  1. John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  2. Last week we did about the first half, so 1 through 15.

  3. Today's sermon text begins with verse 16.

  4. Okay, I think all of our kids are assigned in, so I'll pray for you,

  5. and then we'll send you on.

  6. Thank you for the reminder.

  7. All right, let's pray.

  8. Father, thank you for these dear children.

  9. We pray that you please go with them today.

  10. I thank you for James and Michelle and their preparation, Lord.

  11. We pray that you will speak to our children through the power of your word

  12. by the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

  13. Lord, we pray that you will give them hearts to love you.

  14. We pray that you will give them minds to understand you,

  15. and that with their eyes of faith they can see Jesus Christ in his glory.

  16. Please go with these dear children today, Lord. Amen.

  17. All right.

  18. So we're in John chapter 16, and we'll begin reading today at verse 16

    John 16 chapter mention

  19. until the end of the chapter.

  20. As I read this, remember, this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible,

  21. clear, and sufficient word.

  22. It's God's very own word for you, his people.

  23. If you receive it that way, then after I'm done reading,

  24. I'll say this is the word of the Lord, and we'll respond.

  25. Thanks be to God.

  26. John chapter 16, beginning at verse 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  27. Jesus says to his disciples,

  28. A little while, and you will see me no longer.

  29. And again a little while, and you will see me.

  30. So some of his disciples said to one another,

  31. What is this that he says to us?

  32. A little while, and you will not see me.

  33. And again a little while, and you will see me.

  34. And because I am going to the Father.

  35. And so they were saying, What does he mean by a little while?

  36. We do not know what he is talking about.

  37. Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them,

  38. Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant?

  39. And by saying a little while, and you will not see me.

  40. And again a little while, you will see me.

  41. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  42. You will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice.

  43. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.

  44. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come.

  45. But when she has delivered the baby,

  46. she no longer remembers the anguish for joy

  47. that a human being has been born into the world.

  48. So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again.

  49. And your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

  50. In that day you will ask nothing of me.

  51. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  52. Whatever you ask of the Father in my name,

  53. he will give it to you.

  54. Until now you have asked nothing in my name.

  55. Ask, and you will receive,

  56. that your joy may be full.

  57. I have said these things to you in figures of speech.

  58. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech,

  59. but will tell you plainly about the Father.

  60. In that day you will ask in my name,

  61. and I will say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf,

  62. for the Father himself loves you,

  63. because you have loved me,

  64. and have believed that I came from the Father.

  65. I came from the Father,

  66. and I have come into the world,

  67. and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.

  68. His disciples said,

  69. Ah, now you are speaking plainly to us,

  70. not using figurative speech.

  71. Now we know that you know all things,

  72. and do not need anyone to question you.

  73. This is why we believe that you came from God.

  74. Jesus answered them,

  75. Do you now believe?

  76. Behold, the hour is coming.

  77. Indeed, it has come,

  78. when you will be scattered,

  79. each to his own home,

  80. and will leave me alone.

  81. Yet I am not alone,

  82. for the Father is with me.

  83. I have said these things to you,

  84. that in me you may have peace.

  85. In the world you will have tribulation,

  86. but take heart,

  87. I have overcome the world.

  88. And this is the word of the Lord.

  89. Thanks be to God.

  90. Thanks be to God indeed.

  91. You may be seated.

  92. The Bible tells us that

  93. the grass withers and the flower fades,

  94. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  95. Let's pray.

  96. Father, your word is waiting,

  97. because your word carries your glory.

  98. We need your Holy Spirit

  99. to minister your word to us, Lord.

  100. On our own, we don't understand.

  101. We don't understand your glory.

  102. We're like the disciples, Lord.

  103. Left to ourselves, we would be scattered.

  104. Apart from you, we could do nothing.

  105. But we praise you, Lord,

  106. that you have revealed yourself to us

  107. through all of Scripture,

  108. through Jesus Christ,

  109. and you've opened our eyes of faith

  110. by the power of the Holy Spirit

  111. to behold God.

  112. We pray that you will do just that this morning, Lord,

  113. in a powerful way.

  114. We pray, Lord, that your word

  115. will minister to each soul

  116. that you brought here this morning

  117. by your providence,

  118. that you will have your way in our lives,

  119. we pray.

  120. Amen.

  121. Amen.

  122. Beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  123. my prayer for you this week

  124. has simply been that

  125. you would let your heart

  126. truly rejoice

  127. in the promises of Jesus Christ.

  128. Let your heart rejoice

  129. at the promises of Christ.

  130. In this passage,

  131. we have the final words of Jesus

  132. before he marches to the cross.

  133. John 17,

  134. he's not addressing his disciples any longer,

  135. he's praying.

  136. He's praying that the Father will help him.

  137. And so these are the final words.

  138. And before he finishes his work on the cross,

  139. before he takes on the glorified,

  140. resurrected body,

  141. this is his last goodbye.

  142. A final goodbye

  143. keeps a room in the heart forever,

  144. doesn't it?

  145. You have detailed memories

  146. of a last goodbye you've had to say.

  147. And in his last words to his disciples,

  148. what's on the heart of Jesus is the Father.

  149. He knows they will be scattered.

  150. And yet,

  151. he gives them these glorious promises

  152. because he knows

  153. the love of the Father.

  154. This theme reminds me of

  155. a missionary I read about

  156. in the 1800s

  157. named John Payton.

  158. He was born in Scotland,

  159. and he heard of Scottish explorers

  160. discovering these islands

  161. off the coast of New Zealand

  162. and Australia.

  163. Stories came back

  164. of extreme violence and danger,

  165. men who had been cannibalized

  166. and offered as sacrifices.

  167. And the Lord stirred in the heart

  168. of this young man

  169. to go as a missionary

  170. for 40 years

  171. to this pagan people group.

  172. He wrote years later

  173. as an old man

  174. in his autobiography

  175. of that last goodbye

  176. he had to say

  177. to his Christian father.

  178. His father in Scotland

  179. loved the Lord,

  180. and he's sending off

  181. his young son now to college.

  182. They had to walk

  183. for about 40 miles together

  184. to the train stop.

  185. Hear these words

  186. from his autobiography.

  187. For the last half mile

  188. we walked on together

  189. in almost unbroken silence.

  190. His tears,

  191. that's John referring

  192. to his dad,

  193. his tears fell fast

  194. when our eyes met.

  195. His lips kept moving

  196. in silent prayers for me,

  197. my father,

  198. as was often his custom,

  199. hat in hand.

  200. See, he would take

  201. his hat off to pray.

  202. We halted on reaching

  203. the appointed parting place,

  204. and he grasped my hand

  205. firmly for a moment

  206. in silence.

  207. And then he said solemnly,

  208. God bless you,

  209. my son.

  210. Why are goodbyes so hard?

  211. Especially if you know

  212. it's your final goodbye.

  213. The senses are heightened.

  214. You want to capture

  215. every detail of that moment.

  216. A final goodbye

  217. keeps a room

  218. in the heart forever.

  219. And so here we have

  220. in our epistle

  221. this letter from John

  222. retelling these moments

  223. as an old man now

  224. writing this

  225. to comfort the churches.

  226. Think of the love of Christ

  227. in these final words

  228. to his disciples.

  229. In verse 22,

  230. Jesus says,

  231. Disciples,

  232. you have sorrow now,

  233. but your hearts

  234. will rejoice.

  235. rejoice.

  236. Jesus says,

  237. Disciples,

  238. I'm going away,

  239. but I will see you again,

  240. and no one

  241. will take your joy

  242. from you.

  243. Just as you would

  244. hold on to the memories

  245. of a final goodbye

  246. and find comfort

  247. in visiting those memories,

  248. my encouragement

  249. to you today

  250. is to hold on

  251. to these promises,

  252. these final words

  253. of Jesus Christ.

  254. Hear the love

  255. from the Father

  256. flowing through him

  257. to you today.

  258. Let your heart

  259. rejoice

  260. at Christ's promises.

  261. The first one is this.

  262. Christ promises

  263. that his disciples

  264. will see him.

  265. Christ promises

  266. that you,

  267. his disciple,

  268. will see Jesus.

  269. Let your heart

  270. rejoice at that.

  271. Look at verse 16.

  272. Jesus tells his disciples,

  273. a little while,

  274. and you will see me

  275. no longer,

  276. and again a little while,

  277. and you will see me.

  278. It's not the first time

  279. Jesus gave this message.

  280. Earlier in John chapter 7,

    John 7:20

  281. verse 20,

  282. do you remember that scene

  283. where it's the treasury,

  284. where those horn shapes,

  285. where people put money in,

  286. and right across that hallway,

  287. the Pharisees could hear him

  288. preaching and teaching,

  289. and what was it

  290. that Jesus said?

  291. He said,

  292. I am going away.

  293. Where I am going,

  294. you cannot come.

  295. You will seek me,

  296. but will not find me.

  297. And then Jesus proclaimed,

  298. so all in the temple

  299. would hear,

  300. unless you believe

  301. that I am he,

  302. you will die

  303. in your sins.

  304. That's what he proclaimed

  305. in the temple

  306. for all the world

  307. to hear.

  308. Unless you believe,

  309. you will die

  310. in your sins.

  311. But now to his disciples,

  312. even though they will

  313. be scattered,

  314. and without the Holy Spirit,

  315. they would never

  316. follow Christ loyally.

  317. Jesus says,

  318. you will see me.

  319. Pastor John Gill commented,

  320. nothing touches believers

  321. to the quick

  322. and gives them

  323. more uneasiness

  324. than when Christ

  325. is out of sight.

  326. There is none like him

  327. in their esteem

  328. in heaven and on earth.

  329. Oh, disciples

  330. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  331. we sing this,

  332. turn your eyes

  333. upon Jesus.

  334. Turn your eyes

  335. to the morning

  336. and see Christ

  337. the lion awake.

  338. What a glorious dawn.

  339. Fear of death

  340. is gone.

  341. Oh, Jesus,

  342. we turn our eyes

  343. to you

  344. because there's not

  345. a more terrible thought

  346. than to never

  347. see Jesus again.

  348. And now we see him

  349. with eyes of faith.

  350. One day he promises,

  351. my disciples,

  352. you will see me.

  353. Let that stir

  354. your heart with joy.

  355. See, this is the promise

  356. of God to everyone

  357. who has ever believed

  358. through all of human history.

  359. One of the most ancient books

  360. of the whole Bible

  361. is Job.

  362. And this was the promise

  363. God gave Job.

  364. In Job 19.25,

  365. he could pray,

  366. I know that my Redeemer lives

  367. and at the last

  368. he will stand

  369. upon the earth.

  370. And after my skin

  371. has been thus destroyed,

  372. yet in my flesh

  373. I will see God.

  374. That was the hope

  375. that moved Job

  376. to rejoicing

  377. when everything around him

  378. was perishing away.

  379. Let your heart rejoice

  380. at Christ's promises today.

  381. And Christ promises,

  382. believer,

  383. that his disciples

  384. will see him.

  385. Christ also promises

  386. that he will turn

  387. your sorrow

  388. into joy.

  389. Jesus Christ will turn

  390. your sorrow

  391. into joy.

  392. That's what he promises

  393. in verse 20.

  394. Look at that.

  395. In verse 20,

  396. Jesus says,

  397. Amen,

  398. Amen,

  399. or truly,

  400. truly,

  401. I say to you,

  402. you will weep

  403. and lament

  404. while the world rejoices.

  405. You will be sorrowful,

  406. but listen to this promise.

  407. Your sorrow

  408. will turn

  409. into joy.

  410. See,

  411. the disciples,

  412. they're confused

  413. and they do feel

  414. this deep sorrow.

  415. They feel the weightiness

  416. of this moment

  417. and their deep sorrow

  418. gets deeper.

  419. We're reminded again

  420. of that scene

  421. in Narnia

  422. when those wicked beasts

  423. are mocking

  424. and jeering

  425. and cheering

  426. as Aslan,

  427. the great mighty lion,

  428. marches to the stone table

  429. of his death.

  430. The disciples

  431. are going to see

  432. that happen

  433. to their Lord.

  434. They will see Jesus

  435. be bound up,

  436. falsely accused,

  437. mocked,

  438. scourged.

  439. They will see

  440. the innocent,

  441. righteous man

  442. bleeding for them,

  443. then being spat upon

  444. and publicly humiliated.

  445. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  446. as someone put it,

  447. the one on whom

  448. their souls hope,

  449. the one who their hearts

  450. love,

  451. the one who is

  452. the very life

  453. of their souls.

  454. His gracious presence

  455. is the only source

  456. of life to disciples.

  457. What this means is

  458. as they watch Jesus

  459. be carried away

  460. to his death,

  461. it means death

  462. for them.

  463. all of their hopes,

  464. all of their peace

  465. is being crushed.

  466. And now Jesus promises

  467. and the Spirit

  468. reminds them

  469. the very thing

  470. that caused you

  471. the deepest sorrow,

  472. the deepest anguish

  473. you will feel,

  474. that very thing

  475. will become

  476. the source

  477. and the foundation

  478. of your joy.

  479. joy.

  480. Jesus says,

  481. your sorrow

  482. will turn

  483. into joy.

  484. What is it

  485. that becomes joy?

  486. It's that very thing,

  487. it's the sorrow.

  488. And the word there,

  489. the verb,

  490. to turn into,

  491. it means to generate,

  492. to give birth,

  493. to be made into.

  494. And the tense

  495. is passive.

  496. Like a mother

  497. giving birth,

  498. the labor pains,

  499. your anguish

  500. is intense,

  501. but Jesus says

  502. that same sorrow,

  503. that same source

  504. of pain,

  505. it will pass quickly.

  506. Your very suffering

  507. will give birth

  508. to rejoicing.

  509. You don't need

  510. to go out

  511. and work for this,

  512. disciples,

  513. this will happen

  514. to you.

  515. I will work this out

  516. in your life.

  517. Think of that mother.

  518. Many here

  519. have gone through this.

  520. There's the pain

  521. in the back,

  522. the changes to the body,

  523. the weight

  524. in the stomach

  525. carrying a child,

  526. the fear,

  527. the uncertainty.

  528. The Lord Jesus

  529. was carrying

  530. a weight here.

  531. He was carrying

  532. a spiritual heaviness.

  533. He was marching

  534. to suffer.

  535. But He did it

  536. for the joy

  537. set before Him.

  538. Just like a mother

  539. joyfully endures

  540. all of that

  541. in her own body.

  542. That's what Jesus

  543. was enduring spiritually.

  544. He was looking forward

  545. to that joy

  546. this would produce

  547. in His disciples.

  548. There's no other way

  549. for them to have joy

  550. than for Christ

  551. to carry that load

  552. for them.

  553. The disciples

  554. could see this

  555. happen before their eyes

  556. and the Spirit

  557. teaching them

  558. what this means.

  559. And for us,

  560. looking back

  561. on that work

  562. of Christ

  563. on our behalf,

  564. we can sing

  565. like the hymn

  566. says so well.

  567. When Satan

  568. tempts me

  569. to despair

  570. and tells me

  571. of the guilt

  572. within,

  573. upward I look

  574. and see Him

  575. there

  576. who made an end

  577. to all

  578. my sin.

  579. It's because

  580. the sinless Savior

  581. died.

  582. My sinful soul

  583. is counted free

  584. for God

  585. the just

  586. has satisfied

  587. to look on

  588. Him

  589. and pardon me.

  590. Praise God

  591. for His work.

  592. I don't know

  593. the details

  594. of what each one

  595. of you is carrying

  596. this morning,

  597. but if you picture

  598. your sorrow

  599. like heavy clay

  600. packed inside

  601. of a big backpack

  602. you're carrying

  603. the sorrow around.

  604. The promise

  605. that Jesus gives here

  606. is that He will

  607. turn that sorrow

  608. on your back,

  609. on your shoulders.

  610. He will turn that

  611. into joy.

  612. It's like

  613. that heaviness

  614. on your load,

  615. He's going to make

  616. that very thing

  617. become feathery wings.

  618. You're going to

  619. soar with Him.

  620. He doesn't waste

  621. your pain,

  622. He transforms it.

  623. That's what He's

  624. telling them.

  625. How does He do this?

  626. How do I get that?

  627. How do I get out

  628. of this slump

  629. and this anguish

  630. and sorrow

  631. and experience that?

  632. It's on our knees

  633. with our Bible open.

  634. The Holy Spirit

  635. ministers the Word

  636. of God to us.

  637. The thing is,

  638. our flesh,

  639. our remaining sin in us,

  640. we don't want to get

  641. on our knees

  642. with our Bible open.

  643. We usually don't

  644. choose that,

  645. do we?

  646. That's why our very sorrow,

  647. the very thing

  648. that we hate,

  649. that feels like

  650. this heavy anguish,

  651. that is what puts us

  652. on our knees

  653. before the Lord.

  654. That's why J.C. Ryle

  655. could say,

  656. no commentary

  657. opens up the Bible

  658. so much as sickness

  659. and sorrow.

  660. Praise God

  661. for the sorrow

  662. if it drives you down

  663. before the cross

  664. of Jesus

  665. to receive

  666. from Him again.

  667. Let your heart rejoice

  668. at this promise.

  669. He will turn

  670. your sorrow

  671. into joy.

  672. Christ also promises

  673. that He will return

  674. to reveal

  675. the Father.

  676. He promises

  677. that He will return

  678. to reveal

  679. the Father

  680. to you.

  681. He promises this

  682. in verses 22

  683. and 25.

  684. Look at 22.

  685. Jesus says

  686. to the disciples,

  687. so also,

  688. you have sorrow now,

  689. but I will see you again.

  690. And your hearts

  691. will rejoice

  692. and no one

  693. can take your joy

  694. from you.

  695. He says,

  696. when you see me,

  697. your hearts

  698. will rejoice.

  699. Why is it that

  700. no one can take

  701. your joy from you?

  702. It's because

  703. the source of your joy

  704. is Jesus Christ.

  705. And no one can take

  706. you from Jesus Christ.

  707. Look at what He says

  708. in verse 25.

  709. He says,

  710. the hour is coming

  711. when I will tell you

  712. plainly

  713. about the Father.

  714. Disciple,

  715. you're going to see

  716. Jesus

  717. and you will rejoice.

  718. And Jesus says,

  719. it doesn't stop

  720. with me.

  721. Look at my Father.

  722. I reveal

  723. the love of God

  724. Himself

  725. to you,

  726. disciple.

  727. We sing,

  728. come behold

  729. this wondrous mystery.

  730. It was a mystery

  731. to the disciples.

  732. They don't understand

  733. and Christ sees them

  734. trying to figure it out

  735. and even when

  736. He tells them this,

  737. they think they get it,

  738. they act like they do,

  739. and He says,

  740. you're going to be scattered.

  741. It's a wondrous mystery.

  742. And if God has opened

  743. your eyes to behold

  744. the gospel,

  745. let that be assurance

  746. for you.

  747. You would not be able

  748. to believe the gospel

  749. unless the Holy Spirit

  750. had regenerated you.

  751. That's the source

  752. of your assurance.

  753. I see this wondrous

  754. mystery of Christ.

  755. I can sing like the hymn,

  756. come behold

  757. the wondrous mystery.

  758. See the price

  759. of our redemption.

  760. See the Father's plan

  761. unfold,

  762. bringing many sons

  763. to glory,

  764. grace unmeasured,

  765. love untold.

  766. Jesus says,

  767. your hearts

  768. will rejoice

  769. in verse 22.

  770. Your hearts

  771. will rejoice.

  772. The word rejoice

  773. is used,

  774. it's to hail

  775. someone in greeting.

  776. It's at the sight

  777. of me,

  778. Jesus says.

  779. Your heart

  780. will signal to you

  781. to be glad

  782. and to delight in me.

  783. This promise

  784. is not just

  785. for the disciples

  786. referring to

  787. his resurrection

  788. along with 500

  789. other witnesses.

  790. They see

  791. the risen Christ.

  792. They see him

  793. in his glorified body.

  794. But it doesn't

  795. stop with them.

  796. You will see

  797. Jesus.

  798. You will see

  799. Jesus.

  800. He is coming again.

  801. And he will show you

  802. the Father.

  803. Thomas Aquinas,

  804. a great synthesizer

  805. of the early church

  806. all the way up

  807. right before the Reformation.

  808. He said,

  809. there is a desire

  810. in the human soul

  811. to know God.

  812. And that desire

  813. to know God

  814. can only be satisfied

  815. by the fullness

  816. of the beatific vision.

  817. The beatific vision,

  818. it's a theological term

  819. for what mere mortals

  820. like us

  821. will get to experience

  822. one day

  823. in glory.

  824. Not by faith,

  825. but by sight

  826. to behold God

  827. and to see

  828. his glory.

  829. That's what Jesus

  830. is so excited

  831. for his disciples

  832. to behold

  833. and to know.

  834. He knows the glory

  835. of his Father.

  836. They're going to scatter,

  837. but his Father

  838. is with him.

  839. The Father loves him.

  840. The Father loves

  841. those he has given

  842. to him.

  843. And he can't wait

  844. for them

  845. to behold

  846. the glory

  847. of his Father.

  848. That's why

  849. he took on flesh.

  850. This is his mission.

  851. One day,

  852. don't you look forward

  853. to seeing the face

  854. of Christ?

  855. To seeing God

  856. in all of his glory?

  857. He promises

  858. this will happen.

  859. In 1 Corinthians 13,

  860. he says,

  861. you will see God

  862. face to face.

  863. Not just now

  864. like through a dim glass.

  865. You will see God

  866. face to face.

  867. face.

  868. Psalm 17,

    Psalms 17:15

  869. verse 15,

  870. looks forward

  871. to that promise.

  872. I shall be satisfied

  873. when I awaken

  874. thy likeness.

  875. See, I go to bed,

  876. but when I awake,

  877. I die,

  878. my body is buried,

  879. but my soul

  880. is alive.

  881. And I will see

  882. thy likeness.

  883. I shall behold

  884. thy face

  885. in righteousness.

  886. Let your heart

  887. rejoice

  888. rejoice

  889. at the promises

  890. of Christ.

  891. Psalm 147

  892. was put to music,

  893. to lyric,

  894. and it goes like this.

  895. Millions of years

  896. my wondering eyes

  897. shall o'er

  898. thy beauties rove

  899. in endless ages

  900. I'll adore

  901. the glories

  902. of thy love.

  903. Oh, we long

  904. for that day.

  905. Christ promises

  906. he will return

  907. to reveal

  908. the Father

  909. to you,

  910. disciple.

  911. Christ promises

  912. that the Father

  913. himself

  914. loves you.

  915. The Father

  916. himself

  917. loves you.

  918. That's what

  919. Christ promises

  920. to you.

  921. Maybe there are

  922. some here today

  923. that simple truth,

  924. you need to not

  925. just hear it

  926. and understand

  927. in your mind

  928. for someone else.

  929. You need to let

  930. your heart rejoice

  931. at those words

  932. from Jesus.

  933. Jesus.

  934. In verse 26,

  935. look at what

  936. he says.

  937. In that day

  938. you will ask

  939. in my name

  940. and I do not

  941. say that you

  942. will ask

  943. the Father,

  944. that I will ask

  945. a Father

  946. on your behalf.

  947. Look at what

  948. he says

  949. in verse 27.

  950. The Father

  951. himself

  952. loves

  953. you.

  954. The Father

  955. himself

  956. loves

  957. you

  958. because

  959. you have

  960. loved me

  961. and believe

  962. that I

  963. came from

  964. God.

  965. Jesus says,

  966. I will return

  967. for you.

  968. I will see

  969. you again,

  970. disciples.

  971. I am the

  972. source of

  973. your joy

  974. and none

  975. can take

  976. me away

  977. from you.

  978. From that

  979. day on,

  980. I will be

  981. with you,

  982. my people,

  983. by the power

  984. of the Holy

  985. Spirit.

  986. You will

  987. abide in me

  988. and you

  989. will be

  990. able to

  991. approach

  992. the Father

  993. directly

  994. in my

  995. name.

  996. No one

  997. had ever

  998. prayed in

  999. Jesus'

  1000. name,

  1001. amen,

  1002. before.

  1003. But he

  1004. teaches us

  1005. to pray

  1006. directly to

  1007. his Father.

  1008. Why?

  1009. Because the

  1010. Father himself

  1011. loves you.

  1012. Now you

  1013. don't do it

  1014. by your own

  1015. merits.

  1016. You pray

  1017. in the

  1018. name of

  1019. Jesus Christ.

  1020. But he

  1021. wants you

  1022. to have

  1023. full access

  1024. to the

  1025. Father

  1026. for yourself.

  1027. he wants

  1028. you to

  1029. see the

  1030. Father's

  1031. love for

  1032. you.

  1033. He wants

  1034. you to

  1035. experience

  1036. the

  1037. Father's

  1038. true love

  1039. for you.

  1040. The

  1041. Father

  1042. himself

  1043. loves

  1044. you.

  1045. If you

  1046. love me

  1047. and receive

  1048. me as

  1049. a gift

  1050. from the

  1051. Father

  1052. to save

  1053. you,

  1054. you can

  1055. know with

  1056. assurance

  1057. that you

  1058. belong to

  1059. my Father.

  1060. You can

  1061. pray our

  1062. Father with

  1063. me.

  1064. See how

  1065. patient the

  1066. Father is?

  1067. We sing

  1068. of his

  1069. patience.

  1070. What patience

  1071. would wait

  1072. as we

  1073. constantly

  1074. roam.

  1075. What

  1076. Father so

  1077. tender is

  1078. calling us

  1079. home.

  1080. He welcomes

  1081. the weakest,

  1082. the vilest,

  1083. the poor.

  1084. Our sins,

  1085. they are

  1086. many.

  1087. His mercy

  1088. is more.

  1089. more.

  1090. That's

  1091. what Christ

  1092. wants you

  1093. to know

  1094. and to

  1095. trust.

  1096. It's that

  1097. same love

  1098. in which the

  1099. Father has

  1100. sent his

  1101. Son to

  1102. save you.

  1103. That's the

  1104. love of the

  1105. Father through

  1106. Jesus Christ

  1107. for you who

  1108. believe today.

  1109. God

  1110. will

  1111. take you

  1112. back to

  1113. that scene

  1114. of the

  1115. Father walking

  1116. with his

  1117. son in

  1118. Scotland,

  1119. sending him

  1120. off to

  1121. go to

  1122. mission

  1123. school.

  1124. He wrote

  1125. in his

  1126. autobiography,

  1127. unable to

  1128. say more,

  1129. my father

  1130. kept praying

  1131. for me as

  1132. I walked.

  1133. For one

  1134. final time,

  1135. we embraced

  1136. and then I

  1137. parted.

  1138. I ran

  1139. off as fast

  1140. as I could

  1141. and went

  1142. about to

  1143. turn a

  1144. corner in

  1145. the road

  1146. where we

  1147. would lose

  1148. sight of

  1149. each other.

  1150. I looked

  1151. back one

  1152. last time

  1153. and saw

  1154. him standing

  1155. there with

  1156. his head

  1157. still uncovered

  1158. where I

  1159. had left

  1160. him,

  1161. gazing

  1162. after me.

  1163. But my

  1164. heart was

  1165. too full

  1166. and sore

  1167. to carry

  1168. me further

  1169. so I

  1170. darted

  1171. into the

  1172. side of

  1173. the road

  1174. and wept

  1175. for a

  1176. time.

  1177. I caught

  1178. a glimpse

  1179. of my

  1180. father

  1181. climbing the

  1182. dike

  1183. and looking

  1184. out for

  1185. me.

  1186. He did

  1187. not see

  1188. me and

  1189. after he

  1190. gazed

  1191. eagerly in

  1192. my direction

  1193. for a

  1194. while he

  1195. got down

  1196. and he

  1197. set his

  1198. face toward

  1199. home and

  1200. began to

  1201. return,

  1202. his head

  1203. still uncovered

  1204. and his

  1205. heart I

  1206. felt for

  1207. sure still

  1208. rising in

  1209. prayers for

  1210. me.

  1211. I'm so

  1212. moved by

  1213. that because

  1214. I believe

  1215. that's a

  1216. picture of

  1217. the loving

  1218. father and

  1219. his son

  1220. Jesus Christ

  1221. and where

  1222. is this

  1223. young man

  1224. on a

  1225. mission going?

  1226. he's going

  1227. to the

  1228. most dangerous

  1229. people he

  1230. had ever

  1231. heard of.

  1232. Why?

  1233. Because of

  1234. the love

  1235. of God

  1236. through his

  1237. father,

  1238. through him

  1239. for the

  1240. world.

  1241. The father

  1242. himself loves

  1243. you.

  1244. Let your

  1245. heart rejoice

  1246. at Christ's

  1247. promises.

  1248. Christ promises

  1249. that he

  1250. has overcome

  1251. the world.

  1252. Christ promises

  1253. that he

  1254. has overcome

  1255. the world.

  1256. Look at

  1257. verse 33,

  1258. the last

  1259. verse of

  1260. our sermon

  1261. text.

  1262. Jesus tells

  1263. the disciples,

  1264. I have said

  1265. these things

  1266. to you that

  1267. in me you

  1268. may have

  1269. peace.

  1270. In this

  1271. world you

  1272. will have

  1273. tribulation.

  1274. Take

  1275. heart.

  1276. I have

  1277. overcome

  1278. the world.

  1279. I have

  1280. overcome the

  1281. world.

  1282. Christ

  1283. overcame

  1284. the world

  1285. through his

  1286. submission.

  1287. Christ

  1288. conquered

  1289. through

  1290. sacrifice.

  1291. John

  1292. Calvin's

  1293. commentary

  1294. was helpful.

  1295. He said,

  1296. you will

  1297. soon see

  1298. me,

  1299. disciples,

  1300. for my

  1301. death is

  1302. not a

  1303. destruction

  1304. to separate

  1305. me from

  1306. you.

  1307. My death

  1308. and resurrection

  1309. are the

  1310. necessary

  1311. passage

  1312. into the

  1313. heavenly

  1314. glory

  1315. from which

  1316. my divine

  1317. power

  1318. will diffuse

  1319. itself

  1320. to you.

  1321. This

  1322. is why

  1323. you can

  1324. have peace

  1325. in this

  1326. world.

  1327. Jesus

  1328. says,

  1329. now you

  1330. have

  1331. tribulation.

  1332. Do you

  1333. have

  1334. tribulation

  1335. now?

  1336. It's

  1337. okay to

  1338. say amen

  1339. to that.

  1340. Soon

  1341. you will

  1342. have peace.

  1343. Jesus

  1344. promises.

  1345. Now

  1346. you have

  1347. a godly

  1348. grief.

  1349. Do you

  1350. feel that?

  1351. soon

  1352. you have

  1353. relief.

  1354. If the

  1355. Lord causes

  1356. you to

  1357. repent

  1358. today,

  1359. it's

  1360. because

  1361. soon

  1362. your

  1363. full

  1364. salvation

  1365. will be

  1366. made

  1367. real.

  1368. 2 Corinthians

  1369. 7.10

  1370. says,

  1371. godly grief

  1372. produces a

  1373. repentance

  1374. that leads

  1375. to salvation.

  1376. And blessed

  1377. are those

  1378. who mourn,

  1379. Jesus preached,

  1380. for they

  1381. shall be

  1382. comforted.

  1383. that's

  1384. how Christ

  1385. conquered

  1386. the world.

  1387. He has

  1388. overcome

  1389. the world.

  1390. The hymn

  1391. says it

  1392. so well.

  1393. He the

  1394. champion

  1395. in the

  1396. battle.

  1397. He can

  1398. say,

  1399. where,

  1400. oh death,

  1401. is now

  1402. thy sting?

  1403. In

  1404. our place

  1405. he bled

  1406. and conquered.

  1407. Crown

  1408. him Lord

  1409. of majesty.

  1410. His

  1411. shall be

  1412. the throne

  1413. forever

  1414. and we

  1415. shall

  1416. heir his

  1417. people be.

  1418. Isaiah

  1419. 33.17

  1420. promises,

  1421. your eyes

  1422. will behold

  1423. the king

  1424. in his

  1425. beauty

  1426. and his

  1427. people will

  1428. see a

  1429. land that

  1430. stretches

  1431. afar.

  1432. Christ

  1433. promises that

  1434. he has

  1435. overcome

  1436. the world.

  1437. He is

  1438. that stone

  1439. cut

  1440. not by

  1441. human hands

  1442. that has

  1443. established

  1444. the kingdom

  1445. that the

  1446. mountain

  1447. rises up

  1448. and it

  1449. fills

  1450. the earth

  1451. and his

  1452. kingdom

  1453. has

  1454. dominion

  1455. already

  1456. from heaven.

  1457. One day

  1458. his

  1459. dominion,

  1460. the true

  1461. kingdom

  1462. of heaven

  1463. will

  1464. descend

  1465. and will

  1466. have

  1467. the new

  1468. heavens

  1469. and the

  1470. new

  1471. earth.

  1472. Keep

  1473. your eyes

  1474. set

  1475. on that

  1476. glorious

  1477. day.

  1478. Love

  1479. for Christ

  1480. is the

  1481. fuel

  1482. of global

  1483. missions.

  1484. That's my

  1485. purpose in

  1486. bringing in

  1487. John

  1488. Payton.

  1489. I want

  1490. to make

  1491. sure that

  1492. we understand

  1493. why we're

  1494. having a

  1495. focus next

  1496. week from

  1497. one of

  1498. our

  1499. missionaries

  1500. on every

  1501. tribe,

  1502. people,

  1503. and tongue.

  1504. It's because

  1505. it's this

  1506. love for

  1507. Christ that

  1508. is the

  1509. only fuel

  1510. for global

  1511. missions.

  1512. If you

  1513. see Christ

  1514. in his

  1515. glory,

  1516. you believe

  1517. his spiritual

  1518. kingdom is

  1519. real now,

  1520. then you

  1521. join him

  1522. in praying

  1523. for his

  1524. love and

  1525. his kingdom

  1526. to go

  1527. as far

  1528. as the

  1529. eye can

  1530. imagine.

  1531. In his

  1532. autobiography,

  1533. John

  1534. Payton

  1535. reflects on

  1536. times where

  1537. their dad

  1538. would gather

  1539. the family

  1540. around by

  1541. the fire

  1542. and they

  1543. would get

  1544. down and

  1545. pray.

  1546. He described

  1547. his father's

  1548. discipling him

  1549. as a young

  1550. boy that way.

  1551. He says,

  1552. how much my

  1553. father's prayers

  1554. impressed on

  1555. me as a

  1556. child,

  1557. I can never

  1558. explain,

  1559. nor could any

  1560. stranger

  1561. understand.

  1562. When on

  1563. his knees

  1564. and all of

  1565. us kneeling

  1566. around him

  1567. in family

  1568. worship,

  1569. he poured

  1570. out his

  1571. soul,

  1572. his whole

  1573. soul with

  1574. tears for

  1575. the conversion

  1576. of the lost

  1577. nations of

  1578. the world

  1579. to serve

  1580. Jesus.

  1581. And we

  1582. all felt

  1583. as if in

  1584. the presence

  1585. of the

  1586. living Savior

  1587. and learned

  1588. to know

  1589. and love

  1590. Jesus Christ

  1591. as our

  1592. divine

  1593. friend.

  1594. When we

  1595. pray for

  1596. God's kingdom

  1597. to come

  1598. and his

  1599. will to be

  1600. done,

  1601. the father

  1602. is so

  1603. pleased by

  1604. that,

  1605. that his

  1606. spirit draws

  1607. you into

  1608. the very

  1609. presence

  1610. of Jesus

  1611. from his

  1612. throne

  1613. and praying

  1614. that his

  1615. kingdom will

  1616. go forth

  1617. till every

  1618. nation

  1619. hears.

  1620. This is only

  1621. possible because

  1622. of this

  1623. promise.

  1624. Jesus says,

  1625. I have

  1626. overcome

  1627. the world.

  1628. Because Jesus

  1629. overcame the

  1630. world,

  1631. his disciples

  1632. do have

  1633. peace

  1634. inside of

  1635. that tribulation.

  1636. salvation.

  1637. Well,

  1638. once John

  1639. Payton

  1640. got to

  1641. those

  1642. islands,

  1643. it was

  1644. described as

  1645. a pagan

  1646. worship

  1647. enslaved to

  1648. really

  1649. worshiping

  1650. demons.

  1651. The locals

  1652. worshipped and

  1653. were knowingly

  1654. enslaved to

  1655. a, quote,

  1656. spirit of

  1657. evil on

  1658. these islands.

  1659. They were

  1660. trapped as a

  1661. society in a

  1662. cycle of

  1663. sacrifice to

  1664. an invisible

  1665. world channeled

  1666. through idols

  1667. made of

  1668. stone.

  1669. The culture

  1670. had valued

  1671. deception and

  1672. taboos and

  1673. practiced arson,

  1674. that's setting

  1675. things on fire

  1676. on purpose,

  1677. witchcraft,

  1678. tribal wars,

  1679. which perpetuate

  1680. the cycle of

  1681. revenge.

  1682. And when they

  1683. would capture

  1684. their enemies,

  1685. they would

  1686. practice ritual

  1687. human sacrifice

  1688. followed by

  1689. cannibalism.

  1690. When he got

  1691. to this

  1692. island, the

  1693. Lord's gospel

  1694. went forth

  1695. and many

  1696. believed a

  1697. church was

  1698. eventually planted

  1699. on a

  1700. neighboring

  1701. island and

  1702. that they

  1703. came back as

  1704. missionaries to

  1705. this most

  1706. violent island.

  1707. And as the

  1708. Lord brought

  1709. sons and

  1710. daughters into

  1711. the kingdom,

  1712. the persecution

  1713. against the

  1714. church got

  1715. even stronger.

  1716. John Payton

  1717. had to say

  1718. goodbye to

  1719. one of his

  1720. early converts.

  1721. words, a

  1722. final goodbye

  1723. keeps a room

  1724. in your heart

  1725. forever.

  1726. And he would

  1727. never forget

  1728. that final

  1729. goodbye to

  1730. this first

  1731. Christian

  1732. convert who

  1733. had to give

  1734. up their

  1735. life.

  1736. He wrote in

  1737. his autobiography

  1738. that the first

  1739. martyr was a

  1740. native who

  1741. with his dying

  1742. breath at the

  1743. hands of these

  1744. persecutors echoed

  1745. the words of

  1746. Jesus Christ

  1747. himself.

  1748. For the sake

  1749. of Jesus,

  1750. forgive them

  1751. for they know

  1752. not what they

  1753. are doing.

  1754. Take not away

  1755. Lord, thy

  1756. worship from

  1757. this dark

  1758. island.

  1759. Because Christ

  1760. overcame the

  1761. world, his

  1762. disciples have

  1763. peace in the

  1764. midst of

  1765. tribulation.

  1766. Christ promises

  1767. to you,

  1768. disciple, he

  1769. has overcome

  1770. the world.

  1771. Let your

  1772. heart rejoice

  1773. at Christ's

  1774. promises today.

  1775. Let's pray.

  1776. From Romans

  1777. 8.

  1778. Oh Lord, we

  1779. know that the

  1780. whole creation

  1781. has been groaning

  1782. together in the

  1783. pains of childbirth

  1784. until now.

  1785. And not only

  1786. the creation,

  1787. but we

  1788. ourselves,

  1789. who have the

  1790. first fruits of

  1791. the spirit,

  1792. we groan

  1793. inwardly as

  1794. we wait eagerly

  1795. for adoption

  1796. as sons,

  1797. the redemption

  1798. of our bodies.

  1799. 2 Corinthians 5.

  1800. So we are

  1801. always of good

  1802. courage.

  1803. We know that

  1804. while we are

  1805. at home in the

  1806. body, we are

  1807. away from the

  1808. Lord.

  1809. For we walk

  1810. by faith,

  1811. not by sight.

  1812. Yes, we are

  1813. of good courage

  1814. and we would

  1815. rather be away

  1816. from the body.

  1817. And at home

  1818. with you,

  1819. Lord.

  1820. Yet as long

  1821. as you have

  1822. us here,

  1823. Father,

  1824. to live as

  1825. Christ,

  1826. please come

  1827. quickly,

  1828. Lord Jesus,

  1829. and help us

  1830. to trust in

  1831. you,

  1832. stir our hearts

  1833. up with hope

  1834. and a deep

  1835. rejoicing in

  1836. the midst of

  1837. tribulation.

  1838. We pray for

  1839. your glory in

  1840. our lives,

  1841. in the life of

  1842. this church.

  1843. We pray this

  1844. in Jesus'

  1845. name.

  1846. Amen.

  1847. Amen.

  1848. Amen.

  1849. Amen.

  1850. Amen.

  1851. Amen.

  1852. Amen.

  1853. Amen.
