  1. We saw last week in John 20 how Jesus being raised from the dead appeared to the disciples and he appeared to them on the Lord's Day.

  2. He loves to minister on the Lord's Day, the day of his resurrection.

  3. One of the signs that Christ did in this appearance in John 20 was to breathe on the disciples.

  4. I believe this is the ministry of Christ as the great and final prophet.

  5. He's our prophet, priest and king and the Old Testament prophets would do a sign that was really a revelation.

  6. And so by breathing on them, he's showing the apostles, my spirit will be breathed out on you.

  7. And we see that fulfilled in Acts 2.

  8. I believe what we have in John 21 verses 1 through 14 is another sign act.

    John 21:1–14

  9. It's another way that Christ is letting his apostles know how his mission will be carried on through them.

  10. So listen for this as you read these verses.

  11. I'll read it out loud and you can follow along.

  12. When I'm done reading, I'll say this is the word of the Lord.

  13. And if you receive it as God's inspired, infallible, clear and sufficient word, you respond.

  14. Thanks be to God.

  15. After this, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples by the Sea of Tiberias.

  16. He revealed himself in this way.

  17. Simon Peter, Thomas, called the twin, Nathaniel from Cana of Galilee, Zebedee's sons and two others of his disciples were together.

  18. I am going fishing, Simon Peter said to them.

  19. We're coming with you, they told him.

  20. They went out and got into the boat.

  21. But that night they caught nothing.

  22. When daybreak came, Jesus stood on the shore.

  23. But the disciples did not know it was Jesus.

  24. Friends, Jesus called to them.

  25. Do you not?

  26. You don't have any fish, do you?

  27. No, they answered.

  28. Cast the net on the right side of the boat, he told them, and you'll find some.

  29. So they did.

  30. And they were unable to haul it in because of the large number of fish.

  31. The disciple, the one Jesus loved, said to Peter, it is the Lord.

  32. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer clothing around him, for he had taken it off, and plunged into the sea.

  33. Since they were not far from the land, about a hundred yards away, the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish.

  34. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there with fish lying on it in bread.

  35. Bring some of the fish you've just caught, Jesus told them.

  36. So Simon Peter climbed up and hauled the net ashore full of large fish, 153 of them.

  37. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.

  38. Come and have breakfast, Jesus told them.

  39. None of the disciples dared ask him, Who are you?

  40. Because they knew it was the Lord.

  41. Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them.

  42. He did the same with the fish.

  43. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

  44. This is the word of the Lord.

  45. Thanks be to God indeed.

  46. You may be seated.

  47. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  48. Let's pray.

  49. God, we saw how you have brought rain and snow, and now you're bringing forth the green grass and the wheat.

  50. You're faithful to your promise.

  51. We pray that you'll do the same, Lord, with your word as it goes forth.

  52. You promise it will not return void.

  53. It will prosper in your purpose.

  54. I pray, Lord, that as your word goes forth through the ministry of preaching,

  55. I pray that you will drag in more souls to Jesus Christ.

  56. For your glory we ask.

  57. Amen.

  58. I believe this passage is about evangelism.

  59. It's about evangelism.

  60. It's about how Jesus Christ will carry on the mission of his church,

  61. and it will be set in motion by the ministry of the apostles.

  62. That's what he gives us a sign act and a picture about.

  63. So I want to walk through this passage with that in mind.

  64. The lesson, the picture lesson we could say is fishing.

  65. Do you ever have something that you really love and you enjoy, but you're just not good at it?

  66. Maybe opera, for example, or the NBA.

  67. You're never going to be able to dunk a basketball, but you like watching it.

  68. For me, it's fish.

  69. I love fish.

  70. I love to eat fish, whether they're cooked or raw.

  71. I love fish in any form.

  72. I'm really bad at fishing, though.

  73. I cannot catch a fish on my own.

  74. Growing up, my dad did not like to fish, and so we never had a lot of opportunities.

  75. One time, a friend of mine had a lure like this with a hook on either end,

  76. and I got both of those hooks stuck on both of my thumbs.

  77. In our little town, we had to ride our bikes everywhere in Brazil,

  78. and so I had a bandage on each thumb riding around like this,

  79. and I got made fun of a lot.

  80. The reason I share that is because I did have a good experience with fishing,

  81. and so we see a contrast with these disciples' failures that now God blesses greatly.

  82. So for me, the turnaround for fishing was once I was married, my in-laws,

  83. they live on the country in Oklahoma.

  84. Think of all the things they did to set me up for success.

  85. They have a reservoir.

  86. They stock that reservoir.

  87. They have a little fishing boat.

  88. They know all the good spots.

  89. They get the rods ready.

  90. All I have to do is just jump in and do exactly whatever they tell me.

  91. We come back with all the fish.

  92. Then they clean them, and they fry them, and it's amazing.

  93. Fresh fish on the farm.

  94. I think the disciples are a little bit like that here.

  95. God is teaching them by the living Jesus Christ.

  96. There is no greater mission you can be part of than to obey him

  97. and to be part of drawing a perishing soul in to the kingdom of life by the net of God's word.

  98. There's no greater mission.

  99. That's the lesson.

  100. Maybe you feel like that.

  101. You love the Lord Jesus,

  102. but you're a lousy fisher of souls,

  103. and maybe you think you're hopeless.

  104. Maybe you think,

  105. I've been distant from God for so long.

  106. Maybe just this past week,

  107. I've denied God with my life.

  108. I'm barely surviving on my own.

  109. Why should I expect any results of ministering God's word?

  110. In Matthew 117, Jesus said,

  111. Follow me, and I will make you a fisher of men.

  112. In John 21, the living Jesus Christ,

  113. he gives this church this glorious portrait of apostles

  114. bringing a net full of fish in to the Lord.

  115. So, beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  116. today I want to try to prove to you

  117. how the Lord Jesus Christ, who's alive,

  118. how it is that he can make someone like you and like me

  119. also a fisher of souls.

  120. The first lesson is that he makes you see

  121. he is near you even in your ordinary work.

  122. Look at verse 1.

  123. After these things,

  124. Jesus showed himself again to the disciples

  125. at the Sea of Tiberias.

  126. This is the same sea called Galilee

  127. in the northern part of Israel.

  128. Up to this point,

  129. Jesus' other appearances

  130. had all taken place on the Lord's Day.

  131. We walked through that last week.

  132. His congregation had gathered,

  133. the disciples were all in one place,

  134. and the Lord appeared,

  135. and he ministered among them.

  136. And then the next Lord's Day,

  137. to Thomas this time,

  138. he ministered among them.

  139. It was his pleasure to do that.

  140. But here in John 21,

  141. it's the only appearance

  142. after Christ rose from the dead

  143. in this Gospel of John,

  144. in which he does not indicate

  145. the day of the week.

  146. And so that's significant

  147. because it could be any day,

  148. and it could be all,

  149. and every day,

  150. the Lord Jesus is near his disciples.

  151. We go on to read that in this way

  152. he showed himself.

  153. Verse 2,

  154. there were together the disciples,

  155. Simon Peter,

  156. Thomas called Didymus,

  157. which means twin,

  158. Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee,

  159. the sons of Zebedee,

  160. which are James and John,

  161. and then two other disciples,

  162. which are most likely

  163. Andrew and Philip,

  164. because we know

  165. all these disciples

  166. were from that northern region

  167. around Galilee.

  168. So here are those disciples.

  169. They've seen the Lord.

  170. They know he's alive,

  171. but they don't know

  172. what their mission is.

  173. What do we do

  174. in response to this?

  175. They know that his kingdom

  176. is of heaven

  177. and not of earth.

  178. What are we supposed to do

  179. day in, day out,

  180. week in, week out,

  181. as part of this heavenly kingdom

  182. while we remain on earth?

  183. What is it?

  184. So in verse 3,

  185. without further instruction,

  186. Simon Peter says,

  187. I'm going fishing.

  188. And they say to him,

  189. we will go with you also.

  190. So they enter their ship

  191. and they set out.

  192. I don't see this

  193. as a lack of faith

  194. or a sin in any way.

  195. Peter leads the other disciples

  196. in making a living.

  197. It's what they knew how to do.

  198. They're doing the work

  199. God put in their hands to do.

  200. They're providing

  201. for their families.

  202. We can conclude

  203. that it's biblical and wise

  204. for fishers of souls

  205. to also have marketable skills.

  206. Why?

  207. Because that's the pattern.

  208. They're able to work for bread.

  209. You know, Peter was a tent maker.

  210. And as he was making tents,

  211. he was discipling those

  212. God brought to him

  213. in his ordinary work

  214. every single day of the week.

  215. We read in Acts 28, 30

  216. that when Paul lived in Rome,

  217. he lived there for two whole years.

  218. At his own expense.

  219. And he welcomed everyone who came

  220. and he preached boldly.

  221. So on that night,

  222. these men of Galilee

  223. of the northern part

  224. around the sea,

  225. it's dark.

  226. They're likely hungry.

  227. They're tired.

  228. They're feeling the pressure

  229. of providing for their families.

  230. But they caught nothing.

  231. And they know what they're doing.

  232. They're professional fishermen.

  233. It was God's providence

  234. that they would not catch anything

  235. because there's a much greater lesson

  236. to be learned.

  237. Look at verse four.

  238. When the morning came,

  239. Jesus stood on the shore.

  240. There they are in their ordinary work.

  241. And there's Jesus Christ alive,

  242. the living God.

  243. Where does he want to be?

  244. With his people

  245. in their ordinary work.

  246. He's right there.

  247. The disciples did not know

  248. that it was Jesus, though.

  249. As I was reflecting

  250. on these first few verses,

  251. I thought of many moments

  252. throughout my week

  253. in my ordinary work

  254. where I didn't even know

  255. but Jesus is near me.

  256. Think of the lowest point

  257. you had this week

  258. with your household,

  259. with a relationship,

  260. or maybe with work.

  261. You were low.

  262. Isn't it easy to forget

  263. that our Lord Jesus is alive

  264. and he's with us.

  265. He's near his disciples

  266. every day of the week.

  267. And he loves you

  268. to see that.

  269. If you didn't see it

  270. in the moment,

  271. look back and remember

  272. just as he stood on the shore

  273. near his disciples,

  274. he stands near you

  275. every day of the week.

  276. He is alive.

  277. And he watches you

  278. in your ordinary work.

  279. And his command,

  280. John 4, 8,

  281. is to draw near to God.

  282. God will draw near to you.

  283. Mark 1, 17,

  284. he says,

  285. follow me.

  286. Walk with me.

  287. As you walk

  288. every day of your life,

  289. no matter what you're doing,

  290. walk with me.

  291. And I will make you

  292. a fisher of men.

  293. There's no greater mission

  294. than to obey

  295. the living Jesus Christ

  296. in this glorious mission

  297. of dragging,

  298. perishing souls

  299. into his kingdom of life.

  300. We do that

  301. by the net of his word.

  302. And this is how

  303. Jesus Christ

  304. makes people like you

  305. and me,

  306. ordinary as we are,

  307. into fishers of souls.

  308. We draw near to him

  309. and we follow

  310. the living Jesus Christ.

  311. He makes you see

  312. that he is near you

  313. in your ordinary work.

  314. So much of our evangelism

  315. will take place there

  316. wherever we are

  317. as we walk with him.

  318. The second lesson is this.

  319. Before making a fisher of souls,

  320. Jesus teaches you

  321. that he alone

  322. gets all the glory

  323. for any results.

  324. Before making you

  325. a fisher of souls,

  326. he teaches you,

  327. and make sure you learn

  328. the lesson,

  329. that he alone

  330. gets all the glory

  331. for any results.

  332. Look at verse 5.

  333. Then Jesus said to them,

  334. Children,

  335. have you any food,

  336. any meat?

  337. Did you catch anything?

  338. They answered him,

  339. No.

  340. And he said to them,

  341. Cast the net

  342. on the right side

  343. of the ship

  344. and you will find some.

  345. Try to think of that scene

  346. from the perspective

  347. of the fish underwater.

  348. We know in the book of Jonah

  349. that God appointed

  350. a great fish.

  351. God caused that great fish

  352. to swallow Jonah

  353. and spit him out

  354. on the shore.

  355. And here we read

  356. that there are 153 big fish.

  357. They're not as big

  358. as the one Jonah had.

  359. They're ones that could

  360. be dragged by a net.

  361. But we can understand

  362. from the context

  363. this would be a fish

  364. that would get you

  365. the best market price.

  366. When you drag this in,

  367. take it into the village

  368. and try to sell it.

  369. These are good sized fish.

  370. There's none of the little ones

  371. that waste everybody's time.

  372. Every fish is worth pulling in.

  373. So there's that school of fish.

  374. All the little ones,

  375. God appoints them

  376. to get weeded out

  377. and just leaves

  378. all the big nice ones

  379. underneath the water.

  380. And he won't let them go

  381. on one side of the boat.

  382. He's going to make them

  383. wait for his instruction.

  384. That's the sovereignty

  385. of God.

  386. A pastor named John Stott,

  387. he pointed out

  388. that to evangelize

  389. doesn't mean

  390. to win souls.

  391. It simply means

  392. to announce

  393. the good news

  394. and leave any results

  395. up to God.

  396. Do the work

  397. of an evangelist.

  398. God has commanded it,

  399. obey and leave

  400. the results to him.

  401. He's the only one

  402. who can give results anyway.

  403. In Matthew 13, 47,

  404. Jesus said,

  405. the kingdom of heaven

  406. is like a net

  407. thrown into the sea

  408. and it gathers fish

  409. of every kind.

  410. Christ in Matthew 13

  411. was already envisioning

  412. this picture lesson

  413. for them.

  414. And beyond that,

  415. he was envisioning

  416. the throne of heaven.

  417. Revelation 7, 8.

  418. John,

  419. the same apostle,

  420. he testifies,

  421. he says,

  422. I beheld

  423. a great multitude

  424. which no man

  425. could number

  426. of all nations,

  427. tribes,

  428. peoples,

  429. and tongues.

  430. And they all stood

  431. before the throne

  432. and before the Lamb.

  433. And they were clothed

  434. with white robes

  435. and palm branches

  436. in their hands.

  437. And they cried

  438. with a loud voice

  439. saying,

  440. Salvation belongs

  441. to our God

  442. which sitteth

  443. upon the throne

  444. and unto the Lamb.

  445. And if Jesus

  446. is your Savior

  447. and your Lord,

  448. you are one of those fish.

  449. You are one of those

  450. of that great number

  451. from every people,

  452. nation,

  453. tribe,

  454. and tongue.

  455. And the word

  456. of God went out

  457. like a net

  458. and it captured you

  459. and it brought you

  460. to Jesus.

  461. God teaches us

  462. that he alone

  463. gets all the glory

  464. for any results.

  465. Paul testified of this

  466. in Romans 11, 36.

  467. For of him

  468. and through him

  469. and to him

  470. are all things

  471. to whom be glory

  472. forever.

  473. Amen.

  474. What do we do

  475. in response

  476. to this awareness

  477. that God gets

  478. all the glory

  479. and he will teach us

  480. that one way

  481. or the other?

  482. We draw near to him.

  483. We follow him

  484. and we ask him

  485. to make us

  486. into fishers of men

  487. knowing that any results

  488. will come from his

  489. appointment alone.

  490. The third lesson

  491. is this.

  492. The living Jesus Christ,

  493. he calls you

  494. to love him

  495. above the results

  496. of fishing.

  497. The living Jesus Christ

  498. calls you and me

  499. to love him,

  500. the person of Jesus,

  501. above any results.

  502. Verse 7,

  503. Therefore,

  504. that disciple

  505. whom Jesus loved,

  506. that's John

  507. referring to himself,

  508. he said to Peter,

  509. It is the Lord.

  510. When Peter heard that,

  511. it is the Lord

  512. here in our

  513. ordinary work.

  514. We can assume

  515. Peter's ears

  516. were thrilled

  517. to hear.

  518. The Lord,

  519. he was going to

  520. drop everything else.

  521. When Simon Peter

  522. heard this,

  523. he put his fishing

  524. cloak around himself

  525. for he had taken it off.

  526. So Peter's hands

  527. let go of the net.

  528. Instead,

  529. they pick up the clothes

  530. to be presentable

  531. to his king

  532. and he cast himself

  533. into the sea.

  534. Peter couldn't bear

  535. to stay away

  536. from Christ

  537. a moment longer

  538. than he had to.

  539. Then in verse 8,

  540. the other disciples

  541. came in a little ship

  542. because they weren't

  543. far from land.

  544. It was about

  545. 200 cubits

  546. and they were

  547. dragging the net

  548. with the fishes

  549. while the Lord Jesus

  550. stood on the shore

  551. waiting for them.

  552. Can you see that

  553. in your mind's eye?

  554. This glorious scene?

  555. This is a picture

  556. of how God

  557. brings souls

  558. into his kingdom.

  559. The Lord stands

  560. on the shore.

  561. He stands in heaven.

  562. The Lord appoints

  563. the fish.

  564. He appoints

  565. the souls

  566. he will bring in.

  567. Then he appoints

  568. and equips

  569. and instructs

  570. his fishermen.

  571. When they obey,

  572. they bring those souls

  573. to present them

  574. with satisfaction

  575. and joy

  576. back to Christ himself.

  577. Matthew 6, 33.

  578. We're told to seek first

  579. the kingdom of God

  580. and his righteousness

  581. and all these things

  582. he will add

  583. unto you.

  584. Do what he has commanded.

  585. Obey him.

  586. There's no greater mission

  587. we could be part of

  588. than to casting

  589. the net of his word,

  590. watching him

  591. put into that net

  592. every soul

  593. he has appointed

  594. unto eternal life.

  595. And then all that we do

  596. is like these

  597. stinky,

  598. smelly disciples

  599. that are sweaty.

  600. We labored,

  601. but we did nothing.

  602. We failed

  603. when we were

  604. on our own strength.

  605. We obeyed you.

  606. You did it all.

  607. And we dragged them

  608. back up,

  609. presenting it

  610. to the Lord.

  611. Back to you, Lord.

  612. This is your work.

  613. It's unto you.

  614. Receive what is your due.

  615. All glory be to God.

  616. Follow him.

  617. He is alive.

  618. And as you follow him,

  619. he promises

  620. he will make you

  621. and me

  622. and each one

  623. a fisher

  624. of souls.

  625. There's no better mission

  626. we could be part of him.

  627. So draw near to God.

  628. Follow him.

  629. He's alive.

  630. Fourth lesson I see

  631. is this.

  632. The living Jesus Christ,

  633. he makes all the provisions

  634. to nourish

  635. and strengthen you

  636. who he has made

  637. a fisher of souls.

  638. That's a fear,

  639. isn't it?

  640. I'm going to obey the Lord.

  641. I'm going to seek

  642. first his kingdom.

  643. What about my needs?

  644. What about all those things

  645. I want

  646. and count on in life?

  647. I believe we see

  648. in the next few verses

  649. how he makes

  650. all the provisions

  651. and he nourishes

  652. and strengthens

  653. every single one

  654. he makes into

  655. a fisher of souls.

  656. In verse 9,

  657. we see as soon

  658. as they had come to land,

  659. they saw a fire

  660. of coals there

  661. and fish

  662. laid on

  663. the fire.

  664. The best fish

  665. I've ever eaten

  666. in my life

  667. was in

  668. northern Brazil,

  669. a little town

  670. where my parents

  671. still live

  672. called Boa Vista.

  673. The name of the fish

  674. is tambaki

  675. and it's got

  676. fat inside

  677. of the skin

  678. and so they cut it

  679. in half

  680. and they set

  681. the skin of the fish

  682. on the coals

  683. and it just slow cooks

  684. with rock salt on top

  685. as it starts to bubble

  686. and boil

  687. and get crispy

  688. on the edges

  689. and it's a flaky

  690. white fish.

  691. It's so good

  692. and I'm imagining

  693. what Jesus made here

  694. even if it's that simple.

  695. It's bread

  696. on the coals

  697. or fish on the coals

  698. with some bread.

  699. What a meal, right?

  700. Even if it's simple,

  701. it's their daily bread.

  702. It's nourishing

  703. those whom he's called.

  704. We read in 2nd

  705. Colossians 2, 19

  706. that the whole body,

  707. that's the church,

  708. every single member

  709. of the body

  710. is nourished

  711. and grows

  712. from God.

  713. It comes from him.

  714. Heaven is a banquet

  715. but as pilgrims

  716. and sojourners

  717. in this life,

  718. it's daily bread.

  719. It's manna

  720. and it's enough.

  721. It nourishes

  722. and strengthens us.

  723. 1 Timothy 4, 6

  724. Paul wrote to Timothy

  725. as he would

  726. open up God's word

  727. to the church.

  728. He said,

  729. Nourish God's people

  730. with the words

  731. of the faith

  732. and the good teaching

  733. that you follow

  734. as a servant

  735. of the living Jesus Christ.

  736. And Peter learned

  737. the source

  738. of a disciple's strength.

  739. In 1 Peter 5, 10

  740. Peter wrote,

  741. The God of all grace

  742. will strengthen you, church.

  743. He could testify.

  744. God had done that to him

  745. and that's what he's writing

  746. to encourage the church

  747. as well,

  748. inspired by the spirit.

  749. Then in verse 10,

  750. Jesus said to them,

  751. Bring of the fish

  752. which you have now caught.

  753. Verse 11,

  754. Simon Peter went up

  755. and he drew the net

  756. to land full of big fish.

  757. 153 of them.

  758. I told you,

  759. Jesus is acting like a prophet.

  760. He's giving them

  761. a sign act

  762. of something that will happen.

  763. How will this unfold

  764. in redemptive history?

  765. Well, when we finish

  766. the gospel of John

  767. and we begin reading

  768. the history of the church

  769. in the book of Acts,

  770. we read in Acts 2, 40

  771. that Peter was the one

  772. God appointed to stand up

  773. to preach the gospel

  774. and not just 153,

  775. but over 3,000

  776. repented and believed

  777. and were added

  778. to their number

  779. that day.

  780. God had given simple means,

  781. a simple net,

  782. just as he's given the church

  783. the simple,

  784. ordinary means of grace,

  785. the ministry of the word,

  786. prayer,

  787. sacraments,

  788. the Lord's Supper

  789. and baptism.

  790. It's ordinary,

  791. but he's ordained it.

  792. It's simple.

  793. That's fine.

  794. Let us be ordinary

  795. in these means

  796. and let him be extraordinary.

  797. All glory be to God.

  798. God's means of saving souls

  799. like these nets

  800. as they're being drug

  801. full of these fish,

  802. they don't fail.

  803. John makes note of that.

  804. It was full.

  805. These are experienced fishermen

  806. who spent hours

  807. mending nets

  808. and tying them back,

  809. but these nets

  810. that day did not break.

  811. They were simply obeying

  812. what Christ commanded

  813. and the means were sufficient.

  814. The nets do not break.

  815. Now I want to draw your attention

  816. to a verb

  817. that's used three times here.

  818. Two times here

  819. and then one time previously.

  820. So look at verse six.

  821. The verb in verse six

  822. is to draw.

  823. It says that they were not able

  824. to drag them up themselves,

  825. but then in verse 11,

  826. Peter drew

  827. or dragged the net

  828. to the land

  829. full of the great fish.

  830. The reason I highlight that verb

  831. is because Jesus

  832. uses that same verb

  833. in John chapter 12,

    John 12:32

  834. verse 32.

  835. He says,

  836. when I am lifted up

  837. from the earth,

  838. lifted up,

  839. I will draw

  840. all people

  841. to myself.

  842. It's the same verb.

  843. It's the same verb.

  844. It's Christ.

  845. Just as he gives Peter

  846. along with the disciples

  847. the ability now

  848. to draw in this

  849. net full of fish.

  850. Jesus,

  851. by the power

  852. of the Holy Spirit,

  853. draws all men

  854. to himself.

  855. That's what's in view here.

  856. John Gill saw it

  857. this way as well.

  858. He commented,

  859. this is an emblem

  860. of the whole number

  861. of God's elect

  862. brought out

  863. from the waves

  864. to the shore

  865. to Christ

  866. and ultimately

  867. to heaven.

  868. Jesus Christ

  869. makes all the provisions

  870. and he strengthens

  871. every single one

  872. that he calls

  873. and prepares

  874. to be a fisher

  875. of souls.

  876. He wants you

  877. and me

  878. to draw near

  879. to him

  880. to follow him

  881. and trust

  882. that he will

  883. make you

  884. into just that.

  885. There's no greater

  886. mission we can be

  887. part of

  888. than to cast

  889. the net

  890. of the word

  891. and watch

  892. Jesus draw

  893. all men

  894. to himself,

  895. everyone

  896. who has an ear

  897. to hear

  898. and eyes

  899. to see his glory.

  900. Jesus can make

  901. you and me

  902. into fishers

  903. of souls

  904. through our

  905. ordinary work

  906. as we trust

  907. the simple means

  908. he's commanded.

  909. So draw near

  910. to him

  911. and follow him.

  912. Well,

  913. the fifth

  914. and final lesson

  915. I see here

  916. for us today

  917. is that

  918. the living

  919. Jesus Christ,

  920. he abides

  921. with those

  922. that he has

  923. made a fisher

  924. of souls.

  925. He abides

  926. with you

  927. in this work

  928. and he proves

  929. again and again

  930. to you and me

  931. I am alive.

  932. Look at verse 12,

  933. Jesus said to them

  934. come and dine.

  935. He's inviting them

  936. to stay,

  937. to eat,

  938. to abide.

  939. In John 15,

  940. 4,

  941. he had told them

  942. abide in me

  943. and I in you.

  944. In verse 12,

  945. we read that

  946. none of the disciples

  947. had to ask him

  948. who are you

  949. knowing that

  950. it was the Lord.

  951. Isn't that so true?

  952. When you're abiding

  953. with Christ,

  954. you know it.

  955. You know it.

  956. In verse 13,

  957. Jesus then came

  958. and he took the bread

  959. and gave it to them

  960. and also the fish.

  961. Not only did he prepare

  962. and make provisions,

  963. he also personally

  964. is nourishing

  965. and serving them

  966. just like he does

  967. you and me.

  968. The living Jesus Christ,

  969. he's not in a hurry

  970. with you.

  971. He lingers,

  972. he hosts,

  973. he serves,

  974. he communes

  975. and his disciples

  976. abide with him.

  977. Revelation 3.20,

  978. if anyone hears my voice,

  979. I will come in

  980. to him

  981. and dine with him

  982. and he with me.

  983. John makes the comment

  984. in the last verse

  985. of our sermon text,

  986. verse 14,

  987. that this was

  988. the third time

  989. Jesus showed himself.

  990. to his disciples

  991. after he rose

  992. from the dead.

  993. He's dining

  994. and communing

  995. with his disciples

  996. to prove to you

  997. again and again

  998. that he is alive.

  999. There's no greater work

  1000. than walking

  1001. with the living God

  1002. and watching him

  1003. draw in those

  1004. he's appointed to alive

  1005. by the means

  1006. he's commanded.

  1007. Have you gotten

  1008. that experience

1009. maybe in a very small way

  1010. like we read

1011. of sowing a little bit

1012. or watering a little bit

  1013. and watching God

  1014. give the increase

  1015. in the soul

  1016. in a life?

  1017. Isn't it true

1018. that there is no greater

  1019. mission,

  1020. no greater work

1021. we could be part of?

  1022. When we first moved

  1023. to Colorado

  1024. we had one child

  1025. we were happy

  1026. we were very poor

  1027. we were barely

1028. being able to pay our bills

  1029. and climb out

  1030. of student loans

  1031. we were still wanting

1032. to find a biblical church

  1033. we had almost thought

  1034. those don't exist

  1035. in Colorado

  1036. there are many though

1037. now I've come to see

  1038. during that time

  1039. I was

  1040. you might find it

  1041. hard to believe

  1042. but I was able

  1043. to play soccer

1044. once or twice a week

1045. and we had an indoor

  1046. soccer team

  1047. and our team colors

  1048. were Brazil

  1049. we were yellow

1050. and there was one guy

  1051. Pedro

1052. who still is the best

  1053. I'll say he's the best

  1054. soccer player

  1055. I've ever played with

  1056. at least in Colorado

  1057. maybe in the USA

  1058. he's an amazing

  1059. soccer player

1060. and he was on our team

  1061. his story is that

1062. he had crossed the border

  1063. from Mexico

  1064. to the USA

  1065. twice

  1066. one time he was

  1067. with a group

1068. and he was very little

1069. and he had to go back

1070. and then the next time

  1071. his relatives all

  1072. abandoned him

1073. and he was a teenager

  1074. and all alone

  1075. as a teenager

  1076. crossing the desert

  1077. he had stories

1078. of how he almost died

1079. but he didn't make it here

  1080. he got a girlfriend

  1081. they had two children

  1082. and he was working

  1083. a couple jobs

  1084. one of his jobs

  1085. was at McDonald's

1086. and on the soccer team

1087. one of our other friends

  1088. was going through

  1089. a divorce

  1090. and I just commented

  1091. something like

1092. we should pray for him

  1093. and his family

  1094. because we could tell

  1095. he was really down

  1096. that was it

  1097. I didn't do a better job

  1098. of bearing witness

  1099. or sowing a seed

  1100. in God's providence

  1101. though

  1102. there was one night

  1103. where Pedro texted me

1104. if he could just come over

  1105. Andrea was working

  1106. a night shift

  1107. at a nursing home

1108. and so he came over

1109. and he just broke down

1110. he was on his knees

  1111. he was weeping

  1112. he had said

  1113. how he just knew

  1114. there was something

  1115. missing in his life

  1116. a couple of Jehovah

  1117. witnesses

  1118. young people came by

  1119. and knocked

1120. and he tried to talk

  1121. with them

  1122. and he said

  1123. he felt even more

  1124. confused

  1125. and more darkness

  1126. he didn't know

1127. who else to reach out to

  1128. his wife was going

  1129. to leave him

  1130. and his boss lied

  1131. and got him fired

  1132. instead of her

  1133. at McDonald's

  1134. and in that night

  1135. the Lord

  1136. through the simple

  1137. ministry of the word

  1138. I didn't have anything

  1139. to say beyond

  1140. reading some verses

1141. and the Lord gave him

  1142. a new heart I believe

  1143. and the Lord

  1144. started putting his life

  1145. back together

1146. his wife didn't leave him

  1147. a longer story

1148. but the Lord restored him

  1149. back to that job

  1150. he had at McDonald's

1151. he had to keep changing

1152. phones because of his job

1153. he took a job in Pennsylvania

  1154. on an oil rig

1155. and so I lost touch

1156. but I pray for him

1157. when God brings him to mind

1158. and it's such an encouragement

  1159. there's nothing I will do

  1160. it's nothing of me

1161. it's nothing of any one of us

  1162. but God knows

1163. those that he will draw

  1164. to himself

  1165. and when he does

1166. he gets all the glory

1167. we believe Jesus is alive

  1168. he's working

1169. we stay close to him

  1170. he abides

  1171. and he ministers

1172. and we simple people like us

1173. broken with all of our own problems

1174. we get to be like these fishermen

1175. we get to be ones

  1176. who he uses

  1177. to drag another soul

  1178. to the shore

  1179. where Jesus Christ stands

  1180. ready to receive them

1181. we read in Luke 15

1182. there is great joy in heaven

1183. and that joy and rejoicing

1184. is led by the angels

1185. around the throne of God

1186. and it's over one soul

  1187. who believes

  1188. and repents

  1189. who becomes a follower

  1190. of Jesus Christ

1191. we get to be part of this great mission

  1192. don't you want that

1193. you don't want the results

  1194. you want Christ himself

  1195. like Peter

1196. you want to be with him

1197. and as you're with him

1198. he makes you into a fisherman

  1199. of souls

  1200. let's pray that he'll do that

  1201. through us

  1202. in powerful ways

  1203. just one soul

1204. that he'll bring before himself

  1205. for his glory

  1206. let's pray

1207. Lord we ask that you will take

  1208. ordinary people like us

  1209. common

  1210. simple workers

1211. and make us part of this glorious mission

1212. it's your mission on this earth

  1213. the salvation of souls

  1214. Lord

1215. some of us are weary

  1216. and tired

1217. we ask that you please

1218. nourish and strengthen us today

  1219. Lord we confess

1220. you do all the real work

1221. you do all the heavy lifting

  1222. you are the one

  1223. who draw all men

  1224. to yourself

1225. Lord you are the one

  1226. who give the increase

1227. you're the Lord of the harvest

  1228. we praise you that

1229. you have made our hearts free

1230. and so now we rise

  1231. we go forth

  1232. and we follow thee

1233. for your glory we pray

  1234. amen

  1235. we'll take some time

1236. to respond to the long gospel

  1237. that you've heard

1238. I invite you to consider

1239. what is that next step

  1240. of obedience

1241. that God is calling you to today

  1242. maybe some here

1243. you are one of those great fish

  1244. this is the day

  1245. that the net

  1246. of God's word

1247. is drawing you to Christ

  1248. believe

  1249. repent

  1250. follow him

1251. maybe for some of you

  1252. it's

  1253. you need to grow

  1254. as a disciple

  1255. it's not

  1256. it's not about being

  1257. a nominal Christian

  1258. and being part of

  1259. a Christian subculture

  1260. that's not enough

  1261. you want Christ himself

  1262. you want to grow

1263. you want to walk with him

  1264. you want to learn

  1265. what it means

  1266. to commune with him

1267. and for him to prove

  1268. over and over

  1269. he's alive

  1270. and he'll nourish you

  1271. by his word

  1272. be discipled

1273. and grow in your faith

  1274. maybe for some

  1275. it's to

1276. become more of a fisherman

  1277. become a member

  1278. of the body

  1279. be all in

  1280. with his kingdom

  1281. disciple others

  1282. sharpen

  1283. your understanding

  1284. of his word

  1285. and respond

  1286. to the Lord now

  1287. he will draw you

1288. one way or the other

  1289. praise him

  1290. for his work

  1291. in your life

  1292. let's pray

  1293. smth a big ball

  1294. of his bride

  1295. and please

  1296. follow

  1297. it's not a big thing

  1298. though

  1299. here

  1300. and then

  1301. hey

  1302. don't know

  1303. how the other

  1304. but the other

  1305. cycle

  1306. come to me

  1307. where

  1308. this

  1309. Amen.

  1310. Amen.

  1311. Amen.

  1312. Amen.

1313. Well, I invite you to continue responding to the Lord in obedience.

1314. And we'll do this next by taking of the Lord's Supper.

1315. We share the Lord's Supper together every week.

1316. Jesus said, as often as you do this, do it in remembrance of me.

1317. To partake in a worthy manner, according to 1 Corinthians 11, 17 through 34,

1318. we must treasure Christ and examine ourselves.

1319. If you love Jesus Christ and rest in him alone for salvation,

1320. as he has offered to you in the gospel,

1321. if you are a baptized member in good standing of a local church

1322. that preaches the gospel of God's free grace,

1323. and if you are living in an ongoing repentance and gratitude in Christ,

1324. then this supper is for you.

1325. And that includes you who are visitors.

1326. We welcome you as well.

1327. However, if you have not received Christ as your only salvation,

1328. we ask that you abstain from this sacrament now

1329. and instead reflect on the gospel message that you have heard today.

1330. And out of the care for the souls of those who are still younger,

  1331. like children,

1332. we ask that they partake only after being discipled

1333. by a pastor within the church for baptism

1334. as their first act of obedience.

1335. Last week, I explained a little bit.

1336. I want to clarify a bit more.

1337. We believe that Christ is spiritually present with his church.

  1338. Do you believe that?

  1339. Christ is spiritually present,

1340. and he loves to minister among his congregation.

1341. So that's why this is more than a remembrance.

1342. It's an actual spiritual partaking,

1343. a spiritual communing with the living Christ who is with us.

1344. I tried to explain the Zwinglian, you know, reformer.

1345. He said the vessels of the Lord's Supper should be wooden

  1346. because it's just a remembrance.

1347. And then Luther said there's not the Catholic transubstantiation,

1348. but the elements become, you know, the body of Christ

1349. because Christ says this is my body.

1350. And so John Calvin had the mediating position.

1351. Jesus said, yes, this is my body.

1352. This is my blood and do this in remembrance.

1353. So in Acts, we read that Christ is in heaven

1354. waiting until the time of his second coming.

  1355. So he's in heaven,

1356. but he's also bringing refreshing from the presence of the Lord.

1357. So he's also present with his people.

  1358. Both are true.

1359. And that's why the Calvin view of the Lord's Supper is the silver.

1360. It's not wood or gold.

  1361. It's the silver.

1362. It's an already not yet.

1363. He's with us, but he's in heaven.

1364. And one day his kingdom of heaven will be fully on the earth

1365. as the waters cover the seas.

1366. We take this remembering, looking forward and longing for that day.

1367. If you long for Christ returning

1368. and you believe that he is alive and he's with his people,

  1369. then that's what you're proclaiming

1370. when you come up to enjoy the Lord's Supper today.

  1371. You may be served.

  1372. Thank you.

  1373. Thank you.
