  1. Well, our normal pattern of ministering God's Word is to preach through portions of the Bible that He has given us.

  2. This semester, we're doing something fun. We're doing a series called Covenant Theology, and it's a bit more topical.

  3. We're seeing different parts of Scripture, how God has revealed Himself by way of covenant.

  4. So covenant is a word and a concept that God Himself chose as a way of revealing who He is to His people.

  5. We've seen that the creation, the covenant that God made, called the Covenant of Works with Adam, the federal head.

  6. We've seen that before God created the heavens and the earth and even time, the Lord covenanted to save a people, the covenant of redemption.

  7. We saw last week the covenant that God made through Noah to preserve Him and to show grace, which is pointing to Christ.

  8. It's pointing to the covenant of grace.

  9. So today's focus is the Noahic Covenant, the covenant with Noah and all of creation, part two.

  10. In our Bible, we'll start reading with Genesis chapter 8.

    Genesis 8 chapter mention

  11. We'll start at verse 1, and I'm going to be calling out the section, so I'll try to make it clear so that we can read it and follow along together.

  12. As I read and you see your copy of God's Word, remember, we believe this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear and sufficient Word.

  13. It's the Word of God Himself for His people.

  14. So at the end, I'll say this is the Word of God.

  15. And if you receive it that way, you can respond, thanks be to God.

  16. Genesis 8, beginning at verse 1.

  17. Genesis 8, verse 15.

    Genesis 8:15

  18. Then God said to Noah,

  19. Verse 20.

  20. Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

  21. And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart,

  22. I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth.

  23. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.

  24. While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease.

  25. Chapter 9, verse 1.

  26. And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them,

  27. Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

  28. Chapter 9, verse 6.

  29. Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed.

  30. For God made man in his own image.

  31. And you be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.

  32. Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him,

  33. Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring and with every living creature that is with you,

  34. the birds, the livestock and every beast of the earth that is with you.

  35. As many as came out of the ark, it is for every beast of the earth.

  36. I establish my covenant with you that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood

  37. and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.

  38. And God said,

  39. This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you for all future generations.

  40. I have set my bow in the clouds and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

  41. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds,

  42. I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh.

  43. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.

  44. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.

  45. God said to Noah,

  46. This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all the flesh of the earth.

  47. This is the word of the Lord.

  48. Thanks be to God.

  49. Indeed, you may be seated.

  50. Let's pray.

  51. Amen.

  52. Father, we need help to walk in this world.

  53. Our minds so quickly turn to despair.

  54. We know the wrath that we deserve for our sin, but we're reminded, Lord, of your covenant faithfulness.

  55. And we pray, Father, that from this passage today, you'll make it more clear to your people

  56. how it is that you want us to walk on this earth and what it means to be part of the kingdom of heaven

  57. and in this world, though we are not of the world.

  58. Help us to understand, Lord, the context of our redemption and the context of the church today, Lord.

  59. We pray that you'll unite us as a body in the mission that you've given the church through Jesus Christ.

  60. We pray that your Holy Spirit will guide us, bring us closer and closer to you.

  61. Use your word to sharpen us, Lord.

  62. Use your word to fan into a flame, especially those who are weak today, Lord.

  63. Those whose whose faith is feels to be flickering.

  64. We know you will not quench the smoking flax.

  65. You will stoke it, Lord.

  66. You will preserve it.

  67. We pray that you'll do that today by the ministry of your word and the power of your Holy Spirit.

  68. For your glory we ask.

  69. Amen.

  70. Amen.

  71. In studying this passage and trying to understand in my own mind, what is the mission of the church?

  72. What does it mean to be in this world and not of the world?

  73. And what is it that God has set in place since the time of the waters receding after the flood?

  74. And then the kingdom that Christ inaugurated.

  75. There were several stories that came through my mind.

  76. The one I decided to share with you today begins with a man named Jan or John.

  77. And he lived in the Netherlands in a city called Leiden.

  78. His work in Leiden was a tailor.

  79. He made clothes.

  80. And he began hearing these teachings of a more radical group.

  81. And their feeling, their very strong feeling is that they could set up a new Jerusalem.

  82. A city in Germany that they would call Zion.

  83. And it would become a theocracy that would usher in the kingdom of heaven.

  84. So this group of zealous, fervent people moved to the German city of Münster.

  85. This was in the 1500s.

  86. At the time while Martin Luther was still alive in the Reformation in another part of Germany.

  87. Once this group came into power, the remaining sin in their flesh became very clear.

  88. Their lack of understanding of the Bible also became very clear.

  89. Jan, who then was nicknamed John of Leiden, he became like the king of this little new Jerusalem in the city of Münster.

  90. He took 16 wives for himself.

  91. The government ended up coming in and teaching a lesson.

  92. They beheaded these leaders.

  93. They put their bodies in cages that can still be found in a church.

  94. Not the bodies, but the cages are found in this church in Münster today, I'm told.

  95. I've never been there.

  96. That is an example of what Martin Luther called theologians of glory.

  97. People who read the Bible and they want to hold on to all the parts that bring themselves glory.

  98. They want to essentially put themselves in the place of Christ.

  99. Martin Luther saw the very clear contrast with the New Testament.

  100. What he called theologians of the cross.

  101. That's what we want to be.

  102. Theologians of glory, they prefer works.

  103. Theologians of the cross see the path following Christ includes suffering.

  104. Theologians of glory want glow.

  105. But theologians of the cross take up their cross daily and follow Christ.

  106. Theologians of glory want strength.

  107. Theologians of the cross embrace the weakness of our vessels.

  108. The weakness of our position depending on Christ daily.

  109. There is a very dangerous message in our country and around the world right now.

  110. I'm not even going to give the label, but you can probably guess or find it quickly on Google.

  111. And there's a group that claims if only our group or our movement could take over.

  112. You can take your pick how you want to fill in the next blink.

  113. Take over the school board.

  114. Take over the state government.

  115. Take over politics on a national level.

  116. One person said, quote, we would solve school shootings and we would, quote, solve immorality in America.

  117. So what is our view?

  118. What is our view as the church in light of this covenant that God makes through Noah and all creation after the flood?

  119. I don't know what your view is.

  120. I'll do my best to lay out for you what I see in these passages.

  121. Jesus Christ said that this earth will perish.

  122. This earth will perish.

  123. But if you see in our sermon text today, Genesis 8, verse 22.

    Genesis 8:22

  124. We're told that this earth also remains.

  125. So the sermon title today is how this earth remains.

  126. How in both senses.

  127. How can it remain?

  128. How can we not self-destroy?

  129. And then the other in the other sense, the earth does remain.

  130. How?

  131. What are the conditions?

  132. What has God set in place?

  133. Last week, as I mentioned, we saw that God covenants to save his seed from the coming judgment.

  134. And this foreshadows the first coming of Jesus Christ.

  135. We see in response to God preserving Noah and this seed that would crush the serpent's head one day.

  136. We see in Genesis chapter 8, verse 1.

    Genesis 8:1

  137. That God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark.

  138. And God made a wind blow over the earth and the waters subsided.

  139. The rain from the heavens was restrained.

  140. God was true to his promise.

  141. He's revealing the covenant of grace.

  142. He will preserve the seed until Jesus Christ comes to fulfill all of scripture.

  143. We see in chapter 8, verse 20.

  144. Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

  145. It's curious because this comes from Moses, through whom God did give the ceremonial law.

  146. So he's using a description that the people of Israel would have understood.

  147. But Noah was offering a sacrifice to God that was pleasing to God, even a reference to clean animals.

  148. So we have to imagine and try to understand how was it that Noah learned to do that?

  149. God showed incredible grace to Noah.

  150. And his first response when the water subsides is to build an altar and offer up a sacrifice.

  151. If you look in your Bible at Genesis chapter 5, the genealogy, you won't have time to do this now during the sermon, but you can see others who have charted it.

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

  152. You can simply make a bar graph for each of the ages of the people who lived.

  153. And it struck me one observation trying to answer this question.

  154. Where did Noah learn how to offer up a sacrifice on an altar?

  155. We're told that Noah's father, his name was Lamech.

  156. You see that in Genesis 5, verse 30.

    Genesis 5:30

  157. And if you look at the bar graphs of each of their lives, Lamech, Noah's father, would have most likely been alive when even Adam was still alive.

  158. And certainly when Seth was alive.

  159. So where did Lamech learn to offer a sacrifice?

  160. Well, most likely from Seth.

  161. And then there's old man Adam sitting there.

  162. Yes, and he gets to hear from that account the great story that we just reviewed of how God made a covenant of grace and clothed them, shedding the blood.

  163. Now, the interesting thing to me is that there was no overlap that I could tell between Noah and either Seth or Adam.

  164. Noah's faith and what Noah learned and how Noah responded seemed to be dependent on Lamech, his dad, as handing it over and teaching his own son.

  165. Now, in part two, the focus is less on the covenant of grace being foreshadowed and pointing to the work of Christ.

  166. Part two of the Noah covenant is this.

  167. We see here that God covenants to preserve the natural order as a backdrop for redemptive history to unfold.

  168. Yeah, God, God let Noah learn from his dad what pleases God.

  169. And Noah passed that on to his three sons.

  170. The one who seems to have believed and received that faith and through whom the promise would continue with Shem.

  171. And Abraham comes from the line of Shem.

  172. And so we see this continuity throughout all of Scripture.

  173. It's God unveiling and showing exactly how he will work.

  174. But the real question for the Noah covenant today, part two, is how does God stabilize the stage, as someone put it,

  175. so that the playwright, God himself, can become the main actor and the hero?

  176. So really, the focus is less on redemptive history and the covenant of grace being unveiled for Christ.

  177. It's more on the stage.

  178. How is it stabilized or the backdrop from which the grace of God and the person of Christ will shine?

  179. So here's a few observations as we walk through this.

  180. Genesis 8, chapter 20 or chapter 8, verse 21.

  181. So Noah offered that sacrifice.

  182. But now it's from God's perspective.

  183. In verse 21, when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said, pay attention, in his heart,

  184. I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth.

  185. I believe God is revealing himself to us who have his word now.

  186. I'm sure this isn't all of them, but here's four revelations from this passage.

  187. Number one, man is ill-meriting.

  188. Remember, Noah deserves death and judgment just like everyone else.

  189. But the Lord is merciful.

  190. Man's heart is evil, but God shall preserve life despite man's depravity.

  191. Mercy is withholding due punishment.

  192. And God says he will not destroy again.

  193. And after the flood, man continues to be fallen.

  194. Man is no better after the flood than he was before.

  195. Yet God grants man life under the sun, under creation.

  196. After the flood, man gets to live.

  197. And God will keep his promise no matter how good or bad man's works are.

  198. This covenant was purposed in God's heart.

  199. It does not depend on man in any way.

  200. God will preserve this world as long as it remains.

  201. So our Lord is merciful.

  202. I shall never again destroy the world with a flood.

  203. I shall never again strike down every living creature as I have done.

  204. God preserves the world that you and I live in every single day.

  205. When you wake up and the sun is shining, the grass is turning green another season.

  206. These are reasons to praise God and to remind ourselves,

  207. This is my father's world.

  208. He's the creator and the sustainer of everyone and everything.

  209. It also gives us a desire for the perfect mercy of God to be fully unveiled, doesn't it?

  210. It points forward.

  211. When will this merciful God fill the whole world with his glory?

  212. We long for that day.

  213. So that's the first revelation.

  214. Man is ill-meriting, but the Lord is merciful.

  215. Second revelation is that man is death-deserving,

  216. but God is not only merciful, he's gracious.

  217. God vows he will preserve the cycle of the seasons.

  218. He will govern earth's environment and climate

  219. to ensure animal and vegetable life continue.

  220. That's how this earth remains.

  221. So the book of Ecclesiastes is really a commentary on this, this truth.

  222. Life under the sun is only good.

  223. And food of the different seasons and the meats that you can grill,

  224. those are only good because God made it so.

  225. You deserve death, but God has filled this earth with things for you to enjoy

  226. in your life under the sun,

  227. knowing that it's all going to perish one day

  228. and your life is fleeting and it all ought to point you to God.

  229. Never to worship the creature rather than the creator.

  230. We read in verse 22,

  231. seed time and harvest, cold and heat,

  232. summer and winter, day and night shall not cease

  233. as long as the earth remains.

  234. What's the reason for that?

  235. You can say with confidence it's because God,

  236. the creator is in covenant with his whole earth.

  237. Doesn't that give you comfort?

  238. When you see the next headline,

  239. man, there's there's all kinds of headlines, aren't there?

  240. It's stuff you could not make up.

  241. When some of you were in school,

  242. these are things that the sci-fi was about

  243. and it's happened.

  244. It's all happening.

  245. How long will this earth remain and how does it remain?

  246. How have we even continued to remain this long?

  247. Only if a good God is sustaining all of it.

  248. God is generous

  249. and God is patient

  250. and God generously, patiently preserves all of life.

  251. He withholds his judgment.

  252. Doesn't it make you long for his glory

  253. to fill the earth fully, consummately one day?

  254. When will it be that this gracious Lord

  255. will truly rule over all the earth,

  256. not just in a preserving way,

  257. but the true kingdom of heaven filling this entire earth?

  258. We long for that day.

  259. So man is death deserving,

  260. but the Lord is gracious.

  261. The Lord also reveals this by way of covenant.

  262. So the same two points,

  263. but in the form of a covenant,

  264. the Lord reveals his covenant mercy

  265. and his covenant grace

  266. by committing himself,

  267. by vowing with a legally binding oath.

  268. This is how he'll do it.

  269. It was interesting for me to learn.

  270. If you look at verse 21,

  271. the Lord said in his heart,

  272. most interpreters think that

  273. this was God revealing later to Moses

  274. what was true all along,

  275. even if Noah didn't know it.

  276. So it's likely that

  277. what God was covenanting

  278. was part of that divine counsel,

  279. maybe not even heard by Noah

  280. at this point only.

  281. It would have become audible for Noah later,

  282. but God's decree does not depend on Noah

  283. even knowing that.

  284. God's decree was expressed

  285. in chapter 8 of Genesis

  286. by swearing by himself.

  287. And then if you turn to Genesis 9,

    Genesis 9:9

  288. verse 9,

  289. it's showing us what God did tell Noah.

  290. Now God is speaking to Noah

  291. in Genesis 9, 9.

  292. Behold, I establish my covenant with you

  293. and every offspring.

  294. The point here is that

  295. God covenants before man even knows it.

  296. That's another source of comfort

  297. that we can have.

  298. Some of you,

  299. this has been a wonderful truth to learn.

  300. Why is it that you believed in God?

  301. When you heard the gospel,

  302. why did you know

  303. that could even be true for you?

  304. That you could be cleansed

  305. by the blood of Jesus?

  306. Well, the answer is

  307. because God covenanted to do that.

  308. And you know you're saved.

  309. You know he gave you a new heart.

  310. But now, only now,

  311. by studying his word

  312. and what he's revealed,

  313. do you see,

  314. this is what was happening all along.

  315. And why?

  316. All glory be to God

  317. and more comfort for you.

  318. More trust in his promises.

  319. The fourth revelation I see here

  320. is that after the flood,

  321. the Lord covenanted

  322. not only with mankind,

  323. but with all future generations

  324. generations of mankind

  325. and every living creature

  326. with the whole earth itself.

  327. Let's look at Genesis chapter 9,

    Genesis 9:9

  328. verses 9 and 10.

  329. Behold, I establish my covenant

  330. with you and your offspring after you

  331. with every living creature with you.

  332. Verse 12,

  333. the covenant that I make

  334. is between me and you

  335. for all future generations.

  336. So Noah

  337. is receiving this

  338. on behalf of all mankind

  339. that will follow.

  340. There are no human beings

  341. on planet earth

  342. that did not come from Noah.

  343. His three sons came from him

  344. and everyone on filling the earth today

  345. came from this one man.

  346. So God's covenant stands

  347. to every single person

  348. from every people,

  349. nation, tribe, and tongue.

  350. God will preserve them.

  351. I love how Ecclesiastes 1, 4 says,

  352. a generation goes

  353. and a generation comes,

  354. but the earth remains forever.

  355. Picking up on this refrain.

  356. So those are the revelations

  357. we see in this passage.

  358. But next,

  359. I'd like to highlight

  360. the implications.

  361. I see five significant implications

  362. of the covenant

  363. that God made through Noah

  364. with all the earth.

  365. First is that the Noahic covenant

  366. is non-redemptive

  367. in the sense that it's not promising

  368. to save all of mankind.

  369. But instead,

  370. this covenant promises

  371. that God will sustain,

  372. uphold,

  373. govern all the earth

  374. until the ground,

  375. until the ground

  376. bears forth the fruit

  377. that man can eat

  378. and the animals reproduce

  379. and man can eat them.

  380. Man can enjoy life on the earth.

  381. He'll have the carbs he needs

  382. by tilling the ground

  383. and he'll have the protein he needs

  384. by shepherding the flocks.

  385. Man has to go out and work

  386. and cultivate

  387. in order to survive

  388. on this earth

  389. just like Adam

  390. east of Eden.

  391. But it's non-redemptive.

  392. So it's for survival

  393. and preservation only.

  394. One commentator

  395. that was very helpful here,

  396. I'll mention him a few times.

  397. His name is David Van Drunen,

  398. systematic theology professor

  399. at Westminster.

  400. He wrote,

  401. So the Noahic covenant

  402. is non-redemptive.

  403. Second is that

  404. the Noahic covenant

  405. is common,

  406. meaning that it's not

  407. limited to the elect

  408. and it's not limited

  409. to the special line

  410. from Abram

  411. to Jesus Christ.

  412. It's for every single

  413. human being.

  414. It's common.

  415. Another theologian,

  416. Meredith Klein,

  417. commented that

  418. common grace

  419. is not itself redemptive.

  420. Rather,

  421. it allows for the preservation

  422. of a world stage

  423. upon which the drama

  424. of the covenant of redemption

  425. could play out.

  426. So it's common

  427. and it's good

  428. for all.

  429. How can wicked people

  430. who despise God

  431. enjoy the fruit

  432. of his earth?

  433. How can they enjoy

  434. times of great harvest

  435. and prosperity

  436. and enjoy all the good gifts

  437. that God has given?

  438. Even if they don't give glory

  439. to God,

  440. it's because they are part

  441. of this common covenant

  442. that God made

  443. with all who fill the earth today.

  444. The third implication

  445. is that the sign

  446. of the Noahic covenant,

  447. it's symbolic.

  448. Because a sign,

  449. it points

  450. to further significance.

  451. The sign is the rainbow.

  452. Just as we can still see

  453. the rainbow today,

  454. we're reminded

  455. that the covenant

  456. is still in effect.

  457. Let's look together

  458. at chapter 9,

  459. verse 13.

  460. God says,

  461. I have set my bow

  462. in the cloud

  463. and it shall be

  464. a sign

  465. of the covenant

  466. between me

  467. and the earth.

  468. And even to this day,

  469. the rainbow shines out

  470. from the clouds

  471. for every man

  472. and beast

  473. to see.

  474. Everyone who sees

  475. the rainbow

  476. bears witness

  477. that God

  478. has made a covenant

  479. with the earth.

  480. God says,

  481. I have set

  482. my bow

  483. in the clouds.

  484. And this word

  485. is used

  486. in other parts

  487. to describe

  488. warfare language.

  489. One scholar

  490. pointed out

  491. how in ancient

  492. iconography,

  493. bows are vertical

  494. in battle.

  495. It means you're ready

  496. to shoot them.

  497. But then after a battle,

  498. the victorious Lord,

  499. as they're riding off

  500. on their horse,

  501. would be pictured

  502. with their bow

  503. horizontal,

  504. indicating peace

  505. following the war.

  506. You see how the bow,

  507. it's a sign

  508. that God

  509. has made war

  510. with wicked world.

  511. God is victorious

  512. and his bow

  513. is now in the resting position.

  514. He's giving man

  515. undeserved peace

  516. until the second coming

  517. of Christ.

  518. God has already

  519. waged his war.

  520. He's already punished

  521. the violent,

  522. rebellious man.

  523. And the rainbow

  524. is a sign.

  525. Notice,

  526. it's for God.

  527. Look at verse 16.

  528. It's a sign

  529. for God

  530. of his own

  531. terms

  532. of his covenant.

  533. This is a unilateral

  534. covenant.

  535. It's God himself

  536. who makes the covenant.

  537. God himself

  538. will keep the covenant.

  539. And the sign

  540. is,

  541. so to speak,

  542. a reminder

  543. for God.

  544. In verse 16,

  545. he says,

  546. when the bow

  547. is in the clouds,

  548. I will see it

  549. and I will remember

  550. the everlasting covenant

  551. between me

  552. and all life

  553. on earth.

  554. This is our

  555. God of peace.

  556. Doesn't it make you

  557. long for that day

  558. when true peace,

  559. relational shalom

  560. with God

  561. will fill

  562. this earth?

  563. When will that day

  564. come when the glory

  565. of this peace

  566. keeping God

  567. will rule over

  568. all perfectly?

  569. The fourth

  570. implication of the

  571. Noahic covenant

  572. is that it is

  573. binding today.

  574. The Noahic covenant

  575. is still binding

  576. just as it's good

  577. for every human being.

  578. It binds

  579. every man

  580. and woman today.

  581. Let's look together

  582. at verse 6.

  583. The Lord says,

  584. whoever sheds

  585. the blood

  586. of man,

  587. by man

  588. shall his blood

  589. be shed

  590. for God

  591. made man

  592. in his own image.

  593. Every human being

  594. is an image bearer

  595. of God.

  596. Every human being

  597. is precious

  598. in the eyes

  599. of the Lord.

  600. And it's also

  601. saying that it's

  602. man's job

  603. to shed the blood

  604. of murderers.

  605. How can man

  606. judge that way?

  607. How can man

  608. discern well?

  609. It's because

  610. every man

  611. has the image

  612. of God still.

  613. God preserves

  614. in all his

  615. image bearers

  616. a natural

  617. sense of

  618. law.

  619. This is a good

  620. thing.

  621. This is why

  622. we can have

  623. very wise

  624. judges

  625. and lawyers

  626. working a

  627. judicial system

  628. as image

  629. bearers of God

  630. though they're

  631. not saved,

  632. though they're

  633. not yet

  634. regenerated.

  635. But this is

  636. still binding

  637. today.

  638. The sanctity

  639. of life.

  640. One of the

  641. statistics I

  642. looked up,

  643. I had to

  644. double check

  645. this and

  646. just I

  647. sat there

  648. stunned and

  649. silent.

  650. Reminded again,

  651. you've heard

  652. these numbers

  653. as I have,

  654. how quickly

  655. I forget.

  656. Every hour,

  657. 100 abortions

  658. happen in

  659. America.

  660. One million

  661. abortions

  662. every year

  663. in this

  664. country.

  665. 73 million

  666. abortions

  667. every year

  668. worldwide.

  669. God's

  670. covenant with

  671. Noah is

  672. still binding.

  673. We are

  674. image bearers

  675. and God

  676. has given

  677. us a

  678. sense of

  679. law and

  680. justice.

  681. God's

  682. love.

  683. We need

  684. to have

  685. confidence in

  686. this world.

  687. We need

  688. to not be

  689. surprised by

  690. how wicked

  691. the world

  692. is.

  693. What we do

  694. need to be

  695. surprised by

  696. is how God

  697. can preserve

  698. anything good

  699. out of this

  700. fallen creation,

  701. even after the

  702. flood.

  703. And I am

  704. amazed at both

  705. of those things

  706. every week.

  707. How wicked

  708. we are

  709. because of

  710. sin as

  711. human beings

  712. and also

  713. how good,

  714. how much

  715. good people

  716. are capable

  717. of without

  718. even knowing

  719. the Lord

  720. Jesus.

  721. Paul pointed

  722. that out in

  723. Romans 2.14.

  724. He said,

  725. that's why

  726. Gentiles do

  727. by nature

  728. what the law

  729. requires.

  730. It's the only

  731. reason human

  732. beings do not

  733. act more

  734. badly.

  735. So we can

  736. ask,

  737. how does

  738. this world

  739. remain?

  740. This is how

  741. God preserves

  742. the world so

  743. it does

  744. remain.

  745. we read

  746. in Genesis

    Genesis 9:1

  747. chapter 9

  748. verse 1,

  749. God blessed

  750. Noah and

  751. his sons

  752. and said

  753. to them,

  754. be fruitful

  755. and multiply

  756. and fill

  757. the earth.

  758. This is

  759. another binding

  760. command for

  761. all mankind

  762. which is

  763. God's design

  764. for the

  765. family.

  766. God commands

  767. very clearly

  768. in scripture,

  769. man and

  770. wife are to

  771. multiply

  772. children

  773. within the

  774. family.

  775. That's

  776. God's

  777. good

  778. design.

  779. It's not

  780. a sin

  781. if a

  782. family

  783. can't

  784. have

  785. children

  786. or

  787. abstains

  788. from

  789. childbearing

  790. for medical

  791. or other

  792. reasons,

  793. but that's

  794. God's

  795. design.

  796. One man,

  797. one woman

  798. in a

  799. family

  800. bearing

  801. children.

  802. G.K.

  803. Chesterton

  804. pointed out

  805. the heart

  806. of human

  807. society

  808. is,

  809. quote,

  810. a triangle

  811. of truisms

  812. consisting

  813. of father,

  814. mother,

  815. and child.

  816. Tearing them

  817. apart has

  818. devastating

  819. results for

  820. both individuals

  821. and society.

  822. And one

  823. result is that

  824. ever more

  825. selfish and

  826. loveless forms

  827. of sex

  828. become normalized,

  829. someone pointed

  830. out,

  831. as forms of

  832. self-expression

  833. for salvation.

  834. that didn't

  835. strike me

  836. until recently.

  837. You start to

  838. hear some

  839. of the

  840. songs on

  841. the radio,

  842. songs that

  843. are,

  844. you know,

  845. it's different

  846. than the

  847. love songs

  848. of a

  849. different era.

  850. These are

  851. songs that

  852. are using

  853. worship

  854. language to

  855. describe a

  856. sexual

  857. encounter

  858. between

  859. two people.

  860. Normalizing

  861. sexual

  862. activity and

  863. identity as

  864. a form of

  865. self-expression

  866. and even a

  867. way of

  868. saving

  869. yourself.

  870. There's a

  871. Princeton law

  872. professor named

  873. Robert George.

  874. Everything I've

  875. read from him

  876. has been very

  877. helpful,

  878. and to me it's a

  879. reminder of this

  880. natural law.

  881. He wrote,

  882. it's odd,

  883. but there are

  884. people who seek

  885. fulfillment,

  886. even a kind of

  887. salvation in sex.

  888. They won't even

  889. expect more than

  890. it can give.

  891. Sadly,

  892. by perverting it,

  893. they deny themselves

  894. the great good

  895. that it actually

  896. can deliver,

  897. namely,

  898. true marital

  899. communion.

  900. That's the end

  901. of his quote.

  902. This is God's

  903. binding design

  904. on all mankind

  905. that fills the

  906. earth still

  907. today.

  908. And when we

  909. see God's

  910. covenant sign

  911. in the clouds,

  912. this is what we

  913. should be reminded

  914. of.

  915. We should thank

  916. him for preserving

  917. this wicked world

  918. as he does.

  919. guys.

  920. The fifth

  921. significance I

  922. see here is this,

  923. that we live in a

  924. layered reality.

  925. The Noahic

  926. covenant pulls

  927. together for us

  928. the backdrop,

  929. the three layers

  930. in which redemptive

  931. history will unfold

  932. now when we move

  933. next to the covenant

  934. God makes with

  935. Abraham.

  936. But here are the

  937. three layers of

  938. the reality of

  939. this world that we

  940. live in.

  941. Creation,

  942. fall,

  943. in Noahic

  944. preservation,

  945. we can call it.

  946. So our reality

  947. from creation,

  948. it includes God's

  949. natural law that

  950. reveals him and

  951. it reveals what

  952. pleases him.

  953. John Gill wrote

  954. that the natural

  955. law was given as

  956. part of the Lord's

  957. providential control

  958. over what he

  959. made.

  960. The content of the

  961. natural law is

  962. the moral law.

  963. What Jesus

  964. summarized as,

  965. love the Lord

  966. your God with

  967. all your heart,

  968. soul, mind, and

  969. strength, and love

  970. your neighbor as

  971. yourself.

  972. which the

  973. Mosaic covenant

  974. opened up as the

  975. Ten Commandments.

  976. A theologian named

  977. Ian Clary wrote

  978. that while the

  979. natural law could

  980. not establish God

  981. as the savior of

  982. mankind, it does

  983. tell us about God,

  984. the creator.

  985. It is insufficient

  986. to save sinners,

  987. so it needs to be

  988. re-engraved on our

  989. souls in

  990. regeneration.

  991. And that's the

  992. great promise of

  993. Jeremiah 31 and

  994. Hebrews 8 being

  995. fulfilled.

  996. I will write my

  997. law in your

  998. heart and in

  999. your mind.

  1000. So the

  1001. Noahic covenant

  1002. was not a simple

  1003. reinstituting of

  1004. God's creation

  1005. commands, but it

  1006. was a revision of

  1007. what God had

  1008. commanded all

  1009. along, but now

  1010. in the common

  1011. grace mode.

  1012. Not to fulfill as

  1013. a federal head like

  1014. Adam only could do

  1015. because he was

  1016. sinless, but rather

  1017. to preserve all

  1018. mankind until the

  1019. coming of the

  1020. second Adam who

  1021. could fulfill God's

  1022. covenant of works.

  1023. One theologian

  1024. pointed out how in

  1025. this covenant with

  1026. Noah, there is no

  1027. Sabbath in view.

  1028. In the first

  1029. creation, we see how

  1030. the Lord rested on

  1031. the Sabbath day.

1032. And then later on in

  1033. Exodus, when the law

  1034. is being given, the

  1035. fourth commandment, it

  1036. makes reference to

  1037. that.

  1038. You shall rest as

  1039. God's special people

  1040. because God rested at

  1041. creation.

  1042. But with the Noahic

  1043. covenant, there's no

  1044. mention of Sabbath

  1045. rest.

  1046. And so the Sabbath

  1047. ordinance, Meredith

  1048. Klein pointed out, it

1049. was a sign for Adam

  1050. and then for God's

  1051. people in the old

  1052. covenant that would

  1053. mark God's promise of

  1054. eschatological blessing.

1055. If you take a Sabbath

  1056. rest, it's pointing you

  1057. toward a greater rest

1058. that you'll have one day.

  1059. Before the fall, the

  1060. cultural mandate had the

1061. Sabbath in view, but this

1062. is not the case any

  1063. longer for those after

  1064. the flood.

  1065. In other words, he's

  1066. saying that those after

  1067. the flood should not

  1068. expect blessing from

1069. God by living on this

  1070. earth post-fall through

  1071. any cultural labors.

  1072. We cannot save

  1073. ourselves.

1074. So now I'm going to

1075. try to give you some

  1076. things to contemplate.

  1077. As you answer the

  1078. question for yourself, how

1079. do I live in this world?

  1080. in light of creation,

  1081. fall, and God's

  1082. preservation.

1083. First, this world is the

  1084. city of man.

1085. We're told that this world

  1086. is Satan's domain on

  1087. earth.

1088. The church is the city of

  1089. God.

1090. The church is a picture of

  1091. heaven coming to earth.

  1092. Michael Beck pointed out

1093. that when Christ came, he

1094. did not establish the state

1095. or the family or a school

  1096. or a business venture.

  1097. These things already

  1098. existed and were governed

  1099. and preserved under the

  1100. covenant God made with

  1101. Noah.

  1102. The Lord Jesus established

  1103. one thing, the church.

  1104. And Christ remains the

1105. universal Lord of all, but

1106. only the church is sacred.

1107. Only the church is the

1108. special kingdom of God on

  1109. earth.

  1110. First Timothy 2.2 says,

1111. We are now in the city of

  1112. man.

1113. We are to lead a peaceful

1114. and quiet life that is

1115. godly and dignified in every

1116. way, that this is good and

1117. pleasing in the sight of God

1118. our Savior, who desires all

1119. people to be saved and to

1120. come to the knowledge of the

  1121. truth.

1122. So while you're in the world

1123. and the city of man, live a

  1124. peaceful and quiet life,

1125. knowing this is pleasing in

1126. God's sight and may your

1127. life be a testimony that

1128. God uses to draw people in

1129. to be saved and to belong

1130. to his special kingdom on

1131. earth, which is the church.

1132. So this world is the city of

1133. man and the church is the

  1134. city of God.

1135. Number two, Christ did not

  1136. charge the church with

1137. ushering in the new heavens

1138. by taking over the city of

  1139. man by force.

  1140. Instead, the picture we're

1141. given is being like the

  1142. patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac,

  1143. and Jacob.

  1144. We are sojourners and

  1145. exiles in the world.

  1146. First Peter 2 11.

1147. Here we have no lasting

  1148. city.

1149. Instead, we seek the city

  1150. that is to come.

  1151. Hebrews 13 14.

1152. So as Christians in the city

1153. of man, yes, we vote.

1154. We can even run for offices,

1155. but we don't put our hopes

1156. that those things would save

  1157. this world.

  1158. First Timothy 2 11.

1159. We are to pray for those who

1160. rule over us as God's

  1161. ordained magistrates.

1162. I urge you that to make

  1163. supplications, prayers,

  1164. intercessions, and

  1165. thanksgivings for the civil

  1166. magistrates that God

  1167. ordained.

1168. But when the elections don't

1169. go the way we want here in

  1170. Colorado or nationally, that

1171. is not what we're putting our

  1172. hopes in.

1173. We trust that God will

  1174. preserve us through

  1175. suffering, through our

  1176. theology of the cross.

1177. as long as this earth

  1178. remains, he will preserve

1179. his people according to his

  1180. will.

1181. And if we're persecuted in

1182. this world, we say this is to

  1183. the glory of God.

1184. He's our provider and he will

1185. bring the new heavens and the

  1186. earth in his time.

  1187. Vendrunen wrote that Christians

  1188. should pursue cultural

  1189. activities.

  1190. We should do that.

  1191. Music, the arts, study

  1192. medicine, study law, study

1193. these things in the city of

  1194. man.

1195. But we do it with a spirit

1196. of love and service toward

  1197. them, not triumph and

  1198. conquest over the world.

1199. Our work in the world does

1200. not usher in the new

  1201. Jerusalem.

1202. We don't want to make the

1203. mistake of John of Leiden.

  1204. Revelation 21 verse 2 says

    Revelation 21:2

  1205. something mind-blowing.

1206. It says that the new

1207. Jerusalem, it is the bride of

  1208. Christ.

1209. Christ, the bride of Christ,

1210. the church, the people, they

  1211. are the continuity between

1212. this world and the world to

  1213. come.

1214. It is our bodies and our

1215. souls that God will transport

1216. into the new heavens and the

  1217. new earth.

1218. That's what will be in common.

  1219. It's the church.

1220. Vendrunen also wrote, no one

1221. born in Adam's curse could

  1222. accomplish Adam's dominion

  1223. mandate.

1224. The last Adam, Jesus Christ, he

1225. has completed that mandate once

1226. for all and no one else needs

  1227. to accomplish it.

1228. So when Jesus teaches us to

1229. pray for the will of God to be

1230. done and the kingdom of heaven

1231. to come on earth, we do that

1232. trusting that Christ is the one

1233. who ushers in the kingdom of

  1234. heaven spiritually.

1235. It is not the mission of the

  1236. world to trans.

1237. It's not the mission of the

1238. church to transform the world,

1239. but rather in Romans 12, we are

1240. told do not be conformed to the

1241. patterns of this world, but you

1242. church be transformed by the

  1243. renewing of your mind.

  1244. Beloved congregation of our

1245. Lord Jesus Christ, we are not

  1246. theologians of glory.

1247. We want to be theologians of the

  1248. cross.

1249. We want to obey Jesus and his

1250. command to take up our cross

  1251. daily in this world.

1252. He's preserving it until the full

1253. number of those that Christ

1254. purchased are brought to him.

1255. We don't want to have a mission

1256. statement that says we will

  1257. transform the world.

1258. Instead, we want to praise God

1259. every single day that he

1260. preserves this fallen world, this

1261. decaying planet, and he does

  1262. that through his people.

1263. This earth is that decaying

1264. carcass, but we are the salt of

  1265. the world.

1266. We've been pushed into the the

1267. massive humanity on earth to hold

1268. it together, to preserve it.

1269. We will not fill this planet with

1270. the kingdom of heaven by any form

  1271. of cultural dominion.

1272. Instead, Christians, we want to

1273. throw our whole life on the

1274. promise that Christ shall return

  1275. in glory one day.

1276. Romans 14, we read that we shall

1277. all stand before the judgment seat

  1278. of Christ.

1279. This is Christ's second coming.

1280. And as I live, saith the Lord, he's

  1281. quoting Isaiah 45.

1282. Every knee shall bow to me and

1283. every tongue shall confess to God.

1284. And so then every one of us shall

1285. give account himself to God.

1286. It's when Christ returns that every

1287. knee will bow and we will give

  1288. account to him.

1289. So when Christ does return that

1290. second time, all of the earth will

1291. be full of the glory of God.

1292. Habakkuk 2 14 says the earth shall

1293. be filled with the knowledge of the

1294. glory of the Lord as the waters

  1295. cover the sea.

1296. That's when the Lord will fill this

1297. earth with his kingdom of heaven and

1298. we will be able to rest fully and

  1299. finally with him forever.

  1300. Let's pray.

1301. Oh Lord God, hallowed be your name.

1302. You are the creator and sustainer of

  1303. everyone and everything.

1304. Lord, we do pray that your kingdom

1305. come and your will be done on earth as

  1306. it is in heaven.

1307. Thank you for how you've inaugurated the

1308. kingdom of heaven through the work of

1309. Jesus Christ in your church today.

1310. that we get to be part of that Lord, a

1311. foretaste of the heavenly glory will

  1312. enjoy.

1313. We long for the day when you will

1314. return, when you will come and your

1315. glory will cover this entire earth as

1316. the waters cover the sea.

1317. Please come quickly, Lord Jesus,

  1318. according to your will.

  1319. Amen.

  1320. Amen.

  1321. Amen.

  1322. Amen.

  1323. Amen.

  1324. Amen.

  1325. Amen.

  1326. Amen.

  1327. Amen.

  1328. Amen.

  1329. Amen.

  1330. Amen.

  1331. Amen.

  1332. Amen.

  1333. Amen.

  1334. Amen.

  1335. Amen.

  1336. Amen.

  1337. Amen.

  1338. Amen.

  1339. Amen.

  1340. Amen.

  1341. Amen.

  1342. Amen.

  1343. Amen.

  1344. Amen.

  1345. Amen.

  1346. Amen.

  1347. Amen.

1348. As we prepare for the Lord's Supper, I want to bring to your attention some important parallels between Noah and Adam.

1349. Came from the study and Bible commentary.

1350. In both narratives, Adam and Noah, God created and then recreated out of watery chaos.

1351. Both Adam and Noah are said to be the image of God.

1352. And those are the only occurrences in all of Genesis of that phrase, the image of God.

1353. Both Adam and Noah walked with God.

1354. Both exercised dominion over animals.

1355. Adam was told to name the animals.

1356. Noah was told to preserve them in the ark.

1357. God commands each to be fruitful, to multiply, and to rule.

1358. Both Adam and Noah were to work the ground.

1359. Both Adam and Noah sinned in connection with what they consumed.

1360. Adam sinned by eating the forbidden fruit.

1361. Noah, after the water subsided, grew a vineyard, grew the grapes, made wine, got drunk.

1362. And the sin of both Adam and Noah resulted in shame, in nakedness, and needing clothing.

1363. Our Lord Jesus Christ came.

1364. The Bible calls him the second Adam.

1365. He came to inaugurate the new creation.

1366. And we're told that those who are in Christ are clothed with his righteousness.

1367. And now with the Lord's Supper, we eat and we drink.

1368. All that man has done to sin, to destroy that bond, the covenant of grace, it goes forward and it promises the blessings that Christ secured for you.

1369. So come to the Lord's table today.

1370. If you are a Christian, if you're united to him, praising him for his righteousness, praising him for redeeming what we eat, redeeming what we will drink.

1371. It's not a fruit of the vine that's bitter anymore.

  1372. It's sweet taste.

1373. And it's a foretaste of the banquet feast of heaven.

1374. The new Jerusalem, the Zion of God, where he rules his people as their king.

1375. If Jesus is your king, then this is his table.

1376. And he invites you to come and to feast with him, to rest in his grace again today.

1377. If you're a baptized believer in good standing within a church, taking steps toward membership or visitors who know Jesus, then you come and you enjoy the Lord's Supper.

  1378. It's for you.

1379. We'll take the elements by making a line down the middle, breaking off the bread and taking the cup back to your seat.

1380. And then once everyone's been served, we'll stand together as a spiritual family and we'll read from God's word to enjoy it together.

  1381. You may be served.

  1382. You may be served.
