  1. Today will be our last sermon in this series called Covenant Theology for this semester.

  2. We'll take a break going into the Psalms this summer, and then in the fall we'll have probably four more sermons on Covenant Theology to wrap up that series before we go through another book of the Bible.

  3. Last week we looked in Exodus at how the Lord gave the law to the people at Mount Sinai.

  4. And today we're going to see now what is the role of the law in the life of a Christian and the covenant through Jesus Christ that's gracious.

  5. What role does the law have? That's why I'm calling it Mosaic Covenant Part Two.

  6. Let me give you a bit of context because I won't read the whole chapter this morning.

  7. But in Galatians Chapter Two, Paul is writing to a church in this region of Galatia.

  8. And he tells them there is a practice that has been happening that is unrighteous.

  9. There's something very wrong going on.

  10. You're going to pick up on what this was.

  11. He mentioned Cephas, and that's Peter.

  12. When we finish the series in John, remember, it's Peter who received grace from Jesus.

  13. Peter knows grace.

  14. It's Peter also who preached grace.

  15. And remember, when Peter preached in Acts 2, those who heard him were cut to the heart.

  16. Austin reminded our group in baptism, that's language of circumcision of the heart, as we read in Jeremiah 31.

  17. So let's pick up in our reading.

  18. I'm going to start reading at verse 11.

  19. But our sermon text, because you've got to handle what you read in the sermon.

  20. Our sermon text doesn't start until verse 14.

  21. But I'm going to start reading at verse 11.

  22. Give us an on-ramp.

  23. Galatians 2, verse 11.

    Galatians 2:11

  24. Paul is writing to the church in this region of Galatia.

  25. But when Cephas, that's Peter, came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.

  26. For he regularly ate with the Gentiles before certain men came from James.

  27. However, when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, because he feared those from the circumcision party.

  28. Then the rest of the Jews joined his hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.

  29. Now, verse 14.

  30. When I saw that they were deviating from the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas in front of everyone,

  31. If you who are a Jew live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel Gentiles to live like Jews?

  32. We are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners.

  33. And yet, because we know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ,

  34. even we ourselves have believed in Christ Jesus.

  35. This was so that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law.

  36. Because by the works of the law, no human being will be justified.

  37. But if we ourselves are also found to be sinners while seeking to be justified by Christ,

  38. is Christ then a promoter of sin?

  39. Absolutely not.

  40. If I rebuild those things that I tore down, I show myself to be a lawbreaker.

  41. For through the law, I died to the law so that I might live to God.

  42. Now, here's the part we should all memorize.

  43. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

  44. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.

  45. I do not set aside the grace of God.

  46. For if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.

  47. This is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  48. Thanks be to God.

  49. I know I didn't say it like we normally do.

  50. All right, you may be seated.

  51. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  52. Let's pray.

  53. Lord, thank you for your word.

  54. Thank you for how your word comes down like rain and it washes over us.

  55. And by the power of your spirit, it accomplishes what you intend.

  56. It always prospers for your purpose, by your power.

  57. We pray that your Holy Spirit will minister your word to us by your power again today, Lord.

  58. Pray that anything that is not of you will just fall to the ground like dust and blow away.

  59. But I ask for your help, that every word that comes from my mouth will be pleasing in your sight.

  60. And I pray for your Holy Spirit to help the believers to discern well, that you will illuminate your word to all of us.

  61. And so build us up together into the body of Jesus.

  62. Thank you for each precious soul here, Lord.

  63. You know what each one needs.

  64. We trust that you will minister according to your will.

  65. Amen.

  66. Amen.

  67. Beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  68. I want to warn you today, like Paul was warning the churches in Galatia,

  69. of two invisible webs from hell.

  70. Two invisible webs from hell.

  71. Let me illustrate it this way.

  72. Picture a dragonfly, the noblest of all the insects,

  73. trying to make its way out of a barn.

  74. One, it sees one web and swerves only to get caught in another.

  75. You and I are like that dragonfly.

  76. There are two sticky, invisible webs.

  77. And they both appeal to our flesh and our pride.

  78. Both are a constant threat as long as we're living in the flesh in this world.

  79. We can call one of those webs legalism,

  80. the other web lawlessness.

  81. I'll show you my hand up front.

  82. It's everything I'm going to do my best to summarize from these verses.

  83. I'm trying to align myself with,

  84. well, the most helpful summary to me is Sinclair Ferguson called The Whole Christ,

  85. handling the law and gospel, the marrow controversy,

  86. and our tincture of being united to Christ.

  87. That's what I'm going to do my best to align with.

  88. And from that book, he wrote that each is a web of attitudes of the heart.

  89. It's an emphasis, a tone, a feeling about God,

  90. a way of reading Scripture that is strongly present in a soul,

  91. in a family, in a pulpit, and in a church.

  92. That's the end of his quote.

  93. And you and I, we get trapped by Satan into rejecting God's grace.

  94. This translation said,

  95. Do not set aside the grace.

  96. Think about that.

  97. There's nothing that Satan wants to do more

  98. than to keep you and me from God's grace.

  99. That's his mission.

  100. And that's why these webs are from hell.

  101. So don't reject God's grace.

  102. Beware of these two invisible webs from hell.

  103. The first sticky web, it's invisible, but it teaches this.

  104. Works complete salvation.

  105. Works complete salvation.

  106. Look at verse 14.

  107. Paul says,

  108. This is an invisible sticky web.

  109. You know why?

  110. Peter got caught in this.

  111. This means that their church, when they would gather,

  112. they would share a meal.

  113. Strong biblical encouragement for the body to break bread together

  114. and share that meal.

  115. But did you catch what was happening in verses 11 through 13?

  116. Peter used to eat with those who were uncircumcised.

  117. He would sit at the table.

  118. We are one big family.

  119. And now there is a separate table.

  120. Well, that's how the synagogue and the temple were arranged.

  121. There were spheres of holiness.

  122. The closer you get to the holy of holies,

  123. the closer you are to God.

  124. But if you're a woman or a Gentile,

  125. you get pushed further and further out.

  126. So do you see the mistake that the early church had been making?

  127. Even Peter, an apostle, who knew grace,

  128. he had made the mistake of patterning the church after old Jerusalem.

  129. They were patterning their fellowship,

  130. their community,

  131. the way that they break bread after the synagogue and the temple.

  132. They're failing to see how Christ has fulfilled those heavenly shadows and types.

  133. The real pattern is what Christ brings.

  134. There's a newness to the new covenant.

  135. Amen.

  136. We are all susceptible to this.

  137. If Peter could, I can.

  138. I do.

  139. And you need to call me out like Paul called Peter out when we do this.

  140. In verse 14, we see that Paul had to confront Peter publicly.

  141. If this happened before Acts 15, I think it is,

  142. then that means by the time we arrive with the leaders from the churches

  143. that are scattered all in Jerusalem for the Jerusalem council,

  144. Peter is an ally and he agrees and he's on the side of Paul.

  145. But it took some correcting at the beginning.

  146. They were compelling other Christians,

  147. so they were compelling these Gentiles to be circumcised in the flesh.

  148. They were trying to apply a law to fellow Christians that Christ had already fulfilled.

  149. But the motivation was so that they could secure their salvation.

  150. Complete your salvation by adding on this work.

  151. How can legalism,

  152. how can that get into a Christian church like these in Galatia

  153. and like ours right here?

  154. We look back at the beginning of chapter 2,

  155. we see that it was false brothers who secretly brought this in.

  156. These were wolves in sheep's clothing.

  157. And they were coming in the recommendation of the church in Jerusalem, James.

  158. We read in verse 12,

  159. even James, you know, had sent them.

  160. They seemed very credible.

  161. But Paul warns Titus of these same false teachers,

  162. these Judaizers in Titus 1.10,

  163. many are insubordinate,

  164. empty talkers, deceivers,

  165. especially those of the circumcision party.

  166. Well, let's check ourselves right now.

  167. How can you and I tell?

  168. Yes, we know that we are saved by grace alone.

  169. Probably tired of hearing that around here.

  170. We know that.

  171. But are you still trying to do more to really lock it in?

  172. I can fall into that very easily.

  173. Here's another test for each of us.

  174. Are you more focused on how another Christian disappoints you

  175. than your own need for grace?

  176. Here's a third test.

  177. If you're like me in my flesh,

  178. we tend to think of God's commands

  179. separate from the person and work of God.

  180. Here's a fourth one.

  181. Are you laboring for assurance

  182. instead of resting in the completed salvation

  183. and then instead just laboring in joyful gratitude?

  184. In this church,

  185. they were clinging to an outward sign of assurance,

  186. circumcision of the flesh,

  187. rather than God's goodness as the covenant keeper.

  188. Paul's correcting them.

  189. Your works do not complete your salvation.

  190. Your works are an evidence of God saving you.

  191. The same Lord who decreed your salvation,

  192. who accomplished it,

  193. and who is applying it,

  194. He completes it in you.

  195. He gets all the glory.

  196. Look at verse 21 once again,

  197. the last part of chapter 2.

  198. If righteousness is through the law,

  199. through your works,

  200. then Christ died for nothing.

  201. That's what's at stake.

  202. It's the glory of Christ in our salvation.

  203. Do not reject the grace of God.

  204. Second question I want to put in front of you is this.

  205. How does legalism snag your heart?

  206. We've seen it's invisible and it's sticky.

  207. How does that actually trap you?

  208. How does legalism snag your heart?

  209. Legalism grows in our heart

  210. because of pride

  211. and because we have the wrong view of God.

  212. Those are the two root causes.

  213. We have pride in our flesh.

  214. We'll be battling our own pride

  215. until the last day we take a breath.

  216. The second thing is a wrong view of God.

  217. Well, where does that wrong view of God come from?

  218. Even for Christians.

  219. It's because Satan is the accuser.

  220. Satan is trying to take Christians

  221. and accuse God to you.

  222. Look at verse 15.

  223. I think we get at the heart

  224. of how they got snagged

  225. by the way Paul addresses them.

  226. Remember, they're sitting in separate tables.

  227. This is the table for the circumcised only.

  228. So you can get circumcised,

  229. then you'd be welcome over here.

  230. And Paul's basically calling out their pride.

  231. He says,

  232. we being Jews by nature

  233. and not Gentile sinners.

  234. He's saying,

  235. yes, I can talk as one at the cool table,

  236. the circumcised.

  237. We're not like the sinners over there.

  238. And then he just destroys them

  239. like only Paul can do.

  240. He's basically telling them,

  241. do you forget

  242. you were a sinner also?

  243. Have you not read the Bible,

  244. the Old Testament?

  245. It's been so clear all along.

  246. Jeremiah 4.4

  247. Circumcise yourselves to Yahweh

  248. and take away the foreskins of your heart.

  249. That's what Yahweh is after

  250. with his people.

  251. Jeremiah 9.25

  252. Behold the days come,

  253. says Yahweh,

  254. that I will punish all those

  255. who are circumcised only

  256. in their flesh.

  257. Have you not read your Bible?

  258. Well, what happens in legalism?

  259. In this case,

  260. they were worshipping a visible sign

  261. instead of the invisible Savior.

  262. Worshipping a visible sign

  263. instead of the invisible Savior.

  264. It's easy to do that

  265. or to want to do that, isn't it?

  266. I can see this big celebration.

  267. I can see people, you know,

  268. wearing t-shirts

  269. and getting baptized.

  270. I don't know if they've been discipled,

  271. but we're going to celebrate

  272. what's visible

  273. because I can do that.

  274. Rather, the invisible Savior

  275. because that requires faith.

  276. That requires me having

  277. a different view of God.

  278. And it's only possible

  279. if He's circumcised my heart.

  280. In this case,

  281. they were also emphasizing

  282. a physical behavior for Jesus,

  283. for God,

  284. rather than the spiritual union

  285. of a believer to Jesus.

  286. They were emphasizing

  287. a visible behavior.

  288. You go and do this

  289. so that we know.

  290. Instead of emphasizing union

  291. to the Savior.

  292. Legalism

  293. fell for the same thing

  294. that Adam and Eve fell for.

  295. Remember,

  296. it's the lie

  297. that God does not have

  298. your best interests in mind,

  299. that He is not loving and gracious,

  300. and that He requires you to work

  301. to complete your salvation

  302. by your own strength.

  303. And He's going to hold that over you

  304. until you're done.

  305. And that's a lie.

  306. When Satan tempted Eve,

  307. remember what Eve said?

  308. We're not supposed to eat

  309. of any of the fruits.

  310. Oh, that's the wrong view of God.

  311. God said,

  312. eat from all of the fruit,

  313. from all the trees.

  314. This principle of legalism

  315. was introduced,

  316. whether Eve came up with that

  317. from Satan,

  318. or maybe Adam preached it wrong

  319. to her that way.

  320. One or the other,

  321. they were being legalistic

  322. with what God had told them.

  323. Jesus attacks this

  324. in almost every parable.

  325. Think of the prodigal son.

  326. There's the elder brother.

  327. He refuses his father.

  328. He refuses the feast

  329. that his father's inviting him to

  330. because of the grace

  331. the father showed

  332. the rebellious little brother.

  333. Think of the workers.

  334. They worked all day

  335. for a day's wage,

  336. and that was fine

  337. until they saw those

  338. who showed up late

  339. got the same wage.

  340. That's when they had major issues.

  341. It's seeing that God is gracious

  342. that makes a legalist mad.

  343. That's what exposes legalism

  344. in our pride

  345. and in our flesh.

  346. If we feel strongly

  347. that I need to compel

  348. a saved sinner

  349. and I need to bind

  350. their conscience

  351. more than Jesus Christ himself does,

  352. then I'm stuck

  353. in this web of legalism.

  354. Verse 21,

  355. if righteousness

  356. were that way,

  357. then Christ died

  358. for nothing.

  359. To get trapped in that

  360. is to reject

  361. God's grace.

  362. That's how legalism

  363. snags us though.

  364. Third question,

  365. how does the Holy Spirit

  366. untangle

  367. you and me

  368. from this web

  369. of legalism?

  370. We see how he gets stuck in it.

  371. How does the Holy Spirit

  372. set us free

  373. and untangle us

  374. out of that?

  375. Well,

  376. in a short answer,

  377. the Holy Spirit

  378. gospels you

  379. out of it.

  380. The Holy Spirit

  381. gospels us

  382. out of that.

  383. That's what Peter

  384. hears from Paul next.

  385. Paul preaches

  386. two things

  387. with the gospel.

  388. What's the same

  389. and what changed.

  390. First,

  391. what's the same?

  392. The Lord reminds us

  393. that He is the same.

  394. He does not change.

  395. He has always

  396. saved anyone

  397. older new covenant

  398. the same way.

  399. Look at verse 15.

  400. We being Jews

  401. by nature,

  402. Jews according

  403. to the flesh,

  404. circumcised

  405. from the line

  406. of Abraham

  407. and not Gentile

  408. sinners.

  409. Verse 16,

  410. yet knowing

  411. that a man

  412. is not justified

  413. by the works

  414. of the law

  415. but through

  416. faith in Jesus Christ.

  417. Read Galatians 3.

  418. This is how God

  419. saved Abraham.

  420. It's by faith.

  421. We know this.

  422. God has always

  423. said this.

  424. Take for example

  425. Hosea 6.6.

  426. For I desire

  427. steadfast love

  428. and not sacrifice

  429. the knowledge of God

  430. rather than burnt offerings.

  431. That's what God

  432. is always after.

  433. He desires

  434. a covenant love.

  435. He desires

  436. hesed,

  437. the Hebrew word

  438. for steadfast love,

  439. covenant bond

  440. with His people,

  441. not the ceremonial law.

  442. That's what Samuel

  443. preached to David

  444. in his sin.

  445. 1 Samuel 15.22.

  446. Has the Lord

  447. has the Lord

  448. as great delight

  449. in burnt offerings

  450. and sacrifices

  451. as in obeying

  452. the voice of the Lord.

  453. Behold,

  454. to obey

  455. is better

  456. than sacrifice

  457. and to listen

  458. than the fat

  459. of rams.

  460. The Lord

  461. is always after

  462. the covenant love,

  463. the covenant bond,

  464. the covenant

  465. obedience

  466. of His people.

  467. So what's not changed

  468. is God.

  469. What's not changed

  470. is how God

  471. measures

  472. and requires

  473. obedience

  474. and that's the

  475. moral law of God.

  476. The moral law of God

  477. is the same law.

  478. Adam and Eve

  479. had it.

  480. Every person

  481. that's made

  482. in the image of God

  483. has the moral

  484. transcendent

  485. law of God.

  486. We saw last week

  487. in the Mosaic covenant

  488. the Lord

  489. writes this law,

  490. the moral law,

  491. the Ten Commandments

  492. with His own finger

  493. on tablets

  494. of stone.

  495. And then He gives

  496. the ceremonial law

  497. as a resource

  498. to make that right

  499. or to understand now

  500. how you can be

  501. in communion with God

  502. knowing that you're a sinner.

  503. Why did God require

  504. bulls and goats

  505. of the Israelites?

  506. It's because they had

  507. broken His moral law.

  508. Why did the Israelites

  509. need priests

  510. that would mediate

  511. a blood ceremony

  512. for the forgiveness

  513. that God would

  514. attribute to them

  515. because those animals

  516. don't forgive anything?

  517. It's because they knew

  518. the moral law of God

  519. and it was given

  520. as clearly

  521. as anyone could ask.

  522. The moral law

  523. reflects the nature

  524. of the holy God.

  525. God does not change.

  526. So that's how

  527. He first gospels

  528. Him through it

  529. is clarifying

  530. God does not change,

  531. the moral law

  532. does not change.

  533. But now what does change?

  534. The Lord reveals to us

  535. that Christ's incarnation

  536. and work

  537. changes everything

  538. for His people

  539. in the best way.

  540. What do we mean?

  541. Well, Paul says next

  542. in verse 16,

  543. he says,

  544. even we,

  545. meaning ethnic

  546. national Jews

  547. in the same way

  548. as the Gentiles,

  549. we believe

  550. in Christ Jesus

  551. that we might be

  552. justified by faith

  553. in Christ.

  554. We are justified

  555. in Christ.

  556. if you are in Christ,

  557. being united

  558. not by any works

  559. but by faith alone,

  560. you are in Him

  561. and God declares you

  562. justified.

  563. You are righteous.

  564. You are holy.

  565. You can enter

  566. the holy of holies

  567. if you are in Christ.

  568. He tore the veil.

  569. This is why

  570. it changes everything.

  571. But it changes it

  572. for everyone

  573. who is in Christ.

  574. The same.

  575. Not by works of the law

  576. because no flesh,

  577. no flesh,

  578. no matter what

  579. people group you're from,

  580. will be justified

  581. by the works

  582. of the law.

  583. He explains

  584. this same point

  585. to the church

  586. in Rome,

  587. Romans 2.29.

  588. Paul says,

  589. He is a Jew

  590. who is one inwardly.

  591. Circumcision

  592. is that of the heart

  593. by the Spirit.

  594. So you're saying

  595. circumcision has no

  596. relationship to baptism?

  597. No, we're saying

  598. that the church

  599. patterns itself

  600. off of New Jerusalem,

  601. the heavenly Jerusalem.

  602. Those who have been

  603. circumcised in the heart

  604. receive the sign

  605. of the new covenant.

  606. Moses didn't only

  607. give the Ten Commandments

  608. written by God's finger

  609. to the people of Israel.

  610. That's the moral law.

  611. He also received

  612. from the Lord

  613. a ceremonial law

  614. and a civil law.

  615. The ceremonial law

  616. was fulfilled

  617. by the person

  618. and work of Jesus.

  619. Ephesians 2.15.

  620. He abolished

  621. the law

  622. and commandments

  623. expressed

  624. in the ordinances

  625. that he might

  626. create in himself

  627. one new man

  628. in the place of two

  629. and so making peace.

  630. What about

  631. the civil laws?

  632. Well, the civil laws

  633. were given

  634. for national Israel

  635. as their rule

  636. under God

  637. as their king

  638. for life

  639. in that land.

  640. How does the New Testament

  641. command the church?

  642. Well, the New Testament,

  643. the church,

  644. is an international

  645. people of God

  646. spread throughout

  647. a lot of different

  648. nations and cities

  649. and rules

  650. by those people

  651. and we are told

  652. to submit ourselves

  653. to those worldly rulers

  654. that God has ordained,

  655. Romans 13,

  656. as long as their laws

  657. don't contradict

  658. the higher law

  659. of God.

  660. So now for the church,

  661. what's the role

  662. of the law?

  663. What's the role

  664. of the law?

  665. Well, we can be feeling

  666. at this point,

  667. I hate legalism.

  668. I don't want to be that.

  669. I want to be like

  670. that dragon flying

  671. swerve as far away

  672. from legalism

  673. as I can.

  674. But that's only

  675. the first invisible web.

  676. The second sticky

  677. web from hell

  678. is this.

  679. You are saved,

  680. but you're not

  681. united to Christ.

  682. You're saved somehow,

  683. you're declared righteous,

  684. but you're not

  685. united to Christ.

  686. Verse 17,

  687. we read,

  688. If while we sought

  689. to be justified

  690. in Christ,

  691. we ourselves

  692. were found sinners,

  693. is Christ a servant,

  694. a promoter,

  695. a minister of sin?

  696. Certainly not.

  697. Absolutely.

  698. not.

  699. Verse 18,

  700. For if I build up again

  701. those things

  702. which I destroyed,

  703. I prove myself

  704. a lawbreaker.

  705. This is a,

  706. these verses are

  707. difficult to interpret.

  708. I'm going to save you

  709. my exercises

  710. trying to figure it out.

  711. I think the best clarity

  712. I got was from

  713. Calvin's commentary.

  714. When Paul says

  715. in verse 18,

  716. If I build up again

  717. those things,

  718. Calvin's interpretation

  719. is that

  720. Paul is using language

  721. in general,

  722. like,

  723. I wouldn't even do this.

  724. I wouldn't tear something down

  725. just to build that same thing

  726. back up.

  727. If I wouldn't do it,

  728. Jesus Christ definitely

  729. doesn't work that way either.

  730. That's the argument.

  731. So,

  732. Jesus Christ is no

  733. lawbreaker.

  734. His work does not

  735. contradict

  736. himself.

  737. 1 John 3,

    1 John 3:8

  738. verse 8 says

  739. that Jesus came

  740. to destroy

  741. the works

  742. of the devil.

  743. And Christ

  744. does not

  745. build

  746. sin

  747. in his people.

  748. Because that would be

  749. a foundation

  750. of destroying

  751. the works of the devil,

  752. destroying sin

  753. in the life

  754. of his people.

  755. Why would Jesus

  756. now be a minister

  757. of sin?

  758. Why would Jesus

  759. be ruling over

  760. his people

  761. like saving them

  762. but not

  763. freeing them

  764. of that bondage

  765. to sin anymore?

  766. That's the argument.

  767. It might be better

  768. understood by this

  769. paraphrase by Matthew Henry.

  770. To live in sin

  771. because you are

  772. justified by faith

  773. alone

  774. is to try to make

  775. Christ

  776. the minister of sin

  777. at any thought

  778. of which

  779. all Christian hearts

  780. would shudder.

  781. Matthew Henry

  782. is pointing out

  783. that same thing.

  784. If you are truly

  785. in Christ,

  786. the thought

  787. of Christ

  788. now building

  789. a life of sin

  790. in you

  791. would make you shudder.

  792. Anyone who's

  793. truly in Christ

  794. would never view sin

  795. that way.

  796. But why can we

  797. get tangled up

  798. in this other

  799. invisible web?

  800. Why is it,

  801. why does it work

  802. on us?

  803. Sinclair Ferguson

  804. calls these two

  805. unidentical twins,

  806. like non-identical twins

  807. from the same womb.

  808. They both come from hell

  809. and they both appeal

  810. to the same thing.

  811. They appeal to

  812. our pride,

  813. again,

  814. and a wrong view

  815. of God.

  816. when we become

  817. frustrated

  818. by our weakness

  819. to obey

  820. God's law,

  821. we all have,

  822. that's Romans 7,

  823. we don't do it well,

  824. we don't love God

  825. and obey Him

  826. as much as we wish

  827. we did.

  828. Then what our pride

  829. wants to do

  830. is to blame

  831. God's law.

  832. Doesn't it?

  833. Well,

  834. surely I can't be

  835. the problem,

  836. it must be

  837. the law of God

  838. that's the problem.

  839. in Christ,

  840. you are justified

  841. and you are no longer

  842. under the dominion

  843. of sin.

  844. If you are in Christ,

  845. He will rule

  846. over your life

  847. as your covenant Lord.

  848. You are truly

  849. in covenant

  850. with God

  851. through Jesus Christ.

  852. Sin no longer

  853. has dominion

  854. over you

  855. if you are in Christ.

  856. 1 Corinthians 7,

  857. 19 says,

  858. for neither

  859. circumcision counts

  860. for anything

  861. nor uncircumcision

  862. but keeping

  863. the commands

  864. of God.

  865. So it's the Christian

  866. who can read

  867. Psalm 119

  868. and agree

  869. how I love

  870. your law.

  871. It slays me,

  872. it makes me humble,

  873. it teaches me

  874. I am weak

  875. on my own

  876. but it brings me

  877. back to my union

  878. in Christ,

  879. the only mediator.

  880. That's why I love

  881. your law.

  882. I don't hate

  883. the law,

  884. I don't blame

  885. the law.

  886. Your works

  887. do not

  888. complete your salvation

  889. but your works

  890. are evidence

  891. of your salvation.

  892. And just like

  893. legalism

  894. is to reject

  895. the grace of God,

  896. lawlessness

  897. is the same.

  898. You reject grace

  899. if you detach

  900. the way you live

  901. from the person

  902. and work

  903. of Christ.

  904. You have a wrong

  905. view of God

  906. if you get trapped

  907. in this

  908. because it means

  909. you don't believe

  910. that Christ

  911. has any real power.

  912. You don't believe

  913. that He loves you

  914. even more than

  915. you love yourself

  916. because He does.

  917. Satan wants you

  918. to have that wrong view.

  919. Satan wants to

  920. accuse God to you.

  921. Satan wants you

  922. to not believe

  923. God could possibly

  924. want you

  925. to have assurance.

  926. And there's nothing

  927. that God wants more

  928. than for you

  929. to be assured

  930. of your union

  931. and you're standing

  932. before Him

  933. in Christ.

  934. That's the gospel.

  935. When you get

  936. stuck in this web,

  937. you accuse God's law,

  938. you believe that

  939. God is not love

  940. or good,

  941. Satan stirs up

  942. that pride

  943. into even more

  944. disobedience.

  945. And what this does

  946. is your disobedience

  947. and mine,

  948. it robs us

  949. of ever truly

  950. enjoying assurance,

  951. of ever truly

  952. trusting God

  953. and trusting

  954. that His grace

  955. sanctifies you

  956. because you truly

  957. are in Christ.

  958. When we get stuck

  959. in one,

  960. we want to overreact

  961. and we're like

  962. that pendulum

  963. on an old

  964. grandfather clock.

  965. We want to

  966. overcorrect,

  967. don't we?

  968. Satan wants us

  969. to think that

  970. lawlessness

  971. does not

  972. free you.

  973. I'm going to

  974. say that a different

  975. way.

  976. I'm so sorry.

  977. When I'm stuck

  978. in legalism,

  979. I think,

  980. in my flesh,

  981. with Satan accusing,

  982. I think the way

  983. to get out of

  984. legalism

  985. is to go to

  986. lawlessness.

  987. When I'm in

  988. lawlessness,

  989. I think the way

  990. to correct that

  991. is to go back

  992. over to legalism.

  993. Look at what

  994. Paul says next

  995. in verse 19.

  996. He says,

  997. For I,

  998. through the law,

  999. died to the law,

  1000. that I might live

  1001. to God.

  1002. For I,

  1003. through the law,

  1004. died to the law,

  1005. that I might live

  1006. to God.

  1007. Paul is saying

  1008. lawlessness is not

  1009. what frees you

  1010. out of legalism.

  1011. It's the law

  1012. that kills

  1013. legalism in you.

  1014. The problem

  1015. was never

  1016. God's law.

  1017. Satan wants

  1018. to use God's

  1019. commands to

  1020. deceive you

  1021. about the nature

  1022. of God

  1023. who gave the

  1024. command.

  1025. But the problem

  1026. all along

  1027. has been my

  1028. own sin.

  1029. Would you turn

  1030. with me to

  1031. Romans 7?

  1032. Look at

  1033. Romans 7,

    Romans 7:8

  1034. verse 8.

  1035. Romans is laid

  1036. out as a

  1037. systematic

  1038. theology.

  1039. It's laid

  1040. out sequentially

  1041. in a very

  1042. purposeful

  1043. order.

  1044. I believe

  1045. Romans 6

  1046. is about

  1047. justification.

  1048. I believe

  1049. Romans 7

  1050. is about

  1051. a Christian

  1052. being sanctified.

  1053. Romans 8

  1054. is about

  1055. assurance.

  1056. Romans 7,

  1057. starting at

  1058. verse 8.

  1059. Paul,

  1060. writing in the

  1061. first person,

  1062. it's his own

  1063. testimony in

  1064. this battle.

  1065. He says,

  1066. sin,

  1067. seizing an

  1068. opportunity,

  1069. how?

  1070. Through the

  1071. commandment,

  1072. through the

  1073. moral law,

  1074. stirred up

  1075. all kinds

  1076. of covetousness

  1077. that was

  1078. inside of me.

  1079. The law of

  1080. God exposed

  1081. the sin

  1082. in me.

  1083. Is the

  1084. problem the

  1085. law or

  1086. my sin?

  1087. Paul's giving

  1088. his testimony.

  1089. The problem

  1090. is my sin.

  1091. Look at

  1092. verse 10.

  1093. Paul writes,

  1094. the very

  1095. commandment

  1096. that promised

  1097. life proved

  1098. to be death

  1099. to me.

  1100. Under the

  1101. Mosaic

  1102. covenant,

  1103. the arrangement

  1104. was do this

  1105. and live.

  1106. If you can

  1107. obey it all

  1108. perfectly,

  1109. personally,

  1110. and perpetually,

  1111. the promise

  1112. of life.

  1113. So it

  1114. promised life,

  1115. but it

  1116. proved to be

  1117. death to me

  1118. because I

  1119. can't do

  1120. that.

  1121. Verse 11,

  1122. for sin,

  1123. seizing an

  1124. opportunity

  1125. through the

  1126. commandment

  1127. deceived me

  1128. and through

  1129. it killed

  1130. me.

  1131. Verse 12,

  1132. so the law

  1133. is holy

  1134. and the

  1135. commandment

  1136. is holy

  1137. and righteous

  1138. and good.

  1139. The law

  1140. of God

  1141. is holy,

  1142. the moral

  1143. law of God

  1144. is righteous

  1145. and it's

  1146. good.

  1147. The moral

  1148. law is holy,

  1149. it's from

  1150. God,

  1151. from the

  1152. creator,

  1153. two creatures.

  1154. It is righteous,

  1155. it is still

  1156. pleasing to

  1157. God,

  1158. it has not

  1159. been abrogated

  1160. and it is

  1161. good,

  1162. it is a

  1163. blessing from

  1164. God for

  1165. me.

  1166. That's how we

  1167. ought to view

  1168. the law.

  1169. You can turn

  1170. back to Galatians

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  1171. chapter 2.

  1172. Paul says,

  1173. through the

  1174. law,

  1175. I died

  1176. to the

  1177. law.

  1178. God's

  1179. law

  1180. killed me

  1181. in the

  1182. best way.

  1183. God's law

  1184. is what

  1185. killed my

  1186. pride.

  1187. God's law

  1188. killed

  1189. legalism

  1190. inside me.

  1191. When we

  1192. use God's

  1193. law,

  1194. when we

  1195. use the

  1196. Ten

  1197. Commandments

  1198. as a

  1199. mirror,

  1200. like we

  1201. read in

  1202. James,

  1203. it does

  1204. this.

  1205. It helps

  1206. us to

  1207. die to

  1208. legalism.

  1209. It shows

  1210. us,

  1211. if I'm

  1212. not in

  1213. Christ,

  1214. I am

  1215. utterly

  1216. hopeless

  1217. because I

  1218. can produce

  1219. no good

  1220. works on

  1221. my own.

  1222. When God

  1223. exposes sin

  1224. in you

  1225. and me,

  1226. it makes

  1227. us want to

  1228. praise Him

  1229. for one

  1230. reason.

  1231. It shows

  1232. me that

  1233. I am

  1234. united to

  1235. Christ on

  1236. the point

  1237. of my

  1238. sin first

  1239. because it

  1240. was my

  1241. sin that

  1242. Christ paid

  1243. for on

  1244. the cross.

  1245. And

  1246. therefore,

  1247. I'm united

  1248. to Christ

  1249. in His

  1250. paying for

  1251. my sin.

  1252. And

  1253. because my

  1254. sin unites

  1255. me to

  1256. Christ's

  1257. crucifixion

  1258. in my

  1259. place,

  1260. look at

  1261. what Paul

  1262. writes in

  1263. verse 20.

  1264. That's how

  1265. I,

  1266. my pride,

  1267. my sin,

  1268. my flesh,

  1269. have been

  1270. crucified

  1271. with

  1272. Christ.

  1273. The law

  1274. is not

  1275. what dies.

  1276. The law

  1277. kills our

  1278. pride and

  1279. it kills

  1280. legalism

  1281. inside of

  1282. us.

  1283. We are

  1284. dead to

  1285. legalism,

  1286. we are

  1287. dead to

  1288. sin's

  1289. dominion,

  1290. but the

  1291. law does

  1292. not die

  1293. because the

  1294. law is a

  1295. reflection of

  1296. the eternal

  1297. transcendent

  1298. God.

  1299. And Christ

  1300. rules over

  1301. His people

  1302. as He

  1303. always has

  1304. with a

  1305. good,

  1306. holy,

  1307. and righteous

  1308. law.

  1309. But we

  1310. don't take

  1311. the law

  1312. as we had

  1313. to at

  1314. Mount Sinai,

  1315. the people

  1316. of God

  1317. with trembling

  1318. knowing they'll

  1319. come short.

  1320. We take it

  1321. from the

  1322. hand of

  1323. Christ,

  1324. our Savior.

  1325. We take

  1326. it with

  1327. gratitude.

  1328. If you

  1329. are in

  1330. Christ,

  1331. when you

  1332. break God's

  1333. moral law,

  1334. it has no

  1335. power to

  1336. condemn you

  1337. any longer.

  1338. You are

  1339. free from

  1340. that curse,

  1341. and instead

  1342. you receive

  1343. only blessings

  1344. because it

  1345. draws you

  1346. back to

  1347. your need

  1348. to be

  1349. united to

  1350. Him again.

  1351. Well,

  1352. there's still

  1353. one problem

  1354. we've got to

  1355. resolve,

  1356. at least in

  1357. my own

  1358. mind.

  1359. we are

  1360. no better

  1361. as Gentiles

  1362. than the

  1363. Jews.

  1364. That's

  1365. Paul's

  1366. whole

  1367. argument.

  1368. Jews,

  1369. you are

  1370. no better

  1371. than the

  1372. Gentiles.

  1373. Gentiles,

  1374. you are

  1375. no better

  1376. than the

  1377. Jews either.

  1378. If the

  1379. Jews,

  1380. the Israelites,

  1381. lacked the

  1382. power,

  1383. the love

  1384. inside of

  1385. them like

  1386. Hosea

  1387. exposed to

  1388. keep the

  1389. law and

  1390. obey God,

  1391. what's our

  1392. hope?

  1393. We lack

  1394. that same

  1395. power if

  1396. we're under

  1397. that same

  1398. covenant.

  1399. I believe

  1400. that's what

  1401. is handled

  1402. in verse

  1403. 20 and

  1404. 21.

  1405. the power

  1406. that you

  1407. and I

  1408. lack on

  1409. our own.

  1410. Look at

  1411. verse 20.

  1412. Paul says,

  1413. now that I've

  1414. been crucified

  1415. with Christ,

  1416. it is no

  1417. longer I

  1418. who live,

  1419. but it's

  1420. Christ who

  1421. lives in

  1422. me.

  1423. That life

  1424. which I

  1425. now live

  1426. in the

  1427. flesh,

  1428. I live

  1429. by faith

  1430. in the

  1431. Son of

  1432. God who

  1433. loved me

  1434. and gave

  1435. himself up

  1436. for me.

  1437. What is

  1438. the secret

  1439. to walking

  1440. in Christ?

  1441. What is

  1442. the secret

  1443. to having

  1444. the power

  1445. we would

  1446. lack?

  1447. Well,

  1448. on Mount

  1449. Sinai,

  1450. the Lord

  1451. called this

  1452. mediator up

  1453. the mountain

  1454. and the

  1455. Lord wrote

  1456. on these

  1457. stone tablets

  1458. the moral

  1459. law and

  1460. he sent

  1461. them back

  1462. down with

  1463. Moses

  1464. mediating,

  1465. ruling over

  1466. the people

  1467. with God

  1468. as their

  1469. king.

  1470. And the

  1471. law gave

  1472. him a

  1473. direction,

  1474. live this

  1475. way,

  1476. this is

  1477. pleasing to

  1478. me.

  1479. But it

  1480. simply

  1481. exposed

  1482. their own

  1483. flesh,

  1484. their own

  1485. inability to

  1486. keep it

  1487. by their

  1488. strength.

  1489. See the

  1490. similarities.

  1491. Moses himself

  1492. prophesied,

  1493. there will be

  1494. a prophet

  1495. like me,

  1496. one of your

  1497. brothers who

  1498. will come

  1499. and he will

  1500. give you

  1501. God's law.

  1502. And Jesus

  1503. in the same

  1504. way,

  1505. having completed

  1506. his work,

  1507. he ascended

  1508. to the highest

  1509. heaven.

  1510. He ascended

  1511. and from

  1512. there he

  1513. gives that

  1514. same law,

  1515. but he

  1516. gives it by

  1517. the power

  1518. of the

  1519. Holy Spirit

  1520. not written

  1521. on stone

  1522. tablets,

  1523. but written

  1524. in the

  1525. hearts of

  1526. his people.

  1527. The Holy

  1528. Spirit not

  1529. only writes

  1530. the law

  1531. in our

  1532. hearts,

  1533. but he

  1534. also

  1535. indwells

  1536. the believer

  1537. and he

  1538. gives us

  1539. the power

  1540. that we

  1541. lack

  1542. to walk

  1543. with him.

  1544. 2 John

  1545. 1.6

  1546. says,

  1547. this is

  1548. love,

  1549. that we

  1550. walk

  1551. according

  1552. to his

  1553. commands.

  1554. Love

  1555. and the

  1556. commands

  1557. working

  1558. together.

  1559. Sinclair

  1560. Ferguson

  1561. commented,

  1562. love for

  1563. Jesus is

  1564. expressed

  1565. by commandment

  1566. keeping.

  1567. Love is

  1568. the fulfillment

  1569. of the

  1570. law.

  1571. Love is

  1572. never said

  1573. to be a

  1574. replacement

  1575. for law.

  1576. It was

  1577. not legalism

  1578. for Jesus

  1579. to do

  1580. everything

  1581. his father

  1582. commanded,

  1583. nor is

  1584. it for

  1585. us.

  1586. The

  1587. difference

  1588. between

  1589. you and

  1590. I as

  1591. Gentiles

  1592. with the

  1593. Israelites

  1594. is that

  1595. Jesus has

  1596. kept the

  1597. law savingly

  1598. for us

  1599. already.

  1600. And on

  1601. top of

  1602. that,

  1603. he has

  1604. sent his

  1605. Holy Spirit,

  1606. what the

  1607. New Testament

  1608. calls the

  1609. Spirit of

  1610. Christ,

  1611. to live

  1612. in and

  1613. through his

  1614. people.

  1615. Hebrews 8

  1616. says,

  1617. everyone in

  1618. the covenant

  1619. with Christ

  1620. will know

  1621. him.

  1622. And he

  1623. will put

  1624. his law

  1625. in our

  1626. minds

  1627. and in

  1628. our

  1629. hearts.

  1630. We're

  1631. told as

  1632. Christians

  1633. to work

  1634. out your

  1635. salvation

  1636. with

  1637. trembling.

  1638. We're

  1639. told to

  1640. run the

  1641. race.

  1642. This is

  1643. language of

  1644. forward

  1645. movement

  1646. as a

  1647. Christian.

  1648. If you're

  1649. in Christ,

  1650. you are

  1651. marching

  1652. behind him,

  1653. you are

  1654. following

  1655. him.

  1656. And

  1657. forward

  1658. movement,

  1659. Sinclair

  1660. Ferguson

  1661. again

  1662. pointed out,

  1663. requires

  1664. two things,

  1665. a direction

  1666. and a

  1667. power.

  1668. He gave

  1669. the example

  1670. of a

  1671. train,

  1672. an engine

  1673. on the

  1674. railway

  1675. tracks.

  1676. The Ten

  1677. Commandments

  1678. are the

  1679. tracks.

  1680. It gives

  1681. us a

  1682. direction

  1683. of where

  1684. we go.

  1685. But there's

  1686. this massive

  1687. iron horse,

  1688. this engine

  1689. that needs

  1690. to be moved.

  1691. Where does

  1692. that power

  1693. come from?

  1694. Well,

  1695. the engine's

  1696. power is

  1697. the Holy

  1698. Spirit in

  1699. the believer.

  1700. It's the

  1701. love of

  1702. God poured

  1703. into our

  1704. hearts

  1705. continuously,

  1706. filling us

  1707. back up,

  1708. jet engine

  1709. to propel

  1710. us on

  1711. the tracks.

  1712. So in

  1713. the new

  1714. covenant,

  1715. we have

  1716. both.

  1717. We have

  1718. what the

  1719. Israelites

  1720. lacked.

  1721. We have

  1722. the direction

  1723. that we

  1724. share,

  1725. that doesn't

  1726. change,

  1727. but now

  1728. we have

  1729. the power.

  1730. We have

  1731. folks who

  1732. have been

  1733. preparing for

  1734. baptism,

  1735. and this

  1736. is what is

  1737. pictured in

  1738. baptism,

  1739. buried with

  1740. Christ,

  1741. and then

  1742. raised to

  1743. newness of

  1744. life.

  1745. You have

  1746. been crucified

  1747. with Christ,

  1748. united to

  1749. Him on

  1750. the point

  1751. of your

  1752. sin,

  1753. and now

  1754. you're

  1755. raised to

  1756. newness of

  1757. life with

  1758. the Holy

  1759. Spirit living

  1760. inside of

  1761. you.

  1762. That life

  1763. which I

  1764. now live

  1765. in the

  1766. flesh,

  1767. I live

  1768. by faith

  1769. in the

  1770. Son of

  1771. God who

  1772. loved me

  1773. and gave

  1774. Himself

  1775. up for

  1776. me.

  1777. You

  1778. notice how

  1779. this is

  1780. really the

  1781. refrain of

  1782. every one

  1783. of your

  1784. favorite hymns

  1785. and songs.

  1786. I pulled

  1787. a couple

  1788. examples.

  1789. John Bunyan

  1790. who wrote

  1791. Pilgrim's

  1792. Progress,

  1793. he put this

  1794. in first

  1795. person,

  1796. how this

  1797. was true

  1798. for him

  1799. in a

  1800. poem.

  1801. Run,

  1802. John,

  1803. run,

  1804. the law

  1805. commands,

  1806. but gives

  1807. neither feet

  1808. nor hands.

  1809. Better

  1810. news the

  1811. gospel brings,

  1812. it bids me

  1813. fly and

  1814. gives me

  1815. wings.

  1816. William

  1817. Cooper,

  1818. in a hymn

  1819. he wrote,

  1820. to see the

  1821. law by

  1822. Christ

  1823. fulfilled

  1824. and hear

  1825. His

  1826. pardoning

  1827. voice

  1828. changes

  1829. a slave

  1830. into a

  1831. child

  1832. and duty

  1833. into choice.

  1834. My

  1835. encouragement

  1836. for us

  1837. today,

  1838. don't

  1839. reject

  1840. God's

  1841. grace.

  1842. Don't

  1843. let your

  1844. pride

  1845. get you

  1846. entangled

  1847. in either

  1848. one of

  1849. these

  1850. webs.

  1851. Don't

  1852. let the

  1853. lies of

  1854. Satan

  1855. accuse

  1856. God

  1857. to you.

  1858. Believe

  1859. who

  1860. He

  1861. is.

  1862. As

  1863. we'll

  1864. sing in

  1865. a moment,

  1866. arise,

  1867. poor,

  1868. wretched

  1869. sinner,

  1870. and go

  1871. to Jesus.

  1872. He

  1873. will

  1874. embrace

  1875. you

  1876. in His

  1877. arms.

  1878. Rest

  1879. in His

  1880. grace

  1881. again.

  1882. Let's

  1883. pray.

  1884. Lord,

  1885. thank You

  1886. for this

  1887. glorious

  1888. gospel

  1889. that we

  1890. do have

  1891. life

  1892. in Jesus

  1893. Christ.

  1894. We have

  1895. been

  1896. crucified

  1897. with

  1898. Christ

  1899. for our

  1900. sin,

  1901. but we

  1902. have

  1903. life

  1904. in

  1905. Christ

  1906. by Your

  1907. power

  1908. so that

  1909. it is

  1910. no longer

  1911. I who

  1912. live,

  1913. but it's

  1914. Christ who

  1915. lives in

  1916. me.

  1917. Please work

  1918. this out,

  1919. Lord,

  1920. in every

  1921. aspect of

  1922. our lives

  1923. for Your

  1924. glory we

  1925. ask.

  1926. Amen.

  1927. Amen.

  1928. Amen.

  1929. Amen.

  1930. Amen.

  1931. Amen.

  1932. Amen.

  1933. Amen.

  1934. Amen.

  1935. Amen.

  1936. Amen.

  1937. Amen.

  1938. Amen.

  1939. Amen.

  1940. Amen.

  1941. Amen.

  1942. Amen.
