleed.

  100. You're going to give up your lives for my sake.

  101. But this hour is to your advantage.

  102. Look at verse 4.

  103. Jesus said, I've said these things to you that when the hour comes,

  104. you may remember all I told you.

  105. So three headings of what you need to know if you're a disciple of Christ about this hour.

  106. Number one, if you are a disciple of Christ, expect persecution from unexpected people.

  107. If you are a disciple of Christ, expect persecution from unexpected people.

  108. In the old covenant, being born an Israelite, it meant that your parents are what make you part of the covenant community.

  109. Well, the Apostle Paul in Romans 9-6 reveals by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit

  110. that not all who are descended of Israel belong to Israel.

  111. Jesus said, I am the true vine.

  112. Only those grafted into me bear fruit, Jesus said.

  113. If you are a disciple of Jesus Christ, expect surprising persecution.

  114. I see three things Jesus said.

  115. He gives them two warnings and one encouragement.

  116. Warning number one, Christ warns his disciples, his true church,

  117. he says, you will be hated by the religious elite when you follow me.

  118. Look at verse one again.

  119. He said, I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.

  120. The Greek word is, it's a rude word of scandalous.

  121. I say these words to keep you from being scandalized.

  122. In the King James, it's to keep you from being offended.

  123. Do you get the picture?

  124. You're going to be persecuted.

  125. Verse two, they will put you out of the synagogues.

  126. They will hate you.

  127. So the question is, who is they?

  128. Well, in John 15, 18, he says, when the world hates you,

  129. know that it hated me before it hated you.

  130. So it's going to be the world that hates you.

  131. But this, he said, of the rulers of the synagogue,

  132. they are the worldly ones.

  133. And in John chapter nine, verse 22, we saw this months ago.

  134. There was the man born blind from birth.

  135. And the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus

  136. to be the anointed one, the Messiah, the Christ,

  137. that he would be put out of the synagogue.

  138. So these rulers of the synagogue were the religious elite.

  139. And Jesus is saying those are the men who are worldly.

  140. They are of the world.

  141. John Gill commented on the language used here,

  142. not put out in the lesser sense,

  143. like here's one local synagogue, but there's many others.

  144. This being put out of the synagogue,

  145. it was the greatest form of discipline

  146. that they had authority to carry out.

  147. All of their hatred and all of the spite they had toward Jesus Christ,

  148. they were going to carry out on his disciples,

  149. on those who followed him.

  150. Gill pointed out that it's the greatest excommunication.

  151. A person was cut out from the whole body of the Jewish community,

  152. which is often referred to as the synagogue

  153. or the congregation of the people.

  154. It was to be given over to utter destruction.

  155. Jesus is saying, disciples, my true disciples,

  156. brace yourself for the rage of the religious elite.

  157. They will hate Christ,

  158. and they will hate you who belong to Christ.

  159. There's one way to get out of that,

  160. because that sounds awful.

  161. I love how Vodibachum put it.

  162. He said, persecution can be avoided.

  163. All you have to do is compromise.

  164. Jesus said very clearly in Luke 9, 23,

  165. if anyone would come after me,

  166. let him deny himself

  167. and take up his cross daily

  168. and follow me.

  169. And in Luke 14, 28,

  170. Jesus warns all of his true disciples

  171. to count the cost.

  172. This is one of the costs

  173. disciples must count.

  174. The second warning Jesus gives is this.

  175. Christ warns you, disciple,

  176. many who think they serve God

  177. are enemies of Christ's true church.

  178. Many who think they serve God

  179. are enemies of Christ's true church.

  180. That's what he warns them

  181. in verses 2 and 3.

  182. Look in your Bible.

  183. He says,

  184. Indeed, the hour is coming

  185. when whoever kills you

  186. will think he is offering

  187. a service to God.

  188. Do you get the picture?

  189. Here's a lamb that followed

  190. the good shepherd

  191. and heard his voice.

  192. And they're going to take that lamb

  193. and they're going to slaughter it.

  194. And they think they're offering

  195. that as a sacrifice to God.

  196. Verse 3 says,

  197. They will do these things

  198. because they have not known

  199. the Father nor me.

  200. The disciples were following Christ,

  201. going into it,

  202. expecting that they would have

  203. to have their lives taken

  204. by the men of the world.

  205. What makes it even harder to bear

  206. is that when their lives get taken,

  207. those who did that

  208. think they're doing it

  209. out of zeal and love for God.

  210. John Gill said,

  211. Those men believe that

  212. whoever sheds the blood

  213. of a wicked man

  214. is one who is then

  215. offering a sacrifice.

  216. This is a gift to God.

  217. They thought that sacrifice

  218. would have been acceptable

  219. and well-pleasing to God.

  220. Well, who immediately comes to mind

  221. as one who did exactly that?

  222. It was Saul, wasn't it?

  223. Saul of Tarsus.

  224. He thought he was doing this

  225. as a service unto the Lord,

  226. going out of his way

  227. and persecuting the Christians,

  228. taking their lives,

  229. thinking it was to please God.

  230. Well, Sinclair Ferguson pointed out,

  231. Real loyalty to Christ,

  232. it does create friction

  233. in the hearts of those

  234. who pay Christ only lip service.

  235. Loyalty arouses the conscience

  236. and it leaves people

  237. with only two alternatives.

  238. Follow Christ or silence him.

  239. Often, their only way

  240. of silencing Christ

  241. is by silencing his servants.

  242. So count the cost, disciple.

  243. We're told by Paul,

  244. your life will be either

  245. a stench leading some to death

  246. as you follow Christ,

  247. or it'll be an aroma

  248. leading others to life.

  249. And it's nothing that you do.

  250. It's simply abiding in Christ.

  251. That's the effect it will have.

  252. So be warned.

  253. Many who think they serve God

  254. are enemies of Christ's true church.

  255. After those two warnings,

  256. I see an encouragement.

  257. Jesus Christ encourages his disciples.

  258. When your hour comes,

  259. remember my word.

  260. Christ encourages you

  261. who are his disciple.

  262. When your hour comes,

  263. remember his word.

  264. In verse 4, he says,

  265. I've said these things to you

  266. that when their hour comes,

  267. you may remember

  268. I told them to you.

  269. When that hour comes,

  270. these apostles would preach

  271. this glorious gospel

  272. after the Holy Spirit filled them.

  273. There's that man,

  274. a descendant of a Greek.

  275. The Spirit regenerated him

  276. and filled him.

  277. And he helps with serving the tables.

  278. He gets appointed as a proto-deacon.

  279. And he remembers these words

  280. that were written down

  281. by the apostles.

  282. And it's with joy

  283. that Stephen takes the stones

  284. on his head.

  285. And the Lord opens up

  286. the heavens to him

  287. like he had done to Ezekiel

  288. and the prophets.

  289. And he dies the martyr,

  290. the blood of Stephen.

  291. Remembering the word of God

  292. and declaring it

  293. with the last breath.

  294. And those who hear

  295. that gospel preached,

  296. God regenerates.

  297. And there's Saul,

  298. the criminal in this story,

  299. who God saves,

  300. God regenerates,

  301. reveals himself to Saul.

  302. Gives him a new name,

  303. you belong to me now.

  304. So when that hour comes

  305. for Paul now,

  306. Paul remembers the words

  307. of the Lord.

  308. And he says,

  309. I'm on that side

  310. with Stephen now.

  311. To die would be gain.

  312. It would be to my advantage

  313. to be with my Lord,

  314. but to live as Christ.

  315. And I lay my life down for him

  316. and I lay my life down

  317. for his people.

  318. Because he first laid down

  319. his life for me.

  320. God can save even Saul.

  321. And God can save you

  322. and God can save your enemy.

  323. God can save those

  324. who right now

  325. may be like Saul.

  326. They may be persecuting those

  327. who they should be loving.

  328. Saul later reflected on this

  329. when his name was Paul

  330. and he said,

  331. what I did as Saul,

  332. now I see as Paul,

  333. I did it ignorantly

  334. in unbelief.

  335. I did not know the Father.

  336. Although I knew all the Hebrew

  337. and I knew it all,

  338. I did not know Jesus Christ.

  339. So disciples,

  340. we can bear persecution

  341. with patience.

  342. As someone put it,

  343. we can pity our persecutors

  344. and we can pray for them.

  345. We can bear our sufferings

  346. with greater patience

  347. because we know that

  348. whatever we are going through

  349. was appointed by Christ

  350. for your life.

  351. And he said,

  352. this is what you should expect.

  353. That gives us comfort.

  354. A true disciple learns to trust

  355. the Word of God.

  356. That's what Jesus trusted.

  357. According to his human nature,

  358. Jesus trusted the Word of God

  359. for his life.

  360. Thomas Brooks, a Puritan, wrote

  361. that death shall be the funeral

  362. of all his sins,

  363. his sorrows,

  364. his afflictions,

  365. his temptations,

  366. his vexations,

  367. his oppressions,

  368. and his persecutions.

  369. This is what God promises.

  370. Do you receive and trust

  371. that promise?

  372. When you die in this life,

  373. it'll be the end of all of that.

  374. God's Word also promises

  375. that your death

  376. will be the resurrection

  377. of all your hopes,

  378. all your joys,

  379. all your delights,

  380. all your comforts,

  381. and all your contentments.

  382. This is what the Word of God promises.

  383. So, to die is gain, truly.

  384. And to live is Christ.

  385. So if you are a disciple of Christ,

  386. expect that type of persecution.

  387. We have been warned

  388. by Christ himself as his disciples.

  389. And we've been encouraged

  390. to hold on,

  391. remember his Word.

  392. The second heading is that

  393. if you are Christ's disciple,

  394. Christ promises help

  395. in your confusion and sorrow.

  396. If you are Christ's disciple,

  397. he promises help,

  398. with a capital H,

  399. in your confusion

  400. and in your sorrow.

  401. He promises this in verse 4.

  402. He understands his disciples

  403. will be confused.

  404. In verse 4 he says,

  405. I did not say these things

  406. to you from the beginning

  407. because I was with you.

  408. See, the very presence of Christ

  409. with his disciples

  410. made him the true object

  411. of the malice

  412. and the rage

  413. and the hatred against God.

  414. When he sent them out

  415. two by two to preach,

  416. he knew they were going

  417. to be persecuted

  418. at some level there,

  419. but it was not even directed

  420. at them.

  421. It was directed at the message

  422. and at Christ himself.

  423. He was with them

  424. and he gathered them back

  425. and he himself comforted them.

  426. He says,

  427. this is going to be different.

  428. It's not a quick mission

  429. and you come back

  430. and my presence comforts you.

  431. This is going to be different.

  432. In Matthew 10, 17,

  433. he said,

  434. you will be hated by all men,

  435. persecuted from city to city,

  436. beat in the synagogues,

  437. delivered up to councils

  438. and brought before kings

  439. and governors.

  440. But now this is why he says,

  441. you get a greater help.

  442. He says,

  443. it's to your advantage.

  444. You get the help,

  445. the comforter,

  446. the advocate.

  447. Look at verse 5.

  448. Now I am going to him

  449. who sent me

  450. and none of you asks me,

  451. where are you going?

  452. And then,

  453. Jesus is telling the disciples,

  454. there is a reality

  455. you don't even see.

  456. There is a realm

  457. you don't even access

  458. or can even dream of.

  459. And that's the glory

  460. set before him.

  461. And the thought of them,

  462. his disciples,

  463. being united to him

  464. was the joy

  465. with which he marched

  466. to the cross

  467. to pay for their sin.

  468. Christ had his future glory

  469. in mind

  470. because he knew

  471. from that place,

  472. that future glory,

  473. he would pour out

  474. his Holy Spirit

  475. on his disciples.

  476. He would be preparing

  477. mansions for them

  478. while his Holy Spirit

  479. would be carrying out

  480. his mission on earth

  481. of bringing the true heaven

  482. down to earth

  483. in a spiritual sense

  484. through the preached word

  485. gathered up

  486. into the church.

  487. So he looks at the disciples

  488. and he sees the sadness

  489. on their face.

  490. But in his heart,

  491. he knows the glory.

  492. He's comforting them

  493. with a promise

  494. that only he can imagine.

  495. So Christ understands

  496. that his disciples

  497. feel confused.

  498. But Christ also cares

  499. for his disciples

  500. in their deep sorrow.

  501. Look at verse 6.

  502. He says,

  503. because I have said

  504. these things to you,

  505. sorrow has filled your heart.

  506. He recognizes it

  507. and he tells them,

  508. I see you.

  509. I see what you're feeling.

  510. The reasons for their sorrow,

  511. he says,

  512. are these things.

  513. He says these things

  514. six times in this chapter.

  515. It's like a climax

  516. of what he's been preaching

  517. all along.

  518. Now he's just referring

  519. to it as a lump sum.

  520. These things,

  521. these things,

  522. these things.

  523. It's persecution.

  524. It's being put out

  525. of the synagogue

  526. by the elite.

  527. It's losing their lives.

  528. And the deepest point

  529. of their grief,

  530. it's that Christ himself

  531. would no longer be with them

  532. on this earth.

  533. So sorrow

  534. had filled the minds

  535. of the disciples.

  536. One commentator put,

  537. it had seized

  538. on all the powers

  539. and faculties

  540. of their souls

  541. that Christ recognizes that

  542. and calls it

  543. in this moment.

  544. He pauses his teaching

  545. and he identifies

  546. what it is

  547. on their faces.

  548. Not only does Christ

  549. comfort them

  550. and recognize that

  551. in their sorrow.

  552. Number three,

  553. Christ only does

  554. for his disciples

  555. what is best for them.

  556. In their confusion,

  557. in their sorrow,

  558. he says,

  559. what I am doing

  560. is to your advantage.

  561. This is for your good.

  562. Look at verse seven.

  563. I tell you the truth,

  564. it is to your advantage

  565. that I go away

  566. for if I do not go away,

  567. then the helper

  568. will not come to you.

  569. But if I go,

  570. then I will send him

  571. to you.

  572. He uses the phrase,

  573. I'm going away.

  574. He's using earthly language

  575. to tell them

  576. of the most glorious thing

  577. that has ever happened

  578. in human history.

  579. That God,

  580. who took on flesh,

  581. will march

  582. a journey to the cross

  583. and to the grave

  584. and he will be ascended

  585. at the right hand

  586. of the Father.

  587. That's the journey.

  588. That's the going away,

  589. this trip

  590. that he's telling them about.

  591. And he will come back.

  592. He says,

  593. it's to your advantage.

  594. Why is that?

  595. Theologically,

  596. what is happening

  597. in this going away,

  598. this full work of Christ?

  599. John Gill put it this way,

  600. I must go,

  601. in the words of Christ,

  602. to open the way for you

  603. into the Holy of Holies

  604. by my blood.

  605. I must go to remove

  606. all charges

  607. and accusations against you.

  608. I must go to take possession

  609. of heaven for you.

  610. I must go to prepare

  611. mansions for you

  612. to dwell with me

  613. in my Father's house.

  614. I must go to appear

  615. in the presence of God

  616. on your behalf.

  617. I must go to be your advocate.

  618. I must go to make intercession

  619. for all good things for you.

  620. I must go to mediate

  621. between you and God.

  622. I must go to present

  623. your petitions

  624. to the Father.

  625. I must go to see

  626. that every blessing of grace

  627. is applied to you,

  628. my people.

  629. That's why it's to

  630. the advantage of his disciples

  631. that Jesus go away.

  632. The last John Gill quote

  633. says,

  634. If Christ had not gone away

  635. to die and rise again,

  636. there would have been nothing

  637. for the Spirit to do.

  638. no blood to sprinkle,

  639. no righteousness to reveal,

  640. no fruit to bear,

  641. and no salvation to apply.

  642. In that moment of deep sorrow,

  643. of deep confusion,

  644. Jesus promises them,

  645. what I am doing

  646. is best for you.

  647. This is for your good.

  648. Do you trust me?

  649. Do you trust me?

  650. Do you trust me?

  651. And getting to know

  652. each one of you

  653. and different ones

  654. in our congregation,

  655. it's humbling.

  656. I'm humbled

  657. because I've not had to endure

  658. some of the most painful things

  659. imaginable

  660. that you've shared,

  661. that you had to endure.

  662. And so I feel like

  663. I'm not even the one

  664. who can comfort you

  665. because I have not identified

  666. with you in the suffering

  667. in that way.

  668. What I can do

  669. is give you the word

  670. of Jesus Christ.

  671. He identifies

  672. with those hardest things

  673. you went through.

  674. And in reasons

  675. we can't understand now,

  676. the confusion

  677. and the deep sorrow

  678. that we still feel,

  679. Jesus Christ says,

  680. whatever I do

  681. in your life,

  682. it is for your good.

  683. Do you trust my word?

  684. Do you trust the word

  685. of Jesus Christ,

  686. your Lord?

  687. If you are Christ's disciple,

  688. God promises help

  689. in your confusion

  690. and sorrow.

  691. Praise God for the Spirit

  692. who is our help.

  693. And that's our third

  694. and final heading for today.

  695. If you are Christ's disciple,

  696. His Spirit will

  697. guide you

  698. into all truth.

  699. If you are Christ's disciple,

  700. it's okay that you don't

  701. have it all figured out now,

  702. that you have big questions.

  703. His Spirit will guide you

  704. into all truth.

  705. What a glorious promise.

  706. The Holy Spirit,

  707. I'll show you four things here.

  708. number one,

  709. graciously convicts you.

  710. The Holy Spirit

  711. graciously convicts you.

  712. Look at verse 8.

  713. When He comes,

  714. the helper,

  715. the comforter,

  716. the advocate,

  717. the Spirit of truth,

  718. when He comes,

  719. He will convict

  720. the world

  721. concerning sin

  722. and righteousness

  723. and judgment.

  724. That's what He'll do.

  725. And then He opens it up,

  726. He unpacks it.

  727. And notice how each thing

  728. that the Spirit does

  729. points you where?

  730. It points you to Jesus Christ.

  731. So,

  732. we saw previously

  733. how the Holy Spirit

  734. is the second advocate.

  735. Jesus Christ is the advocate

  736. of His disciples.

  737. Jesus Christ is the advocate

  738. in heaven

  739. pleading your case,

  740. defending you

  741. in the legal court.

  742. Here,

  743. the Holy Spirit

  744. is advocating

  745. for Jesus Christ.

  746. It's the Spirit of truth

  747. pointing to Christ.

  748. So,

  749. the Holy Spirit

  750. in a legal court setting,

  751. the Holy Spirit

  752. is the defending attorney.

  753. And Jesus Christ

  754. is the one

  755. in heaven

  756. the Spirit defends.

  757. Well,

  758. what does that make us

  759. as disciples?

  760. We don't have to defend Christ.

  761. That makes us witnesses.

  762. I would like to call

  763. my first witness

  764. to the stand.

  765. Is what the Spirit

  766. is saying about Jesus Christ

  767. true in your life?

  768. Do you testify

  769. that this is true?

  770. If you take

  771. the Lord's Supper,

  772. you are proclaiming

  773. that gospel of Jesus Christ

  774. until the day

  775. that He returns.

  776. What is it

  777. that the Spirit

  778. testifies to

  779. and defends?

  780. Look at verse 9.

  781. Concerning sin

  782. because they do not

  783. believe in me,

  784. Jesus Christ.

  785. So the Spirit

  786. comes and convicts

  787. of sin

  788. so they will believe

  789. in Christ.

  790. It's a gracious conviction.

  791. That's the first use

  792. of the moral law

  793. in evangelism.

  794. We go to a community college

  795. we bring up

  796. any topic

  797. under the sun

  798. and we can use

  799. the moral law of God

  800. and the Spirit

  801. by the power of Christ

  802. will convict of sin.

  803. And that conviction

  804. of sin

  805. it makes you need

  806. I need a Savior.

  807. It makes you know that.

  808. And He humbles us.

  809. It's a gracious conviction

  810. that drives us

  811. to the cross

  812. of Jesus Christ.

  813. Acts 2.23

  814. this was inaugurated.

  815. The Spirit

  816. convicted the world

  817. not just these disciples

  818. not just the 3,000

  819. that would believe

  820. but He convicted

  821. all nations represented.

  822. Acts 2.23 says

  823. this Jesus

  824. Peter's preaching

  825. He was delivered up

  826. according to the

  827. definite plan

  828. and foreknowledge

  829. of God

  830. because you

  831. crucified

  832. and killed Him.

  833. You lawless men

  834. put the Son of God

  835. on the cross.

  836. And that's a gracious

  837. conviction

  838. to see your sin

  839. that put Him there.

  840. Jerry Bridges said

  841. conviction

  842. should actually grow

  843. throughout

  844. our Christian lives.

  845. In fact

  846. one sign

  847. of spiritual growth

  848. is an increasing

  849. awareness

  850. of our sinfulness.

  851. Jerry Bridges

  852. is saying

  853. you want to see

  854. a mature Christian

  855. there's a Christian

  856. who is so aware

  857. of his own sinfulness.

  858. So the Spirit

  859. graciously convicts you.

  860. Number two

  861. the Spirit

  862. shows you

  863. Christ's

  864. righteousness.

  865. It builds

  866. one builds on the other.

  867. Look at verse 10

  868. the Spirit

  869. ministers

  870. concerning righteousness

  871. Jesus says

  872. because I go to the Father

  873. and you will see me

  874. no longer.

  875. Now think about that

  876. what does going to the Father

  877. have to do with

  878. the righteousness of Christ?

  879. Well Jesus died

  880. for sin

  881. but He was only

  882. raised from the dead

  883. because

  884. the Father

  885. saw the obedience

  886. of the suffering servant

  887. His entire life

  888. His righteousness

  889. His active obedience

  890. His fulfillment

  891. of the moral law

  892. and because He was sinless

  893. and He died in our place

  894. now the Father

  895. raises Him

  896. from the dead.

  897. He says

  898. this is a life

  899. that merited

  900. eternal life

  901. not because He lacked anything

  902. but He merited it

  903. on behalf

  904. of His people

  905. of those He came to save.

  906. 1 Peter 1.8 says

  907. though you have not seen Him

  908. you love Him

  909. though you do not

  910. now see Him

  911. you believe in Him

  912. and rejoice

  913. with joy inexpressible

  914. filled with glory.

  915. That's the ministry

  916. of the Holy Spirit

  917. pointing to you

  918. yes

  919. you're a sinner

  920. you need to be forgiven

  921. and washed clean

  922. by His blood

  923. but it's His righteousness

  924. that covers you.

  925. It's the Spirit

  926. who gives you

  927. a joy inexpressible

  928. and filled with the glory

  929. of the Son

  930. His righteousness

  931. put unto you.

  932. Number three

  933. the Spirit shows you

  934. that Satan

  935. was crushed.

  936. The moment when

  937. when Christ

  938. suffered the wound

  939. on the heel

  940. the serpent's head

  941. was crushed.

  942. That same moment

  943. on the cross

  944. it was the death

  945. of death itself

  946. and the death

  947. of Jesus Christ.

  948. Look at verse 11

  949. the Spirit reveals to you

  950. concerning judgment

  951. because the ruler

  952. of this world

  953. is judged.

  954. What did Jesus

  955. accomplish on the cross

  956. according to

  957. Colossians 2

  958. 15 and 16

  959. on the cross

  960. Jesus Christ

  961. disarmed

  962. the rulers

  963. and authorities

  964. of the spiritual realm

  965. and put them

  966. to shame

  967. by triumphing

  968. over them

  969. in Christ.

  970. Number four

  971. the Spirit

  972. illuminates

  973. God's Word

  974. to you.

  975. The Spirit

  976. illuminates

  977. God's Word

  978. to you.

  979. Look at verse 12

  980. Jesus said

  981. I still have

  982. many things

  983. to say to you

  984. but you cannot

  985. bear them now.

  986. When the Spirit

  987. of truth comes

  988. He will guide you

  989. into all the truth

  990. and He will not

  991. speak on His own

  992. authority

  993. but whatever He

  994. hears He will speak

  995. and He will declare

  996. to you

  997. the things that

  998. are to come.

  999. He will glorify

  1000. me

  1001. for He will take

  1002. what is mine

  1003. and declare it

  1004. to you

  1005. and all that the

  1006. Father has

  1007. is mine

  1008. therefore I said

  1009. that He will take

  1010. what is mine

  1011. and declare it

  1012. to you.

  1013. the Holy Spirit

  1014. according to

  1015. verse 13

  1016. will guide

  1017. these apostles

  1018. into all

  1019. truth.

  1020. Yes there's

  1021. more revelation

  1022. the whole New Testament

  1023. still needs to be

  1024. written

  1025. and they will

  1026. take what is

  1027. Christ's

  1028. the full work

  1029. of Christ

  1030. and the Spirit

  1031. will open it up

  1032. for the church.

  1033. The Spirit

  1034. will help

  1035. these apostles

  1036. to declare it

  1037. and the New Testament

  1038. will be breathed

1039. out by the Holy Spirit

  1040. and now that

  1041. same Holy Spirit

  1042. who regenerates

  1043. and who calls you

  1044. to believe in Christ

  1045. that same Holy Spirit

  1046. ministers His own

  1047. word that He breathed

  1048. out to you

  1049. and He guides you

  1050. too through His word

  1051. into all truth.

  1052. That's why we believe

  1053. what Colossians 3.16

1054. we believe it as witnesses

  1055. we can testify

  1056. not only is this

  1057. what it says

  1058. this has been true

  1059. that as we let

  1060. the word of Christ

  1061. dwell in you richly

  1062. He establishes us

  1063. in our faith

  1064. we teach one another

  1065. into all wisdom

  1066. and we do this

  1067. with thankfulness

  1068. in our hearts

  1069. to God

  1070. it's the ministry

  1071. of the Holy Spirit

  1072. in us

  1073. if you are

  1074. Christ's disciple

  1075. His Spirit

  1076. will guide you

  1077. into all truth

  1078. so the focus today

  1079. is this hour

  1080. what we

  1081. as followers of Christ

  1082. need to know

  1083. about this hour

  1084. Jesus said

  1085. in verse 2

  1086. indeed

  1087. the hour

  1088. has come

  1089. in verse 4

  1090. He said these things

  1091. to disciples

  1092. that when the hour

  1093. has come

  1094. you'll remember

1095. what He had told you

  1096. Jesus said

  1097. of this hour

  1098. it is good

1099. it is to your advantage

  1100. this hour

  1101. is even better

1102. we wish we could be there

  1103. in the first century

  1104. and see

  1105. God

  1106. in the flesh

  1107. Jesus

  1108. we don't understand it

  1109. He says

  1110. what we have now

  1111. with the Holy Spirit

  1112. is better

  1113. this is

  1114. the glorious

  1115. hour

  1116. of the Holy Spirit

  1117. in the church

  1118. beloved brothers

  1119. and sisters

  1120. believe this today

  1121. this is the hour

  1122. according to

  1123. John 12

  1124. 23

  1125. yes

  1126. the hour

  1127. has come

1128. for the Son of Man

  1129. our Lord Jesus Christ

  1130. to be glorified

  1131. this is the hour

  1132. according to

  1133. John 16

  1134. in which

  1135. the Holy Spirit

  1136. applies the redemption

  1137. that Christ

  1138. accomplished

  1139. this is the hour

  1140. according to

  1141. John 4

  1142. 23

  1143. in which

  1144. the true

  1145. worshipers

  1146. will worship

  1147. the Father

  1148. in spirit

  1149. and in truth

  1150. this is the hour

  1151. according to

  1152. Matthew 10

  1153. 19

  1154. in which

  1155. when you get

  1156. delivered over

  1157. to those who

  1158. hate Jesus Christ

  1159. the Holy Spirit

  1160. will give you

  1161. what to say

  1162. this is the hour

  1163. in John

  1164. 1st John 2

  1165. 18

  1166. in which

  1167. many

  1168. will abandon

  1169. the faith

  1170. making it

  1171. plain

  1172. that they

  1173. were never

  1174. of the true

  1175. vine

  1176. this is the

  1177. hour in which

  1178. you who are not

  1179. of the world

  1180. will walk

  1181. with your shepherd

  1182. in this world

  1183. as sheep

  1184. among wolves

  1185. this is the hour

  1186. according to

  1187. 1st Corinthians

  1188. 4

  1189. 11

  1190. through 13

  1191. that

  1192. when you are

  1193. reviled

  1194. you will bless

  1195. when persecuted

  1196. you will endure

  1197. when slandered

  1198. you will pray

  1199. how glorious

  1200. God's power is

  1201. is often hidden

  1202. until we're in a

  1203. moment of crisis

  1204. brother Moses

  1205. of South Africa

  1206. grieved

  1207. he had anger

  1208. he wanted to

  1209. carry out

  1210. vengeance

  1211. on those

  1212. who killed

  1213. his son

  1214. brother Moses

  1215. stood and

  1216. shared with us

  1217. over a long

  1218. process

  1219. the Holy Spirit

  1220. taught him

  1221. to forgive

  1222. those

  1230. God

  1231. with his

  1234. power

  1235. of the

  1236. Holy Spirit

  1237. there is no

  1238. other explanation

  1239. for it

  1240. brother Moses

  1256. this is the

  1257. hour according

  1276. must be ready for

  1277. the bridegroom

  1278. shall return

  1279. for you

  1280. in glory

  1281. oh disciple

  1282. of Jesus

  1283. Christ

  1285. according to

  1286. Romans 13 11

  1287. that the night

  1288. is far gone

  1289. and the day

  1290. is already

  1291. at hand

  1292. salvation

  1293. is nearer

  1294. to us now

  1295. than when we

  1296. first believed

  1297. the hour

  1298. has come

  1299. for you

  1300. to wake

  1301. from your

  1302. sleep

  1303. amen

  1304. let's pray

  1308. oh Lord

  1309. may your Holy

  1310. Spirit cause

  1311. your true

  1312. disciples to

  1313. cast off

  1314. the works

  1315. of darkness

  1316. and put on

  1317. the armor

  1318. of light

  1319. and follow

  1320. you

  1321. King Jesus

  1322. for your glory

  1323. may your kingdom

  1324. come

  1325. and your will
