  1. We're pausing in our Covenant Theology series, and this summer we'll be back in the Psalms.

  2. So next week we'll be in Psalm 139, and then we'll continue where we left off last summer in Psalm 9 and onward.

  3. So we have a special little message today unrelated to Covenant Theology or the Psalms,

  4. and it's a message of comfort.

  5. It's a message for those that will face death and dying.

  6. So hear these words, 1 Thessalonians 4, verses 13 through 18.

    1 Thessalonians 4:13–18

  7. As I read this, I read it believing that this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear and sufficient word.

  8. It's God's very own word for you, His people.

  9. When I'm done reading, I'll say this is the word of the Lord.

  10. If you receive it that way, you can say thanks be to God.

  11. 1 Thessalonians 4, verse 13.

    1 Thessalonians 4:13

  12. But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep,

  13. that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.

  14. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus,

  15. God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep.

  16. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord,

  17. that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord,

  18. will not precede those who have fallen asleep.

  19. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command,

  20. with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God.

  21. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

  22. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds

  23. to meet the Lord in the air.

  24. And so we will always be with the Lord.

  25. Therefore, encourage one another with these words.

  26. This is the word of the Lord.

  27. Thanks be to God. You may be seated.

  28. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  29. Let's pray.

  30. Lord, may your word go forth like the rain.

  31. May it bring refreshment to those who are in a desert.

  32. May it bring food to those who are hungry.

  33. May your word wash over each one of us,

  34. making us more like your Son, Jesus Christ.

  35. For your glory we ask. Amen.

  36. There was an old preacher,

  37. and he confessed that his goal was simply to preach,

  38. as never to preach again,

  39. and as a dying man to dying men.

  40. That's been my prayer as I think about each of you this week

  41. in preparing for this message.

  42. There's nothing more important we could think about

  43. for the next 30 to 40 minutes

  44. than your life and the life to come.

  45. John Flabel,

  46. I told you a little bit about his life and biography back in the fall,

  47. so I won't repeat that now,

  48. but he was a faithful Puritan minister

  49. at the height of persecution in the 1600s.

  50. Listen to his words on this topic.

  51. Neglecting to prepare yourself for death

  52. is not brave but foolish,

  53. like going blindly into war.

  54. If you're wise,

  55. you will use your life

  56. to prepare for your death.

  57. That's the end of Flabel's quote.

  58. To prepare for death in a time of peace

  59. without physical persecution

  60. is a discipline.

  61. In persecution,

  62. preparation for death

  63. is a daily requirement.

  64. This was the case for the church

  65. in Thessalonica.

  66. It was planted by Paul.

  67. We read of this in Acts 17.

  68. It's that story of when

  69. the Judaizers of Thessalonica,

  70. who were among the most fierce

  71. and the most aggressive,

  72. they chased him,

  73. and he had to be lowered out the window

  74. of Jason's home.

  75. Do you remember that story?

  76. Christians in Thessalonica

  77. were hunted down.

  78. They were often hurt.

  79. Thinking about death

  80. was routine.

  81. That's what it meant

  82. to follow Christ.

  83. John Gill commented on

  84. this church in Thessalonica.

  85. Those who had not been

  86. directly attacked

  87. or persecuted

  88. would have had someone

  89. close to them

  90. removed from the church

  91. by violence

  92. through the rage

  93. and fury

  94. of their persecutors

  95. for whom their surviving friends

  96. were pressed with sorrow

  97. and grief.

  98. Think of a church like ours.

  99. If only one of our members,

  100. one of our regular

  101. brothers and sisters

  102. with whom we are used

  103. to fellowshipping every week

  104. is all of a sudden removed

  105. because of persecution,

  106. we would grieve this.

  107. We would grieve it

  108. most likely

  109. for years and years.

  110. The clinical definition

  111. of grief

  112. is anguish

  113. experienced

  114. after significant loss.

  115. Each of us

  116. has experienced

  117. significant loss.

  118. Grief often includes

  119. physiological distress,

  120. separation anxiety,

  121. confusion,

  122. yearning,

  123. obsessive dwelling

  124. on the past,

  125. and apprehension

  126. about the future.

  127. So beloved congregation

  128. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  129. the message I want to bring

  130. to you today is

  131. how do we as Christians

  132. comfort one another?

  133. That's what Paul

  134. is doing with these words

  135. to the church

  136. in Thessalonica.

  137. That's what I pray

  138. the Holy Spirit

  139. will do among us.

  140. Teach us

  141. how to comfort

  142. one another.

  143. Christians need comforting,

  144. don't we?

  145. So I've got five ways

  146. in which I think

  147. we can learn

  148. to do this from Paul.

  149. The first is that

  150. we recognize

  151. Christians must grieve

  152. to.

  153. Christians must grieve

  154. to.

  155. When you have

  156. the opportunity,

  157. we should hear this story

  158. from one another.

  159. When have you felt

  160. the burn

  161. of pain

  162. and grief?

  163. I see three things

  164. in verse 13.

  165. The first is this.

  166. Grief

  167. over a loss

  168. is not a sin.

  169. It's a necessity.

  170. To grieve loss

  171. is not a sin.

  172. It is a necessity.

  173. Look at verse 13

  174. again with me.

  175. We don't want you

  176. to be ignorant brothers

  177. concerning those

  178. who have fallen asleep

  179. so you don't grieve

  180. like the rest

  181. who have no hope.

  182. He's implying

  183. that Christians

  184. do grieve

  185. but we grieve

  186. differently.

  187. John Flavel

  188. acknowledged this as well.

  189. To bury a child,

  190. any child,

  191. must needs

  192. rend the heart

  193. of a tender parent.

  194. A child is part

  195. of the parent

  196. made up

  197. in another skin.

  198. To lay a son

  199. in the grave,

  200. a son who would

  201. continue the name

  202. and support the family,

  203. this is a very

  204. great affliction.

  205. How could a Christian

  206. not grieve

  207. great loss?

  208. It's not a sin

  209. to grieve

  210. because Jesus grieved.

  211. In John 11, 33,

  212. we saw this.

  213. Jesus,

  214. as he's approaching

  215. the tomb of Lazarus,

  216. he sees Mary,

  217. Martha,

  218. and the Jews

  219. weeping.

  220. And Jesus,

  221. our sinless God

  222. in the flesh,

  223. he groaned

  224. in the spirit

  225. and he was troubled.

  226. Ecclesiastes 3, 4,

  227. can be paraphrased

  228. as the ancient

  229. Hebrew paraphrase

  230. gave it,

  231. there is

  232. a time

  233. to weep

  234. for those

  235. that sleep.

  236. But God

  237. doesn't waste

  238. the grief.

  239. He uses it.

  240. Flavel pointed out,

  241. God often uses

  242. a person's grief

  243. to get your attention.

  244. God could continue

  245. stripping a person

  246. of all he cares about

  247. until he is finally

  248. willing and ready

  249. to face

  250. his own death

  251. as well.

  252. I know some of you

  253. are grieving.

  254. Some of you

  255. had loss

  256. very recently.

  257. The Lord wants you

  258. to think about

  259. your own life

  260. and yes,

  261. even your own death

  262. because there is

  263. a time for Christians

  264. to grieve

  265. painful loss.

  266. You must grieve

  267. but you must grieve

  268. differently.

  269. Second observation

  270. on verse 13.

  271. Without hope,

  272. your grief

  273. will paralyze you.

  274. Here's why

  275. you must grieve

  276. differently.

  277. To not grieve

  278. differently than the world,

  279. it's devastating.

  280. Hopeless grief

  281. degenerates your nerves.

  282. It numbs your soul.

  283. It holds your mind

  284. hostage.

  285. And grief

  286. can paralyze you.

  287. Have you experienced

  288. something like that?

  289. In verse 13,

  290. Paul writes,

  291. don't grieve

  292. like the rest

  293. who have no hope.

  294. They have no hope

  295. of ever seeing

  296. their friends anymore.

  297. The thought of that friend

  298. must be entirely

  299. lost to them.

  300. They will never meet,

  301. see,

  302. or enjoy

  303. those loved ones

  304. that they lost

  305. outside of Christ.

  306. Christ.

  307. And this would drive

  308. the church

  309. in the ancient world

  310. to extravagant actions.

  311. One commentator said

  312. it would make them

  313. do bizarre things

  314. that we would see

  315. now as culturally

  316. crazy,

  317. you know,

  318. like downright madness,

  319. furious transports.

  320. We get a glimpse

  321. of this also

  322. in the pagan world

  323. in Deuteronomy 14.1.

  324. Part of the civil law

  325. for national Israel

  326. was to not grieve

  327. over the dead

  328. the same way

  329. the pagan nations do.

  330. That verse says

  331. that you are the children

  332. of the Lord your God.

  333. Do not cut yourselves

  334. or shave the front

  335. of your heads

  336. for the dead.

  337. That's what the pagans do.

  338. But you're children of God.

  339. You grieve differently.

  340. Humans can be driven

  341. to those extreme actions

  342. because

  343. death is so real.

  344. No one can deny

  345. the reality of death.

  346. And our conscience

  347. can be pricked

  348. when we see that so close.

  349. That's why the western world

  350. has tried to sanitize death

  351. is because we don't want

  352. to have to deal

  353. with our conscience.

  354. John Flavel wrote

  355. your conscience

  356. is either your best of friends

  357. or your worst of enemies

  358. because it indicates

  359. to your body

  360. in this life

  361. what destiny

  362. you are headed to

  363. for eternity.

  364. So without hope

  365. grief

  366. will paralyze you.

  367. But the third observation

  368. in verse 13

  369. is that

  370. there is

  371. a medicine

  372. for this pain.

  373. The balm

  374. for grief

  375. is truth.

  376. The balm

  377. or ointment

  378. for grief

  379. is truth.

  380. Notice what he says

  381. at the very beginning

  382. of verse 13.

  383. Here's why

  384. we don't want you

  385. to be ignorant.

  386. You need to treat

  387. that burning pain

  388. of grief

  389. with the right

  390. ointment.

  391. The only ointment

  392. that can soothe.

  393. And that's truth

  394. from the word

  395. of God.

  396. Spurgeon said,

  397. Oh, there is

  398. in contemplating Christ

  399. a balm

  400. for every wound.

  401. Well, how do you

  402. get this medicine?

  403. How do you get that?

  404. That's the fourth

  405. observation

  406. on verse 13.

  407. As your soul

  408. receives the truth

  409. from God's word,

  410. it leaves a residual

  411. effect on the pain

  412. and that's hope.

  413. He says,

  414. don't be ignorant

  415. as those who have

  416. no hope.

  417. Instead,

  418. through the truth

  419. of God's word

  420. washing over us,

  421. what we're left with

  422. is a hope

  423. that's different

  424. than what the world

  425. can offer.

  426. So if you

  427. are suffering now

  428. and you are grieving,

  429. you must grieve.

  430. You don't grieve

  431. like the world,

  432. though.

  433. What you do

  434. is you put yourself

  435. like you are now

  436. under God's word.

  437. You let God's word

  438. wash over you

  439. as truth.

  440. The residual effect

  441. as you go home again

  442. after the service,

  443. you will have more hope

  444. than someone

  445. outside of Christ.

  446. Psalm 34,

    Psalms 34:18

  447. verse 18 says

  448. that the Lord

  449. is near

  450. to the brokenhearted

  451. and he saves those

  452. who are crushed

  453. in spirit.

  454. If you are crushed

  455. in spirit,

  456. if you feel like

  457. your heart is broken

  458. and you are grieving,

  459. the Lord is for you

  460. and he is near you.

  461. So Christians

  462. must grieve too.

  463. The second way

  464. that we ought

  465. to comfort one another

  466. in grief

  467. is to remind

  468. one another

  469. of what we believe.

  470. Remind one another

  471. of what we believe.

  472. What is that truth

  473. that gives Christians

  474. hope?

  475. Notice how Paul

  476. gets right to it.

  477. Here is the crux

  478. of the matter.

  479. In verse 14,

  480. he says,

  481. for if we believe

  482. that Jesus died

  483. and rose again.

  484. I want to point out

  485. to you in verse 14

  486. two things.

  487. First,

  488. what the Lord Jesus

  489. secured

  490. and secondly,

  491. for whom he secured

  492. this.

  493. So first,

  494. what did our Lord Jesus

  495. secure?

  496. He secured

  497. eternal life.

  498. He says,

  499. for if we believe

  500. that Jesus died

  501. and rose again,

  502. even so God

  503. will bring with him

  504. those who have

  505. fallen asleep

  506. in Christ.

  507. Your eternal state

  508. and mine,

  509. it hinges on that

  510. one little word,

  511. if.

  512. First John 2.23

  513. says,

  514. no one who denies

  515. the Son

  516. has the Father.

  517. Whoever confesses

  518. the Son

  519. has the Father

  520. also,

  521. you must believe

  522. in Jesus Christ

  523. savingly

  524. to have the hope

  525. of the gospel.

  526. We confess this

  527. with the Apostles' Creed.

  528. We believe

  529. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  530. who for us

  531. and for our salvation

  532. came down

  533. and was made flesh

  534. and entered humanity

  535. and suffered

  536. and rose the third day.

  537. Why did Jesus do this?

  538. To secure eternal life.

  539. He didn't need it.

  540. He secured eternal life

  541. for you

  542. who believe in him.

  543. Octavius Winslow

  544. pointed out,

  545. Christ did this

  546. because he took

  547. your cup of grief,

  548. your cup of the curse,

  549. and he pressed it

  550. to his lips

  551. and he drank it

  552. to the dregs,

  553. every last drop.

  554. Then the Lord Jesus

  555. filled it

  556. with his sweet,

  557. pardoning,

  558. sympathizing love

  559. and he gives it

  560. back to you

  561. to drink

  562. and to drink

  563. forever.

  564. forever.

  565. That's what the Lord

  566. accomplished.

  567. He secured

  568. eternal life

  569. by coming to earth,

  570. dying,

  571. and being risen again.

  572. Now for whom

  573. did he accomplish this?

  574. There's still

  575. the condition,

  576. if you believe.

  577. Even so,

  578. God will bring with him

  579. those who have

  580. fallen asleep.

  581. Notice the next two words.

  582. Those who have

  583. fallen asleep

  584. in Christ Jesus.

  585. There is nothing

  586. more certain

  587. or more comfortable,

  588. one commentator

  589. pointed out,

  590. there's nothing

  591. that we should

  592. more firmly believe

  593. than this.

  594. If you die

  595. in Christ,

  596. you are secure

  597. in Christ

  598. forevermore.

  599. 1 Corinthians 15

    1 Corinthians 15:21

  600. verse 21

  601. gives clarity.

  602. For since death

  603. came by man,

  604. Adam,

  605. the resurrection

  606. of the dead

  607. also comes

  608. by man,

  609. Jesus Christ,

  610. the last Adam.

  611. Jesus Christ

  612. secured

  613. eternal life

  614. for all

  615. who believe

  616. in him

  617. as Lord and Savior.

  618. He secured

  619. this now,

  620. applying it to you

  621. by the Holy Spirit

  622. while you are alive

  623. so that when you die

  624. and go to sleep

  625. in Christ,

  626. you can know

  627. forever

  628. your soul

  629. is in him.

  630. You are united

  631. from him

  632. that will never

  633. be undone.

  634. how can this

  635. truth be balm?

  636. How can this

  637. give us hope

  638. and comfort

  639. and how can it

  640. be medicine

  641. for our suffering

  642. soul?

  643. John Flavel

  644. preached a sermon

  645. and the title

  646. of the sermon

  647. I think answers

  648. that question.

  649. It was a funeral

  650. sermon entitled

  651. The Balm

  652. of the Covenant.

  653. That's the covenant

  654. of grace

  655. applied to the

  656. bleeding wounds

  657. of afflicted

  658. saints.

  659. And in this sermon

  660. he tells the

  661. widow

  662. who lost

  663. her husband

  664. this is a

  665. sovereign balm

  666. the blessing

  667. of the Holy Spirit

  668. on you

  669. for your wounded

  670. spirit

  671. who are groaning

  672. under the strokes

  673. of God.

  674. Here's the promise

  675. that same moment

  676. that your soul

  677. came to Jesus

  678. in faith

  679. had passed

  680. from death

  681. to life

  682. that soul

  683. is no longer

  684. under the law

  685. condemning unto death

  686. but it's under

  687. the grace

  688. that Christ

  689. secured forever.

  690. So you and I

  691. have the opportunity

  692. every time we

  693. think about our death

  694. every time we think

  695. about resting

  696. in Christ

  697. we have the chance

  698. to prepare

  699. for that eternal

  700. state

  701. what comes after

  702. this life.

  703. Did you notice

  704. how the apostle

  705. Paul calls

  706. death

  707. falling asleep

  708. if you're in Christ?

  709. If you're in Christ

  710. to die

  711. is simply

  712. to fall

  713. asleep.

  714. Every night

  715. that we lay

  716. our heads down

  717. on the pillow

  718. we are practicing

  719. for our death.

  720. We fall asleep

  721. in Christ

  722. we trust

  723. that he will bring

  724. his own

  725. back to life

  726. with him.

  727. John Gill

  728. pointed out

  729. what do death

  730. and falling asleep

  731. have in common?

  732. In both death

  733. and sleep

  734. there is no

  735. exercise of the senses

  736. the persons

  737. are at rest

  738. and both

  739. rise again.

  740. Both death

  741. and sleep

  742. are common

  743. to all men

  744. and they are

  745. proper

  746. and peculiar

  747. to the body

  748. only.

  749. That's why

  750. you can have

  751. a dream

  752. while your body

  753. sleeps.

  754. It's a wonderful

  755. analogy

  756. that the Lord

  757. has given us

  758. and even wiring us

  759. and he makes you

  760. sleep

  761. not just once a month

  762. he makes you sleep

  763. every day

  764. learning to rest

  765. in him

  766. practicing for your own

  767. death one day.

  768. Well let's remind

  769. ourselves next

  770. this is our third way

  771. to comfort one another

  772. remind one another

  773. by the word

  774. of the Lord

  775. how it all

  776. ends.

  777. So having said

  778. that there's only hope

  779. for those in Christ

  780. he reminds us

  781. next of how

  782. this all ends

  783. and this is another

  784. way that we comfort

  785. one another.

  786. Look at verse 15

  787. for we tell you

  788. by the word

  789. of the Lord

  790. that we who are

  791. alive

  792. who are left

  793. until the coming

  794. of the Lord

  795. will in no way

  796. precede those

  797. who have fallen

  798. asleep.

  799. He says that

  800. if you're in Christ

  801. now and you're

  802. still alive

  803. this is how

  804. it's going to end

  805. for you

  806. and what about

  807. those who are

  808. already dead

  809. when Christ returns?

  810. Well this is how

  811. it will end

  812. for them.

  813. Verse 16

  814. the Lord himself

  815. will descend

  816. from heaven

  817. with a shout

  818. with the voice

  819. of the archangel

  820. and with God's

  821. trumpet.

  822. This is imagery

  823. of war.

  824. it's a cry

  825. of command

  826. coming from

  827. heaven

  828. with the Lord

  829. Jesus Christ

  830. in his glorified

  831. body

  832. descending

  833. coming to take

  834. what's his

  835. which is the

  836. whole world

  837. as the supreme

  838. authority

  839. and it's a command

  840. to all his

  841. soldiers

  842. living and

  843. dead

  844. and the voice

  845. of the archangel

  846. that's the general

  847. of the angelic

  848. army

  849. and with the

  850. sound

  851. of the trumpet

  852. this is imagery

  853. of a Jewish

  854. shofar

  855. which was the

  856. trumpet made

  857. out of a ram's

  858. horn

  859. that was used

  860. when the

  861. walls of Jericho

  862. come tumbling

  863. down

  864. and the first

  865. Yeshua

  866. is calling the

  867. people to take

  868. the land

  869. Jesus Christ

  870. will be coming

  871. back leading

  872. the army

  873. taking the land

  874. taking the whole

  875. world

  876. that is his

  877. own

  878. this is how

  879. it all

  880. ends

  881. in Luke 12

    Luke 12:49

  882. verse 49

  883. Jesus said

  884. in his own

  885. words

  886. I came

  887. to throw

  888. fire on the

  889. earth

  890. and I wish

  891. it were

  892. already

  893. kindled

  894. the Lord

  895. Jesus

  896. with the

  897. gospel

  898. in his

  899. first coming

  900. is gracious

  901. he's inaugurating

  902. the kingdom

  903. of heaven

  904. on earth

  905. and this

  906. fire will

  907. spread

  908. throughout

  909. the world

  910. it's the

  911. fire of

  912. the gospel

  913. it's the

  914. image of

  915. the Holy

  916. Spirit

  917. hovering over

  918. the church

  919. as they

  920. gather in

  921. his name

  922. until every

  923. one of the

  924. nations

  925. peoples and

  926. tribes are

  927. gathered

  928. under

  929. Jesus

  930. their

  931. king

  932. and as

  933. one

  934. generation

  935. passes

  936. and their

  937. bodies

  938. are buried

  939. they're being

  940. prepared for

  941. that great

  942. day

  943. when the

  944. fire

  945. of the

  946. heavenly

  947. kingdom

  948. will consume

  949. the whole

  950. earth

  951. the new

  952. heavens

  953. and the

  954. new

  955. earth

  956. are brought

  957. down

  958. by the

  959. Lord

  960. Jesus

  961. himself

  962. with the

  963. host of

  964. the angels

  965. armies

  966. with all

  967. of those

  968. who had

  969. died in

  970. Christ

  971. being risen

  972. and all

  973. those who

  974. are still

  975. living

  976. when he

  977. returns

  978. being

  979. transformed

  980. and brought

  981. with him

  982. this is how

  983. it all

  984. ends

  985. this should

  986. comfort

  987. us who

  988. mourn

  989. now

  990. Jesus

  991. ascended

  992. into heaven

  993. we read

  994. in our

  995. creed

  996. he is

  997. seated

  998. at the

  999. father's

  1000. right hand

  1001. and he

  1002. will come

  1003. again

  1004. to judge

  1005. the living

  1006. and the

  1007. dead

  1008. his first

  1009. coming

  1010. was gracious

  1011. calling all

  1012. to repent

  1013. and his

  1014. second

  1015. coming

  1016. is a

  1017. time for

  1018. his

  1019. kingdom

  1020. to be

  1021. here

  1022. constantly

  1023. where every

  1024. knee

  1025. will bow

  1026. to king

  1027. Jesus

  1028. one way

  1029. or the

  1030. other

  1031. remind one

  1032. another

  1033. by the

  1034. word of

  1035. God

  1036. how this

  1037. all ends

  1038. the fourth

  1039. way we

  1040. comfort one

  1041. another is

  1042. we think

  1043. of him

  1044. with whom

  1045. all believers

  1046. will be

  1047. think

  1048. of him

  1049. with whom

  1050. all believers

  1051. will be

  1052. verse 16

  1053. we read

  1054. that the

  1055. dead

  1056. in Christ

  1057. will rise

  1058. first

  1059. there are

  1060. Christians

  1061. who have

  1062. been tossed

  1063. over ships

  1064. there are

  1065. Christians

  1066. who have

  1067. been burned

  1068. alive at

  1069. the stake

  1070. their bodies

  1071. were consumed

  1072. by the fire

  1073. there are others

  1074. who have been

  1075. buried in the

  1076. dirt

  1077. and turned

  1078. to dust

  1079. their bodies

  1080. have been

  1081. eaten up

  1082. by worms

  1083. the Lord

  1084. Jesus says

  1085. that when

  1086. he comes

  1087. those who

  1088. died in

  1089. him

  1090. will rise

  1091. the one

  1092. who created

  1093. you

  1094. who formed

  1095. you and

  1096. me

  1097. and this

  1098. whole world

  1099. out of

  1100. nothing

  1101. he will

  1102. recreate

  1103. each one

  1104. of us

  1105. he will

  1106. join

  1107. body

  1108. to soul

  1109. that's the

  1110. only way

  1111. we can be

  1112. with him

  1113. the Lord

  1114. Jesus

  1115. died

  1116. and his

  1117. own body

  1118. was resurrected

  1119. and his

  1120. own body

  1121. ascended

  1122. to the

  1123. right hand

  1124. of the

  1125. father

  1126. this mystery

  1127. is explained

  1128. at least

  1129. as much as

  1130. God wants us

  1131. to know

  1132. for now

  1133. in 1

  1134. Corinthians

  1135. 15

  1136. 42

  1137. notice how

  1138. Paul explains

  1139. this

  1140. you're welcome

  1141. to turn

  1142. there

  1143. I'll read

  1144. it for

  1145. us

  1146. 1

  1147. Corinthians

  1148. 15

  1149. starting

  1150. at 42

  1151. the body

  1152. is sown

  1153. perishable

  1154. it's the

  1155. image of

  1156. our body

  1157. once the

  1158. soul has

  1159. left it

  1160. being put

  1161. into the

  1162. earth

  1163. into the

  1164. dirt

  1165. perishable

  1166. but it

  1167. is raised

  1168. imperishable

  1169. the body

  1170. God will

  1171. raise to

  1172. life

  1173. when he

  1174. comes again

  1175. will not

  1176. perish

  1177. it is

  1178. sown

  1179. in

  1180. dishonor

  1181. a funeral

  1182. is a picture

  1183. of what

  1184. our sin

  1185. deserves

  1186. it's the

  1187. curse

  1188. that we're

  1189. under

  1190. that we've

  1191. piled onto

  1192. with our

  1193. own sinning

  1194. but that

  1195. same body

  1196. because it's

  1197. united to

  1198. Christ

  1199. by his

  1200. work

  1201. will be

  1202. raised

  1203. in glory

  1204. the body

  1205. is sown

  1206. in weakness

  1207. but it

  1208. will be

  1209. raised

  1210. in power

  1211. so if

  1212. you die

  1213. in Christ

  1214. your soul

  1215. will be

  1216. separated

  1217. from your

  1218. body

  1219. until the

  1220. second coming

  1221. of Christ

  1222. but you

  1223. can look

  1224. forward to

  1225. that day

  1226. that great

  1227. reunion

  1228. your body

  1229. will be

  1230. transformed

  1231. so that

  1232. you can

  1233. be with

  1234. the Lord

  1235. body

  1236. and soul

  1237. and what

  1238. about those

  1239. who are

  1240. still alive

  1241. when Christ

  1242. returns

  1243. we read

  1244. in verse

  1245. 17 of

  1246. our sermon

  1247. text

  1248. then we

  1249. who are

  1250. alive

  1251. who are

  1252. left

  1253. will be

  1254. caught up

  1255. together

  1256. with them

  1257. in the

  1258. clouds

  1259. to meet

  1260. the Lord

  1261. in the

  1262. air

  1263. the phrase

  1264. in the

  1265. air

  1266. is used

  1267. throughout

  1268. the Bible

  1269. and the

  1270. Old Testament

  1271. as not

  1272. the seventh

  1273. heaven

  1274. or the

  1275. highest

  1276. of heaven

  1277. but that

  1278. place

  1279. between

  1280. heaven

  1281. and earth

  1282. it's the

  1283. mediating

  1284. presence

  1285. of Christ

  1286. in the

  1287. air

  1288. it means

  1289. the

  1290. presence

  1291. of the

  1292. Lord

  1293. where he's

  1294. bringing

  1295. heaven

  1296. and earth

  1297. together

  1298. and there's

  1299. going to be

  1300. a great

  1301. reunion

  1302. of all

  1303. those

  1304. who

  1305. died

  1306. in

  1307. Christ

  1308. and all

  1309. those

  1310. who are

  1311. now

  1312. still

  1313. living

  1314. in

  1315. Christ

  1316. 1 Corinthians

  1317. 15

  1318. 51

  1319. says

  1320. behold

  1321. I tell

  1322. you

  1323. a mystery

  1324. we will

  1325. not all

  1326. sleep

  1327. but we

  1328. will

  1329. all

  1330. be

  1331. changed

  1332. in a

  1333. moment

  1334. in the

  1335. twinkling

  1336. of an

  1337. eye

  1338. the last

  1339. trumpet

  1340. will

  1341. sound

  1342. the dead

  1343. will be

  1344. raised

  1345. incorruptible

  1346. and we

  1347. will be

  1348. changed

  1349. this perishable

  1350. body must

  1351. become

  1352. imperishable

  1353. and this

  1354. mortal body

  1355. must put on

  1356. immortality

  1357. the Lord

  1358. will transform

  1359. all of us

  1360. those who

  1361. died in

  1362. him

  1363. those who

  1364. are still

  1365. living in

  1366. him

  1367. at his

  1368. second

  1369. coming

  1370. the reason

  1371. he will

  1372. transform

  1373. our bodies

  1374. is so that

  1375. we can be

  1376. with him

  1377. in his

  1378. glory

  1379. John

  1380. Flavel

  1381. explained this

  1382. mystery this

  1383. way

  1384. your body

  1385. must be

  1386. refined

  1387. it must be

  1388. cast into

  1389. a new

  1390. mold

  1391. or else

  1392. that new

  1393. wine

  1394. of heavenly

  1395. glory

  1396. would break

  1397. it is not

  1398. union with

  1399. Christ

  1400. infinitely more

  1401. desirable

  1402. than union

  1403. of your soul

  1404. with this

  1405. body

  1406. oh cherish

  1407. your union

  1408. with him

  1409. then shall

  1410. your souls

  1411. be happy

  1412. when your

  1413. bodies drop

  1414. off from

  1415. them at

  1416. death

  1417. and what's

  1418. more

  1419. your soul

  1420. and your

  1421. body

  1422. shall be

  1423. happy in

  1424. him

  1425. in that

  1426. great

  1427. resurrection

  1428. at the

  1429. second

  1430. and final

  1431. coming

  1432. of our

  1433. Lord

  1434. look at

  1435. verse 17

  1436. think of

  1437. him

  1438. with whom

  1439. all believers

  1440. will be

  1441. verse 17

  1442. we have

  1443. this glorious

  1444. promise

  1445. in this

  1446. way

  1447. so

  1448. we

  1449. will be

  1450. with

  1451. the

  1452. Lord

  1453. forever

  1454. we

  1455. will be

  1456. with

  1457. the

  1458. Lord

  1459. forever

  1460. Romans

  1461. 6 5

  1462. says

  1463. if we

  1464. have

  1465. become

  1466. united

  1467. with him

  1468. in the

  1469. likeness

  1470. of his

  1471. death

  1472. we

  1473. also

  1474. will be

  1475. part

  1476. of his

  1477. resurrection

  1478. that's

  1479. how we

  1480. will be

  1481. with the

  1482. Lord

  1483. forever

  1484. we're

  1485. with the

  1486. Lord

  1487. now

  1488. spiritually

  1489. one day

  1490. we will

  1491. be with

  1492. the

  1493. Lord

  1494. body

  1495. and soul

  1496. the new

  1497. heavens

  1498. the new

  1499. earth

  1500. forever

  1501. forever

  1502. whatever

  1503. what

  1504. greater

  1505. comfort

  1506. could

  1507. a person

  1508. ask

  1509. for

  1510. this

  1511. is the

  1512. high

  1513. part

  1514. of our

  1515. passage

  1516. it's

  1517. the

  1518. Lord

  1519. Jesus

  1520. himself

  1521. your

  1522. savior

  1523. your

  1524. creator

  1525. your

  1526. good

  1527. shepherd

  1528. you are

  1529. with

  1530. him

  1531. for all

  1532. eternity

  1533. but that's

  1534. not where

  1535. he ends

  1536. this thought

  1537. because you

  1538. and I are

  1539. still here

  1540. in the

  1541. church

  1542. we're still

  1543. in this

  1544. life

  1545. in these

  1546. bodies

  1547. and we

  1548. long for

  1549. that day

  1550. that we'll

  1551. be with

  1552. our

  1553. Lord

  1554. forever

  1555. but now

  1556. what do we

  1557. do while

  1558. we grieve

  1559. while our

  1560. flesh is

  1561. weak

  1562. and he

  1563. ends with

  1564. verse 18

  1565. comfort

  1566. one another

  1567. with these

  1568. words

  1569. comfort

  1570. one another

  1571. to

  1572. comfort

  1573. is to

  1574. lessen a

  1575. friend's

  1576. sadness

  1577. or sorrow

  1578. it's to

  1579. minister

  1580. comfort

  1581. to give

  1582. someone a

  1583. pleasant

  1584. feeling

  1585. or being

  1586. relaxed

  1587. more free

  1588. from pain

  1589. it's to

  1590. restore

  1591. a cheerful

  1592. outlook

  1593. to strengthen

  1594. by inspiring

  1595. them with

  1596. hope

  1597. and how

  1598. is it

  1599. that the

  1600. Lord

  1601. does this

  1602. well he

  1603. does it

  1604. through the

  1605. church

  1606. we are

  1607. part of

  1608. ministering

  1609. such

  1610. comfort

  1611. to one

  1612. another

  1613. and how

  1614. do we

  1615. comfort

  1616. one another

  1617. with

  1618. these

  1619. words

  1620. if it's

  1621. man's

  1622. words to

  1623. one another

  1624. it brings

  1625. no hope

  1626. but from

  1627. God

  1628. who alone

  1629. has the

  1630. words of

  1631. eternal

  1632. life

  1633. through

  1634. his

  1635. people

  1636. the

  1637. church

  1638. there

  1639. is

  1640. great

  1641. comfort

  1642. Jesus

  1643. said in

  1644. Mark 13

    Mark 13:31

  1645. verse 31

  1646. heaven and

  1647. earth will

  1648. pass away

  1649. but my

  1650. words shall

  1651. never pass

  1652. away

  1653. we take the

  1654. word of God

  1655. that shall not

  1656. pass away

  1657. and we

  1658. minister God's

  1659. word to

  1660. one another

  1661. the Holy

  1662. Spirit takes

  1663. our humble

  1664. attempts at

  1665. comforting one

  1666. another from

  1667. God's word

  1668. and he

  1669. blesses

  1670. that

  1671. Psalm 55

    Psalms 55:22

  1672. verse 22

  1673. says cast

  1674. your burden

  1675. on the

  1676. Lord and

  1677. he will

  1678. sustain

  1679. you

  1680. he will

  1681. never

  1682. permit the

  1683. righteous

  1684. to be

  1685. moved

  1686. comfort one

  1687. another with

  1688. these words

  1689. we all need

  1690. comfort from

  1691. one another

  1692. we come to

  1693. the church

  1694. we want to

  1695. hear from

  1696. God and

  1697. God ministers

  1698. and he

  1699. speaks to

  1700. the church

  1701. through the

  1702. church

  1703. hasn't that

  1704. been true in

  1705. your experience

  1706. you're so

  1707. blessed every

  1708. time you

  1709. leave and

  1710. you just

  1711. never know

  1712. where the

  1713. Lord's gonna

  1714. minister to

  1715. you but it

  1716. happens as

  1717. you're setting

  1718. up an element

  1719. of the service

  1720. in the meal

  1721. just passing in

  1722. the hallway

  1723. we listen to

  1724. one another

  1725. we minister

  1726. to one another

  1727. just as we

  1728. prepare for

  1729. death as a

  1730. discipline now

  1731. we also need

  1732. to be prepared

  1733. for persecution

  1734. and for more

  1735. serious grieving

  1736. within this body

  1737. we need to be

  1738. equipped to

  1739. minister and to

  1740. comfort within

  1741. this body

  1742. we don't know

  1743. what the Lord

  1744. will bring

  1745. I'm reminded

  1746. every time I

  1747. read of another

  1748. part of the

  1749. world or another

  1750. time in Christian

  1751. history how much

  1752. persecution little

  1753. churches like ours

  1754. seeking to be

  1755. faithful to God's

  1756. word have

  1757. endured

  1758. one last example

  1759. from John

  1760. Flavel's life

  1761. during the

  1762. the reign in

  1763. England when it

  1764. was prohibited to

  1765. minister from

  1766. God's word to

  1767. one another

1768. you had to use a

  1769. book of common

  1770. prayer and be

  1771. regulated by the

  1772. government

  1773. pastors like

  1774. John Flavel

  1775. spent time in

  1776. prison then

  1777. there was a

  1778. five mile act

  1779. where they had

  1780. to be five miles

  1781. away from the

  1782. village where

  1783. there was an

  1784. official parish

  1785. because it was

  1786. outlawed to

  1787. minister God's

  1788. word to comfort

  1789. one another

  1790. and John Flavel

  1791. was not popular

  1792. his opponents

  1793. made an effigy

  1794. of him and

  1795. burned it as a

  1796. protest against

  1797. puritanism and

  1798. the free ministry

  1799. of the word

  1800. on another

  1801. occasion his

  1802. congregation would

  1803. meet him in a

  1804. field just to

  1805. minister the word

  1806. of the Lord to

  1807. one another and

  1808. worship with

  1809. freedom of

  1810. conscience

  1811. there the city

  1812. of darts is on

  1813. the mouth of

  1814. the ocean and

  1815. these rivers bring

  1816. that salty water

  1817. in and so there

  1818. was one island

  1819. called the

  1820. south stone rock

  1821. and this is an

  1822. estuary in

  1823. England and here

  1824. the sailors would

  1825. come and they

  1826. would they would

  1827. put their ships

  1828. and they would

  1829. march out and the

  1830. people from the

  1831. village would

  1832. join while the

  1833. tide would blow

  1834. they would take

  1835. their little boats

  1836. onto this rock

  1837. and they would

  1838. hold a worship

  1839. service where they

  1840. couldn't be

  1841. persecuted and

  1842. then as the tide

  1843. would rise that

  1844. same little island

  1845. would get buried

  1846. by the water

  1847. John Flavel took

  1848. the truth of the

  1849. gospel and he put

  1850. it as a question

  1851. and answer for

  1852. these simple

  1853. sailors it was

  1854. called a catechism

  1855. for sailors and

  1856. listen to his

  1857. words on death

  1858. ministering this

  1859. comfort to men

  1860. like that

  1861. to die is to

  1862. pass through a

  1863. raging maritime

  1864. tempest that

  1865. strips the ship

  1866. of its worldly

  1867. cargo and though

  1868. all earthly things

  1869. fail at death

  1870. yet neither the

  1871. soul nor its

  1872. well-grounded

  1873. hopes can fail

  1874. the anchor of a

  1875. believer's hope

  1876. is firm and

  1877. sure amen

  1878. Jesus Christ is

  1879. the anchor of

  1880. every believer

  1881. well Satan wants

  1882. to attack you in

  1883. your grief

  1884. he wants to

  1885. accuse God to

  1886. you in your

  1887. grief as you

  1888. suffer loss you

  1889. can feel empty

  1890. bruised deserted

  1891. and spiritually

  1892. parched and

  1893. Jesus says to

  1894. you you who

  1895. mourn in him

  1896. are blessed

  1897. Matthew 5

  1898. 4 how can a

  1899. person mourning

  1900. be blessed

  1901. Jesus says

  1902. because you

  1903. shall be

  1904. comforted

  1905. Christ comforts

  1906. you in your

  1907. grief he

  1908. fills you who

  1909. are empty

  1910. he brings water

  1911. to you who are

  1912. in a desert

  1913. I love how

  1914. John Newton

  1915. the same pastor

  1916. who composed the

  1917. lyrics to amazing

  1918. grace he put it

  1919. this way in a

  1920. poem see the

  1921. streams of living

  1922. water springing

  1923. from eternal

  1924. love well supply

  1925. thy sons and

  1926. daughters and

  1927. all fear of

  1928. want remove

  1929. who can faint

  1930. while such a

  1931. river ever flows

  1932. their thirst to

  1933. assuage grace

  1934. which like the

  1935. Lord the giver

  1936. never fails from

  1937. age to age

  1938. so church

  1939. comfort one

  1940. another with

  1941. this all you

  1942. who are in

  1943. our Lord Jesus

  1944. Christ all your

  1945. loved ones who

  1946. die in our

  1947. Lord Jesus

  1948. Christ and

  1949. the whole

  1950. church who

  1951. is united in

  1952. the Lord Jesus

  1953. Christ from

  1954. all generations

  1955. all peoples

  1956. nations tribes

  1957. and tongues will

  1958. be with the

  1959. Lord forever

  1960. comfort one

  1961. another in this

  1962. truth let's

  1963. pray

  1964. Lord now we

  1965. receive your

  1966. truth by

  1967. faith

  1968. we believe

  1969. help our

  1970. unbelief

  1971. we do pray

  1972. Lord for those

  1973. who are still

  1974. grieving

  1975. those who have

  1976. suffered great

  1977. loss

  1978. we pray that

  1979. the truth

  1980. that we are

  1981. secure in

  1982. Jesus Christ

  1983. and that the

  1984. anchor of our

  1985. hope will not

  1986. fail we pray

  1987. that that truth

  1988. once again today

  1989. Lord will stir

  1990. up in our

  1991. hearts a hope

  1992. in you for

  1993. your glory we

  1994. ask amen
