  1. We've been spending our summer in the Psalms.

  2. Today our sermon text is Psalm 15,

  3. the five verses of Psalm 15.

  4. It's another Psalm of David.

  5. The occasion for Psalm 15 is not given to us explicitly,

  6. but the theme reminds us of Psalm 24 that we just sang.

  7. Who may ascend the hill of the Lord?

  8. As I read Psalm 15,

  9. you'll be hearing the law and the standard of God.

  10. I'm not going to tell you up front what genre this is,

  11. but I want you to try to answer that question in your mind.

  12. And then about halfway through the sermon,

  13. I'll try to make that very clear as well.

  14. So as I read this,

  15. I do so believing that this is God's inspired,

  16. inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  17. And if you receive it as such,

  18. when I'm done, I'll say this is the word of God

  19. and you say, thanks be to God.

  20. Psalm 15, a Psalm of David.

  21. Lord, who may abide in your tabernacle?

  22. Who may dwell in your holy hill?

  23. He who walks uprightly and works righteousness and speaks the truth in his heart,

  24. and who does not backbite with his tongue,

  25. nor does evil to his neighbor,

  26. nor does he take up a reproach against his friend,

  27. in whose eyes a vile person is despised,

  28. but he honors those who fear the Lord.

  29. He who swears to his own hurt and does not change.

  30. He who does not put out his money at usury,

  31. nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.

  32. He who does these things shall never be moved.

  33. This is the word of the Lord.

  34. You may be seated.

  35. Would you pray with me?

  36. Lord, only you can cut us to the heart.

  37. We pray, Lord, that by the power of your Holy Spirit,

  38. you will minister your word to your people.

  39. I pray that you'll help me to be very careful

  40. as I minister and exposit the words that your Holy Spirit inspired.

  41. I pray for your Holy Spirit in every true believer to be discerning,

  42. to take only what is from you,

  43. and that your Spirit will apply it to our lives.

  44. I pray, Lord, that for the glory of Jesus Christ,

  45. the only mediator,

  46. that your law and your gospel will be distinct

  47. and also harmonious in the life of the believer.

  48. We ask all of this for your glory, for our good.

  49. Amen.

  50. Do you think it's true that there is no place like home?

  51. We say home is where the heart is.

  52. We think of a place where you feel at home.

  53. If we're pilgrims and sojourners in this life,

  54. like Peter wrote to the church, that's what we are.

  55. We should feel most at home right here

  56. with God's people, with the Holy Spirit abiding with us.

  57. Do you feel at home when you're with God's people?

  58. And there's no place like home, is there?

  59. In Psalm 15, David says,

  60. Lord, who may abide?

  61. Who may dwell?

  62. Who can be at home with you?

  63. That's the question.

  64. So that's my question for you this morning.

  65. Who may abide or who may dwell with God?

  66. On what grounds can you dwell and be at home with God?

  67. My first observation is the longing in David's heart

  68. in verses 1 and 2.

  69. My proposition is that every heart has this longing.

  70. Every heart has a longing.

  71. Look at verse 1.

  72. The question on David's mind is this.

  73. Lord, who may abide in your tabernacle?

  74. King David had his army.

  75. He had his family.

  76. He was thinking about the succession to the throne.

  77. Yet he longed to be somewhere else, not in the palace.

  78. He longed to be in God's house,

  79. in that little tent on Zion,

  80. that little tabernacle.

  81. That's what his heart really longed for the most.

  82. And as king, we don't know what emotions he's feeling,

  83. but he certainly felt the responsibility over God's people.

  84. It was the king's job to provide all the provisions for the priests

  85. to be able to do their job and minister.

  86. It was the king's job to defend the borders

  87. and keep the people of God safe and stable and at peace

  88. so that they can worship their God peacefully.

  89. But it was the king's limitation

  90. that he depended on this other office,

  91. the office of priests.

  92. The king was not omnipotent in Israel.

  93. The king was a vessel,

  94. and it was the Lord who had to welcome people onto his holy hill.

  95. So there David is with this tension.

  96. He's responsible and accountable,

  97. but yet he's powerless at the same time.

  98. One commentator pointed out how in 1 Samuel 6,

  99. there's the bizarre story.

  100. It's bizarre to us

  101. because it's meant to shock us

  102. and teach us something about God.

  103. And the story is about the Ark of the Covenant,

  104. which represented the presence of God with his people.

  105. And as the Ark is being transported,

  106. the oxen that are pulling this cart stumble,

  107. the Ark gets rocky and it's about to tip,

  108. and a man named Uzzah reaches out

  109. and touches the holy Ark of God's covenant.

  110. And the Lord strikes this man dead.

  111. John McKay, professor of Old Testament at Edinburgh,

  112. he wrote,

  113. quote,

  114. a right goal does not validate the use of improper means.

  115. Wanting to help God,

  116. but doing it in a means that God has not ordained,

  117. doesn't make it okay.

  118. And his comment was that perhaps because David did not feel

  119. in personal danger in handling the Ark of God,

  120. David forgot to consult the Lord and pray

  121. over instructions on how to do this.

  122. We read in 1 Chronicles 13, 11,

  123. that David was angry.

  124. David was emotional, perplexed,

  125. frustrated, angry,

  126. because this happened.

  127. It was on his watch.

  128. He was responsible.

  129. Lord,

  130. Lord,

  131. who may abide in your tabernacle?

  132. Who may dwell on your holy hill?

  133. Who can get close to you

  134. in your covenant presence?

  135. We long to be with God,

  136. yet we know God is holy.

  137. We know that if we approach God by our own terms,

  138. he has every right to strike us dead.

  139. But it's still the longing of every heart

  140. to dwell on God's holy hill.

  141. If you're like me,

  142. you have friends at work or others

  143. who say church is my,

  144. it's in the mountains, you know.

  145. Where's your church?

  146. My church is in the mountains.

  147. I just love to go up there.

  148. That's when I feel like I'm at home.

  149. We read in Genesis that from the Garden of Eden,

  150. the rivers flowed in all four directions,

  151. and rivers flowed downhill.

  152. So the Garden of Eden is this hill

  153. or this mountain

  154. where God came to dwell

  155. and to be worshipped by his creatures.

  156. In all of the Bible,

  157. the kingdom of God is represented

  158. as a mountain, as a hill.

  159. But it was the plot of Satan

  160. to cause these mountains and hills

  161. to become a place

  162. where idolatry would happen,

  163. where people would go up to the hilltops

  164. where the trees were

  165. and try to worship the false gods there.

  166. Who may ascend the hill of the Lord?

  167. It's the longing of every heart.

  168. Ecclesiastes 3.11 says that

  169. the Lord has put eternity

  170. in the hearts of man.

  171. Every man longs to be with God,

  172. the Creator.

  173. Every heart has that longing.

  174. My second point, though,

  175. from Psalm 15 is that

  176. the standard of the Holy God is fixed.

  177. While we all have that longing,

  178. the standard of the Holy God is fixed.

  179. So what's the genre of Psalm 15?

  180. Psalm 15 is a legal psalm.

  181. The theme of this psalm

  182. is the justice of God.

  183. You may dwell,

  184. you may live,

  185. you may abide with God

  186. if you do three things.

  187. In Psalm 15,

  188. it's you must walk,

  189. you must work,

  190. and you must speak

  191. according to God's standard.

  192. Look at verse 2.

  193. You must always walk uprightly.

  194. You must work righteousness.

  195. And you must speak the truth

  196. in your heart.

  197. That's God's standard.

  198. You may only stay

  199. and abide and dwell

  200. in God's presence

  201. if you love your neighbor

  202. according to God's

  203. high moral standard.

  204. That's what Psalm 15

  205. preaches to us as law.

  206. And then he opens that up.

  207. What does that look like?

  208. In verse 3,

  209. you must never backbite

  210. with your tongue.

  211. To backbite is to

  212. stab someone in the back

  213. by using your mouth.

  214. You must never do evil

  215. to your neighbor.

  216. The Pharisees tried to twist this

  217. and get themselves out

  218. of this high standard.

  219. And the Lord Jesus gave

  220. the parable

  221. of the Good Samaritan.

  222. No one is off the hook.

  223. And you must not take up

  224. a reproach against a friend.

  225. You've heard someone say,

  226. are you picking up

  227. what I'm putting down?

  228. Well, this,

  229. to take up a reproach

  230. means that someone

  231. took your friend

  232. and reproached him.

  233. Said all these bad things

  234. about your friend

  235. or mocked him.

  236. They put that down.

  237. You went over there

  238. and you took up

  239. that reproach

  240. against your friend

  241. behind his back.

  242. See, if you have done

  243. any one of these things,

  244. you cannot dwell with God.

  245. While we're talking about

  246. how well we love our neighbor,

  247. Psalm 15 piles it on

  248. even more

  249. and the stakes

  250. get even higher.

  251. In verse 5,

  252. you may never hurt

  253. the poor

  254. with your money.

  255. Usury is an old term

  256. for doing just that.

  257. The Hebrew word

  258. is a picture

  259. of biting with your teeth.

  260. Remember how in the Psalms

  261. he says the wicked,

  262. the evil,

  263. are like wolves.

  264. They're trying to come at me

  265. and devour me

  266. with their teeth,

  267. with their mouths.

  268. When you misuse

  269. the power God's given you,

  270. you're doing just that.

  271. And you may never take a bribe

  272. against the innocent.

  273. It's not hard

  274. to become very wealthy

  275. in our country.

  276. All you have to do

  277. is have no moral standards.

  278. You could be an expert witness

  279. and lie

  280. and hurt the poor.

  281. Make a lot of money

  282. being a false witness.

  283. If that's your goal in life,

  284. if you have that much love

  285. for money,

  286. you're devouring the poor.

  287. You're taking a bribe

  288. against the innocent.

  289. See, Psalm 15 teaches us

  290. that you will only be welcome

  291. on God's holy hill

  292. if you obey him

  293. according to his high moral standard

  294. perfectly,

  295. personally,

  296. and perpetually.

  297. will you honor those

  298. who fear the Lord

  299. in verse 4?

  300. You see someone

  301. who honors

  302. and who loves the Lord

  303. and you treat them

  304. as a dear friend.

  305. This is someone,

  306. they love the Lord,

  307. they love the same God

  308. as I do.

  309. That's the friendship

  310. that I'm going to value the most.

  311. This is a true brother

  312. or sister.

  313. And that's hard enough

  314. to do well, isn't it?

  315. To love a Christian well.

  316. But on top of that,

  317. verse 4 says,

  318. you must also despise

  319. the vile person.

  320. That's something

  321. we've probably never preached

  322. very much.

  323. To be godly,

  324. you must despise

  325. the vile person.

  326. That's the standard

  327. of Psalm 15.

  328. When you think the stakes

  329. are already impossibly high,

  330. it gets even worse.

  331. Verse 4

  332. says that you must

  333. not change.

  334. If you don't do

  335. all of these things,

  336. if you say you will,

  337. then don't.

  338. You must swear

  339. to your own hurt

  340. by breaking the promise.

  341. You must make

  342. a maledictory oath

  343. against yourself.

  344. You must say

  345. that if I am not loving

  346. toward my neighbor,

  347. or if I don't honor

  348. a person who fears the Lord,

  349. may I lose my home,

  350. may I lose my job,

  351. may I lose everything

  352. that I hold dear.

  353. That's what it means

  354. to swear by my own hurt

  355. if I break my promise.

  356. So every heart

  357. has a longing

  358. to dwell with God,

  359. but the high standard

  360. of God,

  361. it's fixed,

  362. and it's not going anywhere.

  363. So we're still back

  364. to our original question

  365. at the end

  366. of Psalm 15.

  367. Who may abide

  368. in God's tabernacle?

  369. I mentioned that the theme

  370. of this psalm

  371. is God's justice.

  372. And if that's the theme,

  373. then Psalm 15

  374. must teach us

  375. something special

  376. about God

  377. in relation

  378. to His justice.

  379. Before I tell you

  380. what I think

  381. it's teaching us,

  382. I want to be very clear.

  383. All of us have probably

  384. sat under false gospels

  385. relating to the law

  386. or the justice of God.

  387. So first,

  388. what does this not mean?

  389. How should this not be preached?

  390. One way we can twist

  391. the gospel of God

  392. is to say

  393. because the standard

  394. of God is so high,

  395. He just lowers it.

  396. There really are

  397. no conditions

  398. for you to be counted

  399. as righteous.

  400. God lowers His standard.

  401. I heard this

  402. at a funeral sermon.

  403. Lene was actually

  404. there with me.

  405. It was like the first time

  406. we talked about God,

  407. I think.

  408. We had a family

  409. in the school

  410. where we were serving

  411. and we went to this funeral

  412. at a big church in town

  413. and one of the pastors

  414. was running

  415. through the service

  416. and the message

  417. we all walked away with

  418. was that if you're funny

  419. and charming

  420. and more likable

  421. than the average person,

  422. you're going to be with God.

  423. In other words,

  424. there really are

  425. no conditions,

  426. there's really no standard.

  427. That's the message.

  428. There was no ministry

  429. of the Word.

  430. There was no clear teaching

  431. about God's holy standard

  432. and what that means

  433. for sin

  434. and if there's no sin,

  435. there's no need

  436. for a Savior.

  437. So that's a wrong gospel.

  438. It's a false gospel.

  439. James Buchanan,

  440. a Scottish theologian,

  441. made it very clear.

  442. Where there is no law,

  443. there can be no transgression.

  444. The same token is that

  445. where there is no law,

  446. there can be no

  447. objective righteousness.

  448. See, to say God has no standard

  449. or there really is no moral law,

  450. it does away with both.

  451. There's no objective righteousness

  452. and there's no sin

  453. because what are you deciding

  454. that against?

  455. So to say there are no conditions

  456. or that God simply lowers

  457. His standard is a false gospel.

  458. Here's another false gospel.

  459. You are the one

  460. who fulfills those conditions.

  461. Have you heard this version

  462. of the gospel?

  463. Your final salvation,

  464. says this false gospel,

  465. it depends on your covenant keeping.

  466. Your obedience,

  467. your work,

  468. is what's going to fulfill

  469. your salvation.

  470. Have you been preached this?

  471. In other words,

  472. only those displaying

  473. relative obedience

  474. to God's moral standards

  475. will be counted righteous.

  476. You must work harder

  477. to meet the standard.

  478. The principle there is

  479. do this in order to live.

  480. That's a principle of works.

  481. That's a principle of the law.

  482. The gospel says,

  483. live and you will do this.

  484. There's a big difference.

  485. Romans 3.20 and so many other passages

  486. make this very clear.

  487. By works of the law,

  488. no one is justified

  489. in God's sight.

  490. Through the law

  491. comes the knowledge of sin.

  492. Amen?

  493. Now,

  494. as I'm trying to be

  495. really clear here,

  496. some of you are saying

  497. what you're saying

  498. is simple,

  499. common sense,

  500. that's just the gospel.

  501. I've heard nothing new.

  502. There are others of you

  503. who have raised

  504. on a few conversations

  505. and the look

  506. you're giving me right now,

  507. it's refreshing.

  508. Thank you

  509. for making the law

  510. and gospel

  511. so clear from scripture.

  512. It's not,

  513. it's not anything special.

  514. It's what God's word says.

  515. So here's what

  516. the gospel,

  517. according to Psalm 15,

  518. should be.

  519. Here's how we should

  520. interpret this.

  521. Some of our youth

  522. are going through

  523. with Jonathan

  524. our principles of hermeneutics,

  525. how to interpret the Bible.

  526. We're going to look

  527. at the context here.

  528. So the context,

  529. let's begin with the passage

  530. and then let's look

  531. at the surrounding psalms

  532. and then finally

  533. the Psalter as a whole.

  534. 150 psalms.

  535. And I'm going to keep it brief,

  536. just one or two from each.

  537. So first of all,

  538. are there any important phrases

  539. or clues from this psalm itself?

  540. Psalm 15.

  541. The first phrase

  542. is in verse 2.

  543. Look at verse 2.

  544. There's a loaded phrase.

  545. He who works righteousness.

  546. It's the one who fulfills the law

  547. to obtain the blessing.

  548. It is a principle of merit.

  549. It is a principle of law keeping

  550. that's preached in this psalm

  551. because God is just.

  552. He does not lower His standard.

  553. The question is,

  554. who is the one

  555. that can keep this law?

  556. Works righteousness.

  557. The next phrase is in verse 4.

  558. Think about if this could

  559. actually mean you and me

  560. or David.

  561. Verse 4.

  562. He will swear by His own hurt

  563. and not change.

  564. Can David keep that standard?

  565. We all know He can't.

  566. You and I,

  567. we change.

  568. And we ask God for forgiveness.

  569. In verse 5.

  570. He who does these things,

  571. here's the real clincher,

  572. shall,

  573. what's the next word in yours?

  574. Never.

  575. He who does these things

  576. shall never be moved.

  577. God's standard does not change.

  578. It's extremely high.

  579. It's impossibly high

  580. for anyone under the curse of Adam.

  581. Amen?

  582. But if you're not convinced,

  583. just from Psalm 15,

  584. let's look at the cluster of psalms.

  585. At least my view,

  586. we can talk more

  587. if you want to understand this.

  588. My view is that

  589. not only the words of the psalms,

  590. but also the arrangement

  591. of our whole Bible

  592. was under the supervision

  593. of the Holy Spirit.

  594. So most likely,

  595. Ezra,

  596. as he's putting all of the psalms

  597. that the people of Israel

  598. have collected

  599. over their entire history,

  600. as he's putting it together,

  601. he's arranging it

  602. in a way that's ordained

  603. by the Holy Spirit as well.

  604. So looking at a cluster

  605. of psalms together

  606. gives us a context

  607. for the message

  608. or the theme

  609. of that part of the book.

  610. So we won't look beyond

  611. the chapter right before Psalm 15

  612. and the chapter right after.

  613. So let's turn back

  614. to Psalm 14 first

  615. because this was our psalm last week.

  616. In Psalm 14, verse 3,

    Psalms 14:3

  617. you remember this from last week,

  618. all have turned aside.

  619. All have become corrupt.

  620. There are none who do good.

  621. No, not one.

  622. That's what we just read

  623. in Psalm 14

  624. and then we come to Psalm 15.

  625. That's what's in our mind.

  626. That's the context.

  627. He is giving the law

  628. and making it clear

  629. that none can keep the law

  630. to obtain their own righteousness.

  631. So that's the psalm right before.

  632. How about the psalm right after?

  633. Let's go to Psalm 16.

  634. In Psalm 16, verse 2 first,

    Psalms 16:2

  635. notice what David says.

  636. He says,

  637. You are my Lord.

  638. My goodness

  639. is nothing

  640. apart from you.

  641. There's one to memorize, isn't it?

  642. You are Lord.

  643. My goodness

  644. is nothing apart from you.

  645. In other words,

  646. if there is fruit,

  647. if there is goodness,

  648. good works,

  649. if there is law keeping

  650. and a growing longing

  651. to be with God,

  652. that's good.

  653. But it's nothing

  654. on David's own.

  655. It's nothing apart from God.

  656. Well, let's look at the whole Psalter

  657. and if you've been paying attention

  658. to what we've arranged

  659. as the elements

  660. for today's service,

  661. you'll know which psalm

  662. we're going to.

  663. Psalm 24.

  664. We sang this.

  665. Psalm 24, verse 3.

    Psalms 24:3

  666. The question in Psalm 24

  667. is the same

  668. as Psalm 15.

  669. Who may ascend

  670. the hill of the Lord?

  671. Who may stand

  672. in His holy place?

  673. This is a glorious psalm

  674. describing

  675. the Lord

  676. entering

  677. His kingdom.

  678. Be lifted up,

  679. gates.

  680. Lift your heads,

  681. you everlasting doors.

  682. Now look at the answer.

  683. Who is it that may ascend

  684. the hill of the Lord?

  685. Look at verse 10.

  686. The King of glory.

  687. And who is this King of glory?

  688. It's the Lord of hosts.

  689. He is the King of glory.

  690. So the answer to Psalm 15

  691. is answered by David himself.

  692. It's the Lord alone

  693. who may ascend

  694. His hill.

  695. You and I are in a dilemma

  696. that's impossible.

  697. But God has taken

  698. what's impossible

  699. that sinners could dwell

  700. with Him

  701. and He's made it possible.

  702. Let's celebrate the gospel

  703. of how He has done this.

  704. The only possible solution

  705. to sinners like us.

  706. We see the gospel

  707. in Psalm 15.

  708. You can turn there again.

  709. Psalm 15, verse 4.

    Psalms 15:4

  710. That little whisper.

  711. That little shadow

  712. of the glorious gospel.

  713. Verse 4.

  714. The Lord is the one

  715. who swore

  716. by His own hurt.

  717. Psalm 10.

  718. Yahweh has sworn

  719. and will not relent.

  720. You,

  721. speaking to God the Son

  722. as Jesus Christ,

  723. you are a priest forever.

  724. Do you see how

  725. Psalm 15, Psalm 24,

  726. the whole Bible,

  727. God does not lower

  728. His standard.

  729. But God the Son

  730. took on flesh

  731. and He alone

  732. perfectly,

  733. personally,

  734. perpetually

  735. obeyed,

  736. fulfilled God's moral law.

  737. And God decreed

  738. that our Lord Jesus Christ

  739. would become the Lamb

  740. slain for our sins.

  741. As Revelation 13 calls Him,

  742. He is the Lamb

  743. that is slain

  744. from the foundation

  745. of the world.

  746. Jesus Christ

  747. willingly obeyed

  748. His Father.

  749. Isaiah 49.8,

  750. the Father promised,

  751. I will preserve you

  752. and give you freely

  753. as a covenant

  754. to the people

  755. to restore the earth.

  756. Praise God

  757. that verse 4 says,

  758. our Lord,

  759. He swore by His own hurt

  760. and He is the only one

  761. who does not change.

  762. In Isaiah 50.7,

  763. we get the words

  764. from the perspective

  765. of the Son.

  766. The Lord God

  767. will help me.

  768. I will not be disgraced.

  769. Therefore,

  770. I have set my face

  771. like a flint

  772. and I know

  773. that I will not

  774. be ashamed.

  775. Our Lord did not

  776. change on His mission

  777. marching to the cross

  778. of Calvary.

  779. Psalm 15.5 says,

  780. He who does these things.

  781. And in Hebrews 5.8,

  782. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  783. He learned obedience

  784. and He fulfilled the law

  785. and He shall never be moved.

  786. Psalm 2.6 says,

  787. I have now set my King

  788. upon my holy hill of Zion.

  789. The Father has taken Christ

  790. with His finished work

  791. and put Him forever,

  792. unmovable,

  793. on the holy hill of heaven,

  794. ruling over His people.

  795. Psalm 110.1,

  796. Yahweh said to my Lord,

  797. sit at my right hand

  798. till I make your enemies

  799. your footstool.

  800. Our Lord Jesus Christ

  801. has done it.

  802. He has ascended

  803. the holy hill of the Lord

  804. and He shall not

  805. be moved ever.

  806. Praise the Lord.

  807. Well, how does the holy God

  808. bring you and me

  809. to dwell with Him?

  810. How does the holy God

  811. bring you and me

  812. to dwell with Him?

  813. David's longing in verse 1

  814. was to dwell

  815. in the tabernacle of God.

  816. In John 1,

  817. we read

  818. that our Lord Jesus Christ,

  819. the very word of God,

  820. God Himself,

  821. the creator of all,

  822. has tabernacled

  823. among us.

  824. The Lord Jesus Christ

  825. became God's tabernacle.

  826. He became the meeting point

  827. between the holy God

  828. and saved sinners like us.

  829. As the ruler of God's people,

  830. like David,

  831. our Lord Jesus Christ,

  832. He is concerned

  833. for the well-being

  834. spiritually of His people.

  835. Better than David,

  836. however,

  837. our Lord Jesus Christ,

  838. He does rule over you

  839. supremely.

  840. He's not only the king,

  841. He's also the priest

  842. and the prophet.

  843. He does have authority

  844. over His people.

  845. He conducts our worship.

  846. God has made Him

  847. a better priest

  848. from a better order

  849. that cannot be shaken.

  850. Our Lord Jesus Christ

  851. secured this ministry

  852. because He submitted Himself

  853. to God's own law

  854. and He achieved it

  855. for you and for me.

  856. That high stake of verse 2,

  857. to walk,

  858. to work,

  859. and to speak,

  860. our Lord Jesus Christ

  861. fulfilled

  862. because we can't.

  863. He fulfilled it for us.

  864. Jesus always walked uprightly.

  865. He always worked righteousness.

  866. And He always spoke

  867. the truth in His heart.

  868. And this is good news

  869. because Jesus turned around

  870. and He preached in John 8.

  871. Truly, truly,

  872. everyone who practices sin

  873. is a slave to sin.

  874. God's standard does not get lower.

  875. And the slave does not remain

  876. in the house forever.

  877. But the good news is

  878. that Jesus Christ,

  879. the Son of God,

  880. He remains forever.

  881. And He's the one

  882. who became the tabernacle

  883. and brings you in

  884. and He says,

  885. in me,

  886. you are free.

  887. You are not a slave

  888. to your sins.

  889. Our Lord Jesus Christ,

  890. He removed

  891. every barrier

  892. that could impede us

  893. from approaching God.

  894. And our Lord Jesus Christ,

  895. He sends His Holy Spirit

  896. to dwell inside of us.

  897. And He supplies us

  898. as a nation of priests

  899. so we have all the resources

  900. we need to serve Him

  901. in the ways that He's ordained.

  902. So who is it

  903. that can abide

  904. in God's tabernacle?

  905. It's all those

  906. whom Christ's perfect life

  907. and precious blood

  908. freely cover.

  909. Amen.

  910. Amen.

  911. Romans 4, 7,

  912. And blessed are those

  913. whose lawless deeds

  914. are forgiven

  915. and whose sins

  916. are covered.

  917. Romans 4, 24,

  918. Jesus our Lord

  919. was delivered up

  920. for our trespasses

  921. and He was raised

  922. for our justification.

  923. It's all the work

  924. He has done

  925. that justifies you.

  926. The Lord of hosts,

  927. He is the King of glory.

  928. It's the righteousness

  929. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  930. that God freely counts

  931. to you and to me

  932. who believe in Him.

  933. And when God gives you

  934. a new heart,

  935. you do long,

  936. like David,

  937. to be in God's house.

  938. Don't you?

  939. How do you know

  940. if you've been washed clean?

  941. You're at home

  942. with God's people.

  943. You long to dwell

  944. with Him more and more

  945. and to not go away.

  946. Let's stay with God.

  947. Well, this is not

  948. the end of it.

  949. This is our justification,

  950. but there's even more glory,

  951. more promises

  952. that God pours out

  953. through Christ.

  954. The final question

  955. I want to open up

  956. for us is this.

  957. What happens to you

  958. and to me

  959. as we abide with God

  960. through Christ?

  961. As we abide

  962. with God through Christ,

  963. something happens to us.

  964. it struck me

  965. that the tabernacle

  966. is a tent.

  967. It's not a walled city.

  968. It's not a shining,

  969. expensive palace.

  970. But it's a tabernacle

  971. and it's enough shelter

  972. to protect us

  973. from rain and heat

  974. and from the storms of life.

  975. You long to be

  976. in the tabernacle

  977. in this life,

  978. don't you?

  979. David was a shadow

  980. of Christ

  981. in His first coming.

  982. My understanding

  983. is that Solomon

  984. is a picture for us

  985. of Christ

  986. in His second coming.

  987. There is a glorious

  988. kingdom of heaven,

  989. not just a tent,

  990. but it's an entire city now

  991. that will descend

  992. and there will be

  993. a new heavens,

  994. a new earth

  995. and Christ will reign

  996. like Solomon did

  997. over all of the land,

  998. over all the world.

  999. And when Christ returns,

1000. we will be with the Lord

  1001. forever,

1002. not just in a tabernacle,

  1003. in His house.

  1004. Jesus was so eager

  1005. to tell His disciples

  1006. about His Father's house

1007. and He's not left us

  1008. as orphans.

  1009. By His Holy Spirit,

1010. we are drawn to Him.

  1011. We abide with Him

  1012. through faith now

  1013. in this little tabernacle

  1014. on this earth.

  1015. and as we commune

  1016. with Him,

1017. we are being made holy.

  1018. Sinclair Ferguson said,

  1019. to be holy

  1020. or to be sanctified

  1021. is to become

  1022. like those with whom

  1023. you are communing.

  1024. Isn't that true?

1025. You become like the people

1026. you spend a lot of time with.

  1027. That's another reason

  1028. we should stick together,

  1029. stay with God's people,

  1030. stay with the church.

  1031. Ferguson wrote,

  1032. sanctification is simply

  1033. the outworking of communion.

1034. Do you see the difference

  1035. in tone?

1036. It's not do this and live.

  1037. It's live with God,

  1038. abide with Him.

  1039. And you'll have

  1040. His eternal life.

  1041. Sanctification means

  1042. you are becoming

  1043. like Christ

  1044. by His power.

  1045. Buchanan once again commented,

  1046. your increasing obedience

  1047. to God's moral law

  1048. by the Holy Spirit's

  1049. power

  1050. is a good thing.

  1051. In other words,

  1052. Christians should be

  1053. checking themselves.

  1054. We should not be

1055. taking bribes against the poor

  1056. or backstabbing our neighbor

1057. or taking up a rebuke

  1058. against a friend.

  1059. We should become

1060. more and more like Christ.

  1061. But it's

1062. the effect of your faith,

  1063. not the cause.

1064. It's the fruit of faith,

  1065. not the root.

1066. It's the evidence of faith,

1067. not the condition for faith.

  1068. He wrote,

  1069. as such,

  1070. your sanctification

  1071. cannot form

1072. any part of the ground

  1073. on which your justification

  1074. depends.

  1075. But according to

  1076. 1 Corinthians 6.17,

1077. we have this glorious promise.

  1078. Ken and the brothers

  1079. on Wednesday morning

1080. helped me to see this one.

1081. Jonathan brought this verse to us.

  1082. 1 Corinthians 6.17,

  1083. we read this earlier

  1084. in our service.

  1085. You who are joined

  1086. to the Lord,

  1087. you are one spirit

  1088. with Christ.

  1089. Verse 19,

  1090. your body

  1091. is the temple

  1092. of the Holy Spirit

  1093. who is in you.

  1094. From you,

  1095. I'm sorry,

1096. whom you have from God

1097. and so you are not your own.

  1098. For you were bought

  1099. at a price.

  1100. Therefore glorify God

  1101. in your body

  1102. and in your spirit

  1103. which are God's.

  1104. Do you remember

  1105. how David

  1106. was troubled

1107. that this Ark of the Covenant

  1108. is so sacred

1109. no one could touch it

  1110. or approach it?

1111. God has made that lesson

  1112. very clear.

  1113. Moses,

  1114. do you remember

  1115. how the priest

  1116. couldn't even enter

  1117. the tabernacle

  1118. because the glory

  1119. of the Lord

  1120. so filled the tabernacle?

  1121. And at the dedication

  1122. of the temple

  1123. under Solomon,

  1124. do you remember

  1125. the same thing happened?

  1126. The priest could not

  1127. even go inside

  1128. because of the weight

  1129. of God's glory.

  1130. So when God's glory

  1131. fills the dwelling place,

  1132. everything else

  1133. is pushed out.

  1134. What a glorious picture

1135. of what the Spirit does

  1136. in our sanctification.

1137. Because you belong to Him,

  1138. our catechism says,

  1139. Christ,

  1140. by His Holy Spirit,

  1141. He assures you

  1142. of eternal life

  1143. and He makes you

  1144. wholeheartedly willing

  1145. and ready

  1146. from now on

  1147. to live

  1148. for Him

  1149. increasingly,

  1150. progressively,

  1151. more and more.

  1152. Last week we sung

  1153. this powerful song,

  1154. does the Father

  1155. truly love us?

  1156. He does.

  1157. Does the Spirit

  1158. move among us?

  1159. He does.

  1160. And does Jesus,

  1161. our Messiah,

  1162. hold forever

  1163. those He loves?

  1164. He does.

  1165. Does our God

  1166. intend to dwell

  1167. again with us?

  1168. He does.

  1169. So long to be

  1170. in God's holy presence.

  1171. Long to abide

  1172. with God

  1173. through Jesus Christ,

  1174. God's tabernacle

  1175. in this life.

  1176. And know that

  1177. He promises

  1178. that as you

  1179. abide in Christ,

  1180. He holds you forever.

  1181. You shall never

  1182. be moved.

  1183. Dwell with Him.

  1184. T'was grace

  1185. that brought you

  1186. safe thus far

  1187. and grace

  1188. will lead you home.

  1189. Amen.

  1190. Let's pray.

  1191. Lord, we praise You

  1192. for Your grace

  1193. from start to finish

  1194. so that no man

  1195. may boast.

  1196. Thank You

  1197. for Your powerful

  1198. Holy Spirit

1199. who gives a new heart,

  1200. who draws us

  1201. to Yourself

  1202. and who keeps us

  1203. with You.

  1204. As we commune

  1205. with You,

  1206. You make us

  1207. more like Your Son.

1208. All glory be to God.

  1209. We ask that You
