  1. By God's grace, on August 14th, a year and a half ago, we started with John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  2. And before the summer, we're going to be wrapping up this wonderful little gospel.

  3. It was the last gospel to be written by an eyewitness.

  4. We're going to read today as our sermon text, John chapter 18, verse 1, all the way through verse 24.

    John 18:1

  5. As I read this, remember that this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  6. It's God's very own word for you, his people.

  7. So if you receive it that way, after I'm done reading it, you follow along, then I'll say this is the word of the Lord and we'll respond, thanks be to God.

  8. John 18, verse 1.

    John 18:1

  9. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.

  10. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.

  11. So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

  12. Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to him, whom do you seek?

  13. They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth.

  14. Jesus said to them, I am he.

  15. Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.

  16. When Jesus said to them, I am he, they drew back and fell to the ground.

  17. So he asked them again, whom do you seek?

  18. And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

  19. Jesus answered, I told you that I am he.

  20. So if you seek me, let these men go.

  21. This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken.

  22. Of those whom you gave me, I have lost none.

  23. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.

  24. The servant's name was Malchus.

  25. So Jesus said to Peter, put your sword into its sheath.

  26. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?

  27. So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him.

  28. First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year.

  29. It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.

  30. Verse 15.

  31. Simon Peter followed Jesus and so did another disciple.

  32. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.

  33. But Peter stood outside at the door.

  34. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl, who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in.

  35. The servant girl at the door said to Peter, you also are not one of his disciples, are you?

  36. He said, I am not.

  37. Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire because it was cold.

  38. And they were standing and warming themselves.

  39. And Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.

  40. The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

  41. Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world.

  42. I have always taught in the synagogues and in the temple where all Jews come together.

  43. I have said nothing in secret.

  44. Why do you ask me?

  45. Ask those who have heard me what I said to them.

  46. They know what I said.

  47. When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying,

  48. Is that how you answer the high priest?

  49. Jesus answered him, If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong.

  50. But if what I said is right, why do you strike me?

  51. Annas then sent him back to Caiaphas, the high priest.

  52. This is the word of the Lord.

  53. Thanks be to God.

  54. You may be seated.

  55. The Bible says that the grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  56. Let's pray.

  57. Let's pray.

  58. O Lord, your word is the sword of your spirit.

  59. We ask that by the power of your spirit, you will use your word.

  60. How Jesus Christ is revealed in this passage to pierce us, Lord.

  61. Strike us down to the heart so that you will be glorified more and more in our private lives and in the life of this congregation.

  62. And we ask this for the sake of our precious Savior, Jesus Christ.

  63. Amen.

  64. Amen.

  65. Well, beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  66. Today, I simply want to watch with you as God accomplishes your redemption in mine.

  67. I want us to walk through these verses and watch God himself accomplish your redemption.

  68. There's nothing more practical or applicable that we could do.

  69. If you are a Christian, then you want to be more holy than you are now.

  70. If you're like me, it is a battle, that sanctification marathon.

  71. And the more you're in God's presence, the more you behold his holiness, the more you want to be holy,

  72. and the more aware you are of your sinfulness.

  73. Do you feel that too?

  74. The energy for our sanctification comes from God.

  75. And it's the love of God for you that elicits a response of love in you for God.

  76. And that simple truth, that's the secret to our sanctification.

  77. So, do you want to be more holy?

  78. Do you want to grow in your sanctification?

  79. And God's people say, yes and amen, till the last day I have breath, right?

  80. Then be reminded again today of how much God loves you in his son.

  81. And let that stir up in your heart a greater love for God.

  82. That's the key.

  83. That's it.

  84. In John 17, verse 4, Jesus had prayed to his father, and the apostle John is within earshot.

    John 17:4

  85. Jesus prayed, Father, I have glorified you on earth.

  86. I have accomplished the work that you gave me to do.

  87. So, let's watch how God accomplishes our redemption.

  88. Here's the first word picture.

  89. God the Son entered the valley to drink from the brook in the garden.

  90. Watch God accomplish your redemption.

  91. God the Son entered the valley to drink from the brook in the garden.

  92. Look at verse 1.

  93. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron,

  94. where there was a garden.

  95. The brook Kidron runs north-south.

  96. The valley Kidron follows that between the mountains.

  97. It is in between the eastern wall of the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives.

  98. So, in ancient Israel, this would have been the easternmost border of the city of Jerusalem.

  99. When the Jews would hear that phrase, the Kidron Valley,

  100. they would have recalled 2 Samuel 15, 24 and 23,

  101. when David, the great king from Jerusalem, was betrayed.

  102. And he crosses the Kidron with the people following behind,

  103. weeping for their king.

  104. The Kidron Brook is about three feet wide,

  105. and it wides in between these mountains.

  106. We know this in Colorado.

  107. When the sun is setting behind the mountains,

  108. it gets very dark quickly in the valley.

  109. And for a barren countryside that's much like Colorado,

  110. with very few trees here and there,

  111. this was an area by a brook where vegetation would grow very abundantly,

  112. making it a natural garden.

  113. And this garden was called the Garden of Gethsemane.

  114. What's more, we read in 2 Chronicles 29, 16,

  115. that this was a common dumping ground and a common graveyard.

  116. When the Levites found unclean things in the temple,

  117. in the time of Reformation,

  118. they threw it into the Kidron Valley to get rid of it.

  119. One commentator said that there was a canal

  120. that connected the temple itself.

  121. So all of those thousands of lambs that would be brought into the temple,

  122. they would be slit at the throat,

  123. and their blood would drain into this canal.

  124. And guess where that canal dumps?

  125. It's into the Kidron Brook.

  126. Are you getting this scene,

  127. this word picture that John is painting for us?

  128. And because that canal is passing through the city,

  129. people would throw their waste,

  130. their personal dung,

  131. they would throw all those pieces of trash and common waste

  132. into this canal as it flowed into the brook,

  133. making that water turn darker and darker,

  134. more and more polluted.

  135. Here's the word picture.

  136. Adam's sin made the garden a valley of death.

  137. Jesus Christ prays Psalm 23,

  138. which is so familiar.

  139. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

  140. I will fear no evil,

  141. for you, Father, are with me.

  142. Remember in Psalm 110, verse 7,

    Psalms 110:7

  143. the covenant of redemption,

  144. the last image we're left with of this coming Messiah

  145. is that he shall drink from the brook by the way.

  146. And so our Lord Jesus,

  147. the King leaving Jerusalem,

  148. crossing over this black water of the brook, Kidron,

  149. he's prepared.

  150. And he prays,

  151. Father, not my will according to my human nature,

  152. but your will be done through me.

  153. John Gill commented,

  154. so Jesus Christ went forth over on his own account,

  155. willingly, cheerfully,

  156. not forced or compelled by any.

  157. Verse 1 says,

  158. Jesus himself went forth,

  159. and his disciples followed behind.

  160. Now the disciples were following along,

  161. not to be partakers of his suffering,

  162. but as eyewitnesses of everything our Lord would accomplish,

  163. so that now you and I can sit here by the power of the Spirit

  164. and watch God accomplish our redemption.

  165. The first Adam cursed all mankind by his sin,

  166. and so he was banished from God's garden of light,

  167. and now Jesus Christ,

  168. the second, final Adam,

  169. he enters man's garden of darkness

  170. to break the curse of man's sin.

  171. God the Son entered the valley

  172. to drink from the brook in the garden.

  173. The second word picture John gives us is this.

  174. Soldiers of darkness seek the light of the world,

  175. though he is never hidden.

  176. Soldiers of darkness seek the light of the world,

  177. though he is never hidden.

  178. In verse 3 we read that Judas,

  179. with a band,

  180. which was at least 500 men plus officers

  181. from the chief priests and Pharisees,

  182. what Matthew 27, 47 calls a great multitude.

  183. They approached Jesus with lanterns and torches.

  184. Descriptive language for light.

  185. These lanterns were Greek vessels

  186. in which you would put a candle,

  187. and it had holes that would allow

  188. the light of the candle to shine out.

  189. The torches would have been like a handle,

  190. and you would take rags,

  191. dip those rags in oil,

  192. stuff them inside that handle,

  193. and then light that on fire.

  194. Can you picture this scene?

  195. On top of that,

  196. we're told they were bearing weapons.

  197. So here they march into the dark of the valley,

  198. bearing weapons with lanterns and torches.

  199. In Psalm 3,

  200. we get a glimpse,

  201. a prophetic glimpse of what this would have been.

  202. And David wrote,

  203. How many are my foes?

  204. Many are rising against me.

  205. Many are saying of my soul,

  206. there is no salvation for him in God.

  207. And in verse 4,

  208. Jesus,

  209. knowing all things that should come upon him,

  210. receives them.

  211. Jesus knew all the sufferings he would endure

  212. were determined by God.

  213. There would be nothing that would happen to Jesus

  214. that was not God's will.

  215. Jesus, on top of that,

  216. agreed to this in the covenant of redemption.

  217. Jesus, according to his human nature,

  218. had studied all of the Old Testament

  219. to see how the Messiah would fulfill God's plan

  220. in God's perfect time

  221. to accomplish your redemption.

  222. We read again in verse 4,

  223. Knowing this,

  224. Jesus went forth of his own accord.

  225. Someone pointed out,

  226. Jesus did not hide himself in the garden like Adam did.

  227. He was willingly apprehended by them.

  228. He was voluntarily surrendering himself to suffer.

  229. Why?

  230. To accomplish your redemption.

  231. We read in verse 5,

  232. that Judas,

  233. who betrayed Jesus,

  234. stood now with those soldiers of darkness.

  235. Judas had dipped the bread with Jesus.

  236. They had eaten the meal together.

  237. Now that same man is the head of this mob.

  238. It's possible, dear friend,

  239. to be so close to the light of God

  240. in the person of Jesus.

  241. It's possible to be that close

  242. and yet to remain cold,

  243. unrepentant,

  244. distant from God.

  245. Don't fall into that trap like Judas.

  246. Instead,

  247. watch God himself accomplish your redemption.

  248. In this scene,

  249. these were soldiers of darkness

  250. seeking the light of the world

  251. and he was never hidden.

  252. The third word picture

  253. is the long-suffering Savior

  254. surrenders himself

  255. that his disciples might be free.

  256. The long-suffering Savior

  257. surrenders himself

  258. that you could be free.

  259. In verse 4,

  260. Jesus asks this mob

  261. that's approaching him,

  262. whom do you seek?

  263. They say,

  264. Jesus of Nazareth.

  265. We see while it's going through

  266. the mind of our Lord

  267. in verse 20,

  268. his argument is,

  269. I have taught openly

  270. for the whole world to hear.

  271. Always in public,

  272. at the synagogue

  273. and in the temple,

  274. where you men always were,

  275. I have said nothing in secret.

  276. So he's asking,

  277. who do you seek

  278. for their sake?

  279. This is his gracious ministry to them.

  280. They could have said,

  281. we seek the great rabbi,

  282. the one who proclaimed

  283. God's word with authority.

  284. They could have said,

  285. we seek the great comforter.

  286. who said,

  287. blessed are the meek,

  288. for they shall inherit the earth.

  289. To be meek is to be long-suffering,

  290. not easily irritated,

  291. gentle,

  292. yielding,

  293. forbearing under injury.

  294. Jesus is the blessed one.

  295. Jesus is meek.

  296. Jesus will inherit the earth.

  297. Jesus is the Messiah.

  298. They could have said,

  299. we seek the one

  300. who the people believe

  301. is the Messiah,

  302. the one they were saying,

  303. Hosanna.

  304. But instead,

  305. they say,

  306. we seek Yeshua

  307. of that podunk town,

  308. Nazareth,

  309. a common man,

  310. a carpenter by trade.

  311. Jesus looks at them,

  312. and in the original language,

  313. what Jesus says is,

  314. I am.

  315. He declares,

  316. he is God.

  317. And when he says,

  318. I am.

  319. I am Yahweh,

  320. the God of the covenant,

  321. the God who is the creator of all.

  322. I am.

  323. They fall down backward.

  324. A commentator observed,

  325. his voice,

  326. though delivered by human lung and lips,

  327. it would have been filled with the majesty

  328. and the spiritual authority

  329. of heaven itself.

  330. I am.

  331. Full of divine power.

  332. And our Lord Jesus Christ

  333. displayed in these two words,

  334. he's capable not only

  335. of knocking any creature down on their butt,

  336. he's capable of slaying his enemies

  337. with his word.

  338. He could have as easily struck them dead

  339. as to cause them to fall to the ground.

  340. But yet he's fulfilling the promise of God

  341. in Psalm 147, verse 6.

    Psalms 147:6

  342. Listen to this.

  343. The Lord lifts up the meek.

  344. He casts down the wicked to the ground.

  345. In verse 7,

  346. then Jesus asked them again,

  347. whom do you seek?

  348. They had just felt

  349. in their ears,

  350. in their souls,

  351. on their backsides,

  352. the power of God.

  353. They had just felt it.

  354. They had just felt it.

  355. And yet they remained so darkened

  356. by their own pride.

  357. See how merciful our Lord is.

  358. See his long-suffering

  359. to be their Savior.

  360. Their answer is simply,

  361. we seek Jesus of Nazareth.

  362. In verse 8,

  363. Jesus answered,

  364. I have told you that I am he.

  365. Therefore,

  366. let these go their way.

  367. Jesus Christ knew that he had come

  368. to be the good shepherd

  369. who would lay down his life

  370. on behalf of his sheep.

  371. I am the one you need to tie up

  372. so that my disciples

  373. can go free.

  374. He surrenders himself

  375. so that you

  376. can be free.

  377. John the baptizer

  378. had been proclaiming that.

  379. Behold,

  380. the Lamb of God

  381. who has come

  382. to take away

  383. the sin of the world.

  384. He himself

  385. would take it away

  386. as your substitute,

  387. as the Lamb

  388. who would die

  389. in your place.

  390. R.C. Sproul commented

  391. that at the center

  392. of Jesus Christ's teaching

  393. was the assertion

  394. that he was doing

  395. all of this

  396. not for himself

  397. but for us

  398. to redeem us,

  399. to ransom us,

  400. to save us.

  401. And the Apostle John

  402. learned this lesson

  403. as the eyewitness.

  404. See what he writes

  405. in verse 8.

  406. The Son of God

  407. loses none of those

  408. the Father gave him.

  409. And what Jesus spoke

  410. in respect

  411. to his disciples,

  412. those 12,

  413. now 11 men

  414. who were with him,

  415. it is true spiritually

  416. of all God's elect.

  417. All who are given

  418. to Christ,

  419. none shall be lost.

  420. So Christian,

  421. if Jesus Christ

  422. gave himself

  423. to be the Lamb of God

  424. for your sin,

  425. you cannot be lost.

  426. You belong to him,

  427. body and soul.

  428. Your soul is united

  429. to God now

  430. by the work of Jesus.

  431. And your body

  432. will be glorified

  433. with him one day

  434. when he comes in glory.

  435. Don't you long

  436. for that day.

  437. This is possible

  438. because the long-suffering

  439. Savior surrendered himself

  440. so that you and I

  441. might be free.

  442. All glory be to God.

  443. Watch God accomplish

  444. your redemption.

  445. The fourth word picture

  446. is this.

  447. God the Son

  448. eager

  449. to drink

  450. the poison cup

  451. of God's wrath

  452. for you.

  453. God the Son

  454. was eager

  455. to drink

  456. that cup

  457. of God's wrath

  458. though it would kill him.

  459. And he did that

  460. that you would live.

  461. Now in verse 10

  462. Peter

  463. had a sword.

  464. Maybe Peter

  465. was one of those

  466. concealed carry guys

  467. always had it with him.

  468. We know the Galileans

  469. lived up north

  470. and they had to travel south

  471. and there were bandits

  472. and robbers

  473. and others

  474. that would be known

  475. to attack them

  476. and so it was common

  477. for travelers

  478. to carry a dagger.

  479. There will also be

  480. wild beasts

  481. on these trails

  482. in a valley like that

  483. in the dark of the night

  484. by the brook.

  485. It was smart

  486. to keep a weapon nearby.

  487. The disciples

  488. had asked Jesus

  489. we have two swords

  490. and Jesus said

  491. that's enough.

  492. In other words

  493. I'm not looking

  494. for an armed rebellion

  495. against the ruling powers.

  496. We read that

  497. Peter drew his sword

  498. most likely aiming

  499. to chop off

  500. the head of the man

  501. or slit him

  502. across the throat

  503. and cut off

  504. his ear instead.

  505. The other three gospels

  506. tell us

  507. that this happened

  508. but not that

  509. the man's name

  510. was Malchus.

  511. Remember the gospel

  512. of John

  513. was written

  514. much later.

  515. By the time

  516. John wrote

  517. this gospel

  518. Peter was dead

  519. he had been

  520. crucified upside down

  521. for denouncing

  522. the name of Jesus.

  523. John is the only one

  524. who gives us

  525. the name Malchus.

  526. Commentators think

  527. that perhaps

  528. this is because

  529. Malchus continued

  530. to live

  531. and he was

  532. related to the high priest

  533. he was in that

  534. upper echelon

  535. that could have

  536. easily taken out

  537. revenge

  538. on whoever it was

  539. that did that

  540. to him in the dark.

  541. But now John

  542. wants everyone

  543. to know

  544. it was Malchus.

  545. Malchus might have

  546. been one

  547. who continued

  548. to persecute

  549. the church

  550. and now John

  551. needs the church

  552. to know.

  553. In verse 11

  554. Jesus said to Peter

  555. Peter

  556. put away your sword

  557. put it back

  558. in the sheath.

  559. God has given me

  560. this cup

  561. shall I not

  562. drink it?

  563. Peter it's not

  564. these men

  565. doing this

  566. to me.

  567. This is how

  568. God

  569. the Son

  570. accomplishes

  571. your redemption.

  572. Jesus is eager

  573. to drink it.

  574. John Gill's comment

  575. is that this cup

  576. it means the wrath

  577. of God

  578. and the punishment

  579. of a holy

  580. just God

  581. that is due

  582. to sin

  583. and it was

  584. endured by Christ

  585. in his sufferings

  586. and he eagerly

  587. receives it

  588. from the Father.

  589. Jesus says

  590. my Father

  591. gave this to me

  592. shall I not

  593. drink it?

  594. Jesus was

  595. displeased

  596. with Peter's

  597. attempt here

  598. to thwart

  599. God's redemption.

  600. Jesus had

  601. wrestled in prayer

  602. in the Garden

  603. of Gethsemane

  604. right before this

  605. and in Mark

  606. we read that

  607. it was a deep

  608. agony in his soul

  609. but now

  610. according to

  611. his human nature

  612. Jesus was

  613. perfectly willing

  614. resolved

  615. and even eager

  616. to drink

  617. this bitter potion.

  618. It's the only way

  619. to satisfy

  620. the wrath

  621. of an eternal

  622. holy God.

  623. We're watching

  624. God accomplish

  625. our redemption.

  626. I ask you

  627. at the beginning

  628. do you want

  629. to be more holy?

  630. Horatius Benar

  631. Scottish pastor

  632. in the 1800s

  633. he commented

  634. like this

  635. he said

  636. it's only

  637. the free

  638. pardon

  639. of the cross

  640. that has the power

  641. to uproot

  642. your sin

  643. and wither

  644. its branches.

  645. It's only

  646. the certainty

  647. of God's

  648. love for you

  649. his forgiving

  650. love

  651. that can replace

  652. the lust

  653. we have

  654. for sin

  655. remaining

  656. in our flesh.

  657. It needs

  658. to be replaced

  659. with an even

  660. greater response

  661. of love

  662. and gratitude

  663. for God.

  664. So watch God

  665. accomplish

  666. your redemption.

  667. Here's the fifth

  668. word picture.

  669. The Lamb of God

  670. was bound

  671. and carried off

  672. to be sacrificed

  673. as your substitute.

  674. The Lamb of God

  675. we're told

  676. he was bound

  677. and he was carried off.

  678. Why?

  679. He's presented

  680. to the priest

  681. next

  682. and that's

  683. so that he would

  684. be a substitutionary

  685. sacrifice

  686. for your sin.

  687. In verse 12

  688. we're told

  689. that this band

  690. plus the captain

  691. and officers

  692. of the Jews

  693. they took Jesus

  694. they bound him.

  695. Old Testament

  696. shadows

  697. and types

  698. are being fulfilled.

  699. You recall

  700. Isaac being

  701. bound up

  702. to be offered

  703. as a sacrifice

  704. of his father

  705. Abraham

  706. in obedience

  707. to the Lord.

  708. When a sacrifice

  709. was brought

  710. and put on top

  711. of the altar

  712. it was bound up

  713. and tied

  714. to the altar.

  715. And even when

  716. the farmers

  717. were out in the fields

  718. and they would

  719. gather their grain

  720. they would bind them

  721. up in sheaths

  722. and present them

  723. to God

  724. at the temple.

  725. And so now

  726. God the Son

  727. himself

  728. is bound

  729. with cords

  730. and carried

  731. to the high priest.

  732. This is God

  733. accomplishing

  734. your redemption.

  735. Jesus Christ

  736. was bound

  737. in order

  738. to unbind

  739. the cords

  740. of sin

  741. that hold on

  742. to your sinful

  743. nature.

  744. Jesus Christ

  745. was bound

  746. to deliver you

  747. from the captivity

  748. of Satan.

  749. Jesus Christ

  750. was bound

  751. to free you

  752. from the bondage

  753. of the law

  754. that accuses

  755. and condemns you.

  756. In verse 13

  757. we read that they

  758. led him away

  759. next to Annas.

  760. Annas was

  761. father-in-law

  762. to Caiaphas

  763. who was the chief

  764. priest that year.

  765. And at the end

  766. of our passage

  767. in verse 24

  768. we're told then

  769. after seeing Annas

  770. Annas

  771. had sent him

  772. bound

  773. to Caiaphas

  774. the high priest.

  775. in Luke 3

  776. 2

  777. we're told

  778. that both

  779. Annas

  780. and Caiaphas

  781. were the high priest

  782. which is

  783. not possible.

  784. It shows

  785. the corruption

  786. of this system.

  787. By this point

  788. in the history

  789. of Israel

  790. the office

  791. of high priest

  792. with all the money

  793. changers

  794. and temple collectors

  795. it had become

  796. a giant scam.

  797. The glory of God

  798. had never re-entered

  799. the temple.

  800. Scholars

  801. have every reason

  802. to believe

  803. the Ark of the Covenant

  804. was not even

  805. in the Holy of Holies

  806. it was empty

  807. of the presence

  808. of God

  809. until Jesus Christ

  810. steps into the temple.

  811. Annas

  812. had been

  813. the high priest

  814. after him

  815. he had had

  816. five sons

  817. that served

  818. as high priests

  819. now it's the turn

  820. of his son-in-law

  821. so Annas

  822. the big mafia

  823. boss

  824. the grandfather figure

  825. that's making

  826. everything run

  827. so they know

  828. to check in first

  829. with the one

  830. who really calls

  831. the shots

  832. and that's Annas.

  833. So Jesus Christ

  834. was bound

  835. carried away

  836. and then presented

  837. to these corrupt

  838. leaders

  839. these fake

  840. high priests

  841. in a great twist

  842. of irony

  843. the perfect

  844. unblemished

  845. Lamb of God

  846. is presented

  847. as the once

  848. for all

  849. substitutionary

  850. sacrifice.

  851. and even

  852. that corrupt

  853. high priest

  854. spoke the truth

  855. he says

  856. it is

  857. good

  858. that one

  859. man

  860. die

  861. in the place

  862. of the people

  863. God even

  864. used this corrupt

  865. man

  866. filling an office

  867. as a shadow

  868. to show

  869. the declaration

  870. of the righteous

  871. God

  872. this will be

  873. my substitutionary

  874. Lamb

  875. it's through

  876. his death

  877. that a great

  878. multitude

  879. will live

  880. without compromising

  881. my justice

  882. as God

  883. the creator

  884. the Lamb

  885. of God

  886. bound

  887. and carried

  888. off

  889. to be sacrificed

  890. as your substitute

  891. to.

  892. The sixth

  893. word picture

  894. that I see

  895. in this passage

  896. for today

  897. is this

  898. the true

  899. vine

  900. was struck

  901. so that you

  902. would be

  903. grafted in

  904. Jesus

  905. had said

  906. I am

  907. the true

  908. vine

  909. apart from me

  910. you can bear

  911. no fruit

  912. and we read

  913. that Jesus

  914. was struck

  915. in verse 22

  916. so there's a

  917. picture of the

  918. true vine

  919. the only one

  920. with eternal

  921. life

  922. the only one

  923. with power

  924. to bear

  925. good fruit

  926. being struck

  927. so that you

  928. and I

  929. could be

  930. grafted in

  931. well in the

  932. garden

  933. all of the

  934. disciples

  935. had fled

  936. away from

  937. Jesus

  938. but now

  939. we're told

  940. that two

  941. follow him

  942. to the

  943. high priest

  944. Peter is

  945. named

  946. the other

  947. disciple

  948. is not

  949. which is a

  950. pattern for

  951. most likely

  952. John the

  953. apostle

  954. the author

  955. of this

  956. book

  957. in Matthew

  958. 26

  959. 58

  960. we read

  961. that they

  962. followed him

  963. afar off

  964. unto the

  965. high priest's

  966. palace

  967. so Peter

  968. is not

  969. following him

  970. like a

  971. close

  972. disciple

  973. instead

  974. he's

  975. curious

  976. and he's

  977. not wanting

  978. to be

  979. discovered

  980. but he does

  981. need to see

  982. what will

  983. happen

  984. if you

  985. are a

  986. disciple

  987. if you

  988. are a

  989. sheep

  990. you will

  991. follow the

  992. voice of

  993. your good

  994. shepherd

  995. and at

  996. times we

  997. can feel

  998. like Peter

  999. I'm your

  1000. disciple but

  1001. I need to

  1002. stay behind

  1003. a little bit

  1004. I have too

  1005. much to lose

  1006. by following

  1007. you too

  1008. closely

  1009. praise God

  1010. for Peter's

  1011. example here

  1012. it's a

  1013. comfort for

  1014. sinners like

  1015. you and

  1016. me

  1017. some have

  1018. speculated that

  1019. maybe John

  1020. was known

  1021. by the

  1022. high priest

  1023. and that's

  1024. why he was

  1025. let in

  1026. perhaps because

  1027. their business

  1028. John Peter and

  1029. Andrew was

  1030. fishermen and

  1031. a lot of

  1032. people want to

  1033. buy fresh

  1034. fish from

  1035. the market

  1036. verse 16

  1037. we read that

  1038. Peter for

  1039. whatever reason

  1040. was not allowed

  1041. inside though

  1042. even though

  1043. John did

  1044. get inside

  1045. so Peter

  1046. stayed back

  1047. at the

  1048. door

  1049. and the

  1050. slave girl

  1051. asks him

  1052. are you not

  1053. one of

  1054. this man's

  1055. disciples

  1056. are you not

  1057. one of

  1058. this man's

  1059. disciples

  1060. if she only

  1061. knew what

  1062. she was

  1063. saying

  1064. Jesus is

  1065. not just

  1066. a mere

  1067. man

  1068. and her

  1069. tone is

  1070. implying that

  1071. he's a

  1072. worthless

  1073. man

  1074. a criminal

  1075. Peter says

  1076. in verse

  1077. 16

  1078. I am

  1079. not

  1080. the

  1081. powerful

  1082. words of

  1083. the

  1084. Savior

  1085. were

  1086. I am

  1087. with

  1088. Jesus

  1089. Peter

  1090. this

  1091. disciple

  1092. was a

  1093. rock

  1094. he'd

  1095. said

  1096. I will

  1097. never

  1098. abandon

  1099. you

  1100. apart

  1101. from

  1102. Jesus

  1103. Peter

  1104. cowers

  1105. and bows

  1106. before

  1107. a mean

  1108. girl

  1109. in verse

  1110. 19

  1111. we read

  1112. that the

  1113. high priest

  1114. then asked

  1115. Jesus

  1116. about his

  1117. disciples

  1118. and of

  1119. his teaching

  1120. or his

  1121. doctrine

  1122. and Jesus

  1123. had taught

  1124. Peter

  1125. and John

  1126. I am the

  1127. true vine

  1128. apart from

  1129. me

  1130. you can

  1131. do

  1132. nothing

  1133. for

  1134. for today

  1135. oh

  1136. follower

  1137. of

  1138. Christ

  1139. hold

  1140. on to

  1141. those

  1142. words

  1143. of

  1144. Jesus

  1145. he says

  1146. unless

  1147. you abide

  1148. in me

  1149. you cannot

  1150. bear

  1151. fruit

  1152. but

  1153. Jesus

  1154. promises

  1155. to

  1156. Peter

  1157. to

  1158. John

  1159. and to

  1160. all of

  1161. his

  1162. followers

  1163. I

  1164. will

  1165. build

  1166. my

  1167. church

  1168. through

  1169. you

  1170. I

  1171. will

  1172. storm

  1173. the

  1174. gates

  1175. of

  1176. hell

  1177. Satan

  1178. and his

  1179. army

  1180. of

  1181. demons

  1182. cannot

  1183. withstand

  1184. the

  1185. advance

  1186. of my

  1187. kingdom

  1188. oh

  1189. disciple

  1190. when I

  1191. fill you

  1192. with the

  1193. Holy

  1194. Spirit

  1195. you will

  1196. joyfully

  1197. follow me

  1198. to the

  1199. ends

  1200. of the

  1201. earth

  1202. you

  1203. will

  1204. toil

  1205. as my

  1206. laborer

  1207. Paul

  1208. could testify

  1209. of this

  1210. Colossians

  1211. 129

  1212. 129

  1213. it's

  1214. with

  1215. all

  1216. of

  1217. Christ's

  1218. energy

  1219. that I

  1220. powerfully

  1221. work

  1222. because

  1223. he

  1224. works

  1225. within

  1226. me

  1227. Jesus

  1228. calls

  1229. us

  1230. to

  1231. abide

  1232. in

  1233. him

  1234. if

  1235. you've

  1236. been

  1237. grafted

  1238. in

  1239. you

  1240. rest

  1241. in

  1242. the

  1243. energy

  1244. and

  1245. the

  1246. power

  1247. of

  1248. Jesus

  1249. Christ

  1250. from

  1251. heaven

  1252. Jesus

  1253. says

  1254. you

  1255. will

  1256. do

  1257. this

  1258. joyfully

  1259. my

  1260. troops

  1261. will

  1262. be

  1263. willing

  1264. on

  1265. the

  1266. day

  1267. of

  1268. war

  1269. you

  1270. will

  1271. follow

  1272. me

  1273. you

  1274. will

  1275. take

  1276. up

  1277. your

  1278. cross

  1279. like

  1280. John

  1281. the

  1282. Baptist

  1283. though

  1284. you

  1285. will

  1286. die

  1287. beheaded

  1288. with

  1289. your

  1290. head

  1291. served

  1292. on

  1293. a

  1294. platter

  1295. the

  1296. more

  1297. you

  1298. decrease

  1299. the

  1300. more

  1301. I

  1302. will

  1303. increase

  1304. see

  1305. Christians

  1306. we belong

  1307. to this

  1308. God

  1309. who

  1310. accomplished

  1311. our

  1312. redemption

  1313. you

  1314. may

  1315. feel

  1316. like

  1317. you're

  1318. just

  1319. as

  1320. weak

  1321. as

  1322. Peter

  1323. and

  1324. we

  1325. are

  1326. apart

  1327. from

  1328. him

  1329. you

  1330. might

  1331. feel

  1332. like

  1333. one

  1334. of

  1335. those

  1336. traitors

  1337. you

  1338. might

  1339. feel

  1340. like

  1341. Judas

  1342. himself

  1343. Jesus

  1344. says

  1345. I

  1346. am

  1347. I

  1348. am

  1349. God

  1350. and

  1351. I

  1352. accomplished

  1353. your

  1354. redemption

  1355. you

  1356. belong

  1357. to

  1358. the

  1359. kingdom

  1360. of

  1361. the

  1362. great

  1363. I

  1364. am

  1365. and

  1370. it

  1371. is

  1372. finished

  1373. our

  1374. sin

  1375. deserves

  1376. everlasting

  1377. punishment

  1378. because

  1379. we've

  1380. offended

  1381. an

  1382. immortal

  1383. God

  1384. and

  1385. what

  1386. would

  1387. have

  1388. taken

  1389. us

  1390. the

  1391. rest

  1392. of

  1393. eternity

  1394. future

  1395. to

  1396. pay

  1397. off

  1398. Jesus

  1399. Christ

  1400. drank

  1401. down

  1402. in a

  1403. few

  1406. Jesus

  1407. Christ

  1408. very

  1409. God

  1410. very

  1411. man

  1412. could

  1413. accomplish

  1414. this

  1415. redemption

  1416. so if

  1417. you desire

  1418. to be

  1419. more

  1420. holy

  1421. don't

  1422. let

  1423. the

  1424. enemy

  1425. deceive

  1426. you

  1435. suspense

  1436. brings

  1437. forth

  1440. unto

  1441. holiness

  1461. your

  1462. will

  1463. it's

  1464. only

  1465. the

  1466. certainty

  1467. of

  1468. love

  1469. forgiving

  1470. love

  1471. perfect

  1472. love

  1498. accomplished

  1499. your

  1500. redemption

  1501. your

  1502. free

  1503. pardon

  1504. let

  1505. his

  1506. work

  1507. uproot

  1508. and

  1509. wither

  1510. away

  1511. the

  1512. weeds

  1513. of

  1514. sin

  1515. in

  1516. your

  1517. life

  1518. now

  1544. we

  1545. praise

  1548. now

  1549. Jesus

  1550. Christ

  1551. thoroughly

  1552. pleads

  1553. our

  1554. cause

  1555. and
