  1. So, you can please turn in your Bible to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  2. All the way back at the beginning, Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  3. We're beginning this semester a series on covenant theology.

  4. So, it's an approach to understanding and interpreting the Bible

  5. that focuses on how God has made a relationship or a covenant with people.

  6. The divine covenants throughout the scriptures.

  7. The first covenant that we're looking at, it's how we received it in God's word.

  8. It's how the story is told in Genesis 1, 2, and 3.

  9. And over time, the church has come to call it the covenant of works with our first king, Adam.

  10. So, last week was part one on the covenant of works.

  11. This week is part two.

  12. Our sermon text today begins with Genesis chapter 3, verse 6.

    Genesis 3:6

  13. I'll try to call out where we're reading next,

  14. and we'll catch the key verses through these chapters.

  15. As I read this, remember that this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  16. It's God's very own word for you and me, His people.

  17. So, after we've heard God's word, let's respond with the word of the Lord.

  18. Thanks be to God.

  19. All right, Genesis chapter 3, verse 6.

    Genesis 3:6

  20. Verse 7.

  21. Now look at verse 17.

  22. To Adam, God said,

  23. Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you,

  24. you shall not eat of it.

  25. Cursed is the ground because of you.

  26. In pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life.

  27. Thorns and thistles it shall bring forth to you,

  28. and you shall eat the plants of the field.

  29. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground.

  30. For out of it you were taken, for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.

  31. Look at verse 23 next.

  32. Therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.

  33. He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that returned,

  34. I'm sorry, a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

  35. Genesis chapter 4 verse 1.

    Genesis 4:1

  36. Now Adam knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying,

  37. I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.

  38. And again she bore his brother Abel.

  39. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground.

  40. In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground,

  41. and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions.

  42. And the Lord had regard for Abel in his offering, but for Cain in his offering he had no regard.

  43. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.

  44. The Lord said to Cain, Why are you angry?

  45. Why is your face fallen?

  46. If you do well, will not you be accepted?

  47. If you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door.

  48. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.

  49. Cain spoke to Abel his brother, and when they were in the field,

  50. Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.

  51. Then the Lord said to Cain, Where is your brother?

  52. He said, I do not know.

  53. Am I my brother's keeper?

  54. And the Lord said, What have you done?

  55. The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground,

  56. and you are now cursed from the ground,

  57. which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.

  58. When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength.

  59. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.

  60. Cain said to the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

  61. Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground,

  62. and from your face I shall be hidden.

  63. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth,

  64. and whoever finds me will kill me.

  65. Then the Lord said to him, Not so.

  66. If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.

  67. And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him.

  68. Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord

  69. and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

  70. This is the word of the Lord.

  71. Thanks be to God.

  72. You may be seated.

  73. The Bible says that the grass withers and the flower fades,

  74. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  75. Let's pray.

  76. O Lord, your word is effectual.

  77. When your word goes forth, what you declare happens.

  78. You spoke this world into existence,

  79. and your word goes forth and it regenerates.

  80. It does not return to you void, but it does prosper in your purpose.

  81. May your word go forth today, Lord, for your glory.

  82. May all who have an ear to hear from their creator hear your word clearly.

  83. Please guard my lips,

  84. and may your Holy Spirit press into the souls of each one today your truth.

  85. We ask this in Jesus' name and for your glory alone.

  86. Amen.

  87. Amen.

  88. Well, some call winter restlessness cabin fever,

  89. but it doesn't get better.

  90. We get to the spring and then we complain about spring fever.

  91. Mark Twain pointed something out about the human soul that's insightful.

  92. He says, when you've got it, you want, oh, you don't know quite what you want.

  93. You do know you want something,

  94. and it just fairly makes your heart ache that you want it so badly.

  95. That's what it is.

  96. It's a restless heart.

  97. We saw last time how the Lord God created this world.

  98. He said it was very good, and then the Lord rested.

  99. So the Lord rests.

  100. He sits enthroned over his creation,

  101. but yet we, his creatures, even though we were made good,

  102. we are so restless.

  103. Why is that?

  104. I feel like today the purpose is really to answer that question.

  105. We are in a broken curse.

  106. You know, the covenant with Adam was a tripwire,

  107. and all of the effects are still at play

  108. on those born into this fallen, broken world.

  109. We were created to share in God's rest,

  110. but we know that we don't have that fully yet,

  111. and we desire that, don't we?

  112. Some days we desire that more than anything else.

  113. So one way to describe this restless state

  114. that all the world is in

  115. is that we are east of Eden.

  116. We saw last week how the garden was the temple,

  117. presence of the Lord.

  118. Did you pick up on that phrase that was repeated twice

  119. in our sermon text today?

  120. Look at chapter 3, verse 24.

  121. Therefore, God drove out the man

  122. east of the garden of Eden.

  123. And then look again at the very end of our sermon text,

  124. chapter 4, verse 16.

  125. The next generation,

  126. Cain went away from the presence of the Lord,

  127. and he settled in the land.

  128. What direction?

  129. East of Eden.

  130. So in Hebrew narrative,

  131. when we get a phrase like that repeated,

  132. it bookends a passage.

  133. That's why our sermon text is a bit longer,

  134. because it all goes together.

  135. We're supposed to pick up on that clue.

  136. That means something.

  137. And as God's word unfolds,

  138. we know that the temple

  139. was to face a certain direction,

  140. the same direction as the tabernacle.

  141. What direction does the door of the temple face?

  142. It faced east.

  143. So to the extent that the garden of Eden

  144. was a prototypical dwelling presence of God,

  145. it's facing east,

  146. and man is being driven out of that holy presence of God.

  147. So as we walk through that,

  148. I want to try to answer for you

  149. Covenant of Works Part 2,

  150. what are we born into?

  151. You were born into a world

  152. that's east of Eden,

  153. and it affects everything.

  154. Number one,

  155. God's holy presence filled Eden,

  156. leaving no room for sin.

  157. God's holy presence filled Eden,

  158. leaving no room for sin.

  159. Eden was a garden temple,

  160. but when Adam and Eve sinned,

  161. it changed their relationship

  162. and their standing

  163. and even their inner being.

  164. So first,

  165. sin makes you feel exposed

  166. before the holy God.

  167. Take a look again at chapter 3, verse 6.

  168. They ate.

  169. Verse 7 then says,

  170. their eyes were opened.

  171. They knew that they were naked.

  172. That's because sin makes you feel exposed

  173. before the all-knowing,

  174. omniscient God.

  175. And then what comes next?

  176. Well,

  177. feeling exposed,

  178. man works to cover himself up.

  179. They sewed fig leaves together

  180. and made themselves loincloths.

  181. They get to work.

  182. We got to make this right.

  183. Sinful man tries to then hide himself from God,

  184. but notice where they're trying to hide.

  185. They're trying to hide within God's own temple.

  186. It's in Eden.

  187. Look at verse 8.

  188. They heard the sound of the Lord God,

  189. and where was the Lord God walking,

  190. so to speak?

  191. He was walking in the garden

  192. in the cool of the day.

  193. The man and his wife hid themselves

  194. from the presence of the Lord God,

  195. and where did they try to hide?

  196. Among the trees of the garden.

  197. They're still inside Eden.

  198. Now that word,

  199. the cool of the day,

  200. the word is ruach,

  201. and that means wind,

  202. spirit,

  203. or breath.

  204. Literally,

  205. verse 8 is translated this way,

  206. Yahweh Elohim

  207. walking

  208. in the wind,

  209. the spirit

  210. of the day.

  211. So here's the temple presence of God

  212. in the garden of Eden,

  213. and here comes the great wind

  214. that they hear.

  215. It's rustling the leaves and the grass.

  216. And this represents the presence of God

  217. filling up his temple,

  218. leaving no room for their sin.

  219. That same word is used

  220. associated with new creation.

  221. Remember at the very beginning,

  222. the spirit of God hovered.

  223. There's the picture like a great eagle

  224. hovering its wings,

  225. the flapping in the wind,

  226. hovering over the waters of the deep.

  227. And then we're told later

  228. in Genesis chapter 8,

    Genesis 8 chapter mention

  229. after the world had been destroyed,

  230. a ruach,

  231. a wind,

  232. spirit,

  233. breath,

  234. blows away the waters

  235. of the flood.

  236. And this allows them

  237. the dove of peace

  238. to settle

  239. and bring back

  240. life to show

  241. there's going to be

  242. a new beginning for mankind.

  243. We can go all the way

  244. to the new covenant.

  245. Remember in Acts 2,

  246. there's a wind,

  247. a ruach,

  248. that fills up

  249. the early church.

  250. And the spirit of God

  251. says,

  252. these people

  253. are my temple.

  254. I dwell with them.

  255. And Adam

  256. gives a priest's report

  257. of what he experienced

  258. in verse 10.

  259. Look at that.

  260. He said,

  261. I heard the sound

  262. of you,

  263. God,

  264. in the garden.

  265. And what effect

  266. did it have on Adam?

  267. I was afraid.

  268. Why?

  269. Because I was naked.

  270. What did you do?

  271. I hid myself

  272. anywhere I could,

  273. even within the temple,

  274. garden of Eden.

  275. Do you see the curses

  276. of this broken covenant

  277. of works

  278. changing

  279. these humans,

  280. these image bearers?

  281. man is afraid.

  282. Man feels naked.

  283. He's working

  284. himself

  285. to cover up

  286. his own shame.

  287. And he feels like

  288. he's got to

  289. get out of here

  290. and hide somehow,

  291. somewhere,

  292. from this glory

  293. presence

  294. of God.

  295. Well,

  296. east of Eden,

  297. God still makes

  298. the weight

  299. of his glory

  300. known.

  301. Without God,

  302. we know

  303. we are lost.

  304. we know

  305. we need to hide

  306. when we encounter

  307. him,

  308. the sacred creator,

  309. without a mediator

  310. to stand between us.

  311. We can look at

  312. our own lives,

  313. our own past,

  314. and many buildings

  315. that call themselves

  316. churches of all

  317. different,

  318. you know,

  319. sects that are

  320. working to make

  321. things right

  322. for themselves

  323. with God.

  324. It's a religion

  325. based on man's

  326. work,

  327. man trying to

  328. cover up

  329. the shame

  330. of sin.

  331. 2 Corinthians

  332. 4.17

  333. says that this

  334. light,

  335. momentary

  336. affliction

  337. that Christians

  338. in this world

  339. east of Eden

  340. experienced,

  341. it prepares us

  342. for an eternal

  343. weight of glory

  344. beyond all

  345. comparison.

  346. sin.

  347. This first point

  348. is that God's

  349. holy presence

  350. filled Eden,

  351. leaving no room

  352. for sin.

  353. The best

  354. illustration I've

  355. ever heard

  356. is from

  357. Newton's first

  358. law of motion.

  359. To paraphrase it,

  360. it says that a

  361. greater external

  362. force will move

  363. in to set

  364. lesser things

  365. in motion.

  366. So let's

  367. try to

  368. visualize this.

  369. If we had a

  370. big cylinder

  371. right here

  372. full of water,

  373. let's put

  374. something of

  375. lesser weight

  376. in there.

  377. Let's put

  378. petals,

  379. flower petals

  380. in there.

  381. And then we

  382. took something

  383. a little bit

  384. heavier like

  385. raisins.

  386. We dropped

  387. raisins in.

  388. As that

  389. raisin goes

  390. down,

  391. you'd be able

  392. to see those

  393. petals being

  394. put in motion

  395. because the

  396. raisin is a

  397. little bit

  398. more weighty

  399. and it sets

  400. those lesser

  401. things in motion.

  402. Now picture

  403. a great boulder,

  404. rock of ages,

  405. cleft for me

  406. dropped in here.

  407. That rock,

  408. the weight of

  409. God's glory,

  410. as it pushes

  411. down,

  412. it sets

  413. everything into

  414. upheaval and

  415. into motion.

  416. And then when

  417. it's settling,

  418. it's the

  419. weightiest thing

  420. upon which

  421. everything else

  422. will find its

  423. rest.

  424. So here's the

  425. temple,

  426. Garden of Eden.

  427. And as the

  428. glory presence

  429. of God moves

  430. in,

  431. Adam and Eve

  432. are like those

  433. petals and those

  434. raisins set in

  435. motion trying to

  436. cover themselves

  437. and hide

  438. wherever they

  439. can,

  440. the weight

  441. of God's

  442. glory so

  443. fills His

  444. dwelling place

  445. that there's no

  446. room for sin.

  447. It's going to be

  448. drawn up and

  449. stirred and

  450. pushed out.

  451. So when you

  452. and I as

  453. saved sinners,

  454. if you're a

  455. believer,

  456. when we encounter

  457. the Holy God,

  458. it's that same

  459. weight of God's

  460. glory filling

  461. His temple,

  462. leaving no room

  463. for sin in us

  464. His people.

  465. Praise God,

  466. right?

  467. It's slow and

  468. gradual,

  469. but we want

  470. the weight of

  471. God's glory to

  472. push everything

  473. else into its

  474. proper place.

  475. Number two,

  476. in Eden,

  477. Adam broke

  478. God's moral

  479. law that was

  480. written on his

  481. heart.

  482. We're trying to

  483. understand what it

  484. is to be east

  485. of Eden, in this

  486. world, east of

  487. Eden, but we

  488. got to start back

  489. in Eden.

  490. And what was it

  491. that was in the

  492. conscience and the

  493. heart that so

  494. stirred up Adam?

  495. Well, let's shed

  496. some light on this

  497. shadowy part of the

  498. Bible from Romans

    Romans 2:14

  499. chapter 2, verses

  500. 14 and 15, which

  501. say,

  502. lawless pagans, so

  503. those east of

  504. Eden that know

  505. nothing about God,

  506. they do by nature

  507. what the law

  508. requires.

  509. You got to stop

  510. right there and ask

  511. yourself, what law

  512. is this?

  513. What law is it that

  514. pagans do by nature?

  515. It's not the

  516. ceremonial law of

  517. killing a lamb on

  518. a Passover or

  519. something like that.

  520. And it's not

  521. necessarily the

  522. civil law.

  523. It's referring to

  524. what the church has

  525. called over time

  526. the moral law.

  527. It's the law that

  528. is attached to the

  529. character and the

  530. attributes of God

  531. himself.

  532. It's what has

  533. always pleased God

  534. and always will

  535. please him.

  536. It's the moral law

  537. of God.

  538. And this shows,

  539. says Romans

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  540. chapter 2, that

  541. the work of the

  542. law is written

  543. on their hearts.

  544. while their

  545. conscience also

  546. bears witness.

  547. So in the inner

  548. man, the heart

  549. and the conscience,

  550. God has written

  551. his moral law.

  552. Well, we can take

  553. that truth and we

  554. can try to make

  555. more sense now of

  556. what was it on

  557. Adam's heart that

  558. was written.

  559. The church has

  560. wrestled with it.

  561. I think there was a

  562. really helpful clarity

  563. in the 1800s in

  564. Scotland.

  565. It was called the

  566. Marrow Controversy.

  567. And in this little

  568. book on law and

  569. gospel, one author,

  570. showed how this

  571. could be true.

  572. And Romans chapter

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  573. 2 could be true of

  574. Adam.

  575. How was it that

  576. Adam broke the

  577. moral law as they

  578. were expressed and

  579. codified in the

  580. Ten Commandments

  581. given later in

  582. redemptive history?

  583. And here's what the

  584. Marrow of Modern

  585. Divinity, that little

  586. book from the 1800s

  587. in Scotland, said.

  588. Let's walk through

  589. the Ten Commandments

  590. with Adam in mind.

  591. Number one is to

  592. have no other gods.

  593. Well, Adam obeyed

  594. the servant's word

  595. instead of the

  596. Lord's word.

  597. And instead of his

  598. creator, he chose

  599. Satan as his God.

  600. Number two is have

  601. no idols before God.

  602. Philippians 3.19 says

  603. that man has made

  604. his belly his God.

  605. So Adam's lust to

  606. eat the forbidden

  607. fruit was an idol.

  608. It was idolatry.

  609. Number three is the

  610. name of the Lord.

  611. By taking Satan's

  612. bait, which was

  613. did God really say,

  614. Adam took the name

  615. of the Lord in vain,

  616. undermining God's

  617. goodness attached to

  618. his name.

  619. That's who God is.

  620. Number four is to

  621. keep the Sabbath day

  622. as a day of rest

  623. made for man to

  624. worship the Lord.

  625. And Adam did not

  626. keep the rest in

  627. which God had set

  628. him.

  629. Number five is to

  630. honor your father.

  631. Adam dishonored his

  632. heavenly father and

  633. therefore his days

  634. were not prolonged

  635. in that land, Eden,

  636. that the Lord had

  637. given him.

  638. Number six is don't

  639. kill.

  640. But Adam murdered

  641. himself and all his

  642. posterity.

  643. Number seven is don't

  644. commit adultery.

  645. And both in his eyes

  646. and his mind, Adam

  647. committed spiritual

  648. adultery against his

  649. Lord with whom he was

  650. in the covenant of

  651. works.

  652. Number eight is don't

  653. steal.

  654. Well, Adam trespassed

  655. the boundary God gave

  656. him and he unlawfully

  657. stole that one thing

  658. that God said was not

  659. his to take.

  660. Number nine is false

  661. witness.

  662. In obeying Satan, Adam

  663. bore witness against

  664. God.

  665. And number ten, don't

  666. covet.

  667. Adam coveted that one

  668. thing God said he may

  669. not have.

  670. So in the words of

  671. Romans chapter three

  672. verse 19, we know

  673. that what the law

  674. says it saith to them

  675. who are under the law

  676. that every mouth may be

  677. stopped and all the

  678. world may become

  679. guilty before God.

  680. So we ask the question,

  681. how is it that the

  682. whole world could become

  683. guilty before God?

  684. How is it that the

  685. world deserves the wrath

  686. of God?

  687. It's because in Adam's

  688. fall sinned we all.

  689. We are born under the

  690. curses of the broken

  691. covenant of works.

  692. But that moral law,

  693. those ten commandments,

  694. God has still put in the

  695. heart and the conscience

  696. of all mankind east of

  697. Eden.

  698. So in Eden, Adam broke

  699. God's moral law that was

  700. written on his heart.

  701. Number three, the weight

  702. of God's glory in Eden,

  703. it exposed the sins of

  704. both the body and the

  705. soul.

  706. My point here is that this

  707. is so pervasive.

  708. It affects every aspect of

  709. a human being, this fallen

  710. sinful nature.

  711. Well, we know that Adam

  712. and Eve, they sinned with

  713. their bodies.

  714. They saw the fruit with

  715. their eyes.

  716. They saw that it was

  717. pleasing to the eye.

  718. They ate the fruit with

  719. their teeth, their mouth.

  720. And then they saw that

  721. they were naked.

  722. So their bodies are

  723. exposed as being sinful.

  724. But notice where God's

  725. three questions to Adam

  726. go.

  727. God uses his three

  728. questions to deal not

  729. with the outer man.

  730. God gets always.

  731. He's getting at the heart.

  732. God goes after the inner

  733. man.

  734. Look at verse nine.

  735. Here's the first question.

  736. The Lord God called to the

  737. man and said to him.

  738. Notice who the Lord is

  739. addressing here.

  740. He's going to the federal

  741. head.

  742. He's going to Adam, who

  743. represents that type of a

  744. federal head who, you know,

  745. his works, obedience or

  746. disobedience, will affect all

  747. of his posterity.

  748. And the first question is,

  749. where are you?

  750. Where are you?

  751. The second question is in

  752. verse 11.

  753. God said, who told you that

  754. you were naked?

  755. And the third question, have

  756. you eaten of the tree in

  757. which I commanded you to

  758. eat?

  759. We saw in Sunday school,

  760. referring back to last week

  761. as well, there are three

  762. offices in the Old Testament

  763. that are anointed.

  764. You know what they are.

  765. prophet, priest, and king.

  766. I think there's a connection

  767. between those three offices

  768. and these questions that the

  769. Lord is asking.

  770. See, Adam was the viceroy.

  771. He was the first king of

  772. mankind.

  773. And the Lord asks him, where

  774. are you?

  775. In other words, Adam, you

  776. forgot.

  777. You were in God's kingdom.

  778. I made you the first king of

  779. mankind, but you're a

  780. vassal servant.

  781. God himself is your

  782. covenant lord.

  783. Where are you, Adam?

  784. You're trying to hide in the

  785. temple behind the trees

  786. inside of Eden?

  787. This is my garden, says the

  788. glory of God.

  789. And the presence filling up

  790. the whole temple.

  791. Where are you?

  792. You're in my temple.

  793. You're in my kingdom.

  794. Adam had received the word

  795. of God directly from God.

  796. Adam did not Eve.

  797. So Adam was a prophet to Eve

  798. and his family and his

  799. posterity.

  800. He was the one to declare

  801. the truth of God.

  802. God asked him, Adam, who

  803. told you otherwise?

  804. You failed as a prophet.

  805. Who told you?

  806. You know what I told you,

  807. Adam.

  808. So you failed as a king,

  809. Adam.

  810. You failed as a prophet.

  811. In Luke chapter 3, verse 38,

    Luke 3:38

  812. we're given the reverse

  813. genealogy that goes all the

  814. way back to Adam.

  815. And then Adam is described

  816. as the son of God.

  817. And Adam, as God's son,

  818. did not love God with all of

  819. his heart, soul, mind, and

  820. strength.

  821. Nor did he love his neighbor,

  822. which is his wife, and all

  823. mankind as himself.

  824. So Adam broke God's positive

  825. law.

  826. He failed to represent well his

  827. posterity.

  828. And the Lord asks him,

  829. who told you you were naked?

  830. So he's exposed now.

  831. He's laid bare before God.

  832. I don't want to force this too

  833. much, but it made me wonder,

  834. like, the role of a priest,

  835. you know, of all those

  836. anointed offices, that was the

  837. only one that was clothed in

  838. special garments.

  839. And we know that in the New

  840. Testament, we are clothed with

  841. the righteousness of Christ.

  842. And Christ is depicted in

  843. Revelation as being that great

  844. high priest whose, you know,

  845. whose robes shine like precious

  846. jewels adorning him.

  847. And that's the picture we're

  848. given in the Old Covenant with

  849. the ceremonial law, the high

  850. priest, those from the line of

  851. Aaron, they had to wear these

  852. jewels representing all the

  853. tribes.

  854. But Adam is not clothed like a

  855. glorious high priest.

  856. There's no glory bouncing off and

  857. radiating the beauty of God to

  858. the people.

  859. Instead, he's naked.

  860. He's failed as a priest.

  861. He's exposed.

  862. And God's justice requires that

  863. the first federal head and

  864. all those under him received the

  865. curses of breaking this

  866. covenant of works.

  867. Adam had been put in the Garden

  868. of Eden as a probationary period

  869. of testing.

  870. And instead, he failed in his

  871. appointed office, prophet,

  872. priest, and king, transgressing

  873. the whole moral law that God had

  874. put in his heart.

  875. So the consequence we read in

  876. verses 23 and 24.

  877. Therefore, the Lord God sent him

  878. out of the Garden of Eden to work

  879. the ground from which he was

  880. taken.

  881. He drove the man out at the east

  882. of the Garden of Eden and placed

  883. the cherubim with a flaming sword

  884. that turned in every way to guard the

  885. way to the tree of life.

  886. And that's the world we are born into,

  887. the world east of Eden.

  888. You picture a glass of water that has

  889. just one drop of something else.

  890. And that something else is poison.

  891. The whole cup is poisoned.

  892. So all of us born east of Eden are

  893. under these effects of sin.

  894. We're not as wicked as we could be

  895. because God is showing preserving

  896. mercies.

  897. But every aspect of us has the taint or

  898. the poison of the original sin.

  899. So number three, the weight of God's

  900. glory in Eden, it exposed sin,

  901. both in the body and in the soul of

  902. man and mankind.

  903. Number four, east of Eden is a world

  904. under this curse of sin, but it's also

  905. under the providence of a merciful

  906. covenant Lord.

  907. And if you pay attention to the

  908. language that comes next, you get on

  909. almost every verse you get both.

  910. You get, here's the effects of the

  911. curse and here's some preserving

  912. mercy.

  913. You get that all the way through.

  914. Let me give you some examples.

  915. Look at Genesis chapter 3 verse 17.

    Genesis 3:17

  916. God says, cursed is the ground

  917. because of you.

  918. In pain, there's the curses part, but

  919. now look at the preserving mercy.

  920. You shall eat of it all the days of

  921. your life.

  922. Now the curse of covenant breaking is

  923. death, but God's still giving them

  924. some days of life and he's still

  925. giving them food to eat to preserve

  926. them longer.

  927. You see both there?

  928. Curses of the sin, but also preserving

  929. mercy.

  930. They shall eat, but it shall be in pain.

  931. Now look at verse 18.

  932. Thorns and thistles it shall bring

  933. forth to you.

  934. In other words, your work will bring

  935. forth bread.

  936. You'll be able to survive, but only with

  937. thorns and thistles.

  938. You shall eat of the plants of the

  939. field, but only, verse 19, by the sweat

  940. of your face shall you eat bread.

  941. So you will live on for some days in

  942. life, but only until you return to the

  943. ground.

  944. You are dust and to dust you shall

  945. return.

  946. What does this mean for all of us now?

  947. East of Eden, under the curses of the

  948. covenant of works.

  949. Because of Adam's breach of the covenant

  950. of works, all people are doomed to

  951. perish in the state of sin and misery

  952. into which Adam fell.

  953. We are born spiritually dead, spiritually

  954. detached from God.

  955. Adam fell out of communion with God into

  956. a depraved, defaced, and enslaved

  957. nature.

  958. And that's what we're born into.

  959. We're not as corrupt as we possibly

  960. could be.

  961. The imago Dei, the image of God is

  962. still on all people, but it's defaced,

  963. it's scratched.

  964. Picture taking a penny, you can see

  965. Abraham Lincoln's silhouette, and then

  966. you scratch it with rocks.

  967. That's what we are, born under the

  968. curses of sin.

  969. There's no part of us in the state that

  970. we're born into that is untainted.

  971. He says that you will die and you will

  972. return to dust, but I will mercifully

  973. allow you to work and to eat and so

  974. live on.

  975. So that's the providence of God over all

  976. of mankind.

  977. The days of man are numbered.

  978. Every single soul, the Lord knows how

  979. many more days he will give them.

  980. Then we read in Genesis chapter 4 verse

    Genesis 4:1

  981. 1 that Adam knew his wife and she

  982. conceived and bore Cain, saying,

  983. I have gotten a man with the help of the

  984. Lord.

  985. There's God's preserving mercy.

  986. We deserve death.

  987. We deserve for our line to be cut off.

  988. But the Lord, with his help, has given us

  989. children.

  990. This fulfills and shows us what Romans

    Romans 2:4

  991. chapter 2 verse 4 describes as the

  992. riches of God's kindness, forbearance, and

  993. patience.

  994. His kindness, the kindness of God in

  995. dealing with them in the curse this way,

  996. Romans chapter 2 says, is meant to lead

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  997. you to repentance.

  998. All of the curses are in effect, but God

  999. is patient and kind.

  1000. Why?

1001. So that man will repent and see God's

  1002. goodness.

1003. Turn to Genesis chapter 5.

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

1004. I want you to see something really cool with

  1005. the genealogy.

  1006. Genesis chapter 5.

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

1007. We're given the line of Adam's descendants

1008. all the way to Noah, which is important for a

1009. few reasons, but what I want to point out to

1010. you is this pattern and the way that it's

  1011. recorded.

  1012. Look at verse 5.

  1013. Genesis 5 verse 5 says,

    Genesis 5:5

1014. So in all the days that Adam lived, there's

1015. God's preserving mercy, giving him many days.

  1016. They were 930 years.

1017. God is patient for man to repent.

1018. But then what does it say next?

  1019. And he died.

1020. So the curses are still in effect.

1021. Now look at verse 8.

1022. So all the days of Seth were 912 years.

1023. God is patient for man to repent.

  1024. And he died.

1025. The curses are in effect.

  1026. Verse 11.

1027. So all the days of Enosh were 905 years.

1028. Because God is patient for man to repent.

  1029. But he died.

1030. Because the curses are still in effect.

  1031. Last one, verse 14.

1032. So all the days of Kenan were 910.

1033. Because God is patient for man to repent.

  1034. And he died.

1035. Because the curses are still in effect.

  1036. So dear friends.

1037. In our 18 months or so as a church plant here.

1038. We haven't had to do a single funeral.

1039. But the day is coming.

1040. And it will be heartbreaking.

  1041. Let's think about that.

  1042. Each one of us.

1043. We don't know our days.

1044. You will live blank more days.

  1045. On earth.

1046. Every day is a gift from the Lord.

  1047. Because God is patient.

1048. For you and me to repent.

  1049. To behold his kindness.

1050. Then you and I one day will die.

1051. Because the curses are in effect.

1052. Don't be found on that day.

1053. Under the curses of the covenant of works.

1054. There's more good news coming.

1055. Let's look at number five.

  1056. So to recap.

1057. Number four is that east of Eden is a world.

1058. Under the curse of sin.

1059. But also under the providence.

1060. Of a merciful covenant Lord.

  1061. Number five.

1062. East of Eden man must work hard to survive.

1063. But no amount of work will earn your return to the tree of life.

1064. East of Eden man must work hard to survive.

1065. But no amount of work will earn your right to the tree of life.

1066. We see in verse 23.

  1067. Chapter 3.

1068. Therefore the Lord God sent them out from the garden of Eden.

1069. To work the ground from which he was taken.

1070. He drove out the man.

1071. And at the east of the garden of Eden.

  1072. He placed the cherubim.

  1073. With the flaming sword.

  1074. Lord.

1075. We cannot earn God's favor.

1076. We cannot earn eternal life.

1077. By keeping the moral law.

1078. Even though it's written on our heart.

1079. New Testament makes this very clear.

1080. No man is saved by his own works.

  1081. That none should boast.

1082. We are saved by grace alone.

1083. For the glory of God.

1084. Then we have to ask the question.

1085. If the moral law of God is written on all of man's heart.

1086. Even after we've been banished from God's presence.

1087. We're living east of Eden.

1088. What purpose does it serve to have the moral law?

1089. The ten commandments known in our conscience and our heart.

1090. The Westminster Larger Catechism answers it this way.

1091. What use of it is?

1092. The moral law is of use to all men to inform you.

1093. Of the holy nature and will of God.

1094. And of your duty to walk accordingly.

1095. To convince you of your inability to keep God's law.

1096. It exposes the sinful pollution of your nature as Adam's heir.

1097. And God's law humbles you.

1098. To sense how real your sin and misery is.

1099. The law of God is put on our hearts.

  1100. Even before we're saved.

1101. To drive us to the cross.

1102. To show us that we cannot merit life for ourselves.

1103. And this is good because it helps us to get a sight of our need for God to condescend.

1104. To come to us in mercy and in saving grace.

1105. We need the perfect obedience of Christ in our place.

1106. So East David and man must work to survive.

1107. But it's never going to be saving work.

1108. Isaiah 24 5 says the earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof.

1109. Because they have transgressed the laws.

1110. They have changed the ordinance.

  1111. Broken the everlasting covenant.

1112. Romans 2 2 says the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things.

1113. For God shows no partiality.

1114. And Romans 2 6 says God will render to each one according to his works.

1115. So the covenant of works was between God and Adam as the first federal head.

1116. But the effects of the covenant of works are for all of us.

1117. And God will render now to us our works.

1118. However much good you do.

1119. Is that going to be enough to save you?

1120. And under the curse of Adam there is no access to the tree of life.

1121. Our works cannot save us.

  1122. We have fallen.

1123. We have been too far broken.

1124. We are hopeless unless God himself will save us.

  1125. Number six.

1126. East of Eden all God's image bearers still owe their creator right worship.

1127. Our bookends where it's described as being east of Eden.

1128. It starts with Adam but it doesn't stop there.

1129. It includes that next generation.

1130. That has to be for a reason.

1131. What are we supposed to learn from this contrast between Cain and Abel?

1132. Well there's a lot to learn from Abel but that's not our focus on the covenant of works.

1133. Let's stick with Cain for today.

1134. Cain knew God exists as the ruler over all creation.

1135. And how would Cain and Abel both have learned to bring offerings and give a sacrifice to God?

1136. How would they have learned that?

1137. It would have been from their parents.

1138. So Adam and Eve knew what pleases the Lord and they taught their children that.

1139. But each child has to respond for themselves.

1140. So Cain knew that he owed worship to God because his parents had trained him.

  1141. We can infer this.

1142. And also because Romans 1 chapter 20 says,

1143. For God's invisible attributes, namely his eternal power and divine nature,

1144. have been clearly perceived ever since the creation of the world.

1145. In the things that have been made.

1146. So they are without excuse.

  1147. Cain had no excuse.

1148. You and I have no excuse.

1149. God has made himself known since the creation.

1150. So we read in chapter 4 verse 2 that Abel was a keeper of sheep and Cain a worker of the ground.

1151. Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground.

1152. In verse 4, Abel brought a blood sacrifice.

1153. A lamb, the firstborn of the flock.

1154. As their parents had taught them that God requires.

1155. And the Lord had regard for Abel in his offering.

1156. But Cain in his offering God had no regard.

1157. I have questions about this.

1158. I'm sure you probably do too.

1159. John Milton in a classic book.

1160. He was also a Puritan.

  1161. It's called Paradise Lost.

  1162. He wrote,

1163. Neither man nor angel can discern hypocrisy, the only evil that walks invisible except to God alone.

1164. And when the Lord did not accept Cain's offering, Cain was very angry and his face fell.

1165. Galatians 3.10 says that all who rely on works of the law are under a curse.

1166. For it is written, Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law.

  1167. And do them.

1168. Your own works, the work of your hands, cannot please God.

1169. You must obey everything, the entire moral law, in order to merit any favor for yourself.

1170. And the Lord was merciful.

1171. He said to Cain, look in verse 7,

1172. Cain, if you do well, will you not be accepted?

1173. Cain knew what was pleasing to God.

1174. He knew what it was to do well.

1175. As Aldous Huxley mocked, he said,

1176. You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you mad.

1177. And so Cain gets mad.

  1178. He knows the truth.

1179. Do well, and God will be pleased.

  1180. Romans 1.28 says,

1181. Since we did not see fit to acknowledge God,

1182. and this is Cain's sin,

1183. God gave us up to a debased mind to disobey the law of God.

1184. And that's exactly how it pans out.

  1185. Cain kills Abel.

1186. East of Eden, sin inside man is deadly.

1187. The world is dark and dangerous.

1188. The world east of Eden is a scary place.

  1189. Amen?

1190. And that's the world we are born into.

  1191. East of Eden, though,

1192. all of God's image bearers still owe the Lord God, their creator,

  1193. right worship.

1194. We owe that to him.

1195. Let me see if I can pull this together.

1196. Covenant of works for today.

1197. Our only hope of life rests in a new federal head

1198. who can fulfill the covenant of works now,

1199. east of Eden, on our behalf.

1200. We need a federal head

1201. to come into this fallen, dark, scary world,

  1202. east of Eden.

1203. And we need him to fulfill this covenant of works

1204. that the righteous and just God requires.

1205. Not because he lacks anything,

  1206. because we need that

1207. to be done for us

  1208. on our behalf.

1209. The Son of God himself

1210. must enter this cursed world

  1211. east of Eden.

  1212. His whole life,

1213. he would delight in good,

1214. and he would never know evil.

  1215. As prophet,

1216. the Son of God would preach God's word truthfully.

  1217. As priest,

1218. he would be clothed in true righteousness.

  1219. And as king,

1220. he will rule with true peace

  1221. within his kingdom

  1222. on this broken world.

1223. God the Son, the Creator,

  1224. would submit himself

  1225. to the corrupt judgment

1226. and unjust condemnation of man

  1227. in the manly temple.

1228. And he would be driven out

  1229. east of the temple.

1230. He would be sent out

1231. away from this earthly temple.

1232. He would have to exit

  1233. those courts.

1234. And he would have to go stand

  1235. in the cursed land,

1236. the hill of the skull.

1237. He would be surrounded by

  1238. bones and flames.

  1239. Golgotha,

  1240. with the valley behind,

1241. east of the temple in Jerusalem,

  1242. a picture of death,

  1243. corruption,

  1244. and curse.

  1245. It's the polar opposite

1246. of the Garden of Eden,

  1247. the temple garden.

  1248. John Milton again wrote,

  1249. long is the way

  1250. and hard

  1251. that out of hell

  1252. leads up

  1253. to light.

1254. And so the Son of God

  1255. would bear the curse

  1256. of covenant breakers,

  1257. the full wrath

  1258. of the Holy God

  1259. on the tree

  1260. of death.

  1261. death.

  1262. And so God

  1263. himself

  1264. would fulfill

  1265. the demands

  1266. of his own justice

  1267. to inaugurate

  1268. his new creation,

  1269. he himself

  1270. becoming

  1271. the tree

  1272. of life.

  1273. Brothers and sisters,

  1274. we were born

  1275. east

  1276. of Eden

  1277. in a restless

  1278. world.

  1279. Augustine

  1280. of Hippo,

  1281. he had chased

  1282. pleasure in his life,

  1283. he had chased money,

1284. and he had chased fame.

1285. But as an old man

  1286. writing to the church,

  1287. he confessed,

  1288. Lord,

  1289. you created me

  1290. for yourself,

  1291. and my heart

  1292. was restless

  1293. until it found

  1294. its rest

  1295. in you.

  1296. So the good news

  1297. for us

  1298. is that Jesus Christ

  1299. fulfilled that

  1300. covenant of works

  1301. east of Eden

  1302. on our behalf.

  1303. And he says,

  1304. come unto me

  1305. all you

  1306. who are tired

  1307. and heavy laden.

  1308. And I was born

  1309. east of Eden

  1310. for this purpose,

  1311. to give you rest

  1312. in God.

  1313. Let's pray.

  1314. From Romans 6, 12.

  1315. Lord, we find

  1316. our rest

  1317. in you.

  1318. We are no longer

  1319. in this perishing

  1320. world

  1321. as slaves.

  1322. We are now here

  1323. as adopted children.

  1324. We belong

  1325. to the kingdom

  1326. of heaven.

  1327. And we ask,

  1328. Lord,

  1329. by the power

  1330. of your Holy Spirit,

  1331. therefore,

  1332. for sin to not

  1333. reign

  1334. in our mortal body

  1335. so that we

  1336. obey its lusts

  1337. and to not go

  1338. on presenting

  1339. the parts

  1340. of our body

  1341. to sin

  1342. as instruments

  1343. of unrighteousness.

  1344. But help us,

  1345. Father,

  1346. to present ourselves

  1347. to you,

  1348. God,

  1349. as those who are

  1350. alive from the dead

  1351. and your body parts

  1352. as instruments

  1353. of righteousness

  1354. for God.

  1355. We thank you

  1356. that sin

  1357. shall no longer

  1358. be master

  1359. over those

  1360. who you purchased

  1361. and adopted.

  1362. We are no longer

  1363. under the covenant

  1364. and the curses

  1365. of law-breaking,

  1366. but now in Christ,

  1367. by faith alone,

  1368. through grace,

  1369. we are under

  1370. the covenant

  1371. of redemption.

  1372. We belong to you

  1373. because you loved us

  1374. before the foundation

  1375. of the world

  1376. in Jesus Christ,

  1377. our Savior.

1378. To him be all glory

  1379. and honor,

  1380. now and forevermore.

  1381. Amen.

  1382. Amen.

  1383. Amen.

  1384. Amen.

  1385. Amen.
