  1. And so our sermon text is in 2 Corinthians chapter 4.

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  2. We'll be reading 2 Corinthians chapter 4 starting at verse 5.

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  3. 2 Corinthians is maybe the most personal letter that Paul wrote to the church.

  4. He had been going through so much suffering and his opponents were saying that the church shouldn't listen to Paul because look how weak he is.

  5. So they were pointing to his suffering as a sign of weakness.

  6. And then Paul, by the inspiration of the Spirit, takes out the pen and here comes this letter to the church.

  7. It's like Paul's life has been wrung like you would take a wet towel and just wring out all the water of it.

  8. And that's what spills onto the page.

  9. It's what's on the inside of Paul through all that he had been going through.

  10. The essence of his faith comes out in the verses we're going to read.

  11. As I read this, remember that this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  12. It's God's very own word for you, his people.

  13. When I'm done reading, I'll say this is the word of the Lord and will respond.

  14. Thanks be to God.

  15. 2 Corinthians chapter 4 from 5 to 18.

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  16. We preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus, the Lord, and ourselves, your servants, for Jesus' sake.

  17. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

  18. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us.

  19. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed.

  20. We are perplexed, but not in despair.

  21. Persecuted, but not forsaken.

  22. Cast down, but not destroyed.

  23. Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus.

  24. That the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

  25. For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake.

  26. That the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.

  27. So then death worketh in us, but life in you.

  28. We, having the same spirit of faith according as it is written, I believed, and therefore I have spoken.

  29. We also believe, and therefore speak.

  30. Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise us up also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.

  31. For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might, through the thanksgiving of many, redound to the glory of God.

  32. For which cause we faint not, but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

  33. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

  34. While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.

  35. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

  36. This is the word of the Lord.

  37. Thanks be to God indeed.

  38. You may be seated.

  39. The Bible says that the grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  40. Let's pray.

  41. Father, we trust the promise that as rain brings grain for food,

  42. your word goes forth and does not return unto you void.

  43. Your word does accomplish that which you please.

  44. We trust that your word shall prosper in the purpose for which you send it.

  45. I ask, Lord, that you will speak,

  46. speak through the sermon that you have helped me to prepare by the power of your Holy Spirit.

  47. Lord, I am weak, but you are strong.

  48. I pray that the words that come from me as a vessel will just fall and turn to dust and blow away.

  49. But the words that reveal Jesus Christ, the treasure of heaven,

  50. that those will impact your people, Lord.

  51. Encourage them.

  52. Reorient us to what matters most in life for your glory in our lives, we pray.

  53. Amen.

  54. Amen.

  55. Beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  56. I want to talk to you today about what you are.

  57. Not who you are, but what you are.

  58. I feel like this is a dangerous sermon,

  59. not because it's complicated,

  60. but to openly live out our faith,

  61. it is dangerous in this world.

  62. It's God who preserves us.

  63. I'm encouraged that we're not alone

  64. in that battle of doing our best to live out and march out our faith

  65. in a world that hates the gospel.

  66. I'm encouraged by all kinds of different heroes.

  67. I've had the opportunity this past year to study one Puritan in the 1600s.

  68. His name was John Flavel.

  69. So I want to talk to you about the body and the soul from this text today,

  70. but I'm also going to be drawing a lot from John Flavel.

  71. He's become my favorite of all the Puritans.

  72. You might say, why the Puritans?

  73. Well, they got to build on the great doctrines of the Reformation

  74. that had been buried for centuries,

  75. and they lived in a time of extreme persecution.

  76. You'll get some insights into that today.

  77. John Flavel's parents were devout Christians.

  78. They were what was called nonconformists in England.

  79. Their conviction said that they will continue to worship God

  80. despite the restrictions that the government kept imposing.

  81. Well, one evening, his parents gathered with a group of Christians to pray.

  82. That's all they were doing.

  83. They were meeting in a home to pray.

  84. But that was breaking the laws of England.

  85. So they got arrested, and they got put into prison.

  86. And the prisons in the 1600s in England is not where you want to be.

  87. There would be diseases being carried by mice everywhere.

  88. There was no provision of food or even blankets or the basic necessities to live.

  89. So you were depending on your relatives and others,

  90. bringing you everything to survive every day,

  91. and also to pay for your own rent for taking up this space in a public building.

  92. So many prisoners had to pay a beggar to beg for money on their behalf

  93. and then keep a commission.

  94. And under those conditions,

  95. these Puritan, nonconformist Christians,

  96. who were simply trying to be obedient,

  97. they wasted away and died in prison.

  98. Those were John Flavel's parents.

  99. The world viewed the Christians as the problem.

  100. Things haven't changed for us.

  101. It's different, and we're in a time of peace.

  102. But the world still attacks the truth of God's Word.

  103. One specific way that this is happening more and more

  104. is that the world tries to detach your personal identity from what you are.

  105. There are two quotes I came across this week.

  106. I won't even tell you who said them,

  107. because it doesn't really matter.

  108. It's really a symptom of a much deeper issue.

  109. Here's the first quote.

  110. This is wrong, but this is what the world says.

  111. Nature made a mistake which I have corrected.

  112. Well, nature doesn't create anything.

  113. The Bible teaches that God is the creator

  114. and that God is wise

  115. and all of God's ways are perfect.

  116. Here's another quote.

  117. All of us are put in boxes by our society,

  118. our moment in history,

  119. and even our bodies.

  120. And some people have courage to break free.

  121. This view denies Christ as holy,

  122. as the king,

  123. and as the coming judge.

  124. So I think it's very important that you, Christian,

  125. you know what you are.

  126. We can buy into these lies from Satan,

  127. from our own sin inside of us,

  128. and from the world as well.

  129. We can start to think that what I really am

  130. is whatever I feel.

  131. And if what you feel is who you are,

  132. then your feelings will bulldoze over

  133. every aspect of your life.

  134. On the other hand,

  135. if you are only a body,

  136. then there's no world to come.

  137. There's no spiritual realm.

  138. Why would you live this life anyway,

  139. but besides what pleases the body?

  140. So my goal is that if you are a Christian,

  141. you will know more clearly

  142. what you are according to God's word.

  143. I'm going to do my best to persuade you

  144. of this proposition.

  145. What God made you in this life

  146. prepares you perfectly for the next.

  147. I'm going to try to show you five truths

  148. from God's word

  149. about what you and I are.

  150. Here's the proposition one more time.

  151. What God made you in this life

  152. prepares you perfectly for the next.

  153. Number one,

  154. what are you?

  155. You and I are vessels.

  156. Notice Paul's words

  157. in verses five, six, and seven.

  158. Remember, they're criticizing Paul.

  159. They're saying,

  160. Paul, you're so weak.

  161. Who are you?

  162. Why should we listen to you?

  163. There's these super apostles.

  164. There's these very eloquent speakers.

  165. Why would we listen to you?

  166. And Paul's answer is in verse five.

  167. It's because we don't preach ourselves,

  168. but we preach Christ Jesus,

  169. the Lord,

  170. and ourselves as your servants

  171. for Jesus' sake.

  172. Yes, we're low.

  173. We're so low.

  174. We're your slaves.

  175. For God,

  176. who commanded the light

  177. to shine out of the darkness,

  178. has shined in our hearts

  179. to give the light

  180. of the knowledge

  181. of the glory of God

  182. in the face of Jesus Christ.

  183. But we have this treasure

  184. in earthen vessels.

  185. Why?

  186. That the excellency of the power

  187. may be of God

  188. and not of us.

  189. Do you know what you are, Christian?

  190. You are an earthen vessel.

  191. There's dust

  192. that gets mixed with water,

  193. put on a potter's wheel,

  194. and shaped

  195. to a form that's useful.

  196. That's what you are,

  197. and that's what I am.

  198. This is the time of year

  199. where, according to the internet,

  200. 48% of people

  201. make a goal related

  202. to their fitness.

  203. And also,

  204. according to the same source,

  205. 91% fail to keep that.

  206. Why do you think that is?

  207. Well, I think the true answer

  208. is because there's bad theology,

  209. obviously.

  210. But then you could say,

  211. well, does that mean

  212. someone with great theology

  213. is the most fit?

  214. Well, unfortunately,

  215. that's not true either.

  216. You're thinking,

  217. when's the last time

  218. you looked in the mirror

  219. there, preacher?

  220. No Greek statue yourself.

  221. But we are vessels.

  222. But the Bible says

  223. we're also more than vessels.

  224. It says we created

  225. by God in two parts.

  226. Notice in verse 6,

  227. he says that

  228. the gospel shined in your heart.

  229. That's your inner being.

  230. That's one of the parts.

  231. It's inside of you,

  232. who you are in the inside.

  233. Then he says in verse 7,

  234. you're made as an

  235. earthen vessel.

  236. And that's your outer being.

  237. And this is an ancient truth

  238. that's been echoed

  239. through all of the Scripture

  240. very clearly.

  241. We're told in Genesis 2-7

  242. that the Lord God

  243. formed man

  244. of the dust

  245. of the ground.

  246. There's the earthen vessel.

  247. That's the outer man,

  248. the body,

  249. the flesh,

  250. or the strength.

  251. Then,

  252. God also breathed

  253. into his nostrils

  254. the breath of life.

  255. and man became

  256. a living soul.

  257. That's what Genesis 2 says.

  258. So God is the one

  259. who breathed

  260. a spiritual,

  261. inner being

  262. into man.

  263. That's the inner man,

  264. the heart,

  265. the mind,

  266. the soul.

  267. John Flavel said,

  268. a human being

  269. is not a soul

  270. nor a body,

  271. but both together

  272. as a composite.

  273. Notice that when they

  274. asked Jesus,

  275. how should we live?

  276. What does it mean

  277. to obey your law?

  278. Jesus gave a wonderful answer

  279. and he's really just

  280. telling them back

  281. what Moses told

  282. the second generation

  283. before they entered

  284. the promised land.

  285. You know,

  286. the Ten Commandments

  287. went to the first generation

  288. at Mount Sinai,

  289. Exodus 20,

  290. but then to the second generation

  291. that are about to enter

  292. the land in Deuteronomy 5.

  293. Moses summarizes it all up

  294. with what Jesus quotes

  295. in Mark 12, 30.

  296. You shall love

  297. the Lord thy God,

  298. listen to this,

  299. with all thy heart,

  300. soul,

  301. mind.

  302. Is that inner or outer?

  303. Heart, soul, mind.

  304. It's all your inner man

  305. and with all thy strength.

  306. That's the outer man.

  307. Psalm 8 describes

  308. the creation of Adam

  309. and all of Adam's seeds,

  310. so all humankind,

  311. as being made a little lower

  312. than the angels.

  313. angels,

  314. so you're put on earth

  315. in a physical body,

  316. but also given dominion

  317. over all the animals.

  318. So man is in this position.

  319. You're not an angel,

  320. but you're not a beast.

  321. You have a body of a beast.

  322. You have a body

  323. that's an earthen vessel,

  324. but you are a spiritual being.

  325. You're made for eternity.

  326. You're made for that spiritual realm

  327. like the angels.

  328. And then that's interpreted

  329. by the author of Hebrews

  330. in Hebrews 2

  331. as Christ's incarnation.

  332. Christ was made

  333. a little lower than the angels.

  334. Being truly God,

  335. he also became truly man.

  336. And he was given dominion

  337. over all the created realm.

  338. John Flavel wrote

  339. that you are alive physically

  340. now because soul,

  341. your soul,

  342. is the life of your body.

  343. The absence of the soul

  344. is death to the body.

  345. Death is one of the hardest things

  346. for metaphysicists to define.

  347. What is death?

  348. What is death?

  349. And we would say

  350. simply when the soul

  351. leaves the body,

  352. that's death.

  353. So you're alive physically

  354. when your soul

  355. is still in your body.

  356. And created under Adam,

  357. cursed under the sin,

  358. he wrote that

  359. Christless men

  360. are not dead

  361. in the physical sense.

  362. They are naturally alive,

  363. though they are spiritually dead,

  364. because they are separated

  365. from God.

  366. Eternal death

  367. is the separation

  368. of both body

  369. and soul

  370. from God.

  371. What is eternal death?

  372. It's when both your body

  373. and your soul

  374. are detached

  375. from your creator.

  376. That's death.

  377. You see how

  378. what God made you

  379. in this life,

  380. it prepares you perfectly

  381. for the life to come.

  382. God put your soul

  383. in a weak vessel.

  384. Why did he do that?

  385. Well, Paul says here,

  386. it's so that your body

  387. and your weakness

  388. will expose to you

  389. your need for God,

  390. your dependence on Christ.

  391. He says in verse 5,

  392. that's why we preach

  393. Christ Jesus our Lord

  394. and not ourselves.

  395. So it's tempting,

  396. isn't it,

  397. to look around

  398. or just maybe

  399. to look at yourself

  400. if you're like me

  401. and wish God

  402. had given you

  403. a better body

  404. or maybe even

  405. a better mind,

  406. less broken.

  407. That's probably

  408. the root of all

  409. of our envy

  410. and covetousness.

  411. We are weak vessels,

  412. but we have to trust

  413. that God made us

  414. weak vessels

  415. to point us to Him,

  416. to show us

  417. you need God.

  418. You are weak.

  419. You're too weak

  420. on your own.

  421. You need to be right

  422. with your creator.

  423. God did design you,

  424. body and soul,

  425. perfectly for His purposes

  426. in this life

  427. in preparation

  428. for the next.

  429. Verse 7,

  430. it's that the excellency

  431. of the power

  432. may be of God

  433. and not of us.

  434. Amen?

  435. So that's number one.

  436. You are a vessel.

  437. Do you know

  438. what you are?

  439. Number two,

  440. you are a treasure

  441. holding vessel.

  442. You're not only a vessel,

  443. you are a treasure

  444. holding vessel.

  445. Paul wrote in verse 6

  446. that God shined

  447. in our hearts

  448. into our soul

  449. the inner man

  450. and He gave

  451. to your inner being

  452. a treasure

  453. in verse 7.

  454. What is the treasure

  455. He's talking about?

  456. Well, He answers that

  457. in verse 6.

  458. Look at that.

  459. The treasure is

  460. the light

  461. of the knowledge

  462. of the glory

  463. of God

  464. in the face

  465. of Jesus Christ.

  466. That is the treasure.

  467. If you've

  468. seen Jesus

  469. with the eyes

  470. of faith,

  471. you know God

  472. and that's

  473. the treasure.

  474. He says in verse 8,

  475. We are troubled

  476. on every side

  477. yet not distressed.

  478. We are perplexed

  479. but not in despair.

  480. Persecuted,

  481. not forsaken,

  482. cast down

  483. but not destroyed.

  484. Always bearing about,

  485. listen,

  486. in the body

  487. the dying

  488. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  489. That the life

  490. also

  491. of Jesus

  492. might be made

  493. manifest

  494. in our body.

  495. See His perfect design?

  496. I love how

  497. Blaise Pascal

  498. described this.

  499. So,

  500. I'm trying to argue here

  501. that you are

  502. a vessel

  503. that was designed

  504. by God

  505. to hold

  506. this great treasure.

  507. That's what

  508. you were designed for.

  509. And to not have

  510. this great treasure,

  511. listen to how

  512. this mathematician

  513. described it.

  514. He says,

  515. There is a God-shaped

  516. vacuum

  517. in the heart

  518. of each man

  519. which

  520. cannot be

  521. satisfied

  522. by any

  523. created

  524. thing.

  525. That's a lot

  526. of things.

  527. It cannot

  528. be satisfied

  529. by anything

  530. created

  531. but only

  532. by God

  533. the Creator

  534. made known

  535. through Christ

  536. Jesus.

  537. Amen.

  538. There's a creator-creature

  539. distinction.

  540. Nothing

  541. that the Creator

  542. has made

  543. can satisfy

  544. what you

  545. as a vessel

  546. were made

  547. to hold.

  548. The inner

  549. treasure

  550. makes all

  551. of your

  552. outer

  553. suffering

  554. worth it.

  555. And I'm

  556. looking around

  557. the room,

  558. there has been

  559. a lot of

  560. suffering

  561. in the outer

  562. being.

  563. Some of you

  564. are currently

  565. suffering in the

  566. body

  567. right now.

  568. Or even

  569. harder than that

  570. is your dear

  571. loved one

  572. is suffering

  573. deeply

  574. in the

  575. body

  576. of flesh.

  577. Paul says

  578. that the

  579. same God

  580. who spoke

  581. light

  582. into darkness

  583. and created

  584. the whole

  585. world,

  586. that's the

  587. power of

  588. His Word.

  589. He's

  590. regenerated

  591. you.

  592. He has

  593. brought life

  594. to your

  595. inner being.

  596. Your

  597. eternal

  598. destiny

  599. now hinges

  600. entirely upon

  601. whether or

  602. not your

  603. soul,

  604. your inner

  605. person is

  606. united to

  607. Christ

  608. through faith

  609. while your

  610. body still

  611. lives.

  612. When your

  613. soul leaves

  614. your body

  615. it's too

  616. late.

  617. John

  618. Flavel

  619. wrote,

  620. you are

  621. alive

  622. spiritually

  623. now

  624. if

  625. Christ

  626. is the

  627. life

  628. of your

  629. soul.

  630. The

  631. absence

  632. of Christ

  633. is death

  634. to the

  635. soul.

  636. But your

  637. soul,

  638. in verse

  639. 7 we're

  640. told,

  641. receives this

  642. treasure,

  643. the light

  644. of the

  645. knowledge

  646. of God.

  647. And it

  648. makes

  649. everything

  650. you go

  651. through on

  652. the outside,

  653. everything

  654. that that

  655. weak vessel

  656. has to

  657. bear,

  658. as it

  659. wears thinner

  660. and thinner

  661. with the

  662. suffering in

  663. life,

  664. doable.

  665. Not only

  666. doable,

  667. if you

  668. trust that

  669. you were

  670. made in

  671. this life

  672. exactly how

  673. God wanted

  674. you to be

  675. made,

  676. preparation

  677. for the

  678. life to

  679. come,

  680. it makes

  681. your

  682. suffering

  683. now worth

  684. it.

  685. It made

  686. it worth

  687. it for

  688. Paul.

  689. He told

  690. this same

  691. church later

  692. in the same

  693. letter,

  694. not to

  695. brag,

  696. in fact it was

  697. to brag about

  698. his suffering

  699. and his

  700. weakness

  701. as a

  702. vessel.

  703. He was

  704. whipped

  705. with 39

  706. lashes,

  707. 40 would

  708. kill you,

  709. it was one

  710. short of

  711. killing you,

  712. five different

  713. times.

  714. He was

  715. beaten with

  716. rods for

  717. preaching the

  718. gospel of

  719. Jesus Christ,

  720. three different

  721. times.

  722. He was

  723. pummeled with

  724. stones,

  725. which was also

  726. meant to

  727. kill you.

  728. He was

  729. shipwrecked

  730. three times,

  731. traveling to

  732. take the

  733. good news

  734. to those

  735. who had

  736. never heard

  737. it.

  738. On one

  739. of those

  740. trips,

  741. he was

  742. adrift at

  743. sea one

  744. night and

  745. one day.

  746. He was

  747. frequently

  748. having to

  749. travel.

  750. He experienced

  751. dangers from

  752. rivers,

  753. wild beasts,

  754. robbers,

  755. in the

  756. wilderness.

  757. He experienced

  758. danger at

  759. sea,

  760. danger from

  761. false

  762. brothers,

  763. toil and

  764. hardship,

  765. many sleepless

  766. nights,

  767. often hungry and

  768. thirsty,

  769. cold and

  770. exposed,

  771. and he

  772. felt daily

  773. anxiety for

  774. the bride of

  775. Christ.

  776. But it was

  777. all worth

  778. it.

  779. That wasting

  780. away of his

  781. outer man was

  782. worth it because

  783. of the deep

  784. treasure that

  785. God had

  786. shined in

  787. Paul's heart.

  788. It's good for

  789. us to think

  790. about our

  791. body,

  792. our soul,

  793. and even

  794. death.

  795. God gave

  796. us to wear

  797. in the

  798. soul.

  799. God

  800. clothes and

  801. covers it.

  802. It hath

  803. worn this

  804. garment of

  805. flesh from

  806. the beginning

  807. and is to

  808. wear it

  809. still till

  810. sickness has

  811. brought it to

  812. rags and

  813. death stripped

  814. it from its

  815. soul.

  816. It's good for

  817. us to think of

  818. our bodies

  819. as rags or

  820. garments.

  821. It's what

  822. God gave us

  823. to wear in

  824. this life.

  825. It's going to

  826. be decaying

  827. off of our

  828. soul.

  829. It's going to

  830. be turned to

  831. dust.

  832. In the

  833. resurrection,

  834. we will wear

  835. this body

  836. again, but

  837. glorified.

  838. What Paul is

  839. confessing to

  840. the church

  841. here, this

  842. inner strength

  843. of being

  844. united to

  845. Christ, is

  846. the same

  847. thing that

  848. John wrote

  849. in 1

  850. John 4.

  851. He who

  852. is in

  853. you is

  854. greater than

  855. he who

  856. is in

  857. the world.

  858. We need

  859. faith to

  860. hold that

  861. truth and

  862. believe it.

  863. The inner

  864. treasure makes

  865. all the

  866. suffering of

  867. the outer

  868. vessel worth

  869. it, because

  870. what God

  871. made you in

  872. this life

  873. prepares you

  874. perfectly for

  875. the next.

  876. Do you

  877. know what

  878. you are?

  879. you are a

  880. treasure-holding

  881. vessel.

  882. What's more,

  883. as your

  884. vessel wears

  885. thin, what

  886. you are on

  887. the inside

  888. gets manifested.

  889. As your

  890. vessel wears

  891. thin, what

  892. you and I

  893. are on the

  894. inside gets

  895. manifested.

  896. Notice what

  897. Paul writes

  898. in verse 11.

  899. For we

  900. which live

  901. are always

  902. delivered

  903. unto death

  904. for Jesus'

  905. sake, that

  906. the life

  907. also of

  908. Jesus might

  909. be made

  910. manifest,

  911. where?

  912. In our

  913. mortal

  914. flesh.

  915. Verse 12.

  916. So then,

  917. death worketh

  918. in us,

  919. but life

  920. in you.

  921. We, having

  922. the same

  923. spirit of

  924. faith,

  925. according

  926. as it is

  927. written,

  928. I believed,

  929. and therefore I

  930. have spoken,

  931. we also

  932. believe,

  933. and therefore

  934. speak.

  935. Paul's just

  936. bearing witness.

  937. He's testifying.

  938. He's saying

  939. that all of

  940. that suffering,

  941. it wears me

  942. thin, and my

  943. body is dying.

  944. Paul's garments

  945. are worn as

  946. thin as rags,

  947. and these

  948. false teachers

  949. are mocking

  950. him for being

  951. so weak.

  952. He says,

  953. praise God,

  954. God, in

  955. verse 11.

  956. All that

  957. does, as I

  958. wear thin in

  959. my body,

  960. all that

  961. does is it

  962. makes manifest

  963. Jesus Christ,

  964. who's on the

  965. inside,

  966. through my

  967. mortal body.

  968. Praise God.

  969. Well, we all

  970. feel the

  971. wearing away.

  972. Children that

  973. are growing,

  974. you have

  975. growing pains,

  976. you feel your

  977. body growing

  978. and adapting

  979. and changing.

  980. The rest of

  981. us get hurt

  982. doing all

  983. kinds of

  984. very simple,

  985. basic tasks.

  986. Someone said,

  987. life is like

  988. a roll of

  989. toilet paper.

  990. The closer

  991. you get to

  992. the end,

  993. the faster

  994. it goes.

  995. Think about

  996. how many

  997. gifts were

  998. in your

  999. family this

  1000. year that

  1001. had to do

  1002. with managing

  1003. pain or

  1004. providing a

  1005. little bit

  1006. more comfort

  1007. somehow.

  1008. So either

  1009. way, your

  1010. body and

  1011. mine are

  1012. dying.

  1013. we are

  1014. wasting away.

  1015. But the

  1016. difference is

  1017. that when

  1018. Christ is

  1019. the treasure,

  1020. that's not

  1021. a bad thing.

  1022. We're going

  1023. to have a

  1024. day of

  1025. fasting.

  1026. We're going

  1027. to be

  1028. showing how

  1029. weak our

  1030. vessels are

  1031. and whatever's

  1032. on the inside

  1033. will get

  1034. manifested.

  1035. Doesn't that

  1036. happen?

  1037. The Lord

  1038. makes you

  1039. limp around

  1040. for a while

  1041. or puts you

  1042. in a hospital

  1043. bed.

  1044. Whatever's

  1045. on the inside

  1046. gets manifested.

  1047. The world

  1048. can be

  1049. the opposite.

  1050. We

  1051. sympathize.

  1052. This is

  1053. what our

  1054. flesh wants

  1055. too.

  1056. We want

  1057. the outside

  1058. to be

  1059. perfect or

  1060. make everyone

  1061. think it's

  1062. perfect.

  1063. But you

  1064. ask that

  1065. person,

  1066. they say

  1067. they feel

  1068. dead inside.

  1069. Well, we

  1070. believe that

  1071. we were all

  1072. dead inside.

  1073. Ephesians 2.

  1074. Unbelievers

  1075. stay dead.

  1076. we have

  1077. the promise

  1078. that God

  1079. while you

  1080. were dead

  1081. in sin

  1082. he saved

  1083. you.

  1084. He loved

  1085. you.

  1086. He regenerated

  1087. you.

  1088. So our

  1089. body is

  1090. dying

  1091. but we

  1092. have eternal

  1093. life.

  1094. The world

  1095. might try to

  1096. preserve the

  1097. body but if

  1098. there's spiritual

  1099. death

  1100. where is your

  1101. hope?

  1102. Eternal

  1103. death,

  1104. Flavel wrote,

  1105. is the

  1106. separation

  1107. of the

  1108. body and

  1109. the soul

  1110. from God.

  1111. So a

  1112. spiritually

  1113. dead person

  1114. ignores the

  1115. life to

  1116. come.

  1117. But the

  1118. Bible says

  1119. that at the

  1120. resurrection

  1121. both your

  1122. body and

  1123. your soul

  1124. will have

  1125. a horrid

  1126. reunion

  1127. one with

  1128. the other.

  1129. Think of

  1130. that.

  1131. When Christ

  1132. returns and

  1133. those who

  1134. are not

  1135. united to

  1136. Christ in

  1137. their soul

  1138. they will

  1139. be raised

  1140. on the

  1141. great day

  1142. of judgment.

  1143. John

  1144. Flavel

  1145. imagines

  1146. that day

  1147. where their

  1148. body and

  1149. their soul

  1150. are brought

  1151. back together

  1152. one blaming

  1153. the other.

  1154. To paraphrase

  1155. him he said

  1156. the soul

  1157. might say

  1158. body

  1159. you made

  1160. us live

  1161. for all

  1162. of your

  1163. wants.

  1164. It's your

  1165. fault now.

  1166. We have

  1167. no hope.

  1168. The body

  1169. says back

  1170. soul

  1171. your pride

  1172. blocked

  1173. God's

  1174. call.

  1175. But you

  1176. into whose

  1177. heart God

  1178. has shined

  1179. Jesus Christ

  1180. we read in

  1181. verse 10

  1182. you always

  1183. bear about

  1184. in the

  1185. body

  1186. the dying

  1187. of the

  1188. Lord Jesus

  1189. Christ.

  1190. You bear

  1191. the dying

  1192. of Jesus

  1193. in your

  1194. body.

  1195. Paul calls

  1196. this mortifying

  1197. sin putting

  1198. to death

  1199. the remaining

  1200. sin in the

  1201. flesh.

  1202. You want

  1203. to know

  1204. what you

  1205. are.

  1206. then think

  1207. of that.

  1208. Think of

  1209. being united

  1210. to Christ

  1211. in his

  1212. dying.

  1213. We read

  1214. in Luke

    Luke 23:43

  1215. 23

  1216. verse 43

  1217. as Jesus

  1218. hangs dying

  1219. on the

  1220. cross

  1221. and he

  1222. regenerates

  1223. the criminal

  1224. next to

  1225. him.

  1226. Jesus

  1227. promises

  1228. that

  1229. criminal

  1230. this day

  1231. you

  1232. will be

  1233. with me

  1234. in paradise.

  1235. From that

  1236. Flavel

  1237. said

  1238. the soul

  1239. is the

  1240. life of

  1241. the body

  1242. so the

  1243. soul of

  1244. that criminal

  1245. will be

  1246. with Christ

  1247. because they're

  1248. united

  1249. spiritually

  1250. and though

  1251. the body

  1252. of Christ

  1253. will be

  1254. put into

  1255. the grave

  1256. and buried

  1257. and something

  1258. will happen

  1259. to the body

  1260. of that

  1261. criminal

  1262. the soul

  1263. is so

  1264. united

  1265. to Christ

  1266. that that

  1267. day

  1268. the criminal

  1269. will enjoy

  1270. eternal

  1271. life.

  1272. We read

  1273. in John

  1274. 19

  1275. 30

  1276. Jesus

  1277. says

  1278. it is

  1279. finished

  1280. and then

  1281. he bowed

  1282. his head

  1283. and gave

  1284. up his

  1285. ghost

  1286. or his

  1287. spirit.

  1288. So

  1289. Jesus

  1290. died

  1291. he gave

  1292. up his

  1293. soul

  1294. or his

  1295. spirit

  1296. his inner

  1297. being

  1298. was

  1299. separated

  1300. from his

  1301. body.

  1302. It

  1303. fulfills

  1304. what we're

  1305. told in

  1306. Ecclesiastes

  1307. 12

  1308. 7

  1309. then the

  1310. dust

  1311. shall

  1312. return

  1313. to the

  1314. earth

  1315. as it

  1316. was

  1317. in the

  1318. spirit

  1319. to God

  1320. who gave

  1321. it.

  1322. Paul's

  1323. body

  1324. was

  1325. delivered

  1326. over

  1327. to die

  1328. just as

  1329. Christ

  1330. was.

  1331. The

  1332. sacrifice

  1333. that Paul

  1334. endured

  1335. as a

  1336. missionary

  1337. was

  1338. identifying

  1339. with

  1340. Jesus

  1341. Christ

  1342. on the

  1343. cross

  1344. and

  1345. just

  1346. as

  1347. the

  1348. Lord

  1349. Jesus

  1350. gave

  1351. hope

  1352. to that

  1353. criminal

  1354. and to

  1355. you

  1356. and me

  1357. that we

  1358. are united

  1359. to him

  1360. it was

  1361. the

  1362. persecution

  1363. and the

  1364. suffering

  1365. that Paul

  1366. endured

  1367. that was

  1368. a spiritual

  1369. gift

  1370. it was

  1371. giving

  1372. life

  1373. it was

  1374. ministering

  1375. Christ

  1376. to the

  1377. church

  1378. all who

  1379. believe

  1380. share in

  1381. the same

  1382. spirit of

  1383. faith

  1384. he writes

  1385. and it's

  1386. because it

  1387. flows

  1388. from union

  1389. to Christ

  1390. the true

  1391. vine

  1392. all souls

  1393. that are

  1394. engrafted

  1395. into Christ

  1396. share in

  1397. that same

  1398. union

  1399. with Christ

  1400. so God

  1401. might use

  1402. the

  1403. ailments

  1404. the

  1405. illness

  1406. the

  1407. troubles

  1408. that you

  1409. experience

  1410. in your

  1411. body

  1412. in this

  1413. life

  1414. to drive

  1415. your soul

  1416. to that

  1417. union

  1418. and once

  1419. you're united

  1420. to Christ

  1421. he uses

  1422. that union

  1423. to Christ

  1424. to encourage

  1425. you

  1426. as your

  1427. body

  1428. wears thin

  1429. as that

  1430. vessel

  1431. gets weaker

  1432. and weaker

  1433. and weaker

  1434. what's on

  1435. the inside

  1436. will be

  1437. manifest

  1438. he will

  1439. manifest

  1440. that precious

  1441. union to

  1442. Jesus

  1443. Christ

  1444. and God

  1445. will be

  1446. glorified

  1447. in your

  1448. life

  1449. it'll be

  1450. a blessing

  1451. it'll be

  1452. a testimony

  1453. to those

  1454. he brings

  1455. into your

  1456. life

  1457. so you

  1458. are a

  1459. treasure

  1460. holding

  1461. vessel

  1462. and as

  1463. the vessel

  1464. wears thin

  1465. what's on

  1466. the inside

  1467. gets

  1468. manifested

  1469. do you

  1470. want to

  1471. know

  1472. what you

  1473. are

  1474. you are

  1475. a body

  1476. and a

  1477. soul

  1478. made

  1479. made

  1480. for God's

  1481. glory

  1482. you are

  1483. a body

  1484. and a soul

  1485. made for

  1486. God's

  1487. glory

  1488. verses 14

  1489. through 17

  1490. knowing

  1491. that he

  1492. which raised

  1493. up the

  1494. Lord Jesus

  1495. shall raise

  1496. up us

  1497. also

  1498. by Jesus

  1499. and shall

  1500. present us

  1501. with you

  1502. for all

  1503. things are

  1504. for your

  1505. sakes

  1506. that the

  1507. abundant

  1508. grace

  1509. might through

  1510. the thanksgiving

  1511. of many

  1512. redound

  1513. to the

  1514. glory

  1515. of God

  1516. for which

  1517. cause we

  1518. faint not

  1519. but though

  1520. our outward

  1521. man perish

  1522. yet the

  1523. inward

  1524. man is

  1525. renewed

  1526. day by

  1527. day

  1528. for our

  1529. light

  1530. affliction

  1531. is but

  1532. for a

  1533. moment

  1534. and it

  1535. works for

  1536. us a

  1537. far more

  1538. exceeding

  1539. and eternal

  1540. weight

  1541. of glory

  1542. verse

  1543. 15

  1544. what is

  1545. all this

  1546. for

  1547. why does

  1548. God allow

  1549. weak

  1550. vessels

  1551. to go

  1552. through

  1553. all that

  1554. we go

  1555. through

  1556. in a

  1557. life

  1558. it's

  1559. that it

  1560. may

  1561. redound

  1562. it may

  1563. multiply

  1564. it may

  1565. reverberate

  1566. as

  1567. thanksgiving

  1568. for the

  1569. glory

  1570. of God

  1571. and he

  1572. says he's

  1573. working the

  1574. glory of

  1575. God

  1576. inside of

  1577. you

  1578. he calls

  1579. it the

  1580. eternal

  1581. weight

  1582. of glory

  1583. that's even

  1584. more exceeding

  1585. than what

  1586. you know

  1587. now

  1588. we have

  1589. the promise

  1590. that our

  1591. Lord Jesus

  1592. will present

  1593. you to

  1594. God

  1595. body

  1596. and soul

  1597. faultless

  1598. how can

  1599. he do

  1600. this

  1601. how can

  1602. God

  1603. who created

  1604. you as a

  1605. body and

  1606. soul

  1607. present you

  1608. broken as

  1609. you and I

  1610. are

  1611. faultless

  1612. in this

  1613. way

  1614. Hebrews 2

  1615. answers this

  1616. question

  1617. Hebrews 2

  1618. 14

  1619. because you

  1620. and I

  1621. are flesh

  1622. and blood

  1623. Christ

  1624. himself

  1625. also

  1626. likewise

  1627. became

  1628. flesh

  1629. and blood

  1630. that through

  1631. his death

  1632. he might

  1633. destroy the

  1634. devil who

  1635. has the

  1636. power

  1637. of death

  1638. Jesus

  1639. Christ

  1640. became

  1641. a man

  1642. we read

  1643. in the

  1644. Chalcedonian

  1645. Creed

  1646. he became

  1647. a full

  1648. man

  1649. body

  1650. and soul

  1651. according to

  1652. his human

  1653. nature

  1654. in order

  1655. to deliver

  1656. you as

  1657. the only

  1658. mediator

  1659. between

  1660. God

  1661. and man

  1662. in order

  1663. to present

  1664. you

  1665. faultless

  1666. before

  1667. God

  1668. John

  1669. Flavel

  1670. wrote

  1671. that at

  1672. death

  1673. the soul

  1674. feels

  1675. the house

  1676. in which

  1677. it dwelt

  1678. dropping

  1679. into

  1680. ruins

  1681. what will

  1682. your soul

  1683. do on

  1684. that day

  1685. either

  1686. Christ

  1687. takes

  1688. your soul

  1689. that day

  1690. when your

  1691. body

  1692. drops

  1693. like a

  1694. collapsing

  1695. house

  1696. and Christ

  1697. presents

  1698. you

  1699. faultless

  1700. or you're

  1701. left

  1702. homeless

  1703. away

  1704. from God

  1705. your sin

  1706. cannot be

  1707. in his

  1708. holy

  1709. presence

  1710. he says

  1711. your soul

  1712. will be

  1713. looking for

  1714. a new

  1715. habitation

  1716. but if

  1717. you're

  1718. united

  1719. to Christ

  1720. in your

  1721. soul

  1722. you don't

  1723. fear

  1724. death

  1725. Flavel

  1726. wrote

  1727. on that

  1728. day

  1729. you can

  1730. happily

  1731. let go

  1732. of your

  1733. body

  1734. trusting

  1735. that

  1736. Christ

  1737. will

  1738. receive

  1739. you

  1740. forever

  1741. and

  1742. one day

  1743. he will

  1744. call

  1745. your

  1746. body

  1747. to be

  1748. reunited

  1749. to your

  1750. soul

  1751. the glorified

  1752. state

  1753. of the

  1754. resurrection

  1755. so we

  1756. behold the

  1757. glory of

  1758. God in

  1759. Jesus

  1760. by faith

  1761. now

  1762. it's the

  1763. invisible

  1764. realm

  1765. one day

  1766. that faith

  1767. will be

  1768. made

  1769. sight

  1770. Job

  1771. said

  1772. it's

  1773. with my

  1774. eyes

  1775. that I

  1776. will

  1777. see

  1778. my

  1779. redeemer

  1780. one

  1781. day

  1782. what a

  1783. great

  1784. and exceeding

  1785. weight

  1786. of glory

  1787. that

  1788. expression

  1789. the

  1790. weight

  1791. of

  1792. glory

  1793. the

  1794. weight

  1795. of your

  1796. gold

  1797. or your

  1798. treasure

  1799. represented

  1800. who you

  1801. were

  1802. and how

  1803. much

  1804. you

  1805. were

  1806. literally

  1807. how much

  1808. you are

  1809. worth

  1810. so you

  1811. could go

  1812. to one

  1813. man's

  1814. household

  1815. and he

  1816. would have

  1817. his little

  1818. treasury

  1819. you would

  1820. have to

  1821. stockpile

  1822. all of

  1823. that up

  1824. and weigh

  1825. it

  1826. and you

  1827. go to

  1828. another

  1829. man's

  1830. house

  1831. and you

  1832. take

  1833. all

  1834. that he

  1835. owns

  1836. and put

  1837. it on

  1838. a balance

  1839. and weigh

  1840. it all

  1841. up and add

  1842. up how much

1843. treasure you've been able to amass for yourself

1844. and however much it weighs

1845. the more glorious or powerful or wealthy you are

  1846. Paul's lost everything

  1847. he's like Job

  1848. in the New Testament

  1849. he's lost everything

1850. but he's trusting by faith

1851. there is a greater weight

  1852. of glory

1853. in the life to come

1854. we trust in the words of Romans 14

  1855. that whether we live

  1856. or die

  1857. we are the Lord's

  1858. for to this end

  1859. Christ died

  1860. rose

  1861. and revived

  1862. that he might be

  1863. both Lord

  1864. of the dead

  1865. and of the living

  1866. we sang now

  1867. which was

  1868. our catechism

  1869. the first one

  1870. in an orthodox catechism

1871. what is your only comfort

  1872. in life

  1873. and in death

  1874. the answer is

1875. that I am not my own

  1876. but I belong

  1877. body and soul

  1878. to my faithful Savior

  1879. Jesus Christ

  1880. he has fully paid

  1881. for all my sins

  1882. with his precious blood

1883. what God made you in this life

  1884. prepares you perfectly

  1885. for the next

  1886. Flavel wrote

1887. that when the light of this world is gone

1888. and all the joy ceases on earth

  1889. as you mourn

  1890. around a deathbed

  1891. it's faith

1892. that can give us sights

  1893. of things invisible

  1894. in the other world

  1895. those sights

  1896. will breathe life

  1897. into your souls

  1898. amidst the very pangs

  1899. of death

  1900. praise God

  1901. for this gift

  1902. of faith

  1903. if your outer

  1904. self

  1905. is wasting away

  1906. it's for God's glory

  1907. there's a bright

  1908. shining treasure

  1909. in your soul

  1910. the knowledge

  1911. of God

  1912. and the more cracks

  1913. start to spread

  1914. throughout the vessel

  1915. of the body

1916. the more of the light

  1917. of Christ

  1918. can shine through

  1919. the more your body

  1920. is wasting away

  1921. the more

  1922. you put to death

  1923. the desires

  1924. of your flesh

  1925. all the more

  1926. does Jesus

  1927. shine through

  1928. because you are

  1929. body and soul

  1930. made for God's glory

  1931. well here's the last

1932. thing you need to know

  1933. about what you are

  1934. you are made

  1935. body and soul

  1936. for the everlasting

  1937. world to come

  1938. you are made

  1939. body and soul

  1940. not for this world

  1941. but for the everlasting

  1942. world to come

  1943. that's what Paul writes

  1944. in verse 18

  1945. while we look not

  1946. at the things

  1947. which are seen

  1948. but at the things

  1949. which are not seen

  1950. for the things

  1951. which are seen

  1952. are temporal

  1953. but the things

  1954. which are not seen

  1955. are eternal

  1956. how do you know

  1957. that what Paul

  1958. is saying is true

  1959. how can you know

  1960. that this is

  1961. what's really

  1962. going to happen

  1963. when this life

  1964. is over

  1965. when your body

  1966. the house

  1967. collapses

  1968. and your soul

  1969. enters the spiritual

  1970. realm

  1971. without a body

  1972. there's no way

  1973. for me to prove

  1974. this to you

  1975. scientifically

  1976. you need to ask

  1977. the Lord

  1978. to give you

  1979. a gift of faith

  1980. but one day

  1981. for everyone

  1982. death will prove

  1983. whether the testimony

  1984. of God's word

  1985. is true

  1986. death

  1987. will put this

  1988. to the test

1989. so we have to ask

  1990. the question

  1991. for John Flavel

  1992. was this testimony

  1993. something he could

  1994. hold on to

  1995. by faith

  1996. until the very end

  1997. I told you

  1998. about his parents

  1999. at the beginning

  2000. and England

  2001. at this time

  2002. was ravished

  2003. by plagues

  2004. some of the worst

  2005. most deadly plagues

  2006. of the history

  2007. of that country

  2008. in the year 1666

  2009. there was a great

  2010. great fire

  2011. that destroyed London

  2012. on top of that

  2013. the nation

  2014. was tossed

  2015. and turned

  2016. back and forth

  2017. with civil war

  2018. when the side

  2019. that was fighting

  2020. against the Puritans

  2021. when they were

  2022. trying to restrain

  2023. and institute

  2024. a formal religion

  2025. over the whole country

  2026. then those who were

  2027. like John Flavel

  2028. and his parents

  2029. who had convictions

  2030. to worship

  2031. according to the scripture

  2032. in their conscience

  2033. when they disobeyed

  2034. the government

  2035. willfully

  2036. they received

  2037. much opposition

  2038. from the government

  2039. as well as

  2040. from the people

  2041. a mob

  2042. formed outside

  2043. of John Flavel's home

  2044. they formed

  2045. an effigy

  2046. like they made

  2047. basically a straw

  2048. man

  2049. with a picture

  2050. of John Flavel

  2051. you're supposed to know

  2052. that's who this is

  2053. mocking him

2054. and they set it on fire

  2055. for 25 years

  2056. of ministry

  2057. the government

  2058. banished

  2059. the Puritans

  2060. from their country

  2061. many were in prison

  2062. like John Bunyan

  2063. where he wrote

  2064. Pilgrim's Progress

  2065. During this time

  2066. John Flavel

  2067. had to sneak back

  2068. into the village

  2069. the congregation

  2070. had to go out

  2071. into open fields

  2072. to meet him

  2073. to hear

  2074. the word of God

  2075. preached

  2076. he was imprisoned

  2077. he had to

  2078. have their meetings

  2079. disrupted

  2080. several times

  2081. and he had to

  2082. get on a horse

  2083. and run away

  2084. and be chased down

  2085. one time

  2086. he got in some

  2087. rough waters

  2088. he had to leave

  2089. the horse behind

  2090. and just swim

  2091. through the rocks

  2092. and the river

  2093. darted

  2094. into the ocean

  2095. to get away

  2096. during this time

  2097. with the plagues

2098. he had a dear loss

  2099. within his own household

2100. it was his wife Jane

  2101. and she died

  2102. giving birth

  2103. to his only child

  2104. who also died

  2105. in the year

  2106. 1656

  2107. listen to how

  2108. Flavel reflected

  2109. on this tragic

  2110. double loss

  2111. he wrote

  2112. quote

  2113. the almighty

  2114. visited my tent

  2115. with his rod

  2116. that's like the prayer

  2117. of Job

  2118. that James read

  2119. for us

  2120. and in one year

  2121. the Lord

  2122. cut off

  2123. from my tent

  2124. both the root

  2125. and the branch

  2126. the tender mother

  2127. and the only son

  2128. but John Flavel

  2129. wasn't hopeless

  2130. he wrote

  2131. there is still though

  2132. an everlasting tie

  2133. between the Christ

  2134. and the believer

  2135. a tie stronger

  2136. than all other unions

  2137. of the world

  2138. death

  2139. he said

  2140. dissolves

  2141. the dear union

  2142. between husband

  2143. and wife

  2144. friend

  2145. and friend

  2146. even soul

  2147. and body

  2148. but not

  2149. between

  2150. Christ

  2151. and your soul

  2152. we have the promise

  2153. in this text

  2154. that the same God

  2155. who raised up

  2156. the Lord Jesus

  2157. from the dead

  2158. he shall

  2159. raise us up

  2160. also

  2161. by the power

  2162. of Jesus

  2163. and just as

  2164. Christ

  2165. pulls your soul

  2166. to heaven

  2167. the encouragement

  2168. for us now

  2169. is your soul

  2170. being united

  2171. to Christ

  2172. in heaven

  2173. let your soul

  2174. also pull your body

  2175. heavenward

  2176. the grief

  2177. of Christians

  2178. in this life

  2179. Flavel wrote

  2180. is only

  2181. temporary

  2182. amen

  2183. it will be

  2184. replaced

  2185. by joy

  2186. at the resurrection

  2187. when your souls

  2188. meet your bodies

  2189. and bless God

  2190. one for the other

  2191. forevermore

  2192. on that day

  2193. both body

  2194. and soul

  2195. of the believer

  2196. will enjoy

  2197. the infinite

  2198. satisfaction

  2199. of being together

  2200. once again

  2201. in Christ

  2202. do you see

  2203. how God

  2204. made you

  2205. body and soul

  2206. perfectly

  2207. for his purpose

  2208. in this life

  2209. to prepare us

  2210. for the next

  2211. all glory

  2212. be to God

  2213. you know

  2214. what you are

  2215. in the words

  2216. of 1 Corinthians 6

  2217. 19 and 20

  2218. Christian

  2219. you are

  2220. the temple

  2221. of the Holy Spirit

  2222. which is in you

  2223. which you have

  2224. of God

  2225. you are

  2226. not your own

  2227. you are

  2228. bought

  2229. with a price

  2230. therefore

  2231. glorify God

  2232. in your body

  2233. and in your spirit

  2234. because you

  2235. are

  2236. the Lord's

  2237. amen

  2238. let's pray

  2239. oh Lord

  2240. we confess

  2241. the same words

  2242. as ancient Job

  2243. we know

  2244. that our

  2245. Redeemer

  2246. lives

  2247. and at the

  2248. last day

  2249. he will

  2250. stand upon

  2251. this earth

  2252. and with our

  2253. eyes

  2254. we shall

  2255. see him

  2256. help us

  2257. to live

  2258. in this life

  2259. in preparation

  2260. for the life

  2261. to come

  2262. so that you

  2263. will be glorified

  2264. in our body

  2265. and in our spirit

  2266. we ask this

  2267. for Christ's sake

  2268. alone

  2269. amen
