  1. Our sermon text today is Psalm 110, all seven verses.

  2. We're in covenant theology as a series,

  3. and what we can listen for as we read through Psalm 110

  4. is the covenant of redemption.

  5. So this is God's decree in eternity, outside of time,

  6. and it's his decree to redeem a people.

  7. The Father will give the Son a people.

  8. So listen for that theme as we read,

  9. and remember we trust that this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  10. It's God's very own word for you and me, who he calls his people.

  11. So when I'm done reading, I'll say this is the word of the Lord,

  12. and we'll say together, thanks be to God.

  13. Psalm 110, starting at verse 1.

  14. A psalm of David.

  15. The Lord says to my Lord,

  16. sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.

  17. The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter.

  18. Rule in the midst of your enemies.

  19. Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power in holy garments.

  20. From the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.

  21. The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind.

  22. You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

  23. The Lord is at your right hand.

  24. He will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.

  25. He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses.

  26. He will shatter chiefs over the wide earth.

  27. He will drink from the brook by the way.

  28. Therefore, he will lift up his head.

  29. This is the word of the Lord.

  30. Thanks be to God.

  31. You may be seated.

  32. The Bible says that the grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  33. Let's pray.

  34. Let's pray.

  35. Oh God, we receive this promise.

  36. That the Son is seated at the right hand of the Father.

  37. You've put the rod of the King in his hand.

  38. You've made him a priest forever.

  39. And you are bringing all the nations under his feet.

  40. We pray that the kingdom of Christ will advance.

  41. We pray that he will rule over us with power, Lord.

  42. May you be glorified as your gospel is declared from this psalm.

  43. In Jesus' name we pray.

  44. Amen.

  45. Well, Jack's parents were in debt.

  46. They were farmers in the 1850s.

  47. But Ireland had a famine.

  48. The famous Irish potato famine.

  49. And so, this young man, when he turned 18, he saw really only one viable option for his future.

  50. He would walk to the port.

  51. He would go to the little booth where the man was set up with a legal contract.

  52. And he would talk to them about a future in America.

  53. And they explained to him, you know, this voyage from Ireland all the way to the USA to New York City is very expensive.

  54. You don't have any money.

  55. And we're guaranteeing for you work when you get there.

  56. And you'll have the opportunity to become an American citizen and buy land.

  57. Maybe even claim land for free.

  58. So, Jack signed a paper and he made himself an indentured servant.

  59. He gets a free passage to the new country.

  60. But he has to work as a slave, as an indentured servant for seven years.

  61. And at the end of that time, his hard work earns for him redemption.

  62. He's released of that bondage.

  63. America is defined by an immigrant work ethic.

  64. It always has been.

  65. That's how this nation began.

  66. And that's really what drives this pulse of this strong American economy.

  67. And I think because we are all living in America, we need to be very careful that we have this immigrant work ethic.

  68. And we try to apply that now to our view of the kingdom of Christ.

  69. You and I, we were born in Adam's line.

  70. We were born with this massive debt and we piled on our own debt on top of it.

  71. Just like that immigrant.

  72. But we can easily deceive ourselves to thinking that we can just sell ourselves as a slave to God, maybe.

  73. And work hard in order to determine our own destiny.

  74. And while that can be true in America, land of social mobility and opportunity,

  75. this is not the truth of the kingdom of heaven.

  76. Spiritually, you and I are in debt.

  77. Our first parents are the ones who sold all of us into slavery.

  78. But we are hopelessly cursed under the covenant of works.

  79. And the kingdom of God, you're going to want to say amen after this.

  80. The kingdom of God is not the USA.

  81. Thank you.

  82. You can't buy your way into the kingdom of God.

  83. You don't work for your redemption.

  84. If your good works were what determines your redemption, you and I would be hopeless, right?

  85. Well, one of the glorious pictures, it's really a metaphor for God's eternal decree to save a people.

  86. It comes from David.

  87. And if there's anyone who knows and has put it in the records of history, I cannot save myself.

  88. I am a sinner.

  89. It's King David.

  90. We know David's story.

  91. Praise God it came from him.

  92. If it came from someone like Daniel, you know, or Ezra or someone very admirable, Joseph,

  93. I would have a hard time believing that this could also be for me, but it comes from David.

  94. So let's take comfort in that.

  95. Psalm 110 that we just read is the most quoted or alluded to psalm in all of the New Testament.

  96. So do you see the New Testament authors by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit are pointing back and saying there's significance here.

  97. Pay attention to this.

  98. This is meaningful for the new covenant.

  99. 24 different times in the New Testament is Psalm 110 quoted directly or alluded to.

  100. So beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, the question I invite you to contemplate today is this.

  101. What determines your redemption?

  102. What determines your redemption?

  103. There's not a more important question you could think about for an hour.

  104. Everything's at stake.

  105. What determines to define redemption?

  106. What determines whether you are pardoned from the penalties of God's violated law?

  107. What determines whether you are ransomed from your bondage to sin?

  108. You need to know the answer to this.

  109. So my first point for you is this.

  110. It pleased our triune God to express his eternal decree by way of covenant.

  111. That's the language of our confession of faith.

  112. It pleased the Lord to condescend.

  113. As Ryan put it in Sunday school, it's like God stoops down and he expresses this to us by way of covenant.

  114. So look again at the heading of this psalm.

  115. It's Psalm 110 verse 1.

    Psalms 110:1

  116. We're told it's a psalm of David.

  117. You got to keep the characters correctly in your mind here.

  118. So David's the one writing this.

  119. And the first words say this.

  120. The Lord.

  121. That's Yahweh.

  122. Jehovah.

  123. That's the God of Israel.

  124. So David's beginning this psalm by declaring God's name.

  125. Yahweh.

  126. That's one of the characters.

  127. David's the human author writing it.

  128. Yahweh says to my Lord.

  129. The great King David.

  130. The one who had all these messianic promises attached to his name and his line.

  131. That great King David has a Lord that's other than Yahweh.

  132. What's going on here?

  133. This isn't only complicated or hard for us if we read it like that.

  134. This was hard for the Jews when Christ walked on the earth.

  135. In Matthew 22 verse 42 and in the other gospels, Jesus takes them to this.

    Matthew 22:42

  136. He says, oh teachers of the law, look here.

  137. Whose son is the Christ?

  138. Christ means the anointed one, the promised Messiah.

  139. If then David calls him Lord, how is he David's son?

  140. Jesus is basically saying, oh, you masters of the law, come back and look at Psalm 110.

  141. Look at all of the old covenant.

  142. I want you to study this.

  143. And it silences them.

  144. They don't have any ways of explaining it.

  145. Christ had to be that full revelation to show what's going on.

  146. So who are the parties here?

  147. Well, one is the Lord, Yahweh, God, the God of Israel.

  148. And he says to David's Lord.

  149. And Jesus is revealing in the new covenant, I am David's Lord.

  150. Yes, I am from the line of David.

  151. I am the son of David.

  152. I will sit on the throne of David.

  153. I will be the king over all of God's people.

  154. But I'm also David's Lord.

  155. Outside of time, I'm the one that David got somehow a glimpse.

  156. And this is how that revelation came out on the page.

  157. So we need to now walk through this psalm with that correct New Testament interpretation that Jesus gave us.

  158. We need to read this psalm as father in dialogue with son.

  159. God the father in dialogue with God the son in eternity past.

  160. Before Jesus took on a body.

  161. Are you still with us?

  162. This is so beautiful.

  163. It's so beautiful because this is what Jesus comes to reveal.

  164. So the father says to the son, I will promise you so many things that we're going to walk through.

  165. But you got to ask to, okay, hold on.

  166. Your first point was that it pleased our triune God to express his eternal decree by way of covenant.

  167. I heard father.

  168. I heard son.

  169. Where's the Holy Spirit?

  170. Well, in Sunday school, we're seeing all these other places where we can bring in what God has revealed.

  171. So one example are the servant songs.

  172. One of those is Isaiah 42.1.

  173. God says, behold my servant.

  174. So that's God the father referring to his son as a servant in this covenant.

  175. Whom I uphold.

  176. My chosen one in whom my soul delights.

  177. That's the language of the father describing his son who would become a servant.

  178. And he says, I have put my spirit upon him.

  179. Isaiah 61.1 says, the spirit of the Lord God is upon me.

  180. Now it's the son declaring it.

  181. Because the Lord has anointed me.

  182. So the spirit of God is everywhere.

  183. God is one.

  184. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  185. Covenanting together is the language God has given us to understand what the father promised the son and sealed by the spirit.

  186. Okay, still on this first point.

  187. When did this happen?

  188. Well, Titus chapter 1 verse 2 says,

    Titus 1:2

  189. God who never lies promised the hope of eternal life when?

  190. Before the ages began.

  191. This is when God promises the hope of eternal life.

  192. When does it happen?

  193. 2 Timothy 1.9.

  194. God's own purpose and grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus when?

  195. Before the ages began.

  196. So this inter-Trinitarian covenant, it takes place before the ages began according to scripture.

  197. What can we call this intra-Trinitarian dialogue before time began?

  198. Well, the Bible metaphorically calls this the covenant because he says, look at verse 4 of Psalm 110.

  199. Verse 4 he says,

  200. The Lord has sworn he will not repent.

  201. The Lord makes an oath.

  202. That's covenantal language.

  203. So God calls this an oath-bound promise.

  204. It's a commitment with legal sanctions.

  205. In church history, they've come to describe it as the covenant of redemption.

  206. And it's helpful for us to continue using the same terms that the church has used over the centuries

  207. because we're in dialogue with the larger church.

  208. We're understanding it in the same way that those who have gone before us have.

  209. One definition by J.B. Fesco I think is helpful.

  210. What is the covenant of redemption?

  211. He says it's the pre-temporal, before time, intra-Trinitarian.

  212. There's Father, Son, and Spirit.

  213. Oath-bound promise to redeem a people in Christ.

  214. That's what the covenant of redemption is.

  215. I just want to comfort you.

  216. The fact that God's plan to redeem us is before the ages began.

  217. And it's attached to God Himself, Father, Son, and Spirit.

  218. And God does not change.

  219. God is immutable.

  220. This is grounds for such hope.

  221. Such security.

  222. Thomas Boston, 1800s Scottish pastor, he wrote,

  223. God's decree to redeem you is eternal.

  224. If the divine decrees were not eternal, God would be changeable and imperfect.

  225. So it's impossible.

  226. God has decreed to redeem His people.

  227. And it will happen.

  228. So brothers and sisters, take comfort in this first point.

  229. God decreed to redeem you from all eternity.

  230. And He bound up this promise in Himself.

  231. And God is immutable.

  232. You are secure.

  233. It pleased our triune God to express His eternal decree by way of covenant.

  234. So now I want to walk through what is this covenant.

  235. What did God promise?

  236. What's in it?

  237. This is our second point.

  238. Number two.

  239. In the covenant of redemption, the Father promised the Son victory over His enemies.

  240. Let's see the rest of verse 1 and verse 2.

  241. The Father says to the Son,

  242. You will sit at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

  243. The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion to rule in the midst of your enemies.

  244. So for David, this language is so loaded.

  245. You know, Zion was not even part of the kingdom.

  246. I mean, he had to go as a scrappy soldier with Saul as a disgraceful king before him.

  247. And they had to conquer Zion, take the hill, and establish this as the fortress of God.

  248. And here's where the temple would be built.

  249. So from here we would have the office of king and priest.

  250. And God would rule.

  251. And in David's mind, this is a promise for someone from the line of David to be there,

  252. ruling as a king and a priest.

  253. And that God Himself promises to make all of the enemies,

  254. all those who want to oppose the theocracy of God,

  255. He will make them a footstool under the feet of this kingly priest.

  256. What a glorious promise.

  257. Let's cut this diamond that we have in these verses with more diamond,

  258. more parts of the scripture.

  259. So here we have the Father saying to the Son,

  260. Son, you will go on a mission for me.

  261. The Son says,

  262. Father, I will go to the world to do your will.

  263. Notice how Jesus describes this mission in Matthew 13, verse 38.

    Matthew 13:38

  264. Jesus said,

  265. This field is the world.

  266. The good seed is the sons of the kingdom.

  267. The weeds are the sons of the evil one,

  268. and the enemy who sowed them is the devil.

  269. The harvest is at the end of the age,

  270. and the reapers are the angels.

  271. Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire,

  272. so it will be at the end of the age.

  273. The world is described as this field that belongs to God.

  274. And God's saying,

  275. I'm going to send you, my son,

  276. into this mission field.

  277. In this mission field,

  278. you have your people that will be like the wheat.

  279. You're going to harvest them out of the world.

  280. And there are others that will oppose you.

  281. They will hate you.

  282. And for them,

  283. they will be cut and thrown and burned like the chaff.

  284. This is what God is promising his son.

  285. You will rule over all the world one day.

  286. On that great day of the Lord,

  287. all will look to you as the king.

  288. Some will be a gracious people

  289. that bless you for being their savior.

  290. Others will oppose you to the end,

  291. and they will be crushed under your feet.

  292. This is what God decrees.

  293. Victory for the son over God's enemies.

  294. And Thomas Boston again wrote,

  295. whoever, whatsoever God decrees comes to pass.

  296. It's infallible.

  297. Isaiah 46.10 says that

  298. God declares the end from the beginning,

  299. from ancient times,

  300. things not yet done.

  301. And he says,

  302. my counsel shall stand.

  303. I will do my pleasure.

  304. This is God's decree.

  305. Let's see how the new covenant now

  306. sheds light on this decree.

  307. That the son will rule over all of God's enemies.

  308. Hebrews 10.13 says that

  309. our Lord Jesus Christ,

  310. having crushed the serpent's head on the cross,

  311. he ascended.

  312. He went up.

  313. And he is waiting until his enemies

  314. should be made a footstool at his feet.

  315. So the son now,

  316. as the kingdom advances on earth,

  317. is waiting.

  318. And the father is the one doing the work

  319. by the ministry of the spirit.

  320. Through the church,

  321. his kingdom is extending.

  322. Well, who are the enemies of God?

  323. Who are these enemies that will be brought low

  324. before the feet of the king?

  325. Romans 5.10 says that

  326. while we, to the church,

  327. while we church,

  328. were enemies of God,

  329. we were reconciled to God

  330. by the death of his son.

  331. He's conquered us.

  332. He brings us now in humility before his feet.

  333. His death purchased us

  334. to belong to him as his possession

  335. and him as our king.

  336. The last one on this point is

  337. Corinthians 15.25-26.

  338. Now the church,

  339. having been brought under the kingdom of Christ,

  340. being at his feet,

  341. belonging to him,

  342. Christ will reign

  343. until he has put his enemies under his feet.

  344. And the last enemy to be destroyed is death.

  345. So we reign with Christ in a spiritual sense now,

  346. but we will die.

  347. We still long for that great day

  348. when there will be no more death and dying.

  349. But in the meantime,

  350. his kingdom is real.

  351. It's inaugurated spiritually.

  352. So we describe the victory of Christ

  353. as an already spiritual victory,

  354. though it's not yet consummated.

  355. That great day is still coming

  356. and we long for that day.

  357. So in the covenant of redemption,

  358. the father promised the son

  359. victory over all of his enemies.

  360. Number three,

  361. in the covenant of redemption,

  362. the father promised his son

  363. a people that will love him.

  364. In the covenant of redemption,

  365. the father promised his son

  366. a people that will love him.

  367. Look at verse three,

  368. Psalm 110 verse three.

  369. The father says,

  370. thy people, son,

  371. shall be willing in the day of thy power,

  372. in the beauties of holiness,

  373. from the womb of the morning,

  374. for thou hast the dew of thy youth.

  375. Now there's some Hebrew poetry here.

  376. The womb of the morning,

  377. the very beginning of the day.

  378. It's describing that great day of the Lord.

  379. From the very beginning,

  380. you will be like the dew.

  381. You will be like that transparent,

  382. clear, refreshing, pure light

  383. that comes from heaven,

  384. refreshed, preserved.

  385. The son will take on a flesh,

  386. but he'll be an eternal,

  387. glorified king forever.

  388. He will be beautiful.

  389. And his people will behold his glory.

  390. The decree of our Lord God here,

  391. it is just like that dew.

  392. It's like the womb of the morning.

  393. God's decree is light.

  394. It's most pure.

  395. 1 John 1 says that God is light

  396. and in him there is no darkness at all.

  397. So here in this,

  398. in this intra-Trinitarian covenant,

  399. God the Father is the covenant Lord.

  400. And he's speaking to his son

  401. who willingly takes the position

  402. in this covenant to redeem

  403. as the vassal servant.

  404. The father is the Lord,

  405. the son is here to serve

  406. and do what the father tells him.

  407. The reason I emphasize that

  408. is because what does that make us?

  409. These are the parties of this covenant of redemption,

  410. father and son,

  411. sealed by the spirit.

  412. What about us?

  413. How do we fit into the story?

  414. Verse 3 says that

  415. your people will be willing

  416. on the day of your power.

  417. God the Father will give to the son

  418. a people as a reward.

  419. Not robots,

  420. not pre-programmed,

  421. you know,

  422. vessels that are just going to be there

  423. because they had to.

  424. No, the father promises

  425. to give the son

  426. a people who love him,

  427. who willingly offer themselves

  428. like volunteer soldiers.

  429. This is good news, folks.

  430. We are the reward in this covenant.

  431. We are not the servants.

  432. Christ became the servant

  433. and the father gives his people

  434. to his son

  435. as a reward for his obedience.

  436. In a sense,

  437. it's not even about us.

  438. Do you see that?

  439. This is between father and son

  440. because God is love.

  441. I'm trying to distinguish as well

  442. the covenant of redemption

  443. from the covenant of grace.

  444. Now in the covenant of grace,

  445. Jesus Christ is Lord.

  446. Lord,

  447. well, what does that make us?

  448. We're his servants.

  449. But we're willing servants.

  450. We're joyful.

  451. We're safe sinners.

  452. Of course we want to serve

  453. this good king.

  454. But in the covenant of redemption,

  455. the father is the Lord

  456. and the son is the servant.

  457. Second London Confession says,

  458. the father gave the son

  459. a people in eternity

  460. whom in time,

  461. that means in history,

  462. the son redeemed.

  463. And those he redeemed,

  464. he calls.

  465. Those he calls,

  466. he justifies.

  467. Those he justifies,

  468. he sanctifies.

  469. And those he sanctifies,

  470. he will one day glorify.

  471. Praise God for this promise.

  472. It's like the son says,

  473. father,

  474. I want,

  475. I want to be a king

  476. over a people

  477. that will be joyful

  478. to join my army

  479. and to fight

  480. and to follow me

  481. and march with me.

  482. I want a people

  483. that can share

  484. in our love.

  485. I want the oppressed

  486. of this world

  487. to feel like

  488. they are adopted.

  489. They belong to us.

  490. They belong to God.

  491. In Isaiah 42,

  492. 1,

  493. we get this insight.

  494. The servant,

  495. the servant,

  496. the son,

  497. he will bring forth

  498. justice to the nations.

  499. Isaiah 61,

    Isaiah 61:1

  500. verse 1 says,

  501. he will bring good news

  502. to the poor.

  503. The father has sent the son

  504. to bind up the brokenhearted,

  505. to proclaim liberty

  506. to the captives

  507. and to open the prison

  508. for those who are bound.

  509. The father says to his son,

  510. oh son,

  511. your people will see

  512. the beauty of your holiness

  513. as their savior.

  514. Their hearts will ache for you.

  515. In Ephesians 1,

  516. 4,

  517. we're told that

  518. the father chose us,

  519. Christians,

  520. the father chose you

  521. in Christ

  522. before the foundation

  523. of the world

  524. that we should be holy

  525. and blameless

  526. before him.

  527. He did this in love.

  528. My point was that

  529. in the covenant of redemption,

  530. the father promised the son

  531. a people

  532. that will love him.

  533. You want to be this people.

  534. This is who we want to be.

  535. And here's the test.

  536. Do you love the son?

  537. Do you love him?

  538. Then you belong to him

  539. because the father

  540. gave you to his son.

  541. We're still tempted

  542. to think like that

  543. immigrant work ethic

  544. where I can sell myself

  545. and work for God

  546. and earn his love.

  547. Augustine confessed,

  548. the confession of evil works

  549. is the first beginning

  550. of good works.

  551. Grace is given

  552. not because we have done

  553. good works,

  554. but in order

  555. that we may be able

  556. to do them.

  557. See,

  558. under the covenant of works,

  559. we were unwilling

  560. to surrender to God.

  561. Under the curses

  562. of the covenant of works,

  563. we are proud

  564. and cold-hearted.

  565. And we love sin.

  566. But God makes us willing.

  567. He makes us eager

  568. to confess our sin

  569. and depend on God

  570. as our Savior.

  571. So that's the promise

  572. for you today.

  573. God makes you,

  574. whom Jesus Christ

  575. has redeemed,

  576. willing to follow him.

  577. If you ever question

  578. your salvation,

  579. be reminded of that question.

  580. I willingly follow Christ,

  581. joyfully.

  582. Who else could I follow?

  583. Because in the covenant

  584. of redemption,

  585. the Father promised his Son

  586. a people that will love him.

  587. Praise God.

  588. Fourth point here

  589. is that the covenant

  590. of redemption,

  591. it was a covenant

  592. of works for the Son.

  593. What determines

  594. your redemption?

  595. You can't work for it.

  596. Well, guess what?

  597. Someone else had to.

  598. Therefore,

  599. the covenant of redemption,

  600. it was a covenant

  601. of works for the Son.

  602. Notice what God says

  603. here in verse 4.

  604. The Lord has sworn

  605. and will not repent.

  606. Thou art a priest forever

  607. after the order

  608. of Melchizedek.

  609. The Father says,

  610. Son,

  611. you see the rewards

  612. I promise to give you.

  613. I promise to make

  614. all the nations,

  615. all your enemies

  616. will come and bow

  617. at your feet.

  618. But there's a problem.

  619. God is holy.

  620. God is holy.

  621. And this people

  622. I'm going to give you,

  623. they are not holy.

  624. They need a priest.

  625. These people need

  626. a mediator.

  627. And it can't be someone

  628. from this cursed line.

  629. It can't just be a Levite

  630. like every other priest.

  631. It cannot be a man

  632. to stand between God and man.

  633. It must be you,

  634. God the Son.

  635. And you're not only

  636. going to be a priest,

  637. you're going to be

  638. a kingly priest.

  639. It's different than

  640. the system that Israel knows.

  641. You will be a kingly priest

  642. that ransoms them.

  643. The Father says,

  644. Son,

  645. your work in this covenant

  646. is not only to be a priest.

  647. Your work is to be

  648. the sacrifice as well.

  649. We get a hint

  650. at the Son's response

  651. in Isaiah 52, 13.

  652. The Father says,

  653. Behold,

  654. my servant,

  655. he's speaking of his own son,

  656. my servant

  657. shall sprinkle

  658. many nations.

  659. That's the work

  660. I need my servant,

  661. my son,

  662. to go do.

  663. And the Son says

  664. in the words of Isaiah 50,

  665. 6 and 7,

  666. Father,

  667. I will give my back

  668. to those who strike.

  669. I will give my cheek

  670. to those who pull out

  671. the beard.

  672. I will not hide my face

  673. from disgrace

  674. and spitting.

  675. Father,

  676. I will fulfill the mission,

  677. the work you give me

  678. in this covenant.

  679. And I will do this

  680. trusting your word.

  681. Also from Isaiah 50.

  682. Picture Jesus

  683. praying this to the Father.

  684. Isaiah 50, verse 7.

    Isaiah 50:7

  685. Oh Lord God,

  686. you help me.

  687. Therefore,

  688. I will not be disgraced.

  689. Therefore,

  690. I will set my face

  691. like a flint.

  692. I know that I shall

  693. not be put to shame.

  694. It's the Father

  695. who sustains Him.

  696. This was decreed

  697. before the ages began.

  698. J.C. Ryle

  699. pointed this out.

  700. All of Christ's sufferings

  701. on the cross

  702. were foreordained.

  703. They did not come

  704. on Him by chance

  705. or by accident.

  706. They were all planned,

  707. counseled,

  708. determined from

  709. all eternity.

  710. The cross

  711. was foreseen

  712. in all the provisions

  713. of the Trinity

  714. for the salvation

  715. of sinners.

  716. God set up

  717. the cross

  718. from everlasting.

  719. In the words of

  720. Hebrews 12, 2,

  721. it's like the Son says,

  722. Father,

  723. it's for the joy

  724. that you

  725. have set before me

  726. that I will

  727. endure the cross

  728. and I will despise

  729. the shame

  730. and I will do it

  731. for that people

  732. you promised me.

  733. The Son will obey

  734. His Father

  735. for you, church.

  736. Thomas Boston,

  737. God's decree

  738. to redeem you

  739. is most wise.

  740. God says

  741. He will not repent

  742. of it.

  743. Verse 4,

  744. God sees all the things

  745. together and at once.

  746. Nothing God decrees

  747. could ever

  748. have been

  749. undermined.

  750. Romans 11, 33

  751. says,

  752. Oh, the depths

  753. of the riches

  754. and the wisdom

  755. and the knowledge

  756. of God.

  757. This is the only

  758. response we can

  759. come up with.

  760. How unsearchable

  761. are God's judgments

  762. and how inscrutable

  763. are God's ways.

  764. Praise God.

  765. The covenant

  766. of redemption,

  767. it was a covenant

  768. of works

  769. for the Son.

  770. It was His work

  771. that determines

  772. your redemption.

  773. My fifth point

  774. here is that

  775. after fulfilling

  776. the covenant

  777. of redemption,

  778. the incarnate Son

  779. will then be glorified

  780. as the ruler

  781. of the world.

  782. After fulfilling

  783. the covenant

  784. of redemption,

  785. the incarnate Son

  786. now taken on flesh,

  787. He will be glorified

  788. forever

  789. as the ruler

  790. of the world.

  791. This is what is

  792. promised in verse 5

  793. and verse 6.

  794. The Lord at that

  795. right hand

  796. shall strike

  797. through the kings

  798. in the day

  799. of His wrath.

  800. He shall judge

  801. among the heathen.

  802. He shall fill

  803. the places

  804. with dead bodies.

  805. He shall wound

  806. the heads

  807. over many countries.

  808. This is the prophetic

  809. idiom of David,

  810. the warrior shepherd.

  811. David had seen

  812. a bloody battlefield.

  813. He'd seen crushed heads.

  814. He'd seen a king

  815. on his horse

  816. splattered in blood,

  817. galloping around,

  818. celebrating a victory

  819. of battle.

  820. That's the image

  821. David gives

  822. the people of God

  823. inspired by the Holy Spirit.

  824. This is Christ

  825. in His glorified state.

  826. It's like the Father

  827. is promising the Son,

  828. Son, you will suffer.

  829. You will be that priest

  830. from this line of priests

  831. that no one can even

  832. have a comparison to

  833. that will endure forever.

  834. You will suffer

  835. as the sacrifice.

  836. But Son,

  837. you will be victorious.

  838. I will bring your enemies

  839. at your footstool.

  840. You set up my right hand

  841. and I will strike

  842. through the kings

  843. on your day,

  844. on your great day,

  845. the day of God's wrath.

  846. You will be victorious

  847. in battle.

  848. Your kingdom,

  849. none can touch.

  850. All creatures

  851. that oppose the triune God

  852. will be slain.

  853. We will pour out

  854. our wrath

  855. on those who abuse

  856. your bride.

  857. Our zeal

  858. for holiness

  859. will be unleashed.

  860. unleashed.

  861. The whole world

  862. will see the glory

  863. of God.

  864. You will be glorified

  865. and our justice

  866. will be as magnificent

  867. as our grace.

  868. That's the image

  869. of Jesus Christ

  870. on His great day,

  871. guaranteed by the Father Himself,

  872. sealed by the Spirit.

  873. It will come to pass.

  874. Zechariah 6.13 says,

  875. It is He

  876. who shall build

  877. the temple of the Lord.

  878. That's the role

  879. of the priest

  880. in the order of Melchizedek.

  881. This priest

  882. that will rule

  883. from God's kingdom

  884. over all the world.

  885. But not only

  886. will He build

  887. His temple

  888. as a priest,

  889. He shall be

  890. the bearer

  891. of royal honor.

  892. He will also be a king.

  893. And He shall sit

  894. and rule

  895. on His throne.

  896. And there shall be

  897. a priest

  898. on the throne.

  899. The two offices

  900. are combined.

  901. The king

  902. is a priest.

  903. And the priest

  904. is a king.

  905. And it's all

  906. in the one person

  907. of the Son.

  908. And the council

  909. of peace

  910. shall be between

  911. them both.

  912. This is what God

  913. decrees for His Son.

  914. You will suffer,

  915. but you will be victorious.

  916. And from the kingdom

  917. of heaven,

  918. you will rule

  919. over all the world

  920. as the mediating priest

  921. and also as the king,

  922. ruling over the hearts

  923. of your people.

  924. And those people,

  925. you will see them

  926. be persecuted

  927. and suffer.

  928. We'll use that

  929. to sanctify them.

  930. And one day

  931. in the great day

  932. of the Lord,

  933. you will return

  934. in judgment

  935. and you will make

  936. all things right.

  937. This is God's decree

  938. before eternity began.

  939. Thomas Boston wrote,

  940. the decrees of God

  941. to redeem

  942. His people

  943. are free.

  944. God's covenant

  945. of redemption

  946. depends on

  947. no other

  948. but all

  949. flowing from

  950. mere pleasure,

  951. the mere pleasure

  952. of God's own will.

  953. God has made

  954. no decrees

  955. suspended

  956. on any condition

  957. besides Himself.

  958. There is nothing

  959. man can come up with

  960. to stop the kingdom

  961. of Christ

  962. from coming in power.

  963. There is nothing

  964. that we can do

  965. to become unredeemed.

  966. We will be willing,

  967. willing servants,

  968. willing followers

  969. of King Jesus.

  970. We will depend on Him

  971. as our priest

  972. mediating for us,

  973. interceding for us,

  974. daily

  975. because God decreed

  976. that this would happen.

  977. We cannot undo it.

  978. There is no more comfort

  979. than we could have

  980. than trusting in this

  981. eternal decree of God.

  982. In that office

  983. of being a royal priesthood,

  984. that is who Christ is.

  985. That is what we are told

  986. the church becomes

  987. in 1 Peter 2.9.

  988. You church,

  989. you are a chosen race,

  990. a royal priesthood,

  991. a holy nation,

  992. a people

  993. for His own possession

  994. that you may proclaim

  995. the excellencies of Him

  996. who called you

  997. out of darkness

  998. into His marvelous light.

  999. He is the one

  1000. who determines

  1001. our redemption.

  1002. My sixth observation here

  1003. is this,

  1004. that in the covenant

  1005. of redemption,

  1006. the Father promises

  1007. refreshment

  1008. and honor

  1009. to His obedient Son.

  1010. In the covenant

  1011. of redemption,

  1012. in Psalm 110,

1013. that is the last thought

  1014. we are left with.

  1015. The Father promises

  1016. His Son

  1017. refreshment

  1018. and honor

  1019. for His obedience.

  1020. We are told

  1021. in verse 7,

  1022. He shall drink

  1023. of the brook

  1024. by the way.

  1025. Well, there is David

  1026. on the desert plains

  1027. of Israel

  1028. going days and days

  1029. without finding

  1030. fresh water.

  1031. Maybe He had some

  1032. on Him

  1033. or a cistern,

  1034. but there is living

  1035. waters flowing now

  1036. and the King

  1037. can take a breather.

  1038. On His way,

  1039. He will refresh Himself.

  1040. The Father is

  1041. encouraging His Son

  1042. who will gladly

  1043. obey His Father.

  1044. Son,

  1045. when you finish

1046. the work I gave you

1047. to do in this mission,

  1048. you will rest

  1049. and drink.

  1050. Just as God

  1051. finished His work

  1052. of creation

  1053. and rested

  1054. as ruler

  1055. with His world

  1056. as His footstool.

  1057. Christ will say,

  1058. it is finished.

  1059. He will be ascended

  1060. at the right hand

  1061. of the Father

  1062. and He will rest

  1063. as a priest.

  1064. His work is finished

  1065. and the world

  1066. is His footstool.

1067. You will have a body,

  1068. Son.

  1069. You will be raised

  1070. from the dead.

  1071. You will be seated

  1072. at My right hand

  1073. where there is fullness

  1074. of joy

  1075. and pleasures

  1076. forevermore.

  1077. And you will enjoy

  1078. refreshments

  1079. from the river

  1080. of divine pleasures.

  1081. this is God's decree

  1082. for His Son.

  1083. The Son

  1084. knew this joy

  1085. of one day

  1086. having His bride

  1087. with Him

  1088. in His Father's palace.

  1089. This was the decree

  1090. of God

  1091. to accomplish it.

  1092. Thomas Boston wrote,

  1093. the decrees

  1094. of God are constant

1095. and He by no means

  1096. alters His purpose

  1097. as men do.

  1098. God has sworn

  1099. to save you

1100. in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1101. Christ.

  1102. The Father knows,

  1103. My Son,

  1104. He shall do this.

  1105. My Son shall succeed.

  1106. My Son shall succeed

  1107. because I have decreed

  1108. this mission for Him

1109. and my mission for Him

  1110. in my eternal decree

  1111. is unchangeable.

  1112. And then we're told

  1113. in verse 7,

  1114. I shall lift,

  1115. I'm sorry,

1116. He shall lift up my head.

1117. So that's the last promise.

  1118. The Father says,

1119. your head will be bowed low,

  1120. fulfilling this mission

  1121. as a servant,

1122. but we will lift up

1123. the head of the King

  1124. over all the nations.

  1125. In John 19,

    John 19:30

  1126. verse 30,

  1127. Jesus said,

  1128. it is finished

1129. and He bowed His head

1130. and He gave up His spirit,

  1131. trusting,

  1132. verse 7 of Psalm 110,

  1133. that His head

1134. shall be lifted up again.

  1135. The Father promised this

1136. and nothing that the Lord

  1137. endured was a surprise.

1138. J.C. Riles again pointed out,

1139. not one throb of pain

  1140. did Jesus feel,

1141. not one precious drop of blood

  1142. did Jesus shed,

  1143. which had not been

  1144. appointed long ago.

  1145. Infinite wisdom planned

  1146. that redemption

1147. should be by the cross.

  1148. And infinite wisdom

  1149. brought Jesus

1150. to the cross in due time.

  1151. Christ was crucified

  1152. by God's determinate

  1153. eternal counsel.

1154. Well, we saw last time

  1155. how we were born

  1156. east of Eden

  1157. under the covenant

  1158. of works with Adam.

  1159. Adam sold your freedom

1160. and in bondage to sin

1161. we piled on our own sins

  1162. as well.

1163. And no matter how hard

1164. and how long we work

  1165. for our own redemption,

  1166. it's a debt

1167. that we simply cannot pay off.

  1168. We're told in Philippians 2

1169. that our Lord Jesus Christ

  1170. became the Father's servant.

  1171. He made himself low.

  1172. He lived on earth

  1173. under his own law.

1174. It's the law that binds you and me.

1175. And he did this to redeem you,

  1176. his people.

1177. I love how this one musician put it.

  1178. He said,

1179. As the people of God,

1180. all we can do now

1181. is sing a new song

  1182. to the Lord.

  1183. May tongues be loosed

  1184. and praised

  1185. and sing the triumph

  1186. of our King

  1187. who ransomed Adam's race.

  1188. He trampled down

  1189. the canceled sin.

  1190. He rent the veil

  1191. and saved.

  1192. Became the record

  1193. of our debt

  1194. and triumphed

  1195. or the grave.

  1196. What determines

  1197. your redemption?

  1198. God the Father,

  1199. God the Son,

  1200. God the Holy Spirit,

  1201. covenanted before

  1202. he even created

  1203. time and space

  1204. to redeem you

  1205. by the work

  1206. of Jesus Christ.

  1207. All glory

  1208. be to God.

  1209. Let's pray.

  1210. Amen.

  1211. Amen.

  1212. Amen.

  1213. Amen.

  1214. Amen.

  1215. Amen.

  1216. Amen.

  1217. Amen.

  1218. Amen.

  1219. Amen.

  1220. Amen.

  1221. Amen.

  1222. Amen.

  1223. Amen.

  1224. Amen.

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Amen.

  1227. Amen.

  1228. Amen.

  1229. Amen.

  1230. Amen.

  1231. Amen.

  1232. Amen.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Amen.

  1235. Amen.

  1236. Amen.
