  1. We'll be reading our sermon text, which is from John 18, picking up where we left off

  2. last week.

  3. So this week we'll begin reading at verse 25, John 18, 25.

  4. As I read, remember that this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient

  5. word.

  6. It's God's very own word for you and me, his people.

  7. When I'm done reading, I'll say, this is the word of the Lord and we can celebrate.

  8. Thanks be to God.

  9. John 18, starting at verse 25 and to the end of the chapter.

  10. Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself.

  11. So they said to him, you also are not one of his disciples, are you?

  12. He denied it and said, I am not.

  13. One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked,

  14. did I not see you in the garden with him?

  15. Peter again denied it.

  16. And at once the rooster crowed.

  17. Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters.

  18. It was early morning.

  19. They themselves did not enter the governor's headquarters so that they would not be defiled,

  20. but could eat the Passover.

  21. So Pilate went outside to them and said, what accusation do you bring against this man?

  22. They answered him, if this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.

  23. Pilate said to them, take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.

  24. The Jews said to him, it is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.

  25. And this was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.

  26. Verse 33.

  27. So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, are you the king of the Jews?

  28. Jesus answered, do you say this of your own accord or did others say it to you about me?

  29. Pilate answered, am I a Jew?

  30. Your own nation and the chiefs, the chief priests have delivered you over to me.

  31. What have you done?

  32. Jesus answered, my kingdom is not of this world.

  33. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting that I might not be delivered over to the Jews.

  34. But my kingdom is not from this world.

  35. Then Pilate said to him, so you are a king.

  36. Jesus answered, you say that I am a king.

  37. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world to bear witness to the truth.

  38. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.

  39. Pilate said to him, what is truth?

  40. And after this he said, after he said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, I find no guilt in him.

  41. But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover.

  42. So do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?

  43. They cried out again, not this man, but Barabbas.

  44. Now, Barabbas was a robber.

  45. This is the word of the Lord.

  46. Thanks be to God.

  47. You may be seated.

  48. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  49. Let's pray.

  50. Father, we praise you that though we wither like the grass in this body,

  51. through the word of God, you reveal to us Jesus Christ, the truth, the way, the life of heaven.

  52. We praise you for revealing yourself to us by the person and work of your son, Jesus Christ,

  53. the only mediator between God and man.

  54. We confess our utter dependence on you.

  55. We thank you, Lord, that you have not left your church as orphans, but that you remain with us.

  56. We thank you for how you have sent what you called an even better ministry,

  57. and that's the Holy Spirit, wielding the sword of the Spirit, the word of God.

  58. We pray that your truth in simple, plain language will enlighten our minds,

  59. will put a flame in our hearts, will stir us up, Lord, to follow you more closely.

  60. Lord, we are your people in this life as pilgrims.

  61. We're hungry.

  62. We need our daily bread.

  63. We need Jesus Christ himself.

  64. Please feed us today, Lord.

  65. Sustain your people by the ministry of your word, we ask.

  66. Amen.

  67. Well, beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  68. I want to walk through this passage with you and declare what Christ declared,

  69. and that's why God the Son came into this world.

  70. Why God the Son came into this world.

  71. We read it a bit earlier, Isaiah 53, 6,

  72. how we all, like sheep, have gone astray.

  73. We have each turned to our own way.

  74. That's you, isn't it?

  75. That's my wondering heart.

  76. Now, in this passage, our good shepherd, Jesus declares in verse 37,

  77. it's to this end that I was born, for this cause, that I came into the world.

  78. It's to be the good shepherd of my people.

  79. You have steered away from his green pastures.

  80. You have ventured off into the wild.

  81. You're in the valley of darkness.

  82. There's thorns.

  83. There's those beady eyes of wolves and predators.

  84. There's a vulture circling around you.

  85. That's how you are if God would leave you alone.

  86. But the good shepherd says, for this reason, I was born.

  87. For this reason, I came into the world.

  88. It's to rescue you.

  89. I see in this passage, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,

  90. and the way that the Apostle John is arranging this glorious message,

  91. I see five reasons he gives us to meditate on.

  92. And I invite you to ponder these truths with me.

  93. The first reason that God the Son came into this world

  94. was to prove himself most faithful when you and I are most faithless.

  95. Have you been faithless this past week?

  96. Have you lacked the faith that you want in your spirit?

  97. I have.

  98. That's the first reason God the Son came into the world,

  99. to prove that he is most faithful when you and I are most faithless.

  100. You and I are Peter.

  101. Look at verse 25.

  102. Simon Peter stood warming himself at the fire.

  103. This tells us that it was a cold night.

  104. Our Lord Jesus being interrogated by Annas and Caiaphas

  105. in the middle of this cold night was faithful.

  106. Peter was cold, was weak.

  107. Isn't it so common for the enemy, for Satan,

  108. to tempt us most in our weakness?

  109. When we're tired, when we're emotionally drained,

  110. when we're physically weak, we are so susceptible.

  111. Our guard drops too often.

  112. And they said to Peter,

  113. Aren't you also one of his disciples?

  114. You see Satan baiting the hook.

  115. We don't know exactly what Peter was thinking or feeling.

  116. We can infer that he has fear and maybe pride.

  117. Here's the one who he believed would be the Messiah,

  118. the conquering Savior.

  119. Arrested.

  120. Tied up.

  121. Peter denied him a second time.

  122. He said, I am not.

  123. In John 13, 37, Peter had told Jesus

  124. in front of all the other disciples as witnesses,

  125. I will lay down my life for you.

  126. Jesus Christ replied to him,

  127. Will you?

  128. There's the tender patience of our Lord.

  129. Will you?

  130. Jesus said to Peter,

  131. truly, truly, I say to you,

  132. the rooster will not crow

  133. till you have denied me three times.

  134. In verse 26, we read that one of the servants of the high priest,

  135. his kinsman,

  136. whose ear Peter had cut off,

  137. he said,

  138. Did not I see you in the garden with this man?

  139. In verse 27, Peter denied Jesus the third time.

  140. Immediately, the rooster crows.

  141. We read in verse 28,

  142. then it was early.

  143. You see, a whole cold night has passed.

  144. Why does our Lord prophesy that this will happen?

  145. A rooster will crow.

  146. Peter, at least, maybe John and others will take note of that and be reminded.

  147. When does a rooster crow?

  148. A rooster crows while it's still dark,

  149. but it's a signal that the sun will be rising soon.

  150. This was the darkest hour of Peter's life.

  151. And he hears this sound.

  152. And it's a reminder of his weakness

  153. and of Christ's faithfulness.

  154. The rooster signals the break of dawn.

  155. In Peter's darkest hour,

  156. Jesus Christ is most faithful.

  157. Let that comfort you.

  158. Through those moments of your life

  159. when you have felt yourself to be most faithless,

  160. God has sustained you.

  161. That's why you're here on a Sunday morning.

  162. It's because in his covenant of grace,

  163. God's steadfast love endures forever.

  164. That's his promise.

  165. And so the rooster crows,

  166. and soon it was morning.

  167. I'm reminded of Psalm 110.

  168. Remember the covenant of redemption.

  169. The Father makes the promise to the Son,

  170. the reward for his obedience.

  171. And Psalm 110 says,

  172. You, Son, you will rule with majesty.

  173. In the womb of the dawn.

  174. Our Lord is about to show the type of rule

  175. of his kingdom.

  176. And he conquers Satan.

  177. He crushes the serpent's head on the cross.

  178. In the womb of the morning,

  179. he's holding on to that promise of his Father.

  180. It's curious how John,

  181. the same apostle,

  182. begins this whole gospel

  183. in John 1, 5

  184. by declaring,

  185. The light shines in the darkness

  186. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  187. Peter was tempted three times.

  188. Three times.

  189. Exposed for being faithless.

  190. Our Lord Jesus was tempted in the desert

  191. three times.

  192. It's his perfect active obedience

  193. as a substitute for Peter's perfect failures.

  194. You and I are failures.

  195. We are faithless just like Peter.

  196. We need Christ's active obedience.

  197. Because where we are faithless,

  198. Christ has been faithful

  199. to fulfill all righteousness on our behalf.

  200. That's what Paul declares

  201. as an encouragement to Timothy.

  202. 2 Timothy 2, 13

  203. When we are faithless,

  204. he remains faithful,

  205. for he cannot deny himself.

  206. Praise God like Peter

  207. for Christ's active obedience

  208. on your behalf.

  209. Jesus declares,

  210. To this end I was born.

  211. For this cause I came into the world.

  212. Because you, Peter,

  213. and each one of you and me,

  214. we all like sheep have gone astray.

  215. We have turned every one of us

  216. to our own way.

  217. But the Father has laid

  218. our faithlessness on Christ

  219. to prove that he is faithful.

  220. Praise be to God.

  221. The second reason I see here

  222. why God the Son

  223. came into the world

  224. was to satisfy God's justice

  225. in his dying.

  226. that you and I may justly live.

  227. Sinners deserve death.

  228. The wages of sin is death.

  229. And God is just.

  230. So how could a just God

  231. remain just

  232. by allowing sinners to live?

  233. There's only one way.

  234. God the Son.

  235. He had to come into the world.

  236. And he had to be the one

  237. that would satisfy God's justice

  238. by dying in your place

  239. and in mine.

  240. That's the only way

  241. that you and I

  242. could justly live.

  243. Look with me at verse 28.

  244. They led Jesus from Caiaphas

  245. into the hall of judgment.

  246. It was early.

  247. They themselves went

  248. not into the judgment hall

  249. lest they should be defiled.

  250. They wanted to eat the Passover.

  251. Well, we know that Jesus

  252. with his disciples

  253. celebrated the Passover

  254. the day before.

  255. So there are two ways

  256. that this can be possible.

  257. Because so many people

  258. migrated to Jerusalem

  259. it was an accepted custom

  260. that you would celebrate

  261. either on Thursday or Friday.

  262. There was also a law

  263. in Deuteronomy

  264. where the Levites

  265. and those of the tribe

  266. of Levi that would be

  267. administering the public Passover

  268. in the temple

  269. they would have a special meal

  270. and a special celebration

  271. on Friday.

  272. And so this is potentially

  273. what that was as well.

  274. But I think what John

  275. the Apostle is highlighting here

  276. is the irony.

  277. The situational irony

  278. in the way he uses the language.

  279. Irony was a literary technique

  280. originally used

  281. in ancient Greek culture.

  282. When they were describing

  283. a tragic life

  284. or a hero

  285. they would use

  286. situational irony.

  287. So an example

  288. that we can relate to

  289. of situational irony

  290. would be like

  291. the fire station

  292. caught on fire.

  293. You know

  294. or the Supreme Court

  295. would not submit themselves

  296. to the rule of law.

  297. Those types of things

  298. would be situational irony.

  299. Now let's notice

  300. in this passage

  301. John mentioned

  302. that they led Jesus

  303. into the hall

  304. of judgment.

  305. They wanted to

  306. unjustly condemn

  307. the only sinless man

  308. in their hall of judgment.

  309. He who is the creator

  310. and judge

  311. of all the world.

  312. In verse 29

  313. we read that

  314. after spending time

  315. with Jesus

  316. Pilate

  317. goes back out

  318. and he asks them

  319. what accusations

  320. do you bring against this man?

  321. See the Jews

  322. are trying to use Pilate

  323. in order to

  324. to condemn

  325. an innocent man.

  326. They're thinking

  327. that they can be

  328. smarter and more clever

  329. than God

  330. with God's own laws.

  331. They're saying

  332. our hands will stay clean

  333. if we can get this

  334. Gentile

  335. this man

  336. from the Roman Empire

  337. to cast the judgment

  338. and sentence Jesus

  339. though he's innocent

  340. to die.

  341. The irony is that

  342. the people of God

  343. were always

  344. intended and called

  345. to take the good news

  346. of God's forgiveness

  347. by grace

  348. to the nations

  349. and here they are

  350. trying to condemn

  351. the nations

  352. putting blood

  353. on the hands of Pilate.

  354. In verse 31

  355. Pilate says

  356. take him

  357. and judge him

  358. according to your own law.

  359. It is not just

  360. for us

  361. to kill

  362. a man

  363. they say.

  364. They're

  365. they're telling

  366. Pilate

  367. we want this man

  368. dead.

  369. We want

  370. capital punishment.

  371. We want him to die

  372. on a Roman cross

  373. and we do not want

  374. to be associated

  375. with the clear injustice

  376. that needs to be done

  377. to that man.

  378. But Pilate

  379. are you going to

  380. are you going to

  381. play ball with us?

  382. You know how powerful

  383. we are here.

  384. Pilate's a puppet

  385. of the Roman Empire.

  386. So here they are

  387. twisting

  388. God's own law

  389. the law of the holy God

  390. the law of Jesus Christ

  391. the whole law

  392. was meant to be

  393. a shadow

  394. of God's work

  395. and a picture

  396. on earth

  397. of his coming kingdom

  398. and yet

  399. they're twisting

  400. that law

  401. to put

  402. the king

  403. on a cross.

  404. In verse 32

  405. John makes it

  406. as clear as can be

  407. all of this

  408. was by God's providence

  409. so that

  410. the word of Jesus

  411. himself would be

  412. fulfilled.

  413. It was signifying

  414. the death

  415. that he should die.

  416. The gospels pick up

  417. on this.

  418. Matthew 20

    Matthew 20:19

  419. verse 19

  420. Jesus tells them

  421. the son of man

  422. will be handed over

  423. to the Gentiles

  424. to be mocked

  425. and flogged

  426. and crucified.

  427. And the Jewish law

  428. says that cursed

  429. is any man

  430. who hangs on a tree.

  431. And Jesus

  432. also said

  433. on the third day

  434. the Messiah

  435. the anointed Savior

  436. will rise

  437. again

  438. to life.

  439. John Gill

  440. pointed out

  441. how God's providence

  442. conducted

  443. every detail

  444. and our Lord Jesus

  445. cheerfully submitted

  446. in great love

  447. to his people

  448. to redeem

  449. you

  450. from the curse

  451. by being made

  452. a curse

  453. for you.

  454. I love how

  455. this comes

  456. from Peter

  457. himself

  458. who's

  459. the failure

  460. in this story.

  461. In 2 Peter 2

  462. 24

  463. Peter wrote

  464. to the church

  465. Jesus Christ

  466. himself

  467. bore our sins

  468. in his body

  469. on the tree

  470. that we might

  471. die to sin

  472. and live

  473. to righteousness.

  474. By

  475. his wounds

  476. we are healed.

  477. what comforting

  478. words for Peter

  479. to meditate on.

  480. Jesus is declaring

  481. it's to this end

  482. that I was born

  483. it's for this cause

  484. that I came

  485. to the world.

  486. You all like sheep

  487. have gone astray

  488. but it pleased

  489. the Father

  490. to lay on the Son

  491. the guilt

  492. the death

  493. deserving guilt

  494. of sinners

  495. in your place

  496. and mine

  497. so that we

  498. may justly

  499. live.

  500. The third

  501. reason that

  502. God the Son

  503. came into

  504. the world

  505. was to

  506. transfer prisoners

  507. in darkness

  508. into his

  509. heavenly kingdom

  510. of light.

  511. God the Son

  512. came into

  513. this world

  514. to transfer

  515. prisoners

  516. who are in

  517. bondage to

  518. sin and Satan

  519. in darkness

  520. into the

  521. kingdom of heaven

  522. a kingdom

  523. of light.

  524. in verse 33

  525. we see that

  526. Pilate entered

  527. into the judgment

  528. hall again

  529. to address Jesus

  530. and he asks him

  531. are you

  532. the king of the Jews?

  533. So there's

  534. Pilate

  535. standing in

  536. the presence

  537. of the king

  538. of glory

  539. and he's

  540. questioning him

  541. rather than

  542. confessing

  543. the truth.

  544. It's possible

  545. for you and me

  546. to be like

  547. Pilate

  548. we're in

  549. the presence

  550. of the king

  551. of glory

  552. and rather

  553. than bowing

  554. our knees

  555. and our hearts

  556. to him

  557. in worship

  558. we stand

  559. here questioning

  560. him.

  561. Jesus

  562. are you

  563. who you

  564. say you

  565. are?

  566. In verse

  567. 34

  568. Jesus said

  569. is this

  570. what you

  571. judged

  572. for yourself

  573. or did

  574. others

  575. determine

  576. it

  577. to you

  578. of me?

  579. Jesus

  580. is being

  581. patient

  582. with Pilate

  583. he's asking

  584. Pilate

  585. to think

  586. for himself

  587. you judge

  588. for yourself

  589. you don't

  590. get to be

  591. a slippery

  592. middle man

  593. the king

  594. of glory

  595. looks you

  596. in the eye

  597. who am I

  598. to you?

  599. Who do you

  600. say I am?

  601. Are you only

  602. going off

  603. of what others

  604. have told you?

  605. Pilate's answer

  606. reveals his heart

  607. in verse

  608. 35

  609. Pilate says

  610. am I a

  611. Jew?

  612. Your own

  613. nation

  614. and your

  615. chief

  616. priests

  617. have

  618. delivered

  619. you

  620. to me

  621. what is

  622. it

  623. that you

  624. have

  625. done?

  626. See

  627. Pilate

  628. refused

  629. to bow

  630. his heart

  631. in humility

  632. to Jesus

  633. and by

  634. doing

  635. that

  636. by remaining

  637. proud

  638. and standing

  639. before him

  640. he's missing

  641. out on the

  642. best news

  643. for his

  644. body and his

  645. soul now

  646. and forever

  647. more

  648. it's possible

  649. to be that

  650. close to the

  651. king of glory

  652. and to stand

  653. in pride

  654. against him

  655. missing out

  656. on the most

  657. glorious news

  658. for your

  659. soul

  660. and your

  661. body now

  662. and forever

  663. more

  664. in verse

  665. 36

  666. Jesus

  667. declares

  668. he is a

  669. king

  670. Jesus

  671. says

  672. my

  673. kingdom

  674. is not

  675. of this

  676. world

  677. if my

  678. kingdom

  679. were of

  680. this

  681. world

  682. then would

  683. my

  684. servants

  685. not

  686. fight

  687. I

  688. would

  689. not

  690. be

  691. delivered

  692. to the

  693. Jews

  694. my

  695. army

  696. would

  697. stand

  698. with

  699. me

  700. we

  701. would

  702. not

  703. be

  704. having

  705. this

  706. conversation

  707. so

  708. Jesus

  709. says

  710. for

  711. this

  712. reason

  713. you

  714. can

  715. tell

  716. clearly

  717. my

  718. kingdom

  719. is

  720. not

  721. of

  722. this

  723. world

  724. so

  725. now

  726. Jesus

  727. has

  728. owned

  729. the

  730. fact

  731. that

  732. he

  733. is

  734. a

  735. king

  736. he

  737. has

  738. a

  739. kingdom

  740. his

  741. kingdom

  742. is

  743. not

  744. of

  745. this

  746. world

  747. in

  748. another

  749. twist

  750. of

  751. irony

  752. his

  753. passive

  754. surrender

  755. to

  756. the

  757. Jewish

  758. leaders

  759. and

  760. to

  761. Pilate

  762. it

  763. proves

  764. his

  765. kingdom

  766. is

  767. of

  768. another

  769. world

  770. in

  771. Matthew

  772. 416

  773. quoting

  774. Isaiah

  775. 9

  776. 2

  777. we

  778. read

  779. that

  780. Jesus

  781. would

  782. come

  783. to

  784. a

  785. people

  786. dwelling

  787. in

  788. darkness

  789. they

  790. would

  791. see

  792. a

  793. great

  794. light

  795. the

  796. sun

  797. would

  798. be

  799. dawning

  800. in

  801. the

  802. shadow

  803. of

  804. death

  805. that's

  806. why

  807. Jesus

  808. came

  809. to

  810. this

  811. world

  812. is

  813. to

  814. transfer

  815. prisoners

  816. who

  817. are

  818. in

  819. darkness

  820. into

  821. his

  822. heavenly

  823. kingdom

  824. of

  825. light

  826. in

  827. verse

  828. 37

  829. Peter

  830. said

  831. to

  832. Jesus

  833. are

  834. you

  835. a

  836. king

  837. then

  838. Jesus

  839. replies

  840. you

  841. said

  842. I

  843. am

  844. a

  845. king

  846. see

  847. it's

  848. possible

  849. to

  850. be

  851. like

  852. Pilate

  853. and

  854. to

  855. be

  856. so

  857. entangled

  858. in

  859. our

  860. own

  861. little

  862. kingdoms

  863. that

  864. we

  865. live

  866. as

  867. if

  868. Christ

  869. were

  870. dethroned

  871. it's

  872. possible

  873. but

  874. we

  875. belong

  876. to

  877. a

  878. spiritual

  879. kingdom

  880. we

  881. belong

  882. to

  883. this

  884. glorious

  885. kingdom

  886. of

  887. heaven

  888. the

  889. kingdom

  890. of

  891. light

  892. one

  893. commentator

  894. pointed

  895. out

  896. that

  897. the

  898. subjects

  899. of

  900. Christ

  901. kingdom

  902. are

  903. not

  904. of

  905. the

  906. world

  907. they

  908. are

  909. chosen

  910. and

  911. called

  912. out

  913. of

  914. it

  915. the

  916. kingdom

  917. itself

  918. does

  919. not

  920. appear

  921. in

  922. worldly

  923. pomp

  924. or

  925. splendor

  926. nor

  927. is

  928. it

  929. supported

  930. by

  931. worldly

  932. force

  933. all

  934. that

  935. is

  936. carnal

  937. sensual

  938. and

  939. worldly

  940. must

  941. be

  942. removed

  943. from

  944. our

  945. conceptions

  946. of

  947. Christ

  948. kingdom

  949. Jesus

  950. declares

  951. this is

  952. why

  953. I

  954. was

  955. born

  956. it's

  957. for

  958. this

  959. reason

  960. that

  961. I

  962. came

  963. into

  964. the

  965. world

  966. because

  967. all

  968. you

  969. have

  970. gone

  971. astray

  972. like

  973. sheep

  974. you've

  975. each

  976. turned

  977. to

  978. your

  979. own

  980. way

  981. but

  982. I

  983. came

  984. as

  985. the

  986. king

  987. of

  988. heaven

  989. to

  990. transfer

  991. you

  992. who

  993. were

  994. prisoners

  995. in

  996. bondage

  997. and

  998. darkness

  999. into

  1000. my

  1001. heavenly

  1002. kingdom

  1003. of

  1004. light

  1005. God

  1006. the

  1007. fourth

  1008. reason

  1009. God

  1010. the

  1011. son

  1012. came

  1013. into

  1014. the

  1015. world

  1016. was

  1017. to

  1018. declare

  1019. truth

  1020. to

  1021. you

  1022. who

  1023. were

  1024. once

  1025. deceived

  1026. by

  1027. Satan's

  1028. lies

  1029. all

  1030. of

  1031. us

  1032. were

  1033. deceived

  1034. by

  1035. Satan's

  1036. lies

  1037. that's

  1038. our

  1039. natural

  1040. condition

  1041. that's

  1042. how

  1043. we're

  1044. born

  1045. but

  1046. God

  1047. the

  1048. son

  1049. came

  1050. into

  1051. this

  1052. world

  1053. to

  1054. declare

  1055. truth

  1056. and

  1057. those

  1058. who

  1059. hear

  1060. the

  1061. truth

  1062. that

  1063. he

  1064. declares

  1065. will

  1066. follow

  1067. his

  1068. voice

  1069. in

  1070. verse

  1071. 37

  1072. Jesus

  1073. says

  1074. to

  1075. this

  1076. end

  1077. was

  1078. I

  1079. born

  1080. God

  1081. the

  1082. son

  1083. according

  1084. to

  1085. his

  1086. human

  1087. nature

  1088. is

  1089. reflecting

  1090. on

  1091. his

  1092. own

  1093. incarnation

  1094. I

  1095. was

  1096. born

  1097. of

  1098. a

  1099. virgin

  1100. conceived

  1101. by

  1102. the

  1103. Holy

  1104. Spirit

  1105. in

  1106. a

  1107. very

  1108. miraculous

  1109. manner

  1110. not

  1111. inheriting

  1112. the curse

  1113. of sin

  1114. from

  1115. Adam's

  1116. line

  1117. that's

  1118. why

  1119. God

  1120. the

  1121. son

  1122. was

  1123. born

  1124. and

  1125. it's

  1126. for

  1127. this

  1128. cause

  1129. that

  1130. I

  1131. came

  1132. into

  1133. the

  1134. world

  1135. Jesus

  1136. says

  1137. in

  1138. verse

  1139. 37

  1140. his

  1141. mission

  1142. was

  1143. to

  1144. bear

  1145. witness

  1146. unto

  1147. the

  1148. truth

  1149. being

  1150. image

  1151. bearers

  1152. of

  1153. God

  1154. every

  1155. single

  1156. person

  1157. knows

  1158. they

  1159. are

  1160. living

  1161. in

  1162. darkness

  1163. Romans

  1164. 1

  1165. 18

  1166. says

  1167. that

  1168. the

  1169. wrath

  1170. of

  1171. God

  1172. is

  1173. revealed

  1174. from

  1175. heaven

  1176. against

  1177. all

  1178. who

  1179. by

  1180. their

  1181. unrighteousness

  1182. suppress

  1183. the

  1184. truth

  1185. the

  1186. truth

  1187. and

  1188. faithfulness

  1189. of

  1190. God

  1191. in

  1192. his

  1193. word

  1194. and

  1195. promises

  1196. all

  1197. of

  1198. God's

  1199. actions

  1200. and

  1201. revelations

  1202. and

  1203. all

  1204. of

  1205. redemptive

  1206. history

  1207. are

  1208. what

  1209. Christ

  1210. comes

  1211. to

  1212. most

  1213. clearly

  1214. reveal

  1215. and

  1216. accomplish

  1217. and

  1218. fulfill

  1219. Jesus

  1220. Christ

  1221. himself

  1222. came

  1223. as

  1224. the

  1225. truth

  1226. he

  1227. is

  1228. the

  1229. true

  1230. God

  1231. and

  1232. the

  1233. true

  1234. man

  1235. the

  1236. truth

  1237. of

  1238. all

  1239. the

  1241. transactions

  1242. all

  1243. the

  1244. types

  1245. all

  1246. the

  1247. promises

  1248. all

  1249. the

  1250. prophecies

  1251. Jesus

  1252. Christ

  1253. came

  1254. to

  1255. declare

  1256. and

  1257. reveal

  1258. to

  1259. everyone

  1260. who

  1261. will

  1262. hear

  1263. his

  1264. voice

  1265. and

  1266. he

  1267. will

  1268. not

  1269. fail

  1270. in

  1271. his

  1272. mission

  1273. notice

  1274. what

  1275. Jesus

  1276. says

  1277. at

  1278. the

  1279. end

  1280. of

  1281. verse

  1282. 37

  1283. everyone

  1284. that

  1285. is

  1286. of

  1287. the

  1288. truth

  1289. heareth

  1290. my

  1291. voice

  1292. if a

  1293. person

  1294. does

  1295. not

  1296. believe

  1297. they

  1300. the

  1301. truth

  1302. they

  1303. are

  1304. deceiving

  1305. themselves

  1306. they

  1307. are

  1308. suppressing

  1309. God's

  1310. truth

  1311. by their

  1312. unrighteousness

  1313. in

  1314. verse 38

  1315. Pilate

  1316. said to

  1317. him

  1318. what

  1319. is

  1320. truth

  1321. Pilate

  1322. commits

  1323. two

  1324. sins

  1325. at

  1326. least

  1327. here

  1328. he's

  1329. suppressing

  1330. the

  1331. truth

  1332. by

  1333. his

  1334. unbelief

  1335. and

  1336. he's

  1337. also

  1338. misusing

  1339. the

  1340. office

  1341. God

  1342. appointed

  1343. him

  1344. to

  1345. he's

  1346. ruling

  1347. with

  1348. the

  1349. authority

  1350. God

  1351. put

  1352. in

  1353. his

  1354. hands

  1355. but

  1356. he's

  1357. doing

  1358. it

  1359. unjustly

  1360. and

  1361. here

  1362. before

  1363. him

  1364. stands

  1365. Jesus

  1366. Christ

  1367. God

  1368. the

  1369. Son

  1370. the

  1371. living

  1372. God

  1373. the

  1374. King

  1375. of

  1376. the

  1377. world

  1378. in

  1379. verse 38

  1380. after

  1381. Pilate

  1382. said

  1383. this

  1384. he

  1385. went

  1386. out

  1387. to

  1388. the

  1389. Jews

  1390. he

  1391. had

  1392. the

  1393. opportunity

  1394. to

  1395. hear

  1396. from

  1397. God

  1398. himself

  1399. the

  1400. way

  1401. the

  1402. truth

  1403. the

  1404. life

  1405. what

  1406. is

  1407. truth

  1408. he

  1409. wouldn't

  1410. even

  1411. pause

  1412. to

  1413. be

  1414. taught

  1415. he

  1416. immediately

  1417. went

  1418. back

  1419. out

  1420. to

  1421. the

  1422. Jews

  1423. following

  1424. his

  1425. heart

  1426. holding

  1427. on

  1428. to

  1429. his

  1430. little

  1431. kingdom

  1432. even

  1433. though

  1434. Pilate

  1435. was

  1563. for

  1564. me

  1565. to

  1566. this

  1567. end

  1568. I

  1569. was

  1578. I

  1579. came

  1580. to

  1581. this

  1583. I

  1584. came

  1585. to

  1586. declare

  1587. the

  1588. truth

  1589. of

  1590. God

  1591. to

  1592. you

  1593. who

  1594. were

  1595. once

  1596. deceived

  1597. by

  1598. the

  1599. lies

  1600. of

  1601. Satan

  1602. if

  1603. you

  1604. hear

  1605. my

  1606. voice

  1607. of

  1608. truth

  1609. you

  1613. well

  1614. the

  1615. fifth

  1616. and

  1617. final

  1618. reason

  1619. I

  1620. see

  1621. in

  1622. this

  1623. passage

  1624. for

  1625. why

  1626. God

  1627. the

  1628. son

  1629. came

  1630. into

  1631. the

  1632. world

  1633. it

  1634. was

  1635. to

  1636. be

  1637. the

  1638. Passover

  1639. lamb

  1640. so

  1641. that

  1642. criminals

  1643. like

  1644. you

  1645. and

  1646. me

  1647. could

  1648. be

  1649. called

  1650. sons

  1651. of

  1652. God

  1653. Jesus

  1654. came

  1655. to

  1656. be

  1657. the

  1658. Passover

  1659. lamb

  1660. so

  1661. that

  1662. criminals

  1663. like

  1664. you

  1665. and

  1666. me

  1667. could

  1668. be

  1669. called

  1670. sons

  1671. of

  1672. God

  1673. in

  1674. verse

  1675. 39

  1676. Pilate

  1677. says

  1678. to

  1679. the

  1680. Jews

  1681. you

  1682. have

  1683. a

  1684. custom

  1685. that

  1686. I

  1687. should

  1688. release

  1689. unto

  1690. you

  1691. one

  1692. criminal

  1693. at

  1694. Passover

  1695. Pilate

  1696. was

  1697. eager

  1698. to

  1699. please

  1700. the

  1701. mob

  1702. the

  1703. people

  1704. they

  1705. had

  1706. all

  1707. the

  1708. power

  1709. he

  1710. was

  1711. the

  1712. new

  1713. guy

  1714. trying

  1715. to

  1716. play

  1717. by

  1718. their

  1719. rules

  1720. he

  1721. was

  1722. negotiating

  1723. with

  1724. them

  1725. he

  1726. would

  1727. use

  1728. their

  1729. own

  1730. customs

  1731. to

  1732. try

  1733. to

  1734. appease

  1735. them

  1736. so

  1737. that

  1738. he

  1739. could

  1740. hold

  1741. on

  1742. to

  1743. his

  1744. power

  1745. the

  1746. Jews

  1747. knew

  1748. they

  1749. could

  1750. use

  1751. this

  1752. leverage

  1753. and

  1754. get

  1755. whatever

  1756. they

  1757. wanted

  1758. out

  1759. of

  1760. this

  1761. man

  1762. this

  1763. puppet

  1764. and

  1765. so

  1766. Pilate

  1767. asked

  1768. them

  1769. in

  1770. verse

  1771. 39

  1772. do

  1773. you

  1774. choose

  1775. therefore

  1776. that

  1777. I

  1778. release

  1779. to

  1780. you

  1781. the

  1782. king

  1783. of

  1784. the

  1785. Jews

  1786. he

  1787. can't

  1788. help

  1789. getting

  1790. a

  1791. jab

  1792. in

  1793. at

  1794. them

  1795. the

  1796. people

  1797. cannot

  1798. choose

  1799. the

  1800. right

  1801. thing

  1802. according

  1803. to

  1804. their

  1805. will

  1806. they

  1807. are

  1808. so

  1809. bound

  1810. in

  1811. sin

  1812. they

  1813. cannot

  1814. choose

  1815. their

  1816. own

  1817. king

  1818. in

  1819. sin

  1820. every

  1821. one

  1822. of

  1823. us

  1824. chooses

  1825. to

  1826. use

  1827. whatever

  1828. power

  1829. we

  1830. have

  1831. and

  1832. unless

  1833. God

  1834. regenerates

  1835. you

  1836. and

  1837. unbinds

  1838. that

  1839. fallen

  1840. will

  1841. you

  1842. will

  1843. never

  1844. choose

  1845. God

  1846. nor

  1847. would

  1848. I

  1849. if

  1850. Jesus

  1851. is

  1852. your

  1853. king

  1854. it's

  1855. because

  1856. God

  1857. chose

  1858. you

  1859. and

  1860. the

  1861. Jews

  1862. use

  1863. their

  1864. power

  1865. here

  1866. to

  1867. get

  1868. rid

  1869. of

  1870. what

  1871. they

  1872. considered

  1873. their

  1874. biggest

  1875. threat

  1876. everybody's

  1877. grabbing

  1878. grabbing

  1879. what they

  1880. can

  1881. in

  1882. this

  1883. life

  1884. Barabbas

  1885. was a

  1886. thief

  1887. he

  1888. grabbed

  1889. what

  1890. was

  1891. not

  1892. his

  1893. Pilate

  1894. was

  1895. grabbing

  1896. hold

  1897. of

  1898. the

  1899. little

  1900. power

  1901. God

  1902. gave

  1903. him

  1904. thinking

  1905. that

  1906. it

  1907. was

  1908. his

  1909. own

  1910. scheming

  1911. that

  1912. put

  1913. him

  1914. in

  1915. that

  1916. spot

  1917. and

  1918. the

  1919. Jews

  1920. did

  1921. not

  1922. want

  1923. to

  1924. let

  1925. go

  1926. of

  1927. all

  1928. the

  1929. power

  1930. they

  1931. held

  1932. because

  1933. of

  1934. their

  1935. religion

  1936. and

  1937. so

  1938. in

  1939. verse

  1940. 40

  1941. they

  1942. cried

  1943. again

  1944. saying

  1945. not

  1946. this

  1947. man

  1948. Pilate

  1949. calls

  1950. him

  1951. the

  1952. king

  1953. of

  1956. they

  1957. call

  1958. him

  1959. this

  1960. man

  1961. but

  1962. Barabbas

  1963. now

  1964. Barabbas

  1965. was

  1966. a

  1967. robber

  1968. it's

  1969. no

  1970. accident

  1971. in

  1972. God's

  1973. providence

  1974. that

  1975. the man

  1976. that

  1977. would

  1978. be

  1979. released

  1980. the

  1981. criminal

  1982. that

  1983. would

  1984. be

  1985. set

  1986. free

  1987. was

  1988. named

  1989. Barabbas

  1990. if

  1991. you're

  1992. familiar

  1993. with

  1994. Jewish

  1995. names

  1996. you know

  1997. Bar

  1998. means

  1999. son

  2000. and

  2001. Abba

  2002. means

  2003. father

  2004. Bar

  2005. Abba

  2006. the

  2007. son

  2008. of

  2009. the

  2010. father

  2011. though

  2012. he

  2013. was

  2014. a

  2015. criminal

  2016. so

  2017. deserving

  2018. of

  2019. punishment

  2020. he

  2021. was

  2022. let

  2023. go

  2024. he

  2025. would

  2026. be

  2027. perfectly

  2028. free

  2029. because

  2030. Christ

  2031. God

  2032. the

  2033. son

  2034. was

  2035. taken

  2036. captive

  2037. condemned

  2038. and

  2039. died

  2040. we

  2041. all

  2042. like

  2043. sheep

  2044. deserve

  2045. to

  2046. die

  2047. if

  2048. left

  2049. to

  2050. ourselves

  2051. we're

  2052. all

  2053. criminals

  2054. before

  2055. a

  2056. holy

  2057. and

  2058. just

  2059. God

  2060. we've

  2061. turned

  2062. our

  2063. own

  2064. way

  2065. Augustine

  2066. declared

  2067. what we

  2068. believe

  2069. that

  2070. God

  2071. chooses

  2072. us

  2073. not

  2074. because

  2075. we

  2076. believe

  2077. but

  2078. that

  2079. we

  2080. may

  2081. believe

  2082. Ephesians

  2083. 1

  2084. 4

  2085. says

  2086. that

  2087. God

  2088. chooses

  2089. us

  2090. in

  2091. Christ

  2092. and

  2093. he

  2094. did

  2095. this

  2096. before

  2097. the

  2098. foundation

  2099. of

  2100. the

  2101. world

  2102. he

  2103. chooses

  2104. you

  2105. and

  2106. me

  2107. to

  2108. be

  2109. holy

  2110. and

  2111. blameless

  2112. before

  2113. him

  2114. because

  2115. we

  2116. will

  2117. be

  2118. robed

  2119. in

  2120. Christ

  2121. righteousness

  2122. the

  2123. father

  2124. laid

  2125. our

  2126. iniquities

  2127. on

  2128. his

  2129. own

  2130. son

  2131. so that

  2132. we

  2133. who were

  2134. criminals

  2135. like

  2136. Barabbas

  2137. could be

  2138. released

  2139. in Romans

  2140. 8 14

  2141. we read

  2142. that

  2143. all

  2144. who are

  2145. led by

  2146. the spirit

  2147. are sons

  2148. of God

  2149. it's not

  2150. to leave

  2151. daughters

  2152. out

  2153. but it's

  2154. because in

  2155. the ancient

  2156. world

  2157. of the time

  2158. of the early

  2159. church

  2160. the son

  2161. is entitled

  2162. to the

  2163. inheritance

  2164. man

  2165. and woman

  2166. you are

  2167. sons

  2168. of God

  2169. in the

  2170. sense

  2171. that you

  2172. are entitled

  2173. to the

  2174. inheritance

  2175. that God's

  2176. own son

  2177. merited

  2178. for you

  2179. Galatians

  2180. 4 6

  2181. because you

  2182. are sons

  2183. God

  2184. has sent

  2185. the spirit

  2186. of his

  2187. son

  2188. into your

  2189. heart

  2190. and by

  2191. that spirit

  2192. you now

  2193. cry

  2194. Abba

  2195. father

  2196. glory

  2197. be to

  2198. God

  2199. you and

  2200. I are

  2201. like those

  2202. sheep

  2203. stuck in

  2204. the thorns

  2205. with the

  2206. wolves

  2207. coming around

  2208. to devour

  2209. us

  2210. if we

  2211. are left

  2212. on our

  2213. own

  2214. but God

  2215. the son

  2216. became the

  2217. good shepherd

  2218. he came

  2219. to the

  2220. world

  2221. he was

  2222. born

  2223. to be

  2224. your

  2225. perfect

  2226. sinless

  2227. unblemished

  2228. Passover

  2229. lamb

  2230. so that

  2231. criminals

  2232. like you

  2233. and me

  2234. could be

  2235. called

  2236. sons

  2237. of God

  2238. for this

  2239. reason

  2240. that Jesus

  2241. came into

  2242. the world

  2243. if you

  2244. hear his

  2245. voice

  2246. you will

  2247. joyfully

  2248. follow

  2249. your

  2250. good

  2251. shepherd

  2252. all

  2253. glory

  2254. be to

  2255. God

  2256. would you

  2257. pray with

  2258. me

  2259. oh

  2260. Lord

  2261. our

  2262. triune

  2263. God

  2264. father

  2265. son

  2266. holy

  2267. spirit

  2268. what else

  2269. can we

  2270. declare

  2271. but that

  2272. you

  2273. are

  2274. perfect

  2275. love

  2276. you

  2277. prove

  2278. this

  2279. by

  2280. your

  2281. son's

  2282. mission

  2283. thinking

  2284. of

  2285. first

  2286. corinthians

  2287. 13

  2288. we

  2289. praise

  2290. you

  2291. for

  2292. how

  2293. in

  2294. the

  2295. person

  2296. and

  2297. work

  2298. of

  2299. Jesus

  2300. Christ

  2301. you

  2302. have

  2303. rejoiced

  2304. in

  2305. the

  2306. truth

  2307. you

  2308. have

  2309. you

  2310. have

  2311. born

  2312. our

  2313. sins

  2314. and

  2315. even

  2316. now

  2317. as

  2318. you

  2319. shepherd

  2320. our

  2321. souls

  2322. you

  2323. bear

  2324. with

  2325. us

  2326. in

  2327. all

  2328. things

  2329. where

  2330. we

  2331. are

  2332. faithless

  2333. you

  2334. are

  2335. faithful

  2336. believing

  2337. all

  2338. things

  2339. Lord

  2340. where

  2341. we

  2342. look

  2343. at

  2344. our

  2345. lives

  2346. and

  2347. we

  2348. can

  2349. feel

  2350. hopeless

  2351. we

  2352. praise

  2353. you

  2354. for

  2355. Christ

  2356. perfect

  2357. hope

  2358. hoping

  2359. all

  2360. things

  2361. where

  2362. we

  2363. are

  2364. impatient

  2365. where

  2366. we

  2367. buck

  2368. against

  2369. long

  2370. suffering

  2371. Lord

  2372. we

  2373. praise

  2374. you

  2375. that

  2376. Jesus

  2377. Christ

  2378. endured

  2379. all

  2380. things

  2381. on

  2382. our

  2383. behalf

  2384. and

  2385. we

  2386. stand

  2387. here

  2388. simply

  2389. confessing

  2390. Lord

  2391. we

  2392. need

  2393. your

  2394. love

  2395. we

  2396. need

  2397. more

  2398. of

  2399. the

  2400. love

  2401. of

  2402. God

  2403. proven

  2404. through

  2405. Jesus

  2406. Christ

  2407. we

  2408. ask

  2409. that

  2410. by

  2411. the

  2412. power

  2413. of

  2414. your

  2415. spirit

  2416. you

  2417. put

  2418. that

  2419. love

  2420. in

  2421. our

  2422. souls

  2423. more

  2424. love

  2425. for

  2426. you

  2427. Father

  2428. and

  2429. more

  2430. love

  2431. for

  2432. our

  2433. neighbor

  2434. we

  2435. ask

  2436. this

  2437. for

  2438. Christ's

  2439. sake

  2440. and

  2441. for

  2442. his

  2443. glory

  2444. in

  2445. our

  2446. lives

  2447. Amen
