  1. Jonah chapter 4. There's only four chapters in Jonah and today we're on the last chapter.

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  2. We're preaching through the gospel according to John. We finished all the way through John 16,

  3. but once a month or so we pop back to the Old Testament and we've worked through the book of

  4. Ruth. Now we're working through the book of Jonah. And it's been a delight and it's also amazing to

  5. see the same gospel, the same message throughout all of God's word. So we're going to read all of

  6. Jonah chapter 4 as our sermon text today. We'll really begin one verse before that.

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  7. As I read God's word today and as you follow along, remember this is God's inspired, inerrant,

  8. infallible, clear, and sufficient word. This is God's very own word for you who are his people.

  9. If you receive his word today in that way, then when I'm done with the reading of the word, I'll say

  10. this is the word of the God and we'll respond, thanks be to God.

  11. Jonah chapter 4, but let's start one verse prior. So Jonah chapter 3 verse 10.

Jonah 4 chapter mention Jonah 3:10

  12. When God saw what they did, that's the repentance of the Ninevites, how they turned from their evil way,

  13. God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them and he did not do it.

  14. Jonah 4 verse 1.

    Jonah 4:1

  15. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly and he was angry and he prayed to the Lord and said,

  16. O Lord, is not this what I said when I was in my country?

  17. That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful,

  18. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and relenting from disaster.

  19. Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.

  20. And the Lord said, do you do well to be angry?

  21. Verse 5.

  22. Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east of the city and made a booth for himself there.

  23. He sat under it in the shade till he should see what would become of the city.

  24. Now the Lord God appointed a plant and made it grow up over Jonah that it might be a shade over his head to save him from his discomfort.

  25. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant.

  26. But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the plant so that it withered.

  27. When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind.

  28. And the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint.

  29. And he asked that he might die and said, it is better for me to die than to live.

  30. But God said to Jonah, do you do well to be angry for the plant?

  31. And he said, yes, I do well to be angry, angry enough to die.

  32. And the Lord said, you pity the plant for which you did not labor, nor did you make it grow.

  33. Which came into being in a night and perished in a night.

  34. And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left.

  35. And also much cattle.

  36. This is the word of the Lord.

  37. Thanks be to God.

  38. You may be seated.

  39. The Bible says that the grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  40. Beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, how do you see God?

  41. How do you see God?

  42. As I pray for illumination that the Lord would speak through his word, ponder that question.

  43. How do you see God?

  44. Let's pray.

  45. Oh God, you are the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything.

  46. You are eternal, infinite, and unchangeable in your power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice and truth.

  47. And nothing happens except through you and by your will, as the catechism says.

  48. I pray, Lord, today that by the power of your spirit through the ministry of the word, you will open our eyes to see you, God, for who you truly are.

  49. That you will be glorified in our lives, we pray.

  50. Amen.

  51. Amen.

  52. In the Chronicles of Narnia, Lucy is learning who Aslan is.

  53. Lucy is the little girl.

  54. Aslan is the great lion, the creator, and the king over Narnia and over the whole world.

  55. And Mr. and Mrs. Beaver are the ones who get to introduce Lucy to the idea of who Aslan is.

  56. Lucy is curious, so she asks, is he safe?

  57. The beaver says, of course he isn't safe.

  58. He's wild, you know, not like a tame lion, but he's good.

  59. He's the king, I tell you.

  60. Great literature has two types of characters.

  61. One is called a flat character.

  62. The other is called a round character.

  63. They're set up to be contrasts one with the other.

  64. A flat character can be summed up in one to two sentences.

  65. A flat character has traits that are consistent.

  66. And a flat character is stable and more predictable.

  67. The flat character serves to point a flashlight or a spotlight at a different character.

  68. And that's the round or the complex character.

  69. So with Narnia, you have Lucy who's a flat character.

  70. She's spotlighting Aslan.

  71. Lucy is consistently kind toward her siblings.

  72. Lucy consistently rests, putting her hope in Aslan to come and save them.

  73. But Aslan is not a tame lion, you see.

  74. But he is the king and he's good.

  75. We know from all of scripture that God is unchanging.

  76. All of his attributes are unified in his essence.

  77. But God does not reveal himself in a flat way.

  78. Jonah seems to want a flat God.

  79. The book of Jonah shows us God is so much bigger, Jonah.

  80. God cannot be summed up in one to two sentences, can he?

  81. Many of God's attributes are paradoxical.

  82. And God often surprises you.

  83. How do you see God, dear Christian?

  84. How do you see God?

  85. I believe as we walk through this last chapter of Jonah,

  86. when you see God for who he truly is,

  87. something will happen to you and to me.

  88. As we see God for who he truly is,

  89. the true condition of our heart gets exposed.

  90. This was true for Jonah.

  91. When God shows you who he truly is,

  92. the true condition of your heart is exposed.

  93. When God shows you who he truly is,

  94. the true condition of your heart is exposed.

  95. A couple observations on this.

  96. The Lord revealed to Jonah,

  97. in redemptive history,

  98. these events actually happened in a real city,

  99. a real capital of the Assyrian Empire.

  100. God used those events in redemptive history

  101. to reveal to Jonah who he truly is.

  102. So God acts in history to reveal himself.

  103. So we read in Jonah 4, verse 1,

    Jonah 4:1

  104. it displeased Jonah exceedingly,

  105. and he was very angry.

  106. The verb displeased,

  107. it displeased Jonah exceedingly.

  108. That verb is used in the Bible in connection to the eyes.

  109. One example is Proverbs 15, 3,

  110. the eyes of the Lord are in every place,

  111. keeping watch on the evil and the good.

  112. So you're seeing it,

  113. you're taking it in,

  114. and you're determining,

  115. is this pleasing or not?

  116. We see here two things that Jonah saw

  117. that displeased him greatly.

  118. Number one,

  119. Jonah saw the Ninevites turn

  120. and repent.

  121. Number two,

  122. Jonah saw God show mercy

  123. by withholding punishment.

  124. So what displeased Jonah

  125. is really a reference to chapter 3, verse 10.

  126. Take your eyes there in your Bible.

  127. Jonah 3, 10,

  128. when God saw what the Ninevites did,

  129. how they turned from their evil way,

  130. God relented of the disaster

  131. that he said he would do to them,

  132. and he did not do it.

  133. And so we get the reaction of Jonah

  134. in response.

  135. In the Hebrew,

  136. the literal translation,

  137. according to the experts I learned from,

  138. is this.

  139. Jonah determined that it was evil,

  140. and it burned in him.

  141. That's his response.

  142. That's what God revealed

  143. was inside of Jonah.

  144. God forgave the Ninevites.

  145. Jonah could not.

  146. God displeased Jonah.

  147. From Jonah's perspective,

  148. Nineveh is evil, God.

  149. And if you are just,

  150. how could you not punish evil?

  151. So Jonah thinks that God's mercy is evil.

  152. Now this little story has so much irony.

  153. Irony is another literary device.

  154. So kids,

  155. irony is when a character's contradiction

  156. or you could say in this case,

  157. their hypocrisy,

  158. it's very obvious to us,

  159. the reader,

  160. but the character himself is blind to it.

  161. It's ironic to everyone else.

  162. We see it.

  163. God put the right words

  164. in the mouth of Jonah,

  165. even though he's angry at God.

  166. Look at what Jonah says in verse 2.

  167. God says the right things about God.

  168. God is a God that is merciful,

  169. slow to anger,

  170. and abounding in steadfast love,

  171. and relenting from disaster.

  172. So Jonah's words are the correct theology,

  173. and Jonah is quoting what God has told his people in numerous places.

  174. One of those is Exodus 34,

    Exodus 34:6

  175. verses 6 and 7.

  176. But Jonah does not like who God truly is.

  177. That's the real problem here.

  178. Jonah is displeased with who God truly is.

  179. How do you see God?

  180. It doesn't get any easier for us

  181. in the New Testament, does it?

  182. One example is Romans 9, verse 18,

    Romans 9:18

  183. which says that the Lord has mercy

  184. on whomever he wills,

  185. and he hardens whomever he wills.

  186. How do you see God?

  187. The Lord revealed to Jonah in redemptive history

  188. who God truly is.

  189. The Lord reveals to you and me

  190. in redemptive history

  191. who he truly is.

  192. Second observation is that

  193. Jonah's response to who God truly

  194. reveals himself to be,

  195. it exposes the condition of Jonah's heart.

  196. So Jonah's response

  197. exposes the condition of his heart.

  198. In verse 2,

  199. Jonah prayed unto the Lord

  200. and he complained, saying,

  201. this is what I said

  202. when I was back in my country.

  203. It's why I fled earlier to Tarshish.

  204. Verse 3 says,

  205. I beseech you now, O Lord,

  206. take my life from me,

  207. for it is better for me to die

  208. than to live.

  209. Well, in Jonah chapter 2,

    Jonah 2 chapter mention

  210. Jonah prayed,

  211. thanking God for sparing his own life.

  212. Now in chapter 4,

  213. Jonah prays,

  214. asking for God to take his life.

  215. God, if you're a God

  216. who tolerates the sin

  217. of this wicked people,

  218. how can you be just?

  219. Jonah can't handle

  220. what God has revealed himself

  221. to truly be.

  222. Well, we have to ask the question now,

  223. who has the right to be angry?

  224. whose honor is so great

  225. to show wrath

  226. and whose judgment

  227. is so perfect

  228. to be able to be displeased

  229. in this way

  230. with what they see.

  231. I searched the prophets

  232. and I searched this time period

  233. in the Old Testament

  234. for the words angry

  235. and anger.

  236. And it's very limited to God,

  237. the Lord seeing sin

  238. and having a response of anger.

  239. And it's also limited to kings.

  240. The kings get angry.

  241. So you see what Jonah is doing.

  242. He's putting himself

  243. in the place of a sovereign king.

  244. He's making himself God.

  245. One example is Isaiah 57, 15.

  246. Who is it that can be angry?

  247. In Isaiah's words,

  248. it's the one who is high

  249. and lifted up,

  250. who inhabits eternity,

  251. whose name is holy.

  252. That God says,

  253. I was angry

  254. and hid my face

  255. at sin.

  256. But you can almost picture

  257. that serpent,

  258. just like the worm

  259. that slithers to eat the plant

  260. as it did in the garden.

  261. The enemy,

  262. God's accuser,

  263. slithers in and says,

  264. Jonah,

  265. how could you love

  266. a God like that?

  267. How could you want to live

  268. as a prophet

  269. for that type of a God?

  270. The accuser

  271. wants to always put God

  272. in the defendant's seat.

  273. And to puff Jonah up

  274. as the judge.

  275. A creature

  276. angry

  277. at the creator.

  278. See,

  279. from the outside,

  280. there's no judgment coming.

  281. There's not going to be

  282. a great show.

  283. Jonah goes up to the hill

  284. to watch this happen.

  285. There's nothing to see

  286. on the outside.

  287. What God is revealing

  288. is something

  289. on the inside

  290. of Jonah.

  291. He has a sickness

  292. of the heart.

  293. And God

  294. saved Jonah's life

  295. physically.

  296. Now he needs to save

  297. his soul

  298. spiritually.

  299. And maybe that's the case

  300. for you and I.

  301. Maybe it takes

  302. discomfort

  303. or an unmet expectation

  304. for God to show

  305. that we have

  306. some internal

  307. bleeding going on.

  308. That the great physician,

  309. God himself,

  310. needs to operate

  311. and to restore

  312. and heal you

  313. on the inside.

  314. Charles Spurgeon said,

  315. Many a man

  316. has died

  317. from internal

  318. bleeding

  319. and yet there has

  320. been no wound

  321. whatsoever

  322. to be seen

  323. by the eye.

  324. We know that God

  325. doesn't look at

  326. the outward appearance

  327. like man.

  328. God looks at

  329. the condition

  330. of my heart,

  331. the condition

  332. of your heart.

  333. So this is gracious

  334. of our Lord.

  335. When God shows you

  336. who he truly is,

  337. he's revealing to you

  338. the condition

  339. of your heart

  340. so that he can

  341. operate on it,

  342. so that he can

  343. heal you.

  344. We've seen how

  345. when God shows you

  346. who he truly is,

  347. the true condition

  348. of your heart

  349. is exposed.

  350. Next,

  351. I want to show

  352. how God reveals

  353. the true condition

  354. of your heart

  355. for a purpose.

  356. He does that

  357. in order to minister

  358. to you.

  359. That's what he does

  360. with Jonah

  361. the rest of the chapter.

  362. So God shows you

  363. the true condition

  364. of your heart

  365. in order

  366. to minister

  367. to you.

  368. Notice how God

  369. responds in turn

  370. to Jonah.

  371. Jonah's there angry

  372. as if he were the God.

  373. But God is not

  374. angry at Jonah.

  375. The Lord meets

  376. Jonah with patience

  377. and with fatherly

  378. instruction.

  379. I've got four

  380. observations on how

  381. God ministers

  382. to angry Jonah.

  383. Number one,

  384. God ministered to

  385. Jonah through

  386. personal counsel

  387. with a soul-searching

  388. question.

  389. Isn't this God's

  390. pattern?

  391. He comes to his

  392. people and he

  393. asks you the

  394. questions that make

  395. you search in your

  396. soul.

  397. Look at verse 4.

  398. The Lord said,

  399. Doest thou well

  400. to be angry?

  401. Jonah,

  402. you're determining

  403. what is good

  404. and bad.

  405. You're determining

  406. what should be

  407. pleasing or

  408. displeasing.

  409. Now look at your

  410. heart, Jonah.

  411. Is this good?

  412. Is this pleasing?

  413. There's no response.

  414. There's just

  415. followed by action.

  416. The action shows

  417. the stubbornness

  418. of Jonah's heart.

  419. Look at verse 5.

  420. So Jonah went

  421. out of the city

  422. and sat on the

  423. east side

  424. of the city.

  425. That's the far

  426. side of the city.

  427. He made his way

  428. all the way across

  429. all of Nineveh.

  430. And there's nothing

  431. to buffer him

  432. from the elements

  433. that lie in the

  434. desert beyond.

  435. And there Jonah

  436. made for himself

  437. a booth

  438. and he sat

  439. under it

  440. in the shadow

  441. till he might

  442. see what would

  443. become of the city.

  444. One person

  445. described Jonah's

  446. condition as he

  447. sits under this

  448. little tent he

  449. made for himself

  450. to watch

  451. as sulky

  452. despair.

  453. Jonah's

  454. negotiating

  455. with his own

  456. life before

  457. the Lord.

  458. Destroy them

  459. or destroy me.

  460. He's pouting

  461. in protest.

  462. He thinks

  463. maybe my anger

  464. will stir up

  465. some anger

  466. in God

  467. to do what

  468. I think

  469. is right

  470. for God

  471. to act

  472. justly.

  473. The beauty

  474. of God's

  475. word is

  476. we have

  477. even more

  478. situational

  479. irony here.

  480. His hypocrisy

  481. is just

  482. exposed

  483. and set up

  484. as the main

  485. theme here.

  486. He goes up

  487. to the hill

  488. and what does

  489. your Bible say

  490. he builds

  491. for himself?

  492. What's it

  493. called?

  494. A booth.

  495. He builds

  496. himself a booth.

  497. That's a temporary

  498. dwelling,

  499. a little

  500. tabernacle.

  501. What we saw

  502. in the Gospel

  503. of John,

  504. do you remember

  505. what we saw?

  506. The Feast

  507. of the Booths.

  508. And this is

  509. what God has

  510. told his people

  511. to do.

  512. Booths were

  513. these temporary

  514. little tabernacles

  515. that God had

  516. instructed his

  517. people to build

  518. on one of

  519. their annual

  520. feasts.

  521. And it was

  522. to symbolize

  523. how God

  524. dwells with

  525. his people

  526. and how his

  527. people are

  528. sojourners.

  529. They should be

  530. nimble.

  531. They should be

  532. able to stay

  533. on the move.

  534. And it was

  535. a symbol

  536. of God's

  537. gracious

  538. covenant

  539. coming to

  540. a people

  541. who were

  542. slaves

  543. and now

  544. he dwells

  545. with them.

  546. He tabernacles

  547. among his

  548. people.

  549. Now there's

  550. more to the

  551. Feast of Booths.

  552. It actually

  553. got a second

  554. name.

  555. And this

  556. comes from

  557. Zechariah 14,

  558. 16 and other

  559. places.

  560. Listen to

  561. this.

  562. All the

  563. nations

  564. that have

  565. come up

  566. against

  567. Jerusalem

  568. shall go

  569. up year

  570. after year

  571. to worship

  572. the king

  573. who?

  574. The Lord

  575. of hosts

  576. and to

  577. keep

  578. the feast

  579. of booths.

  580. All the

  581. nations were

  582. to gather

  583. and worship

  584. the God

  585. the Lord

  586. of hosts.

  587. It was

  588. the feast

  589. of the

  590. nations.

  591. Do you

  592. see the

  593. irony?

  594. God's

  595. heart for

  596. the Ninevites,

  597. the Assyrians,

  598. the bad

  599. guys.

  600. That's what

  601. God is

  602. showing Jonah

  603. with his

  604. little booth

  605. that he set

  606. up.

  607. Jonah,

  608. I'm speaking

  609. with you.

  610. I am with

  611. you.

  612. Those who

  613. you view

  614. as your

  615. enemies,

  616. the feast

  617. of booths

  618. is for

  619. them to

  620. come and

  621. worship

  622. me.

  623. The second

  624. observation

  625. is that not

  626. only did

  627. God minister

  628. to Jonah

  629. through this

  630. personal

  631. counsel of

  632. a question,

  633. the Lord

  634. also ministered

  635. to Jonah

  636. through his

  637. providence.

  638. God

  639. appointed

  640. physical

  641. means to

  642. teach Jonah.

  643. Notice

  644. how back

  645. in chapter

  646. 1,

  647. Jonah 1

    Jonah 1:17

  648. verse 17,

  649. the Lord

  650. appointed

  651. a great

  652. fish.

  653. And now

  654. in chapter

  655. 4,

  656. we get

  657. three other

  658. things that

  659. the Lord

  660. appointed.

  661. In chapter

  662. 4,

  663. verse 6,

  664. the Lord

  665. appointed a

  666. plant.

  667. In verse

  668. 7,

  669. the Lord

  670. appointed the

  671. worm.

  672. And in

  673. verse 8,

  674. the Lord

  675. appointed that

  676. vehement

  677. east wind.

  678. A couple

  679. insights to

  680. really paint

  681. this picture

  682. for us.

  683. What was

  684. this plant

  685. perhaps?

  686. Well,

  687. Jerome in the

  688. 300s

  689. thought most

  690. likely this

  691. is a

  692. castor oil

  693. plant.

  694. He wrote

  695. that it's

  696. still cultivated

  697. in our

  698. gardens today.

  699. It is

  700. quick-growing,

  701. beautiful,

  702. tall,

  703. with broad

  704. leaves and

  705. a soft,

  706. succulent

  707. stalk,

  708. and only a

  709. slight injury

  710. of which

  711. will cause

  712. the plant

  713. to die.

  714. And the

  715. Lord

  716. appoints

  717. this

  718. vehement

  719. east

  720. wind.

  721. The

  722. Hebrew

  723. word is

  724. hiroko.

  725. It's a

  726. hot wind

  727. coming out

  728. of those

  729. deserts,

  730. and it

  731. can get

  732. up to

  733. 60

  734. miles

  735. per hour.

  736. And this

  737. is northern

  738. Iran.

  739. It's

  740. similar to

  741. those winds

  742. that many

  743. of you have

  744. come from

  745. California or

  746. Nevada.

  747. You know

  748. those winds

  749. that have

  750. caused those

  751. wildfires

  752. to spread

  753. almost exactly

  754. the same

  755. conditions.

  756. In the

  757. book of

  758. Nahum,

  759. who was a

  760. contemporary

  761. of Jonah,

  762. that

  763. Sirocco

  764. east wind,

  765. it was

  766. used as

  767. an image

  768. of God

  769. and his

  770. coming

  771. judgment

  772. upon the

  773. people

  774. of Israel.

  775. In Nahum

    Nahum 2:1–8

  776. chapter 2

  777. verses 1

  778. through 8.

  779. Do you see

  780. the situational

  781. irony?

  782. And do you

  783. see how

  784. the Lord

  785. is appointing

  786. all the

  787. means to

  788. show Jonah,

  789. Jonah,

  790. I'm the

  791. one who

  792. is bringing

  793. judgment on

  794. all who

  795. rebel against

  796. me.

  797. Just like

  798. I brought

  799. this wind

  800. upon you,

  801. I can bring

  802. my judgment

  803. to Nineveh.

  804. I can bring

  805. my judgment

  806. to Israel.

  807. Just as

  808. you had

  809. comfort because

  810. of a plant

  811. that I made

  812. to grow,

  813. I can remove

  814. your comfort

  815. and I remove

  816. the comfort

  817. of Israel.

  818. I am God,

  819. I will save

  820. whom I will

  821. save.

  822. Salvation

  823. belongs to

  824. the Lord.

  825. Is this

  826. how you

  827. see God?

  828. The songwriter

  829. got it so

  830. right when he

  831. said,

  832. What e'er my

  833. God ordains

  834. is right.

  835. He never

  836. will deceive

  837. me.

  838. He leads

  839. me by the

  840. proper path.

  841. I know

  842. he will not

  843. leave me.

  844. I take

  845. content

  846. what he

  847. has sent.

  848. His hand

  849. can turn

  850. my griefs

  851. away.

  852. So patiently

  853. I wake

  854. his day.

  855. The Lord

  856. appointed

  857. all of these

  858. physical things

  859. to teach

  860. Jonah a

  861. spiritual

  862. reality.

  863. Before we

  864. move to the

  865. next point

  866. of ministry,

  867. I want to

  868. point out

  869. that the

  870. Lord has

  871. given us

  872. physical

  873. appointed

  874. means by

  875. which he

  876. shows us

  877. grace as

  878. well.

  879. He has

  880. given us

  881. his word.

  882. Our Bible

  883. translator last

  884. week challenged

  885. us we need

  886. to read

  887. God's word.

  888. And he

  889. prays God

  890. that we

  891. are a

  892. congregation

  893. that loves

  894. to read

  895. God's word.

  896. The sound

  897. of God's

  898. word in

  899. our language

  900. coming in

  901. through our

  902. ears ministers

  903. to our

  904. mind and

  905. our soul

  906. in ways

  907. that we

  908. can't even

  909. explain.

  910. It is a

  911. means that

  912. God has

  913. appointed and

  914. he ministers

  915. grace.

  916. When we

  917. pray,

  918. we're told

  919. in the

  920. Bible to

  921. pray for

  922. one another.

  923. These are

  924. physical

  925. things we

  926. do.

  927. We

  928. actually

  929. go into

  930. one another's

  931. living rooms

  932. or front

  933. porches and

  934. we pray for

  935. one another.

  936. This is a

  937. physical action

  938. we do in

  939. response to

  940. our covenant

  941. God and

  942. he ministers

  943. as we pray

  944. for one

  945. another.

  946. When we

  947. take the

  948. Lord's

  949. supper or

  950. we get to

  951. see a

  952. baptism,

  953. these are

  954. physical

  955. means he's

  956. appointed that

  957. proclaim a

  958. spiritual

  959. truth.

  960. We're going

  961. to eat

  962. these with

  963. our bodies,

  964. with our

  965. tongues,

  966. we're going

  967. to taste

  968. and smell

  969. and be

  970. reminded of

  971. the spiritual

  972. reality.

  973. You see how

  974. God has

  975. always

  976. appointed

  977. means to

  978. teach his

  979. people and

  980. to minister

  981. to us.

  982. So what's on

  983. us is to

  984. make the

  985. most of

  986. what God

  987. has appointed

  988. and provided.

  989. Make the

  990. most of

  991. that.

  992. Well,

  993. number three,

  994. not only did

  995. God minister

  996. through those

  997. appointed means,

  998. but God

  999. ministered to

  1000. Jonah with

  1001. a lesson

  1002. from the

  1003. lesser to

  1004. the greater.

  1005. God's

  1006. glory as

  1007. the biggest

  1008. heavy thing

  1009. we can

  1010. possibly

  1011. conceive of.

  1012. God

  1013. used this

  1014. plant to

  1015. teach

  1016. Jonah,

  1017. who God

  1018. truly is as

  1019. well,

  1020. to open

  1021. his eyes

  1022. to a

  1023. clearer

  1024. picture of

  1025. the true

  1026. God.

  1027. God.

  1028. The Lord

  1029. basically

  1030. says,

  1031. Jonah,

  1032. these people

  1033. have an

  1034. eternal soul.

  1035. This plant,

  1036. I made it

  1037. grow and I

  1038. can take it

  1039. away.

  1040. Now these

  1041. souls are

  1042. eternal.

  1043. This plant

  1044. grew up and

  1045. died in the

  1046. night.

  1047. These souls,

  1048. they will be

  1049. condemned

  1050. unless I

  1051. bring my

  1052. salvation to

  1053. them,

  1054. Jonah.

  1055. So your

  1056. response,

  1057. Jonah,

  1058. take your

  1059. eyes off

  1060. the lesser.

  1061. Put your

  1062. eyes on

  1063. that which

  1064. is greater.

  1065. That's what

  1066. he's calling

  1067. his people

  1068. to do

  1069. through the

  1070. lessons.

  1071. And Jonah

  1072. remains

  1073. hard-hearted.

  1074. We see

  1075. that in

  1076. every response

  1077. that Jonah

  1078. gives.

  1079. He pushes

  1080. himself lower

  1081. and lower

  1082. again and

  1083. that's how

  1084. the book

  1085. ends.

  1086. But it's

  1087. revealing to

  1088. us that

  1089. what God

  1090. is looking

  1091. for is the

  1092. heart response.

  1093. In chapter

  1094. two,

  1095. Jonah was

  1096. thrown into

  1097. the troubled

  1098. seas,

  1099. the waters

  1100. were what

  1101. were troubled.

  1102. Now in

  1103. chapter four,

  1104. it's his

  1105. heart that

  1106. is troubled.

  1107. As someone

  1108. wrote,

  1109. look on

  1110. thyself as

  1111. in a mirror

  1112. and you

  1113. will see

  1114. what a

  1115. boisterous

  1116. sea the

  1117. soul is.

  1118. And God's

  1119. word, it

  1120. does that for

  1121. us.

  1122. It becomes

  1123. like a

  1124. mirror, as

  1125. James wrote.

  1126. When we

  1127. see our

  1128. reflection in

  1129. the mirror,

  1130. we see how

  1131. troubled we

  1132. are.

  1133. And only the

  1134. presence of

  1135. the Lord can

  1136. steady our

  1137. souls and

  1138. bring that

  1139. peace that

  1140. we need.

  1141. Notice how

  1142. the Lord

  1143. applies this

  1144. lesson to

  1145. reveal himself

  1146. to Jonah in

  1147. verse 11.

  1148. The Lord

  1149. says,

  1150. should not I

  1151. spare Nineveh,

  1152. that great

  1153. city, wherein

  1154. there are more

  1155. than 120,000

  1156. persons.

  1157. What's more is

  1158. that these

  1159. persons cannot

  1160. discern their

  1161. right hand from

  1162. their left,

  1163. and also much

  1164. cattle.

  1165. see these

  1166. people, God

  1167. said in

  1168. verse 11,

  1169. they can't

  1170. discern.

  1171. That term

  1172. means to

  1173. distinguish or

  1174. to discriminate.

  1175. That term is

  1176. used in

  1177. Ezekiel 22

  1178. and also

  1179. 44 to

  1180. describe one

  1181. of the

  1182. tasks of

  1183. priests,

  1184. which was to

  1185. teach the

  1186. people to

  1187. discriminate

  1188. between clean

  1189. and unclean.

  1190. These people

  1191. need the law

  1192. of God.

  1193. They are

  1194. lost.

  1195. It doesn't

  1196. mean the

  1197. Ninevites are

  1198. morally guiltless

  1199. before a just

  1200. God.

  1201. Judgment is

  1202. threatened to

  1203. them unless

  1204. they repent.

  1205. But it does

  1206. mean that they

  1207. are trapped

  1208. in their sin.

  1209. They are

  1210. helpless unless

  1211. God will

  1212. initiate their

  1213. salvation.

  1214. The Lord is

  1215. telling him,

  1216. Jonah, in

  1217. this great

  1218. city there are

  1219. souls.

  1220. These souls

  1221. don't know what

  1222. they're doing.

  1223. Don't you

  1224. see my

  1225. heart for

  1226. these souls?

  1227. And even

  1228. the cattle,

  1229. I'm the

  1230. great creator,

  1231. God says,

  1232. and I

  1233. desire that

  1234. none should

  1235. perish.

  1236. How do you

  1237. see God?

  1238. Well, one

  1239. last way that

  1240. God is

  1241. ministering is

  1242. to the

  1243. people of

  1244. Israel by

  1245. giving them

  1246. this book

  1247. of Jonah.

  1248. God

  1249. ministers

  1250. through the

  1251. life of the

  1252. prophet Jonah.

  1253. God taught

  1254. Jonah through

  1255. the plant.

  1256. The plant was

  1257. a little

  1258. picture lesson.

  1259. But Jonah's

  1260. life was like

  1261. the plant.

  1262. Jonah himself

  1263. was the

  1264. picture lesson

  1265. for all of

  1266. Israel.

  1267. Jonah stands

  1268. as a

  1269. representative of

  1270. the people of

  1271. Israel in this

  1272. story.

  1273. It's to get

  1274. their attention.

  1275. Do you

  1276. remember how

  1277. Ezekiel had

  1278. to do all

  1279. the different

  1280. sign acts?

  1281. Like dig

  1282. holes in his

  1283. walls of his

  1284. house?

  1285. Like we're

  1286. trying to

  1287. escape exile?

  1288. You know,

  1289. shave your

  1290. head because

  1291. you're going

  1292. to be kicked

  1293. out of the

  1294. land?

  1295. Well,

  1296. Jonah's

  1297. life is a

  1298. sign act

  1299. for the

  1300. people of

  1301. Israel.

  1302. Why does

  1303. the book of

  1304. Jonah end

  1305. this way?

  1306. It's

  1307. purposeful.

  1308. The Holy

  1309. Spirit did

  1310. this for a

  1311. purpose.

  1312. Why do we

  1313. end on this

  1314. click finger

  1315. which is,

  1316. I don't know

  1317. how Jonah

  1318. responded.

  1319. And it's to

  1320. teach us.

  1321. But what's

  1322. the lesson?

  1323. Before I tell

  1324. you what I

  1325. think, let me

  1326. tell you this

  1327. other insight.

  1328. Yom Kippur

  1329. is the name

  1330. of the great

  1331. day of

  1332. atonement.

  1333. The great

  1334. day of

  1335. atonement,

  1336. it ends

  1337. with the

  1338. reading of

  1339. all things

  1340. the book

  1341. of Jonah.

  1342. And the

  1343. lesson is

  1344. this, people

  1345. of Israel,

  1346. God has

  1347. provided through

  1348. the scapegoat,

  1349. through the

  1350. sacrificial goat,

  1351. he's provided a

  1352. picture of your

  1353. atonement.

  1354. But finish with

  1355. the book of

  1356. Jonah, which

  1357. calls you to

  1358. respond with

  1359. the heart of

  1360. God, not only

  1361. to save you,

  1362. but to save

  1363. all the nations.

  1364. From those

  1365. fishermen on the

  1366. coastlands, to

  1367. the Ninevites,

  1368. the most wicked,

  1369. despicable people.

  1370. This is who

  1371. atonement is

  1372. truly for.

  1373. There are only

  1374. two books that

  1375. end with a

  1376. question that

  1377. just hangs

  1378. there.

  1379. And it's

  1380. interesting how

  1381. both of those

  1382. have to do

  1383. with the

  1384. Ninevites.

  1385. It's Jonah,

  1386. and the second

  1387. one is Nahum.

  1388. Nahum ends

  1389. with a note of

  1390. judgment.

  1391. For example,

  1392. the Lord is

  1393. slow to anger

  1394. and great in

  1395. power, and the

  1396. Lord will by

  1397. no means

  1398. clear the

  1399. guilty.

  1400. Nahum's a

  1401. contemporary of

  1402. Jonah, and he's

  1403. calling God's

  1404. judgment on the

  1405. Ninevites.

  1406. And though God

  1407. spares the

  1408. Ninevites in

  1409. this story with

  1410. Jonah about

  1411. 40 years later,

  1412. so not 40 days,

  1413. but 40 years

  1414. later, the

  1415. Ninevites are

  1416. conquered by the

  1417. Medes and the

  1418. Babylonians.

  1419. So God is

  1420. just, and his

  1421. justice never

  1422. fails.

  1423. But Jonah ends

  1424. with a note of

  1425. compassion upon

  1426. this great

  1427. worldly city.

  1428. And so you,

  1429. the reader,

  1430. and I, we

  1431. must ponder the

  1432. meaning.

  1433. We must decide

  1434. now what action

  1435. to take.

  1436. We don't get

  1437. Jonah's response

  1438. to be able to

  1439. sit at a distance

  1440. and analyze him.

  1441. We are the

  1442. ones who are

  1443. called upon to

  1444. respond.

  1445. How do you

  1446. see God?

  1447. We want to

  1448. know, did Jonah

  1449. learn this mercy

  1450. from God?

  1451. Brian Estelle,

  1452. who helped me

  1453. so much through

  1454. this book, a

  1455. Hebrew scholar,

  1456. he wrote,

  1457. quote, in some

  1458. respects, that

  1459. question is moot

  1460. because it puts

  1461. you and me, the

  1462. current readers,

  1463. as well as Jonah

  1464. and Israel of

  1465. old, in the

  1466. position of having

  1467. to respond to

  1468. God.

  1469. Will you, my

  1470. people, learn

  1471. my mercy?

  1472. This lack of

  1473. closure teaches

  1474. us that I am

  1475. Jonah, and

  1476. you are Jonah.

  1477. The question

  1478. lingers for you

  1479. and me today,

  1480. will you learn

  1481. God's mercy?

  1482. Not only does

  1483. the Lord minister

  1484. to Israel through

  1485. this wonderful

  1486. little book of

  1487. Jonah, and not

  1488. only was Jonah a

  1489. representative of

  1490. hypocritical Israel

  1491. whose judgment was

  1492. coming soon,

  1493. Jonah is also a

  1494. contrast or a

  1495. foil for the

  1496. great prophet, the

  1497. Lord Jesus

  1498. Christ.

  1499. How do you see

  1500. God?

1501. If we go back to

  1502. Narnia, one year

  1503. of time passes in

  1504. London time, which

  1505. is 130 years in

  1506. Narnia time.

  1507. Lucy's back in

  1508. Narnia now, a year

  1509. older, and when she

  1510. sees Aslan, she

  1511. says, Aslan, you

  1512. seem bigger.

  1513. Is it because you

  1514. have gotten older?

  1515. And Aslan says, no,

  1516. because I don't age,

  1517. but it's because you

  1518. have aged.

  1519. Aslan tells Lucy,

  1520. every year you

  1521. grow, you will

  1522. find me bigger.

  1523. The book of Jonah

  1524. reveals to you and

1525. me that God is so

  1526. much bigger, and it

  1527. points us to the

  1528. biggest, greatest,

  1529. most clear

  1530. revelation of who

  1531. God truly is.

  1532. We saw in the

  1533. book of Jonah how

  1534. God appointed a

  1535. great fish.

  1536. The Lord appointed

  1537. a plant.

  1538. The Lord appointed

  1539. a worm.

  1540. The Lord appointed

  1541. a vehement east

  1542. wind.

  1543. And we read in

  1544. Hebrews 1, verse

    Hebrews 1:1

  1545. 1, how at many

  1546. times and in many

  1547. ways God spoke by

  1548. the prophets, but

  1549. now he has spoken

  1550. to us by his

  1551. son.

  1552. Listen, whom he

  1553. has appointed, the

  1554. heir of all

  1555. things.

  1556. He, the Lord

  1557. Jesus Christ, is the

  1558. radiance of the

  1559. glory of God.

  1560. He is the exact

  1561. imprint of God's

  1562. nature.

  1563. How do you see

  1564. God?

  1565. God.

  1566. God.

  1567. Acts 22, verse 14

    Acts 22:14

  1568. says that God

  1569. appointed you,

  1570. believer.

  1571. God appointed you

  1572. to know his will

  1573. and to see the

  1574. righteous one

  1575. and to hear his

  1576. voice.

  1577. The Lord revealed

  1578. to Jonah in

  1579. history who he

  1580. truly is.

  1581. God.

  1582. And the Lord

  1583. reveals to you

  1584. who he truly

  1585. is by sending

  1586. his own son,

  1587. God the son,

  1588. in the flesh,

  1589. into human

  1590. history so that

  1591. you can see

  1592. God in Christ.

  1593. Jonah was to

  1594. take the word of

  1595. God to the wicked

  1596. world, but instead

  1597. he traveled far

  1598. away.

  1599. But our Lord Jesus

  1600. Christ, who is the

  1601. word of God,

  1602. he traveled into

  1603. the wicked world

  1604. to dwell close

  1605. by among you.

  1606. See God in

  1607. Christ.

  1608. Jonah felt no

  1609. pity, we're

  1610. told.

  1611. But over and

  1612. over and over,

  1613. nine times I

  1614. counted in the

  1615. Gospels, when

  1616. Jesus saw the

  1617. people, he had

  1618. compassion.

  1619. And the word

  1620. is to be moved

  1621. from the depths

  1622. of his being,

  1623. with deep

  1624. compassion for

  1625. those souls.

  1626. Jonah's

  1627. disobedience

  1628. earned death

  1629. for himself

  1630. in deep

  1631. hellish darkness

  1632. at the bottom

  1633. of the sea.

  1634. But Christ's

  1635. obedience earned

  1636. for his elect

  1637. from all the

  1638. nations, eternal

  1639. life in his

  1640. kingdom of life.

  1641. See God

  1642. in Christ.

  1643. God's

  1644. justice.

  1645. Jonah went

  1646. outside the

  1647. city to watch

  1648. the condemnation

  1649. of the wicked.

  1650. Jesus went

  1651. outside the

  1652. city to be

  1653. condemned in

  1654. the place of

  1655. the wicked.

  1656. See God

  1657. in Christ.

  1658. Jonah was

  1659. unsubmissive to

  1660. God's showing

  1661. grace.

  1662. Jesus submitted

  1663. himself as the

  1664. substitute to show

  1665. God's justice.

  1666. Jonah,

  1667. whose name

  1668. again ironically

  1669. means dove

  1670. or peace,

  1671. he prayed

  1672. death

  1673. for enemies.

  1674. Jesus,

  1675. whose name

  1676. means God

  1677. saves,

  1678. he prayed,

  1679. Father,

  1680. please forgive

  1681. them.

  1682. See God

  1683. in Christ.

  1684. God's

  1685. Jonah did

  1686. not remember

  1687. God's

  1688. mercy to

  1689. him.

  1690. Jesus

  1691. remembers

  1692. your sins

  1693. no more.

  1694. Hebrews 8,

  1695. 12.

  1696. See God

  1697. in Christ.

  1698. Jonah

  1699. dishonored

  1700. God

  1701. as though

  1702. the just

  1703. and merciful

  1704. creator did

  1705. not know

  1706. what he was

  1707. doing.

  1708. Jesus

  1709. honored his

  1710. father to

  1711. save you

  1712. and me,

  1713. his killers,

  1714. praying,

  1715. Father,

  1716. they don't

  1717. know what

  1718. they are

  1719. doing.

  1720. Jonah

  1721. said,

  1722. God,

  1723. if you

  1724. don't

  1725. destroy

  1726. these

  1727. sinners,

  1728. then let

  1729. me die.

  1730. Jesus

  1731. said,

  1732. let me

  1733. die that

  1734. these

  1735. sinners

  1736. may live.

  1737. love.

  1738. I love

  1739. the hymn.

  1740. I was

  1741. listening to

  1742. it this

  1743. morning and

  1744. the connection

  1745. is perfect.

  1746. Jesus,

  1747. I am

  1748. resting,

  1749. resting.

  1750. You are

  1751. the brightness

  1752. of my

  1753. father's

  1754. glory,

  1755. sunshine

  1756. of my

  1757. father's

  1758. face.

  1759. I am

  1760. finding out

  1761. the greatness

  1762. of thy

  1763. loving

  1764. grace

  1765. more

  1766. each

  1767. year.

  1768. God

  1769. reveals

  1770. your

  1771. great

  1772. need

  1773. and

  1774. his

  1775. great

  1776. grace

  1777. so that

  1778. you will

  1779. see God

  1780. in Christ.

  1781. Respond

  1782. to who

  1783. God truly

  1784. is by

  1785. confessing

  1786. what

  1787. Jonah

  1788. prayed

  1789. from the

  1790. belly

  1791. of the

  1792. fish.

  1793. Salvation

  1794. belongs

  1795. to you,

  1796. Lord,

  1797. alone.

  1798. God

  1799. will

  1800. save

  1801. whom

  1802. he

  1803. will

  1804. save

  1805. and

  1806. see

  1807. the

  1808. depth

  1809. of

  1810. God's

  1811. mercy

  1812. to

  1813. save

  1814. you

  1815. and

  1816. me.

  1817. Ask

  1818. him

  1819. to

  1820. put

  1821. more

  1822. of

  1823. that

  1824. same

  1825. mercy,

  1826. compassion,

  1827. pity

  1828. inside

  1829. of you.

  1830. We need

  1831. it.

  1832. We can

  1833. only love

  1834. if he

  1835. first

  1836. loves

  1837. us

  1838. and

  1839. fills

  1840. us

  1841. with

  1842. that

  1843. kind

  1844. of

  1845. love.

  1846. Our

  1847. Lord

  1848. Jesus

  1849. Christ,

  1850. he

  1851. is

  1852. the

  1853. full

  1854. revelation

  1855. of

  1856. the

  1857. true

  1858. God.

  1859. Respond

  1860. to

  1861. God's

  1862. mercy

  1863. today.

  1864. See

  1865. God

  1866. in

  1867. Christ.

  1868. Let's

  1869. pray.

  1870. From

  1871. Acts

  1872. 14

  1873. 38.

  1874. Lord,

  1875. we trust

  1876. the promise

  1877. that as

  1878. many as

  1879. were appointed

  1880. to eternal

  1881. life will

  1882. believe.

  1883. And when we

  1884. believe,

  1885. we will

  1886. rejoice and

  1887. we will

  1888. glorify you,

  1889. God.

  1890. You alone

  1891. are worthy.

  1892. Thank you,

  1893. Father,

  1894. for sending

  1895. your Son that

  1896. we can see

  1897. who you

  1898. truly are,

  1899. to see

  1900. your grace

  1901. and your

  1902. love

  1903. lavished

  1904. on sinners

  1905. like us.

  1906. Help us

  1907. to receive,

  1908. Lord,

  1909. once again

  1910. today,

  1911. your great

  1912. gift of

  1913. love,

  1914. through Jesus

  1915. Christ,

  1916. our Lord,

  1917. we pray.

  1918. Amen.
