  1. Genesis 6, starting at verse 5.

  2. Verse 8 says,

  3. Verse 10.

  4. Verse 17.

  5. There it is.

  6. Now turn to chapter 7, starting at verse 11.

  7. Genesis 7, 11 says,

  8. In the 600th year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the 17th day of the month,

  9. on that day, all the fountains of the great deep burst forth,

  10. and the windows of the heavens were opened,

  11. and rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.

  12. On the very same day, Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth,

  13. and Noah's wife, and the three wives of the sons with them,

  14. entered the ark.

  15. They and every beast according to its kind,

  16. and all the livestock according to their kinds,

  17. and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth according to its kind,

  18. and every bird according to its kind,

  19. every winged creature.

  20. They went into the ark with Noah,

  21. two and two,

  22. of all flesh, in which there was the breath of life.

  23. And those that entered, male and female, of all flesh,

  24. went in as God had commanded them,

  25. and the Lord shut them in.

  26. This is the word of God.

  27. Thanks be to God.

  28. You may be seated.

  29. Let's pray.

  30. Father, thank you for how you have unveiled yourself to us.

  31. You've unveiled the God who saves.

  32. Thank you for your word, Lord.

  33. How you minister to your word through the plain reading

  34. to your people,

  35. every true believer in whom the Holy Spirit dwells.

  36. Lord, we acknowledge this is a mystery in its foolishness

  37. to those who don't know you.

  38. But those who have your Holy Spirit within us,

  39. it bears witness.

  40. This is the truth,

  41. that Jesus Christ came to save sinners like us.

  42. Thank you for this glorious type,

  43. this shadow that we can study today, Lord.

  44. We pray that you will minister your grace

  45. to your people today through this message.

  46. We ask this for the glory of King Jesus in our midst.

  47. Amen.

  48. Here's an eyewitness account

  49. of a regional local flood.

  50. He wrote,

  51. The water rose so fast,

  52. we had to scramble upstairs from the first floor.

  53. Jim remembered,

  54. the wave of death came right behind us,

  55. waltzing up the stairs like it owned the place,

  56. and quick as a wink,

  57. got to swirling around our ankles on the second floor.

  58. Jim says,

  59. It was my fault that we stayed.

  60. They had just bought a brand new home.

  61. It was made of brick,

  62. and they had put brand new shingles on the roof.

  63. But Hurricane Katrina,

  64. it caused a canal breach on 23 different spots

  65. that made the waters flood 80% of the city of New Orleans.

  66. Some parts were buried in 15 feet of water.

  67. So kids, that basketball hoop is 10 feet,

  68. five more feet above that.

  69. 1,800 deaths,

  70. 78,000 people displaced by one regional flood.

  71. And Jim said,

  72. It was my fault that my family and I got trapped there.

  73. He thought he had a good refuge.

  74. And it probably was better than most.

  75. But when the floods came,

  76. no man-built refuge was enough.

  77. It's hard for us to fathom

  78. this entire earth buried in the waters

  79. that came from the deep as well as from the sky.

  80. But that's what the Bible tells us happened.

  81. A worldwide flood

  82. in which people like you and me

  83. were living their lives like Jim,

  84. and they were caught without a refuge.

  85. So that's my question for each one today.

  86. Do you have a refuge?

  87. There's only one refuge for you,

  88. for your body and your soul.

  89. It's revealed in all of the Bible

  90. by further steps.

  91. So from this passage,

  92. I want to try to highlight four covenantal observations.

  93. Number one is this.

  94. God is the covenant Lord

  95. ruling over all of his creation.

  96. He is the holy covenant Lord.

  97. He is the holy covenant Lord

  98. who rules over the entire world.

  99. And as the Lord over his creation,

  100. he sees each person's natural evil

  101. inside and out.

  102. look again with me at verse five,

  103. Genesis chapter six,

  104. verse five,

  105. God observed that the wickedness of man was great.

  106. Man's evil deeds had multiplied

  107. in the whole earth.

  108. This speaks to the intensity of man's sin.

  109. See,

  110. it's one thing if man uses evil words,

  111. but we read that these were the deeds of men.

  112. It was blatant action.

  113. The deeds were evil and wicked

  114. because all of mankind had become so corrupt.

  115. To describe this a bit further with biblical language,

  116. we read in Galatians 5,

  117. 19,

  118. that the works of the flesh include sexual immorality,

  119. impurity,

  120. sensuality,

  121. idolatry,

  122. sorcery,

  123. enmity,

  124. strife,

  125. jealousy,

  126. fits of anger,

  127. rivalries,

  128. dissensions,

  129. divisions,

  130. envy,

  131. drunkenness,

  132. orgies,

  133. and worse.

  134. Some of you are thinking,

  135. well,

  136. that describes the folks I just worked with all week.

  137. It's not only the intensity of sin that's highlighted,

  138. it's also the quantity.

  139. It's that evil deeds by wicked men

  140. had multiplied to the point that the whole earth

  141. was filled with nothing but that.

  142. The Bible says it was violent.

  143. violent.

  144. And there is the Lord,

  145. the covenant Lord over all his creation.

  146. Verse five,

  147. he saw that every imagination of the thoughts of man's heart was only evil.

  148. continually.

  149. God saw man's slavery to sin.

  150. He saw what's inside man and described it as only evil.

  151. Your soul is addicted to wickedness,

  152. not just some of the time or most of the time.

  153. Your natural state is to be addicted to evil continuously all of the time.

  154. John Calvin described this as the natural hereditary depravity of all of mankind.

  155. It's a corruption of our nature that is diffused into all parts of your being.

  156. I had to look up in the dictionary,

  157. what does diffused really mean?

  158. You got like a diffuser of puts oils mixed in with the air,

  159. or sometimes you will try to take oil and you'll diffuse a aroma into it.

  160. And it means that one element is so intermingled with another that it takes it over,

  161. even on an atomic level.

  162. So this is describing the root of man's sin.

  163. God sees man's insides.

  164. It's the imagination.

  165. It's man's thoughts.

  166. God sees man's heart.

  167. God sees man's heart.

  168. Romans 1.30 describes this as hating God,

  169. being a slanderer out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.

  170. Spiritual rebellion.

  171. It's to be insolent, haughty, boastful, and inventors of evil.

  172. 1 Corinthians 6, verse 11.

    1 Corinthians 6:11

  173. Paul writes to the church, people like you and me,

  174. so were you.

  175. And so natural sinners cannot inherit the kingdom of God.

  176. It's impossible to have peace with God.

  177. What that means is that as God is Lord over the whole creation,

  178. and his new kingdom of heaven and earth is coming,

  179. there will be no place for sinners.

  180. His rule will be established over all creation.

  181. Where will you be in your natural state?

  182. In our natural state, you and me would be homeless

  183. when the new heavens and the new earth are ushered in,

  184. because God is the covenant Lord over all his creation,

  185. and he sees you and me, each of us, in our natural condition.

  186. And he sees that we are evil inside and out.

  187. You can't be a Christian unless you say, that was me.

  188. And my heart is still bent in that direction,

  189. unless the spirit keeps me close to Christ.

  190. Here's our second covenantal observation.

  191. The Lord's wrath burns against sin because he is good,

  192. and because he is just, he must punish evil.

  193. The Lord's wrath, his holy righteous anger,

  194. burns against sin because he is good.

  195. How could it not?

  196. And because God is just and powerful,

  197. he must punish evil.

  198. The language to describe this to us,

  199. it's using something we can relate to.

  200. Look at verse 6.

  201. God saw the world that way, and God repented.

  202. The King James says,

  203. what he saw repented the Lord,

  204. that he had made man on the earth.

  205. Verse 6 says,

  206. it grieved him, God, at his heart.

  207. Well, we know from all of Scripture that God is spirit.

  208. God is not man.

  209. So God does not have physical eyes,

  210. but the language is that God saw.

  211. God does not have a heart like a man does,

  212. but yet God was grieved at his heart.

  213. That's our prophetic idiom from Moses' pen.

  214. We know that the eternal decree of God is immutable.

  215. It does not change.

  216. But yet, God's wrath against sin is so strong,

  217. the Scripture describes it as God repenting of what he had made.

  218. It's like God says,

  219. O creation, I am holy,

  220. and I made all my creation very good for my glory.

  221. But man's slavery to sin and Satan has ruined my world.

  222. And because he sits on the throne as Lord over his creation,

  223. the holy God cannot tolerate evil without responding.

  224. He is not distant.

  225. Our God is active in this world.

  226. And the just God cannot leave sin unpunished,

  227. or he would no longer be just.

  228. The God who created order, peace, and beauty

  229. won't leave his creation in chaos forever.

  230. He rules over it.

  231. It's his.

  232. He won't leave us to ruin ourselves.

  233. He won't leave his image bearers to self-destroy through violence forever.

  234. So in verse 7, the Lord said,

  235. I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth,

  236. both man and the beast and the creeping thing and the fowl of the air.

  237. See, the animals were not God's image bearers,

  238. but they are being affected by man's sin.

  239. Because the second commandment is a prohibition

  240. against turning creaturely things into gods

  241. or worshiping something creaturely,

  242. we can infer that before the flood, people had done just that.

  243. That's what Paul roars about in Romans 1 and 2 as well.

  244. So the Lord will destroy both man and beast.

  245. You can almost imagine the type of idols they came up with,

  246. creeping things, the fowls of the air,

  247. because it grieves me that I have made them.

  248. God is all-powerful, and God is good.

  249. And so God must unleash his wrath to punish evil.

  250. We read in verse 11 that the earth was corrupt before God.

  251. The earth was filled with violence,

  252. and God looked upon the earth, and behold,

  253. he saw that it was all corrupt,

  254. for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

  255. It's a real horror to think of what we deserve

  256. if we were left to ourselves.

  257. We need to understand that the wrath of God

  258. cannot let evil go unpunished.

  259. Eric Alexander pointed out that the real horror

  260. of being outside of Christ

  261. is that there is no other shelter

  262. from God's wrath.

  263. The Lord, ruling over his creation,

  264. because he is good,

  265. he must pour out his wrath to punish sin,

  266. and because he is just, he must punish evil.

  267. But remember the promise.

  268. The seed of Eve will destroy the Satan,

  269. the serpent's head, crush it.

  270. How will the Lord be faithful to his promise,

  271. and also be faithful to being just,

  272. and good, and punish evil?

  273. How will he do this?

  274. And this is our third observation,

  275. that the Lord,

  276. he is faithful to his covenant of grace,

  277. and he provides sinners a refuge for salvation.

  278. Yes, the Lord is faithful to his covenant of grace,

  279. and he provides sinners with a refuge for salvation.

  280. In verse 13, we read that God said,

  281. the end of all flesh is before me,

  282. because the earth is filled with violence.

  283. Behold, I will destroy wicked mankind

  284. along with the earth.

  285. So God will do this.

  286. But we read in verse 8,

  287. that Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

  288. Let's define this term.

  289. First of all, grace is different than mercy.

  290. Mercy is to withhold deserved punishment.

  291. And God is merciless against sin.

  292. But yet we read that those same eyes,

  293. so to speak,

  294. the eyes of God that saw the wickedness of Noah's heart,

  295. mind, imagination, and deeds,

  296. that same God looked graciously at Noah.

  297. Now grace,

  298. it not only withholds punishment,

  299. like mercy does,

  300. but grace also generously blesses.

  301. Grace is better than unmerited favor.

  302. Unmerited favor would be like this.

  303. Picture a teenager who lives on the street,

  304. and he's always getting into trouble.

  305. And then a man gets out of his car

  306. and sees that homeless teenage troublemaker,

  307. feels pity for him,

  308. and gives him a crisp $100 bill.

  309. That would be unmerited favor.

  310. But grace is so much more than just that.

  311. Grace is giving favor to one who has demerited it.

  312. So grace, in the biblical sense,

  313. is if that teenager saw that same man,

  314. picked up a big rock,

  315. smashed his windshield,

  316. when the guy gets out of his car,

  317. kicks him in the shin,

  318. spits in his face,

  319. gives him the middle finger.

  320. That man doesn't reach for his wallet.

  321. He takes that young man to the courthouse

  322. and adopts him.

  323. You're going to be my son,

  324. and I'm going to disciple you

  325. and show you unconditional love.

  326. That's grace.

  327. It's favor,

  328. great favor and blessing

  329. to one who has demerited it.

  330. So Noah,

  331. he found grace in God's eyes.

  332. Grace is when God shows favor

  333. to a man like Noah,

  334. or like you and me,

  335. who have demerited it.

  336. See, God showed favor to Adam and Eve

  337. and Noah,

  338. even though they were rebels,

  339. and every thought of their mind

  340. was bent toward evil always.

  341. But God is faithful

  342. to his covenant of grace.

  343. Look at verse 18.

  344. God says to Noah,

  345. with you I will establish my covenant,

  346. and you shall come into the ark,

  347. you and your sons and your wife

  348. and the sons' wives with you.

  349. Isn't that a great promise?

  350. God did not find Noah gracious.

  351. Noah deserved God's wrath,

  352. just like everyone else,

  353. just like we do.

  354. But Noah received God's favor.

  355. Where did God find this grace?

  356. God found grace for a man like Noah

  357. in himself.

  358. God graciously elected,

  359. pardoned,

  360. accepted,

  361. and preserved Noah

  362. because he's faithful

  363. to his covenant of grace.

  364. Do you see the work

  365. of the covenant of grace

  366. being unveiled

  367. even in this ancient story?

  368. In verse 18,

  369. Noah gets the promise

  370. that you shall come into the ark.

  371. Noah, do you have faith

  372. in this promise?

  373. I will save you by my grace.

  374. Well, we see Noah's faith,

  375. in his response.

  376. His response was simple,

  377. to believe and obey.

  378. We read in Hebrews 11, 7,

  379. that by faith,

  380. Noah, when warned,

  381. in holy fear,

  382. he built an ark,

  383. and God saved his family.

  384. By faith, Noah condemned the world

  385. and was heir of righteousness

  386. that keeps with faith.

  387. And this is because the Lord

  388. is faithful to his covenant of grace

  389. and he provides sinners

  390. like Noah,

  391. like you and me,

  392. a refuge for salvation.

  393. The fourth covenant observation

  394. is this.

  395. The Lord patiently calls

  396. all covenant breakers

  397. to find safety

  398. in his provided refuge.

  399. The ark was not just for Noah,

  400. it was for whoever

  401. would repent and believe.

  402. The Lord patiently calls

  403. covenant breakers

  404. to find safety

  405. in the refuge

  406. that he has provided.

  407. Through Noah,

  408. God preached free salvation

  409. to the whole evil world.

  410. We read in 2 Peter 2, 5,

  411. that Noah was a preacher

  412. of righteousness.

  413. In 1 Peter 3, 20,

  414. we read that God's divine

  415. long-suffering

  416. waited patiently

  417. in the days of Noah

  418. as the ark was being prepared.

  419. So there's Noah,

  420. hammer in one hand,

  421. preaching from the other side,

  422. and as people are mocking him

  423. and seeing this massive

  424. wooden structure go up,

  425. he's calling to them,

  426. repent,

  427. turn to God the creator.

  428. You know what's been handed down

  429. since Adam and Eve

  430. through Seth.

  431. You know the promise.

  432. Repent and believe.

  433. We read in Genesis 7,

    Genesis 7:16

  434. verse 16,

  435. that God then

  436. sent a male and female

  437. of every species,

  438. and he sent Noah

  439. and his family

  440. into the ark,

  441. and then the Lord

  442. shut them in.

  443. God himself closed

  444. the door of the ark

  445. when the day had come.

  446. What comes next

  447. was real clouds in the sky,

  448. heavy rain,

  449. overflowing lakes,

  450. hungry waves,

  451. most likely boiling lava

  452. as the springs of the deep

  453. were opened up,

  454. swallowing up home

  455. after home,

  456. fear,

  457. angry panic,

  458. lost loved ones,

  459. running to the mountains,

  460. and then clamoring

  461. to be the last king

  462. of the hill.

  463. We read in 2 Peter 5

  464. that God himself

  465. protected Noah

  466. inside the ark.

  467. God protected

  468. everyone

  469. who fled

  470. to the refuge

  471. God provided.

  472. And then,

  473. God's judgment

  474. poured down

  475. on the whole earth.

  476. God's wrath

  477. purged the world

  478. of sin

  479. because God

  480. is holy,

  481. but God

  482. preserved those

  483. in his

  484. appointed

  485. refuge.

  486. Well,

  487. this story of Noah,

  488. it shows us

  489. that the effects

  490. of the fall

  491. were so devastating

  492. that God

  493. himself

  494. must act

  495. so the world

  496. doesn't self-destroy

  497. a thousand times over.

  498. And we should

  499. never forget that,

  500. the total depravity

  501. and how broken

  502. the city of man

  503. will be

  504. if God were to

  505. leave it,

  506. take his hands off.

  507. What we're going

  508. to see next week

  509. is that God

  510. himself must

  511. stabilize

  512. the stage,

  513. so to speak,

  514. before the playwright,

  515. God,

  516. enters his own

  517. drama

  518. as the hero.

  519. For today,

  520. we need to see

  521. Jesus Christ

  522. as the refuge

  523. God has provided.

  524. In 1 Peter 3.21,

  525. Peter says that

  526. this was a type,

  527. this was a shadow,

  528. and there's a

  529. greater antitype,

  530. a greater substance

  531. that was unveiled

  532. at the coming

  533. of Jesus Christ.

  534. There's a

  535. corresponding

  536. fulfillment

  537. in the new

  538. covenant

  539. to the flood

  540. and the salvation

  541. God provided.

  542. See,

  543. Noah was

  544. a real person.

  545. The flood

  546. was a real

  547. historic event.

  548. every mountain

  549. range

  550. on every

  551. continent

  552. of the world

  553. has evidence

  554. of marine

  555. life,

  556. not just

  557. fish from

  558. a sea,

  559. but sea stars

  560. and seashells

  561. that would only

  562. be found on

  563. oceans,

  564. are on the

  565. tops of

  566. every mountain

  567. of the world.

  568. We don't need

  569. that,

  570. but we should

  571. not be surprised

  572. when they find it.

  573. Ancient

  574. civilizations

  575. have passed

  576. down in their

  577. oral tradition

  578. even though

  579. they've been

  580. darkened by

  581. the devil.

  582. So we have

  583. in the Sumerian

  584. story,

  585. the Babylonian

  586. history,

  587. Celtic myths,

  588. Celtic myths,

  589. African myths,

  590. Pacific tribal

  591. legends,

  592. and even the

  593. Chinese character

  594. for ship,

  595. it's three

  596. characters combined.

  597. It's a boat,

  598. eight mouths,

  599. and the number

  600. eight.

  601. There it is.

  602. There's the three.

  603. So a ship

  604. is a big boat

  605. with eight people

  606. on it.

  607. The number

  608. eight is Noah

  609. and his wife,

  610. his three sons,

  611. and their wives.

  612. There's eight

  613. people on the

  614. ship.

  615. Both Noah

  616. and Adam

  617. are foreshadowing

  618. the person

  619. and work

  620. of Jesus Christ.

  621. Adam was

  622. born

  623. without sin,

  624. but he chose

  625. to sin.

  626. Noah was

  627. born into

  628. sin,

  629. and he could

  630. never escape

  631. it.

  632. But Jesus

  633. Christ became

  634. the man

  635. that Adam

  636. chose not to

  637. be by sinning,

  638. and the man

  639. that Noah

  640. could never

  641. be.

  642. Noah could

  643. not start

  644. a perfect

  645. new creation

  646. after the

  647. flood.

  648. He still

  649. had the

  650. depraved,

  651. sinful nature

  652. that he

  653. would pass

  654. on.

  655. In John

    John 5 chapter mention

  656. chapter 5,

  657. our Lord

  658. Jesus Christ

  659. said that all

  660. of the scriptures

  661. testify of

  662. him.

  663. Genesis

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  664. chapter 6

  665. and 7

  666. testify of

  667. Jesus Christ.

  668. Jesus is

  669. revealing to

  670. the world,

  671. I, God

  672. the Son,

  673. I am the

  674. hero.

  675. World history

  676. is my

  677. story.

  678. Jesus Christ

  679. is the

  680. Lord over

  681. all his

  682. creation,

  683. and he

  684. is the

  685. one who

  686. sees you.

  687. Even in

  688. the flesh

  689. on earth,

  690. he could

  691. see what

  692. was inside

  693. man,

  694. and he

  695. sees that

  696. your natural

  697. inclination

  698. is evil,

  699. continually,

  700. inside and

  701. out,

  702. and the

  703. evil deeds,

  704. they

  705. displease

  706. him.

  707. The wrath

  708. of Jesus

  709. Christ

  710. himself

  711. burns

  712. against sin

  713. because he

  714. is good,

  715. and he's

  716. also just,

  717. he will

  718. come back

  719. to judge

  720. the living

  721. and the

  722. dead,

  723. and he

  724. must punish

  725. evil.

  726. Yet

  727. Jesus came

  728. to fulfill

  729. the covenant

  730. of redemption

  731. that God

  732. the Father

  733. had given

  734. him to do

  735. in obedience.

  736. And Jesus

  737. Christ became

  738. the refuge,

  739. he became

  740. the ark,

  741. he became

  742. the one that

  743. whosoever has

  744. an ear to

  745. hear,

  746. run to me

  747. and be

  748. safe.

  749. Why can

  750. you be

  751. safe if

  752. you run

  753. to Christ?

  754. Because

  755. being divine,

  756. the flood

  757. of God's

  758. wrath won't

  759. destroy him,

  760. he will rise

  761. again.

  762. Yet being

  763. a man,

  764. he can

  765. relate to

  766. you and

  767. he can

  768. take you

  769. in,

  770. he can

  771. be the

  772. one that

  773. you have

  774. union with

  775. God,

  776. through

  777. his work.

  778. God

  779. must

  780. pour out

  781. his wrath

  782. against sin

  783. and evil.

  784. And Jesus

  785. Christ endured

  786. the cross.

  787. He received

  788. the wrath

  789. of the

  790. holy God

  791. so that

  792. whoever would

  793. be sheltered

  794. by him

  795. can survive.

  796. He passed

  797. through the

  798. waters of

  799. judgment

  800. and he came

  801. out alive

  802. and victorious

  803. on the other

  804. side to

  805. inaugurate his

  806. new creation.

  807. you see

  808. how all

  809. of this

  810. is unveiling

  811. the person

  812. and work

  813. of Jesus

  814. Christ.

  815. Well,

  816. the tone

  817. of this

  818. passage

  819. today is

  820. of stern

  821. warning.

  822. I'm doing

  823. my best

  824. to present

  825. the glory

  826. of the

  827. gospel,

  828. but not

  829. missing out

  830. on this

  831. tone of

  832. warning.

  833. That's how

  834. the whole

  835. new covenant

  836. interprets

  837. the flood.

  838. See,

  839. just as

  840. Adam's

  841. fall,

  842. it made

  843. all people

  844. of earth

  845. want to

  846. willingly

  847. forget

  848. who God

  849. is.

  850. We don't

  851. want to

  852. remember the

  853. moral law

  854. of God

  855. that he's

  856. written on

  857. man's

  858. heart and

  859. mind.

  860. So also

  861. in 2 Peter

  862. 3, 5,

  863. we read that

  864. you willingly

  865. forget the

  866. word of God,

  867. that same

  868. word that sent

  869. the floods

  870. that destroyed

  871. the earth,

  872. that same

  873. word of God

  874. promises that

  875. Christ is

  876. coming again.

  877. And just

  878. as people

  879. were eating

  880. and drinking

  881. and living

  882. as if there

  883. would be

  884. no end

  885. to their

  886. life,

  887. on the

  888. day that

  889. Noah entered

  890. the ark,

  891. Jesus says

  892. in Luke

  893. 17, 26,

  894. so people

  895. today are

  896. just as

  897. rebellious in

  898. their minds

  899. and hearts

  900. and imaginations

  901. and they will

  902. be caught by

  903. surprise on

  904. the day of

  905. the Lord.

  906. Just as God

  907. was true to

  908. his word and

  909. he sent a

  910. flood that

  911. destroyed all

  912. the wicked

  913. rebellion of

  914. man,

  915. so also the

  916. wrath of God

  917. against sin,

  918. it will purge

  919. this earth

  920. when Christ

  921. returns to

  922. judge the

  923. living and

  924. the dead

  925. one day.

  926. And this

  927. will be

  928. Jesus Christ,

  929. the man

  930. who is

  931. exalted at

  932. the right

  933. hand of

  934. the Father

  935. coming to

  936. judge and

  937. to pour

  938. out wrath,

  939. have the

  940. right picture

  941. of Christ.

  942. Revelation

  943. 6, 16

  944. says on

  945. that day,

  946. wicked sinners

  947. who had

  948. blasphemed

  949. God,

  950. they will

  951. run to

  952. the mountains

  953. and rocks

  954. and beg

  955. them to

  956. fall upon

  957. them and

  958. smash them.

  959. They'll say

  960. fall on us

  961. and hide us

  962. from the face

  963. of him who

  964. is seated

  965. on the throne.

  966. Listen,

  967. and from the

  968. wrath of the

  969. lamb for the

  970. great day of

  971. their wrath has

  972. come and who

  973. can stand.

  974. And just as the

  975. wrath of God

  976. against sin was

  977. poured out in

  978. the waters of

  979. judgment on

  980. the flood,

  981. you who have

  982. run to Christ

  983. as your refuge,

  984. take comfort.

  985. So also the

  986. wrath of God

  987. against your

  988. sin and

  989. against my

  990. sin, it

  991. has already

  992. been poured

  993. out on our

  994. Lord Jesus

  995. Christ on

  996. the cross.

  997. 1 John 2, 2

  998. says he,

  999. Jesus Christ

  1000. himself, is

  1001. the propitiation.

  1002. He is the

  1003. satisfaction, the

  1004. appeasement of

  1005. our sins.

  1006. The wrath of

  1007. God is

  1008. satisfied.

  1009. I love how

  1010. Milton Vincent

  1011. reflects on this

  1012. gospel truth.

  1013. Now, when I

  1014. am sinning, God's

  1015. grace does

  1016. abound, ensuring

  1017. my justified

  1018. status is

  1019. sound.

  1020. No wrath is

  1021. awakened in

  1022. God at my

  1023. sin because

  1024. Christ appeased

  1025. it to say

  1026. so again.

  1027. God's heart

  1028. pulses only

  1029. with passionate

  1030. grace, which

  1031. jealously wants

  1032. me back in

  1033. his embrace.

  1034. If you have

  1035. run to Christ

  1036. as your

  1037. refuge, then

  1038. you can know

  1039. this promise in

  1040. 1 Thessalonians

  1041. 5, 9.

  1042. God has not

  1043. destined us

  1044. for wrath,

  1045. but for

  1046. obtaining

  1047. salvation through

  1048. our Lord Jesus

  1049. Christ who died

  1050. for us.

  1051. Amen.

  1052. Just as God

  1053. brought new

  1054. order to his

  1055. creation after

  1056. washing it with

  1057. the waters of

  1058. judgment, so also

  1059. Christ brings

  1060. peace and order

  1061. to you who are

  1062. a new creation in

  1063. him.

  1064. You are new.

  1065. Your sins do

  1066. not determine who

  1067. you are.

  1068. It's Christ's

  1069. righteousness clothing

  1070. you.

  1071. You are that

  1072. new.

  1073. You are that

  1074. washed if you

  1075. are justified by

  1076. running to Jesus

  1077. as your Savior.

  1078. And just as God

  1079. patiently waited

  1080. with long

  1081. suffering, desiring

  1082. that none should

  1083. perish, desiring

  1084. that sinners run

  1085. to his son

  1086. repenting, so he

  1087. calls you and

  1088. everyone who has an

  1089. ear to hear,

  1090. repent, run to

  1091. Christ.

  1092. God has already

  1093. provided your

  1094. refuge.

  1095. God's wrath

  1096. purged the world

  1097. of sin, but he

  1098. will preserve you

  1099. who are in his

  1100. appointed place of

  1101. refuge.

  1102. He will shut you

  1103. in.

  1104. He closes the door

  1105. behind you.

  1106. You are safe

  1107. from his wrath.

  1108. When we think of

  1109. waters and judgment,

  1110. we have to also

  1111. think of baptism.

  1112. Christ passed

  1113. through the waters

  1114. of judgment.

  1115. He didn't skip

  1116. around them or

  1117. avoid them.

  1118. He passed

  1119. through the death

  1120. that you and I

  1121. deserve on the

  1122. cross.

  1123. And he rose to

  1124. newness of life

  1125. so he could

  1126. pass and channel

  1127. the blessings,

  1128. the grace of God

  1129. from heaven to

  1130. everyone who runs

  1131. to him.

  1132. And that's what we

  1133. celebrate with

  1134. baptism.

  1135. You are washed

  1136. with his blood

  1137. and by his

  1138. spirit.

  1139. His blood

  1140. washes you by

  1141. grace.

  1142. First Peter 321

  1143. makes this

  1144. interpretation,

  1145. this fulfillment.

  1146. Peter wrote that

  1147. baptism celebrates

  1148. that God has

  1149. cleansed your

  1150. conscience through

  1151. the resurrection

  1152. of Jesus Christ

  1153. who has gone

  1154. into heaven and

  1155. is at the right

  1156. hand of God

  1157. with all angels

  1158. and authorities

  1159. and powers being

  1160. subject to him.

  1161. you are baptized,

  1162. you are washed

  1163. by water and

  1164. the spirit.

  1165. An orthodox

  1166. catechism explains

  1167. that at your

  1168. justification,

  1169. the moment you

  1170. believe in Christ

  1171. and you receive

  1172. his righteousness,

  1173. at that very

  1174. moment, God

  1175. has renewed you.

  1176. He has set you

  1177. apart to be a

  1178. member of Christ's

  1179. body so that you

  1180. and I may more

  1181. and more become

  1182. dead to sin and

  1183. increasingly live a

  1184. holy and blameless

  1185. life.

  1186. We grow into

  1187. what we already

  1188. are.

  1189. We are washed

  1190. by the blood

  1191. of Jesus.

  1192. So dear Christian,

  1193. today, your

  1194. Lord tells you

  1195. this evil world

  1196. is perishing

  1197. away.

  1198. There is no

  1199. other refuge.

  1200. Don't be like

  1201. the man who

  1202. counted on his

  1203. home and his

  1204. shingles.

  1205. There is no

  1206. refuge but Jesus

  1207. Christ.

  1208. Christ.

  1209. And if he has

  1210. shut you in,

  1211. if he has shown

  1212. you his grace,

  1213. called you into

  1214. his son, Jesus

  1215. Christ, he will

  1216. keep you alive just

1217. as he kept Noah and

  1218. his family alive.

  1219. Run to my son,

  1220. God says.

  1221. I am faithful to

  1222. my covenant of

  1223. grace.

  1224. I will preserve

  1225. you, all of you

  1226. who are in Jesus

  1227. Christ.

  1228. My son is your

  1229. refuge.

  1230. Run to him and

  1231. live.

  1232. Let's pray.

  1233. Let's pray.
