  1. It is an honor to be with you all here this morning to fill in for Jason,

  2. and hopefully I can do half as well as we look at God's word this morning.

  3. Psalm 139, to the choir master, a psalm of David.

  4. O Lord, you have searched me and known me.

  5. You know when I sit down and when I rise up.

  6. You discern my thoughts from afar.

  7. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.

  8. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it all together.

  9. You hem me in behind and before and lay your hand upon me.

  10. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me.

  11. It is high.

  12. I cannot attain it.

  13. Where shall I go from your spirit?

  14. Or where shall I flee from your presence?

  15. If I ascend to heaven, you are there.

  16. If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.

  17. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

  18. even there your hand shall lead me and your right hand shall hold me.

  19. If I say, surely the darkness shall cover me and the light about me be night.

  20. Even the darkness is not dark to you.

  21. The night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.

  22. For you formed my inward parts.

  23. You knitted me together in my mother's womb.

  24. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

  25. Wonderful are your works.

  26. My soul knows it very well.

  27. My frame was not hidden from you.

  28. When I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth,

  29. your eyes saw my unformed substance.

  30. In your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me,

  31. when as yet there were none of them.

  32. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!

  33. How vast is the sum of them!

  34. If I could count them, there are more than the sand.

  35. I awake, and I am still with you.

  36. Oh, that you would slay the wicked, O God!

  37. O men of blood, depart from me!

  38. They speak against you with malicious intent.

  39. Your enemies take your name in vain.

  40. Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?

  41. And do I not loathe those who rise up against you?

  42. I hate them with complete hatred.

  43. I count them my enemies.

  44. Search me, O God, and know my heart.

  45. Try me and know my thoughts.

  46. See if there be any grievous way in me,

  47. and lead me in the way everlasting.

  48. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the God is everlasting.

  49. You may be seated.

  50. My note, my bookmarks are falling out.

  51. There we go.

  52. A.W. Tozer, in his book, The Knowledge of the Holy, begins his book this way.

  53. What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.

  54. For this reason, the gravest question before the church is always God himself.

  55. And the most portentous or important fact of any man is not necessarily what at any given time he may say or do,

  56. but what deep in his heart he conceives God to be like.

  57. We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God.

  58. So in other words, if I can paraphrase, our conception or our understanding of who God is

  59. will help to orient us in our daily walk,

  60. in how we worship,

  61. the direction of our families,

  62. and ultimately the direction of our church.

  63. So this morning, as we begin,

  64. how would you describe God?

  65. What's some of the first things to come to mind when you think of who God is?

  66. Is he loving?

  67. Merciful?

  68. Powerful?

  69. Maybe he's limited.

  70. Maybe he's angry.

  71. He's unfair.

  72. Is God intimate and personal to you today?

  73. This morning?

  74. Have you built trust with God?

  75. Have you built a relationship with him?

  76. Or perhaps where you are right now, he is distant.

  77. Maybe impersonal.

  78. Maybe he's a philosophical, abstract idea.

  79. Something you haven't grasped personally yet.

  80. Maybe most importantly is your description and understanding of who God is

  81. biblical and accurate.

  82. Well, wherever you are this morning,

  83. as we look at Psalm 139,

  84. I want each and every one of you to be able to walk out of here

  85. with a right understanding of who God is.

  86. If our conception of God is the most important thing about us,

  87. then I think it behooves us

  88. to ensure that we have a right understanding of God,

  89. to dive into the scriptures,

  90. to look at it.

  91. If you're here this morning,

  92. and maybe you don't even agree with the premise of what I just read,

  93. well then let me, hopefully this next 30 minutes,

  94. will help to persuade you

  95. that you really need to think about who God is.

  96. By seeing who God is,

  97. we must strive to align our perspective and our conception,

  98. lest we violate the second commandment,

  99. and we create an image of God

  100. in our own making.

  101. So Holy Spirit,

  102. I ask that you will

  103. open our eyes,

  104. our minds,

  105. our hearts,

  106. that we may have the same understanding of God

  107. that David the psalmist has.

  108. Before we begin and dive in,

  109. let us go before God in prayer.

  110. Oh God,

  111. your word is more precious than fine gold

  112. and sweeter than purest honey.

  113. As we turn to look to your scripture,

  114. send your Holy Spirit to infuse your word with truth and grace,

  115. so the good news of your personal love and care and provision

  116. would shine before us this morning

  117. and delight our senses,

  118. so that we cannot help but to respond with wonder,

  119. worship,

  120. faith,

  121. and trust.

  122. Lord,

  123. help me now to proclaim your truth

  124. so that we may know you better.

  125. In Christ's holy name,

  126. Amen.

  127. As we look at the scripture,

  128. as we look at Psalm 139,

  129. depending on how your Bible breaks it out,

  130. you may see that there are essentially four stanzas.

  131. Verses 1 through 6,

  132. 7 through 12,

  133. 13 through 18,

  134. and 19 through 24.

  135. Each of these stanzas are made up of the first four verses.

  136. David provides a theme for us.

  137. And then the last two verses of each stanza

  138. are a little couplet

  139. that emphasize or reinvigorate that theme.

  140. If you are here this morning taking notes,

  141. I have a little line or term for each of these stanzas.

  142. They all begin with the sound N,

  143. but as my young daughter is learning,

  144. not every word that starts with an N starts with an N.

  145. Sometimes we're going to start with a K.

  146. So the first stanza is God knows you.

  147. That's the one that starts with a K.

  148. The second stanza is God is near you.

  149. The third stanza,

  150. God knit you.

  151. God created you.

  152. And the fourth stanza,

  153. God is the nemesis of the wicked.

  154. Not a common word,

  155. but I'll explain that one as we get there.

  156. Join me and look with me there at the first stanza.

  157. God knows you.

  158. Oh Lord, you have searched me and known me.

  159. When I go to Google

  160. and I'm searching for something on the internet,

  161. it's not because I know what it is

  162. before I search for it, right?

  163. But this is not the idea of God searching us

  164. as if God does not know something about us.

  165. This term here is used for a thorough examination.

  166. God is examining us,

  167. is searching us intimately and deeply.

  168. And the idea of knowing here

  169. is knowing us at an intimate,

  170. deep, personal level.

  171. The word for Lord here is Yahweh,

  172. Almighty God, Lord of hosts,

  173. the Almighty Creator God knows you.

  174. What an amazing and sobering thought.

  175. And then David goes on to describe

  176. some of the ways that God knows us.

  177. Verse two, you know when I sit down

  178. and when I rise up.

  179. God knows everything the psalmist does.

  180. Whether resting,

  181. watching TV,

  182. reading a book,

  183. working,

  184. exercising,

  185. using your phone,

  186. eating a meal.

  187. God knows what you are doing.

  188. He discerns his thoughts from afar.

  189. Before we take any actions,

  190. God knows our invisible thoughts.

  191. And not just your thoughts,

  192. but the motivations for the actions you have.

  193. These are thoughts that flitter through our mind

  194. and are gone again.

  195. Sometimes these are embarrassing thoughts

  196. as we think about what God has seen in our minds.

  197. These are the deep,

  198. heartful longings and desires

  199. upon which we dwell

  200. and mull over

  201. our heart longs for.

  202. Nothing is hidden from God.

  203. Verse three,

  204. you search out my path

  205. and my lying down

  206. and are acquainted with all of my ways.

  207. The concept of path here

  208. has to do with the public areas.

  209. When we go out to the store,

  210. we're at work,

  211. God knows.

  212. The idea of lying down

  213. is privacy

  214. and the privacy of your own home.

  215. The four walls of your house

  216. do not block God's view

  217. from what is happening

  218. inside of your house.

  219. There is nowhere we can go

  220. that God does not know about.

  221. Now one thing that David

  222. did not have to deal with

  223. is smartphones or computers.

  224. But God knows where you go digitally

  225. just as much as physically.

  226. The Lord is intimately acquainted

  227. with all of our ways.

  228. Look at verse four,

  229. even before a word is on my tongue,

  230. behold, O Lord,

  231. you know it all together.

  232. The Lord knows what you're going to say

  233. before you even say it.

  234. And then the negative phrasing here

  235. that David uses

  236. is a poetic way

  237. of noting the emphasis.

  238. Even before a word is on my tongue.

  239. The Lord knows what I'm going to say

  240. in five minutes,

  241. even though I don't know exactly

  242. what I'm going to say yet.

  243. Hopefully based on my notes,

  244. I have a semblance of any idea

  245. of what I'm going to say.

  246. But I don't know what I'm going to say

  247. in five minutes.

  248. The Lord knows perfectly

  249. what will come out of my mouth.

  250. Though we might try to conceal

  251. what we're thinking

  252. from other people,

  253. God knows.

  254. And the totality

  255. and the completeness

  256. is emphasized

  257. in that final word

  258. of verse four,

  259. all together.

  260. You and I cannot deceive God.

  261. God knows who I am.

  262. God knows who you are.

  263. God knows who you are.

  264. To emphasize this,

  265. David in verse five continues,

  266. you hem me in

  267. behind and before

  268. and you lay your hand upon me.

  269. This idea of hemming in

  270. is to surround us.

  271. You and I cannot escape

  272. God's knowledge of us.

  273. He is behind us,

  274. scouting out before us.

  275. He's flanking on our left,

  276. guiding us on the right.

  277. Nothing is going to get past

  278. God to us

  279. without his knowledge.

  280. And under his watch,

  281. there is nothing

  282. we can ever do

  283. to outmaneuver

  284. or outsmart

  285. our Heavenly Father.

  286. Remember Jonah?

  287. What did Jonah try to do?

  288. He ran away

  289. from God's instruction

  290. to go and preach

  291. at Nineveh.

  292. He tried to go

  293. the direct opposite direction.

  294. Was there a point

  295. where God didn't know

  296. where Jonah was?

  297. No, of course not.

  298. God knew where Jonah was

  299. the entire time.

  300. He sent the storm

  301. to remind Jonah.

  302. And as they threw Jonah overboard

  303. in the midst of the sea,

  304. God provided a fish

  305. to swallow Jonah up

  306. to save him from drowning.

  307. It was the first recorded

  308. prayer meeting

  309. under the sea.

  310. The Lord's hand

  311. was there with Jonah

  312. to preserve

  313. and to protect

  314. and to guide

  315. despite Jonah's

  316. direct rebellion

  317. and disobedience.

  318. Similarly,

  319. the hand of God

  320. here in Psalm 139

  321. is not a hand

  322. of oppression.

  323. It's a hand

  324. of care,

  325. of guidance,

  326. of provision

  327. and protection.

  328. I'm reminded

  329. of Jesus'

  330. reassurance.

  331. my father

  332. is greater

  333. than all

  334. and no one

  335. is able

  336. to snatch

  337. a single one

  338. of my sheep

  339. that hear

  340. the shepherd's voice

  341. out of my father's hands.

  342. John 10.

  343. There is no

  344. safer place

  345. to be

  346. than in the hands

  347. of the son

  348. and of almighty God.

  349. Now,

  350. before we look

  351. at verse 6,

  352. I want you to look down

  353. in your Bible

  354. and count

  355. the number

  356. of times

  357. that the words

  358. I and my

  359. are used

  360. while I get

  361. a sip of water.

  362. Would you have

  363. the number?

  364. Go ahead

  365. and shout it out.

  366. Go ahead.

  367. You have a number?

  368. Go ahead.

  369. I'm going to make

  370. this a little bit

  371. interactive.

  372. I don't know

  373. if Jason ever

  374. do this.

  375. How many

  376. I's and my's

  377. there,

  378. depending on

  379. your version

  380. of scripture

  381. there?

  382. I'm sorry,

  383. yeah,

  384. for verses

  385. 1 through 5.

  386. 1 through 5.

  387. I should have

  388. been more

  389. explicit.

  390. 8?

  391. Somebody's got

  392. 8?

  393. Anybody else

  394. have a different

  395. number?

  396. I've got 11

  397. in my version

  398. of the ESV.

  399. I know,

  400. I have an older

  401. version of the ESV.

  402. 11 times

  403. in those first

  404. 5 verses,

  405. David uses

  406. the term

  407. my or I.

  408. What's the point

  409. of pointing this out?

  410. Couldn't David,

  411. the psalmist,

  412. have just said

  413. God knows

  414. everything?

  415. God is

  416. omniscient?

  417. He would have

  418. been correct,

  419. right?

  420. If he had just

  421. said God

  422. knows everything.

  423. But that's not

  424. what David

  425. chose to do.

  426. God's knowledge

  427. of us,

  428. God's knowledge

  429. of everything

  430. is not an

  431. abstract,

  432. theoretical

  433. construct.

  434. God's knowledge

  435. of you and I

  436. is deeply

  437. personal.

  438. It is

  439. experiential.

  440. Hence the

  441. title of my

  442. message this

  443. morning,

  444. our personal

  445. God.

  446. God knows

  447. my ins

  448. and outs,

  449. my likes,

  450. my dislikes,

  451. my habits,

  452. my hobbies,

  453. my weaknesses,

  454. my sins,

  455. my deepest

  456. desires and

  457. struggles.

  458. God knows

  459. everything

  460. about who

  461. I am.

  462. The false

  463. gods

  464. that were

  465. worshipped in

  466. the ancient

  467. Near East

  468. were not

  469. personal.

  470. those that

  471. didn't actually

  472. interact with

  473. people,

  474. with humans,

  475. were not

  476. caring,

  477. were not

  478. loving.

  479. In contrast,

  480. David, I think,

  481. is intentionally

  482. drawing a deep

  483. contrast in

  484. calling out the

  485. intimate,

  486. personal relationship

  487. that the

  488. Heavenly Father

  489. has with

  490. David.

  491. God is

  492. loving.

  493. He is

  494. caring.

  495. He wants

  496. to get to

  497. know us.

  498. And what

  499. is David's

  500. response to

  501. God knowing

  502. him,

  503. everything he

  504. does and

  505. says and

  506. thinks?

  507. Look there

  508. at verse

  509. six.

  510. Such knowledge

  511. is too

  512. wonderful for

  513. me.

  514. It is high.

  515. I cannot

  516. attain it.

  517. The

  518. psalmist here

  519. cries out and

  520. is praising God

  521. for his

  522. knowledge.

  523. At the

  524. same time,

  525. he is

  526. comforted and

  527. encouraged that

  528. God knows

  529. everything about

  530. him.

  531. Do you

  532. find God's

  533. intimate,

  534. personal

  535. knowledge of

  536. everything you

  537. say and do

  538. and think

  539. comforting?

  540. Or deep

  541. down,

  542. does it

  543. terrify us

  544. just a little

  545. bit,

  546. that God

  547. knows our

  548. deepest

  549. secrets?

  550. Dwell on

  551. that for

  552. now.

  553. We're going

  554. to circle

  555. back near

  556. the end

  557. here.

  558. So the

  559. first point

  560. is God

  561. knows you.

  562. The second

  563. stanza,

  564. God is

  565. near us.

  566. Look there

  567. at verse

  568. seven.

  569. Where should

  570. I go from

  571. your spirit?

  572. Or where

  573. shall I flee

  574. from your

  575. presence?

  576. These are

  577. purely

  578. rhetorical

  579. questions.

  580. The psalmist

  581. here is not

  582. necessarily

  583. trying to

  584. flee God,

  585. but rather

  586. it's a

  587. figure of

  588. speech.

  589. If I

  590. were to

  591. run away,

  592. where can

  593. I go?

  594. And he

  595. provides some

  596. examples.

  597. Verse eight,

  598. if I ascend

  599. to heaven,

  600. you are

  601. there.

  602. If I

  603. make my

  604. bed in

  605. Sheol,

  606. you are

  607. there.

  608. Whether I

  609. go to the

  610. skies,

  611. heavens,

  612. whether I

  613. go under

  614. the ground

  615. to the

  616. ground,

  617. Sheol,

  618. God is

  619. there.

  620. These are

  621. the vertical

  622. extremes of

  623. David's world

  624. then.

  625. Verse nine,

  626. if I take

  627. the wings of

  628. the morning

  629. and dwell in

  630. the uttermost

  631. parts of

  632. the sea,

  633. again,

  634. the wings of

  635. the morning,

  636. the sun is

  637. rising in

  638. the east.

  639. Where Israel

  640. was to the

  641. west would

  642. have been the

  643. Mediterranean Sea,

  644. the extent

  645. of the

  646. known world

  647. at that

  648. time,

  649. dwell in

  650. the uttermost

  651. parts of

  652. the sea.

  653. Israel was

  654. not a

  655. great seafaring

  656. nation,

  657. so David's

  658. understanding of

  659. the sea would

  660. have been a

  661. little limited,

  662. but he

  663. understands that

  664. if he goes to

  665. the farthest

  666. extent of what

  667. David knows the

  668. world to be

  669. then,

  670. God will still

  671. be there.

  672. So the east

  673. or the west?

  674. And not

  675. just that God

  676. will be there,

  677. but God's

  678. hand is on

  679. him.

  680. Look at

  681. verse 10.

  682. Even there

  683. your hand

  684. shall still

  685. lead me,

  686. and your

  687. right hand

  688. shall hold

  689. me.

  690. This is the

  691. leading,

  692. protecting,

  693. shepherding,

  694. and caring

  695. hand of the

  696. Lord that

  697. harkens back

  698. to what I

  699. was just

  700. talking about

  701. in verse

  702. five.

  703. That David's

  704. like,

  705. ah,

  706. maybe darkness,

  707. maybe darkness

  708. can hide me.

  709. Verse 11.

  710. If I say,

  711. surely the

  712. darkness shall

  713. cover me,

  714. and the light

  715. about me at

  716. night,

  717. but even the

  718. darkness is

  719. not dark to

  720. you.

  721. The night is

  722. as bright as

  723. the day,

  724. for darkness

  725. is as light

  726. with you.

  727. It might be

  728. difficult for you

  729. and I to see

  730. in the dark,

  731. but the dark

  732. does not hide

  733. us from God.

  734. God can see

  735. in the dark

  736. just like we

  737. can see here

  738. this morning.

  739. He sees

  740. everything that

  741. happens under

  742. the cover of

  743. night.

  744. Thus,

  745. as we see

  746. David here,

  747. both God's

  748. omniscience,

  749. God's knowing

  750. everything,

  751. and his

  752. omnipresence,

  753. God being

  754. everywhere,

  755. both of these

  756. things are

  757. comforting and

  758. encouraging to

  759. David.

  760. All of us

  761. have various

  762. moments of our

  763. lives,

  764. walked through

  765. the valley

  766. of the

  767. shadow of

  768. death,

  769. whether

  770. oppression

  771. or opposition

  772. in this

  773. world,

  774. loneliness,

  775. despair,

  776. depression,

  777. poverty,

  778. want,

  779. abuse,

  780. neglect,

  781. whatever your

  782. life experience

  783. is,

  784. God has

  785. been with

  786. you,

  787. and God

  788. is with

  789. you today.

  790. even more

  791. importantly,

  792. for those of

  793. us in

  794. Christ here

  795. this morning,

  796. who are

  797. walking by

  798. faith and

  799. holding to

  800. Christ's death

  801. on the cross

  802. as the

  803. payment for

  804. a penalty

  805. for our

  806. sins,

  807. we have

  808. now the

  809. comforter,

  810. the Holy

  811. Spirit,

  812. who has

  813. sealed us

  814. and is

  815. dwelling within

  816. us this

  817. morning.

  818. Almighty

  819. God has

  820. taken up

  821. residence in

  822. you this

  823. morning.

  824. This is

  825. something that

  826. we have in

  827. the New

  828. Testament,

  829. the New

  830. Covenant,

  831. that David

  832. would not

  833. necessarily

  834. be experienced

  835. fully in

  836. the Old

  837. Covenant.

  838. I'm reminded

  839. of Romans

  840. 8.

  841. There is

  842. nothing,

  843. neither death,

  844. nor life,

  845. nor angels,

  846. nor rulers,

  847. nor things

  848. present,

  849. nor things

  850. to come,

  851. nor powers,

  852. nor height,

  853. nor depth,

  854. nor anything

  855. else in all

  856. of creation

  857. will be able

  858. to separate

  859. you from

  860. the love of

  861. God in

  862. Christ Jesus

  863. our Lord.

  864. What a

  865. comforting

  866. reminder

  867. that God's

  868. presence

  869. brings to

  870. us.

  871. You might

  872. know that

  873. God is

  874. near.

  875. You might

  876. agree,

  877. but you

  878. really live

  879. like God

  880. is near.

  881. You can,

  882. and you

  883. should.

  884. You should

  885. shout out

  886. to him,

  887. God is

  888. near you.

  889. This is

  890. what David

  891. wants us

  892. to understand

  893. about God.

  894. God

  895. knit you

  896. together.

  897. God

  898. created

  899. you.

  900. Look at

  901. verse 13

  902. with me.

  903. For you,

  904. you being

  905. God,

  906. for you

  907. formed my

  908. inward

  909. parts.

  910. You

  911. knitted me

  912. together

  913. in my

  914. mother's

  915. womb.

  916. God

  917. formed your

  918. inward

  919. parts.

  920. If these

  921. first two

  922. points,

  923. these first

  924. two stanzas

  925. of Psalm

  926. 139 don't

  927. get this

  928. point across,

  929. David is

  930. going to

  931. get even

  932. more intimate

  933. and more

  934. personal in

  935. the third

  936. stanza.

  937. This word

  938. knitted is

  939. often used

  940. for tapestries.

  941. If you've

  942. ever seen a

  943. tapestry of

  944. all the

  945. threads woven

  946. together to

  947. form a

  948. beautiful picture,

  949. if you flip it

  950. around, what's

  951. it look like?

  952. Y'all ever

  953. seen that

  954. before?

  955. It's a

  956. mess,

  957. yeah.

  958. You look

  959. inside of us,

  960. it might look

  961. like a jumbled

  962. mess,

  963. but God

  964. has created

  965. and knitted

  966. us together.

  967. God has

  968. formed our

  969. genes, our

  970. DNA, our

  971. organs, our

  972. muscles, our

  973. sinews, our

  974. veins, skin,

  975. hair, in

  976. just the way

  977. he wanted.

  978. Nowadays

  979. say, there's

  980. probably something

  981. about us that

  982. we wish God

  983. had made a

  984. little bit

  985. different.

  986. But he

  987. made you

  988. just the way

  989. he wanted.

  990. He gave

  991. you personality.

  992. He gave

  993. you a

  994. temperament.

  995. He gave

  996. you certain

  997. skills.

  998. He gave

  999. you certain

  1000. abilities.

  1001. He gave

  1002. you a

  1003. unique

  1004. laugh.

  1005. He gave

  1006. you unique

  1007. fingerprints.

  1008. All of

  1009. this is

  1010. unique to

  1011. you.

  1012. And the

  1013. psalmist

  1014. David here

  1015. in verse

  1016. 14, he

  1017. can't help

  1018. but just

  1019. stop himself

  1020. and just

  1021. praise God

  1022. for what

  1023. he has

  1024. done for

  1025. David.

  1026. I praise

  1027. you for I

  1028. am fearfully

  1029. and wonderfully

  1030. made.

  1031. Wonderful

  1032. are your

  1033. works.

  1034. My soul

  1035. knows it

  1036. very well.

  1037. I have a

  1038. brother who

  1039. is a medical

  1040. doctor and

  1041. I have a

  1042. brother-in-law

  1043. now who

  1044. has just

  1045. graduated from

  1046. medical school

  1047. and every

  1048. time we get

  1049. together and

  1050. discuss about

  1051. the beauty

  1052. and intricacies

  1053. of the human

  1054. body, I

  1055. cannot fathom

  1056. how other

  1057. people in the

  1058. world can

  1059. look at the

  1060. human body,

  1061. the genomes,

  1062. the DNA,

  1063. the structure

  1064. of the

  1065. eye, how

  1066. they believe

  1067. that they

  1068. have been

  1069. formed by

  1070. random

  1071. mathematical

  1072. chance that

  1073. originated in

  1074. a pool of

  1075. water.

  1076. I can't

  1077. fathom it.

  1078. I was going

  1079. to list off

  1080. some amazing

  1081. facts of the

  1082. human body

  1083. but I was

  1084. already running

  1085. long so I'm

  1086. going to mention

  1087. one.

  1088. The ability

  1089. of the human

  1090. body to heal

  1091. itself is

  1092. amazing if you

  1093. think about it.

  1094. from a

  1095. little paper

  1096. cut to a

  1097. broken bone

  1098. to viruses

  1099. to disease

  1100. God has

  1101. created the

  1102. human body

  1103. to recuperate

  1104. to heal

  1105. itself.

  1106. Just

  1107. astounding.

  1108. Everything about

  1109. how our bodies

  1110. point to a

  1111. designer and a

  1112. creator.

  1113. David continues

  1114. God's eyes

  1115. saw our

  1116. unformed

  1117. substance.

  1118. Even before

  1119. we were

  1120. God saw

  1121. us.

  1122. In your

  1123. book were

  1124. written every

  1125. one of

  1126. them the

  1127. days that

  1128. were formed

  1129. for me

  1130. when as

  1131. yet there

  1132. were none

  1133. of them.

  1134. God has

  1135. been near

  1136. you not

  1137. just since

  1138. you were

  1139. born but

  1140. he has

  1141. been with

  1142. you since

  1143. you were

  1144. in your

  1145. mother's

  1146. womb.

  1147. If he

  1148. goes further

  1149. he knows

  1150. all of

  1151. your days

  1152. that were

  1153. already written

  1154. down in

  1155. his book

  1156. the idea

  1157. of a

  1158. journal or

  1159. a commentary

  1160. before you

  1161. existed for

  1162. a single

  1163. day

  1164. God knew

  1165. everything

  1166. about you.

  1167. No one

  1168. else can

  1169. see this

  1170. book.

  1171. No one

  1172. not even

  1173. yourself can

  1174. ever change

  1175. any part of

  1176. what God

  1177. has written.

  1178. You cannot

  1179. add a day

  1180. you cannot

  1181. subtract a

  1182. day for

  1183. God has

  1184. already numbered

  1185. your days.

  1186. Everything

  1187. that I do

  1188. everything

  1189. that you

  1190. do

  1191. God

  1192. already

  1193. knows.

  1194. His

  1195. knowledge

  1196. is

  1197. complete

  1198. and

  1199. perfect.

  1200. Now I'd

  1201. be remiss

  1202. here if I

  1203. didn't point

  1204. out that

  1205. this passage

  1206. is one of

  1207. the strongest

  1208. evidences from

  1209. the Bible

  1210. in support

  1211. of the

  1212. personhood

  1213. of the

  1214. preborn.

  1215. One of the

  1216. common phrases

  1217. that the

  1218. world uses

  1219. is that

  1220. I can do

  1221. whatever I

  1222. want with

  1223. my body.

  1224. this assumes

  1225. that the

  1226. preborn is

  1227. just a part

  1228. of a

  1229. woman's

  1230. body.

  1231. Based on

  1232. the science

  1233. we have

  1234. today and

  1235. the evidence

  1236. of scriptures

  1237. here this

  1238. morning,

  1239. especially

  1240. some of the

  1241. pronouns that

  1242. David uses

  1243. here,

  1244. which clearly

  1245. distinguishes

  1246. his body,

  1247. his preborn

  1248. body,

  1249. from his

  1250. mother's

  1251. body,

  1252. we have

  1253. a distinct

  1254. and biblical

  1255. evidence for

  1256. the personhood

  1257. of the

  1258. preborn.

  1259. We do

  1260. well to

  1261. understand

  1262. why

  1263. we

  1264. protect

  1265. the

  1266. preborn.

  1267. What is

  1268. David's

  1269. response to

  1270. all this

  1271. knowledge of

  1272. what God

  1273. has done

  1274. to knit

  1275. him

  1276. together?

  1277. Look there

  1278. at verse

  1279. 17.

  1280. How precious

  1281. to me are

  1282. your thoughts,

  1283. O God!

  1284. How vast

  1285. is the sum

  1286. of them!

  1287. If I

  1288. could count

  1289. them,

  1290. they are

  1291. more than

  1292. the sand.

  1293. I awake

  1294. and I am

  1295. still with

  1296. you.

  1297. This idea

  1298. of precious

  1299. is that

  1300. they're worthy

  1301. they're

  1302. heavy.

  1303. How many

  1304. are God's

  1305. thoughts?

  1306. More than

  1307. the sand.

  1308. God's

  1309. thoughts

  1310. encompass

  1311. our entire

  1312. lives.

  1313. He knows

  1314. what is

  1315. best for

  1316. us,

  1317. not today,

  1318. not just

  1319. tomorrow,

  1320. not just

  1321. next month,

  1322. not in

  1323. five years,

  1324. but for

  1325. eternity.

  1326. Being able

  1327. to retain

  1328. this much

  1329. information is

  1330. unfathomable

  1331. to me.

  1332. Talking to

  1333. the guys

  1334. here first,

  1335. let's be

  1336. honest,

  1337. you and

  1338. I can

  1339. barely have

  1340. two or

  1341. three thoughts

  1342. at the

  1343. same time,

  1344. right?

  1345. Ladies,

  1346. maybe you

  1347. can handle

  1348. a hundred

  1349. thoughts

  1350. at the

  1351. same time,

  1352. but that

  1353. is still

  1354. well short

  1355. of what

  1356. our Heavenly

  1357. Father can

  1358. fathom all

  1359. at the

  1360. same time.

  1361. He knows

  1362. our thoughts.

  1363. He knows

  1364. the thoughts

  1365. of everyone

  1366. here this

  1367. morning,

  1368. including

  1369. those who

  1370. are daydreaming

  1371. and not

  1372. paying attention

  1373. to me while

  1374. I'm joining

  1375. on up here.

  1376. If you're

  1377. daydreaming,

  1378. God knows

  1379. your thoughts.

  1380. Come back,

  1381. hear me out,

  1382. listen to

  1383. this.

  1384. God

  1385. personally

  1386. knows

  1387. you.

  1388. God is

  1389. personally

  1390. near to

  1391. you.

  1392. God

  1393. writing all

  1394. the days

  1395. of our

  1396. lives

  1397. point to

  1398. a big

  1399. truth of

  1400. scripture

  1401. that God

  1402. is sovereign.

  1403. This is a

  1404. big word

  1405. that means

  1406. that God

  1407. is powerful.

  1408. He is in

  1409. control of

  1410. everything.

  1411. This can

  1412. be a

  1413. comfort and

  1414. a consolation

  1415. to us

  1416. because we

  1417. know that

  1418. nothing can

  1419. happen to

  1420. us that

  1421. God already

  1422. doesn't

  1423. know.

  1424. In

  1425. plenty,

  1426. in want,

  1427. in health,

  1428. in pain,

  1429. in comfort,

  1430. in suffering,

  1431. we often

  1432. want to

  1433. know how

  1434. our lives

  1435. are going

  1436. to turn

  1437. out.

  1438. What is

  1439. the Lord

  1440. doing?

  1441. But David

  1442. says here,

  1443. I trust

  1444. you,

  1445. O Lord,

  1446. for your

  1447. thoughts are

  1448. precious.

  1449. They are

  1450. worthy.

  1451. You have

  1452. written all

  1453. the days

  1454. of my

  1455. life.

  1456. I can't

  1457. begin to

  1458. fathom and

  1459. count your

  1460. knowledge.

  1461. It is too

  1462. wonderful for

  1463. me.

  1464. Now the

  1465. matter of

  1466. God's

  1467. sovereignty is

  1468. a heavy

  1469. topic and

  1470. we don't

  1471. have the

  1472. time or

  1473. place this

  1474. morning to

  1475. dive in

  1476. and fully

  1477. unpack it,

  1478. but one

  1479. application that

  1480. I do want

  1481. us to consider

  1482. this morning.

  1483. It is

  1484. not wise or

  1485. fruitful for

  1486. us to

  1487. ever have

  1488. to worry

  1489. or be

  1490. anxious about

  1491. what's going

  1492. to happen

  1493. tomorrow.

  1494. The Lord

  1495. in the

  1496. Gospels

  1497. himself warns

  1498. us not to

  1499. be anxious

  1500. for tomorrow,

  1501. for our

  1502. Heavenly

  1503. Father knows

  1504. all that

  1505. you need.

  1506. What does

  1507. he say

  1508. next?

  1509. But seek

  1510. first the

  1511. kingdom of

  1512. God and

  1513. his

  1514. righteousness,

  1515. and all

  1516. these things,

  1517. food,

  1518. clothing,

  1519. housing,

  1520. provision,

  1521. will be added

  1522. to you.

  1523. We are

  1524. to live

  1525. by faith

  1526. day in

  1527. and day

  1528. out.

  1529. Our

  1530. understanding,

  1531. our grasp

  1532. of God's

  1533. provision and

  1534. plan for

  1535. us should

  1536. strengthen our

  1537. faith as

  1538. the Lord

  1539. works everything

  1540. out for

  1541. our good

  1542. and his

  1543. glory.

  1544. Trusting in

  1545. God should

  1546. increase our

  1547. love and

  1548. affection for

  1549. him and

  1550. increase our

  1551. passion and

  1552. zeal for

  1553. worshiping

  1554. him.

  1555. David is

  1556. pretty clear

  1557. in stanza

  1558. four that

  1559. not everyone

  1560. acknowledges

  1561. this God.

  1562. This God

  1563. that knows

  1564. you, that

  1565. is near you,

  1566. that has

  1567. knit you

  1568. together.

  1569. There are

  1570. people, maybe

  1571. even within

  1572. the church,

  1573. that conduct

  1574. their lives as

  1575. if God did

  1576. not know

  1577. them, as

  1578. if God is

  1579. not watching

  1580. them, as

  1581. if God did

  1582. not know

  1583. their very

  1584. being.

  1585. we see a

  1586. rather jarring

  1587. shift in

  1588. David's tone

  1589. and content,

  1590. the vengeance

  1591. of the Lord.

  1592. Or as I

  1593. put it, to

  1594. keep my

  1595. Baptist

  1596. not

  1597. alliteration

  1598. consonants,

  1599. no I should

  1600. have looked

  1601. that up,

  1602. whatever, to

  1603. keep the

  1604. ends going,

  1605. God is the

  1606. nemesis of

  1607. the wicked.

  1608. The nemesis

  1609. is retributive

  1610. justice.

  1611. A common

  1612. definition might

  1613. be arch enemy.

  1614. A little

  1615. more archaic

  1616. definition that's

  1617. not as common

  1618. now, it's the

  1619. agent of

  1620. someone's

  1621. downfall.

  1622. God will

  1623. bring vengeance

  1624. and God is

  1625. the nemesis

  1626. of the

  1627. wicked.

  1628. Look at

  1629. verses 19

  1630. with me.

  1631. David shifts

  1632. his tone and

  1633. says, oh that

  1634. you would slay

  1635. the wicked,

  1636. oh God,

  1637. oh men of

  1638. blood, depart

  1639. from me.

  1640. They speak

  1641. against you

  1642. with malicious

  1643. intent.

  1644. Your enemies

  1645. take your

  1646. name in

  1647. vain.

  1648. Do I not

  1649. hate those

  1650. who hate

  1651. you, oh

  1652. Lord?

  1653. And do I

  1654. not loathe

  1655. those who

  1656. rise up

  1657. against you?

  1658. I hate

  1659. them with

  1660. complete

  1661. hatred.

  1662. I count

  1663. them my

  1664. enemies.

  1665. This is

  1666. what's called

  1667. an imprecatory

  1668. prayer.

  1669. This is David

  1670. praying out to

  1671. God, calling

  1672. for God to

  1673. show his

  1674. vengeance, to

  1675. bring his

  1676. vengeance against

  1677. the wicked.

  1678. These are

  1679. men that

  1680. have blood

  1681. on their

  1682. hands.

  1683. They're

  1684. murderers.

  1685. They deny

  1686. God's very

  1687. existence.

  1688. They deny

  1689. that God

  1690. is present.

  1691. They are

  1692. blasphemers who

  1693. speak against

  1694. God.

  1695. These are

  1696. people that

  1697. hate God.

  1698. Maybe our

  1699. first thought

  1700. as we're reading

  1701. Psalm 139 is

  1702. where does this

  1703. come from?

  1704. this was a

  1705. nice poetic

  1706. psalm,

  1707. uplifting,

  1708. encouraging,

  1709. and David

  1710. turns around

  1711. and is like,

  1712. kill them

  1713. God.

  1714. I don't

  1715. think it's

  1716. completely out of

  1717. left field

  1718. though.

  1719. For the

  1720. first 18

  1721. verses of

  1722. this chapter,

  1723. David has

  1724. been meditating

  1725. on who

  1726. God is.

  1727. The

  1728. immensity

  1729. of God's

  1730. knowledge,

  1731. his care,

  1732. his love,

  1733. his sovereignty,

  1734. have caused

  1735. David to

  1736. worship him,

  1737. to esteem

  1738. God,

  1739. to wonder

  1740. at how big

  1741. and great

  1742. he is.

  1743. And when

  1744. you and I

  1745. love and

  1746. appreciate God

  1747. as much as

  1748. David does

  1749. here in

  1750. Psalm 139,

  1751. you and I

  1752. ought to find

  1753. anything that

  1754. is against

  1755. God to be

  1756. revolting,

  1757. despicable,

  1758. something that

  1759. needs to be

  1760. opposed.

  1761. men,

  1762. wouldn't the

  1763. love for

  1764. your wife

  1765. and your

  1766. children cause

  1767. hatred and

  1768. justice to

  1769. rise up,

  1770. of someone to

  1771. desire evil

  1772. on them,

  1773. going to the

  1774. worst to

  1775. defile them?

  1776. Mothers,

  1777. ladies,

  1778. wouldn't your

  1779. mother bear

  1780. instincts kink

  1781. in if

  1782. somebody came

  1783. after one of

  1784. your little

  1785. ones?

  1786. You would

  1787. hate the

  1788. evil.

  1789. evil.

  1790. You would

  1791. hate the

  1792. evildoer

  1793. because of

  1794. the object

  1795. of that

  1796. evil,

  1797. somebody you

  1798. love,

  1799. somebody you

  1800. cherish.

  1801. evil.

  1802. I don't

  1803. see David

  1804. in Psalm

  1805. 139 being

  1806. any different,

  1807. just the

  1808. object is

  1809. different.

  1810. David's

  1811. hatred is

  1812. directed at

  1813. those who

  1814. oppose God,

  1815. still evil.

  1816. As I was

  1817. preparing, I

  1818. was listening to

  1819. Alistair Begg preach

  1820. on one Psalm

  1821. 39, and I

  1822. couldn't put it

  1823. any differently,

  1824. so I'm just

  1825. going to quote

  1826. him and

  1827. paraphrase it

  1828. to make it a

  1829. little bit

  1830. shorter.

  1831. He puts it

  1832. this way,

  1833. David sees

  1834. how evil

  1835. evil is,

  1836. but we

  1837. often fail

  1838. to.

  1839. As a result

  1840. of this, we

  1841. are uncomfortable

  1842. with God's

  1843. justice and

  1844. wrath.

  1845. We fail to

  1846. see how

  1847. holy God

  1848. is.

  1849. A holy

  1850. God cannot

  1851. stand evil,

  1852. evil, and

  1853. he must

  1854. punish

  1855. evildoers.

  1856. I'll

  1857. posit that

  1858. if you

  1859. are uncomfortable

  1860. with a

  1861. passage like

  1862. this this

  1863. morning,

  1864. maybe you

  1865. don't fully

  1866. understand God's

  1867. wrath and

  1868. justice against

  1869. sin and

  1870. evil.

  1871. Maybe you're

  1872. too comfortable

  1873. with the evil

  1874. that is around

  1875. us.

  1876. We must

  1877. hate

  1878. evil.

  1879. We are

  1880. often unsure

  1881. what to do

  1882. with this,

  1883. but

  1884. imprecatory

  1885. prayers are

  1886. not something

  1887. that we

  1888. just find

  1889. in the

  1890. Old

  1891. Testament.

  1892. Jesus

  1893. himself

  1894. references

  1895. Psalm 69,

  1896. another

  1897. imprecatory

  1898. prayer,

  1899. multiple

  1900. times.

  1901. We see it

  1902. in John

  1903. 15 and

  1904. Matthew

  1905. 27.

  1906. Jesus

  1907. himself,

  1908. before he

  1909. goes to

  1910. the cross

  1911. in Matthew

  1912. 23,

  1913. has a

  1914. series of

  1915. curses,

  1916. promising

  1917. vengeance on

  1918. those that

  1919. oppose him.

  1920. The

  1921. apostle Paul

  1922. also uses

  1923. Psalm 69

  1924. in Romans

  1925. 11.

  1926. And maybe

  1927. the most

  1928. poignant

  1929. language is

  1930. what Paul

  1931. says in

  1932. Galatians

  1933. 1,

  1934. where he

  1935. uses very

  1936. strong language

  1937. against those

  1938. preaching another

  1939. gospel.

  1940. If anyone

  1941. is preaching

  1942. another different

  1943. gospel,

  1944. let them be

  1945. accursed.

  1946. That is

  1947. damned.

  1948. They are

  1949. anathema.

  1950. They are to

  1951. be cut

  1952. off.

  1953. Is that the

  1954. way you think

  1955. about evil?

  1956. Nearby to

  1957. where Calvary

  1958. Redeeming

  1959. Grace meets,

  1960. there is a

  1961. so-called

  1962. church,

  1963. the so-called

  1964. preacher,

  1965. that twists

  1966. the gospel

  1967. into a

  1968. message of

  1969. hope,

  1970. not based

  1971. on Christ,

  1972. but on

  1973. an amalgamation,

  1974. a syncretism

  1975. of personal

  1976. empowerment,

  1977. of spiritual

  1978. meditation.

  1979. I must confess

  1980. that almost

  1981. every time I

  1982. drive by this

  1983. so-called

  1984. church,

  1985. I have

  1986. prayed one

  1987. of these

  1988. imprecatory

  1989. prayers against

  1990. this church.

  1991. I have

  1992. asked God

  1993. to stop

  1994. the deception

  1995. that is

  1996. happening

  1997. within the

  1998. walls of

  1999. this church,

  2000. that they

  2001. would close

  2002. their doors

  2003. and the

  2004. blaspheming

  2005. might stop.

  2006. But while I

  2007. can pray that

  2008. God would

  2009. surely show

  2010. his justice

  2011. against those

  2012. who are

  2013. twisting his

  2014. words,

  2015. preaching a

  2016. false gospel,

  2017. I can hate

  2018. what they

  2019. preach.

  2020. I can speak

  2021. out against

  2022. it as I'm

  2023. doing right

  2024. now,

  2025. but that

  2026. doesn't

  2027. necessarily mean

  2028. that I am

  2029. the means

  2030. of meting

  2031. out God's

  2032. justice.

  2033. I think it's

  2034. important,

  2035. as you pointed

  2036. out here,

  2037. that David

  2038. himself in

  2039. Psalm 139

  2040. is not the

  2041. means of

  2042. God's

  2043. judgment.

  2044. David is not

  2045. talking about

  2046. personal vengeance,

  2047. this is divine

  2048. vengeance.

  2049. Instead,

  2050. David is

  2051. directing his

  2052. prayer to

  2053. God,

  2054. he's asking

  2055. God to

  2056. direct and

  2057. to display

  2058. his justice

  2059. on the

  2060. wicked.

  2061. This is

  2062. justice that

  2063. God has

  2064. already

  2065. promised to

  2066. those that

  2067. disobey the

  2068. law and the

  2069. prophets.

  2070. He is

  2071. calling for

  2072. God to be

  2073. vindicated against

  2074. those who deny

  2075. his omniscience.

  2076. He is asking

  2077. God to

  2078. demonstrate his

  2079. presence to

  2080. those that

  2081. deny that he

  2082. exists.

  2083. He wants

  2084. God to

  2085. demonstrate his

  2086. power to

  2087. those that

  2088. deny his

  2089. authority.

  2090. I think in

  2091. these verses,

  2092. 19 through 22,

  2093. David is

  2094. aligning

  2095. himself with

  2096. God as

  2097. he makes

  2098. God's

  2099. thoughts his

  2100. thoughts.

  2101. The psalmist

  2102. wants to

  2103. distance himself

  2104. from the

  2105. wicked and

  2106. he calls for

  2107. God to be

  2108. his witness

  2109. that he

  2110. hates evil.

  2111. This is

  2112. essentially an

  2113. oath of

  2114. fealty,

  2115. of loyalty

  2116. to God.

  2117. David's

  2118. saying,

  2119. these are

  2120. the Lord's

  2121. enemies.

  2122. I loathe

  2123. them.

  2124. I rise up

  2125. and stand up

  2126. against them.

  2127. I count them

  2128. as enemies

  2129. because they

  2130. are God's

  2131. enemies.

  2132. What do we

  2133. do to

  2134. our enemies

  2135. today?

  2136. Jesus in

  2137. Matthew 5

  2138. says we

  2139. are to

  2140. love our

  2141. enemies and

  2142. to do good

  2143. to those who

  2144. persecute us.

  2145. We as

  2146. Christians today

  2147. are called to

  2148. share the

  2149. good news of

  2150. the gospel.

  2151. This is our

  2152. mission.

  2153. Vengeance is

  2154. mine, God

  2155. says.

  2156. I will

  2157. repay.

  2158. So

  2159. understanding

  2160. and knowing

  2161. that God

  2162. is the

  2163. nemesis

  2164. of the

  2165. wicked.

  2166. What is

  2167. David's

  2168. response?

  2169. Look there

  2170. at verse

  2171. 23.

  2172. Search me,

  2173. O God,

  2174. and know

  2175. my heart.

  2176. Try me

  2177. and know

  2178. my thoughts.

  2179. See if

  2180. there be

  2181. any grievous

  2182. way in

  2183. me and

  2184. lead me

  2185. in the

  2186. way

  2187. everlasting.

  2188. I think

  2189. David sees

  2190. evil for

  2191. what it

  2192. is.

  2193. He knows

  2194. God is

  2195. going to

  2196. destroy the

  2197. wicked.

  2198. And David

  2199. looks at

  2200. himself and

  2201. he cares for

  2202. his own

  2203. holiness.

  2204. He turns to

  2205. God and

  2206. asks God to

  2207. examine him

  2208. so that God

  2209. can then

  2210. reveal what

  2211. God knows

  2212. to David

  2213. so he can

  2214. repent of

  2215. that sin.

  2216. He can

  2217. confess it

  2218. to God

  2219. that he

  2220. can stay

  2221. in the

  2222. way

  2223. everlasting.

  2224. In a

  2225. wonderfully

  2226. poetic way

  2227. David is

  2228. repeating

  2229. essentially

  2230. exactly how

  2231. he started

  2232. the psalm.

  2233. O Lord

  2234. you have

  2235. searched me

  2236. and know

  2237. me.

  2238. But rather

  2239. than stating

  2240. a fact as

  2241. he does in

  2242. verse 1

  2243. he calls out

  2244. for God

  2245. to do this

  2246. again to

  2247. search him

  2248. to examine

  2249. him.

  2250. This is a

  2251. posture of

  2252. humility.

  2253. The idea

  2254. of try

  2255. here is

  2256. like a

  2257. trial.

  2258. Bring

  2259. forth the

  2260. evidence.

  2261. Lay out

  2262. the evidence.

  2263. Let it

  2264. be weighed.

  2265. Is there

  2266. any

  2267. grievous

  2268. way

  2269. in me?

  2270. Now

  2271. while I

  2272. was studying

  2273. this one

  2274. of my

  2275. first thoughts

  2276. was who

  2277. is David

  2278. to say

  2279. something

  2280. like this?

  2281. David

  2282. was not

  2283. perfect.

  2284. In fact

  2285. David

  2286. committed

  2287. some grievous

  2288. sins that

  2289. I would

  2290. guess many

  2291. of us have

  2292. not committed

  2293. here this

  2294. morning.

  2295. He

  2296. committed

  2297. adultery

  2298. with

  2299. Bathsheba.

  2300. He then

  2301. tried to

  2302. cover it

  2303. up by

  2304. murdering

  2305. her

  2306. husband.

  2307. He

  2308. isn't

  2309. being overly

  2310. self-righteous

  2311. here I

  2312. don't think.

  2313. He's aware

  2314. of what he's

  2315. done.

  2316. He knows

  2317. his own

  2318. heart.

  2319. But despite

  2320. all of this

  2321. being laid

  2322. bare before

  2323. God

  2324. including

  2325. his

  2326. deceit,

  2327. his sins,

  2328. his wickedness

  2329. he can

  2330. still say

  2331. search me

  2332. oh God.

  2333. How?

  2334. How can

  2335. you do

  2336. something like

  2337. that knowing

  2338. who you've

  2339. done,

  2340. knowing who

  2341. you are?

  2342. Because he

  2343. knows that he's

  2344. been forgiven

  2345. and those sins

  2346. have been

  2347. covered,

  2348. have been

  2349. forgiven,

  2350. have been

  2351. atoned for

  2352. by God.

  2353. With his

  2354. sins forgiven

  2355. he can then

  2356. confidently

  2357. approach this

  2358. all-knowing,

  2359. all-present

  2360. God.

  2361. For the

  2362. Lord is

  2363. merciful and

  2364. gracious,

  2365. slow to

  2366. anger and

  2367. abounding in

  2368. steadfast love

  2369. and faithfulness.

  2370. May God's

  2371. gracious kindness

  2372. lead us to

  2373. repentance and

  2374. his grace

  2375. assure us to

  2376. trust him so

  2377. that our

  2378. joyful prayer

  2379. may echo

  2380. David's.

  2381. Search me

  2382. oh God.

  2383. This is a

  2384. bold prayer.

  2385. I would

  2386. encourage you

  2387. if this is not

  2388. a regular

  2389. practice to

  2390. make it a

  2391. regular

  2392. practice.

  2393. But I

  2394. would caution

  2395. you that

  2396. this is not

  2397. something that

  2398. should be done

  2399. just to check

  2400. off a box

  2401. on your

  2402. to-do list.

  2403. God will

  2404. reveal your

  2405. hidden sins.

  2406. We must be

  2407. humble and

  2408. concerned with

  2409. our holiness.

  2410. So the

  2411. four stanzas

  2412. God knows

  2413. you.

  2414. God is

  2415. near you.

  2416. God has

  2417. knit you.

  2418. God is

  2419. the nemesis

  2420. of the

  2421. wicked.

  2422. In conclusion

  2423. this morning I

  2424. want to return

  2425. to that initial

  2426. question I asked

  2427. in the intro.

  2428. How would you

  2429. describe God

  2430. this morning?

  2431. Does your

  2432. God resemble

  2433. the God of

  2434. Psalm 139?

  2435. Referring back to

  2436. Tozer, another

  2437. quote, he

  2438. says, a

  2439. right conception

  2440. of God is

  2441. basic not

  2442. only to

  2443. systematic

  2444. theology but

  2445. to practical

  2446. Christian

  2447. living.

  2448. Where our

  2449. understanding of

  2450. God is

  2451. inadequate or

  2452. out of

  2453. plum, the

  2454. whole structure

  2455. must sooner or

  2456. later collapse.

  2457. God is

  2458. so in other

  2459. words if you

  2460. and I fail to

  2461. understand who

  2462. God is, if we

  2463. fail to live

  2464. like God knows

  2465. us intimately, if

  2466. we fail to

  2467. understand and

  2468. to live like God

  2469. is near us, if

  2470. we fail to

  2471. understand that

  2472. God has knit

  2473. us together, he

  2474. knows every part

  2475. of us, if we

  2476. fail to understand

  2477. that God is the

  2478. nemesis of the

  2479. wicked, we will

  2480. fail in our

  2481. day-to-day lives.

  2482. As we look to

  2483. honor God in

  2484. our homes, our

  2485. workplaces, school,

  2486. gyms, church,

  2487. wherever you go,

  2488. is this your

  2489. God?

  2490. I love how

  2491. Spurgeon put it

  2492. in one of his

  2493. sermons.

  2494. We may judge as

  2495. to our position

  2496. before God by

  2497. this test.

  2498. Is the thought

  2499. of his constant

  2500. observation of

  2501. us a subject

  2502. of joy?

  2503. or of dread?

  2504. I'll say that

  2505. again so I can

  2506. not trip over my

  2507. own words.

  2508. Is the thought

  2509. of his constant

  2510. observation of

  2511. us a subject

  2512. of joy?

  2513. Or of dread?

  2514. If we dread it,

  2515. surely we have

  2516. the old spirit of

  2517. bondage that is

  2518. the law and sin

  2519. still upon us.

  2520. But if we find

  2521. joy, if we

  2522. rejoice in it,

  2523. then we may know

  2524. that we have

  2525. received the spirit

  2526. of adoption by

  2527. which we can

  2528. cry out,

  2529. Abba,

  2530. Father.

  2531. If you're here

  2532. this morning and

  2533. you are not

  2534. walking in faith

  2535. of Christ's

  2536. sacrifice on the

  2537. cross,

  2538. God's knowledge

  2539. of everything you

  2540. say,

  2541. do,

  2542. and think

  2543. should terrify

  2544. you.

  2545. God sees

  2546. everything you

  2547. do and he

  2548. will punish

  2549. those who

  2550. have sinned

  2551. against him.

  2552. The justice

  2553. and wrath of

  2554. God against

  2555. those that

  2556. oppose him is

  2557. thorough and

  2558. complete.

  2559. I would

  2560. implore you

  2561. this morning

  2562. to cry out

  2563. to God for

  2564. his mercy.

  2565. Do not be

  2566. among the

  2567. wicked who

  2568. will be slain

  2569. by the

  2570. Lord.

  2571. The Lord

  2572. himself has

  2573. offered a

  2574. way of

  2575. escape.

  2576. The Lord's

  2577. kindness to

  2578. you should

  2579. drive each

  2580. and every

  2581. one of us

  2582. to repentance.

  2583. If you

  2584. are unsure

  2585. or would

  2586. like to

  2587. know more,

  2588. I would

  2589. love to

  2590. talk to

  2591. you more

  2592. afterwards or

  2593. anybody you've

  2594. seen up

  2595. front here

  2596. this morning.

  2597. Today is

  2598. the day of

  2599. salvation.

  2600. Today is

  2601. the day to

  2602. know that

  2603. you can

  2604. live in

  2605. comfort in

  2606. God's

  2607. ever-present.

  2608. Christians,

  2609. brothers and

  2610. sisters, I

  2611. want each of

  2612. you here to

  2613. walk out of

  2614. here with

  2615. confidence and

  2616. comfort, knowing

  2617. that God's

  2618. knowledge and

  2619. his presence in

  2620. your life is

  2621. not a means of

  2622. dread, but of

  2623. joy.

  2624. David wrote

  2625. this about a

  2626. thousand years

  2627. before Christ

  2628. came.

  2629. We can look

  2630. back now,

  2631. two thousand

  2632. years later,

  2633. and we can see

  2634. Christ dying

  2635. on the cross,

  2636. appeasing God's

  2637. wrath, making

  2638. you a child of

  2639. God, that you

  2640. do not need to

  2641. be afraid of

  2642. the Father.

  2643. God knows

  2644. you.

  2645. God is near

  2646. you.

  2647. God has knit

  2648. you together,

  2649. and those in

  2650. Christ no

  2651. longer need to

  2652. live in fear,

  2653. but we can walk

  2654. in the way

  2655. everlasting.

  2656. God is

  2657. God.

  2658. Just let that

  2659. sink in for a

  2660. moment.

  2661. He is a

  2662. personal God

  2663. who cares for

  2664. you, who

  2665. guides you, who

  2666. protects you,

  2667. because you are

  2668. his adopted

  2669. child.

  2670. This

  2671. understanding of

  2672. God should

  2673. cause us to

  2674. delight in

  2675. him, to

  2676. worship him, to

  2677. love him, to

  2678. serve him, to

  2679. live for him

  2680. each and every

  2681. day.

  2682. is this

  2683. your God?

  2684. I hope so.

  2685. May we always

  2686. orient our

  2687. knowledge of

  2688. God according

  2689. to how God

  2690. describes himself

  2691. in his word.

  2692. May God's

  2693. gracious kindness

  2694. lead us to

  2695. repentance, and

  2696. his grace assure

  2697. us to trust in

  2698. him, so that our

  2699. joyful prayer may

  2700. echo David.

  2701. Search me,

  2702. oh God.

  2703. Know my

  2704. heart.

  2705. Lead me in

  2706. the way

  2707. everlasting.

  2708. You bow with

  2709. me in prayer.

  2710. Lord, you

  2711. have searched

  2712. and known

  2713. me.

  2714. You know

  2715. who I am.

  2716. You know

  2717. what I do.

  2718. You know

  2719. where I go.

  2720. You know

  2721. what I think.

  2722. You know

  2723. what I'm

  2724. going to say

  2725. before I

  2726. even say

  2727. it.

  2728. You are

  2729. near me

  2730. always, in

  2731. the heavens,

  2732. in death,

  2733. east, west,

  2734. in the midst

  2735. of the darkest

  2736. trials.

  2737. Lord, you

  2738. have formed

  2739. my inward

  2740. parts and

  2741. knitted me

  2742. together.

  2743. Lord, before I

  2744. have lived a

  2745. single day, you

  2746. had already

  2747. written all my

  2748. days in your

  2749. book.

  2750. Oh Lord, how

  2751. majestic you

  2752. are.

  2753. How transcendent

  2754. are your

  2755. thoughts and

  2756. your ways.

  2757. How wonderful

  2758. are your

  2759. thoughts.

  2760. Despite

  2761. knowing who I

  2762. am, Lord, you

  2763. still care for

  2764. me, for each

  2765. one of us here

  2766. this morning.

  2767. Lord, may you

  2768. bring peace and

  2769. repentance to

  2770. those here this

  2771. morning who are

  2772. wrestling with

  2773. the dread of

  2774. the terror of

  2775. who you are,

  2776. knowing that

  2777. you see all.

  2778. May you

  2779. correct how we

  2780. view who you

  2781. are, that we

  2782. may worship you

  2783. well, that we

  2784. may live our

  2785. lives consistently,

  2786. day in, day

  2787. out, that you

  2788. may be glorified.

  2789. Lord, may we be

  2790. a humble people

  2791. that pray a bold

  2792. prayer that you

  2793. search us and

  2794. know us

  2795. intimately.

  2796. May my

  2797. attitudes, actions,

  2798. motives, and

  2799. thoughts be laid

  2800. bare.

  2801. May you lead me

  2802. in the way

  2803. everlasting.

  2804. I pray all this

  2805. in the glorious

  2806. name of Jesus

  2807. Christ.

  2808. Amen.
