  1. We've seen how a covenant is more personal and more binding than a contract.

  2. A covenant is full of love.

  3. And a covenant, it's also something you can count on,

  4. something that is attached to the nature of God himself.

  5. So it's much more enduring than a mere relationship.

  6. And covenant is how the Lord has promised his grace to people like you and me.

  7. Our sermon text today will be all of Galatians 3.

  8. As we walk through these verses, I invite you to listen and think about this question.

  9. How can someone like you and how can someone like me get such glorious covenant blessings?

  10. How is this possible?

  11. Galatians chapter 3.

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  12. This is the Apostle Paul writing to a region in which there are many Christian churches.

  13. This region is called Galatia.

  14. He begins by saying in chapter 3,

  15. Foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you not to obey the truth,

  16. before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly portrayed among you as crucified.

  17. I just want to learn this from you.

  18. Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing of faith?

  19. Are you so foolish?

  20. Having begun in the Spirit, are you now completed in the flesh?

  21. Did you suffer so many things in vain?

  22. If it is indeed in vain.

  23. He therefore, who supplies the Spirit to you and does miracles among you,

  24. does he do it by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith?

  25. Even so, Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.

  26. I know, therefore, that those who are of faith are children of Abraham.

  27. The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith,

  28. preached the good news beforehand to Abraham,

  29. saying,

  30. In you all the nations will be blessed.

  31. So then, those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.

  32. For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse.

  33. For it is written,

  34. Cursed is everyone who doesn't continue in all things that are written in the book of the law and do them.

  35. Now, that no man is justified by the law before God is evident,

  36. for the righteous will live by faith.

  37. The law is not of faith, but the man who does them will live by them.

  38. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us.

  39. For it is written,

  40. Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.

  41. That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ,

  42. that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

  43. Verse 15.

  44. Brothers, speaking in human terms,

  45. Though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it has been confirmed,

  46. no one makes it void or adds to it.

  47. Now, the promises were spoken to Abraham and his offspring.

  48. It doesn't say to descendants as of many, but as of one,

  49. to your offspring, which is Christ.

  50. Now, I say this,

  51. A covenant confirmed beforehand by God in Christ,

  52. the law which came 430 years after does not annul,

  53. so as to make the promise of no effect.

  54. For it is, if the inheritance is of the law,

  55. it is no more of promise.

  56. But God has granted it to Abraham by promise.

  57. Then why is there law?

  58. It was added because of transgressions,

  59. until the offspring should come to whom the promise has been made.

  60. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator.

  61. Now a mediator is not between one, but God is one.

  62. Is the law then against the promises of God?

  63. Certainly not.

  64. For if there had been a law given,

  65. which could make alive,

  66. most certainly righteousness would have been of the law.

  67. But the scripture imprisoned all things under sin,

  68. that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ

  69. might be given to those who believe.

  70. But before faith came,

  71. we were kept in custody under the law,

  72. confined for the faith,

  73. which should afterwards be revealed,

  74. so that the law has become our tutor

  75. to bring us to Christ.

  76. That we might be justified by faith.

  77. But now that faith has come,

  78. we are no longer under a tutor.

  79. For you are all children of God,

  80. through faith in Christ Jesus.

  81. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ

  82. have put on Christ.

  83. There is neither Jew nor Greek.

  84. There is neither slave nor free man.

  85. There is neither male nor female.

  86. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  87. If you are Christ,

  88. then you are Abraham's offspring

  89. and heirs according to the promise.

  90. This is the word of the Lord.

  91. Thanks be to God.

  92. You may be seated.

  93. Let's pray.

  94. Amen.

  95. Oh Lord,

  96. you are a God who keeps your covenant.

  97. Your word endures forever and ever.

  98. Lord,

  99. Lord,

  100. we ask that by the power of your Holy Spirit,

  101. you will apply these glorious promises

  102. to every soul that belongs to you.

  103. Help us to know,

  104. Lord,

  105. by the work of Jesus,

  106. we are heirs with Christ.

  107. to receive this truth

  108. and to live in it.

  109. We ask for your glory.

  110. Amen.

  111. I invite you to picture an airport scene.

  112. There's two characters.

  113. These are two travelers.

  114. But by their outward appearance,

  115. they are very different.

  116. And you can tell.

  117. They both get on the same airplane.

  118. They're both heading to the same place.

  119. One of them is begrudging.

  120. She's used to flying first class.

  121. And now she sees more and more people getting on.

  122. And this seat next to her is open for a little bit longer.

  123. Well,

  124. then comes this second lady.

  125. She's a bag lady.

  126. Do you know what a bag lady is?

  127. Way too many Walmart bags just tied onto her body.

  128. Her hair is a mess.

  129. She's wearing clothes that maybe haven't been washed for quite a while.

  130. And this second lady comes.

  131. And sure enough,

  132. she goes for that one open seat next to the lady that's used to flying first class.

  133. Throughout the flight,

  134. the one that arrived late,

  135. she's just glad she made it on.

  136. That flight was about to take out.

  137. They still let her on.

  138. And she's there.

  139. And she's going to the place she wants to be.

  140. Well,

  141. the first lady has all these opinions and criticisms of her.

  142. And before long,

  143. the flight's getting old.

  144. And she's telling her,

  145. do your hair this way.

  146. You know,

  147. put these things here and fix yourself up a little bit better.

  148. The flight's not pleasant for either one.

  149. This is a little bit like the church in this region of Galatia.

  150. You had those who were from the line of Judah.

  151. They're used to being that first class standing.

  152. And the temple was set up that way.

  153. And now there are these Gentiles that are a mess.

  154. And yes,

  155. their lives,

  156. God will clean them up.

  157. But Paul's message to these churches is that there are no second class citizens.

  158. There's no first class in the church and second class.

  159. You are all heirs with Christ.

  160. You are all purchased by him.

  161. You are in Christ.

  162. And he will carry you to your place of rest.

  163. So as we walk through these verses,

  164. I want to encourage you with this truth.

  165. How can someone like you

  166. picture yourself at your worst in your life?

  167. How can that person

  168. have confidence

  169. that these blessings of the covenant

  170. are for you?

  171. And how can they be for someone like me?

  172. Number one,

  173. reject the lie

  174. that covenant blessings depend on you.

  175. Reject the lie

  176. that God's covenant blessings depend on you.

  177. That's what Paul writes

  178. in verses one,

  179. two,

  180. and three.

  181. Look there with me.

  182. Foolish Galatians,

  183. who has bewitched you

  184. not to obey the truth

  185. before whose eyes

  186. Jesus Christ

  187. was openly portrayed among you

  188. as crucified.

  189. Paul's saying,

  190. I preached to you.

  191. I preached the crucifixion of Jesus,

  192. the son of God.

  193. You saw him with the eyes of faith.

  194. Verse two,

  195. I just want to learn this from you.

  196. Did you receive the spirit

  197. by works of the law

  198. or by the hearing of faith?

  199. Are you so foolish?

  200. He uses as strong of language here

  201. as he uses anywhere else.

  202. He says,

  203. who has bewitched you?

  204. And he calls them fools twice.

  205. You're a fool.

  206. They got bewitched.

  207. And he's writing to Christians

  208. in the church.

  209. See,

  210. you and I can,

  211. we can be deceived.

  212. There can be lies

  213. that creep into our thinking

  214. just the same.

  215. This is the only time

  216. in the New Testament

  217. where the word bewitched is used.

  218. It means to entice.

  219. It can be charming,

  220. but it's malicious.

  221. It's to deceive.

  222. It's like setting a bowl of soup

  223. with only two drops of poison in it.

  224. You take that and you die.

  225. To be bewitched,

  226. it has connotations

  227. of coming from the darkness,

  228. from a demon.

  229. And it's a fool

  230. who would fall for this trap.

  231. Why can you and I be fools?

  232. Why do we need to beware

  233. of this deception?

  234. We've all been fooled before.

  235. We get fooled for one of two reasons.

  236. We're fooled

  237. either because we want

  238. to get something good,

  239. they sucker you in,

  240. or because we fear

  241. something bad.

  242. See,

  243. the new-to-faith Gentiles

  244. in this region,

  245. they wanted to make sure

  246. that they can hold on

  247. to their salvation.

  248. They're wanting to make sure

  249. they can have this good thing.

  250. It's like that lady

  251. on the airplane

  252. willing to change her hair,

  253. willing to do all these things

  254. this other lady's telling her to

  255. to make sure

  256. that she's doing it right

  257. as she flies.

  258. But the Jewish Christians

  259. in Galatia,

  260. they fear losing

  261. God's blessing

  262. by not keeping

  263. all of the ceremonial laws,

  264. by not continuing in those.

  265. And that's why

  266. you can be fooled.

  267. In our sin of pride,

  268. we want to be

  269. first-class Christians.

  270. We all want to be that.

  271. We want to please God,

  272. and that's good.

  273. But where it becomes

  274. an idol,

  275. where we become deceived,

  276. is where we want to

  277. please God more than

  278. that person.

  279. Start comparing ourselves

  280. to one another.

  281. When we know

  282. we have sinned,

  283. we fear,

  284. and we want to make sure

  285. that we can hold on

  286. to our salvation.

  287. One of our children

  288. in our congregation

  289. asks that,

  290. well,

  291. what if I get baptized,

  292. but then I sin

  293. after I've been baptized?

  294. We want to make sure

  295. I'm doing all I need to

  296. to hold on to my salvation.

  297. And let's see how Paul

  298. answers those desires.

  299. He says,

  300. you saw Christ

  301. portrayed as crucified.

  302. You received the Spirit

  303. by faith,

  304. not because you were

  305. keeping the law well.

  306. that same way

  307. that God saved you,

  308. God will keep you.

  309. Reject the lie

  310. that covenant blessings

  311. depend on you.

  312. Covenant blessings

  313. depend on God.

  314. Picture a mother

  315. who's got little children,

  316. not getting enough sleep.

  317. She hears on a podcast

  318. by a pastor,

  319. quote,

  320. all future blessings

  321. of the Christian life

  322. are conditional

  323. on your keeping

  324. of the covenant.

  325. This is a strong teaching

  326. that's very popular

  327. right now.

  328. We can relate

  329. to this mother

  330. because she thinks,

  331. well,

  332. I did not keep

  333. the covenant well

  334. even just this morning.

  335. I had a rage of anger

  336. against my kids

  337. who won't obey

  338. and won't listen

  339. and keep fighting each other.

  340. We can relate to that

  341. because we all

  342. can look at our lives

  343. and we can start

  344. to feel like

  345. I'm running low

  346. on hope.

  347. If this depends on me

  348. and me obeying God

  349. to get blessings,

  350. I'm hopeless.

  351. We've all been there too.

  352. Maybe I was never saved.

  353. Has the enemy brought

  354. that little dart

  355. against you?

  356. You're such a sinner.

  357. You've been baptized

  358. and you continue

  359. to live in sin

  360. and continue to stumble.

  361. Maybe you were never saved.

  362. While we certainly hear

  363. from God's word,

  364. there is no place

  365. for a false assurance.

  366. If you're grafted

  367. into Christ,

  368. he will bear his fruit in you.

  369. This is not a licentiousness,

  370. but that's not the message

  371. to the church in Galatia.

  372. The church in Galatia

  373. was adding on

  374. to the gospel of grace

  375. works.

  376. Add on the works

  377. to make sure you stay.

  378. Paul says,

  379. see Christ again.

  380. See Christ portrayed

  381. openly.

  382. Among you

  383. as crucified.

  384. We need to be a church

  385. that sees Christ

  386. among us

  387. every time we gather.

  388. And how do we see Christ?

  389. We see him

  390. bearing all our sin,

  391. paying for it

  392. once and for all.

  393. And as we gather

  394. around the foot

  395. of the cross,

  396. 360,

  397. all of us gathered

  398. around Christ

  399. receiving grace

  400. from him,

  401. it changes

  402. how we relate

  403. to one another,

  404. doesn't it?

  405. dear believer,

  406. you are not

  407. your own.

  408. You were bought

  409. with a price.

  410. It's the very high price,

  411. the precious blood

  412. of God,

  413. the son himself.

  414. Verse 29

  415. of our sermon text,

  416. he says,

  417. church,

  418. you are Christ's.

  419. Christ's.

  420. So reject the lie

  421. that covenant blessings

  422. depend on you.

  423. Number two,

  424. how is it that the Lord

  425. ministers

  426. his blessings to you?

  427. How does the Lord

  428. minister

  429. his blessings to you?

  430. to minister

  431. is to carry out

  432. with the authority

  433. of an office

  434. all of the responsibilities

  435. and roles

  436. and privileges

  437. that that office

  438. can bestow.

  439. I see here

  440. in these verses

  441. four through nine

  442. two ways

  443. in which Paul

  444. reminds the church

  445. this is how you

  446. receive this.

  447. This is how the Lord

  448. ministers

  449. his blessings

  450. to you.

  451. It's by the spirit

  452. and it's by the word.

  453. by the spirit

  454. and the word.

  455. First,

  456. the spirit.

  457. He reminds us

  458. of times

  459. we have experienced

  460. his powerful

  461. working in us.

  462. He says,

  463. think back to a time

  464. when the spirit

  465. ministered to you.

  466. What was that like?

  467. You know what it was like

  468. if you're saved.

  469. The spirit convicted you.

  470. Look what he says

  471. in verse four.

  472. Did you suffer

  473. so many things

  474. in vain

  475. if indeed

  476. in vain?

  477. The word suffer

  478. means did you experience?

  479. Did you go through

  480. this?

  481. Were you carried

  482. along by this?

  483. By this ministry

  484. of the spirit?

  485. He says the spirit

  486. moved among you

  487. for a reason.

  488. The reason the spirit

  489. drew you to Christ

  490. in the first place

  491. was for his purpose.

  492. It's so that you

  493. would never forget

  494. God is real.

  495. God is truly

  496. applying to you

  497. personally

  498. all the blessings

  499. of Christ

  500. because this was

  501. the plan

  502. of the God

  503. the Father,

  504. Son,

  505. and the Spirit.

  506. And he reminds us

  507. in verse five

  508. that therefore

  509. the one who supplies

  510. the spirit to you

  511. and does miracles

  512. among you

  513. does he do it

  514. by the works

  515. of the law

  516. or by the hearing

  517. of faith?

  518. Did the spirit

  519. cause you to repent

  520. and see Jesus

  521. as crucified

  522. because you were

  523. a good person?

  524. Or was it because

  525. you heard the gospel

  526. and the spirit

  527. gave you a faith

  528. to believe that

  529. this could be true

  530. for you as well?

  531. Well, of course,

  532. it's not because

  533. you're a law keeper

  534. that the Lord

  535. ministered to you.

  536. It's because you're

  537. a sinner

  538. in need of him

  539. and that's why

  540. he will continue

  541. to minister

  542. to you now.

  543. The Spirit

  544. of God

  545. ministers

  546. the blessings

  547. of Christ.

  548. He applies it

  549. to you

  550. while you were

  551. sinners.

  552. That's the ministry

  553. of the Spirit

  554. and the way

  555. the Lord does this

  556. in the second place

  557. is by the ministry

  558. of the Word.

  559. He teaches us

  560. from the Bible.

  561. He calls the church

  562. to study the Lord's

  563. acts and his revelation

  564. in all of Scripture.

  565. And he takes them

  566. to one particular passage.

  567. He takes them

  568. to the story

  569. of Abraham

  570. in Genesis 15.

  571. Look at verse 6

  572. of our sermon text today.

  573. Even so,

  574. Abraham believed God

  575. and it was counted

  576. to him

  577. for righteousness.

  578. He's quoting

  579. to the church

  580. Genesis 15

    Genesis 15:6

  581. verse 6.

  582. He's saying,

  583. study the Bible.

  584. See,

  585. how is it

  586. that God

  587. has ever

  588. saved anyone?

  589. God saved you

  590. the same way

  591. he saved Abraham.

  592. God did not

  593. save Abraham

  594. because Abraham

  595. kept the law.

  596. God saved Abraham

  597. because he believed

  598. by faith

  599. that this could be true

  600. and God counted it

  601. to him

  602. as righteousness.

  603. In verse 6

  604. he says,

  605. Know therefore

  606. that those who are

  607. of faith

  608. are children

  609. of Abraham.

  610. This Gentile

  611. whose life

  612. is a mess

  613. is a child

  614. of Abraham.

  615. First class citizen

  616. in the kingdom

  617. of God.

  618. And dear believer,

  619. you are

  620. the fulfillment

  621. of God's promise

  622. long ago.

  623. Look at verse 8.

  624. The scripture

  625. foreseeing that God

  626. would justify

  627. the Gentiles

  628. by faith

  629. preached the good news

  630. beforehand

  631. to Abraham

  632. saying,

  633. In you

  634. all the nations

  635. will be blessed.

  636. God promised

  637. this three times

  638. to Abraham.

  639. Genesis 12,

  640. 18,

  641. and 22.

  642. Verse 9,

  643. So then those

  644. who are of faith

  645. are blessed

  646. with faithful Abraham.

  647. Do you follow

  648. Paul's logic?

  649. This is how

  650. someone like you

  651. and me

  652. can receive

  653. God's covenant

  654. blessings.

  655. The Lord

  656. designed

  657. your salvation.

  658. The Lord

  659. accomplished

  660. your salvation.

  661. And the Lord

  662. has applied

  663. your salvation.

  664. what he began

  665. in you,

  666. he will finish.

  667. What he initiated

  668. by the ministry

  669. of the Spirit

  670. through the Word

  671. of God,

  672. he will finish.

  673. He will bring it

  674. to its fulfillment

  675. in your life.

  676. You were

  677. Christ's.

  678. You are

  679. Christ's

  680. as the Spirit

  681. has united you

  682. to him now

  683. through faith.

  684. And you shall

  685. always

  686. be

  687. Christ's.

  688. Let the Lord

  689. minister this truth

  690. to you again

  691. today.

  692. Through his

  693. word,

  694. you're seeing

  695. these words

  696. for yourself

  697. and by the

  698. power of his

  699. Spirit.

  700. Number three,

  701. Paul clarifies

  702. that covenant

  703. blessings do

  704. require obedience.

  705. Covenant

  706. blessings do

  707. require obedience.

  708. But he says

  709. it's not

  710. your obedience

  711. that secures

  712. them.

  713. look at what

  714. he says

  715. in verse 10.

  716. He says,

  717. as many

  718. as are

  719. of the

  720. works of

  721. the law

  722. are under

  723. a curse

  724. for it

  725. is written

  726. cursed

  727. is everyone

  728. who doesn't

  729. continue

  730. in all

  731. the things

  732. that are

  733. written

  734. in the

  735. book of

  736. the law

  737. and do

  738. them.

  739. He's

  740. quoting

  741. Deuteronomy

  742. 27,

  743. 26.

  744. He says,

  745. yes,

  746. to get

  747. blessing,

  748. you must

  749. have

  750. obedience.

  751. And what's

  752. more,

  753. that if you

  754. break the

  755. covenant,

  756. you get

  757. cursed.

  758. We know

  759. that the

  760. moral law

  761. of God

  762. is perfect

  763. and the

  764. keeping of

  765. God's

  766. moral law

  767. is required

  768. for anyone

  769. to be

  770. saved.

  771. But look

  772. at what he

  773. says in

  774. verse 11.

  775. No man

  776. is justified

  777. by the

  778. law before

  779. God.

  780. And it's

  781. evident because

  782. the Bible

  783. says in

  784. Habakkuk 2,

  785. 4,

  786. the righteous

  787. will live

  788. by faith.

  789. Paul's

  790. preaching that

  791. the only way

  792. that sinners

  793. like you and

  794. me can be

  795. declared

  796. righteous

  797. by the

  798. holy God

  799. is if

  800. the Lord

  801. Jesus,

  802. God the

  803. Son,

  804. took on

  805. a flesh

  806. and he

  807. made himself

  808. under his

  809. own law.

  810. And he

  811. did that to

  812. become the

  813. substance of

  814. his own

  815. ceremonial

  816. sacrificial

  817. system.

  818. He obeyed

  819. the Father

  820. perfectly and

  821. received all

  822. the blessings

  823. of the

  824. promise.

  825. All the

  826. blessings that

  827. God has ever

  828. promised find

  829. their yes

  830. and amen.

  831. Ultimately,

  832. in Christ.

  833. In verse

  834. 12, we

  835. read that

  836. the law

  837. is not

  838. of faith,

  839. but the

  840. man who

  841. does them

  842. will live

  843. by them.

  844. So do

  845. covenant

  846. blessings require

  847. obedience?

  848. Yes, they

  849. do.

  850. And only one

  851. who obeys

  852. them perfectly,

  853. personally,

  854. and perpetually

  855. can live

  856. by them.

  857. There's no

  858. hope for

  859. anyone under

  860. Adam's curse,

  861. but that's

  862. why the

  863. Lord Jesus

  864. Christ.

  865. He became

  866. the righteousness

  867. we could

  868. never achieve

  869. on our

  870. own.

  871. We read

  872. in verse

  873. 13,

  874. Christ

  875. redeemed

  876. us from

  877. the curse

  878. of the law,

  879. having become

  880. a curse

  881. for us.

  882. It is

  883. written,

  884. cursed is

  885. everyone who

  886. hangs on

  887. a tree.

  888. Someone like

  889. you and me

  890. could never

  891. have a hope

  892. of receiving

  893. covenant

  894. blessing.

  895. And we

  896. have two

  897. problems.

  898. We are

  899. not righteous

  900. and our

  901. sin needs

  902. to be

  903. punished.

  904. Jesus

  905. Christ

  906. fulfilled

  907. both.

  908. He kept

  909. the law

  910. perfectly

  911. to give

  912. you freely

  913. the righteousness

  914. you could

  915. never have.

  916. And he

  917. took the

  918. penalty so

  919. that you

  920. don't need

  921. to die

  922. for your

  923. sins.

  924. He kept

  925. the law

  926. and he

  927. set you

  928. free.

  929. He was

  930. cursed so

  931. that you

  932. could be

  933. blessed.

  934. God's

  935. covenant

  936. blessings

  937. require

  938. obedience.

  939. The good

  940. news is

  941. it's not

  942. your

  943. obedience

  944. or mine.

  945. Jesus

  946. Christ

  947. fulfilled

  948. all of

  949. the

  950. requirements

  951. so that

  952. he could

  953. receive

  954. the blessing

  955. and turn

  956. around

  957. and apply

  958. those to

  959. his people

  960. freely.

  961. Number

  962. four,

  963. how did

  964. the Lord

  965. secure

  966. the blessings

  967. he promised

  968. to Abraham?

  969. how did

  970. the Lord

  971. secure

  972. these

  973. blessings

  974. that he

  975. promised?

  976. Look at

  977. verse 14

  978. with me.

  979. The blessing

  980. of Abraham,

  981. the Lord

  982. purposed

  983. to give

  984. it freely

  985. to the

  986. Gentiles

  987. as well,

  988. those that

  989. are not

  990. from the

  991. physical

  992. line of

  993. Abraham,

  994. and he

  995. secured

  996. it through

  997. Jesus

  998. Christ.

  999. How can

  1000. Gentiles

  1001. claim all

  1002. of those

  1003. same blessings

  1004. and promises

  1005. as their

  1006. own now?

  1007. In

  1008. Genesis

  1009. 15,

  1010. the Lord

  1011. said,

  1012. I am

  1013. your shield.

  1014. I am

  1015. your great

  1016. reward.

  1017. It's because

  1018. the Lord

  1019. accomplished

  1020. that which

  1021. he promised,

  1022. and he

  1023. applied it

  1024. to those

  1025. who would

  1026. receive his

  1027. promise

  1028. by faith,

  1029. trusting that

  1030. what he

  1031. says can

  1032. be true

  1033. for you.

  1034. In

  1035. verse 14,

  1036. he says,

  1037. it's that

  1038. we might

  1039. receive the

  1040. promise of

  1041. the Holy

  1042. Spirit.

  1043. How do

  1044. you receive

  1045. it?

  1046. Through

  1047. faith.

  1048. What is

  1049. faith?

  1050. So that

  1051. these promises

  1052. and blessings

  1053. can be

  1054. yours.

  1055. Faith is

  1056. an open

  1057. hand like

  1058. a beggar

  1059. receiving

  1060. what God

  1061. is going

  1062. to freely

  1063. give.

  1064. You have

  1065. a saving

  1066. faith when

  1067. you see

  1068. your need

  1069. for a

  1070. Savior,

  1071. and his

  1072. spirit cuts

  1073. you to

  1074. the heart,

  1075. and he

  1076. turns you

  1077. from the

  1078. sin,

  1079. and he

  1080. turns you

  1081. to the

  1082. Savior,

  1083. not because

  1084. of the

  1085. good works

  1086. you do,

  1087. but because

  1088. you need

  1089. him to

  1090. give you

  1091. this salvation

  1092. freely.

  1093. in verse

  1094. 15,

  1095. Paul says,

  1096. brothers,

  1097. when a

  1098. covenant

  1099. has been

  1100. cut or

  1101. confirmed,

  1102. no one

  1103. makes it

  1104. void or

  1105. adds to

  1106. it.

  1107. How is

  1108. this promise

  1109. for you,

  1110. and how

  1111. is it

  1112. secured?

  1113. It's because

  1114. God

  1115. covenanted

  1116. this promise.

  1117. No one

  1118. can add

  1119. to what

  1120. God already

  1121. sealed in

  1122. this covenant,

  1123. and no one

  1124. can take

  1125. away from

  1126. it.

  1127. verse 16,

  1128. he says,

  1129. now the

  1130. promises were

  1131. spoken to

  1132. Abraham and

  1133. his offspring.

  1134. He doesn't

  1135. say to

  1136. descendants as

  1137. of many,

  1138. but as

  1139. of one to

  1140. your

  1141. offspring,

  1142. which is

  1143. Christ.

  1144. All that

  1145. God stored

  1146. up in the

  1147. treasury of

  1148. heaven,

  1149. in the

  1150. course of

  1151. human history,

  1152. God would

  1153. intervene in

  1154. time,

  1155. and in

  1156. space.

  1157. And through

  1158. the physical

  1159. seed of

  1160. one man,

  1161. Abraham,

  1162. would come

  1163. the promised

  1164. savior,

  1165. that same

  1166. seed that

  1167. the Lord

  1168. promised back

  1169. to Eve in

  1170. the garden

  1171. after the

  1172. sin of Adam

  1173. and Eve and

  1174. the curse on

  1175. the serpent,

  1176. the Lord

  1177. promised this

  1178. one seed

  1179. will come

  1180. to save

  1181. and deliver.

  1182. Now this

  1183. promise gets

  1184. more narrow,

  1185. more specific.

  1186. It will come

  1187. from the

  1188. bloodline

  1189. of Abraham.

  1190. Let me

  1191. define some

  1192. of the terms

  1193. here to make

  1194. sure our

  1195. kids are

  1196. understanding

  1197. the argument

  1198. that Paul

  1199. is opening

  1200. up.

  1201. He's talking

  1202. about an

  1203. inheritance,

  1204. and he's

  1205. saying who

  1206. this inheritance

  1207. is for.

  1208. So to give

  1209. a simple

  1210. example,

  1211. the grandpa,

  1212. as we saw

  1213. in Sunday

  1214. school,

  1215. let's say

  1216. grandpa owns

  1217. this amazing

  1218. ranch,

  1219. this great

  1220. farm.

  1221. That's the

  1222. inheritance.

  1223. The inheritance

  1224. is what he's

  1225. going to pass

  1226. on to the

  1227. next generation.

  1228. And this

  1229. grandpa puts

  1230. on a piece

  1231. of paper the

  1232. names that

  1233. are going to

  1234. get this.

  1235. those names

  1236. on this

  1237. piece of

  1238. paper,

  1239. the last

  1240. will and

  1241. testament,

  1242. those are

  1243. the heirs

  1244. of this

  1245. grandpa.

  1246. Galatians 3

  1247. is a glorious

  1248. passage because

  1249. it says this

  1250. has been

  1251. established.

  1252. Who will get

  1253. all of the

  1254. inheritance,

  1255. all of the

  1256. blessings?

  1257. It's whose

  1258. names are

  1259. written in

  1260. this will.

  1261. These are

  1262. the heirs.

  1263. In this

  1264. passage,

  1265. Galatians 3

  1266. 16,

  1267. the promises

  1268. were spoken

  1269. to Abraham

  1270. and his

  1271. offspring,

  1272. which is

  1273. Christ.

  1274. Christ is

  1275. the one

  1276. who will

  1277. inherit and

  1278. ultimately

  1279. fulfill these

  1280. promises.

  1281. He will be

  1282. the heir of

  1283. all that God

  1284. has stored up

  1285. to one seed

  1286. from Abraham.

  1287. See, what

  1288. happens in the

  1289. church is that

  1290. we have other

  1291. people wanting

  1292. to change the

  1293. terms.

  1294. So we have

  1295. a group wanting

  1296. to say this

  1297. person's name is

  1298. not on the

  1299. list, but we

  1300. want to go ahead

  1301. and give them

  1302. the blessings of

  1303. the inheritance.

  1304. And then

  1305. they're saying

  1306. this person,

  1307. their name is

  1308. on there, but

  1309. we don't want

  1310. them to be part

  1311. of it for

  1312. these reasons.

  1313. Well, if a

  1314. grandpa dies,

  1315. there's an

  1316. executor of the

  1317. will, there's a

  1318. lawyer who knows

  1319. the law, and

  1320. he's going to

  1321. point to this

  1322. and say, this

  1323. is binding.

  1324. No one can

  1325. add or take

  1326. away from

  1327. this.

  1328. This is what

  1329. secures it

  1330. right here.

  1331. And this is a

  1332. covenant.

  1333. The covenant

  1334. says all the

  1335. blessings are in

  1336. Christ.

  1337. Whoever is in

  1338. Christ is the

  1339. one who's going

  1340. to receive it.

  1341. No one can add

  1342. or take away

  1343. from that.

  1344. So as a

  1345. church, we have

  1346. to look to

  1347. Christ.

  1348. We have to

  1349. look to who

  1350. it is that all

  1351. of these blessings

  1352. are sealed up

  1353. in.

  1354. And we don't

  1355. have any

  1356. authority to

  1357. add or take

  1358. away from it

  1359. because Christ

  1360. has secured

  1361. all of these

  1362. blessings for

  1363. all those who

  1364. belong to him

  1365. through faith.

  1366. faith.

  1367. The Lord secured

  1368. for you all

  1369. the spiritual

  1370. blessings that

  1371. he promised to

  1372. Abraham in

  1373. this covenant

  1374. with Jesus

  1375. Christ as the

  1376. heir.

  1377. Number five,

  1378. why did the

  1379. Lord then still

  1380. give his law

  1381. to Israel?

  1382. Paul's working

  1383. through this

  1384. argument and

  1385. that's the

  1386. natural rebuttal.

  1387. Well, what

  1388. about all of

  1389. the civil laws?

  1390. What about all

  1391. the ceremonial

  1392. laws that were

  1393. piled on for

  1394. Israel?

  1395. What do we do

  1396. with those?

  1397. Verse 17, he

  1398. says the

  1399. requirements of

  1400. the law cannot

  1401. annul God's

  1402. promises and

  1403. make the promise

  1404. of no effect.

  1405. If the

  1406. inheritance is

  1407. of the law,

  1408. then it is of

  1409. no more of

  1410. promise.

  1411. But God has

  1412. granted it to

  1413. Abraham by

  1414. promise.

  1415. He's saying

  1416. that the

  1417. ceremonial laws

  1418. given to

  1419. Israel under

  1420. Moses do not

  1421. change the

  1422. promise of

  1423. free grace

  1424. that he gave

  1425. to Abraham.

  1426. Well, then the

  1427. natural question

  1428. is,

  1429. what do we

  1430. make of

  1431. those?

  1432. What do we

  1433. do with

  1434. those?

  1435. In verse 19

  1436. and 21, he

  1437. asked those

  1438. questions.

  1439. Then why is

  1440. there the

  1441. law?

  1442. Verse 21, is

  1443. the law then

  1444. against the

  1445. promises of

  1446. God?

  1447. And he says

  1448. certainly not.

  1449. He gives two

  1450. answers.

  1451. Number one,

  1452. it's because we

  1453. must be convicted

  1454. of our sin

  1455. before we will

  1456. ever repent.

  1457. The law is

  1458. very important to

  1459. convict us of

  1460. our sin.

  1461. in verse 21,

  1462. he said,

  1463. for if there

  1464. had been a

  1465. law given

  1466. which could

  1467. make a life,

  1468. most certainly

  1469. righteousness would

  1470. not have been

  1471. of the law.

  1472. Verse 22,

  1473. but the

  1474. scripture imprisoned

  1475. all things under

  1476. sin, that the

  1477. promise by faith

  1478. in Jesus Christ

  1479. might be given

  1480. to those who

  1481. believe.

  1482. The law was

  1483. added because

  1484. of transgressions.

  1485. So why do we

  1486. have the law?

  1487. Why was the law

  1488. given to Israel?

  1489. It's because

  1490. everyone who

  1491. will turn to

  1492. God to receive

  1493. grace by faith

  1494. must first be

  1495. convicted of

  1496. our sin.

  1497. We must repent.

  1498. We must see

  1499. that we fall so

  1500. short of the

  1501. glory of God.

  1502. And so the law

  1503. cuts us down.

  1504. It humbles us.

  1505. And it exposes

  1506. us.

  1507. I cannot save

  1508. myself.

  1509. The second

  1510. reason he gives

  1511. is because we

  1512. must see our

  1513. great need of

  1514. God's grace

  1515. before we will

  1516. turn to God

  1517. with hoping

  1518. faith in that

  1519. offspring that

  1520. will come.

  1521. The Lord will

  1522. send a Messiah,

  1523. an anointed one.

  1524. The Lord will

  1525. send one who

  1526. will fulfill the

  1527. law.

  1528. The Lord will

  1529. send a victor

  1530. who will conquer

  1531. all the enemies.

  1532. And he will

  1533. come at the

  1534. fullness of

  1535. time.

  1536. We read in

  1537. verse 19.

  1538. There is one

  1539. to whom the

  1540. promise has

  1541. been made.

  1542. And that's the

  1543. Lord Jesus

  1544. Christ.

  1545. The Lord Jesus

  1546. Christ will

  1547. come.

  1548. And you must

  1549. see your need

  1550. for him.

  1551. When the

  1552. Lord Jesus

  1553. was brought

  1554. to the temple

  1555. as a baby,

  1556. there were

  1557. two believers

  1558. who had the

  1559. Old Testament

  1560. scriptures and

  1561. the Lord had

  1562. prepared them in

  1563. their spirit to

  1564. receive him.

  1565. And when they

  1566. did, the spirit

  1567. ministered to him.

  1568. This is the

  1569. anointed one,

  1570. that promised

  1571. seed of long

  1572. ago.

  1573. If we're reading

  1574. the Old Testament

  1575. correctly, we are

  1576. reading with an

  1577. anticipation.

  1578. There is more.

  1579. There is a grand

  1580. act.

  1581. There will be the

  1582. coming Messiah.

  1583. The blessing that

  1584. God had promised

  1585. to Abraham was

  1586. salvation.

  1587. You will be

  1588. God's people.

  1589. You will dwell in

  1590. his kingdom.

  1591. You will be secure

  1592. in him forever.

  1593. He will be your

  1594. shield.

  1595. And the Lord

  1596. kept all of his

  1597. promises.

  1598. The Lord kept

  1599. the promises to

  1600. Abraham in a

  1601. physical and an

  1602. earthly sense.

  1603. And he also

  1604. fulfilled them and

  1605. expanded them into a

  1606. spiritual fulfillment.

  1607. The physical seed of

  1608. Abraham did get this

  1609. land that God

  1610. promised after they

  1611. came out of slavery

  1612. in Joshua 21.

  1613. All of the good

  1614. things the Lord

  1615. promised to Abraham,

  1616. Isaac, and Jacob,

  1617. they all came to

  1618. pass.

  1619. And in 1 Kings

    1 Kings 4:1

  1620. chapter 4 verse 1,

  1621. we read that with

  1622. Solomon again after

  1623. David the man of

  1624. war had defeated the

  1625. enemies with the

  1626. sword, then came

  1627. Solomon with the

  1628. kingdom of peace.

  1629. And the Lord gave

  1630. them all the land.

  1631. All of the good

  1632. things God promised,

  1633. he gave.

  1634. And the Lord also

  1635. exposed the need of

  1636. God's people to have

  1637. Yahweh as their

  1638. king.

  1639. After Joshua and the

  1640. Israelites lived in

  1641. the land, there were

  1642. so many problems.

  1643. It was porous.

  1644. They never defeated

  1645. the idols.

  1646. They allowed idolaters

  1647. to live in their

  1648. midst.

1649. They had no king and

  1650. everyone did whatever

  1651. pleased them.

1652. The book of Judges is

  1653. an ugly book to

  1654. expose their need of

  1655. a king.

  1656. They need God

  1657. himself, Yahweh, to

  1658. rule as their king.

  1659. The disobedience of

  1660. the Israelites in the

  1661. land led them to

  1662. exile.

1663. It led them to see a

  1664. greater fulfillment

  1665. must come, one that

1666. we can't produce by our

  1667. own good works.

  1668. And that's why Paul

1669. says the law for them

  1670. was a tutor.

  1671. It was a trainer.

1672. It was a servant of

  1673. the great king that

  1674. they need.

  1675. The law serves the

  1676. same purpose for the

  1677. church today.

  1678. It humbles us.

1679. It tells us we need a

1680. king to rule over your

  1681. heart and your life.

1682. Look at what a wreck

  1683. your life is without

  1684. Christ ruling over you

  1685. as a king.

  1686. repent again.

  1687. Humble yourself.

1688. Turn to God to be

  1689. your king and your

  1690. savior once again.

  1691. Praise him for his

  1692. law.

  1693. What pleases the Lord

1694. in his moral law does

  1695. not change.

1696. We look back on the

  1697. ceremonial laws and we

  1698. see these all foreshadow

1699. the work of Christ on

  1700. the cross.

  1701. Christ.

1702. We look at his civil

1703. law and we long for a

  1704. kingdom of true peace

1705. and one day Christ will

  1706. rule over the new

  1707. heavens and the new

  1708. earth perfectly.

1709. We long for him to

1710. rule and to be under

  1711. that rule.

1712. And now we are in a

  1713. spiritual sense.

  1714. We are his people.

1715. We are united to him.

  1716. He rules over his

  1717. church.

1718. I'm going to try to be a

  1719. little bit more specific

1720. as we wrap this up with

  1721. the sixth observation.

  1722. There are specific

  1723. promises that God gave

  1724. through Abraham and his

  1725. offspring Christ.

1726. So I want to do my best to

1727. show you what I see in the

  1728. scripture.

1729. You can study further on

  1730. your own as well.

1731. And then come to Sunday

1732. school next week as we pick

1733. up where we left off on this

  1734. topic.

  1735. Here's the question.

  1736. What specific blessings can

1737. someone like you and me

  1738. expect?

  1739. What are the specific

  1740. blessings from the

  1741. Abrahamic covenant that

1742. someone like you and me

  1743. Gentiles used to be

  1744. sinners.

1745. We had no concept of God

1746. and his word until he

  1747. ministered to us.

  1748. What can we expect?

  1749. Four things for us.

  1750. The Lord had promised

  1751. Abraham a child.

  1752. Do you remember that?

1753. Him and his wife were

1754. barren and the Lord said

1755. you will have a child.

  1756. Well on earth Abraham

  1757. got Isaac.

  1758. Because God keeps his

  1759. covenant he also fulfilled

  1760. and expanded this with

  1761. Jesus Christ.

1762. And he gave him an

  1763. offspring Jesus born from

  1764. the line of Abraham.

  1765. He's on every genealogy

  1766. as Abraham through this

  1767. line came Jesus Christ.

1768. So yes he got the son on

1769. earth and God fulfilled and

  1770. expanded it further by

  1771. giving him the offspring

  1772. Jesus Christ in heaven.

1773. Now look at what he says

1774. in verse 26 for the

  1775. church.

1776. You are all children of

  1777. God through faith in

  1778. Jesus Christ.

  1779. The expansion of this

1780. blessing pulls you in to

1781. the family of God and the

  1782. blessings he promised

  1783. Abraham as well.

  1784. The child.

  1785. Number two.

  1786. The Lord counted Abraham's

  1787. faith as righteousness.

1788. And because God keeps his

  1789. covenant Jesus Christ

  1790. fulfills and expands this

1791. blessing to you as well.

  1792. In verse 27.

1793. As many of you as were

  1794. baptized into Christ you

  1795. have put on Christ.

  1796. You have been baptizing

1797. Christ in two ways according

  1798. to scripture.

1799. First you have been baptized

  1800. by blood.

  1801. Mark 10 39.

  1802. Jesus says you are

1803. baptized in the blood as

1804. you drink from this cup of

  1805. his covenant.

1806. See the baptism of blood it

1807. means that you have been

1808. washed by the work of

  1809. Christ on Calvary.

1810. You have seen Jesus Christ

  1811. portrayed through the

  1812. preaching of the word.

1813. You have seen that it was

1814. your sin that kept him

  1815. there.

1816. It was your voice as one of

  1817. the mockers.

1818. And the Lord Jesus in grace

1819. is paying for that very sin

  1820. for you.

1821. That's to be baptized by the

  1822. blood.

  1823. Baptism of the spirit.

1824. John the Baptist he said I

1825. baptize you with water but

1826. there is one coming it's

1827. Jesus Christ in Luke 16.

1828. He will baptize you with the

  1829. Holy Spirit.

1830. That means that Jesus Christ

1831. will give the spirit of God

  1832. to you.

1833. You who were dead in your

1834. trespasses he will make you

  1835. alive.

  1836. That's called regeneration.

1837. And as he brings you alive

1838. the spirit indwells you and

1839. sanctifies you and lives in

1840. you and creates in your life a

1841. place where the Holy God

1842. Father Son and Spirit can live

  1843. and abide forever.

1844. That's what it means to be

  1845. baptized by blood and

1846. baptized by the Holy Spirit.

1847. As many of you as were

1848. baptized into Christ he says

1849. you have put on Christ in

  1850. verse 27.

1851. To put on Christ it means that

  1852. you have received Christ's

  1853. righteousness as your own.

1854. To be baptized in Christ it

1855. means that you are submerged.

1856. As Jonathan pointed out to our

  1857. kids last week it's it's like a

  1858. pickle a cucumber is a cucumber

1859. but it's baptized into the the

1860. brine and the vinegar and it

  1861. becomes a pickle.

  1862. That's sanctification.

1863. You are baptized in Christ.

1864. You have put on Christ.

1865. You are washed by his blood and

1866. you are identified with him.

1867. He changes your very substance.

1868. The third blessing is that the

1869. Lord promised Abraham a great

1870. people from all over the earth

1871. like the dust that would be

1872. united to God in the heavens like

  1873. shining stars.

1874. Do you remember that last week?

1875. Your offspring will be like the

  1876. dust.

1877. They will be like the stars.

1878. It doesn't mean like the Lion

1879. King where you die and become a

  1880. literal star.

1881. It means that the glory of God

1882. the spiritual purity and glory of

1883. God is in you and your life

  1884. reflects him.

  1885. That's what that means.

1886. Well on earth Abraham got the

1887. Jewish nation and he got this

1888. ethnic people a true people

1889. living in a true land and

1890. because God keeps his covenant

1891. Jesus Christ further fulfills and

  1892. expands this promise.

1893. Look at what he says in verse 28.

1894. Now there is neither Jew nor Greek.

1895. There is neither slave nor free

  1896. man.

1897. There is neither male nor female.

1898. He's saying there is not a first

1899. class and a second class Christian.

1900. There is only first class citizens in

  1901. the kingdom of God.

1902. There is no difference between any of

1903. you and it's because you are united

  1904. to Christ.

  1905. Not by your works.

1906. Not by your outward appearance.

  1907. By faith.

1908. That's what you all have in common.

1909. You are all one in Christ Jesus.

1910. So we don't go to church for

  1911. community.

1912. We don't go to church for

  1913. fellowship.

1914. We don't chase after the byproducts.

1915. We are church because we are one

  1916. in Christ.

1917. We are one through the same faith,

1918. the same spirit that ministers and

  1919. unites us.

1920. Well guess what you get as a result?

1921. Your lives do become more like

  1922. Christ.

1923. You do get the deepest conversations.

1924. You do get friends and true

1925. fellowship for life and it's more

  1926. than a friendship.

  1927. It's a fellowship that is even

1928. tighter and closer and more

1929. more intimate and meaningful than a

  1930. blood relation.

1931. Have you ever experienced that in

  1932. the church?

  1933. That's what we get.

1934. Why would we settle for anything

  1935. less?

1936. Well the fourth promise is that the

1937. Lord promised Abraham a land.

1938. On earth he got the promised land.

  1939. He got geographic Israel.

1940. And because the Lord keeps his

1941. covenant Jesus Christ also further

1942. fulfills and expands on this.

1943. Listen to the language from the

1944. Bible itself teaching us this.

  1945. Hebrews 12 21.

  1946. Writing to the church.

1947. Writing to you who have a faith and

  1948. are united to Christ.

1949. You have come to Mount Zion.

1950. Mount Zion is the hill in

1951. Jerusalem where the temple is.

1952. And he's saying all of you across the

  1953. world.

  1954. All of the nations.

1955. You have come to Mount Zion.

  1956. Mount Zion.

1957. To the city of the living God.

  1958. The heavenly Jerusalem.

  1959. He's saying don't pattern yourself off

  1960. of old Jerusalem.

1961. You're part of the heavenly Jerusalem.

1962. You have come to the assembly of the

  1963. firstborn.

1964. Well in the ancient world it's only the

1965. firstborn that gets all the

  1966. inheritance.

1967. The firstborn gets grandpa's farm.

1968. And he's saying you are the assembly.

  1969. The gathering.

1970. The church of the firstborn.

1971. Every single one of you is a

  1972. firstborn.

1973. You are enrolled in heaven.

1974. This is language of citizenship.

1975. You are on the roster.

  1976. You belong here.

  1977. You can vote.

  1978. You can have land.

  1979. You possess this kingdom.

  1980. It's yours.

1981. You have come to God.

  1982. The judge of all.

1983. To the spirit of just men.

  1984. Made perfect.

  1985. To Jesus.

  1986. The mediator.

  1987. Of this new covenant.

1988. That's what it means to be a

  1989. Christian.

1990. God keeps all of his promises.

  1991. He further fulfills them.

  1992. And he expands them.

  1993. And elevates them.

1994. To the highest of heavens.

  1995. Look at verse 29.

  1996. If you are Christ's.

1997. Then you are Abraham's offspring.

  1998. And heirs.

  1999. According to promise.

  2000. Did Paul persuade you?

2001. Do you see why someone like you.

  2002. And someone like me.

  2003. Can be an heir.

2004. You can receive all of these.

  2005. Covenant blessings.

2006. By the work of Christ.

2007. I found myself this week.

  2008. Thinking a lot about.

  2009. John Bunyan's example.

2010. And John Bunyan was a simple pastor.

2011. He wrote Pilgrim's Progress from prison.

2012. In the 1600s in England.

2013. When John Bunyan would see.

  2014. A drunk bum.

  2015. On the street.

2016. Or the scum of the earth.

  2017. You know.

  2018. Getting into a fight.

  2019. In the trash.

  2020. He had this line.

2021. That he would preach to himself.

  2022. To remind himself.

  2023. Of this truth.

  2024. That I think is.

2025. The heart of Galatians 3.

  2026. John Bunyan would say.

  2027. There.

  2028. Pointing to those people.

  2029. There.

2030. But for the grace of God.

  2031. Go I.

  2032. I.

2033. So like those two ladies.

  2034. On the airplane.

  2035. Instead of trying to.

  2036. Fix.

  2037. The other one.

  2038. I should say.

  2039. There.

2040. But for the grace of God.

  2041. Go I.

  2042. In fact.

2043. I would be worse than that.

2044. If God would have left me to myself.

  2045. What a beautiful thing.

2046. To belong to a body.

  2047. A church.

  2048. Where everyone knows.

  2049. That would be me.

2050. Except for the grace of God.

2051. Then we can enjoy true fellowship.

  2052. Truly one body.

  2053. One people.

  2054. By the Lord's covenant.

  2055. Mercies to us.

2056. All glory be to God.

  2057. Let's spend some time.

  2058. In response.

  2059. Reflecting on the gospel.

  2060. That you've heard.

  2061. Thank you.
